Norma Jean are an American metalcore band, hailing from the Atlanta suburb of Douglasville, Georgia. They formed the band in 1997.

Taking their moniker - with tongue, you have to suspect, firmly in cheek - from the real name of Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe, Norma Jean have positioned themselves, over the course of nearly two decades and six albums to date, as one of the most influential and important bands currently playing metalcore. Admittedly, it hasn’t come without some internal turbulence, certainly in terms of their lineup, for which they appear to have operated something of an revolving door policy; lead guitarist Chris John Day is now their only remaining original member, with the rest of the current group completed by frontman Cory Brandan Putman, guitarist Jeff Hickey, bass played John Finnegan and Clayton ‘Goose’ Holyoak on drums.

They’ve even flirted with mainstream recognition over the years, having been nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Recording Package for sophomore LP ‘O God, the Aftermath’ in 2005, but for the most part, their biggest achievement has been carving out a revered status within the metal community as a whole. having toured as part of Ozzfest and the Warped Tour. They’ve supported the likes of Architects and The Dillinger Escape Plan, too, and were handpicked by Rob Zombie to play the side stage at his Mayhem Festival back in 2010.

Norma Jean has been honing their metalcore craft for the last twenty years almost. They have dominated the Christian charts with three number one albums and two number two albums. They take to the stage this evening with a great presence as though they know exactly what they are doing, and they of course do when they launch into “Robots 3 Humans 0”. The horde of an audience is soaking in their distinctive metalcore music, taking it all in. “Bastardizer” I s a huge song for the audience, setting of mosh pits left right and centre. The guitars leading the songs and the drums driving them in true metalcore fashion.

For a metalcore band, their albums have made it pretty high up in the charts with their highest Billboard 200 chart position being “The Anti Mother” peaking at 29. Not only this, but they have received a Grammy Award nomination in 2006 for “Best Recording Package” for their second album “O God, the Aftermath”.

I was really looking forward to Norma Jean after being a fan for years and never seeing them live. They certainly brought their vibe to the live show, but I was disappointed to hear only one song from their new album - and probably three from their last three. I don’t know if that’s how all their shows are, but I vote for more of the new stuff!

He is Legend is an amazing band. the pits were wild but everything there had my back (even tho im a 5" 1 girl) i felt out of this world listening to the music and feeling the bass in my chest.

i loved the experience and i hope to see them live again.

Norma Jean puts on one hell of a show! They are such down to earth guys and they truly enjoy making music and performing! They are humble and grateful and you just don't see that anymore. And they are even better off the stage! Such awesome guys to hang out anytime!

This band freakin' rocks. Best show I've seen in a long time. Very high energy, I couldn't stop moving cause they emitted so much to the crowd. Guys were available after the show for pics and were very chill.

Norma Jean, Emery, Aaron Gillespie + More Plot ‘Labeled Fest’ 2022 Tour

The Labeled podcast that chronicles Christian indie and punk bastion Tooth & Nail Records becomes a concert tour this summer , led by headliners from the scene such as  Norma Jean , Emery and Underoath 's Aaron Gillespie  performing one of his solo band's albums.

The three artists anchor most dates on the just-announced "Labeled Fest" across the United States.

Additional artists on the tour include Oh, Sleeper , Watashi Wa, Salt Creek and Idle Threat.

Members of the post-hardcore combo Emery created and co-host Labeled . Norma Jean, pictured above, are the metalcore stalwarts who started life as Luti-Kriss . Gillespie last year released  Voyeurist with the screamo paragons Underoath; he'll play 2007's Southern Weather , the debut from his solo project The Almost , at Labeled Fest dates this summer.

Tooth & Nail was an early force for underground music in religious entertainment and beyond beginning in the 1990s. Its metal imprint, Solid State, influenced heavy music with signees such as Norma Jean, Oh Sleeper, Demon Hunter, Silent Planet, Zao, Fit for a King, The Devil Wears Prada and many others.

P.O.D. Announce 2024 Tour Dates with Bad Wolves, Norman Jean

The band’s forthcoming LP ‘Veritas’ arrives in May

This spring, P.O.D. are returning to the road. The group announced Tuesday routing for their I Got That Tour. The trek includes very special guests Bad Wolves, Norma Jean, and Blind Channel.

An artist ticket pre-sale begins tomorrow, Wednesday, February 28 at 10am. General tickets go on sale this Friday, March 1 at 10am. Special VIP Packages are available now.

Platinum-selling rock mainstays P.O.D. have confirmed their forthcoming album, Veritas . The record is slated for arrival May 3 through Mascot Records. It is the band’s 11th studio outing, following 2018’s Circles .

In the fall of 2022, the band debuted the video for “Drop,” which features a vicious vocal cameo from Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe. They followed with the video for equally eruptive single “Afraid to Die,” featuring Jinjer vocalist Tatiana Shmayluk. The tracks combined have garnered seven million streams.

“‘Afraid to Die’ is a combination of cryptic and triumphant melodies,” says P.O.D. guitarist Marcos Curiel. “It has storytelling rhymes and chugged verses, and a wide open, melodic yet semi-morbid, chorus. It’s anthemic In every sense of the word.”He continues, “Our dear friend Tatiana Shmayluk offers her unique approach and we had incredible musical chemistry with her. This is P.O.D. hitting the human core of our existence and dealing with love, fear, integrity, and most of all, family and friends. It’s ultimately an abundance of love and life.”

“This will most likely be one of my favorite P.O.D. records,” bassist Traa Daniels states. “There are some songs on this record that are so different from one another, but still have that P.O.D. So Cal flavor.”

Written over the course of several years, with the band typically writing a tune or two at a time in L.A. with The Heavy, Veritas is a cannon-shot of adrenaline to the ear drums. And for a band that has never shied away from wearing their heart on their sleeve, it’s also one of the most emotionally inspired albums of the band’s career.

The word VERITAS — which translates to “Truth” in Latin — defined the emotional core of the album, and the album art further encapsulates that message: to Curiel, the Veritas album cover, which pictures a child with its eyes blacked out, signifies “a culmination of innocence and dark hidden truths.

P.O.D. have a select few headlining shows plotted in the UK this year, featured appearances at Welcome to Rockville (U.S.) and Sonic Temple (U.S.), in addition to their spring U.S. tour dates.

P.O.D. Announce 2024 Tour with Bad Wolves and Norma Jean

P.O.D. have a new album on the way, and they’re touring the U.S. to promote the new tunes. The band has announced a spring 2024 US tour with openers Bad Wolves, Norma Jean and Blind Channel.

The tour, called the “I Got That Tour,” will set off April 26 in Phoenix, Arizona, and runs through a May 31 date in San Antonio, Texas. In addition to the headlining shows, P.O.D. will appear at a handful of music festivals, including a May 12 date at Welcome to Rockville in Daytona Beach, Florida; a May 16 appearance at Sonic Temple in Columbus, Ohio; and June 2 date at So What! Fest in Dallas, Texas.

A Live Nation ticket pre-sale for certain dates starts Thursday (Feb. 29) at 10 a.m. local time using the code ENERGY. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday (March 1) at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster.

“With all of the love and amazing energy surrounding our new album Veritas, we couldn’t be more excited about hitting the road again and seeing your beautiful faces,” frontman Sonny Sandoval said in a press release. “This album is so special to us and we can’t wait to play these new powerful songs and sing out loud with you until the whole world recognizes we’re all in this together!”

P.O.D.’s new album, “Veritas,” arrives on May 3. The album is very unique for P.O.D., in that it features a bevy of guest appearances from artists such as Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe on “Drop” and Tatiana Shmayluk of Jinjer on “Afraid to Die.”

Moreover, regarding the new album, guitarist Marcus Curiel said in a statement, “We can’t wait for you all to hear the new album in its entirety. We’ve put so much heart and soul into this recording. We are extremely proud of it. We hope to see all your beautiful faces in city near you. Thank you for your unwavering support. We love and appreciate you all.”

Walk the historical old center of Moscow with its cool local vibe, including the main Tverskaya street , and indulge in desserts in the first grocery “Eliseev's store” , housed in an 18th century neoclassical building, famous for its baroque interior and decoration.

At 3:30, as energy flagged, lunch was on the agenda at a Ukrainian restaurant.  Just in time!  We asked our guide to order for us.  We all had the same thing....borscht (the Ukrainian version has beans and more tomatoes than the Russian version, which has more beets and includes beef). 

The special high bread served is called galushki.  Our main course was golubtsy...a dish of minced meat rolled in braised cabbage leaves.  Both dishes called for optional sour cream as a topping....of course, yes, please....I recommend it. 

Full, satisfied, and completely refreshed, it was off to Red Square and St. Basil's and GUM department store.  Red Square is not so named because of the color of the brick walls of the Kremlin.  Rather the word for 'red' and the word for 'beautiful' are similar in pronunciation....and, there you have it. 

As we made the turn by the National Museum in front of which is the mounted sculpture of the "Marshall of Victory," Giorgy Zhukov from WWII and caught our first view of St. Basil's, my friend and I simultaneously emitted "Oooohhhhh!"  There it was....the iconic onion domes of St. Basil's!  Hooray....it was open until 7....we had about 30 minutes and were allowed in, AND we could take photos with no flash. 

Now, I can give you a taste of what we saw in the other cathedrals in Cathedral Square.  What we learned is that St. Vasily and St. Basil are one in the same....Russian/English.  He was a common man who wandered Moscow unclothed and barefoot.  But, all, even Ivan the Terrible, heeded his opinions derived from his visions.  Ivan had this cathedral built over his tomb. 

As we exited and took photos up close of the onion domes, Inna presented us with chocolate (how did she know we were ready for another energy boost, and we each got a big piece of chocolate.  The baby's name pictured on the wrapper of this famous Russian chocolate is Alyonka....the Russian Gerber baby, don't you think? 

One could wear out the credit card in GUM's (capitalized because it is actually a government abbreviation), but the 'kitty' and my credit card stayed in my pocket as we strolled through the glass-topped arcade. 

We then strolled through some of Moscow's lovely pedestrian streets; paused to listen as a wonderful quartet performed Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" in an underground passage to cross the busy street (hooray!....we DID have our 'classical concert' experience after all; a request Alina tried in vain to fill because none was scheduled those days), saw the Bolshoi, which means 'big' (my friend has yet to recover that their performance schedule did not coincide with our cruise), saw the Central Telegraph Building, dating from the 1930's, and made our way to the Ritz-Carlton to see the night view of Moscow from the rooftop bar, called O2. 

There were fleece blankets to wrap yourself in....yes, it got that cold when the sun set.  We each ordered something hot to drink...the ginger, mint, lemon tea served to me in a parfait glass (for 600 rubles...about $9....you pay for the view here!) was delightful and hit the spot perfectly.  It was time to call it a night....

Your 48-hour tour guide of Moscow this winter!

9 am – Visit the Red Square

The first thing that every tourist should do by default is visit the very heart of Moscow – it’s main and most beautiful (which ‘krasnaya’ actually meant in Old Russian) square! 

There are several ways to explore it:

• Take a selfie with Spasskaya Tower
• Have a warm drink at the Christmas market (which lasts until mid-January)
• Visit Lenin’s Mausoleum
• Shop in the gorgeous adjacent GUM department store
• Visit St. Basil’s Cathedral (and learn that it’s actually several churches under one roof).           

11 am – It’s Kremlin time!

Entering the Kremlin is, actually, a bit of a quest, as it’s a presidential facility with no general access. You need to buy a ticket or, better still, book a guided tour. Inside the Kremlin’s walls, you will find ancient cathedrals, in which Russian tsars used to be crowned and buried, as well as explore the magnificent architecture of the Kremlin that reflects the rich history of the country. And, finally, you could also make a quick visit to the Moscow Kremlin Museums and admire artifacts from various Russian tsarist eras: carriages, thrones, crowns and the most incredible armory and jewelry.

2 pm – Watch the changing of the Guard

A very spectacular (and free) thing to do is watch how the honor guard does their ceremonial change at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Eternal Flame, situated in Alexander Garden, right next to the Kremlin wall. Every hour, from 8 am to 8 pm, the 1st Company of the Kremlin (Presidential) Regiment performs this rather old and beautiful tradition. But, be warned, it's often overcrowded. 

3 pm – Enjoy a green oasis just in the center

Just a few steps from the Red Square, you will find the fabulous Zaryadye park. Opened in 2017, it is designed by renowned American architect bureau ‘Diller Scofidio + Renfro’. You can walk among the very cozy botanical decorations and explore Russia’s climate zones, as each of them is represented in dedicated areas, complete with flora from those zones.

The park also has an underground museum, an “ice cave” and a 3D cinema, where you can take part in a virtual adventure – a flight over Moscow! However, the piece de resistance is a floating boomerang bridge over the Moskva River, one of the best places to take a selfie.

You can also grab a quick lunch or relax with a cup of coffee or tea in the park.

7 pm – Arrange a ballet night

Of course, the most fancy way to finish your day in Moscow would be to go to the ballet at the Bolshoi Theater (in a perfect world, to see ‘The Nutcracker’!). However, getting tickets to the Bolshoi is not an easy task and should be done well in advance of your visit. 

But, don’t be upset if you don’t manage to get tickets to the Bolshoi. Moscow has dozens of other options to see a ballet (or opera). No less brilliant performances can be seen in the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theater or in The State Kremlin Palace (by the way, this is another way to get a quick glimpse inside the Kremlin!).

10:30 pm – Have a late dinner in a fancy restaurant

There are not so many other cities with such a big choice of restaurants in a range of tastes and styles. In 2021, the authoritative Michelin guide announced their pick of the best of Moscow’s restaurants. And here’s our guide to all the places with Russian cuisine for any budget. But, if you happen to be in the area of the Bolshoi or Nemirovich-Danchenko Theater, then ‘Dr. Zhivago’ would definitely be a nice option (and it’s open around the clock).

DAY 2 

9 am – grab a moscow coffee.

Moscow is definitely a coffee city! You can find coffee shops on every corner and they all offer a huge range of drinks. Try a ‘raf’ coffee, a sweet, creamy drink that was created in Russia, or dare to pick one of the very unusual offers, like cheese coffee or a Soviet candy style one (check out our coffee guide here ).

10 am – Take a river cruise

Another exciting way to explore Moscow is to observe it from the water. Boats cruise along the Moskva River all year round. Most begin their route from the Hotel Ukraine, one of Stalin's ‘Seven Sister’ skyscrapers, and will bring you back to the same spot after passing the medieval Novodevichy Convent, Moscow State University and Luzhniki Stadium, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and giant monument to Peter the Great and many other sightseeings. 

It’s always at optimum temperature inside the boat, which also has huge panoramic windows. Select boats also offer a full dining experience, so it is also a nice place to have breakfast or lunch.

1 pm – Visit ‘Russia’ Expo and taste a bunch of Russian regional cuisines

Until April 2024, the Soviet-era VDNKh exhibition park is hosting the huge ‘Russia’ expo, with tons of activities and expositions devoted to Russia, its culture, science and nature. Check out our special guide on what to do there!  

An entire ‘House of Russian Cuisine’ has been opened at the expo. You will find 15 food stands with flagship dishes from Kamchatka, Siberia, Karelia and other regions of Russia. Imagine trying a range of cuisines and dishes in one place without even having to travel anywhere, be it Altai pelmeni, Tula kalach or Caucasian pies! A perfect place to grab some lunch.

The VDNKh exhibition park is a great place to visit, in general! Its pavilions are the perfect example of Stalinit Empire style architecture and you can almost feel as if you’ve traveled back in time! You will also find several interesting museums in the park – devoted to space exploration, Russian history and even a ‘Special Purpose Garage’, which showcases the various vehicles used by the country’s leaders.

And, finally, you can ride Europe's tallest panoramic wheel – ‘Sun of Moscow’ – that will give you panoramic views of the city – from a height of 140 meters!

5 pm – Ice skate with view & mulled wine

Ice skating is one of the most popular and affordable activities in Moscow. There are several great ice skating rinks in picturesque locations that are open all winter long. One of the biggest rinks in Europe is also at the aforementioned VDNKh or you can visit the one in Gorky Park, another very popular Moscow spot, or the small, but fancy rink – right on Red Square! 

All the parks offer ice skate rental, so the only things you need are warm clothes, a charged phone to record your memories and a good mood!  Moscow also gets dark at 4:30 pm in winter and hundreds of lights are switched on, turning the city into a giant fairy tale!

And, if you are not a sports person, we’ve picked several other unusual activities that you could do in Moscow instead. For example, did you know that there is an entire district of dacha (countryside) houses, just 10 minutes from the center, surrounded by giant new highrises? How about taking a stroll there and feeling the early Soviet atmosphere?

8 pm – Warm up & laugh out loud

After all these outdoor activities, what could be better than a warm cozy bar with a hot drink and nice company? Moscow is a city full of entertainment for all tastes. So, if you know the Russian language or want to practice it, go to a theater or catch a stand-up comedy show. Moscow even has comedy shows in English, where you can hear both Russians speaking fluent English or foreigners (including Brits and Americans) who live in Russia speaking in broken or heavily-accented Russian (Check their show dates on the ‘ Moscow English Comedy ’ Telegram channel)!

11 pm – Finish by partying the night away!

Moscow never sleeps, as you might have heard. Which means there are plenty of bars and nightclubs where you can have a drink (or two or three; be sure to check out how Russians make Black Russian and White Russian cocktails) and chat with incredibly different people. Have fun and don’t miss your flight (or miss it and stay longer in the best city in the world!)!
