Where is Hurghada?

Located on the Red Sea Coast, the Egyptian holiday resort of Hurghada stretches 22 miles along the golden sand shoreline of the warm waters of the Red Sea.

Hurghada resort is separated into 3 sections:

History of Hurghada

Until as late as the 80's, Hurghada was just a small fishing village, however heavy international investment coupled with the locations natural beauty has led to Hurghada quickly becoming Egypt's most popular beach holiday destination for UK holiday makers as-well as international holidaymakers looking for a chilled-our atmosphere and beautiful beaches.

Not much is known about Hurghada itself before it's development for tourism, it was a fairly unremarkable village known by locals for it's pretty location and small fishing industry.

Better known in the area is the port of El Quseir, about 80km south of Hurghada and a large and well-known port, used for centuries to import coffee from the Republic of Yemen.

in 1493 BC explorers were sent by Queen Hatshepsut, who's temple can be seen today on our Luxor Tours , to the legendary land of Punt in the Horn of Africa - now known as Somalia. The Ancient Egyptian explorers travelled to Punt down the life-blood of Egypt- the River Nile and then through Wadi Tumilat in the Eastern Delta and then on to the Red Sea. Evidence suggests the Egyptians would disassemble their boats, carry them overland and then use them to trade with in the Red Sea.

This successful expedition from Egypt to Punt bought back precious treasures such as Gold, ebony, wild animals and skins, ivory, spices and much more.

The port of Al Quasayr has played a significant part in the local area of Hurghada's history, and Egypt's history as a whole.

In much more recent history, Hurghada was founded as a holiday resort aimed specifically at the water sports market. With it's famously clear Red-Sea waters filled with beautiful coral reefs and wildly-varied marine life from colourful fish to turtles and dolphins, Hurghada offers fantastic scuba diving and snorkeling trips .

The trip to Egypt was amazing. Regarding the organisation the company really took care of us and organised every step from beginning till the end. You really have the feeling to be in good hands. Concerning the several spots of the trip we saw a lot of Egypt in a short time. It was a rough schedule but it was worth it. We saw many things, from pyramids to many impressive temples. The highlights were the Nile Cruise and the hot air balloon in Luxor. Next to all these experiences, Anas and Taher did a great job. Anas made the whole trip with his huge knowledge about the ancient Egyptian era very interesting. Not only his knowledge, also his funny and humorous way to explain and show us things made the trip special. There is only one thing that should be communicated better, because depending where you come from, the tipping for us was unusual and should be explained at the beginning.

Egypt Nile Adventure

The route was well planned and if we had tried to plan it ourselves without a tour guide, we wouldn't have been able to do half of it. The tour guide, George Tamer, was very helpful and friendly throughout the whole tour, giving loads of information regarding the highlights of the Egyptian sites and history. We were lucky that we got into a small group of 5 people and therefore we were able to move around using a smaller bus.

Luxor Highlights From Hurghada Day Tour

What people love about hurghada tours.

8 days Egypt tour First of all, the tour provides with many of the hotspots to visit in Egypt, and it is well designed, although a little bit condensed in some parts of the country. It offers what it says, and we have a very good response from Holidays in Egypt during our trip when needed to contact them. The tour relies a lot in the guiding and expertise of the tour guide allocated, and that is when things turned tricky for us. Tour Guide Ahmed Magdy: Ahmed showed smiley and friendly, we shared some good moments and lots of moments during our trip when walking with a local person eases a lot your stay in the country, like transfers and location of places; he displayed an incredible knowledge of the sites visited, especially on dates and calendars on the history of Egypt. On the wrong side, he was always rushing to finish the job as early as possible during the day. On the first day, we visited the Pyramids of Giza, he managed to make us forget about the visit inside the Pyramids, then he stopped at the Sphynx for literally 2 min, enough to take pictures from the outside of the precinct, before we realized we are out before 11:30, we did not have time to enjoy the views of the Sphynx, the closer we were is like 30 mtrs away, a shame that we will carry; instead, he took us to Papyrus shop (we did not want and did not ask), after that we headed back to Cairo to see the Museum, we forgot at the time that lunch at the Pyramids was included, Ahmed took us on a quick visit to the museum and then to have lunch in a local takeaway before 2pm (later in the tour I asked him about the missing lunch at the Pyramids and he said that the agency did not send him the code for that...), we missed inside of Pyramids, lunch, Sphynx, and we were left on our own until 7pm; to much rush to finish.. And unfortunately that was his procedure all over the trip, he rushes tremendously on all sites, his explanations are detailed on dates of Egyptian empire useless for tourists and always seeking for the next cut to save some time on visits; but he manages to take you to shops where he can get his share (Papyrus shop, camel ride, oil shop, stone base shop, day trip to, visit to Abu Simbel he asked us for 125 euros per person which we did not do it), unwanted embarrassing visits if you don't have the intention of buying anything. Overall, the tour offers a good cover of Egypt for a first visit, accommodations were very good, the cruise on the River Nile excellent, and the customer service with Holidays in Egypt very good, good communication; it could have been memorable with a more dedicated tour guide.

Our guide, Mina, was very knowledgable and helpful when you wanted to find specific things. The accommodations were great, the river cruise was fantastic. Do the trip to Abu Simbal and the Nubian village dinner, it's 100% worth it. It would have been nice to do a tour in Hurghada of the Museum (which is worth the 20 minute walk), the mosque and the church.

• Know what to wear. If you are visiting Hurghada City, dress modestly. Yes, you can wear shorts, sundresses and bikini on a beach in Egypt, but for a visit to a city pack something more modest such as a long-sleeve dress that covers your knees, or lightweight pants, a loose T-shirt and a cardigan. On Egypt 's popular Red Sea coast – famed for long stretches of beautiful shoreline and vibrant corals – the city of Hurghada has grown from a quiet fishing village into the capital of a region beloved by tourists. While often visitors will ensconce themselves into the comfort of the many resorts , venturing outside reveals plenty of activities to pack a holiday with.

Visitors can immerse themselves in 'old Hurghada' in the souks and restaurants of the old town, or opt for something more modern with a stint of people watching around the swish marina. It's from the latter that you can head out onto the water – there are a string of boat operators who will take you out for the day, including trips to the wonderful Giftun Islands – as well as book diving trips (there are a couple of impressive ship wrecks to explore).

Hurghada also makes a convenient base should you wish to get out and discover more of Egypt . Bedouin villages and rolling dunes await in the desert, or make a journey back in time to see some of the country's most fascinating historical sites with a day trip to Luxor .

Here's how to ensure your Hurghada holiday on the Red Sea is a memorable one.

Explore the old town

Hurghada’s old town, known as El Dahar, used to be the centre of the city during its past as a fishing village. Nowadays, it is the most ‘authentically Egyptian’ part of Hurghada, with souks, local restaurants and plenty of cheaper hotel options. This is away from the beaten tourist path, but it’s a bustling part of the city, the highlights of which are the El Mina Mosque and the Church of St. Shenouda.

Visit the marina

The city’s pedestrianised marina is one of the most pleasant places to go for a relaxed stroll, evening meal or some drinks (and it’s also the hub of Hurghada’s nightlife). Plenty of hotels, restaurants and bars line the promenade, many housed in pastel pink and ochre buildings, with Hurghada Marina Boulevard acting as the focal point for events.

Hit the beach

Hurghada is mostly known as a coastal resort destination, so it makes sense to spend plenty of time on its beaches. The city is home to miles of golden coastline and warm, turquoise waters, including those of El Dahar, Makadi Bay, Old Vic and Merritt Beach, as well as dozens of private hotel beaches. Down the coast, the resort of Soma Bay is a haven for water sports enthusiasts.

Go diving or snorkelling

Water sports and snorkelling are accessible on many of Hurghada’s beaches, but you might want to go one step further and take an excursion to one of the city’s excellent diving and snorkelling sites. The Red Sea’s various wrecks and coral reefs – replete with tropical fish – make for great diving spots, particularly around El Gouna, Sahl Hasheesh and Makadi Bay. Hurghada’s two main wrecks are the SS Thistlegorm and the Rosalie Moller, two WW2-era vessels.

Venture out into the desert

The desert around Hurghada is known as the Eastern Desert, and is home to miles of rolling dunes, rocky outcrops and even Bedouin villages. Visitors can go on dune buggy tours, jeep safaris and camel rides, finishing up with a visit to a traditional village – or why not stay the night and experience eating and camping under the stars?

Sail out to the Giftun Islands

If you’d like to combine excellent dive sites with even more beaches – this time with white sands – take a day trip to the Giftun Islands. They are surrounded by a coral reef conservation area, so are ideal for snorkelling, and you may even spot dolphins at Dolphin House Island. There’s plenty of pristine shoreline along the islands, as well as tourist infrastructure in places like Orange Bay.

Take a day trip to ancient Egypt

It would be a shame to come to Egypt and not visit some of the planet’s oldest and most fascinating historical sites. Luxor is around four hours away from Hurghada by car, and it’s certainly worth the journey. You’ll see sites such as the Valley of the Kings – where Tutankhamun is buried – the temples of Hatshepsut and Karnak, and the Colossi of Memnon. Your hotel will likely be able to arrange transport and guides.

This is really really bad, surely they can check their end and not make us wait even longer, have to find wi-fi everytime now. We have been scammed by orange at Hurghada airport and customer services are being very unhelpful. We paid for 43gb each. And still waiting

That is indeed unfortunate.

We had no problem with Orange at the airport kiosk and were told that activation would take about 20 mins which it did. Hopefully this is only a technical problem.

I’ve since had a look on trust pilot, it doesn’t seem to be a technical problem unfortunately, a lot of people are reporting the same.

FMI was this from an official Orange shop?

As opposed to some guy selling SIM cards along with soft drinks, cigarettes, candy?
