  • Things to Consider

A lot goes into buying the best yarn bowl and without the right information, you will regret spending your money on one. This segment has all the hints and tips that can help you make the best buy, like the features to consider when choosing a yarn bowl.

Features to consider when buying the best yarn bowl

12 Best Yarn Bowls to Make Your Knitting Process a Breeze!

Size is the top-most crucial aspect to consider. You should choose a large size yarn bowl like the Khandekar Handmade Wooden Yarn Bowl . A large bowl will make knitting more enjoyable and it can hold a big size yarn ball or several small ones at a go. When choosing a bowl, measure its diameter and ensure it is slightly larger than the largest yarn ball. It will have enough room for any yarn ball to spin and roll inside.

Another thing often overlooked is the yarn bowl’s base size. A yarn bowl with a small base size will easily tip over during knitting as it won’t allow your heavy yarn ball to roll around. Be sure to go for bowls with larger and heavier bases or non-slip bases like that of the Yarn Valet Yarn Bowl .

  • Material and finish

The materials used in a yarn bowl’s construction and its finish determine its appearance and durability. There are 4 main materials used to make yarn bowls: wood, plastic, heated clay, and ceramic. Heated clay, wooden, and ceramic yarn bowls are aesthetically appealing and durable at the same time. A heated clay or pottery yarn bowl and a ceramic yarn bowl can be delightful pieces of decoration but they are both likely to be heavier and more prone to breakage in case of an accident.

Wooden yarn bowls are also great decorative pieces but are incredibly lightweight and require less maintenance. Plastic yarn bowls also require less maintenance and are ultra-durable. However, since they are ultra-lightweight, they can feel wobbly when working with bulkier yarn balls.

12 Best Yarn Bowls to Make Your Knitting Process a Breeze!

Whichever shape you choose, ensure the curved swirl cutout of the bowl is smooth enough for an easy flow of working thread. It will also help prevent fraying of your precious yarn’s fiber or tangling.

For added convenience, you can go for a yarn bowl that has a few built-in needle holders. You can place your crochet hooks or needles in the holes/ holders whenever you take a break. Some yarn bowls like the BambooMN Yarn Bowl with Removable Lid feature a lid that allows you to organize and store your knitting materials neatly.

  • Portability

Portability is mainly determined by the size and weight of the yarn bowl. Choosing the weight of a yarn bowl is a bit tricky. It shouldn’t be so heavy but at the same time, it should be weighty enough to stay in place when you are knitting. Go for a yarn bowl with a manageable overall weight that you can easily carry from one place to another.

Some yarn bowls like the Hagestad Wooden Yarn Bowl for Knitting and Crocheting come with a travel pouch for increased portability. So, if you are an on-the-go knitter, such extra features should be your top consideration.

Nothing’s more annoying than a wobbly yarn bowl that slips off every time you pull the thread. To avoid this, you must consider a bowl’s sturdiness before paying for it. The sturdiness of a yarn bowl is mainly determined by the materials used to build it and the craftsmanship. A yarn bowl will be sturdier if its base is larger and weightier or if it’s built with non-slip material like rubber.

  Smoothness

This is hands down the most crucial consideration especially on the cutout slot area where the working yarn feeds through. If it is not smooth enough, your yarn will be frayed. You can always sand it to achieve the smoothest round edges that will allow silk and smooth passage of your yarn.

I would also highly recommend Lenny Mud yarn bowl designs if you or your friends have a cheeky sense of humor.

A Yarn Bowl is a bowl with a flat bottom and high sides, with a swirl cut on one side. This is where the working yarn is threaded through. The materials are wood, ceramic, plastic, or metal (usually aluminum). Often they have circular cutouts for storing hooks or when using more than one yarn in your project.

A yarn bowl keeps your yarn from rolling around when you are crocheting. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve tried to wrestle with tangled yarn! Chasing yarn under chairs and tables is annoying. Knots form almost instantaneously in string. (1)

The bowl’s weight allows the ball of yarn to roll around inside without getting tangled. The high sides keep it in place. Every crocheter needs some essentials (like yarn, hooks, a ruler, and stitch markers), and a yarn bowl is one!

What Is The Point Of A Yarn Bowl? – Factors & Reasons To Consider

The benefits of having a yarn bowl are numerous! Here are some:

  • The most important reason is to keep you from wasting time chasing your yarn around! You’ll feel much more content
  • Yarn bowls keep your yarn clean, preventing it from collecting fluff or dust
  • Move it wherever you feel like working on your crocheting or knitting project
  • Useful in other ways too. Like storage for things like keys or use them as a decor piece
  • Enhance your crochet or knitting experience
  • Convenient when working with multiple yarns in your projects
  • They are a yarn holder and also look beautiful in your living room
  • Keeping your yarn safe from pets
  • Easy to keep within arm’s reach
  • Add beauty to your hobby

What Size Yarn Bowl Is Best?

The best size yarn bowl is 6½ – 8″ wide and 3½ – 4½” tall. This fits most yarn balls. The sides are high enough, so it doesn’t jump out.

  • Small bowls – 4” across | 2-3” high
  • Medium size yarn bowls – 5-6” diameter | 3” high
  • Large bowls – 6-8” across | 4-5” high

How Big Should A Yarn Bowl Be?

Measure the range of the width and height of the wound balls you use. It’s best to err on the side of bigger if you use thick threads like bulky yarn.

How To Choose a Yarn Bowl

Here are my tips to pay attention to when choosing a yarn bowl:

  • Wooden, ceramic, plastic, or metal – Which material do you prefer?
  • No rough edges where the yarn comes through
  • What amount of yarn do you want to hold?
  • What style do you prefer? There are many to choose from, like classic minamlist designs or ones painted with flowers or text
  • Choose something with a good circumference
  • Wide, flat base with weight, so it’s stable when the yarn moves around
  • An opening where you thread the yarn from the top

What Can I Use Instead Of A Yarn Bowl?

You can use any of the following: a teapot, a woven basket, a colander, a plant pot with drainage holes, a tote bag, a water jug, or ziplock bags.

Yarn Bowl Buyer’s Guide

To choose the best yarn bowl for crochet and knitting projects, consider the following key features:

A. Size of the Bowl

Before you settle for which yarn bowl to buy, first consider the amount of space you have. Then, choose a decent yarn bowl size which best fits into the available space.

B. Size of Yarn

Before deciding on which yarn bowl to buy, look at the type of yarns that you regularly use . Measure your yarns at the widest point. A perfect yarn holder is that which has more inches in diameter than the diameter of your largest yarn. Thus, it will allow the yarn ball sizes to move around freely.

C. Material

Yarn bowls come in different designs, styles and sizes. They can be crafted from wood, clay, porcelain, among many other materials. However, the best yarn bowls are made of wood, plastic or ceramic. These three materials not only ensure the durability of your yarn bowl, but also keeps the yarn in place at all times.

Reasons Why You Should Use a Yarn Bowl

Irrespective of the type of crafting project that you engage in, you should always use a yarn bowl. Why? The following are six reasons why you should use a knitting yarn bowl, whether you are crocheting an afghan or merely knitting socks:

  • A yarn bowl holds your projects perfectly when you’re not crocheting or knitting .
  • It protects the yarns from pets.
  • It prevents skeins of yarn from tangling, rolling across the floor or collecting dust.
  • Yarn bowls allow users to knit and crochet safely on the outside.
  • Being stylish knitting tools, yarn bowls make beautiful decorations for your house.

Where to Buy Yarn Bowls

There are several good places you can buy your yarn bowls. For instance, if you are looking for ceramic or wooden yarn bowls for knitting , you can get these from Amazon, eBay, or any other online platform.

Also, another good place you can get wooden knitting bowls is KnitPicks. In fact, KnitPicks offers cheap deals for KnitPicks Rosewood yarn bowl and KnitPicks Maplewood yarn bowls. Knit Crate Company also offers high-quality handmade wooden yarn bowls, which can be used for weaving, knitting and crochet projects.

How do you Use a Ceramic Yarn Bowl?

To use a ceramic yarn bowl, you first have to thread the bowl. Pass the skein of yarn through the opening (hole) at the top and into the bowl. Then, using the working end, slip the strands of yarn through the hole or wrap it through the swirl. This will depend on the type of guide that your yarn bowl provides.

If your ceramic yarn bowl is designed with curved slots or yarn bowl holes for crochet hooks and knitting needles , you can also slip these through the holes. You can do this either from the outside or inside the yarn bowl. Your ceramic yarn bowl will then be ready for use so that you can start your knitting or crocheting.

How do you Use a Wooden Yarn Bowl?

Wooden yarn bowls work in a similar manner as ceramic knitting bowls. All you need to do is thread the end of your yarn through the swirl. Alternatively, you can slip it through the yarn slots if that is what your bowl offers. After threading the yarn strands, you can then start knitting or crocheting your projects.

How do you Make a Yarn Ball?

Winding skeins of yarn into a ball is very easy. To make a ball of yarn with hands, start by winding it using 2 to 3 fingers. Repeat this process 10 to 12 times. Then, slide the yarn off the fingers in a gentle manner.

Fold your yarn in half, such that it sits over itself. Continue winding the string around the ball of yarn. The ball might look quite messy as you start off. However, as you continue winding and turning the ball, your yarn will start to take up a beautiful ball shape.

While rolling yarn into a ball, remember to twist the ball around regularly. Doing so will ensure that the ball of yarn is evenly distributed.

What is a Yarn Bowl Winder?

A yarn bowl winder is a tool used for holding and keeping the yarn in place. It is usually round or oval shaped, and is designed with a swirl or holes in the side where the yarn is passed through. By keeping the yarn in place, a yarn bowl winder not only prevents tangled yarns, but also ensures that yarn balls do not collect dust or become pet toys.

What Size Yarn Bowl is Best?

Knitting yarn bowls are designed with different sizes. There are small yarn bowls which range from 2 to 4 inches. There are also medium-sized bowls with a diameter of 5 to 6 inches, as well as large-sized ones with yarn bowl dimensions ranging from 6 to 8 inches.

The best size yarn bowl is that which is big enough to accommodate your skeins of yarn comfortably. Also, go for those yarn bowls with taller sides. The extra inches tall are more effective at keeping the yarn skeins from popping out, especially when the yarn is pulled on too hard or too fast.

A knitting yarn bowl is just as beautiful and stylish as it is functional. Therefore, if you want to ensure that you always have a fun knitting or crocheting experience, gift yourself one of the above ten favorite yarn bowls. Your crafting experience will never be same once you start using a quality yarn bowl for all your projects!

Best Yarn Bowls Pinterest image

The design of most yarn bowls is similar. They’re sometimes referred to as a yarn holder bowl. Most have a bowl shape with a swirled section cut out on one side. You thread the string of yarn through there. When you pull the yarn ball, it acts as a guide and feeds the length of the fiber without snagging.

The weight of at the bottom allows the ball of yarn to roll around inside without getting tangled. The high sides keep it in place. A perfect yarn holder. No need to keep the ball in your lap. They often have circular cutouts for storing straight needles, or using more than one skein in your colorwork project.

A yarn bowl is also known as a crafter bowl.

How Big Should It Be?

Take measurements of your wound ball’s width and height. You need a bowl fitting those specifications. If you use bulky yarn, go bigger.

Why Do Your Need One?

  • To keep your sanity! Your knitting experience is meant to be pleasurable. Chasing yarn under tables, chairs, and your sofa isn’t fun. Nor is knotted, tangled yarn. Strings form knots almost instantly.  (1) Prevent tangling with one of these.
  • They keep your balls, hanks & skeins clean, preventing it from collecting fluff or dust. (Knitting is more important than housework!)
  • They’re not easy for a cat, dog or other pets to move around. There are cute pictures of cats playing with yarn. Sure they’re adorable, as long as it’s NOT YOUR YARN !
  • Keeps it out of reach from curious children
  • Move it to wherever you feel like knitting. Glorious sunny day outside? Take it outdoors and know the yarn isn’t going to get dirty.
  • The whole purpose is to be a holder and look beautiful on your coffee table. More attractive than a bag.
  • They’re good for other crafts like crocheting
  • Makes an excellent decor piece in your house (Something to show off when you have company over 🙂)

Are Yarn Bowls Any Good?

Sure! Yes Yarn Bowls are good. Their high quality, durability, and beauty make them a great choice. They make a real difference to your knitting life. Any fiber arts lover would appreciate them.

What Can I Use Instead Of A Yarn Bowl?

There are other ways to keep skeins tangle-free! Listed are a few options to choose from: a tote bag, a teapot, a colander, a plant pot (with drainage holes), ziplock bags, a woven basket, or a water jug.

Why Are There Holes?

There are holes in yarn bowls for the following reasons:

  • Rest your knitting needles when not in use.
  • If working with multiple yarns, thread each of them through a hole. Great for stranded knitting, Intarsia, or Fair Isle patterns. (Remember, you’ll need to cut the working strand threaded through a hole so you remove it from the top.)
  • The holes prevent you from yanking the yarn out when it gets smaller.

How To Choose – Factors To Consider

  • The pottery (wood, plastic, or metal) needs to be smooth where the strand comes out. Even the smallest rough edge catches and frays the yarn. You don’t want your knitting project falling apart!
  • They need a wide, flat base, so it won’t tip over when a dense ball is rolling around.
  • A wooden knitting bowl of lightweight wood is great when traveling.
  • It needs an opening where the yarn slips through from the top. Otherwise, it’s more challenging to take it out.
  • High walls are best, or the ball spins right out!
  • You’ll benefit with two slots if you are an avid color-work knitter. Two colors remain untangled
  • If you knit with a large unwound skein, an oblong shape is good.

Where To Buy Yarn Bowls?

You can buy them online. Shop at handmade Etsy stores for unique products. Shop at Knit Picks, Crochet.com. Check each shop for the costs for shipping add this to the total amount in your cart.

Such incredible inventions. They make knitting much easier and enjoyable, with less mess! Worth the investment. That’s a fact. 🙂 Do you use a yarn bowl? Any recommendations? Tell me in the comments!

Ok, so I checked out your site for ideas/recommendations for my first yarn bowl. (I’m a half step above newbie in the knitting world.) Only now I seriously want to start a knitting bowl collection! These are adorable! I think I will start with rosewood and work my way through them. Thank you for such great advice!

What a beautiful chunky yarn in the header pic. What brand/color is it?

Hi Krissy. I will have to check. Cheers Jodie

Hi Krissy it looks like Malabrigo Rasta Yarn but I can’t find the colorway. Sorry I couldn’t be more help.

I love this website! This list came in very handy in helping me pick a great yarn bowl for my girlfriend.

That’s wonderful Joaquin you were able to find a yarn bowl for your girlfriend. Thanks so much for your kind words. Cheers Jodie

What is a Yarn Bowl?

A yarn bowl is a bowl that keeps your yarn contained while you knit or crochet. They’re sometimes referred to as “knitting bowls” or “yarn holders.”

If you’re into knitting or crocheting, you’ve probably experienced the frustration of dealing with a rebellious ball of yarn. It loves to roll around, fall off the table, and unravel at the most inconvenient times. Managing the yarn while working on your project can be a real challenge. But fear not! That’s where a yarn bowl comes to the rescue. It’s a handy tool that keeps your yarn neat and in one place, saving you from all the hassle and worries. Say goodbye to yarn chaos and hello to stress-free crafting!

I was gifted this ceramic yarn bowl a few years ago and have never not used one since. I cannot recommend them enough so if you work with yarn , definitely get one (or multiple!). I also recommend them in best craft gifts and best gifts for crocheters and knitters .

What's the Difference Between a Yarn Bowl and a Regular Bowl?

Yarn bowls have this neat little swirl at the top that goes along the side. It’s there to hold your yarn while you’re working on your project. Some yarn bowls even have a hole or two for extra security. You can use either option to keep your yarn in place, but this is the main difference between a yarn bowl and a regular bowl.

If you were to put your yarn in a regular bowl, the ball of yarn would just bounce around and probably fall out. That’s because the yarn gets pulled along the top of the bowl. But with a yarn bowl, the yarn comes out through the side, keeping the ball of yarn nice and contained.

Furthermore, the bowl is typically wider at the bottom than it is at the top to help keep the yarn towards the bottom of the bowl.

How to Choose a Yarn Bowl

While it may seem as though all yarn bowls are the same, there are actually a few factors you’ll still want to consider:

  • Portability

a blue and white ceramic yarn bowl with pink yarn inside and a purple glitter printed yarn bowl

Difference in Sizes of Yarn Bowls

Yarn bowls come in all sorts of sizes, so the first thing to consider is how big of a bowl you actually need. The larger ones can hold more yarn, but they also take up more space. On the flip side, small knitting bowls don’t require as much room, but they won’t hold as much yarn either. It’s all about finding the right balance for your knitting needs.

Therefore you want to consider the yarn you’re using for a project – is it a very large skein? Then you’ll need a larger bowl. Do you need to use multiple balls of yarn at once like I did while making the reversible beanie ? Then you again need a larger bowl to allow for all of the balls of yarn to move around.

However, if you are using a single average-sized ball of yarn at a time for your projects, you can get away with having a smaller yarn bowl (like I did with my loom knit hat  and while making pom poms ).

Yarn Bowl Weight

The weight of a yarn holder is important for two reasons: portability and keeping your yarn in place while you work. The lighter the bowl, the easier it is to carry around. However, this also means the bowl is more likely to move while you’re working. If you’re an average knitter or crocheter, this might not be a big concern since the yarn won’t bounce around as much. So, when choosing a yarn holder, consider the balance between portability and stability based on your own preferences and needs.

However, if you’re knitting with a knitting machine , for example, then your yarn will bounce around a lot and actually push your bowl with it. Therefore if you’re going to use a machine to knit, then you’ll want a heavier bowl (such as a ceramic yarn bowl).

Yarn Bowl Portability

When choosing a yarn bowl, it’s important to consider how portable you need it to be. Are you someone who knits on the go, or do you mostly knit at home? If you’re a frequent traveler, there are yarn holders specifically designed for travel that would be a great fit for you. On the other hand, if you’re often on the move, I wouldn’t recommend getting a heavy ceramic bowl. While they can be beautiful, they can also be quite cumbersome to carry around.

Yarn Bowl Features

When it comes to features, you’ll need to decide if you want a hole in the bowl and maybe even multiple holes if you plan on using multiple yarns at once. Some knitting bowls even come with lids for that extra bit of security.

Don’t forget to pin it so you can come back to it later!

Best Yarn Bowl in Each Category

To make it easy to choose the right yarn bowl for you, I’ve created this list of the best yarn bowls in each category. Or you can continue scrolling to read more about each one.

You’ll notice none of the bowls I recommend do not have a spiral opening. This is because I simply can’t recommend a knitting bowl that requires you to keep the yarn in it and only use a hole to feed the yarn through.

The advantage to wooden yarn bowls is they’re durable, typically on the lighter side, and they’re simply beautiful.

Knit Picks Two-Toned Wooden Yarn Bowl

Buy on Knit Picks

knit picks two toned wooden yarn bowl

This one  from Knit Picks has a gorgeous two-toned design made of maplewood. The opening measures 5.75″, and it’s about 3.5″ tall, making it perfect for holding a single ball of yarn. The only drawback is that it doesn’t have a hole, in case that’s something you’re looking for.

Knit Picks Dark Brown Mango Wooden Yarn Bowl

Dark Brown Mango Wood yarn bowl

If you want a classic look with the option for multiple strands, this one from Knit Picks is a great option. It’s made of mango wood and is 6.5″ at the widest point (4.5″ at it’s smallest) and is 4″ tall.

Laborwood Yarn Bowl

travel yarn bowl

This is a beautiful, simple wooden bowl. The main advantage to this one is the holes and spiral opening is larger than most so it can fit thicker yarns. Therefore if you tend to use thick yarns, this is the one I definitely recommend. It has a 7″ diameter and is 4″ tall.

Ceramic yarn bowls.

These are the heaviest bowls you’ll find, so if you want something that won’t budge, these are the ones to go for. Just make sure you don’t drop them!

Milltown Merchants Bowl

travel yarn bowl

This adorable bowl is made by Milltown Merchants and has a fun whimsical vibe with the offset spiral opening. It’s a bit on the smaller side, measuring at 4″ tall with a 5″ diameter opening. However, this makes it a great option if you don’t work with large balls of yarn. It also has the 3 holes for additional options and comes in this cute blue, white, or black.

Personalized Name Ceramic Yarn Bowl

Buy on Etsy

NewMoonStudio mediterranean breeze knitting bowl with blue white and brown

This bowl by MaidofClay  is just too cool! You have the option to turn your name into a bowl, with one of the letters forming a swirl to hold the yarn. It’s a fun and creative way to personalize your bowl.

The only down side is it’s limited to 9 letters so if you have a longer name, you might need to get creative. It also doesn’t have to be a name at all and you can have it say something such as “Knitter” or “Dog Mom” or “Ew, David” if you’re a Schitt’s Creek fans.

It’s 5.5″ in diameter and ~3.5″ tall and the letters become the holes for the yarn.

NewMoonStudio Mediterranean Breeze Yarn Bowl

NewMoonStudio mediterranean breeze knitting bowl with blue white and brown

This bowl from NewMoonStudio  is simply stunning. It has the additional hole for added functionality, but it also looks beautiful with the three tones. The down side is it’s a shorter bowl at 3″ tall, but it has a standard diameter of 6″.

Rainbow Ceramic Yarn Bowl

travel yarn bowl

This rainbow bowl may look as though it’s made of metal, but it’s actually ceramic. I really love how vibrant this one is – just looking at it puts a smile on my face. The outside is plated, but the inside is made of white ceramic.

It’s on the larger side at 7″ wide and 5″ tall so if you’re looking for something a little bit bigger, this could be a good option.

Portable Yarn Holders

If you knit or crochet on the go, you’ll want a yarn holder built for portability. These are lighter and protect the yarn even more.

The Yarn It by Prym

travel yarn bowl

The Yarn It is a great option if you’re looking for a portable yarn holder. It’s 6″ in diameter and has two yarn holding options.

This knitting ball is amazing! It’s designed to open up in the middle, so you can easily retrieve your yarn. Plus, it comes with a stand that fits perfectly in a standard cup holder. Perfect for all you car knitters out there! And guess what? It even comes with a strap, so you can wear it like a purse and knit on the go. How cool is that?

It even comes with a strap so you can where it around like a purse so you can knit on the go! How fun is that?

Big Sully by Prym

travel yarn bowl

The Big Sully is another  good portable option . It’s much larger than the Yarn It at around 8-9″ wide. It has 6 holes so you can use up to 6 balls of yarn in it (but keep in mind, they would need to be smaller balls). While it doesn’t fit into a cup holder, it does have a non-slip base to prevent it from moving around while you knit or crochet.

The Big Sully is packed with awesome features! It even has a knitting needle gauge built into the top, so you can measure your needles and crochet hooks on the go. The base even pops off, allowing you to store small items like needles and measuring tape. But wait, there’s more! It also has an optional yarn spindle, so you can slide your ball of yarn through it for extra security and a more even feed.

Knitting Bag

travel yarn bowl

Now this knitting bag isn’t exactly a bowl, but it serves the same purpose so I’m including it in the list. Unlike other portable options, this knitting bag is collapsible, making it easier to store. Plus, it’s got extra pockets to hold all your knitting essentials such as needles, crochet hooks, and scissors. So convenient!

It’s huge with an 11″ diameter and 13″ height so it can store a very large ball of yarn or a few normal sized balls. Then what I like about this one is unlike other knitting bags that only have holes at the top, this one has a slit you can remove the ball of yarn if you don’t want it permanently in the bag.

Large Yarn Bowls

If you use large balls of yarn or need a bowl that has room for multiple balls of yarn, I definitely recommend one of these large yarn bowls.

Fash O' Knit Large Wooden Yarn Bowl

3d printed yarn bowl by LEPrintworks

This bowl by Fash O’ Knit is quite large at 8″ in diameter and 4″ tall so you can hold larger balls of yarn or multiple small balls.

I really like how there’s a contrasting wood stripe in the middle, giving it a unique look. The only downside is that it doesn’t have the extra holes if that’s something you’re looking for.

Make Your Own Magic Ceramic Yarn Bowl

travel yarn bowl

This is not only a larger yarn bowl, but it’s also made of ceramic . I love the unique opening as it’s not an actual spiral and the saying of “Make your own magic” is pretty cute as well. It comes in this greenish blue color as well as a blue or a gold plated color.

It’s not the largest bowl out there, but it’s at least a bit bigger than most at 6.5″ in diameter and 4.5″ tall.

Bamboo Yarn Box

travel yarn bowl

I love this one because it’s so unique so it fits into both categories. But this one is not just any ordinary bowl, it’s actually a box! And the best part is, it comes with a lid to keep those balls of yarn from escaping.

It’s made of bamboo and is bigger than most at 6.5″ for the length width, and height on the inside.

Unique and funny yarn bowls.

These are not your standard bowls so if you’re looking for something more unique, I definitely suggest one of these.

There are actually plenty of funny yarn bowls out there that resemble a creature or person vomiting yarn, but I haven’t come across one that also has a spiral opening. So, I wouldn’t recommend those because your yarn would have to stay in the bowl.

Counting Stitches Ceramic Yarn Bowl

funny yarn bowl with saying 'a question asked while coutning stitches will be answered with louder counitng'

I’m all about fancy looking items with ridiculous sayings on them so of course I just love this one . This funny yarn bowl says “A question asked while I’m counting stitches will be answered with louder counting.”  The inside is painted red for a fun pop of color.

It doesn’t have a hole, but it’s made of ceramic so it’s heavier. It’s an average sized bowl at 5.5″ in diameter and 3.5″ tall.

Unicorn Yarn Bowl

travel yarn bowl

For the kids at heart, this is an absolutely adorable bowl for you. You can get it on Amazon , but keep in mind it’s on the smaller side at only 4.5″ in diameter and 4″ tall. However, it gives you the option of a spiral opening and two holes.

It even comes with a top to completely secure the yarn inside.

Funny Face Yarn Bowl

funny yarn bowl with saying 'a question asked while coutning stitches will be answered with louder counitng'

You can get these from  Dirt on Your Skirt on Etsy . They’re definitely not your run of the mill bowls and they come in all sorts of expressions , but this orange one is one of my favorites.

The side of the mouth is used as the opening so it looks like it’s eating the yarn. It’s an average size with the outside dimensions of 6.5″ in diameter and 4″ tall.

3D Printed Yarn Bowl

3d printed yarn bowl by LEPrintworks

If you have a 3D printer, you can actually print your own yarn bowl! I had my boyfriend print me this one in purple glitter ( here’s the link ) and it came out adorable (it’s the image on the right).

One downside of using a 3D printed bowl is that they’re incredibly lightweight. If you’re not careful, the yarn can easily push the bowl around. Luckily, the one I have has a removable base so you can add some weight to keep it steady. Another thing to keep in mind is that it’s important to sand down the edges to prevent the yarn from getting caught.

However, if you don’t have a 3D printer you can still buy one – for example you can get the ones in the first image on  Etsy from LEPrintworks . It comes in all sorts of colors and they have different sizes as well.

What Is the Best Yarn to Use When Making a Blanket?

Whether you knit or crochet, there are factors to consider—warmth, durability, and if it's machine washable.

Roxanna is a freelance writer for MarthaStewart.com.

travel yarn bowl

One of the best things to do in the cold months of winter is to bundle up in a warm knit blanket that you made yourself. Blankets also make great gifts for everyone on your list, and that's true during the holiday season, for birthdays, or just because. Why? Because everyone needs something warm and cozy at night, especially when the temperatures drop. "Blankets are interesting projects because they bring up a choice for the knitter in choosing warmth or longevity of the blanket as their main concern," explains Carson Demers, a physical therapist who specializes in ergonomics and author of Knitting Comfortably: The Ergonomics of Handknitting . "Some yarns are spun to be lofty (woolen spun) and will trap air better than yarns are not. This will produce warmer blankets."

Fiber Material and Care

Demers says that you will want to consider the size of the blanket and how it will need to be cleaned. "If you plan to toss your blanket into the washer, you'll need either a synthetic yarn (like an acrylic) or a superwash yarn, which is a natural fiber that has been treated to allow washing without shrinking," he says. "If you don't mind hand-washing (and I don't at all) then you can use any fiber."

Woolen spun or lofty yarns are best for warmer blankets. This is because the fibers trap air better and the blanket will be able to hold in heat. For example, Barrett Wool Co.'s Wisconsin Woolen Spun Yarn ( $18.50, barrettwoolco.com ) comes in a variety of colors that can be used in a warm blanket . The wool-spinning process involves cleaning, carding, and spinning. The carder machine is important because it opens up the fibers and blends them into a soft sheet that looks like a wooly web.

In contrast, worsted-spun yarns such as Brooklyn Tweed's Arbor ( $14.50, brooklyntweed.com ) are firmer spun. The worsted-spinning process means that the yarn "will last longer because of the spinning technique, are likely to pill less, and be heavier," explains Demers. These yarns may not be as warm as the woolen-spun ones, but they may last longer . Of course, that doesn't mean that a blanket made from worsted yarn won't be warm at all, only that it will not hold in as much heat as woolen-spun yarn.

Ergonomics of Blanket-Making

The type of yarn you choose can also have an effect on your hands . "Ergonomically speaking, untreated (non-superwash) wools offer less work for the knitter's hands than their superwashed counterparts because the process that makes the yarn washable makes them more slippery to work with," explains Demers. "It would be important to spend extra time choosing a needle that compliments the slipperiness of the yarn; for example, a grippier needle."

Demers also recommends using a circular needle for knitting a blanket, or knitting the blanket in sections and seaming them together. "The weight of the blanket should rest on the knitter's lap (or, if you're standing, you can hold it under your arm against your body)," he says. "Single point needles put the weight of the project behind the knitter's hands and make it hard work for the forearm muscles to support it while it's being worked. This can lead to a tendinitis at the elbow."

How to Use a Yarn Bowl (and What To Look For When Buying One)

Table of Contents

Do you have a yarn bowl? If not, then you’re missing out on a great tool for your knitting and crochet. Many people don’t think a of this as a necessary tool. And while that’s strictly true, you might find that it adds to the ease and joy of your crafting if you get one. Let’s talk about how to use a yarn bowl. And, if you’re going to buy one, what you should look for as you do.

Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. I receive a percentage of sales from those links but your price doesn’t go up. I appreciate your support.

Using a specialized container for your yarn

What Is a Yarn Bowl?

A yarn bowl is, as the name suggests, a vessel for your yarn. More specifically, you place a single ball of the yarn you’re working with into that container. People who don’t know how to use a yarn bowl are sometimes surprised by this. For example, they assume that the ball holds the yarn decoratively when you’re not using it. While you can certainly display the container – with or without a ball in it – as a form of decoration, that’s not it’s main purpose.

Your yarn bowl is bowl-shaped (although it might also have a slightly more creative shape, like that of a cat or a panda .) It has at least one hole in the side. The hole be a simple circle, a more organic shape, or another decorative design. Regardless of the shape, the point is to thread the yarn end through the hole. Therefore, the ball of fiber stays in the bowl, while you pull on that end to work with the yarn. It’s an easy way to keep your yarn in one place as you work.

Ceramic chicken for your yarn

How to Use a Yarn Bowl

Basically, here’s how you’re going to make use of this great tool:

  • Place the ball of fiber that you’re working with into the bowl. If you’re working with more than one ball in a project (for example, you’re doing striping), then you’ll put each ball into its own yarn ball.
  • Pull the end of the fiber through the hole in the yarn bowl. Make sure that the ball of yarn is secure in the container. You should be able to tug on the end without the ball popping out of the bowl.
  • Place the container next to you as you craft. You can play around with positions but basically it should be located close to the hand with your working yarn. You’ll be pulling gently on the yarn so that it keeps coming out through the yarn bowl’s hole.
  • If you have two or more yarn bowls, place them far enough apart so that the yarn doesn’t tangle while you work.

If you stop working mid-project, then you may set your project into the yarn bowl atop the ball of yarn. Tuck your crochet hook or knitting needles into the yarn ball. It’s a great way to keep everything organized in one place.

What Are The Benefits?

These are the main benefits you’ll discover:

  • Your yarn doesn’t get tangled as you work. This is especially helpful when working with two balls of yarn in one project.
  • The balls of yarn don’t stray away from you. How many times have you had to get up to grab the yarn that dropped off your lap?
  • Your yarn stays clean. Yarn easily picks up pet hair, lint, and other stuff when it’s in your lap or on your bed. However, putting it into a yarn bowl keeps it clean.
  • It keeps your yarn in one place when you travel. It’s great for road trips and plane rides.
  • It’s a pretty addition to your craft space. Little things like this enhance the craft experience.

Choose and use a bowl for your yarn

What Features To Look For

So, now you know how to use a yarn bowl. Moreover, you know why you might want to get a few. But how do you know what makes a good yarn bowl?

First, decide on the material that you want for your yarn bowl. They come in a variety of different materials. Many people prefer them made of wood because the yarn moves around smoothly inside. Therefore, it’s easy to pull out the yarn as you work. You’ll find yarn bowls made of different types of wood, such as beautiful teak wood and hand-painted wood. That said, there are also ones made of clay and ceramic , as well as bowls made from a variety of other materials. Test a few out to see what’s right for you.

Next, you’ll want to think about yarn bowl sizes. What size yarn balls / cakes do you typically use? Obviously, if you work with big, bulky ones then you’re going to need jumbo containers . In contrast, you might find that your yarn fits better in a smaller container.

Other than that, it really just depends on your style preferences. You might find that different sizes or shapes of holes work best for you. You might find that you like deeper or more shallow yarn bowls. After you learn how to use a yarn bowl, you can try different ones to find the one that’s truly perfect for you.

Ewan McGregor (‘A Gentleman in Moscow’) is coming for that Emmy bookend

Ewan   McGregor has added another exquisite performance to his CV of contrasting characters thanks to his starring role in the Paramount+ limited series “A Gentleman in Moscow.” Based on Amor Towles ‘ book of the same name and created by Ben Vanstone , “A Gentleman in Moscow” follows McGregor as Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov, an aristocrat who returns to Russia from Paris only to find himself living in a hotel attic for decades after the October Revolution.

McGregor is always wildly entertaining, possessing distinct charm and charisma, and he employs that to great effect once more here. However, his comic abilities are matched by his dramatic ones in “A Gentleman in Moscow,” as noted by critics.

Library streaming service Kanopy reveals GLAAD Pride Month movie picks for June

Box office: Will Smith's 'Bad Boys: Ride or Die' blows up with $104.6 global opening

Christina Izzo ( The AV Club ) observed: “It’s smart casting, then, that showrunner Ben Vanstone (‘All Creatures Great And Small’) and the powers that be chose McGregor as the eponymous gentleman, replacing the originally cast Kenneth Branagh . McGregor’s Rostov has elements of Branaghian campiness—that twirled mustache looks plucked straight off Poirot’s face and is complemented by a similarly over-the-top permed ’do—but all that initial extravagance and exaggeration is softened by the actor’s sincere eyes and easy charm… it’s McGregor’s sentimental yet sophisticated turn that ultimately keeps the dance going… McGregor delicately guides the Count through the country’s many political changes and the character’s own internal revolutions, from entitled dandy to devoted dad, and in the process conceives a fine Russian gentleman indeed.”

David Opie ( Empire ) opined: “An aristocrat forced to languish in the world’s most opulent prison, he could have been a rather unsympathetic figure, but Ewan McGregor’s magnetic performance doesn’t give you even a second to consider that. Showrunner Ben Vanstone has struck gold with a lead as talented and charming as McGregor, rarely on finer form than he is here. Tonally, the show is a big ask, blending bleak historical realism with cosy Sunday-night-style viewing, but McGregor balances these shifts with natural ease… McGregor’s Count who makes the show worth watching.”

Joel Keller ( Decider ) explained: “McGregor has been around long enough for us to not be surprised by such a performance; for three decades, he’s shown himself to be able to handle light material as well as dark. But with Rostov, he has to handle both at once, often in the same scene. His wistfulness over not being able to leave can happen right before a funny interaction with Nina, or his regret over a role in a duel can affect him right after he has an interesting experience at the barber shop. He makes an oligarch into a sympathetic figure, one who grows and changes with his imprisonment, and that’s awfully tough to pull off.”

Our current predicted nominees for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor are Jon Hamm (“Fargo”), Andrew Scott (“Ripley”), Richard Gadd (“Baby Reindeer”), Tom Hollander (“Feud: Capote vs the Swans”), Matt Bomer (“Fellow Travelers”), and Tony Shalhoub (“Mr. Monk’s Last Case”). However, don’t rule out Emmy-favorite McGregor, who has five prior bids to his name.

He was first nominated in 1997 — for Best Drama Guest Actor for “ER.” He was then nominated for Outstanding Narrator in 2017 for “Highlands: Scotland’s Wild Heart.” That same year, he was cited for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor for “Fargo.” In 2021, he won his first Emmy for his leading role in the limited series “Halston.” He was also nominated for Best Limited Series in 2023 as a producer on “Obi-Wan Kenobi.”

He is a respected actor and is clearly well-liked by Emmy voters. The fact that two of his nominations, and his victory, came in the same category he is hoping to reap a nomination in this year is a good sign. He’s something of a limited series specialist and he could add to that record with another nomination this year.

McGregor is a household name and, thanks to his many years starring in major movies and TV roles, chiefly his turn as Obi-Wan Kenobi in “Star Wars,” he is an A-list actor. Emmy voters love nominating movie stars in this category, with the likes of Daniel Radcliffe (“Weird: The Al Yankovic Story”), Sebastian Stan (“Pam & Tommy”), Andrew Garfield (“Under the Banner of Heaven”), Colin Firth (“The Staircase”), Michael Keaton (“Dopesick”), Paul Bettany (“WandaVision”), and Hugh Grant (“The Undoing”) all receiving citations in recent years.

Specifically, voters seem to like it when actor who are renowned for iconic roles in franchises turn their focus onto smaller, more dramatic works. “Harry Potter” actor Radcliffe was nominated for “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story;” “Spider-Man” star Garfield was cited for “Under the Banner of Heaven;” and “Batman” performer Keaton picked up a bid for “Dopesick. Obi-Wan Kenobi and “Star Wars” thespian McGregor has already proven that Emmy voters like him in other projects thanks to his bids for “Fargo” and “Halston.” He could add another example here with “A Gentleman in Moscow.”

This Paramount+ show is also a period drama, a genre that is well-liked by Emmy voters in this category. Michael Shannon (“George & Tammy”), Evan Peters (“Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”), Kumail Nanjiani (“Welcome to Chippendales”), Stan (“Pam & Tommy”), McGregor himself (“Halston”), Jeremy Pope (“Hollywood”), Sam Rockwell (“Fosse/Verdon”), and Grant (“A Very English Scandal”) have all received bids for their performances in period dramas.

Report: Cal Will Continue to Play in Bowl Games with Pac-12 Ties for 2 Years

Jeff faraudo | jun 6, 2024.

Jaydn Ott

  • California Golden Bears

Story updated

The Atlantic Coast Conference, Cal’s new home beginning in the fall, announced its bowl schedule for 2024 on Thursday, but so-called legacy members of the Pac-12 -- including the Bears -- will continue to play in bowl games currently lined up with the Pac-12.

Brett McMurphy of the Action Network reported the news earlier this week, just before the ACC announced its bowl schedule for the 2024 football season on Thursday.

Alamo Bowl’s attempt to be allowed to choose SEC-bound Texas or Oklahoma in 2024 & 2025 was denied, sources told @ActionNetworkHQ . Also, all former Pac-12 teams will play in Pac-12 bowls next 2 years & not in bowls affiliated w/their new leagues https://t.co/Q9YFUsHryz — Brett McMurphy (@Brett_McMurphy) June 3, 2024

The ruling appears to be the result of the Alamo Bowl being denied the chance to replace its Pac-12 team with new Southeastern Conference members Texas or Oklahoma the next two seasons.

“Allowing the Alamo to take OU or Texas instead of a Pac-12 legacy team would have caused a lot of issues with the SEC bowls,” a source told McMurphy. “And we don’t like issues.”

The contract between 10 conferences and the bowl games runs through 2025, so for now, at least, those affiliations will remain in place.

The Bears, whose appearance in the Independence Bowl last year was their first postseason bid since 2019, will eventually be introduced to a new lineup of potential bowl partners with the ACC.

Gone will be the Alamo, Las Vegas, Sun, LA and Independence bowls.

The Holiday Bowl, in which Cal has played three times, is listed as to be announced by the ACC and is not currently included in the national lineup of bowl games.

The Rose Bowl — a significant bucket-list item for Old Blues — remains in play but will require an exceptional season by the Bears. Along with the Fiesta, Peach and Sugar bowls, the Rose Bowl is slotted as one of four CFP quarterfinal games in the new, 12-team college football playoff.

The next thing Cal fans will notice is that, apparently beginning in 2026, significant travel will be required to attend any of the ACC-affiliated bowl games. Other than the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl on Dec. 31 at El Paso, Texas, every other bowl game with ACC ties is located more than 2,000 miles from the Bay Area.

Because of the time-zone difference, only two of the games involving ACC teams will have late afternoon PT kickoffs. And one of them -- the Fenway Bowl in Boston -- will get started at 8 a.m. PT.

Here’s the ACC bowl schedule:

Friday, December 20, 2024

Gasparilla Bowl (Tampa, Florida) – 12:30 p.m. PT / ESPN

Friday, December 27, 2024

Birmingham Bowl (Birmingham, Alabama) – 9 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. PT / ESPN

Saturday, December 28, 2024

Fenway Bowl (Boston, Massachusetts) – 8 a.m. PT / ESPN

Pinstripe Bowl (The Bronx, New York) – 9 a.m. PT / ABC

Pop-Tarts Bowl (Orlando, Florida) – 12:30 p.m. PT / ABC

Military Bowl presented by GoBowling.com (Washington DC) – 2:45 p.m. PT / ESPN

Tuesday, December 31, 2024

Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl (El Paso, Texas) – 11 a.m. PT / CBS

Thursday, January 2, 2025

Gator Bowl (Jacksonville, Florida) – 4:30 p.m. PT / ESPN

Friday, January 3, 2025

Duke’s Mayo Bowl (Charlotte, North Carolina) – 4:30 p.m. PT / ESPN
