You don’t want to be ‘that’ tourist. Watch out for these common tourist traps in Venice

Venice a city of wonders and of...tourist traps.

We love to show you the beauty of Venice, its traditions, its places and its events and hope to make many of you desire to come here. For this reason, we also feel responsible towards every single one of you and want to avoid you any possible hassle or problem.

First of all, let us assure you that Venice is an incredibly safe city. In Venice, Murano and Burano, a girl can walk around even very late at night in whichever part of the city and  never be in danger .

Most of the dangers or annoyances in Venice, unfortunately, are caused by people who want to trick and exploit unaware and trustful tourists .

We tried to summarize a few of these (mainly economic) dangers , in order for you to know what to stay away from  and to make sure you have a beautiful time  all through your stay in Venice .

P.s.: as we will mention more than a few criminal behaviors, if we should suddenly disappear, please call 911

They might look like official taxis but they are not. Hopping on a fake taxi is an expensive mistake.

While taxi drivers might be perceived as expensive by a broad audience, their price has been established together with the city and it is fixed for certain routes, usually between 80€ and 110€ in daytime .

Fake drivers , on the other hand, won’t tell you any price and will, illegally, get you on board. Only at a later stage they might tell you their staggering high personally-made-up-cost for the ride and force you to pay.

Keep your eyes open! You really don’t want to be in a boat with someone forcing you to pay 300€.

Book an authentic experience in Venice

If it has a man hailing people on the street and an outdoor menu with flags and translations, which might even been called a 'tourist menu', then it is a restaurant you might want to avoid....

If you’re urged into a restaurant by an “Italian looking” person, who calls after passers-by and invites them to check out their “Italian food” menu… RUN!

While high prices are not always a guarantee for quality, a “tourist menu” is almost certainly a guarantee for some underwhelming frozen food experience.

For Italian standards, Venice is an expensive city, and so is the food, even in the supermarkets. It is by no means possible to offer a full menu with fresh ingredients at 10 or 12 euros.

Masks costing less than 20 euros can't be made in Venice. Chances are you're looking at made in China masks, a threat to your Health.

Authentic costume and mask. This does not represent a risk for your healt as do the fake mass produced masks "for decorative use only" sold in cheap souvenirs shop as wearable.

In the past 10 years, Venice has been flooded with cheap , made-in-Asia, mass-produced souvenirs shops that have replaced shops essential for the life in Venice, and have made the life of genuine artisans much harder.

Besides the social and economic consequences Venetians are facing, there is a something else at threat: “just” your  Health .

Among the extremely cheap souvenirs that can be found all over the city, there are clearly also masks.

These masks do not comply with EU legislations regulating the colors and substances allowed for wearable products: the contact between these masks and your skin is potentially dangerous and harmful for your health. Why on earth do vendors get permission to sell them?

In Italian we say that once a law is written, a loophole is found: these masks are allowed to be sold “ for decorative use only “, and are labeled as such.

These labels, however, are extremely small, “tend to fall off”, and those salesmen somehow tend to forget to tell you about them…

Side view of the Canal Grande of Murano, with people on both fondamente of the side canal. On the background a bridge, the belltower of the Church of Santa Maria and San Donato. Blue sky with clouds

We personally have and wear a few masks each, and our skin is in perfect health. We let you guess if we got ours from an artisan or if we picked the “for decorative use only” ones…

The picture above shows a genuine and beautiful handmade mask.

There are no real beggars in the street of Venice. Don't fall for this organised extorsion.

It saddens and frustrates every Venetian when we see generous and good-hearted visitor giving money to beggars . “What?! Why?!”, you may wonder.

Venice is a small pedestrian city, and inhabitants and workers tend to know each other’s faces. Among those faces we learned to recognize, there are also those of said beggars who fake disabilities and terrible diseases.

These well-organized healthy people and their cunning faces can be seen reaching early in the morning from the mainland, all straight and in full health , and getting ready to mischief the good-hearted people who think they’re helping someone in need.

Money given to these people is money given to criminal organizations .

Like in every other city, there are homeless people in Venice, some of them being very well known and loved by every one of us.

These people are given food and some help by the inhabitants themselves, receive free  assistance from the State , and are followed by amazing volunteers that offer love and help to those in need.

These people do not stay in the most crowded area nor would they call after you asking for money.

If you see people wearing costumes asking for money around venice, they are not legit and they might even blackmail you..

A new illegal trend that started back in 2014, consists of people standing in busy areas wearing horrible plastic costumes and makeup, inviting you smiling to take a picture with them .

Besides the fact that it is an illegal activity since those people don’t have any authorization, there is more to it. Once you will have taken a picture with them, they will  insist on being paid up to 10€  and go as far as taking the  phone/camera off your hands and not return it until they will receive  a payment.

Such a scenario can happen as well when in Saint Mark: an illegal seller will offer to take a picture of you in front of the Basilica, and then ask for money to return your gear.

In case you couldn’t tell, we hate these behaviors!

Mind your belongings in crowded places. Pickpocketing is rare but it happens.

Even though it is a not a common problem, for good measure we suggest you pay attention to your belongings especially when in very (over)crowded places as on water buses, San Marco square, and the Rialto bridge. Thousands of people in a very small place create confusion and make an easy target for pickpockets .

In case you're tempted, do not buy from street vendors. You could get in big trouble.

illegal street vendors on a bridge trying to sell glasses and selfie sticks to passers-by. In the background the Salute church, the equestrian statue of Vittorio Emanuele di Savoia and the Doge palace.

Do absolutely not buy products from illegal vendors on the streets . Not only does it nourish the illegal market, but it can also lead you into big troubles: for example, if you buy counterfeit goods such as bags, glasses, etc you could be  fined for up to 7.000€.

Avoid taking or giving anything to people in the street. They will hussle you to pay for this rose, gadget or service you didn't want.

If it hasn’t already happened to you, it’s bound to happen, especially in an area such at St Mark’s square.

When strolling around Venice minding your own business, you will see people walking in your directions to then try to literally force into your hands the rose or gadget they are trying to sell.

Do not take it, not even for a moment, or they will chase you until you pay them for what they initially gave you “for free”.

Oh and never never step on the Infamous Green Step

A tourist in a canal after slipping on a slippery green step in Venice

What’s that?? Every local has seen dozen of visitors stepping on it and… flying straight into the canal !

All over the streets of the city, there are steps that were built to give access to the canals, providing an easy way to step on the boats.

Over the centuries, however, the levels of the seas have increased and the lowest steps are now covered by water for many hours per day, and therefore covered by green algae .

High and low tide alternate every 6 hours, leading those steps to be exposed  for some hours every day.

During those hours, many people are lured into stepping on them to take some beautiful pictures from an interesting angle, but the moment they place their foot on that slippery ground , they end falling straight into the canal.

The water is not cold, nor are there strong streams, but houses in Venice have been flushing their toilets for centuries straight into the canals, and some still do … we guess we need to tell you no further!

Now you know what to look out for when visiting Venice. To best plan your next visit, however, make sure to check out also the following resources to make the best out of your stay while making a positive impact on the local:

I'm visiting Venice. Why should I follow your recommendations?

The way you visit Venice has an impact both on the quality of your experience and on Venice itself.   Chilling, exploring , shopping , eating and drinking where the locals do, can make a huge impact both on the memories you bring home and on the local economy and community.

The Mannequins in This PG-Rated Horror Movie Will Traumatize You

You've never seen a slasher like this one.

The Big Picture

  • Tourist Trap is a unique and truly frightening horror film with telekinesis.
  • The director aimed to replicate The Texas Chain Saw Massacre , creating a distinctive horror style.
  • Despite a PG rating, Tourist Trap is scary without explicit content.

In the late 1970s, horror's slasher boom started thanks to big hits like Tobe Hooper 's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre in 1974 and John Carpenter 's Halloween in 1978. The fad really took off in the 80s with Friday the 13th and its infinite clones, but stuck in the middle was a little horror movie from 1979 called Tourist Trap . Starring The Rifleman 's Chuck Connors and Tanya Roberts from Charlie's Angels , Tourist Trap looks like just another slasher on the surface with yet another plot about a creepy guy in a mask killing young women . It only takes five minutes into the runtime, however, to discover that this slasher isn't one at all . Instead, it is a truly frightening horror film that includes telekinesis and the creepiest mannequins you'll ever discover. And it did it all with a PG rating.

Tourist Trap

A group of young friends stranded at a secluded roadside museum are stalked by a masked assailant who uses his telekinetic powers to control the attraction's mannequins.

'Tourist Trap's Director Was Looking to Make a Movie Similar to 'The Texas Chain Saw Massacre'

Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre changed horror when it was released in 1974. The genre was in an age of more religious themed films thanks to 1968's Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist in 1973, but Hooper's masterpiece, about a family of killer cannibals stalking young people, was gritty and disturbing, while also feeling like something that could really happen if you took a wrong turn in the middle of nowhere.

Tourist Trap was written and directed by David Schmoeller , who would later helm Puppet Master in 1989 . In 1979, however, he'd never made a feature film before working on Tourist Trap , which started off as a bit of a rip-off to a classic. In an interview with Daily Grindhouse , Schmoeller said:

"I had just graduated from film school and was looking for a way to break into Hollywood as a feature director. When I was in grad school at the University of Texas at Austin shooting my thesis film, Tobe Hooper was in Austin shooting The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. It was a low-budget hit that launched his career. I decided to do a horror film in the same vein."

One look at the film's poster and you can tell what Schmoeller started out going for, as his killer's mask looks very similar to the skin worn by Leatherface . Tourist Trap even starts out like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre , with a group of future young victims out in the middle of nowhere when their car breaks down. When one of them, of course, walks alone into a rundown roadside building, you know what's going to happen next. It's then though that everything in Tourist Trap turns sideways.

The Mannequin Scenes in 'Tourist Trap' Will Haunt Your Nightmares

The character of Woody ( Keith McDermott ) is a goner the moment he walks into the backroom of an abandoned gas station. All right, bring out the masked killer to hack him to death. Woody does indeed die, just minutes into Tourist Trap , which isn't messing around, but it's how he dies that throws you for a loop. Out of nowhere, the creepiest looking mannequins you'll ever see appear , their jaws moving, laughter escaping from their mouths. Once you've picked yourself up off the floor, where you nearly passed out from fright, you'll wonder how this is happening. And just how is that pipe floating in the air before launching itself unmanned into Woody's back?

Tourist Trap is disguised as a slasher, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre meets Halloween , but the real film is hidden under the gimmick. Tourist Trap is actually more akin to other horror classics like Psycho and Carrie , for our killer is not in the right frame of mind, and oh yeah, he's able to move things with his own mind. As Schmoeller told Daily Grindhouse:

"My thesis film, The Spider Will Kill You , was a Twilight Zone short about a blind man and mannequins. I thought the aspect of mannequins coming alive – and their ability to scare you (or creep you out, at least) – was a good ingredient. I used some of the basic structure of Chainsaw (van full of young victims) and the lone madman who appears to be okay ( Psycho )."

The killer has a fondness for mannequins , making a whole family out of them, which just so happen to be his very human victims underneath the plastic. He doesn't kill by stabbing or hacking anyone (the very definition of a slasher) but rather scaring his victims to death. Mannequins are already terrifying enough on their own, with their off-kilter human appearance being the same reason why we fear dolls . These aren't just ordinary mannequins though, but are controlled to move by the killer . Their eyes will follow you across the room, they will lift their arms and turn to you, and oh God, the sounds they make.

And it's all done with a shocking PG rating! There is a small amount of blood in Tourist Trap , but there are no curse words, no nudity, no sex, and no drugs . That doesn't mean that Tourist Trap is lacking anything at all. The absence of tropes is actually a positive, as it allows the film to go in its own direction and be its own monster, without being confined to the rules of what came before.

The ‘Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ Remake Is More Disturbing Than the Original, Fight Me

'tourist trap' shows that horror doesn't need to be rated r to be scary.

Tourist Trap might be rated PG, but it didn't aim to be . Schmoeller told Terror Trap , "That rating stunned us. And it killed the movie. No one goes to see a PG horror film." It really is shocking that Tourist Trap is rated PG, but this was an era before the creation of PG-13, which came about thanks to families complaining about the violence in PG movies Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Gremlins . There is nothing graphic or obscene enough to make Tourist Trap rated R, so PG it is.

Just as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre tricked the audience into thinking it was a gory film ( there's barely any blood at all ), Tourist Trap reels you in and makes you think that what you're watching shouldn't be seen. It's those damn mannequins and the killer that does it. The unusual approach is dizzying, as we're put in a realistic setting with real-feeling characters, but then dropped into the lair of someone whose powers have no limitations. If Tourist Trap has any weakness, it's the music , which is admittedly a bit silly and not very fitting of a horror movie. The film was produced by Irwin Yablans , the same man who helped create Halloween , which was in post-production at the same time. Schmoeller told Terror Trap that when Yablans heard the score, he hated it and wouldn't talk to him . Schmoeller said, "He thought Tourist Trap was going to be a big hit. He thought Halloween was just your average horror film. Then John Carpenter did this remarkably effective score and the film was transformed."

Sure, Tourist Trap could have used a better score, but it's a minor flaw. Halloween is a quieter movie with a killer who doesn't speak. Carpenter's music is almost the voice of Michael Myers, the same way the score for Jaws speaks for the shark . That's not needed for Tourist Trap . You'll be too busy freaking out over the terrifying screams of mannequins to hear anything else.

Tourist Trap is available to stream on Peacock in the U.S.

Tourist Trap

Digital video.

Own this DRM-free video to download and stream!

Capitalizing on the widely-publicized series of unsolved murders that occurred at the Liberace Museum in Las Vegas in the late 1970s*, Tourist Trap is a slasher film with all the classic elements.

It’s got a big beefy killer in overalls and a mask, portrayed by Chuck Connors, known primarily for his television role as The Rifleman but also for his 400 pound chin. And, of course, a couple of scantily clad babes, including replacement Charlie’s Angel Tanya Roberts, who would later make MILF history as the neighbor in That 70s Show .

For some reason the babes are on a road trip with a girl who’s sort of a more conservative version of Sarah, Plain and Tall when their car breaks down (you don’t say!) near a freaky roadside museum. It’s full of creepy mannequins that big Chuck operates via his never-explained telekinesis, proving that if people started developing X-Men style mutant powers in the real world their first impulse wouldn’t be to rule the world OR try to save it, but instead to perv out and build a giant whackin’ emporium full of RealDolls.

The girls, naturally, trust museum owner Chuck completely. They don’t realize he’s the killer picking them off one by one, a ruse that even Scooby and Shaggy would immediately see through, even with red-rimmed eyes after hotboxing the van. Throw in a twist ending so shocking it’ll leave you saying “huh, I guess that was the ending,” and you’ve got a Tourist Trap even more perplexing/disappointing than Santa Cruz’s famous Mystery Spot (where, incidentally, the Colby Jack cheese blend was first invented**).

Put on your Hawaiian shirt, fanny pack, and Teva sandals with socks, then join Mike, Kevin, and Bill in the Tourist Trap!

*not factual, this is just an urban legend we’re trying to get off the ground **this is another one

Flexes that late 70’s slasher formula that in a few short years would be perfected for mass consumption via numerous genre icons and directors, Tourist Trap is a strange little picture filled with tons of idiosyncrasies that make it such a special gem in my eyes, plus it also serves as time stamp of grim fandango 70’s horror movies that shaped the genre for every decade since.

First off, the Texas Chain Saw Massacre rip-off is one of my favorite subgebres and while there’s a bit of that here (some might say every movie rips off TCM and my love for that monolith would find it hard for me to disagree with that statement) there’s even more in the production…

The first movie of The Last Drive-In was the last one I watched because Shudder was having a moment when the stream first started and I couldn’t get it to load. Thankfully, they have added all of the movies with the JBB commentary to the service so we can all enjoy them at any time and that is why they are my favorite streaming service. Also they are a horror service so that’s got a lot to do with me thing they’re the best and I’m sure nobody is surprised there.

This movie is so damn weird and surreal so of course I love it. After watching a million times, the overall impact lessens a bit, but damn there are…

🔪 Broken down car full of 20-something kids 🔪 Gorgeous locales, ripe for skinny-dipping 🔪 Supernatural mannequins 🔪 Maniacal laughing 🔪 Spine tingling soundtrack full of tense strings

Tourist Trap is a great example of an innocent late 70s slasher that's not pretending to be something it's not. While not technically perfect, it is terrific fun with some freakishly fatal moments.

"You're so pretty. It's a shame you have to die."

Weird, surreal, slightly bonkers and heaps of fun, the film is brought alive by Chuck Connors who puts in a fantastic performance as local fearmonger Mr. Slausen.

I’m going on record saying this is the creepiest movie ever made that was rated ‘PG.’

Essentially a mashup of ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ and Herbie Hancock’s ‘Rockit’ music video.

If you’re a horror fan and you’ve never seen ‘Tourist Trap,’ you need to rectify that shit immediately!

This may lack the filthy, visceral power of something like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre , but this off-road wax museum mood-piece is quite creepy and unsettling. All of the doll/mask imagery and sound work pushes the PG rating to its limits, and Chuck Conners' performance as Mr. Slausen is fucking great.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

20something teenagers do battle with a telekinetic hick in the Hollywood Hills, having ill-advisedly rocked up at a forgotten tourist spot, Slausen's Lost Oasis. This was a lot weirder than I was expecting. It feels like it should be campier but there's a actually a real mean streak running through it. Mannequins are creepy af at the best of times, let alone when they're shrouded in deep shadow and have a tendency to become animated when you least expect it.

Obvious reference points are Carrie - with the stalker's psychic powers - and Texas Chainsaw Massacre , both for the backwoods setting and the masked antagonist's hulking appearance. The root of all evil though, is Hitchcock, and Psycho in particular. The…

To be honest, I confess that even though I consider myself a big fan of the Slasher genre and watch a lot of these movies since I was a kid I had never seen Tourist Trap in my life (does this make me not deserve to be a fan of this archetype?), yes, I already knew about it before, I have read reviews about it for a long time in other sites and I have even spoiled myself in something of what happens in it. Now that I've seen it I think it needed a review from me written here in Letterboxd to redeem myself.

Tourist Trap

Tourist Trap

  • A group of young friends stranded at a secluded roadside museum are stalked by a masked assailant who uses his telekinetic powers to control the attraction's mannequins.
  • Teenagers come across a shut-in psychopath with telekinetic powers. He proceeds to use these powers to slay them one by one as well as animate the various mannequins he uses to keep himself company. — Dan Coker <[email protected]>
  • Four people go in search of their missing friend. What they find is Slausen's Lost Oasis, and mannequin dressed museum and a seemingly abadoned mansion owned by gentle old Mr. Slausen. He agrees to help with thei car trouble, but some of the girls decide to look for a working phone inside the house even though Mr. Slausen warned them not too. Hidden within the home is Mr. Slausen's misunderstood mask hidden younger brother. What they learn is that the mannaquins seem very much alive, or is there something much more terrifying behind the mask? — Wallace Entertainment
  • Eileen (Robin Sherwood) and her boyfriend Woody (Keith McDermott) are driving through the desert. When their car gets a flat tire, Woody goes to find a gas station. Their friends Becky (Tanya Roberts), Jerry (Jon Van Ness) and Molly (Jocelyn Jones) are traveling separately in a different vehicle. They reach Eileen waiting at the car and they all drive off to collect Woody. Woody has found a gas station but it appears deserted. He enters the back room but becomes trapped when the door closes by itself behind him. Various mannequins appear in the room, and multiple objects fly at him until a metal pipe impales and kills him. A little later, Eileen, Becky, Molly and Jerry happen upon a run-down ghost town called 'Slausen's Lost Oasis' (the tourist trap in the title) and conclude Woody is there. As they drive in, their vehicle mysteriously breaks down. Jerry tries to fix his jeep and the girls go skinny dipping in a nearby oasis. As the three women swim, a strange-looking middle-aged man, who introduces himself as Mr. Slausen (Chuck Connors) appears holding a shotgun. Though outwardly polite, he also seems embittered by the decline of his tourist trap since the local expressway was moved away. The three nude girls feel awkward in the water as he casually chats with them, and they apologize for trespassing on his property. Slausen offers to help Jerry with the jeep, but insists the group go to his house with him to get his tools. There, they see the tourist trap: animated wax works type figures including armed bandits. Eileen is curious about a nearby house, but Slausen insists the women stay inside the museum. Slausen takes Jerry to fix the jeep leaving the women. Eileen leaves to find a phone in the other house. There she finds several mannequins inside the house. Someone calls her name, and a stranger wearing a grotesque mask suddenly appears behind her. Various items in the room move of their own accord and the scarf Eileen is wearing tightens and strangles her to death. Slausen returns to Molly and Becky saying that Jerry drove his truck into town. When told that Eileen left, he goes to the house and finds Eileen has been turned into a mannequin. He returns and tells Molly and Becky he did not find Eileen and will leave again to continue the search. Frustrated, the women also later leave to search for her. Becky enters the nearby house and finds a mannequin resembling Eileen. Becky is attacked by the masked killer and then by multiple mannequins. She later wakes up tied up in the basement along with Jerry. Jerry says the killer is Slausen's brother. Also held captive is a young woman named Tina (Dawn Jeffory), who is strapped to a table. She is killed when the masked man covers her face with plaster, causing her to suffocate. Jerry frees himself and attacks the killer, but is soon overpowered. Tied back up, Jerry tries to reach for a key but the killer telepathically moves it from his reach... revealing that the killer has the power of telekinesis. Molly, still outside searching for the others, is pursued by the masked man. She meets Slausen who drives her to the museum and gives her a gun while he goes inside. The masked man appears and Molly shoots, but the gun is loaded with blanks. The man removes the mask: it is Slausen. She panics and tries to elude Slausen but is soon captured and restrained to a bed. Meanwhile, Becky and Jerry escape from the basement but, get separated. Slausen appears and takes Becky to the museum. There the Old West figures begin shooting at her, and she is killed by a Indian Chief figure who throws a knife at her, stabbing her in the back of the neck. Back at the house, Molly manages to untie herself and attempts to look for a way out. She is forced to hide when Slausen appears again and, using his telekinesis, makes many of the mannequins move by themselves. He finds Molly hiding and invites him to dance with him. Jerry arrives to rescue Molly, but he is revealed to have unknowingly been turned into a mannequin as Slausen reveals it by "removing" his arm. Slausen dances with the mannequin figure of his wife, and Molly sees that the wife has become animated as a real person. Traumatized by all of this, Molly finds a hatchet where she sneaks up behind Slausen, and slams the axe into his shoulder as he turns around. With Slausen finally dead and his power gone, all of the mannequins in the room stop moving. The film then ends where it takes place the next morning, and a grinning and clearly insane Molly is seen driving away in the jeep with the mannequin versions of her friends.
