Tour Homes & More!
The benefield house • 1009 s. line street.
The Benefield House is a true gem of history and hospitality. The J. H. Benefield, Sr. home was known as the "Gay 90's" house because of the many social affairs that were held in the drawing room when Jefferson was a leading port in Texas. It is a Queen Anne Victorian style house, with fine architectural details, as is typical of the spacious old homes built around the turn of the 20th century.
La Masure • 506 S. Friou Street
Originally built in 1919, this example of Southern Creole architecture has recently undergone a complete renovation, creating a unique residence in the heart of Historic Jefferson. Retaining its original character, the home features hand-thrown terracotta tile floors, shiplap walls, exposed rafter ceilings tall glass French doors and windows, and a length-of-the-house second-floor balcony. The property's current owner and restorer is Ben Mauldin.
The Tarry House • 419 Polk Street
A touch of grace • 302 s. friou street.
The Tarry House is an American Craftsman style home which emerged between 1900 and 1929. These homes were a backlash against the Industrial Revolutions mass-produced Victorian architecture, which prized ornamental decoration as opposed to the Craftsman's natural and simplistic form. The Craftsman homes were very popular in California and the Midwest, however, the Tarry Home, built in 1919 by Radford Tarry, is purported to be the oldest brick Craftsman in East Texas.
Enchanted Forest • 502 E. Jefferson Street
A Touch Of Grace is a traditional Ranch style home built in 1970. Along with the beautiful landscaping, a front porch, back screened in porch, and a family/craft room were added taking the home from a Ranch to a charming cottage both inside and out. The homeowners, Bill and Grace Daddario, moved to Jefferson in April 2022.

Take a look inside one of the houses on the Jefferson, Texas Candlelight Tour of Homes
Jim and Joanne Stacey were looking to retire to a small town after spending years in Houston, Texas. In May of 2017, that search ended when the couple visited the Jefferson Historical Pilgrimage Home Tour in Jefferson, Texas.
The town was perfect but the homes available were not, they were either too big or too small. Joanne drew out a plan based on her love of Revival-style homes, then hired an architect and a builder to create what is now called Oak Leif Manor.
This Christmas will be the Stacey's second in the house, and this year they are sharing it with others by being part of the Candlelight Tour Of Homes.
They are one of the four homes on the tour that has decked the halls for visitors to soak in all the Christmas spirit.
"The whole idea is for the decorations, not the house or the antiques, it to see how they decorate the home (for Christmas)," said Mary Nash, member of the Historic Jefferson Foundation that organizes the Candlelight Tour of Homes.
For the Stacey's that means sharing the extensive Santa collection they have acquired through the years. There is the Santa who loves wine, large Santa's in the hall and there are Santas that depict the counties they have traveled to.
In the dining room, the Twelve Days of Christmas serves as inspiration for a delightful display. A large swan becomes the centerpiece on the table as golden pears dangle above. The bedroom across the hall is the angel room, another favorite among the visitors.
"This is a nice way to give back to the community that we have fallen in love with," Joanne said.
The event began last weekend and Saturday, Dec. 11. Tickets can be ordered online or at the candlelight headquarters located in the Murphy Building at 116 W. Austin Street.

Candlelight Tour of Homes, Jefferson Texas bed and breakfast
The Christmas Candlelight tour of homes is presented by the Historic Jefferson Foundation. This year marks the 29th annual event with a spectacularly diverse list of homes on the tour. Since I could not begin to completely define the tour of homes I’ll let this excerpt from the Foundations website do it for me. “For the last 28 years the gracious residents of Jefferson Texas have sacrificed their time by agreeing to let their homes be included in the Historic Jefferson Foundations Annual Candlelight Tour of Homes. Some have even agreed to include their home more than once. You have seen some of the finest Victorian, Antebellum, Colonial, and even some newer homes grace the tours of past.” The homes on the tour this year are no exception. These houses were built in years of 1865 to 1945. They include the Woods-Moore home, the Hileman-Turner home, the Elevator Townhouse and the Culberson House bed and breakfast. Each home is decorated with items that represents the past such as all natural decorations inside and out. Tour dates are: Thursdays, Dec. 1 & 8, 2011 from 3 to 7 p.m. Fri. & Sat., Dec. 2 & 3, 2011 from 5 to 9 p.m. Fri. & Sat., Dec. 9 & 10, 2011 from 5to 9 p.m. While this weekend is considered by most to be part of a holiday weekend some of the bed and breakfasts in Jefferson will let folks book rooms for Thursday nights as a single night so if you want to come for the earlier home tours you may. Buy your tickets before Nov. 21, 2011 for a discount.

Candlelight Tour of Homes
Candlelight tour of homes® nov 30,dec. 1 & 2 and dec. 7, 8, 9, 2017.
Experience the warmth of an old-fashioned Christmas during the 35th annual Candlelight Tour of Homes during the first two weekends in December —Nov 30, Dec. 1 & 2 and Dec.7, 8,9, 2017 — in charming historic Jefferson, Texas. View lavish Victorian homes in the soft glow of candlelight. The fragrance of fresh fir trees, each glittering with tinsel, ribbon, and sparkling glass balls, wafts through rooms filled with sumptuous holiday decorations. Women in lovely hooped gowns and gentlemen in top hats and tails describe each home’s origins and finery.
The Governor’s House - 321 N. Walnut Street
This home was built in 1868 as a wedding gift to Charles A. Culberson, a gift from his Father, who lived in the house next door. Culberson later became a U. S. Senator and Governor of Texas. The family of Jesse M. DeWare, Jr., squared the L-Shaped home, bringing the detached kitchen and dining room into the north side, and maintained it through two generations. The home served as a popular B&B during the late 1900’s, and was extensively, re-leveled, renovated, re-plumbed, and rewired, mostly by the Golden’s, who also gave it the present name. With twelve foot ceilings, heart pine floors, and a beautifully remodeled kitchen, you will truly be stepping back in time. The current owners, retired artists Howard and Linda Blatch, have been living in, and restoring Historic Homes for forty six years. The family’s collection of antiques and flint glassware
The George T. Todd House - 505 N. Polk Street
George Thomas Todd’s family home was built on Polk Street in 1893. Materials used were native cypress and pine. The house is Queen Anne Victorian with a corner tower and a mansard roof. The kitchen was separated from the main house by an open stairwell. The house was originally fitted for gas lighting; electricity was added when it became available in Jefferson. It became a Recorded Texas Landmark in 1974. George T. Todd died at the Polk Street house in 1913. His story which ended in Jefferson began 74 years before when he was born in Caroline County Virginia in 1839. George’s seven children called the Polk Street house their home. He lived to see ten of his eighteen grandchildren born. Evelyn’s daughter, Julianne, the great granddaughter of George T. and Marion Todd lives in the Polk Street house now with her family.
Kennedy Manor - 217 W Layfette Street
Kennedy Manor was originally built by Adin Powell in 1860 as a single-story Greek Revival cottage. With its two porches covering the entrances facing Market and Lafayette Streets, the house much resembled the Beard House around the corner on Vale Street. In 1907, George and Fannie Dougherty bought the house and extensively renovated it into its current Neo-classical Style which included the addition of the second story to provide rooms for a boarding house operation until 1925, when the Dougherty’s daughter converted it to apartments. When she died in 1962, she left the house to Mrs. Jessie Kennedy who had been a resident and companion since 1928. In 1989, the home was restored to its current Victorian splendor. The spacious home has 14 foot high decorative ceilings, restored woodwork, original cypress wood floors and antique stained glass windows. Owners, Tommy and Tracey Engle.
Jefferson Playhouse and Ruth Lester Memorial - 209 W. Henderson Street
This is the home of The Diamond Bessie Murder Trial presented each year during the historic Pilgrimage. It was originally constructed in 1860 as a home for Robert W. Nesmith, a stage line contractor. It was sold in 1869 to the Sisters of Charity for use as a convent and school and for a short time, as a hospital. In 1875, it was sold to the town’s Jewish congregation for $2000. The adjoining structure was built for use as a synagogue, now called the Jefferson Playhouse. The original building was used as a home for the rabbi. As Jefferson’s economy declined, many of the Jewish families moved away. Their congregation declined to a point they were unable to support a full-time rabbi. The building was sold to the Jessie Allen Wise Garden Club in 1963 and has been lovingly cared for by its members since it was acquired by the club.

Dallas’ Top Architectural Home Tour Returns This Fall
An exclusive preview of the 2024 aia dallas tour of homes.
N early every neighborhood in Dallas hosts a stellar home tour. Whether they focus on historic preservation within the Park Cities , lead candlelit wine tours of Hollywood Heights, or unveil the modernist, mid-century gems surrounding White Rock Lake, the annual events highlight the design styles that make each neighborhood distinct. But only one allows guests to explore notable architecture across every coveted neighborhood: the AIA Dallas Tour of Homes.
With tickets ($50 to $125) now available for the 2024 AIA Dallas Tour of Homes , we’re offering an exclusive look at the nine striking dwellings, chosen from countless submissions by the Tour of Homes committee, that will open their doors on Saturday, October 26, and Sunday, October 27.
The Santa Clara Residence in Forest Hills | A.GRUPPO Architecture, FAIA
The 1940s home in Dallas’ impressively arbored Forest Hills neighborhood has seen several additions over the years, but the quality wasn’t quite there. The latest renovation took the home back to basics, saving the original two-story home and incorporating it into an updated design. The new spaces are thoroughly modern, but feature well-crafted nods to its 1940s heart.
The Monterey House | Lloyd Lumpkins, AIA
This resort-like property shows what’s possible when you add an award-winning architect ’s touch to a basic developer-built home from the early 2000s. Known for his French and Spanish Renaissance designs in Dallas’ most prestigious neighborhoods, Lloyd Lumpkins, AIA transformed the standard home into a resort-like residence inspired by the owner’s travels to Mexico. Large-scale artworks (including a massive mosaic), a dance studio, and an in-house bar cater to the homeowner’s interests.
The Clover Home in Midway Hollow | Studio Park Architecture
The clean-lined Cape Dutch architecture of Florida’s Alys Beach served as inspiration for this Midway Hollow home ’s stunning stucco facade. The modern, Bermuda vibes continue throughout the 5,200-square-foot dwelling, with a calming color palette, soaring ceilings, and charming archways.
Wonjin Park, AIA designed this residence in collaboration with Phuong Vu, AIA with M&E Development. Originally from South Korea, the architect has worked under architects such as I.M. Pei in New York and Chad Dorsey in Dallas. One of his recent commercial works was the New York City Ballet rehearsal room.
The Yosemite House in Lakewood | Laura Juarez Baggett Studio, AIA
With a limited budget and aging-in-place in mind, Laura Juarez Baggett, AIA got creative with this Lakewood new build, which backs up to a small private lake. There’s a bird-watching platform, low-riser stairs with intermediate landings, and materials salvaged from previous homes. It feels like a modern treehouse, but all the daily-use spaces are on the main floor.
Purdue House in University Park | A. Micheal Architecture
The Dallas-based architecture firm, founded by Andrew Stiglmeier, AIA, in 2020, stays intentionally small so they can keep the design process as collaborative and personable as possible. The A. Micheal Architecture team recently completed the Ranch Houses for the new Omni PGA Frisco .
For this project, a recent Chicago transplant had combined two small Park Cities’ lots to build a 6,000-square-foot home. The result is a modern glass house that utilized traditional materials to blend into its University Park surroundings. Built for entertaining, the home includes a large back patio and a two-story courtyard for gatherings. Unique additions include a golf simulation room and a striking open stringer steel stair.
The Lively Home | SHM Architects
This home was a true collaboration between SHM Architects , interior designers Catherine Albritton & Daphne Kuykendall, LRO Residential, and the landscape architects at Ten55 Design. Built for a pair of empty nesters, the single-story home feels more like a modern art gallery, with a flood of natural light and a seamless indoor/outdoor connection to its forest-like lot.
The Stonebridge Home on the Katy Trail | Lionel Morrison, FAIA
Turtle Creek, while one of Dallas’ most beautiful neighborhoods, can also be one of the most challenging areas for builders thanks to its unique topography. Lionel Morrison , AIA, whose impressive collection of modern works in Dallas includes one of the coolest homes in Highland Park and One Arts Plaza, was up for the task.
A formal garden, pool, and spa separate the property from the street, while both the guest house and the main home (made with custom-cut limestone brick with smooth, hand-troweled stucco) run parallel to the Katy Trail.
The Yamini Home in Jan Mar | AMDG Studio
Sustaining damage from the 2020 tornado, this minimalist, mid-century modern gem was remodeled and expanded by architect Paul Vetter, AIA to include a more open floor plan, natural light, and new living spaces. The floors, fireplace, and finishes are either original or designed to blend as seamlessly as the large patio that wraps around the back of the home.
The Blackland Residences | Studio LEMA
A collaboration between Studio LEMA and builder Ripple D+B , this series of homes in the back corner of the architect-driven Urban Commons neighborhood , the Blackland homes embrace their raw interior construction, offering a thoughtfully insulated blank canvas to a future homeowner.
