Situated just a short, 76-mile drive from Memphis, Clarksdale is known as one of the birthplaces of blues music, and it has all the attractions to match. Beyond live music venues, you’ll find the Delta Blues Museum and the Crossroads Cultural Arts Center .

6. Nashville, Tennessee

Hop between two Tennessee urban hubs. Yes, it might take you a little over three hours to get there, but once you’ve visited Nashville, you’re sure to fall in love with this southern city. The live music scene is not to be missed, but the food scene is also memorable, as is the indie shopping.

Make sure you add time to your itinerary to check out all the great museums in Nashville, such as the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum , the Johnny Cash Museum , the Frist Art Museum and the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum — and that just scratches the surface of Nashville’s robust arts and culture attractions.

7. Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge, Tennessee

Sticking in Tennessee, for an outdoorsy getaway under an hour’s drive time, try the Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge . The refuge was created to protect migrating birds in the 1960s and sits along the Hatchie River. With nearly 12,000 acres of space, it’s not only home to a wide array of water fowl, but also all sorts of native, Tennessee wildlife such as deer, small mammals, reptiles and amphibians.

If you want to visit the refuge, you’ll find an array of activities, including hiking, fishing, boating and even driving and boat tours. There are scenic hiking trails for an array of skill levels, though most trails are very easy, from a mere 0.09-miles long to more than two miles at longest.

8. Hardy, Arkansas

Another Arkansas destination, Hardy is a small town that offers up an array of outdoor activities, with a few towny amenities thrown in for good measure. You can do a little local shopping and dining, but then spend the most of your weekend trip soaking up the sun.

Visit Lake Sequoyah or Lake Cherokee, get in some zip lining and camp at one of the local camp grounds. Make sure to check the town’s calendar before your visit, to see if you can maybe catch one of the annual festivals, fairs or concerts. If you don’t fancy camping, you’ll find several local bed and breakfasts in town.

9. St. Louis, Missouri

If you’d rather go to a big city after your stay in Memphis, and you don’t mind a little extra driving time, then there’s nowhere else to go than the Gateway to the West, aka St. Louis, Missouri. You’ll find near-endless ways to have fun here, no matter what you’re into or who you’re traveling with.

Luxury travelers, budget travelers, family travelers, history buffs, foodies, outdoor adventurers — there’s seriously something for everyone (even free things to do for the budget conscience). Of course, the top thing to add to your itinerary is seeing the Gateway Arch , but, otherwise, you can find live sports, breweries, barbecue, zoos, lots of museums and more to keep you entertained.

10. Oxford, Mississippi

Situated almost directly south of Memphis, and a little over an hour away, Oxford, Mississippi, is the cultural hub of the South. The small town, charming and unassuming, has attracted a variety of artists and, more particularly, writers, over the years.

The town is home to the University of Mississippi, also known as Ole Miss. If you visit during the fall, you’ll have a unique opportunity to check out the South’s obsession with SEC football, but, otherwise, you can check out lots of artsy attractions, such as the many galleries and William Faulkner’s historic home .

11. Tupelo, Mississippi

For another music-centric destination to visit after Memphis, try Tupelo. The birthplace of Elvis Presley, the city offers, of course, the King’s historic home and museum . However, that’s not where the history stops.

Tupelo is also a point of interest on the Natchez Trace Parkway (which is a separate road trip all on its own that should definitely be considered once you have more than just a weekend, as it’s more than 400 miles). It’s additionally home to historic sites such as the Tupelo Veterans Museum , Tupelo National Battlefield and Oren Dunn City Museum .

12. Little Rock, Arkansas

Little Rock, Arkansas, the state’s capital, is small for a state capital, but still offers lots to explore, both indoors and out. There’s Pinnacle Mountain State Park , for easily accessible views. For some presidential history, there’s the William J. Clinton Presidential Library .

The River Market District offers local shopping. For biking on the waterfront, head to the Arkansas River Trail . Fashion fans can visit the Esse Purse Museum , while families will want to visit the oldest museum in Arkansas, the Museum of Discovery .

Each represents one of the state’s grand divisions: West, Middle, and East. Beginning in the west, the state borders the Mississippi River . The land that stretches inland from Memphis is part of the Gulf Coastal Plain. It includes flat stretches of fertile soil that gradually evolve into low rolling hills and wide stream valleys. Crossing over the Tennessee River, Middle Tennessee brings the Highland Rim and Nashville Basin, with level plains, undulating hills, and fertile farmland, before shifting into the Cumberland Plateau—characterized by flat-topped tablelands, crooked stream valleys, rocky cliffs, and plentiful waterfalls. No matter how much we love living in Memphis, we can all use a bit of road therapy from time to time. Fill up the gas tank, roll down the windows, and feel the wind in your hair for a few hours and see how great you feel. All of that fun stuff going on in Memphis will still be here when you get back. These the best day trips in the tri-state area -- all within a three-hour drive.

Best Woodsy Getaway: Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park

Distance from Memphis : 17 miles, 25-minute drive

Meeman-Shelby Forest is the closest and cheapest place to escape city life completely. The hilly Woodland Trail, near the visitors center, has three interlocking loops so you can run, walk, or hike 1, 3, or 4 miles (or any multiple thereof if you’re feeling extra CrossFit). Seasonal summer rangers lead nature hikes, pontoon boat rides on Poplar Tree Lake, and occasional canoe trips in the cypress swamps. The Shelby Forest General Store is a great place to load up on snacks or get a juicy burger. Stop by on Friday nights for steak and live bluegrass. There’s also an olympic-sized pool that almost no one knows about. Do with that information what you will.

Best Curated Getaway: Wilson, AR

Distance from Memphis : 45 miles from downtown, 46-minute drive

Wilson, population 900, is owned by Gaylon Lawrence Jr., managed by John Faulkner, and branded by Memphis ad agency Loaded for Bear. All this is to say, they’ve thought of everything. Get a cup of coffee at the Welcome Center. Stop in for a blue plate lunch or upscale dinner at the delicious Wilson Cafe. Do some shopping at the Wilson Pharmacy or White’s Mercantile -- a modern mercantile store opened by Hank Williams Jr.’s daughter. Visit the Hampson Archaeological Museum. Stop by the Grange for a special event or a look at the gardens.

Best Camping Getaway: Village Creek State Park

Distance from Memphis : 50 miles, one-hour drive

Arkansas' second-largest state park is right over the Mississippi Bridge on Crowley’s Ridge. The rolling hills and hardwood forest are great for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. There are lakes for fishing and boating. There’s even a hardcore 27-hole, Andy Dye signature golf course. There are beautiful views, a swinging bridge, and the longest preserved section of the Trail of Tears. Three-bedroom cabins are available for $95-$140 per night.

Best Hill Country Getaway: Holly Springs, MS

You can get a taste of history, home cooking, and hill country music all in one short drive. Park your car and take a walking tour of Holly Springs’ antebellum homes, then grab a steaming-hot burger over at Phillips Grocery. There are several museums to choose from too -- The Kate Freeman Clark Museum, Marshall County Historical Museum, and the Ida B. Wells-Barnett Museum. Don’t forget the Hillcrest Cemetery and save room for a meat & three at Annie's Restaurant.

Best Beef-centric Getaway: Como, MS

Distance from Memphis : 47 miles, 47-minute drive

Como is for meat lovers. Take a tour of Home Place Pastures where they humanely raise cows and pigs, hold fancy dinners, casual oyster roasts, and live music. Take a cooler to fill at the farm store, then head into town for a burger and billiard’s at June’s place, better known as Como Billiards. The Como Steakhouse is also a guaranteed good time and a great place to fill your belly. Lovers of architecture can do a self guided tour of Andrew Johnson buildings .

Best Beer Connoisseurs Getaway: Little Rock, AR

Distance from Memphis : 136 miles, two-hour drive

“ Locally Labeled ” is a self-guided tour of 10 local breweries and distilleries (Rock Town Distillery, BoBrook Farms, An Enchanting Evening Winery, Stone’s Throw, Lost Forty Brewing, Blue Canoe, Damgoode Pies, Diamond Bear, and Vino's). Though, obviously if you visit them all, it might cease to be a day trip. (If you have to choose one, start at Lost Forty!) Little Rock is also a great place to have lunch/dinner/any meal of the day -- Cheese dip trail, anyone? -- and get some shopping done. And let’s not forget the great hiking on Pinnacle Mountain or a cone of Loblolly ice cream that you can eat down the street at the Bernice Garden (sculpture garden). Or spend a few hours at The Dust Bowl -- an old school eight lane bowling alley.

Best Paddling Getaway: LaGrange

Distance from Memphis : 55 miles, one-hour drive

Floating through a cypress forest should be on everyone’s bucket list. The Ghost River section of the Wolf is breathtaking. LaGrange, Tennessee is the put-in, and the takeout is just east of Moscow, at Bateman Bridge. It's about 14 miles on the river and can take anywhere from three to five hours to paddle, depending on the water level. There are two canoe and kayak outfitters, Wolf River Canoe and Ghost River Rentals, which can help with gear and the particulars. Above Moscow, the river is super-clean, spring-fed water, so you can and should take swim breaks. Bring lots of water, snacks, sunscreen, and a hat.

Best Literary Minded Getaway: Oxford, MS

Distance from Memphis : 75 miles, 90-minute drive

This college town has a lot more to offer than just football games. There are several top-notch restaurants to try, most of which are owned by John Currence -- City Grocery, Big Bad Breakfast, Bouré, and Snackbar. Saint Leo is a must for pizza and pasta lovers. And it would be silly to leave without having a meal at the Ajax Diner. The End of All Music is a great record store and Square Books is a book lover’s paradise -- both are on the square. Once you get your literary juices flowing, pop over to Rowan Oak, home to William Faulkner and his family for more than 40 years. There’s no fee to visit the grounds, but there is a $5 cost for house admission. Pro tip: Thacker Mountain Radio is Oxford’s version of A Prairie Home Companion . They have a fantastic house band that plays with visiting musicians, and there are always authors hanging around as well. It’s recorded live every Thursday night at Off Square Books.

“Best Memphis” Getaway: West Memphis, AR

Distance from Memphis : 9 miles from downtown, 16-minute drive

Those in the know call it Best Memphis for a reason. Sure, they have gambling and medicinal marijuana, but they also have the original Pancho’s for margs and cheese dip, the bar at the Veterans of Foreign Wars building for a cheap Bud Light, CJ’s Blues Club for late night dancing, and lots of long, country roads to take your mind off of city life. For a more wholesome visit, try Big John’s Shake Shack, the Sultana Museum, and a stroll through Mound City.

Best Delta Blues Getaway: Clarksdale, MS

Steeped in Delta flavor, this North Mississippi town is the home of the mythical Blues Crossroads -- as in where one might sell their soul to the Devil. You may meet more international music fans on the pilgrimage from Chicago to New Orleans, than American tourists. Have a meal at the Hooker Grocery or a burger at Kenoy’s. Pop in to Cat Head Delta Blues & Folk Art for books and records. The Shack Up Inn, built on the former Hopson Plantation, is a great place to spend the night should you decide to stay up late at Red's Lounge (one of the last legit juke joints in the world). Check the schedule as the town hosts a plethora of festivals.

Best Safari Getaway: Alamo, TN

Distance from Memphis : 80 miles, 90-minute drive

Get up close and personal with a variety of animals, some of which you may not have known existed. The Tennessee Safari Park is open year-round, seven days a week. You purchase buckets of food at the gate, receive minimal instruction on protecting your thumbs, and then you are free to drive through and feed the animals. Hungry ostriches wait for you at the gate so they can follow you through the entire park, stick their heads in your car, and do everything in their power to eat all of your food. It’s both hilarious and a little scary. It takes about an hour to go through the park, and there is also a petting zoo, snack bar, picnic area, and restrooms.

Best Daredevil Getaway: Heber Springs, AR

Distance from Memphis : 150 miles, just under a three-hour drive

Everyone needs to cliff jump at the Dam Site Recreation Area. There is a swimming area and a sandy beach for babies, young kids, and anyone not into cliff jumping. The cliffs vary in height from 3 to 30 feet. There are some that are perfect for young kids and really high ones for daredevils. There are picnic tables in some areas that have trees for shade. Bring a pop-up tent, sunscreen, towels, water shoes/sandals, a hat, and a rolling cooler with lots of hydrating liquids and food.

Best Outdoorsy Getaway: Hardy, AR

Distance from Memphis : 130 miles, two-hour drive

Hardy is the perfect place to enjoy the Ozark Mountains, the Spring River, and small-town charm. The Shops of Old Town Hardy are all housed in buildings built in the 1890s, including a goth shop for your inner angsty teenager. Main Street eateries to try: Leaves & Beans, Crosseyed Catfish, and Vanilla Cowgirl. Spring River Eatery serves Southern comfort food and healthy fare and features live music Thursday-Saturday, some Sundays (folk, country, and blues musicians from around the country, as well as local talent). Summer Music on the Street, a free event, is held every Saturday in Dr. Thompson Park on Main Street from noon-2pm, sometimes longer. Buford Beach has a boat launch, playground, picnic tables, a ball field, a swim area, floating, tubing, and fishing off-bank, all free. 3 Rivers Outfitters offers float trips from two to eight hours and kayak & canoe rentals. Griffin Park has horseback riding, fishing & swimming.

Looking for the best weekend getaway trips from Memphis, Tennessee? I’m rounding up ten of our family’s favorites and why you should add them to your 2024 travel plans!

Ya’ll know I love my hometown of Memphis, Tennessee, but I also love a good road trip. And when it’s only 6 or so hours away, it’s perfect for a little weekend trip! With the holidays behind us, it’s the perfect time to start the year off right and take a fun little weekend getaway trip. Whether it’s a couple trip or a family friendly trip, there are tons of great ones nearby!

One of the great things about Memphis is that we are centrally located to SO many great places that are round around 6 hours. Just that short little weekend getaway is great too if you’ve got the travel bug and just have to get away! And there are so many great things to see and do! Today I’m sharing my top 10 favorite locations for a short weekend getaway trip from Memphis.

Top 10 Weekend Getaway Trips from Memphis, TN

1.) st. louis, missouri.

From the St. Louis Zoo to the Gateway Arch and so much more like museums and loads of parks, St. Louis is an awesome place for a family weekend getaway. It’s a really pretty drive from Memphis as well, a total bonus! There are so many rocks and rolling hills; it’s just beautiful! We’ve been going there yearly since I was a kid. It’s such a great, quick trip that has so much to do for the entire family!

2.) Branson, Missouri

Branson is a place we frequently visit and for good reason. We LOVE Branson. This is where we had our wedding , and a place we visit every year. There is so much to see and do in Branson from amusement parks like Silver Dollar City to shows to hiking. And a bonus is how family friendly the entire area is! Our favorite place to stay is Big Cedar Lodge . It’s perfect for a couples trip or a family getaway.

3.) Nashville, Tennessee

Nashville has long been a favorite place of mine, and now we love to take the kids too. And it is such a blast for them! We typically stay at Gaylord Opryland , and in the winter they have gingerbread decorating, carriage rides, ice tubing, bumper cars, ice skating and more! And year-round they have the indoor water attraction, flatboat rides and scavenger hunts. And during summer, they have the outdoor water attraction. They literally have everything here from tons of great dining, ice cream shops, gift shops and more. It is so family friendly too! And if you stay in the downtown area, it is perfect for a couples or girls trip!

4.) The Smoky Mountains in Gatlinburg, Sevierville and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

We’ve been to the Gatlinburg area since I was a kid, since it’s just on the other side of the state. And now we go every single year and take the kids! This year we went 3 times, and we already have another trip planned back for next year! If you don’t know, Gatlinburg sits just at the foothills of the Smoky Mountains and is absolutely GORGEOUS. There’s lots of fun, outdoorsy things to do and we just love it when we are here! There are plenty of great shows, coasters, rafting, amusement parks like Dollywood and Anakeesta , swimming and hiking to be done here. And it’s super family friendly as well!

5.) Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta is such a great, short little trip. They have so much there to do like Legoland, and it’s just a short drive from where my brother lives. Nearby there is a great zoo, Six Flags, tons of great restaurants, shopping and nice hotels. There are also plenty of great suburbs nearby too you will want to visit. It’s great for a couples trip or a family trip! And nearby, there is tons of great hiking and cabins you can stay in too.

6.) New Orleans, Louisiana

We have always loved a good weekend getaway to NOLA. If y’all haven’t been, it’s honestly a gorgeous place to visit no matter what time of year it is. New Orleans has so much to offer. Amazing restaurants, super interesting history (which includes tons of tours to learn more about that history) and always something happening, you really can’t go wrong here! Our favorite hotel to stay at when we are here is The Royal Sonesta . We haven’t taken the kids yet, but it’s on our list to do very soon now that Grayson is a little older.

7.) Birmingham, Alabama

Only a few hours drive from Memphis, Birmingham is a favorite of ours. They have great dining, the great golf courses, hotels, rolling hills, hiking, and the entire area is pretty family friendly as well. Our favorite hotel is Renaissance Ross Bridge . We love it for family trips or for a couples trip too.

8.) Dallas, Texas

We love Dallas! It is only a 7 hour drive, and it is a great place to spend the weekend. They have tons of great shopping, wonderful hotels, amazing food, and honestly there are so many more great places within driving distance of Dallas too that you’ll want to cross off your list sometime too. We sometimes stay in Grapevine too when visiting. They have the Gaylord Texan there, and it is super family friendly too. They have a small waterpark outdoors too. The entire area is just beautiful, and the weather is typically nice and warm. You can always find something new and some place to visit here.

9.) Oxford, Mississippi

Only a short hour drive away, Oxford is a great spot for a quick little getaway! This little town is so charming and has so much to offer! And it is still constantly growing. They have a couple great hotels, really cute boutiques, great bars and restaurants on the square and you can always watch Ole Miss play. Matt and I have loved our couples trips there, but it’s super family friendly and walkable on the square too. The Oliver Hotel is my favorite hotel in town.

10.) Hot Springs, Arkansas

Hot Springs is a growing area, and that won’t be changing anything soon. Known for its natural springs and bath houses, it is also known for its thoroughbred racing. Hot Springs was the first national park in the U.S, so they have plenty of great hiking and views. And they also have some beautiful hotels, great airbnbs and some great dining and shopping downtown. It is super friendly but also a great spot for couples. Our favorite spot to stay is the Waters Hotel .

Tennessee’s I-40, dubbed the “Music Highway”, connects Nashville and Memphis. Nashville, known as the “Music City,” is renowned for its country music scene. It’s home to the historic Grand Ole Opry and the Country Music Hall of Fame. On the other hand, Memphis is considered the birthplace of blues, soul and rock ‘n’ roll, home to legendary icons like Elvis Presley and B.B. King.

A road trip between the two cities during a weekend getaway offers the chance to explore the heart and soul of Tennessee’s musical legacies. While in Nashville be sure to visit the Ryman Auditorium and Honky Tonk Highway in downtown. And a stay at the Gaylord Opryland Resort with its Soundwaves waterpark, is a popular choice for families.

SheBuysTravel Tip: I crammed both cities into a three-day weekend. If I could do it over again, I’d want five days to really get the most out of both.

Tennessee State Parks Near Memphis

Prefer to camp during your weekend getaway to Memphis? There are several Tennessee state parks nearby where you can stay and play.

• Located about 20 miles north of downtown Memphis, Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park is a large park spanning over 13,000 acres. It offers activities such as hiking, boating, fishing, camping and wildlife viewing. The park, situated along the Mississippi River, is known for its Bald Cypress and Tupelo swamp. Tent camping and cabin rentals available.
• Situated about eight miles southwest of downtown Memphis, T.O. Fuller State Park opened in 1938 as the first state park for African Americans in the segregated South. It offers outdoor recreational activities, including hiking trails and picnicking areas. The park also features the Chucalissa archaeological excavation of a prehistoric Native American village. Camping facilities include RV sites.
• Approximately 60 miles northeast of Memphis, Fort Pillow State Historic Park is known for its Civil War history. Visitors can explore the reconstructed inner fort and learn about the 1864 Battle of Fort Pillow. In addition to 20 miles of hiking trails, the park offers fishing and no-wake boating on 27-acre Sullivan’s Pond.

Getting To and Around Memphis

Memphis is a popular road trip destination. Having your own car provides flexibility for exploring the city and surrounding areas. Memphis International Airport offers connections to major US cities, making the city accessible to guests traveling longer distances.

Many of the most popular Memphis attractions are located in the very walkable downtown. Rideshare services are widely available throughout the city. A $1 per ride trolley service , operated by the Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA), is an option for getting around too.

How to Spend a Weekend in Memphis, Tennessee: a 3-day itinerary

Home of the blues and soul, the birthplace of rock n roll, a major player in the Civil Rights Movement, BBQ recipes that have lasted generations, and a historic hotel with ducks…this is Memphis. Even if you’re only spending a weekend in Memphis, you’ll feel like part of the community instantly because what makes Memphis special is its people and their love for this city.

So let’s dive in to an itinerary for a weekend in Memphis, perfect for 48 hours or a Friday to Sunday trip. Don’t forget your blue suede shoes!

How much does a weekend getaway to Memphis cost?

Expected cost of a weekend getaway to Memphis

An estimated total is $615 for one person if traveling alone. However, if you’re splitting any of these with a group (meaning the hotel, food, or parking), the cost per person will be lower. If you opt for below average accommodation (less than $150 per night) this will also be cheaper.

Where should you stay in Memphis?

Memphis has a lot of great neighborhoods, but I know safety is a common concern for travelers. That said, downtown is a great location near Beale Street, the Civil Rights Museum, and the beautiful and well-preserved South Main Street.

Here are some recommended hotels:

• Central Station ($145+ per night) –  A beacon of old and new Memphis, Central Station still functions as a train station but has a quirky, music-centric hotel atop. It features custom music speakers in every room, a 30-ft record wall, and 8 & Sand, their immersive listening lounge bar.
• Moxy Memphis ($109+ per night) – I can’t resist a sustainable property and the Moxy Memphis fits the bill! Plus, they have a beautiful outdoor “porch” where you can cozy up after a long day next to their bonfires.

Outside of downtown, we enjoyed our stay in the Midtown neighborhood with lots of fantastic local eats and a fun, revitalized spot called Overton Square!

While there aren’t a ton of hotels in this area, the Airbnb scene is vibrant with many old restored apartments to call your home base for your trip to Memphis.

How can you save on your trip to Memphis?

Unfortunately when it comes to saving in Memphis, capitalizing on some of our usual money saving travel tips is tricky because Memphis maintains its small-town, community feel without actually being that small of a city.

What I mean is that you won’t find a CityPASS here…so no big attraction pass to save on museum entries, and Groupons are scarce.

That said, there is one secret pass that will save you $27 and that is The Backstage Pass . This music pilgrimage pass covers your entry into the Memphis Rock n Soul Museum, Sun Studio, Graceland, and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. It costs $89 and can be purchased at the Rock n Soul Museum or Stax.

My other favorite tried and true tip is to use that Student ID , friend! It will get you a discount at the Civil Rights Museum.

Another tip to keep in mind is that parking in downtown is free on Sundays so don’t sweat the parking meter or parking app! You can also save on transportation costs by parking at a “Park and Ride” lot then taking public transportation into downtown (via the streetcars).

Finally, while you certainly can save money by cooking your own food or packing breakfasts/lunches, I highly recommend indulging when in Memphis. They are known for their food and honestly even just the meals over one weekend aren’t enough! It’s just that good.

What’s the best way to get around Memphis?

You really do need a car in Memphis…it’s a driving city.

However, parking can get expensive, especially in downtown (except on Sundays when it’s free). So, check out Memphis’s bike share program called Explore Bike Share, which costs $5 for a single ride or $12 for a week.

There are also three streetcar lines that run in downtown, on the riverfront, and on Madison and looks especially gorgeous on South Main. It costs $1 each way. Be sure to check out a map of where the streetcars run .

Some context for your trip

Of course, you’re going to be learning a lot about Memphis in the next few days, but if you’re like me, it can be helpful to know a little context going in. And I’ll be honest, I didn’t know ANYTHING about Memphis before visiting. I watched Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis and that was my context ( I do feel like that movie gave some *missing* context to our visit to Graceland, though ).

Still, here’s some info about Memphis that I wish I had known about ahead of time. Historically, Memphis has Egyptian elements – it was named for an Egyptian city, it sits along a major river (the Mississippi, not the Nile), and even has its own pyramid (the 6 th largest in the world!)…it’s a Bass Pro Shop now but hey, it still counts!

Music in Memphis is not only a part of history, but still connects the city to this day. Rock n roll, soul, blues, modern rap…they’re all crucial to the Memphis we know and love. We’re going to learn about the history of music and of course, listen to a lot of it along the way!

Finally, Memphis tells the story of Black America through not only the Civil Rights Movement, but also the thriving Black culture. As you stroll Beale Street, listen to music, and taste all the BBQ, you have to acknowledge and credit the Black community for their role in all of these things. Memphis tells a story of race through music, art, and food so we’re going to do our best on this itinerary to prioritize learning about it and continuing to support the Black community of Memphis.

Before we dive in, just wanted to share that I’ve compiled this itinerary into a handy download. It’s totally free and super useful to have on your phone (or printed out) when you travel. Just enter your email into the box below so I know where to send it.

Map of your Weekend in Memphis

Memphis Day 1 – context, cuteness, culinary explosiveness, and concerts

Welcome to Memphis! If you can arrive in Memphis with enough time to have a half-day that would be ideal! Of course, if you don’t have time for the full itinerary as it’s laid out, feel free to move things around.

Before you do anything, I recommend stopping by Stax Museum of American Soul Music to pick up the Backstage Pass for everyone in your party as you’ll start using it at locations tomorrow. You can also get it from the Rock n Soul Museum, but Stax has free parking behind so it’s a bit easier to get to.

Allow yourself to learn at the National Civil Rights Museum

We’re going to start off at the National Civil Rights Museum to provide some context for trip. I know we’re starting with a heavy one first, but it’s really important to learn about this history going into the weekend rather than learning it after the fact. And don’t worry we’ll be countering the heaviness with some cuteness later today!

The museum is located at the Lorraine Motel, which is where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. It will take you through an unabridged, chronological Black experience from slavery to the incredible non-violent mobilization of adults and students to the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and the aftermath.

I was truly impressed with how dynamic the museum was. Not only is it a curation of artifacts and accompanying information, it’s an experience to make visitors understand the Black experience (which is obviously impossible unless you experience it first-hand, but they do a great job in trying).

For example, when learning about the Middle Passage, which is the awful sea journey captive Africans were forced to take to the Americas for the slave trade, you not only see examples of how captives were forced to sit during the grueling voyage, but you hear sounds of a captive being whipped in agony. It’s truly awful, powerful, and accomplished exactly what it was supposed to in driving your feelings.

You also experience similar demonstrations of sit-ins, Freedom Rides, the March on Washington, and more.

This museum is powerful and the one absolutely 100% necessary visit on this trip. If you need to adjust this itinerary or cut things out, let this be the ONE thing you prioritize to do. It’s that important! Tickets cost $18 per person, or $16 for students. I recommend booking a timed ticket ahead of time so you can enter more quickly.

Witness the cutest duck march of all time at the Peabody Hotel

I know that first stop was a somber, heavy one, so before we enjoy some BBQ and music, let’s witness one of the cutest things Memphis has to offer – the Peabody Duck March !

Here’s the story. Back in 1933, the manager of the Peabody Hotel and his buddies were out hunting using live duck decoys (it was legal at the time) and after drinking a bit too much whiskey, they thought it would be funny to put the ducks in the Peabody fountain, located in the hotel lobby. What they weren’t expecting was that the public LOVED the ducks!

The mallard ducks live in the fountain during the day and each night traipse a red carpet to the elevator to ride up to the roof, where their enclosure is. In the morning they do the reverse march back to their fountain.

The public can watch both marches (one at 11am and the other at 5pm), but for this Memphis itinerary, we’re going to watch the evening one from the lobby fountain!

Here’s what you need to know about watching the march!

You’ll want to arrive EARLY like at least 45 minutes, but preferably an hour. Bring something to do because it’s important to claim your spot early. It gets packed, especially on the weekends.

Depending on when you arrive, you may have time to visit with the ducks in the fountain before claiming your spot. Tell me these aren’t the cutest things you’ve ever seen?!

While you can sit in the lobby or watch from the balcony around the fountain, the best spot is really down by the elevator. They’ll put up crowd control dividers and indicate where you are allowed to stand so pick a spot and be patient.

Soon, the ducks will march! Just try to watch this without a smile on your face! Impossible!!

Intro to BBQ in Memphis with dinner at Blues City Café

You’re probably getting hungry now. It’s been a long day of travel and exploring so let’s grab the Best Meal on Beale at Blues City Cafe .

Located just a couple blocks from the Peabody Hotel, you can walk here and work up that appetite for a final few minutes.

Hailed as the place to “put some South in your mouth,” Blues City BBQ has been around since 1991 and even has a Band Box stage where musicians like BB King, Jerry Lee Lewis, Booker T., Smashing Pumpkins, and Jack White have played!

The meal to try is their Best Meal on Beale where for only $26 you get a full platter of a half rack of their famous ribs, catfish, baked beans, coleslaw, fries, and Texas Toast! We even got some hushpuppies with ours! Two people can definitely share unless you’re ravenously hungry.

Loved what you tasted? Next door, they have a shop where you can pick up some of their seasoning or BBQ sauce!

Get your party on at Beale Street

It’s Friday night 🎉 so of course Beale Street is the place to be! Beale Street was established in 1841 as an area for black culture and commerce. Despite an epidemic of yellow fever and losing a charter, a former enslaved man, Robert Church, acquired the land and helped bring it back to a thriving place for gathering, business, shopping, music, and food!

Beale Street was the birthplace and location of many important firsts, fights, and moments for the black community. The first radio station programmed entirely for the Black community, called WDIA, was based on Beale Street, as was Ida B. Wells’ anti-segregation newspaper, Free Speech . It was also the location of non-violent marches by Memphis sanitation workers who were on strike, where Martin Luther King Jr. joined them to support – a precursor to his assassination.

Beale Street also played a major role in music as the sound of blues was developed here with artists including B.B. King, Fats Domino, and Little Richard frequenting the night clubs.

There is a lot to do on Beale Street so you can easily pick and choose your poison.

Here are some things to do:

• grab an ice cream sundae or other dessert item from A. Schwab, an old general store and soda fountain.
• hang out with some goats at Silky O’Sullivan’s
• find the “I love Memphis” mural
• read about the history and important figures from all the signs
• try some local beer at Ghost River Brewing Company
• listen to music at one of the many venues including B.B. King’s Blues Club, Tin Roof, Rum Boogie Café, or Club Handy

Day 2 – Elvis, Rock n Roll, and historic food

Today is all about rock n roll in Memphis, not just Elvis, but also the birthplace of rock n roll and other artists who made this genre into the powerhouse it is today. We’ll be tracing the footsteps of these hall of famers with, of course, some amazing food in between!

The best breakfast I’ve ever had at the Arcade Restaurant

I’m not exaggerating when I say that breakfast is by far the most important meal for me when I travel. I am always on the lookout for the top breakfast spots with classic staples or unique twists on breakfast foods.

Suffice it to say that deeming this spot the best breakfast I’ve ever had is no small award to dish out. The Arcade Restaurant was established in 1919 and was frequented by Elvis (they even have a special Elvis booth you can sit in now).

As a classic diner, it may not look like the best breakfast of all time, but please allow it to pleasantly surprise you.

We tried the sweet potato pancakes (which I’ve loved in New Orleans ) and French toast…which I’ve loved everywhere. If you have to pick one, absolutely go with the French toast! It was hands down the best I’ve ever had. It’s fried so it was perfectly crispy on the outside and melt-in-your-mouth delicious on the inside!

Luckily for us breakfast lovers, they even have a breakfast sampler where you can try 2 eggs, 1 piece of French toast, 1 slice of bacon, 1 sausage patty, and 1 sweet potato pancake! YES PLEASE.

Be sure to also try their coffee and walk by Elvis’s booth on your way in – it’s the last one on the left against the windows.

A very Elvis morning at Graceland

This next activity is a great choice whether or not you’re an Elvis fan. Graceland is known as Elvis Presley’s mansion, but now it’s also home to the Elvis Presley Entertainment Complex, which has 10+ exhibits/museums, 2 restaurants, and a soundstage where artists still perform (Weird Al was there the night before we visited).

Tickets to Graceland can seem pricey (I don’t deny this) at $77 per person but that ticket comes with access to an audio tour of the mansion led by John Stamos, and admission to all museum exhibits including Elvis’s planes. It’s one of those things where it hurts a little to pay that admission but it’s a fun, do-it-at-least-once type of opportunity.

I highly recommend opting for the first tour of the day at 9am so you have unobstructed views of the mansion. You can buy timed tickets ahead of time online, or use that Backstage Pass.

When you arrive, proceed in the Ticketing Center where you’ll start the tour with a short video then you’ll board buses to Graceland Mansion. While the beginning of this operation is guided, once you’re in the mansion you can go as slow or fast as you want, assuming crowds aren’t backing things up.

Not only are the grounds of Graceland beautiful, but it is fascinating to see how lavishly decorated (and differently decorated) each room is. I loved the peacock stained glass, brightly colored den, and bohemian style billiards room!

The tour ends at the mediation garden where Elvis and his family are laid to rest.

Once you’re back at the Entertainment Complex, you can start making your way through the exhibits from his cars, to his jumpsuits, to his military years, to his career records! Don’t forget to visit his planes including the Lisa Marie, which you can go inside.

A relaxing lunch at Casablanca

One thing I loved about Memphis was how unsuspecting all of their restaurants were. They weren’t showy or even crowded sometimes, but the food was incredible every single time.

That was the case for Casablanca . This Mediterranean restaurant might not seem like an obvious choice for Memphis food, but it was so delicious!

With three locations in Memphis, we enjoyed our lunch in their Midtown spot. We tried shawarma, hummus, baba ganoush, falafel, and their house made tea (sweetened and unsweetened). Everything was perfect!

And we even had their house made chocolate mousse, which I’m pretty sure will be living in my head rent-free for a long time!

Casablanca address: 1707 Madison Avenue #103

Other options for lunch include Vernon’s Smokehouse or Gladys’s Diner at Graceland (if you don’t want to leave just yet), or Boscos Squared or Memphis Pizza Café , both located in Overton Square in Midtown, a lovely preserved area thriving with local shops, restaurants, and businesses.

Take a break on Memphis Riverboats

Alright at this point, you might be a little museum-ed out ( yes that’s a word now ). So, let’s switch it up by taking a beautiful cruise down the Mississippi River with Memphis Riverboats . We’ll get outside, listen to some music, and admire Memphis from afar.

Afternoon sightseeing tours, which last 90 minutes, cost $26 per person and happen at 2:30pm, though you’ll want to arrive closer to 1:30-2 pm to have time to park, walk over, and secure your seats on the boat. I recommend the top deck because you’ll get unobstructed views of the bridges and surrounding sights!

You can buy alcohol and snacks aboard the boat so plan accordingly. We had no problem bringing our water bottle on, but they do say that outside food and drinks are not allowed.

I don’t want to blather on and on about the cruise because this article is already getting super long, but it’s a relaxing trip and a great break to prevent museum overload!

Learn about the greats at Sun Studio Tour

For the final activity of the day, we’re visiting one of the many iconic recording studios in Memphis, Sun Studio . This is officially the birthplace of rock n roll because the first ever rock n roll song was recorded here (called Rocket 88 by Jackie Brenston) in 1951. It features the first ever distortion sounds made by a busted amp.

Sun Studio is also where Elvis famously got his start with a record called That’s All Right, a cover of Arthur Crudup’s song, he released in 1954.

This recording studio was also home to recording artists Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash! It’s also still a functional recording studio and has been used by artists like U2 and B.B. King.

Tickets for the tour can only be purchased in person the day of and they can sell out. If you’re traveling to Memphis during a busy time (i.e. holidays), you’ll want to pop into Sun Studio before lunch to purchase your tickets ahead of time (they open at 10 am).

Tours are guided and there are set times, so you’ll be aiming for one of the last two tours of the day at 4:30 or 5:30 pm. Be sure to touch the door handle of the old entrance on your way out for good luck!

A tasty BBQ invention for dinner

I love trying new foods when traveling (I think most people do). It’s part of what makes a destination so unique and really showcases the history and people of place. That’s what this dinner choice is for.

We’re headed to The Bar-B-Q Shop to try their famous BBQ spaghetti, which they are the creators of!

We were so lucky and grateful to speak with the owner, Eric Vernon, who is a third generation owner of the restaurant. When we shared we were excited to try the BBQ spaghetti, he clued us in that the best way to eat it is on the Texas Toast, which was a horribly messy endeavor but it was SO GOOD.

You’ll want to order a combo plate that includes pulled pork or brisket and the BBQ spaghetti, this way you can try more of their delicious menu!

I really loved how homey The Bar-B-Q Shop was. Everyone was taken care of even though they were understaffed. Families were jovial and couples were having a great time (us included). You can just feel the difference in community here, which Eric pointed out as well – that what makes Memphis special is not their big activities, but their people, relationships, and community.

It’s almost impossible to describe in writing, but you’ll discover it soon enough on your trip to Memphis.

Memphis Day 3 – a little soul for the soul

For the final day in Memphis, we’re continuing our music journey at the Rock n Soul Museum, created by the Smithsonian Institution, and at Stax Museum of American Soul Music, which is part of the U.S. Civil Rights Trail.

But first, coffee…at Bluff City Coffee and Bakery

Did you really think after all that hoopla about breakfast, that I would pick a breakfast spot with only drinks…of course not.

Bluff City Coffee and Bakery has breakfast sandwiches with lots of veggie and vegan options. You’ll want to get your sandwich on their homemade biscuits – we loved the rosemary scallion and garlic cheddar.

To pair, I’d recommend the mocha (my drink of choice), the Golden Kelli (espresso with honey, cinnamon, and milk), or Haley’s Comet ( as a scientist , I appreciate this name), which is their signature latte with espresso, Chai, caramel apple syrup, and milk. And yes, they have alternative milk options like soy, almond, and oatmilk!

While there are a few locations, the location on South Main is in a beautiful, historic spot. You’ll see lots of preserved buildings, even just from the Bluff City Coffee & Bakery window. And to pair with that, peep the Newman collection historic photos of old Memphis displayed in the shop.

Discover the evolution of music at Rock n Soul Museum

You know how we visited the Civil Rights Museum to provide some context for this trip? Well this museum is a piggyback on that.

The Rock n Soul Museum tells the story of how rock, blues, and soul were developed from songs of struggle from farmers in the early 1900’s. It shared how differences in Black and white experiences shaped the evolution of these musical genres.

You’ll learn about the influences of the Grand Ole Opry, segregation, and religion, specifically gospel.

The museum only takes about an hour to get through, and it will help you understand the next stop a bit deeper.

Tickets are $13 for adults, but don’t forget to use the Backstage Pass here, and they open at 10 am.

Defy racial boundaries at Stax Museum of American Soul Music

We’ve covered rock n roll and a bit of blues, so now it’s time for soul, baby!

Stax Records is such an influential spot because they truly defied racial boundaries that were common at the time elsewhere. The founders were siblings Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton, both white, who brought on interracial bands and musicians like Booker T. and the M.G.’s.

Otis Redding, Sam and Save, Albert King, Carla Davis, and Isaac Hayes, all recorded hits for Stax Records in the 1950s and 60s.

The museum shares the story of how soul was created from gospel sounds. It showcases their role as a racial oasis and even tackles how social issues, namely the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., changed everything.

The museum takes about an hour to an hour and a half to get through and tickets cost $13 for adults, but you can use your Backstage Pass here.

Farewell lunch

At this point, you’re welcome to head back home. But, if you have a little extra time, might as well grab some lunch at another Memphis staple. I’d recommend Central BBQ , which is right across the way from the National Civil Rights Museum. They’re known for their slow-smoked, fall-off-the-bone ribs.

Another spot I wanted to visit, but unfortunately ran out of time, was Dyers , a burger place on Beale Street known for their 100 year old cooking oil. Okay yeah, that kind of sounds gross, but where else can you taste that! Their grease hasn’t been changed in decades and has even been moved when Dyers moved locations!

Finally, you can also try Gus’s (World Famous) Fried Chicken , which has locations all over the US, but was started about 40 minutes from Memphis. It was the Memphis location, opened in 2001, that solidified Gus’s as the world famous restaurant they are today!

I hope you’ve enjoyed this itinerary! Memphis is truly special and I know you’ll feel it too when you visit.

What a lively city! There seems to be so much to do and eat. The food looks amazing, especially the BBQ spaghetti which we would love to try.

It was such a special city and absolutely, the BBQ spaghetti was a must-try!

I just went to Memphis in April and loved it. I didn’t know what to expect but there’s so much to see and do in the city. I was there almost a week and wasn’t bored. The ducks were definitely cute to watch and I left a bit more of an Elvis fan so I’d say it was a good trip

Sadly we have not yet visited Memphis but the music history would draw us for sure. I love the idea of using bikes to get around in the city. And your tip that we should not miss the National Civil Rights Museum. We won’t pass on great bbq to fuel our adventures in Memphis.

16 Fantastic Day Trips From Memphis

Memphis is a fun city full of musical history, culture, great food, and fun. It is Tennessee’s second-largest city, located in the southwest corner of the state. There are a wealth of day trips within a few hours drive of Memphis that are fun, educational, and exciting. 

Memphis is an excellent base to explore other parts of Tennessee and neighboring states. Let’s look at some natural wonders, state parks, unique towns, cities, and exciting destinations to consider for a day trip from Memphis. 

Each of these trips is three and a half hours or less drive from Memphis. The day trips selected are listed in alphabetical order. Every destination mentioned will provide a perfect day trip. 

Note: Some information was obtained during press trips to Arkansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee. All opinions are my own.   

1. Brownsville, Tennessee

An hour’s drive north of Memphis is Brownsville , a music heritage destination. Known for its award-winning barbecue, Hatchie River, and the West TN Delta Heritage Center home to the Tina Turner Museum, you will find plenty to do during a day trip to this destination. 

Pro Tip:   For delicious authentic barbecue, eat at Helen’s BBQ . One of the few women pitmasters of the south, Helen has been featured on the Food Network and various magazines. 

2. Franklin, Tennessee

The quaint city of Franklin feels more like a small town. The quintessential Main Street includes a plethora of shops and restaurants in the historic downtown area, including Landmark Booksellers, which was the setting for the Hallmark movie, The Bridge . 

If you need more shopping options, the Franklin Factory is full of artisan shops. Or visit Leaper’s Fork for Antiques. 

Franklin is the place to visit if you have pets since it is a model pet-friendly town, one of the first to be certified in the Better Cities for Pets program.

3. Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge, Tennessee

The beautiful protected area of wild swampland with murky waters known as the Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge is about an hour from Memphis.  

If you are into the outdoors, the refuge is an excellent place for kayaking, hiking, and biking. You can observe wildlife such as deer, bald eagles, various ducks, geese, and turkeys. 

4. Heber Springs, Arkansas

A drive of about two and half hours brings you to Heber Springs , a wonderland for nature lovers. You will find a quiet retreat with mineral springs to relax at, while also enjoying many water activities such as boating, fly-fishing, and more on the Little Red River and the Greers Ferry Lake. If you are into hiking, there are excellent trails throughout the springs.    

The town hosts markets, vintage shops, restaurants, galleries, and train lovers will enjoy the Ruland Junction Toy Train Museum .

5. Holly Springs, Mississippi

Along the Southern Tennessee border is the small city of Holly Springs . Located in Marshall County, the city hosts the Strawberry Plains Audubon Center and the Marshall County Historical Museum , which houses artifacts of the Civil War.  

Holly Springs is only an hour’s drive from Memphis and is also another nature lover’s paradise.

6. Hot Springs, Arkansas

Anytime I am within driving distance of a day trip to Hot Springs , I will try to fit it into my schedule. The 3-hour trip is a bit longer drive, and I have to warn you, the drive from Memphis to Hot Springs via Route 40 is a beast. But once you get there, you will be glad you made the journey.

Hot Springs is a resort city with thermal mineral springs. The water is heated beneath the earth, and many believe that soaking in it or drinking it provides healing powers. I’m not sure it will heal you, but it sure feels wonderful to soak in the hot spring water. Check out the traditional mineral baths popular with travelers on Bathhouse Row . 7. Jackson, Mississippi

The capital of Mississippi, Jackson is another fantastic day trip, but it is a bit of a drive (3 hours), so plan to get an early start for a full day of exploring.

Named after President Andrew Jackson, it is considered the cultural center of Mississippi. You can enjoy a variety of museums and historical buildings as well and a growing foodie trail. The city also has a lively music scene.

8. Jackson, Tennessee

Yes, there are two cities named Jackson in two different states. This Jackson is in Tennessee and is much smaller. It is also named after the same former president, Andrew Jackson. 

Jackson, Tennessee , is much closer (about an hour-and-a-half drive) and makes for a perfect day trip. Located in West Tennessee, Jackson serves up Civil War history, music heritage, and exciting outdoor adventures. A few places of interest include Rusty’s TV and Movie Car Museum , the Cypress Grove Nature Park , and the Casey Jones Home & Railroad Museum , highlighting the expansion across the states and some Civil War sites. 

9. Little Rock, Arkansas

 A small city that you can explore in a day in a neighboring state, Little Rock , the capital of Arkansas, is a 2-hour drive west of Memphis.

Sitting on the bank of the Arkansas River, there are state museums offering tourists an insight into the people, cultures, and diverse history of the state.   

Consider a tour of the Governor’s Mansion , the Clinton Presidential Center and be brave and walk across the world’s longest pedestrian bridge, Big Dam Bridge .

10. Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park, Tennessee

This day trip stays within the state and is just a mere 15-minute drive from downtown Memphis. Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park provides natural surroundings when you want to escape from the city.

This unique swampland hovering along the Mississippi River provides wildlife and various habitats. There are numerous walking trails, and you can paddle the swamps in canoes or kayaks. There is also a visitor center. 

11. Nashville, Tennessee

This is a longer drive, but you can’t ignore “Music City.” A little over 3 hours away from Memphis, so head out early.  Nashville is the state capital of Tennessee.

13. Paris, Tennessee

Located in rural Northwest Tennessee (two and half hours from Memphis), Paris is full of character, intriguing history, friendly folks, scrumptious food, and picturesque nature.

Be sure to check out the Eiffel Tower Park to view the 70-foot tall lighted replica of the Eiffel Tower. There is also a splash park, disk golf, pickleball, biking, fishing, and more.

1. Tupelo, Mississippi

Elvis Presley – one of music’s most revered legends – is well known for his association with Memphis.

The performer began his career in the city in the 1950’s and eventually died in his Graceland estate, which can be visited in Memphis today.

Less well known is the fact that Elvis was born and spent the early years of his life in the small city of Tupelo, found across the border in Mississippi.

Elvis grew up here in a ramshackle family home before relocating to the big city when he was a teenager.

Tupelo is really a pilgrimage for many Elvis fans – it’s possible to see the house where he was raised, which has become somewhat of a shrine.

There’s a detailed museum showcasing his life and talents, and although the city of Tupelo has little else to offer, the birthplace of Elvis is reason enough to make the journey from Memphis.

2. Tuscumbia, Alabama

After paying homage to the birthplace of the legendary Elvis Presley, music lovers will undoubtedly need to plan a day trip to the state of Alabama to visit the Music Hall of Fame in Tuscumbia.

The city lies on the banks of the beautiful Tennessee River and is one of the oldest European settlements in the area.

As historic as it is though, Tuscumbia is mostly visited because of its present-day association with music.

6. Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park, Tennessee

A little closer to Memphis – this time within the state boundaries – Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park is just a 15-mile drive away from the city, but it’s easy to spend more than just the day immersed in the beautiful natural surroundings found here.

This state park really does offer an escape from the urban confines of Memphis and is incredibly easy to reach.

Meeman-Shelby Forest is full of unique swamplands formed on the edge of the huge Mississippi River.

The best thing to do here is to get out on the spectacular swamps in kayaks or canoes and paddle through the forest.

7. Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge, Tennessee

8. Holly Springs National Forest, Mississippi

Holly Springs National Forest is a huge area of diverse wilderness found just an hour’s drive south-east of Memphis.

Memphis has rightfully earned its place in history for its impact on American music and the Civil Rights Movement.

But since the city is also so well located, near Mississippi and Arkansas , with good highway connections, bus routes, and train lines, it's a great base for visitors looking to maximize their time. 

Getting outside Memphis  allows travelers to dig deeper into what makes the region so unique, including its cuisine and the music of the Blues Highway that starts there and continues south. It’s also a chance to see the wide open spaces beyond the city skyline. Here are six of our favorite day trips from Memphis.

1. Celebrate the powerful women of music and barbecue in Brownsville, Tennessee

Travel time: 1 hour

Brownsville is where visitors can learn about the Queen of Rock n Roll – Tina Turner. Her one-room schoolhouse was transported from nearby Nutbush, Tennessee, to the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Museum and here you’ll find a world-class collection of Turner memorabilia.

The school is adjacent to the former home of blues pioneer Sleepy John Estes, another former area resident. The Dunbar-Carver Museum also covers the region’s cultural heritage.

Stop by for a meal at Helen’s BBQ , a century-old building named for the matriarch that still oversees the pit. She’s the recipient of the Southern Foodways Alliance Lifetime Achievement Award for her slow-roasted pork, ribs, and sausage.

How to get to Brownsville from Memphis: An hour’s drive east of Memphis on I-40 will put you at exit 56, where you can dive into the museums or choose to venture a further ten minutes into town.

2. Embrace your inner student in Oxford, Mississippi

Travel time: 1 hour and 20 minutes

Oxford, Mississippi is home to the University of Mississippi, often called “Ole Miss.” The school dates back to 1844 and is best experienced through football game day in the Grove, at the center of campus, where tailgating crowds gather. 

Oxford is also where author William Faulkner lived. His home, Rowan Oak , has been turned into a museum, where you can walk through the grounds and home, with its furnishings and book cases. Another essential stop in town is Square Books , a sprawling bookstore with two satellite locations on the historic square covering just about every genre. 

Despite its relatively small size, Oxford has multiple award-winning restaurants, including the empire of Chef John Currence, who opened City Grocery on the square in 1992, where it remains a beloved institution. Part of the same restaurant group, Snackbar is run by James Beard-award-winning Chef Vishwesh Bhatt, using Mississippi ingredients and influences from his native India. 

How to get to Oxford from Memphis: Take I-55 south out of town until you cross into Mississippi. In Batesville, turn on 278, which brings you right into Oxford.

3. Tour Dyess, Wilson and Helena, historic towns of the Arkansas Delta

Travel time: 1 hour and 20 minutes to Dyess; 1 hour and 20 minutes to Helena

On the other side of the Mississippi River, you’ll find several interesting towns connected to American history. In Dyess, see where music legend Johnny Cash spent his childhood working the fields. His childhood home has been preserved at Historic Dyess Colony . The exhibits include photos taken by eyewitnesses at his famous Folsom Prison concert.

The neighboring town of Wilson feels straight out of a postcard, with restaurants like Wilson Cafe , which offers souped-up soul food. Hampson Archaeological Museum State Park documents the region’s Indigenous people with pottery and arrow points. 

If you have time, venture south to Helena-West Helena, host of the annual King Biscuit Blues Festival  in October. During the rest of the year, pop into the Delta Cultural Center to learn about the region and sip on sweet potato vodka at Delta Dirt Distillery , a family-run operation using one of the area’s chief agricultural products.

How to get to Dyess from Memphis: Take I-55 north for about 45 minutes and venture off onto exit 41. From there, go left on Arkansas Hwy 14W, travel 5 miles and take another left onto Hwy 297.

4. Hear the blues in Clarksdale, Mississippi

Travel time: 1 hour 30 minutes

An air of mystique still hovers over this Mississippi town that’s said to be the root of one the Delta’s most haunting tales. Clarksdale claims to be home to the legendary crossroads where Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil to learn the blues.

The town is still home to the densest concentration of juke joints in the Delta, from the tourist-friendly Ground Zero Blues Club to hole-in-the-wall Red's Lounge . If you’re not a night owl, you can still learn about the blues at the Delta Blues Museum , which has the cabin where Muddy Waters lived and B.B. King’s guitar.

If you’re hungry, Hooker Grocer & Eatery is named for musician John Lee Hooker and hosts live music. And don’t miss Abe’s Bar-B-Q , a circa 1924 staple serving its namesake pit-roasted pork plus Delta tamales, a local spin on the traditional Mexican dish. 

How to get to Clarksdale from Memphis: The cities are connected by Greyhound bus, but most travelers will find it easiest to drive. Travel down B.B. King Boulevard, which becomes US Hwy 61 as you head south from downtown Memphis. Follow the Blues Highway for about an hour and a half until you hit Clarksdale.

5. Stop by the birthplace of the King in Tupelo, Mississippi

Travel time: 1 hour and 40 minutes

Before Elvis Presley was crowned the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, he was a boy living in the farm town of Tupelo. Visitors to Tupelo can view the two-room house known as Presley’s birthplace , see where he bought his first guitar at Tupelo Hardware , and dine in his favorite booth at Johnnie’s Drive In , known for its “slug burger,” a doughy burger recipe dating from the Great Depression. The fandom reaches fever pitch during the annual Tupelo Elvis Festival  in June.

Tupelo is also the halfway point of the Natchez Trace Parkway , one of the nation’s most beautiful scenic drives, connecting Nashville to Natchez, Mississippi. Stop by the official visitor’s center here to learn more about it and drive a few miles on the quiet route.

The city has some great restaurants ranging from donut shops to fine dining. But if you want to catch live music, be sure to head to Blue Canoe . The restaurant and bar has burgers, sandwiches and performers nightly, including past shows by Gary Clark, Jr and Alabama Shakes. 

How to get to Tupelo from Memphis: If you’re driving, take Lamar Avenue south towards Byhalia. This becomes Hwy 78 and carries you all the way to Tupelo in just under two hours. It’s also a popular tour and buses run every Friday from Graceland .

6. Live out your presidential dreams in Little Rock, Arkansas

Travel time: 2 hours

History hounds and outdoor enthusiasts will find lots to love in Little Rock. the Clinton Presidential Library is the nearest presidential library to Memphis. It offers insight into The White House from 1993–2001, alongside a replica Oval Office and President Clinton’s limousine.

Outside, the Arkansas River Trail provides a 15.6-mile loop through hardwood forests and meadows that’s crowned by the Big Dam Bridge , the longest pedestrian and bicycle bridge in North America. If cultural offerings are more your thing, stop by the quirky Esse Purse Museum . Even if you’re not a fashionista, it’s a fascinating look into the things we carry.

Best Day Trips from Memphis

State: Mississippi Distance from Memphis: 209 miles (2 hours, 53 minutes)

The city of Jackson was founded in 1821 and named after General Andrew Jackson, who would later become the President of the US.

Today, it is the capital of Mississippi with a rich historical background, which you’ll find vivid proof of throughout the city’s many museums and historical sights.

The Mississippi city is the perfect place for a weekend trip from Memphis if you’re on the hunt for family adventures and interesting tours.

When there, be sure to stop by the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science that provides natural history through exhibitions and installations – it is perfect for traveling families!

The Old Capitol Museum is also a must-see in Jackson and is the former seat of state government. Youngesters will also enjoy a trip to the Mississippi Children’s Museum .

Other popular things to do are to visit the Mississippi Petrified Forest, the Civil Rights Museum, Museum of Art, Eudora Welty House and Garden, and LeFleur’s Bluff State Park.

2. Heber Springs

State: Arkansas Distance from Memphis: 132 miles (2 hours, 26 minutes)

Heber Springs was founded by Max Frauenthal in the mid-19th-century and was formerly named Sugar Loaf. In 1882, the town was renamed to honor Dr. Heber Jones, an advocate of the healing powers of the springs located in the area.

Today, Heber Springs is the gateway to Greers Ferry Lake and the Little Red River, offering picturesque landscapes, outdoor recreation, and a historical experience.

Some must-visit places in and around Heber Springs include Collins Creek Cascade and Trout Stream (a new wild trout fishery), Magness Lake (you will find a large population of Trumpeter swans), and Dam Site Marina (for watersports)!

Some other fantastic things to do in the area are to visit the Ozark Country Market of organic and homemade products, the Ruland Junction Toy Train Museum, and the Vintage Market Home and Garden Decor. Don’t pass up a trip to the wonderful Ellen Hobgood Gallery, either!

3. Clarksdale 

State: Mississippi Distance from Memphis: 78 miles (1 hour, 20 minutes)

Visit the birthplace of blues music – Clarksdale! It is located along the Sunflower River and was named after John Clark, the founder of the city. Today, Clarksdale is a bustling trading and agricultural center and one of the best day trips from Memphis for music lovers.

Here, you can enjoy live music, visit plenty of museums, stay at rustic places, and enjoy plenty of outdoor attractions.

Get acquainted with the history of blues by visiting the Delta Blues Museum, the Rock and Blues Museum , and the Delta Cultural Museum .

And of course, you must check out a live music show – head to Reds Lounge, Ground Zero Blues Club, Hambone Art and Music, or the Shack Up Inn to do so .

In addition, be sure to stop by the Carnegie Public Library or enjoy a canoeing trip down the Mississippi River.

4. Blanchard Springs Caverns

State: Arkansas Distance from Memphis: 164 miles (3 hours, 4 minutes)

Blanchard Springs Caverns is a constantly growing limestone cave system in the Ozark–St. Francis National Forest. Situated 200 feet below ground, it’s one of the most visited caves in the country.

Several guided tours are available depending on the weather. The Dripstone Trail will take you to two huge rooms filled with stalactites. The Cathedral Room has a 70-foot column, 55-foot draperies, and a natural bridge.

The Discovery Trail includes a little climbing and lots of walking. It’s called ‘discovery’ because it passes through the cave’s natural entrance, where the explorers once entered.

The tour will lead you to the lower parts of the cave where you will have a chance to see the stream, and maybe meet some bats! The Tennessee caverns offer 30 campsites, hiking trails, and plenty of amenities nearby (especially food)!

5. Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge

State: Tennessee Distance from Memphis: 56 miles (50 minutes)

This Tennessee wildlife refuge was established in 1964 to provide a habitat for migrating waterfowl.

Situated along the scenic Hatchie River, Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge spans over 11,556 acres. It boasts rich wildlife, including songbirds, waterfowl, shorebirds as well as various species of mammals, reptiles, and fish.

It also helps to preserve the diminishing bottomland hardwood forests. Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge is the perfect place for a family getaway from Memphis and other places nearby.

Once at the refuge, you will find many guides, volunteers, exhibits, signs, and more that aims to educate you about the Tennessee refuge.

The refuge offers various fishing and hunting opportunities. Every year it hosts an annual youth fishing rodeo in June, on Free Fishing Day. Fishing is permitted in Oneal and Oxbow Lakes . 

6. Hardy 

State: Arkansas Distance from Memphis: 131 miles (2 hours, 36 minutes)

A small mountain town that was founded in 1883, Hardy , is located on the Spring River in Arkansas.

The area got its name in honor of railroad contractor James A. Hardy. Hardy emerged as the result of the construction of the Kansas City, Springfield, and Memphis Railroad. In the twentieth century, the small Arkansas town became a popular tourist destination.

Hardy offers a variety of attractions for its visitors and we mention a few of them below!

Griffin Park features zip-lining, paintball, horseback riding for the adventurous guest. The Vintage Motorcar Museum boasts over 60 vintage automobiles for car lovers.

Powhatan Courthouse State Park includes the actual historic courthouse in the region and is a fantastic landmark to check out for history buffs.

Lake Charles State Park has campsites, hiking trails, swimming beaches, and playgrounds and is one of the most popular reasons to visit the town. The Ozark Classic Crafts Mall is home to many craft artists and offers several shops for customers – great for souvenir shopping!

7. Chickasaw State Park

State: Tennessee Distance from Memphis: 80 miles (1 hour, 26 minutes)

Chickasaw State Park was named for the Chickasaw Tribe that once settled in the area. The 1,400 acres of land became a Tennessee state park in 1955.

Located on higher terrain in West Tennessee, it offers myriads of outdoor adventures and is a perfect place for a day trip from Memphis. Lakes Placid and La Joie provide water recreation if you’re heading there during the summer months.

If you enjoy golfing in a peaceful area, consider hitting the links at Chickasaw Golf. Various picnic spots are located throughout the park, with grills and picnic tables available.

The park boasts three camping areas: t he RV, the Tent , and t he Wrangler campgrounds. Chickasaw is also known for its cabins, swimming, hiking, boating, horseback riding, and fishing.

8. Jonesboro 

State: Arkansas Distance from Memphis: 70 miles (1 hour, 5 minutes)

Jonesboro is the fifth-largest city in Arkansas and it’s situated on Crowley’s Ridge and was established in 1859. 

Today, the city is known for museums, art centers, shops, entertainment complexes, and natural attractions. Start your trip at the Arkansas State Museum , where you can partake in historical, cultural, and educational programs.

Visit The Bradbury Art Museum which houses a fine collection of contemporary art.

To enjoy the natural environment, there are plenty of parks and nature centers close to Jonesboro including the Forrest L. Wood Crowley’s Ridge Nature Center, Craighead Forest Park, Lake Frierson State Park, Ultimate Air Trampoline Park, and Lake Charles State Park.

Jonesboro is also home to two stadiums- the Centennial Bank Stadium and Tomlinson Stadium , both must-sees for sports lovers. To experience culture and history, go to t he Fancy Attic Antique and t he Skirmish at Jonesboro.

9. Oxford 

State: Mississippi Distance from Memphis: 85 miles (1 hour, 18 minutes)

Oxford is often referred to as the Cultural Mecca of the South. This small Mississippi town has inspired many famous musicians, artists, and writers throughout the years.

The town is home to William Faulkner, Larry Brown, and Barry Hannah.  Today, Oxford boasts the University of Mississippi, unique architecture, history, tasteful food, and a lot of green space.

Visit the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) and check out the University Museum . Explore the town’s art galleries, t he Oxford Treehouse Gallery , Southside Gallery, Gallery 130, Oxford Art Crawl, and the home of William Faulkner called  Rowan Oak .

Check out the Burns-Belfry Museum and Multicultural Center , Holly Springs National Forest, Sardis Lake, Avent Park, the L.Q.C. Lamar House, and College Hill Presbyterian Church when you’re there to see some of Oxford’s most famous landmarks.

10. Tupelo 

State: Mississippi Distance from Memphis: 115 miles (1 hour, 38 minutes)

Welcome to the birthplace of Elvis Presley! Situated in the Mississippi Hills region, the city of Tupelo depicts American architecture, history, music, and literature.

It is the place where the 444-mile historic Natchez Trace Parkway headquarters is located and the area was incorporated in 1866. The name derives from the Native American term Tuh Pu Lah, meaning to scream.

Undoubtedly, your first destination should be the Elvis Presley Birthplace and Museum. Then you can enjoy visiting the Tupelo Veterans Museum, Oren Dunn City Museum, the Tupelo National Battlefield, and the Relics Antique Market Place .

If you’re a nature lover, be sure to check out Tombigbee State Park, Trace State Park, Elvis Presley Lake, and the local ampground .

Tupelo hosts many festivals and special events, including t he Annual Tupelo Elvis Festival and Frank’s Labor Day Annual Balloon Race Festival .

11. Tuscumbia 

State: Alabama Distance from Memphis: 148 miles (2 hours, 28 minutes)

Located on the Tennessee River, Tuscumbia was one of the early centers for agriculture, industry, and commerce. The city was founded in 1817 and was formerly called Ococoposa. Later, it was renamed Tuscumbia in honor of a Cherokee chief.

Today, Tuscumbia is a popular tourist destination with plenty of things to do and to see! It is one of the most popular Memphis day trips due to Helen Keller and receives a lot of tourism even today.

Some must-visits include Ivy Green , the birthplace of Helen Keller (built in 1820), the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, FAME Recording Studios, Belle Mont Mansion, the Tuscumbia Railroad Depot Museum, Rattlesnake Saloon, the Palace Ice Cream and Sandwich Shop, Rosenbaum House, and the Old Railroad Bridge.

For recreational activities and a little bit of nature, you can check out Spring Park, Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve, and Deibert Park . 

12. Nashville

State: Tennessee Distance from Memphis: 211 miles (3 hours, 3 minutes)

It may be the most obvious place on this list, but if you’re new to Memphis , you must definitely take a day trip to Nashville (okay… or a weekend trip). Nashville truly is a musical haven.

The city was founded in 1779 and named after Francis Nash, a general of the Continental Army. Due to its location, Nashville became an important port and railroad center. 

Modern Nashville boasts streets filled with music studios, concert halls, clubs, museums, and gorgeous landscapes. Visiting the city in winter is also a great idea!

If you’re visiting Nashville for the first time , below are some of our recommendations to check out on a day trip (or weekender).

Be sure to check out Broadway where you’ll find many clubs, restaurants, shops, and saloons. It is a must for any Nashville itinerary !

The most famous street in the city is Music Row and this is where several country music record labels and production companies are located.

You should also check out the Grand Ole Opry where regular concerts take place, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, the Hermitage, the Parthenon, the Tennessee State Museum, and the Adventure Science Center.

There are a lot of campgrounds near Nashville if you’re looking to escape from the city and stay overnight in the area and make this more than just a day trip from Memphis.

13. Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park

State: Tennessee Distance from Memphis: 15 miles (23 minutes)

Just 13 miles away from Memphis, you will find Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park one of the most beautiful places in Tennessee in the fall , and the rest of the year. It is a great Memphis day trip if you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle for some raw nature.

It covers 12,539-acre hardwood bottomland areas. Situated on the Chickasaw Bluffs, it boasts various types of trees like large oaks, American beech, hickory, as well as two National Champion Trees. This land is protected and home to many species of animals.

The park offers many opportunities for outdoor adventures. If you like hiking, it has 20 miles of hiking trails, stretching throughout the heavy forest areas.

For wildlife spotters, the park is home to over 200 species of songbirds, waterfowl, as well as deer, turkey, beaver, fox, otter, and bobcats.

The park has a 36-hole golf course for professional and amateur players. For fishing, kayaking, canoeing, stop at Poplar Tree Lake where you will find several water opportunities for adventurers.

14. Mississippi River State Park 

State: Arkansas Distance from Memphis: 61 miles (1 hour, 5 minutes)

Mississippi River State Park is located in the eastern part of Arkansas in the St. Francis National Forest. It has access to the Mississippi River, the St. Francis River, and many lakes.

The forest covers 22,000 acres and features two scenic byways passing through it- the Great River Road National Scenic Byway and Crowley’s Ridge Parkway National Scenic Byway .

Take a drive along either of these roads and spot the wildlife, including whitetail deer, wild turkey, squirrels, and raccoons. Stop at the park’s visitor center where you can learn more about the famous river and its use over the years. 

15. Wolf River 

State: Tennessee Distance from Memphis: 35 miles (37 minutes)

The Wolf River begins in Holly Springs National Forest, flowing into Tennessee as it travels 100 miles westward, and enters the Mississippi River in downtown Memphis.

The river is thought to be 12,000 years old and had various names like the Chichica, the Margot, and the Nashoba. It covers 90-miles of wetlands and forest is home to some of the state’s most famous wildlife.

The Wolf River plays a vital role in providing residents with fresh drinking water, as well as recreational opportunities (and fishing). You can also sign up for a paddling trip organized by the Wolf River Conservancy .

In addition, be sure to stop by the  Wolf River Wildlife Education Area , located near the river and the perfect place for kids to learn a bit more about their surroundings. 

16. Sardis Lake

State: Mississippi Distance from Memphis: 92 miles (1 hour, 28 minutes)

A short drive away from Memphis, you’ll find Sardis Lake . It is a 98,520-acre reservoir located along the Little Tallahatchie River in Mississippi.

The lake was originally built for flood control and was named after the town of Sardis.

Today, it has become a popular tourist destination providing various recreation opportunities for visitors. Sardis Lake is divided into upper and lower areas.

The lake is a true gem for anglers keen to catch blue catfish, white river catfish, crappie, largemouth bass, and white bass.

Boat ramps are provided at almost all available recreation areas. Visit John W. Kyle State Park which offers campsites, a recreation center, and a golf course. Sardis Lake is also well known for its sand beaches!

17. Little Rock 

State: Arkansas Distance from Memphis: 137 miles (1 hour, 59 minutes)

Little Rock is located along the Arkansas River, at the base of the Ouachita Mountains. The city was incorporated in 1831 and received its name from a rock formation called little rock by French explorer Jean-Baptiste Bénard de la Harpe. 

It is the largest city in Arkansas, as well as its capital and economic center. On the streets of the city, you’ll find historical sites, renowned museums, and lovely parks.

There are so many places worth visiting in Little Rock and some of the top sights include the Arkansas State Capitol, Big Dam Bridge, Central High School National Historic Site, the William J. Clinton Presidential Library, the Museum of Discovery, the Historic Arkansas Museum, Old State House Museum, Esse Purse Museum and Store, Heifer Village, the Arkansas River Trail, Riverfront Park, and the Rock Town Distillery.

There are plenty of reasons to take a day trip from Memphis to Little Rock but I do suggest booking an overnight and staying a bit longer if you have time!
