15 Best Things to Do in Oran (Algeria)

The city of Oran is a beautiful coastal city that, when constructed, was inspired by the seaside resort of France’s Nice. It is one of Algeria’s most important cities, as it has much cultural, commercial and industrial importance, as well as being one of the country’s most visited cities. In the past, the city was used for trading purposes until it was ruled by the French.

Oran features a long boulevard that is lined with restaurants, cafés, and ice cream parlours. It also boasts fantastic views of the coast, the magnificent surrounding cliffs and the harbour. The city also has numerous other facilities and amenities for tourists, including a few luxury resorts. There is much to see and do in and around the city, which makes it a very appealing destination. Here are the 15 best things to do in Oran.

1. Walk around the city centre

Cathédrale du Sacré-Cœur d'Oran

Oran’s city centre is filled with numerous impressive French-built buildings. It is quite interesting, and like taking a trip back to 1940s France.

One of the buildings you will see on this walk is the Cathédrale du Sacré-Cœur d’Oran, which was the first French cathedral built in the country. The cathedral is now home to a library.

You will also stumble upon Place du 1er Novembre; Oran’s main square. The square features a lovely fountain and monument that is surrounded by buildings, like the town hall.

2. Admire the city from above

Fort Santa Cruz

Fort Santa Cruz sits on Mount Murdjadjo around 400 metres above sea level. The fort was built by the Ottomans and Spaniards in the 17th century in a strategic location overlooking the city, the Mers El Kébir port and the Medeterranian Sea.

There is a magnificent castle and chapel on site, as well as a massive statue of the Virgin Mary. The statue is said to be a replica of the one at Notre Dame de la Garde in Marseilles.

It is well worth making the hike up to Fort Santa Cruz to admire the spectacular views. It also makes for a great escape outside of the lively city.

3. Visit a synagogue converted mosque

The Great Synagogue of Oran

Yes, that’s right. The Abdallah Ibn Salam Mosque used to be the Great Synagogue of Oran. It was once one of North Africa’s largest synagogues.

By the time the country gained its independence, nearly all Algerian Jews had moved to France. It also made the country predominately Muslim.

The Great Synagogue of Oran was built in 1880, but inaugurated in 1918. It became the Abdallah Ibn Salam Mosque in the 1960s and was named after a 7th-century Jew that converted to Islam.

4. Go back in time

Sidi el Houari district

The Sidi el Houari district is the first ever district in Oran. It is split into three quarters, each of which has its own charm.

Casbah is the oldest part of the district and the city. Saint-Louis is built around the church that bares the same name, while the old port area sits along the coast below the Aïdour.

The entire Sidi el Houari district overlooks the sea, as it is built along the slopes of the Aïdour and Wadi Rhi. It is highly recommended to explore the district on foot and gaze at the historic buildings.

5. Eat fine food with a view

Sheraton Oran Hotel & Towers

The Le Ciel D’Oran Restaurant in the Sheraton Oran Hotel & Towers is famous for its exceptional evening views of the city. The seafood served at the restaurant is also very good and combined, makes for a great night.

Le Méridien Oran Hotel & Convention Centre also boasts a restaurant that offers magnificent views of the Mediterranean Sea. It also has a cosy lounge where guests and non-guests can enjoy a cocktail while taking in the beautiful views of the sea.

6. Shop with the locals

Medina Jdida

The Medina Jdida area is the commercial hub of Oran and is known today as the market neighbourhood. In the past, this area of the city was designed to house the black population.

Marche Medina Jedida is a massive market that sells everything from flowers to souvenirs. It is the best place for tourists to head to for bargain clothing, textiles, jewellery and other souvenirs.

Bargaining is a must when shopping here, as is minding your purse. Pickpocketing is a regular occurrence, but it should not discourage you from coming here.

7. Sample street food

Vendors

Medina Jdida is also a great area for sampling street food. Vendors set up all over the area, selling figs, fruit and various sandwiches.

No trip to Oran is complete without tasting kerentica, which is a specialty of the city. Kerentica is a cake made from chickpea flower and eggs.

8. Learn about the city

The Ahmed Zabana National Museum

The Ahmed Zabana National Museum was named after Algerian national hero Ahmed Zabana. The museum is housed in a lovely building on Boulevard Zabana.

There are two-levels at the museum, with the first showing the story of Algeria’s struggle for independence. The second level holds archaeological discoveries, ancient artworks and sculptures.

9. Head to the beach

Ain el-Turck

Around 15 kilometres outside of Oran is the seaside resort area of Ain el-Turck. The area itself was named after the beach, which is a major draw for tourists.

Ain el-Turck means ‘Fountain of the Turks’, though in the past this coastal town was called El Eurfa. It was then the home of a plethora of nomadic people who sold their goods at the city’s port.

Today, the strip is lined with accommodations, cafés and restaurants that cater to tourists. It also has a few great attractions, like Saint Roch, Bouisseville and Trouville.

10. Go bird watching

The Sebkha of Oran

The Sebkha of Oran is a saltwater lake that sits northwest of Oran. The lake is listed as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area by Birdlife International.

Bird watchers should not miss out the opportunity to visit the lake. Migratory birds that call the lake home include the flamingo and shelduck.

The lake is also a Ramsar site, being surrounded by eucalyptus, aleppo pine and cork oak forests.

11. Breathe in the fresh air

Foret de Msila

The 1,560 hectare Foret de Msila is just west of Oran on the hills of Boutlélis. It is a lovely forest that is known for its recreational activities.

Cyclists, joggers and walkers will truly enjoy the pathways throughout the forest, where they can breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The majority of the forest is cork oak and aleppo pine trees.

Foret de Msila is a protected forest that does its best to provide Oran with an eco-friendly tourist site.

12. Watch the boats

Oran Port

Oran’s main port is one of the most important in the country. It is a great place for boat lovers to watch freighters, cruise ships and private shops coming in and out of the country.

Ferries arrive regularly from Sète, Alicante, Marseilles and Almería. Some of these are passenger and car ferries, so you can easily get on one of these boats and head on a Mediterranean adventure.

13. Party until the late hours of the night

La Corniche

Oran has a thriving nightlife scene that is sure to please any night owl. In fact, it is the centre of Algeria’s nightlife.

La Corniche, which runs along the seafront, is Oran’s main partying strip. You will find plenty of bars, lounges and nightclubs along this stretch that cater to all types of clientele.

The poshest nightclubs and lounges are located within the luxury hotels, like the Sheraton Hotel, but you don’t have to be a hotel guest to enjoy them.

14. Get pampered in a spa

Four Points by Sheraton Oran

Oran is not known as a spa city, although it does have some great spas that will pamper you. Spend an afternoon getting a massage, soaking in a Jacuzzi or releasing toxins in a steam room.

Some of the best spas in the city are in the top-end hotels, like the Royal Hotel Oran – MGallery Collection and the Four Points by Sheraton Oran. There are also a few independent spas in the city that offer a variety of spa services.

15. Enjoy beautiful scenery

Madagh

Madagh 1 and Madagh 2 are two beaches in a cove just west of the city centre. They are known for their exceptional scenery and make for a great day trip.

The two beaches are separated by a stream and boast a backdrop of a lush green forest and mountains. It is a fantastic place to take some stunning holiday photos.

During the summer months, the beaches can get quite busy, especially on the weekends, as locals also enjoy coming here to escape the city.

Travel Guide of Oran Algeria – 11 Best Things to Do

Oran is one of Algeria’s largest and most significant cities.

Founded by Moorish Andalusian traders around AD 937, its history has been influenced by the Ottomans, Byzantines, Romans, Spanish & French, and Arabs to name just a few.

This coastal city has relaxed, yet vibrant energy, and the colonial architecture here is stunning. Explore a little further, and the crumbling buildings of Oran’s Sidi El Houari and Derb neighbourhoods will leave you bedazzled.

Oran was part of the Spanish Empire from 1509 until 1708, it was also ruled by the Ottomans and French.

Their influence can be seen in the architecture and structures monopolising the cityscape.

Getting To Oran Algeria

We flew to Oran from Marseille in France with Volotea, we reserved tickets online using our go-to flight booking website, Skyscanner .

Oran is well-connected via Ahmed Ben Bella International Airport and easily accessible by trains from cities like Algiers, Bechar, and Tlemcen in Algeria.

There are options to reach Oran, Algeria, by ferry from France or Spain. Cities worth checking ferry fares are Marseille, Almeria, and Alicante.

Currency in Oran, Algeria

At the time of our visit, (March 2022), t he official rate to exchange 1 EUR = 147 DZD.

The black market rate of exchange was 1 EUR = 215 DZD. As you can see, the black market rate is considerably better.

All prices in this blog are based on the black market rates.

Transport Options from Oran Airport to the City

The airport is 15 km from the city. The easiest, quickest way to reach your hotel is by taxi. A ride from the airport should cost between 1000-1500 DZD, depending on the time of your arrival. If you arrive on an evening flight, the price will be slightly higher.

Tip:   The moment you arrive in Algeria, get a SIM card. Then, download the Yassir ride-sharing App. Use Yassir to book a taxi upon arrival at Oran airport. It’s easy and reliable, and you can see the price of the ride before you book it. Keep smaller notes and coins to pay your driver after completing your ride .

You can also take a shuttle bus to the tram station, Es Sénia Terminus. The shuttle runs every 30 minutes to 60 minutes, and you can buy a ticket on the bus. The single ticket price is 40 DZD. From Es Sénia Terminus, take the tram to the city centre – Place du 1er Novembre. Again, the ride is 40 DZD.

Please Note: The shuttle bus operates between 07:30 to 17:30.

Good to Know: When you leave Oran, a Yassir ride to the airport from the city centre is cheaper, expect to pay around 600-700 DZD.

Cash is King in Oran

best things to do in oran algeria pay cash

Algeria is a ‘cash’ type of society. If you want to save at least 30% on everything you buy inside this country, I’d recommend bringing enough Euros or USD in cash to change on the black market. The official rate to change cash in the bank is 1 EUR = 147 DZD.

However , the black market rate was 1 EUR = 215 DZD. This is a significant difference, and you will certainly save loads of cash.

Be careful when changing your currency, as it’s not entirely legal. Try and do it out of the view of others if possible. You can find guys on the streets with bundles of cash to exchange or in the back office of ‘shops’ that appear to be selling souvenirs etc.

The best place to change cash is the ‘Marche de la Bastille’. Ask the locals where you can exchange euros or dollars, and they will point you in the right direction.

Getting Around in Oran Algeria

Walk: Oran is a great city to explore on foot. Be sure to visit the gorgeous Boulevard Soummam to view some beautiful architecture.

Public transport:  Oran has a reliable tram system that extends through the city. A single ticket price is 40 DZD. We chose to use the Yassir taxi in Oran, a short ride (between our IBIS Hotel and Centreville, approximately 3-4 km costs a flat rate of 200 DZD).

We found the convenience and affordability of Yassir beneficial during our entire trip to Algeria.

Where to Stay In Oran

best things to do in oran algeria Ibis Hotel

Some significant areas to stay in Oran are around Batna , Boulevard Soummam in the city, or Rue Khmisti if you prefer to be closer to the beaches of Oran.

We stayed at IBIS H otel , approximately 3.5km from the city centre. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the price was 9000 DZD (approx 42 EUR) per night for two people. The price for a single room is only 500 DZD less.

This price is based on paying cash at the black market rate. At the time of our visit (March 2022), the rate was 1 EUR = 215 DZD.

When you search all hotels in Oran on Booking.com and other hotel booking websites for hotels in Algeria, the search will give you very few options. But once you arrive in Oran, Algeria, or other cities, you can find many hotels at a much cheaper price, such as the one I suggested below.

For a better-valued hotel in the Batna area in Oran, I recommend Hotel Timgad. Rooms are clean and comfortable, and the hotel is in a fantastic location amongst some beautiful buildings just outside.

Rates are 4800 DZD for a standard double room (2 people), including breakfast.

Email them for a reservation at  [email protected] or call them at 00213 (0) 41 36 15 01/11/14 .

Are you craving a little more comfort? For a very comfortable stay in Oran, Algeria, I recommend staying at Four Points Sheraton or Le Meredien Oran Hotel.

11 Best Things to Do in Oran, Algeria

1) walk along front de mer.

things to do in oran algeria front de mar

One of the most beautiful walks you can take in the city of Oran is along the Front de Mer or seafront boulevard. Overlooking the port, it offers nearly 2km of a palm tree-lined boulevard with sea views on one side and a mix of captivating buildings, boutique shops, and ice cream parlours on the other.

You will also see the famous Santa Cruz Chapel and Fort of Santa Cruz straddled the mountains in the distance.

2) Marché de la Bastille and Mdina Jdida Market

You will soon discover that markets are an essential part of Algerian culture. Algerians shop daily for fresh meat from the butcher stalls and fresh produce from market vendors. The markets are also a meeting place for locals to meet and shop together or catch up over a mint tea on the street or even a game of dominoes on the corner.

The markets have the freshest produce

If you’re after an experience and some of the freshest fruit and vegetables I’ve seen for quite some time, head to Marché de la Bastille or Mdina Jdida market. The produce usually has prices per kg for food, so you don’t need to haggle over the price to pay for a few oranges or a punnet of strawberries.

I appreciate this when travelling, especially if your French or Arabic language skills are not so good. In saying that, the locals will greatly appreciate a smile, hello, and thank you in these languages .

Don’t miss the street food in Medina Jdida. Vendors set up in this market selling fruit, cakes, and various sandwiches.

Keep your eye out for a sandwich called Karantica. It’s simple, cheap, and tasty.

3) Eat the best Chicken Shawarma Sandwich in Oran

best things to do in oran algeria eat schwarma

Need a quick bite while you’re out exploring Oran? Stop by 31 Rue Larbi Ben M’hidi for the best poulet shawarma (chicken sandwich) you’ve ever eaten.

If you have the time, this is a super clean eatery to sit down and enjoy a super affordable meal , or order your shawarma and eat on the go. You can’t miss the large turning chicken meat grilling at the front of the shop.

Delicious chicken shawarma is 200 DZD (that’s less than $1) and is loaded with yummy marinated and grilled chicken, chips, and the best sauce ever!

If you like it spicy, ask the guys for a bit of harissa (chilli sauce) inside your sandwich. It is highly recommended.

4) Visit Oran Library

things to do in oran algeria Sacré Coeur

Built in the early 1900s as a Catholic cathedral, Sacré Coeur was converted into a library after independence. The building is a good example of Byzantine architecture, I highly recommend a visit.

5) Fortaleza de Santa Cruz

The fort of Santa Cruz is one of the most recognised landmarks in Oran. It is visible from just about every crossroad of the city. Sitting high on top of the mountains, the Spanish built the fort in the 16th century after defeating the Ottomans.

I’d recommend taking a Yassir taxi to the top. We paid 280 DZD ($1.45). The views are fantastic!

The entry fee to Santa Cruz Fort is 160 DZD (0.83c)

6) Santa Cruz Chapel

best things to do in oran algeria Santa Cruz Chapel

The French built this chapel in 1850 during the outbreak of Cholera that took the lives of thousands of people in Oran. The chapel is situated just below the fort.

The unmissable statue of the Virgin Mary that stands atop the chapel with her arms open wide was set there to guard the city against the pandemic. There is no fee to visit the chapel. The views of Oran from this perspective are magnificent.

7) Eat lunch at Cintra Restaurant

One of Oran’s oldest restaurants, Cintra Restaurant has enticed several well-known artists, historical figures, and writers.

The restaurant serves Mediterranean cuisine, and it’s one of the few places where you can enjoy a beer or a glass of wine in Oran, Algeria. This restaurant is near one of my favourite streets in Oran, the stunning Boulevard Soummam- I love the architecture on this street.

8) Place d’Armes

The Place du 1er Novembre, also known as the Place d’Armes, is the central hub of Oran. The square is easy to find, and an obelisk stands in the centre of the square .

It includes a portrait of Emir Abdel Kader- one of the country’s greatest anti-colonial leaders and topped by a statue called La Gloire. Place d’Armes is famous for landmarks that include the Opera House and Hotel de Ville and its impressive statues of lions.

9) Stop for coffee and enjoy the views

best things to do in oran algeria coffee

Take a break from exploring this gorgeous city and enjoy a coffee at Le Petit Royal Coffee , a cute little cafe overlooking Boulevard Soumman.

10) Explore the Old Town of Sidi El Houari

The old town of Sidi El Houari is equal to what the Casbah is in Algiers. Home to many landmarks and historic buildings, the crumbling architecture here has unfortunately not received any restoration or efforts to preserve this landmark district.

The entire Sidi el Houari district overlooks the sea, as it is built along the Aïdour and Wadi Rhi slopes. It’s worth catching a taxi here to wander the streets and uncover what real life is like for its residents.

The seaside resort area of Ain el-Turck is 15 km outside Oran city centre . The area was named after the beach, a significant draw for visitors to Oran.

Sure, it’s a little touristy over this side of town, and the strip is lined with cafés, restaurants, and hotels that cater to tourists – but if you’ve been craving some beach time , you can find it here.

BEST THINGS TO DO IN ORAN ALGERIA

Oran is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Algeria . A wonderful coastal city featuring a bustling mix of Moroccan influences, French heritage, Mediterranean vibes, and modern standards. There’s lots of great things to do in Oran Algeria, and you’ll find them all on this post. Keep it handy as it contains all the essential Oran attractions to make the most of your trip to Oran.

Things to do in Oran Algeria

With over 800,000 inhabitants, Oran makes Algeria’s second largest city. And with a metropolitan area hosting 1.5 million residents, the city is a proper cultural, commercial and industrial hub. It stands 420km from Algiers, 220km from Morocco , and 200km off the Spanish coast.

The highlights of Oran sightseeing include French architecture, long boulevards overlooking the sea, fortresses and mosques within a maze of ancient streets, and delicious cuisine. All followed by the best nightlife in the country. The following are the best things to do in Oran city Algeria.

Historical things to do in Oran Algeria

1. admire the architecture of place 1 november.

Place 1 November is Oran’s main square and one of the liveliest places in town. Many major roads converge in this historical square so it’s always busy. The place is home to many pathways, restaurants, cafes, and some of the best architecture in town.

Things to do in Oran Algeria

Pay special attention to the town hall, or Hotel de Ville in French. This 19th century building is surrounded by a nice fountain, an obelisk, and lion statues. Along with the Opera House, which is the largest of its kind in Africa.

Its baroque interiors, red curtains, and comfy seats accommodating over 600 people are my brightest memories of Oran, as I got to dance at the opera house during my first visit to Oran in 2010. If you’d like to check it out, attend a show at the Opera or join a guided tour of Oran .

2. Explore Sidi district

Sidi is Oran’s oldest district and thus one of the best places to visit in Oran. The area was built on a hill overlooking the Mediterraneanand hosts endless historical buildings. Later on, it was fortified by the Spanish, expanded by the Ottoman, and modernised by the French.

Things to do in Oran Algeria

Thus, Sidi is home to many Oran landmarks such as the Turkish baths, Saint-Louis Church, the hospital Baudens, Square de la Perle, and Boutin Tunel. Consider hiring a local guide to explore the hidden corners of Sidi and uncover all of its secrets.

And make sure to admire the Spanish Gate which is the best preserved remnant of the city’s Spanish times. Along with Bey Palace, an 13th century building featuring a haram, some old barracks, towers, and wonderful decorations. Finally, explore Pasha Mosque, an 18th century building with wonderful mosaics and one of the nicest minarets in all of Algeria.

3. Visit a cathedral turned into a library

In 1903 the French built the Cathedral of the Sacre Coeur d’Oran, the first of its kind overseas. However, this catholic landmark lost its main purpose following the countries independence. Thus, in the 1930s it was converted into a library and has hosted plenty of books ever since.

Things to do in Oran Algeria

Consequently, visiting this ancient byzantine church turned into a library is one of the best things to do in Oran Algeria. And probably one of the most unusual ones as well. The place is open Saturday to Thursday from 9.30am to 5.30pm. And it’s free to visit, so make sure to drop by.

Besides many books in Arabic, French and English, you’ll find a cultural and heritage center, a cafe, and a quiet place to relax within Oran.

4. Hike to Fort Santa Cruz

One of the best things to do in Oran Algeria is admiring the city from above. And there’s no better place to do so than Fort Santa Cruz. This stands at about 400 metres above sea level, at the top of Mount Murdjadjo.

Things to do in Oran Algeria

This 16th century Fort was built by the Spanish upon defeating the Ottoman. And it soon became an icon of the city, as it’s visible from almost every corner of Oran. The fort features a castle, a chapel, and a large statue of Virgin Mary replicating the one in Marsella.

The fort is open daily from 10am to 7pm and the entrance fee is about $1. The nearby chapel is free to visit and makes one of the coolest viewpoints in Oran, so make sure to enjoy it.

5. Take a walk along the Corniche

Oran’s corcniche is a great place to walk, shop, eat, and relax. It features many restaurants, cafes, benches, and palm trees everyone will find their spot here. So get ready to people watch, chat with locals, take photos, breathe warm air, and feel the sunshine.

There’s no better place, day or night, to feel the real vibe of Oran than its corniche. Somehow like those in Baku Azerbaijan or Beirut in Lebanon.

oran tourism

Additionally, make sure to walk by Oran’s corniche and spot the fancy yachts at the port. Along with the many freighters, ferries, and cruise ships coming from Spain and France.

Fun things to do in Oran Algeria

6. sample local food.

Food in Northern Africa is amazing so eating your way through the city is one of the best things to do in Oran Algeria. Although Algeria’s cuisine is not as famous as Morocco’s, local dishes in Algeria are at least as good as those in Morocco . And perhaps more affordable.

oran tourism

Must-try Algerian recipes include cous-cous, shakshouka, karentica, rechta, dobara, harira, msemen, kesra, and burek . Some of the best restaurants to sample the same are Khayma Beni Chougrane, El Bey, Restaurant Arabesque Oran, and Restaurant Marrakech.

Additionally, those looking for a fancy dining experience in Algeria should check out Le Ciel D’Oran at the Sheraton Hotel and the restaurant at Le Méridien Oran Hotel.

7. Shop at the markets

Visiting a local market is one of my favourite things to do in every city, and Oran is no exception to this rule. Local markets are great for people watching, tasting local goodies, and provide endless photo opportunities.

This port metropolis is nestled at the bottom of a bay open to the north and overlooked by the mountain of Aïdour. Founded in the 10th century by the Andalusians, it has witnessed a succession of Arab-Berber dynasties and experienced Spanish occupation before being reconquered and becoming the second city in the country under French colonization.

Following the independence acquired by the Algerian nation in the middle of the last century, Oran nevertheless remains the economic capital of the West of the country and a leading economic center in North Africa. Moreover, it possesses numerous assets that capture the interest of potential visitors who wish to explore and immerse themselves in this city at the confluence of diverse cultures. Oran is, above all, a captivating contrast: an urban and trendy metropolis boasting an impressive list of monuments, cultural sites, and heritage spots that are a pleasure to behold.

The Aïdour is a 430-meter hill that provides a commanding view of the city of Oran. Throughout history, it has held significant strategic importance, which led to the construction of the Santa Cruz Fort atop the hill. Visitors have the opportunity to explore the hill by walking along its many paths, each offering a unique perspective of the bay, and can also discover the fort with the assistance of a guide. It is a major attraction for those seeking things to do in Oran, providing a captivating historical and scenic experience.

Hassan Pasha Mosque, Oran

The mosque, built by bey Mohamed El-Kébir in the late 18th century, is a splendid example of Islamic architecture. Its cone-shaped minaret, adorned with Ottoman-style earthenware, makes it visible from a distance. Situated on the right bank of the Rhi wadi, in the Sidi El-Houari district, visits to the mosque are conducted in the morning, except on Fridays. Exploring the mosque allows visitors to marvel at the remarkable crescent-shaped interior courtyard and the intricate walls adorned with oriental-inspired geometric patterns. Discover the region: Oran

Tourism experts have ranked Algeria as the world's highest potential adventure travel destination for the decade. Here's what you can discover on your next trip...

oran tourism

Spread across more than 2.3 million square kilometres, Algeria is the largest country in the African continent. While close to 90 per cent of its area remains engulfed by the Sahara desert (the region's biggest draw), the rest of the country still offers immense potential, with intrepid backpackers and world travellers now increasingly making their way to this extraordinary land.

Just a short hop from Europe and the Middle East, the northern terrain boasts snow-flecked mountains, a stunning Mediterranean coastline and some of the most charismatic cities. Among them is Oran, which is one of Algeria's largest and most significant towns, and is known for its incredible charm. It retains the relaxed vibe of the Med, with a sun-drenched coast, while still remaining firmly rooted in its past – a fact evident in its grand monuments and architectural wonders.

Steeped in history

The word Oran comes from"wahran" in Arabic, which means two lions and evokes the legend of the last two lions that were hunted on the Djebel Kar mountain near Oran. A lasting reminder of this heritage are the two lion statues that guard its city hall. According to the analogy, the wild animals that lived in the area thousands of years ago kept approaching the suburbs, just like the invasions Oran was subjected to over the centuries. And it was these invasions that resulted in a mingling of cultures in the city.

While Oran was founded by Moorish Andalusian traders around 937 AD, its history has been influenced by the Ottomans, Byzantines, Romans, Spanish, French and Arabs. Traces of each of these cultures can, therefore, be found everywhere, in its architecture and especially in its food.

Explore on foot

The city of Oran is best explored on foot and one of the most beautiful walks you can take is along the seafront boulevard – Front de Mer. Stretching across two kilometres, it overlooks the port, offering views of the sea on one side and captivating buildings on the other. In the distance, you will be able to view the famous Santa Cruz Chapel and Fort of Santa Cruz straddling the mountains.

A short walk from the waterfront is one of the city's most loved landmarks. The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart was built in the early 1900s but was converted into a public library after the country's independence in the 1960s. The building remains a fine example of Byzantine architecture and is a must-visit when in the city.

oran tourism

A few steps away from the library lies the Place du 1er Novembre, also known as the Place d’Armes. The central hub of Oran and the historic heart of the city, it bears an obelisk that was inaugurated in 1898 in honour of the hundred men of the French army who died in combat during the famous battle of Sidi Brahim in 1845 against several thousand horsemen of the emir Abdelkader. However, when France repatriated the bronze statue at the base of the obelisk after the country's independence, the local Algerian authorities modified the structure and added a bust of the emir topped by a statue called the Glory Obelisk.

More to explore

For brilliant views over the entire city of Oran, take a taxi to the top of Fort of Santa Cruz. One of the most recognised landmarks in the city, it sits high on the top of the mountains and was built in the 16th century by the Spanish after they defeated the Ottomans. Just below the fort is the chapel of Santa Cruz, which was built in 1850 by the French during the cholera outbreak in the city.
