Once Upon a Time in a Western

Far and away (1992).

Far and Away (1992) poster

Spurred on by Danty Duff, an old friend of his father’s, Joseph sets out to even the score with landlord Daniel Christie (Robert Prosky). Duff even provides Joseph with an antique rifle.

But the first member of the Christie family Joseph meets is the landlord’s daughter Shannon Christie (Nicole Kidman). Spooked by his presence in their stables, Shannon stabs Joseph with a pitchfork, then rushes to her father for help.

When Joseph staggers out of the stable, still intent on killing Daniel Christie, the gun explodes in his face. Instead of assassin, he winds up being a patient in the Christie home, a commoner to be mended so he can hang later.

But Shannon, bored with the life of an upper class young woman, yearning for “modern” America, decides Joseph could be useful. She’s planning to run away to America, where land is going to be given away for free in the Oklahoma Land Rush.

But she can’t without a male escort. Joseph, she decides, could be her escort and her servant boy.

So off they go. They land in Boston, and quickly learn their destination is still 1,000 miles away and getting there won’t be easy.

Posing as brother and sister, they grow closer and finds their roles reversed. Joseph begins to make decent money as a prize-fighter. Shannon winds up plucking chickens for pennies in a factory.

A tragic turn causes them to part. Shannon winds up back with her parents, who have traveled to Boston to find her. Stephen Chase (Thomas Gibson) has also followed Shannon to America, planning to refindle a union arranged back in Ireland.

Joseph and Shannon are still determined to make it to Oklahoma Territory. Joseph, even more than Shannon, wants the freedom that comes with owning land of his own.

More adventure and romance than Western, considering our characters don’t land in the West until the final 40 minutes of the movie. But there’s an impressive recreation of the 1893 land rush, filmed with the help of 800 extras, 200 horses and 100 wagons.

And the film itself is more impressive than the mixed reviews it received at the time. How can you not find yourself rooting for Joseph Donnelly and Shannon Christie to suceed in their dreams? And to do so together?

Cruise and Kidman are front and center for the entire film. Little is required from the rest of the cast. Kidman also seems to be the focus in all the most memorable scenes.

There’s the pitchfork scene. There’s a scene in which the antique silver spoons she planned to use to finance her trip to Oklahoma are stolen. And there’s a delightful scene in which her mother, having undressed Joseph to mend his wounds, places a bowl over his crotch to protect her daughter’s innocence.

Curious, Shannon steals a peek under that bowl as soon as her mother leaves the room. Intrigued by what she’s seen, she can’t help but lift the bowl a second time. At which point, Joseph begins to stir. Horrified at the thought of being caught peeking, Shannon quickly tells him he’s dreaming.

Cruise and Kidman were husband and wife when this film was made. They had two children together before divorcing in 2001.

Joseph Donnelly: “I’ve only killed chickens and pigs until now.” Danty Duff: “He’s a pig and a chicken all in one, Daniel Christie. Here, now, give him a proper taste of death.”

Shannon Christie, running to her father for help after stabbing Joseph with a pitchfork: “Help, help. I’ve been almost raped. Almost slaughtered. In the stables. It’s the devil himself.”

Shannon Christie: “Boy, you said you wanted land. If that’s what you want, then come with me. … You’re brave. You shoot men. You step on their necks. When I saw that, I realized you could be very useful to me.” Joseph Donnelly: “Useful to you?” Shannon: “Yes, you could be my serving boy.”

Tom Cruise’s Only Western Is Old Fashioned Romance at Its Best

This old-fashioned romantic epic saw the actor share the screen for the second time with Nicole Kidman.

The Big Picture

  • Far and Away , starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, is a historical drama set during the turn of the century and explores the experiences of immigrants in America.
  • The film's finale, which depicts the Cherokee Outlet Land Rush of 1893, is a grand and thrilling sequence that showcases director Ron Howard's filmmaking prowess.
  • Despite its narrative and tonal shortcomings, Far and Away displays undeniable chemistry between Cruise and Kidman, and offers occasional resonant insights into societal hierarchies.

Throughout their relationship and marriage of more than 10 years, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman famously co-starred in three films. Having met and first worked together on Tony Scott 's Days of Thunder , the Hollywood power couple would conclude their professional partnership nine years later with Stanley Kubrick 's Eyes Wide Shut , a film that some speculate may have even played a part in the dissolution of their marriage. Between making those very divergent films, however, the co-stars-turned-spouses embarked on a different kind of venture with 1992's Far and Away .

Once described by director Ron Howard as Cruise and Kidman's "honeymoon project," the epic Western romance transports audiences back to the turn of the century as immigrants from around the world traveled to America in search of opportunity. Classical and old-fashioned in its sensibilities, it also remains Cruise's sole venture into the Western genre. Although Far and Away doesn't truly delve into Western territory until its final act , it delivers one of the most grand and thrilling finales in its director and stars' respective bodies of work. Weaving his characters through a historical tapestry of adventure and romance, Howard caps the film off with a bang and offers a glimpse into a formative era of collective aspiration and individual ambition.

Far and Away

A young Irish couple flee to the States, but subsequently struggle to obtain land and prosper freely.

What Is 'Far and Away' About?

Far and Away tells a tale of Irish lovers from widely divergent social backgrounds. A farmhand seeking to avenge his father and the destruction of his home, Joseph Donnelly (Tom Cruise) embarks on a mission to kill Daniel Christie ( Robert Prosky ), a greedy landowner enriching himself through unjustly high rents on tenants. When his pursuit of Christie backfires (literally), Joseph crosses paths with the landowner's daughter, Shannon (Nicole Kidman), an impetuous and stubborn young woman looking to dissociate from her privileged environment. Enticed by one another and the prospect of securing land in the Oklahoma Territory, they set sail across the Atlantic and settle in Boston.

Westerns Had an Unexpected Golden Age in This Decade

Fresh off the boat in America, Joseph and Shannon pass themselves off as brother and sister, with the former finding local celebrity as an amateur bare-knuckle boxer and the latter relegated to factory labor and burlesque. In the meantime, Shannon's wealthy parents are driven from their ivory tower by angry tenants, ultimately fleeing Ireland for America in search of their daughter. After a series of misfortunes, Joseph and Shannon are torn apart and head West with hopes of securing land. Reunited by mere chance in Oklahoma, they participate in the historic Cherokee Outlet Land Run of 1893 and ultimately claim their place in a new world.

Is 'Far and Away' Based On a True Story?

Historically based but fictional in nature , Ron Howard's film stemmed from an original story he conceived along with writer/producer Bob Dolman . As one of his only writing credits within a prolific career, Howard took inspiration from exploring his own heritage to dramatize the multifaceted experience of immigration to America at the turn of the century . In a retrospective discussion for the film's 30th anniversary, he revealed to Yahoo! Entertainment that " Far and Away really began probably when I was 6 years old, maybe 7, and I visited my great-grandmother in Kansas. And she pulled out of her drawer this newspaper and it was from the 1890s, and it was a photo for the Oklahoma land rush starting line. And she thought that her future husband was in the lead on a horse."

In drawing from a sweeping bit of American history , Howard and co-writer Dolman offer viewers a glimpse into a raucous time period in which cultures clashed like oil and water, with immigrants from all walks of life clamoring to keep themselves afloat amid a rapidly transforming and growing society. Regarding Far and Away 's romance, which derives from largely one-dimensional lead characters and often verges on something out of a teenage love story, Cruise and Kidman nonetheless display undeniable chemistry that transcends the film's narrative and tonal shortcomings. Spending much of their time squabbling over petty grievances, exchanging digs and jabs like two kids refusing to acknowledge they're crushing on each other, Joseph and Shannon's relationship harkens back to the screwball Hollywood romances of old. And while Howard and Dolman's screenplay doesn't shy away from superficial stereotypes, its occasional observations on societal hierarchies land with resonance. But for all of its historicity on a tangential level, it's the film's finale that drops audiences smack dab in the middle of a lesser-known corner of American history.

'Far and Away's Western-Based Final Act Is Its Best

At midday on September 16, 1893 , roughly 100,000 eagerly awaited their chance to claim land in present-day northwestern Oklahoma. Dubbed the Cherokee Outlet, the area comprised roughly 40,000 parcels and was yet another chunk of territory being carved up by the U.S. government after generations of inhabitancy by Native Americans. It would be the fourth and largest of five land rushes in the area over several years. After a starting gun sounded at noon, people on horseback, in wagons, and on foot stormed the frontier hoping to score a piece of the limited real estate. In Far and Away 's final half-hour, Joseph and Shannon find themselves front and center at the starting line of the Cherokee Outlet Land Rush, and it's in this ambitious recreation of American history that Ron Howard's film truly soars with spectacle, excitement, and a good old-fashioned sense of adventure.

Years before CGI became the norm for staging such sequences, evermore incentivizing filmmakers to rely on increasingly stale technology to populate their epic frames, Howard had no choice but to employ hundreds of stunt performers, extras, animals, and period-authentic props to bring the event to the screen. Of shooting the sequence , Howard remembers, "We had 750 people and horses lined up. We had 13 cameras, two in the air, cameras dug in everywhere." And several of those cameras were loaded with wide, high-resolution film, expanding on the scene's large-scale sense of grandeur and scope. According to Variety , Far and Away was "notable as the first narrative, non-effects-oriented Hollywood feature in more than two decades to have been shot on 65mm stock (with Panavision’s new Super 70 equipment) and released in 70 mm."

As the film's main characters finally converge at this historic moment, Far and Away earns its spurs as an exercise in Western filmmaking , with a game Cruise and Kidman deftly weaving through Howard's frame on horseback as the filmmaker's cameras sweep above and through the action. An Oklahoma native, Howard orchestrates one of the most logistically complex and thrilling sequences of his decades-long career behind the camera, and though Far and Away would come and go with a lukewarm reception from audiences and critics in 1992, it nevertheless remains an enduring and underrated effort on the part of its director and lead performers .

"Far and Away" is a movie that joins astonishing visual splendor with a story so simple-minded it seems intended for adolescents; watching it, I kept being reminded of the "Childhoods of Famous Americans" books, in which plucky young people made their way in life. It's depressing that such a lavish and expensive production, starring an important actor like Tom Cruise , could be devoted to such a shallow story. Do they think audiences have entirely lost their wits? The movie stars Cruise as Joseph, son of a poor working man in Ireland. When his father cannot pay the rent on the land, the family's home is burned down by goons working for the landlord.

Joseph vows vengeance and goes off to murder the man (and is bid a cheerful farewell by the entire village, so little does he conceal his intentions). But when he is discovered lurking in a stable and beaten to within an inch of his life by the sadistic overseer, he's taken into the landlord's mansion for treatment, and there he first becomes attracted to his rebellious, headstrong daughter Shannon, played by Nicole Kidman .

She is tired of being a proper, well-behaved young lady, and yearns to go to America, where she hears that land is being given away. Encountering Joseph by chance a little later in Dublin, she asks him to come along with her, and with nothing to lose, he does.

Their chance encounter is not an accident, but the basic strategy of the entire plot, which is a series of chance encounters. Perhaps that is because the story is so arbitrary and the characters so transparent that nothing that happens can be explained on any level higher than coincidence.

Of course, Joseph and Shannon travel as brother and sister.

It is an ancient convention of such story formulas that the young man and woman (who anyone can see are destined for one another) must go through a period of mutual antagonism before - hello! - they realize they're in love. Landing in Boston, they find lodgings in a brothel, and young Joseph goes to work as a bare-knuckle fighter, gaining some local acclaim. Why a brothel and not a boarding house? The movie is desperate for local color.

Why, you might ask in the same vein, does Joseph become a boxer, instead of some more likely occupation, such as a street-cleaner, a hod-carrier or a longshoreman? Because the movie hasn't a clue who these people are, or why we should find them intrinsically interesting, and so it cobbles together cliches out of old boxing movies to provide a third-hand narrative and manufactured suspense.

Here's the test you can always apply to a boxing scene: Is the most important thing about the fight who wins, or why the hero is boxing? In " Raging Bull " it was the latter - what drove him to such punishment. In "Far and Away," it's who wins - and of course the outcome of every fight is determined entirely by the needs of the story. We even get the exhausted cliche in which the hero is pounded to a pulp before suddenly he gets really angry, and pounds the other guy to a pulp.

Joseph and Shannon eventually light out for the Oklahoma Territory, while meanwhile, in a series of parallel developments much beloved in such classics of my childhood as the Hardy Boys adventures, Shannon's parents and the evil overseer (who considers Shannon his intended) also decide to emigrate to America, whereupon of course they also head for Oklahoma, so that all of the characters can be involved in the same land rush. Give us a break.

Shannon's father, played by that fine actor Robert Prosky , is such a mass of contradictions and character tics that it's hard to see if anybody's at home, especially in the ludicrous Oklahoma scenes. Shannon and Joseph are equally dimwitted characters, completely the victims of the story, denied all personality attributes except those routinely assigned to captives of genre fiction. Do they realize they have nothing intelligent, witty or unexpected to say in the entire movie? Do they care? Does the audience? Maybe not. The movie's payoff is an impressive, beautiful highangle shot of an Oklahoma land rush, with hundreds of horsemen, wagons and runners all tearing through the sagebrush in search of a desirable homesite.

(Shannon's parents cheat and are not caught, in what has become by this time the movie's low-comedy double act.) Of course the land rush looks great. "Far and Away" is the first movie in many years to be photographed in 70mm (rather than being blown up to 70 from 35mm). It looks great. See it, if you must, in a theater with good projection.

If the late David Lean had not died before he could shoot it, his own planned 70mm epic, "Nostromo," might have been arriving in theaters about now. It would have been a reminder of the literate, thoughtful tradition of such Lean films as " Doctor Zhivago " and " Lawrence of Arabia ." Remembering them and looking at this credulous boy's story, I am depressed. Are audiences thought not capable of seeing great pictures and listening to great dialogue at the same time? Are they so impatient they have to be thrown boxing scenes instead of character scenes? Is there any purpose to this movie other than visual spectacle?

‘By sponsoring coups in the Sahel, Russia has acquired a new hold on Europe: emigration’ (Le Monde)

There has been an increasingly obvious alignment with Russia undertaken by the military juntas that have taken power since 2020 in the French-speaking countries of the Sahel region, Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger. This has generally been analyzed in terms of the weakening of the West, the acquisition of diplomatic and military influence, and economic plundering for Moscow’s benefit. Yet there’s another dimension to this story that deserves close attention. By sponsoring the new strongmen of West Africa, Vladimir Putin’s Russia has acquired a new kind of hold on Western Europe: emigration.

In this respect, the landmark event which was the abrupt eviction of about a thousand American soldiers based in Agadez, Niger, ordered by General Abdourahamane Tiani’s junta in Niger on Saturday, March 16, cannot go unnoticed. The significance of the snub inflicted on the US by the country’s new ruler, in power since July 2023, by refusing to receive two senior officials from the Biden administration, was clear. Prior to the putsch that led to the departure of the French soldiers in December, Niger appeared to be the last country in the region willing to host Western troops. It was also one of the rare countries to collaborate with the European Union (EU) on controlling migratory flows. Niger is now one of Russia’s avowed allies.

Of course, young African people struggling with extreme poverty and a total lack of prospects don’t need the “hand of Moscow” to take to the road and head north by sea, as evidenced by the surge in arrivals in 2023 via Spain, Italy or Greece. Nor did Niger’s new authorities wait until the January announcement of the “intensification” of their military cooperation with Russia, to repeal in November 2023 the 2015 law penalizing the illegal trafficking of migrants, which had been adopted under pressure from the EU Since then, the oasis of Agadez, the Tuareg capital and a crossroads of migration routes, has regained its status as the center of profitable transactions linked to migratory crossings, which it had ceased to be since the 2015 law was passed. While this policy of reopening migration has reflected the new authorities’ desire to satisfy those Tuareg who are at odds with the junta, it also represents a challenge to the EU. READ MORE

Aerial footage showed King and Justin handcuffed and sitting on a patch of grass outside Diddy’s gate.

“Earlier today, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) New York executed law enforcement actions as part of an ongoing investigation, with assistance from HSI Los Angeles, HSI Miami, and our local law enforcement partners,” a rep for Homeland Security Investigations told Page Six. “We will provide further information as it becomes available.”

Diddy’s location was unclear at the time of the raid, though TMZ later reported he was spotted pacing outside the Miami airport while his private jet had touched down in the Caribbean nation of Antigua.

The raid came after Diddy was slapped with various lawsuits alleging sexual assault and human trafficking, all of which the Sean John designer has denied.

In February, music producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones sued the music mogul , claiming Diddy sexually assaulted him while working on the 2023 album “The Love Album: Off the Grid.” Jones also claimed the multi-hyphenate’s friendship with Prince Harry made Diddy more influential.

Jones also alleged he was forced to perform inappropriate acts with sex workers at Combs’ request, claiming he once woke up drugged and in bed with his boss.

Combs’ attorney, Shawn Holley, told Page Six at the time that “Lil Rod is nothing more than a liar” seeking to “shamelessly” win the $30 million lawsuit.

Months prior, “Me & U” singer Cassie sued her ex Diddy for rape and abuse , but she and the father of seven settled the lawsuit within a few days.

“We will always support law enforcement when it seeks to prosecute those that have violated the law,” Cassie’s attorney told Page Six in a statement after Monday’s raid.

“Hopefully, this is the beginning of a process that will hold Mr. Combs responsible for his depraved conduct.”

Within weeks of settling with Cassie, three women  hit Diddy with additional lawsuits  claiming sexual assault.

One unnamed accuser also claimed the “Bad Boy for Life” rapper gang-raped her when she was 17, but he quickly denied the allegation.

“Let me be absolutely clear: I did not do any of the awful things being alleged,” he wrote on social media. “I will fight for my name, my family and for the truth.”
