Travel’s come a long way, baby. 2023 marks the 265th anniversary of the first travel agency, Cox and Kings—the tour operator company, specializing in escorted global tours, which was founded in 1758 in India.

Since then, the travel agency industry has hit some turbulence through the years and has also taken off in many directions.

Luxury/adventure tour operator Abercrombie & Kent UK acquired Cox & Kings UK in 2019. Note: These are the UK and not the American branches of both companies—Abercrombie & Kent UK is operated separately from Abercrombie & Kent USA and their markets and styles of operation are distinct, though both are owned by the same holding company, the Abercrombie & Kent Group. As a result of the A&K purchase, Cox & Kings maintains its status as the oldest surviving tour operator in the world.

A&K debuted 60 years ago in 1962, founded by Geoffrey Kent and his parents. Over the past six decades, the company has charted an innovative course and has become the world’s largest luxury travel company specializing in safari adventures with travel and tour operations offered in one-hundred-plus countries on all seven continents, with support 24/7 from a network of more than 55 offices.

Just a couple of decades ago, technology was predicted to be the kiss of death for travel agencies but in reality, has become the chef’s kiss. Thanks to the Internet, clients are more educated about what they want and where making the travel advisor’s job easier in many cases. Also, the dizzying amount of information on the internet highway can become so overwhelming and confusing that many clients are, once again, hitchhiking a ride with a savvy travel advisor rather than go it alone.

And, the advancement of technology has revealed another unexpected twist in travel in recent years, especially since the pandemic. While we are connected, we are actually more disconnected than in the past, says A&K’s Kent.

“In our 24/7 world, we live in a state of paradox—so many of us feel we need to be connected, to have constant wi-fi access, yet we crave the peace of a digital detox,” he says. “There is so much appeal to being unplugged in places like Africa or Antarctica. One of the greatest luxuries today is silence.”

And those long moments without gadgets leave space for creativity and true connection for families and friends, says Kent, something that only truly happens in remote places. “Our team in Morocco worked hard to design handcrafted caidale-style tents for our desert camp—like those once used at palaces to welcome guests—it is the silence of the desert that guests remember much more than the luxury.”

Through the years, time has also become the ultimate luxury, says Kent. Many of A&K’s guests have worked their entire lives and raised a family and have finally retired comfortably or they are still doing both but need a break, he says, “but they don’t have forever to explore the world.”

They’re also planning bigger, more rewarding trips to celebrate missed milestones and to reconnect with family and friends.

“Go big is the sentiment of the day,” says A&K’s Stefanie Schmudde, VP Product Development and Operations. “Most people have lost two years working on their travel bucket list. In fact, she says, groups of family and friends are up by 25% compared to 2019.

There’s a very strong demand for African safaris, says Schmudde. “Safaris were the original form of experiential travel, the kind of travel that challenges your understanding of the world,” she says.

And, demand for Europe has also been strong for both small group and tailor-made travel, especially to Italy, France, Greece, Spain, and the UK, says Schmudde. As well as growing interest in India, Vietnam and Angkor Wat. And Japan continues to be the most requested destination in Asia.

Also trending: Trips are longer, says Schmudde. And guests are splurging.

“A&K’s journeys worldwide by private jet sold out quickly and we are seeing unprecedented demand for our regional Wings Over the World itineraries featuring private air,” says Schmudde.

And expedition cruising is leading the return to cruising. “The very elements that define it—remote destinations, small ships, outdoor adventures and a focus on learning—closely align with what travelers value most right now,” says Schmudde.

In fact, Abercrombie & Kent has expanded its portfolio of expedition cruises to all seven continents with two new itineraries that emphasize adventure, one that begins in Africa and the other from French Polynesia to Easter Island.

“These voyages focus on observing wildlife and exploring places of historic significance in small groups led by highly-experienced guides,” says Schmudde. For example, itineraries include learning about the conservation efforts that have preserved 152,000 giant tortoises in Aldabra Atoll, as well as an opportunity to trace the history of the HMS ‘Bounty’ voyage through French Polynesia. In 2023 and 2024, several new itineraries will be offered, including Cruising the Seychelles & Coastal Tanzania.

Community and sustainability are travel buzzwords for 2023 and beyond. And travelers and travel agencies are embracing the idea of making a difference in the world.

Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy delivered more than $2 million dollars in emergency relief and medical supplies to people whose livelihoods depend on wildlife and heritage tourism, says Schmudde. “It continues to support community partners making a difference in education, health care, conservation, and enterprise development with more than 40 projects impacting the lives of 125,000 men, women and children across the globe.”

No effort made to bring the group together

I went on a tour of the Baltic States with them. Whilst the logistics were seamless, and the sites visited beautiful, very little was done to bring the group together and this was regrettable. It took me five days to find out the name of one participant and we were only a dozen people on the tour. There was no welcome drink the first evening, no introductions were made. The first official tour day we had an afternoon of “free time” followed by a full free day the next day, meaning that as a solo traveler, I was on my own most of the first 48 hours! We also had a new guide in each of the three countries we visited, in effect changing guides every 1 to 2 days, so again, we didn’t really get a chance to become acquainted with our guides. More could have been done to bring the group together and it would have been nice to have one tour coordinator for the whole trip.

Matthew and Max did an excellent job

Matthew Rees and Max Hogben did an excellent job. There had been an initial confusion whereby we had been identified as requiring disabled facilities. Matthew sorted this out. They arranged the superior room upgrades and the tour extension. They listened to us, rather than making assumptions, and then tailored the holiday to our requirements. Excellent service, Thank you.

Spectacular Peru

Around every corner there was something amazing, we never ceased to be impressed! The itinerary was brilliant, everything ran like clockwork, the accommodation was sumptuous and the views spectacular! We will never forget it! Marco Serrano who was our guide for much of the trip was helpful, knowledgeable kind and encouraging, we were so lucky to have him ( and the others)

Our guide Mario was excellent

Our guide Mario was excellent. Extremely knowledgeable, caring and a really good communicator. First class. Our first hotel, Tenuta Centoporte (a 4*) hotel was 5* in all respects - peaceful, smiling and helpful staff, excellent breakfasts, very good restaurant for dinner, lovely pools - excellent in all respects. Our second hotel, by contrast (Tenuta Monacelle) was very disappointing and poor - bathroom smelt, shower fittings falling off the wall, extremely surly service at breakfast and dinner (except one dark-haired lady who was helpful), poor breakfast - e.g fruit not replaced when finished and the reluctant to refill - very poor food at dinner. Reception staff were friendly and helpful. Two nights extremely noisy at dinner as loud parties (incl karaoke) going on just above us. Could not wait to leave !! See my Tripadvisor review.

Interesting tour of Puglia

The tour itself was good and Mario the guide was excellent. Very pleasant with everyone and very knowledgeable. The excursions were good and fairly exclusive. Some in particular were not typical tourist trips but were much better. Although the hotels were of a good standard the location of them made it difficult to go anywhere out of the hotel. Given that only one dinner was included we expected to be able to walk to other restaurants but the hotels were so isolated it was not possible unless we organised taxis. We were forced to eat in the hotel which in the second hotel wasn’t a particularly good experience as they were seemingly understaffed and staff were trying to serve weddings and functions as well as other guests. Although dinner was included on the first night and we were asked if we had allergies a fish restaurant was not a good choice. Many people didn’t like fish certainly shellfish and Mario was then having to sort this out.

Well organised

Well organised, good itinerary, small group size, good specalist quides. But the resort was not up to standard as a resort and Hotel Stabia did not serve food after 3pm and breakfast was poor

Not overly impressed

Requested to book a tour with an upgrade to business class flights. The initial cost quoted was ridiculously expensive and much more than the airline was charging on their website. After querying this, the cost came down to what I expected. Some unsuspecting travellers may not realise they could be overcharged a significant amount. We booked and the tickets were issued, but Cox & Kings had spelt one surname incorrectly (and we were Mr & Mrs with the same name). One new ticket was reissued which meant we were now on two separate airline bookings (not automatically sitting together but check-in were helpful). The tour itself was generally good (hence the 3 stars) but the accommodation at one hotel - the Movenpick Resort & Spa at the Dead Sea in Jordan was woeful. Most of the guests on the tour were unhappy at the condition of their rooms and several of us complained to hotel staff.

Trustworthy, accommodating, and very caring. Competitively priced too!

We have used Cox and Kings 3 times now, once to design a tailored trip to South Africa, once going to Peru including the Belmont train, and we have now booked with Cox and Kings to go to Oman next year. Their holidays are always of high quality and competitively priced. Cox and Kings are always extremely helpful and accommodating. They care about their customers as we experienced in Peru when we almost missed our connection flight back; as they had heard of the delay they sent somebody to welcome us and rush us through the airport. The booking for Oman was not disappointing; they have accommodated and supported our tailoring with openness and were very helpful.

A memorable holiday to Cairo and the Nile

The Cairo and Nile cruise was fabulous, everything had been thought of in advance and it was all high quality, from accommodation to travel arrangements. Though there was little free time and many early get-ups, it was definitely a memorable and superbly organised trip. Only niggle was the information given to us about how much to tip- these seemed rather excessive, presuming the excellent guides/drivers etc are well paid by Cox&Kings. Must mention Ovidiu David, our London based co-ordinator from the first enquiries about the trip. He answered every question in detail and was attentive and professional in every aspect over the many months. Thank you Ovidiu.

Andalusia May 2024

The tour was well organised with hotels/buses etc all just as expected and advertised. The tour manager (Matthew) was well-informed, knew the country and was able to deal well with little issues as they arose. With only 5 days and much to see you have to accept that you can't see everything but the itinery covered all the main items and still allowed some free time for individual looking around. Gives me an incentive to go back with more time to see all that I missed.

The Splendours of Jordan tour

We had a fantastic time on the Splendours of Jordan tour. It’s a fascinating country. The accommodation was superb and the food wonderful. The trip was very well organised and our guide Mo was extremely knowledgeable, enthusiastic and friendly. The locals were friendly and we had no concerns about our safety at any stage. We were a bit surprised we did not visit any mosques considering we were touring a Moslem country. Also beware of mosquitoes in the desert! We would highly recommend this tour.

Jordan Experience - Excellent!

The Jordan trip was very enjoyable and overall had an excellent time. The 3 hotels were excellent quality with great food. The guide was very knowledgeable and the driver also excellent. We were only a group of 8 so maybe that helped. The only real criticism was that we didn't arrive at the Dead Sea resort until around 8pm due to leaving Wadi Rum later than planned and then for some reason taking a detour via Aqaba which served no purpose at all. We only had one full day at the Dead Sea resort as we left at 8:30 for the airport on the final day. Would have been nice to have an extra day at the Dead Sea for a bit of R&R. The Jordanian people were also most hospitable.

Grand Tour of South America

We have just returned from the Grand Tour of South America, small group tour, with Cox & Kings. What a fabulous experience. Everything worked like clockwork. All of the guides were very professional with excellent local knowledge and were very passionate about the history and culture of their respective countries. Special mention to Juan Carlos in Peru, Ivar in Bolivia and Gus in Iguazu. All of the hotels and experiences visited were first class, including the Andean Explorer train journey. All flights and tickets for attractions were seamlessly organised, with no hitches at all. We would definitely book a tour with Cox & Kings in the future. Thank you for a great holiday.

Hotel in Naples was pretty poor

Hotel in Naples was pretty poor. Firstly we were dropped off in a street near the hotel as the cab could not get up the road as it was too narrow, and we were told it was just up there. We walked about 5-600 hundred yards and could not find it so asked various people and we were sent in various directions until a butcher in a shop nearby told us where it was. Behind a gated complex and then through other gates up 50 stairs carrying our own suitcases we eventually find the door to reception. ( we are both over 70 ) not a good way to start a holiday. We contacted C & K whose answer was you never mentioned you had mobility issues to which the reply was we don’t and requested we were moved on to our next destination a day earlier than planned. This they did. But never contacted us to see if everything was ok. Pretty poor customer service.

The Guide was Excellent

On The Grand Tour of India our great guide Albhi gave us real insights into Indian cultural life. He also made the fact we were never anywhere more than 2 nights as easy as possible. He created a group dynamic that made the trip fun as well as fascinating. The only negative in 17 days was Ranthambore. Not because we didn't see a tiger but because we didn't really learn anything about the National Park because jeep/park guides didn't speak English and no additional guide gave us any insight. One of the jeep rides returning from the park nearly had a very dangerous millimeter close crash. All 6 other destinations were brilliant.

Excellent service from start to finish

Excellent service from start to finish. Very helpful staff who discussed concerns and explained things in great detail, . Holiday was amazing even though changes to itinerary had to be made because of the earthquake at short notice. Accommodation of the highest standard. Amazing local guide, nothing too much trouble for him.
