United Kingdom

The weather in the UK is always unpredictable, but when packing for Europe in winter you should definitely expect rain (and lots of it!) and potentially snow in some areas.

Whether you’re immersing yourself in the city of London , exploring the countryside in Wales , or experiencing the wonders in Scotland , the UK is a fantastic place to visit all year round, as there is plenty to see and do.

A waterproof jacket or trench coat is an absolute must for your winter vacation, and if you’re traveling around the country, it’s important to invest in one that is lightweight and folds away to fit easily in your carry-on bag.

Choose an insulated jacket or layer a packable down jacket underneath for the perfect travel combination.

Layering is the best way to battle the changing climates in Europe, and this is easily done by packing dark skinny jeans, a long-sleeve merino wool top, a sweater, and a jacket.

If you’re visiting London or other cities, a pair of waterproof leather ankle boots and warm wool socks are ideal. But if you’re planning on venturing out into the countryside, consider walking boots.

Don’t forget to throw in some winter accessories like gloves, a scarf, and a cute hat. These will keep you extra toasty and are a good way to add some extra color to your outfit. A small umbrella is the perfect accessory for hopping on and off trains or in and out of buildings.

Tip : Always keep an umbrella or hooded jacket with you! Rain can occur at any time.

The best thing about traveling to France in winter is being able to avoid all of the large crowds, allowing you to experience the Eiffel Tower or the Palace of Versailles without the long lines.

The weather varies depending on which part of France you’re visiting. (Read this packing guide for France.) The south is relatively mild, whereas northern cities are cold and wet. Keep an eye on the forecast before you go as it may also snow during your trip.

Most locals will be wearing a trench style coat as they’re both fashionable and practical, but remember to bring something more substantial if you expect to spend extended periods outdoors. When packing for Europe in winter, pick something dark to avoid it getting too dirty and lightweight so it packs easily into your suitcase.

To prepare for the cold weather, pack long-sleeve tops and sweaters, a pair of jeans or a skirt, and thick tights, and finish the look with an oversized scarf.

Like most European countries, France is filled with cobblestone streets, so comfortable footwear is an absolute must. Leather boots, waterproof brogues, or leather water-resistant sneakers would be ideal for looking stylish and feeling comfortable during your travels in France.

When in doubt, wear black. France is all about classic and minimal chic style. You can never go wrong with a combination of black, white, and grey with a touch of color. (Perhaps a red lipstick!)

Tip : The most recommended shoes for winter, fall, and spring are a pair of short black boots like these . Read this post to find shoe recommendations for other times of the year.

Layers are essential and you’ll need a mix of cool and warm clothes that you can easily strip off when needed like this Quince Mongolian Cashmere Sweater . When packing for Europe in winter, include a pair of dark skinny jeans, a long-sleeve shirt, and a lightweight sweater. If you’re heading up north, you’ll need a winter coat or quilted jacket to keep out the cold, as well as a scarf and gloves .

As cities like Milan can be snow covered in winter, it’s important to have a pair of sturdy boots that will keep your feet warm and dry. A pair of stylish leather ankle boots would be ideal for this climate, as long as they have a sturdy rubber sole on the base. If you plan on visiting the south as well, throw in a pair of lightweight sneakers like Supergas for those dry and sunny days.

Tip: Don’t forget your umbrella and sunglasses! Italy’s weather is quite diverse as you travel north and south.

Fashion in the Netherlands is practical and casual, consisting of mainly dark colors. Greece is better known as a summer vacation destination, as the different islands offer a range of beaches and delicious Greek food. A winter in Greece, however, can be just as enjoyable and a lot more authentic.

Travelon Anti Theft Cross Body Bag

Spain is a popular European destination due to its glistening coastlines; vast mountain ranges, fantastic food, and a blend of old traditions and modern cities. This country has so much to offer tourists at any time of the year, from indulging in tapas and paella to lazing on the beach to exploring palaces and castles.

Spain is definitely one of the more pleasant European countries to visit in winter, but that doesn’t mean you should expect sunbathing weather. The temperatures will vary depending on where you go, but from December through March, you should expect a mix of warm and cold days, with plenty of rain in the north.

Fashion in areas like Barcelona and Madrid is quite formal and dressy, whereas southern regions are relatively relaxed in their style. Make sure to check the weather forecast for each city because you might experience sun in one place and snow in the other. Read this guide on how to pack for trips with mixed weather.

Like most countries in Europe, layers are crucial for battling the volatile temperatures in Spain. Wear some dark jeans, a cute shirt, and lightweight jacket for when the weather is mild, and add an extra layer if the temperature starts to drop.

Another favorite for locals is to wear a long skirt and thick tights paired with a shirt and jacket. Most women will also be wearing a colorful scarf.

As for shoes, waterproof leather ankle boots are a must for winter in Spain, but make sure they have a solid grip on the soles as the streets are cobbled and steep, making them very slippery when wet.

If you’re going to mountainous regions, you’ll need to pack thermals , travel pants, a down jacket, gloves, a scarf, a hat, and comfortable hiking shoes .

Tip: Use a crossbody purse or anti-theft purse to secure your valuables against pickpockets. It’s also a great way to carry around a much needed umbrella .

Best Travel Clothes For Europe In Winter

by Melissa Giroux | Last updated Feb 25, 2023 | Europe , Travel Gear , Travel Tips

From visiting the famous Christmas markets to skiing in world-class resorts to seeing Santa in Lapland, Europe is a magical place to be in the winter.

If you’ve backpacked around the continent in the summer, visiting Europe in winter will offer a totally different experience. Thus, seeing Europe in this season is a must.

Ready To Travel? Don't Go Without Travel Insurance.

Check Prices

The weather in Europe can range from pretty chilly to freezing zero temperatures. Thus, you’ll need plenty of warm, insulated, thermal, and fleece-lined clothing.

But if you’re unsure what to wear in Europe during winter, fear not.

In this guide, we’ll list all the essential travel clothes for Europe in winter so you’ll jet off as prepared as can be.

Before we get into what to pack for Europe in winter, remember that the continent’s climate differs from country to country.

Suppose you’re planning a winter wonderland trip where you’ll ski on the slopes or ride through the thick snow in Lapland.

In that case, you’ll need warmer clothing than if you’re enjoying a city break in Barcelona in winter .

So, along with following the advice in this guide, research the typical winter climate of where you are heading.

Without further ado, let’s talk about European winter fashion .

woman traveling in germany in winter

When you start packing for Europe in winter, you’ll likely first think about oversized coats and cozy jumpers.

However, in the continent’s coldest parts, you’ll need multiple layers to stay warm.

Typically, you’ll wear a t-shirt, a long-sleeve top, a jumper, and a coat. So make sure you have enough short and long-sleeve tees for every day of your trip.

Of course, some days, the weather will be mild enough to omit the long sleeve layer.

Still, a general rule for surviving winter in Europe is that you can never have enough clothes!

If you particularly hate the cold or are going on a skiing vacation, include a few thermal base layers too.

This Smartwool Merino 250 Baselayer Crew is super effective at regulating body temperature.

Jumpers And Hoodies

Next up, pull out all the comfy jumpers and warm hoodies in your wardrobe, as you’ll be wearing these every day.

However, as styles of sweaters and cardigans vary, you’ll need to be sure the ones you are bringing are best suited to winter.

For example, knit jumpers with large gaps between the knitting or crochet styles won’t be sufficient to retain body heat.

The best type of winter jumper is made from wool or fleece, with lots of coverage around the neck, such as roll neck and turtle neck styles.

This Ailaile Wool Turtleneck Pullover is perfect for women, and this Aran Crafts Irish Soft Wool Cable Knitted Sweater is ideal for men.

We also recommend bringing a thermal hoodie, like this one from Geek Lighting . The heavyweight zip-up sweatshirt has a thick sherpa fleece lining on the body and hood.

Winter Coat

Every winter Europe trip calls for a good quality winter coat. However, there are various styles of coats, so which is best for winter traveling Europe?

The answer depends on where you’re going and what you’re doing.

Suppose you are exploring the city sights and Christmas markets. In that case, this Daily Ritual Teddy Bear Fleece Oversized-Fit Lapel Jacket will keep you feeling toasty in between each glass of mulled wine.

Or for men, this Calvin Klein Hooded RipStop Water and Wind Resistant Jacket is ideal. It is stylish and has an interior fleece bib with a zipper closure for extra warmth.

If you’re planning to take lots of walks and hikes, a long insulated coat like this one from Columbia is a great option.

It features faux down insulation, Omni-heat thermal reflective lining, and a water-resistant shell.

Those who don’t cope well with the cold might consider this TIDEWE Heated Jacket .

This coat is unique as it features an interior battery pack with 3 adjustable heat settings to instantly create additional warmth whenever needed.

In addition, the anti-static fleece liner traps the heat produced, and the exterior is water and wind-resistant, too.

man skiing in austria in winter

You likely won’t need to pack any shorts for your winter Europe trip.

However, you will need plenty of thick and warm long pants, like insulated leggings for women and fleece-lined tracksuit bottoms for men.

Jeans are also a popular piece of winter apparel in Europe. However, if you’re heading somewhere very chilly, like Sweden or Switzerland, you might need to wear a base layer.

Leggings can make a good base layer for women, and long johns serve the purpose for men.

If you want to dress up a bit for nights in the city, women can pair these VERO MONTE Opaque Warm Fleece Lined Tights with a winter dress and trench coat.

For men, wear some long johns under your favorite pair of chinos or smart trousers for an invisible warmth layer.

Sneakers and boots are the two primary footwear you will need for winter in Europe.

Many winter boots are suitable for both everyday walking and hiking. However, if you plan to do activities in the snow, you’ll need hiking boots with high traction to handle icy surfaces.

The SOREL Women’s Explorer II Joan Faux Fur Boots are super versatile, thanks to their suede and faux fur design.

Thus, you can wear them anywhere, from hiking trails to the high street.

They also have 100g insulation, are waterproof, and have a high-traction rubber EVA footbed.

If you’re not heading anywhere snowy or icy, you can opt for a more stylish city-style boot like these Dr. Martens .

The Chelsea-style leather boots have a fleece lining and the iconic Dr. Martens air-cushioned sole, providing all-day comfort.

For men, these Vostey Chukka Boots will take you from the city to the countryside, thanks to their clever functionality combined with their stylish design.

The faux leather boots are water resistant, have durable laces, and have a non-slip rubber outsole.

Accessories

Winter accessories like hats, gloves, and scarves are essential for staying warm in the coldest season.

First, choose a winter hat that covers your ears, protecting them from the icy winds.

A faux fur-lined Russian trooper hat like this one from Tough Headwear is a top choice for trapping heat in the coldest conditions.

For scarves, choose thick cable knit styles like this chunky wrap scarf by Neosan . This oversized scarf comes in various colors and patterns, making any outfit stylish and eye-catching.

Neck warmers are an excellent alternative to scarves as they are fleece lined and provide more coverage around the neck area.

Thus, if you’re heading somewhere snowy, a neck warmer like this one from NovForth is a must.

Lastly, these OZERO Winter Thermal Gloves are ideal. They feature touchscreen fingers, so you don’t have to take them off whenever you want to make a call or text.

Plus, along with the thermal fleece lining, they have a windproof and water-resistant outer shell.

How to Build the Perfect Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

One of our very best packing tips is to fill your closet (and suitcase) with reliable staples you can rewear again and again. Of course, those essentials will vary slightly by season. When building a winter travel capsule wardrobe, timeless basics and layering pieces are key. Instead of panic-buying trendy outfits you'll wear once before every vacation, focus on adding a few high-quality pieces to your wardrobe that pair effortlessly with your existing favorites and will last for years to come.

If you think you really have nothing to wear for your next weekend away, we've got you covered with all the basics needed to build your very own winter travel capsule wardrobe from scratch. These are the thermal layers, comfortable shoes, and practical dresses that'll work whether you're headed on an après-ski trip with friends or exploring a new cold-weather city. From cashmere sweaters and cozy matching sets to packable puffers and sleek leather bags, you can count on these multi-purpose must-haves to keep your outfit options endless.

Must-haves for a winter travel capsule wardrobe:

The perfect long-sleeve, the cashmere sweater, the matching set, the tailored pant, the dark wash jean, the winter legging, the packable puffer, the chic city coat, the durable boot, the everyday sneaker, the leather bag.

Dressing for cold weather is all about layering. The perfect base for every winter outfit: a soft, basic long-sleeve shirt that can be easily layered underneath jackets and vests , and be worn on its own, too. Neutral colors are your best bet—they can be tucked into just about any pair of pants you pack and can be reworn with almost any outfit.

What's better than slipping on your favorite cozy sweater and curling up by the fireplace? Cashmere sweaters look extremely polished when dressed up with a skirt and tights, and work just as well with simple jeans and loafers . The material is known to be ultra-soft, warm, and supremely timeless—you'll be wearing these sweaters for winters to come.

Every traveler understands the importance of cozy loungewear , especially when it comes to long-haul flights . The secret to dressing comfortably at the airport while still looking put together is a monochromatic matching set. Slip on either of these sets from Buck Mason or Lulus with a pair of white sneakers, baseball cap, and long coat over top and you'll be serving effortless airport style instantly.

Just because the temperature drops doesn't mean we have to swear off dresses for the season. In fact, simple dresses that can be worn with a pair of tights or tall boots are a great way to elevate your look without sacrificing too much warmth. Below, you'll find a few of our favorite styles to wear this season, from long-sleeve turtle necks and cozy sweater dresses to the viral Soft Lounge dress from Skims. Toss any of these options in your suitcase for your next getaway and you'll be covered for fancy dinners, parties, and any other dressed-up events.

A sleek pair of pants like these from Abercrombie & Fitch and Everlane are so versatile—they transition from the office to a dinner date effortlessly. Pair them with your favorite loafers or a plain white sneaker and you're ready to go.

We all need that one favorite pair of jeans. While I love my light-colored jeans most of the year, a dark wash is much more fitting for winter months. We don't need to tell you just how often you'll be wearing these this season. I always pack a high-waisted, straight-leg jean without any rips like the pair below from Madewell in my suitcase—even in the summer months, just in case.

europe winter travel wardrobe

If I'm not traveling in a loungewear set, I'm rocking my go-to pair of black leggings . This time of year, I trade them in for an extra-warm pair of winter leggings . These are typically lined with a soft material like fleece and offer added insulation for those frigid, snowy days. Thermal leggings especially come in handy for outdoorsy winter trips—whether you're skiing, snowboarding, or just cabin-bound, these will be your new BFF.

Don't underestimate the power of a packable puffer . Styles like these from Girlfriend Collective and Patagonia offer a surprising amount of warmth for how lightweight and seemingly thin they are. The best part? These compressible jackets can be packed down into a small bag, making them a must-have for travelers with little suitcase room traveling from a warm-weather destination, or bringing multiple coats along.

If you're headed out for a day of sightseeing, you'll want to throw on a chic long coat that offers equal parts warmth and style. These wool coats are great to wear over a sweatshirt, sweater, or light jacket, and lock in plenty of heat for a full day of exploring.

europe winter travel wardrobe

If one's things for sure: We'll always rely on a durable boot for the winter. Whether you want something sleek to dress up an outfit, a waterproof workhorse that can take on uneven terrain, or a shearling-lined boot for those extra-windy days, we've got you covered. While boots certainly aren't the most packable shoe you own (if possible, wear them on the plane), they always prove worth it!

europe winter travel wardrobe

The year-round essential we're packing no matter what: a classic white sneaker . These comfortable kicks from Adidas, Veja, New Balance, and Reebok will match any outfit in your carry-on, whether it's a pair of jeans, leggings, slacks, or a casual dress. When you're walking around a new city clocking upwards of 20,000 steps, you'll definitely want a trusted sneaker you can wear all day long, blister-free. The New Balance 547 Core sneakers have accompanied me on countless trips, from weeklong cruises and winter cabin escapes to European walking tours.

Image may contain: Clothing, Shoe, Footwear, Apparel, and Sneaker

We all know the importance of an ultra-soft, warm scarf to protect our necks from extreme temperatures. Made of winter-ready materials like wool, cashmere, and alpaca, these lightweight scarves are the great for travelers, whether you're commuting to work, headed on a ski trip, or want something to wrap around you on a chilly plane ride. The options below are just as chic as they are practical.

europe winter travel wardrobe

Rounding out our list of the best winter wardrobe essentials for travelers is none other than a leather bag—the kind you'll wear anywhere and everywhere this season and beyond. We've gathered a few of our favorite styles, from trendy Poléne and Coach bags to last-forever options from Madewell and Cuyana. These crossbody, shoulder, and tote bags are perfect for day trips, museum openings, and dinner dates. I try to save packing space by bringing along a black or brown leather bag that will match any outfit in my carry-on and suit any occasion.

What is a Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe?

Woman in hat and scarf in Snow in Winter

To know what a Winter travel capsule wardrobe is, it is worth outlining what a travel capsule wardrobe is.

Capsule wardrobes, travel or regular, are a method of limiting the clothes you are using. Using a travel capsule wardrobe is a great way of avoiding overpacking.

A travel capsule wardrobe, no matter the season, uses a few key pieces of clothing to make up several cute mix and match outfits. Basically meaning that every piece of your wardrobe, can be used in multiple outfits to create completely different outfits.

However Winter travel capsule wardrobes can be more challenging to pack, especially if you want to travel with hand luggage only. That is because the weight of clothes you are traveling with will inevitably take up more space in your case.

Therefore in this guide we will tell you the best clothes to pack for winter season travel while giving advice on packing them to maximise your luggage space.

Depending on the length of our travels and the destination we also use other packing techniques to create our capsule wardrobes such as:

  • The 54321 packing method
  • the Sudoku packing technique (3 x 3 packing method).

Note: This is our Winter travel capsule wardrobe but if you are interested in learning how to pack capsule wardrobes for other seasons be sure to check out our other seasonal posts:

  • Spring Travel Capsule Wardrobe
  • Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe
  • Fall Travel Capsule Wardrobe

This Winter packing list and capsule wardrobe is designed to be used in the traditional Winter months of December, January and February. In places with traditional Winter weather i.e. Europe in Winter , the North East USA and Canada in Winter for instance.

Note : if you are traveling to the Southern hemisphere i.e. Australia and South Africa, Winter is obviously catagorized as June, July and August.

And even if you are traveling in Winter it is worth pointing out that packing lists can differ from place to place, especially in relation to local temperatures and dress codes. If you want a specific destination and month head to the top of this page and type your location and month of travel into the search bar i.e. London December.

Also if there is a specific activity you are doing, it is worth checking out our activity based capsule wardrobes:

So now you know what a Winter travel capsule wardrobe is how do you begin to put one together?

How to put together a Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Woman in Christmas outfit while traveling in Europe

Whenever I am putting together a capsule wardrobe the first thing I always start with the same principles for narrowing down my selection. The first being:

Select a color palette

Having a clear color palette is essential for creating any successful capsule wardrobe no matter the season of travel.

Without a clear color palette your items will not mix and match correctly and therefore will not create multiple cohesive Winter outfits.

However a color palette does not have to be boring or monochrome in order to create a successful capsule wardrobe. Many people choose to stick to monochrome or neutral colors as these tend to be easier to mix and match. However there is nothing stopping you going with a louder color palette.

For Winter capsule wardrobes however, I personally like to have a more muted color palette, especially for traveling to Europe. That is because it fits in with local styles more.

But if you are planning to use your winter capsule wardrobe in December as a Christmas capsule wardrobe you may want to leave into more Christmassy colors such as red and green.

Plan out your outfits in advance

Whenever I am packing my travel capsule wardrobe, I always lay my clothes out and plan my outfit combinations in advance.

This way you know that everything you have goes in your outfits and can be used multiple times.

Plan for Activities

This Winter Travel Capsule wardrobe is designed for city breaks and traditional Winter outings. However for more extreme Winter activities such as skiing, skating, husky rides etc you will need to alter this list to prepare for your activity.

Check weather before travel

Obviously this is a generic Winter capsule wardrobe designed for use during traditional Winter weather in December, January and February. However a word of caution is to always check the weather at your destination 7 days before travel and keep an eye on it up until departure.

That is because you can always get cold snaps which can affect things like snowfall, ice or rain at your destination.

Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe Essential Items

Woman in Winter outfit in European street with twinkling lights

So now you know the principles of how to put together a winter travel capsule wardrobe we will look at some of our favorite pieces to include:

Although we don’t normally have pairs of jeans as part of our summer capsule wardrobe they are absolutely an essential for any Winter packing list.

A pair of black jeans are a super versatile pieces and hide stains easier than a light wash jeans. Also you will find in Europe in particular that dark blue are a popular style. As I normally have a pair of black pants with me I will usually pick a dark blue pair of jeans for Winter travel.

If you are traveling in the US or Canada I would select the style of jeans you are most comfortable i.e. your favorite jeans from home. However for mainland Europe I would stick to smarter jeans and skinny jeans as opposed to boyfriend jeans or baggy jeans. That is because these are more akin to local style.

Also for Winter I prefer to have a pair of lined jeans. These are better insulated against cold weather and are comfy even in more extreme weather conditions and cold climates.

Black Pants

No packing list or capsule wardrobe is complete without a pair of black pants in my opinion.

My absolute favorite travel pant of the moment has to be the Athleta Brooklyn Pant which happily come in black as standard (though there are also some great bold colors too).

But not only that the fact that they do not wrinkle, along with the ability to machine wash and dry make them perfect for traveling and including in this minimalist capsule wardrobe.

I like to wear these as part of my airplane outfit which again saves room in your luggage and means as a minimalist traveler you may be able to travel with carry-on suitcase only / hand luggage only.

And if you are happy to have a more casual pant and want something slightly thicker than the Athleta black jogger is another superb choice for your Winter wardrobe capsule.

Click here to shop the Athleta Brooklyn ankle pant for travel.

Fleece Lined Leggings

If you want to dress for comfort then you also can’t go wrong with a pair of fleece lined leggings too.

Click here to shop fleece lined leggings

And if you are planning to go out in the Winter, then we love a sparkly skirt that can be paired with sweaters or t shirts and tights to make a glam evening outfit.

Click here to shop going out skirts for Winter.

One type of dress I love for a capsule wardrobe is the classic little black dress. This is one of those timeless pieces that every woman should have in their wardrobe, for travel or not.

For a Winter travel wardrobe I recommend packing a sweater dress as a warmer evening out outfit. I like to pair this with thick tights and ankle boots.

Click here to shop sweater dresses.

Best Tops for Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobes

A basic tee, either long or short sleeve is an essential for a capsule wardrobe at any time of year. It is perfect as both a base layer and also a top layer on warmer Winter days.

Note : you could go with something with a graphic or illustration. Personally I am partial to a band tee. However for Europe you will find that plain t shirts are more in keeping with local styles. Also when using for layering basic t shirts in more neutral colors are better.

Click here to shop tees for travel.

Merino Wool Base Layer

Merino wool is one of my favorite fabrics to include in a Winter capsule wardrobe. That is because provide extra warmth as they are an insulating fabric but is also compact unlike a thick knit.

Therefore it is easy to pack and doesn’t take up a lot of space in your case.

Turtleneck tops are particularly popular for Winter, and there are some great merino wool options so this is an absolute must for my list.

But if you are going somewhere that is extremely cold days you may also want to add a merino wool thermal base layer too!

Click here to shop merino wool tops.

Shirt / Shacket

Another great layering option is a plaid shirt or plaid shacket. This is a half way house between a regular plaid shirt and a jacket and usually is lined with fleece.

This can be either worn open with your base layer underneath, or done up at as a top.

Best Layers for Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobes

Layers are probably the most important part of your winter capsule wardrobe. But what layers should you include? Our essentials for women are:

Cozy sweaters are synonomous with winter and are absolutely an essential for any Winter wardrobe. The difficulty in packing sweaters and jumpers for Winter capsule wardrobes is they take up lots of space in your case.

Therefore when we look at the best sweaters for travel we look at:

  • warmth vs bulk – I like to make sure the sweaters I pack are not bulky sweaters to make them easier to pack while also have some good thermal qualities
  • easy to layer – while I absolutely adore interesting sleeve shapes and batwing jumpers I don’t recommend packing them for capsule wardrobes. That is because they can feel bulky and uncomfortable to wear under coats. Therefore I pick a more fitted silhouette.

For my perfect cosy Winter sweater I like to pack items made of wool (especially merino wool), cashmere and fleece material.

Turtleneck sweaters are a good way of adding a detail into your silhouette while still being comfortable to wear under and over things. Cable knit sweaters are also a great way of adding some texture into your winter capsule wardrobe.

A fleece is another of my wardrobe essentials for Winter. Fleece is a great material for capsule wardrobes as they pack down really slim while being very warm.

They are also good for windy locations, and also dry quickly if you get caught in the rain.

Best Coats for Winter Wardrobes for Travel

And of course no Winter wardrobe is complete without a coat. Now depending on where you are going and what you are doing will depend on the coat you need. I either opt for a:

Puffer Jacket

A puffer jacket is perfect for those going to really cold destinations. I try and find one with some water resistance or water proofing as this is good for cold and wet places such as Iceland and Scotland in Winter.

My favorite brands for Winter puffer coats are Marmot and Columbia, as these are warm and durable.

Note : often these type of jackets can run a little small in their sizing. This with the fact that you are likely to be using lots of thicker layers underneath may mean you find it more comfortable to shop one size larger than normal.

Click here to shop puffer jackets for winter travel.

Smart Wool Coat

However if you are traveling somewhere where you will be spending limited time doing outdoors activities and visiting places which may have a dress code i.e. afternoon teas or theatre, then you may want to change out the puffer jacket for a smarter wool coat.

Click here to shop smart wool coats.

Note : coats can be hard to travel with. If you are not planning on wearing your coat as part of your airport outfit because you are traveling from a warm to cold weather destination for example you will need to plan on how to pack your jacket. For more information on how to pack coats for travel check out this post.

Best Shoes for your Winter Capsule Wardrobe for Travel

So now you know the clothes you should pack for your Winter travels, we turn our attention to shoes. Now shoes are important no matter which seasonal wardrobe you are packing but they are even more important in Winter.

When packing a pair pf shoes for Winter travel you need to make sure they have:

  • a good sole – in case of icy weather, a sole that can cope with slippery surfaces is really important.
  • some waterproofing / water resistance – in case of rainy winter weather.

Boots are my number one pick for Winter travel. I make sure they have a thick sole and waterproofing.

If I am traveling and visiting smarter locations then I love a knee high boot. However ankle boots are easier to pack and better for more outdoorsy itineraries.

If I am not doing a minimalist wardrobe I tend to pack both. Usually I will wear the knee-high boots as part of my airplane outfit and pack my ankle boots.

Click here to shop Winter boots.

And if I have space or plan on doing lots of activities I will usually also pack:

I tend to pick a leather pair with some waterproofing as my favorite winter sneaker for travel. My favorite brand for waterproof sneakers are Ecco.

Click here to shop waterproof sneakers.

What else to add to your Winter Capsule Wardrobe for Travel

So what else should you add to your Winter Capsule wardrobe? This section looks at both essentials and nice to have things for your Winter packing list.

Obviously underwear is an essential to any capsule wardrobe. Pants / knickers are obviosuly on this list and for bras we recommend having one bra in a neutral or flesh tone as it layers under everything. But a sports bra is also a good idea for those doing activities as part of their Winter vacation itinerary.

On top of this we recommend packing:

  • Thick socks – I like hiking socks in Winter as I get cold feet when sightseeing.
  • Thick Tights – to wear under dresses or skirts in the evening.

Hat, Scarf and Gloves set

I would also recommend taking with you a matching scarf and gloves set that match your winter coat to finish off the look.

We recommend making sure the gloves you bring have the electric conductor pad on the finer so you can still use your smart phone for taking photos and using things like google maps with your gloves on.

Click here to shop winter accessories

Traveling with jewelry can feel a bit like a minefield especially if you are worried about traveling with expensive or precious jewelry.

The type of jewelry you travel with is really a personal choice about what you feel comfortable with. However we think even traveling with some costume jewelry is a good idea to help you make your capsule wardrobe outfits look a bit different.

For more information on how to travel with jewelry check out this post.

Crossbody Bag

A  crossbody bag,   the anti theft type is actually always on my packing lists especially for traveling in cities such as Rome and Barcelona.

It can add peace of mind for travellers by making you a harder target for pickpockets. When selecting a crossbody bag I would pick something in a neutral color such as brown, black or navy depending on the palette of your capsule wardrobe and think about one that can be sued throughout your seasonal capsule wardrobes.

Shop  crossbody bags here.

Pashminas are my number one  travel essential for women  as they are so versatile as a great layering piece and are always part of my perfect fall capsule wardrobe.

They can be used as an extra layer in the cooler weather or even as a scarf, and can also make outfits more modest at religious sites. And of course they are a great day to style an outfit differently for a day to night transition.

Good Deodorant

As the point of a travel capsule wardrobe is to reuse items to create many different looks it is absolutely essential that you have a good deodorant that works for you. Otherwise you may find yourself short on the top front.

We hope this has helped you put together your own Winter travel Capsule wardrobe .  But if you have any questions about how to create a winter travel capsule wardrobe leave us a comment below and we will do our best to get back to you as soon as we can.

A Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe Based on Your Trip Length

  • February 22, 2024

woman wearing gloves and winter coat in snow.

In this Article

Picture this: you’re on a winter trip and look into your suitcase. You have all the clothing pieces you need and nothing you don’t. Each item plays well with the next, making it ready to style you up for any winter adventure.  That’s a winter travel capsule wardrobe in a nutshell.

As someone who tends to overpack, I can attest to the powers of a  travel capsule wardrobe . That’s why I’m breaking down how to build a winter capsule and sharing 3 example wardrobes, based on trip length.

Put down your lengthy packing list. It’s time to meet your minimalist winter travel capsule wardrobe.

WHAT IS A WINTER TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE?

A winter travel capsule wardrobe is a thoughtful selection of warm clothing essentials that mix and match to create multiple flattering outfits.  It contains anywhere from 10-30 pieces including sweaters, thermals, versatile bottoms, and insulated outerwear. Adopting a capsule allows you to travel light(er) without sacrificing style. To get the most out of your capsule, I recommend packing items for each level of layering – more on that in a minute.

WHY BOTHER BUILDING A WINTER TRAVEL WARDROBE

As a frequent flier, I’m no stranger to the trials of packing.  The point of a travel capsule wardrobe is to streamline the packing process so you have all the essentials for chic outfits without the overstuffed suitcase.

If you’re longing to be a carry-on-only traveler, read on.

Benefit 1:  Stress-free packing.  I find packing much simpler when I have a predefined set of clothing that I know works seamlessly together. See how much faster packing goes once you have a capsule to work with.

Benefit 2:  Less luggage to carry.  One of the most delightful perks of a winter travel capsule wardrobe is parting ways with bulky suitcases. Picture yourself gliding through terminals, unburdened by excess luggage.

Benefit 3:  Effortless outfit creation.  When building a travel capsule, you choose each garment strategically, ensuring that, you’re dressed to kill no matter what combination you pull out. As someone who used to pack lots of clothing only to find that the pieces didn’t play well together, this is a game-changer.

See? There’s  much to love about capsule wardrobes . Now let’s build yours.

HOW TO BUILD A WINTER TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE

1. check your itinerary.

Before you start throwing clothes into your capsule, consider the climate and the activities you have in mind. For instance, when I planned my winter trip to Whistler, Canada, I knew I needed clothes for skiing, après-ski activities, and perhaps a cozy evening by the fireplace. Certain winter destinations require thicker layers, so pull up that forecast to be sure.

2. SELECT YOUR COLOR PALETTE

Yes, even a minimalist winter travel capsule needs a color scheme that suits your style. For a winter trip, neutral tones like blacks, grays, browns, and whites are classic choices. When I prepared my Whistler wardrobe, I leaned towards whites and neutrals as they can be effortlessly mixed and matched.

Stumped during color selection?  Check out 6 ways to pick a capsule color scheme here.

3. CREATE YOUR CORE TRAVEL CLOSET

Now for the winning formula to create a winter travel capsule wardrobe. Craft your core closet aka the foundational pieces that form the backbone of your outfits.  We’ll break this down into three crucial layers: base, mid, and outerwear.

Select Base Pieces:  Start with your undergarments and foundational pieces. These should keep you warm and provide comfort against the skin. Think thermal tops, long johns, and moisture-wicking materials. I typically choose thermal tops and leggings as my base layer.

Select Mid Layer Pieces:  Your mid layer adds insulation and style to your ensemble. This includes sweaters, cardigans, and other items that can be paired with the base layer. Opt for versatility and warmth. I included sweaters and turtlenecks for my Whistler trip.

Select Outerwear Pieces:  Outerwear provides protection from the cold, wind, and possibly rain or snow. These are your parkas, your trench coats, the heavy hitters. For Whistler, I included a waterproof ski jacket and a warm winter coat.

4. MIX AND MATCH

A minimalist winter travel capsule gives you the ability to create numerous outfits from a few key pieces. Pair each item with the others to ensure they all harmonize together. In Canada, I knew I could pair my thermal layers with both casual outfits and ski gear, giving me options without adding bulk.

5. TEST YOUR CAPSULE

Before zipping up your suitcase, try on the outfits you’ve planned. If something doesn’t feel right or versatile enough, swap it out. You want to ensure each piece makes you feel confident and comfortable. This edit phase isn’t technically a must. But I highly recommend it if you’re new to travel capsule wardrobes.

2 Pairs of Jeans:  Take it from me, you won’t regret packing a couple of flattering pairs of denim.

1 Pair of Trousers:  For an elevated look, bring wide-leg or tapered trousers along.

1 Pair of Leggings:  Leggings feature heavily in my athleisure capsule but their draw extends to travel as well. Because they take up little space, you can get away with bringing more than one pair.

1 Skirt:  Bring at least one skirt to add variety. I can confirm that maxis pair beautifully with turtlenecks.

1 Dress:  A chic, all-in-one option for a formal outing.

OUTERWEAR (4 PIECES):

1 Waterproof Jacket:  Ideal for outdoor activities and protection against the elements.

1 Warm Winter Coat:  A pea coat or trench coat are timeless options.

1 Stylish Blazer:  If structured blazers aren’t your thing, try a soft wool variety sans buttons.

1 Vest:  Adds a layer of warmth without bulk.

SHOES (4 PAIRS):

1 Pair of Walking Boots:  Look for a water-resistant pair so you can navigate the elements with ease.

1 Pair of Casual Shoes:  I lean towards sneakers since they look equally chic with trousers, jeans, and skirts.

1 Pair of Dressy Shoes:  Pack these for formal outings.

1 Pair of Slippers:  Yes, you could snag these at the hotel. But there’s something about having your own cozy pair after a travel day. If you know, you know.

WINTER TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE ESSENTIALS

When curating your winter travel capsule wardrobe, having the right clothing essentials can make all the difference.  I broke this packing list into four crucial categories: base layers, mid layers, outerwear, and accessories.

BASE LAYERS

Insulated Thermal Tops and Bottoms : Essential for trapping body heat and keeping you warm as your first layer of defense against the cold.

Moisture-Wicking Underwear and Bras : Ensures comfort by keeping moisture away from the skin, a fundamental part of your base layer.

Wool or Thermal Socks : Providing insulation and keeping your feet cozy, these are a must for any winter trip.

Fitted Turtleneck : A versatile and warm mid layer that adds style and additional insulation.

Silk Blouse : Stylish and cozy, silk blouses offer a luxurious mid-layer option for various occasions during your trip.

Wrap Sweater : A fashionable mid-layer option that can be dressed up or down for different looks.

Fleece-Lined Leggings : A comfortable and warm option to layer under skirts or pants, adding an extra barrier against the cold.

Tailored Trousers : Versatile pants that can be paired with various tops for different occasions during your trip.

Quality Winter Coat : Your primary defense against winter elements; make sure it’s warm, insulated, and preferably waterproof.

Trench Coat : A stylish option for milder winter days, providing both warmth and a classic look.

Parka : Ideal for extreme cold and snowy conditions, offering maximum insulation and protection.

ACCESSORIES

Scarves, Hats, and Gloves : Crucial for protecting your neck, head, and ears from cold winds. Also an arguably low-effort way to weave in some color, if that’s your thing.

Warm Headband or Ear Muffs : An alternative to hats, providing warmth and style without flattening your hair. This goes out to my fellow curly girls who can’t stuff their tresses under a beanie.

HOW TO PACK FOR A WINTER TRIP IN A CARRY-ON

If fitting all those cozy wonders into a humble carry-on sounds daunting, don’t worry. A streamlined winter travel capsule wardrobe is the solution. Let’s master the art of minimalist packing.

STEP 1: PLAN YOUR ACTIVITIES, NOT JUST THE DAYS

Begin with a clear understanding of the activities and events you’ll partake in during your trip. This will dictate the variety of outfits you need. From exploring the snowy mountains to sipping hot cocoa by the fireplace, plan for each scenario.

STEP 2: BUILD YOUR CORE CLOSET

Want to pack with purpose? Here’s a formula for your core closet:

Base Layers (Pack 3):  These are your foundational pieces, like thermal tops and leggings. Choose ones that mix and match well.

Mid Layers (Pack 4):  Think sweaters, blouses, and casual tops. Aim for versatility; each piece should pair with multiple bottoms.

Outerwear (Pack 2):  Include a waterproof jacket and a warm winter coat. If lighter layers are in order, pull in a stylish blazer and a vest that complement your mid layers.

Bottoms (Pack 4):  Opt for a mix of jeans, leggings, and a skirt or dress. Ensure they go well with all your tops.

Shoes (Pack 3):  Walking boots, a pair of sneakers, and dressy shoes.

For a weekend trip to Sedona, we packed winter hiking clothes.

STEP 3: CREATE LAYER LEVELS

To maximize space, plan a three-tier layering system:

  • Base Level: Thermal tops and leggings.
  • Mid Level: Sweaters, blouses, and tops.
  • Outerwear: Coats, vests, and jackets.

STEP 4: ROLL, DON’T FOLD

Rolling your clothes rather than folding them saves space. And, as I have been reliably informed by travel enthusiasts,  rolling also reduces wrinkles in your fabrics.  Another pro tip- place heavier items at the bottom near the wheels, and lighter ones on top.

STEP 5: MINIMIZE BULKY ITEMS

Winter packing comes with the attendant bulky items. Fortunately, we can tackle the trouble in two ways.  First, make friends with a good vacuum-sealed bag . I keep a few of these in my carry-on and use them to suck all the puff out of my parkas before packing. Just make sure you’ll have access to a vacuum when it’s time to repack.

Second, wear your bulky items to the airport.  The chunky boots or long down coat may be a pain to take off through TSA, but keeping them outside of your luggage frees up valuable space.

HOW MANY PIECES SHOULD BE IN A WINTER TRAVEL WARDROBE?

For a weekend getaway, a slim winter travel capsule wardrobe of 10-15 pieces works wonders. For a 10-day trip, aim for a capsule of 15-20 pieces, striking a balance between variety and compactness. Now, if you’re embarking on a two-week adventure, aim for a range of 20-25 pieces. This accommodates the longer duration while still staying within the confines of a carry-on.

On my recent weeklong jaunt to Whistler, Canada I brought about 20 pieces including snow pants, turtlenecks, trousers, and cozy sweaters.

Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe: How to Pack 10 Days in a Carry-On

Packing for trips is a mindful discipline of choosing between needs and wants. This January, I took a 10-day trip to Italy with only a carry-on. As if my bulky sweaters didn’t take up enough space, I also intended to leave extra space of souvenirs and a handbag purchase on the way back. With much thoughtful planning, I somehow made it all fit! Here is my formula for a winter travel capsule wardrobe that provided me all the basics I needed. Read to the end for additional space-saving tips and tricks!

The Bulkiest Layer: Coats & Jackets

With consistent 30-40 degree weather in Italy, I ended up only bringing a single mid-length puffer coat. The North Face Metropolis is a classic style that is warm, and reasonably priced. I wore my puffer to the airport, so it technically didn’t take up any suitcase space. If you want more coat options, consider also packing a quilted liner jacket . I brought an ‘Ultralight Down’ version from Uniqlo that was compact, and worked great as a standalone coat on warmer days. Meanwhile on the colder days, I could layer it underneath my puffer for added warmth.

Secondary Layers: Sweaters & Blouses

I packed a total of 3 sweaters, and 1 dressier top that I planned to wear 2-3 times each during the trip. These options helped me to get dressed with ease, and offered plenty of styling combinations. My top recommended brands for high-quality, reasonably priced sweaters are Quince , Everlane , and Uniqlo (which has the best fitted wool turtlenecks).

  • Fitted Wool Turtleneck (Neutral Color)
  • Thicker Sweater of Choice
  • Blouse – for a dressier look

These pieces make an effortless winter travel capsule wardrobe. You can mix and match with almost any bottom, and look chic for a day of shopping or sightseeing.

Base Layers: Undershirts

Undershirts are a great way to stay warm in the winter, and maximize your wardrobe on travel. Look for ones that are thin and fitted. They are effective at trapping warmth, but also feel (and look) invisible when layered underneath a sweater. The best part is they keep your secondary layers clean for more wears. Depending on how active I was during the day, I also re-wore my undershirts a few times.

These might need to be rotated more frequently, so I packed 4 for the trip. You can find great ones from Neiwai , Everlane (search for ‘micro rib’ tops), and Abercrombie . I also love Uniqlo’s Airism tops, but recommend shopping them in-stores because the inventory on the site is always very scarce.

How to pack lightly for a winter trip ft. Olive Green Quilted Liner Jacket, Black Flared Leggings, MZ Wallace Crosby Pippa Handbag, striped turtleneck sweater. Location: Rome, Italy (right in front of the Colosseum)

Bottoms for Winter Travel

I felt that 3-4 pairs of pants were just right for the trip: 3 pairs of jeans (black / blue / one light color), and 1 pair of black leggings. One of the worst things we can do to denim is overwash them! In fact, Levi’s recommends washing one every 10 wears (unless they start to smell). So that pretty much makes them the perfect pants for travel. Linking some of my favorite Madewell styles below.

Packing 3 colors with me helped to maximize my outfit combinations for the trip. Meanwhile, I reserved my comfy leggings for days of long walking. I love Aerie for their well-priced and stylish leggings (reviewed HERE ).

2 Types of Shoes You Need for a Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe

With just a carry-on, I didn’t have the luxury of packing oversized boots. So for this part, I kept it simple and I think these two options served me well:

  • Neutral Sneakers – I love my platform Keds because they are well-cushioned, have a narrower look, and go with so many outfits.
  • Waterproof / Water Resistant Boots: Pick the right pair, and they can be super stylish with any outfit! While mine from Dolce Vita didn’t arrive in time, I would highly recommend them as they are lightweight, waterproof, and comfortable for walking longer distance.

Quick Notes : I loved the Huey H2O boots (first pair above), and found them quite comfortable for walking long distances. The heel of the Caster Boots (second pair) is heavier, and took me 2-3 wears to get used to the feeling.

Both are waterproof and comfy, but the Huey may be better suited for travel if you aren’t accustomed to wearing heeled booties as often. Style-wise, I found the Caster boots to look more feminine and leg-lengthening.

These Marc Fisher black rain boots are also very comfortable (though less breathable). Here is another simple affordable option if you don’t want leather.

Perfect Crossbody Bag for Travel

Accessories really make an outfit, and for me, I was so grateful I went with the MZ Wallace Crosby Pippa as my everyday travel bag (review HERE ). Although this versatile handbag comes with 3 straps, I only used the leather strap attachment on my trip. It was definitely meant to be a longer shoulder strap. However, when adjusted to its longest length, it made the perfectly situated crossbody.

I normally find that a lot of crossbody bags sit too low for me, but this one was at the perfect drop-down height where I could see everything I needed in organized compartments. The zipper glides very smoothly, and for such a small size, it is impressive how much this bag holds. I wore the regular sized Pippa (first), but also linked the larger size (second) below.

Additional Space-Saving Tips for Winter Travel

  • Be clever with how you fold your clothes . Pouch-folding and the Mari Kondo fold are two techniques I use when packing a suitcase. They help conserve space, and stabilize the shape of clothes to prevent wrinkles from developing.
  • Wear your bulkiest outfit to the airport. While I didn’t follow this step on my way there, I definitely did so on my way back, as I had more to carry. I would have much preferred leggings on a long flight, but it was the sacrifice I made to create more suitcase space.
  • Bring a spacious personal bag . I wore my trusted MZ Wallace Metro Deluxe Tote as a personal item, and it fit so much! This bag comes with a ton of inner and outer compartments, as well as a handy luggage sleeve. (I brought with me the Medium , but linking the Large below as well as the Travel Jimmy Duffel which I also love)
  • Hand-Washing is allowed on trips! The thought of doing laundry on vacation sounds unthinkable for some. However, hand-washing a few lightweight items is pretty quick and simple. If you are in the bind and running out of clothes, I would definitely consider it as an option. Nowadays, you can buy travel-sized laundry sheets , which take up hardly any space. I packed in my cosmetics bag, and definitely used it a few times.

If you’re traveling this season, I hope this winter travel capsule wardrobe provides you some great tips to consider. Most importantly, have so much fun and remember that functional outfits can be stylish too!

I’m a Travel Writer, and These Are the Only 13 Cozy Styles I Pack for Winter Trips

These capsule wardrobe basics are so easy to mix and match that I never pack anything else.

Travel + Leisure / Daisy Rodriguez

Ask me to fit my summer resort wear in a carry-on? Challenge gladly accepted! But when it comes to my winter wardrobe , I sometimes stare at stacks of chunky knit sweaters and a lineup of boots and wonder how I’ll Tetris them into my suitcase. But one thing I learned as a fashion closet intern at magazines in New York is the art of editing.

When I’m packing for a trip — which is often, since I’m on the road nearly three weeks out of the month for my job as a travel writer — I try a similar tactic. I pull out all of my favorites and slowly start taking away the ones that I can live without on a trip. This has helped streamline my closet and form a capsule wardrobe of interchangeable basics. It does wonders for packing and cuts down on getting ready time, too.

So while winter may mean more layers and thicker fabric, once you’ve narrowed down the basics, you can keep your style looking fresh without having to change too much. Mix and match a silk slip skirt with Chelsea boots and a turtleneck sweater or fleece overshirt for a shopping day in London. Sport a holiday party-ready metallic sling purse with a versatile white button-down and you’re ready for the galleries of Art Basel Miami. Here’s a list of 13 travel writer-approved must-haves that are the only splurges you’ll need to make this season — and they start at just $30 at Amazon.

Oversized Turtleneck Knit Sweater

I’m all about having a seasonal uniform, and once you find one or two great knits, they’re an easy way to make an outfit look pulled together. Italian designers like Loro Piana and Brunello Cucinelli are the originators of quiet luxury when it comes to cashmere. I’ll let you in on a secret: You don’t need to drop thousands for your winter wardrobe to look expensive. It’s all about finding the right color and fit.

This pale apricot is a subtle shade, but it can seem more sophisticated than a standard bone white or jet black. The exaggerated turtleneck gently folds over, forming a scarf-like collar, and the slits on either side give the oversized sweater some movement. “It’s the perfect kind of oversized — it doesn’t look like it’s too big on me,” said one shopper . Let it hang loose over jeans, belt it with cigarette trousers, or tuck it into a skirt and pair with knee-high boots. You can even order a few different options since the style comes in 30 shades.

Travel + Leisure / Lane Nieset

Everlane Corduroy Wide-Leg Pants

If you could only pack one pair of pants to get you through the entire season, these Everlane corduroys would be it. The high-rise, wide-leg style is flattering on most body types, and the oversized pockets wrap from front to back adding a subtle design detail that makes these corduroys look expensive. Winter white is a fantastic shade because you can pair it with a heather gray cashmere top, chunky cream cable-knit sweater, or throw on a contrasting piece of outerwear like an oversized cognac-colored suede shirt jacket. Since the length of the pants skims the ankle, they pair perfectly with Chelsea boots or sneakers since they still allow a pop of color from taller socks to peek through.

Reebok White Leather Sneakers

Sneakers are useful in any season, and that includes winter. Low top and machine washable, you can wear them for both fashion and fitness and keep them looking shiny and new. Shoppers say they’re “easy to wipe clean” and “perfect for the gym, going on a walk, or just because they are so cute.”

Since footwear takes up the most space in a suitcase, I try to be as practical as possible, so these lightweight shoes are the perfect choice. I’d wear them with a long, thick sweater dress or boyfriend jeans, a cable knit top, and an ankle-length overcoat. They’d also look great with my new Alo Yoga tennis sets.

Eddie Bauer Down Duffle Coat

Eddie Bauer

When I first moved to Paris, I panicked — I’d never owned a puffer because growing up in Miami and living in the South of France, I never had to. Even though Paris doesn’t get as bone-chillingly cold as New York or Chicago, I never understood the value of a down puffer until living there. As cozy as a sleeping bag, this 40-inch-long, down-insulated Eddie Bauer duffle coat is an “extremely warm and comfortable coat, perfect for winter in Canada,” according to one shopper. It’s also “not too bulky, still a nice fit with a sweater underneath” and “fit exactly as described.”

The waterproof polyester fabric protects against the elements — whether you’re out in rain or snow — and the adjustable hood really comes in handy when the weather takes a turn, ensuring your neck and head are protected. I have a similar style in black, and I wear it while running errands or walking my dog on chilly days in Paris. It’s also sleek enough to wear out to a nicer dinner or event since it’s a more fitted look that works well over a dress and tights or leather pants and booties. It’s also machine washable, so you don’t need to worry about dry cleaning after traveling.

Fleece-Lined Thermal Joggers

When I’m traveling, I try to pack items that are versatile enough to wear a few different ways — especially in winter, when bulkier pieces take up more space in my carry-on. These soft fleece-lined joggers do just that; plus, they keep you warm even on the coldest of days (they’re designed for weather that dips below freezing) and are treated with a durable water repellent that’s resistant against light rain, snow, and even stains.

“Warm and comfortable, they aren’t stiff like other weatherproof pants are,” one shopper raved . The high waistband has an adjustable drawstring, and the pockets are deep enough to fit cards or even a phone. Perfect for long-haul flights, skiing, hiking, or just lounging in a chalet on a winter getaway, these joggers will become your daily go-to.

Sorel Waterproof Winter Boots

When I was heading to Swedish Lapland (aka the Arctic) in winter, I quickly realized I didn’t own the most crucial item for the trip — proper snow boots. Sure, this location is more extreme than, say, Aspen, but after finding an insulated pair of water- and wind-proof boots like these from Sorel, I’ve worn them in every cold weather locale around the globe since. The molded rubber tread on the bottom offers enough traction to help trek through light snow and prevent slips on icy streets.

This is one accessory that should be more utilitarian than fashionable — but my tip? Choose a neutral shade like this that you can pair with either brown or black clothing. With the faux shearling lining, you don’t have to sacrifice too much in terms of style. As one shopper agreed , “The fur lining is super cozy with or without socks and the boots seem very sturdy. I love these boots!”

Everlane Fleece Shacket

In winter, layering is key, and a piece of outerwear that can be worn as a base underneath a heavy jacket or stand on its own is essential. The boyfriend fit is always in style, but this oversized, boxy Everlane fleece defies gender — it’s an overshirt anyone can wear (and ranges in size from XXS to XXL). The rounded hem and relaxed point collar give it a more structured feel than a simple fleece shirt, so it can be worn over both a crisp white button-down or crewneck cashmere sweater. When paired with tapered or loose-leg jeans, it gives off ’90s vibes — and the look changes entirely with high-waisted, tailored trousers or a suede mini skirt. Plus, it’s made from 100 percent recycled polyester, so you can feel good about giving this fabric a second life.

Long-Sleeve Black Dress

A little black dress goes a long way and can be dressed up or down for just about any occasion. Earning more than 8,200 five-star ratings at Amazon, this belted pencil dress is already a hit this holiday party season. The crew neck shows off a sliver of shoulder adding enough sexiness without being too revealing. Calling it a bodycon dress is somewhat deceiving — it’s not form-fitting or stuck-to-your-skin tight. The dress cinches in just the right place around the hips and below the knee, so it’s a modern version of Audrey Hepburn’s ’50s-style ensembles. Versatile enough to wear to work or as a casual cocktail dress, this capsule piece is an easy one to pack and accessorize for any occasion — plus, you can save room in your suitcase since it already has a built-in belt.

In winter, I’d wear a pair of sparkly tights and pointed patent leather heels for a night out or cocktail party, while during the day it would be great with suede over-the-knee boots and a camel-colored trench or thicker wool coat. “Bought it for a cruise and only needed to add a silvery scarf and earrings to make the perfect outfit,” raved one shopper . “Flattering and comfortable,”  added another person . And at just $39, you can get a few different colors to switch up the look.

Abercrombie & Fitch Ribbed Base Layer Tuckable Tops

Abercrombie & Fitch

The beauty of basics — and base layers — is that they go a long way. They’re the cornerstone of the French look because they transition with the seasons and can be dressed up or down. These soft-to-the-touch tees are a great example of a wardrobe staple that’ll last years. I have a similar style I bought more than a decade ago, and it doesn’t leave my suitcase in winter.

The two-pack of slim-fitting long-sleeve tees in black and white are designed in light, featherweight rib fabric with a delicate crewneck that makes them feel more elevated than a simple thermal top. Wear them on their own tucked into boyfriend jeans or wide-leg pants, use them as a base layer in the snow or on a hike for warmth, or make these tees your new loungewear on a ski trip or an overnight flight. Shoppers say they’re the “perfect fit” and “so light and sleek.” One review even raved, “These tees are perfect for layering under cardigans, sweaters, sweatshirts, flannels, shackets — literally anything. They provide such a nice base layer to keep you cozy warm.”

Madewell Satin Slip Maxi Skirt with Slit

A slip skirt is a winter wardrobe essential. This one from Madewell has just enough edge thanks to the dramatic, knee-high slit up one side. The maxi length drapes delicately around the ankles and pairs nicely with a variety of footwear, from patent leather booties and white sneakers to more dressed-up stilettos. Wear it over a bodysuit to show off your waistline or with a tucked-in tee and chunky cardigan if you want a more casual look. Reviewers say that “the skirt is just perfect” and “it washes well.” One person also raved, “It feels luxurious and expensive — and has a sexy slit up the side that isn’t too revealing.” Trust me, this investment piece is worth the price tag.

Steve Madden Chelsea Boots

The one pair of shoes I continue to resole are my black leather Chelsea boots, since I wear them more than any others in my closet. Chelsea boots aren’t just my winter staple — they’re my year-round go-to for traveling, strolling around town, dining out, and even activities like safari. Few shoes can take you from day to night and match most ensembles and moods, but these ones truly can.

The rounded pointed toe and slight heel add a feminine touch to a shoe that’s typically androgynous, and the lug sole is just as practical as it is trendy (it’s been deemed the street style look this season). There’s really no wrong way to wear them — pull on over tights with a dress or skirt, throw on with jeans or leather pants, or even wear them with more playful looks like a jumpsuit for a holiday soirée. “Very cute and not clunky like some Chelsea boots with a lug sole,” said one reviewer. Another added, “Thrilled with this purchase. Cute and comfortable — I will be using these boots as a fall and winter staple for years to come.”

Button-Down White Long-Sleeve Blouse

There’s something so effortlessly stylish about a white button-down blouse. It can go from feeling formal to the other side of the spectrum — edgy and carefree like you just grabbed your boyfriend’s shirt and styled it to make it your own. Even though this option at Amazon is oversized, you can tuck it into pants and wear a blazer and you’d never know it wasn’t a slim fit. Drape a sweater vest over this button-down, and the look just went from prep school to Parisian street fashion. I even throw a puffer vest on top for a sophisticated version of après-ski attire. Or, you can tuck it into higher-waisted khaki pants with a crocodile-embossed belt for a look that means business but is still playful thanks to rolled-up sleeves and a statement staple like a chunky gold bangle or vintage-style timepiece.

Free People Metallic Gold Sling Purse

Free People

It’s not just the holiday season that warrants some sparkle. This style can add a touch of flair to any outfit all season long, and the gold is neutral enough to match anything in your wardrobe. The supple, U-shaped sling is like wearing a larger, more dressed-up version of a fanny pack (which doesn’t seem to be fading from fashion anytime soon). The adjustable shoulder strap allows you to choose the length so it falls perfectly at hip height, while the interior zip pocket is a great storage spot for essentials like a cardholder or lip balm (that way you don’t have to go digging to find something).

Easy to transition from day to night, this bag is one that you can wear as easily through an airport while traveling on a winter getaway as well as to a holiday work party. As one shopper raved, “It fits so much and looks so chic.” And we agree!

Person sitting on floor packing a carry-on for article about travel capsule wardrobes

Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or it’s your first time taking a trip, figuring out how to pack light can be an intimidating challenge. How Do You Make A Capsule Wardrobe For A Trip?

There are 3 main factors you want to consider when making a travel capsule wardrobe for a trip.

Is It Versatile? This is key for any type of capsule wardrobe but especially one you’ll use for travel. For example, you’ll want a shirt that can be dressed up for dinner or down for a walking tour. This is where it’s all about maximizing every item’s potential and making sure they can be mixed and matched with other items easily.

Is It Comfortable? When I’m on the go, comfort is one of my biggest priorities. I refuse to wear anything that makes me uncomfortable, inside or out, which is why I always opt for pieces with soft fabrics that aren’t overly restricting. All of the items you bring in your fall/winter travel capsule wardrobe should be pieces you’re familiar with or pieces that you are confident will be consistently comfortable throughout your trip.

Is It Packable? This is where you want to focus on lightweight materials. Now I know this can be tough when packing for a trip to a chillier destination. But that’s where layers come in, so don’t worry. With the packing list you’ll find below, you’ll see that all of the items are able to be layered allowing for maximum warmth and space in your carry-on.

How Many Pieces Are In A Travel Capsule Wardrobe?

There’s no hard and fast rule about how many pieces are in a travel capsule wardrobe. It really comes down to how much you want to fit in your bag. In this article, I have 17 items (tops, bottoms, outerwear, shoes, bags) all of which can be easily rolled into a carry-on or worn on the plane/train.

I recommend being a bit cautious of how much you jam-pack in your carry-on for two reasons. A. It’s not fun lugging a heavy carry-on around. And B. Some airlines are pretty strict with weighing carry-ons. I find that in the States I can get away with an overweight carry-on (they rarely weigh, in my experience) but internationally, they are much stricter. So be sure to follow this guide to pack smartly!

What Pieces Are Good For A Fall/Winter Capsule Wardrobe?

These are all the pieces I recommend bringing to maximize your style, and space, with your travel capsule wardrobe.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe Guide for Fall and Winter Months

Black Long Sleeve Shirt – Perfect for layering and giving endless pairing possibilities.  Smokey Blue (Grey) Long Sleeve Shir t – Giving a subtle hint of color, this shirt helps add some depth to your travel capsule wardrobe.  Brown Bodysuit – A great option for an elevated look, especially with the earthy tone.  Black Sweatshirt – Perfect for the plane ride or lounging at the hotel/airbnb.  White Button Down – A quintessential piece for transitioning from day to night.  Multi-Color Sweater – The best way to brighten up an outfit, especially during gloomier days.  Black Cardigan – Whether open, buttoned, or draped on your shoulders, this is the perfect finishing touch to any ensemble.  White Sweater Knit Top – The perfect layering piece that adds a touch of elegance to your outfit.  Printed Wide Leg Pants – Add a touch of playfulness with a printed pant that balances comfort and style.  Black Cargo Pants – The best combination of utility and style, especially with the wide-leg silhouette.  Jeans – A timeless favorite, jeans are a must-pack no matter what.  Brown Leggings – Cozy and comfy, perfect for lounging around, working out, and on the airplane of course.  Black Purse – A sleek black purse is the perfect functional staple.  Canvas Tote Bag – A must-have for grocery store runs and casual outings.  Black Boots – Perfect for dinner or a get-together with new friends on your trip.  White Sneakers – What you’ll likely wear a majority of the time, both cute and comfy.  Wool Coat OR Leather Coat – Depending on the weather at your destination, opt for one of these coats for a classic look. Leather is better for fall weather while a wool coat will keep you warm in colder destinations. Pack a scarf and some clothes for the especially frigid destinations.

Fall/Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe Outfits

When I first wrote this article and recorded this video, my goal was to come up with 18 outfits. Well lucky for you, I actually came up with even more! 20 to be exact. Let’s get into them.

Airport outfit for travel capsule wardrobe featuring black top, sweatershirt, coat, brown leggings, and sneakers

This is the perfect comfy airport outfit. You should choose which coat works best based on the weather of the destination you’re headed to. I always prioritize comfort over everything so this airport outfit is perfect for making sure I’m comfy no matter how long my travels may be.

brown leggings, black cardigan, black top, white sneakers, tote bag

Leggings aren’t a huge part of my wardrobe but this outfit would be perfect for a quick errand that’s a bit more elevated than wearing a sweatshirt. You can never really go wrong with leggings and a cute cardigan.

white button down, brown leggings, black top, black bag, white sneakers for travel capsule wardrobe

Definitely watch the video to see what this looks like. I didn’t love the button-down unbuttoned so I ended up tying it for a little *Britney Spears* moment. It was cute! But now let’s move on from leggings and get into some more practical outfits for everyday looks.

long sleeve, button down, jeans, sneakers, tote bag

I wrote this outfit with the button-down open. It’s a simple, classic look for a more relaxed day.

white long sleeve top, jeans, cardigan, black bag, black boots

I love the square neckline of this top! It’s incredibly flattering. I paired it with the black cardigan but it would likely be fine on its own as this top has very thick material and is warm. In the video, I show you how I cuff the sleeves around the cardigan which gives the look a bit of contrast.

jeans, black cardigan, grey top, white sneakers, black bag for travel capsule wardrobe

You’ll probably notice that the black cardigan is one of the most popular items in all of these outfits and that’s because of its versatility. You’ll see here how well it layers with this top and jeans making it a must-have in any travel capsule wardrobe.

grey top, jeans, white button down, white sneakers, tote bag

Let’s stick with the smokey blue/grey top for now. When I added the button-down, it gave a “scientist” look which I respect, but that’s not the vibe I’m going for. I ended up tucking the top in to make it a bit more sleek. Check out the video to see what I mean!

white button down, jeans, black cardigan, tote bag, sneaker for travel capsule wardrobe

A white button-down is not something I typically incorporate into my outfits so I’m challenging myself to make as many looks as I can with this item. For this outfit, I tucked it in and paired it with the black cardigan. It was a bit corporate for my style but I’d probably wear it to a museum or out to a cafe when I want a more preppy look.

sweater, white button down, jeans, black boots, tote bag

Time to break out the multi-color sweater! I paired this with the button down which helped make this outfit super warm. I also did a little French tuck with the sweater which you can see in the video.

black cardigan, jeans, brown bodysuit, black boots, black bag for travel capsule wardrobe

This bodysuit is warm enough so I don’t think I would need a layer depending on the weather. But if you do, the black cardigan is a great option. In the video, I show you how to tuck this cardigan for an even cuter look than simply wearing it buttoned up or open.

brown bodysuit, white button down, jeans, black boots, tote bag

This is a great casual outfit, especially if you style the button-down half-tucked into your pants. I love doing a half-tuck, it really balances the outfit well without being overly serious.

black cardigan, brown bodysuit, black pants, black boots, black bag for travel capsule wardrobe

This is probably one of my favorite outfits on this list. Can you tell I love dark neutrals?! The balance of the brown and black is perfection. Plus, I love these wide-leg cargo pant.

white top, black pants, black bag, black boots

These are two of my favorite pieces put together. Especially with the black bag, this look is the closest thing to perfection in my eyes.

black cardigan, black pants, black top, black boots, black bag for travel capsule wardrobe

I feel so at home with an all-black outfit. I’m trying hard to branch out and wear color but this is truly where I feel at peace (dramatic, yes). You can’t go wrong with this look!

grey top, black pants, black cardigan, black boots, black bag

If you need a little bit of “color” to break up the all-black outfit, simply add the smokey blue/grey top for a bit of contrast.

sweater, black pants, button down, black boots, tote bag

Layering the white button-down under this sweater is the perfect way to stay warm!

black top, black pants, white button down, black boots, black bag

Wearing this button-down half-tucked or folded and tucked (check out the video to see what I mean) is a good option for this look. The black and white is a great contrast of course.

black cardigan, black top, printed pants, black boots, black bag

This is a great option to make these pants the star of the show by balancing them with all-black pieces.

white button down, printed pants, tote bag, black boots for travel capsule wardrobe

A neutral pair of pants with a fun print? You can never go wrong. At first, I tried to pair this with a layer underneath but I didn’t love the look. so I decided to wear it with just the button-down shirt in a half-tuck. This might be a bit chilly, so I do recommend wearing a warm coat with this look if you’ll be heading outside.

black cardigan, printed pants, white button down, black boots, black bag

I really like the contrast of the white and beige so throw a black Caridgan on to balance out the black and you’ll have a cute preppy look.

What jewelry to bring when traveling?

I always bring a few gold rings, bracelets, and a necklace when I’m traveling. Frankly, these are all pieces I wear 24/7 anyway, so I just wear them on the plane. However, to spice up all of these neutral outfits, I always bring a couple of fun earrings to add a bit of personality to my look. Check out this article about my favorite Etsy shops for jewelry to find some great pieces to bring!

How do get wrinkles out when traveling?

Wrinkles are inevitable when packing everything up into a small carry-on. I always bring Downy Wrinkle Refresh Spray on a trip with me. This bottle is TSA-friendly and lasts super long. All you need to do is spray it on your clothes, “wipe” the wrinkles out and the clothes will be smooth and wrinkle-free. If it leaves a wet spot, don’t worry because it will try in a few minutes and won’t leave any type of mark.

Final Thoughts

I hope this article was able to prepare you best for your upcoming trip! This is the perfect travel capsule wardrobe you can refer to for years to come. Thank you for reading!

Cheers, Hailey

shoes for travel

Importance of Shoe Selection

The first and most important thing to consider when building your travel capsule wardrobe is…the shoes. We have to cover these first because they will determine the outfits we’re building throughout the rest of this post! The key to the perfect travel capsule is to minimize what you’re bringing and to make sure that everything you pack mix and match together. Consider your shoes as an anchor for your travel wardrobe. Starting with shoes will help you narrow down your outfit choices and plan practical, stylish outfits more easily. I recommend three pairs of neutral, versatile shoes. I recommend you pack a pair of sneakers, flats, and wedges or heeled shoe. Throughout this post, you will see these three pairs of shoes styled with every outfit… (BTW, for those that don’t like or can’t wear heels, swap the heels for another pair of flats.)

minimal travel capsule

Dolce Vita Sneakers

Instead of a basic pair of running sneakers, consider wearing elevated sneakers like this pair by Dolce Vita. They have cool stitching throughout and actually look very similar to my Chloe sneakers that I wear all the time…but are just as comfortable and a fraction of the price! They’re a very neutral, versatile, wearable off-white color, super comfortable, and have a small platform (1 1/2 inches) for some added height which I love .

dolce vita braided sandals

Dolce Vita Braided Flat Sandals

For a travel capsule wardrobe, you should look for a pair of flats in your skin shade that has a little extra design detail that makes them more stylish. These Dolce Vita flats are close to my skin tone and have a pretty braided detail. The braiding makes them even more stylish without compromising fashion or function. They are also easy to get on and off.

dolce vita braided wedges

Dolce Vita Wedges

Next, you’ll want a pair of wedges or heeled sandals for dinners or when you want to feel a little more dressed up. These wedges are also by Dolce Vita, easy to get on and off, super comfortable, and they color is so neutral that they’ll go with everything!

White Tank & White Jeans Travel Capsule Wardrobe

White Tank & White Jeans

The white tank had a resurgence in 2022 and it’s still going strong. White tanks have never been out of style, but they’re even more popular now than ever. Plus, it’s a wardrobe basic you’ll wear beyond travel especially for layering. In the outfits above, I’m wearing a white tank by Evereve that’s SO good. It has thick enough straps that are set out a little further on the shoulder so you can still wear a regular bra with it (big win!). I paired it with some white jeans by Good American that are cropped (perfect for petites!), aren’t see-through, and are very comfortable. They run a little small, so I’d order up one size. You can see that they work perfectly with the sneakers, flats, and wedges too!

Sizing: All of the pieces in this capsule run true to size except the white jeans and the denim skirt (below).

What Bottoms to Pack for Travel

What Bottoms to Pack for Travel

A quick note about what bottoms you pack for travel … another anchor for your travel wardrobe is your bottoms, just like shoes. This means that everything you pack for your next trip should work around your shoes and your bottoms. In this capsule, I’m featuring a pair of white jeans, a denim skirt, and black wide-leg pants. But in your travel capsule, you might include or add light-wash jeans, denim shorts, a flowy skirt, and/or white wide-leg pants…or whatever you prefer. These are simply meant to give you an idea of how your travel capsule can/should work!

Black Tank for travel

Black Tank & White Jeans

Next up is a black tank by LNA that’s very soft, lightweight, and breathable. It’s super easy to throw on with whatever bottoms you’ve packed and feel stylish, put-together, and comfortable. It has a cool cutout detail at the chest, a ribbed fabric, it’s sleeveless and you can wear a regular bra! This is perfect for those super hot travel activities you have planned. I paired it with the same white Good American jeans and all three pairs of shoes. We’ll be repeating this formula to show you just how versatile each piece is and to give you ideas on how to put together your travel capsule. These first two looks are very casual and would be perfect for running errands, sightseeing, lunch, etc.

By the way, we also posted a video over on YouTube if you want to see these outfits in motion you can find that here .

Travel Capsule Wardrobe

White Tee & White Jeans

Next up is this cool Nation LTD tee. I own a few tees from this brand and love the design details they add that make them look more like blouses. They elevate a look more than a normal white tee and are much more fashion-forward. This tee has a subtle puff sleeve, ruching in the front, and a flattering v-neckline. I styled the tee half-tucked into the white jeans with a brown belt but  you could easily leave it untucked too. By the way, if you don’t love puff sleeves, Nation LTD makes so many amazing elevated t-shirt options. You can look at other styles here .

Travel Capsule Wardrobe for women

White Eyelet Top & White Jeans

This white eyelet top by Evereve is a beautiful, high-quality piece that’s perfect for your summer wardrobe. I love the pretty eyelet details, the subtle puff sleeves, the breathable and lightweight cotton, and the length! The hemline is short enough so you can leave it untucked and it’ll still look polished.  The top could also double as your swimsuit coverup, which is a packing pro tip! 😉 I styled the top again with the white jeans and all three pairs of shoes. See how versatile these shoes are? The exact top is no longer available, but I linked a similar one below.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe Women Over 40

Blue & White Striped Top & White Jeans

Next up is this blue and white striped top by LNA. I love how classic and versatile this piece is and I know I’ll wear it all summer long. One of my favorite things about this top is that there’s a button at the sleeve that allows you to raise the sleeve without actually cuffing it, which is really lovely and looks very cool. At the hemline, you can cinch it and tie it to give it a cool bubble hem look. But I cinched it, tied it, and tucked it into the same white jeans and sneakers, flats, and wedges.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Printed Blouse & White Jeans

Farm Rio is a brand I’ve fallen in love with! They make vibrant, beautiful prints in amazing high-quality fabrics… and the fits are amazing. This blouse is bold and beautiful, feels very summery and tropical, but is also very wearable. The neckline and sleeves are very flattering and forgiving. It’s also 100% cotton and very lightweight so even though it has long sleeves, it’s very breathable. (While the exact top is no longer available, I’ll link some similar options below.) I’m wearing it with the white jeans and really love this combination of the bright colors against the white. And of course…I added the brown belt and styled it with the sneakers, flats, and wedges. Are you seeing the pattern here? 😉

Black Pants different outfits

Black Pants

I wanted to give you another bottoms option that wasn’t a pair of jeans, so I’m styling a pair of black, wide-leg pants by Evereve. They are a super lightweight, sporty fabric, they have pockets, and they’re very comfortable. They have the feel of yoga pants but the look of smart, stylish trousers. These pants run a little long on me (I’m 5’4”) but you can see how they look with the sneakers and the wedges above. I styled them with 5 of the 6 tops which shows just how versatile they are! The exact pair is no longer available, but you’ll see another great pair of similar black trousers linked below. Swapping the shoes can also completely change the dressiness of these pants. You can also see in the last two looks that styling the pants with the black tank and simply changing the shoes from sneakers to wedges really elevates it and makes it a dressier look you could wear to a nice dinner.

agolde denim skirt

White Tank & Mini Skirt

As I mentioned above, your capsule wardrobe can include whatever bottoms you prefer. You can even add a few extra bottoms like a skirt, denim shorts, or light-wash jeans. But for this travel capsule, I’m sharing this Agolde denim mini skirt. When I first ordered this, I wasn’t sure if I’d like it…but as it turns out… I LOVE it! It’s more comfortable than denim shorts, it has a cool pointed hemline, and I love the fit. I did size up one size and it fits perfectly. You can wear this skirt with pretty much anything this summer. First, I’m wearing it with the white tank, which is something that’s a little more youthful and shows a lot of skin, but you can easily add a cardigan or lightweight blazer to add coverage. I’d wear this on really hot sight-seeing days!

Black Tank & Mini Skirt

Black Tank & Mini Skirt

Next up is the black LNA tank with the fun cutout styled with the denim shirt. I love the combination of the black tank with the brown belt…yes, you CAN wear black and brown together! It’s a beautiful color combo you shouldn’t shy away from. And again…this look is fabulous with the sneakers, wedges, and flats!

White Tee & Mini Skirt

White Tee & Mini Skirt

The denim skirt also works with the Nation LTD white tee AND the sneakers, wedges, and flats.

White Eyelet Top & Mini Skirt Travel Capsule Wardrobe

White Eyelet Top & Mini Skirt

Next, the white eyelet top. You can easily tuck this into the denim skirt for an effortlessly cool look. If you’re worried about getting hot, wear the white tank underneath and open up the top for even more breathability.

Striped Top & Mini Skirt Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Blue & White Striped Top & Mini Skirt

This striped top also works so well with the denim skirt! I love this combination so much because of the juxtaposition of the more masculine shirt and the feminine skirt. It’s such a gorgeous combination! Style it with the sneakers for a long day of walking, with the sandals for a casual lunch when you want to feel comfortable, or the wedges for a dressier lunch or when you just want to feel a little more elevated.

Printed Blouse & Mini Skirt Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Printed Blouse & Mini Skirt

Lastly, I’m wearing the printed Farm Rio dress with the mini skirt, brown belt, and all three pairs of shoes!

Black Jumpsuit travel looks

Black Jumpsuit

I wanted to share a piece you can bring with you on your trip that will easily transition from day to night and feels a little dressier. This black Evereve jumpsuit is something you could wear to a dressier dinner. It’s SO good. The top fits snugly so you will feel very secure, and you don’t have to do any yanking or pulling. You tie it at the back and you’re good to go…you don’t even have to wear a bra! The fabric is ruched and thick enough at the top, so you feel very covered up. But it’s still very soft on the skin, lightweight, and breathable. Plus, it’s very wrinkle-resistant, a must for travel. The bodice is fitted, which is a great contrast to the flowy bottoms. The best part about this jumpsuit is the hemline…because it’s a little shorter, I can wear it with sneakers during the day and swap my shoes with the wedges for a dressy, sexier look at night. The newest version of this jumpsuit has bra-friendly straps and all the same flattering features. Linking it below!

Printed Midi Dress travel outfit

Printed Midi Dress

The last piece is this gorgeous dress by Farm Rio. It’s a bit of a wild card but I love to throw one special piece like this into my suitcase whenever I travel. It’s important to have a piece that you’re excited to wear and that makes me feel happy and beautiful. The beautiful thing about this dress is that you can wear it from day to night and with all three of the shoes I’ve featured. I love the fun, vibrant print, the flattering empire waist, and adjustable tie shoulder straps. It’s also smocked in the back, so you have some room and it’s very comfortable. The fabric is 100% cotton so it’s lightweight and breathable, perfect when you want a flowy, breezy look for your hot summer vacation.

Jewelry & Accessories for travel

Jewelry & Accessories

My approach to jewelry and accessories during travel is to bring impactful pieces that aren’t too over the top. In all of these looks, I’m wearing two pieces of jewelry by Gorjana. The first is this cool chain necklace that packs just the right amount of punch. The second is a pair of classic gold hoops , which you really can’t go wrong with! I also showed a brown belt with most of the looks. It’s a simple way to add polish and style to every outfit. Because the rest of the travel capsule is so minimal, you will have space in your suitcase to add more jewelry if you want. I would probably also add a few bracelets, another pair of more glam earrings, and a statement necklace.

I would also add two pairs of sunglasses, one black and one brown pair. Also, make sure that one is a more glam option (like oversized square frames) and one is sportier (like aviators). If you have the room, I’d definitely add a dress or two, maybe an extra pair of shoes, a hat, and some extra bottoms options. But, again, if you want to keep things minimal, this is plenty! And, as I said above, you’ll even have room for shopping!

I needed this!!! I’ve just booked a week at a 5 star resort in Costa Rica (Jan 2025!!). I’m super excited, and this gives me some great ideas. I always travel carry only, so I’m used to packing minimally. This is a great help Thank, love ALL the posts and videos very much. Ramona Toronto (area), Canada

Thank you for this post and video. I really like that you showed how each item mixed and matched with each other. Most of the time I find my capsule boring, but adding that pop of color in the colorful blouse nod the blue pinstripe shirt gives a wide variety of looks. I’ll be going to a destination wedding next month in Prague, Czech Republic and later a river cruise to a few Eastern European countries. I’m looking into my closet to see what I can come up with. I think this may be the best packing I’ll do for a trip. I’ll have to wait until August to see what the weather will be like. You have given me some wonderful ideas!

I’m so glad this was helpful for you, Liana! Those pops of color do make such a difference when packing a very well curated capsule. Best of luck as you prepare for your upcoming trip!! ~Erin xo

  • Pingback: Look Cool & Stylish with These 6 Monochrome Outfits for Summer

Thanks for the travel posts this year. I am traveling to Portland, OR this summer, so I’ve been looking at your safari videos/posts. Lots of hiking will be done for sure. We will also have some days of shopping and site seeing, so this last post has given me some new ideas.

So glad this is helpful for you, Sandra! Have a great time on your upcoming trip!! ~Erin xo

Finally a practical stylish travel capsule! Yes Molly, you can wear white pants-Tide Stick! Plus you have a back up of black pants. I just returned from 2 months travel with one carry on. Shoes are always the toughest packing bulk. I cheat with a small foldable shoe bag packed away. I then wear the bulkiest shoes-booties or my tennis shoes-into my backpack that goes under the seat. Hotel shower caps are the perfect shoe cover! You’re welcome! Thank you Erin for the great looks! Using this as my template next trip!

All great tips, Arlee! So glad this post will be helpful for your next trip!! Hope you had a great time on your recent trip! ~Erin xo

This is a great starting point for packing for a summer trip. Which combination would you wear on the plane and what outerwear/layer would you bring? It’s always cold on the plane, in restaurants and it isn’t always 80degrees and sunny.

I’ve got a whole video specific to “Travel Day” coming in a few weeks that will cover all of these details better, but I’d go with the sneakers (always wear your biggest/heaviest shoes on travel day – plus they are comfy!) black pants, and black tank with a jacket or blazer as a third layer as well. I’d definitely add one jacket to this list to have the cooler temps/ AC covered! ~Erin xo

I can’t imagine keeping all of that white clean during travel especially the pants. My life style means more kid friendly/dirt resistance. I love the look of white on white. Just super impractical.

I hear this a lot – but I really never have a problem with stains on the white pants! I love to wear them while traveling and will just spot clean anything right away if I do have a spill. BUT…you should always adjust style tips to fit YOU best! Thanks for reading, Molly! ~Erin xo

Great ideas, but I feel that 18 outfit ideas that all go with 3 pairs of shoes would be a better description.

Appreciate your feedback, Jenn. Hope this gives you some great ideas for your next trip! ~Erin xo

Thanks for this! I’m using your Africa packing trip for a trip I am taking on Saturday to Peru to climb the Inca trail to Machu Picchu (I will NOT be wearing those ugly Merrill hiking boots–Sam Edelman combat boots for me :-)). Long time watcher of your YouTube channel-thanks!

It is also important to remember that the weather is going to vary greatly depending on your location.

Winters near the ocean tend to be mild and rainy. Generally, it gets colder as you move inland. Average high temperatures range from 25-40°F but can drop significantly at night (remember that nightfall comes early in most of Europe). Your trip can get pretty miserable if you don’t dress properly. This guide will teach you everything you need to know for staying warm and comfortable.

The base layer is very important. It wicks away moisture/sweat from your body (yes, you sweat in the cold). This material pulls the moisture away from your body and transfers it to the next layer of clothing (where it evaporates more quickly). Base layers need to be worn tight against the skin. They come in a few materials:

  • Synthetics: These materials transfer moisture extremely well. They are the top choice for many winter travelers. Synthetics do start smelling quickly so it is important to wash them pretty often. Some synthetics have magic voodoo technology that helps inhibit smell so you might want to check that out.
  • Merino Wool:  Merino wool is another popular material choice for base layers. It transfers moisture and retains heat well. Cheap wool can often itchy so many people don’t like it. However, higher-end merino wool feels good against the skin but can get expensive. Merino wool does a great job at repelling odors so you can wear it a few days without worrying about getting funky.
  • Silk: Silk isn’t too popular anymore but it does a good job. Silk can be difficult to care for so many people prefer the more robust synthetic material or merino wool. It is also fairly expensive.
  • Cotton: Cotton is popular, but it is a very poor base layer. Cotton absorbs a lot of moisture but doesn’t wick it away — it just holds damp material next to your skin. This is the complete opposite of what you want in a base layer and it will actually make you colder.

The best base layers are made by Smartwool  and  Icebreaker , but there are plenty of other options available .

Don’t forget about underwear! Read this article about the  best travel underwear .

Mid Layer

The mid layers are the everyday items that you’d normally wear. It can be a t-shirt, button-up shirt, light sweater, etc. This provides a little extra warmth and can be worn alone if the weather is warm enough.

Insulating Layer

The real warmth comes from the insulating layer. Depending on the temperature, you can wear multiple insulating layers. In fact, multiple thin layers are better than one thick layer. If you get too hot it is easy to remove layers until you are comfortable (and vice versa). Insulating layers should be a little loose to allow for better insulation. They can be a variety of material — The most popular include:

  • Wool: Wool is a great choice. It has been keeping people warm for thousands of years. Wool will still keep you warm even if it gets damp. It is bulky, though, so it adds some weight.
  • Synthetic (Thinsulate): While not as good as wool/fleece it is cheap and does a fairly good job.

europe winter travel wardrobe

  • Cotton: Cotton is a cheap option but it won’t keep you very warm. I would use it as an extra layer in combination with wool or fleece.

Outer/Shell Layer

The shell layer keeps away the elements (wind, snow, rain, etc). The shell layer is usually in the form of a jacket and it should block the wind and be waterproof. Ideally, the shell layer lets moisture through to the outside (look for jackets that are labeled “breathable”), while not letting wind and water pass through from the outside. There is a multitude of jackets that fit this criterion, but there are no jackets that can be totally waterproof and extremely breathable — there will always be some kind of trade-off. Common shell layers:

  • Hard Shell: Hard shell jackets are waterproof but offer limited breathability. They don’t let all the evaporated sweat escape, so it could lead to decreased comfort. The high quality (expensive) jackets tend to be more breathable.
  • North Face SoftShell Jackets
  • Marmot Softshell
  • Mountain Hardwear Softshell Jackets

Heavy Winter Coats

Heavy winter coats are bulky and a pain to pack, but you’ll probably want one if you’re traveling to anywhere that gets really cold. You’re going to spend a lot of time outdoors so no point in freezing the entire time. I suggest monitoring the temperature to determine whether you’ll need a heavy winter coat.

Most people don’t give too much attention to their socks, but they are very important — especially in the winter. Look for socks that are made of wool or special synthetic material. I always bring a lot of socks because they have a tendency to start stinking. Unfortunately, nice socks can be a little expensive, and most people would rather spend the money on something sexier — like a jacket. I suggest you spend a little extra money to get a few nice pairs. Your feet and your roommates will thank you. Look for socks that are:

backapcking socks winter

  • Quick Drying: It is pretty easy to wash your socks in the sink so you want a pair that will dry overnight (about 6-8 hours).
  • Odor Eliminating: Some synthetic socks have special anti-bacterial features that help eliminate odor. Wool socks also do this naturally.
  • Avoid Cotton: Cotton socks don’t provide much warmth and retain moisture/sweat. The excess moisture will make your feet cold and encourage the growth of bacteria.

Here is a list of our favorite  winter socks for traveling Europe .

Waterproof Shoes/Boots

European winters are usually more rainy than snowy. You should really consider getting a pair of waterproof boots or shoes. Boots are bulky and heavy, but they are the best in deep snow/slushy city streets. Another option is waterproof hiker-style shoes. Granted, these boots/shoes are not going to be stylish, but wet feet will really ruin your day.

You probably don’t need bulky ski gloves, but a nice pair of gloves will be welcome on a chilly day. I suggest thinner gloves or those “mitten-glove combo” things so you can still use your camera without having to take your gloves off.

I found that wearing a scarf really helped keep me warm. There are a million styles/materials, so I just suggest getting one that feels and looks good.

Style at a certain age.

europe winter travel wardrobe

yesterday, i shared my five must-have travel wardrobe staples and my goal to pack light for our trip to europe. read it here  if you missed that post. today, it’s all about my black and white capsule wardrobe. but first, here are a few items that make it into my carry-on. don’t ever pack anything other than clothes and toiletries in your checked luggage; anything of value is kept close. for this trip, i splurged and purchased a new marc jacobs floral print sport tote. it’s polyurethane and easily wiped down. it has two sets of handles – long and short – and a zipper. since my wardrobe color palette is black and white, i went for a pop of color and pattern with my handbag. an elegant  michael kors wallet with a flip lock flap closure keeps me organized. but this is what typically finds its way inside my travel tote.

  • portable charger
  • lint roller
  • mints

a survival kit for the long airplane ride is a must. this is what i carry at all times, wherever I go.

  • hand sanitizer
  • lip balm
  • zzzQuil melatonin gummies,
  • tide bleach pen
  • hand and face wipes
  • not shown is a travel first aid kit with band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and gauze pads.

gingham raincoat ( similar here ) |  black blazer  |  denim jacket

three jackets made the grade. with rain, in the forecast, a raincoat was a no-brainer. this gingham coat was lighter than a traditional trench, and it’s black and white. a blazer and denim jacket should get me by with temps in the seventies. plus, a blazer is perfect to wear to dinner in the evening.

henley dress  | denim shirtdress ( similar here )

two dresses were packed. the henley tee shirt dress is a dream to wear and looks cute with sneakers. it will be perfect when the temperatures reach the eighties. the denim shirtdress flies solo with black booties but pulls double-duty as a duster over jeans.

chinos  |  toothpick jeans  |  white denim

pants get the most wear and tear on trips as they’re worn multiple times. dark rinse denim hides a multitude of travel sins. but i have a tide bleach pen in case the white denim falls on hard times. chinos are comfortable. and black pants? what more can we say about pants that go with everything?

floral maxi skirt |  white corset skirt

many of us would forego skirts. but i love to wear them especially when the temps climb into the seventies and eighties. this floral maxi skirt is lightweight, looks adorable, and will be perfect for evening. the white corset skirt looks fantastic with espadrilles or sneakers. i think it will be on style repeat all vacation long.

stripe tunic  |  polka dot ruffle  |  gingham camp shirt |  chambray shirt | sleeveless white blouse

the rule of thumb is two tops to one bottom. counting my tees i have ten. but one more shirt can potentially make it into my suitcase. what do you think?  i just might be fine with the chosen blouses.

sneakers  | espadrilles  |  backless loafers  |  black booties  |  metallic sandals

there may be one too many pairs of shoes for this trip. but the sneakers are worn on the plane. and mr. style might bail me out and pack one pair in his suitcase… all-in-all i think i’m ready to jet off to paris tomorrow night. what do you think?

Looks like a smashing lineup! No scarves?

Beth- lovely! First off, safe travels to you and Mr. Style. I’m betting you’ve packed a scarf or two and a few pieces of jewelry so am looking forward to seeing how you’ll switch things up day to day and add pops by way of your fabulous accessories. I’d like to know what you plan to carry as a day bag while out seeing the sights. I always struggle with finding the right mix of functionality in a cross body bag that can hold maps, water bottle etc with some modicum of style. I’m assuming the Marc Jacobs bag is for onboard travel. Thanks and bon voyage.

If it was me, I would probably cut down on the number of tops – for a 14 day trip you have some items you may only wear once or twice. Tops are also an opportunity to add some colour – say replace the white/black/grey tees with a bright red tee. My rule of thumb is make sure the tops work with most or all of the bottoms: that way the total number of potential outfits is at least (number of tops) x (number of bottoms). It’s always good to leave room for vacation purchases!

I would love for you to show a picture of your packed bag so I can see how you get all of that in there! Have a wonderful trip.

Beth, You will have a fqbulous time in Paris while looking Tres chic!

I’d skip heels, mules, skirts and anything white. Those are things I wouldn’t wear on a two-week trip. I need shoes with good support due to a ridiculous amount of walking. And I know myself — it takes concentration and technique to walk the cobbles without twisting an ankle. White wouldn’t last a day without getting dirty.

After I get home, I don’t like wearing my travel clothes for a good long time. Sooo tired of them! Maybe this is why I like to travel when the seasons are changing, so I can tuck those things away for a few months afterwards.

This is the color scheme I have chosen for a 7 day cruise from Boston to Montreal

. I am not taking any dresses or skirts as I just don’t often wear them. My face creams . make-up, and toiletries take up so much room. How do you pack yours? I love the packing bags we got a few years ago as it keeps everything more organized! Enjoy your trip. Looking forward to seeing how you put your clothes together! I love your style!

Thanks for this great post – I am leaving this week for a trip to Croatia and Slovenia and also chose black/white/navy for my travel wardrobe. I swear by packing cubes and can fit everything for a 12 day vacation into a 25” suitcase and a small carry on – I always pack a change of clothing and pjs in my carry on in case my luggage is lost or late. Have a great trip!

Good morning, Miss Beth! You’re going to look smashing on your European vacay with Mr. Style. So excited for you! Can’t wait to see your photos!

May I ask the brand of your slip-on mules with the tassels? Thank you!

Bon Voyage!

Great post re packing light. My husband would love to see what mr. style is packing and what size bag.

Great post, Beth! I love seeing your choices for the trip! I may have missed it, but how many days is the trip and do you have a separate outfit for travel, aside from the items shown? How about accessories, like bags, scarves, and jewelry? I appreciate seeing the different things for the carry-on bag. It’s easy to see how well all of these items would create a mix and match wardrobe for the duration. Do you ever find need to do laundry on your trip? Do you have items that particularly wash well by hand, if needed to do your own wash? Sounds like a great vacation!! Have fun!

I am on the tail end of a 2 week Adriatic vacation and am in Paris. We are same age and southern Atlantic coasters. Temps are rapidly climbing. I strongly recommend you leave behind the black booties and mules. Stan Smith Style sneakers rule the streets! The light tees/light tops with sleeves will get the most use. Consider switching heavy blazer for lighter cardigan linen topper. Not seeing any white bottoms yet in major european cities but light blue denim is popular. Have a fabulous time! Remember you can always shop to fill in gaps! Love your blog!

I am going to Paris too at the end of May for 10 days!!!! I was thinking about taking the ZZZquil pills – do they work? I’m dreading the flight over.

I’m starting to think about what I am taking and I noticed my color palate is the same, black, white and denim. We are twins!!!!! I hope you have a wonderful trip. We need to trade stories when we get back!!!

Looks great! Have a blast. Only thing I’d add is an outlet adapter for overseas. And don’t forget to call credit card companies to let them know you’re heading off. I always remember that as I did forget once and freaked! hahahaaaa. Oh–and when I last traveled, to Greece and Turkey, I did bring along a water bottle. Carried it with me on the plane too

Fabulous post! Have fun!

How to Create a Minimalist Travel Wardrobe That Isn’t Bland

How to Create a Minimalist Travel Wardrobe That Isn't Bland

If baggage fees and heavy luggage are weighing you down, it’s time to embrace the minimalist travel wardrobe trend. Before I created my travel capsule wardrobe, packing felt stressful. It was a guessing game of what outfits to bring, and how much I could stuff into my suitcase before the zippers split open.

Flat lay of travel capsule wardrobe, including striped shoes, straw hat, and tank top.

Today, I can pack for a week in a backpack in under 10 minutes!

Before we go any further, I’d like to clear up a common misconception about minimalist travel clothes. Your vacation wardrobe does not need to be black, white, and bland.

I’ve read too many articles that push colorless clothes as the ultimate mix and match travel wardrobe. While it’s certainly easier to pair monochromatic items, it definitely takes the fun out of it. I don’t know about you, but I enjoy wearing colorful pieces when I’m on vacation!

Fortunately, you can look great and still travel ultralight if you’re strategic about what and how you pack. I’ll be sharing my super-easy rule for coordinating vacation clothes later in the post.

Steps to Build Your Minimalist Travel Wardrobe

Start with an ultralight travel packing list, my travel capsule wardrobe for europe (and beyond), invest in travel capsule wardrobe essentials.

  • Use a carryon backpack for traveling without luggage

Stack of vintage suitcases.

In the world of minimalist travel, there’s only room to bring the essentials. And the best way to keep yourself from over-packing is to create an ultralight travel packing list.

Your list will be unique to you, because everyone has their own special needs. For example, I’m fine with using any provided hair products, but I have to bring my own face wash. I also have to wear supportive shoes, so I can’t just walk around in a pair of flats for a whole trip.

Here’s an example of what goes in my minimalist travel backpack  for a one week trip:

  • 4 pairs of socks (two of which are re-wearable SmartWool )
  • 2 sets of pajamas
  • 7 pairs of underwear
  • Hairties and bobby pins
  • Eye makeup (I don’t typically wear anything else)
  • Face cleanser
  • Moisturizer
  • Dry shampoo ( Living Proof’s Perfect Hair Day is a must for my oily hair)
  • Portable battery pack (I don’t travel without my Anker PowerCore )
  • Universal travel adapter ( Dandelion and BESTEK are my favorites)
  • Headphones (ditching wired headphones for Jabra bluetooth earbuds changed my life)

Choose coordinating minimalist travel clothes

The real secret to creating a minimalist travel wardrobe is learning to think outside of “outfits”.

Many people I know pack individual outfits for each day, and maybe an extra dress and a pair of heels “just in case”. But the beauty of a travel capsule wardrobe is that everything can be mixed and matched.

Instead of 7 distinct outfits, you have 7-10 pieces that all work together no matter how you pair them.

The easiest way to do this is by following the neutral rule.

With the neutral rule, you either wear all neutral on top, or all neutral on bottom. That means there’s plenty of room for color in every outfit!

Personally, I travel with black and grey jeans, and I pack brightly colored tops. But if you have a favorite floral skirt or red pants, bring along some black, white, or grey tops to match.

Woman wearing mix and match travel wardrobe of black jeans, red hat, and blue backpack.

Another option is to choose complementary colors.

These are hues that sit opposite one another on the color wheel, like blue and orange. And when you pair them together, they create outfits with impact.

You should still mix some neutrals into your minimalist travel wardrobe. But focusing on complementary colors means you can bring a pink skirt and green top without fear of clashing.

Red and white top with blue jeans make great minimalist travel clothes.

Finally, pastel hues make great minimalist travel clothes.

The softness of the colors makes them easy to mix and match. When choosing pieces, stick to faded greens, pinks, blues, and yellows. Some people think pastels are only for spring, but who could say no to a powder blue sweater in winter?

Close-up of pastel colored sweaters on white hangars.

If you follow me on Instagram , you know I mostly travel around Europe. I also carry a camera bag and tripod, and tend to clock over 20,000 steps every day. As you might imagine, I don’t fill my bag with dresses and heels!

Comfort is #1 for me, but I don’t want to stick out in a city of well-dressed people. Thus, my travel capsule wardrobe for Europe balances comfort and style.

Here’s what I pack for a trip to Europe (and pretty much everywhere):

2 Pairs of Jeans

Instead of traditional blue, I opt for pairs of black or grey skinny jeans. They go with any top and can be dressed up or down.

If you’re more into relaxed fit, these Levi’s are super comfortable and look cute with a tucked-in or cropped top.

Casual Dress

If the weather is right, I like to bring a fun yet casual dress. Having a dress on hand also means I won’t feel out of place if we decide to have a nice dinner.

Black Cardigan

When exploring Europe’s beautiful cathedrals and scenic overlooks, a cardigan is a must. Sometimes I’ll tie it around my waist on the plane to save space in my bag.

Black & White Striped Long Sleeve Shirt

This neutral staple is in heavy rotation for my everyday and travel wardrobes. I like the long sleeve option, because you can wear it all day without getting too hot or cold.

3 Colorful Tops

I follow the “neutral rule” for bottoms, so I brighten my outfits with vibrant tops. I tend to wear 3/4 length sleeves, or pair a short/sleeveless top with my black cardigan.

Ballet Flats

I wear tennis shoes on the plane and for most of my trips. But I always keep a pair of nude ballet flats in my backpack for nicer occasions.

Save me for later!

Minimalist travel wardrobe flat lay with jeans, sweater, and accessories, with text overlay - "how to stop overpacking and travel light".

If you’ve embraced the minimalist lifestyle , you know the value of investing in versatile, quality items. Having things like wrinkle free travel clothes or convertible dresses are key to packing light.

I always shop my closet before adding any new purchases. But if you don’t already own the right pieces, here are some travel capsule wardrobe essentials to buy:

  • Three-in-one jacket : Look for one that’s weather-proof and hooded so you can skip the umbrella.
  • Comfortable & neutral shoes : Choose a pair that work with pants and skirts/dresses, like classic white Adidas .
  • Wrinkle-resistant fabrics: Materials like wool, polyester, and knits naturally repel wrinkles, so no wasting precious vacation time ironing!

Use a carry on backpack for traveling without luggage

Black carry on backpack with items for traveling without luggage.

The best thing about having a minimalist travel wardrobe is that it can easily fit into a carry on. I can pack for a week in a backpack, which is far more comfortable to carry around than a roller bag.

I’ve written an entire post on my favorite minimalist travel backpacks , along with dozens of tips for traveling without luggage.

My Tortuga Setout is spacious, comfortable, and opens like a suitcase. It was an investment, but it’s built to last and makes traveling with only a backpack a real joy.

Check out my review of the Tortuga Setout vs. Osprey Farpoint for more details.

I hope I’ve convinced you that creating a minimalist travel wardrobe is easy! Say goodbye to heavy suitcases and monochrone outfits, and hello to traveling light and colorfully.

I am preparing to take an 8 month contract at a resort in Alaska. I will part of the administrative team which requires a business casual wardrobe. I will be living on the property in a small studio and will not have much room for storage. Any suggestions that you may be able to offer, or guidance points to look for as I prepare to embark on this incredible journey.

What an amazing opportunity, Betty! Under-bed storage boxes are great for small spaces. If you have a closet or a narrow space, you could add a tension rod (like the ones for shower curtains) to create additional hanging space.

You could also use the shower organizers to hang from under the mattress to put shoes in also. Would have to cut it some to fit under mattress and hang over / under the mattress but it works.

Great article! Where did those brown shoes in the photo with the yellow sweater come from 😍

Thanks Kaitlyn! Sadly this is a stock flat lay, so I don’t know where to buy those cute shoes. I believe they’re brown leather Oxfords, so maybe you’ll find some in a shop near you!

Finally a minimalist packing list that is minimalist. Just last year I went to southern Africa for 3 months and took nothing more. I’m not a kid either – 69 and it is still highly doable.

Thanks for your feedback, Karen! I’m always glad to hear stories from other minimalist travelers.

Thank you, Chelsea! Every overseas trip has taught me to pack lighter and lighter. What I love about your suggestions for the wardrobe is bringing in color. I do not like the minimalists lists that use only drab colors. I am in my 70s now and with pain issues I can no longer do the backpacking but I did invest in a very lightweight roller suitcase (carry-on size) that I use for even my 3-month Europe trips. The other item is a small daypack that works as my personal item for flights and contains purse items and essentials for the plane so that I don’t have to get into my suitcase on the plane.

Those are great tips, Jane! I don’t think people realize how much unnecessary stuff they pack for travel. Most are baffled that I can travel for weeks with just a backpack.

I want to hear more about your three month Europe trips! You’re living my dream…

Hi, Chelsea

Personally, I never pack pajamas for trips that are 7 days or less, even for my 12-day trips to Europe and Japan.. I mostly packed no-wrinkle T’s with shorts that could be used for sleep as well as regular outfits.. This was specially helpful when we flew low cost flights to Europe with only 10kg of total carry-on allowance..

Thanks for the useful list. Just finished a multi-week French adventure and packed with this list! Did laundry once, and my bag is currently full of funk but that would have been easily correctable if I’d stayed longer and needed to do more laundry. I bought a corkscrew/bottle opener tool for about 3 euros at a grocery store when I first arrived. The little foil cutter knife worked for sausages too, so that plus a spoon was all I needed for all kinds of picnics. Therefore I’d add a grapefruit spoon (serrated, for scooping melon or whatever else you like), and a corkscrew as an optional item if checking the bag and inclined to use one. Travel-sized Febreze was a huge help too, and my cute scarf was ideal for dressing up the basics.

I would add a silk scarf. My husband has gifted me a few and I always take one. If it’s cold, it warms my neck. If it’s 94 in Rome (last month), it can be dipped in the fountains and draped on my neck. If I want to dress up my outfit, it works. If my neck is chafing against my purse strap, it provides a buffer. If I want to portage a snack, it can be the wrapper. If you have an accident, (ahem, of many types in my family), it can help wipe/clean/bandage.

What a fantastic idea! I always considered silk scarfs a frivolous accessory (unless I’m going to Paris!). Thank you for the tip!

I wish I could be that carefree. I am going to Scotland in September and the weather can change in an instant. I am going to pack some summer clothes and some fall clothes. Rain coat, rain boots, silk as well as a warm scarf. I tend to get a soar throat easily. Also PJs, T-shirts, a couple sweaters, underwear, socks, walking shoes, slacks, leggings and lots of Anti-acids for my poor wee tummy and Tylenol for my arthritis. To me that is packing light! He! He!

I think when you go to a climate like that, you do have to pack for two seasons! Everything you mentioned can cross over a bit or can be used several ways. Scarves are always my favorite thing for warmth or cute accessory instead of jewelry (and I’m a jewelry lover!). Suggestion: I like to lay everything out on the guest bed for several days. See what’s really needed. It’s also a great way to see what color theme you might have going and pick scarves accordingly! By laying things out you can see what mixes and matches, too, and gives more outfits if needed! I’ve been to Ireland and England many times but would love to try Scotland! Have an amazing time!

Europe has the best antacids called Reni! Beats Tums any day. I stock up on them when I’m in Ireland. I know they have them in U.K. too.

The Essential European Travel Capsule Packing Guide for Fall 2023

Europe in the fall captures my heart. With its mild weather, fewer tourists than summer, and the added perk of cost-friendly airfares and accommodations, it’s the prime season to journey. If Europe is on your agenda this autumn, then this European Travel Capsule Travel Capsule Packing Guide is a must-read!

Given Europe’s growing popularity and the frequent hiccups in airline services (yes, those pesky lost luggage woes), this Capsule Wardrobe Packing Guide becomes indispensable. Opting for traveling with just a carry-on can save you from unexpected baggage fees, decreases the chance of lost luggage, and spares you those carousel waits. Believe me, as you dart from city to city, be it by plane, train, taxi, or bus, bulky luggage is the last thing you need.

Enter the travel wardrobe capsule. It’s your solution to efficient and light packing for European adventures. Consider my recommendations as a foundation for your carry-on capsule. And if you’re on the hunt for more comprehensive packing insights, don’t miss the freshly revised T he Carry-On Capsule Solution: Essential Guide for Packing for Europe.

Fall Travel Capsule Guide for Europe

Layering is Key

With temperatures fluctuating during the day and night, having layers like tanks , t-shirts , lightweight cardigans , button down oxfords and scarves can help you adjust accordingly. The key to selecting the right layers is knowing the weather conditions of your destination. This is always the first step to planning your travel wardrobe capsule for European travel.

Choose the layers that are right for the weather conditions and build your travel outfits from there. If you expect warmer days and cool nights and mornings a tank with a lightweight cardigan serves as the base for your travel outfit that you can pair with pants or a skirt.

Comfortable Footwear

In Europe, walking is central to the experience, making your shoe choice essential. I cannot stress this enough, expect to walk at least 10,000 steps a day or more. Travel shoes literally make or break your trip! Always select your travel shoes FIRST and plan outfits around them.

Adopt the “ TRAVELISTA DUO/TRIO ” approach:

  • Primary Walking Pair : Durable, neutral-colored sneakers perfect for lengthy explorations. These are your “daily drivers” that you will rely on for the majority of your trip.
  • Secondary Mix-up Pair : Opt for comfy flats, loafers, or versatile boots for cooler days or to switch up your looks. Look for pairs that are comfortable and stylish.
  • Optional Third Pair : Choose based on specific travel activities not met by the first two pairs.

Resist adding “just one more pair.” Typically, 2-3 pairs suffice for European city jaunts. For unique itineraries with special events or adventures, consider specific shoes. Shoes are the heaviest items in your suitcase and take up the most room so it’s best to stick to the absolute essentials.

Versatile Outerwear

A trench coat is the European classic choice. It’s the ultimate in versatility because it’s lightweight and it matches just about anything. It can also be worn dressed up or down. A lightweight version is perfect for fall travel.

If a trench coat doesn’t fit into your style a utility jacket or leather jacket are also good options. A blazer is a good lightweight choice as well but doesn’t offer much protection from the elements. The weather of your destination determines which outerwear options you select.

Essential Clothing Pieces

When selecting travel attire, aim for pieces that pair well with 2-3 other items. While it’s great to create multiple outfits from a few essentials, don’t overthink it. The goal is versatility, especially for longer trips. Avoid single-use items unless they serve a specific event in your itinerary, like a dress for a wedding. Always prioritize multipurpose clothing for a more functional travel capsule.

  • Jeans: A pair of well-fitted jeans can be dressed up or down and are perfectly appropriate for European travel. The right pair should be endlessly versatile and pair easily with your tops and shoe options.
  • Trouser/Dark Pant/Jean: In Europe, women frequently pair trousers with sneakers for a casual look, with trousers and black Converse being a favorite combo. Adapt this style for travel, or opt for dark chinos or black denim jeans if trousers aren’t your preference. Keep bottom silhouettes consistent to ensure compatibility with your footwear, as shoes fitting wide-leg pants might not suit skinny jeans and vice versa.
  • Dresses: A dress is a travelers BFF! Talk about one and done! Find the style that’s right for you and that matches all of your footwear and outerwear. Neutral tones and patterns give you the most versatility. I personally love the midi-length but choose what works best for your personal style. Plan to pair with tights if you’re expecting chilly weather.
  • Tops: Choose from a mix of basic tees, tanks, button downs and blouses to match with your bottoms. Neutral tones provide the most flexibility in planning travel outfit options.
  • Mid-Layers: Choose a lightweight sweater, either a pullover or cardigan style. Cardigans are versatile items because you can easily slip them on and off to deal with changing temperatures. Sweaters made of lightweight merino wool or cashmere aren’t bulky and they are highly insulating. When choosing a mid-layer, check that the color complements with the outerwear and tops you’ve selected.

Accessorize Smartly

Don’t underestimate the power of accessories to transform your neutral travel outfits! Knit pashmina scarfs provide warmth on chilly evenings and a splash of color. Small and colorful print silk scarves seem “oh so chic” and brighten up what may be an otherwise boring outfit. A small “jewelry capsule” of a simple necklace and earrings can help elevate any look.

As far as handbags go, the crossbody is my bag of choice for European travel. Choose one that can hold your daily essentials and that complements your travel clothes. I’ve relied on the Lululemon Festival bag ( Amazon dupe ) time and time again, it magically holds everything I need. I like to bring a black or dark colored neutral for daily travel activities and a more fun option for evening. Another benefit of a crossbody bag is security, you can hold it close to yourself in crowded situations.

Practical Items

Don’t forget travel adapters , essential toiletries , packing cubes and perhaps a compact umbrella or pack-able rain coat for those unpredictable rainy days.
