Devendra Banhart Announces New Album and Tour, Shares Video for New Song “Twin”: Watch

Devendra Banhart has announced his first solo album in four years, following 2019’s Ma . It’s titled Flying Wig and is due out September 22 via Mexican Summer . Below, find the album’s lead single, “ Twin ,” along with its music video directed by Matt Muir . Inspired by 1980s neo-noir films, the visual plays into the song’s theme of finding connection and beauty in cyclical experiences.

Flying Wig was produced by Cate Le Bon and dives into a more synth-focused sound. “She’s the only person I wanted to make this record with,” said Banhart. “We definitely wanted a new sound, electronic yet organic and warm… we wanted to draw out and emphasize the emotional aspect of a synthesizer.” Banhart’s most recent album, 2021’s Refuge , was a collaboration with Noah Georgeson.

After the album’s release, Banhart will embark on a world tour to perform the new material live. Scheduled to kick off on October 3 in Iowa City, the tour will bring him across the United States and Canada this fall before crossing the ocean for a lengthy European run. Come December, Banhart will conclude the trek with a West Coast leg that finishes in Vancouver, British Columbia. Find the complete itinerary below.

Devendra Banhart Unveils New Album “Flying Wig,” Announces Headlining Tour Dates

Banhart will be heading out on a world tour in support of the record with a stop at The Belasco in Los Angeles.

Devendra Banhart envelops himself in a search for emotional refuge on his new album Flying Wig . The Venezuelan-American artist will also be heading out on a global tour which will include a night at The Belasco in Los Angeles on December 7th . Produced with the help of fellow musician and producer Cate Le Bon the record immerses you into a sonic landscape replete with ethereal synths and blue-hued textures.

Banhart’s eleventh studio album arrives as an odyssey of the self — an inward journey that reconciles the paradoxical dualities of identity and emotion. One he fittingly recorded wearing the now iconic dress that graces the album’s cover (which Le Bon gifted him), as well as pearls that once belonged to his grandmother, in order to orient and access his more feminine side.

The result is a record of swelling introspection and engrossing soundscapes. The grandiosity of both is conveyed in the album’s opening song “Feeling,” a resounding and spacious soundscape in which Banhart searches hauntingly for some solace. “I’m looking for a feeling / Hard to explain,” he murmurs dulcetly. “I’m looking for a feeling / Might not come again.”

Sodden with such poignant melancholy, “Fireflies” offers a glimpse of ebullience in the glowing warble of strings and synths that radiate alongside Banhart’s forlorn words of regret. On the heavily shuddering “Sight Seer” he dives headfirst into tangles of paradox and revaluations of his art: “I’m singing no longer for fun / But as a form of protection.” Floating amongst the ebbing tides of dreamily wrought tones and colors that flow from “Sirens” he reckons again with the limitations of music — “It’s getting harder to sing / Impossible things” — even as he does just that.

On the album’s illustrious title track “Flying Wig ” he embraces the vulnerability that comes with holding on tightly to one’s devotion to love, his strident vocals pressing themselves closely to warming riffs. While the decidedly funky “Twin” saunters forth via shimmering and sizzling guitars as Banhart’s deeply melodious voice rumbles alongside.

By the time you’re swept toward the album’s closing track, you find yourself buoyed by the oceanic feeling and careful tightrope that’s been walked between such potent feelings of hope and despair, love and emptiness. “The Party” dissipates all those feelings into its lilting and vaporous melody, as Banhart reconciles heartbreak as just another side of love.

Folk favorite Devendra Banhart has announced a huge world tour later in 2023 behind his next album 'Flying Wig' . The North American portion of the tour takes place in October/December visiting major U.S. markets like Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle. Canadian shows are planned for Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. Also during the year, the tour heads over to Europe for additional performances.

UPDATE: Coming up in 2024, Banhart's Still Flying Tour will be making additional stops in Pioneertown, Tucson, Austin, Houston, Dallas, Denver, Salt Lake City and Grass Valley.

Banhart will be releasing his 11th studio album 'Flying Wig' on September 22nd, 2023 via Mexican Summer. The new album follows up 2019's 'Ma' and 2016's 'Ape in Pink Marble' which reached #18 on Billboard's Heatseekers. Also in 2019, the singer-songwriter toured extensively across North America with support from Black Belt Eagle Scout . Since beginning his career in 2002, Banhart has collaborated with numerous artists including Antony and the Johnsons , Marisa Monte , Rodrigo Amarante and Natalia Lafourcade .
