25 Best Weekend Getaways in Texas

There is nowhere quite like the great–and gigantic–state of Texas, so it’s no surprise that there is an enormous number of fantastic weekend getaways in Texas to choose from!

Texas is (one of) our home state(s), and it is endlessly diverse, packing everything from deserts to cities to canyons to wine country into one incredibly epic state.

Texas is arguably the US state that we know best. We were both born there, I lived in Austin for a few years as a child, we’ve lived in both San Antonio and Austin together as adults, and having deep family roots in Austin means that even when we don’t call Texas home, we continually return to visit.

We compiled this list of the best Texas weekend trips based on our years of exploring the state, and quite honestly, writing this has made me deeply homesick for the Lone Star state!

If you’re looking to spend a few days exploring a new corner of the state, here are the best weekend getaways in Texas!

Note : After writing this post, we moved back to Austin for a year and launched Lone Star Travel Guide , our travel site dedicated entirely to Texas. If you’re looking for more Texas travel inspiration, we’d love to have you join us there!

Have a city break on your mind?

Texas’ major cities each have a flavor all their own–but any one of these cities would make for a perfect Texas weekend getaway!

Probably the best-known of all these weekend getaways in Texas on the overall domestic and international tourism scene, Austin is known for its live music, incredible festivals (most notably the famous SXSW), and excellent food.

Be sure to stroll through Zilker Park or head out onto Lady Bird Lake, hit up the boutiques and street art around South Congress , check out the State Capitol, visit Mount Bonnell, and sample a bit of Austin’s famous nightlife during your weekend in Austin .

San Antonio

Home to Texas’ most famous building (the Alamo), our former home city of San Antonio is easily one of the best cities for weekend trips in Texas.

Yes, check out the Alamo, but get beyond it too: San Antonio is home to Texas’ only UNESCO World Heritage Site, the 18th-century San Antonio Missions, and the Alamo is one of only several properties to be included–and it’s arguably the least interesting of them all (personally, my favorites are Mission San Jose and Mission Espada).

While spending a weekend in San Antonio , you’ll no doubt want to hit the famous Riverwalk once or twice, but consider also visiting the Japanese Tea Garden, the incredible Witte Museum, and the Majestic Theater.

San Jose Mission in San Antonio Texas as seen through a stone window. San Antonio is one of the best places to visit in Texas.

If everything is bigger in Texas, it might just be biggest in Dallas: known for big hair, big (oil) money, and big buildings, Dallas is a quintessentially Texan city–and also one of the fastest-growing cities in the USA, with an excellent food scene and plethora of things to do.

Of course, no weekend trip to Dallas would be complete without a somber exploration of the assassination of President Kennedy, whose murder in Dallas in 1963 is one of the most haunting in the USA’s collective memory.

On a lighter note, though, Dallas offers far more than morbid history: with phenomenal shopping (not even kidding, people from surrounding states flock to Dallas on the weekends for its shopping), excellent skyline views at Reunion Tower, and great gardens and museums (the Dallas Arboretum is stunning), you’ll find plenty of fun things to do during a weekend in Dallas .

You can even add on mini day trips to other places in the metro area, like Grapevine and Frisco, Texas !

Though it’s easy to lump Fort Worth in with its more famous next-door neighbor of Dallas, the city is absolutely distinct and has a vibe all its own.

The Fort Worth Stockyards was the go-to spot for cowboys and livestock as they moved west during parts of the 19th century, but today, they are part of Ft. Worth’s popular historic district, where restaurants, bars, and honky-tonks at what was once the “Cowtown” where ranchers would stop with their livestock.

Be sure to also check out Fort Worth’s growing craft beer scene if you decide to check out this Texas weekend getaway, and of course, don’t forget to stop by Sundance Square!

longhorns at the fort worth stockyards in texas

Houston is a bit of an enigma when it comes to these weekend getaways in Texas: it doesn’t get a fraction of the attention on the tourist circuit that Austin or even San Antonio does, and yet, Houston is one of the most diverse cities in the country and is home to one of the most interesting attractions in all of Texas: The Johnson Space Center.

Visiting one of the best space museums in the country isn’t the only reason to visit Houston, though: as the 4th largest city in the USA, Houston’s art and food scenes are not to be underestimated!

From Houston, you can also put together a fun day trip to Brenham , Galveston, or any number of East Texas destinations.

Texas’ enormous size translates to a wide variety of choices for the best nature-filled weekend getaways in Texas.

With two national parks and more than 80 state parks, not to mention plenty of campsites and Texas cabins to choose from, you may have a hard time narrowing it down–here are some of the best places to spend time outdoors during a weekend in Texas.

Big Bend National Park

With sweeping beauty that encompasses desert, mountain, and canyon landscapes in one park, Big Bend National Park in southwest Texas is easily one of the best places for weekend trips in Texas.

In addition to hiking and beautiful nature, the park is also well-known for its dark skies, and as a result, is internationally recognized as a phenomenal place for stargazing.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park

Known as the “Grand Canyon of Texas”, Palo Duro Canyon is the second-largest canyon in the USA and is home to truly unforgettable views.

Plan a weekend away to hike to the iconic Lighthouse, soak in the beauty of the canyon and the desert, and maybe try out some horseback riding or zip-lining while you’re there!

As Palo Duro Canyon is located less than an hour away from Amarillo and Texas’ portion of Route 66 , consider also adding stops at Amarillo’s Route 66 Historic District and the iconic Route 66 roadside attraction of Cadillac Ranch.

Float the River

If there’s one thing that Texans can agree on, it’s that grabbing an intertube, along with some snacks and drinks, and floating down a river with them is an excellent way to spend the summer.

The Frio River in Garner State Park and the Guadalupe River near New Braunfels are both incredibly popular places for this.

If you’re looking for one of the most local weekend getaways in Texas, you can’t go wrong with floating the river (and it’s safe to say that there are plenty of rivers to choose from ).

Drone photo from above of a Texas river with people floating in intertubes down it

Guadalupe Mountains National Park

Located east of El Paso, the stunning Guadalupe Mountains National Park is home to the four highest peaks in Texas, located in the incredibly vast Chihuahuan Desert, and is also known for its incredible fall foliage.

With a surprisingly mild climate for much of the year, Guadalupe Mountains National Park makes for a fantastic Texas getaway destination.

Be sure to make time to hop across the New Mexico state line and visit Carlsbad Caverns National Park, too–it’s practically next door and is one of the coolest weekend trips near Texas.

Dinosaur Valley State Park

The most notable feature of Dinosaur Valley State Park can be easily guessed from its name: if you head down to the river, you’ll be able to spot actual dinosaur footsteps, fossilized and frozen in time, in the riverbed.

With 20 miles of trails and a river to enjoy, it’s safe to say that the fossils aren’t the only draw, either.

If you do head out to Dinosaur Valley State Park, be sure to spend some time in the charming town of Glen Rose, as well!

Pedernales Falls State Park (+ Johnson City)

Packed with both hiking trails and swimming holes (aka pools formed in between each of the small waterfalls in the river), Pedernales Falls State Park makes for an incredibly fun Texas weekend getaway, and one of my personal favorites dating back to childhood!

In addition to the park itself, it’s worth mentioning that Pedernales Falls is located practically next door to Johnson City , the former home of President Johnson (though, fun fact, the town is not named after the president or his family) and close to the current home of the LBJ Ranch, which is now a National Historic Site.

The Lone Star State’s small towns are among my absolute favorite places to visit in Texas: not only is the state littered with adorable, well-preserved 18th and 19th-century downtowns, you’ll also find a lot of lesser-known culture in them!

For example, while it’s well-known that Texan and Mexican cultures have close ties, how many non-Texans know that there are strong veins of German, Czech, and even Alsatian heritage still running through some of the best small towns in Texas ?

Here are some of the best small-town weekend getaways in Texas!

Fredericksburg

Known for its prevalent German heritage and many, many wineries, Fredericksburg is the perfect Texas getaway for wine lovers!

With plenty of vineyards to choose from, not to mention a plethora of great restaurants and shops in town, Fredericksburg is easily among the top weekend getaways in Texas.

Some of the best things to do in Fredericksburg (beyond the wineries, that is), include shopping the boutiques on Main Street, visiting the National Museum of the Pacific War, day-tripping to the tiny town of Luckenbach, watching the bats at Old Tunnel State Park, and enjoying a hearty German meal or two.

Want to hike off all that good food?

Consider climbing nearby Enchanted Rock during your stay!

New Braunfels

Located between Austin and San Antonio, the originally German town of New Braunfels is one of the best-known weekend getaways in Texas for those who live in either Austin or San Antonio, partially because of access and partially because of how many classic Texas pastimes you can find there.

Whether you want to float the Guadalupe River, go dancing in the classic Gruene Hall, check out the original Schlitterbahn, or visit the incredible Natural Bridge Caverns, New Braunfels has you covered.

There are plenty of reasons that Ennis could qualify as one of the best small town weekend getaways in Texas–its cute historic district, great Czech food, and annual Polka festival among them–but the absolute best reason to spend a weekend in Ennis comes around in April: bluebonnet season.

Home to 40 miles of what is called the Official Bluebonnet Trail of Texas, there is no better place to admire Texas’ iconic–and absolutely stunning–wildflowers each spring.

Once known primarily as the home of Baylor University, Waco is now even more widely known for something entirely different: home improvement, or more specifically, Chip and Joanna Gaines.

The Gaines, who are Waco locals, gained immense popularity with their HGTV show Fixer Upper and brought some of that fame home to Waco by opening up the Magnolia Market at the Silos in 2015.

Part store, part bakery, and part event space, the Silos (as they’re known around town) have propelled Waco onto the tourism map, drawing visitors from across the country to the small town of Waco.

The city has seen a predictable explosion of excellent restaurants and things to do in Waco thanks to the popularity of the Silos.

Home to just 13 official residents, the positively minuscule town of Luckenbach is well-known as a country music hotspot, with a popular dance hall and far more live shows than one would expect from a town of merely 13 people!

While it would take a serious amount of dedication to turn Luckenbach into a standalone Texas weekend destination, nearby attractions like Fredericksburg, Old Tunnel State Park, and Enchanted Rock State Natural Area can be combined with Luckenbach to form a fantastic getaway!

kate storm in a blue dress in front of the luckenbach post office

Known for its quirky art installations (complete with works by Andy Warhol in its small museum), the small town of Marfa, Texas is perhaps most famous for how utterly unexpected it is.

Featuring excellent food, a location near-ish to Big Bend National Park (hint: don’t try to day trip between the two), and the otherworldly Marfa Lights, Marfa is a captivating town that is all the more enchanting for the fact that it is located in the middle of nowhere.

Located deep in the desert of West Texas, Marfa is often said to be home to the smallest Prada store in the world–though it is never open.

The store (technically an art display) is actually located in nearby Valentine–but it’s a credit to the whimsy of Marfa that the installation is so strongly associated with the town despite having a (slightly) different address.

Set less than an hour from the state capital of Austin, the  delightful town of Wimberley, Texas  is well-known in the Texas Hill Country for its artistic vibe, many whimsical touches (including 30 uniquely painted boot statues spread around town), its famous natural swimming holes, and its proximity to many vineyards and distilleries.

It also happens to be one of our personal favorite Hill Country towns!

The best things to do in Wimberley include going for a swim in the infamous  Jacob’s Well  or Blue Hole during the summer (both of which you’ll need to snag advance reservations for), browsing art and antiques, doing a wine tasting (or several), and climbing Mount Baldy for excellent views of the Texas Hill Country.

Wimberley can be easily combined with a trip to Austin or even San Antonio and is within close proximity of other central Texas highlights like Fredericksburg, Johnson City, and Canyon Lake .

… But that being said, it also makes a fantastic standalone destination, and once you arrive, you may find it difficult to leave!

Dripping Springs

Located just outside of Austin and nestled in the Texas Hill Country, the small town of Dripping Springs is primarily known for two things: weddings and Hamilton Pool Preserve, which has become one of the most recognizable Texas landmarks over the last decade or so.

The many wineries surrounding Dripping Springs make it a prime wedding venue in Texas, though of course its vineyards, distilleries, and even olive farm all make the town worth visiting even without a wedding.

Then, of course, there’s Instagram-famous Hamilton Pool, the natural pool that was carved out of limestone when a river caved in thousands of years ago, leaving a refreshing hangout (complete with a 50-foot waterfall!) behind for generations of Texans to enjoy.

Beach Getaways in Texas

I’ll be perfectly honest: as both a lover of Texas and a lover of beaches, you’ll never catch me saying that Texas’ beaches are among the best in the country… but if you’re looking to soak up some saltwater and enjoy a laid-back beach town or two, you definitely have some solid weekend trips in Texas to choose from!

South Padre Island

Located on a barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico, South Padre Island is among the most popular weekend getaways in Texas for people hoping to hit the beach, from laid-back retirees to young families–but during Spring Break, it becomes the most popular party destination in Texas.

With long stretches of beach, a turtle sanctuary, and plenty of classic beach town activities, South Padre is arguably the most beloved beach getaway in Texas (though admittedly, if you grew up in Texas, that probably depends on where your family headed).

On a personal note, the island will always hold a special place in our hearts for the fact that we spent our first wedding anniversary there!

Port Aransas

Located on Mustang Island, charming Port Aransas is certainly one of Texas’ best beach getaways but is perhaps even better known for its many fishing opportunities and incredible dolphin sightings.

Be sure to head over to both Padre Island National Seashore and Mustang Island State Park to enjoy the many local beaches while there!

sand castle on the beach in port aransas texas

There’s a reason that Galveston is one of the best-known beach destinations in Texas!

Home to sandy beaches, plenty of fishing, the beautiful Strand Historic District, family-friendly amusement parks, and even stunning historical homes like Bishop’s Palace to tour, Galveston has something to offer all kinds of visitors–especially given its location, which makes it an incredibly convenient weekend getaway from Houston.

Beach in Texas with a flock of seagulls on it

Want to focus your Texas weekend trip on thrilling rides and escaping the real world entirely?

Consider heading off to one of Texas’ major theme parks!

Six Flags Fiesta Texas (San Antonio)

Located in San Antonio and nestled next to a former quarry, Six Flags Fiesta Texas (and its attached water park, White Water Bay) is home to some incredible roller coasters (Poltergeist, Superman, and Iron Rattler were endlessly exciting for me as a child, and held up well into adulthood), as well as plenty of family-friendly options.

Kate Storm and Jeremy Storm taking a selfie at Six Flags Fiesta Texas

Six Flags Over Texas (Arlington)

The original Six Flags park (though not the oldest counting properties that the brand acquired later), Six Flags Over Texas is packed with rides and shows, including some truly incredible roller coasters–the New Texas Giant is among the most popular.

Opening in 1961 as the first park belonging to the Six Flags brand, it’s at this park you can peak into a bit of Texas history that has now become a national brand: “Six Flags” is a reference to the six flags that have ruled over Texas since the 1500s (Spain, France, Mexico, the USA, the Confederacy, and briefly, Texas itself as an independent nation).

More than 50 years later, Six Flags Over Texas endures as a beloved Texas weekend destination!

red and yellow roller coaster upside down

Schlitterbahn (New Braunfels)

While the Schlitterbahn brand has several parks now, the original–and biggest–is located in New Braunfels and has been open seasonally since 1979.

Half of Schlitterbahn New Braunfels uses spring-fed river water from the Comal River to feed its rides, making it one of the more nature-friendly water parks around.

12 of the Best Small-Town Weekend Getaways in Texas

Whether you’re looking for sandy beaches, a romantic escape, or an outdoor adventure, texas has it all..

A weekend getaway is the perfect way to unwind and disconnect from your everyday responsibilities without the major commitments of planning a big vacation. Texas, thankfully, has no shortage of attractive destinations that are perfect for a little weekend jaunt.

The Lone Star State’s big, flashy metropolises ( Austin ! Houston ! San Antonio ! Dallas!) often steal the spotlight, but Texas is full of small towns (and cities) that deliver both country charm and natural beauty.

Since the state is so large—the biggest in the contiguous United States—different regions of Texas are famous for their own local cultures. East Texas is renowned for its Southern hospitality. Central Texas is packed full of river towns settled by German immigrants. West Texas is known for its quirky desert hamlets and big skies. North Texas is famed for its wide open prairie plains. South Texas is popular among hunters and other outdoorsy types. The coast is characterized by white, sandy beaches and cute beach towns. And there’s a chance you’ll find great barbecue no matter where you are.

Here are 12 ideas, from the coast to the desert, for your next weekend getaway in Texas.

Marfa's downtown strip featuring the Palace Theater.

Marfa, Texas was founded in the 1880s as railroad water stop.

  • Closest city: Two hours and 40 minutes from Odessa
  • Consider staying at: The Lincoln Marfa , starting at $200 per night
  • Best for: Adventurous art lovers

Marfa, Texas, feels a little unreal at times. Located squarely in the middle of nowhere deep in West Texas, this little town is obsessed with art. There are about 2,000 residents and 19 permanent galleries in town, not to mention the annual music and art festivals it hosts every year like Marfa Myths . Marfa got its start as a legendary art destination when minimalist artist Donald Judd moved there in the ’70s and bought 40,000 acres of land, 16 buildings, and a decommissioned army base to create an art haven for himself and his creative friends. Even before Judd, Marfa had been made famous in the iconic movie Giant (1956), starring James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor, and Rock Hudson, which was filmed in the area. When they weren’t on camera, the stars shacked up at the Hotel Paisano , which is still in operation today. Other notable Hollywood flicks lensed in the area include No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood .

Today, the Judd Foundation and the Chinati Foundation (also founded by Judd) are considered must-see attractions in town, and other museums, like the Inde/Jacobs Gallery and Rule Gallery , are also popular. Ironically, Marfa’s most famous art installation, Prada Marfa , is located about half an hour away in the even smaller municipality of Valentine. And though Marfa may be a small town, there is no shortage of great eats: For delectable wood-fired pizza, check out Para Llevar , and for creative cocktails and eclectic dishes, head over to the Water Stop , which has a rotisserie chicken dish on its menu that Bon Appétit called the “second best reason to go to Marfa .”

Its proximity to Big Bend National Park also makes the town attractive. (It’s about two hours away, but everything is far apart in this area.) In one of the country’s most isolated and bewitching national parks, covering more than 800,000 acres, you can kayak the Rio Grande or hike, bike, or camp in the Chisos Mountains, which tower nearly a mile above the Chihuahuan desert. The landscape is dotted with cactus, yucca, mesquite, Arizona cypress, maple, aspen, and Ponderosa pine, and if you’re lucky, you may spot an elusive bobcat or mountain lion. The 4.8-mile Lost Mine Trail offers sweeping views of Casa Grande and Juniper Canyon; the strenuous South Rim traverses nearly 14.5 miles with 2,000 feet gained in elevation.

The best place to spend the night is Chisos Basin , a 60-site campground with flush toilets, running water, grills, picnic tables, and majestic views of the surrounding peaks. Or book one of five cozy stone cottages at Chisos Mountains Lodge , the only accommodations within the sprawling park.

2. The less visited towns of the Hill Country

  • Closest city: San Antonio
  • Consider staying at: Treehouse Utopia , starting at $475 per night
  • Best for: Travelers seeking peace and quiet

Fredericksburg, Wimberley, and Dripping Springs receive a lot of weekenders from San Antonio. But a less explored corner of Hill Country is equally enchanting: Drive one or two hours west of San Antonio, and you’ll find off-the-beaten-track towns like Leakey, Castroville, and Bandera. These places are located deep in the heart of the Hill Country and pickings can be slim when it comes to hotels or places to eat. However, what this part of Texas lacks in tourist infrastructure, it makes up for in peaceful solitude, unparalleled vistas, and cool, clear rivers to swim in. Park yourself at Treehouse Utopia , a bed-and-breakfast in a town named Utopia (population: 211). The all–treehouse property, sited on the banks of the emerald Sabinal River, was founded by Texas-born chef Laurel Waters and Pete Nelson, star of Animal Planet’s Treehouse Masters .

It’s the perfect jumping-off point for stuffing your face with brisket quesadillas at Bear’s Den in Leakey, riding rescued horses on the trails at Elm Creek Stables in Concan, and floating the Rio Frio, a spring-fed river that doubles as a popular tubing destination on hot summer days. Concan-based outfitter Andy’s on River Road sets travelers up with rental tubes for themselves and their beer coolers.

  • Consider staying at: Cotton Court Hotel , starting at $150 per night
  • Best for: Wine enthusiasts

West Texas lays claim to the fifth largest viticultural area in the United States, with more than 9 million acres devoted to harvesting wine grapes. Lo and behold, nearly 90 percent of those grapes are grown in the small city of Lubbock. Although the South Plains town is home to some 250,000 residents, it’s one-third the size of El Paso, five and a half hours west. Vineyard-hopping is practically a sport here, and most tours start or end at the 20-year-old powerhouse McPherson Cellars , host of the annual Wines & Vines Festival founded in 2011. The Llano Estacado winery, vino-and-tapas restaurant La Diosa Cellars , and the Funky Door Bistro & Wine Room should also be pinned on your map. Leave time for a saunter through the Buddy Holly Center , dedicated to Lubbock’s most famous musical son, and don’t miss the 19-acre historical park, bronze sculpture garden, and 44,000-square-foot Western Americana museum at the National Ranching Heritage Center .

4. South Padre Island

  • Closest city: Three hours from Corpus Christi
  • Consider staying at: This Airbnb , starting at $150 per night
  • Best for: Nature-loving beach bums

South Padre Island admittedly has a bit of a Girls Gone Wild reputation because of its notorious spring break parties. But there’s more to this 34-mile barrier island than frat boys double-fisting Solo cups at poolside beer pong tables. About a three-hour drive from Corpus Christi, the skinny isle on the Gulf of Mexico promises beaches and boardwalks for miles. Our favorite: the horizon-spanning stretch of sand at Andy Bowie County Park , on the north end of South Padre Island.

Less than a quarter of a mile from the county park is the South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center & Alligator Sanctuary , where visitors can amble along 3,000 square feet of elevated boardwalk bridging 50 acres of wetlands. Climb the five-story watchtower for glimpses of black skimmers and scarlet tanagers . (Grounds admission is $5 to $8 and free for children under four.) And one minute away, you can observe a feeding while learning about rescued sea turtles at Sea Turtle Inc. , an operation focused on education, rehabilitation, and conservation. On the southern end of the island, check into one of South Padre Island’s gazillion Airbnbs—this superhost’s two-bedroom glass-front condo is two minutes from the waterfront and an easy walk to a feast of freshly marinated fish at Ceviche Ceviche .

5. Round Top

  • Closest city: 75 minutes from Austin
  • Consider staying at: Rancho Pillow , starting at $300 per night
  • Best for: Antique collectors

The world’s largest antique fair—the long-running Original Round Top Antiques Fair —takes place in a town of 90 residents, midway between Austin and Houston. Because the fair prohibits vendors from selling new items or reproductions, it attracts some of the country’s most serious antique and vintage collectors.

For year-round tchotchke hunting, browse treasures from more than 50 dealers at the 12,000-square-foot Round Top Vintage Market and stop by McLaren’s Antiques and Interiors for one-of-a-kind architectural salvage, D. Little Gallery for antique French pottery, Mallory et Cie for vintage indigo ponchos, and Abejas Boutique for Navajo and Zuni jewelry. Round Top Festival Institute , founded by concert pianist James Dick, is another community pillar—check the calendar for music and poetry events throughout the year.

For grub, look no further than the thin-crust pies and pitchers of sangria at the Stone Cellar , followed by a slice of Texas Trash pie (coconut, chocolate chips, graham crackers, pretzels, and caramel) at Royers Pie Haven . To stay, book a room at Rancho Pillow , a remote family compound turned quirky artists’ retreat about eight miles from downtown Round Top. If your timing is right, you can reserve the hand-painted tepee with air-conditioning.

6. Galveston

  • Closest city: One hour from Houston
  • Consider staying at: Carr Mansion , starting at $280 per night
  • Best for: Those looking for a quick coastal escape from Houston

The island port city of Galveston was so wealthy in the late 1800s that it was nicknamed the Wall Street of the South . Now, it’s a magnet for families seeking a beach holiday. Playing in the waves along the sandy shore is a must, but for an adrenaline rush, zoom down a 100-foot vertical drop at 52 miles per hour on the Iron Shark roller coaster at Galveston’s century-old Pleasure Pier ; for a collective family aww , marvel at the penguins in the 1.5-million-gallon aquarium housed within the glass pyramids at Moody Gardens . Galveston Island State Park , a 2,000-acre barrier island ecosystem with lagoons, salt marshes, and coastal prairie, offers a quiet escape ideal for swimming, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, and kayaking. The diversity of wildlife is its biggest draw—look for everything from armadillos to marsh rabbits. Or, take time to tour the 1892 Bishop’s Palace , aka Gresham House, considered one of the country’s finest examples of Victorian architecture.

  • Closest city: 40 minutes from Waco
  • Consider staying at: The Cell Block , starting at $225 per night
  • Best for: Car enthusiasts and stargazers

For a true Bonnie-and-Clyde-style escape, book one of two rooms in The Cell Block , a 1930s-era jailhouse turned boutique inn about two hours south of the twin cities metroplex. (Rooftop deck? Check. Natural gas firepit? Check. Vintage phonograph and the wax to go with it? Double check.) The Cell Block is situated in Clifton’s Art Alley, a historic stretch peppered with small galleries, shops, and restaurants. To stay entertained, browse yoke shirts and hand-tooled leather roach stompers at BJ’s Western Wear ; ogle Corvettes, Thunderbirds, and other vehicles from the 1940s through ’80s at the Clifton Classic Chassis Auto Museum ; or catch a concert, play, or art exhibition at the Tin Building Theatre and nonprofit Bosque Arts Center , housed in a landmarked former admin building of Clifton Lutheran College. When your stomach rumbles, fill it with fried catfish or a chicken-fried rib-eye steak from Horny Toad Bar and Grill , chased with a bottle of tempranillo or lenoir from the Clifton-based tasting room of sustainable winery Red Caboose . Come nightfall, check in with the Central Texas Astronomical Society to see if the Meyer Observatory at the Turner Research Station has any public stargazing events on its calendar—all the proof you need that the stars at night really are “big and bright, deep in the heart of Texas.”

Gruene Hall is the oldest continually running dance hall in Texas.

8. Gruene and New Braunfels

  • Closest city: 40 minutes from San Antonio
  • Consider staying at: The Gruene River Hotel & Retreat , starting at $270 per night
  • Best for: Tubers and country music lovers

Located less than an hour’s drive from San Antonio, Gruene and New Braunfels are well-known in their region for their small-town charm, German Texan heritage, and gorgeous rivers. Gruene was founded as a separate town in the 1800s, but it is now technically located within New Braunfels’ city limits (one of the fastest growing places in the United States).

Gruene is perhaps most famous for Gruene Hall, the state’s oldest continuously operating dance hall, which has seen the likes of Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, and George Strait on its stage. Sample local wines at Gruene Winery and be sure to nab a bite to eat at the Gristmill River Restaurant and Bar , which serves up Texas-style grub like quesadillas and stuffed jalapeño poppers—and boasts a fantastic view of the Guadalupe River. Feel free to take a dip or rent a tube to float downstream —a beloved Texan pastime .

A short drive away is New Braunfels, home to the Comal River and the popular Schlitterbahn Waterparks (don’t forget to stock up on brisket sandwiches and beaver nuggets from the nearby Buc-ee’s ). The Comal River is the shortest navigable river in Texas, making it a popular spot for tubers since they won’t have to commute far from where they began their river journey. Enjoy a brew at the bierhalle Krause’s Cafe , which has local beers on tap. For some ’cue, the ever-popular Black’s Barbecue has a location in town—don’t miss out on its beef ribs.

9. Fort Davis

  • Closest city: Two and a half hours from Odessa
  • Consider staying at: The Agave House , starting at $295 per night
  • Best for: Dark-sky chasers

As far as West Texas vacation destinations go, Marfa often hogs all the attention—and for good reason. But look to its neighbor to the north: This oft-overlooked West Texas town deserves some love as well. Fort Davis is actually the highest town in Texas with an elevation of 5,050 feet, and the mountain range it resides in, the Davis Mountains, is classified as a “ sky island ”—you’ll find flora and fauna here that you’ll see nowhere else in West Texas, including piñon pines and silver-haired bats.

Drive the Davis Mountain Scenic Loop , a 75-mile stretch of Texas State Highway 118 and Texas 166, where you’ll find green-sloped mountains, historic ranches, and high-desert scenery. Be sure to check out the University of Texas’s McDonald Observatory , which welcomes academics from all around the world seeking to study the stars in these famously dark skies. Try to snag a ticket to a Star Party , which allows visitors to view constellations through some of the observatory’s telescopes. Afterwards, fuel up in town at the Blue Mountain Bar and Grill , which serves brisket tacos and burgers using local ingredients.

10. Lockhart

  • Closest city: 40 minutes from Austin
  • Consider staying at: The Ellison House , starting at $695 per night
  • Best for: Die-hard barbecue fanatics

There’s perhaps no place in Texas that takes its smoked meats more seriously than Lockhart, which was dubbed the “ Barbecue Capital of Texas ” by the state legislature in 1999. This town of 15,000 people has five barbecue restaurants, with Kreuz Market , Black’s Barbecue , and Smitty’s Market as the big three names. But there’s more to Lockhart than just smoked meat. To cool off with a cocktail, head over to Old Pal Texas Tavern , which also serves crispy fried chicken, and for all your vinyl needs, check out Bluebonnet Records . Lockhart is also blessed with beautiful brick architecture—make sure to check out the Second Empire–style Caldwell County Courthouse and the equally ornate Caldwell County Historical Museum , which once served as the county jail. For a getaway splurge, book a few nights at the Ellison House (reservations include the entire home), built in the 1880s and located a few blocks from Lockhart’s downtown.

A sunset with ocotillo and white sage in Terlingua, Texas.

11. Terlingua

  • Closest city: Four hours and 45 minutes from El Paso
  • Consider staying at: The Buzzard’s Roost Nightly Rentals , starting at $120 per night
  • Best for: Getting away from it all

Every small town in far West Texas has its own personality, and one of the quirkiest in this part of the state is Terlingua. Terlingua is located just eight miles away from the western entrance of Big Bend National Park and is a former-cinnabar-mining-boomtown-turned-ghost-town . There’s admittedly not much to do in Terlingua—there’s a coffee shop (the reliable Espresso Y Poco Mas ), a homey Mexican restaurant ( Taqueria El Milagro ; don’t miss out on the quesadillas), and a spooky old graveyard—but that’s kind of the whole idea. Both visitors and those intending to stay longer come to Terlingua to get away from the pressures of civilization. The town’s proximity to Big Bend also makes it a great base from which to explore the park; consider staying at The Buzzard’s Roost Nightly Rentals, which touts a luxurious, upscale glamping experience that just barely straddles the line of roughing it. After a long day of hiking, head over to the Starlight Theater , a former movie theater converted into a bar and restaurant which regularly hosts musical acts—you’ll notice a healthy mix of both locals and visitors. The chicken-fried antelope is a must-order, while the prickly pear’ita offers a fun, desert-inspired spin on an old classic.

12. Port Aransas

  • Closest city: Three and a half hours from San Antonio
  • Consider staying at: The Tarpon Inn , starting at $150 per night
  • Best for: Beach bums seeking a relaxed coastal experience

Sure, Galveston is one of the state’s most visited beach towns and South Padre Island is a mainstay among spring breakers. But located a little under180 miles east of San Antonio is one of the Texas Coast’s best kept secrets: Port Aransas. Here, visitors will find 18 miles of white-sand beaches and a cornucopia of fresh Gulf Coast seafood: red snapper, blue crab, oysters, and pounds and pounds of shrimp. In the colder months, the last wild flock of endangered whooping cranes winters at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. And between April and August, baby sea turtles (including the endangered species, Kemp’s ridley) can be seen hatching and making their big journey to the ocean at Mustang Island State Park . And though small town-Texas might not be the first place one thinks of for great Italian food, the Venetian Hot Plate is a hidden neighborhood gem which offers toothsome seafood dishes (like the gamberetti al basilico, aka pan-seared shrimp served in a white wine basil sauce) inspired heavily by Italy. Make hotel reservations at The Tarpon Inn , which is a historic Texas landmark and was built in 1886 using surplus lumber from Civil War barracks. The fare at the onsite restaurant, Roosevelt’s , which offers classic American dishes like rib-eye sandwiches and burgers, is nothing to sniff at either.

11 Most Romantic Getaways in Texas, from Desert Casitas to Historic Mansions

By Tommie Ethington

Room open to the outdoors looking at dirt and mountains

Sometimes you’ve got to disconnect in order to reconnect. Luckily, in the Lone Star State there are plenty of picturesque spots and wide open spaces that make it easy to unplug and spend some quality time with the one you love. From the piney woods in the East to the starry skies over Marfa, these are some of the most romantic weekend getaways in Texas.

All listings featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. If you book something through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

wood room with bed next to large window looking out into the forest

Getaway Piney Woods, Larue

There are currently three Getaway locations across the state, but this one 90 minutes outside Dallas is the original. The minimalist, tiny cabins come equipped with a small kitchen, private fire pit, and queen-sized bed set against an oversized window so you can wake up among the trees. Several nearby hiking trails—we recommend the four-mile Wolfpen Loop—and a lockbox for cell phones create prime conditions for long walks and deep conversation.

house lit up at night in desert

Willow House, Terlingua Arrow

After a long day of hiking in Big Bend National Park or a float down the Rio Grande River, there’s no better place to hang your hat than one of Willow House’s concrete casitas . A true labor of love, the proprietor spent years sourcing building materials that complimented the desert terrain and added personal touches, like works of art by her grandfather and dishes by a local ceramicist. Listen to the coyotes howl as you enjoy a Ranch Water on your private patio or stake out a hanging bed for a front-row seat to the magic that is the Milky Way. If you don’t feel up to cooking, the nearby Starlight Theater Restaurant & Saloon has cozy booths and award-winning chili (which, if you know anything about Terlingua’s annual cook off, is saying something).

Hotel Drover, Fort Worth Arrow

Hotel Drover, Autograph Collection, located on the edge of the historic Fort Worth Stockyards, has the kind of creature comforts a cowboy could only dream about: cloud-like mattresses, plush robes, and an 18-ounce bone-in, dry-aged ribeye steak. Post up at a private cabana by the pool or master the perfect s’more at one of the outdoor fire pits. On-site boutiques boasting Lucchese boots and customizable Stetson hats make it easy to outfit yourself for a night of two stepping at Billy Bob’s Texas , the world’s largest honky tonk.

Airbnb 28254684

The Bloomhouse, Austin

It’s hard to describe this ’70s marvel built by two University of Texas architecture students. You could say it’s like falling asleep in a seashell or like something out of a Willy Wonka dream. And while there’s no shortage of great restaurants in the capital city , the Airbnb's fairytale-esque patio would make the perfect setting for a candle-lit dinner catered by a private chef ( Gather & Forge can work with you to create a custom menu). As the listing says: “Do it for the ’gram, but also for your soul.”

Stargazing at an Airbnb in Texas

The Juniper Moon House, Marfa

True to its name, this adorable adobe casita is surrounded by towering juniper trees, with a screened-in porch that makes stargazing (or moongazing) easy and comfortable. Savor slow mornings in bed with silky Parachute sheets, pour-over coffee, and vinyl spinning on the record player. Then, head up the road for a boozy brunch at The Water Stop. This is West Texas living at its finest.

Miraval Austin Resort & Spa, Austin Arrow

When you and your significant other arrive at this all-inclusive, device-free wellness resort, you’ll be given a so-called “sleeping bag” for your cell phone and an endless list of activities. Break out of a date-night rut with cardio drumming, beekeeping, or a wine tasting centered around your astrological sign. Spend the day at the infinity pool and spa, where you can pick from more than 60 treatment options including an energy realignment designed specifically for couples. Or, for something truly different, try TexZen yoga—think asanas set to the soothing sounds of Willie Nelson.

Image may contain Building Housing House Cabin and Outdoors

Peach Log Cabin, Fredericksburg

Spend any amount of time at this charming log cabin built in the 1800s and you’ll understand why German settlers first fell for Texas Hill Country. Rolling hills, wildflowers, wildlife (white tail deer often stop by to say hello) and some of the best sunsets in the state make for a memorable getaway. There’s also a private hot tub and several world-class wineries a 10-minute drive away. What’s not to love?

United States Texas Dallas Hotel Hotel Emma

Hotel Emma, San Antonio Arrow

Set inside the former Pearl Brewery along the less-touristy part of the River Walk, this Roman and Williams–designed hotel is all about the details. Look closely and you’ll see remnants of old machinery, repurposed as light fixtures and works of art. Macarons at turndown service and seersucker Dos Carolinas robes are a nice touch, too. At the on-site Sternewirth Bar, ask for the Three Emmas cocktail, along with the juicy backstory involving a lovers’ quarrel. When hunger strikes, some of the best restaurants in the city can be found just steps from the hotel’s front door, but for dinner and a show, make reservations in advance at Jazz, TX .

Airbnb 51966007

The Disco Dome, Fischer

This geodesic glamping dome in Texas's Hill Country books out months in advance but the panoramic views of the sunset (and the starry skies that follow) are worth the wait. Other amenities include a fireplace, outdoor shower, and soaking tub for two. But the coolest—and grooviest—feature is the giant disco ball above the king-size bed, activated with a flick of the “party switch.” Select one of the provided playlists—curated by Texas DJs—to dance the night away. In town during the warmer months? Make the 30-minute drive to Jacob’s Well, a local watering hole believed to be the longest underwater cave in Texas.

United States Texas Houston Hotel Hotel ZaZa Museum District

Hotel ZaZa Museum District, Houston Arrow

Fancy a weekend at a French chateau, but short on time? This hotel’s upscale “concept suites” make it easy to whisk your lover away for a fun themed weekend without ever leaving Houston. The property's “That’s Entertainment” suite has a private theater, and its “Houston We Have a Problem” suite is, you guessed it, space-themed. When you do want to venture out, several museums—including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston —and the picturesque Hermann Park are at your doorstep.

United States Texas Houston Activity Carr Mansion

Carr Mansion, Galveston Arrow

Take a step back in time at this 19th century Greek Revival mansion turned bed-and-breakfast. The eclectic, yet modern design (you won’t find any doilies here) combines clawfoot tubs and antique light fixtures with nautical elements, like a gallery wall of painted seascapes. The Newlyweds room or detached Carriage House offer the most privacy, but you’ll want to hang out in the communal spaces too; curl up with a book in the parlor or sip cocktails on the rocking chair–filled veranda. In the morning, fill up on made-to-order delicacies like truffle hashbrowns and pecan pancakes before borrowing bikes and heading to the beach or The Strand , a historic district with quaint shops and saltwater taffy.

Big Bend National Park features hundreds of miles of paved and dirt roads for scenic drives, as well as 150-plus miles of hiking trails. For a different kind of Texas vacation, skip the state's main cities and beach towns in favor of a visit to Fredericksburg. This Texas Hill Country locale is known for its superb shops, rich German roots and tasty wines. Historical relics like The Alamo are no doubt San Antonio's biggest draw. However, you don't need to be a history buff to enjoy all the city has to offer. The River Walk makes for a soothing stroll along the San Antonio River, while the expansive Brackenridge Park offers a variety of attractions and amenities. Active travelers can practice their swing at the park's golf course and ball fields, nature lovers can pass the time in its stunning Japanese Tea Garden and families can get an up-close look at the on-site San Antonio Zoo's animals. This small town on Mustang Island (about 40 miles northeast of Corpus Christi) provides ample opportunities for fun in the sun. Texas is home to some prime Gulf Coast shorelines , and South Padre Island is considered one of the best. South Padre offers 34 miles of relaxing beaches along the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. While the island has a reputation for being a prime party spot for spring breakers, the rest of the year it's favored by families thanks to its affordability and bevy of kid-friendly attractions. Head to Sea Turtle, Inc. to learn about local sea turtle rehabilitation efforts, or visit Beach Park Waterpark to cool off on a hot day.

The capital city's colorful character takes Texas to an entirely new level. Austin offers loads in the way of culture, cuisine and natural scenery. While here, enjoy unique outdoor areas like Zilker Metropolitan Park (where you'll find the natural Barton Springs Pool), various museums and plenty of delectable Tex-Mex joints. The best way to soak up Austin's contagious energy is to visit Sixth Street. Originally inhabited by wild horses, the aptly named Mustang Island is now known for its miles of beaches and outdoor activities. On this 18-mile-long barrier island, which sits about 30 miles southeast of Corpus Christi, visitors will find Mustang Island State Park, a popular place to go mountain biking, kayaking and swimming. The park is also home to endangered sea turtles and more than 400 bird species, making it an excellent destination to spot wildlife, and boasts 5 miles of beaches. Once a lesser-known, low-key getaway, this small town just north of Mexico now attracts space enthusiasts thanks to its SpaceX launch site. Beachgoers will still find plenty of allure with Boca Chica's 8-mile-long stretch of sand, but remember to bring your own equipment since water sports rentals like surfboards and kiteboards are not available on-site. You'll also want to plan ahead, as the beach is closed near rocket launch dates. While here, save time for wildlife watching, as the area is a haven for various bird and sea turtle species, particularly in spring and fall.

Renowned as one of America's top barbecue destinations, Houston offers travelers a finger-licking good time. But did you know Houston is also a culture hub? Many of the city's restaurants and shops are also covered in Instagram-worthy murals. Plus, with the world-class Houston Zoo , verdant Buffalo Bayou Park and a children's museum, Houston is an ideal (and affordable) vacation spot for families. Consider purchasing a CityPASS to save even more coin.

Located about 50 miles southeast of Houston, Galveston attracts Texans looking for a convenient place to spend some time at the beach. The island features family-friendly spots like Stewart Beach (with amenities like lifeguards, volleyball courts and a playground) and Pleasure Pier (which features an array of games and rides). Meanwhile, Schlitterbahn Waterpark offers yet another place to play. Away from the sand, visitors can explore the shop-, restaurant- and nightclub-filled Strand District, named a National Historic Landmark for its well-preserved Victorian architecture. Travelers will also want to check out other historical sights, such as Bishop's Palace and Moody Mansion.

Easy to reach by ferry from Port Aransas, this former ranch is now a prime beach destination. Because San José Island is privately owned, the island's only publicly accessible land is its 21-mile stretch of unspoiled sand situated below the vegetation line. But visitors will find plenty to do on the beach. The island's more than 600 kinds of fish and roughly 300 bird species make it a terrific place to go fishing and birding. Other popular pastimes here include shelling and surfing.

Vacationer’s Guide

Comparing destinations: which one is right for you.

Before deciding what to do in Texas, look at different options.

Think about what activities you like and pick the one that fits your interests and your children’s.

Remember to check each place’s good and bad points, including where it is, how much it costs, and what kind of experience it gives.

This way, you’ll make a smart choice and have a great time in Texas.

At the Rosewood Mansion On Creek, we enjoyed the good service and clean, fancy rooms that you would expect from a Rosewood hotel.

Plus, the food at the restaurant and bar was tasty.

But, there were a few issues–there wasn’t much storage space in the room to put on clothes and other things.

The bathroom was small, and it was hard to move around if the door was open.

On the other hand, The Post Oak Hotel had friendly, helpful, and kind workers.

The rooms and things inside were good, and the cleaning service did a great job.

But, this hotel seems more focused on being a place for business and meetings.

At Hotel Granduca, the place was spotless, and they had tasty, fresh food and drinks.

But, the furniture looked old and used, and we didn’t know when the pool closed because there were no times listed.

Compared to the others, the Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek takes the cake for its attention to safety, although the dining experience at The Post Oak Hotel is exceptional.

The Hotel Granduca’s Mediterranean ambiance makes it unique, yet the JW Marriott Houston Downtown strikes a balance between its convenience and comfort.

Parties can be more work than they’re worth, but birthday trips are always worth the time and energy. If you’re looking for the best places to go on your birthday, the South has plenty of great destinations where you can celebrate in style. Whether you want to splurge on a 21 st birthday getaway with your friends or are seeking a quiet couple’s weekend for your 50 th birthday, we’ve got ideas for travelers at every stage of their lives. For those with loved ones approaching milestone birthdays, forget the surprise party. Ditch the guest lists, streamers, and Publix grocery store cake , and give them a birthday experience they’ll remember forever. Here are the best birthday trip ideas for every age.

Nashville, Tennessee

Nashvegas may be known as bachelorette party central, but the city’s mix of Honky Tonks and swanky bars also makes it a great place to ring in a 21 st birthday. Treat yourself to a shopping day in the 12 South neighborhood, where you’ll find a healthy collection of boutiques like Reese Witherspoon’s Draper James alongside national retailers. Make dinner reservations at new East Nashville hotspot, Noko , or at Sean Brock’s acclaimed tasting menu-only restaurant June . Then, gear up for a big night out on Broadway. If you can snag a reservation to the Dolly Parton-inspired bar atop the Graduate Nashville hotel, there’s not a better, pinker, or more over-the-top spot to celebrate the occasion. A picture with the giant Dolly statue at White Limozeen is reason enough to go. The bar is 21+ after 7 p.m., so you’ll have a perfect opportunity to show off your newly legal license.

Austin, Texas

Gabrela Herman

There’s a palpable energy that runs through this college town that’s famous for keeping things weird. Cheers to turning 21 by sipping on a giant margarita on Joe T. Garcia’s colorful and often-crowded garden patio. If the weather is warm, spend the day swimming, lounging, and people watching on the grassy hills around Barton Springs, or rent a paddleboard and see the city from a different vantage point on Lady Bird Lake. Austin’s dining scene leaves nothing to be desired, whether you’re in the mood for authentic Tex-Mex, real-deal Texas barbecue, or want to sit down at a stylish restaurant for dinner. The city developed its reputation as a music town, so seeing a live show is a must. A visit to the Continental Club , often called the “granddaddy of live music venues” is a rite of passage befitting of your 21 st .

New Orleans, Louisiana

Nathan Steele / EyeEm / Getty Images

Every day is a celebration on Bourbon Street, so why not make the party that much better by bringing your big day to the Crescent City? The great thing about New Orleans is that it has range. From the grittiest of dive bars to the nicest white-tablecloth establishments, New Orleans is a city that does it all—and a place where you can experience it all. Simply strolling up and down Royal Street in the French Quarter, with its excess of shops, galleries, restaurants, and street performers, is an adventure. The birthday girl or boy can embark on tasting tour around town to sample some of the city’s many signature drinks. Frozen Irish Coffee at Erin Rose, a Hurricane at Pat O. Brien’s, and a Pimm’s Cup at Napoleon House are just a few to whet your whistle. And of course, it wouldn’t be a trip to New Orleans without eating your way through town . For a special night out, make reservations at a classic spot like Brennan’s or splashy newcomer like Lengua Madre . You can’t go wrong either way.

It’d be a missed opportunity to turn the big 3-0 and not celebrate at a place that literally has the number 30 in its name. Named for the Scenic Highway that runs for 24 miles along Florida’s Gulf Coast, this idyllic vacation destination is known for its unique beachside communities that each have a style of their own. From the stunning upscale architecture of Alys Beach to the charming Mayberry feel of the town square in Seaside, there’s a beach town to suit every personality. Of course, the gorgeous sugar-white sands and turquoise waters are the big draw here–and there’s plenty of room for you and your closest friends to park your chairs for a day of chatting and relaxing in the sun. When the sun starts to go down, all you’ll have to do is decide which of 30A’s excellent restaurants you want to dine at. You can’t beat the views from Bud & Alley’s first-come-first-serve upstairs deck, but on the other hand there’s no place livelier or more ready for a party than The Red Bar .

Miami, Florida

Miami's energy is electric, which makes it the ideal place to ring in a milestone birthday. We guarantee that not a single second of your birthday trip will be boring if you spend it in this colorful, multicultural city. Start your day by getting the perfect 30 th birthday Instagram picture in front of a bright and bold mural at Wynwood Walls , the city’s original outdoor street art museum. For lunch, sit down at trendy KoKo for authentic Mexican cuisine in a beautifully designed space, or spend time in the vintage dining room at Versailles Restaurant , known for its Cuba sandwiches. Feed off the city’s unmatched energy by spending the day at a beach club on South Beach, where you’ll feel like you’ve been whisked away to a tropical island in the Caribbean. Not in the mood for a crowd? Charter a private boat to take you and your pals for a cruise.

Texas Hill Country

Grape Creek Vineyards

A trip to Napa’s wine country is a classic birthday trip that’s especially popular for those in the 30s and 40s crowds. If flying across the country to California feels a bit out of reach (or maybe like a little too much), the high concentration of excellent wineries in the Texas Hill Country are a compelling alternative. Book a couple nights in one of the Hill Country’s many plush resorts ( Camp Lucy and Miraval Austin are both great options), then spend your days sipping wine in the company of some truly stunning scenery. Let Texas’s rolling hills, green countryside, and famous wildflowers create the perfect backdrop to an unforgettable birthday trip.

St. Augustine, Florida

SeanPavonePhoto / Getty Images

Compelling history meets unbeatable Florida sunshine in this small town that was voted as our readers’ favorite in 2023. There’s no better place to reflect on the passing of time, as one often does on landmark birthdays, than in one of the country’s oldest destinations. And St. Augustine proves that good things come with time. Take a tour of the sizable but entirely walkable downtown to see striking Spanish Renaissance architecture represented on Flagler College’s stunning campus and at the Lightner Museum. Stop to refuel at Boat Drinks , a colorful tiki-inspired bar and eatery centrally located on George Street. The great thing about St. Augustine is that is essentially two destinations in one. When your dogs are barking and you’re ready to trade city strolling for sun-kissed skin and an ocean breeze, head to Anastasia State Park , a 1,600-acre nature preserve with deserted beaches that’s less than 10 minutes from downtown.

Charleston, South Carolina

There’s no denying our love for this classic Southern destination. After all, our readers vote Charleston as their favorite city year after year. If you haven’t been yet, use your 40 th birthday as an excuse to check this bucket list destination of your list. And if you have had the pleasure of visiting before, a birthday is an equally good reason to plan a return trip. To do Charleston right for your 40 th , book a stay at a grand hotel like The Mills House or Hotel Bennett , both of which are located in walking distance of favorite attractions like King Street (for unbeatable shopping) and Rainbow Row. Then, plan a dream trip based on your interests. History buffs should check out the brand-new International African American History Museum. Art lovers will want to pop into local galleries and visit the Gibbes Museum of Art. And everyone will agree to dedicating several days to making a dent in the incredible dining scene

Highlands, North Carolina

The Old Edwards Inn and Spa in Highlands

If a quiet weekend away sounds like just the way to jumpstart a new decade of life, consider Highlands. The charming mountain town nestled within the Nantahala National Forest, which means gorgeous vistas and opportunities to explore and enjoy the great outdoors abound. However, that’s far from the only thing Highlands has going for it. Treat yourself to a stay at the Old Edwards Inn and Spa , a far cry from a rustic cabin in the woods. The luxury resort is the pinnacle of mountainside elegance. Find excellent farm-to-table cuisine at the resort’s many restaurants like Madison’s and Four65 Woodfire Bistro + Bar, and definitely book an appointment at the European-inspired spa. The last thing you should have on your birthday is a worry, and Old Edwards, it’s hardly possible.

Savannah, Georgia

Amy Luo/Moment/Getty Images

This beloved Southern city is as timeless as you, and that’s saying a lot. As the state of Georgia’s oldest city, Savannah has had a long and colorful history, but one thing that’s remained stayed consistent throughout the years is the city’s undeniable charm. Walk the cobblestoned River Street, where you can get great views of the Savannah River while popping into some the destination’s most iconic spots like River Street Sweets , which coincidentally celebrated its 50 th birthday in 2023, and Wet Willie’s , where frozen daiquiris await. If your sweetie (good bless ‘em) has suffered a fair share of missing the mark when it comes to picking out gifts, buy your own birthday gift at the 5,200-square-foot dream store known as The Paris Market and Brocante .

The Greenbrier

Located in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, The Greenbrier has more than earned its moniker as America’s Resort over the past 200 years. The National Historic Landmark, which encompasses 11,000 sprawling acres that contain not only the main resort, but also estate homes, cottages, four world-class golf courses, 19 dining options, and a shopping village where you can find everything from handmade jewelry to designer clothing. If you’re feeling lucky (and who wouldn’t be on their birthday), you can take a spin on the slots or sit down at a blackjack table in the Casino Club. If your birthday happens to fall around Christmas or Easter, you’re in for a real treat as the resort dresses up extra special for both occasions.

Marco Island, Florida

This laidback island on Florida’s Paradise Coast is so picturesque you might mistake your visit for a dream. Marco Island, along with its sister island Sanibel, is known for its unspoiled beaches, abundant wildlife, and a healthy collection of oceanfront resorts where you can set up home base for the weekend. Part of Florida’s Ten Thousand Islands, a string of isles that pops up at the meeting point of the Everglades and the Gulf of Mexico, there’s no better place to commemorate half a century of living. When you’re not searching for shells on favorite Tigertail Beach, head into the town’s historic district to explore shops, restaurants, and galleries housed in brightly colored coastal shanties. For an unforgettable birthday meal, snag a table on the patio at Snook Inn or at the beachfront Kane Tiki Bar & Grill .

Alexandria, Virginia

Grace Cary/Getty Images

Old-school charm is the name of the game at this waterfront town that’s known for its colonial era contributions. For a blast from the past, visit Gadsby’s Tavern , a fine dining restaurant that’s been open since 1770 and was a favorite spot for all five of the U.S.’s first presidents. Find modern-day stars up and down King Street, a mile-long thoroughfare that’s home to unique local boutiques, farm-to-table restaurants, cafes, and art galleries. Spend time soaking in sparkling Potomac riverfront and check into one of the city’s many charming boutique hotels. If you’re a spring baby, you may even be able to make your visit coincide with the area’s famously beautiful cherry blossom season.

Ocean Springs, Mississippi

The lovely thing about this coastal Mississippi town is its just quiet enough, without ever teetering toward boring. This means you can have a relaxing day on the beach without having to worry about staking out your sliver of sand, but when night falls, you won’t be stuck inside with nothing to do. The hotels and stays in Ocean Spring are decidedly stylish. Treat yourself to a floating cabin at The Beatnik , a posh room in downtown’s The Hemingway boutique hotel, or a spacious suite at longtime favorite inn The Roost . Artsy folk will love visiting the Walter Anderson Museum , the Mary C. O’Keefe Cultural Arts Center , and the many galleries and workshops of local artists that span downtown. The best place to have your birthday dinner is Vestige , owned by James Beard-nominated chef Alex Perry. There you’ll have the opportunity to savor a creative five-course tasting menu that you’re guaranteed to think about for many birthdays to come.

Blackberry Farm

A birthday as momentous as your 60 th calls for an equally significant celebration trip. And there’s no place that screams special occasion like Blackberry Farm. Located in Walland, Tennessee, Blackberry Farm is the gold standard when it comes to not only Southern resorts but luxury resorts everywhere. Its stunning 4,200 acres in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains offers a host of activities from fly fishing in nearby Hesse Creek to horseback riding to paddle sports to cycling. If you’re hoping for a more relaxing trip, the award-winning Wellhouse Spa is the place to be pampered. The farm is perhaps most well-known for its outstanding food and beverage program that brings together the immense talents of first-rate butchers, foragers, cheesemakers, chefs, master gardeners, bakers, and sommeliers. This is the kind of trip you plan for years, then relive in your head for years after you’ve returned home.

The city also has plenty of hotels, restaurants, and shopping to keep you busy when you want to leave the peace of the jungles and beaches behind.

2. New York, New York

Plus, the city that never sleeps is guaranteed to keep you young because there's always something new to see and do. No matter how you hope to celebrate, New York City has it — from live entertainment and gorgeous green spaces to Instagram-famous foodie finds. Every season has something different to offer, so the Big Apple makes for a festive birthday trip idea no matter your birthday month.

3. Laguna Beach, California

For a truly pampered birthday trip idea, head to Laguna Beach , where you'll find the ultimate Southern California escape, complete with sunshine, surf, shopping, and spa treatments. There's no better place to stay than the oceanfront Montage Laguna Beach , where your party can share a private villa or book spacious adjoining suites, enjoy views for miles from the stunning Mosaic Pool , take a scenic stroll along immaculately manicured paths, or hit one of the area's most beautiful stretches of white-sand beach. Enjoy luxurious treatments at Spa Montage , from massages using California wildflowers to romantic couples' experiences.

4. Maui, Hawaii

If Hawaii has long been on your "someday" list, let your birthday provide the excuse you've been waiting for to finally book that flight and just go for it. Regardless of your age, Hawaii has lots to do, great places to eat, and cultural experiences to enrich your global education, while the greens and blues of Maui's tropical landscape offer a feast for the eyes. Try something new on your visit, whether that's learning to surf or sampling a spoonful of purple poi. To really celebrate your birthday with a bang, make sure a traditional hula performance is on the itinerary.

5. Train Journey Through Italy

Michele Rossetti / Getty Images

If you know of a better way to celebrate a birthday than all the pizza, pasta, gelato, and wine your heart desires, then please alert the presses. Otherwise, head straight to Italy for a travel birthday bonanza — there are few better ways to explore the dreamscape that is Italia than to see as much of the boot as you can by train. Include highlights like Florence , the Cinque Terre , and Tuscany (Italy's heavenly wine region) for the kind of trip that might make you pick up scrapbooking again.

6. Charlotte, North Carolina

If melt-in-your-mouth BBQ and outdoor adventures are right up your alley, look no further than Charlotte for the ideal birthday trip destination. Home to the U.S. National Whitewater Center — where you can find whitewater rafting, biking, zip lines, live music, and craft brews all in one action-packed location — and the fragrant pits of drool-worthy Noble Smoke , Charlotte promises great eats and a great time.

7. Santa Fe, New Mexico

If all you want to do on your birthday is relax and unwind, plan an indulgent spa retreat to the American Southwest and put Santa Fe at the top of your list. At the Ojo Santa Fe Spa Resort , you'll find spring-fed waters and the opportunity to soak in blissful thermal pools following a top-notch spa treatment; healthy, nourishing farm-to-table meals are also included with your stay. It's the perfect getaway, especially for a solo birthday trip or a quiet retreat with a loved one.

8. Mykonos, Greece

If you really want to fete your birthday in style, there's no better place to do so than the party destination of Mykonos. Located in Greece's Cyclades islands, Mykonos captures the picturesque beaches and white churches most people associate with a Greek Island vacation . But, what makes this place most appealing for birthday trips, especially for groups of friends, is its famous beach parties and thriving nightlife scene, allowing travelers to celebrate from sun-up to sun-down. Check in to The Wild Hotel by Interni for exclusive private access to the beautiful Kalafatis Beach , located below the hotel's cliffs.

9. Vail, Colorado

If you enjoy being active, Vail should top your birthday trip ideas list. Book a birthday dinner in a woodsy lodge for the full experience.

10. Backpack Through Thailand

Fly the distance to Southeast Asia for an unforgettable adventure packed with amazing views, flavorful dishes, and a welcoming culture, both from local residents and the country's large community of international ex-pats. Thailand is a popular dream trip destination for many, so what better reason to plan a trip than for your birthday?

Whether you go solo, with a friend or partner, or with a group of friends, Thailand is sure to please — the reason for its popularity among travelers is immediately obvious upon touchdown. Plus, Americans can stretch their dollars further here than many other places in the world, making it a great place to splurge on an all-out birthday bash.

11. Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas is a classic destination for celebrations of every kind, and birthdays are no exception. Whether you're in it to win big at the casinos or splurge on world-class shows, birthdays present a much-needed excuse to run wild in Sin City. For a little balance, consider adding on a road trip through Nevada's deserts , stopping to check out roadside art and Gold Rush ghost towns along the way.

12. Chicago, Illinois

James Andrews / Getty Images

With lots to do, see, and eat in Chicago — and sprawling views from spots like Skydeck Chicago at Willis Tower — it's a great place to ring in another year. Get out on the water or spend your days exploring museums and galleries, depending on what suits your fancy. And no worries if your birthday's in the winter: after ice skating along the Maggie Daley Park Ice Skating Ribbon, you can warm up with a piping-hot deep-dish pizza, a Chicago classic.

Swissotel Chicago provides well-situated digs located within walking distance of many attractions, including the shops of Magnificent Mile. Book a corner room for views of the Chicago River, Navy Pier, and Lake Michigan.

13. Toronto, Canada

Kristjan Veski/Travel + Leisure

Those looking to skip the long flights often associated with international travel should consider our neighbor to the north for their next birthday destination. Toronto 's thriving music, food, and entertainment landscape means visitors never lack fun things to do in Canada's largest city. Explore the culture of the 6ix by taking a street art crawl or spending the day at one of the city's various museums and galleries. If you're a spring or summer baby, turn another year older at a Toronto music or film festival. And, of course, there's plenty of fall foliage and winter fun to enjoy in the colder months, when you can spend your birthday at the Toronto Light Festival or do a nearby winter getaway .

14. River Cruise Through Europe on U by Uniworld

London, Paris, Rome — sure, these are great places to turn another year older in Europe, but they've been done before. Instead, visit a lesser-known side of the continent by boarding a U by Uniworld cruise and rolling down the Rhine or floating down the Danube. Not your Grandma's stuffy river cruise, this line provides a fresh take on a method of traveling that's totally under-appreciated by everyone under 60 — built especially for the young and young-at-heart.

15. Savannah, Georgia

Ivey Redding/Travel + Leisure

No place does southern charm quite like Savannah . Stroll along the cobblestone streets, shaded by canopies of live oaks aged hundreds of years, and pop into the many award-winning eateries, like The Grey , housed in a former Greyhound Bus station. By night, book a ghost tour for some serious spooks (there are a ton of companies to choose from), after you've treated yourself to a generous scoop of Leopold's Ice Cream , of course. The Plant Riverside District is another main attraction, packed with shops, galleries, entertainment, restaurants and bars, nightlife, and a hotel, the JW Marriott Savannah — all housed within a repurposed power plant, now a one-stop-shop for merrymaking.

16. Napa Valley, California

(Almost) any age can appreciate a cultured jaunt through wine country, which explains why it's a long-popular birthday destination. 17. Machu Picchu, Peru

More adventurous travelers might consider spending a birthday visiting Machu Picchu . Hike, bike, raft, or zip line to the ancient Incan city on one of the various local tours that take thousands of people to Machu Picchu each year. If you're a more low-key traveler but still want the experience without doing the whole three-day Inca Trail hike, take a scenic train ride from Cusco instead. Once you're acclimated, see why the famous Incan citadel, high in the Andes Mountains, is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Breathtaking views and complex stone architecture make this ancient astronomical observatory a must-see.

Before and after traveling to Machu Picchu, you'll most likely stay in the nearby town of Aguas Calientes, which offers plenty of lodging, eateries, shopping, its namesake thermal springs (which feel especially good after a long hike), and the Mariposario de Machupicchu butterfly sanctuary. You can also check out Cusco (Cuzco), a charming city full of hotels, restaurants, and UNESCO World Heritage architecture.
