Erykah Badu 'Unfollow Me' tour

From singing Chaka Khan in the mirror as a child to resonating with generations on stage as a certified “Queenager,” Erykah Badu is duality personified. On stage , she’s eccentric, playful, nostalgic, and refreshingly original, all to the sounds of timeless records. This was made evident during the Los Angeles stop of her Unfollow Me Tour featuring yasiin bey .

While running through his effectual catalog, the triad of “Casa Bey,” “Hip-Hop,” and “Mathematics” found yasiin humbly basking in his own glory as he expressed, “Life is amazing and full of miracles.” Moments later, he surprised the audience with Black Star ’s other half, Talib Kweli , as they performed “Respiration” sans Common. Knowing that the crowd was fully enamored with him by that point, yasiin teased, “If we had more time, I swear to God, we would hold you hostage with this dopeness.”

Before bidding us adieu, the 49-year-old wrapped up his set with a power-packed finale featuring “Ms. Fat Booty,” “No Hay Nada Mas,” “UMI Says,” an unreleased record dedicated to his mother, a prayer, and a vibrant dance break.

Part of Badu’s ensemble glowed in the dark as the 52-year-old seemingly floated to the mic, kicking off her almost two-hour show with “20 Feet Tall.” Joy splattered across the faces of attendees who were witnessing Badu for the first time, though we were all collectively spellbound by her abstract visuals, tribal sounds, and witty zingers.

“LA, y’all don’t feel this s**t? All my people over there, throw ya hands in the air. All my people on the right, we can go all night. All my people up top, come on ya don’t stop. All my people in the middle, wiggle just a little. All my people in the back, f**k ya lookin’ at?,” she joked midway through “On & On” from her debut album, Baduizm .

Commenting on the LP, she confessed that she wrote it for the ‘90s babies. She was pregnant with her eldest child, Seven, at the time and penned it “as a means of communication.” However, the set didn’t solely include records from the Grammy-winning album. She performed newer offerings of “Me,” “Love Of My Life (An Ode To Hip Hop),” “Kiss Me On My Neck,” and “Didn’t Cha Know.”

Seated on a beanbag strumming her guitar to the sweet lullaby of “Orange Moon,” Badu embodied her sentiment that performing is therapy. “I show up cause y’all show up. We become one living, breathing organism. It’s like I have 10,000 shrinks in the audience I feel safe with,” she explained.

Badu concluded the evening with an affirming finale, urging fans to “believe in yourself right from the start. Believe in the magic that’s inside your heart. Believe all these things not ‘cause I told you to, but just believe in yourself as I believe in you.” This glimpse into her musical circuit may have only been a few hours long, but the whimsical, cosmic journey’s impact will last into the next lifetime.

Erykah Badu preaches ‘believe in yourself’ and ‘mind your business’ at New York stop on ‘Unfollow Me Tour’

Review: Erykah Badu performed at Madison Square Garden with special guests Yasiin Bey and Tobe Nwigwe.

Erykah Badu likes challenging social conventions. The most recent project from the self-proclaimed “Analog Girl in a Digital World” was her 2015 mixtape, “But You Caint Use My Phone,” loosely based on people’s addiction to mobile phones. She does the same thing with the title of her current tour, ‘Unfollow Me.’

On her July 11 stop at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Badu and her opening acts, Tobe Nwigwe and Yasiin Bey (f.k.a. Mos Def), all echoed to one degree or another the peculiarity of keeping tabs on people you dislike. The notion of watching all the social media posts of a person you don’t care for intrigued the artists, prompting them to each say how corny it is.

“We only have one rule at the ‘Unfollow Me Tour’,” Badu said early in her set. “And that rule is…mind your business.” This fight against online hate obsession was noticeable but not too heavy-handed to overshadow the fantastic performances by Badu and her guests.

Nwigwe, an unannounced opener, delighted the New York crowd with his raps and glorious background choir for 25 minutes, and included his beloved single, “Try Jesus.” Bey made thinly veiled remarks on the subject between songs as he treated fans with songs like “Quiet Dog,” “Close Edge” and “Mathematics.” While he ended his set with his classic “Umi Says,” Bey’s guest stars made his set memorable.

Roots frontman Black Thought joined Bey for their debut, “Double Trouble,” Queens MC Pharoahe Monch came on for their song “Oh no.” Lastly, Talib Kweli emerged for a Black Star reunion, bringing the crowd together.

After nearly two hours of eclectic hip-hop, the MSG stage became engulfed with mist and purple lights as a spirograph cymbal spun on the projection behind the stage. Badu’s eight-piece band played the opening chords and sang the opening chorus of “The Healer” before the Grammy winner materialized on stage, accompanied by lasers and projections of lightning.

The first thing out of Badu’s mouth was the song “20 Feet Tall.” She stood center stage for most of the night, dressed in her Afrofuturistic garb, with two drum machines on either side. Badu preceded nearly every one of her songs with improvised drum beats, bracing the audience for what was to come.

The attendees went into hysterics when Badu eased into “On & On,” one of her first hit singles from her debut album, “Baduizm.” Adding its sequel, “…& On” from “Mama’s Gun,” was a tight, nice touch. She upped the fusion ante when she played “Baduizm” deep cut, “No Love.” The song features an interpolation of Stevie Wonder’s “I Love You Too Much” from 1985s “In Square Circle” on its coda, and Badu ad-libbed the chorus of Wonder’s “Stranger on the Shore of Love,” taken from the same album, which was a soulful, welcome decision.

Like with “The Healer,” Badu acknowledged the 50th anniversary of hip-hop with quick takes on Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick’s “Ladidadi,” Whodini’s “Friends,” and Snoop Dogg’s “Ain’t No Fun” while kicking a freestyle or two herself. This happened all while animated projections of boomboxes emerged above her.

Badu’s voice was as powerful as ever. She showcased the biggest of her vocals on hits like “Otherside of the Game,” “Window Seat,” “Bag Lady” and “Next Lifetime,” while displaying a delicate ebb and flow on “Mama’s Gun” songs like “Orange Moon,” “Kiss Me On My Neck (Hesi)” and “AD 2000,” which featured her playing an acoustic guitar solo for the first passage.

The show ended on a high note as she launched into “Didn’t Cha Know,” causing the crowd to nearly drown out her voice with their singing. It’s now a tradition for Badu to end her shows singing a slow, emotional excerpt of “Believe in Yourself” from “The Wiz.” With all the facilities of her amazing voice, she brought tears to attendees’ eyes, singing words from Glinda the Good that truly brought home the real meaning behind “Unfollow Me.”

Erykah Badu basks in her new era of reinvention and expansion

“Believe in yourself right from the start, Believe in the magic right there in your heart, Believe all these things, and not because I told you to, Believe in yourself, Believe in yourself, Believe in yourself, As I believe in you.”

A perfect note of positivity and affirmation to end an amazing show by one of the most important artists of her generation.

Things to Do

Music and concerts, subscriber only, music and concerts | concert review: erykah badu focuses on grooves and vibes at xcel energy center, prince would have loved it.

Erykah Badu sings into the microphone in a large-brimmed hat against a dreamy orange background

Erykah Badu knows how to make an entrance.

Friday night at St. Paul’s Xcel Energy Center, the Queen of Neo Soul’s band and backup singers opened without her, playing “The Healer” followed by a good 15 minutes of stoned soul-style jamming. When Badu finally showed up, in an elaborate feathered jacket, she had the crowd cheering as she tore into “20 Feet Tall.”

Badu emerged in the late ’90s as a leading light of the neo soul movement, a group of musicians who mined classic soul, psychedelic pop, hip hop, trip hop, jazz and African music to create something new, laid back and funky.

While she has dismissed the term in the past, Badu’s show Friday very much fit into that anything-goes style, with a heavy emphasis on groove and vibes, slow jams, spoken-word meditations and strong vocals backed by a top-notch band. Prince would have not only approved, he would have invited her for a late-night follow-up at Paisley Park.

Badu hasn’t released a studio album since 2010’s “New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh),” but she’s remained at least semi-active on the road, playing a dozen or two (sometimes three) shows a year. In October 2021, she performed her first local headlining gig in 17 years and drew about 3,800 to the Armory in downtown Minneapolis, less the half the venue’s capacity.

So it was a surprise to see Badu book a much larger venue for her return trip to town. Friday’s crowd was roughly the same size as the Armory, with the club and 200 level completely dark, the floor nearly full and plenty of banks of empty seats around the bowl.

Regardless, Badu turned in a trippy and totally entertaining evening of music presented completely on her own terms.

She dropped two of her biggest hits — “On & On” and “Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip-Hop),” with the former’s sequel “& On” added to the mix — early in the set list, along with her excellent take on “To Each His Own,” a fairly obscure 1975 disco song from the group Faith Hope and Charity.

At one point, Badu surveyed the demographics of the crowd, asking them “Where my ’60 babies at? Where my ’70s babies at? Where my ’80s babies at? Where my ’90s babies at?” Each question earned louder cheers than the one it followed. She then launched into a fiery take on her autobiographical 2008 jam “Me,” updating the line “This year, I turned 36” to “This year, I turned 56.” (Worth noting that Badu is actually 52.)

Ascension Maintained: Erykah Badu & Yasiin Bey Slay The East Bay On ‘Unfollow Me’ Tour [Review/Videos]

Erykah Badu, Erykah Badu tour, Erykah Badu unfollow me, yasiin bey, Erykah Badu yasiin bey, Erykah Badu yasiin bey tour, mos def, Erykah Badu mos def, bag lady, Erykah Badu tyrone, ari lennox, Erykah Badu ari lennox

Erykah Badu is a cultural institution. Sound art, fashion/style, branding/commerce, intergenerational influence, her presence and contributions loom large in the zeitgeist. As an artist and entrepreneur, she remains as relevant as ever. A quarter-century into an illustrious career, for summer 2023 Erykah Badu leveled up yet again, embarking on a 25-date arena excursion dubbed the Unfollow Me tour  with Y asiin Bey (fka Mos Def of Black Star) providing support.

These days, several years removed from her last official music release, Erykah Badu is nothing if not a busy lady. Netflix recently confirmed Badu will appear in its film adaptation of August Wilson ’s The Piano Lesson . On International Women’s Day (March 8th), Erykah officially launched her cannabis line called That Badu, in collaboration with rapper Berner and his Cookies brand. The strain is a terpene-rich Lemoncello crossed with Jet Fuel Gelato. In addition to her canna-product line Apple Tree, Badu and Berner are also releasing a mushroom tea.

On the music tip, beloved L.A.-based producer Madlib recently teased a forthcoming collaborative project with Badu. Meantime, the singer and her phenomenal band are in the middle of a magnificent run of shows that find the vocalist reborn, reimagining her catalog with a newfound verve and purpose.

Among the first handful of dates, Unfollow Me descended on the East Bay for a June 21st soiree at the often-vacant Oakland Arena , a vestige of a lost era where the NBA ’s Golden State Warriors called home before they relocated over the Bay Bridge just a few years ago.

This concert would provide a veritable masterclass in hip-hop and neo-soul, getting off to an exceptional start with a short, potent set from Yasiin Bey. Just after 8 p.m., the 49-year-old Brooklyn-born emcee/vocalist unassumingly took the stage with a minimalist setup, performing in front of his DJ with a backdrop of only shadows. Bey delivered a strong 45-minute set, breaking into deep cuts songs like “Auditorium” and “Casa Bey” from The Ecstatic , Black on Both Sides banger “Mathematics”, and the holler-anthem “Ms. Fat Booty”. Toward the end of the set, Bey dropped into his most famous tune, “UMI Says”, detouring from the original’s soothing Gil Scott Heron vibes into a frenetic tech-house banger while still crooning the lyrics atop the buoyant bounce.

Erykah Badu has reigned supreme as the “First Lady of Neo-Soul”, anointed for her mystique, energy, personality, and peerless steez. Along with D’Angelo , Maxwell , and Lauryn Hill , Badu was one of the major R&B vocalists ushering in the neo-soul wave of the late ’90s and into the next century. In fact, the subgenre’s moniker was originally coined by then-manager Kedar Massenberg to market Erykah’s debut LP, 1997’s Baduizm .  She’s long delivered an organic amalgam of classic soul, intelligent hip-hop, and jazz chanteuse in her cauldron of ethereal original music, often oscillating between alter-egos like Badulla Oblongata, She Ill, Manuela Maria Mexico, Sarah Bellum, Analogue Girl in a Digital World, and LoDown Loretta Brown.

Badu’s vocal stylings have occasionally nodded toward Billie Holiday , but her attitude and energy lean into Black pride and power, plus psychedelic Afro-futurism of the P-Funk ’70s. The sum of these parts remains unlike anything we’d seen or experienced, however, the seeds of her sorcery have sprouted in the sounds and songs of SZA , Ari Lennox , and Janelle Monae . Over 25 years since Baduizm shook up the game, Erykah continues to be a major inspirational force of nature.

Sometimes between the unicorn fashion profile, successful entrepreneurship, select DJ gigs, random fits of rhyming, hosting concerts that feel like a shamanic seance, and delivering babies as a certified doula, her sensational singing prowess almost gets lost in translation. On this night in Oakland, however, her vibrant vocal chops were the main event and superstar of the show from beginning to end without question. No matter the song or the moment, when Erykah really reared back and let it fly, her siren stunned the room.

After her band kicked things off with a thunderous, Badu-less version of the throbbing “The Healer”, the woman whose name was on the marquee slowly yet demonstratively appeared. Freshly dripping in a series of exotic, hysterical, and stunning looks courtesy of 19-year-old Dallas-based stylist Myah Hasbany , Erykah took an unrelenting command of the stage—and the entire arena—for 100 exhilarating minutes. She began with a patient, brooding unveiling of “20 Feet Tall” that brought the audience to its feet with her positively royal entrance.

The evening exploded into one giant singalong with a high-spirited Badu leading her troupe like a church choir, using the “Top Billin’” drum break to drop into her classic “On & On”, which spiraled into the defiant “… & On”, and before long, all of Oakland Arena had blasted off into the night.

Badu’s live bands have always been solid, but the current contingent might be the best one yet. The Musical Director is longtime bassist and collaborator Braylon Lacy , whose leadership goes a long way with arrangements and execution. On drums, Frank Moka has leveled up the situation, and in Oakland he would really impress—in tandem with Lacy’s rock-solid anchor—to drive the songs with nuance and authority. Daniel Jones handled synths and keyboards, with Geno “June Bug” Young wowing with a choice Fender Rhodes. As far as samples, drum programming, and DJ duties, the legendary producer Rashad “Ringo” Smith and the always trusty DJ A-1 were surgically on point.

Erykah Badu – Oakland Arena – 6/21/23 – Highlights

Badu’s backing vocalists have forever been a focal point of her sound and her live show, and this concert really allowed the “Baduists” some room to soar and shine. Durand Bernar , Lala Johnson , and Teron Austin brought celestial tones, versatility, depth, and an undeniable emotional quotient to the proceedings, giving Badu’s sarcastic ad-libs and quirky antics a bit of balance with the raw harmonic beauty.

The Grammy-winning empress served a smattering of searing songs from her extremely deep catalog, including “Appletree”, “No Love”, “Me”, “Time’s a Wastin”, “Kiss Me on My Neck”, “A.D. 2000”, and “Window Seat”, among other bangers. Badu reached back for Faith, Hope, & Charity ‘s defiant “To Each His Own”, a song with a message in alignment with the ethos of the Unfollow Me tour.

Late in the set, Erykah acknowledged some classmates here in Oakland, friends from her time at Grambling State University , before taking a seat in a bean bag chair atop a drum riser. She grabbed an acoustic guitar to serenade the faithful with an absolutely stunning “Orange Moon”, then professed her adoration for Ari Lennox, borrowing a few stanzas from the singer’s hit “Whipped Cream”.

Erykah Badu – “Bag Lady”, “Tyrone” – 6/21/23

Show highlights for this writer include a short, thrilling romp through “Love Of My Life (Ode to Hip-Hop)”, a nostalgic shot of glory that featured some hot bars from Badubatron in the space where Common ’s rhymes fall. Maybe the concert’s apex, “Other Side of the Game” was stretched out into a magnum opus that had an entire basketball arena of Black women born in (at least) five different decades just sangin’ their hearts out, nothing short of a joy to behold. Badu continued the fantastic festivities with a treasured classic: another full-throated scream-along in “Bag Lady”, among the most revered cuts in her crucial catalog, where Erykah occasionally put the mic down and let the capacity crowd get their croon on without condition.

Erykah couldn’t resist pulling out Snoop Dogg ’s X-rated train song “Ain’t No Fun (If The Homies Can’t Have None)”, a hilarious riddle that Badu pulls on crowds time and time again, a raucous, raunchy track that had the entire place rappin’ along without nary a care in the world nor a f—k given. She acknowledged that she could not end her show that way, so Braylon Lacy, Frank Moka, the Baduists, and the rest of the crew dialed up a massive “Tyrone” to bring it on home, sending every last screaming soul fully satiated and sashaying into the night.

Tickets will officially go on sale this Thursday, April 20th at 2:22 p.m. local time via Ticketmaster, but fans can get exclusive access to pre-sale tickets by signing up for the AT&T Center’s All Access Newsletter.

Along with Badu and Bey, the tour announcement also promises “more extraordinary guests”

The “high priestess of neo-soul” has played a smattering of theater and festival dates in recent years but hasn’t launched a full fledge tour since 2018.

More recently, Badu reunited with The Roots on their new track “Misunderstood” featuring fellow Philadelphian Tierra Whack, and made a surprise appearance on BTS’ member RM’s song “Yun,” which opened his critically acclaimed solo effort Indigo .

And speaking of The Roots, former Black Star member Bey will appear on Black Thought’s forthcoming solo record, Streams of Thought Vol. 4 .

The MC shared that the track will “represent a seismic shift in the game,” and has apparently been sitting on the track for a few years.

I have always wanted to see this queen live

' src=

she is not the queen of neo soul. It’s Jill Scott

' src=

Whitney is the queen of crack.

Nah Badu is the queen

Whitney was not on crack she is still Queen obviously

Neo soul artists Jaguar wright, Jill Scott, Lauren Hill, Amel Larrieux, Angie Stone , floetry, solonge . India irie, Ericka badu not the queen of neo soul. Jill Scott made it popular and wrote for Erica .

' src=

How did Jill Scott make it popular when artists like Erykah, D’Angelo and Maxwell were outselling before she even stepped on the scene? Baduizm outsold everything Jill ever did. No shade to her. Who Is Jill Scott Vol 1 is a classic but she isn’t the queen of neo soul.

D’Angelo and Maxwell are male for queen Erica music is not fully neo soul

' src=

Too many artists going on tour at once

' src=

It does seem that many artists are going out “on top” of each other. Consumers pockets are only so big, but I wish Badu, NE, Beyonce, Jill, and Janet success…

' src=

Wow there’s demand for an Erykah Badu arena tour? The woman had two good eras… Baduizm and The Bag Lady era. I couldn’t tell you what music she’s released since then….and that was the early 2000’s….

' src=

You have no idea what you’re talking about

' src=

Technically her last hit was “Window Seat” in 2010. She hasn’t released much since then. Erykah is very revered as one of the originators of the neo-soul genre. She’s still very relevant. Don’t forget that part.

' src=

She ain’t gon sho up for at least an hour. Sing 2-3 songs and she bounced. RUDE and non caring for her fans. I’m done.

In other news, Badu’s song ‘Caint Use My Phone (Suite)’ was featured in episode five of Donald Glover’s horror thriller series  Swarm .

Last month, she also called out for those on the right-wing for racism in their criticism of the “woke” slogan .

When asked about the term being co-opted by the right wing, she responded: “I think they mean ‘Black.’ Yeah. That’s just another way to say ‘thug,’ or something else, right?”

The singer added: “It is what it is, it doesn’t belong to us anymore. And once something goes out into the world, it takes a life of its own. It has an energy of its own. I can tell you what ‘woke’ means. It means being aware, being in alignment with nature…”

The neo-soul singer’s most recent album was her 2015 mixtape ‘But You Caint Use My Phone’ .

Neo-soul singer/songwriter Erykah Badu (born February 26th, 1971) has become one of the most praised artists in R&B and soul, drawing comparisons with Billie Holiday with her vocal talents.

Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, US, Badu studied at a school of arts where she cultivated her musical abilities, growing up with a love for 70s soul and 80s hip hop. Her first break came whilst she was working as a teacher and part-time singer, when she opened for D'Angelo in 1994. Her performance caught the attention of D'Angelo's manager, Kedar Massenburg, who was so impressed that he signed her to his label, Kedar Entertainment, before then arranging for Badu to record a cover of Marvin Gaye and Tami Terrell's duet, "Precious Love."

Badu's debut album, "Baduizm," arrived in 1997, finding fans with her bass-heavy R&B and her emotive, delicate vocals. The album was produced by Massenburg and also featured members of the Roots on several tracks. Her first single, "On & On" topped the R&B charts, with the album also peaking at the top spot. The album also faired well in the mainstream pop charts, bolstered by high profile support slots with R&B stars as well as hip hop acts, including Wu Tang Clan.

She returned to the studio in 2000, recording her sophomore release, "Mama's Gun," which utilized the production talents of Badu herself, James Poyser, Bilal and Jay Dee, scoring a hit single with "Bag Lady." Badu followed "Mama's Gun" a year later with 2003's EP, "Worldwide Underground." Badu pushed her sound towards a heavier, more abstract neo-soul with 2008's "New Amerykah, Pt.!: 4th World War," which featured members of Sa-Ra and Georgia Anne Mulldrow. The album was a huge success, peaking at number two on the Billboard 200, with this stylistic move continuing with 2010's "New Amerykah, Pt. 2: Return of the Ankh," although being a more light-hearted affair. Following this release, Badu has featured on a number of recordings with various artists, including Bonobo, Tyler the Creator, and Flying Lotus.

Live reviews

On the last day of the year, I’ve generally stayed at home with candles lit and music on, while writing and reflecting on the upcoming year. My plans would have probably been the same for 2012, but one person changed all that. Erykah Badu. Upon discovering she was spending her New Year’s Eve in Oakland at the Fox Theatre, I did what any fanatic fan would do – I immediately sent word out that I was going and asked if anyone wanted to join. I feel as though she and I share a special bond. We do have a few things in common – we are both water signs (she’s a Pisces, I'm a Cancer); she also attended my alma mater, Grambling State University. I would love to say that I knew her while I was there. It would be nice if I had bumped into her a time or two on campus and knew she was going to be somebody (at Grambling, the motto is “The place where everybody is somebody,” so I guess all students are somebody). But, alas, we were not on campus together; I believe she left the year before I entered the University. But I do actually know someone who really knows her, so there’s something else we have in common. Enough of the digression. One thing I clearly remember from my Grambling days is listening to Baduizm for the first time in 1997. I was in my last semester, set to graduate and officially become a “grown” woman. Gone would be the safety net of college life; now I had student loans to repay, a car note to worry about, and a job to secure. So in my life walks this woman singing about her cipher moving like a rolling stone, picking her friends like she picks her fruit, and asking who gave anyone permission to rearrange her. And I recall thinking, she's absolutely right on point! Erykah’s lyrics and music were refreshingly different than most R&B of the 90s. While we had Mary J. Blige singing about Real Love over a hip-hop beat, Erykah sang about Next Lifetime and No Love. She was an inspirational change of pace, and I clung on to her every word. I am a lover of everything Badu. When Mama’s Gun was released in 2000, I just knew she wrote many of those songs about my life. From Didn’t Cha Know, to . . . & On to Kiss Me On My Neck, Erykah’s growth was apparent. So, back to her show on Dec. 31, 2012. It’s been 15 years since Baduzim’s debut and Erykah has subsequently released five more albums. Each has showcased an ever-changing Badu, but one thing has remained consistent – Erykah’s live performances. They are NEVER a disappointment. Strolling on stage while her band played a lazy and drawn out version of 20 Feet Tall (it came across as if they were still in sound check), she paused at the microphone, taking in all the audience love, before proclaiming, “My love, what did I do to make you fall so far from me?” At the end of the song (and come to think of it, she did this on every song), Erykah struck a warrior/goddess pose. The next three songs (The Healer/Hip Hop, Me and My People) are all from New Amerykah: Part One (4th World Order) – the one album whose meaning I’m still working on grasping. This provided me, however, the perfect opportunity to stop and do some video recording. Playing On & On and . . . & On back to back, Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip Hop) followed with a surprise appearance by Oakland’s own Raphael Saadiq who, according to Erykah, provided the base line for the song. (Side note, I normally am up dancing to this song, but I sacrificed this time so I could record this performance for my readers. I’m glad I did.) As the clock neared midnight, the band began the first notes of Danger. About half way through the song, a count-down appeared on the screen behind the stage and we all stopped, screamed happy New Year, and went back to partying. During Back in the Day (Puff), Erykah exclaimed, “Now is the opportunity for you to smoke,” as if that hadn’t been already occurring. At some point, she took her shoes off and ended the night with Didn’t Cha Know, the first verse from Out My Mind, Just in Time (the one song I just had to hear) and Bag Lady, which I think was an appropriate song to finish with because in the new year, I definitely will be working on letting the bags go!

Perhaps it was my fault for having high expectations... To kick off a month of festivities celebrating my wife's birth, I surprised her with tickets to Erykah Badu. She has seen her perform in the past in Memphis, but this was my first time and I had heard wonderful reviews... that she puts on an amazing show; commands the audience in a way only Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin did. Tonight was not the case. The opening act, Ro James, was meh. I congratulate him for pursuing his dream (if only everyone did that), but his show sucked for the most important reason. The sound was horrible. I have always feared this was the state of most hip hop concerts... That there is no way to get the live sound to imitate CD quality... Or the people working the sound are unknowledgeable, or the equipment is subpar... For whatever reason, the sound quality was horrible. On a positive note, he performed a song about asking consent when hooking up with a woman and I think that is a strong message that more men need to share with other men. So, overall, he gets a favorable review.

Erykah Badu was pretty amazing, but overall, the show was meh. I could have saved $165 (total cost for 2, $62 tickets and service fees). The Landers Center in Southaven, Mississippi is a horrible venue. The drink and food lines were incredibly long, as if they were understaffed, though the restrooms were clean and never crowded.

Erykah's voice was good and sounded like she is taking care of herself, but she did get tired. Did a few old songs as well as some new ones. She came on a little late, which allowed us to stand in the longer than usual line for snack... only to begin right when we were close to the front. Her back up band was really good. They played one set. She did not really engage with us, the audience. A few songs after mentioning that she was tired, she finished and left the state.

Oh yeah, and did I mention that she was performing in Mississippi, but kept calling it Memphis. While Southaven is in the Memphis metropolitan statistical area, it is still Mississippi and so not Memphis!

In conclusion, I am glad I saw her perform. I am happier that I was able to spend a wonderful evening with my wife. Will I pay to see her perform again? Most likely not, though I love her music.

So she pulled a Lauren Hill Last night at the Brooklyn Bowl. My Girlfriend was really looking forward to see he for Post valentines day. We paid 17 Dollars for parking $ 100 dollars for drinks ..we stood in a huge line to get in and get our tickets on the ticket the show time is 8PM .. ( Figured she would be a litle bit after that no big deal ) standing room only were are all packed in like sardines.. no opening band.. 1 hour goes by , no Erykah 2 hours go by no Erykah, 2 hours and 45 go by no Erykah ...3 hours no body even came out to greet all these people who have paid good money and have been standing waiting for over 3 HOURS past show time.there were drinks being poured down from the upper balcony and started getting really ghetto in there.. People started booing and a bunch of people left to get refunds.. Brookyln Bowl was very helpful with the refunds but someone there should have been wise enough to apologize for the delay..fter we left she finally took the stage after 11: 30 PM played for about an hour.. By far the worst concert experience ever.. I really hope Brooklyn Bowl holds her responsible and takes out the refunded ticket cost out of her pay..I will never buy another ticket to see Miss Ba.. I really was looking forward to going to the brooklyn bowl tainted my first experience but I will go back because they did offer a refund ..I feel very sorry for that poor lady who was refunding all those tickets.

One of the most acclaimed R & B singers Erykah Badu has been touring extensively since her beginnings in the mid-90's. Her soulful sound has captivated fans around the world and her shows are almost always guaranteed to sell out so the opportunity to see her perform live feels even more special.

Often criticised for arriving onstage late, Erykah walks on to the atmospheric setting and the audience fall deadly silent as herself and each of her band are illuminated by singular spotlights. Standing for a moment to indulge in the sight before her, Badu smiles broadly before taking to a synth pad and beginning the fragmented '20 Feet Tall'. Her biggest international hit 'On & On' is dropped midset and given a jazz style makeover which sounds great with the freestyle instrumentals.

Erykah uses her own voice as an instrument as she performs vocal acrobatics cheered on by the crowd. Her own backing band keep the rhythm and pace whilst Badu freestyles making every concert feel original. A tender rendition of 'Next Life' and the ever popular 'Bag Lady' leave the audience satisfied.

I absolutely LOVEEEEEE Erykah Badu, but her timing is awful, the show began at 8 and she showed up at about 10, maybe 10:30 because there was a performing act that came on before and I lost track of time but that's just not okay to paying people expecting a show to be at least two hours and only amounted up to about one. However, her energy and presence is awesome, once she showed up I couldn't even be mad anymore I was just so happy to be experiencing her live and in color, she has such a colorful personality and truly knows how to engage her audience and that's great. I do realize she was there to promote her mixtape but I also think it was a bit too premature since it dropped so recently and no one really knew all the material or could sing along which I felt she could sense and went back to her old hits and then the crowd was really into it, I just wish I could get more out of the concert. There were definitely a few more songs I would have LOVED to hear, other than that she's an awesome performer.

Erykah Badu is a high energy performer. Her band was truly talented and her background singers took this performance to the next level! They all rocked it! Only good things to say about this woman's showmanship and professionalism. Show started on time and the vibes were amazing. The only downside of this excursion was the venue. I flew 500 miles to see this show and because of the security at the venue we missed the first 3 songs in the set and had to stand in the pouring rain for 2 hours before we could get inside. The Observatory North Park really needs to rethink their security procedures. It's not a well planned system at all. I considered leaving and asked about a refund, but was told this wasn't possible. All in all I'm glad I stayed for the show because it really lifted my spirits after the security fiasco, but I'll never see another show at this venue. Not for all of the money in the world.

DISAPPOINTING!!!

I live in Austin, TX, I took the day off, drove up 35, checked into my hotel, had a SUPERB dinner at Fleming’s in Plano, TX, drove down to The Bomb Factory, paid $20 to park in a lot at Malcolm X & Taylor, walked to the venue, got through security, got my ticket scanned at 7:50 PM CST.

Festival seating, no seats!!

Act # 1 (Techno DJ), Act # 2 (DC drummer), Dead Prez (3 songs)

I purchased a $30 T-shirt for my daughter

We tried to hold up until Ms. Badu made her stage appearance.

We left the venue at 11:10 PM CST

I Love Ms. Badu, but last night was VERY UNPROFESSIONAL!!

Have always and will always love Erykah’s contribution to music BUT... she takes her fans in Dallas for granted. Tickets stated doors open at 7pm show starts at 8pm. Opening act didn’t start until 9. She came out during his set to say hello, so she clearly was at the venue but she made her fans wait until after 12am to hear her perform. I don’t know of anyone worth waiting that long. There were people who left without seeing her. Disappointed Ms. Badu You may be the envy of the women and rule the men but I’ll just listen to the music from the comfort of my home in the future.

This was one of the best experiences I've had in my entire life! It was amazing. I'm a huge fan and she DID NOT disappoint.. She covered various albums and even went as far to join other melodies from other songs into the hooks of her songs. Her voice was so off the charts that I had to hold my chest cause I didn't think my heart could stay intact during her high notes. Haha, I will DEFINITELY be going to her concerts whenever she comes back to the area. Thanks SongKick for making your platform available to me.

The show was just ok for me. I couldn't get over the fact that she did not come on until 9:30 when the show was supposed to start at 8. This was my first time and last time attending a concert of hers. My time is valuable just like the artist and if any artist cannot respect their fans I would suggest the fans stop supporting their artist. My fiancee seen get years ago at the beginning of her career and she was on time. Money can really change a person. Sad.

ERYKAH BADU' S PERFORMANCE WAS AMAZING

Erykah badu s lyrics is food for my soul . FatbellyBella is creative, talented and original . She was everything I expected her to be charismatic and funny. I love her even more now and look forward to her future works

LIKE A FINE WINE, SHE ONLY GETS BETTER

Erykah Badu is a poet of words and MUSIC! Ms Badu’s unique style is mesmerizing and transporting. Her words, spirit, talent and heart shine through in every aspect of her performance. That combined with her humor, Dallas Realness and Humble heart made for a phenomenal concert! Thank you for sharing yourself on your Birthday! More than a Fan, I am a lovin kindred spirit! peace

NAS AND BADU WERE GREAT

Nas snapped. Did all my cuts except for Ether but I understand why-can't trip. Badu is the bomb and the African dance she did was nice. Whoever didn't like it doesn't understand Badu's true essence. Next time you come to Chicago Ms. Badu, please do "Back in the Day" Please!!!! On second thought if you did perform it I would have snapped, might have caught a case. Great time though

A MATURE LEVEL OF SOPHISTICATION

Those who truly understand Badu and her music know that it was a blessing to be in her presence. Bamileke!

AMAZING PERFORMANCE

The concert was EVERYTHING!!! FROM Tobe to Mos to E...She is a great performer.

NOT FOR CHILDREN

I assumed the show was for all ages since there was no indicator on the ticket and Badu is a thought-provoking individual that I listen to in front of my child. However, there was an unnecessary amount of foul language, lewd remarks from the performers, particularly the Atlanta DJ and Goodie Mob, and copious amounts of marijuana. I did not know who Goodie Mob was until this concert. I assumed because they replaced Common, they'd be a close alternative. More so now I am beyond disappointed Common didn't perform. Why can't music just be what it is and not a reason to be inappropriate because you think it's funny? When Badu came on stage around 10:40 it was amazing. However, by that time, the smoke was thick and Atlanta had sang and inappropriately danced to every disgusting song it could from the 90's and 2000's thanks to the DJ and Goodie Mob, who kept having to stall time. So we left early. Talib Kweli was good also, but his performance was overshadowed by the other raunchiness.

ERYKAH BADDU LATE AS USUAL

I was disappointed in the time it took for her to come out. Almost 3 hours . Then she didn’t sing 2 of my fav songs … Tyrone and Bag Lady. I saw ppl leaving early while she was still performing that was rude but deserving. I didn’t bc my fiancé was loving the show

ERYKAH AT RAVINIA CHICAGO

Outside of being an hour late after opening act and the weather didn’t make it better. Erykah’s band came out first playing for 15 minutes REALLY! I was overall disappointed and will not pay to see her again. She finally comes and delivers a ok concert. What a waste not a fan anymore as far as paying to see. That will never happen again. Quite a large amount of guests left half way through her performance.

Based on what I’ve read on the reviews Atlanta got a good concert but almost an hour late to stage not good! That’s about four songs to me! She did sing a lot of the songs I love! so I’m happy about that! Could you please spend some money on monitors so we can see you up close! I think the fans deserve that to see Badu up close! Badu said she’s in charge of this so bring the monitors spend some money on your fans! I hope the tour improves! Well she is a senior citizen now so she is giving all she got! I’m stay a fan at the house not at the arena! Peace and Blessings! If you come to the ATL for a concert read the reviews first then decide!

SHE WAS OBVIOUSLY ON DRUGS

Nas opening was awesome! Badu was trash. I paid good money for her to start the show after an hour intermission from the opening act. Then she came out and sang a bunch of songs that nobody ever heard before. Then she stopped singing for a while and flopped around the stage. Many people started leaving early and the remaining ones were uninterested in her poor performance. Was very disappointed with this show.

STARTED LATE, NEVER SAW ERIKAH BADU!!!!

The show started late and we stood outside the coliseum from 6:30 until 7:30. Then they had technical sound issues throughout the show and Mystical Soulchild could not hear himself singing. After Jarule performed 10:30 pm, the audience waited for more than 30 minutes for Erikah to come to the stage while they worked on her sound. At 10:50 still no band. By this point there DJ had long stopped and playing music and everyone was getting restless!!! We had to leave because we have babysitting only until midnight and I was SURE the concert would be over by this point!!! What AN EXTREME DISAPPOINTMENT!!!! We had heard that Erikah puts on a great show. But this concert was an unorganized mess!!!! TRULY UNPROFESSIONAL!!! The artist that we did see tonight were great and thank you for your performance.

ERYKAH AT BKS PROSPECT PARK

One and hall hr late start . Spotty performance. Wont waste my money again

POOR PERFORMANCE

I attended Badu's concert at Ravinia this past weekend and she was a huge disappointment. At first, I thought it was only me but as I watched people gradually trickle out the door, I quickly realized others shared my sentiment. She was frequently offbeat and for some odd reason she chose not to spend time singing her hits. Instead, she wasted time singing unpopular songs. Because she started nearly 1 hour late, it really mattered that she wasted time with these unpopular selections. Overall, she did a lot of prancing around the stage but never seemed to get into her own show. It was a waste of time and money, and sad to watch.

1.0 star rating

2 HOURS LATE!?!?!?!

Erykah was two hours late?! My husband and I left because we were tired of waiting and standing around. This is unacceptable behavior towards the fans...There were no flight delays or traffic in San Francisco at the time.... No excuse!!! We all don't have time to waste. Very disappointed.

Sadly, no rating. We didn’t see Badu. We left after waiting for 4 hours. I’m sure she was awesome. Just thought it was rude. And a waste of a fans money.

WAITED FOREVER

Three hours and still no performers. I paid good money and never saw anything. I got sick in the heat and almost passed out. Very rude and disappointing

Madonna Surprises Crowd With Erykah Badu During Dallas Tour Stop

During the second night of Madonna’s Celebration tour in Dallas on Tuesday (Mar. 26), the singer surprised fans when she invited fellow superstar Erykah Badu onstage to judge the “ Vogue ” ballroom competition.

As dancers strutted across the makeshift runway , perfect scores were given across the board. Madonna’s daughter, Estere , remained a crowd favorite and closed out the segment.

“Madonna showed out !” wrote Badu following the show. “About Last Night .4 decades of CREATIVE EXPRESSION !!!! I was with the original OG LAST NIGHT !!!!!”

She considered Madonna to be a “symbol of freedom and inclusion.” Adding, “Always so deliberate with your art . I respect and appreciate our sisterhood THANKYOU Madonna and family for hosting my family on our mommy daughter date ! Me and Puma Curry and My lil sis [Koryan Nayrok Wright], her daughter Dime had a wonderful time.”

As the neo-soul pioneer captured footage from the audience, she wrote in a separate post, “@madonna said come . So we gone.”

According to the Dallas Observer , Badu and Madonna haven’t been seen together since a private party in 2022 that celebrated Burberry's Ricardo Tisci-designed "Lola" handbag.

Despite the festive occasion, fans were irate in Badu’s comments. She was recently c alled out by Beyoncé’s publicist over a seemingly shady reaction to Bey’s COWBOY CARTER promo. The Hive flooded her recent post from the Madonna show writing, “So you loving on Madonna but hating on Bey…make it make sense.”

Another user chimed in, “You out here acting like a opp against Beyonce… I really did love you but cmon now I feel like you being extra petty. Bey really respects and loves you.”

She indirectly responded to the backlash by posting a photo with the caption, “ What is swag ?” However, no further comment has been made.

Beyoncé Rep Appears to Defend Singer Against Erykah Badu Album Art Criticism: ‘She Slays. Now. Then. Always’

On Wednesday (March 20), Badu claimed that Bey's look on the "Act II: Cowboy Carter" art reminded her of her signature braids and beads.

Call it the “braids and beads beef.” A sartorial scuffle erupted on Wednesday (March 20) after it appeared that Erykah Badu called out Beyoncé for borrowing her signature look for the cover of the upcoming Act II: Cowboy Carter album.

“HMMM,” Badu commented on the image, according to Complex . Badu followed up on X with a tweet that read, “To Jay Z. Say something Jay. You gone let this woman and these bees do this to me?? [laughing face emoji].” At press time it did not appear that Beyoncé had responded to Badu’s post, but according to People Bey’s longtime spokesperson, Yvette Noel-Schure, appeared to comment in an Instagram Story later in the day.

Schure’s post reportedly featured a montage of Beyoncé sporting braided hairstyles throughout her career along with the words, “She slays. She slays. Now. Then. Always. #criticswithoutcredentials”; Schure’s Story did not mention Badu by name and at press time Schure had not responded to Billboard ‘s request for further comment. A spokesperson for Badu had also not responded to Billboard ‘s request for comment at press time.

It’s not the first time Badu has questioned Beyoncé’s fashion sense. In 2023, Badu dropped another “hmmm” alongside a photo of ‘Yonce wearing a metallic top hat during her Renaissance tour, writing “I guess I’m everyone’s stylist. Favorite chrome mirror hat.”

Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter album is due out on March 29.
