Hiking in Sardinia

Self-guided walking holiday in the supramonte mountains on sardinia’s wild east coast.

Captivating coastlines and stark inland wilderness welcome you on this self-guided hike in Sardinia’s wild east. This is a spectacularly rugged landscape, where 800-meter-high limestone cliffs rise from the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea. You will walk along the rough, ragged ridges of the Supramonte Mountains and follow narrow footpaths through the spectacular Gola di Gorropu gorge; one of Europe’s deepest canyons, with impressive white walls towering some 350 m high on both sides.

As if the scenery wasn’t enough, the hills are also dotted with fascinating historical sites. You will see one of the best of these near the top of Mount Tiscali , where you’ll find the ruins of a Nuragic village that dates back to the 6th century BC.

Finally, you head to the Gulf of Orosei , 40 km of beautiful coastline along the turquoise Mediterranean. Reward yourself for your efforts with a refreshing swim at Cala Luna – a stunning crescent-shaped beach which can only be reached on foot or by boat.

The walks are poorly to moderately marked, often on uneven footpaths, small tracks amongst shrubs and, on a rare occasion, on small gravel roads. Some routes (such as Monte Tiscali) are a bit demanding, with some sections of (easy) climbing in a desolate limestone area, with no springs or villages along the way.

Day 1: Arrive in Sardinia and relax

Arrive in Sardinia and take a local public bus to Oliena, where you are met and taken by car to the hotel located at the base of Monte Corrasi in a restored old farm building. Relax with a glass of  Cannonau  wine, a local speciality.

Overnight: Monte Maccione/Oliena with dinner included

Day 2: Monte Corrasi loop walk

Distance: 10 km | Ascent: 825 m | Descent: 815 m | 5 hrs approx.

Begin the day with a hearty breakfast on the outdoor terrace and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the Gennargentu National Park. Gaze out at the calcareous Supramonte Mountains and the stunning valleys which await you on your hike.

Today’s route is not particularly difficult; the well-marked trail gradually ascends to a plateau, before returning on a different route.

Day 3: From Monte Maccione to Su Gologone spring

Distance: 14 km | Ascent: 395 m | Descent: 990 m | 5 hrs approx.

Today’s walk leads you through the beautiful Holm oak woods that cover the lower slopes of the Supramonte. During the walk you will have numerous great views of the valleys of Oliena and Guthiddai. If you wish you can climb the steep, rocky slope of the Scala di Sovana to the Punta Cusidore, halfway along today’s walk.

At the end of the walk you have the option of continuing for another 2 km to the limestone source of Su Gologone. This ‘Laghetto Sorgenti Carsiche Su Gologone’ is a narrow canyon, which is 108 m deep, and the most important water supply of Sardinia.

Overnight: Dorgali with dinner included

Day 4: From Rio Flumineddu to Tiscali via ovili huts

Distance: 11 km | Ascent: 700 m | Descent: 700 m | 5 hrs approx.

Today begins with a short transfer to Rio Flumineddu (15min). You then start walking along the Scala de Surtana valley; a right turn leads you to a limestone plateau where 2 beautiful ovili huts have been recently restored: have a look inside to admire the fine technique that is needed to build them. You descend again to the valley before starting your ascent of Monte Tiscali. Near the top you can visit the remains of a prehistoric Nuraghe village. After passing through the wooded gorge of Surtana, you descend to the Flumineddu river, where you will be picked up for a short ride back to the hotel.

Day 5: Gola di Gorropu walk or alternative route to Silana

Distance: 11 km | Ascent: 320 m | Descent: 689 m | 3½ hrs approx.

Delve deep into Italy’s deepest gorge: the Gola di Gorropu, with its stunning, vertical white walls over 350 m high. It’s a long but easy walk to get there, where you can peer into the belly of the earth and scramble over the huge boulders within. Short morning and afternoon transfer to/from the start of the walk.

Alternative walk: Suttaterra to Dorgali

Distance: 15 km | Ascent: 341 m | Descent: 177 m | 5 hrs approx.

This route follows the mountain ridge, starting near the Silana Pass and going all the way to the town of Dorgali. Along the route there are spectacular coastal views of the Gulf of Orosei and inland to the Supramonte range. The route is quite easy, without any remarkable ascents or descents; it is not marked but the path is well-beaten.

Day 6: Walk from Dorgali to Cala Gonone

Distance: 10 km | Ascent: 486 m | Descent: 958 m | 4 hrs approx.

A short transfer takes you just outside Dorgali ,  where you start the walk via an old tunnel that connects Dorgali with Cala Gonone. The track climbs to the top of Monte Bardia, from where there is a long gradual descent. You have several great views into both valleys during the walk.

Optional ascent of Monte Irveri (616 m).

Overnight: Cala Gonone

Day 7: Cala Luna beach

Today you can choose among two different walking routes or a variety of other activities. From Cala Gonone you can choose between several boat trips (like the visit to the Blue Marina sea cave, which you will also pass if you return from Cala Luna by boat). Another option is to visit the Nuraghe Mannu site. You can also go diving, kayaking and fishing

Walk option 1: Cuccuru su Corvu to Cala Gonone

Distance: 16 km | Ascent: 569 m | Descent: 946 m | 6 hrs approx.

Optional transfer to the start of the walk from where you climb to Sedda e s’Atta and enjoy a stunning panoramic view over the gulf. You then descend into a canyon and follow the river bed to the famous Cala Luna beach (which can only be reached on foot or by boat) Take a refreshing swim and enjoy a picnic lunch before continuing along the coastal trail to Cala Gonone.

Walk option 2: Cala Gonone to Cala Luna

Distance: 9 km | Ascent: 405 m | Descent: 402 m | 4 hrs approx.

Starting from the harbour of Cala Gonone, you follow the coastal road to Cala Fuili. From here, you take another winding coastal trail that brings you to the beautiful beach of Cala Luna. You can return the same way you came or take a boat back.

Day 8: Arrivederci Cala Gonone!

The trip and our services end after breakfast.

Getting to Oliena

Departure from cala gonone.

Hiking the Selvaggio Blu Trek in Sardinia

Year-round, but spring and fall are best

Olbia, Sardinia is 1.5 hours away

Things to know

An irresistible challenge for the adventurous at heart, the Selvaggio Blu Trek (literally the Wild Blue) is a mythical 25-mile trail piercing its way along Sardinia’s rugged east coast. Charged by the Mediterranean sun and invigorated by the breeze of the Tyrrhenian Sea, you’ll traverse this demanding trail on a guided week-long hiking adventure—which also includes scrambling, abseiling, and rock climbing. The rewards are immense and the views unforgettable: massive limestone spires emerging from the sea, agile mouflons relishing stoic juniper trees, rugged coastal cliffs sheltering hidden coves, and golden sandy beaches. Replenish your energy under Italian starry skies and revel in the gratitude of accomplishing this challenging trek.

Revel in Sardinia’s untouched wilderness, away from the crowds and civilization

One of the most challenging treks in the world: hike, climb, abseil, and scramble

Spectacular vistas all along this 25-mile trek—beaches, cliffs, canyons, and so much more

sardinia hiking tour

Often regarded as one of the most challenging treks in the world, Sardinia’s Selvaggio Blu is not for the faint of heart. This 25-mile trail winds its way along the island’s east, rugged coastline, demanding the adventurers to scramble, hike, rock climb, and abseil. With an IFMGA-certified guide by your side, you will navigate Sardinian wilderness safely over the course of a week, and as the day draws to a close, you’ll retreat to a secluded spot for a night under the stars. All the accommodation, food, and transport is settled, so it’s up to you to just enjoy this demanding adventure!

Arrive in Olbia, Sardinia. There’s an evening transfer from the Olbia Airport to your accommodation for the next 2 nights—a 3* hotel in Cala Gonone, just 200 m (650 ft) from the beach. Meet your guide and the rest of your team for a meet and greet session and a technical introduction. Accommodation: 3* hotel in Cala Gonone Luggage access: Yes

Cala Gonone, Sardinia

Today includes a half-day session for rope skills training in a rugged canyon in the Supramonte region. The series of training abseils will gradually get more challenging, simply to make sure everyone is confident with abseiling. Return to Cala Gonone and explore the town on your own—try out pizza, local wine, or gelato. Tomorrow the trek begins. Accommodation: 3* hotel in Cala Gonone Luggage access : Yes Meals: Breakfast and lunch Activity time : 3-4 hours Elevation: +50 m / +165 ft | -200 m / -655 ft

Harness on a beach in Sardinia

Transfer to Pedra Longa to begin the trek. Enjoy your first, relatively-non-technical day except for a short upwards scramble (though usually not required, it may be roped so harnesses and ropes will be carried just in case). There will also be downclimbing a short section via a juniper tree attached to the mountainside. Tonight you’ll sleep out (bivouac) under the stars, in a small clearing near rocky Portu Pedrosu. A crew will arrive by boat to deliver water and supplies. Accommodation: Bivouac Luggage access: No Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner Hiking: 9 hours Distance: 12 km / 7.5 miles Elevation: +1,200 m / +3,940 ft | -1,200 m / -3,940 ft

Pedra Longa, Sardinia

Juniper trees and branches will aid your progress today—they’re living history, as locals have engineered and worked with this hardy tree in this manner for centuries. You’ll also come across Sardinian shepherds’s hut enroute, called “oviles”. Going up and over Punta Salinas, you’ll pass through the spectacular UNESCO World Heritage beach of Cala Goloritzè, famous for its monumental rock spire and azure seas. Have your second food stop as there’s 2 more hours left of trekking today (with 2 roped climbing sections) to take you to the wild bivvy spot up on the plateau of Piredda. The crew will greet you there and resupply. Accommodation: Bivouac Luggage access: No Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner Hiking: 8.5 hours Distance: 12 km / 7.5 miles Elevation: +1,400 m / +4,595 ft | -900 m / -2,955 ft

Cala Goloritzè beach

More technical climbing and abseiling begins today! The first part of the day is spent trekking, dropping down to the sea. Then you’ll have a few short abseils scattered across the whole afternoon before you reach the bivouac point for the night—which is a cave. The route will take you from Punta Salinas to Bacu su Felieu with some elevation change to tackle. Accommodation: Bivouac Luggage access: No Meals: Not included, you bring a dehydrated meal for tonight Hiking: 6 hours Distance: 6 km / 3.8 miles Elevation: +660 m / +2,165 ft | -1,160 m / -3,805 ft

Juniper trees, Selvaggio Blu

Abseil from the bivouac spots and trek for a couple of hours. You’ll have 2 longer abseils in the afternoon, and later on you’ll have some chained sections, climbing sections, and shorter abseils. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot the local Sardinian mouflon, tenacious characters able to negotiate impossibly steep terrain. Gaze down over the Mediterranean pristine turquoise waters as you lower your way down to the beach, where you’ll enjoy a locally-sourced dinner. There’s a planned boat resupply. Accommodation: Bivouac Luggage access : No Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner Hiking: 6.5 hours Distance: 7 km / 4.3 miles Elevation: +1,150 m / +3,775 ft | -1,150 m / -3,775 ft

Sardinian mouflon

This last non-technical day is a perfect end to your trek. Sea permitting, the crew will arrive to take the climbing kit to make your daypacks lighter. Enjoy this morning’s final section of the trek as you hike to Cala Luna for a celebratory lunch on the beach. Relax on the spectacular boat trip over the Cala Gonone to spend the final night at a hotel Accommodation: Bivouac Luggage access : Yes Meals: Breakfast and lunch Hiking: 3.5 hours Distance: 8 km / 5 miles Elevation: +1,200 m / +3940 ft | -1,200 m / -3,940 ft

Cala Sisine, Sardinia

There will be a private group transfer back to Olbia this morning after breakfast, which gives you a great opportunity to explore Olbia before heading back home. Time permitting, enjoy those last few hours on the beautiful beaches of Olbia or soak up the local history, views, and cuisine. If you’d like to stay longer, just ask your guides for some recommendations! Meals: Breakfast

Olbia coastline

This itinerary is designed to complete the Selvaggio Blu Trek in a relatively self-contained way—this means minimal resupply points, some of which are dependent on sea conditions. Please be aware that if the sea does not permit small vessels to reach beaches as planned, then more food and water will need to be carried, and Day 7 could potentially involve heavier day sacks.

  • Airport pick-up and drop-off

What’s not included:

  • Personal drinks and snacks
  • Guide gratuities — optional

Often described as one of the most challenging treks in the world, the Selvaggio Blu Trek is a 40-kilometer (25-mile) route running along the east coast of Sardinia that demands excellent fitness. This is a tough trek on a rough trail with steep climbs and scree descents. Daily distances are between 7-12 km (4-7.5 miles) with ascents and descents of up to 1,000 m (3,280 ft) as well as abseiling and climbing sections.

In order to join this tour, you must have excellent fitness and not be afraid of heights. Keep in mind that you’ll be carrying a 10-15 kg bag (22-33 lbs). Previous experience with climbing and abseiling is essential (putting yourself onto a prepared abseil rope, though your IFMGA-qualified guide will provide instruction on the ropes section). Any experience with via ferrata, wild camping, and cooking by stove is not necessary, but more than welcome.

Here’s a list of the equipment you need to bring:

  • Backpack large enough to carry all the items listed + some group equipment (around a 45-60L bag)
  • Hiking poles — optional
  • Week’s worth hiking clothing
  • Water bottle or hydration bladder (2L capacity)
  • Lightweight hiking boots or shoes
  • Spare clothes for layering
  • Waterproof rain jacket
  • Toiletries (sunscreen, hand sanitizer, bug spray, toilet paper, etc.)
  • Headlamp or flashlight
  • Camera — optional (but recommended)

Dress comfortably and for the weather in clothes you can move in. We suggest bringing clothing appropriate for the season. Layers are best and don’t wear jeans.

This adventure along the Selvaggio Blu Trek is designed in a way to make sure you’re well-rested and prepared prior to starting the trek. This involves staying at a hotel for the first two nights, at which time you’ll have access to all your luggage.

However, as soon as you start your trek (on Day 3), you’ll only carry what you need for the duration of those few days while sleeping under the stars. You’ll be sleeping in bivvy bags with a large tarpaulin, and you’ll have to carry your personal belongings as well as a share of the group equipment. You can expect your backpack to weigh between 10-15 kg (22-33 lbs), so make sure you have a backpack large enough to carry everything you need. You’ll have access to the rest of the luggage as soon as you end your trek, which is on Day 7 when you’ll get a good night’s sleep in a hotel.

Group sizes and prices:

  • For this guided hiking tour along the Selvaggio Blu Trek, the maximum client-to-guide ratio is 8:1.
  • It takes a minimum of 4 people for this tour to operate, and 8 is the maximum group size.
  • The cost does not decrease as the group grows.

Sardinia Tours & Trips

Sardinia is a unique island located in the Mediterranean sea . The territory belongs to Italy and encompasses more than 2,000 km of coastline. It is the perfect destination for travellers who enjoy spending their time at the beach or for mountain enthusiasts always on the lookout for the next hike. The island's rugged landscape is due to the presence of nuraghi, stone ruins dating back from the Bronze Age, in the shape of beehives. Cagliari is the island's capital and is an enchanting city with a powerful medieval presence.

Cycling in Sardinia

My husband and I had a wonderful time touring the west coast of Sardegna. The scenery was absolutely magical. The level of riding was on the high end of medium difficulty. We could not have completed the 320 kms in 6 days without the e-bikes. The gps app was fantastic. We were leary about going self-guided prior to the tour, but the gps app made it very easy to navigate. The accommodations were a bit volatile, some nice, some not so nice. First, one of the agritourismos charged us 40 euro per person for a very mediocre meal. Unfortunately, we had to eat there as there were no other options. Additionally, they had a mean little dog that unprovoked, nipped my husband (Sa Perda Mercada). Secondly, in Gonessa at B&B Domus de Janas, there was hardly a breakfast and it wasn't easy getting access to the accommodation, i.e no service. Of the other accommodations, Villa Canu and Hotel Le Torri were nice because they had pools, Muma Hostel was acceptable, agritourismo Terranieddas was in a beautiful setting and they served a wonderful meal for 30 euro which they let us split, i.e. 15 euro per person, the Marin hotel was just ok, but they had extremely friendly and helpful employees and the best breakfast of the trip. Additionally, I didn't find the man that ran the orientation (and also led the guided tour) very friendly or helpful to those not on the guided tour. Finally, it would improve the tour for the non-guided participants if the gps routes had more information regarding stops for drinks and food along the way. In summary, we thoroughly enjoyed the trip, met some nice people along the way and we would definitely, highly recommend this trip to others. We only offer criticisms to help better the Dolcevita experience for future participants.

What people love about sardinia tours.

Excellent private tour, comfortable accomodations, fine meals, knowledgeable tour guides, exceptional tour service.

Sardinia Wild Blue Zone Trek

Trip Overview

Experiential Journeys are quickly becoming the way to travel. You can now choose to travel in the style you're used to and at the same time feel assured your choices are benefiting our beautiful planet.

The Green Travel trend is hitting the shores of every sought-after destination. What better way to get involved than to choose a more mindful Sardinian vacation with us?

Sardinia's east coast and interior comprise one of the last wilderness sanctuaries on the Mediterranean Sea. And the Selvaggio Blu is one of the best ways – if not the only – to truly explore its entire coastline. At Dolomite Mountains, we believe it's vital to protect this wild paradise. Along with our partnerships, we've created an exclusive, greener, more immersive experience allowing growth and profitability for the Sardinian community and culture while conserving its wilderness.

You'll discover unexplored beaches, hidden between vast limestone cliffs in fantastic shades of purple, grey, and black.

The Orosei coastline is 40 kilometers (25 miles) long, spreading north from Santa Maria Navarrese to Cala Luna, offering a captivating harmony between mountain and sea. White, calcareous cliffs rise 800 meters (2,625') high out of the clear blue waters of the Golfo di Orosei, dropping sharply into the sea. Oak and Juniper trees, Syrian pines, and broom brush cover the hillsides, providing a rich green Mediterranean contrast to the bright limestone plunging into the ocean.

On this incredible trek, you'll hike north along the coastline of one of the most beautiful gulfs of the Mediterranean: the Orosei. You won't find panoramas like these in other places in Sardinia. And the food! Enjoy the Sardinian food and wine and the hospitality of the local people.

But this is not a trek for the faint of heart – or those with a fear of heights! Narrow rocky footpaths lead you over undulating trails along the sea cliffs. Where rocks close the way, climbs and rappels are necessary. While defined as the wildest trek in Italy, Selvaggio Blu is the most unblemished and beautiful. The valleys inland open their way to the sea, shaping beautiful coves where you can refresh with a swim. You'll spend two nights on a private boat anchored to the shores of white sandy beaches, floating gently on crystal clear waters for which Sardinia is known. What a fantastic way to enjoy afternoon dips and well-earned relaxation on the deck! Beat the crowds, join us and choose a path less traveled.

  • Challenge yourself on what many consider “the most difficult trek in Italy” as you hike on rugged terrain winding along Sardinia’s breathtaking Orosei Gulf!
  • Explore the Orosei coastline, one of the most beautiful areas of Sardinia, where narrow gorges, imposing chalk rocks, wide plateaus, and hidden canyons run in an uninterrupted stretch of natural beauty toward the sea
  • Discover Sardinia’s famous beaches, characterized by white sand, transparent water, and intense turquoise colors
  • Spend 5 nights sleeping in tents / under the stars
  • Enjoy the Sardinian food, wine, and hospitality of the local people
  • This itinerary is part of our commitment to responsible travel and our partnership with The Long Run, one of the world’s largest sustainable development initiatives led by nature-based businesses

Trip itinerary may vary based on weather conditions, fitness levels and abilities of participants, and/or the recommendations of the Dolomite Mountains Team and your mountain guide. Daily mileage and altitude gain may vary depending on the device used.

Arrive in Sardinia

Arrive at Cagliari Elmas International Airport (CAG) and have a private  group transfer to Santa Maria Navarrese  (2.5-hour transfer, 150km / 93 miles), Late afternoon and pre-wilderness briefing.

Farmhouse accommodation (D)

Ginnirco – porto pedrosu – quau.

Transfer to Ginnircu in the morning and start your hike to Capo Monte Santu, a rocky elbow teetering a thousand feet over the deep blue sea and continue walking along the edge of 200-meter (656') cliffs, high above the sea. From Capo Monte Santu, it is approximately four hours to Portu Pedrosu and Portu Quau, two beautiful small fjords surrounded by grey limestone. Tented overnight at the beach. (6 hours hiking, Elevation gain +150 m. Height difference - 700 m, 450m / 1,476' descent)

Farmhouse Accommodation (B,D,L)

Pedrosu-cuau– cala goloritzé – altopiano di golgo (su porteddu).

Transfer to Iribidosilli by car and hike to Punta Salinas for a fantastic view of the Mediterranean sea and the vertical limestone cliffs that fall into the Orosei gulf. A fast descent brings you to the astonishing Aguglia di Goloritze and on to the stunning white and blue cove of Goloritzé.

Tent night (B,D,L)

Cala goloritzè to cala mariolu.

Hike from Cala Goloritzè to Cala Mariolu

Cala Mariolu – Grotta del Fico

The Grotta del Fico is probably the most beautiful cave in Sardinia. You are sure to be amazed by the spectacular formations, lights and shadows that dance along the walls and in the water, and fresh water falls inside the cave. Beyond its beauty, it is important in both the history of Sardinian speleology (the scientific study of caves and other karst features) and wildlife research, specifically monk seals, who were last seen here in the early 1980s. Boat transfer to Santa Maria Navarrese and overnight in hotel for the last two nights. Dinner at leisure (not included). 6 hours hiking -  Elevation gain +: 300 m. Height difference -: 300 m

Grotta del Fico – Cala Sisine

Cala sisine to cala luna.

In the morning ascend inland along a deep valley called Badde de Lupiru to Punta Onamarra (730m / 2,395'). At Cuile Girove Longu, you’ll pass between a sheepfold and a Pinnettu – an old hut built with branches and stones, where shepherds take shelter from the hot sun or heavy rains, but above all where they join each other around the fire to have a piece of cheese and a glass of good wine! Further along you’ll pass a number of circular charcoal hearths, and enjoy occasional views of Cala Gonone en route. The view over the Gulf is breathtaking! You’ll cross a limestone crest (630m / 2,130'), from where you begin your descent, zigzagging down a rough stony path. On the hike down, you’ll pass S'Arcada S'Architieddu Lupiru – a beautiful rock window on your right set high along the cliffs. Definitely worth a short detour to see it up close! Descend to Cala Luna, or "Moon Cove", where you will again have an afternoon to swim in crystal-clear waters and relax. This beach is a crescent of white sand backed by high limestone cliffs. It is striking not only for it’s “typical” Mediterranean combination of crystal blue green waters set off by white sand and cliffs, but for beautiful pink oleanders set in the middle of the cliffs, where a stream provides some welcome shade. In the afternoon, return by boat to Santa Maria Navarrese. Travel time: 5h Height difference +: 650 m. Height difference -: 650 m

Hotel in Santa Maria Navarrese (B,D,L)

Sardinia: The Costa Verde (Green Coast)

When embarking on your self-guided hiking adventure in Sardinia, Italy, specifically in the region of Sulcis-Iglesiente, you will immediately sense why it is called Costa Verde – The Green Coast. This remote and wild region has a rich industrial-mining past that has shaped both the landscape and its people. The remnants of abandoned mine sites coexist harmoniously with the natural beauty, creating a unique blend that evokes a sense of curiosity and a story waiting to be told. In 2007, this mining area was recognized by UNESCO and added to the Geoparks list. As you journey south, you will encounter the warm and hospitable Sardinian people, known for their helpfulness, welcoming nature, and sense of humor tinged with sardonic laughter. Centuries of invasions have shaped their resilience and character. The Sulcis region is renowned in the world of wines, particularly for the Carignano grape, which thrives in arid conditions and grows close to the ground due to the strong winds. Many families maintain small vineyards to produce the exquisite Carignano del Sulcis, a wine worth savoring. Concluding your trip to the island of Sant’Antioco is a perfect choice. Here, you can explore stunning views, and ancient watchtowers, and immerse yourself in the multifaceted charm of the island. Optional activities such as fishing boat trips and horse riding allow you to delve deeper into the various facets of this captivating destination.

Meals provided: dinner.

We begin our day with a short drive into the Lanaittu Valley to the Sa Oche Refuge where our walk starts. We set out from Sa Oche, initially along a wide gravel road which later narrows to a rocky footpath, as we climb up to the ancient site of the village of Tiscali, located in a depression at the top of the mountain of the same name. Invisible until you climb down into the depression, it's thought the village was built here for defensive reasons. A number of nuraghe dating back to the first millennium BC can be seen. The Nuragic civilization of Sardinia lasted from the 1800 BC (Bronze Age) to the 2nd century BC, with its name deriving from the nuraghe, a fortress-tower construction, the remains of which now dot the Sardinian landscape. The cult of water was an important element of the Nuragic religion and many well-temples and sacred springs were constructed. In the centre of the site a wide window in the rock opens out onto the Lanaittu valley below. We descend to Sa Oche by a different route, taking us through a narrow gorge with lush vegetation where, if we are lucky, we could spot wild boar or a family of wild mouflon sheep.

Today's Moderate grade 9.5 kilometre/5.9 mile walk is expected to take around 4 hours with a total ascent and descent of 580 metres/1902 feet.

Meals Provided: Breakfast & Lunch

Today's walk will take us to one the most spectacular viewpoints in Sardinia, offering panoramic views over the whole of the Supramonte Mountains and beyond. The Supramonte range is characterised by its rugged karst (limestone) topography from which rivers have carved out deep canyons and ravines.

After driving to the start point of our walk near the Hotel Monte Maccione, we climb up onto the barren limestone plateau that stretches between the peaks of Monte Corrasi and Punta Sos Nidos. We ascend Monte Corrasi first; at 1463 metres/4800 feet it's the highest peak in the Supramonte. The views from here are simply astounding, reaching from Punta La Marmora (Sardinia's highest peak)) and the Gennargentu Mountains to the west to the Oddoene Valley and the Mediterranean Sea to the east. After enjoying the view, we continue at first downhill and then uphill again to the summit of Punta Sos Nidos (1348 metres/4422 feet) for a great view down into the Valley of Oliena, hundreds of metres below. The final stretch of our trek takes us back to our starting point.

Today's Challenging grade 12 kilometre/7.5 mile walk is expected to take around 7 hours with a total ascent and descent of 1000 metres/3281 feet.

Meals Provided: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Today's walk is in the amazing Gorge of Gorropu, dug out by the forces of the Flumineddu River. After breakfast we drive along one of the island's most panoramic roads, to the trailhead of the path at the Genna Silana Pass at a little over 1000 metres/3281 feet. From here we walk along a steep gravel track leading slowly down to the canyon entrance, passing through the fragrant Mediterranean maquis, coloured by wildflowers and the red fruits of the strawberry trees. On arrival at the gorge, local guides will explain the nature and geology of this amazing canyon after which we set out to walk and explore this wonder of nature on our own. The further we hike into the gorge, the bigger the boulders we have to climb over and the narrower the passages we have to squeeze through, until we reach the point where the base of the gorge is only 5 metres feet wide. From here we make our way to the gorge entrance and follow an easy trail along the river to our pick-up point near a bridge over the river.

Today's Moderate grade 10.5 kilometre/6.5 mile walk is expected to take around 5 hours with a total ascent of 65 metres/213 feet and descent of 800 metres/2624 feet.

We say goodbye to the agriturismo this morning and head for the coast to experience a different side of Sardinia. En route we'll stop at Dorgali, a small agricultural town known for its crafts and ceramics. Travelling on to the coast by public bus (our luggage is transferred by private vehicle), our next 3 nights will be spent at a hotel in the seaside village of Cala Gonone on the Gulf of Orosei. This is a laid back place where life gravitates towards the long seafront promenade with a scattering of bars and restaurants and a gently shelving beach.

The rest of the day is left free. You may choose to take a break from walking to relax on the beach at Cala Gonone or nearby Cala Fuili or catch a boat further along the coast to visit various other remote and beautiful beaches and caves.

Hotel Cala Luna (or similar)

Grade: Comfortable Hotel

Meals Provided: Breakfast

We catch a public bus inland this morning, to the trailhead close to Dorgali. We follow a track that connects Dorgali and Cala Gonone, passing through a short section (less than 200 metres/656 feet) of tunnel blasted through the rock. The tunnel is wide enough for a vehicle to pass through and light enough not to require torches so claustraphobia isn't an issue. The trail then ascends with great views all the way to the top of Monte Bardia (881 metres/2890 feet) from where there's a long and gradual descent to the coast. The trail is rocky and quite steep in parts.

Today's Challenging grade 11 kilometre/6.8 mile walk has a total ascent of 485metres/1591 feet and descent of 960 metres/3149 feet.

We catch a boat south to Cala Sisine this morning and enjoy fabulous coastal views of the limestone cliffs and turquoise waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Cala Sisine is an unspoilt sandy beach in a gorgeous cove from where we start our trek along a section of the renowned Selvaggio Blu trail. The Selvaggio Blu (Wild Blue) is a multi-day trek, abseiling and climbing expedition that runs for over 50 kilometres miles along a stretch of Sardinia's remote limestone east coast. But don't worry - the section from Cala Sisine to Cala Gonone that we hike involves only walking! The rocky trail undulates up and down the cliffs from Sisine to another beautiful beach, Cala Luna at 9 kilometres/5.6 miles from where there's an option to return to Cala Gonone by boat. For those wishing to continue, it's another 5.5 kilometres/3.4 miles on to the end of the trek, the beach at Cala Fuili, a 20 minute walk back to our hotel.

Today's Moderate grade 14.5 kilometre/9 mile walk is expected to take approximately 5.5 hours with a total ascent of 845metres/2772feet and descent of 910 metres/2985 feet.

Departing Cala Gonone we drive to Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport (OLB) where we will arrive about at 3.00 pm and this is where the holiday ends. The earliest time you should book a flight to depart today is 5.00 pm. (Please note the SAR 08OCT23 departure only will finish at Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport (OLB) at 9.00 am and the earliest time you should book a flight to depart today is 11.00 am.)

Wild Blue is defined 'The most challenging hike of Italy', this is a reductive and almost trial statement that does not do justice to this adventure that go through the wildest, inaccessible and beautiful part of Sardinia. The Wild Blue are five days of challenging day hikes in the heart of Ogliastra ... we'll move along a trail that is lost in space and time, through a wild coastal area characterized by wonderful mountain, imposing cliffs and a marvellous cobalt sea. Far from civilization, far from human settlements we'll be free from the guise of modern man ready to wondering about nature declined to its original splendor. We'll be ready to use ropes, harnesses and helmets that promise us breathtaking views and keep us always in safe.If we are tired we will find new energy just looking to the amazing beauty of the majestic limestone cliffs that plunge into a cobalt blue sea. It's called trekking, but forget to walk on well-marked trails, the Wild Blue will force us to face limestone rocks typical of Supramonte. In our wonderful trip we'll have the privilege to discover a 'concert of wonders' around us: beaches, a cobalt blue sea, towering cliffs, twisted junipers, spectacular spires, hidden fjords but above all a state of nature that preserves the primordial wilderness. Welcome to the Wild Blue...

TUESDAY  Day 3

After  dismantling the tents  and preparing our luggage, we’ll enjoy a  hearty breakfast , and by 9:00, we’ll begin the long descent towards the cove of  Portu Pedrosu . The rugged terrain will challenge our knees, but by lunch time we’ll enjoy a dip in the sea.

From sea-level we’ll walk through forests and canyons to reach our next camp at the panoramic ridge  Genna ‘e Mudrecu .

The route will lead us to discover  ancient shepherds’ huts , breathtaking  panoramas , and the beautiful  Cala Goloritzè . We will tackle some incredible  airy passages created by shepherds , following in the footsteps of these  courageous mountaineers . After numerous  equipped sections  and  rope descents , we will reach the  Bacu Padente  camp, where we will spend the night sheltered beneath the immense branches of majestic holm oaks.

FRIDAY  Day 6

On our  last day of walking , we will face the most significant  rope descents  of the  Selvaggio Blu , one even as long as  45 meters.  The trail finally becomes  less rugged , and the dense holm oak forests will offer  shade  for much of the route. From the last  rope descent , we will arrive at  Cala Sisine , where we will celebrate with a plunge into the sea.

From the beach we’ll have to walk 2 km to reach the cars that will give us a lift back to the Rifugio (1 hour off-road). We will spend the evening at the  campsite of the Rifugio  , and have a very abundant dinner at the restaurant.

HOW DIFFICULT IS THE SELVAGGIO BLU?

Using the  Difficulty Scale created by the Swiss Alpine Club , we would grade the Selvaggio Blu as T5, which is almost the hardest possible. Of course, we have readapted the Swiss scale to terrain without snow or ice.

T5 – CHALLENGING ALPINE WALKING

Often without a path. Individual, simple climbing sections.

Exposed. Challenging terrain, steep rocky slopes. Dense vegetation hides the path. Loose rocks, foliage and dirt make it difficult to walk. Danger of slipping.

REQUIREMENTS

Solid mountain boots are necessary. Approach shoes can be enough for those with solid mountain experience and excellent balancing skills. Secure terrain assessment and very good navigation skills. Good Alpine experience also in high Alpine terrain. Elementary knowledge in abseiling from improvised lower-offs.

I DON'T KNOW HOW TO ABSEIL, SHOULD I LEARN?

No, you don’t have to know how to abseil.

Our guides will take care of all rope maneuvers. You just have to relax and follow their instructions.

You just have to make sure you are not overly afraid of heights.

CAN I TAKE A DAY OFF IF I'M TIRED?

Yes, of course.  You would have to end the day but can take a rest the following day.

Say, for example, after 3 days of walking you are very tired…

Keep in mind that each day we receive a transfer in the evening to bring luggage and dinner, and another transfer in the morning to bring breakfast and collect the luggage.

After breakfast, you can jump on the Defender and get a lift to the Rifugio. Take a day off and in the evening you can jump on the same Defender again to join the group and continue your trekking on the following day.

WHAT DO WE DO IN CASE OF BAD WEATHER?

If it’s just drizzling we can wear our rain jackets and walk, or wait for it to finish in one of the many caverns. Reaching the camp we may find a large tarp our team has pulled above our table.

In case the weather is seriously bad  we would have to abandon the trail. We can:

  • Reach our daily destination, where instead of camping we will get a  transfer back to the Rifugio . We will eat at the Rifugio and sleep under a canopy. In case there’s availability you are welcomed to book a small bungalow or a room, but you shall pay this separately.
  • Start again the day after. Taking a transfer to where we interrupted our trek.

CANCELLATION

In the unfortunate case that you have to cancel your booking, we may keep part of it as a  voucher  that you may  re-use for a future booking  within the same year. This is subject to availability, and if we would not able to accommodate your trip in the same year, the voucher will be automatically extended to the next year.

CANCELLATION REFUNDS

Over 2 months of notice : we refund  100%  of what you paid

Over 21 days of notice:  we will refund  80%  of what you paid*

Less than 21 days of notice : we will refund  20%  of what you paid*

*= in some cases the online payment platform may keep 1.4% of the transaction

CANCELLATION BY SARDINIA TREKKING

In the unlikely event that we may be forced to cancel a tour, we will  refund 100%  of what you paid.

Although cancellations from our side are rare, we advise all participants to always purchase  insurance on flight tickets . This would guarantee no losses on your side.

You’ll hike along the high cliffs above the sea and trek under ancient watchtowers. Then, a boat will whisk you away to Sant’Antioco, where you’ll fish, horseback ride, or explore archaeological sites. At the end of the Sardinia Coastal Walk tour, you’ll already be wondering when you can return.

Itinerary for Sardinia Coastal Walking Tour

Arrival in buggerru.

As soon as you’ve arrived from Cagliari to Buggerru, views of the ocean and a relaxing day of exploring the town await you. Be sure to visit the ‘Henry Tunnel’ mining site, before spending the afternoon with the sun on your shoulders and the Sea of Sardinia in front of you to rest up for tomorrow’s adventures.

Day 2Buggerru to Portixeddu

Today, you will explore the beautiful terrain along the coast while walking to Portixeddu, where you will enjoy lovely views looking down on the beach from an elevated position. After a gradual climb for 5km, you will descend into a gorge towards a forest plantation and visit some military forts dating back to the Second World War.

Ingurtosu to Scivu

Day 3 begins with breakfast and a transfer to the village of Ingurtosu, where you will begin your walk to an ancient mining site known as Laveria Brassey. From there, you will trek to the dunes of Piscinas, where you’ll be alone amidst the sand and vast sea. It’s the largest desert area in this part of Europe, and it’s quite a sight! At the end of your walk, a short transfer will bring you to the agroturismo, where you will spend the next two nights in total relaxation.

Capo Pecora loop

The next portion of your Sardinian walking tour takes you back to the ocean. Stroll along the beach of Scivu to the Mediterranean macchia, where you’ll find a sweeping viewpoint waiting for you at the Capo Pecora granite promontory. Continue on to the tiny village of Portixeddu, where you can grab a coffee and watch the surfers along the beach while the sun sets. A brief transfer will bring you back to your accommodations at the agroturismo.

Overnight Location: Hotel in Majori

Porto Paglia to Portoscuso

Begin the morning with a transfer to Porto Paglia, where the trail is wild and untamed. You’ll trek up a sandy path to viewpoints overlooking the ocean and nearby towns- bring a camera! The trail is rugged, but you’ll feel like the only one enjoying this incredible place.

Carloforte loop

Begin the next portion of your walking tour of Sardinia with a ferry ride to Carloforte, where you’ll walk up a paved road to the northern side of the island. Here, they catch local tuna every May, so keep an eye on the lunch menu if you’re a seafood fan! You’ll take the ferry to Calasetta and then enjoy a private transfer to Sant’Antioco, where you can spend the rest of the evening drinking local wine and resting your legs.

Sant’Antioco loop via Torre Cannai

The morning begins with a transfer to Capo Sperone, where you’ll walk under the impressive Torre Cannai watchtower on your way to the beach of Maladroxia. Take some time to revel in the sun before spending your afternoon as you please- you can take a fishing tour, go horseback riding, or take a self-guided archaeological walk through town. Whatever you choose, you’re sure to enjoy it!

Departure from Sardinia

All too soon, you’ll enjoy your last breakfast before packing up to begin the trip home. Until next time!

From $6,395

Call 1-800-368-2794 or contact us for any questions

Scented with myrtle, dotted with ancient oak and olive trees, and home to one of the most diverse landscapes in Europe, Corsica is a wildly beautiful French island. Neighboring Sardinia, belonging to Italy, is an island-world with its own language, traditions, and churches where Christianity and Paganism intermingle. Our perfectly crafted journey combines these two Old World cultures with a mix of coastal and mountain hikes, evocative prehistoric sites, elegant picnics, wine tastings, and many opportunities to sample the delicious culinary traditions of two very different island realms. Our stay at the charming Hotel Su Gologone in Sardinia's Barbagia Mountains is a wonderful finale.

Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.
