Whitby Pleasure Boat Trips

If you like Whitby then you probably love the sea! There’s nothing better than a boat trip out to sea on the ‘better weather’ days.  We’ve put together a few of the available Boat Trip options for you to choose from.

Whitby Coastal Cruises.

Whitby Coastal Cruises offer a range of Boat Trips.  You can take a short sea trip from the Harbour for just £5 (under 5’s go free) The boats leave the harbour every 20 minutes throughout the day, so booking ahead is not needed.

You could also take a harbour tour, which takes in the harbour and marina then along the River Esk and underneath the viaduct towards Ruswarp. Boarding takes places opposite the Angel Hotel and the price is again, £5.

A longer Coastal Cruise takes you along the coastline where you will hopefully get to see some of the wildlife too. Did you know you could spot dolphins here in Whitby amongst other things!

Why not take a Sunset Cruise. These are available throughout Summer, and sail towards Sandsend for 45 minutes to enjoy the amazing sun setting over the sea. There is also a Twilight Cruise on offer, leaving the harbour at dusk to enjoy the last of the light, then return to enjoy the view of Whitby with its twinkling lights.

In September Whale Watching trips will also be available.

If you go down to the harbour you will easily be able to spot these pleasure boats as they are all painted yellow.

Yorkshire Coast Boat Trips

Take a trip on board ‘Coastal Explorer’ and discover the coast from Whitby to Scarborough. The trip takes you up the rugged coastline with some beautiful scenery, and the chance to see the amazing wildlife, which could include dolphins, seals, seabirds and whales, if you’re lucky!

In high season there are 4 trips a day. Either take a return trip, where you are able to stay in Scarborough a while and take a later trip back to Whitby; or choose a one way trip, and maybe catch one of the regular buses back to Whitby. This is said to be the ‘most scenic bus routes in the country’.

For those who enjoy cycling, then your cycles are also welcome on board. This way you not only get to enjoy your boat trip, but you could then take the popular Cinder Track cycle ride back to Whitby along the old railway lines. You can find more information on the Cinder Track Here .

6 Top Boston Harbor Cruises

Venture on the water to explore Beantown's waterfront, maritime history and more.

Exterior shot of the Boston Odyssey on the water with the Boston skyline in the background.

Courtesy of City Cruises by Hornblower

Boston is the most populous city in New England – and for good reason. This Massachusetts metropolis may host modern shopping, dining and cultural attractions , but Boston is built upon a rich American tapestry created over the centuries that's still visible in its quaint neighborhood streets and stone houses. The city's historic harbor along the Massachusetts Bay set the scene for a significant portion of Boston's story; once the site of Revolution-era protests like the Boston Tea Party, this body of water is now primarily used for revelry. No visit to Massachusetts' capital city would be complete without some time on Boston Harbor.

If you'll be in Beantown during the warmer months, consider boarding a schooner for an hour or two of sightseeing. Cruises on the harbor offer a range of historical tours, romantic dinners, unique brunches with friends or even the chance to spot some endangered whales. Whether you opt for a tall ship or a smaller vessel, soak in city views and enjoy your time on the water with the following top Boston Harbor cruises.

Boston Harbor City Cruises by Hornblower – Boston Harbor Whale Watch Cruise

Price: Adults from $70; kids from $50 Duration: 3-4 hours

Hornblower's City Experiences brand offers a wide variety of land-based and on-the-water tours. One of the most popular options is its whale watching cruise, which it operates with the New England Aquarium . From Boston's Central Wharf, you'll head to Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, one of the world's most active marine sanctuaries. Whales in the region include humpbacks, minke whales, the endangered right whales and more. You can also try to spot sea birds, dolphins and other marine life. Travelers say the boat tour is great fun and most report seeing whales on the trip.

Tours generally run daily from spring through fall. Exact departure times vary by season. You'll want to arrive at least 15 minutes early and take some medication if you're prone to motion sickness. If you plan to pair this cruise with a trip to the aquarium, you can book a combo ticket to save a bit of money. Boston Harbor City Cruises also runs a variety of dinner cruises.

Liberty Fleet of Tall Ships – Boston Harbor Day Sail

The crew is happy to answer questions about Boston during the sail, but know that there is no narration during the tour. Travelers delight in both the tour and the boat, noting excellent views.

The fleet sails Boston Harbor from summer through early fall. Sails typically depart several times each day in the afternoon; however, specific times may vary depending on the day of the week. You can also hop onboard for a brunch cruise, a fireworks cruise or for the yearly USS Constitution turnaround sail.

Classic Harbor Line Boston – Northern Lights Sunset Cruise

A Classic Harbor Line Boston boat sails against the sunset.

Price: From $45 Duration: 2 hours

Along this evening tour, you'll be treated to skyline views as the sun dips below the horizon. During the journey, you'll also learn a little about Boston's history and its best sites such as Fort Independence, the USS Constitution , Old North Church's steeple and more. Refreshments are available for purchase onboard. Travelers approve of the cruise – especially the gorgeous ship – and its staff.

Departure times and days vary depending on both the sunset and the season. Keep in mind that ticket fees will be slightly higher in the high season. The company also hosts a number of themed and food cruises, such as holiday cruises and a trip that focuses on beer and barbecue.

Boston Duck Tours

Price: Adults from $52.99; kids from $37.99

Duration: 80 minutes

It's nearly impossible to visit Boston and not run into one of its renowned Duck Tours. This type of amphibious automobile was originally created as a military vehicle for World War II. The vehicles used today by Boston Duck Tours are uniquely designed to roll past city sights like Boston Common , the Old North Church and the Fanueil Hall Marketplace before or after launching into the Charles River for views of the Cambridge and Boston skylines. Past customers remember these unique tours as one of the best parts of their visit – and as a special draw for kids, the tour guides may allow children to briefly steer the boat in the water for a particularly memorable experience.

Trips depart from the New England Aquarium, Museum of Science and the Prudential Center; tour prices are the same regardless of departure point. Tours run in the warmer months, usually from late spring to fall. It's a good idea to book online in advance to secure your preferred tour time.

Major flooding in San Juan County sweeps away boats in exchange for safety

by David Ochoa, KUTV

(Courtesy Justin Olsen)

BLUFF, Utah (KUTV) — Boats and gear were washed away in San Juan County over the weekend as water rose several feet in a matter of minutes, flooding everything out.

Justin Olsen and his family were looking forward to a good time camping on the San Juan River last Friday.

Olsen is an avid boater and knew flash flooding was a possibility, but even he was surprised about the sheer amount of water that ended up swallowing their campground.

At about 2:30 p.m. Friday, the Olsen family were enjoying a ride on the river. It was sunny with blue skies.

The campsites they wanted were taken, so they had to go down a little further. Once they got to their campsite a couple of hours later, things changed.

“The clouds were coming and then we got hit with a rainstorm that was like a hurricane level wind and rain,” Olsen said. “It was insane.”

A video Olsen took showed their campsite at 5 p.m. showing the flowing water and a group of people standing on a ledge nearby.

At the same time, just a few miles away, Olsen’s dad took another video. It shows water flowing over Highway 163. All of it was headed toward Olsen.

“And then the creek started to rise. And then it continued to rise,” Olsen said.

They decided that if the creek continued to rise, they would just let their boats go.

And just minutes later, the water rose higher than they thought possible.

MORE on FLOODING:

“The water went from maybe four, five feet deep to 30 feet deep,” Olsen said.

So, they let the boats go.

"We were on a rocky ledge and the water was going around us, and as soon as the water breached that ledge and started hitting us in the ankles, that's when we said we're done. Let them go, get up high,” he said.

Olsen ran to see if the boats would get caught on something, but they kept floating down the large stream of water.

Their boats and gear were gone, but no one was hurt, and they got out of the area with the help of search and rescue.

“I've probably seen over 100 maybe 200 flash floods, and this was like ten times what I would've expected to come out of that side stream,” Olsen said.

Olsen said his boats are probably somewhere in Lake Powell right now, but the gear can be replaced and he's just happy everyone made it out okay.

Milwaukee is the best boating city in Wisconsin, a study says. Here's where you can rent a boat

Milwaukee ranks as Wisconsin's most popular boating location, according to a data report by Getmyboat.

The data was based on boat rental demand and bookings from across Wisconsin, as boat owners register their boats in different cities.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, in 2023 approximately 611, 788 boats were registered in Wisconsin.

Getmyboat analyzed average hourly rental cost and trip rates. Particularly expensive options were left out of the data to avoid giving outlier prices an outsized influence on cost. Rental types were categorized to determine a city's ranking.

On average, it costs $178 to rent a boat in Milwaukee and about $468 to charter a trip with a captain or go on a boat tour. Individuals typically ride the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan.

Pontoons are Milwaukee's most popular boat style

Pontoons are Milwaukee's most popular boat style, according to the Getmyboat study.

Ryan Bennett, a boat owner and captain of a "Tri-toon" pontoon along the Milwaukee River, receives 15 to 20 inquires a week for boat rentals. "They (pontoons) are easily accessible for all types of boat users," he said.

Pontoons can fit eight to 12 people.

Bennett's boat consists of three pontoons and can hold steady through rough waters.

Some individuals prefer to just cruise with family and friends while others would like to stop for a drink, said Bennett.

If the pontoon is well equipped, boaters can enjoy activities like water skiing, tubing and wakeboarding.

Here's a list of boat rental options in Milwaukee:
