Fallout: New Vegas - Honest Hearts Walkthrough - Starting out in Zion

Fallout: New Vegas - Honest Hearts Walkthrough - Starting out in Zion

Happy Trails Are Ahead

You can start this DLC off by marking the “Happy Trails Expedition” quest on your map, and then walking to the north of New Vegas to find the Northern Passage. It’s just a cave in the wall. Go into it to find the caravan waiting for their new recruit.

Talk to Jed first, but then talk to Stella for some background and talk to Ricky for a few business opportunities. If you have 45 points in Medicine, you can note that he’s addicted to Psycho. You can then sell him some Psycho for 30 a piece, or Fixer for 80 a piece or you can tell him to leave.

You can also question him about his vault suit and pip-boy. He obviously didn’t grow up in Vault 22, judging by the lack of spores, so you can call him out on that. If you have 45 in Science or 50 in Speech, you can also point out that his Pip-Boy isn’t working. You can then either make him carry some of your gear or make him leave the caravan.

It’s basically up to you. Tell Jed that you’re ready to go, and he’ll pull the weight check. You’ll need 50 points in Survival or the Strong Back or Pack Rat perk to convince him that you can carry more than that. These will let you get up to 100 pounds of gear. Drop off whatever you don’t need in the crate lying next to him, send any companions back to the Lucky 38 and then tell him when you’re ready to go. The only thing I’ll note is that you probably don’t need to bring brush guns or anti-materiel rifles, because you’ll be able to pick a few up at the start and quickly repair them to 100%.

Just bring a good unique weapon or two, along with some ammo. I wouldn’t bother bringing a pistol, since the new .45 auto pistol will be fine, and you can buy all the ammo you need for it in Zion. A rifle like ‘This Machine" will be good though, or any energy weapons. Just remember to bring lots of ammo for them, since you won’t find that many ammo sources in Zion.

Unhappy Trails

Honest Hearts - The White Legs Ambush

For the time being, just follow Jed until the ambush, and then take cover by a rock. You can’t save them, especially since the machine gunner will be invulnerable until Jed dies. Once the caravan is down, pop up and put a few shots into the gunner. Look down the path, or just to the right of the cliff, to spot another two snipers waiting by the bridge. Pick them both off to clear the way.

Loot as much as you want now. There’s some decent gear among the caravan guards, and the White Legs are packing some heavy firepower too. Try to get a fully repaired anti-materiel rifle, since you can trade that in a few minutes for 4000 caps worth of goods. When you cross the bridge, you’ll come under fire. Just wait for a second. Another tribal will run up and kill the gunner. A lot of people have had this problem. Follows-Chalk can easily be hit by friendly fire if you try to kill the gunner, which will make the entire zone of Zion hostile to you. Just hold your fire and then cross over to meet him and make your new friend.

The Burned Man

Honest Hearts - The Path to the Burned Man

Join up with him and follow the path. Check the tree trunk if you want. Watch the Yao Guai for a moment, and then follow the path up to the right to get a better view of the area. You’ll also get to kill a Yao Guai cub and a giant. If you have a decent rifle, they should actually die pretty easily.

If you go out to the cliff, Follows-Chalk will mark the nearby landmarks for you. Once that’s done, just go back and follow the road until you get to the Welcome Booth. You’ll probably see a few White Legs and geckos, so stay alert and keep your gun out. At the booth, feel free to loot it and then move in to the river. Watch out for bear traps are choke points and keep moving until you find the camp. Go into Angel Cave at the back to meet the Dead Horses.

If you have 7 points in Intelligence you can communicate a little bit better. Regardless, go to the back right to find the table with Joshua Graham. Go ahead and talk to him to get a few quest. We’ll need to do a little scavenging in order to help them out.

This will open up three quests. Note that you can also trade with him. Now’s a good time to trade in some guns you scavenged for pistols and submachine guns. He’s got a lot to offer and you’ve got a lot to trade.

Our time in Zion is not going to be peaceful. We’ll need to start helping the Dead Horses and Sorrows if they’re going to have any hope of winning the war with the White Legs. This means working on a scavenger hunt, fighting the White Legs and deciding whether to fight or flee.

6. Fallout: New Vegas Honest Hearts walkthrough

Honest hearts walkthrough.

This DLC is very straight forward. There are 5 achievements, all story related, and none missable as long as you make a save near the end to do the two different endings. Choose the quest Happy Trails Expedition in your quest log. Head to your loot stash location (for me Doc's house one of the metal boxes). Unload everything but your Armor, Stimpacks, Bobby Pins, and favorite weapon (a Tri-Beam Laser for me), as well as plenty of ammo for it. I went through around 500 MF Cells with my tri-beam during this DLC.

Get your inventory down to below 75lbs. There are a few speech checks you can make at the beginning of the DLC that allow you to increase your weight limit to 100, but you might as well unload everything so you don't have to bother with them. Fast travel to the Northern Passage (or the nearest location you've discovered) and enter the cave. Once inside you can either talk to Ricky for a check to get your limit increased to 100, or just talk to Jed if you have less than 75lbs. There is a perk check (Strong Back) or Survival check with Jed to increase the weight limit too, but like I said there's really no reason to take extra gear. You just need Stimpacks, one strong gun, ammo, armor, and a couple bobby pins.

Talking to Jed and choosing to start the expedition will pop the obligatory gimme achievement during the cutscene.

Arrived at Zion.

When We Remembered Zion

Once again there's no need for hand holding. If you somehow manage to get yourself lost, check the Fallout: NV wiki for a detailed walkthrough of this DLC. Just follow the markers and complete the quests, and along the way you will these:

Resupplied Daniel and the Sorrows.

Restore Our Fortunes

Scouted the Zion Valley for signs of the White Legs.

In a Foreign Land

For the two ending achievements, when you talk to Daniel after completing the quests The Grand Staircase, The Advance Scouts, The Treacherous Road, and River Monsters, save your game before you talk to him. Talking to him presents you with two options: evacuate the Sorrows from Zion, or deal with the Whitelegs. Make sure you back out of the conversation and save before making a choice if you didn't already.

For the Evacuation option, you're given 4 quests but all you have to do is complete the Flight from Zion one and the achievement will be yours.

Evacuated Zion.

May my Hand Forget its Skill

For the one where you deal with the Whitelegs, you'll travel to their camp and lay waste to their entire organization. At the end you're presented with a humane/ruthless choice when confronted with their leader, but it doesn't matter what option you pick. As soon as you pick one and he's dealt with, you will get this DLC's other ending achievement.

Crushed the White Legs.

O Daughter of Babylon

Congratulations on completing this rather short, moderately enjoyable DLC. The visuals certainly were nicer than some of the more drab-looking Mojave Wasteland areas.

Fallout: New Vegas—Honest Hearts review

Our verdict.

The story and decisions are bigger attractions than the limited-appeal loot and artificially toughened enemies.

PC Gamer's got your back Our experienced team dedicates many hours to every review, to really get to the heart of what matters most to you. Find out more about how we evaluate games and hardware.

Its heart may be in the right place, but Fallout: New Vegas—Honest Hearts' story puts the unexciting gameplay to shame.

Like the first chunk of FNV DLC, Dead Money, the plot and dialog of Honest Hearts are its strongest features. The two central characters encountered in this open-world tract of Utah desert, Daniel and Joshua, are both post-nuclear Mormons working to save a peace-loving tribe from hostiles, and their passionately argued disagreement as to how to approach the problem creates a real ethical dilemma as you pick a side. Joshua's history—and his link to the events in the Mojave—is great to read into as well.

For sinful wastelanders, it's unfortunate that both solutions have the best interests of the tribals at heart. There's no “evil” or Legion-friendly resolution I could find; I tried opening fire indiscriminately, as a minion of Caesar might, but the psychopathic option makes getting back to “civilization” tough, and doesn't win you the favor of the hostile tribe. I wasn't impressed by the scavenger-hunt quests either, and the two tribal companion characters foisted upon you (one at a time) are competent fighters, but not particularly interesting.

Grand canyons

Utah does have the distinction of looking nothing like FNV's Mojave, and the bright-orange canyons can be beautiful at dusk—though that nifty sun-glare effect has a nasty habit of shining right through cliff walls. Exploration is rewarded with loads of flora to use with potent new recipes, and a background story told through journal entries in the caves, but the rough terrain is sometimes frustrating to navigate.

Honest Hearts does include a healthy portion of tribal-themed loot (mostly attractive for melee and gun-focused characters) but none of the new few perks stand out as essential—a damage bonus to raiders, for example, isn't very helpful when most Mojave raiders are already pretty weak.

It'll be handy against these monstrously thick-skinned hostile tribals while you're here, though. Against Utah's even-more-gianter varieties of the already-enlarged mutant mantises, geckos, spore plants, and really evil cazador wasps (plus reintroduced yao guai bears from Fallout 3), every little bit helps. The yao guai AI is noticably glitchier than normal, though, and I walked away from a few maulings I shouldn't have thanks to the giant bears abruptly deciding to flee. Cowardly bears are the worst bug I encountered, but Bethesda has confirmed a potential game-breaker exists if you're at a certain point in ED-E's quest when you go to Utah.

I wouldn't consider Honest Hearts to be flyover country, but once I'd completed the five hours worth of quest content, nothing here would bring me back.

Arrival at Zion is a main quest in the Fallout: New Vegas add-on Honest Hearts .

Quick walkthrough [ ]

Detailed walkthrough [ ].

Shortly after the completion of Happy Trails Expedition and the Courier 's initial arrival in Zion, a group of White Legs will ambush the caravan, killing everyone but the Courier. There is no way to save the caravan members, as their deaths are scripted, and they will die even if all but one ambusher is killed, this last ambusher is unkillable until the last member of the caravan dies.

After crossing the bridge towards the rest of Zion, the Courier will be attacked by a White Legs tribal from a distance, standing upon a large rock. This ambush will be thwarted by Follows-Chalk , a scout from the Dead Horses tribe who can join the Courier as a companion. It is possible to let him join immediately, or he can be sent away. If he joins the Courier, he will provide a scripted commentary on the way to the Dead Horses camp .

HH yao guai scripted

The yao guai, roaring triumphantly after killing a gecko .

If Follows-Chalk joins the Courier, he will point out a hollow log that contains random minor loot. Not far down the path towards Dead Horses camp, a non-hostile giant yao guai will make a brief appearance in a scripted event. Further along the path, Follows-Chalk will note a cliff . Climbing to the top is the first opportunity to make use of the Well-Stacked Cairns perk. When getting close to the Dead Horses camp, Follows-Chalk will warn about traps set in the river to keep marauding White Legs at bay. Furthermore, if the Courier wanders too far off course, he will comment and remind the player that they are supposed to be heading towards his camp.

On arrival at the Dead Horses camp, the Courier is told to enter Angel cave and follow it until they find their leader, Joshua Graham . Engaging in conversation with Graham will complete the quest.

One can also opt to simply kill Follows-Chalk, which fails this quest and triggers Chaos in Zion . Triggering Chaos in Zion disallows participation in all other quests in the Honest Hearts add-on, and subsequently all of its quest-related trophies.

Quest stages [ ]

  • Follows-Chalk will kill the White Leg tribal lying in ambush across the bridge. Attempting to shoot the ambusher can lead to accidentally shooting Follows-Chalk instead, turning the Dead Horses tribe hostile, starting the Chaos in Zion quest and leading to the failure of the main quest line.
  • If the Wild Wasteland trait has been selected, a Dead Horse tribal called " Two-Bears-High-Fiving " will emerge from Angel cave , pump his fist in the air, and then quickly leave.
  • While talking to the Dead Horse Disciple of Canaan upon entering Angel Cave, an Intelligence check of 7 allows the Courier to demonstrate an understanding of the tribal dialect. The Sneering Imperialist perk works as well in this regard.
  • The duffle bags located near the ambush site are safe to store items in until the add-on is completed.

What's it like?

Testimonials from women in our community:

The HHJ experience flew completely off the charts in all categories for me. It far exceeded my expectations with the added bonus of debunking the notion that I’m unlikely to be comfortable around a group of women who I don’t know and may come from a different lifestyle and set of interests from me. I think that was the biggest surprise for me – the amount of meaningful connections with others that I was finding and witnessing.

We weren't wearing our professions, pasts, politics, lifestyles-to-impress, judgements, or limitations.  While we were curious about each other's stories and could ask about our work and families and homes, these things didn't define us. Our ideas, struggles, insights, compassion, growth, questions, humor, tears, hopes, exuberance, lightheartedness, wonder -- these took center stage and gave us a chance to catch glimpses of our own promise (who we are at our core) and how satisfying it is to discover the genuine beauty of other women and to share unfiltered companionship with them as we join in an unplugged experience together.

Powerful change happens when we silence the chatter within ourselves, stop looking for purpose, consider Being within and acknowledge our present selves without source, the world, social media…     I was grateful that this different setting and circumstances allowed me to see and enjoy individuals – as well as my interactions with them – in a new light. It was a good reminder that we are all continually growing, changing, transforming -- and to celebrate that.

Miracles of St. Matrona in Our Days

Stories from letters to the editors of pravoslavie.ru.

“ Of course she helped me, and not just once!”

The most important moments in my life:

—Through her holy prayers, I obtained my own apartment in my favorite region of Moscow (there was a real possibility of having to move to another end of the city).

—I found a very good job, my dream job (this was twelve years ago, but I am still working here!).

I went out during one of our lunch breaks for a stroll, and prayed to Matronyshka for guidance. And when I turned the corner I practically ran head-on into my future wife. As it turns out, she was just returning from Pokrov Convent [where the relics of St. Matrona are], where she was praying about the same thing that I was praying about.

Well in fact Blessed Matrona is my favorite and dearest saint!

Ekaternia Doroshenkova

“ Dry roses sprouted fresh growth.”

Hello, brothers and sisters. I would like to tell you the story of a miracle. My mother told me about it. In 2012, a particle of the relics of St. Matrona of Moscow was brought to us in Krasnoyarsk [Siberia]. People waited in line for several hours in order to venerate her relics. While standing in line my mother heard this story from a nurse who worked in the oncology ward. This nurse has venerated St. Matrona for a long time, prays to her, and has been to her reliquary in the Moscow Pokrov Convent several times.

At the convent they gave her some dry roses that were blessed on the relics of the saint, and she brought these to the dying woman. In the train (it takes four whole days to travel to us by train) a miracle happened: Those dry rose began to sprout fresh growth. And when she arrived home and gave the roses to the patient, she was healed.

Wondrous are Thy works, O Lord! Holy Blessed Matronushka, pray to Christ for us!

Ekaterina Doroshenkova

“ I immediately understood that this money was brought help you!”

I would like to share another little miracle of my own.

In 2010, after a long interval, I had the opportunity to finish the last year of the university. They were letting me finish only for money. With God’s help I finished the first semester. I borrowed money from my employer with a year’s postponement of repay. I wanted to take out a bank loan for the second and last semester. But two different banks denied me credit.

I had no one to count on for help, because my parents live very modestly.

In just a few days a colleague at work (with whom I was not even close friends, but she knew about my situation with the tuition), brought me the sufficient amount on loan.

As it turns out, her mother had the day before brought her this money, which she had saved up just for her. She didn’t need the money at the moment, and there was nothing to spend it on. She said, “I immediately understood that this money was brought to help you!”

This is how Blessed Matrona helped me through kind people. I received very obvious help through her prayers throughout that school year.

Blessed Matrona, pray to Christ God for us!

Tatiana Ketova

“ My pain went away in literally just a few minutes.”

Not long ago, Matronyshka helped me: My relative went on a pilgrimage to Matushka Matronushka and brought us blessed oil as a gift. I had baked pies in the oven for the children when they arrived and in the process burned my finger on the hot baking pan. A wide, white strip appeared immediately. In a panic, I didn’t know what to use on it—a raw potato, cold water, butter, oil all passed through my mind…

But I had read contrary opinions about all of these cures at one time. Then a precise thought came into my mind: “oil from Matronushka”. I applied the oil to the burn with prayer, stood a few minutes before the icons, prayed some more (I asked that at least to take the pain away, because I had to go to work that evening, and I worked in rubber gloves with water).

After these few minutes the pain had gone away completely. I finished baking the pies, went to work, and redid various things; the burned area quickly turned red, and the expected large boils did not appear. It all went away calmly and unnoticeably thanks to Matronushka.
