Demand for weight-loss drug Zepbound is so strong that Eli Lilly is warning patients may leave pharmacies empty-handed

travel short status

Eli Lilly & Co.  said that some patients may have trouble getting its new weight loss drug Zepbound as complaints of backorders and delays mount across the US.

“Due to the unprecedented demand for these medicines, some patients may experience difficulty when trying to fill their prescription at their pharmacy,” a Lilly spokesperson said.

The  US Food and Drug Administration  doesn’t currently consider the obesity shot in shortage and Lilly said it “continues to manufacture and ship all doses of Zepbound.”

Rite Aid Corp.  and Amazon Pharmacy said that the drug was in short supply, and multiple pharmacists across the US told Bloomberg News that some or all of the doses of the drug were on backorder.

On the website of Amazon Pharmacy, which has a  partnership  with Lilly, four doses of Zepbound are listed as unavailable. An Amazon spokesperson confirmed there is a “nationwide shortage” of some weight-loss medications, including Zepbound.

A Rite Aid spokesperson told Bloomberg News the demand for the obesity shot has “created some sporadic supply constraints.”

Other large pharmacy chains, including  CVS Health Corp. ,  Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. , and  Walmart Inc.  did not respond to requests for comment on their Zepbound supply.

Pharmacists say they’re having difficulty ordering the drugs from major wholesalers. On Mar. 25, wholesaler  McKesson Corp. ’s ordering system displayed to one pharmacist that all doses of Zepbound were on a supplier backorder, with the next release of drugs expected in early or mid-April, according to records reviewed by Bloomberg News. Full recovery of supply was “TBD,” the notice said.

Cardinal Health Inc. , another distributor, was also reporting a manufacturer backorder for some doses of Zepbound and limiting shipments to pharmacies, said Richard Glotzer, owner and pharmacist at Drug Mart of Millwood in Westchester County. A CVS pharmacy technician in Ohio, who asked not to be identified, provided the same information.

McKesson and Cardinal did not respond to requests for comment.

Trump's social media company loses billions in value as stock price swings wildly

By Aimee Picchi

Edited By Anne Marie Lee

Updated on: April 2, 2024 / 5:50 PM EDT / CBS News

Former President Donald Trump's fledgling media business is losing its sheen among investors a week after going public, with a sharp reversal in the company's stock price lopping $3.8 billion off its value.

Monday's plunge in Trump Media & Technology Group's shares, which debuted on the Nasdaq Composite Index on March 25 under the ticker "DJT" (after the former president's initials), comes as it disclosed mounting losses in a  regulatory filing . The company also noted that its accountant had issued a warning that its losses "raise substantial doubt about its ability to continue as a going concern."

Shares of Trump Media & Technology Group, whose primary asset is the Truth Social platform, tumbled 21% on Monday, closing at $48.66, or below its opening price last Monday of $49.90 per share. It also represents a 39% plunge from the stock's high of $79.38 on March 26.

But the stock rallied on Tuesday, rising 6% to $51.60. Even with the gain, however, the stock has lost $3.8 billion from its peak last week.

The stock also remains higher than before a deal that took Trump's media company public last week. The shares had previously traded under the name Digital World Acquisition Corp., a shell company designed to take Truth Social public. Even after Monday's dip, the stock has surged 178% this year.

Trump, who owns 57% of the newly public company, has lost $2.2 billion — at least on paper — because of the stock slide. His stake is now worth $4.1 billion, down from $6.3 billion at the stock's peak last week.

Worth more than Harley-Davidson

To be sure, Trump Media continues to maintain a heady market capitalization for a business that's in the red and that booked just $4.1 million in revenue last year. Even after Monday's stock plunge, the business is worth $6.7 billion, making it more valuable than companies like Bausch & Lomb, Alcoa Corp. or Harley-Davidson, all of which have annual revenue in the billions.

Trump Media's soaring valuation has prompted comparisons with so-called "meme" stocks like GameStop, which typically attract individual investors based on social media buzz, rather than the tried-and-true yardsticks relied on by institutional investors, such as profitability and revenue growth.

Yet Truth Social has positioned itself as an alternative to more established tech giants such as Meta's Facebook, which also endured losses in its early years.

"GameStop was the meme stock of a lifetime, but Trump Media has put it to shame," Michael Pachter, an analyst at Wedbush Securities, told the Associated Press last week.

Despite the attention around Trump Media's debut on the public market, it's not giving a much of a boost to Truth Social, according to Similarweb. The web analytics firm found that traffic from daily active users of the platform fell 23% last week.

"Even during the peak of excitement over the IPO (plus the release of a Trump-branded Bible), usage was less than 1% higher than the previous week," Similarweb said in a new report.

Trump Media CEO Devin Nunes: No debt

In a statement  on Tuesday, Trump Media & Technology Group CEO Devin Nunes said Truth Social "has no debt and over $200 million in the bank, opening numerous possibilities for expanding and enhancing our platform."

But details about Trump Media's finances show that the company's revenue is far lower than other social media platforms. On Monday, the company said it booked $4.1 million in revenue last year, compared with $1.5 million in the year-earlier period.

That means Trump Media had about $750,000 in revenue in the fourth quarter, as the company had previously disclosed sales of $3.38 million for the first nine months of 2023. By comparison, Reddit, another money-losing tech company that recently went public, booked $804 million in revenue last year.

Trump Media & Technology Group also posted a loss of $58 million in 2023, compared with a profit of $50 million in the prior year.

Additionally, it noted that its accountant flagged that the company's losses raise doubts about its ability to continue operating. Such a warning, however, reflects the company's current situation; the company could grow its user base, revenue and reverse its losses, putting it on a more stable path.

Trump's stake locked up

Trump stands to make billions from his majority stake in Truth Social's parent company, a windfall that comes at an opportune time for the former president given mounting financial pressures .

Even so, Trump is unable to access the stock, at least for now. That's because Trump and other company executives are subject to a so-called "lock-up" provision that bars them from selling the stock for at least six months. Such provisions are common in IPOs as a way to keep insiders from dumping shares immediately after a company goes public.

"Trump cannot sell his stock in the company for six months, making it difficult to translate Truth Social's value into liquid cash that can be spent on the campaign," Europa Group analysts said in a report. "That outlook could change over the coming months, particularly if Trump obtains the waiver or can find a lender willing to accept shares in Trump Media as collateral."

Many of the investors in DJT appear to be small investors who want to show their support for the former president by buying shares in the company. On Truth Social, some of these shareholders posted rebuttals about the stock decline, blaming short sellers, or people who make bets that a stock will decline.

Others predicted that Trump Media's shares will soon rebound, while others blamed the stock decline on the former president's detractors. "They don't like President @realDonaldTrump and his policies, especially his creation, Truth Social, so they are trying to destroy his company, DJT," one supporter on a DJT group on Truth Social wrote.

How temporary protected status has expanded under the biden administration.

Since President Joe Biden took office in January 2021, his administration has greatly expanded the number of immigrants who are eligible for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) – a designation that gives them time-limited permission to live and work in the United States and avoid potential deportation.

The federal government offers TPS to qualifying immigrants who live in the U.S. and come from selected nations that are deemed unsafe to return to because of war, natural disasters or other crises.

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to determine the number of immigrants in the U.S. who are eligible for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). The federal government, as directed by the president, determines the countries whose immigrants living in the U.S. would be eligible for TPS. TPS is granted to nationals of designated countries and to those with no nationality, but who last habitually lived in a designated country (immigrants). To apply, immigrants must have continuously lived in the U.S. at or before a date specified by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

For this analysis, we collected information about the TPS program published on the DHS website; Federal Register announcements about TPS benefits ; and information from the Congressional Research Service .

In this analysis, TPS beneficiary numbers for most countries are taken from DHS statistics provided to the Congressional Research Service, which exclude recipients who also have lawful permanent resident status or U.S. citizenship. Some may have left the U.S. or died. For immigrants eligible for TPS from the redesignations of Cameroon, Myanmar, Syria and Venezuela, estimates of the number of people eligible were included in the most recent Federal Register notices regarding those countries’ TPS designations.

A table showing that over 1 million immigrants in the U.S. are either eligible for or receiving Temporary Protected Status. About 240,000 immigrants from Venezuela are currently receiving TPS.

Nearly 1.2 million of the roughly 21.6 million noncitizen immigrants living in the U.S. are either receiving or eligible for TPS. These immigrants come from 16 countries : Afghanistan, Cameroon, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Haiti, Honduras, Myanmar, Nepal, Nicaragua, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, Venezuela and Yemen.

Federal immigration officials may grant TPS for up to 18 months based on conditions in immigrants’ home countries, and they may repeatedly extend this eligibility if dangerous conditions in those countries persist.

The Biden administration cited dangerous conditions in Cameroon, Myanmar, Syria and Venezuela when it recently expanded TPS protections to immigrants from those countries. The Federal Register provides detailed information about each of these countries’ designations .

A table showing that an estimated 480,000 U.S. immigrants from Venezuela, Cameroon and Syria are newly eligible for Temporary Protected Status. 472,000 of these immigrants come from Venezuela.

The recent TPS expansions continue the Biden administration’s efforts to broaden the program .

Since 2021, the Department of Homeland Security – which oversees the program – has added Afghanistan, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Myanmar, Ukraine and Venezuela to the list of countries whose immigrants may qualify for TPS. It also extended the terms of eligibility for immigrants from most countries that were already covered by TPS.

The Biden administration’s expansions stand in contrast to the Trump administration’s efforts to end TPS for nearly all beneficiaries. On his first day as president, Biden asked Congress to pass legislation that would allow TPS recipients who meet certain conditions to apply immediately for green cards that would let them become lawful permanent residents. Green card holders may be granted U.S. citizenship if they pass additional background checks and meet the usual naturalization conditions of knowledge of English and U.S. civics.

TPS recipients are not currently eligible for permanent residency or U.S. citizenship unless they pursue those statuses through other immigration processes.

Some TPS recipients have lived in the U.S. for decades

Immigrants with TPS live in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories, according to the Congressional Research Service . The largest numbers live in Florida, Texas, California and New York – all of them states with large immigrant populations.

Some current TPS beneficiaries have lived in the U.S. for two decades or more. For example, those from Honduras and Nicaragua have been eligible because of damage from Hurricane Mitch in 1998, provided they have been living in the U.S. since Dec. 30 of that year. And current protections for immigrants from El Salvador apply to those who have lived in the U.S. since Feb. 13, 2001, following a series of earthquakes that killed more than a thousand people and inflicted widespread damage there.

Deferred Enforced Departure also offers protection from deportation

Another form of temporary relief from deportation, called Deferred Enforced Departure (DED), is granted at the president’s discretion, rather than as a result of an administrative process in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. It usually follows catastrophes in immigrants’ home countries similar to those that have triggered TPS. Currently, certain immigrants from Liberia, Hong Kong and the Palestinian territories are eligible for this benefit and are also allowed to apply for authorization to work. Liberian immigrants with DED have  relief until June 30, 2024 , and those from Hong Kong until Feb. 5, 2025 . The president recently enacted DED for immigrants from the Palestinian territories for 18 months starting Feb. 14, 2024.

To be granted TPS, applicants must meet filing deadlines, pay a fee, and prove they have lived in the U.S. continuously since the events that triggered relief from deportation. They must also meet criminal record requirements . For example, they must show that they have not been convicted of any felony or two or more misdemeanors while in the U.S.; persecuted others; or engaged in terrorism.

Once the Department of Homeland Security determines that a nation’s immigrants are eligible for TPS, those immigrants can apply for deportation relief if they entered the U.S. without authorization or entered on a temporary visa that has since expired. Those with a valid temporary visa or another non-immigrant status, such as foreign students, are also eligible to apply.

Federal officials are required to announce 60 days before any TPS designation expires whether it will be extended. Without a decision, it automatically extends for another six months.

Congress and President George H.W. Bush authorized the TPS program in the 1990 immigration law , granting the White House executive power to designate and extend the status to immigrants in the U.S. based on certain criteria.

5 Hotel Pools Perfect for Swimmers

Many hotel pools are built with children and sun-seekers in mind: too short, too warm and too crowded. These, in cities across the U.S., let you get your laps in, in style.

A pool with still clear water is shown, with lounge chairs along the sides, with stone and wood decor and windows to the outside.

By Julie Halpert

Michele Heisler, 61, is an avid swimmer, putting in 45 minutes three times a week in a local 25-yard-long pool. But swimming while traveling can be challenging. “Most hotel pools are too tiny or too crowded,” she said.

Then, while planning a trip to Chicago, Ms. Heisler, from Ann Arbor, Mich., came across a photo of the hotel pool of her dreams. In the Intercontinental Hotel, the 25-yard-long pool, built in 1929, is one of the oldest in Chicago and is surrounded by Greek-inspired marble decoration. “You feel like you’re swimming in an ancient Greek temple. It’s a magical experience,” said Ms. Heisler, who has stayed at the Intercontinental four times in the last 10 years because of the pool.

Even at a resort, swimming laps often means having to negotiate odd, and often short, lengths while keeping an eye out for cannonballing children in water that can feel like a hot tub. Finding a hotel pool that’s large enough for lap swimming in a big city is even more daunting. But they exist. Here are six hotel pools that are at least 25 yards long and provide ample space for lap swimming, as well as first-class ambience; some are open to visitors who are not spending the night. Most are open all day, but early morning hours will provide the best lap swim experience, hotel representatives say.

InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile

The setting: The south tower of the InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile hotel was originally a private athletic club, complete with this indoor pool, which was host to the famous Olympic swimmer and actor Johnny Weissmuller, who broke records at the 1924 and 1928 Olympics.

The pool, on the hotel’s 14th floor, is “an architectural marvel complete with spectator seating and turrets” decorated with Spanish Majolica tiles, said Christopher Cawley, the hotel’s general manager. It has four swimming lanes. Lounge chairs surround the pool, and a newly renovated, multilevel fitness center is nearby.

Hours: Weekdays 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.; weekends 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. There are no times set aside especially for lap swimming.

Pool temperature: 84 degrees

Public access: Non-guests can purchase a resort pass online to use the pool and fitness facilities through Resort Pass , a platform that partners with hotels across the United States to offer day passes to access exclusive amenities. Prices vary depending on season, currently an adult day pass is $40.

Four Seasons Hotel New York Downtown

The setting: When the Four Seasons Hotel New York Downtown opened in 2016, it included this 25-yard-long indoor pool designed, like the rest of the hotel’s interiors, by the interior design firm Yabu Pushelberg , originally from Canada.

The pool area features stone-clad columns, wood screens and a custom scratched-plaster finish on the walls to add to the soothing tranquillity of the space. “If you close your eyes, you feel like you are transported to the French Riviera,” said Thomas Carreras, the hotel’s general manager. He calls it a “sanctuary.” There is a mix of seating, from lounge chairs with plush white towels to comfortable love seats with oversize pillows. The pool is on the hotel’s third floor, along with the fitness facility and the spa. There is one designated lap lane.

Hours: 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Pool temperature: 83 to 85 degrees

Public access: The pool is open to hotel guests and to members of Club 27, the hotel’s private wellness club.

The setting: The W Miami is within the IconBrickell complex and condominium development in Miami’s Brickell neighborhood, which was built in 2008; the W opened in 2016. Hotel guests and building residents have use of the complex’s outdoor pools, which include a reflection pool, a hot tub and a lap pool. The lap pool, which overlooks Biscayne Bay and has an infinity edge, is 205 feet long, 40 feet longer than an Olympic-size pool, making it somewhat mind-bending for swimmers used to more standardized lengths.

The pools’ design was inspired by the French designer Phillip Starck whose firm designed the common areas and residences of the complex. It is intended to be a “whimsical urban-chic version of the Champs-Élysées,” with the pool working as the avenue instead of concrete, said Arianna Calcaterra, the hotel’s director of marketing.

Gail Gensler, 63, who lives in a condominium apartment in the complex, swims there twice a week as soon as the pool opens, often at sunrise. “It’s very gorgeous when you’re watching the sun rise over the bay and you’re getting your workout in,” she said.

The pool is on a two-acre, resort-style pool deck. There are also lounge pools and cabanas, as well as a poolside restaurant serving food and beverages.

Hours: Guests can go as early as dawn to swim laps. Pool service, which includes towels and lifeguards, is offered from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Food service is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Pool temperature: 78 to 82 degrees in the spring and fall and 76 to 78 degrees in the winter.

Guest access: The pool is managed by IconBrickell, the developer of the complex. Hotel guests have access along with residents of the complex.

Four Seasons Hotel New Orleans

The setting: Built in 2021, the 75-foot-long outdoor pool at the Four Seasons Hotel New Orleans overlooks the Mississippi River, and the mosaic-lined pool has a slight crescent bend to mirror the curve of the river.

The pool, on the hotel’s fifth floor, is also a consistent 3 feet 8 inches deep along its whole length and features underwater lighting and music. There are two designated lap lanes. It’s surrounded by chaise longues, a separate hot tub and four cabanas that are available for daily rental. A fitness center and spa are on the same floor. There’s also a poolside bar serving cocktails and food.

Hours: 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Pool temperature: 84 degrees.

Guest access: The pool is used by both hotel guests and residents of the property.

Conrad Nashville

The setting: Built in June 2022 when the Conrad Nashville opened, this outdoor pool is 81 feet long and is on the hotel’s roof deck on the third floor.

As you swim, you can take in views of Nashville, including Vanderbilt University, said Eumi Koh, the hotel’s general manager. Food and beverages are available in the pool area from May to October, but the pool is open year round. There are roughly 30 lounge chairs, all outfitted with umbrellas, along with day beds and dining tables and chairs. Three cabanas can be reserved. There are no lap lanes with ropes.

Hours: Sunrise to sunset. Food and beverage service is available Monday through Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Pool temperature: 85 to 89 degrees

Guest access: The pool is for hotel guests only.

Cincinnati Marriott at RiverCenter

The setting: The 75-foot-long indoor pool, located on the ground floor of the Cincinnati Marriott at RiverCenter, which is across the Ohio River from downtown Cincinnati, was renovated in 2020. Windows the length of the pool provide natural lighting, so “you don’t feel like you’re swimming in a cave,” said Shawnna Dunaway, the hotel’s director of sales and marketing. “It’s very open and light.”

She said the pool is particularly appealing to the hotel’s many corporate guests, who “can have that full workout of a full-length pool.” There are also lounge chairs surrounding the pool and a fitness center nearby. There are no lane dividers.

Guest access: Only hotel guests can use the pool.

Thunder Fall Short of 76ers in Tension-Filled Game

Although it had the lead for most of the contest, Oklahoma City Thunder fell short after a late-game comeback from the Philadelphia 76ers.

  • Author: Chase Gemes

In this story:

The odds were certainly stacked against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Missing arguably its two best players — in the form of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams — the Thunder were at a disadvantage against a Philadelphia 76ers team getting back its MVP candidate in Joel Embiid. Due to the circumstances and a late-game collapse it felt just short, 109-105.

In the largest offensive role he's had to play the entire season, Chet Holmgren held up his end with a 22 point, seven rebound and two block performance on 7-of-14 shooting. He defended a returning Embiid considerably well, while stepping up in an important scoring role.

The absences Oklahoma City had to endure made other players step up with an increased offensive roles alongside Holmgren, including Aaron Wiggins' 15 and Isaiah Joe's 14 points. Although Philadelphia isn't currently at the top of the Eastern Conference standings, it's a quality team that required plenty of attention.

Holmgren started the Thunder's offensive flurry with a 3-pointer from the top of the key along with a mid-range jumper, a good start for a game where he would need to be it's main offensive weapon. Embiid and the Sixers jumped right back though, with Oklahoma City falling behind 22-25.

The start of the second quarter remained much of the same back and forth play, but the Thunder started to build a lead in the latter half. In the final two minutes it went on an 11-5 run, gaining a 54-44 lead at the end of the first half. Aaron Wiggins' 10 points led the way, stepping up in his newfound starting role.

Philadelphia didn't run away from the fight once the second half began, scoring 29 points in the third quarter and making it a seven-point game. The likes of Holmgren and Dort were still effective, however, and Oklahoma City held Embiid admirably well.

The Thunder kept up a similar pace once the fourth quarter opened up, but the Sixers had an even higher pace. It went on an 9-3 run in the final few minutes of the game to gain a 104-103 lead, completely flipping the game and making for a tension-filled end to the contest.

Dort put Oklahoma City back up after a put-back attempt off a missed Joe 3-point attempt, but Embiid got back to the free-throw line on two occasions put his team up by three points. Joe and Jaylin Williams had attempts down the stretch to tie the game, but missed the mark on both all of their attempts, resulting in a loss.

The Thunder will leave Philadelphia to face the Boston Celtics (59-16) on Wednesday, April 3 at 6:30 p.m. CT in another Eastern Conference matchup.

Cruise ship was right to ditch the late passengers in africa, travel writer says.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Eight people have accused Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) of abandoning them on a tiny island in Africa after a private tour ran late and the group missed the embarkation cut-off time.

Four of the group are elderly and another is pregnant, and though the ship was still at anchor, they were denied boarding.

The ship, the Norwegian Dawn, set sail without them – and it was right to do so.

Once, I was late to check in for a flight. I jumped out of the taxi, sprinted to the counter (which is no mean feat when you’re hauling luggage) and arrived at the desk sweating bullets, prepared to get on my knees and grovel if it meant I’d be allowed through.

I began to tell my sob story to the lady at the desk, heart hammering and lungs gasping for air, when she politely interrupted and shook her head.

Norwegian CRUISELINE

In the nicest way possible, she said this: “Stiff bickies.” (OK yes, I’ve paraphrased.)

Sure, the plane was still at the airport, no more than a few hundred meters from where I was standing. However, the luggage had already been loaded, the manifest had already been finalized, and the other passengers were already boarding.

There was no way they were going to let me board, nor should they have.

You see, I had been on a whale-watching tour about two-and-a-half hours south of the airport – hey, it was my last day, I wanted to make it count.

I planned it to perfection, except for one detail: we spotted a playful pod right at the very end, so the captain offered to give us some bonus time to enjoy the view.

With one eye on the magnificent mammals, and another on my watch, I held on to a flicker of hope that I might make it.

I jumped on the bus back to town, flagged down a cab, and asked the driver to hurry. I launched out of the car like a 100m sprinter launches out of starting blocks and ran into the terminal.

Alas, my proverbial ship had sailed.

Was it a bummer? Absolutely. But imagine delaying the other 158-or-so passengers scheduled to depart on the Boeing 737, asking the crew to extend their shifts, or holding the plane and disrupting airport traffic … all so little old me could drop off my bags, scurry through security, and find my gate.

Imagine the awkwardness if I stepped onto that plane. What do you say? “Sorry guys, my bad, lol.”

That doesn’t even scratch the surface of a cruise ship’s operations. Norwegian Dawn can accommodate 3,372 people – 2,340 passengers and 1,032 crew – and this group of eight expected it to wait?

A ship’s departure time isn’t exactly a mystery.

I sailed on Norwegian Dawn in February and the departure time was published in NCL’s Freestyle Daily newsletter the night before and announced over the loudspeaker multiple times in the morning.

It was also posted on signs at the doors where guests disembark.

The golden rule is clear: Make sure you’re back on time, or the ship may sail without you.

So what do you do if you’re left behind? Generally there are two options: either catch up with the ship at a later port or head home.

If you’re lucky, you’ll have brought your essentials with you – your passport, phone, credit card, and medication – because all of your belongings will stay on board until the end.

Please don’t get me wrong, of course I’m sympathetic to the distress of those who were left in a foreign country without the safety of the ship.

It would be scary and stressful to figure out next steps, especially for the members of the group with higher needs, and disappointing to miss out on their holidays.

However, the unfortunate reality is that ships can’t always wait.

Private tours are a whole separate issue, because while the ship will wait for official tours – those which have been organized by the cruise ship operator – to return, all bets are off for passengers taking their shore excursions into their own hands.

Unofficial tours can be slightly cheaper than those on the ship’s itinerary, with slightly more availability, so they can be attractive. However, while operators will do their best to stick to scheduled times, all bets are off once you board that bus and leave the port.

Think of it like booking multiple legs of a trip with different airlines. They’re not in the same network, they don’t owe each other anything, and they can’t guarantee that you’ll make your connection. Say the bus breaks down. Maybe someone wanders off and takes ages to find.

Perhaps the group lingers over a delicious lunch. Someone might need to stop at an ATM or a loo. You could get stuck in traffic. Or maybe your tour will be like mine and you’ll see something incredible that simply makes you want to pause.

And so, eight passengers were left in São Tomé and Príncipe , Africa’s second-smallest country.

“While this is a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time,” NCL said in a statement, adding that it is communicating with the guests about their next steps. It’s harsh but fair, especially since the other 3,364 (or so) people on board got it right.

Kirrily Schwarz recently sailed on Norwegian Dawn as a guest of Norwegian Cruise Line.

Chapter 3 - Terms and Conditions of J Exchange Visitor Status

A. eligibility for admission.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection may admit the exchange visitor and any accompanying dependent family members into the United States in J-1 and J-2 classifications [1] if each applicant:

Presents a valid passport;

Valid J-1 or J-2 visa; and

Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status ( Form DS-2019 ), issued in the exchange visitor’s (or accompanying dependent family member’s) name by a program approved by the U.S. Department of State (DOS) for participation by J-1 exchange visitors. [2]

B. Admission and Grace Periods

DOS may issue J-1 and J-2 visas to qualified applicants at any time that the Form DS-2019 is valid. However, the exchange visitor may not enter the United States more than 30 days before the program start date on the Form DS-2019 and may only remain in the United States for 30 days after completing the program for the purpose of travel. [3]

C. Length of Programs and Duration of Status

J-1 exchange visitors are initially admitted for duration of status. Duration of status is defined as completion of the J-1 program plus 30 days. [4] J-1 exchange visitors and their dependent family members are admitted for duration of status, but a Responsible Officer (RO) has the discretion to extend a participant's program to its maximum regulatory duration (the limit imposed by the regulations specific to a program category or to a program sponsor's designation).

The total length of time that a J-1 exchange visitor is permitted to stay in the United States depends on the program. The durational limits for each of the J-1 programs are set forth below.

D. Reporting Requirements

A J-1 exchange visitor must inform USCIS and exchange visitor program RO of any legal name changes or change of address within 10 days of the change in a manner prescribed by the program sponsor. [6]

A J-1 exchange visitor enrolled in a Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) program satisfies the requirement of notifying USCIS by providing a notice of a change of address within 10 days to the RO, who in turn is required to enter the information in SEVIS within 21 days of notification by the exchange visitor. [7]

J-1 foreign medical graduates granted a waiver of the 2-year foreign residence requirement under the Conrad 30 program [8] must notify USCIS of any material change in the terms and conditions of the H-1B employment during the 3-year period following waiver approval. [9]

E. Employment Authorization

Several J-1 exchange visitor programs involve a work component. Exchange visitors participating in those programs are authorized to work incident to status. [10]

F. Foreign Residence Requirement

Certain J-1 exchange visitors are subject to a 2-year foreign residence requirement. [11] After leaving the United States, J-1 exchange visitors subject to the requirement must reside and be physically present in their country of nationality or last legal residence abroad for an aggregate of at least 2 years before they are eligible to apply for an immigrant visa, adjustment of status, or a nonimmigrant H, L, or K visa. [12] Such country is the country of nationality or legal permanent residence listed on the Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor Status (Form DS-2019), and is referred to herein as the “Home Country.”

These exchange visitors are further prohibited from changing status from J nonimmigrant status to another nonimmigrant status, other than A, G, T, or U, or H-1B for physicians receiving waivers on the basis of a 3-year waiver position. [13]

Exchange visitors participating in the following programs are subject to the foreign residence requirement: [14]

Programs facilitated by the DOS designated sponsor, Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), for medical trainees. (ECFMG sponsored medical researchers are generally not subject to the requirement as medical trainees, but may be subject to the requirement on another basis);

Programs in which the exchange visitor has received any type of government funding or support from the exchange visitor’s home country or country of last legal permanent residence, the U.S. Government, or an international organization, as indicated on the Form DS-2019 . (Government-sponsored programs beginning with G in the program number on Form DS-2019 are usually government-funded where the exchange visitor received financial support from the sponsor);

Programs in which the exchange visitor’s field of endeavor appears on the DOS Exchange Visitor Skills List (list of fields of specialized knowledge or skills in which the services of exchange visitor participants are critically needed) for the exchange visitor’s home country or country of last legal permanent residence; [15] and

Programs whose purpose is graduate medical training, typically a residency or fellowship.

Determining if the Foreign Residence Requirement Has Been Met

USCIS determines whether the exchange visitor has met the 2-year foreign residence requirement within the context of a subsequent application or petition. USCIS applies the preponderance of the evidence standard when it makes this determination.

Benefit requestors may submit any relevant evidence showing their physical presence in the Home Country. For example, benefit requestors may submit a chart of days spent in the Home Country. Benefit requestors may also submit supporting evidence such as passport stamps, travel receipts, employment records, school transcripts, leases, or affidavits.

Any day where a fraction of a day is spent in the Home Country counts toward satisfaction of the requirement. For example, a travel day, where a fraction of the day is spent in the country of last permanent residence, counts as a day towards satisfying the requirement.

In certain cases, conditions in the applicant’s Home Country, such as war or civil unrest, may make compliance with the 2-year residence requirement effectively impossible. Additionally, some countries have periodically imposed travel bans that have made traveling to the Home Country effectively impossible. In other cases, the applicant’s Home Country is now part of another country due to shifting borders or other political changes. USCIS considers these circumstances, on a case-by-case basis, in consultation with the Department of State.

What is Good Friday? What the holy day means for Christians around the world

travel short status

Christians around the world observe Good Friday two days before Easter, but what is it, and why do they commemorate the holy day?

The holiday is part of Holy Week, which leads up to Easter Sunday. Palm Sunday kicks off the series of Christian holy days that commemorate the Crucifixion and celebrate Jesus Christ's resurrection.

"Good Friday has been, for centuries now, the heart of the Christian message because it is through the death of Jesus Christ that Christians believe that we have been forgiven of our sins," Daniel Alvarez, an associate teaching professor of religious studies at Florida International University, told USA TODAY.

What is Holy Saturday? What the day before Easter means for Christians around the world

When is Good Friday?

Good Friday is always the Friday before Easter. It's the second-to-last day of Holy Week.

In 2024, Good Friday will fall on March 29.

What is Good Friday?

Good Friday is the day Christ was sacrificed on the cross. According to Britannica , it is a day for "sorrow, penance, and fasting."

"Good Friday is part of something else," Gabriel Radle, an assistant professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame, previously told USA TODAY. "It's its own thing, but it's also part of something bigger."

Are Good Friday and Passover related?

Alvarez says that Good Friday is directly related to the Jewish holiday, Passover.

Passover , or Pesach, is a major Jewish holiday that celebrates the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt.

"The whole Christian idea of atoning for sin, that Jesus is our atonement, is strictly derived from the Jewish Passover tradition," said Alvarez.

How is that possible?

According to the professor, Passover celebrates the day the "Angel of Death" passed over the homes of Israelites who were enslaved by the Egyptians. He said that the Bible states when the exodus happened, families were told to paint their doors with lamb's blood so that God would spare the lives of their firstborn sons.

Alvarez says this is why Christians call Jesus the "lamb of God." He adds that the symbolism of the "blood of the lamb" ties the two stories together and is why Christians believe God sacrificed his firstborn son. Because, through his blood, humanity is protected from the "wrath of a righteous God that cannot tolerate sin."

He adds that the stories of the exodus and the Crucifixion not only further tie the stories together but also emphasize just how powerful the sacrifice of the firstborn and the shedding of blood are in religion.

"Jesus is the firstborn, so the whole idea of the death of the firstborn is crucial," said Alvarez.

He adds that the sacrifice of the firstborn, specifically a firstborn son, comes from an ancient and "primitive" idea that the sacrifice unleashes "tremendous power that is able to fend off any kind of force, including the wrath of God."

Why Is Good Friday so somber?

Alavarez says people might think this holiday is more depressing or sad than others because of how Catholics commemorate the Crucifixion.

"I think [it's] to a level that some people might think is morbid," said Alvarez.

He said Catholics not only meditate on Jesus' death, but primarily focus on the suffering he faced in the events that led up to his Crucifixion. That's what makes it such a mournful day for people.

But, the professor says that Jesus' suffering in crucial to Christianity as a whole.

"The suffering of Christ is central to the four Gospels," said Alvarez. "Everything else is incidental."

According to the professor, statues that use blood to emphasize the way Jesus and Catholic saints suffered is very common in Spanish and Hispanic Countries, but not as prevalent in American churches.

Do you fast on Good Friday?

Father Dustin Dought, the executive director of the Secretariat of Divine Worship of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, previously told USA TODAY that Good Friday and Ash Wednesday are the two days in the year that Roman Catholics are obliged to fast.

"This practice is a way of emptying ourselves so that we can be filled with God," said Dought.

What do you eat on Good Friday?

Many Catholics do not eat meat on any Friday during Lent. Anything with flesh is off-limits. Dought says this practice is to honor the way Jesus sacrificed his flesh on Good Friday.

Meat that is off limits includes:

Instead, many Catholics will eat fish. According to the Marine Stewardship Council , this is allowed because fish is considered to be a different type of flesh.

American Airlines buy-up status offers: What we've seen and how to check yours

Katie Genter

Editor's Note

If you haven't reached your desired American Airlines AAdvantage elite status yet, the qualification deadline of Feb. 29 is rapidly approaching. Although you still have the rest of February to earn Loyalty Points toward your desired status, American AAdvantage is already sending out opportunities to use miles or cash to buy elite status valid through March 31, 2025.

I received an email from the American Airlines AAdvantage program Feb. 1 titled "Kathryn, secure your AAdvantage® status for 2024" with a link to check my offer.

travel short status

Even if you didn't get an email, you could go to the AAdvantage status offer landing page and log in to see whether you have an offer (and if so, the details of your offer).

According to the terms and conditions , the status buy-up offers for targeted members are "based upon the expiration of their AAdvantage® status membership level on March 31, 2024 and/or their 2023 status qualification process". As such, even if you find your current offer compelling, I recommend waiting until you're done earning Loyalty Points for this qualification period before purchasing an AAdvantage buy-up status offer.

Now, let's look at what you should know about these offers and some of the offers TPG staffers have seen in their accounts.

AAdvantage buy-up status offers

I've held Executive Platinum status with American AAdvantage since 2016. But, so far this qualification period, I've earned 111,175 Loyalty Points, which is 13,825 Loyalty Points short of what I'll need for Platinum Pro. As a result, I received a Platinum Pro offer to pay $2,059 or 206,000 miles to secure the status through March 31, 2025.

travel short status

I have flights booked for travel before the end of February that will get me the Loyalty Points I need for Platinum Pro. As such, I expect I'll get a new offer for Executive Platinum status once this travel is posted to my account. But I expect the new offer will be for far more money or miles than I'd be willing to pay, especially since I've decided to only strive for Platinum Pro status going forward.

TPG cruise team lead Gene Sloan currently has Platinum Pro status and has accrued 189,001 Loyalty Points during this qualification period. He was given an offer of $1,025 or 102,500 miles for Executive Platinum status. However, he said he's planning to focus his attention on United Airlines MileagePlus this year, where he's currently a top-tier Premier 1K elite member , so he's likely going to skip the offer.

Related: I'm an American Airlines AAdvantage Executive Platinum — here are 5 reasons why I'm thrilled with the loyalty program's latest changes

TPG senior hotels reporter Tanner Saunders currently holds Platinum status and has earned 49,830 Loyalty Points this qualification period (25,170 Loyalty Points short of what he'd need to keep Platinum status). He said he received an offer to keep Platinum status for $1,449 or 145,000 miles. However, when I asked him about his offer, he said, "I've found that I've gotten a great number of upgrades on the routes I fly frequently, but it's not anything more than I've gotten in the past with just Gold." So, it seems Tanner will not take American up on its offer.

travel short status

TPG editor Kristy Tolley also got an offer for Platinum status. She currently has Gold status and has earned 48,692 Loyalty Points so far this qualification period (and is 26,308 Loyalty Points short of earning Platinum status). Her Platinum status offer is for $1,715 or 171,500 miles.

travel short status

TPG senior credit cards editor Matt Moffitt currently holds no status with American AAdvantage but has the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® (see rates and fees ). Matt says he's earned 18,848 Loyalty Points this qualification period, meaning he is 21,152 Loyalty Points away from AAdvantage Gold status. He received an offer of $1,579 or 158,000 miles for AAdvantage Gold status, but when I asked him whether he'd consider the offer, he told me, "I already get Admirals Club access, a free checked bag, priority check-in and priority boarding (Group 4) with my Citi/AA Exec World card, so this offer is not worth it to me."

travel short status

TPG travel news reporter Tarah Chieffi doesn't hold any AAdvantage status and has earned 5,320 Loyalty Points this qualification period, putting her 34,680 Loyalty Points away from Gold status. She received an offer for Gold status by paying $1,665 or redeeming 166,500 miles.

Finally, some AAdvantage members may not have an offer. For example, TPG newsletter editor Becky Blaine didn't see an offer but noted she'd requalified for Platinum two weeks ago.

Is an AAdvantage buy-up status offer worth it?

In most cases, it won't make sense to accept your AAdvantage buy-up status offer even if you want the perks of the status. For example, consider my offer for $2,059 or 206,000 miles to secure Platinum Pro. I've earned 111,175 Loyalty Points this qualification period and need 13,825 more to qualify organically for Platinum Pro status.

I have Executive Platinum status currently, so I earn 11 Loyalty Points per qualifying dollar spent on American, British Airways and Iberia. As such, I could book and fly on flights costing at least $1,257 for base fares and carrier-imposed fees before the end of February to earn the required Loyalty Points. In doing so, I'd get to go on one or more trips and earn at least 13,825 miles on these flights, worth about $214 based on TPG's valuations .

If I couldn't travel more by the end of February, earning Loyalty Points through the AAdvantage eShopping portal is also relatively easy. Let's assume I find a merchant offering 10 base miles per dollar spent. In this case, I could earn the 13,825 Loyalty Points I need with a qualifying purchase of $1,383. I'd get products I need from the merchant, and I could earn even more base miles and Loyalty Points if I used an AAdvantage credit card or happened to find a SimplyMiles offer for that merchant.

travel short status

So, I recommend considering the many other ways to earn Loyalty Points before paying money or miles for an AAdvantage buy-up status offer. But, if you decide to purchase a buy-up offer, the next decision is whether to use miles or cash. TPG values AAdvantage miles at 1.55 cents each, so our valuations would recommend you pay cash. However, if you have a large stash of AAdvantage miles you don't think you'll even spend, you may want to redeem American miles for the buy-up offer.

If you purchase a status buy-up offer, your account will show the new status within five business days of the purchase if you accept an offer for a higher status than you currently hold. But, if you purchase a status level that is the same or lower than your current one, your account will gain the status April 1 (or within five business days of your purchase if you complete the purchase after that date).

Finally, note that you won't be eligible for Loyalty Point Rewards if you pay for an offer. Instead, you'll only earn Loyalty Point Rewards if you meet the published criteria for these rewards, which means you'll need to meet the specified Loyalty Point thresholds.

Bottom line

The American AAdvantage status buy-up offers I've seen haven't been compelling. As I showed in the previous section, there are better ways to earn more Loyalty Points and secure status. Most travelers will find flights, AAdvantage credit cards and the AAdvantage eShopping portal are the most lucrative ways to earn the Loyalty Points they want.

  • Delivered to a mail facility. Your tracking number may say that your application has "Arrived" at the mail facility.
  • Sent from the mail facility to an intake facility where your payment is processed (check is cashed).
  • Sent by the intake facility to a passport agency or center.

It may take up to 2 weeks from the day you apply until your application status is "In Process" at one of our passport agencies and centers.

Problem with your Application : In some cases, it may take longer than 2 weeks if our intake facility finds a problem with your application. We will contact you if we need more information.

Technical Issue : We may have a temporary, technical issue with our system. Please try again in several hours.

Entering Your Last Name : If you cannot find a status update on the first try, make sure the name you enter is spelled the same as the name you provided on your passport form. If you have a hyphen in your name, try entering your name with and without the hyphen.

Why does my status say "Mailed" if I just applied?

Your status may be "Mailed" if you received a new passport in the last 180 days, and you are re-applying for a new passport. For example, you may need to use  Form DS-5504 if you need to Change or Correct Your Passport . It may take 2 weeks after the date you apply on Form DS-5504 for your status to change to "In Process."

Why does my status say "In Process" after it was already "Approved"?

You may see this update if we discovered a problem we need to fix during our final review of your passport. We are fixing the issue and preparing to print a new passport for you.

Will I receive my new passport and my documents back in one envelope?

You will get multiple mailings. The number of mailings depends on what document(s) you asked for.

Passport Book : You may get your new passport and citizenship documents in two mailings. You may wait 8 weeks after getting your passport before you get a second mailing with your citizenship documents. We will return the passport book using a trackable delivery service.

Passport Card : You may get your new passport card and your citizenship documents in two mailings. You may wait 8 weeks after getting your passport before you get a second mailing with your citizenship documents. • New passport card
  • Citizenship documents

Contacting Us : If you have been waiting more than 8 weeks for your citizenship documents, call us at  1-877-487-2778 .

How do I know which location is processing my application and has my documents?

The first two digits of your nine-digit passport application locator number allow you to know which agency or center is working on your application. You can find your application locator number by checking our  Online Passport Status System . The unique digits for each of our agencies and centers are below.

Processing Times
