Yastika Bhatia of India plays a shot during day one against England in the women's Test in Mumbai

TalkSport seals rights for England tours of India with BBC missing out again

  • Radio rights deal includes England men’s and women’s tours
  • BBC’s interest in the Hundred is reportedly cooling

TalkSport has secured radio rights for the England men’s tour of India in the new year, with BBC’s Test Match Special again missing out to its commercial rival.

Both broadcasters are understood to have been in the bidding for exclusive rights to cover England tours of India – in men’s and women’s cricket – over the next four years, with TalkSport informed its bid was the winner on Wednesday.

The deal has seemingly been agreed too late for the women’s Test match in Mumbai that began on Thursday. A source at TalkSport told the Guardian it was “exploring” how to cover the remainder of the match but, with the Twenty20 leg of the tour completed, and a team in the Caribbean covering England’s men, it appears unlikely.

The television rights for the five-Test men’s series in India that starts on 25 January are still to be sold, with TNT Sports (formerly BT Sport) possibly favourites, given Sky’s recent retreat from overseas tours. England’s most recent men’s Test series in India – the 2021 tour that was played before restricted crowds because of the pandemic – was eventually shown on Channel 4 after Sky and BT pulled out of the running.

TalkSport is vying to become the radio home of England internationals, with this four-year deal for India added to a list of overseas territories that already includes the Caribbean and New Zealand. Test Match Special still has the rights to the next men’s Ashes series in Australia, as well as ICC tournaments and home internationals until 2028.

It remains to be seen if the BBC will stay on as the junior television partner to Sky for the home summer, however, amid suggestions the corporation’s interest in the Hundred is cooling. While Sky has already re-signed until the end of 2028, the BBC’s deal with the England and Wales Cricket Board – which also features evening highlights for Test cricket and digital clips on the BBC website – has only one year remaining.

after newsletter promotion

This may leave the ECB in a tricky position, with the BBC’s reach – including promotion across its numerous channels, stations and platforms – considered central to the Hundred’s remit. While other free-to-air broadcasters are expected to enter the conversation, the upshot may be a retention by the BBC at a reduced cost.

Glenn maxwell steps away from cricket again to address mental health.

DHAKA, BANGLADESH - AUGUST 22: Glenn Maxwell of Australia pours water over his head during an ... [+] Australian Test team nets session at Sher-E Bangla National Cricket Stadium on August 22, 2017 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. (Photo by Robert Cianflone/Getty Images)

Glenn Maxwell has announced he is taking an indefinite mental and physical break from cricket during the IPL tournament where he has been playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The all-rounder is no stranger to being transparent about the way he feels and parking sport for health reasons.

If ever there was a man who lived for cricket, it was Maxwell. "It's a game that I've loved since I can even remember being able to walk and to have so many negative thoughts was quite alarming," he said to Cricket.com.au in March 2020. The Australian was one of the first cricketers to cite mental health issues when it was announced he was taking time away from the game in October 2019. The day after admitting that things were not in shape, he still smashed 62 off 28 balls against Sri Lanka in a T20. The relief of getting it out was a release.

Eventually, it got to a point where the mask had to slip . The banality of saying everything is fine to interested and detached parties would not do anymore. The automatic process of putting on a front, like putting on the Baggy Green cap as a statement of identity, was not helping. Maxwell decided to hide his internal thunder until it would crack.

Five years ago, The Big Show, a moniker that the player is not a fan of , didn’t want to be the star of the game’s biggest trophy. He was physically and mentally shot. When injured during a net session in that World Cup campaign in England, the Victorian was almost hoping for a way out: “When I got hit, I was angry and a part of me was hoping [my arm] was broken. I was like ‘this is it, I just need a break’ I was thinking about things I could do on the way back (from hospital) to snap it.”

The refresh, if it can be called that, was a success in that it allowed the player to recalibrate and understand what really made him the person outside the suitcase of constant touring. He spoke to Moises Henriques, who had suffered from depression, team psychologist Michael Lloyd and sports psychiatrist Ranjit Menon to discover the way back. Putting on the pads for his club team was also cathartic, albeit somewhat anxiety-inducing as the path to rediscover the innocence of the sport began.

Undoubtedly, cricket has a history of being one of the most wearing in the world for schedules. National captain Pat Cummins gave a recent interview where he spoke about the relentless treadmill of cricket being 12 months a year. The joy of the game can get lost in the extended franchise season squeezed between Test series tours and World Cups.

“ Cricket may not be a physical contact sport but its mental challenges , with so much waiting time, are much tougher than they look,” Australian journalist Robert Craddock wrote in one of his columns. It is true. There are so many more failures than successes in the sport and cricket’s nature can elongate and internalize the worry. Strikers can get a quick shot at redemption if they miss an open goal. Batsmen do not have that chance.

It was Maxwell himself who asked to be dropped after scoring just 32 runs in six innings so far for RCB in the IPL. "I've probably been in this situation before in the past where you can keep playing and get yourself deeper into a hole. I think now is a good time to give myself a mental and physical break and get my body right,” he said.

MUMBAI, INDIA - NOVEMBER 07: Glenn Maxwell of Australia celebrates after hitting a six for the ... [+] winning runs, finishing unbeten on 201 not out during the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup India 2023 between Australia and Afghanistan at Wankhede Stadium on November 07, 2023 in Mumbai, India. (Photo by Robert Cianflone/Getty Images)

It was only a few months ago that Maxwell smashed an unbelievable double century against Afghanistan in the ODI World Cup on virtually one leg . It was clear that it took a huge amount out of him at the time. One of the follow-up innings he made in the T20 series - incomprehensibly scheduled immediately after Australia’s World Cup victory against beaten finalists India - was just as entertaining.

Now is the time to switch off the remote control. Those staggering sixes can never be taken for granted. Last time, the Big Bash got Maxwell going again. Maybe the T20 carnival in the Caribbean and the States will see him back for some rum fun.

England's Jofra Archer not fully confident of playing T20 World Cup 2024 at 'home'

England pacer bowler jofra archer has stated that he cannot endure another year of injury-plagued cricket as he seeks a position in the t20 world cup squad. archer's career has been marred by injuries..

  • Archer's career has affected by recurrent injuries
  • Archer keen on returning to regular cricket

England pacer Jofra Archer wants to play the upcoming T20 World Cup for England in front of his family in the West Indies but admits that the 'stop-start' year may ruin his chances. Archer has been plagued by many injuries for numerous years, preventing him from playing international cricket consistently. His last professional game was in May of last year, and he has been out of play since due to an elbow injury. Archer was chosen as the only travelling reserve for the 2023 World Cup. He also recently flew to India as part of Sussex's pre-season tour, where he had a couple of good bowling performances. According to the ECB's current plans, he will return to international cricket during England's T20I series against Pakistan in May, just before the T20 World Cup.

He was also sidelined for much of 2021 and 2022 due to back and elbow injuries. "Last year, I played from January to May, because I did go to the IPL as well. And then the year before that, I played maybe one or two games for Sussex, so I've had a whole year of nothing ...," Archer told 4Cast's 'The Athlete's Voice' podcast on Wednesday.

"Hopefully, from June 1 to when June 1 comes next year, hopefully I've had no breaks... no injuries, and just constantly playing. "It's been a while and honestly, I don't know if I've got another stop-start year in me. That's the truth, I don't know if I've got another one."

Earlier this month, Rob Key, executive director of the England men's team, stated that the fast bowler might still compete in the World Cup in the West Indies and the United States, which begins on June 1. Archer stated he just wanted to get back to playing consistently, even if he did not make the World Cup roster.

Just Not Cricket: Indian Politicians Bat For Power

US President Donald Trump and India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a cricket stadium in Ahmedabad in February 2020

Cricket is more than just a game in India: critics accuse ruling-party politicians and the sport's closely linked mega-rich board of exploiting its huge popularity for electoral advantage.

India begins voting in six-week-long general elections on Friday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) widely expected to sweep to a third term in power.

Modi's BJP is intricately tied to the powerful Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), with commentators saying the ruling party has sought to co-opt the sport as a tool to bowl out political opponents.

Veteran cricket journalist Sharda Ugra said the sport is "used as a vehicle for a muscular nationalism".

"Control is exercised not just through its presence of senior officials connected to the ruling party, but through the use of Indian cricket to further their political messaging," she told AFP.

Modi's government is far from the first to use cricket for political gain in India, but his populist BJP has tightened those links further than any before, added Ugra.

BCCI chief Jay Shah is the son of home affairs minister Amit Shah, Modi's right-hand man and himself a former president of the Gujarat state cricket board.

Arun Dhumal, chairman of the money-spinning Indian Premier League, is the brother of sports minister Anurag Thakur, who is also an ex-BCCI head.

"The current BCCI is the first Indian cricketing administration which is under the control of a single political party, and not a general clutch of politicians," said Ugra.

Gideon Haigh, cricket writer for The Australian newspaper, has called the BJP "shameless in its self-interest" for co-opting the sport.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other high-ranking politicians at the World Cup final in Ahmedabad last year

"Cricket is just one of many institutions it has captured, although it is the one most meaningful to the most people," Haigh told AFP.

The BJP won state elections in Rajasthan in December, and last month a minister's son took charge of the cricket board.

In New Delhi, the capital's stadium was renamed in 2019 after a BJP stalwart, the late finance minister Arun Jaitley, whose son Rohan Jaitley heads the state cricket board.

For the previous 137 years, it had been called the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium, after a 14th-century Muslim sultan.

And when India hosted the ODI World Cup last year, Modi attended the final at the world's biggest cricket stadium  -- which is named after him -- in Ahmedabad.

A home victory would undoubtedly have further boosted national pride ahead of the election, but India lost in the decider.

Modi went into the dressing room, accompanied by a camera crew, to embrace the Indian team. "It happens," he told them. "Keep smiling, the country is looking up to you."

India's delays or denials of visas for the tournament for players and fans from arch-rival Pakistan had raised some concerns.

Other players with Pakistani heritage -- including Australia's Usman Khawaja and England's Shoaib Bashir -- have also faced visa challenges during India tours.

A member of staff walks past the logo of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in Mumbai

The BCCI did not respond to a series of questions submitted by AFP.

Cricket is a lucrative business in the world's most populous nation, home to 1.4 billion people.

By some counts, Indian cricket on average generates more revenue than Bollywood.

The IPL is the world's richest cricket league and has added to the BCCI's wealth, with the board selling the 2023-27 T20 tournament's broadcast and digital rights for $6.2 billion.

Commentators say the BCCI's wealth and reach enables it to pull strings at cricket's world governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC).

More than 90 percent of the sport's billion-plus worldwide fans are in the Indian subcontinent, according to a 2018 ICC study.

In other countries, the ICC has been swift to suspend boards over political interference, including in Zimbabwe in 2019 and Sri Lanka last year.

ICC rules say cricket boards must manage their affairs "autonomously" and "ensure that there is no government (or other public or quasi-public body) interference in its governance".

The ICC declined to comment on India's role.

Modi opened his eponymous 132,000-seater ground in Ahmedabad in 2020 in a mega-rally for then-US president Donald Trump.

Haigh covered the 2023 India-Australia series and recalled how Modi toured the venue in a golf cart alongside his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese when it hosted the fourth Test.

BJP members, government officials and school children were bussed in for the event, cheering as Modi lapped the venue.

The stadium rapidly emptied after the leaders left, even as play began.

"That the ICC -- which purports to deplore political interference in cricket -- studiously looked the other way, tells you all you need to know about its capture by the BCCI," Haigh said.

Cricket is more than just a game in India: critics accuse ruling-party politicians and the sport's closely linked mega-rich board of exploiting its huge popularity for electoral advantage.

Cricket Captain 2023

Cricket Captain 2023

Video: cricket captain 2023.

A packed international schedule awaits, including the oldest Test Match rivalry as Australia tour England, the Test Championship Final and the 2023 World Cup.

Cricket Captain 2023, the immersive gaming experience that takes you to the heart of professional management. Whether you're a seasoned cricket strategist or a newcomer to the sport, this game offers endless possibilities and challenges that will keep you hooked for hours on end.

With an extensive player database featuring real-world cricketers, you'll have the power to recruit, train, and nurture your own squad of talented players. Analyse their strengths, weaknesses, and form to create the perfect combination of batting, bowling, and fielding prowess. The decisions you make off the field will determine your team's success on the field.

The new aggression system, inspired by Bazball, uses batting ability and natural aggression based on the current batting tactic, rather than the type of match being played. A generation of cricketers brought up on 20 Over Cricket have naturally aggressive styles that mean many have higher one-day averages than first class. Batting aggressively to match their natural style can improve performance. Equally, knocking runs off at 12 an over is natural to players in the last overs of a 20 over (or even Test) match.

Cricket Captain 2023 also includes historical data for international player rankings and player recent form, including recent performances in Test, ODI and 20 Over Internationals. International team ranking modelled using results of every match in the four-year window. Accurate wicket keeper statistics are also included, with separate fielding stats for keepers and outfielders, as well as byes conceded records.

All domestic systems include the latest developments in India, South Africa and around the world.

Key features for 2023 include:

• Match Engine: new Bazball inspired player aggression and rating system.

• International Team Rankings: calculated from last 4 years results.

• International Player Rankings: with historical data, all-rounders and improved system.

• Asia Trophy: play in ODI and 20 Over International tournaments.

• Player Form: includes historical data, opposition and an updated system.

• Recent Internationals: recent international player form graphs.

• Wicket Keeper Statistics: keeper and outfield catches, byes conceded.

• Wicket Keeper Ability: greater accuracy for keeping ability.

• Stadium Model Updates: including new Perth stadium.

• New South African Franchise League: six new teams.

• Indian Domestic System: major update to all competitions.

• Domestic System Updates: all systems updated to latest rules and formats.

• Improved Player Generation: re-balanced with focus on player aggression.

• New Kits: including international and Australian 20 Over.

• Test and ODI Championships: updated for the 2023 season.

• Tournament Modes: play in stand-alone One Day or 20 Over World Cups. Create your own World XIs, All-Time Great and Custom Match Series.

• Interface: improved screen layout and flow.

Complete Stats Update for the 2023 Season:

• Updated player database with over 7,500 players.

• Added historical keeper and outfield stats.

• Updated versus, ground and team records with partnerships, bowling and batting records.

• Updated domestic squads for all 146 playable domestic teams.

• Updated recent series stats for all players.
