Art gallery’s ‘Ekphrasis Exhibition’ display opens April 29

The Lamorinda Arts Alliance, Lamorinda Arts Council and California Writers Club, Mount Diablo Branch, are collaborating to present “Ekphrasis Exhibition” in the Orinda Library’s art gallery from April 29 through June 28.

The exhibit’s organizers say “ekphrasis” is a Greek word defined as writing that describes, explains or is inspired by another art form, a literary device that began with Plato and Aristotle, and that beautiful things happen when the arts intertwine.

The arts groups, along with the writers club branch, developed this creative project as an exhibition of fine artworks that inspire literary works, which will be on display to be enjoyed by the public, art and literary enthusiasts and collectors.

Visitors to the exhibit will be immersed in the inspired works of more than 90 talented visual artists and authors showcased in a diverse range of literary expressions, including prose/flash in fiction, nonfiction, memoir, essay and poetic forms. The visual artwork is in mixed media, glasswork, sculpture, paintings, photography and porcelain.

The library’s art gallery at 26 Orinda Way in Orinda is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is closed on Sundays. For more information, visit laa4art.org online.

Spartanburg Little Theatre announces 2024-25 lineup with Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame theme

theatre hall trips

Chapman Cultural Center rocked Thursday night as Spartanburg Little Theater supporters and volunteers celebrated the 10th annual season reveal.

The lineup features a mix of Broadway productions, adult comedies, and family classics. Here's the list:

  • Cinderella the Musical; Sept. 6-22
  • Murder on the Orient Express; Nov. 1-10
  • Little Shop of Horrors; Jan. 17-26
  • You Can't Take It with You; March 7-16
  • The Full Monty, Broadway; May 2-11, 2025
  • Escape to Margaritaville: July 11-20, 2025

Season ticket holders Evalie and Adam Loriaux, of Boiling Springs, said the shows are unmissable.

"These shows rival, just from the talent they get here, it's amazing," Evalie said. "I really liked the Sherlock Holmes show they performed here, last season. This season, I loved the Red Velvet Cake [War], it was hilarious! It's just so personable here, and when the show is over you can come out and talk to the cast."

People attended in iconic, rock n' roll fashion and let loose on the dance floor, wondering what new shows the theater would produce for the 2024-2025 season.

Clint Walker, scenic designer for SLT, and his fiancé, Silas Crisp, said everyone goes all out for the season reveals, getting in theme and having a great time.

"It's the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame, you have to go all out!" Walker said. "Big costumes, big crowds, everybody goes all out for the reveals."

Anna Renninger, a regular attendee, said she's most excited about Little Shop of Horrors since it was one of her favorite movies.

"I'm so excited about Little Shop of Horrors," Renninger said. "I grew up watching that movie, and it's so good! I'm just so excited for it."

The shows are performed at the Chapman Center. Tickets for individual shows and season tickets are available on the theatre's website.

ROME (AP) — Archaeologists excavating new sites in Pompeii have uncovered a sumptuous banquet hall decorated with intricately frescoed mythological characters inspired by the Trojan War, officials said Thursday.

The hall, which features a mosaic floor, was uncovered as part of a project to shore up the areas dividing the excavated and unexcavated parts of Pompeii, the ancient city near Naples that was destroyed in A.D. 79 when Mount Vesuvius erupted.

The banquet hall was used for refined entertaining and features black walls, a technique that prevented the smoke from oil lamps from being seen, said Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director of the Pompeii archaeological park.

The figures painted against that black backdrop include Helen of Troy and Apollo. Experts said the reference to mythological figures was designed to entertain guests and provide conversation starters.

The room, which is about 15 meters (yards) long and 6 meters (yards) wide, opens onto a courtyard near a staircase leading to the first floor of the home, the park said in a press release.

Excavations in Pompeii have recently focused on areas of the city where the middle classes and servants lived , while previous ones have concentrated on the elaborately frescoed villas of Pompeii’s upper classes.

The excavations that yielded the new banquet hall are designed to improve the hydrogeological structure of the entire park, to make it more sustainable as the region copes with climate extremes — heavy rainfall and intense heat — that are threatening the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
