How to stream the star trek tv shows in the us, how to stream the star trek movies in the uk, how to stream the star trek tv shows in the uk.

Here's our Star Trek streaming guide, so you know where to go boldly where you've never gone before... Without leaving your sofa. We've come up with this Star Trek streaming guide because since the first ever episode aired back in 1966, there's been  a huge number of additions into the franchise.

Star Trek is currently in a bit of a purple patch for content as Paramount Plus , which is the home of all things Star Trek, is responsible for several new shows in recent years. But, it's not just new content, you'll also find where to stream the classics both movies and TV series below.

Before, Star Trek content was scattered all around different streaming services and searching for what you wanted to watch could feel like hunting for a cloaked Bird of Prey. However, these days you're able to stream all Star Trek content out there on Paramount Plus. However, we do have round-ups of the best sci-fi movies and TV shows on Netflix , Disney Plus and Amazon if you want to check them out.

You can also check out our take on the Star Trek movies, ranked so you know which movies to beam up onto your device. While Paramount Plus has everything Star Trek out there, you can find the odd bit of content on other platforms. So, below you'll find where you can watch what, regardless of where you're based, in our Star Trek streaming guide.

Walter Koenig, Leonard Nimoy, William Shatner, James Doohan, DeForest Kelley, George Takei, and Nichelle Nichols in Star Trek IV The Voyage Home (1986)_Paramount Pictures

The Star Trek movies can be divided into three tidy groups: the original cast, the Next Generation cast, and the reboot cast. All of them can be found on Paramount+. However, Paramount+ isn't the only place you can stream the movies and in some cases you can rent or buy from places such as Amazon .

Here’s how to stream the Star Trek movies in the U.S., in order of release:

Star Trek: The Motion Picture — Paramount+ Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan — Paramount+ Star Trek III: The Search for Spock — Paramount+ Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home — Paramount+ Star Trek V: The Final Frontier — Paramount+ Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country — Paramount+ Star Trek: Generations — Paramount+ Star Trek: First Contact — Paramount+ Star Trek: Insurrection — Paramount+ , Spectrum Star Trek: Nemesis — Paramount+   Star Trek (2009) — Paramount+ , Pluto TV Star Trek Into Darkness — Paramount+ , Pluto TV Star Trek Beyond — Paramount+ , DIRECTV , Freevee

When it comes to Star Trek on the small screen, you can find them all in one place. Paramount+ not only has every episode of every legacy Trek show, it’s also the home of all the new Star Trek programming, such as Picard and Strange New Worlds. If you’re a Trekkie, you absolutely want to have Paramount+ to keep up with the object of your affection. A word of warning though, other streaming platforms may only have select episodes or series to stream.

Star Trek: The Original Series — Paramount+ , Pluto TV Star Trek: The Next Generation — Paramount+ , Pluto TV Star Trek: Deep Space Nine  — Paramount+ , Sling , Spectrum Star Trek: Voyager — Paramount+ , Pluto TV Star Trek: Enterprise — Paramount+ Star Trek: Discovery — Paramount+ , DIRECTV Star Trek: Picard — Paramount+ Star Trek: Short Treks — Paramount+ Star Trek: Lower Decks — Paramount+ Star Trek: Prodigy — Paramount+ ,   DIRECTV , FuboTV , Spectrum Star Trek: The Animated Series — Paramount+ Star Trek: Strange New Worlds — Paramount+

Now that Paramount+ has arrived in the U.K, streaming Star Trek is a lot easier. You can view most of the movies on the streaming platform. Star Trek Beyond is the exception but that can be found on Amazon Prime. If you're not prepared to subscribe to Paramount+, the movies are available to rent or buy from a number of different platforms.

Now that Paramount+ has reached those across the pond, the U.K. can enjoy streaming Star Trek shows as well. Netflix is also another great option to fulfil your Trekkie viewing needs, especially if you're interested in checking out Star Trek: The Animated Series, which is exclusive to Netflix.

However, for the likes of Picard and Lower Decks, you’ll have to hop on over to Amazon Prime. It's worth noting that platforms such as SkyGo may only have a select number of episodes or series to stream.

Star Trek: The Next Generation is still on Netflix. But not forever!

star trek next generation netflix uk

The trial never ends. In Star Trek: Picard Season 2 , the all-powerful trickster god known as “Q” (John de Lancie) will once again return to the Trek canon. Long ago, on The Next Generation, Q told Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) that the trial of humanity was ongoing, a sentiment he’s reiterated in the trailers for Picard Season 2. So, ahead of the March 3 return of Q vs. Picard, here are five essential TNG episodes to binge.

Is Star Trek still on Netflix?

In 2021 three Star Trek series, The Original Series , Voyager, and Enterprise, all left Netflix for Paramount+. But, at least for now, The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine are both still on Netflix. Sources think these two series could leave Netflix as early as February 2022, so enjoy them while you can.

Star Trek

Q (John de Lancie) and Picard (Patrick Stewart) at the very beginning.

5. “Encounter at Farpoint,” Season 1, Episode 1

In the very first episode of The Next Generation , the crew of the USS Enterprise-D were challenged by the all-powerful Q, who claimed that humanity was a “savage, child race.” Picard and the crew were then perpetually on trial for the crimes of all of humanity. The concept of Q — a mercurial space deity — was a late addition to the script. Some early TNG writers, like David Gerrold and Dorothy Fontana (co-writer of “Encounter at Farpoint”) felt Q was too similar to another flippant space god from The Original Series named Trelane.

However, the idea of Q as the ultimate adversary for Picard came from Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. And, because Q is back for the new season of Picard, it’s clear his gamble paid off. Watch this one to figure out what Q’s whole deal was, and how Picard briefly won him over.

Star Trek Picard Patrick Stewart

Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg) and Picard encounter the Borg... and Q.

4.“Q, Who,” Season 2, Episode 16

The Season 2 trailer for Picard also reintroduced the fan favorite character of Guinan , famously played by Whoopi Goldberg. In The Next Generation , Guinan joined the crew during the show’s second season. Midway through that season, Q returned and forced the Enterprise to meet the Borg for the first time.

This episode also established that Q and Guinan had a history together, implying Guinan’s powers were far greater than she had let-on. Season 2 of Picard will bring back the Borg (and the Borg Queen ), Q, and Guinan. But all of that starts right here with TNG’s “Q, Who . ”

Star Trek

Dr. Cruhser (Gates McFadden) faces some unpleasant memories.

3. “Family,” Season 4, Episode 2

Picard Season 2 will find us returning, somehow, to Jean-Luc Picard’s chateau in France. The trailers also imply that some important event in Picard’s past occurred on the family chateau, and that event could have history-altering implications.

But when did we first learn that Jean-Luc Picard’s family owned a French vineyard? In the TNG episode “Family,” right after Picard was rescued from the Borg, we met his grumpy older brother, as well as his sister-in-law and nephew. All of Jean-Luc’s family angst was established in this episode.

Star Trek

Data (Brent Spider) and his human “father,” Dr. Noonian Soong.

2. “Brothers,” Season 4, Episode 3

Picard Season 2 also features the return of Brent Spiner , most famous for playing the android Data in The Next Generation . Spiner revealed last year that he’ll be playing yet another new character in the Soong family, the human clan that eventually produced Data’s creator, Noonien Soong.

In the Picard Season 2 trailers, Spiner plays a Soong ancestor living in 2024, which makes him the oldest member of the Soong family we’ve seen so far. But Data’s entire family tree was first established in The Next Generation , and the episode that showed us the most was “Brothers.” In this episode, Spiner played Data, his twin “brother” Lore, and his “father,” Dr. Noonien Song. It’s a classic, and essential to understanding the Soong family dynamics.

Star Trek

Q shows Picard his past... and an alternate future.

1. “Tapestry,” Season 6, Episode 15

A slightly underrated TNG classic, you can just call this one “Sliding Doors Trek.” Q appears to Picard and shows him a glimpse of what his life would look like if he’d made a very different choice in his youth. One of the greatest TNG morality plays, this one ends with Q helping Picard make the right decision, indicating that Q isn’t evil and, in fact, is even fond of Jean-Luc.

Star Trek

Picard versus Q in another alterante future.

Bonus: “All Good Things...,” Season 7, Episode 25

If you’re watching Next Generation highlights before Picard Season 2, you may want to round it out with the series finale, “All Good Things...” This episode , in theory, brought Q and Picard’s story full circle. Although Q appeared on Deep Space Nine and Voyager after The Next Generation ended in 1994, “All Good Things...” was his last meeting with Picard. Until now.

Q’s motives in “All Good Things...” are all over the place and, like Picard Season 2, time travel is a big part of the story. If you want to remember how these two left things, “All Good Things...” will put you in the perfect mindset for Picard Season 2 when Q’s bizarre trial resumes anew.

Star Trek: The Next Generation is streaming on Netflix ... for now.

3 Star Trek Series Leaving Netflix In September, Signals Possible Move To Consolidate Franchise On Paramount+

star trek next generation netflix uk

| August 26, 2021 | By: Anthony Pascale 54 comments so far

The library of Star Trek television series has been readily available on all the major streaming services in the USA for years, but it looks like those days may be coming to an end.

Netflix says goodbye to TOS, Voyager , and Enterprise

On Wednesday, Netflix announced all the shows coming and going from the service in September and three Star Trek shows were included, all of which will be leaving at the end of the month. Exiting Netflix are all three seasons of Star Trek: The Original Series , all seven seasons of Star Trek: Voyager , and all four seasons of  Star Trek: Enterprise . So far, there is no word on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine .

Netflix was the first streaming service to license the Star Trek television catalog, having cut a deal in early 2011 . Four of the five Star Trek shows started streaming in July 2011 , with DS9 joining in October. Licensing deals for all five series were struck with Hulu and the Amazon Prime Video service in subsequent years. Star Trek: The Animated Series was available on Netflix and other services for a few years, but is currently only available on Paramount+.

Star Trek has been popular on Netflix, with Voyager being the most rewatched according to a Netflix release in 2017 . And of course Netflix partnered with CBS to create Star Trek: Discovery in 2017, with Netflix distributing it outside the USA and Canada.

Starting with its 2014 launch, all of the Star Trek shows were available for streaming on CBS All Access, which was relaunched by ViacomCBS as Paramount+ earlier this year. Paramount Plus is the exclusive home in the USA to three original Star Trek series ( Discovery , Picard , and Lower Decks ), with two more arriving over the next year (the animated kids series Prodigy and the live-action Strange New Worlds ).

Star Trek coming home to Paramount Plus?

Unlike feature films which have short licensing windows and move around, as we saw recently with a number of the Star Trek feature films , television licensing deals tend to be long term. The Star Trek shows have been on Netflix consistently for ten years. The same is true for Hulu and Amazon Prime since joining those streaming services. In theory, Netflix and ViacomCBS could renegotiate a license, however, industry trends indicate this is could be the beginning of the end for Star Trek shows being sold to other streaming services. If that is the case, DS9 and TNG will eventually leave Netflix when deals for those shows expire, and all five shows will drop out of Hulu and Amazon as well; as of now, there are no details on if or when this will happen.

Assuming this is the plan, it would leave Paramount Plus as the exclusive streamer for the Star Trek television library in the USA. This type of pulling back of licensed properties has been a trend in the industry: Warner Media did it with Friends on HBO Max and NBC Universal did the same with The Office and Parks and Recreation on Peacock. ViacomCBS is also doing this with other shows. For example, Evil is also exiting Netflix in September. In June that series moved from the CBS Broadcast Network to become a Paramount Plus original series with a brand new season.

While not explicitly calling out Star Trek, ViacomCBS has made it clear they are pivoting away from their previous policy of aggressively licensing their content. Earlier this month when speaking about the latest quarterly results, CEO Bob Bakish noted that licensing revenue had fallen due in part to “ongoing efforts to limit licensing to third-party streaming services.”

As of now, there is no indication that ViacomCBS is pulling back on licensing Star Trek internationally, where all the series are still available on Netflix and other streaming services. ViacomCBS has also partnered with Netflix and Amazon to stream some of their new Star Trek shows internationally. However, in the long term, as Paramount Plus expands globally, the Star Trek franchise may eventually follow the same pattern seen in the USA.

TrekMovie has reached out to both ViacomCBS and Netflix and we are awaiting comment.

Netflix To Release All 20 Episodes Of ‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Season 2 In July; Also Coming To SkyShowtime

That’s kind of annoying. I still usually use Netflix to watch Trek. I guess now I’ll have to use either Paramount +, Hulu, or Prime.

This news is NOT a bad thing!

The bad thing is paying Paramount+ and not having the whole Star Trek collection. Waiting to have all the movies and series in ONE place. :P

I have that. It’s called my bookshelf. :P

(I say this knowing some smartass will snag me on Lower Decks Season 2, Discovery Season 4, Picard Season 2 and Strange New Worlds Season 1)

Someone, I think here, sniped me for saying I like to have the option of streaming something I physically own when I’m away from home. But it’s true – I would happily visit a friend and watch a Star Trek movie with them one night. But I don’t want to suddenly have to subscribe to Showtime to do that.

True. Waiting for that moment. My issue is buying the latest digital format when (soon) will become obsolete. Eventually will begin to order the entire collection.

Same here. When all else fails you can always count on physical media.

Owning the physical media is still the best way to go.

I’m not the biggest Netflix fan, but they have the best interface, by far. It’s perfectly designed and intuitive. Paramount+ just slapped a new name on the ancient CBS All Access architecture. It’s a total mess, by far the worst streaming interface of them all. They only just added a friggin playlist feature! Even the selection of avatars is pathetic.

It’s not surprising that Trek is being used like this, it’s pattern behavior. But it would be nice if some effort was put into making P+ a halfway decent streamer.

Another negative about Paramount+ (and Peacock) is that it forgets what you have watched. I watched Lower Decks season 1 but if you looked now, it shows I haven’t watched any of the episodes. Netflix, HBO Max, Prime, Hulu, and Disney+ will remember what you have watched if you stop watching a series but return to it months later.

This will probably reduce further the number of people into Trek and turn fans like us only into a checkbook. Voyager’s late popularity AFIK is all Netflix based.

On the other hand… now… the fans…. Are in control!! Bwahahahaha!

While I do subscribe to Paramount plus to get the new shows, I’m doubly glad that I have my beloved TOS on BluRay.

Same here (and TAS, TNG , the first ten movies, the first season of Lower Decks , and the recent DS9 doc; I still need to get DS9 itself and Voyager on DVD and Enterprise on Blu-ray). Streaming is fantastically convenient, but physical media is still kind of a must for the “core” stuff one really cares about.

Why not just rip your whole Trek collection and stream it anywhere with Plex?

What is this “anywhere” of which you speak? :p

It’s a bit cumbersome, but you can download a Plex app to almost every smart TV and log in to your media server pc with Plex on it, and you can stream everywhere, in an emergency Trek withdrawal you can even stream to a mobile phone ;)

I figured, but I was more joking about “anywhere”, since I don’t really go places now the way I used to in The Before Times, way back in ancient 2019.

A lot of newer fans dropped in from Netflix in the last decade, they’d be wise to keep licensing. . I remember when the 2009 movie came out, more people than I had ever known were getting into it because of their availability.

I’m thinking that ViacomCBS will use Pluto to build the audience by offering the classic five live-action series and TAS for free with its advertising based streamer.

Pluto is doing very well in Latin America and the European countries where it launched.

As based video seems a natural successor to the years of syndicated Trek reruns many of us grew up with.

Still, it’s a double-edged sword to have to put up with ads vs. just continue using the most popular streaming service. I totally get the point of hoarding IP, feeding content to competitors is largely only good for short term gains at the expense of controlling distribution, and ViacomCBS doesn’t just have Paramount+ and Pluto to think about, it has its broadcast business which Netflix openly declared war on when it started producing original programming.

But I for one, if presented with the choice of Pluto or Netflix to get certain programming (especially a movie), would choose the latter every time, despite the price. I’m lucky to have that disposable income, but we have been lucky that CBS licensed Trek out so liberally a decade ago.

I don’t really want to shell out for Paramount+, until they have reliable new Trek content. Since I don’t own Enterprise or Voyager in a hard copy format, this is disappointing. So long as it’s still available on Amazon Prime though, I guess I’m okay. Those days seem numbered too though.

This happens as the streaming license is near its end. Plenty of time for Netflix and Paramount to renew the license. I really doubt very old episodes of ST is going to get more people subscribing to Paramount +.

Does Paramount+ have TOS with the original effects?

I wish, it bothers me I have to watch the crap CGI

They should have both if they’re going to be the home of STAR TREK. Right now I think Amazon Prime has both (the original and remastered).

Amazon does have both, thank you for pointing that out!

For quite awhile, Amazon was also the only place to get uncut Voyager season 5, everyone else had the US cuts which deleted scenes after delivery when UPN added more commercials mid-season.

It’s funny, I’ve had Amazon Prime for several years but I barely watch anything on it. Perhaps I should start!

Buy the BD. Then you will get a choice.

Whoa! Well… there we go. I think many of us had long wondered whether they’d continue to license the old stuff to other services indefinitely (non-exclusively, of course). Now we know.

Honestly, I can see benefits to either offering (non-exclusive) licenses for the older shows and movies to alternate services like Netflix, or bringing everything in-house to be exclusive to Paramount+; both paths can be part of viable strategies. Obviously, pulling everything back home makes P+ that much more of a vital, must-have service for fans of this franchise (the same way Disney+ is for fans of Marvel or Star Wars , say). OTOH, I could see having non-exclusive licenses for Trek being not only a great way to make more money from a variety of sources on the back catalogue, but also helping ensure the longevity of the franchise by making it easier for newcomers to the franchise to discover it and get hooked. Presumably Viacom has data indicating which is likelier to be more lucrative in the long-term.

Like others, though, I’m personally a bit disappointed. I have P+ for the new stuff, of course, but for streaming the older shows, I tend to prefer Netflix, simply because the interface is more comfortable, or even putting in physical discs like your great-great-great-great-grandfather used to. I guess eventually I’ll watch everything on P+, but man, Star Trek just felt like such a mainstay on Netflix for so long. I’m going to miss having it there.

Internationally it makes sense for them to keep selling the rights to new trek at least to other streaming services. Its their most expensive streaming franchise and they need the biggest return on it.

Paramount+ launched in Australia this month and there is no way they would make the same money streaming it themselves as they do selling it to the bigger services. I imagine after a few years of growth the new and old series will return home, if Paramount+ manages to gain a customer bases here.

But right now its early days

Rats, I am gonna miss the convenience of Trek on Netflix, it’s by far the most user-friendly of the streamers, light years ahead of P+. What always bothered me, though, was the “thumbnail” and “preview” for TOS – while other shows have carefully-crafted promos to hook you in, TOS had a poorly-formatted and boring clip from The Cage. Also all the thumbnail images for the episodes are of people, often very boring shots, which to me doesn’t seem very intuitive, considering a sci-fi show like Star Trek is often identified for its sci-fi imagery. I’d rather see a Gorn, the Fesarius, the Tholian Web in the thumbnail than some generic conference room still of the crew. It really feels like the people at Netflix have no idea how to make Star Trek look appealing.

I hate that DS9’s thumbnail on P+ is the only one that doesn’t feature the captain.

Man, I have Netflix almost just for the Star Trek content.

I would have no problem with this if Paramount+ had a better user interface. At least their streaming capacity is better these days.

One of the reasons my physical DVDs and BluRay are not going anywhere. I have ripped all my discs to hard drive, so it’s pretty convenient to watch Trek (and my other faves) as and when without having them suddenly disappear off the streaming services I subscribe to. But nothing beats physical media when it comes to picture and sound quality, which is still far better than anything ripped or available on streaming.

Actually very happy that they are finally starting to go exclusive to Paramount Plus. This makes getting a subscription a no brainer now as a diehard Trekkie. It was hard to justify subscribing year round to basically just to watch one show (because no new Trek overlaps, and during Covid there’s been big gaps). It also has Twilight Zone and old Trek, but I also had Amazon for those, and I get so much more on Amazon.

If Paramount Plus eventually becomes the exclusive home for Trek (and likely TZ too at some point)– and they now add the Paramount movie catalog, and make more new originals, it becomes all the more easier justify the $10 a month on top of Amazon (the only service I currently have)– or even to cancel Amazon entirely.

I am considering Disney Plus too at some point, but probably not until next year, when Hawkeye, Moon Knight, Ms Marvel, and Secret Invasion have released. Right now i’m happy to drive to my father’s place and watch those shows with him (which has been a nice tradition during Covid).

I was planning to start watching all of Star Trek on Netflix this weekend, which will take several weeks to complete. I’m outside the US, I just hope I have time to watch it all before they remove it here too.

So many Streaming Sites to choose from and all have a cost. I’ve Netflix and Disney+ and I am happy with these two. They have everything I need. But when Paramount+ goes international I am considering adding it to my list.

I’m glad I dropped Netflix 4 years ago. First they dropped MASH, then they dropped Cheers and now Star Trek. Netflix isn’t worth it any longer.

I think that Netflix will be losing the DC shows soon as well. Well, I still like Netflix’s documentaries, the The Toys that Made Us and the Movies that Made Us.

To be fair, they aren’t dropping Star Trek, the license holder — Paramount in this case — is pulling the show from Netflix for their own platform.

Glad I still have my DVDs and Blurays of everything.

So I’ll go back to the downloaded copies. Paramount+ or whatever they’ll call it next is ridiculous garbage.

My favorite shows are leaving I see it all the time

It’s not that disappointing because I have all the episodes of the first two series my favorites, which means now I will have to get the rest, which I had planned to do, anyhow!

Is the same happening on Netflix in Canada?

The shows are on BellMedia’s Crave in Canada.

Would be nice if we got some of the other TREK series streaming on PLUTO TV (owned by ViacomCBS) All we get is the THE NEXT GENERATION and it’s the same handful of episodes over-and-over!

Will this apply to Netflix UK (where we don’t have Paramount+)?

Not that big a deal. I have TOS discs and two seasons of Enterprise. Only DS9 would be a bit annoying as I am waiting (possibly forever) for DS9 on Blu ray. I don’t rely on streaming if it is something I want to see more than once.

I subscribed to Netflix 10 years ago, then I sold my Star Trek DVD collection. I may hold on to the subscription until they drop TNG and DS9, but I will definitely be unsubscribing from Netflix because of Star Trek.

Netflix is steadily becoming not worth the monthly fee

The date is set: Netflix and Star Trek are done

The end of an era...

Deep Space Nine

Ever since the launch of its own streaming service, Paramount Plus, Paramount has slowly been reclaiming its shows and pulling them off rival streaming platforms.

One of the longest goodbyes has been to the plethora of the company's Star Trek shows and movies, which have existed on other streaming platforms for almost a decade.

Netflix has, at one time or another, had access to six Star Treks series, but Paramount has slowly drawn them back, one by one. This started all the way back at the end of 2019, with the departure of Star Trek : The Animated Series, which was followed in October 2021 by the exit of the original series, Star Trek: Enterprise, and Star Trek: Voyage. Then, in April of this year, Netflix subscribers said goodbye to Star Trek: The Next Generation , and now, the last of the shows has an end date.

That one remaining show is Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, which is finally leaving Netflix on July 2, a full decade after it first appeared on the platform.

Deep Space Nine ran between 1993 and 1999 with 176 episodes across seven seasons. The show starred Avery Brooks, René Auberjonois, Terry Farrell, Cirroc Lofton, Colm Meaney, Armin Shimerman, Alexander Siddig and Nana Visitor.

It followed the adventures of the crew onboard Deep Space Nine, a spaceship stationed near an outpost right next to a stable wormhole on the far reaches of explored space.

Set in the 24th century, the crew are under the command of Captain Benjamin Sisko, who has been given a mandate to protect a planet named Bajor and the station from any unwelcome visitors. But, after they discover the wormhole (which is, naturally, a shortcut through space that leads directly to uncharted territory), Sisko and his crew have their work cut out trying to keep on top of all the hostile nasties that keep turning up.

One of the best reviewed Star Trek franchises, with 91% on Rotten Tomatoes , Deep Space Nine's departure truly is the end of an era for Netflix, which will soon find itself without Star Trek for the first time in 10 years.

What about internationally?

For now, all of the shows, with the exception of Star Trek: The Animated Series, remain on Netflix internationally.

However, with the imminent launch of Paramount Plus in the UK and mainland Europe this summer , we strongly suspect that this isn't going to be the case for much longer.

That said, Paramount Plus launched in the US in March of 2021, and it has taken over 18 months for the network to slowly reclaim the rights to the various different Star Trek shows, so their departure from Netflix internationally is unlikely to be imminent.

Still, if you're a Netflix subscriber internationally and you want to work your way through the Star Trek seasons, we'd recommend getting a shift on (or waiting for Paramount Plus, of course...).

Netflix Internationally Clings On To Classic Star Trek As They Leave Netflix US

Kasey Moore What's on Netflix Avatar

Star Trek: Voyager – Picture: ViacomCBS

Netflix in the United States saw all of its classic Star Trek series depart on October 1st as the licenses came up for renewal and ViacomCBS opted not to renew. That’s not the case for those outside of Netflix US with international regions still managing to “Klingon” to all the previous series (just in case the pun in the headline didn’t make you groan already.)

For those out of the loop, there were a myriad of news articles surrounding the removal of all the classic Star Trek shows from Netflix. It came as part of Netflix’s PR release for what was leaving Netflix in October 2021 .

As always though, the media often slants its coverage to favor the United States which led to a lot of confusion over the fact all of the classic Star Trek series were listed to be removed.

We’ve not included the Star Trek shows in our respective leaving soon lists for Canada, the UK, or Australia because removal dates never were displayed.

Star Trek Titles Remaining On Netflix Internationally

Star Trek titles remaining on Netflix internationally

Now, we can confirm, that the Star Trek titles leaving Netflix only applied to Netflix in the US where the series has now moved over to Paramount+. Many of the titles also remain on Hulu and Amazon Prime Video as of October 1st, 2021 too.

As it now stands, Netflix outside of the United States continues to have access to:

  • Star Trek (1968 – 3 Seasons)
  • Star Trek: The Animated Series (1973 – 2 Seasons) which departed Netflix US in December 2019
  • Star Trek: The Next Generation (1993 – 7 Seasons)
  • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1999 – 7 Seasons)
  • Star Trek:: Voyager (2000 – 7 Seasons)
  • Star Trek: Enterprise (2004 – 4 Seasons)

Netflix internationally also carries Star Trek: Discovery exclusively and is labeled as a Netflix Original. A fourth season is set to debut this November 2021.

While this is a victory for those outside the United States, it may not last forever. ViacomCBS is planning to expand its streaming platforms abroad (including Sky Showtime in Europe for instance) so it’s likely Netflix will lose these shows at some point but sadly, we do not have any dates as to when that will be.

Top 10 Data moments from Star Trek: The Next Generation

In between almost scuppering the wedding of his friend Keiko to Transporter Chief O’Brien, and helping foil a Romulan plot, Data takes dance lessons from Dr. Crusher. A natural – if alarmingly vigorous – tap dancer, he struggles with the ballroom moves. But it’s all good – Data learns a lot about human social interactions. And, best of all, he involuntarily smiles.

CRUSHER: I’ll show you. I’ll lead. Now, you’ll notice that I don’t just repeat the same pattern over and over. I improvise. Now you lead. That’s good. Now, look up, Data. Look into my eyes. You’re holding me too tight. DATA: This is a very complex set of variables to coordinate, Doctor. CRUSHER: You are doing fine. Now, smile. Act like you’re enjoying yourself.

8. “Captain” Data tears Worf a new one (Season 7, Episode 5)

With Picard apparently vaporised and Commander Riker caught up with tomb robbers down on a desert planet, the mantle of captain falls on Data’s robo-shoulders. It’s another acting masterclass from Spiner, as he has Data doing what a machine would do: learning through mimicry. So, throughout the double episode, fans are treated to Data’s very subtle impersonation of Picard, from the way he orders to make things so to tugging the front of his uniform. But, as he tackles the Romulan threat with aplomb, the finest moment is when Data, following Worf’s persistent grumbling over Data’s decisions, calls the Klingon into the ready room. Worf might be a 7’ lumpy-faced killing machine, but Data is the boss. Although, touchingly, he’s concerned he might have lost Worf as a buddy.

DATA: If you do not feel capable of carrying out this role, I will assign it to Commander La Forge and return you to Tactical. I would not enter it into your record as a reprimand, simply as a transfer. WORF: I would prefer to remain at my current post. DATA: Then I expect you to conform to the guidelines I have laid out. WORF: Aye, sir. DATA: Dismissed. Mister Worf, I am sorry if I have ended our friendship.

7. Data experiences laughter (Season 3, Episode 13)

Widely regarded as the best Star Trek ending ever, but not because the hateful Q materialises on the bridge playing the trumpet accompanied by a sombrero-wearing Mexican band, nor because the all-powerful space god makes two swimsuit models appear, stroking Riker’s chest. Let’s face it – that’s awful. But the writers redeem themselves with a sudden moment of pathos. Q bequeaths Data a gift: Laughter. As with all things Data, watching him succumb to a burst of uncontrollable laughter isn’t just funny, it’s moving, too.

GEORDI: Data, why are you laughing? DATA: I do not know. But it was a wonderful feeling.

6. Data Gets Too Radical for the BBC (Season 3, Episode 12)

Analysing the history of armed insurrection, Data concludes that “terrorism is an effective way to promote political change”. Airing at a time when the UK was still experiencing violence from the IRA, the BBC censored the show – not least because Data mentions the “Irish reunification of 2024”.

DATA: Would it be accurate to say that terrorism is acceptable when all options for peaceful settlement have been foreclosed? PICARD: Data, these are questions that mankind has been struggling with throughout history. Your confusion is only human.

5. Data and Spock discuss what it is to be human (Season 5, Episode 8)

While aiding Ambassador Spock in his covert quest to reunite the Vulcans and the Romulans, the pointed-eared sage engages Data in a thought-provoking conversation about what it is to be human. Praising Picard as “remarkably analytical and dispassionate, for a human”, Spock considers there to be an “almost a Vulcan quality to the man.” This puzzles Data, for whom Picard is a “role model in my quest to be more human.” Spock, expressing what passes for surprise in a Vulcan (he slightly raises an eyebrow), muses: “Fascinating. You have an efficient intellect, superior physical skills and no emotional impediments. There are Vulcans who aspire all their lives to achieve what you’ve been given by design.” But, as it turns out, it’s not just Data who’s given food for thought. Why, asks Data, has Spock, half-human, chosen to deliberately shut out half of his biological make-up?

DATA: As you examine your life, do you find you have missed your humanity? SPOCK: I have no regrets. DATA: ‘No regrets.’ That is a human expression. SPOCK: Yes. Fascinating.

4. Data on trial for his freedom (Season 2, Episode 9)

In an episode that frequently pops up in fans’ Top 10 episodes, Measure of a Man is a Data-centric episode that marks the moment when, in the eyes of the Federation and not just his friends, he is acknowledged as a sentient being. Close-minded and ambitious cyberneticist Maddox requisitions Data for research, hoping to build more androids in Data’s image. In a formal hearing, Picard successfully argues that Data satisfies two out of the three criteria Maddox himself stipulates for sentient life: the android is self-aware and intelligent. And no one can come up with a way of testing whether any of them experiences consciousness. Touching on monumental issues like free-will, slavery and existentialism, this is Star Trek at its best.

PICARD: (As part of his final summing up) Are you prepared to condemn him and all who come after him to servitude and slavery? Your Honour, Starfleet was founded to seek out new life. Well, there it sits. Waiting. You wanted a chance to make law. Well, here it is. Make a good one.

3. Data in a deerstalker (Season 2, Episode 3)

Silly but immensely fun, this holodeck-set episiode sees Data take on the role of that most famous of sleuths Sherlock Holmes. As Data is able to solve the mysteries in seconds flat, Geordi orders the computer to come up with an adversary capable of beating Data. Taking Geordi at his word, the computer creates a super-Moriarty, an AI with the knowledge that he is a simulation. This leads to a moral conundrum as, told he doesn’t truly exist, Moriarty argues that he has life just as Data does.

DATA: The game is afoot! Come, Watson!

2. Cain and Abel – Star Trek style (Season 7, Episode 1)

Data’s evil twin, also played to perfection by Brent Spiner, gets his comeuppance at the hands of Data, but not before tempting his brother with the chance to become fully human like him. Choosing to end Lore’s life, Data is left with his emotion chip – will inserting it change who he is as a person? The answer, as we discover in the movie Star Trek: Generations, is yes. And it makes him swear, too.

LORE: I’m willing to forget about what happened back there and take you with me. We don’t need anyone else. We’re brothers. I’ll give you the chip our father made. It contains much more than just emotions. It has memories. Memories our father wanted you to have.

1. The Ode To Spot (Season 6, Episode 5)

Long before computer-written poetry was a reality, Star Trek: TNG imagined how an artificial human might go about it. Data’s verse in honour of his cat, Spot, is amongst the show’s best writing. The awfulness of the forced rhymes are a joy – “talents” with “counterbalance”! – and, as you’d expect from an android, the ode is heavy on factual information but bereft of the essential ingredient of poetry: emotion. Or is it? As with everything Data does, it’s strangely touching. “You cannae change the laws of metaphysics…” says no one. Missed a trick there, writer dudes.

The Ode to Spot, by Lieutenant commander Data of the USS Starship Enterprise

Felis catus is your taxonomic nomenclature, An endothermic quadruped, carnivorous by nature; Your visual, olfactory, and auditory senses Contribute to your hunting skills and natural defenses. I find myself intrigued by your subvocal oscillations, A singular development of cat communications That obviates your basic hedonistic predilection For a rhythmic stroking of your fur to demonstrate affection. A tail is quite essential for your acrobatic talents; You would not be so agile if you lacked its counterbalance. And when not being utilized to aid in locomotion, It often serves to illustrate the state of your emotion. O Spot, the complex levels of behavior you display Connote a fairly well-developed cognitive array. And though you are not sentient, Spot, and do not comprehend, I nonetheless consider you a true and valued friend.

Star Trek: The Next Generation is available on Netflix UK, as part of an £9.99 monthly subscription.

Star Trek viewers shocked as ‘most despised character’ ever returns

author image

A picture of Wil Wheaton as Wesley Crusher in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Star Trek viewers seem to have finally embraced a character who was once dubbed the franchise’s ‘most despised’.

First introduced in Star Trek: The Next Generation , Wesley Crusher has always been played by actor Wil Wheaton , first appearing on screen when he was just 15-years-old .

During that spin-off, he appeared over 85 episodes between 1987 and 1994.

He then returned to Star Trek in 2002 and 2022, reprising his role in cameo appearances in Star Trek: Nemesis, and in the season 2 finale of Star Trek: Picard.

The son Beverly Crusher and Jack Crusher, Wesley was not well received by fans of the franchise, which clearly affected the actor.

Will, now 51, once shared that when he was younger, people gave him ‘such a hard time about Wesley Crusher’ that there was a time in his late teens and early twenties when he ‘resented Star Trek’.

Wesley Crusher in Star Trek: Prodigy.

‘It felt so unfair that people who had never met me were so cruel and hateful toward me as a person because they didn’t like a character I played on a TV show, I wanted to put Star Trek behind me and forget that it was ever part of my life.’

However he’s now made a return again but this time around fans have been far more welcoming.

After a cameo during Star Trek: Picard season 2’s finale last year, he recently featured in the animated series Star Trek: Prodigy.

In the episode titled The Devourer of All Things, Part 1 he surprised viewers when popping up, and they were pretty excited.

Star Trek viewers shocked as 'most despised character' ever returns

‘I never thought I would say this, but we need more Wesley Crusher!’ one fan posted on X.

‘When I was young, I thought Wesley Crusher was annoying…now that I am old and wise, I realise he was cool,’ someone else shared.

‘We were all disappointed that Wesley Crusher wasn’t in #StarTrekPicard season 3 after he cameoed in season 2’s finale. Thank the Travelers #StarTrekProdigy had something way better in the works!’ another added.

The tenth Star Trek series, Star Trek: Prodigy was created by Kevin and Dan Hageman and premiered in 2021.

A picture of Wil Wheaton

It is the first to specifically target a younger audience, and the franchise’s first solely 3D animated series.

It follows a group of young aliens in the 24th century who find the abandoned starship Protostar and learn about Starfleet and also features the voices of Brett Gray, Ella Purnell and Jameela Jamil.

Kevin recently told Screen Rant that others seemed ‘afraid to touch’ Wesley and ‘bring the character back’, but they weren’t deterred.

‘I’m like, “Let’s do something great with him. Let’s make him a wonderful mentor, but a little scatterbrained and a little untrustworthy”.’

The Gates McFadden Star Trek: The Next Generation Episode That Was So Hated One Country Banned it

The High Ground saw Data utter a dialogue that hit too close to political sensibilities in Northern Ireland.

Gates McFadden, Star Trek: The Next Generation

  • Initially released in January 1990, The High Ground saw Dr. Crusher being kidnapped on an unfamiliar planet.
  • It included a dialogue from Data which referenced a crucial political event in Ireland.
  • As a result, the episode itself was banned in the country, and edited in the UK.

Some of the greatest works of fiction across books, TV, and movies hold a lot of subtext very relevant to the actual world. That is also true for Star Trek: The Next Generation, which gave fans plenty of characters that have since become iconic. While the series, which spanned for 7 seasons from 1987 to 1994 is mostly hailed positively, one particular episode invoked a ban in Northern Ireland due to one particular dialogue.

A still from Star Trek: The Next Generation | company Paramount Domestic Television

The episode in question is The High Ground, which was the 12th of the third season. It was aired on January 27, 1990, and included a line that referenced the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) and the ‘re-unification of Ireland in 2024.’

This The Next Generation Episode was banned in Northern Ireland

Brent Spiner played Data in Star Trek

The High Ground was initially released in the US in January 1990. It came at a time when Northern Island was fraught with violence between British loyalists and Irish nationalists who wanted a united Ireland. The sectarian violence resulted in thousands of deaths and meant a constant state of riot in the region.

The episode itself saw Dr. Crusher, portrayed by Gates McFadden, being taken hostage by insurgents engaged in a power struggle on a non-federation planet. Brent Spiner’s Data is seen talking about a range of terrorist methods that the Enterprise could make use of in order to save Dr. Crusher.

He ended up citing a range of examples, which also included the “Irish Unification of 2024.” The sheer sensitivity surrounding the topic brought forth an outright ban in Northern Ireland and a similar situation in the United Kingdom. As the episode was released in the UK in November 1992 ( BBC ), it was edited and the specific comment was changed.

The episode would then not air on the BBC in 2007, and then was never aired again, despite the original dialogue being taken out. Further, it was not shown on any Irish networks in any form, an attempt to not incite further violence at a time when the IRA consistently pressurized Northern Ireland to gain independence from the United Kingdom.

Several tragedies were related to this period, and the prediction of such a unification simply hit too close for comfort for the Northern Ireland government.

Writer Melinda Snodgrass was stunned by the controversy surrounding The Next Generation’s The High Ground

Brent Spiner in a still from Star Trek: The Next Generation

The Next Generation’s Data had cited this supposed unification of Ireland in 2024 as an example of when terrorism represents an effective way of accelerating political change. However, the writer of the script, Melinda Snodgrass ( via Looper ) claimed that the message she wanted to convey was considerably different:

I was a history major before I went to law school and I wanted to get into that; discuss the fact that one man’s freedom fighter is another man’s terrorist. I think what I wanted to say was: if we’re talking and not shooting, we’re in a better place.

Snodgrass claimed that she did not want to promote, or justify violence in any way, and could do nothing by the time she realized the controversy had developed:

We became aware of it later … and there isn’t much you can do about it.

Simply put, Snodgrass wanted Data to convey how any guerrilla warfare attempt to retrieve Dr Crusher would in itself represent an act of terrorism for the other side, despite what was at stake.

The Next Generation is available to watch on Amazon Prime.

Star Trek Just Changed a Classic Next Generation Era Team for the Better

Star Trek: Prodigy goes deep into Star Trek lore to redefine one of the most infamous Starfleet groups.

USS Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation

This Star Trek: Prodigy article contains spoilers.

Starfleet Academy might be a school for the best and the brightest of the Federation, but it is still a school, complete with its cliques and bullies. That’s what the kids of Star Trek: Prodigy learn in the first episode of the animated series’ long-awaited season two premiere.

Now in the Alpha Quadrant after escaping the Delta Quadrant and the evil Diviner, the Prodigy kids are now on Earth and hoping to gain acceptance to Starfleet Academy. That application gets a boost when Admiral Janeway brings them aboard Voyager for a mission to find the lost Chakotay . But as Voyager ‘s Doctor (once again voiced by Robert Picardo) escorts the kids to their stations, they run into a trio of haughty pre-cadets, who sport fancy insignias.

These three pre-cadets hope to become members of Nova Squadron, a once-forgotten unit that has gotten a lot of attention lately. Certainly, ’90s Trek fans should be very familiar with the significance of this reference.

Ad – content continues below

Viewers first met Nova Squadron way back in “The First Duty,” one of the most memorable episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation . Written by Ronald D. Moore and Naren Shankar and directed by Paul Lynch, the season five episode “The First Duty” finds Picard visiting Starfleet Academy and checking up on Wesley Crusher. He learns that Wesley has joined the elite group of pilots known as Nova Squadron, but has also come under scrutiny after one of their members died under mysterious circumstances.

Wesley knows that the cadet died because the Nova Squadron was practicing the Starburst Maneuver, a dangerous configuration that was banned by Starfleet. The Squadron attempted the maneuver under the influence of Nick Locarno , the son of a powerful Admiral. Wesley initially falls in line with the other members of the squadron, omitting the truth, until Picard delivers one of his best speeches, lecturing the young Crusher about a Starfleet member’s first duty.

After “The First Duty,” Locarno was reimagined as Tom Paris for Voyager , but Nova Squadron fell into obscurity. At least until the Squadron returned in the most recent season of Star Trek: Lower Decks , bringing Locarno back with it.

Throughout the fourth season of Lower Decks , a mysterious ship collects lower deckers of various ships. In the final episodes, Mariner discovers that the ship is piloted by Nick Locarno, who wants to form his own Starfleet of the overlooked people. Although motivated by his own hubris, Locarno claims to want revenge for what happened to Nova Squadron.

Although the show does name-check the Cerritos, Prodigy has different plans for Nova Squadron than either Lower Decks or TNG . Most of this new group stays quiet (which is shocking given that one of them is a Lurian— Morn would never shut up), but Vulcan member Maj’el (Michaela Dietz) does play a major role in this season.

Maj’el goes with the Prodigy kids through time on their search for Chakotay. Not only does her devotion to logic help give order to the kids when they’re in disarray, especially encouraging the sometimes erratic Dal, but she embarks on a romance with the Medusan Zero.

But Nova Squadron’s best moment comes later in the season, when a massive ship under the command of Asencia and Drednok fires upon Voyager. The young Nova Squadron, with Dal among them, jumps into their fighter ships and gives fans a sequence more common in Trek ‘s longtime rival Star Wars .

Get the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!

This version of the Nova Squadron has some commonalities with Locarno’s group, particularly a hot-shot attitude that makes them daring pilots. However, they also show a key quality that Locarno never understood. This Nova Squadron possesses a selflessness that drives them to sacrifice their own safety for the good of others. They understand the first duty of Starfleet Officers, a duty to the truth and to the principle that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

The addition of Nova Squadron to Prodigy continues the show’s look at Starfleet from the outside. As the kids cling to the hope of inclusion that Starfleet and the Federation promise, Nova Squadron presents a warning for the most ambitious among them (read: Dal) that being the best of the best can have its dark side.

Star Trek: Prodigy season two is now streaming on Netflix.

Star Trek Is Boldly Conquering Streaming

Posted: July 9, 2024 | Last updated: July 9, 2024

<p>In order to really appreciate how and why Star Trek re-used the Crossfield starship design, you need to know a bit more about the franchise re-using various vessel designs over the decades. In The Original Series, for example, the D7 Battlecruiser was introduced as a Klingon ship design before shamelessly being re-used as a Romulan vessel. Speaking of The Original Series, it’s not a coincidence that Kirk kept running into other Constitution-class ships: such plots allowed the show to re-use the Enterprise model as needed instead of designing something else entirely.</p><p>The same logic applies to interior sets as well: look closely at the Delta Flyer bridge in Voyager and you’ll notice that it’s actually the same bridge as the Defiant from Deep Space Nine. Parts of the Engineering set from The Next Generation were used (ironically enough) to create the Engineering room in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Regarding that film, if you take a closer look at the Federation president’s office, you’ll notice that it’s actually just the Ten Forward set from TNG.</p>

The beloved TV series Star Trek debuted on NBC on September 8, 1966, and almost didn’t make it beyond its first season. A total of 79 episodes were filmed, with the last episode concluding its filming on January 9, 1969. A three-year span of episodes was enough to syndicate the series, which continued airing on local TV stations across the country and maintained its status as a cultural icon. The show and all of its iterations remain a popular force with Star Trek streaming occurring on countless platforms, with Star Trek: Prodigy currently ranking on the Netflix top 10 chart in the UK, and Discovery climbing the Nielsen Ratings after its series finale.

Star Trek: Prodigy

Season 2 of Star Trek: Prodigy is proving to be a streaming success on Netflix. Like the original series in 1966, Prodigy almost didn’t last beyond Season 1. The animated series debuted in 2021 on Paramount+ and is made for a younger audience. Paramount+, though, didn’t order a second season. Netflix picked up the ball and carried it to Season 2’s recent successful debut on the streaming service.

Prodigy is currently ranked among the top 10 for kids shows in the U.K. and many other nations.

<p>Wisely, the Star Trek producer didn’t tell the sound team exactly how to do it, trusting instead that they would use his instructions to create the scariest sounds and worst vibes for audiences. This is now a scene that demands attention, and even if you just had The Motion Picture on as background noise, you’ll definitely have to look up when you hear these two officers being torn to death by technology. As a further edit, William Shatner’s original “oh my God” reaction (one which made people laugh in the theaters) was changed to him somberly staring at the tragedy that just happened.</p>

Decades On The Big Screen And Small Screen

The beloved sci-fi show eventually succeeded in transitioning from the small screen to the big screen in 1979 with the hit Star Trek: The Motion Picture. The timing for the debut Star Trek film was ideal given the recent success of Star Wars in 1977. Ten years of syndicated television airings ensured the potential audience was large and very familiar with each of the sci-fi show’s main characters.

Its sequel, Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan, has become a cinematic classic that spurred additional films, including a near-disaster in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, which fared so poorly that it nearly killed off the franchise.

Thankfully, that didn’t happen, and the film franchise rebounded with several new films, including one that introduced the world to a young Captain, James Tiberius Kirk, played by Chris Pine, and a young Spock, played by Zachary Quinto in a Star Trek prequel.

Bruce Horak as Hemmer on Star Trek: <a>Strange New Worlds</a>

The Franchise Is Constantly Expanding

Today, Star Trek streaming options are virtually endless with three new series in production and new films continually being considered or made. Current productions give us Strange New Worlds, the animated Lower Decks, and Prodigy. Star Trek: Picard streamed its third and final season in 2023. There have been 12 Star Trek television series made over the years, including the Next Generation, Discovery, and Deep Space Nine.

<a>Benedict Cumberbatch</a> and Zachary Quinto in Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)

A Legendary Cinematic Run

So far, 13 Star Trek films have been made, and Paramount intends to add three more for the Paramount+ streaming service. The new films include the in-production Star Trek: Section 31, starring Michelle Yeoh. Chris Pine also hinted he might play Captain Kirk once again in a new film, and an origin film might be made to give full disclosure on how Starfleet came into being.

<p>Also, in typical Star Trek: Discovery fashion, the finale left us wanting to see more of our favorite characters. Obviously, the writers didn’t originally know this would be the last season, but for every character who gets to shine, others get shafted. It’s cool seeing Burnham, Saru, Culber, and Booker getting big moments, but longtime fan faves like Stamets and Tilly are just sort of there.</p><p>That problem is particularly noticeable when you get to the final scene and Burnham is remembering her with the crew that became her family. It’s cool to see Owosekun and Detmer onscreen again, but these characters went from being essentially main characters early on to characters we barely saw in season five. Bringing them back for a non-speaking cameo at the very end just underscores how poorly they have been utilized the entire time.</p>

Discovery’s Delayed Viewing Success

With literally dozens of TV series and films already made and several more in the works, Star Trek dominates streaming for sci-fi films and programs. You’d be hard-pressed to find a streaming service that doesn’t offer one or more of the many films and series available, which ensures Star Trek will continue to live long and prosper.

Ask an Advisor: My Wife Claimed Social Security at 65. Can She Still Collect the Max Spousal Benefit?

The Sweet Reason Why Wil Wheaton Was 'Thrilled' To Return For Star: Trek Prodigy

The actor was ready for a return.

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 is now available with a Netflix subscription , and I believe it's the best serialized Trek story fans have ever been gifted. One major reason I think that is because the series brought back Wil Wheaton's Wesley Crusher in a big way. And, as CinemaBlend recently confirmed, this all came together before Picard ever re-introduced the character during its own second season. Now, we here at CB have learned the sweet reason why Wheaton was "thrilled" to be a part of the series after seemingly being forgotten by the franchise's shows after Wesley's exit in The Next Generation .

I had the honor of speaking to Prodigy 's showrunners, brothers Kevin and Dan Hageman, about Wil Wheaton's return as Wesley, who I hope we see more of in upcoming Trek shows . As those who have watched the season know, Wesley plays the largest role he's had in a story since TNG , so I had to know how the actor felt about being involved in such a big way. Dan confirmed that the actor was as happy as I imagined he'd be, but the EP also revealed that there was a very personal reason for Wheaton's joy:

He was thrilled. He has a lot of strong feelings [about Prodigy] because he was a child actor and [being part] of a show that kids can watch. His nieces and nephews are huge fans and he would watch it with them and he loved watching it with them. When he found out he was going to be in it he was like, ‘I’m not going to tell them.’...they’re going to watch the show and he’s going to be sitting there beside them like, ‘Yep. I’m in it.’ That just tickled us to no end.

I went on a journey through Wil Wheaton's Tumblr to see if he'd posted about showing his nieces and nephews yet, but I wasn't able to see anything scrolling through. Of course, it's easy enough to imagine the thrill one might have being a child and seeing their uncle pop up on one of their favorite shows. I love that Wheaton gets to experience that joy, especially after dealing with Wesley-hating fans during his run on The Next Generation .

Wil Wheaton in Star Trek: Picard

Wil Wheaton is always good at speaking from the heart.

Star Trek: Prodigy pulls back the curtain back on what Wesley has been up to since joining the Travelers, and there's room to expand on it. My main focus is on hoping that Netflix renews the animated series for Season 3. However, I'd also campaign for a full-blown Travelers show or miniseries to be made and follow Crusher's exploits. Be it animated or live-action, that has the potential to be an awesome series I'd watch either on Netflix or with a Paramount+ subscription on day one.

If that isn't in the cards, how cool of Star Trek: Prodigy to make Wesley Crusher such a big part of the story? I hope that if Season 3 happens, he continues to pop up, as we're past due for another character in this universe with mystical powers. If Wil Wheaton's character becomes the new equivalent to Guinan or Q of this new era, that would be great.

In case it wasn't evident by now, Star Trek: Prodigy is worth streaming on Netflix. Season 1 is also available on the platform for those who have yet to tune in, and I'm hoping some Season 3 news will come along sooner rather than later.
