Pink mountain with still lake

White Clouds Trail Loop

A pink mountain overlooking a still, glassy lake.

The White Clouds Trail Loop is a majestic and fairly challenging 30-mile hike through Cecil D. Andrus-White Cloud Wilderness area, which is part of the Sawtooth Mountain Range outside of Stanley , Idaho. Named for Cecil D. Andrus, Idaho’s last Democratic Governor and famed conservationist, the park is a popular camping and recreation area due to its myriad sub-alpine lakes, limestone peaks, meadows, and streams. The loop trail can be experienced as a four day trek, or taken in leisurely as a day trip to one of the closer destinations. If you like lakes and water, this is the hike for you! There are so many clear, mountain lakes you will barely be able to keep track of them.

While most of the trail is well-maintained, it is important to keep in mind that some parts can be rather treacherous (the class four scramble, “Devil’s Staircase”, for instance) so be prepared to hike upwards of 10,000 feet of unmarked trail, and if you are doing the full loop, carry supplies for a four-day excursion. You will also want to attempt this mid-late summer or early fall, since snow and freezing temperatures can be an issue until early July (unless you are on skis!).

Overnight Camping or Day Trips

Fourth of July Creek Trailhead to Born Lakes or Boulder Chain Lakes

white clouds travel

This is a 8-10 mile Moderately Challenging trail with beautiful views and meadows, ending at Born Lakes or Boulder Chain Lakes, which are popular camping and recreation spots.

white clouds travel

Start at the Fourth of July Creek trailhead and continue up a slight incline. After 1.5 miles, you will reach a fork, where you have the option to turn right and go to Chamberlain Basin and Fourth of July Lake or to go left and go up a steep path. To get to Born Lakes, you will want to take the left at the fork to the top of the divide. Once you reach the ascent, you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of Antz Basin, a lovely valley with trees and meadows. Take it in, because the decline can be the toughest part of this trail, with lots of loose rocks and a steep incline (be prepared going back up). You’ll see the trail wind down to the first lake, and you can camp anywhere along the shore, however, the the Boulder Lakes Chain is a bit prettier, so if you have the energy, you might want to keep going a few more miles and camp there. Continue south past the main trail and up a rocky, less marked scramble (there are cairns along the way and usually footprints to guide you). You’ll have another great view of the rest of the lakes before descending down again.

You can camp anywhere in White Clouds without a permit and bring dogs or pack animals too. There are some great fishing spots where you can catch cutthroat or trout, but you will need a permit if you are looking to catch your dinner.

Fourth of July Creek Trailhead to Fourth of July Lake

This is a popular, moderate hike through forests and meadows and is quite a bit shorter than the hike to Born Lakes (about 3.6 miles to the start of the lake, so it can easily be done in a day). Unfortunately, due to forest fires a few years ago, this path is not as shady as it once was, but there are plenty of wildflowers to add color to your excursion. To get there, start at the Fourth of July Creek trailhead and turn right at the fork. You should get a great view of the lake at about 100 feet. Fourth of July Lake is very beautiful and sits between several mountain peaks, which makes it a great place to take in the majesty of the Sawtooths without the rigors of some of the more challenging trails. If you are up to it, you can continue on for a few more miles to reach Washington Lake, which is bigger but the trail is steeper and more rocky. Both lakes are great spots to relax, fish, bird watch, or camp.

Hiking the Full Loop

The White Clouds Loop Trail is an adventure few backpackers will want to miss out on, and is a fairly well-kept secret by locals in Idaho. During your 3-4 day trek you will pass through a variety of sub-alpine environments, including countless serene lakes bordered by jagged white peaks, with steams, meadows, valleys, and forests in between. This trail is highly recommended for its great views and diverse ecology.

Starting at Fourth of July Creek trailhead and heading towards the first main fork, hikers will have the option of experiencing the loop clockwise or counter-clockwise. Since most people go clockwise , this guide will follow that route.

white clouds travel

The clockwise route for the first day will take you through Antz Basin and Born Lakes, or further up to Boulder Chain Lakes. You will want to take the left at the first fork at the top of the divide, and go down to Antz Basin, which will lead you on to the first Born Lake. If you choose to have a lighter day, this is a great place to camp, but if you have the energy, you might want to keep going a few more miles and camp further up. The Boulder Lakes are breathtaking, but can be a bit challenging to reach. Continue south past the main trail and follow the cairns and footprints up the steep scramble. This is called the Devil’s Staircase, and it is so named for a reason. You’ll have a great view of the Boulder lakes at the top before descending down again.

Many people camp at Born Lakes for one night, or camp for two nights at Boulder Chain Lakes since it is so spectacular up there. This is where my sister got engaged.

white clouds travel

There are a lot of lakes to explore and nice scenery to take in at the Boulder Lakes. There really isn’t another good camping spot until Chamberlain Basin, which is another day-long hike to the south, so I would suggest resting up here. I have heard some people camp at Castle Lake which is about midway, but it can be difficult to find since there is not an easily accessible trail to follow.

The journey to Chamberlain Basin will lead you past meadows and winding streams and through old-growth forests with plenty of wildlife – even black bears occasionally. Past Willow Lake, one of the last Boulder Lakes, take a right at Little Boulder Creek Trail. Soon you will get to the very well-defined Chamberlain Lakes trail (047), which will take you down and around Castle Peak.

white clouds travel

You will go up around the base of this mountain until you reach the top of Castle Divide where you can stop and great some views of this side of the mountain range. Continue downhill, until you reach the first Chamberlain Lake, then go north for another mile for great camping along the largest lake. This is a pretty long trip, almost 12 miles, so be prepared for a long day.

Castle Peak will be your friend and guide during this excursion, and you will end at the beautiful Chamberlain Basin for your third night.

white clouds travel

On your fourth day, you’ll have another 10-mile adventure ahead of you. Head back from the Chamberlain Lakes to the main trail and turn left. There are a lot of forests and shade here and and it is a fairly easy hike. When you get to the Germania/Washington Lake trail, take this trail up until get to your old friend, the Fourth of July Creek Trail. You’ll go up on an incline, and then back down past Washington Lake (another popular camping spot) and back to the trailhead. Sadly, much of this area has been destroyed by recent forest fires (as of 2021), so this probably won’t be the most epic part of the trip. The good news is there are still a lot of wildflowers to see, and you can grab a beer in Stanley or Ketchum when you get back to civilization.

The Boulder Chain Lakes are an amazing backpacking destination located in the heart of central Idaho’s White Cloud Mountains. This string of alpine lakes is highly scenic and surrounded by rugged ridges and peaks. The lakes can be accessed via a long trail approach from the east. Or a shorter but more adventurous option starting at Fourth of July trailhead to the west. The latter requires cross-country travel, including a climb of the ominous Devils Staircase above Boorne Lakes. For this trip, we went with the adventurous option. I’d was invited to join in on a 3 day trip with a group of guys from church, and had been looking forward to it all summer. We left town about 5am, made a breakfast stop at the Stanley Bakery, and started hiking just after 10am. From the trailhead, we climbed gradually to Fourth of July Lake for a nice warm up. Then the trail got steeper as we climbed to Antz Basin Divide. We paused here to soak in the amazing views, although a little smoky. Next up was the steep descent into Antz Basin, and on to Boorne Lakes. We took an extended break at the first Boorne Lake, resting and checking out the views. Most of the attention was on our next obstacle, Devil’s Staircase. To say there was some skepticism about the route would be putting it mildly. But we continued onward nonetheless. To reduce rock fall danger while in the staircase, we split into smaller groups. Since I’d climbed the route before, I led the first group about halfway up, trying my best to encourage them. When they were most of the way up, I motioned to the next group to start the climb. When the final group started, they were 2 guys short. Turns out they’d elected to just stay at Boorne Lakes instead. Not an ideal situation, but unfortunately that’s the way it went. Once finished with the staircase, moods improved, but we still had ground to cover. We crossed the bench to my favorite tarn, over to Windy Devil, then down the switchbacks to Scoop Lake. Hummock Lake was our planned destination, but there were already two other groups camped there, so we stayed at Scoop Lake, which ended up being a great basecamp location. The next morning, we fished and lounged for a while. A group of us headed down the trail to explore and fish at Hummock, Hourglass, and Hidden Lakes. It was a good time, and next we went back up to Scoop for lunch and more lounging and talking. Later, several of use made the climb up to Lonesome Lake to try our luck fishing at what is arguably the highest lake in Idaho. Unfortunately, we didn’t see any fish, but it was still fun exploring. That night we prognosticated about whether not the forecasted snowfall would come, and it even snowed briefly. But during the night, skies cleared up and we awoke to no snow on the ground. Plus, some of the forest fire smoke had left as well, so good conditions all around. After breakfast, we broke camp. Some of the guys decided to hightail it back to the trailhead, but the rest of us took a more leisurely pace. We made the climb up to Windy Devil, then I took a few minutes to soak in the views of cloud shrouded Castle Peak from my favorite tarn. We made our way carefully down Devil’s Staircase, then lunch break at Boorne Lakes. Later, views of the northern White Clouds were fantastic as we crossed Antz Basin, thanks to the smoke leaving. After the steep climb back up to the divide, it was all downhill back to the trailhead, and a well-deserved meal in Stanley before heading home. It had been a great 3 day trip in the White Clouds. Round trip was about 18 miles and 5500’ elevation gain. Best of all was catching up with old friends, making new ones, and just enjoying each other’s company in general. Times like these are hard to beat.

Basic Facts Everyone Should Know About Clouds

  • B.S., Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology, University of North Carolina

Clouds may look like big, fluffy marshmallows in the sky, but in reality, they are visible collections of tiny water droplets (or ice crystals, if it's cold enough) that live high in the atmosphere above the Earth's surface. Here, we discuss the science of clouds: how they form, move, and change color.

Clouds form when a parcel of air rises from the surface up into the atmosphere. As the parcel ascends, it passes through lower and lower pressure levels (pressure decreases with height). Recall that air tends to move from higher to lower pressure areas, so as the parcel travels into lower pressure areas, the air inside of it pushes outward, causing it to expand. This expansion uses heat energy, and therefore cools the air parcel. The farther upward it travels, the more it cools. When its temperature cools to that of its dew point temperature, the water vapor inside of the parcel condenses into droplets of liquid water. These droplets then collect on the surfaces of dust, pollen, smoke, dirt, and sea salt particles called nuclei . (These nuclei are hygroscopic, meaning they attract water molecules.) It is at this point—when water vapor condenses and settles onto condensation nuclei—that clouds form and become visible.

Have you ever watched a cloud long enough to see it expanding outward, or looked away for a moment only to find that when you look back its shape has changed? If so, you'll be glad to know it isn't your imagination. The shapes of clouds are ever-changing thanks to the processes of condensation and evaporation.

After a cloud forms, condensation doesn't stop. This is why we sometimes notice clouds expanding into the neighboring sky. But as currents of warm, moist air continue to rise and feed condensation, drier air from the surrounding environment eventually infiltrates the buoyant column of air in a process called entrainment . When this drier air is introduced into the cloud body, it evaporates the cloud's droplets and causes parts of the cloud to dissipate.

Clouds start out high up in the atmosphere because that's where they're created, but they remain suspended thanks to the tiny particles they contain.

A cloud's water droplets or ice crystals are very small, less than a micron (that's less than one-millionth of a meter). Because of this, they respond very slowly to gravity . To help visualize this concept, consider a rock and a feather. Gravity affects each, however the rock falls quickly whereas the feather gradually drifts to the ground because of its lighter weight. Now compare a feather and an individual cloud droplet particle; the particle will take even longer than the feather to fall, and because of the particle's tiny size, the slightest movement of air will keep it aloft. Because this applies to each cloud droplet, it applies to the entire cloud itself.

Clouds travel with the upper-level winds . They move at the same speed and in the same direction as the prevailing wind at the cloud's level (low, middle, or high).

High-level clouds are among the fastest moving because they form near the top of the troposphere and are pushed by the jet stream.

A cloud's color is determined by the light it receives from the Sun. (Recall that the Sun emits white light; that white light is made up of all the colors in the visible spectrum: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet; and that each color in the visible spectrum represents an electromagnetic wave of a different length.)

The process works like this: As the Sun's lightwaves pass through the atmosphere and clouds , they meet the individual water droplets that make up a cloud. Because the water droplets have a similar size as the wavelength of sunlight, the droplets scatter the Sun's light in a type of scattering known as Mie scattering in which all wavelengths of light are scattered. Because all wavelengths are scattered, and together all colors in the spectrum make up white light, we see white clouds.

In the case of thicker clouds, such as stratus, sunlight passes through but is blocked. This gives the cloud a grayish appearance.

Five stunning fairytale castles around the world you can visit this summer

W e've all grown up with a clear image of the 'perfect fairytale castle' thanks to a lifetime of reading fairytales and watching Disney princess films.

Fortunately, there are plenty of castles around that seem straight out of a fantasy. Luxury travel company Oliver's Travels have identified which of the 75 most visited castles worldwide tick all the boxes for a fairytale castle.

According to their formula, the perfect 'fairytale castle' must be in an elevated position, have multiple turrets, tall and pointy turrets, a multi-layered roof, a non-symmetrical facade, an ornate gateway, and be in a remote or unique location - with five European castles topping the list.

Hochosterwitz Castle , Austria

Perched dramatically on a 160-metre-high rock in Carinthia, Austria, Hochosterwitz Castle is a true fairytale castle. It's said to have been the inspiration for Disney's Snow White castle, reports the Mirror .

Regarded as one of Austria's most impressive medieval castles, Hochosterwitz boasts dramatic architecture with multiple looming turrets and winding fortified walls. The castle's first recorded mention dates back to 860, and since then it has faced numerous sieges, raids, and attacks.

In the 16th century, Hochosterwitz Castle was bought by the Khevenhuller family who transformed it into the enchanting fairytale castle we see today. Since their modifications, the castle has remained largely unchanged and in the possession of the Khevenhuller lineage.

The closest airport to Hochosterwitz Castle is Klagenfurt, accessible via a flight from London Heathrow.

Hohenzollern Castle, Germany

Perched high above Germany's Swabian Jura mountain range, Hohenzollern Castle boasts intricate designs, towering spires and sharp turrets.

Often referred to as the 'castle in the clouds', its elevated position means it's frequently enveloped by the misty aura of the Black Forest - a sight that truly cements its status as the ultimate fairytale castle.

Three castles have occupied the grounds of Hohenzollern Castle. The first, erected during the Middle Ages, was destroyed in 1423 following a year-long siege. A second castle was then constructed, only to be ruined in the 1700s after suffering damage during the Thirty Years' War and the War of the Austrian Succession.

The third and current castle was commissioned by Crown Prince Frederick William IV of Prussia, who enlisted architect Friedrich August Stuler to design the magnificent palace.

The castle that currently stands on the site, although severely damaged on 3 September 1978 due to an earthquake causing several of its turrets to collapse, is Hohenzollern. The castle, now privately owned by the House of Hohenzollern, underwent repairs until the mid-90s.

Stuttgart is the nearest airport to Hohenzollern, and a short train ride from the city will take you to the castle.

Lichtenstein Castle, Germany

Situated along Germany's 'Fairytale Route', Lichtenstein Castle was transformed into the breathtaking Gothic palace we see today when Count Wilhelm von Urach purchased the ruins of a medieval castle. Following the Revolution of 1848, he was elevated to Duke status.

The modern castle, whose construction began in 1842, showcases pointed arches, slender spires, and intricate detailing typical of a fairytale castle. Its dramatic and precarious location further enhances its storybook feel.

Prince Wilhelm Albert, a descendant of Duke Wilhelm von Urach, currently owns the stunning castle.

Leipzig, Dresden, and Prague are the closest airports to Lichtenstein Castle.

Mont Saint-Michel, France

Mont Saint-Michel, nestled on a rocky island off the Normandy coast, is a quintessential fairytale castle. Surrounded by expansive tidal flats, it exudes an aura of magic and mystery when the sea encircles it during high tide. It is rumoured to be the inspiration behind Disney's Tangled Castle.

The story of Mont Saint-Michel began in 708 when Saint Aubert, the bishop of Avranches, was visited by the Archangel Michael in a dream, who asked him to construct a sanctuary on the island in his honour.

Over time, the castle has transformed and served various functions. Initially a monastery, it was fortified during The Hundred Years' War to protect against English invasions. After the French Revolution, the island became a prison, often referred to as the 'Bastille of the Seas'.

Remarkably, Mont Saint-Michel remained largely unscathed during the Second World War, and has since evolved into a popular tourist spot, with UNESCO recognising it as a World Heritage site in 1979.

Rennes is the closest airport to Mont Saint-Michel.

Neuschwanstein Castle, Germany

Believed to have inspired Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle, Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, Germany, attracts over 1.4 million visitors annually due to its fairytale-like features.

It sits dramatically on a rugged hill overlooking Alpsee Lake, making it seem as if it has leapt straight out of a storybook.

Commissioned by King Ludwig II, known historically as 'the fairytale king' or 'the mad king', Neuschwanstein Castle was influenced by the architecture of Wartburg Castle in Eisenach and Chateau de Pierrefonds in France, as well as the operas of Robert Wagner.

After King Ludwig's death in 1886, the castle's construction was halted and it was opened to the public just seven weeks later.

Neuschwanstein Castle's nearest airport is Memmingen. The castle can also be reached from Munich.
