MLB Draft: Will Okemos' Caleb Bonemer become Greater Lansing's highest-ever draft pick?

Caleb Bonemer will soon have a better gauge of what his baseball future could look like.

The Okemos star shortstop and University of Virginia commit is expected to be among the top 100 picks in the Major League Baseball Draft, which starts at 7 p.m. Sunday (MLB Network, ESPN) with the first and second rounds and continues through Tuesday.

Bonemer, who was named Michigan's Gatorade Player of the Year for the second straight season last month, is expected to be picked Sunday evening or Monday afternoon at the latest. 

Whenever he hears his name called, Bonemer will be the first player from Greater Lansing to get selected in the draft since 2017 when Portland's Tanner Allison and Holt's Jesse Heikkinen were both drafted. Bonemer could also become the second high school player in Greater Lansing to be taken in the first 100 picks and join Owosso's Mitch Zwolenky, who went in the fourth round with the No. 98 overall pick in 1978.

Bonemer is ranked by MLB Pipeline as the No. 71 prospect in the draft. The first 74 picks will take place Sunday evening before the third round gets started Monday afternoon.

"Whatever happens with the draft or Virginia — either way I see it as a great opportunity," Bonemer said. "I'm just looking forward to keep playing the game. As long as I try to get better every day I think everything will take care of itself. Either way — professional baseball or Virginia — you can't go wrong with either one."

Following the draft, Bonemer will have to decide before the end of July whether to sign a contract to begin his professional journey or opt to go the college route and play at Virginia, which went 46-17 and reached the College World Series this year.

"He's prepared for the next level," Okemos coach Raul Presas said. "I don't know what his decision is going to be and whether it's going to be pro baseball or going to the University of Virginia. He's not going to go wrong with whatever he decides. That decision lies with him and his family, but he's prepared for the next level regardless of what path he decides to take."

Bonemer is one of two high school players from Michigan ranked among the top 100 prospects. Outfielder Dante Nori, who helped Northville win a Division 1 state title last month and was named the state's Mr. Baseball by the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association, is ranked No. 48.

"It's sweet because usually when you think about drafting high school talent you think about the West Coast and you don't really think about up here in the Midwest," Nori said last month about the attention he and Bonemer have attracted. "To bring that talent here and put us on the map — it's something special."
