What’s the best time to visit Baltimore?

Given the climate of the city, the best time to visit Baltimore would be mid-September or that month’s second half. The summers are pretty hot and humid, which is not always easy to bear but this can also cause some spectacular lightning storms. Winters can get pretty cold and snowy, although that tends to range wildly from mild winters to real blizzards. Spring is also a nice time to visit, but expect more rain than in autumn.

However, the weather is not the only thing you should consider. There are plenty of interesting events, too. Artscape , the biggest festival of free arts in the country, takes place every July, food festivals are also very common, especially in the last six months of the year, plus there are festivals celebrating each of the various cultures living in this great city. For example, this is the city in which Francis Scott Key wrote the American anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner. Start your day with an incredible breakfast

Wondering what to do in Baltimore? Well, given that you only have one day here, the best choice is to start your day in and then explore the Inner Harbor . This is the very heart of the city, the part where a huge number of attractions is located and from where you can easily get to other notable areas of the city.

But first, you need to get some energy for the day ahead of you. Past the eastern part of the harbor (Little Italy) and along Aliceanna Street, you’ll find Baltimore’s Blue Moon Cafe . With only the freshest ingredients, Blue Moon serves a heavenly breakfast, along with great coffee (or other beverages), of course. Pancakes, omelets, sandwiches… they are all prepared in a huge variety of ways, so you really shouldn’t miss out on eating here.

Visit the aquarium

OK, so now you’re ready. There are many places to visit and things to see here, but the number one Baltimore attraction is the fantastic National Aquarium . It has a huge shark tank, a 4-D theatre, a huge coral reef and quite literally thousands and thousands of animals. Set aside a couple of hours for this and you really won’t regret it. This is the place that attracts the most tourists in the whole state, for a very good reason.

Check out the historic ships

One of the reasons Baltimore Inner Harbor is such a hit among tourists is the fact that it’s home to four historic ships. Well, three ships and a submarine. And yes, you can climb aboard and inspect each of them! Buying tickets for more than one ship will give you a discount, while the visit to the lighthouse is free.

Go on a pirate cruise!

If you still haven’t had enough ships, you will want to book a Baltimore pirate cruise. Yes, a pirate cruise! It’s a kid-friendly attraction too, but if you’re in adult-only company you can book a tour where you bring your own grog. You get your pirate costume, a pirate beard will be drawn on your face and it’s all really fantastic fun. After a bit of sailing around the harbor, you’ll be able to continue your tour of Baltimore.

Eat at one of Baltimore Inner Harbor restaurants

Yes, there are plenty of things to do in Baltimore Inner Harbor, but there are many great restaurants you should try, as well. Pratt Street Ale House is just west of the harbor and it offers juicy burgers and other types of sandwiches which are all complemented beautifully by some mighty fine beer ( local craft products included ).

If you want something more elegant, Watertable is in the heart of the harbor with a spectacular view. They serve American cuisine along with some very delicious seafood. Bistro 300 is very close by, and it’s a great place for a quick but delicious bite. In any case, the selection of Baltimore Inner Harbor restaurants will not disappoint you because there is something for everyone here.

Head to Maryland Science Center

What to do in Baltimore after lunch? Well, stick around Inner Harbor (told you there was plenty to do here) and go visit Maryland Science Centre . It is a truly remarkable place covering everything from human anatomy to astronomy. Oh, and don’t forget that you can touch a real dinosaur skull, a find more than 100 million years old. And not only do they have fascinating and interactive exhibits, but there is also a Kids Room here, too.

Climb to the top of the world

For a spectacular view of the city and its skyline, head to the World Trade Centre and climb to its 27th floor . There you will find Top of the World, an observation deck from which you can view the harbor and beyond. It is particularly impressive if you come here in the evening when the sun sets and the city lights up below you. For just a few dollars, it seems well worth it.

Free things to do in Baltimore

Don’t worry if you don’t have that much to spend when you visit Baltimore because there are some great free things to do here, too. You can attend various events, guided tours and even get free transportation if you know where and when to look. Here are some examples that can make your Baltimore sightseeing much more affordable:

• Canton Waterfront Park hosts free concerts every first Thursday of the month, from May to September. Good music is accompanied by snacks and various beverages, so this is a great way to spend some time soaking in the city’s vibe
• The Walters Art Museum charges no entrance fees ! Simply go in and take a look at their special exhibitions or standard exhibits, some of which go back to 5000 B.C.
• Want to learn more about the Inner Harbor? Free guided tours are readily available there.
• If you’re looking for a way to get around town, hop on the Charm City Circulator . It’s an environmentally friendly, hybrid bus whose task is to take tourists to all major Baltimore attractions. For free, of course.

Sure, you can also hop on a bus or get a car, but the point is – it’s very close and it’s a great choice for your day trip from Baltimore. Explore another great US city, soak in its culture and learn about its amazing history. The White House, the Capitol, Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument… that’s just a fraction of what awaits you.

Just 30 minutes away, Annapolis is by far the prettiest town in the state of Maryland, quite possibly and beyond. It is actually the state’s capital, but it only has about 40,000 people. Still, the history in this place is quite amazing, and if you want a slow and relaxing day of walking through cobblestone streets or tasting great food and drinks in charming restaurants and bars, Annapolis is simply perfect.

We first visited Baltimore in in our young adulthood and visited many times when we lived nearby in Washington DC.. During our time here, we fell in love with its fun Inner Harbor and many unique neighborhoods.

Whether you're a traveling as a family, a couple, or a backpacker, this city has a lot to offer. Any local will tell you what makes it special is the fantastic museums and spectacular food.

Baltimore, Maryland is a popular destination for its impressive aquarium and fun Inner Harbor. The city is filled with diverse neighborhoods and many different museums. There are historical ships that highlight the city's maritime past. There are also many excellent restaurants that let you sample the local seafood from the Chesapeake Bay.

4 Reasons to Visit Baltimore

The city is known for its historic ships that are found in the Inner Harbor. There are many other museums around town as well like the American Visionary Art Museum, the Reginald F. Lewis Museum, and the Baltimore Museum of Art. Many days can be filled exploring the many art, history, or science museums in the area.

Shopping is a great way to experience the different neighborhoods around town. For high end shopping head to Harbor East. For a bit more history check out Federal Hill. Hampden is known for its quirky style and Fell's Point is particularly popular with tourists.

The weather in Baltimore is fairly warm during summer, and stays around 25°C (78°F). But it can get as warm as 31°C (88°F) at times, too. It's also quite rainy during this season, so be prepared.

The peak season for travel is summer in Baltimore, so expect to see more tourists than usual. This destination is quite popular with tourists, and in the high season it's even busier than usual as this is when most people like to visit. Expect crowds to be large, and prices to be a bit higher than normal. However, there's plenty to do here this time of year, too.

9 Awesome Things to Do in One Day in Baltimore

Baltimore is the perfect day trip from Philadelphia or Washington, D.C. (or anywhere in between), and there’s so much you can see in a day! I grew up in Maryland going to Baltimore for family trips or field trips as a kid, and I finally went back for a day trip from Philadelphia . If you’re planning a day trip, these are my top 9 things to do in one day in Baltimore! 🙂

Guide to one day in Baltimore

Visit Fell’s Point

I love seeing historic neighborhoods when I travel, and Fell’s Point was so pretty! It was quiet and charming, and I had some great food there, too. It’s right outside of downtown Baltimore , so it’s easy to get to and spend an hour or two walking around (and eating).

Tour Little Italy

Little Italy is one of the most famous parts in Baltimore. I didn’t get a chance to eat here the last time I went, but you know Little Italy has some pretty great food! It’s a quaint part of town, and I love how they have street signs in Italian and fire hydrants painted the colors of the Italian flag.

See Mount Vernon and the George Peabody Library

Mount Vernon is a beautiful part of town! I loved the historic architecture, and there are lots of shops and restaurants. Plus, the George Peabody Library is in Mount Vernon, and it’s one of the most beautiful libraries in the world! The library alone is worth a visit to Baltimore.

See Edgar Allan Poe’s grave

Edgar Allan Poe is a famous Baltimore resident, and he’s buried at a church in downtown Baltimore. He actually didn’t have a marked grave for many years, but today he has a monument and some plaques with information about his life and writings.

Tour the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum

I actually didn’t know that Babe Ruth was born in Baltimore. But he was born and raised in Baltimore until he was recruited, and you can visit his birth place and museum in Baltimore! They still have the same furniture and everything that Babe Ruth would have had as a child, even the same bed he was born in. They added a museum onto the house, so you can learn all about his famous career!

Catch a game at Camden Yards

Camden Yards is, coincidentally, right near Babe Ruth’s home. If the Orioles are playing, you should watch a game!

Walk along the Inner Harbor

Can you really say you’ve been to Baltimore if you don’t see the water? The Inner Harbor is open with pretty views of the water and city! You can take a boat ride if you want, but just walking along the water will give you some good views! The Inner Harbor is a popular spot, so most of the restaurants are your typical touristy restaurants so I recommend going elsewhere for food (I recommend Fell’s Point !).

See sea creatures at the Baltimore Aquarium

I didn’t go to the Baltimore Aquarium this trip because I had been so many times as a kid, but the aquarium is great! And you can definitely fit it in for one day in Baltimore. You can see some really incredible wildlife, and you have connections, you can try to go swimming with the dolphins like my little brother tried to when he was a toddler!

Eat crab cakes

Did you really experience Baltimore if you didn’t have crab cakes? Crab cakes are a Baltimore necessity! There are lots of great places to get crab cakes so you can’t really go wrong (just don’t go to a chain restaurant on the Inner Harbor), and I got a pretty great crab cake sandwich at Penny Black in Fell’s Point.

If you just have one day in Baltimore, you can still see a lot of amazing sights! Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. have a lot of amazing things to see and do (and eat), but make sure you take time to check out the sights in Baltimore when you’re in the area!

15 Things to Know Before Visiting Baltimore, MD

From the neighborhoods to the history to the arts, there’s more to Baltimore than meets the eye. There’s much to love about Charm City, but it can be a lot to process all at once for first-timers. Here’s our rundown of the 15 things you need to know before visiting Baltimore.

Birthplace of “the star-spangled banner”.

In 1814, Francis Scott Key was in Baltimore when the British attempted to capture the city during the war of 1812. As he saw the flag fluttering in triumph at nearby Fort McHenry, he penned what would become the United States national anthem. Baltimore has since embraced this legacy in its official slogan.

Crabs, Old Bay®, and Natty Boh are king

The signature flavors of Baltimore are crab, Old Bay® Seasoning , and National Bohemian “Natty Boh” beer. Because Maryland is the biggest distributor of blue crabs in the country, Baltimore, as its port city, will put crab meat in pretty much anything. But while Old Bay® often goes with crab, it’s a Baltimore staple in its own right, often sprinkled on fries, wings, and more. Natty Boh, first brewed in Baltimore in 1885, is no longer made in its home city, but 90% of National Bohemian sales to this day are from Baltimore, its mustachioed mascot a symbol of the city.

Bigger than the Inner Harbor

While the Inner Harbor is a major attraction for visitors, there’s so much more to explore when you’re visiting Baltimore. You’ll find arts and culture all over the city, not to mention great restaurants and bars, parks, and historical landmarks. So don’t waste the trip in just one area.

City of neighborhoods

Instead of districts, Baltimore is split up into about 200 neighborhoods. While many are purely residential, each has its own history and personality, with great restaurants and attractions to offer. Weather more Northern than Southern

While Baltimore is technically a Southern city, just under the Mason-Dixon line, the weather falls more in line with the Mid-Atlantic or Northeast, meaning hot and humid summers and cold, wet, and blustery winters. It does tend to warm up a little faster than Pittsburgh or New York in the spring, but like their springs, you could still get snow as late as April.

Easy to get around

There are a number of ways to get around while visiting Baltimore, many of them affordable. The Charm City Circulator and Harbor Connector water taxi are free transportation services that stop in many popular neighborhoods of southern Baltimore. There’s also the Baltimore Water Taxi, with more stops and an all-day pass at a decent rate. Lesser-known methods are the subway, which runs from Johns Hopkins Hospital to Owings Mills, and the light rail, which runs from BWI Airport to the suburbs. For cyclists, the city has a bike share program, plus protected bike lanes along main roads.

Baltimore, once called “The Monumental City,” was for years an important commercial center and gateway to the west, and its historical landmarks stand as proof of its lasting legacy. Home to the original Washington Monument, America’s first cathedral, the B&O Railroad, historic ships from the Civil War and World War II, and much more, there’s a lot to learn from Baltimore about the history of the United States.

Lots of cool people come from Baltimore

Baltimore has produced amazing athletes, artists, writers, and more, and pays tribute to them throughout the city. You can visit Babe Ruth’s Baltimore birthplace as a museum . Edgar Allan Poe, who grew up in the area, also has a museum in his name and is buried in Westminster Burying Grounds. Billie Holiday has a mural dedicated to her in her old neighborhood of Fell’s Point and musician Frank Zappa has a bust and a city holiday in his name.

Baltimore is Birdland

Baltimore is dedicated to its sports teams, which, because of their winged mascots, has earned them the nickname “Birdland” or “Birdtown.” All over the city, you’ll find a number of establishments sporting Orioles orange-and-black or Ravens purple – sometimes both! Add in Johns Hopkins University’s famed lacrosse team, the Blue Jays, and you’ve got a regular birdhouse.

Rowhouses rule

While rowhouses can be found in other U.S. cities, Baltimore has the most rowhouses of all of them. Baltimore rowhouses span multiple styles and eras, often with marble steps and their own colorful Charm City flair. For particularly beautiful rowhouses, walk around Charles Village or Abell to see the eye-popping “Painted Ladies.”

Baltimore loves its movies

Baltimore has served as the setting for a number of great films – Sleepless in Seattle and Diner come to mind, not to mention John Waters’ body of work. But Baltimore also has a deep appreciation for film, with independent movie houses like The Charles and The Senator , both open since 1939, and Bengies Drive-In , open since 1956. It also hosts the Maryland Film Festival every year and a number of outdoor film festivals in the summer.

Charm City is host to a vibrant arts culture, with great art museums like the BMA, Walters Art Museum, and the American Visionary Arts Museum as well as Artscape, the largest free arts festival in America. Home of Hon culture

“Hon,” short for “honey,” is not exclusive to Baltimore, but the city has turned it into a way of life. A callback to ’50s-’70s working-class neighborhoods such as Hampden and Canton, Hon culture is characterized by plastic flamingos, cats-eye glasses, beehive hairdos, and a particular accent. Once seen as tacky, John Waters, Cafe Hon, and HONFest have helped residents and newcomers celebrate this quirky part of Baltimore. Though there’s disagreement on whether it’s respectful or not, Hon culture is a reflection of the charm of Charm City.

Historic public markets

Baltimore’s public market system is the oldest continuously-running market system in the U.S., with Lexington Market, established in 1782, its oldest market. Other notable markets include Broadway Market, Cross Street Market, and the more recent R House. There’s also plenty of farmers’ markets to visit in the warmer months, including the Baltimore Farmers’ Market & Bazaar.

Stay vigilant

While no place is completely free from danger, civil unrest and crime have unfortunately made Baltimore one of the most dangerous cities in the world. Mount Vernon has seen a recent increase in crime, and the intersection of McCulloh Street and West Preston Street is a major danger zone. But some areas are better than others, such as Hampden and neighborhoods around the harbor, or Federal Hill, whose overall crime rate is 3% lower than the national average. So do your research and be watchful, especially after dark, and you can have a great time visiting Baltimore.

In fact “Bawlmer” has something of a gritty reputation helped in part by HBO’s acclaimed crime-series “The Wire” which for many, put the city on the map. However, just take a peak beneath the surface and visitors will find a vibrant place fast growing into itself.

Balti has a lot going for it. It offers a world class aquarium, legendary sea-food and some great dive bars. Other  things to do in Baltimore  include Civil War-era monuments, harbour cruises and trips out into the beautiful state of Maryland.

But what if you want to get off the tourist trail, off the beaten track, to find some of the more weird and wonderful,  unusual things to do in Baltimore ? Baltimore’s historical credentials aren’t exactly a hidden secret, but that doesn’t mean lapping it all up isn’t worth your time. Spoiler alert: it totally  is  worth your time. One of the best things to do in Baltimore, then, if history is the thing you’re looking for, is to take a peek at Fells Point.

This colonial harbour-side area is, as you might expect, pretty charming stuff. Here you get to wander around cobbled streets with old gas-lamps, lined with centuries-old brick townhouses. It’s not all history though, as it’s probably the most ideal spot to try out Baltimore’s famous crab .

2. Wander around the city’s farmer’s market

If you’re anything like us, chances are you’ll enjoy both eating and looking at food. Baltimore’s Farmers Market & Bazaar is a good place to do both of these things; you can pick up a load of fresh produce, from fish and meat to cheese and bread. You can also pick up handmade clothing and other organic goods.

Located in Saratoga Street, get here in the early morning for the best pick of the fresh goods here. Make sure to fuel up with a coffee or alternative caffeine fix first, though!

Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon is an elegant neighbourhood located just north of downtown. It is the cultural centre of the city and is where you’ll find an excellent selection of institutions and attractions, like the Walters Museum of Art and Tony Charles Street.

3. Spend the morning at Union Collective

Union Collective is a one-stop-shop for a load of fun stuff. Imagine a place where you can get to grips with a climbing wall, good food and plenty of shopping opportunities. Sure, you may be thinking, “um, that’s a mall” but this place is more than a mall. Set in a repurposed, former industrial building, this is more like a community hub with a ton of great perks.

Since it’s all inside, we guarantee that this one of the best things to do in Baltimore when it’s raining (which could happen, let’s be real here). You can visit a brewery. Then go for ice cream afterwards. How is that not awesome?

4. Eat your way around Mt. Vernon

Named after a general of the American Revolution, Mt. Vernon became a multi-ethnic community after 1812, helping it to become the interesting area that it is today. Accordingly, you’ll find everything from Afghan cuisine and Turkish kebabs, to Chinese dumplings and dim sum, all amidst grand buildings, museums and great views of the city.

Mt. Vernon is an intriguing, historic insight into Baltimore’s multicultural background. It’s a good spot for foodies and architecture buffs alike. Make sure to spot the Monument to Washington as you explore .

5. Wander around the hipster ‘hood of Hampden

Another of the city’s diverse neighbourhoods, trendy Hampden is worth a trip if you’re looking for hipster things to do in Baltimore. Centred around West 36 Street, it’s here that you’ll find a whole cocktail of cool boutique, vintage shops, interesting art galleries, dive bars and indie record shops.

Once a working-class mill town, Hampden is now the hipster epicentre of Baltimore. You should definitely visit if this is your sort of thing; it’s very easy to make a day of it here, with many cafes and restaurants to keep you fuelled as you amble around. Keep your eyes peeled for street art daubed on the sides of buildings.

6. Sample the city’s breweries

Like a lot of other North American cities, the craft beer craze hasn’t left Baltimore untouched; in fact, the city has a pretty highly rated beer scene. If you’re an enthusiast, or if you just want to drink some beer, having a peek at some of the city’s breweries is a very good idea and one of our favourite things to do in Baltimore when we’re there.

Interestingly, this is the only place in the whole of the USA that was deemed worthy enough to play host to its own Guinness Brewery. If you like the sound of a glass or two of the dark stuff, you should make a beeline here. Other breweries are available, though, such as Heavy Seas , or still smaller setups like Diamond Back Brewing, and Waverly.

7. Go Skiing

You probably didn’t even consider the possibility of skiing when you’re in Maryland’s biggest city, but actually, it’s one of the best outdoors-y things to do in Baltimore. All you have to do is hop on the Baltimore Ski Bus at Pennsylvania Station. You will then be whisked all the way to Liberty Mountain.

Get a lift ticket and hire some equipment at the resort and enjoy a day on slopes; whether you’re an experienced skier hankering for some powder, or if you’re a beginner hitting the slopes for the first time, it’s perfect for an adventurous day away from the skyscrapers.

Of course, this is a seasonal activity.

8. Take a trip to the American Visionary Art Museum

When it comes to unusual, off the beaten track things to do in Baltimore, they don’t get more unique than the American Visionary Art Museum. It might say “Art” and it might say “Museum”, but trust us: it’s not your regular art museum. This place is oddball zaniness at its best.

Located at the Baltimore Inner Harbour, this place is all about outsider art – self-taught artists whose work allows you to see the world from very different perspectives. On display, you’ll find interesting structures, like a 50-foot-high, wind-powered sculpture made by a 76-year-old farmer, and a 16-foot model of the RMS Lusitania  made out of toothpicks, amongst other things. A cool place to explore.

9. Pay your respects at Edgar Allen Poe’s Grave

You may or may not know the spooky tales and poems of Edgar Allen Poe; if you do, you’ll probably be quite interested to go on the hunt for his grave. Though born in Boston, it’s in Baltimore that he passed away in 1849, in strange circumstances – apparently, he was found wandering the streets “in great distress, and… in need of immediate assistance” and wearing clothes that weren’t his own. Weird.

Formerly buried in an unmarked grave, public pressure grew and eventually, his cousin erected a proper, marble monument to him. You can find his final resting place in Westminster Cemetery, which is on the southeast corner of Fayette and Greene Streets.

Baltimore doesn’t exactly have a history as being a “safe” city if crime levels are anything to go by and does suffer from gang and drug related issues. However, it is generally safe for visitors.

In the more touristed areas, like Fells Point, the Inner Harbour area, and even Hampden, you simply need to take the usual city precautions such as watching your belongings and being mindful of pick-pockets.

At night time, however, Baltimore does get a little more sketchy. You’ll have to watch out around ATMs after dark and stick to well-lit areas. It’s best to get a taxi rather than take public transport at night, too – especially if you’re by yourself or are unsure where you are headed. If you’ve hired a car, make sure you don’t leave any valuables on display and that you park in a safe place.

Another thing to watch out for: the weather. It can get super cold in the winter, with an average of 20 inches of snow and high winds. In the summer, thunderstorms can get heavy and sometimes delay flights. Be aware, be prepared, and you should be fine. Check out our roundup of  the best travel insurance .

10. Have a drink at The Horse You Came In On Saloon

The brilliantly named The Horse You Came In On Saloon is an old-school pub, basically, and it dates back to 1775. That’s old, people; in fact, it’s older than the United States of America, albeit only by a few years. Since opening, it’s been a bar. It’s never been anything else but a bar – even through Prohibition.

Needless to say, having a drink at this iconic spot is one of the best things to do in Baltimore at night. It’s a cool spot to find yourself in: there’s live music, Edgar Allen Poe haunts it (apparently), and the bar stools are made of saddles. We’re well into this one.

11. Go to a painting class

If you don’t want to drink and only drink, then another great thing to do in Baltimore at night is to hit up a painting class held by purveyors of fun, Yaymaker. This isn’t any regular old painting classes, but is more about getting to know some fellow travellers (or residents) with some creativity, socialising, and – if you like – a bit of drinking.

Check availability and book online if this sounds like your jam. Then make your way over to the Yaymaker venue in Federal Hill Park and you’ll be supplied with all the necessary tools to unleash your creative passions (including drinks).

12. Take a cruise around the harbour

One of the most quintessential things to do in Baltimore is to take a cruise around the harbour. It’s a must-do in the city, up there with sampling the famous Baltimore crab. It’s true. It’s a very popular way to spend your time in the city and for a good reason: the city looks awesome from the sea.

And if you’re here with your partner, going on a cruise around the harbour is a top thing to do in Baltimore for couples. Take a cruise, see the city from the deck, have some lunch, some drinks, enjoy some music – however you choose to embark on your cruise experience. Tip: Take a boat from Baltimore Inner Harbour .

13. Go for dinner in Little Italy

You may have already guessed, but Little Italy is a great place to go to chow down on some amazing food. Built-up from the 19th century thanks to Italian immigrants, Little Italy today is one of the best places in Baltimore to find, surprise surprise, tasty Italian food.

Here you can dine on oven-baked pizzas over candlelight, tuck into home-made meatballs, and stuff yourself with gnocchi. If you and your partner are rabid foodies, there’s no doubt that this is going to be one of the most romantic things to do in Baltimore. Sharing a meal together and a few glasses of wine: perfection.

14. Go to The Book Thing and find a new read

Easily one of the best free things to do in Baltimore: The Book Thing. It’s not a bookstore, it’s not a library, it’s a place where you can go pick up free books. “What’s the catch?” you’re wondering. Answer: there isn’t one.

Run by volunteers, The Book Thing is essentially a used bookstore where people donate their unwanted books. You can just walk in and take them: the people who run this awesome initiative just want people to read books. There are quite literally thousands to choose from (they’re stamped with “not for resale” though). Anyone who likes books, or free things, you’ll love it. Tip: it’s only open on weekends.

15. Visit the Walters Art Museum

Another amazing free thing to do in Baltimore is to browse the collections of ancient and not-so-ancient artifacts and exhibits the Walters Art Museum. Set in the historic Mt. Vernon neighbourhood, you can see things from 5000 BC on display here, and you can see things from the 21st century.

It all began when philanthropist Henry Walters donated his collection of art and artefacts to the city. Today that legacy carries on, with the free cultural hotspot available for anybody to come and learn a thing or two. Being set all inside (a very nice building), it’s a good thing to do in Baltimore when it rains. It’s closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, FYI.

16. Ride the waterside Carousel

Set along the waterfront in the city at National Harbor are a load of different things to do in Baltimore for kids. There are playgrounds and a whole load of other family-friendly fun that can be had to keep little ones entertained, if they need entertaining, that is.

The Carousel, for example, with its wooden horses and classic Americana vibes, is a 36-foot ride that is great for younger children. Snap some pics for some truly vintage feel memories from the city. Once you’re done whizzing around in circles, there’s plenty of parks to stroll around in and let off some steam.

17. Spend the day at the Railway Museum

What child doesn’t love railways and trains? It’s pretty much an obsession that hits just about every child for a few years from age 2 upwards, so to spend the day at an actual Railway Museum will be one of the best things to do in Baltimore for families.

Located in the historic Southwest Neighbourhood, in a Georgian-style building from 1851, this place tells the story of the railroad in the area. Ideal for kids (and train aficionados alike) you can ride the one mile train, explore the vintage roundhouse, and see displays of all sorts of engines and other train memorabilia. A great day out , if we may say so ourselves.

You’ve got a ton of things to do in Baltimore. That’s all well and good. But there are some pretty amazing things just on the doorstep of this equally amazing city that are both easy to reach and, well,  must-see  sort of places. Important cities practically litter this region of the United States, so we’ve shared a few iconic day trips from Baltimore to whet your appetite for further exploration.

Take the train to New York

You’re in Baltimore, which is cool, but New York City is just on the doorstep. If you weren’t planning to stay in NYC itself (because, you know, it’s expensive) then taking a day trip from Baltimore to this global megalopolis is a great idea. Get up early and get on the Amtrak train that’ll speed you directly to Pennsylvania Station in New York. Don’t worry about breakfast: you can have that on the train’s cafe car .

You’ll arrive in the Big Apple mid-morning. With only a day in the city, you’ll have a lot to pack in, so your best option is to take a hop-on, hop-off bus so you can hone in on the sights you want to see: observatories, theatres, museums, Times Square, Macy’s… . There’s a ton of stuff to do in New York, so it’s best to think about some of your bucket list activities and attractions before you head off.

Make a day of it in Washington

Not only can New York, New York be reached easily on the Amtrack, but so can Washington D.C. Another great US city, and – of course – the capital of the country, Washington is so full of history, Civil War heritage and a ton of grand, majestic buildings and monuments that going on a day trip from Baltimore to this interesting spot is sort of a no-brainer. It’s just an hour’s drive from city to city.

Once you’re in Washington D.C., you can hit up a load of fascinating sights connected to US history. Make your way to Fort Stevens, visit Fort Ward, learn about the life and times of the man himself at Lincoln’s Cottage, and see the Robert E. Lee Memorial. Have some lunch at Fort Myer Officer’s Club for the full experience of Civil War intrigue.

But fitting all of that stuff into your visit could be tricky, which is why we’ve come up with this handy 3 day Baltimore itinerary, just to make sure your schedule is packed with the best of the best – and runs smoothly, too!

Day 1 – History and Culture in Baltimore

Start your day off at historic  Fells Point for a wander around the brick buildings and cobbled streets of the harbour. We would recommend having some breakfast at  Blue Moon Cafe , a classic breakfast joint in the area, so you’re suitably fuelled up to get to grips with all the history going on here. After strolling Fells Point, hop on the CityLink bus and ride 25 minutes to  Mt. Vernon .

Another beautiful, historic area of town, Mt. Vernon is a historically multicultural area and comes complete with some multicultural eats for you to chow down on, too. One of the best spots you could head to in this area is  Mt. Vernon Marketplace – a food court where you can get anything from ramen or Korean food to burgers, crepes, oysters, tacos, and much, much more. A foodie’s dream, we’d say.

Decidedly full, it’s time to roll yourself from the marketplace 2 minutes to  Walter’s Art Museum . Set in a grand building, this place is open till 5pm – but is open till 9pm on Tuesdays, if you’re there then and feel like staying longer. Once you’ve seen enough art, we recommend dinner and drinks in  Downtown ; head to  HomeSlyce , a funky bar-slash-pizza joint that’s a lot of fun. You’ll love it.

Day 2 – Hipster Stuff in Baltimore

Start the most hipster of days in Baltimore with a trip to Baltimore Farmers Market & Bazaar . It’s a good time to grab yourself some breakfast, as there are plenty of food stalls and vendors to peruse and choose from here. There are a ton of places where you can pick up freshly baked goods and various blends and roasts of coffees from around the world. It’s great, in a word.

Once you’re done browsing the various wares of the market, it’s time to mosey on down to  Hampden . Ride the CityLink red bus for 28 minutes to arrive at Baltimore’s premiere hipster district, a once industrial area now crawling with enclaves of cool.  Celebrated Summer  is a renowned record store with a great inventory;  Roosevelt Park  is a good spot to hang out. Eat at The Food Market .

There’s even sometimes a market going on down  West 36 Street . Stroll around and explore, then it’s time to see the United States’ only Guinness Brewery . It’s a 22 minute drive away, in Halethorpe, so take a cab. Learn how it all works, then cab or Uber it back into town and continue with the drinking at  The Horse You Came In On Saloon . Get some bar snacks and say hi to the ghost of Edgar Allen Poe.

Day 3 – A Chilled Day in Baltimore

Union Collective  is as good a place as any to start off your third and most chilled of days in Baltimore. There’s a ton of stuff to do all under one roof; for the hungry, you can breakfast or brunch at  Vent Coffee Roasters . Hit up the climbing wall if you feel energetic enough to do so. Then choose between a 15 minute drive or 40 minutes on the bus and get yourself to Baltimore Inner Harbor .

It’s from this place that you can easily head out on a lunchtime cruise (one of the most quintessential things to do in Baltimore, we might add). Lap up the city skyline, eat some food aboard – maybe some Baltimore crab – and then you’ll find yourself back on dry land. Stroll along the waterside and then either have a look at, or ride (if you want), the carousel . It’s a landmark of the city and a picturesque spot.

From the Inner Harbor area it’s time to head to  Little Italy . This is a simple of a 15 minute stroll (just 3 minutes by car). Your dinner spot could be any number of great restaurants here, from  Sabatino’s Italian Restaurant  to  Chiapparelli’s Restaurant , or even  Germano’s Piattini . There’s loads. After, have some fun at Mustang Alley’s Bar, Bowling Alley and Bistro -open till 12am.

Situated in Charles Village, just north of the downtown area, the Baltimore Museum of Art claims the title of largest art museum in Maryland. Filled with more 95,000 art pieces, including an impressive Matisse collection, donated by Baltimore natives Claribel and Etta Cone, the museum draws art enthusiasts from across the globe. An entire Cone Wing of the museum is devoted to the sisters' spectacular repertoire of paintings from distinguished artists like Matisse, Picasso and Cézanne. Recent visitors praised the extensive collection, citing free admission to the world-class museum as a major perk.

The museum is also home to one of the largest Andy Warhol collections in the world and features European sculptures, African and Asian arts, and decorative arts. Since it opened in 1934, the museum has expanded into a total of three distinctive buildings. Featuring Renaissance paintings, Asian art, Byzantine and Ethiopian art, and an extensive Egyptian collection, among other works, the exhibitions offer a diverse selection of art styles. The Walters is also known for its medieval galleries, which include artifacts like suits of armor from the Middle Ages. The Walters Art Museum also offers a variety of family-focused programs, as well as free drop-in art activities from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, which allows little ones to participate in arts and crafts projects. Recent visitors praised the museum's comprehensive collection and stunning interior design.

Free walk-in tours are available for those who want a more in-depth look at the galleries. While the museum itself is free to the public, keep in mind special events and lectures may require an admission fee for non-members. Built in a retro style in the early 1990s, Oriole Park offers an authentic baseball game experience. The park features a well-kept field, abundant restaurants, beer, pretzel and hot dog stands, and beautiful views overlooking the city from the stands.

While detained on a ship in the Chesapeake Bay during a battle in the War of 1812, lawyer, poet and writer Francis Scott Key saw a flag of 15 stars and stripes soaring above the fray, signaling the Americans success in holding of a British naval attack. As the story goes, this sight inspired him to write the country's national anthem. Today, the site of the battle – and Key's moment of inspiration – is one of the most popular tourist haunts in Baltimore.

Admission to the general park area is free, but there is a $15 fee for visitors ages 16 and older to enter the historic star-shaped fort. At the Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, spectators can partake in a variety of programs, including the Fort, Flag and Fire! Ceremony every Saturday at 2 p.m. in July and August, which invites spectators to enjoy guided tours and even assist in the changing of the 42-foot flag. After the history lesson, relax on the grounds and enjoy a picnic with the family. Recent visitors said their favorite part of the tour was soaking in the scenic views of the water and brushing up on American history with "flag talks" given by highly informative park rangers.

Many of the attractions in Baltimore – including the  National Aquarium , the  Maryland Science Center , the  USS Constellation  and the major sports stadiums – are centered in the Inner Harbor. Since the 18th century, the Harbor has been one of the most important seaports in the country, with a prime position alongside the Chesapeake Bay. Apart from the surrounding sites, you can also spend the day walking around the area, taking in a street performance or exploring the shops and restaurants.

While some travelers cite the area as somewhat of a tourist trap, most agree that the scenic strolls and convenient location make it a must-see for any first-time visitor. The neighborhood serves as a great place to catch a water taxi, have a meal, and shop around. Plus, there are many summer concerts and events in the area.

This  Federal Hill  art museum, which was once a whiskey warehouse, beckons to those with eclectic tastes. Upon entry, visitors are greeted by a 55-foot-tall "Whirligig" wind-powered configuration, which sets the tone for the quirky art displayed inside. The American Visionary Art Museum exhibits explore a wide range of topics, including the impact of technology on everyday life, the power of story-telling, race and gender. Recent reviewers highlight the colorful, multi-dimension collection as appealing to adults and kids alike. They also appreciate the hands-on nature of many exhibits.

The museum opens its doors Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Adult admission costs $15.95; admission for children ages 7 and up costs $9.95; children 6 and younger can visit for free. The easiest way to access the American Visionary Art Museum is by walking south along Baltimore's Inner Harbor to Federal Hill. For some of the best views of the  Inner Harbor  and Baltimore skyline, head to Federal Hill just south of downtown. The massive hill was once used during the Civil War and the War of 1812 as a major lookout spot. Until recently, it was also known as Signal Hill, where flags of local companies were raised as their ships arrived into the harbor. Past visitors said Federal Hill offers the best view in the city.

You have two options for getting to Federal Hill's summit: stairs or rolling hill. If you prefer the stairs, head up the 100 stairs on the Battery Avenue side. Warren Avenue, on the other hand, doesn't offer any stairs, but boasts scenic hillside views. If you're in the city for the Fourth of July, this makes for a great spot to watch the fireworks.

Patterson Park Patterson Park free

A marble fountain, swimming pool, lake, pagoda and dog park can be found in this 300-year-old park, where locals and visitors congregate for seasonal events and concerts. The Pagoda atop Hampstead Hill – formerly called the Observatory – was built in 1890 and crowns the park, affording unobstructed city views. Recent visitors called this pagoda unique and worth a visit.

When you're not soaking up the scenery from the Pagoda, people-watching or joining other revelers for outdoor concerts, you can also take part of the activities held by the Friends of Patterson Park and volunteers, including bird-watching tours and gardening classes. On a clear day, rare bird types, such as the great blue heron and American goldfinch, have been spotted throughout the park.

Maryland Science Center Maryland Science Center

This 200-plus-year-old Maryland Science Center is one of the oldest scientific institutions in the country. Originally a meeting place for amateur local scientists to discuss papers, the museum has transformed into one of the most visited attractions of the  Inner Harbor . Boasting interactive exhibits for children, a planetarium for astronomy gurus, and giant dinosaur replicas for budding paleontologists, the museum offers plenty of activity for its visitors. Recent visitors said this attraction is fun for all ages, and they appreciated that the exhibits occasionally change for repeat visitors.

One of the most popular parts of the center is the IMAX theater, which shows a wide range of movies, from science-related flicks to more mainstream blockbusters. General adult admission prices to the museum are $24.95, and entrance to the IMAX theater costs $13.95 (for feature films). Discounts are available for kids ages 3 to 12, seniors and large groups. The Science Center is located off of Light Street along the Inner Harbor, and is easily accessible via the Charm City Circulator. The museum operating hours vary, depending on time of year. Generally, the museum welcomes visitors from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, with extended hours on Saturdays. Consult the museum's official  website  for its current hours.

USS Constellation USS Constellation

The USS Constellation, which is currently docked at pier 1 along the  Inner Harbor , was first launched in 1854 and has had a tenuous history throughout its active life. The last all-sail ship in the U.S. Navy, the Constellation once played a role in disrupting the slave trade and has seen duty in both world wars. Today, visitors can climb aboard and tour the decks and play the part of a 19th-century sailor.

Travelers report that youngsters (and the young at heart), particularly enjoy hanging out on the vessel, since there is much to see and do. Plus, recent visitors complimented the informative tour guides at the historic site. However, touring the ship might not be the best for those who can get a bit claustrophobic as some spaces are tight and can be tricky to navigate.

One of the most well-known attractions in Baltimore , the National Aquarium houses more than 20,000 animals. The aquarium revolves around a bottom-level, open pool, which is filled with stingrays and fish. Continue upstairs and you'll discover a wide variety of marine animals, before you encounter the humidity of the rainforest replica at the top of the building. Visitors can return to the first floor down a spiraling path, which is enclosed by a giant shark tank.

A very popular attraction at the aquarium is the "Blacktip Reef" exhibit, a $12.5 million space designed to model the elaborate Indo-Pacific reef system that displays 20 blacktip reef sharks along with 60 distinct species of fish, including zebra sharks, clown triggerfish and a 500-pound green sea turtle named Calypso. "Dolphin Discovery" – the aquarium's largest exhibit – is another highlight thanks to the seven resident dolphins that provide a glimpse into how these animals play and interact.

Step inside the this brick house-turned-museum on 203 Amity St., and you'll stumble upon a cornucopia of Poe pieces – from a telescope to a portable traveling desk – preserved from when Poe and his family resided in Baltimore from 1833 to 1835. The writer's former residence  – now a National Historic Landmark  – is also the location where historians believe Poe composed many of his famous poems and stories, including "MS. Found in a Bottle" and "To Elizabeth." There are also permanent and rotating exhibits that catalogue Poe's life, work and ties to Baltimore.

Recent visitors said the house was well-preserved, and they appreciated the knowledgeable and friendly docents. However, some were disappointed that the rooms were mostly empty and not filled with period decor.

Tourists flock to Baltimore for its lively Inner Harbor , amazing National Aquarium , renowned American Visionary Art Museum , beloved Oriole Park —not to mention its excellent seafood, easy proximity to D.C., deep historical significance, and rich cultural melting pot. Yes, “Charm City” lives up to its nickname. But is Baltimore safe?

Not for those living in its most crime-ridden areas—this East Coast metropolis consistently shows up on lists of America’s five most dangerous cities since its violent crime rate spikes way higher than the national average.

Much of the violence that plagues Baltimore’s worst neighborhoods is related to gangs and drugs. ( The Wire , a popular HBO series, depicts this semi-realistically.) More than 20 percent of Baltimoreans live in poverty , and the city holds the dubious distinction of leading the nation in frequency of robberies .

Unfortunate though that is for the people who live in these tough spots of Maryland, the reality for would-be travelers to Baltimore is mercifully brighter: Tourists who are here to visit the city’s main attractions are unlikely to be targeted by any sort of violent crime. Still, it pays to know how to conduct yourself while you’re in town, and also to study up on which are the safe parts of Baltimore—and, more importantly, which are the dangerous parts of Baltimore.

Tips for Baltimore Safety

• Do not venture into the worst neighborhoods in Baltimore—those that significantly elevate the Baltimore crime rate. These include Edmondson Village, Fairfield, the Monument Street Area, Orangeville, Greenmount East, Pulaski, Hopkins-Middle East, Berea, West Baltimore, Grove Park, Cherry Hill, Madison-Eastend, and Greater Rosemont. (Thankfully, popular tourist spots like Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and Fells Point remain relatively safe.)
• Understand that the safety of Baltimore neighborhoods can change quickly from block to block; even just crossing a few streets can put you in quite a different situation than you were just in. So look at a map to figure out exactly how to get where you’re going—before even heading out of your hotel. Ask a concierge if you need help mapping out your day.
• Beware of pickpockets anywhere you go in Baltimore: Don’t travel with valuables on you, stay alert and aware of your surroundings, and be skeptical if strangers try to distract you. But if someone actively tries to rob you, do not resist, since your physical safety should always be more important than your money or possessions.

Neighborhoods to Avoid in Baltimore

Before arriving, travelers should know how to stick to the safe parts of Baltimore—and the key way to do that is to know which neighborhoods to avoid in Baltimore, and also what types of situations to steer clear of here. For example, after dark, don’t go near dim or deserted areas, and be aware that muggings and other types of theft are common in downtown Baltimore at night.

The neighborhoods that have been instrumental in spiking the Baltimore crime rate include Edmondson Village , in the southwest part of town, as well as Fairfield, the Monument Street Area, Orangeville, Greenmount East, Berea, West Baltimore, Grove Park, Cherry Hill, Madison-Eastend, Greater Rosemont, and Hopkins-Middle East .

Prostitution is also a problem in Baltimore; the streets where prostitution-related arrests are most rampant include Garrison Boulevard, Wilkens Avenue, Dundalk Avenue, Harford Road, South Conkling Street, East Patapsco and Fairhaven Avenues, as well as the neighborhoods of Old Goucher, East Baltimore Midway, and Druid Heights.

Whether you’re navigating Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, Fells Point, or anywhere else in the city, there’s always a risk of being pickpocketed, so don’t travel with valuables on you, stay very aware of your surroundings, walk in groups in well-lit, non-desolate areas, be skeptical if strangers seem like they’re trying to distract you, and if someone tries to rob you, do not resist.

Other things to know about Baltimore safety: Don’t use an ATM unless its surroundings are well-lit. Don’t leave items within view in your car. Take extra safety precautions after dark. And know exactly how to get where you’re going so you don’t inadvertently wander into an unsafe neighborhood.

If you’re taking public transportation in Baltimore, stay on high alert, since crime is a problem on buses and trains and at stations, especially at night.

Both Uber and Lyft operate in Baltimore, and those services are as safe as they are anywhere else. if you do choose to hire a driver via your smartphone, remember that both services have a 911 button, as well as the ability to share the progress of your ride with a friend or family member.

When waiting for your ride in Baltimore, choose a busy, well-lit area. When your driver arrives, confirm that his or her face matches the photo that comes up on your phone and that the license plate matches the info in the app, then sit in the back seat, never the front. Also, refrain from telling the driver your name before getting into the car; instead, ask the driver for the name on the booking to make sure that this is the person who is on the record as being assigned to you.

The worst neighborhoods in Baltimore suffer from extreme poverty, which often results in young people becoming active in gangs, including those who have joined the notorious and extremely violent MS-13 gang , as well as other groups heavily involved in the illegal drug trade. (Drug overdoses have also spiked recently in Baltimore, especially among people who are addicted to opioids like heroin and fentanyl.)

In recent years, a new multi-agency federal force was put into place to try to tamp down Baltimore’s gangs and their violent drug-dealing ways. But poverty, inequality, and addiction remain massive roadblocks in lowering the Baltimore crime rate.

7 Reasons Baltimore Should Be Your Next Travel Destination

I moved to Baltimore in 2006, but I've had a long history with the city, visiting regularly when I was a partial season ticket holder for the Baltimore Orioles. Those not in the know about Baltimore previously saw it in one of two ways: as the poor cousin of Washington, DC or as that city you pass on your way to New York and Philadelphia .

But Charm City has a rich history, a vibrant sports scene, two world-class art museums, a touch of Hollywood — shows like House of Cards , Veep and The Wire have been filmed here — and a respected restaurant scene. It's also home to dozens of unique neighborhoods, including Fells Point, Hampden, Waverly, Canton and Federal Hill.

Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) offers more flights than Reagan National (DCA) or Washington Dulles (IAD) and thanks to international carriers Air Canada and British Airways, has one-stop flights around the globe. Here are seven ways to make the most of your time here.

1. It's Easy to Get Around

Like many large cities, Baltimore has Lyft and Uber , along with cabs, shuttles, public buses, subways and light rail to get you around the city. If you're planning to head an hour or so south for a DC day trip, a free airport shuttle can take you to the Amtrak and MARC commuter trains, while a DC Metrobus at BWI Airport will take you to the Greenbelt station on the Green Line will also get you to the nation's capital.

2. There's So More Than Just Crab Cakes

If you must have crab cakes, the best ones in Baltimore are at Faidley's in Lexington Market, a historic place that's been open since 1782 and is worth a visit in itself. For a taste of the city's iconic Maryland blue crabs, head to Capt. James Crab House in the city's popular Fells Point neighborhood. If you missed out while in the city, you can enjoy crabs and crab cakes at Obrycki's at BWI Airport — which also ships!

Beyond crabs, fans of Afghan cuisine can indulge at Helmand, an eatery owned by the brother of former Afghan president Hamid Karzai. You can also find southern Italian food and homemade pasta at Aldo's Ristorante Italiano in Little Italy, authentic Spanish food at Tio Pepe or great farm-to-table eats at Woodberry Kitchen, the brainchild of James Beard Award winner Spike Gjerde. Or go to Pete's Grille — a favorite of multiple-gold-medal Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps — for one of the best breakfasts in the city.

3. The Baltimore Aquarium Is Cheaper on Fridays

Baltimore's National Aquarium offers half-price admission every Friday after 5:00pm. Check out the Dolphin Discovery exhibit or the circular Shark Alley, home to different species that swim around you as you walk through. The Upland Tropical Rain Forest exhibit features plants and animals ranging from two-toed sloths to blue poison dart frogs.

4. You Can Walk in the Steps of Jimmy McNulty

Although the HBO series ended in 2008, fans of The Wire still travel from around the world to do self-guided tours of its filming locations . Places in Baltimore made famous by the television show include Bethel Church, the Brewer's Art restaurant, Greenmount Cemetery and the red-light district known as The Block, home to several strip clubs.

5. See the World's Largest Collection of Matisse Art

Back in 1949, the Baltimore Museum of Art beat out New York's Museum of Modern Art for the collection donated by Baltimore sisters Claribel and Etta Cone, which includes more than 3,000 pieces from artists Pablo Picasso, Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh. It's also home to 500 works by Henri Matisse, making it the largest collection of his art in the world.

6. Catch a Movie in a Classic Baltimore Building

The historic Senator Theatre, an Art Deco landmark added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, has hosted movie premieres for the films of directors John Waters and Barry Levinson, both Baltimore natives. It's also premiered other Baltimore-based films including The Accidental Tourist, Ladder 49 and Enemy of the State , which starred Will Smith, husband of actress and Baltimore native Jada Pinkett Smith. Built in 1939, it was restored and enlarged in 2012 and is known for selling fresh popcorn topped with real butter.

7. You'll Open Wide and Say "Wow!"

In 1840, the University of Maryland, Baltimore, opened the first dental school in the world. In 1996, it opened the National Museum of Dentistry, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, where you can come see George Washington's teeth — no, they weren't made of wood — dental instruments used on Queen Victoria of England and learn about how human teeth compare to those of different animals.

This map showcases a mix of destinations for Charm City’s emblematic crab cakes and treats from the Chesapeake Bay, plus a globe-trotting assortment of places boasting bold flavors from Venezuela, France, Italy, Japan, Mexico, and West Africa.

Sadly, the pandemic forced some of Baltimore’s favorites to shutter or pivot in a new direction (RIP, Lobo, Ida B’s, and Bertha’s). And while there are plenty of new and noteworthy spots opening in Baltimore, like The Urban Oyster and Costiera , restaurants on this map must be at least six months old.

For our latest Baltimore 38 map refresh, new additions include: Little Donna’s , for Hungarian-influenced cuisine that stuns in Upper Fells; Old Goucher’s small-but-mighty Chachi’s , for some of the best roasted chicken in the city; Bunny’s , for bubbles and fried poultry buckets in Federal Hill; and Cookhouse , for glistening crudo and vegetarian paella in beautiful Bolton Hill digs.

The following restaurants are leaving the 38: Cindy Lou’s, Good Neighbor, Fishnet (closed), and Duck Duck Goose (“on pause”).

The Corner Pantry

At this sophisticated British café located in the Lake Falls Village shopping center, light, spongy crumpets; softball-sized cheddar biscuits; and gluten-free Nutella financiers emerge from the ovens each day. Breakfast draws a crowd with favorites like the “Fat Egg Sammy,” a griddled and buttered crumpet with a fried egg topped with either TCP bacon or ham. Fridays put fish and chips, another of chef Neill Howell’s homages to his English roots, on the menu.

Ethel’s Creole Kitchen

New Orleans meets Baltimore at Ethel’s Creole Kitchen, where chefs Ed Bloom and Nick Creamer capture the essence of Crescent City flavors in their two-story restaurant. Under the tutelage of the late Louisiana chef Paul Prudhomme , Bloom picked up a love for Creole and Cajun cuisine. He and Creamer use Maryland staples to put a local spin on New Orleans classics like jambalaya, gumbo, and fried Chesapeake oysters served with remoulade. To really get into the spirit, order a Sazerac, the official cocktail of New Orleans.

Chiyo Sushi

There are a few great sushi spots in town, but if you ask most locals, they’ll tell you to head to Chiyo in Mt. Washington. In the heart of the merchant’s village, Chiyo has all the standard nigiri and sashimi you might expect, but we especially appreciate specialty selections like the Orioles roll with white tuna, avocado, and tobiko; udon noodle bowls; and banana tempura ice cream. Chiyo now serves lunch and dinner across a newly added upstairs level, joining seating across its downstairs bar or intimate dining room. Order takeout and delivery on the major apps.

Petit Louis Bistro

At this charming, unfussy French bistro in pedestrian-friendly Roland Park, diners have been tearing into warm French bread while diving into escargot, duck confit, and trout amandine for more than two decades. Chilled glasses of Sauternes and steaming bowls of French onion soup (with expertly browned cheese crust dripping over the edge of the bowl) alongside patina walls take diners directly to Europe without a trip out of Baltimore. Plus, there’s plenty of indoor and outdoor seating.

Cafe Campli

It makes sense that husband-and-wife duo Paul and Samantha Mincarelli fell for Abruzzo, Italy, with its sparkling Adriatic coastline and lush Apennine mountain view. Their love letter to the region is Cafe Campli — a sun-filled restaurant on the ground floor of Lauraville’s mixed-used SoHa Union. Just east of Rome, Abruzzo is known for ingredients like white anchovy, oxtail ragu, and spaghetti alla chitarra. Those signature techniques and flavors are all on display, as well as a thoughtful bar program of minerally white wines from Pecorino, herbaceous cocktails featuring Italian amari, and refreshing N/A spritzes. Start with homemade rosemary focaccia, continue with a seasonal pasta (this summer, splurp linguine and baby clams in white wine sauce and capers), order a Sunday Gravy for the table, and finish off with a warm bomboloni, a fluffy fried Italian doughnut oozing hazelnut-chocolate cream.

This Lauraville neighborhood restaurant is committed to supporting local farms. Piloted by Chef Andrew Weinzirl, Maggie’s Farm is a local destination for comfort food and Maryland staples. Enjoy the burger, Maryland crab cake, and fried green tomatoes inside or on the patio.

The Local Fry

Located at The Rotunda in Baltimore, the compact restaurant recently got a redesign to make it look as if French fries are hanging from the ceiling. Sadly, the ceiling fries aren’t real. Fries with toppings that range from cheese curds, Korean barbecue, and kimchi predictably anchor the menu , but banh mi, po’boys, rice bowls, and chicken wings (or tofu bites for a veg option) are also on tap.

Ambassador Dining Room

You might think you’re walking into someone’s apartment building (well, you are), but continue until you find the stately Ambassador Dining Room, which has been serving Indian fare for more than 25 years. The Singh family (owners of stellar spots Peerce’s and Ananda outside the city) sold the business to former employee Gopal Bishwakarma at the end of 2019, but what remains the same is the Ambassador’s beautiful patio, affordable lunch buffet, and weekend brunch options like braised lamb in shahi korma or chicken madras, a South Indian-style curry dish.

Dylan’s Oyster Cellar

While steamed crabs and crab cakes get a lot of credit for being signature dishes (more on that below), oysters are just as important to the backbone of Baltimore cuisine. And hardly no one knows that any more than Dylan Salmon, who started his business as a pop-up in a Mt. Vernon basement and then opened his own brick-and-mortar corner restaurant in Hampden. Inside, shuckers are constantly unhinging a rotating variety of fresh, raw oysters at the raw bar, while specials of the day are scrawled on a chalkboard wall. Look out for whole fish dishes and don’t leave without trying the green chile cheeseburger and traditional coddies (best appreciated on a Saltine with yellow mustard).

The Food Market

Hampden’s “King of the Avenue,” chef Chad Guass, packs enormous flavors into a menu filled with hearty comfort food hits like Amish soft pretzels with beer cheese fondue, mozzarella sticks, meatloaf with cheesy pesto potatoes, and crab cakes with lobster mac and cheese. The Baltimore club sandwich raises the bar of a classic BLT by piling a crab cake and shrimp salad on a soft potato bread. Check out the Heath bar-flavored bread pudding for dessert.

Located in Baltimore’s historic Meadow Mill, La Cuchara brings vibrance to a space that was formerly home to the London Fog raincoat company. The center dining room and ample bar offer views into the kitchen, where chef Ben Lefenfeld prepares Basque dishes like pan con tomate, strip steak with guajillo chile butter, and chilled seafood. The 12 Hottest New Restaurants in Baltimore

When Lane Harlan of Clavel first opened her beer garden Faddensonnen, she promised that the Old Goucher complex would continually add exciting dining ventures. And Chachi’s delivered when it opened in fall 2022. Comfort food is always on the menu — whether in the form of signature rotisserie chicken or schmaltzy potatoes covered in chicken drippings and coarse salt. Chachi’s has also perfected the art of the sauce, whether it’s egg dressing drizzled on asparagus, red bean dip featured on a pickle plate, or green anchovy sauce to pair with chicken. In the summer, an ideal dinner is a fresh and hearty salad of butter lettuce, thin watermelon radish, and tons of Parm enjoyed on a picnic table under string lights. This transportive dining room at this Venezuelan Station North oasis features a diverse tangle of healthy, green plants, playful wall murals of a fish and a rooster, and a playlist of Latin music in the background. Alma was where top chef Enrique Limardo got his start before heading to D.C. to open Seven Reasons. Now, rising Venezuelan chef David Zamudio meticulously plates Latin gyoza, Caribbean scallops, stuffed arepas, and a stunning burrata salad bursting with South American ingredients. Most of their menu is gluten free, with lots of vegan and vegetarian options. Most recently, Alma owner Irena Stein came out with an arepa cookbook .

The Bolton Hill neighborhood is truly stunning, with its soaring brownstones, grass-filled medians, and bespoke gardens around every corner. So it’s fitting that a cornerstone restaurant like Cookhouse be just as beautiful. Natural light splashes onto a long marble bar, exposed brick, and rich blue velvet banquets, where there is truly no bad seat in the house. Start off with a colorful gin sour with white miso, yuzu sake, corn liqueur, sesame oil, and egg white topped with nori and an edible flower. Snack on apps like refreshing yellowtail amberjack crudo or crispy honey-gochujang wings. Other standouts include garlic mussels, a vegetarian paella, and a truly incredible wagyu brisket-chuck burger with creamy mature English cheddar, smoked tomato-bacon jam, and crispy onions (only available on Thursdays).

Mera Kitchen Collective

To say Mera Kitchen Collective is unique would be an understatement. This worker-owned cooperative started off as pop-ups and now has its own permanent corner in Mt. Vernon to empower refugees to tap into their culinary heritage through cooking. Here you’ll find Middle Eastern, African, and Latin cuisine (with a lot of vegan and vegetarian options) including creamy hummus and eggplant mutubal, crushed red lentil soup, Burkina-style plantains, and carne asada tacos. A colorful mural from a local artist offers a vibrant backdrop while dining outdoors.

Magdalena Restaurant

About as fancy as Baltimore gets, the restaurant inside the luxe Ivy Hotel features innovative interpretations of Maryland cuisine. Executive Chef Ülfet Ralph (who’s had time with Chef Daniel Bouloud) has created a menu including dishes like Chesapeake Bay scallops with summer beans, crispy rice, harissa broth, and pork belly jam and Summer Risotto with corn purèe, corn relish, and espelette crema. Exceptional desserts include an almond cake served with a scoop of goat milk ice cream; and a strawberry chocolate tart with miso caramel, peanut butter mousse, and candied peanuts. There’s also an extensive selection of whiskeys and cocktails.

The Helmand

This venerable Afghani restaurant has delighted Mount Vernon residents for over 30 years with kaddo borwani, baked baby pumpkin dolloped with yogurt, and mantwo, a pastry stuffed with beef and onions. If choosing one dish seems overwhelming, go with a group of five or more and ask for “family style” service, and the staff will drop off a variety of large portions to share. The restaurant offers takeout, limited delivery, and indoor dining. There’s also a smattering of sidewalk tables along Charles Street.

Where to Eat and Drink in East Cambridge

Restaurante Tio Pepe

This subterranean, white-tablecloth dining room at this Franklin Street Spanish and Mediterranean restaurant opened in the late ‘60s. Since then, generations of Baltimoreans have celebrated birthdays and special occasions, and each likely included an order of puffed potatoes. Some of its waitstaff has been there since day one, which adds to its nostalgic appeal.

Faidley’s Seafood

Though the iconic Lexington Market just wrapped up a $45 million remodel, a stall that didn’t go anywhere was Faidley’s Seafood. The ever-popular seafood stall is still serving fist-sized crab cakes handmade by Nancy Faidley Divine herself, the local “delicacy” (lake trout), soft-shell crabs, clams, and, of course, oysters. Cocina Luchadoras

At this feel-good, family-run Mexican cafe pulsing with lively, Latin music, queso birria tacos, tortas, breakfast burritos, and huevos rancheros all come out of the kitchen. A pink-hued dining room and a heartfelt hospitality add to an atmosphere that feels like a party.

Little Donna’s

When it was announced that neighborhood stalwart Henninger’s was closing in 2021, many in the surrounding Butchers Hill area worried about the beloved space. But industry vet and Midwest native Robbie Tutleswki and his wife Kaleigh Schwalbe swept in to do the nearly impossible: maintain a nostalgic, lived-in feeling while creating something wholly new that landed on New York Times’ coveted best restaurants list. Little Donna’s is named for Tutleswki’s late Yugoslavian grandmother, whose warmth is felt in the homey decor and constant cooking is reflected on the menu. Think plush sausage- and kraut-filled pierogies, a crisp Serbian-influenced crab pancake, pork schnitzel from the local Ostrowski’s Sausage, and warm apple hand pie for dessert. The chef’s signature, thin-crust tavern pizzas are fired to perfection no doubt thanks to his decade of work with Chris Bianco. But what really makes it feel like Baltimore is the local love on the drink menu, including a Daddy’s Beer on Ice: a Union Zadie’s lager, Clamato, hot sauce, and lime with a chile rim.

Johnny Rad’s Pizzeria Tavern

The owners behind Johnny Rad’s have developed a bit of a mini empire with the addition of sausage bar Snake Hill in Highlandtown and disco dive The Royal Blue in Station North. But it all started in Upper Fells Point with this skate-punk pizza pub. Rotating weekly specials, tons of vegan options, and a local drink list set this place apart. But, of course, there’s the pizza — Neapolitan style crust with a variety of toppings like the charred pepp cups on the Pepe Martinez, mushrooms and spinach on the Trainwreck, and jalapeño and pineapple on the Hisoi. Be sure to fit in a round of pinball or Skee-Ball in the back.

Revered co-owners Steve Chu and Ephrem Abebe diligently source flavors from Ethiopia, Taiwan, Thailand, and India at both the Fells Point and the Hampden location, sticking to takeout only. Diners happily wait in line for favorites like tempura broccoli, “tofu brah” with spicy peanut sauce, or Taiwanese curry chicken on pillowy steamed gluten-free buns or rice bowls. Peter’s Inn

The quaint and quirky Peter’s Inn has had many lives. More than 30 years ago, it was a rowdy biker bar, but Bud and Karin Tiffany have turned it into one of the city’s go-to dining destinations. People flock to the row home restaurant for martini service, incredible garlic bread, an irresistible one-bite scallop dish, signature steak entrees, and a famed chocolate pot du creme. In 2017, a fire closed the restaurant for a little while, but in typical Peter’s fashion, it didn’t keep them down for long. The restaurant is back with a new shiny tin ceiling and the same stellar dishes coming out of the kitchen.

The Harbor East restaurant unites art and style, from the oversized bird’s nest to the Kendrick Lamar quotes plastered on the wall. BLK Swan pays homage to Baltimore staples, including the chicken box and fried lake trout (available for brunch). On weekend nights, DJs spin all kinds of music genres like R&B, EDM, and pop.

Thai Street

The Thai stall in Fell’s Point’s historic Broadway Market has quickly become a neighborhood staple. Recipes passed down through generations use traditional techniques with a street vendor twist as the kitchen puts out regional specialties like khao soi, red or green curry, pad see ew, and a signature pineapple fried rice. Dishes can come very spicy, so keep that in mind when selecting a spice level. 

Ramen Utsuke

In Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, bowls brim with Japanese Kyushu-style tonkotsu ramen and miso ramen, while affordable bento boxes are stuffed with tempura-fried seafood or chicken, teriyaki, and more served alongside rice, seaweed salad, cabbage, Japanese potato croquettes, green beans, and sauce for dipping. The Oriole park ramen, like its namesake, has become a downtown favorite among Oriole loyalists. Vegan options are also available.

Peter Chang’s NiHao had a whirlwind debut, opening in the dark days of the pandemic, and quickly gaining national attention for its top-notch Sichuan cooking from the James Beard Foundation . Lydia Chang and JBA-nominated pastry pro Pichet Ong own and operate this 120-seat Canton restaurant where they serve a Chinese menu incorporating vegetarian hits like eggplant and garlic sauce and mapo tofu alongside green peppercorn flounder, dim sum options, and half or whole Peking duck from executive chef Antoni Szachowicz.

Bunny’s Buckets and Bubbles

We often wonder when Jesse Sandlin sleeps. The Top Chef alum is seemingly brimming with ideas, whether it’s her vibrant Highlandtown spot Sally O’s or neighborhood bar the Dive. But diners can tell she poured her entire heart and soul into Bunny’s, a stylized diner where fried chicken and champagne are at the forefront, which she opened last spring. In a stunning transformation, the longtime Wharf Rat space (all dark wood, like the belly of a ship) into a sparkling, retro-tinged oasis. Whether you’re perched at the huge center bar or one of the round booths in the corner, Bunny’s is made for snacking and sipping — Ritz crackers with creamy pimento cheese dip, dressed deviled eggs, or melty biscuits with honey butter. Playfully named cocktails (we are partial to the gin-based Ramona Flowers) and welcome spirit-free options round out the menu. Of course, patrons can order fried chicken by the bucket, on a sandwich with hot honey and ranch, or atop a black-eyed pea cassoulet. Those options are also available during weekend brunch, when Bunny’s truly shines.

Thames Street Oyster House

To find Thames Street Oyster House, head towards the water and cobblestoned streets of Fells Point. Inside is a raw bar with plenty of local oysters to choose from and a great take on Baltimore’s favorite drink, the orange crush. But the vibe tends to veer more towards New England, with dishes like Block Island scallops or the lobster roll on a warm, buttered bun. Generally expect to wait a while for a table (ask about seats on the back patio), but you can walk around a beautiful neighborhood while you bide your time.

Café Dear Leon

Lines often stretch down the sidewalk in front of this petite Canton pastry shop, where Cheolsoo Lee, Sungae Lee, and Min Kim serve tamago sando (Japanese egg sandwich), smoked salmon on everything focaccia, and frittata sandwiches. Items are released daily according to a strict itinerary , so plan accordingly to score oat scones (6 a.m.), pain au chocolate (9 a.m.), and crab and egg sandwiches (11 a.m.).

Planted in the post-college town of Federal Hill beyond the limits of the lively bar scene, Sobo recently celebrated a decade its row home restaurant space. Embodying the city’s charming hospitality, owners Ana and Linda Leventis treat everyone like family as the cafe hums with locals and new graduates flocking there to impress visiting parents. The Sobo burger with fingerling potatoes and salad is a winning trifecta, and there are plenty of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free dishes. A parklet is prime for outdoor happy hour.

This South Baltimore haven from siblings Josh and Stephanie Hershkovitz claimed its place as the city’s top pizza destination when it opened over 10 years ago. The classic wood-fired Neapolitan margherita is a quintessential masterpiece, with rich red sauce and melted mozzarella on a chewy, stretchy, lightly spotted dough. Crispy cauliflower, burrata, meatballs, and other pizza and pasta are particularly wonderful when enjoyed near the near the wood-fired oven or out on the patio. 

Papi Cuisine

Diners have a hard time focusing on anything other than the lauded crab cake egg rolls coming out of the kitchen at Papi Cuisine, but the newly planted South Baltimore Afro-Latin fusion restaurant also serves an excellent mac and cheese and many surf and turf options. A new brunch menu features shrimp and smoked gouda grits and fried brulee French toast.

9 Reasons Why You Should Visit Baltimore

Baltimore’s reputation may be in line with the HBO series ‘ The Wire ,’ but that’s nowhere near the full story. As a longtime Baltimore resident, I understand why the city has earned the nickname of Charm City. These opposing reputations show that Baltimore is a city of contrasts; it’s a charming, beautiful, friendly, yet complicated place worth experiencing. The city is constantly growing and developing, including the tourism industry, food scene, artist community, and more. I think everyone should take a trip to Baltimore and view it as the tourist destination it deserves to be. Here are nine reasons why I believe you should visit Baltimore City.

A sense of community

When people compare Baltimore and the nearby capital city of Washington, DC, they say that the first thing people in DC ask you is what you do. In Baltimore, they ask you what you like to do. As a former DC resident and current Baltimore resident, I can confirm that this comparison is true. Baltimore has a neighborly, community atmosphere where people don’t place your entire worth on what you do as a career.

This community atmosphere includes a lot of local bars and cafes where people know each other and will freely talk to strangers. The Brewer’s Art is one of my favorite bars. More than once, I’ve sparked up a conversation with strangers at the bar or vice versa with absolutely no awkwardness or sense of intrusion. Dovecote Cafe, located in the historic Reservoir Hill neighborhood, is another community-oriented spot. The cafe hosts bazaars to support local artists and other fun community events. The owners’ commitment to Baltimore showed when they were able to buy the building in which their cafe is located using crowdfunding.

Baltimore is known for its quirkiness, and I mean that in the best possible way. After all, it’s where John Waters, the cult filmmaker behind Hairspray , grew up and draws inspiration from. It’s where creatives from all walks of life can find a place to express themselves in whichever way they choose. The Crown is one of my favorite nightlife spots in the city and it exemplifies creativity and weirdness. On any given night you might find a drag show, experimental art show, funk dance party, a live experimental electronic sitar musician, or just a really good DJ and dance party.

Robust and accessible art scene

The art scene in Baltimore is alive and well, partly thanks to institutions like the Maryland Institute College of Art and the Baltimore School for the Arts, a public arts high school, and venues like the Creative Alliance. But what’s unique about Baltimore is that its art scene is accessible. There are fine art institutions like the Walters Art Museum and Baltimore Museum of Art, but there are even more free, inexpensive, and underground options for creatives and art aficionados.

The city hosts Artscape, the country’s largest free arts festival, and Light City, a large-scale light, music, and innovation festival that literally lights up the Inner Harbor with unique art installations every year. Public murals are a prominent part of the city’s landscape. If you live in Baltimore, you know at least one person in a band, a handful of visual artists, and most likely other types of creatives like writers and poets. P

Food and drink scene

Baltimore didn’t always have an active food scene, but times have changed. It’s now easy to find many types of international food, cocktail bars with mixologists, breweries, renowned chefs, food trucks, and a long list of food events and festivals. Some of my favorite spots include Alma Cocina Latina, where chef Enrique Limardo serves Venezuelan food that goes beyond the traditional arepas, and Clavel, a Mexican restaurant and mezcaleria with Sinaloan roots. Just across the street is W.C. Harlan, where you go for pricey, but strong and delicious cocktails in a speakeasy setting.

Architecture

Baltimore’s architecture is part of the reason why it’s called Charm City. From colorfully painted brownstones in the Abell neighborhood to intricate Catholic churches in Mt. Vernon and art deco buildings downtown, it’s always good to look up when in Baltimore so you don’t miss a detail. Baltimore’s industrial past creates an interesting architectural backdrop, as well, as old abandoned mills and factories are repurposed into commercial and residential space while keeping their past function as a focus of the design.

Natural beauty

Baltimore has a number of green spaces within city boundaries, including Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park, which is the second largest woodland park in the United States. The park stretches into the county and includes six hiking trails, plus a Civil War-era mansion and other historic stone structures. City parks like Patterson Park, Druid Hill Park, and Canton Waterfront Park, museums like the National Aquarium, and gardens like Sherwood Gardens, Rawlings Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, and Cylburn Arboretum don’t even complete the list of natural spaces in Baltimore City.

Proximity to major cities

Another reason to visit Baltimore is simple convenience. It’s an easy stop on a road trip along the East Coast or within the Mid-Atlantic area. A 45-minute to an hour drive gets you to Washington, DC. A two-hour drive takes you to Philadelphia, and about four hours gets you to New York City. If you’re in the area, it’s more than worth it to spend a few days exploring Charm City.

Another prominent community in Baltimore is the activist community. People who want to make the city, country, and the world a better place can easily find a home here. Red Emma’s, a worker-owned bookstore and coffeehouse, is a popular meeting spot for Baltimore activists and a venue for panels and discussions with authors and local activists.

Baltimore is a city rich in history and much of it is preserved. Historic neighborhoods like Fells Point, Bolton Hill, and Federal Hill protect knowledge of Baltimore’s past with their original buildings and cobblestone streets. Many historical figures are from or have passed through Baltimore, including Frederick Douglass, Billie Holiday, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Edgar Allan Poe, who is rumored to have died on a Fells Point bench. From Fells Point, you can take a water taxi to Fort McHenry, a national monument and the fort where Francis Scott Key was inspired to write the Star Spangled Banner.

GOP Rep. Tim Burchett calls Kamala Harris a 'DEI vice president'

Rep. Tim Burchett , R-Tenn., blasted Kamala Harris in a social media post Monday, calling her a “DEI vice president,” using the initialism for “diversity, equity and inclusion” programs.

"The media propped up this president, lied to the American people for three years, and then dumped him for our DEI vice president," Burchett s a id on X .

He also referred to Harris as "a DEI hire" in a brief interview Monday, telling C NN that during the 2020 campaign candidate Joe Biden said “he was going to hire a Black female for vice president.”

“What about white females? What about any other group?” Burchett added.

Biden said at a March 2020 Democratic debate that he’d choose a female running mate but did not mention race or ethnicity. Other top running mate contenders at the time included Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan.

Biden announced Sunday that he was dropping his re-election bid . He endorsed Harris for president the same day.

Burchett, a longtime state legislator in Tennessee and former Knox County mayor who was first elected to Congress in 2018, has previously cited DEI in disparaging Harris. In an int e rview with Ne wsmax this month, he said: "When I hear her talk, I just scratch my head and think this is what DEI is really about. It clearly is. She checks all the boxes. She'll say she's of Indian descent one day, then she'll say she's of Black descent. It's just box-checking."

Harris is the first  female and Black vice president . She is the daughter of an Indian mother and a Jamaican father, with a résumé that includes being elected district attorney of San Francisco, attorney general of California and U.S. senator.

Burchett, one of eight House Republicans who successfully voted to oust Rep. Kevin McCarthy , of California, as House speaker last year, also used a DEI attack line at a heated House committee hearing Monday about the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. “You are a DEI horror story,” Burchett told Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle.

Conservatives have widely accused Cheatle, a 27-year veteran of the agency, of being unqualified for the top job and said female agents on Trump's Secret Service team were physically incapable of protecting him.

The comments directed at Cheatle follow a pattern at other recent news events where conservative lawmakers and pundits have cited DEI programs as a contributing factor in disasters as disparate as the  Boeing-made airplane problems  and the  Baltimore bridge collapse .

Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, asked Cheatle during the hearing whether the July 13 attempt to assassinate Trump was "due to DEI or rather systemic failures in communication and potentially safety protocols."

"The incident on the 13th has nothing to do with DEI," Cheatle responded. "The incident on the 13th has to do with a failure or a gap either in planning or communication."

Is It Safe in Baltimore?

Baltimore does not have the best reputation when it comes to safety. Thanks to the HBO series "The Wire," people who have never visited Baltimore tend to think residents bide their time dodging bullets and the city often ranks highly on various lists enumerating the most dangerous cities in the U.S. Unfortunately, the city's high rates of crime, poverty, confirm some of the grimmer images of Baltimore, but these are not consistent across every neighborhood.

There are plenty of reasons to love Baltimore. It has excellent restaurants, diverse neighborhoods, fun museums, fantastic art , and bright minds. Several of the city's projects, including the Inner Harbor, have been lauded as shining examples of redevelopment. And despite all of the city's problems, many dedicated people are working hard to change Baltimore's story.

Is Baltimore Dangerous?

In Baltimore, you can visit the popular Inner Harbor area without much worry. Police regularly patrol this area and other neighborhoods that tourists frequent, like Little Italy, Fells Point , Federal Hill, and Mount Vernon. Although the crime rates in Baltimore should not be downplayed, average travelers should not be too concerned. Most crimes—especially drug and gang-related activity—occur in isolated areas of the city that tourists have very little reason to visit like West Baltimore .

In general, the biggest annoyance for visitors in well-trodden areas of the city is by and large people asking for money. Most will leave you alone after you give them some change or do nothing. If someone follows or heckles you, it is best to ignore the person and be on your way. Most likely, they will give up without confrontation.

Is Baltimore Safe for Solo Travelers?

Baltimore can be a good city for solo travelers that stick to the revitalized parts of town, but tourists, alone or in a group, should generally avoid walking around late at night. At night, you are more likely to be a victim of mugging . During the day, you should be wary of pickpockets . Pay attention to your belongings and keep them firmly by your side while walking. You should never leave valuables, like laptops or cell phones, unattended or out in the open.

Is Baltimore Safe for Female Travelers?

In addition to all the general precautions, female travelers should be prepared to experience some catcalling. Street harassment is illegal in Baltimore , but it can still happen from time to time. Female travelers should stick to the highly-trafficked tourist areas during the daytime, avoid going out at night, and take a taxi or ride-share if they need to get across town.

Safety Tips for LGBTQ+ Travelers

Baltimore's LGBTQ+ community has a long history in the city with drag culture dating back to the 1930s. The city is home to historic gay villages like Mount Vernon and there is an established nightlife scene with pubs and dance clubs . Maryland is a conservative state, but it ranks highly for tolerance on the Spartacus Gay Travel Index  , earning extra points for its anti-discrimination laws. Homophobic encounters are not unheard of within Baltimore in recent years, transphobic attacks have garnered national attention.

Safety Tips for BIPOC Travelers

Baltimore has the fifth largest population of African Americans of any city in the U.S. and the community has played a large part in defining the culture of the city. BIPOC travelers should be aware that like many cities across the U.S., Baltimore's African American population struggles with unfair discrimination from law enforcement. Racially-motivated hate crimes are not something the typical tourist has to worry about, but BIPOC tourists can take extra precautions by staying in the city's main areas and not walking around late at night.

Safety Tips for Travelers

Although Baltimore has some rough areas, many parts of the city are perfectly safe. However, travelers should know what to expect to stay vigilant.

• Be aware of your environment and understand where you are going and how to get there. If you get lost or find yourself in a sticky situation, act like you know what you're doing until you can get your bearings.
• Don't flash money or valuables like jewelry and cell phones. So long as you exercise the normal precautions, you would in any other city, you shouldn't need to worry.
• If you have a car, never leave anything in sight to reduce the chance of robbery.
• Take extra precaution when out at night and consider taking using a cab to get around instead of walking or public transportation. Avoid walking alone if you can.

Just in case you needed a little more proof that we’re living in the weirdest timeline: Here’s Stephen A. Smith trying to enjoy a Sunday cookout while being tracked down and ask about Kamala Harris’ presidential bid in the wake of Joe Biden’s announcement he won’t be seeking a second term.

Forget literally any SAS quote here, because this photo is an unintentional work of art. A stunning, modern tableau of brilliance with one of sport’s most recognized figures front and center. Like something out of Where’s Waldo? you keep staring at this and notice more and more elements that make it special.

Do you have any idea how mad this man is right now? He’s just trying to chill on a Sunday without some dude coming up to him asking him about politics. Also, there’s some severe body language going on here .

This girl, who just wants it to be over

I feel for this child. Imagine if you’re a youth who’s related to Stephen A. Smith. You already have to endure you classmates making fun of his Pokemon takes, and now you can’t even get dragged to Sunday dinner without someone finding y’all.

I could spend an hour on this plate alone, but let’s just hit the top-level observations. These are either sauceless, or lightly-sauced wings. Nothing to dip them in. No sides. No veggies. Just wings. Also SAS opted for a five wing first plate, and he picked four drums and one flat.

This is a pro move, because drums are where it’s at — but man, that’s a selfish-ass wing ratio. You gotta fall on the sword and take a few more flats to balance it out.

My man brought a sweater

The reporter is based in NYC, so we have to assume this is in a New York park. The photo was posted at 5:36 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. At that time, in this location it was 84 degrees out. What it the world made SAS leave the house and think “it might be cold out” to the point where he grabbed a sweater?

Obviously he made the wrong move, otherwise he wouldn’t tie it around his waist — but still I have major questions about the organizational element that made him think he even might need a sweater in the park in July.

Why’d you bug this man and his family?

I have nothing but the utmost respect for journalists who were out on their grind Sunday because of the Biden announcement when they were just enjoying another day of rest. That said, what in the world possessed you to think approaching Stephen A. Smith at his family dinner was the right move? My man, let this poor family enjoy their Sunday afternoon in the park.

It’s not like SAS is the right person, or this is the right venue to ask about the political future of the nation. Just let him eat his dry-ass drums in peace, protected from the non-existent cold by his reserve sweater.
