Kuala Terengganu is in a pretty spot centred on a promontory on the South China Sea. It was a fishing village before oil was found here. Now rapid development has lead to a great waterfront area. You’ll also find one of the best Chinatowns in Malaysia. This is also the best place in Terengganu for yummy food!  The area is picturesque, with kampong-style stilt houses.

Top 19 Best Things To Do In Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia [2023]

Below are our suggestions for what to do in Kuala Terengganu. Note that the state of Terengganu has weekends on a Friday and Saturday. Opening hours to many of the interesting places to visit in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia are limited or closed on Fridays. So if you only have one day in this city, try to make it a different day.

It’s also worth noting that when we visited, many attractions we planned to visit were actually closed down so be weary about reading older publications, like Lonely Planet. Everything below was definitely available when we updated this article. Be wary of anything published earlier.

Visit The Tengku Tengah Zaharah Mosque

Tengku Tengah Zaharah Mosque

When it comes to what to do in Terengganu, I recommend starting with a visit to the Tengku Tengah Zaharah Mosque.  This stunning mosque, known as the Floating Mosque, is on an artificial island surrounded by water about 4.5 kilometres south east of the centre of Kuala Terengganu.

The mosque is pretty at any time of day, but it’s particularly beautiful at sunset when the traditional white, Moorish design looks spectacular against the setting sun.  Definitely, a top place to visit in Terengganu.

Explore Taman Tamadun Islam And The Crystal Mosque

Crystal Mosque Kuala Terengganu places of attraction in Terengganu

When you visit Kuala Terengganu, definitely take a look at Taman Tamadu Islam – the world’s first Islamic civilisation park. There are two parts to it.

Zone A is the first part. It is free. Here you can visit the Crystal Mosque pictured above. Made out of steel and glass, it is quite unique. It is named after the huge crystal chandelier in the main prayer hall.

Zone B has an entry fee and is home to a series of miniature models of famous Islamic buildings from around the world such as Mecca’s Haram Mosque and India’s Taj Mahal. They are built to a scale between 1:17 and 1:22. There are also river cruises.

The mosque is located about 2.5 kilometres from central Kuala Terengganu and there are bus and taxi options.  This is one attraction that should be on your list of Terengganu places to visit.

Explore Chinatown

Chinatown Kuala Terengganu

After the serenity of the mosques, the next best place to visit in Kuala Terengganu is bustling Chinatown. This compact area is centred on Jalan Kampung Cina and is home to heritage buildings, temples and alleys with street art.  It’s charming and makes for a lovely walk.

It’s a fun place for a quick stroll and, below, you will find some Kuala Terengganu things to do while you are there.

Find Some Street Art

Kuala Terengganu street art

More and more cities in Malaysia seem to be adding some fabulous street art to their alleys and streets and, thankfully, Kuala Terengganu has too!

The best place in Kuala Terengganu to see street art is in Chinatown.  While you’re there check out every alley you see and you’ll find many will have street art. When I tried to find examples I had looked up beforehand, they just weren’t where they were publicised. It’s much easier (and more fun) to just look out for it as you go.

Visit Ho Ann Kiong Temple

Ho Ann Kiong Temple Kuala Terengganu

Also located in Chinatown, the attractive Ho Ann Kiong Temple is another Terengganu place to visit as you wander around.

This red and gold temple dates back to 1796, although it was rebuilt in both 1801 and 2010 after a fire. It’s smaller than I expected. Make sure you check out the stone carvings inside and outside the temple.

Behind Ho Ann Kiong Temple

And when you are finished, walk around the back. There is a cool “wishing tree”.

Learn Chinese Peranakan History At Teck Soon Heritage House

Teck Soon Heritage House Kuala Terengganu

In a previous life, this Chinatown shophouse was owned by the Teck Soon Trading Company. Now, it is a much more interesting place in Terengganu as it is a history museum focused on Chinese Peranakan culture in this city. Painted beautifully in three shades of blue, even if you don’t want to enter, it’s worth checking out the outside.

Entry is free. However, it is unclear what the opening hours of the museum are now. Still, wander past when you are exploring Kuala Terengganu as it looks great.

Shop At The Central Market

Kuala Terengganu Central Market

Another one of the things to do Kuala Terengganu offers is the Central Market. This is the place to go for a lively atmosphere, to sample local food and buy fruit.

There’s also a wide range of batik and locally weaved fabric here. Many stalls are shut on Fridays.

Visit The Zainal Abidin Mosque

Zainal Abidin Mosque, Kuala Terengganu

For a mosque closer to the city centre, the Zainal Abidin Mosque is a Kuala Terengganu tourist attraction just a short walk from Chinatown. It’s pretty inside with 9 domes letting light in and pretty latticed windows.

Non-Muslims can enter if dressed appropriately.

Check Out Istana Maziah

Istana Maziah In Kuala Terengganu

Near the Central Market on the side of a hill is the Sultan’s Palace.

You can’t go inside to visit, but it’s still one of the Kuala Terengganu places to visit – you can check out the outside as you walk past on Jalan Masjid Abidin.

Visit Bukit Puteri

Another one of the places to go in Terengganu which is located by the Central Market and Istana Maziah is Bukit Puteri. Here, there are a few Kuala Terengganu activities including a 200 metre hill you can walk up to get great views of Kuala Terengganu, the Sungai Terengganu river mouth and out to the South China Sea.

There are also historical remains here from when the sultan used this area during the civil war as a fort. There are still cannons, a flagpole, large bell and remains of defence walls. You can also find a lighthouse at the top of the hill.

Entry costs RM1. It was closed at the time of publishing so we couldn’t check it out.

Walk Along The Waterfront Area

Kuala Terengganu riverfront area

For your Kuala Terengganu sightseeing list be sure to add the area by the river near Chinatown. There are pretty bridges and walkways and even a huge “I <3 KT” sign.

It’s a nice place to walk in the evening, and there are some food stalls to fill your belly as well.

Explore Pulau Duyung

Pulau Duyung Kuala Terengganu

Pulau Duyung is an island in the estuary close to the centre of Kuala Terengganu. It’s quite different from the other options of what to see in Kuala Terengganu as it feels like you go back in time if you walk around the older areas.

It is just a short taxi, bus or ferry (from behind Central Market but just once a day) from the centre and, unfortunately, modern housing estates are starting to take over the island. However, there are still old wooden houses and it can feel like you are in a smaller village.

You can walk around and soak up the island as well as visit old boat-building yards where boats are often built using old tools and techniques. Pulau Duyung is certainly another one of the interesting places in Kuala Terengganu to visit.

Learn History At The Muzium Kompleks Negeri Terengganu (Terengganu State Museum)

Muzium Kompleks Negeri Terengganu

This is a top tourist attraction in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia if you want to learn more about the history of the area and to see traditional houses. It’s actually the largest museum in Malaysia with 4 interconnected buildings built on stilts and based on ancient Terengganu palace designs!

The highlight is definitely the buildings themselves and other traditional buildings that are here.

Inside, you will find information on natural history including rocks, minerals, flora and fauna found in the state, local textiles, traditional handicrafts, the Terengganu royal family, petroleum, the arrival of Islam into the Terengganu area and the history of human development in Terengganu. There are also old cars, boats and planes to check out. It’s a lot!

The only shame is that it could be better maintained and put in some type of order so you can get as much as possible from a visit. Still, it’s definitely one of the Kuala Terengganu tourist attractions worth visiting, even just for the buildings alone.

This tourist attraction in Terengganu is located about 6 kilometres from the city, so you need to bus or take a Grab taxi. Foreigner entry is currently RM15 for adults or RM10 for kids. It’s a fair bit cheaper for Malaysians.

Eat Everything At Town City Food Court

Town City Food Court

The best place to visit in Terengganu when you start to get hungry is Town City Food Court.  Located on the edge of Chinatown, it’s the perfect place to kick back for lunch or dinner. There are some good Chinese food options. There is also a relatively good selection of cold beer and fans to keep things cool.

When I first entered, I was overwhelmed by some menus being only in Chinese, but people speak at least some English so don’t let that stop you!

Taste The Great Coffee At Star Anise

Star Anise Kuala Terengganu

One of the top 10 things to do in Kuala Terengganu is to pop into Kuala Terengganu’s best coffee joint!

Open from midday to midnight in Chinatown, this is the perfect place to grab a sweet coffee or to take a break between sightseeing for some pie or cheesecake.

Relax at Batu Buruk (Beach)

Batu Buruk Terengganu attractions places

Looking for some beach time with your Kuala Terengganu main attractions? Then head to Batu Buruk.

Located a short drive away, this is where you will find a long sandy beach with nice water although it’s a better place to picnic than swim. There are also cultural performances sometimes and swings right on the beach!

It is popular with locals, particularly on weekends, so weekdays can be a better time to visit with the absolute best time to visit being on Friday nights when there is a delicious night market.

While Batu Buruk is not the best place at Terengganu if you’re looking for a swim, it’s still well worth a visit to hang out with the locals.

Take A Cruise

Kuala Terengganu drawbridge

A great way to explore Kuala Terengganu is from the water, especially if you are short on time.

On this two hour cruise , you can see many of the things to do in Kuala Terengganu from a different angle and take some great photos.

This cruise visits the Crystal Mosque, Duyong Island, Sekati Island, the big drawbridge and more. It departs throughout the day so you can choose your perfect time slot.

Visit Redang Island

Laguna Redang Island Resort Kuala Terengganu beach

Redang Island is the place to go for gorgeous beaches and great snorkelling and diving. Visiting here is a great to intersperse the city attractions of Kuala Terengganu with some amazing natural attractions. It’s one of the prettiest places I have been in Malaysia.

While at least an overnight stay is best (read our guide to the best resorts here ), it is also possible to day trip to Redang Island. Find our full Redang travel guide here.

You can also read exactly how to get to Redang from Kuala Terengganu here.

Visit A Fisherman’s Village In Seberang Takir

Found just off the coast of Kuala Terengganu, Seberang Takir is a fisherman’s village which is the best places in Terengganu for visitors to get a glimpse of authentic local culture in the area.

Hire a local boat and driver to take you to the village, as you immerse yourself and observe the everyday lives of locals in the village. Visitors here are always welcome.

Just make sure that you’re respectful with the locals because Seberang Takir is a real working village.

Kuala Terengganu Itinerary

The downtown area is home to many of the attractions and activities in Terengganu which are mentioned above.  They are all just a short walk from each other.

Below, I have listed a short circuit you could do on foot to visit all the Terengganu interesting places. You only need a couple of hours to do this.

Visit the Terengganu points of interest in this order to save your legs and see a lot in a short time:

  • Istana Maziah
  • Zainal Abidin Mosque
  • Bukit Puteri
  • Central Market
  • Walk through Chinatown, looking for street art and while visiting the following attractions.
  • Ho Ann Kiong Temple
  • Town City Food Court
  • Waterfront area

Top it off with this river cruise, and you can see a lot of Kuala Terengganu in half a day.

Best Hotels In Kuala Terengganu

A plus about visiting Kuala Terengganu is that there is a range of accommodation and it is all good value.

I recommend staying somewhere central where you can walk to most tourist attractions in Terengganu mentioned above. Make sure you are close to Chinatown and that will tick this box.

MIDRANGE – Grand Puteri Hotel Review

Grand Puteri Kuala Terengganu outside

The Grand Puteri Hotel is my top choice because it is so centrally located, has great facilities and is incredibly good value.

You can easily walk to most Kuala Terengganu attractions listed above from here and then cool down in the pool when you are done. There is also a restaurant and a business centre.

There are a few different room types. We stayed in the cheapest, which is fine – although you do somewhat get what you pay for. There are suites if you want a treat! I was very happy with the price we paid.

BUDGET – Arena Boutique Hotel Review

kuala terengganu travel

For a great priced option, consider the clean, tidy and comfortable Arena Boutique Hotel on the edge of Chinatown. It’s only a budget hotel in terms of price, not what is offered.

There is a great range of room types of solo travellers, couples and families with bedding for up to five. Rooms come with free wifi, tea and coffee making facilities, flatscreen TV and comfortable bedding. There is also an executive suite with its own living area.

On-site, you can also find a fitness centre and a restaurant.

Kuala Terengganu is easy to reach from anywhere in Malaysia. There is an airport where you can fly direct from Kuala Lumpur or you can catch buses from many points.

You can find direct buses to Kuala Terengganu from Kuala Lumpur here.

At the time of writing this, direct buses from Singapore to Kuala Terengganu were not running. Your best bet is to get a bus to Johor Bahru and then catch a direct one from there.

An even easier way to get to Kuala Terengganu from all over peninsular Malaysia is to take a private, long-distance taxi.

We can book one for you with a safe and trustworthy local operator. Click here for the details.

Getting Around Kuala Terengganu

Most things to do in Kuala Terengganu are close together so it’s easy to walk between many of the attractions here.

For others, there is a good bus system in Kuala Terengganu which should get you to most places of interest in Kuala Terengganu listed above. However, if you have limited time, it’s much easier to use taxis and they are affordable as well.

Use the Grab app (easy to install and get started if you don’t already have it) to get taxis. This works like Uber (in fact, Grab bought Uber in Malaysia) and makes life very easy.

Map Of Attractions In Kuala Terengganu

To help you plan your itinerary below is a map which shows where all the places to go in Kuala Terengganu are located.

Things To Do In Kuala Terengganu map

Kuala Terengganu With Kids

I visited Kuala Terengganu with my kids and found it a very easy place to be. Most places to visit Kuala Terengganu are short and sweet which is excellent for kids with short attention spans!

They also particularly loved the Muzium Kompleks Negeri Terengganu thanks to all the buildings, cars, planes and boats.

The night market at Batu Buruk is also a winner, particularly if you’re after a Kuala Terengganu night activity.

Playground behind Town City Food Court

There is also a playground out the back of the Town City Food Court perfect for a play while you get something to eat. The riverfront area is also good to get rid of some energy. There is another great playground near Shahbandar Jetty.

Final Words

It can be easy to skip over Kuala Terengganu on your way elsewhere but don’t! A visit here is an easy way to see a different slice of Malaysia with some low key attractions and great food.

Even if you can only spare a night on your way to Redang Island, it’s worth it! Especially as many of the Kuala Terengganu activities are a short walk from each other meaning you can explore a lot in even just a morning or evening. This city is great for walking around in and people are very friendly and helpful.

Don’t miss it!

Apart from this, Penarik is also very popular for firefly sanctuary. All you need to do is to take an evening or night boat ride through the swampy mangrove forests and Sonneratia caseolaris trees to watch thousands of awe-striking fireflies.

Kuala Terengganu

Kuala Terengganu is the capital of Terengganu. It occupies a promontory jutting into the South China Sea and is flanked by the estuary of Sungai Terengganu. The city is a microcosm of Malaysia’s economic history: fishing village strikes oil and rapid modernity ensues. In just a few years this once sleepy town has been inextricably altered. Land reclamation and development of the waterfront has seen the creation of attractive parks and parades plus a modern harbour that has one of Asia's biggest drawbridges. Despite the rapid modernisation Kuala Terengganu retains plenty of charm. Here you'll find one of eastern Peninsular Malaysia’s prettiest and most interesting Chinatowns, and old kampong-style stilt-houses can still be found just across the river. With seafood-heavy local cuisine and good transport links, it's definitely worth spending a day or two in Kuala Terengganu in between the islands and jungles.

Kuala Terengganu is the administrative capital, royal capital and the main economic centre of Terengganu , on the east coast of peninsular Malaysia . The city is also the main gateway to many of the state's tourist destinations, including Kampung Cina, Pasar Besar Kedai Payang, Terengganu State Museum, and Batu Buruk Beach. Even though the city is not spared from modernity and development, Kuala Terengganu retains strong Malay influences that are intermixed with other cultures from its long history as a port.

Understand [ edit ]

Kuala Terengganu is about 440 km northeast of Kuala Lumpur. The city sits at the estuary of Terengganu River, facing the South China Sea.

27 Things To Do In Terengganu: Visit Lesser-Known Lakes, Hiking Trails, Rivers & More

kuala terengganu travel

Things to do in Terengganu

When Malaysians travel to Terengganu , we’d usually head straight to the acclaimed Redang Island and Perhentian Islands. It’s rare for most to stop by other parts of Terengganu for a vacay.

But little may we know that we’ve been missing out on other unbelievably gorgeous natural wonders that Terengganu has to offer. From an emerald-green river, to a bright blue lake, and an enchanting firefly park, here is a list of lesser-known attractions to hit up the next time you’re in Terengganu.

– Outdoor activities –

1. kenyir lake – take a dip with fish, island-hop, and see nature up close.

things to do in terengganu - kenyir lake

Kenyir Lake (Tasik Kenyir) is synonymous with Terengganu as it’s a major attraction in the state for both locals and tourists. Located in Hulu Terengganu, it’s an artificial lake covering a vast 38,000 hectares. The lake is surrounded by luscious rainforests and is home to a myriad of fishes.

There is an abundance of things to do on the lake and its many islands – a haven for outdoor and nature lovers alike. Avoid the north-east monsoon season around October to March every year when the lake is closed.

You can explore the Bewah Cave (Gua Bewah) and marvel at its incredible formations and limestone hills, while keeping a look out for common cave inhabitants such as bats, spiders, and frogs.

Or head over to Kelah Fish Sanctuary where visitors will be able to dip in the river together with kelah fishes. The fishes are aplenty, and they will swarm you if you feed them so you’ll get to feel their scales and gentle bites which have been described as “massaging.”

things to do in terengganu - kelah fish sanctuary

For a more relaxing activity, take a stroll through the Herbs Garden (Taman Herba) and Orchid Garden (Taman Orkid) on Sah Kecil Island. You’ll get to enjoy a leisurely walk while learning about the many herbs and spices native to Malaysia.

things to do in terengganu - herb garden

Meanwhile, the Orchid Garden is a conservatory for a huge variety of orchids, both rare and common ones, in a multitude of shapes, sizes, and colours. The park with over 11,000 orchid plants can be found on Pulau Hilir Selimbar .

things to do in terengganu - orchid garden

As a result of high rainfall and undisturbed catchment areas surrounding Kenyir Lake, you’ll find 14 waterfalls within the vicinity – each with different hiking trails.

One of the most accessible and popular ones is the Lasir Waterfall . You can have a relaxing picnic by the stream, swim in it, or try out waterfall abseiling if you’re into more adventurous activities.

things to do in terengganu - lasir waterfall

How to get there:

Board a boat to get to Kenyir Lake from Pengkalan Gawi jetty. You can also island-hop for a day via speedboat from here from RM60.

Alternatively, Pengkalan Gawi jetty is an approximate 4 and a half hours’ drive from Kuala Lumpur and an hour away from Kuala Terengganu, the capital city of Terengganu.

2. Bukit Singa – hike to a clifftop view

things to do in terengganu - bukit singa

Bukit Singa is located in Pulau Kapas, a small but beautiful island off the coast of Terengganu. Pulau Kapas has breathtaking beaches and crystal clear waters, but 95% of the island is actually covered in hills and forests, so it’s ideal for not just beachgoers, but hikers too.

Bukit Singa is one of the more popular hiking trails here as the view from the top is second to none. The elevation isn’t very high and the journey will only take around an hour, but the cliff trails are rocky and slippery, so it’s highly recommended to trek with proper hiking shoes.

How to get to Pulau Kapas:

Hop on a 20-minute boat ride from Marang Jetty for around RM30.

Alternatively, Marang Jetty is 30 minutes away by car from Kuala Terengganu.

3. Sungai Bangan – a popular pit stop on a challenging hiking trail

things to do in terengganu - sungai bangan

Sungai Bangan is a pit stop for hikers who are conquering the Chemerong-Berembun-Langsir trail . This three-day hike starts from Hutan Lipur Chemerong in Hulu Dungun, around 2 hours from Kuala Terengganu.

It’s not an easy feat as it’ll require you to camp two nights, but the rewarding views of 370m-high Chemerong Waterfall, from the peak of 2,077m-high Mount Berembun, and of 801m-high Lansir Waterfall are worth it.

things to do in terengganu - sungai bangan underwater

Sungai Bangan’s waters are emerald in colour and unbelievably clear – a true natural wonder that hasn’t been discovered by many because of the challenging hike. The water runs deep – around 2.5m – so do practice caution when swimming.

Avoid monsoon season by visiting between March and October when the ground is dry for easier hiking.

4. Bukit Keluang – sunrise and sunset views

things to do in terengganu - bukit keluang view

Bukit Keluang offers some of the best coastline scenery in Terengganu. In fact, you can catch both the sunrise and sunset from the peak.

things to do in terengganu - bukit keluang

It’s an easy hike perfect for beginners, as it will only take 20 to 30 minutes at most. Plus, the trail consists of mostly steps, so no special hiking boots are necessary.

Bukit Keluang is around 2 hours away from Kuala Terengganu.

5. Lata Kolam Air Deru Ecopark – riverside BBQ spot

things to do in terengganu - lata kolam air deru ecopark

Lata Kolam Air Deru Ecopark is a humble homestay near a river that offers a bunch of add-on outdoor activities from archery, ATV riding, white water rafting, and more.

The place is ideal for groups of friends as they have capsules and cabins that can fit up to 6 guests (from RM80 per night). Bathrooms are shared and bedrooms are homestyle rather than fancy, so treat this as more of a campsite than hotel.

They also have barbecue pits free for guests to use, so you should bring your own ingredients to have a fun time roasting and feasting with your friends at night.

things to do in terengganu - lata kolam air deru ecopark river

Lata Kolam Air Deru Ecopark is around 2 and a half hours from Kuala Terengganu.

Address: Jalan Kolam Air Panas La, Kampung La, 22010 Jerteh, Terengganu Telephone: 019-693 1662

6. Tasik Puteri – park with a waterfall

things to do in terengganu - tasik puteri

Tasik Puteri Park (Taman Rekreasi Tasik Puteri) is a public recreational park featuring the man-made Bukit Besi waterfall with enchanting blue waters. Tucked away from public view, the waterfall is an easy 10-minute trek from the entrance of the park.

things to do in terengganu - bukit besi waterfall

Daredevils can also sign up for ATV riding operated by CEA ATV Outdoor . With rides priced at around RM180 per person, they’ll bring you through rough roads, streams, and bridges without railings, so it’s definitely not for the easily scared.

For newbies to the water, the tamer banana boat rides at RM10 per rider are recommended on a clear day.

Tasik Puteri is an hour and a half away from Kuala Terengganu.

Address: 23200 Bukit Besi, Terengganu

7. Kemaman Blue Lake – views of a former gold mine

things to do in terengganu - kemaman blue lake

The Kemaman Blue Lake is also known as Pepsi Blue Lake, because as its name suggests, the colour of the lake resembles the blue hues of a Pepsi can.

Of course, this means you should not swim in it, but the lake’s picturesque landscape and bright blue waters make it a highly Instagrammable place. So just keep a safe distance when you’re posing for the ‘gram.

An independent travel guide to Kuala Terengganu

Great seafood, sleepy city

Published/Last edited on 11th November, 2019.

The capital of the same-named state, for most Kuala Terengganu is just a transit town for those heading to Redang or Kapas islands, but if you have time up your sleeve, Kuala Terennganu is worth at the very least an overnight stay.

Why should you go to Kuala Terengganu?

Kuala Terengganu saw a burst of development thanks to oil revenue piling in, and while the couple of towering hotels overlooking the ocean from Jalan Sultan Zainal Abidan may convey an image of industriousness and modernity, at its heart Kuala Terengganu remains a small and decidedly conservative Malaysian town .

Sitting at the mouth of the Terengganu River, where it empties out into the South China Sea, traditional Kuala Terengganu has a small fishing fleet (though the traditional boat building has largely died out) and not surprisingly the seafood is excellent, especially from the city’s good supply of Chinese restaurants. It is also known for handicrafts and desserts, and is home to a somewhat underrated National Museum. We liked Kuala Terengganu as a nice place to hang out for a night or two, eating our way around town with a little light sightseeing (there is little risk of overdoing it).

The annual monsoon that hits the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia peaks between November and February. Large seas make boat timetables erratic and flooding can be a serious problem. Outside of wet season, expect warm and dry weather, and slightly lower temperatures between December and February.

Malaysia has quite a few school holidays in addition to nationwide holidays and this means transport, especially long distance buses, can get booked out. Across the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan some businesses may close and eating options during the day may be somewhat limited.

The main appeal from a tourism perspective is the small, but very pretty Chinatown area. The area was first settled by Chinese traders in the early 1600s and by 1719 held over 1,000 houses. It once backed onto a long river frontage on wooden houses, but this was all levelled to make way for a thoroughfare road and a sadly under-utilised park area. Chinatown itself can be walked top to tail in as little as fifteen minutes, but it is worth more time—explore the alleys and temple—and there are plenty of cafes and small restaurants to escape the heat in.

Kuala Terengganu’s latest drawcard is in fact a drawbridge . Crossing the Terengganu River it looks strangely out of place, but there is an elevator up to a viewing platform which makes for a good distraction in the late afternoon. Another secondary attraction is the Crystal Mosque , but it was looking a little tatty on our last visit in 2019. It is easily reached by a Grab taxi—get them to wait as you won’t need long.

Also worth considering is the “city beach” Batu Buruk . Long, and shady in places, the beach faces out to sea a short cab ride from downtown. It won’t rival the beaches you’ll see on the islands (if you are heading out that way), but the beach was pretty clean when we visited and there are plenty of eating options nearby. Visit in morning or late afternoon to avoid the worst of the heat.

Kuala Terengganu is a bit of a sprawling town, but the downtown area (essentially Chinatown back to the bus station, which lies conveniently in the centre of town) is easily navigable on foot.

ATMs are located scattered throughout the downtown area.

Where to stay in Kuala Terengganu

Jen’s Homestay is an apartment rented out by the room in an ageing apartment block on the periphery of Chinatown—it is also quite good value.

This isn’t a homestay insomuch as you’re staying with a family (though friendly hosts Patrick or Jen will meet you downstairs when you show up), rather you could well have the entire apartment to yourself if no other guests are in play. Set on the 13th floor, the apartment boasts a large veranda to take in the views along with a comfortable and spacious lounge and dining area.

Rooms (Standard 80 ringgit, family 135 ringgit) are smart and clean, simply decorated with some art on the wall (we had Marilyn Monroe), bed side lighting, chilled air-con and simple furnishings. The bathroom (and the entire apartment for that matter) was absolutely immaculate. There is plenty of travel information on hand and upon arrival Patrick walked us through a tome on all things Kuala Terengganu, with a focus on the food and where to eat what. They were also very accessible via Whatsapp with questions on the go.

The apartment building is quite rundown and the elevator can take forever, but these are minor quibbles on what is pretty good value lodgings. Just keep in mind that you’re not actually staying with a family. The location is very good—a short walk from both Chinatown and the bus station.

A relatively new addition to Kuala Terengganu’s accommodation scene, Suite 18 has smart and well thought out rooms at a good flashpacker pricepoint.

We had booked a double room (148 ringgit) here but due to a mix-up got upgraded to a triple (178 ringgit), which had a large double bed with a single bed arranged bunk style above the top of the bed. It sounds odd, but worked fine and would be ideal for a couple travelling with kids. The room was well sized and while it faced over the main street, the traffic noise wasn’t an issue. The bathroom was clean, though it was one of those set ups with the basin in the bedroom rather than the bathroom. There was also a small desk, flat screen TV and the WiFi worked fine.

Staff were friendly and helpful and delivered useful travel advice. Bicycles are available for guests. To the rear of the reception is Hidden Cafe, which does a good coffee and is, well hidden away—we preferred it to the ever popular Star Anise across the road—it also has better opening hours.

You pay a bit more here than at the neighbouring KT Chinatown Lodge, but we think this is worth the extra money. They also have capsule dorms (35 ringgit) on site though we were unable to see one.

The walk-in rate was slightly lower than what was available online, so perhaps give them a call if you are counting every ringgit. Reservations in advance are recommended on weekends.

Set on the main drag through Chinatown, KT Chinatown Lodge boasts an attractive shophouse street frontage which is not quite matched by the rooms inside, but the older couple who run it more than compensate with their friendliness.

Rooms (Standards 88 ringgit, Superior 98 ringgit) are large for the money, but decor is sparse to the point of non existence and, somewhat weirdly, the beds do not have pillows—perhaps they are not handed over till you check in. Rooms are set across a couple of floors above reception, with the best on the upper floors with multiple shuttered windows that can be opened to let more light and perhaps a sea breeze drift in.

If you’re on an upper floor, note the historic pics of Kuala Terengganu on the hallway wall, including those of the waterfront before it was demolished to make way for the road and neglected public park. The location is good and by the lobby there is a more in-theme veranda that matches with the street frontage, but it is a shame the rooms are so bland. Still will do at a pinch.

Kuala Terengganu has quite a bit to offer on the food and drink front, much of it conveniently centred within easy walking distance of Chinatown.

For breakfast it is difficult to go passed a bowl of curry noodles at Mei Fong Curry Noodles . They have a banner out front claiming to have the best noodles in town and while we can’t confirm that as we didn’t try everywhere in KT, they are pretty damn good. The old guy who runs the shop is also very welcoming and friendly. Open for breakfast and lunch only. Another, more local option, also in Chinatown, is Sin Phin Siang —as friendly as it is tasty.

Sticking with breakfast, we were tipped off to a tiny nasi daging spot on Jalan Banggol which made for a great budget breakfast at just 5 ringgit. It is takeaway only, so either take it back to your guesthouse or do as we did and wander down to the riverfront to eat it with the monitor lizards.

For coffee and tea, our two favourites were Hidden Cafe inside 18Suite and almost straight across the road, Star Anise . Both do a full range of real coffee in both open air and air-con settings.

Terengganu is well known for its snacks and sweets and a good spot to get them is Pasar Payung a short walk from Chinatown. Also fried anchovy snacks both in the market and in Chinatown.

For Chinese fare, Golden Dragon is popular and has a large English language menu, but note many of the dishes are based on serving two, so if you’re travelling along, bring an appetite. We’ve had the steamed grouper here in the past and it was good, but they also offer plenty of other fare. Iced beer as well.

Uncle Chua has a couple of branches, with the Chinatown one facing the river. Try the laksa—they’re not joking about the spiciness—service can be glacial though. You can reach it via one of the alleys from the main road through Chinatown, or just walk along the river and you’ll see it.

Cheng Cheng serves up standard one-plate fare in an open air carpark. Prices are low and the drinks chilled. You’ll get a better range of fare though across the road at Town City Food Court which, as the name suggests, is a small food court with a selection of stalls. Both of these places serve beer.

For lunch and dinner, Vinum Exchange came often recommended, and while the drinks are good, we didn’t think a lot of the food. They have a vast (and we mean vast) liquor and wine collection, so perhaps consider dropping by for a tipple after eating elsewhere. For a more typical bar, consider 45 Degree , also in Chinatown (evenings only).

Kuala Terengganu walking tour

Northern part of Kuala Terengganu town.

While Kuala Terengganu lacks much in the way of top sights, it is a pleasant enough town to wander through and the Chinatown section in particular is both interesting and has plenty of good eating.

Starting at the bus station, walk up to Jalan Masjid Abidin and turn right, following it past the glowing white Masjid Zainal Abidin and continue along the way. Eventually you’ll have the Istana Maziah on your left with Bukit Puteri behind it, and the river ahead, on the other side of Jalan Sultan Zainal Abidin.

Cross the road, turn left and start along the riverside following it around till you see a market on your right—this is the new central market (the old one, which is just a bit further down on your right) was being demolished when we visited in October 2019. If durian is in season expect to see roughly 765,984 durian vendors on the pavement in front. Go on, try some. This is also a decent place to sample traditional deserts and snacks that Terenngganu is known for. If you’re a keen shopper you could easily lose an hour or two in here.

More or less opposite the market is Bukit Puteri . The hill top is home to the ruins of a 19th century fort, a handful of cannons and a lighthouse, but the main attraction is the view rather than the fort. You can see a small throne, a pit for cannonballs and the previously mentioned cannons, but better to just bring a bag of rambutans with you and plonk yourself on one of the shaded park benches from where you can enjoy the view. Once you are done admiring the view, come back down to earth and continue along the river. This was also being renovated when we visited in 2019, and access was not possible, but we assume easy access will be restored once the work is finished.

Sated, continue ahead then veer around to the right after the market and start down Jalan Kampung Cina . This is the only easily accessible historic section of Kuala Terengganu and it is lined with some 170 traditional merchant shopfronts like you’ll see in Penang and Phuket. Look out in particular for the baby blue Teck Soon Heritage House —it is supposedly a museum but it wasn’t open when we were in town.

Continue on your way, go over the small bridge and then on your left you’ll pass first Ho Ann Kong (a Hokkien temple) and then the Golden Dragon restaurant. Just after this, on your right and very easy to miss, is a tiny alley named Turtle Alley which has murals and placards explaining the collapse of turtle numbers in the area.

Backtrack down the alley onto Jalan Kampung Cina and continue south; it tapers off when you have the Town City Food Court on your right and the Seri Malaysia Hotel straight ahead.

Once you’re here, stop for a cold drink and a snack at Town City , then continue ahead and take a right just before the Seri Malaysia Hotel. Follow this around and you’ll see it doubles back running parallel with Jalan Kampung Cina. This park area was the product of a land reclamation project a few years ago and it abuts the river.

In the distance you’ll see the drawbridge . You’ll need to take a right after the market to loop around to get on the bridge access road (we expect eventually a riverside boardwalk will take you there). Once at the bridge, take the elevator up to the viewing platform and enjoy a view over everything you’ve just been walking around.

Terengganu National Museum

Bukit Losong T: (09) 632 1200Sa–Th: 09:00–17:00 http://museum.terengganu.gov.my/

Set around five kilometres to the southwest of town, Terengganu National Museum is a sprawling museum that is worth a visit if you have some time on your hands.

Terengganu National Museum has a number of buildings and exhibits, the most obvious of which is the main exhibition hall—an enormous concrete model of a traditional Malay house. Within you’ll find comprehensive displays ranging from decorative kris and fabrics through to old korans and beautiful jewellery. The collections are pretty well presented and captioned. Outside of the main hall there are a number of outdoors exhibits including one on traditional boat building which may be of particular interest to kids.

While theoretically the museum can be reached by public bus, the service is so unreliable we suggest getting a taxi or Grab which should cost around 10 to 15 ringgit. Allow an hour or so to take in the full range of exhibits.

If you’re heading out this way it makes sense to also swing by the Crystal Mosque, but it isn’t in the best condition nowadays. It is most photogenic in the late afternoon.

Kuala Terengganu’s Sultan Mahmud Airport (TGG), is around 20 kilometres to the north of town. A taxi there will cost 25 ringgit. The airport is served by AirAsia, Firefly and Malaysia Airlines.

The main bus station is conveniently located in the centre of town and all the various bus companies have their kiosks around the edge of the station. Sample fares include:

Cherating: Get a bus bound for Kuantan and ask to be dropped at the turn off to Cherating. Not all buses will do this, so check before buying the ticket! Johor Bahru: Departures throughout the day taking 8-9 hours and costing 35 ringgit. Book now Kuala Lumpur: Departures throughout the day taking 6.5 hours and costing 44 ringgit. Book now Kuantan: Departures throughout the day taking 3 hours and costing 18 ringgit. Book now Kota Bharu: Departures throughout the day taking 4 hours and costing 17 ringgit Book now Penang Morning and evening only. Taking 9-10 hours and costing 40-50 ringgit. Book now

Public ferries leave twice daily to Redang from the boat landing near Bukit Puteri. Foreigners are charged 55 ringgit and departures are at 08:30 and 11:00 with a maybe departure at 15:00. Check the schedule the day before to be sure as the schedule can change depending on weather conditions.

What training or studies are needed to work in a travel agency.

Before we delve into the different courses that allow you to work in a travel agency, let's start by highlighting the fact that no diploma is required if you want to open your own agency or work in one. In fact, since 2015, it is no longer mandatory to have a BTS in tourism or a similar degree to create your own travel agency. You can therefore practice without a diploma, however skills and experience remain key elements for success. Let's not fool ourselves, creating this type of company, or even just working in it, is not within reach of those who are not passionate about the subject of travel and foreign cultures, and furthermore, it is never too late to train and learn. If you have no diploma to help you, but you want to change your career to become a travel agent for example, know that it will be possible to train yourself via your "Compte Personnel de Formation" (CPF). Inquire with Pôle Emploi to find out where your account stands and how much you have to train yourself. After having said all this, let's now take a look at the courses that are most often favored before entering the world of work in a travel agency. After high school: 2 years to obtain a BTS in tourism or operational commercial management; 3 years for the BUT (Bachelor Universitaire de Technologie) in commercialization techniques. Specialized schools also offer bachelor's degrees. After a two-year degree: - BTS in operational commercial management - BTS in tourism - Salesperson in business travel and tourism After a three-year degree: - BUT in commercialization techniques - Professional license in tourism professions: commercialization of tourism products - Professional license in tourism and leisure professions After a five-year degree: - Master of Science in Tourism and Destination Management

What is the scope of intervention of a professional?

On a daily basis, the activities of a travel agent are diverse and varied, so much so that the professional will rarely have time to get bored during their days, provided their agency is running properly. These tasks can be very different from one company to another. However, to give you a more precise idea of what to expect when practicing this profession, we will summarize for you all the main functions, as well as the most common, for which a travel agent is responsible: - To start, they must of course be familiar with their agency's tourist offerings in order to inform their customers and be able to illustrate their point with detailed information if necessary. - They must also be able to welcome customers in person or over the phone, with the appropriate tone, voice and warmth. - They must also respond to requests for quotes or information by email, which is an administrative task that takes a lot of time and requires organization and rigor at all times. - They must also select tourism products according to the customer's request, then present their characteristics in a constructive and, if possible, argumentative way (the strengths, the prices). - They must also advise the client on the different products (transportation, services), make the reservation, and then establish the contractual documents necessary for the commercial exchange. - They must also check travel documents in advance so that the traveler does not encounter any unpleasant surprises during their trip. - They must also establish the terms of settlement of a dispute or pass it on to legal or litigation services. - They must also provide information for monitoring activity supports so that the agency can have an overall view of its activity and its evolution over time. - They must organize the display of the sales space, with a certain marketing spirit. - Finally, they must perform sales promotion operations, especially during periods specifically conducive to this.

Why use a professional?

The idea of traveling is often a source of anxiety for those who are preparing for it, as there are many things to consider so that the trip goes smoothly and without any hiccups. In this section, we will specifically discuss the main reasons why you should consider using a travel agency or at least a professional in the sector to organize your trip. Preparing for a trip, even one of just a few days, is not easy. Certainly, a lot of information is available on the internet, but compiling it all to organize your future trip takes a lot of time. First, let's realize that going through a travel agency will allow you to save a lot of time. No need to spend several hours searching for the right flight or finding a hotel to sleep in, finding a rental car, etc. Calling on a professional means giving yourself more time to devote to other things that could also, why not, optimize your trip. Then, entrusting the organization of your trip to a provider means trusting the experience and know-how of a professional who has the required skills to organize a trip that meets your expectations and advise you properly, both in terms of tourism, legal, or even geographical aspects. Calling on a professional, contrary to what one might think, often turns out to be less expensive in the end than organizing everything yourself. Indeed, thanks to their relations with suppliers, the professional is likely to find very good deals for you and offer unbeatable prices, for example for flights, but also for accommodations. It is precisely the addition of all this that will allow you to save money. To conclude this section, we would like to emphasize that for each of us, safety and assurance during the trip are two essential things, regardless of the final destination. Thanks to their total mastery of the travel world, a travel professional will be committed to ensuring your safety throughout your stay. Furthermore, you will benefit from after-sales service and, in the event of an unforeseen circumstance (whether it be a canceled flight, an airline strike, or other), you can obtain assistance simply by contacting your travel agent, who will then take care of finding a solution to your problem.

When should you call a professional?

There isn't really a rule about this, as long as you don't wait until the last minute. Consider that the sooner, the better, so planning a trip to the other side of the world cannot be done overnight. The agent has to find a flight, accommodation options at the destination, and a whole bunch of other services that you might want to take advantage of once you're there. It is therefore better to start planning at least a few weeks or months in advance. This will also allow you to benefit from better prices, which is not insignificant. Note, however, that some agencies specify a maximum anticipation date, meaning that, for example, it will not be possible to book a flight or even a hotel 2 or 3 years in advance... but this is natural and almost goes without saying.

How to find a professional to organize your trip?

No matter where you are or where you want to go, finding this type of service is relatively easy, as long as you don't live in a too remote area. Whether you live in Kuala Terengganu downtown or in the deepest countryside, start by asking your acquaintances and loved ones, although it must be acknowledged that word-of-mouth is not necessarily the most effective way to find the rare gem (but you never know...). If you live in a very remote area, in the middle of the countryside, not finding a travel agency nearby (within 20 or 30 kilometers) should not stop you or discourage you; be sure that you will find an agency in the nearest medium or large city! In any case, rest assured that the right professional, once contacted, will be more than willing to make your life easier, and if necessary, subsequent exchanges can be done through emails or phone calls. If word-of-mouth yields nothing, which is very possible, then it is recommended to use the internet, by consulting a site like StarOfService, for example, which lists all professionals in a certain field, based on where you're conducting the search. In just a few clicks, the site will provide you with the contact details of the said professional and you can contact them right away, and this also applies to travel agents. From there, you are free to shop around or simply choose the one closest to your home, it is no longer our concern...

How much does a travel agency service cost?

The rates that we are going to indicate here are not contractual, but simply average values obtained throughout the French territory. Each agency has its own way of billing, so we cannot recommend enough that you ask for the details of the services from the relevant agent. Only then can you have a precise idea of what you are paying for. Having said that, let's now move on to the pricing, which, while not to be taken as exact figures, will still give you an idea of the prices practiced on the market. In general, it should be noted that the majority of a travel agency's income comes from commissions paid by the various suppliers involved during the stay; these are percentages that are taken from each sale made. Generally, the agent on average takes between 8% and 10% of the public price for a plane ticket sold; regarding other services, the percentage is between 9 and 15% of the public price. Consulting fees, act and reservation fees are also sources of income for a travel agency, but it is up to each brand to quantify its services. Therefore, you will have to ask the question or inquire when the time comes.

How to choose the right travel agent or agency?

No matter where you are or live, whether in a particular city, region or department, finding this type of professional is relatively simple, based on studies on the subject. So whether you live in the inner city of Kuala Terengganu or in the depths of the countryside in Moselle or Gironde, we advise you to start by asking around among your acquaintances and friends, as word of mouth is always a good way to find the right address for such things (we all know people who have traveled through a particular agency, so let's start by looking in that direction...). If this first search yields no results, it is then possible to use the Internet, as it is the most common way to purchase travel services, not physical agencies. Once online, no matter which search engine is used, we suggest consulting a site like StarOfService, for example, which lists all professionals in a particular field, depending on the location of the search and where you live. In just a few clicks, the site will provide you with the contact details of the professional and you can contact them within minutes to inquire about their availability, rates, etc. Don't hesitate to consult a large number of customer reviews and comments, as they are essential information for getting an idea of the level of service provided by the agent or agency in question.

Here are some questions to ask a travel professional during your first meeting:

- How long have you been practicing this profession? What training or diploma do you possess to carry out this activity? - What are your rates? Can I have a detailed breakdown of them? - Will you provide me with a proper quote prior to starting the work? - What are your availability to discuss my travel project? - Can you guarantee the respect of deadlines and rates that we agree upon?
