Jasprit Bumrah makes comeback as skipper for T20I series in Ireland
The squad going to ireland also includes the likes of yashasvi jaiswal, sanju samson and prasidh krishna..
Usually, a T20I series against Ireland wouldn’t mean a big deal for Indian cricket. The team from the Emerald Isle is a Test-playing country, but has not qualified for the upcoming 50-over World Cup. Their fortunes in the shortest format have also not been much to write home about of late.
But the three-match series in Dublin in the second half of August assumes significance as it marks the return of Jasprit Bumrah to competitive cricket after a long injury layoff. The speedster has been recuperating after back surgery. The stress reaction in his lower back could have assumed career-threatening proportions, but it seems now that Bumrah will be eased back into top-level cricket, with the World Cup set to begin in a little over two months.
NEWS 🚨- @Jaspritbumrah93 to lead #TeamIndia for Ireland T20Is. Team – Jasprit Bumrah (Capt), Ruturaj Gaikwad (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Sanju Samson (wk), Jitesh Sharma (wk), Shivam Dube , W Sundar, Shahbaz Ahmed, Ravi Bishnoi , Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep… — BCCI (@BCCI) July 31, 2023
He will be leading a 15-member squad for the matches to be played on August 18, 20 and 23. Bumrah led India in the rescheduled Test against England in Birmingham last year, with regular captain Rohit Sharma ruled out after contracting Covid-19 . The hosts emerged victorious to level the series 2-2. The pace spearhead last played for the national team in September 2022 when he was brought back, prematurely in hindsight, from injury with an eye on the T20 World Cup in Australia.
The series in Ireland will be followed by the Asia Cup, to be played in the 50-over format ahead of the World Cup, and an ODI series at home against Australia before the biggest event on the cricketing calendar this year. After previous setbacks, the selectors and team management will be wary of increasing his workload too much too soon, and will like to see how he responds to four-over stints before asking him to bowl 10 in a match.
Bumrah’s comeback, in time for the World Cup, will be good news for the hosts as his pace and nous could be the X-factor on Indian pitches that are not traditionally too helpful for faster bowlers. Most of the venues where India will play the other top teams are known to favour spin more.
More than the result of the three matches, it’s how Bumrah fares in his comeback series that will be observed with interest.
Others to keep an eye on
The squad going to Ireland includes the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson and Prasidh Krishna. The left-handed Jaiswal has made a blockbuster entry into the Test team and the wise men of Indian cricket have been impressed with his temperament. He could be an outside bet for a spot in the World Cup squad.
Samson has been given umpteen chances without having cemented his place, and Ishan Kishan has leapfrogged him of late. The Ireland series is another chance for him to make it count.
Krishna has already represented India in 14 ODIs, taking 25 wickets, and is highly thought of by those who matter. But the 27-year-old has had a chequered fitness record and has played only 11 first-class games in his career so far.

Bumrah, who had back surgery in New Zealand, has been receiving treatment at the National Cricket Academy for some time. He recently bowled his entire quota of 10 overs against a Mumbai team at the Alur grounds.
He missed the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia because he had been injured since September 2022. He also missed the 2023 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he plays for the Mumbai Indians.
Prasidh Krishna, a Karnataka pacer, has also been added to the team by the selectors and Ruturaj Gaikwad has also been selected as the vice captain for this tour

India’s tour of Ireland 2023 will begin on 18th August with first of the three T20Is at Malahide.
As India explore options for the upcoming T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA, they have made another big change in their squad. Jasprit Bumrah will be making his comeback after almost a year on the cricket field and as a captain. This decision gave a sense of exploring opportunities among the probables as a leader in the T20I setup. Bumrah will be leading the India squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Ireland in Malahide. Ireland have recently booked their tickets for the upcoming T20 World Cup next year along with Scotland after missing out on the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 .
The first game of India’s tour of Ireland will begin on 18th August at the Village Ground in Malahide. The 2nd T20I will be played on 20th August, and the final T20I will be held on 23rd August in Malahide. Last year, in 2022, under Hardik Pandya the team toured Ireland for two T20 International games. Ireland came closer to winning the final game, but somehow India managed to defeat them by four runs. Jasprit Bumrah will be leading the young Indian squad, with the likes of Rinku Singh and Jitesh Sharma getting their maiden call-ups in the series.
Bumrah’s elevation as a leader has also given a signal that Indian management is still not sure and is exploring the leadership options for the upcoming T20 World Cup, provided Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have stayed away from the shortest format from a long time. Kohli, Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja are all staying away now, and maybe the team will go with a young and new setup in the T20 World Cup. For Ireland, Paul Stirling will be the leader of the group against India. The series will be broadcasted live on Sports 18 on TV and Jio Cinema on digital platforms.

Team India set to get a new captain for Ireland series with a few big changes expected in the squad
Team india is set to play a three-match t20i series against ireland starting august 18 following the west indies tour..
As per a PTI report, Hardik Pandya and Shubman Gill could be a couple of big names to be rested for the Ireland T20Is as part of the workload management. Since Gill is part of the squad in all three formats and Hardik will have a big role to play in Asia Cup and then the World Cup one after another, both could be rested after the West Indies tour.
"Nothing is finalised yet and it will also depend on how Hardik is feeling after the one-dayers and T20s in the West Indies. There is travelling involved and only a short turnaround of three days before one flies from Florida to Dublin.

If Hardik does miss the Ireland T20Is, the current vice-captain of the team in the shortest format Suryakumar Yadav could be elevated to the role of captaincy for three matches, which has also been reported by The Times of India . Surya led the Mumbai Indians for the first time in the IPL in the 2023 edition and might be in the fray to make his captaincy debut for the national team as well. Along with the captaincy change, a return for pacer Jasprit Bumrah is also on the cards with BCCI mentioning that both him and Prasidh Krishna are in the last stage of their rehab.
