The BBC carries out both television and radio broadcasting in Britain and other countries of the world. The company operates several television channels in Great Britain. The BBC News Division is the world’s largest news broadcaster and publishes around 120 hours of radio and television production every day, as well as online news. With its excellent reputation, influence, variety of communication forms, and privileges, the position of the BBC makes it possible to attract talents, update forms of broadcasting, and produce quality content.

Meaning and History

BBC Logo History

One of the most famous media corporations in the world was founded in 1922 by a group of entrepreneurs as a private company. The first radio program was done on November 14 of that year. Just five years later, the company was granted a royal charter and nationalized by the government, although it remained independent in its editorial policy and enjoyed extensive self-government. International broadcasting began in 1932. Television programs were also launched in 1932, initially by Baird’s company, which later became BBC One as in the mid-sixties, the BBC opened a new channel. Unfortunately, with the beginning of the war, the broadcast had to be stopped until it was over. In 1967, BBC was the first to show TV programs in color in Europe. In 2003, the company started satellite broadcasting. The company’s 100th anniversary was celebrated in 2022.

What is BBC? The main motto of the company is “to inform, educate and entertain”.  Besides entertaining films and TV series, popular science programs make up a significant portion of the BBC content. Over the years, the company expanded its broadcasting to almost all regions of the world and added television and the internet to radio broadcasting.

1958 – 1963

BBC Logo 1958

It is interesting that until 1953 the company did without a logo. Since broadcasts were now done internationally, the company needed a good logo that would be easily remembered and instantly recognized. It was designed by Abram Games. The initials of the corporation were placed on square bases. The white letters contrasted well against the black background. They are bold and italicized and almost fill the squares.

1963 – 1992

BBC Logo 1963

The logo looks almost the same. The only difference is that the square base was replaced by parallelograms. This shape repeated the angle of italicized letters and created a more even frame around each one.

1971 – 1992

BBC Logo 1971

Once again, there were minimal modifications. They consisted of rounding the corners of the black bases. This way, they repeated the rounded shape of the letters. In addition, the square bases were spaced further apart, giving it a bolder appearance and making the corporation look strong and confident. Abram Games was the creative designer again.

1988 – 1998

BBC Logo 1988

This logo is a lot different than any other version. It brought back the square corners and added some color. The squares are not pitch black anymore. Instead, it is a dark gray color. In addition, the letters got smaller and used a different font. The most noticeable change is a colored line under each square. The colors start with blue, followed by red, and then green.

1997 – 2021

BBC Logo 1997

Martin Lambie-Nairn designed a logo that looked a lot more like the original one with a square, black base behind the letters and no other elements. The spacing between the blocks was made smaller again. However, he changed the font to Gill Sans, which made the letters look thinner. For the first time, they were no longer italicized and there was more space around them. As a result, the BBC logo looked more sophisticated while reminding about the corporation’s roots.

2021 – Today

BBC Logo

A custom-designed font was introduced in 2021. It was called BBC Reith Sans Bold and had a lot in common with the font seen in the previous logo. This logo featured smaller initials compared to other versions. However, the lettering was not italicized and the designers kept the black squares, which made the logo resemble the previous version.

Font and Color

The original logo used an italicized Univers Extra Black Oblique font. It was used in several logo versions, until 1992. The 1988 version used Helvetic Neue Black Oblique font, which looked very similar to the original one. In 1997, it was replaced by Gill Sans font, while the most recent one used a custom font called BBC Reith Sans Bold designed by BBC Creative Wolff Olins. With an exception of one logo, BBC has always used a black-and-white color palette, which gave the logos a timeless, classic look. The logo presented in 1988 was the only exception. It not only used dark gray instead of black but also had colored lines.

Social media posts have sparked fears of ill health in the royal family after some Twitter users misleadingly pointed out a change in the BBC’s social media branding.

The confusion was sparked by a tweet made overnight from user @FieldsLeaf, claiming that ‘BBC UK’ had changed its logo from red to black on Instagram. This was last done to mark the death of Queen Elizabeth II .

The claim made in the tweet is untrue. The BBC operates several social media accounts across platforms. Generally, the public service broadcaster’s main account – ‘BBC’ – will use an icon with its logo on a black background.

All its news accounts – including ‘BBC News’ – place its logo against a red background. This has been standard BBC branding for many years.

The social media misinformation comes amid fears surrounding the health of Kate, the Princess of Wales . Following planned abdominal surgery in February, the princess’ public appearances have been minimal, leading to much speculation.

Many Twitter / X users were quick to begin disproving the claims made in the original tweet, including Olga Robinson, Assistant Editor at BBC Verify, the broadcaster’s fact-checking and anti-disinformation branch.

There’s no such account as “BBC UK” on Instagram. There’s BBC News UK - with standard red branding, and general BBC account - with standard black branding. The list of accounts below clearly shows that the BBC uses an array of colours for its accounts, including black. pic.twitter.com/P8trjZiq5b — Olga Robinson (@O_Rob1nson) March 18, 2024

Despite the criticism, the original post remains in place, garnering nearly one million views and 3,000 likes. Many separate posts also followed after the original to further promote its claim, demonstrating how fast misinformation can spread on the platform.

The original X post has now been hit with an unremovable ‘community note’ beneath it which debunks its claim and provides context.

This feature was introduced to the platform by Elon Musk after his takeover in 2022. It has been criticised for sometimes further spreading disinformation and bias due to a lack of moderation.

The last time the BBC changed its red branding to black was for the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The social media rumours of another similar change sparked speculation of further ill health amongst the royals.

Rumours have been circulating about the health of Kate, the Princess of Wales, in recent weeks. In January, Kensington Palace confirmed Kate had undergone planned abdominal surgery, and would not be returning to royal duties until after Easter.

The princess’ public appearances have been minimal since. However, rumours of ill health reignited in March when Kensington Palace posted a Mother’s Day picture of Kate and her three children to Instagram which was revealed to be heavily manipulated .

In February, King Charles was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer following earlier treatment for an enlarged prostate. He has since resumed royal duties, and is believed to be undergoing regular treatment.

BBC is one of the most famous companies in the world. It is a British public service broadcaster that provides news, entertainment, and other media services. It was founded in 1922 and is headquartered in London, England. BBC is known for its high-quality programming, including news, documentaries, dramas, comedies, and more.

BBC building

It is one of the most-watched television networks in the world, with millions of viewers tuning in to its various channels. BBC also has a strong presence online, with a website, mobile apps , and social media accounts. It is a globally recognized and respected brand, and its content is enjoyed by people in many countries worldwide. However, we can be confident that BBC wouldn’t be this famous or have met such great success in the industry without its premium advertising and distinguished marketing skills.

BBC is known for its excellent advertising and instantly recognizable marketing that stands out in the industry and has helped them to make a significant mark. One of the main reasons that BBC stands out is its iconic and symbolic logo which is well known amongst the public.

BBC has a classic and stylish logo that is easily recognizable, symbolizing the company’s success. This logo has undergone a few changes since its creation and has been a major factor in the company’s success. The logo is one of the main reasons BBC stands out and has earned its reputation in the industry.

It is a classic, stylish, well-known, and easily recognizable logo, making it a powerful tool for marketing and advertising. In this article, we’ll look at the history of the BBC logo and why it makes such a difference within the business. The logo has undergone a few changes since it was first created, and in this article, we’ll talk about each one.

BBC logo 1958

1958––1963: The First Logo

The first-ever BBC logo is a classic example of simplicity and elegance. It consists of three black squares with the letters of the company name in white on a white background. The letters are enlarged and appear solid, creating a strong contrast between the white and black. This logo was ahead of its time, and the design is based purely on the company name. It is a clean and sleek design that has been used for many years and has become iconic. The timeless logo represented the brand for years before a change was made. It is a classic example of how a logo can be simple, compelling, and memorable.

BBC logo 1963

1963––1971: A Slight Change

The second BBC logo, created in 1963 and kept until 1971, is a classic, timeless design. It features a simple yet bold design with the letters ‘BBC’ in a bold, sans-serif font. The logo is made up of three squares, each containing one letter. The only change from the original logo is that the squares have been switched to parallelograms so that they are equal to the inclined letters, which are slanting to the right. The logo’s color palette has remained the same, with the letters white and black squares. The change to the logo is subtle, but it is a good change overall. It is a testament to the timelessness of the logo’s design that it has remained relatively unchanged. Its simple and bold design is a reminder of the BBC’s commitment to quality broadcasting, and its longevity is a testament to the strength of the logo’s design.

BBC logo 1971

1971––1988: Rounded Edges

The BBC logo from 1971 to 1988 was an iconic design that has stood the test of time. The logo featured a black and white design of three squares with the letters of BBC in the middle of each square. The only change from the previous logo was that the edges of the squares were changed to rounded edges, creating a softer look and a more comprehensive design overall. The letters were also slightly smaller than the previous design, creating a classy and stylish look. This logo was used for 17 years and was widely accepted and loved by the public.

BBC logo with color

1988––1997: Color Is Added

The BBC logo from 1988 to 1997 underwent a significant transformation from the previous logo, with the color of the squares changing from black to grey and the edges shifting from rounded back to hard edges. The most significant alteration was adding a line at the bottom of each square, which featured a different color for each square: blue on the far left, red in the middle, and light green on the right. The letters of the logo were also refined, making this the most significant change since its inception and creating a distinct and unique design that lasted for nine years.

BBC current logo 2023

1997––Present: The Logo

The current BBC logo used today is a simplistic and clean design consisting of straight black squares with upright white letters in the middle of each square. In 2021, the logo was slightly altered to make the letters smaller than before, creating an eye-pleasing and stylish design. This alteration was intended to modernize the logo and make it more accessible to a broader audience.

Lambie-Nairn’s design was a revolutionary step for the BBC, as it was the first time the broadcaster had used a logo that was not based on a coat of arms or a shield. As a result, the logo has become an iconic symbol of the BBC and is widely recognized worldwide.

The logo has also been used in various advertising campaigns, merchandise, and other media, further cementing its place in the public consciousness. The BBC logo has become a symbol of quality and trust, and its simple design has stood the test of time, making it one of the most recognizable logos in the world.

The Font

The font has a strong presence and is often used to represent the BBC’s brand identity. The font is also widely used in other areas, such as newspapers and magazines. It is a timeless font still used today and is an excellent example of a classic typeface.

The font is also very versatile, as it can be used for various purposes, from headlines to body text. It is an iconic font often associated with the BBC and its brand. The font is also an excellent choice for any type of branding, as it is a timeless and recognizable font that has made an impact.

Barcelona protesters throw items and spray travelers with water while shouting 'tourists go home'

Millions flock to Barcelona, Spain, every year to enjoy a sweet taste of idyllic European life. But over the weekend, thousands of people marched through the streets and sprayed visitors with water guns in outrage over mass tourism.

Protesters clapped and chanted “tourists go home!” and carried signs with anti-tourist slogans, arguing that the flood of visitors has driven up living costs for residents.

About 2,800 people took part, according to the Guàrdia Urbana de Barcelona, the municipal police force, the Spanish paper El País reported. But members of the protest group, the Assemblea de Barris pel Decreixement Turístic, which translates to the Neighborhood Assembly for Tourist Degrowth, say as many as 20,000 joined, the paper reported.

“The tourism and hotels is the group that really makes big money, but all the people are in a very poor situation and they don’t have enough money to live. That’s the problem,” protester Joan Navarro-Bertran said.

Barcelona is a gem in Western Europe, home to iconic sites like La Sagrada Familia — a cathedral designed by famed architect Antoni Gaudi that has been under construction for more than 100 years — sparkling blue beaches and famous local cuisine.

Tourism is also a major part of the local economy. Last year, about 26 million people visited the Barcelona area, spending 9.6 billion euros (US$10.4 billion) in the city, according to the Tourism Observatory of Barcelona .

A great part of the agitation among residents is the increasing price of housing and the displacement of long-term residents.

Rent has risen nearly 70% over the past decade, Mayor Jaume Collboni said, the BBC reported. In June, Collboni announced a plan to stop renewing permits for rentals used by foreign visitors by 2028, a move that would make 10,000 units available to locals in four years.

It's officially 11 July in England. On this date three years ago the Three Lions suffered an agonising penalty shootout defeat to Italy in the European Championship final at Wembley.

Will they get the job done on Sunday?

I feel drained and I feel like I have been out there myself - it is a great night.

At times you have to suffer in international football, the second half when it got tough they had to come up with different answers and they had to find a way again.

This team has done that without playing spectacular football in four or five of the games.

They have got an incredible chance of winning it.

Spain versus the world published at 23:56 10 July 23:56 10 July

Spain at international and club level have had the upper hand over non-Spanish opposition in 22 major finals since 2001.

At international level Spain have won their last three major finals, twice at the European Championship (2008 and 2012) and one World Cup final victory in 2010.

At club level in the Champions League there has been nine finals which have involved a Spanish side and a non-Spanish team - all nine of those finals have resulted in defeat for the non-Spanish team.

There is a similar trend in the Europa League with 10 finals involving a Spanish team against a non-Spanish side - again these games resulted in the Spanish club walking away with the cup.

Can England finally put a stop to Spanish domination in major finals?

'Hard to put into words' published at 23:52 10 July 23:52 10 July

England defender Luke Shaw, speaking to Uefa: "It's hard to put it into words to be honest. So, so happy for Ollie. I said the other day the people who haven't played many minutes, you never know when your chance will come and you have to be ready. He had an opportunity to come on tonight and took it.

"I'm very happy and privileged to be back out there on the pitch and getting to another Euros final.

"All that matters now is the one more game and we have to do everything to bring that trophy home."

Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk, speaking to BBC Sport: "I think the penalty moment is a big moment, England had some confidence out of it. Second half we could have scored to make it 2-1. To concede in extra time is tough. I think so many decisions didn't go our way but I don't want to speak about the referee today.

"Supporters in general are very important, they need to back us and be with us regardless. We've seen them in high numbers and hopefully they continue to do so.

"I don't think I should comment on that [penalty decision]. I'm very disappointed that we didn't achieve our dreams tonight. I need a good break because this season has been very tough for many different reasons and that's life sometimes but it's tough."

Steve tells me it was a “brilliant first half” for England and then “positive subs” clinched it at the end.

Anonymouse: If another manager had brought on two players who provided the assist and goal to win a semi-final, they'd be hailed as a genius. 'Criticism has been hard' published at 23:30 10 July 23:30 10 July

More from Gareth Southgate, on being able to celebrate with the fans after receiving criticism earlier in the tournament:

"We all want to be loved, right? When you are doing something for your country and you are a proud Englishman and when you don't feel that back and get all the criticism it is hard. To be able to celebrate a second final is very special. The travelling fans have been amazing. To be able to give them nights like this, and I think we have given them a few over the last six years, it means a lot.

"If I hadn't been on the grass I'd have been celebrating and watching like they were. We are kindred spirits in many ways but I am the one who has to pick the team. To give them a night like tonight is very special."

'I hope they're enjoying a few beers' published at 23:26 10 July 23:26 10 July

More from England boss Gareth Southgate on England's supporters: "I hope they are enjoying a few beers! We have had some incredible nights the last seven or eight years. These games have been dramatic because the goals have come so late. The only reason I took the job on was to try and bring success to the nation and improve English football. I am immensely proud to take this team to a final overseas. It will be a huge task but we are still here and fighting.

We are still here fighting - Southgate published at 23:24 10 July 23:24 10 July

England boss Gareth Southgate, speaking in the post-match press conference, on what it shows about his side to come from behind again:

"Character. I think definitely tonight we did not deserve to be behind. It was a moment. We started the game really well. It was a very complicated game because they kept changing the way they were building up, we changed the way we were defending. In the end players made so many good decisions on the field.

"I was really pleased with the quality of our play. I'd imagine it was a long time since England had 60% possession against a team like the Netherlands. It is the modern way and shows the resilience of the group. Ollie Watkins has trained every day and been ready to play, as the whole group has been.

"There's a lot of new players in the group, half have not been to a tournament but they have bonded so well, got each other's back and tonight was a good example of that."

Kane says he is fit for Sunday published at 23:22 10 July 23:22 10 July

England captain Harry Kane took a big knock on his foot as he won the penalty in the first half.

I’ve just interviewed him in the mixed zone and he says he will be fit for the final against Spain on Sunday.

Post published at 23:21 10 July 23:21 10 July

Ollie Watkins is just the second player to score a major tournament (World Cup/Euros) goal for England while playing his club football for Aston Villa, after David Platt at the 1990 World Cup.

.

England will face Spain in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin on Sunday after a last-minute strike from substitute Ollie Watkins sealed victory over the Netherlands.

Gareth Southgate's side looked to be going into extra time for the third successive game after Harry Kane's contentious first-half penalty equalised a thunderous early strike from Xavi Simons until Watkins struck.

England dominated the first half, with Phil Foden outstanding, hitting the post with one long-range effort and drawing a fine save from Dutch keeper Bart Verbruggen.

The Netherlands, who saw Denzel Dumfries' header hit the bar before the break, took control after the break and it required important interventions from keeper Jordan Pickford to keep England level.

England were facing another extra 30 minutes until a superb late strike on the turn from Watkins, on for Kane, sent England into their second successive European Championship final on a dramatic night in Dortmund.

From Weston to Euro 2024 final - Watkins' 'unbelievable' moment

  • Published 4 days ago

'Southgate stands on brink of glorious vindication'

England to face Spain in Euro 2024 final live on BBC

  • Published 2 days ago

Southgate’s England one game from glory

England’s victory over the Netherlands in Dortmund has left Southgate and his players one game from history and ending the so-called "years of hurt" stretching back 58 years.

The campaign in Germany has been a slow-burner, but the torch was lit on a sultry, stormy night and England now have the opportunity to finish with glory against favourites Spain at the Olympiastadion.

England will contest their first final on foreign soil after the 1966 World Cup final and the Euro 2020 finals were played at Wembley.

They reached it in a manner that has been their trademark in Germany, coming from behind then surviving anxious moments before another late show, this time from Watkins, got them over the line.

It also gives England the chance to make up for the bitter disappointment of defeat by Italy on penalties at Wembley in the Euro 2020 final.

Southgate and England have become synonymous with near misses at major tournaments during his eight-year reign but have earned themselves an opportunity to write a new chapter in their history.

For Southgate, another final is vindication in the methods that have come under such scrutiny after England’s indifferent earlier performances. Success in Berlin would change the narrative around his tenure forever.

And it was the introduction of Watkins with nine minutes left that was decisive, the Aston Villa striker providing energy and pace to trouble the Dutch defence, his finish on the turn across Verbruggen the piece of quality required to win a tight game.

England have suffered disappointments in the past and will be underdogs against Spain, but there has been a belief about Southgate’s team – even when performances have been indifferent – and they will go to Berlin believing they can finally claim the silverware that has eluded them for more than half a century.

England can face Spain with hope

England have stuttered and stumbled in Germany but they are still standing to make it to the end of Euro 2024 and the final against Spain.

And even though England lost momentum in the second half and the Netherlands looked more likely winners towards the end, the resilience and refusal to be beaten that has been a key characteristic once again saw them over the line.

England’s first-half performance was their finest at Euro 2024 by some distance, producing a fine reaction to the shock of going behind so early to a stunning strike by Simons after seven minutes.

Foden caused havoc as he roamed the central areas, seeing one shot somehow kept out on the line by Dumfries then another rattling the woodwork before the Dutch got tighter to stifle him and brought on the giant Wout Weghorst as a focal point.

Manchester United’s 19-year-old Kobbie Mainoo delivered a performance of maturity and drive far beyond his years, showing confidence and creativity in the high-pressure environment of a Euro 2024 semi-final.

England also leaned heavily on keeper Pickford, who saved crucially from Virgil van Dijk and stood firm when the Netherlands turned up the pressure in the second half.

Southgate's late changes worked like a charm as two of his substitutes combined to win the game, Cole Palmer's cute pass allowing Watkins to turn Stefan de Vrij in that late twist to send England to Berlin.

Kane and Jude Bellingham were peripheral figures but this England victory contained enough of the positives that have been missing previously to send them to Berlin and Sunday’s final with optimism and hope.

Match Facts

England have won just one of their last nine meetings with Netherlands in all competitions (D4 L4), winning a friendly match 1-0 in Amsterdam in March 2018.

This is the fourth meeting between England and Netherlands at a major tournament; the Oranje won 3-1 at EURO 1988 (thanks to a Marco van Basten hat-trick), followed by a goalless draw at the 1990 World Cup, and a 4-1 win England win at EURO 1996.

Of all nations England have faced 20+ times in their history, only against Brazil (15%) do they have a lower win rate than they do against Netherlands (27% - W6 D9 L7).

This is England’s fourth appearance in the semi-final of the UEFA European Championship; having been eliminated in the first two in 1968 (vs Yugoslavia) and 1996 (vs Germany), the Three Lions reached the final of the competition last time out at EURO 2020 after beating Denmark 2-1.

Netherlands have been eliminated from four of their five semi-final ties at the UEFA European Championship, with this their first since 2004. The exception was a 2-1 win against hosts Germany in 1988, when they went on to lift the trophy.

England reached the final of EURO 2020 – there have been five occasions of a team reaching the final of consecutive editions of the UEFA European Championship; USSR (1960/1964), Germany (1972/1976, 1976/1980, 1992/1996) and Spain (2008/2012).

Netherlands have won two different matches having conceded the first goal at EURO 2024, beating Poland 2-1 in the group stages and Türkiye by the same score in the quarter-final. Only Czechia at EURO 2004 have ever won three games having conceded first a single edition of the UEFA European Championship.

England have gone to extra-time in both of their EURO 2024 knockout ties so far. Only Portugal at EURO  2016, Spain at EURO 2020, and Italy at EURO 2020 have ever gone to extra-time three times in a single edition of the finals.

In Memphis Depay (17 shots, 10 chances created) and Cody Gakpo (13 shots, 11 chances created), Netherlands are the only side with more than one player to have both 10+ shots and 10+ chances created at EURO 2024. Indeed, one or both of Depay and/or Gakpo have been directly involved in 47 of Netherlands’ 74 shots at this EUROs (63.5%), and six of their nine goals (66.7%).

Coming into the EURO 2024 semi-finals, no player has scored more knockout stage goals in the competition’s history than England’s Harry Kane (5, level with Antoine Griezmann). Kane scored in the semi-final of EURO 2020 against Denmark; only two players have ever scored at this stage of consecutive UEFA European Championships – Viktor Ponedelnik and Valentin Ivanov, both for USSR in 1960/1964.
