The 15 Best Things To Do in Taupo, New Zealand

travel away taupo

Taupo is one of my favourite spots on New Zealand’s North Island.

I’m fortunate to have visited this bustling lakeside town three times now and each time, I’ve come away promising to return. There’s just something about New Zealand’s lakes that feels so healing for me.

Recently, I decided to visit after completing the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk (there’s another lake!), and Taupo provided the perfect place to recover, unwind, and start getting back to reality.

I loved it so much, in fact, that I returned four months later to spend another couple of days hanging out beside the crystal-clear waters of Lake Taupo.

What I Love About Taupo

So what do you need to know about Taupo?

Well, I casually mentioned above that Taupo is a lakeside town, but that’s kind of underselling Lake Taupo to you, because this body of water — the largest lake in New Zealand — is the same size as Singapore . It blew my mind when I learned just how vast it is, and I suddenly understood why everybody refers to it as the inland sea of New Zealand . On a windy day, when visibility is low, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were standing on a coastline, looking out to sea.

In reality, Lake Taupo is the crater of a vast supervolcano, formed after one of the most violent eruptions of the past 5,000 years. After blowing all that it had into the atmosphere, the volcano promptly died out and the extinct crater filled itself with water. These days, the lake is fed from a constant stream of water from the nearby snow-capped mountains.

And while Lake Taupo is now far more sedate than it was in the past, evidence of the area’s geothermal activity surrounds the town. You’ve got geysers, hot springs, and funky colours scattered across the landscape, and as you stand beside the waterfront, you’ll be unable to take your eyes off the trio of volcanoes in the distance.

Mount Tongariro, Mount Ngauruhoe, and Mount Ruapehu are all visible from Taupo, and they make for particularly impressive views across the lake. And speaking of Mount Tongariro — you can’t forget the Tongariro Crossing , which has been heralded as New Zealand’s best one-day hike. After having completed it way back in 2013, I can’t disagree with the assessment.

If there’s one thing Taupo is most famous for, however, it’s its adventure activities. Whether it’s jet boating, bungy jumping, parasailing, or skydiving, there’s something for all adrenaline lovers, and tourists arrive in town every day, searching for their next fix.

If, like me, you tend to hit the skip button when it comes to adventure travel, you’ve still got the small-town vibe of Taupo to soak up, plus the dozens of beautiful nature trails and the lake to sit beside with fish and chips in hand. One of my favourite activities in Taupo is walking out to the magnificent Huka Falls and marvelling at the sheer power this natural phenomenon generates.

In this post, I’m going to be sharing all of my favourite things to do in in Taupo.

(A note for my many American readers: prices in this post are listed in New Zealand Dollars — at the time of writing, 100 NZD is around 70 USD.)

Walk Out to Huka Falls

I can’t write about Taupo without mentioning Huka Falls.

This powerful waterfall is the most visited natural attraction in the entirety of New Zealand, and for good reason: it’s seriously impressive! What it lacks in height, standing at just 11 metres tall, it makes up for in strength, as a whopping 220,000 litres of water barrels over it each and every second. If you, like me, struggle to conceptualise that amount of water, let me tell you that it’s enough to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool in just 11 seconds.

The absolute best way to experience the falls is from the bridge crossing over them, along with the many nearby viewpoints scattered along the water’s edge. And while you can drive out to the falls, I recommend walking instead.

It takes an hour to complete the trek from Spa Park to the falls, along the Huka Falls Trail, and it’s such a lovely trail, weaving alongside the native forest, and I loved hearing the roar of the water getting louder with each step. If you only have time to do one thing in Taupo, this should be it.

HukaFalls Jet boating in Taupo

Jet Boating All the Way to Huka Falls

If you’re one of the longest of long-time readers of Never Ending Footsteps, you may recall my fraught relationship with jet boats. Back in 2013, I decided to jump aboard the Huka Falls Jet without so much of an inclination of what jet boats even were. The result? Well, I published a photo essay of the resulting trauma for all to see and giggle at.

But I’ve come a long way from that dramatic girl, and these days, I absolutely adore jet boats. Seriously — they’re so much fun! And the Huka Falls Jet ? It’s the country’s best.

While on board, you’ll race through a picturesque gorge, coming within inches of sheer rock face, and just as you regain your composure, jump straight into a 360-degree spin, before getting right up close to the waterfall itself, witnessing its power from metres away.

It’s an action-packed adventure, and you’ll be talking about it for days afterwards.

Skydiving in the Best Place to Do So

When you think of travel to New Zealand, you’re most likely fantasising about epic landscapes and adrenaline-fuelled activities. In Taupo, you can combine both of these iconic attributes and jump out of a plane in the country’s most skydived location. Yes, 30,000 people skydive in Taupo each year and for good reason.

You’ve got pristine Lake Taupo, snow-capped volcanoes, and coast-to-coast views of the beautiful North Island, all thrown in together to make for a particularly adventurous jump. There’s a reason why Taupo is known as the skydiving capital of the world.

And if you’re a Lord of the Rings fan, know that nearby Mt Ngauruhoe is Mount Doom from the movies! There’s nothing more badass than jumping from a plane over that volcano.

A 12,000 ft jump, with 40 seconds of freefall, comes in at just under 300 NZD . An 18,000 ft jump with a whopping 75 seconds of freefall? That’s priced at $499 .

Take a Scenic Flight Over the Volcanoes

If skydiving isn’t your thing, you can still get up close and personal with the volcanoes from the air — by taking a scenic flight over them.

You’ve got a couple of options here, with both helicopter and float planes up for grabs and you’ll be able to choose which area to see before you fly.

Go check out Huka Falls from above, soar over the trio of snow-capped volcanoes to check out Mount Ruapehu’s volcanic lake — pictured above — or head out over the rainbow-coloured geothermal landscapes to see them from a new angle. Hell, you can even sign up for a scenic flight over White Island — New Zealand’s infamous active volcano that erupted in 2019, killing 22 visitors — if you’re feeling particularly bold.

Book your floatplane experience with Taupo Floatplane (prices starting from $109) or your helicopter adventure with Inflite Experiences (prices from $195).

Check Out the McDonald’s in a Plane

Speaking of planes, Taupo is the only place in the world where you can eat a McDonald’s inside a plane without attracting a hefty dose of side-eye from the people around you.

The decommissioned DC-3 aircraft has been on site for 30 years now, having been purchased by McDonald’s way back in 1990. Seating 20 diners, it still has the original cockpit in the plane, and it makes for a particularly interesting place to eat your Big Mac.

Let’s face it: none of us go on holiday to eat McDonald’s, but if you find yourself with a craving, this is a unique place in town to satisfy it.

The Highest Water-Touch Bungy Jump

Taupo is all about the adventure activities, so you shouldn’t be surprised to learn it’s home to New Zealand’s highest water-touch bungy jump. Not only that, it’s also New Zealand’s only clifftop bungee jump!

Located above the pristine Waikato River, you’ll pay world-famous bungy-jumping company AJ Hackett just $120 to bounce down into those refreshing waters. You can jump alone or with a friend, and you can also choose if you want to be dunked in the river or remain dry. But where’s the fun in the latter?

If bungy jumping isn’t your thing, AJ Hackett also operates a giant swing in the same location. Attached to a rope that’s almost 50 metres long, you’ll leap from that clifftop and find yourself reaching speeds of up to 70km/h as you swing back and forth over the turquoise river. Badass.

Check Out the Maori Carvings at Mine Bay

Now, this is particularly awesome!

Out on Lake Taupo, there’s a spot called Mine Bay, and in that bay, you’ll find a contemporary Maori rock carving, 14 metres high, etched into the rock. I note that they’re relatively recent, as opposed to ancient, as a lot of people end up disappointed when they discover they were completed in 1980. Still, I think they’re pretty damn cool-looking.

Mine Bay is only accessible by water, so your three options for seeing them are by cruise ($35), yacht ($49), or by kayak ($115). The latter will allow you to get much closer, so that’s what I recommend. But whichever vessel you choose, the carvings are seriously impressive and well-worth heading out to.

Hike Mount Tauhara

If you’re looking to stay active while you’re in Taupo, there are so many nature trails and hikes to set out on.

One of my favourites, though, is the hike to the top of Mount Tauhara. Now an extinct volcano, its dome shape provides a killer workout — in a good way — and the views from the top, looking over the countryside are beautiful. The path can be a little sketchy at time, with tree roots and rocks to stumble over, but it’s nothing too challenging.

The trail is 2.5 kilometres in length — one way — and climbs around 500 metres in elevation. It takes two or three hours to tackle the return trip, depending on how fit you are — just head to Mount Tauhara car park to start your walk.

travel away taupo

Fish and Chips By the Lake

One of my favourite evening activities in Taupo is wandering over to a fish and chip shop, grabbing a takeaway, and eating it sitting on a patch of sunny grass, looking out across the lake.

Tasty Fish and Chips is my go-to place, as it’s right beside the water.

travel away taupo

Parasail on the Lake

While you’re having your fish and chips, you’ll undoubtedly notice the number of people taking to the sky. Parasailing is huge in Taupo, and it’s rare to see the water without somebody soaring high above its waters.

When you’re 1,000 feet up over the lake, you’ll gain a new perspective of Taupo town while simultaneously being able to look all the way to those volcanoes that I keep banging on about.

Big Sky Parasail charges $95 per person for a tandem flight. They can also throw in an freefall — don’t worry, it’s optional. From their website:

We have perfected the Parasail Freefall, which is the art of stopping the boat and letting you parachute 40 stories down to the water. Before you make contact, however, we’ll start the engine and you’ll be whisked back up into the sky. We like to call it Taupo’s fastest elevator! It’s not as scary as it sounds; it’s more of a slow, surrealistic feeling. When asked, everyone says this is the best part of their flight.

Do with that information what you will.

travel away taupo

Aratiatia Dam Water Release

If you’re on a tight budget and looking for some free activities to fill your time in Taupo, look no further that the Aratiatia Dam release. This works particularly well with the walk from Spa Park to Huka Falls — if you continue down the same trail, you’ll end up at the Aratiatia Rapids.

Water is released through this dam multiple times a day. In summer, it’s at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m., and 4 p.m., while in winter, it’s at 10, 12, and 2.

It takes around two hours to reach the dam from Spa Park — not including time for taking photos — so I’d aim to leave Spa Park around three hours before the water release. At 11 a.m. for the 2 p.m. release, for example.

If four hours of walking sounds like your idea of hell, no worries. You can drive to the dam, instead.

So what’s so special about it?

When the gates to the dam open, you’ll be able to watch in awe as a calm, narrow stream immediately transforms into turbulent rapids, with water gushing past at 80,000 litres per second. Fifteen minutes later, the spill gates are closed and the tranquil stream returns. It’s pretty wild to get to witness the power of nature like that.

There’s several great viewpoints for watching the water release — most people opt to stand on the bridge beside the dam, but I recommend venturing along the short walking trail to gain a better vantage point.

If you haven’t yet had enough adventure in Taupo, I recommend jumping on the Rapids Jet to feel the strength of the Aratiatia Rapids up close. When the dam gates open, you’ll be right in the middle of the action, on the river, powering through the surges and fully experiencing the forces of the water.

And finally, if you’re a fan of all things Tolkien, some of the scenes from  The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug were filmed right here in the rapids — in particular, the scene when escaping dwarves hid out in barrels which were then thrown downstream.

Hit the Cycle Trails

Taupo is a great place to get your cycling on, with dozens upon dozens of trails that are waiting to be explored. Even better: it’s an activity you can partake in year-round, as the free-draining pumice soil remains dry, even in the middle of winter.

I recommend Craters Mountain Bike Park, which is home to 55 kilometres of trails, all winding through a pine plantation and offering up a mix of beginner routes and hardcore options.

There are plenty of overnight options, too — from the 71 km Great Lake Trail, which encompasses the western shores of Lake Taupo, to the 85 km Timber Trail, which follows the path of old logging roads, interspersed with a series of exhilerating suspension bridges.

You can even tackle the trail that leads from Spa Park to Aratiatia Dam via Huka Falls with ease — we met tons of cyclists on our walk out to the falls.

Get Your Trout On

Let’s face it: I’m far from a fishing fanatic, and yet I can’t write about Taupo without mentioning the fact that the rivers surrounding Lake Taupo make this area the trout fishing capital of the world.

Yes, really.

People travel from all over to try their hand at fly fishing in one of the area’s six rivers. Most popular is the Tongariro River, where you can attempt to catch rainbow trout and brown trout — there’s detailed information on NZ Fishing , if you’re interested. You can even travel into the backcountry for a fishing-themed adventure, hitting up some of the rivers that are only accessible by helicopter.

If you’re travelling with kids, take them over to the Tongariro National Trout Centre , where there’s a children’s fishing pond full of trout for them to try catching. Our nephew absolutely loved trying his hand at this and he still can’t stop talking about the time he caught a fish and ate it for dinner that night! The trout centre will happily fillet and smoke your kid’s catch of the day, ready to eat, with the option of turning it into a sandwich with freshly-baked ciabatta. So fun!

Explore the Geothermal Activity

If, like me, you love your geothermal wonders, you’ll have plenty to keep you busy while you’re in Taupo.

The highly-active Orakei Korako was described by Lonely Planet as “arguably the best geothermal area left in New Zealand”, and I loved wandering around its mud pools, hot springs, 35 geysers, and colourful silica terraces. To get there, you’ll take a ferry across Lake Ohakuri, then stroll along the boardwalks crossing over the thermal landscapes. One of the coolest parts of the area is Ruatapu Cave, one of only two caves in the world known to exist in a geothermal field — inside the cave, you’ll find a vertical drop of 25 metres, to a shallow pool of clear, warm acid water, known as the Pool of Mirrors. Entrance is around $40 per person.

You’ve also got the Wairakei Terraces and Thermal Health Spa, the waters of which have been used by Maori for their healing properties for hundreds of years. These days, I recommend spending half a day dipping in and out of three mineral-rich hot pools, then wander over to the silica terraces for a Pamukkale-esque experience.

And you can’t forget Craters of the Moon! It’s an epic walkway through barren, moon-like landscapes, with bubbling mud pools, steaming craters, and colourful soil.

If it was down to me and I could only go to one place for geothermal activity in Taupo, I recommend Orakei Korako. It’s more impressive than Craters of the Moon, in my opinion. While Orakei Korako is more expensive, you do get more for your money overall.

The Best Day Trips From Taupo

The Tongariro Crossing

Hike the Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Heralded as New Zealand’s greatest one-day walk, the Tongariro Crossing is a truly remarkable hike. I mean, just look at that other-worldly scenery! Most of the time, I felt as though I was walking on the moon as I skirted past active volcanoes, snow-capped mountains, and glistening emerald lakes.

It’s a tough trek, coming in at 20 kilometres, or 12 miles, and climbing up to almost 2,000 metres in altitude, so it’ll take the entirety of a day to complete. Allocate between seven and nine hours, depending on your fitness abilities.

And That Was Taupo!

I love Taupo and believe it’s well-worth adding to your North Island itinerary. You’ve got the peaceful lake, the epic volcanoes, the geothermal activity, and plenty of adrenaline activities. What’s not to love?

I can’t wait to return.

Taupo Travel Guide

Parasailing on Lake Taupo in New Zealand.

Taupo is on the North Island of New Zealand and sits on the shores of Lake Taupo (hence the name). It’s part of the Taupo Volcanic Zone, an area that has had high volcanic activity for the past 2 million years. Lake Taupo itself is the flooded caldera of the Taupo Volcano (and the volcanic landscapes here are truly otherworldly!).

Taupo is my favorite spot in the entire country. I just loved the small town feel, sitting by the lake, and all the nearby hikes. I could have stayed here for weeks.

Taupo has tons of incredible hikes (it’s the jumping-off point for the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing ), lots of fishing and boating excursions, charming local markets, and stunning nature (including the impressive Huka Falls).

Think of it like a quieter version of Queenstown , the South Island’s adventure and party capital.

In short, don’t miss Taupo when you visit New Zealand!

This travel guide to Taupo can help you plan your trip, save money, and make the most of your time here!

Top 5 Things to See and Do in Taupo

Dramatic volcanic landscapes with bright green lakes below, at Tongariro Alpine Crossing near Taupo, New Zealand.

1. Go skydiving

Taupo is known for having the best skydiving in New Zealand. Lake Taupo provides an incredible backdrop with snow-capped mountains and bright blue waters painting the canvas for your descent. A 2,743-meter (9,000-foot) jump is 199 NZD while an 5,638-meter (18,500-foot) jump is 399 NZD. You can also take a full-day course to learn how to skydive on your own for 499 NZD.

2. Visit Huka Falls

This is one of the fastest-moving waterfalls in New Zealand, with over 220,000 liters (52,834 gallons) passing by every second (that’s an Olympic swimming pool every 11 seconds) on its way to drain into Lake Taupo. You can easily walk here from town in under an hour along a picturesque riverside path. You can also hop on a boat tour to the base of the falls for 42 NZD.

3. Spend a day at Lake Taupo

The lake is the main attraction in town, its boardwalk brimming with delicious restaurants and lakeshore hikes. It’s a popular place to go trout fishing, sailing, jet-skiing, swimming, and boating. The Mine Bay Maori Rock Carvings, a contemporary work of art carved into the rock face using traditional methods, is a popular attraction that can only be viewed by boat. A two-hour sailboat tour of the lake costs 59-69 NZD.

4. Hike the Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Considered the best day hike in New Zealand, this crossing goes through epic dramatic landscapes, including the spot where they filmed Mordor from The Lord of the Rings . The hike traverses Tongariro National Park, a World Heritage Site (for both its natural and cultural importance) and New Zealand’s oldest national park. The 19-kilometer (12-mile) trek is free and takes between 6-9 hours. Expect to pay around 40 NZD for return transportation (you can only park for 4 hours in the parking lot, so if you’re doing a longer hike, there are several shuttles available).

5. See the Waipahihi Botanical Reserve

Spanning 34 hectares (86 acres), the Waipahihi Botanical Reserve is a haven for birdlife and native trees. There are numerous walkways and themed trails (like the Floral Walk), beautiful lake and mountain views, and picturesque picnic areas. Admission is free though donations are appreciated.

Other Things to See and Do in Taupo

1. go bungy jumping.

If you haven’t tried it in any other region, do it here as Taupo is home to New Zealand’s highest water touch bungy (you’ll drop from 47 meters/154 feet above the Waikato River). There’s also the Cliffhanger Swing, which lets you swing up to 180 degrees, reaching a speed of up to 70 kilometers (43 miles) per hour! Prices start at 185 NZD. This is one of the more affordable bungy options in New Zealand.

2. Enjoy the hot springs at Turangi

Turangi is a small town located 50 kilometers (31 miles) southwest of Taupo. Here you’ll find a lot of geothermal hot springs. On the short (15-20 minute) Tokaanu Thermal Walk, you can hike through all the geothermal activity, and then end with a soak in the more developed public and private swimming pools (8-12 NZD). It makes for a relaxing afternoon after all the more extreme activities in the area.

3. Visit the Lake Taupo Museum and Art Gallery

This small museum, located near the center of town, contains exhibits on the Maori, volcanic events, and early European history of Taupo. A Maori meeting house is also recreated within the building and exhibitions by local artists are ongoing. You can also visit the award-winning Ora garden, filled with native flora and geothermal springs. Admission is 5 NZD.

4. Climb Mount Tauhara

This dormant volcano sits on the eastern edge of town and can be climbed fairly easily. You can start at the parking lot at the end of Mountain Road and follow the signs up the hill. (FYI: The start is a little steep.) The 2.5-kilometer (1.5-mile) hike takes about 1.5 hours to get to the top. There are a lot of birds around and the view at 1,008 meters (3,307 feet) above sea level over the lake is pretty remarkable. The hike is free.

5. Relax in Butcher’s Pool

Named for one of the first settlers in the area, Butcher’s Pool fills from both hot and cold mineral springs. This natural thermal spring is rarely crowded, and it’s free too. It’s located 40 kilometers (25 miles) from town, but if you can get out here, I highly recommend going.

6. Go skiing

If you’re visiting in winter, head to the Turoa Ski Area, home of New Zealand’s highest chairlift. Located in the Tongariro National Park, its slopes are suitable for all levels. Thanks to Mount Ruapehu’s southwest slopes and its unique volcanic terrain, this area is famous for its steep chutes, dramatic drops, and snow-filled basins. There is gear for rent or purchase, as well as a ski school. Day passes begin at 84 NZD (weekday) and 99 NZD (weekend) and become a bit cheaper if you buy a multi-day pass. A package including a group ski or snowboard lesson, lift pass, and gear rental costs 184 NZD.

7. See the Craters of the Moon

Craters of the Moon is a walkway that meanders through an otherworldly geothermal lunar landscape, filled with steam vents and craters. The landscape is relatively new, too, resulting from human settlement in the area. The main track is an easy-going 45-minute loop through the area, but you can add an extra 20-minute hike for better views from a higher viewpoint. It’s 8 NZD to access the trail, which starts 8 kilometers (5 miles) from Taupo.

8. Go jet boating on the Waikato River

If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, try jet boating on Waikato River, the longest river in New Zealand. You’ll hit some rapids, pass through scenic forests and volcanic landscapes, and get up close to the massive Huka Falls. Rides last around an hour and tickets cost 139 NZD.

9. Walk around Western Bay

Western Bay has some pleasant walking trails and scenic viewpoints. The Rimu Walking Track takes just 30 minutes and is a pleasant loop through beautiful forests. For something a little longer, try the three-hour Waihaha Tramping Track. The bay is just 45 minutes away from Taupo by car.

10. Go trout fishing

Lake Taupo and its rivers are a trout fishing mecca. The town of Turangi is known as the ‘Trout Fishing Capital of New Zealand’ and is a great place to base yourself to experience the best that New Zealand trout and fly fishing has to offer. A six-hour excursion costs around 350-400 NZD, while a full-day trip is around 600-750 NZD, though you can usually find guys who will just take you out on their boat for a lot less. Most restaurants in town will cook your catch for you if you don’t have access to a kitchen. You can read about my experience trout fishing here .

11. Hike Mount Ruapehu

Mount Ruapehu is a 90-minute drive from Lake Taupo and offers some excellent hiking. The Skyline Ridge hike can be done in 1.5-2 hours, round trip. The route climbs to an altitude of 2,300 meters (7,545 feet), where you’ll be rewarded by sweeping views of Tongariro National Park and Lake Taupo. You can also hike Meads Wall, which is a spectacular volcanic rock formation popular with rock climbers.

Taupo Travel Costs

Mount Tauhara, a dormant volcano near Taupo, New Zealand.

Hostel prices – Dorm rooms cost 32-34 NZD per night for a 4-6-bed dorm and 27-33 NZD for a dorm with 8 beds or more. Private rooms start at 60 NZD for a single and 80 NZD for a double room with a shared bathroom. Prices fluctuate a few dollars between seasons, but only a little. Free Wi-Fi is standard and all the hostels here also have kitchens for cooking your own food. A couple have free parking too.

For those traveling with a tent, there are campgrounds in the area. Expect to pay at least 32 NZD for a basic tent plot without electricity (with space for two people).

Budget hotel prices – Budget hotels and motels cost around 110 NZD per night. Free Wi-Fi is standard and free breakfast is common. Many budget hotels also have a kitchen for those looking to cook their own food.

Airbnb is widely available in the area with private rooms starting at 70 NZD per night (though you should expect to pay at least 100 NZD). For an entire home or apartment, prices start at 150 NZD per night. Expect prices to double if you don’t book early.

Food – Eating out in Taupo is expensive. It’s a small town, and there aren’t a ton of options to keep prices down. Expect a lot of seafood (New Zealand is an island after all), including crayfish, muscles, oysters, and snapper. Roasted lamb, fish and chips, and burgers are also common favorites. If you have a sweet tooth, be sure to try hokey pokey ice cream, which is caramelized honeycomb drizzled over ice cream.

You can find sandwiches, as well as the national favorite “kiwi pie” (a meat pie usually filled with steak, lamb, or chicken) for as little as 8 NZD. A non-fancy meal at a restaurant costs around 25-30 NZD for a typical main dish like a burger. Seafood dishes start at 30 NZD, while a three-course meal with a drink will set you back at least 60 NZD.

Takeout fish and chips or a fast-food combo meal (think McDonald’s) costs around 10 NZD. Chinese, Thai, and Indian food can be found for 12-17 NZD per meal while pizza costs around 10-15 NZD.

Beer at the bar starts at 9-11 NZD, a glass of wine is 12-14 NZD, lattes/cappuccino cost 5 NZD, and bottled water about 2 NZD.

If you choose to cook your food, plan to spend around 70 NZD per week for basic foodstuffs like rice, pasta, vegetables, eggs, and some meat.

Backpacking Taupo Suggested Budgets

If you’re backpacking Taupo, my suggested budget is 70 NZD per day. On this budget, you’ll get a hostel dorm, cook your own meals, limit your drinking, stick to free hikes, and use public transportation to get around. If you plan on drinking, add 10-20 NZD to your daily budget.

On a mid-range budget of about 205 NZD per day, you can stay in a private room in a hostel or Airbnb, eat out at cheap restaurants for most meals, drink a few beers, enjoy a few budget attractions (or one larger activity like sky diving), take some taxis here and there, and share a rental car to get around.

On a “luxury” budget of 400 NZD per day or more, you can stay in a hotel, eat out for all your meals, drink more, take some guided tours, rent a car to get around, and do pretty much do anything you want. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in NZD.

Taupo Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Unless you plan on doing a lot of adventure tours in Taupo, you can easily stick to a budget here. Your biggest expenses are going to be food and drink so limiting both will give you the biggest savings! Here are some additional tips to help you save money in Taupo:

  • Explore for free  – Taupo has heaps of free activities like hikes, visiting the lake, and going to the mountains. There’s always something to do here for free, especially if you enjoy the outdoors!
  • Shop at the Saturday market  – Every Saturday from 9am-1pm (rain or shine) there is a market selling fresh produce and local crafts. There is also an art exhibition which you can wander around for free.
  • Cook your own meals  – Restaurants here aren’t that cheap. I suggest cooking your own meals as often as you can to keep your budget intact. It’s not glamorous, but it’s affordable!
  • Stay with a local  – While there are not many Couchsurfing hosts available in the area there are still some. Not only will you get a free place to stay but you’ll get insider tips from a local!
  • Avoid the high season  – Prices will be upwards of 30% higher during the summer months. Avoid peak tourist season if you can!
  • Find deals at bookme.co.nz  – If you’re looking for tours and activities and are flexible with your dates, this website often has great deals. (You can find activities for up to 50% off!). Also, try grabone.co.nz for more deals.
  • Get a temporary job – If you’re running low on money and still have plenty of time left in New Zealand, check Backpackerboard.co.nz for temporary paying gigs.
  • Transport vehicles – Campervan and car relocation services will provide you with a free vehicle and gas as you drive it from one destination to another. This can be a great way to save a lot of money if you’re flexible with timing. Check Transfercar.co.nz to see what’s available.
  • Stay in a campervan – Exploring the Taupo region via campervan is a popular way to save money. Download the Campermates app to find campsites, gas stations, and dump stations.
  • WWOOF it – WWOOFing is a great way to work for your accommodation and food if you’re on a budget. In return for working on a farm or B&B, you get free room and board. It’s a popular activity with travelers because it lets you stay in a place cheaper and longer. You can do it for a few days or a few months. Keep in mind, that most farms require you to have some experience, as too many inexperienced workers have caused trouble in the past.
  • Bring a reusable water bottle – Tap water is safe in New Zealand so bring a reusable water bottle to save money and reduce your plastic consumption. For extra security, use a LifeStraw bottle as it has a built-in filter to ensure your water is always safe.

Where to Stay in Taupo

Despite being a small town, Taupo has some nice hostel options. Here are my recommended places to stay:

  • YHA Taupo – Finlay Jack’s Backpackers
  • Haka Lodge Taupo

How to Get Around Taupo

Sailboat passing by Maori rock carving on Lake Taupo in New Zealand.

Taupo is small town and you can go almost anywhere in town by foot.

Public transportation – If you need to get around the city, the Taupo Connector is the local bus. One-way fares start at 4 NZD. You can get a Bee Card to lower your fares to as little as 2 NZD. Bee Cards cost 5 ZND and can be loaded with money. There’s a weekly fare cap of 18 NZD, so you’ll never pay more than that for a week of bus use.

For intercity travel, buses are your cheapest option. The bus to Auckland takes around 5.5 hours and costs 40-60 NZD while going to Wellington costs around 50 NZD for the 6-hour journey.

Bike rental – You can rent bikes for 25 NZD for two hours. Expect to pay around 60 NZD for a full-day rental. E-bikes start at 85 NZD for a daily rental.

Taxis – Taxis start at 4 NZD and go up by 3 NZD per kilometer. Avoid them if you can since they aren’t cheap!

There is no Uber here.

Car rental – For a small car, expect to pay around 55 NZD per day. Make sure you have an International Driving Permit as they are required. You can get one in your home country before you leave. To find the best rental car prices, use Discover Cars

When to Go to Taupo

It’s best to visit Taupo in the summer, from December to March (remember we’re in the southern hemisphere). Even though it’s peak tourist season, you’ll have a pleasant temperature (22°C/71°F) and it won’t rain much. Moreover, you’ll be able to enjoy all the outdoor activities!

The temperature is not that cold in winter, which is from June-August, but it rains a lot and the hills are snowy. Expect daily highs around 9°C (48°F). Some businesses close down or have limited hours in the winter. That said, winter is a good season for fishing should you be interested.

You can also visit Taupo in spring and autumn, but the weather is a bit unpredictable. It’s much cheaper during this time so if you’re on a tight budget this might be your best choice.

How to Stay Safe in Taupo

Taupo is a safe city with a low crime rate, making it a safe place to backpack and travel — even if you’re traveling solo and even as a solo female traveler. Still, all travelers should take the normal precautions as you would at home, like being aware of your personal belongings at all times, and never leaving your drink unattended in a bar.

Crime (including petty theft) is extremely rare. While you still won’t want to flash your valuables around, you needn’t be hyper-vigilant here.

When hiking or spending time in the outdoors, be sure to check the weather in advance. Always bring water, sunscreen, and a hat. Be sure to tell someone where you’re going (and when you expect to be back) as well.

If driving to a hiking trail or park, don’t leave any valuables in your car. Break-ins are rare but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

As earthquakes and tsunamis do occur in New Zealand, consider downloading the Hazard App from the Red Cross. It has all kinds of advice and tips for natural disasters and also sends out warnings and notifications should a disaster occur.

If you’re worried about travel scams, you can read about common travel scams to avoid here . There aren’t many in New Zealand though.

If you do experience an emergency, dial 111 for assistance.

Always trust your gut instinct. Make copies of your important documents, like your passport. Forward your itinerary along to friends or family so they’ll know where you are.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance, especially if you’re participating in any adventure activities. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. You can use the widget below to find the policy right for you:

2 Days in Taupo Itinerary + Travel Guide for 2024

If you are planning a trip to the North Island of New Zealand then you need to plan to spend at least 2 days in Taupo!

Home to the largest freshwater lake in New Zealand, Taupo is a nature lovers’ dream! With plenty of hikes, adventure activities, natural hot springs, and loads of ways to get out on the water, your trip to Taupo will be mostly spent outdoors!

While you could easily spend 5 days in Taupo, you want to be sure to see more of New Zealand’s North Island , so I think 2 days in Taupo is the perfect introduction to this adventure-packed town.

This itinerary has everything you need to know to plan your perfect 2 day trip to Taupo!

A Brief History of Lake Taupo

Originally named Taupo-Nui-a-Tia after a volcanic cliff that perched on the East coast of the lake, one of the reasons that Lake Taupo is so special is because it is the largest freshwater lake in New Zealand.  The ‘Tia’ part of the name derives from the Māori explorer and Arawa Chief Tia, a man who came to the land with his people on the Arawa canoe and explored the North Island while his people made claims over land in the Bay of Plenty. Tia found no inhabitants when he first arrived in Taupo and laid his claim there.

When Ngataro-i-rangi (a priest) came and claimed to have been there longer, Tia conceded and began to explore again until he passed away. Tia is an ancestor to all the Ngati Tuwharetoa tribe who live there.

The Arawa were people originally from Hawaiki, modern-day Polynesia, and the underworld in many Mario legends. They sailed their Arawa canoes over to the North Island of New Zealand to settle there.

Things To Do In Taupo in 2 Days

Visit huka falls.

Visiting Huka Falls is exciting! Huka Falls are the most popular natural attraction in New Zealand. The largest waterfalls on New Zealand’s largest river, the Waikato River, these falls empty into Lake Taupo with enough force that it would fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool in just 11 seconds! You can hear the Falls well before you see them!

They are very easy to get to, just a 5-minute drive or bus ride from Taupo Town Center. With hiking trails surrounding the Falls, you can check out the Falls from every angle.

If seeing the Falls from the sidelines isn’t quite adventurous enough for you, you can take a jetboat or a cruise to see the base of the Falls and get right in on the action.

Go Bungee Jumping

When I planned my visit to New Zealand, I knew that this was the country in which I wanted to have my first Bungee Jump . Did you know that Bungee Jumping originated in Oceania, and the first commercial bungee jump was done in New Zealand by AJ Hackett?

Taupo is home to one of AJ Hackett’s bungee jumps, and the views from the ledge are beyond stunning. The jump is 47 meters, and you have the choice to dunk into the Waikato River below!

You can find updated pricing and book your reservations through their website .

Jump from a plane over Lake Taupo

Taupo is known as the Skydiving capital of the world, so if you’re going to jump from a plane anywhere, it may as well be in Taupo!

You will be treated to views of the mountains, Lake Taupo, and the nearby volcanoes where Tandem Skydiving began in New Zealand. You can choose between 4 height options for your dive; 9,000 feet, 12,000 feet, 15,000 feet, and 18,500 feet.

You can find updated pricing and book your reservations through their website – https://taupotandemskydiving.com/

Thrill yourself by trying the Bungee swing

If throwing yourself out of a plane or off a ledge isn’t your thing, but you still want a thrilling experience, you could try the Bungee Swing instead.

Only slightly less terrifying than the actual Bungee, instead of jumping you hang in a seated swing and the operators let you go, making you fly over the Waikato River!

See how the bees work at the Huka Honey Hive

Manuka honey is famous the world over, and getting to see how well taken care of these bees are truly warms the heart. The staff are passionate about bee welfare and sustainability, and here they stock the largest range of Manuka honey products in the country.

At Huka Honey Hive, visitors can wander the gardens, test out samples, and check out the bees’ homes both inside and outside. And it’s FREE to visit!

Spend a day on Lake Taupo

If you’re going to be in the town that is home to the country’s largest lake, then you simply must spend a few hours on the lake! You have several options to do this, from a lake cruise, a kayaking trip, a sailboat, or a catamaran.

While each tour offers something different for the price, many of these tours will offer a stop at the Rock Carvings. Click here for a comparison of the various tour options.

Discover the Ngatotoirangi Mine Bay Rock Carvings

While these carvings may look ancient, they were actually carved in the late 1970’s by Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell and they are considered one of New Zealand’s best contemporary Māori artworks. You can only see them if you go by boat, so be sure to book a tour !

Hike the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, aka Mount Doom

Getting the chance to hike Mount Doom was the entire reason for my visit to Taupo. This is one of the most popular day trips from Taupo, and you can either do the hike yourself or on a guided tour.  Unfortunately due to the weather, my hike was cancelled and rescheduled, but with the increasingly bad weather, I never got to go. While this was very disappointing, it meant that I got to spend more time checking out Huka Falls, the Bees, and hiking with my new friends from the hostel.

I would recommend making this a priority if you can, because not only is this the best hike in New Zealand but is often called the best single-day hike in the world.

Try to stay in the raft while White Water Rafting

If honeybees, bungee jumping, hiking, or skydiving isn’t quite enough for you, you could also try your hand at White Water Rafting.

With plenty of rapids around, there are multiple companies that will happily take you out for an adrenaline rush on the water.

Visit the Spa Thermal Park with natural hot springs

Close to the Huka Falls trails you can find the Thermal Park. Here you can find yourself a hot spring of the perfect temperature to relax in, with views of the Waikato River.

I had no idea this existed until I stumbled upon it while hiking.

Some of my friends told me we were allowed to hop into any of the springs, so while it was pouring cold rain, I stripped down to my skivvies and hopped in! Feeling the cold rainwater wash down on me while lying in the hot springs was incredible. And the best part? It’s free!

Two Day Taupo Itinerary

Here is how I would recommend breaking up your 2 days in Taupo to make the most of your time in this lakeside town.

Day 1: Bungee Jump, Huka Falls, Hot Springs, Huka Honey Hive.

To begin your stay in Taupo, start your day with an exhilarating adventure. Tackle your fears and choose between a bungee jump or a skydive.

Doing the bungee jump was one of my favourite experiences that I had in New Zealand, the other being getting the chance to explore Hobbiton !

Afterwards, head for breakfast at nearby Café Baku before you go hear the thunder of Huka Falls.

Once you’re sufficiently awed by the power of the falls head a few minutes over to Spa Thermal Park to soak in some hot springs.

Next up visit the bees and maybe buy some popular New Zealand Manuka honey.

For lunch and dinner, stop at one of the restaurants we mention below!

Day 2: Morning cruise on the lake, stop to see the rock carvings, Jet boat ride

Book your morning on the lake with either a scenic cruise or a kayak trip. Make sure whichever tour you choose makes a stop to see the rock carvings- check out these reviews to be sure !

After lunch, take a thrilling jetboat ride on the rapids.

End your day with dinner at a restaurant of your choice and sleep off your busy day.

3 Days In Taupo (If You Have An Extra Day)

If you are lucky enough to have 3 days in Taupo, then I HIGHLY recommend spending one day hiking the Tongariro Crossing.

I would schedule the hike for your second day, that way if it gets cancelled you have one extra day to try for it. Then do everything we recommended on day 2 on your third day.

How To Get To Taupo

Taupo is located smack dab in the center of the North Island, and as such, is fairly easy to reach!  By Air.  There are daily flights to Taupo from other airports in New Zealand and Sydney, and the Taupo airport is relatively well connected to the rest of the world with international flights. By Car . A quick 3.5 hour drive from Auckland , 1 hour from Rotorua , and 4.5 hours from Wellington , Taupo is easily linked to elsewhere in the country. I believe that the best way to see New Zealand is by car, so adding Taupo to your New Zealand Road trip is a great idea. By Bus . If you don’t want to fly or drive yourself, you can take the bus to Taupo. The run time is about 5 hours, with multiple buses daily.

How To Get Around Taupo

One of the great things about Taupo is that it is a small town, and very walkable.

I would recommend renting a car just so you can get more done quicker, but honestly, a 25-minute walk across town isn’t bad, especially when the views are as beautiful as they are in Taupo!

Where To Stay In Taupo

One of the noteworthy things about New Zealand as a whole, not just Taupo, is how there are great accommodations for any budget.

If luxury is what you’re after you’re sure to find plenty of options, including award-winning luxury hotels, but it is equally easy to find accommodations for backpacker hostels, campgrounds, Bed & Breakfasts, holiday apartments, motels, and hotels for every budget.

Best hostel in Taupo: Finlay Jack’s YHA Hostel

When I stayed here it was called Blackcurrants Backpacker Hostel. It has been upgraded to a YHA Hostel, but the welcoming vibe is still the same. Some of my best memories in Taupo either took place in this hostel or with friends I made here. Located near the center of town with a communal kitchen, lounges, an outdoor BBQ area, and plenty of activities that can be booked through the office, Finlay Jack’s is the perfect place to settle on a budget.  With plenty of room options from your traditional dorm rooms, private rooms, and new pod beds, you can choose which style suits your travel preference. Click here to book .

Best Budget Hotel in Taupo: Haka Lodges Taupo

Haka Lodges call themselves premier backpacker accommodation, and while there are dorm rooms, there are also private rooms if you prefer to relax in your own room.

With a BBQ area, outdoor deck, fully equipped kitchen, unlimited Wi-Fi, and on-site laundry, you get quite a lot for what you pay for! Click here to book.

Best Mid-range Hotel in Taupo: Baycrest Lodge

The rooms are large and clean at Baycrest , and like most accommodations in Taupo the hotel is afforded beautiful views, but what makes Baycrest special is that all first-floor suites have their own thermal pools, which fill up when you choose with water from the geothermal hot springs running underneath the hotel! If your room happens to not be on the first floor don’t worry, you will be rewarded with stunning views of Taupo and can still use the outdoor communal thermal pool. Click here to book.

Best Luxury Hotel in Taupo: Acacia Cliffs Lodge

If you want luxury, then a stay at Acacia Cliffs Lodge is exactly what you want! With just four private suites, a stay here feels exclusive.

You will be treated to a gourmet breakfast daily, and a complimentary bottle of New Zealand wine upon arrival.  Each room has either its own private deck or courtyard, and there are daily before-dinner canapes and a drink.  Click here to book.

Where To Eat In Taupo

Pauly’s Diner : Famous for being home to Taupo’s best fried chicken and burgers, Pauly’s Diner is sure to satisfy those burger and fries cravings. The burgers are gourmet, the fries are loaded, the chicken is crispy, and it’s only a 5-minute walk from Finlay Jack’s!

The Bantry:   Located in a refurbished home and family-run, The Bantry is run by two sisters and serves New Zealand and European-inspired cuisine while upstairs their parents run ZeaYou Gallery, a gallery for New Zealand artists that is home to paintings, sculpture, prints, ceramics, and more.

Plateau Bar + Eatery:   Opening nearly 20 years ago, Plateau Bar is a Taupo classic. The food changes seasonally, ensuring you get the highest quality ingredients and fresh taste.

Embra:  Combining modern Kiwi cuisine with French and British-inspired techniques, at Embra you will find fresh ingredients from local producers. The menu changes seasonally, and Embra prides itself on sustainability.

Frequently asked questions about Taupo

Yes, you can swim in Lake Taupo! The water is very clean, there are no bugs in the water, and the lake is a freshwater lake, so you don’t need to worry about saltwater hair or your eyes stinging.  There are even boat free designated spots specifically for swimmers.

Absolutely! Taupo is a beautiful place to spend a few days, with boundless adventures to be had. It would be unfortunate to miss the opportunity to see the enormous Lake Taupo.

From my experience, two days are the perfect introduction to Taupo, but if you could extend, then 3 to 4 days would allow you to fit in everything Taupo has to offer. Taupo is small yet mighty, and I only had 2 days there but could have easily extended my stay a few extra days.

Now that you have all the information you need to plan the perfect Taupo getaway, its time to plan your trip!

Taupo travel guide

Taupo tourism | taupo guide, you're going to love taupo.

Taupo is a mix of people who simply want to luxuriate in the natural surroundings and beauty all around and adrenaline-loving thrill-seekers who take on the incredible mountains and choppy waters. No matter why you arrive, you're sure to think: "I could get used to this way of life!"

Top 5 Reasons to Visit Taupo

1. take part in any outdoor adventure.

Skiing, bungee-jumping, kayaking, tandem skydives, parasailing, mountain biking, white-water rafting: if there's an outdoor activity your heart has been yearning for, you can do it in Taupo.

2. Decipher the Maori Rock Carvings at Mine Bay

Taupo has a rich indigenous history. You can kayak out to the carvings on Mine Bay, featuring huge faces and smaller historical figurines, a testament to the Maori people.

3. Conquer Mt. Tauhara

The infamous Mt. Tauhara is actually a dormant volcano. If you manage to reach the top, you'll be rewarded with incredible views of Taupo and the Central North Island.

4. Splash Around at Action World Taupo

Action World, with its splash and wave pools and water slides, is a great draw for families or simply those who love water parks.

5. Stroll in the Waipahihi Botanical Reserve

Created from scratch, the Waipahihi Botanical Reserve is a sprawling 35 hectares of rare alpine plants, rhododendrons, azaleas, and camellias.

What to do in Taupo

1. a freshwater dream.

Whether you like fishing or just enjoy being in the outdoors, Lake Taupo is sure to take your breath away. This is the second largest freshwater lake in the world and the largest lake in New Zealand by surface area. However, it's not just the size that's impressive about this lake - it's the sheer blue and towering mountains behind it that make it so breathtaking. Perfect for fishing, cycling or just exploring, Lake Taupo should be on the top of your list of things to do in Taupo.

2. White Water Like You'Ve Never Seen Before

This is easily one of the most impressive white water falls in New Zealand. The water is so blue it almost looks fake and the power of the rushing water is incredible. Huka Falls is made up of several waterfalls and goes through a shocking 220,000 liters per second. It's hard to imagine anything rushing that quickly, so although it's stunning, make sure to keep your feet firmly planted on land!

3. Small But Mighty

The Taupo Museum on the face of it looks a little pokey. You might wonder why you should go there, but really this could be one of the highlights of the trip. New Zealand has a rich culture, and it's once you start getting outside of the cities you really experience it. The Taupo Museum details the history of the area, the culture of the people who lived there and the stories of the current community. Not only is there a local art gallery, but also history, stories and artifacts from the area, as well as a garden.

4. The Eye Of Sauron

If you're a Lord of the Rings fan (and even if you're not) this is an absolute must-see if you're coming to Taupo. What was known as Mount Doom in the films is the real-life Mount Ngauruhoe. If you aren't much of a hiker and would rather just see the mountain, you can actually get a pretty great view of it from Lake Taupo. However, if you feel like venturing up the volcano, make sure you read up and are prepared for the journey. Be aware that it is an active volcano and its last eruption was in 1977.

5. Without Leaving Earth

Although Taupo is not the geothermal center of New Zealand, that doesn't mean there's no geothermal activity for you to experience. Craters of the Moon looks exactly as it sounds - like you've just stepped off the earth into a world completely unknown. Big craters filled with steam swirling around, water that's boiling naturally and the smell of sulfur will certainly convince you you're no longer in New Zealand or on our world at all. Although it's a great site, make sure to stay on the designated paths.

Where to Eat in Taupo

A local Taupo favorite is Spoon and Paddle. This youthful and relaxed cafe serves up everything from freshly brewed, fair trade coffee to local beers and melting lamb shoulder tortillas. Mains cost between NZ$12 - NZ$19.

When to visit Taupo

The activities you want to partake in will determine the "best" time to go. There are four distinct seasons with a mild summer, perfect for beach-going, and a cool winter which, coupled with the area's mountainous terrain, makes skiing a viable activity. The climate is cooler in Taupo than anywhere else, in general, because of its high elevation.

How to Travel From Taupo to Wellington by Plane, Bus, and Car

travel away taupo

Lake Taupo is the largest lake in New Zealand located in the center of North Island, 230 miles (372 kilometers) away from the capital city of Wellington. The lake is actually the water-filled caldera of the Taupo Volcano, which has been inactive for about 1,800 years, and the city of Taupo sits on the northeastern corner of the lake in Acacia Bay.

A major recreation area, many people visit Lake Taupo for hiking, water sports, and adrenaline-inducing activities like sky diving and bungee jumping, before continuing onto Wellington, which is located at the southernmost tip of the North Island. If you're in a hurry, it's possible to fly between Taupo and Wellington, but many people prefer to travel by bus or car, either to save money or to see more of New Zealand's famously green and scenic landscapes along the way.

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get From Taupo to Wellington?

On Intercity , you can find the bus tickets from Taupo to Wellington for as cheap as $16. Five or six buses run daily and there are even night buses that leave Taupo just after midnight and arrive in Wellington between 6 and 7 a.m. You will still pass through many scenic areas along this route, but you will not have the freedom to stop for a detour. The bus, which will take at least 6 hours, will drop you off at Wellington Central, which is located on Waterloo Quay between the Beehive , a distinct-looking government building, and the Bluebridge Ferry , which you can take to reach the South Island .

What Is the Fastest Way to Get From Taupo to Wellington?

The quickest way to get from Taupo to Wellington is to take a plane, but your flight options will be somewhat limited. The only way to fly direct to Wellington is by booking a seat on Sounds Air , a low-cost airline that operates a small fleet of five single-engine aircraft. The flight takes just one hour, but there are only two flights scheduled per day.

Despite being the country's largest airline, Air New Zealand does not offer any direct flights between Taupo and Wellington. However, they do offer the cheapest tickets, which can sometimes be found for as low as $56, but these routes require transferring in Auckland , which will add a few hours to your total transit time.

How Long Does It Take to Drive?

If you drive without stopping, it should only take you about 5 hours to complete this 232-mile (374-kilometer) route. Be aware that the early part of the journey can be hazardous in the winter, especially from south of Turangi to Waiouru, where the main highway is often closed due to snow. Check the weather and road conditions via the official government website before you leave.

When Is the Best Time to Travel to Wellington?

The weather in Wellington is notoriously always windy, but to avoid the worst of the gusts and gales, you'll want to visit in the summer or fall—which in this southern hemisphere city means between the months of December and May. Although temperatures don't vary much year-round, February tends to be the warmest month, while July is usually the rainiest month. If the weather doesn't make much of a difference to you, consider planning your trip around some of the city's key cultural events like the Festival of the Arts and Fringe Comedy Festival , which both take place in February and March, or September's World of Wearable Art , an art and fashion competition that attracts designers from around the world.

What's the Most Scenic Route to Wellington?

The straight route to Wellington is easy enough to do in one day, but if you have the time to spare, you'd be remiss to miss out on the North Island's other natural attractions. For example, Tongariro , New Zealand's oldest national park and a UNESCO heritage site, is right at the base of Lake Taupo. Here, you can complete one of the most popular hikes in all of New Zealand—a 12-mile (19-kilometer) alpine crossing through a landscape filled with craters and fluorescent thermal lakes. Near the city of Taihape, which you'll pass a third of the way into the hike, you'll see steep and unusual hill formations, and at the Mangaweka Gorge, where the main highway meets the Rangitikei River, there are several lookout points on the road which give a great view.

If you don't mind going far out of the way and adding a few hours to your trip, you might consider turning west to visit Mount Taranaki , an active volcano that is strikingly similar in appearance to Japan's Mount Fuji. Visiting Taranaki will add about 4 hours of driving time to your trip, but you'll be able to see the North Island's west coast, which has some great beaches like Tongaporutu—famous for its elephant-shaped rock formation.

Can I Use Public Transportation to Travel From the Airport?

The Wellington International Airport (WLG) is just 4 miles (7 kilometers) from the city center. It's a short cab ride, but you could also take advantage of the Airport Flyer Bus, which offers transfers to the Wellington Railway and Lower Hutt, one of the city's outer neighborhoods. On weekends, it runs every 10 minutes from 6:30 to 9 a.m. and 2 to 7 p.m. and at all other times during the week, it runs every 20 minutes. One-way tickets begin at $7. If you'd rather save some money and take public transportation, you can take the Number 2 bus from the airport into town.

What Is There to Do in Wellington?

New Zealand's political capital, Wellington is also often described as the cultural capital of the country. With a magnificent harbor, great cafes and nightlife, and many cultural and artistic events happening, it's a truly international city. The Weta Cave Workshop , the world's top special effects studio, is a must-visit for fantasy film fans. The Te Papa Museum offers a comprehensive overview of New Zealand's history, from the origins of the indigenous Maori culture to the science of the islands' rare ecology. For the best views of Wellington, you can ride the cable car up to the botanical gardens or hike up to Mount Victoria Lookout .

If you drive without stopping, it will take about 5 hours. Hazardous conditions in winter can extend that time further or force you to take a different route.

Along the way, you can explore Tongariro, New Zealand's oldest national park. Or farther out of the way is Mount Taranaki, an active volcano similar in appearance to Japan's Mount Fuji.

Lake Taupo, located in the center of North Island, is 230 miles (372 kilometers) away from the capital city of Wellington.
