15 Best Things to Do in Oran (Algeria)

The city of Oran is a beautiful coastal city that, when constructed, was inspired by the seaside resort of France’s Nice. It is one of Algeria’s most important cities, as it has much cultural, commercial and industrial importance, as well as being one of the country’s most visited cities. In the past, the city was used for trading purposes until it was ruled by the French.

Oran features a long boulevard that is lined with restaurants, cafés, and ice cream parlours. It also boasts fantastic views of the coast, the magnificent surrounding cliffs and the harbour. The city also has numerous other facilities and amenities for tourists, including a few luxury resorts. There is much to see and do in and around the city, which makes it a very appealing destination. Here are the 15 best things to do in Oran.

1. Walk around the city centre

Cathédrale du Sacré-Cœur d'Oran

Oran’s city centre is filled with numerous impressive French-built buildings. It is quite interesting, and like taking a trip back to 1940s France.

One of the buildings you will see on this walk is the Cathédrale du Sacré-Cœur d’Oran, which was the first French cathedral built in the country. The cathedral is now home to a library.

You will also stumble upon Place du 1er Novembre; Oran’s main square. The square features a lovely fountain and monument that is surrounded by buildings, like the town hall.

2. Admire the city from above

Fort Santa Cruz

Fort Santa Cruz sits on Mount Murdjadjo around 400 metres above sea level. The fort was built by the Ottomans and Spaniards in the 17th century in a strategic location overlooking the city, the Mers El Kébir port and the Medeterranian Sea.

There is a magnificent castle and chapel on site, as well as a massive statue of the Virgin Mary. The statue is said to be a replica of the one at Notre Dame de la Garde in Marseilles.

It is well worth making the hike up to Fort Santa Cruz to admire the spectacular views. It also makes for a great escape outside of the lively city.

3. Visit a synagogue converted mosque

The Great Synagogue of Oran

Yes, that’s right. The Abdallah Ibn Salam Mosque used to be the Great Synagogue of Oran. It was once one of North Africa’s largest synagogues.

By the time the country gained its independence, nearly all Algerian Jews had moved to France. It also made the country predominately Muslim.

The Great Synagogue of Oran was built in 1880, but inaugurated in 1918. It became the Abdallah Ibn Salam Mosque in the 1960s and was named after a 7th-century Jew that converted to Islam.

4. Go back in time

Sidi el Houari district

The Sidi el Houari district is the first ever district in Oran. It is split into three quarters, each of which has its own charm.

Casbah is the oldest part of the district and the city. Saint-Louis is built around the church that bares the same name, while the old port area sits along the coast below the Aïdour.

The entire Sidi el Houari district overlooks the sea, as it is built along the slopes of the Aïdour and Wadi Rhi. It is highly recommended to explore the district on foot and gaze at the historic buildings.

5. Eat fine food with a view

Sheraton Oran Hotel & Towers

The Le Ciel D’Oran Restaurant in the Sheraton Oran Hotel & Towers is famous for its exceptional evening views of the city. The seafood served at the restaurant is also very good and combined, makes for a great night.

Le Méridien Oran Hotel & Convention Centre also boasts a restaurant that offers magnificent views of the Mediterranean Sea. It also has a cosy lounge where guests and non-guests can enjoy a cocktail while taking in the beautiful views of the sea.

6. Shop with the locals

Medina Jdida

The Medina Jdida area is the commercial hub of Oran and is known today as the market neighbourhood. In the past, this area of the city was designed to house the black population.

Marche Medina Jedida is a massive market that sells everything from flowers to souvenirs. It is the best place for tourists to head to for bargain clothing, textiles, jewellery and other souvenirs.

Bargaining is a must when shopping here, as is minding your purse. Pickpocketing is a regular occurrence, but it should not discourage you from coming here.

7. Sample street food

Vendors

Medina Jdida is also a great area for sampling street food. Vendors set up all over the area, selling figs, fruit and various sandwiches.

No trip to Oran is complete without tasting kerentica, which is a specialty of the city. Kerentica is a cake made from chickpea flower and eggs.

8. Learn about the city

The Ahmed Zabana National Museum

The Ahmed Zabana National Museum was named after Algerian national hero Ahmed Zabana. The museum is housed in a lovely building on Boulevard Zabana.

There are two-levels at the museum, with the first showing the story of Algeria’s struggle for independence. The second level holds archaeological discoveries, ancient artworks and sculptures.

9. Head to the beach

Ain el-Turck

Around 15 kilometres outside of Oran is the seaside resort area of Ain el-Turck. The area itself was named after the beach, which is a major draw for tourists.

Ain el-Turck means ‘Fountain of the Turks’, though in the past this coastal town was called El Eurfa. It was then the home of a plethora of nomadic people who sold their goods at the city’s port.

Today, the strip is lined with accommodations, cafés and restaurants that cater to tourists. It also has a few great attractions, like Saint Roch, Bouisseville and Trouville.

10. Go bird watching

The Sebkha of Oran

The Sebkha of Oran is a saltwater lake that sits northwest of Oran. The lake is listed as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area by Birdlife International.

Bird watchers should not miss out the opportunity to visit the lake. Migratory birds that call the lake home include the flamingo and shelduck.

The lake is also a Ramsar site, being surrounded by eucalyptus, aleppo pine and cork oak forests.

11. Breathe in the fresh air

Foret de Msila

The 1,560 hectare Foret de Msila is just west of Oran on the hills of Boutlélis. It is a lovely forest that is known for its recreational activities.

Cyclists, joggers and walkers will truly enjoy the pathways throughout the forest, where they can breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The majority of the forest is cork oak and aleppo pine trees.

Foret de Msila is a protected forest that does its best to provide Oran with an eco-friendly tourist site.

12. Watch the boats

Oran Port

Oran’s main port is one of the most important in the country. It is a great place for boat lovers to watch freighters, cruise ships and private shops coming in and out of the country.

Ferries arrive regularly from Sète, Alicante, Marseilles and Almería. Some of these are passenger and car ferries, so you can easily get on one of these boats and head on a Mediterranean adventure.

13. Party until the late hours of the night

La Corniche

Oran has a thriving nightlife scene that is sure to please any night owl. In fact, it is the centre of Algeria’s nightlife.

La Corniche, which runs along the seafront, is Oran’s main partying strip. You will find plenty of bars, lounges and nightclubs along this stretch that cater to all types of clientele.

The poshest nightclubs and lounges are located within the luxury hotels, like the Sheraton Hotel, but you don’t have to be a hotel guest to enjoy them.

14. Get pampered in a spa

Four Points by Sheraton Oran

Oran is not known as a spa city, although it does have some great spas that will pamper you. Spend an afternoon getting a massage, soaking in a Jacuzzi or releasing toxins in a steam room.

Some of the best spas in the city are in the top-end hotels, like the Royal Hotel Oran – MGallery Collection and the Four Points by Sheraton Oran. There are also a few independent spas in the city that offer a variety of spa services.

15. Enjoy beautiful scenery

Madagh

Madagh 1 and Madagh 2 are two beaches in a cove just west of the city centre. They are known for their exceptional scenery and make for a great day trip.

The two beaches are separated by a stream and boast a backdrop of a lush green forest and mountains. It is a fantastic place to take some stunning holiday photos.

During the summer months, the beaches can get quite busy, especially on the weekends, as locals also enjoy coming here to escape the city.

What to see in Oran? Itinerary + map of Oran 39

No wonder why Oran is one of the most touristic spots in Algeria. If you just look at the history, you will be impressed how many nations left the mark here. Starting from Roman Empire, after Spaniards, Ottomans and at last French. Oran is very close to Morocco, and you will clearly discover influence from west neighbours in common architecture and decorative ornaments. Oran was part of the Kingdom of Tlemcen established after the demise of the Moroccan Almohad Caliphate in 1236, and later fell under   Ottoman  rule in 1554. You can still see remains of the kingdom in Tlemcen – the former capital.

What to see in Oran?

After 2 days itinerary in Algiers, I invite you for a walk around Oran, as I prepared full day itinerary and map of the most important touristic attractions you should see. The old city of Oran, unlike Kasbah of Algiers, has few parts as invaders were extending the city walls. We are going to start the tour from the newest, and continue towards the oldest.

Oran itinerary can be devided into two chapters: first is the city center and the old town which are walkable, just next to each others. Second part is the fort Santa Cruz on the top of the hill, where you will have to get by some transportation, which I am going to describe later. My Oran itinerary can be done in one day, but I would recommend 2 days to take it easy and enjoy the city.

The map of Oran – touristic attractions in Oran

Place du 1er Novembre – Oran’s city center

Wondering what to see in Oran you should get yourself to the city center first. Oran city centre is a square called Place du 1er Novembre   (1),  also known as Place d’Arms,  that has a fountain and monument worth checking out as well as beautiful theatre  (2).  Theatre is only open for the events or movie playing, when you can sneak in to see the Baroque interior.

On the square there is also the town hall called Dar el-Bahia (3) . which has statues of lions, as a symbol of Oran. The legend says that lions lived here until 900 AD, when two last mountain lions were hunted.   The buildings on the square, as well as in this part of the city, have French influence.

Great Synagogue of Oran

Construction started in 1880 under the initiative of Simon Kanoui. The great synagogue of Oran was inaugurated in 1918. It is situated on Boulevard Maata Mohamed El Habib formerly known as Boulevard Joffre. It was one of the biggest and most magnificent synagogues in North Africa. After Algeria’s independence the synagogue was transformed into a mosque in 1975 (4) .

Cathédrale de Sacré Coeur

Marche de la Bastille

Oran street market.

Bey’s Palace & New Castle

Palace of the bey girl walking around beautiful door old paintings Oran, Algeria.

The walls were built in the 1340s by Merinid Sultan Abou Hassan. Later Spaniards modified the building, same with Ottomans in the 1700s and the French in the 19th century. You can still see their former prison and stable for horses.

Another part of the complex is Chateau Neuf  (New Castle)  (8) , which is in fact the 14th-century fort of Merinid Sultan Abou Hassan. Built during the XVI century, while the country was still under the influence of the Spanish crown, creating one of the most well-known architectural monuments in Oran.

Pasha Mosque

The Pasha’s Mosque (9) was built in 1797 by Sidi Hassan Pacha as a memory of the expulsion of the Spanish. The minaret is one of the most beautiful of Algeria. It is octagonal in shape, decorated with relief lines imitating the joint stone and surrounded, on each of its three floors, enamelled areas and squared as mosaics.

Just next to the Pasha Mosque when going down the street you will see a little house with a memory board (10) . This little house belonged to Hassan, tobacco merchant, which later became a Bey and moved just next door – to the palace. This romantic story of male Cindirella, which was just an ordinary tobacco merchant and got married with the daughter of the Bey. Since she was the one succeding her father, Hassan became a Bey himself.

The Promenade of Ibn Badis

Walk along the promenade (11) and enjoy the view at the port and the most obvious landmark – the fort of Santa Cruz on the hill. The promenade is a long sidewalk where you can get some icecream and listen to the music coming out of the passing cars. The music is particular, it’s Algerian folk style back from 20′ called rai . Oran is a homecity for rai music, well knows all around the country.

Sidi El Houari

Oran architecture. Old palace.

Let’s enter the old city through Canastel Gate (12) near Kleber Square.  Walking up the street Rue Freha Benyoucef you will reach entrance to the Turkish Baths – Hamam (13) . This old bath created during Ottoman Empire rule, still have few impressive buildings dated by 1708. Bey Bouchlaghem built them to use as hamam, later French used it as a laundry. You can still see huge laundry machines in the lower part.

Walking a bit up the street will take you to the Church of St. Louis   (14) which is just next to the hospital Baudens. Church is abandonned but you can gaze through the holes in the door to see the destroyed interior. St. Louis Church was constructed by French, which wanted to make their own changes in the old part as well as expended the city of Oran.

Walking down the stairs will take you to the Square de la Perle (15).  You will see the Boutin Tunel and mosque which has very special minaret. Square based minaret with bricks arcatures in a different way from each side. This construction you can see only in Oran and the mosque of Tlemcen. Apart from Algeria this style recalls mosque in Andalusia (Spain) as all of them were built in the same period.

Old quarter of Oran, Sidi El Houari has its name from the patron saint of the city. Sidi El Houari was Algerian imam and highly respected scholar. His mausoleum (16) is on the way to the Spanish Gate (17) . Spanish Gate is the most well preserved remain of Spanish architecture in Oran. Porte d’Espagnole (Spanish Door) you can reach from the street: Rue des Frères Dahli.

Castello Viejo – the old caste

Castello Viejo (old castle in spanish) is the oldest part of Oran. It’s one of the forts built by Spaniards. Unfortunately, right now it’s a ruin, but still worth discovering. You can enter it from the red gate (18) . You will see ruins of the castle, enter the tunnels, which are still in a very good condition as were used by French as a storage. During the French colony castle was used as a prison. You can still see some drawings on the wall made by African prisoners. When Algeria got independent, nobody took care of the old castle anymore, homeless people started to live in. Nowadays, the ruins are completely empty. You will see nobody.

Fort Santa Cruz

Last and at the same time most popular tourist destination in Oran and one of the most known in Algeria is the fort Santa Cruz. The map of Oran I presented does not depict this part, but you won’t have problem to find it as it’s the icon of the city. The fort overlooks the city and offers breathtaking views.

Fort built in the 16th century by the Spaniards, is located in a strategic location on the massive ridge of Aïdour above the Gulf of Oran. In 1831, the French took over Oran and the fort.

A small chapel, known as the Chapel of Santa Cruz, stands close to the fort. Amazing is not only the view but also the story. I assume it’s one of the most important chapels in Algeria, if not the most. If you are interested to read more about the story, here comes the info from aunt Wiki :

“This chapel has been refurbished with a tower, which has a huge statue of the Virgin Mary, in a procession, followed by the people of the city, to the Oran Hill, when a cholera epidemic affected the people of Oran, in 1847. They sought blessings from the Virgin Mary to protect the city from the epidemic. The entire population implored the Blessed Virgin to bless the place with rain.

Safety in Oran

Oran is relatively safe, which means you don’t have to worry about walking and visiting around. However, as in countless cities in the world, it’s better to don’t walk alone at night, avoid dark and spooky places and always have a knife open (joking). Read more about safety in Algeria .

In my opinion Oran has much more to offer for tourists than Algiers . Such a shame old city with such a huge potential and such a rich history is just becoming a ruin… What are your thoughts?

Great itinerary! If you just stop for the day, what would you recommend? What should I focus on?

As I wrote in the article, all can be done in one day 😉

This looks great, I know very little about Algeria but it’s now on my bucket list.

Glad to hear that!

Oran does sound worthy of a visit while in Algiers. I found your map and suggestions of how to get Avery helpful. I find that literal centers really encourage art and openness- so that was refreshing.

Oran looks like a beautiful place to explore. The lovely monuments are something that I would really like to explore. Thanks for sharing this.

Such an amazing place and I honestly didnt even know about it. The palace, the sacre-coer everything looks stunning. A great plae for architecture lovers it seems

I really enjoyed reading about Oran, especially as I’ve never been to Algeria before. It’s good to know it’s safe for women there, and that they have their own Uber! Love the look of the cathedral too!

I’ve not read much about Algeria’s Oran, but really appreciated reading your post to learn more. The coastline really looks so striking, and I’m drawn to the idea of a liberal and open culture and society. For me, touring the historical architecture (especially in the old city) is great, but it’s the food markets and cafes and restaurants that really appeal.

Thanks dear :*

I love your photos and website design. What are you shooting with, what if your camera? For me, travel photos are 90% of the post and yours really move you to the place.

Bardzo mi miło. Dziękuję za odwiedziny i życzę spontanicznych podróży, jak jest zdrowie to nie ma się nad czym zastanawiać, żeby potem nie żałować 😉

I have loved following your Algeria posts on Facebook and loved reading this! I have never been to Algeria, but from the way you describe it and from your photos, Oran reminds me of a mix between Morocco and Paris. It is interesting that is has so many Parisian vibes even though it is located in Algeria. I’d love to visit and see it for myself one day.

True, it’s called Paris of Algeria for it’s open minded vibe and nightlife, but believe me it’s just the most liberal place in Algeria, remember that, I mean it is very very far from the Paris vibe.

What an amazing beauty and glad you got to explore Oman. Thanks for sharing your detailed itinerary. I want to visit as well.

Interesting information. I’m going to Algeria on January 30 for 10 days. How many days should I stay in Oran and Constantine? Is it best to take train from Algiers, or fly?

I would recommend train, it’s more eco-friendly and lets you see the lanscape on the way. For me two days per city were fine, but depends how much you like to roam around. Oran was definitely my favorite and I would recommend staying there longer if you have time.

Oran ( Arabic : وَهران, Wahran ) is the second largest city in Algeria and the capital of Oran province, with more than 1,500,000 people.

Understand [ edit ]

Oran's beautiful sea shore, constructed under French rule, was inspired by Nice's seafront. It consists of a long boulevard lined with cafés, restaurants, and ice cream shops. The boulevard also offers a splendid view of the sea, the harbour, Santa Cruz and the cliffs ("les Falaises"). It was renamed "Boulevard de l'ALN" by the government after the independence but it is still called Front de Mer by the locals.

History [ edit ]

oran tourism

Present-day Oran was founded in 903 by the Azdaja and Ajissa Berbers who lived in the area. It was captured by the Castilians under Cardinal Cisneros in 1509, and Spanish sovereignty lasted until 170 when the city was conquered by the Algerians during the Siege of Oran (1707–1708). Spain recaptured the city in 1732. However, its value as a trading post had decreased greatly, so during the reign of King Charles IV the city was recaptured in 1790-1792 by a coalition of Algerian troops against Spain which resulted in victory for the bey of Oran despite the many attempts in 1563. The beylik lasted until 183, when the city fell to the French.

Under French rule during the 19th and 20th centuries, Oran was the capital of a département of the same name. In July 1940, the British navy shelled French warships in the port after they refused a British request to surrender; this action was taken to ensure the fleet would not fall into German hands, as the Nazis had defeated France and occupied Paris. The Vichy government held Oran during World War II until its capture by the Allies in late 1942, during Operation Torch.

Before the Algerian War, 1954–1962, Oran had one of the highest proportions of Europeans of any city in North Africa. In July 1962, after a ceasefire and accords with France, a mob attacked European neighbourhoods and massacred hundreds of Europeans in Oran, This triggered a larger exodus of Europeans to France, which was already underway. Shortly after the end of the war, most of the Europeans and Algerian Jews living in Oran fled to France. In less than three months, Oran lost about half its population.

Oran is a major railway terminus with daily trains from most Algerian cities. Trains from the capital Algiers are plentiful, however, with several services daily. Other cities along the Mediterranean coast and in Northwest Algeria also have daily trains to Oran. Additional routes include an overnight train from Bechar , deep into the Sahara and about halfway from Mauritania. While a railway line continues to Morocco , the border has been closed for decades due to political conflict.

All services are operated by SNTF [dead link] , timetables are published at their website.

Stay safe [ edit ].

Oran is considered a safe city. Just use some common sense: avoid wearing expensive jewellery or looking flashy, do not flash large quantities of cash, and avoid unfamiliar and deserted areas at night. If you walk in crowded streets or use a bus, keep a hand in your pockets. Women should avoid low-cut tops, midriffs, or shorts to avoid harassment (which almost always consists of comments, but nothing physical) although this is less of a problem than in other cities. Don't feel the need to be polite.

8 Unbelievable Oran Algeria Tourist Attractions

Oran Algeria

If you are looking for a place to visit that has a mix of history, culture, and relaxation then Oran, Algeria is the place to visit. Oran Algeria tourist attractions are all of that and more.

They take you back in time, full of culture, and you get a relaxing holiday . You get to time travel as you sightsee. Let’s have a look at all the great things you can get up to in Oran, Algeria.

Table of Contents

Fort Santa Cruz

One of Oran Algeria’s tourist attractions is the Fort Santa Cruz. This is a historical site that you can visit as you walk around the city. The Ottomans and Spaniards built it in the 17th century.

It overlooks the city with an amazing view. You can see the Mediterranean and the Mers El Kebir port. To get there it’s a bit of a hike but it is worth the exercise. You will also get some peace and quiet.

Visit the Once-great Synagogue Turned Mosque

Part of Algeria’s history is the Great Synagogue of Oran. Built in 1880, it has since become the Abdallah Ibn Salam Mosque.

Algeria used to be predominately Jewish. But since independence, the Jews moved to France and now it is predominately Muslim .

The name of the mosque comes from a Jew from the 7th-century who converted to Islam. So in the 1960s, the synagogue became a mosque. If you are into history this Oran, Algeria’s tourist attraction will interest you. It is a great sight to see.

Time Travel in Oran

If travelling through time is something that you have always wanted to do, one of Oran, Algeria’s tourist attractions, is the Sifi el Houari.

This is one of the oldest areas in Oran. It is the first area to be built up. As you walk down the street you are transported back in time. You will see three-quarters of the district.

The oldest section of this area is called Casbah. And there is the church of Saint-Lois. There is an old port by the coast of Aidour. You can just imagine the hustle and bustle of the district and feel its life as you walk along.

The historical buildings will blow your mind away. Be sure to set a whole day for this adventure so you do not rush through it.

There is Always Time to Shop

I would say this is my best Oran, Algeria tourist attraction, The Median Jdida. Who doesn’t like to shop when they are on holiday? You can visit the market neighborhood.

This is an activity that will also need a whole day because the market itself is massive. You can get anything that you can think of at this market. Certainly, a great way to look for souvenirs for your people back home.

Street Food for the Foodie

If you are a foodie and love to try out different cuisines then this is the place for you. While you explore the Median Jdida, you can also sample the street food.

Look for the speciality dish of the city, it is Kerentica. It is a cake that is made from the flowers of chickpeas and mixed with eggs. You can also get fruit, figs, and sandwiches. Because you can not shop on an empty stomach.

There is Dine Dining Too

Another of Oran, Algeria’s tourist attractions is the Le Ciel D’oran Restaurant. When you are tired of the street food and you feel like some fine dining with a view then this is the place. You will get fine food while gazing at the view of the evening the Mediterranean Sea. The atmosphere is relaxing and inviting.

Visit the Ahmed Zabana National Museum

Ahmed Zabana National Museum

If you want to know more about Oran, Algeria, then this is the place to visit. There are two levels with the history of Oran and where it all began.

You will find archaeological discoveries, ancient artworks, and sculptures. This will be a very educational visit and not to be missed on the list of Oran, Algeria’s tourist attractions.

Beach Time

When you now need to unwind and just relax, you can also just visit the beach . There is a seaside resort in an area known as Ain el-Turck.

It was a nomadic city and the people sold their wares at the port. You will find restaurants, cafes, and accommodation. This is a good place to just hang out and enjoy your holiday

Oran Algeria has so much to offer. You will not regret your time here. There is so much to learn and so much to see. Take a chance and try it out.
