Written by Carri Wilbanks and Becca Blond Updated May 3, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Home to more than 50 different countries, the African continent has some of the world's best cities to explore. Vibrant, eclectic, and culturally rich, many African cities are modern affairs set to a beautiful backdrop.

Cape Town Waterfront with Table Mountain in the distance

South Africa 's Cape Town , for instance, is often considered one of the world's most beautiful cities for its mix of natural beauty — there's a 6,000-foot table-shaped mountain in the center and a string of white-sand beaches — and buzzy atmosphere. Visitors can expect stylish hotels, delectable restaurants with global cuisine, and plenty of cultural attractions and adventurous things to do.

Other African cities, like Marrakesh , Morocco , offer the best of old and new. In Marrakesh, you will find an up-and-coming art scene, five-star resorts, and contemporary restaurants set next to ancient bazaars, souks, and markets.

And Africa has cities for all styles of travelers, from fast-paced and sprawling metropolises like Egypt's Cairo , Nigeria's Lagos , and South Africa's Johannesburg to cities like Stone Town on the island of Zanzibar, where the pace of life moves slow.

Selected for their diversity, beauty, and reasons a tourist would want to include them on a vacation, here we present our list of Africa's best cities.

1. Cape Town, South Africa

2. marrakesh, morocco, 3. cairo, egypt, 4. stone town, zanzibar, 5. johannesburg, south africa, 6. kigali, rwanda, 7. essaouira, morocco, 8. windhoek, namibia, 9. durban, south africa, 10. nairobi, kenya, 11. lagos, nigeria, 12. algiers, algeria, 13. accra, ghana, 14. luxor, egypt, 15. dar es salaam, tanzania, 16. fes, morocco, map of cities in africa.

Cape Town, South Africa

Located at the base of Table Mountain and right on the Atlantic Ocean, Cape Town has it all. The city is home to a string of beautiful beaches and a plethora of natural attractions like climbing to the top of Lion's Head to view the sunrise or hiking in Table Mountain National Park. It also features the gorgeous Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden , and there is an opportunity to see wild African penguins just about 30 minutes outside the city center.

Cape Town is also culturally rich and home to a myriad of museums, galleries, and historical attractions, like Robben Island , where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years. When it comes to dining and shopping, Cape Town has excellent restaurants and contemporary shops. Don't miss the lively Victoria and Alfred Waterfront , which is home to both.

There are also hotels for all budgets of travelers and due to a favorable exchange rate for Americans, Canadians, and Europeans, even the luxury hotels here are affordable. If you do want to splurge, The Silo Hotel is one of the nicest in town, with Instagram-worthy bathtubs.

Riding camels at the pyramids of Giza

Right on the banks of the Nile River, Cairo is a chaotic and bustling city that is also the largest in Egypt. It's dubbed the "city that never sleeps" — there is always something going on in this sprawling metropolis, where ancient culture meets modern skyscrapers. Expect to hear a cacophony of horns and the rumble of traffic day and night, but the sounds are invigorating to those who like large cities.

Travelers come to Cairo to explore Egypt's long and storied history. Top Cairo attractions include the Egyptian Museum , which is filled with millennia worth of antiquities and artifacts, including mummified bodies of ancient rulers. The large, public Tahir Square with its central traffic circle is the heart of Cairo and also known as a location for political demonstrations. For panoramic city views, you'll want to visit the 187-meter-high Cairo Tower in the Zamalek district of the Gezira Island suburb.

Also nearby is Giza , where you'll find Egypt's most famous attractions : the iconic pyramids dating back to the 26th-century BCE and the Great Sphinx. Visit on a camel for sunrise or sunset.

Aerial view of Stone Town

Stone Town is no major metropolis; it is an old Swahili coastal trading town, but it is one of the most intriguing destinations in Africa . Located on the beautiful island of Zanzibar off the Tanzanian coast in the Indian Ocean, Stone Town is the heart and soul of the island.

The town dates back more than 200 years and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site . It is filled with winding alleys and old riads, with their intricate carved wooden doorways that serve as guesthouses now. Check out the town's vibrant bazaars, and grab dinner from one of the multiple food vendors cooking up fresh dishes right on the waterfront.

Johannesburg

Johannesburg, or Jo'burg as the locals call it, is South Africa's largest city and one of Africa's most wealthy and modern. Expect skyscrapers, world-class hotels, and a host of restaurants that can rival those in major western cities like New York. In fact a lot of Jo'burg has a feeling similar to NYC — it has a young, vibrant, frenetic, goes-all-night energy about it.

The city center is home to attractions like the not-to-be-missed Apartheid Museum . But the suburbs here are also notable and where most of the hotels and restaurants are located.

Johannesburg is also filled with shopping malls that people still flock to, and you'll find these anchored by more classy hotels and restaurants. The township of Soweto is another cultural must-see to understand South Africa's complicated history.

Downtown Kigali

Rwanda's capital city is known for being one of Africa's cleanest cities. Set in the middle of the country and just a 2.5-hour drive from Volcanoes National Park , where tourists come to trek to see Rwanda's mountain gorillas, it has a great geographical location for exploring this emerging destination.

The city, which sits at just over 5,000 feet above sea level and dates back to the 11th-century, is hilly, with buildings set on ridges and accompanying valleys. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is a top (if somber) Kigali attraction , documenting the horrific 1994 mass killings during Rwanda's civil war.

For traditional handicrafts, from wooden carvings to jewelry and woven baskets head to the numerous vendors making up the Caplaki Craft Village . Kigali also has a lively restaurant and entertainment scene.

Essaouira, Morocco

The Moroccan port city of Essaouira on the country's Atlantic coast is one of its most beautiful. The city, which is also a popular resort town, has some lovely beaches and is known for its excellent kitesurfing, windsurfing, and regular surfing, thanks to strong currents and plenty of wind — it is actually known as the Wind City of Africa.

Head to the old medina to begin sightseeing. It is protected by 18th-century seafront ramparts and is filled with palm-lined avenues and narrow streets where you'll find cafés, art galleries, and small hotels. Also check out the old brass cannons lining this picturesque fishing town's fortified walls.

Windhoek at sunset

Namibia's capital city is one of Africa's easiest to navigate. Safe, contemporary, and clean, it is filled with traditional German houses and pastel-hued buildings. Despite being Namibia's largest city, Windhoek has more of a small-town vibe.

The pedestrian-friendly city is easy to explore on foot. Don't miss its many craft shops, fun and tasty restaurants, and neo-Baroque cathedrals that join skyscrapers to make up the city's skyline.

Surfer in Durban

South Africa's third major city, Durban has a unique multicultural history and is known as the birthplace of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi who was born here on June 7, 1893.

Today, the city on the Indian Ocean coastline is a top South African beach destination (the sea here is quite a bit warmer than in Cape Town), with some good surf breaks. It is also known for its large Indian population and excellent restaurant scene.

Top Durban attractions include a seafront promenade that runs from uShaka Marine World , a large theme park with an aquarium, to the Moses Mabhida Stadium , which was built for the 2010 soccer World Cup. It is also known as the Golden Mile.

The Durban Botanical Gardens is another popular attraction and showcases a larger variety of African plants.

Zebras in Nairobi National Park with the Nairobi skyline in the distance

Kenya's capital city, Nairobi, is a vibrant and unique destination with some of the best infrastructure on the African continent. Expect a mix of contemporary skyscrapers and traditional Kenyan style plus a healthy dose of culture and historical sites.

One of the coolest facets of Nairobi is its accessibility to African wildlife safaris. Located just on the outskirts of the city center is Nairobi National Park , a game reserve famed for breeding endangered black rhinos. It is also home to other animals, from zebras to lions and giraffes. Another Nairobi top attraction is the elephant orphanage run by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust next to the reserve.

For lodging, you'll want to check out Giraffe Manor . It is one of the most unique boutique properties around; guests here can interact with giraffes.

Downtown Lagos

Nigeria's largest city, Lagos is also the country's richest metropolis and its financial epicenter. The city is also where to come if you are hoping to make a name for yourself in Nigeria's thriving film and music industries — many dream of appearing on stage at Freedom Park , which served as a prison during the colonial era and is now a popular concert venue.

Lagos stretches inland from the Gulf of Guinea and across the Lagos Lagoon. Victoria Island is a popular destination for tourists, as it has some of the best beach resorts, lively restaurants, and shops and boutiques in the city.

For a dose of culture head to Lagos Island , where you'll find the National Museum of Lagos , which is filled with cultural artifacts.

Seaside Boulevard in Algiers

European and Arab influences blend together in Algeria's capital city Algiers, which is often referred to as the "Paris of North Africa." The visually beautiful city sits on a bay on the Mediterranean coast and is home to some gorgeous beaches. There are also cosmopolitan restaurants, shops, and tourist hotels.

Made sure to wander the white-washed buildings of the Kasbah. The old town is filled with steep, windy alleyways and palaces left over from the Ottoman empire. The Ketchaoua Mosque is another top place to visit. It dates back to the 17th-century and has two large minarets.

Accra, Ghana

The port city of Accra is Ghana's capital and largest metropolis. Right on the Atlantic coast, it is also home to gold-sand beaches like Labadi Beach and Kokrobite Beach and boasts a tropical climate. A favorite vacation spot for wealthy Nigerians who have weekend houses here, Accra is filled with lively restaurants and large shopping malls.

Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park is a top attraction. The park honors Ghana's first president, who helped the country achieve independence from Great Britain. On the park grounds, you'll find Nkrumah's mausoleum and a museum detailing his life and accomplishments. Also check out the colorful Makola Market for all sorts of goods.

Statue in the temple of Karnak in Luxor

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, the city of Luxor in southern Egypt sits on the east bank of the Nile River. Between the 16th and 11th centuries BCE, it was the site of the ancient city of Thebes, which was the seat of power for the pharaohs during the height of their reign.

Today, the modern city is built around two surviving monuments from these ancient times. Don't miss the Luxor and Karnak Temples . Other top Luxor attractions from the past include the royal tombs of the Valley of the Kings on the Nile's west bank.

Dar es Salaam

Arabic for "Abode of Peace," Dar es Salaam is Tanzania's largest city and industrial hub. It also serves as a major trade port for eastern Africa. Although Dar, as it is often referred to, is not Tanzania's official capital – that designation belongs to Dodoma – it serves as the seat for most of the country's government administration.

Founded in 1862 by the sultan of Zanzibar on what was once the site of the village of Mzizima, Dar es Salaam began to really grow in 1887 when the German East Africa Company established a station here. In 1907, the Central Line railroad was built, connecting it to Kigoma on Lake Tanganyika to the west with a stop in Dodoma.

Between 1891 and 1916, Dar served as the capital of German East Africa, and following independence in 1964, of Tanzania. It served in this capacity for a decade until Dodoma was designated the official national capital in 1974.

Today Dar es Salaam is a bustling city with a rich mix of architecture that reflects its colonial past. You'll see Swahili, British, German, and even Asian styles in this melting-pot city. Home to an international airport, pretty beaches, and easy access to the rest of Tanzania, Dar is also a popular tourist destination and a great place to spend a few days before heading off on safari or to the island of Zanzibar.

Bab Boujiloud gate (The Blue Gate) in Fez, Morocco

Fes is Morocco's spiritual capital and the country's best city for historic sightseeing. The oldest neighborhood, and top tourist attraction , is Fes el Bali, which is thought to be the world's largest intact ancient medina.

Enter through the main gate at Bab Boujiloud. From here you have the best views of the minaret of the Medersa Bou Inania. The famous landmark was built between 1350 and 1357 and sits just inside the gate. It is one of the few religious buildings in Fes that non-Muslims may visit, and as such is one of the city's top tourist attractions.

You can spend hours just wandering the medina's crooked, narrow alleys here that spiral into two districts separated by a river. There is also plenty of shopping to be had in the medina's souks. Fes is known for its handicrafts from metalware to ceramics.

While in Fes, you'll want to book a stay in one of its riad hotels. These are usually found in traditional median mansions, complete with central courtyards, intricately detailed carved doors, and tilework, which have been converted into guesthouses.

Check out Karawan Riad in the Andalous Quarter. It is in a beautifully renovated 17 th -century mansion. It has a gourmet restaurant and a spa on-site.

best city to visit in africa

If you're enamored with the prospect of coming face to face with elephants, giraffes, zebras and wildebeests, then a safari tour through Tanzania's Serengeti National Park is the bucket-list adventure for you. The price will be steep, but a journey here affords an unforgettable African savanna experience. To save some coin, book one of the park's campgrounds instead of staying at a high-end safari lodge or luxury tented camp. Plan on arriving in January or February (calving season) or between June and October (dry season and prime migration time) for the best game-viewing conditions.

best city to visit in africa

Outdoorsy types travel far and wide to admire this breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Site. Straddling the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe in Mosi Oa Tunya National Park, Victoria Falls is roughly twice as deep and wide as Niagara Falls, making it one of the world's most jaw-dropping waterfalls . To see this natural wonder at its prime, plan a visit in April or May when the region's rainy season has concluded. Popular vantage points include the Knife-Edge Bridge, Livingstone Island and Devil's Pool. When you're not enjoying the view from above, go whitewater rafting in the Zambezi River to admire the falls from a different angle.

best city to visit in africa

Most tourists head to Tanzania to go on safari, but you'd be remiss if you didn't save time for the country's other must-see treasures. In addition to its animal-filled plains, Tanzania boasts otherworldly natural wonders, including red-hued Lake Natron, Ngorongoro Conservation Area's expansive crater and Mount Kilimanjaro – the tallest mountain in Africa (and largest free-standing mountain on Earth). For the ultimate adrenaline rush, book a climbing excursion up the continent's famous mountain through a local tour operator.

best city to visit in africa

Mauritius appeals to vacationers in search of a bit of everything. Though its main draws are its powdery sands and luxe beach resorts , this small island nation east of Madagascar also charms visitors with its mix of cultures; friendly locals; lively festivals and tasty teas and rums. After a day of exploring some of the island's nature reserves and soaking up the sun, retreat to one of its premier properties to savor fresh seafood while watching a traditional sega dance performance or the sun set over the Indian Ocean.

best city to visit in africa

Home to cheetahs, elephants, lions, wildebeests, hippos and more, Masai Mara National Reserve is one of Kenya's premier spots to see wildlife. Sign up for a safari to explore this protected area's 373,000-plus acres of rolling grasslands. (Tip: Look for companies with guides certified by the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association.) For an extra dose of adventure, opt for a horseback riding excursion or hot air balloon safari. To increase your chances of spotting the big five (lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffaloes) and other migrating animals, time your visit between July and October during the Great Migration.

best city to visit in africa

Zanzibar offers something for everyone, whether you're in search of beautiful white sand beaches or an unforgettable adventure. After trekking to this Indian Ocean archipelago off the coast of East Africa, you'll instantly feel at ease as you lounge on quiet beaches like Matemwe and Kiwengwa. Next, visit UNESCO World Heritage-listed Stone Town, where you'll find the ruins of a 19th-century palace and a graveyard with ties to Zanzibar's former Arab royals. And no trip would be complete without taking a spice tour in the countryside and exploring Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park. As an added bonus, you'll find this is a surprisingly cheap tropical destination .

best city to visit in africa

A grouping of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, the Seychelles has long attracted those looking for a truly relaxing, off-the-beaten-path getaway. Spend your days lounging on pristine, crowd-free beaches like Anse Lazio and Anse Source D'Argent, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Or, head deep into the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Vallée de Mai nature reserve to gaze at its unique flora and fauna. Keep in mind that lodging here is expensive (especially at the luxury resorts), so it's best to save up and book in advance.

best city to visit in africa

With numerous hiking trails, miles of dramatic scenery and stunning beaches (including one with wild penguins), this South Africa hub caters to both adventurous and laid-back travelers. Getting to Cape Town won't be cheap, but your dollar will go far once you arrive. Make sure you take the aerial cableway up Table Mountain, visit Nelson Mandela's jail cell on Robben Island and explore the world-renowned Constantia Valley wine region. You'll also want to save time to trek through the Cape of Good Hope, which lies 40 miles south of Cape Town on the southern tip of Africa.

best city to visit in africa

Cairo can be overwhelming, as there's so much to see and do everywhere you turn. From Islamic Cairo's bustling Khan El-Khalili bazaar to the ancient Pyramids of Giza to the picturesque Nile River, you'll be immersed in this Egyptian city's history and culture before long. Though winter offers the most pleasant weather of the year (with daytime temperatures in the 60s and 70s), it's also the busiest season, so consider visiting in spring or fall when room rates are lower, temps are bearable and crowds thin out.

best city to visit in africa

Like other historic Moroccan cities, Marrakech buzzes with life: Performers vie for your attention in Jemaa El Fna (an open-air square in the heart of the Medina of Marrakesh) while vendors hawk aromatic spices, homemade textiles, ornate lanterns and more at the bazaars along the alleyways. When you need a break from the hustle and bustle of the city, unwind at a hammam, visit the Jardin Majorelle or head to a rooftop bar and relax before retiring to your riad. During your visit, keep an ear out to hear the striking tones of the nearby mosques' calls to prayer.

best city to visit in africa

You'll spot plenty of animals – ranging from lions to rhinos to elephants to giraffes – in this massive game preserve in South Africa. Kruger National Park's network of paved roads makes it easier to navigate than Serengeti, and it tends to be cheaper to visit. However, its popularity (especially from May to October, which are the best months for wildlife viewing) means you're more likely to encounter hordes of visitors during game drives. Consider visiting one of the park's private game reserves for a more exclusive experience, and to ensure lodging, flight and tour availability, you'll likely want to finalize your trip at least a year in advance.

best city to visit in africa

The habitat on the island of Madagascar is unlike any other in the world: Most of the landscape is unspoiled, giving visitors a chance to see animals in their natural environment. Travelers should look out for the country's signature animal: the lemur. Madagascar is home to more than 100 species of these creatures, as well as 11,000-plus plant species, including majestic baobab trees. Some of the best places to see wildlife and Madagascar's geological wonders include Isalo National Park and Tsingy de Bemaraha Strict Nature Reserve. Be sure to save some time to island hop to Nosy Be for its world-class beaches.

best city to visit in africa

Despite its small size and landlocked location in southeastern Africa, Malawi draws visitors with its gorgeous lake, diverse wildlife and friendly people. At Lake Malawi, one of the deepest lakes in the world, travelers can enjoy water sports activities like kayaking and sailing, soak up some sun on a white sand beach or dive beneath the lake's surface to look for colorful cichlid fish. The tiny country also features nine national parks and wildlife reserves, making it an excellent less-crowded option for a self-drive or a guided safari. For the best wildlife viewing, arrive during the dry season, which lasts from May to October.

best city to visit in africa

Adventurous travelers who dream of spending their vacation surrounded by nature will love Botswana. A less crowded alternative to nearby safari destinations like South Africa and Tanzania, Botswana has a strong conservation focus and offers ample opportunities to spot rhinos, elephants and more in protected areas like Khama Rhino Sanctuary, Chobe National Park and Moremi Game Reserve, the oldest reserve of the Okavango Delta. Plus, adrenaline junkies can participate in all kinds of heart-pumping activities, including quad biking, mokoro (canoe) safaris and helicopter tours.

best city to visit in africa

Kenya's capital city offers the perfect blend of urban pursuits and natural splendor. With museums highlighting its pre- and post-colonial heritage, bustling street markets and a thriving nightlife scene, Nairobi is a cultural hub. But its proximity to (and preservation of) wildlife is what makes Nairobi one of the world's most unique cities. The city boasts its own national park – Nairobi National Park, whose grassy plains host 100-plus mammal species including black rhinos – as well as wildlife conservation parks such as the Giraffe Centre and Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. What's more, scenery seekers can also visit the urban Karura Forest or hike the surrounding Ngong Hills.

The Top 10 Cities in Africa and the Middle East in 2021

best city to visit in africa

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite cities in Africa and the Middle East .

This year's World's Best Awards survey was open for voting January 11 through May 10, 2021, as destinations around the world were lifting COVID-19 restrictions. Survey rules have always allowed readers to reflect on their travel experiences over a three-year period. We hope that this year's honorees will inspire your own travels as you get back out into the world.

This year's list of the best cities in Africa and the Middle East shows an incredible diversity of urban life. Each honoree demonstrates a different definition of what a city can be: gleaming economic centers, religious pilgrimage sites, modern cultural capitals, even living museums.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated cities on their sights and landmarks, culture, cuisine, friendliness, shopping, and overall value.

Many of the destinations on this list can be found along the ocean, offering not just shopping, dining, and nightlife but also spectacular waterfront views and the cosmopolitan culture found in port cities. Muscat, the historic Arabian Peninsula capital on the Gulf of Oman, comes in at No. 9. Readers praised its "hospitality" and "friendly vibes" — an openness to visitors potentially rooted in its centuries of welcoming traders from Persia, South Asia, East Africa, and beyond. Essaouira, on Morocco's Atlantic coast, comes in at No. 10. Readers enthused that it's "a wonderful, old-world walled city" with "friendly locals, street vendors, and fishmongers," plus a patchwork of internationally influenced architecture unlike anywhere else in the country.

One honoree on the list is known more for its past than for its present: Petra , Jordan, the ancient city that comes in at No. 8. The surrounding area, with small towns built up on the slopes of nearby wadis, is still home to several thousand people. But the cityscapes that draw up to a million visitors each year are no longer inhabited: ornate facades carved into sandstone cliff faces by the Nabateans in the third century B.C. "If you have the chance to visit Petra in your life — go," wrote one reader. "It's truly one of the wonders of the world, a chance to step back in time."

This year's No. 1 is a decidedly more modern place — with world-class hotels and shopping, stunning beaches and hiking, and some of the best food and wine in South Africa . Read on to learn more about the best cities in Africa and the Middle East, as voted by T+L readers.

1. Cape Town

This coastal city has a tendency to make even the most wanderlust-fueled traveler consider settling down. Survey responses provide more than enough evidence for this. "One of the most beautiful places on earth," wrote one reader, with another saying "I'd definitely retire here!" A third potential expat had a similar reaction: "When my husband and I arrived, we both immediately thought... should we move? " Known for its temperate climate and prime position between mountains and sea, this city is a draw for travelers seeking a mix of urban exploration and nature experiences — with outdoorsy excursions like a hike up Table Mountain or a tasting tour of the winelands within easy reach before dinner and drinks on the waterfront. There's more than enough in the Western Cape to fill a whole vacation, but T+L readers also agreed it's worth adding on a few days after any Southern African safari to do a bit of exploring in this city.

Top 10 Destinations in Africa for a First-Time Visitor

best city to visit in africa

Philip Lee Harvey/Getty Images

Richard Mullin once famously said that "the only man I envy is the man who has not yet been to Africa, for he has so much to look forward to." First-time visitors to Africa are indeed in an enviable position, with 54 countries to choose from and countless spectacular destinations ranging from game reserves to beaches, mountains, and cities bursting with color and culture. However, the prospect of picking a starting point from which to explore the world's second-largest continent can also seem like a daunting task. Here are 10 of our favorite bucket list destinations, all of which offer an unforgettable experience for first-time Africa visitors.

Marrakesh, Morocco

Pavliha/Getty Images

Those interested in the unique culture and history of North Africa will find plenty of both in the most famous of Morocco’s four Imperial Cities. Marrakesh was founded in 1062 by the Almoravids and in the centuries since has gathered a fabulous collection of mosques, palaces, tombs, and museums. Top historical sights include the Saadian Tombs , where members of the ruling Saadian dynasty are buried; the El Badi and El Bahia palaces; and the medieval Ali Ben Youssef Medersa.

The best way to immerse yourself in the spirit of Marrakesh is to stroll through the original walled city, known as a medina. Here you will find a narrow maze of streets lined with stalls piled high with spices, jeweled slippers, stained glass lamps, and swathes of freshly dyed fabric. Stop in the souks for a cup of mint tea or to haggle over a purchase, or to watch artisans at work using techniques that have remained unchanged for centuries. For the most authentic stay, book a room in a traditional Moroccan riad .

Cape Town, South Africa

©fitopardo/Getty Images

For a cultural break at the other end of the continent, head to Cape Town . Frequently voted as one of the world’s most beautiful cities, it’s flanked by the ocean on two sides and presided over by the iconic silhouette of Table Mountain . There is something for everyone in the Mother City. Art galleries, museums, and concert venues cater to the culture vultures, while the world-class restaurant scene draws inspiration from South Africa’s bountiful produce and the wines of the surrounding Cape Winelands.

Natural beauty abounds, whether you spend your time on the white sand beaches of Camps Bay and Blouberg, or take a scenic drive along the Cape Peninsula. For many visitors, Cape Town’s historical landmarks are the main attraction. Take a ferry out to Robben Island to see the prison where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for 18 years, or discover the Islamic culture of the colorful Bo-Kaap neighborhood. For an insight into the atrocities and aftermath of the apartheid era, consider signing up for a township tour .

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Kelly Cheng Travel Photography/Getty Images

If you’re fascinated by natural phenomena, Victoria Falls is an obvious starting point for your first African adventure. Voted as one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World, the waterfall spans the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia and sees the Zambezi River plunge over a drop of 354 feet into the gorge below. Although it isn’t the world’s highest or widest waterfall, it is the largest, with over 500 million liters of water flowing over the edge every minute during peak flood season.

The curtain of spray can be seen from 30 miles away and is the inspiration for the waterfall’s indigenous name, Mosi-oa-Tunya, or The Smoke That Thunders. If you visit from the Zimbabwean side, walking trails through Victoria Falls National Park guide you to a series of viewpoints which afford magnificent frontal views of the Main Falls. The Zambian section of the falls has fewer viewpoints but does provide the adrenalin-inducing opportunity to swim in the Devil’s Pool on the very edge of the falls.

Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

TripSavvy / Ivey Redding

Africa is a continent of superlatives, and the next one on our list is Mount Kilimanjaro . Located close to the Kenyan border in Tanzania, it is the highest peak in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world with a height of 19,341 feet. It’s also one of the few record-holding mountains that one can climb without specialist equipment or training; instead, anyone with a good level of fitness and the right approach can reasonably hope to summit Kilimanjaro.

The first step is to pick a trusted tour operator ( Thomson Treks is one of our favorite options with a success rate of 98 percent). Next, it’s a good idea to pick a longer route with a more gradual ascent rate, since altitude sickness is the primary reason for failed summit attempts. The journey up the mountain will take you through five different climate zones, ranging from rainforest to alpine desert. At the top, a sight that might surprise first-time visitors to Africa awaits: snow and ice!

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

TripSavvy / Felicia Martinez

Tanzania is home to another iconic African destination: the Serengeti . Located in the far north of the country, it shares unfenced borders with Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve . Together the two parks host one of nature’s most extraordinary events, the annual Great Migration of several million wildebeest, zebra, and other antelope. For the best chance of seeing the herds on the move, head to the Serengeti from December to July, making sure to check which area of the 5,700-square-mile park is currently seeing action.

Even if you don’t catch the migration, the Serengeti is a remarkable safari destination. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of its ecological importance, it boats the highest concentration of plains game in Africa. The abundance of antelope, zebra, and other ungulate species attracts large numbers of predators, making the Serengeti one of the best places on the continent to spot lions and leopards . All of the Big Five can be seen with some luck (rhinos are notoriously difficult to spot).

Okavango Delta, Botswana

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

Another destination famous for its incredible biodiversity, the Okavango Delta is a seasonal flood plain in northern Botswana. It’s fed by the Okavango River, which bursts its banks at the end of the rainy season in April or May and fans out across the Kalahari Desert, bringing life-giving water and nutrients to the otherwise arid landscape. At its annual peak, the Delta covers over 8,500 square miles and is a miraculous spread of lush green plains, forests, and marsh-like waterways.

After flying into your camp, the best way to explore is in a traditional dugout canoe. For an unforgettable insight into life in the African wilderness, opt for a few nights under canvas on one of the Delta’s uninhabited islands. In the darkness, listen out for the calls of the 160 different mammal species that call the Okavango home. Amongst these are the Big Five and one of the world’s greatest populations of endangered African wild dogs. Birders are rewarded with over 530 species, many of them regional specials.

Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Mint Images - Art Wolfe/Getty Images

Located on the border with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Volcanoes National Park spans approximately 60 square miles of the Virunga Mountains. There is one main reason to visit, and that’s for the once-in-a-lifetime chance to see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, there are just over 1,000 mountain gorillas left in the wild. These incredible primates share more than 98 percent of our genetic code and are amongst our closest relatives.

Volcanoes National Park is home to 10 habituated gorilla troops, meaning that they are accustomed enough to humans to allow for amazing close encounters. These encounters are strictly regulated for the gorillas’ safety; you will need to apply well in advance for a permit. To find the gorillas, you will trek on foot through the mist-laden cloud forest, a memorable experience in itself. Make sure to leave enough time to visit Karisoke Research Center, where renowned primatologist Dian Fossey conducted her life’s work.

River Nile, Egypt

WitR/Getty Images

The Nile is the longest river in Africa and, according to most authorities, the longest in the world. It runs through 11 countries on its northwards journey to the Mediterranean Sea, but by far, the most famous destination for Nile river cruises is Egypt. This is because an Egyptian river cruise allows you to see many of the country’s most iconic ancient sights along the way. Typically boats ply the stretch of river between Luxor and Aswan, just as traditional feluccas have done for millennia.

Top stops include the ancient monuments of Luxor and Karnak, the Valley of the Kings (where the famous tomb of the boy king Tutankhamun lies), and the temples of Edfu, Philae , and Kom Ombo . The best cruises include a professional Egyptologist guide who will be able to tell you the history of each building, and the mythology that inspired its architecture. There are many different cruise ships to choose from, ranging from the affordable to the luxurious, and from classic steamships to modern liners.

Sossusvlei, Namibia

Michel Gounot/Getty Images

Africa’s best-known desert is undoubtedly the Sahara, but there are some spectacular desert landscapes to be found further south as well. In Namibia , one of the country’s greatest natural treasures is the Sossusvlei dune sea, located in the heart of the Namib Desert. Here, ocher-colored dunes soar skywards in fantastic formations created over millions of years by the force of strong winds coming ashore from the Atlantic Ocean. Some of these dunes are contenders for the title of tallest in the world.

The dunes are a photographer’s dream, especially in the first light of dawn and in the late afternoon. Their razor-sharp spines create perfect geometric patterns and contrast beautifully against the blazing blue sky. For many visitors to Sossusvlei, the highlight is the famous dawn climb of Dune 45. You’ll ascend in the freezing semi-darkness, then reach the summit of the dune in time to watch the sun appear over the horizon and paint the surrounding landscape with hues of fiery red, rose, and gold.

Nosy Be, Madagascar

Pierre-Yves Babelon/Getty Images

Known as the eighth continent on account of its incredible and unique wildlife, Madagascar is probably most famous for its lemurs. However, the island nation is also home to some of Africa’s best beaches , and the number one destination for beach lovers is Nosy Be island. Situated off Madagascar’s northwest coast, the island boasts many stretches of pure white sand to choose from, of which Andilana (on the northwest tip) is probably the most beautiful. The islets around the main island also have more than their fair share of stunning beaches.

When (if) you tire of working on your tan, Nosy Be’s island lifestyle also offers plenty of opportunities for adventure. Snorkeling and scuba diving are both popular pastimes, especially on the pristine reefs off nearby Nosy Tanikely. From September to December every year, it is also possible to swim alongside whale sharks on a snorkeling tour with Les Baleines Rand’eau . On land, you can come face to face with some of Madagascar’s charismatic lemur species in Lokobe National Park.

Nice article and well researched facts. I am a Cameroonian by birth, but current US citizen for 22 years. I have visited several countries in North America, South America, Europe, African, Middle East, and Asia. So lets just say I’m well traveled. I have lots of Nigerian friends in Cameroon, Nigeria as well as here in the US. Personally I have been to Nigeria 3 times in the past eight years, staying 2 to 3 weeks each time I visited. Being to Abuja, Lagos, port harcourt, yenagoa, oweri and calabar. My best friend from high school (she was born in Cameroon, her parents still trading in Cameroon till date) lives in Oweri with her husband and two kids. Facts- Nigeria has billionaires, rich culture, music, and hard working people. BUT, when we’re talking about tourism, Nigeria has no place on the Map. This blog is specific for travel advice for those wishing to vacation in Africa. Anyone who’s attempted traveling understands the check list you go thro when planning international trips- visa requirement, local laws, safety, site seeing, healthcare, local currency are top priority. NO ONE hops in a flight from the US to Africa to enjoy fancy 5 star hotels in Lagos or Abuja ?. People visit Africa for the game, safari, to hang out with the locals, enjoy history, nature and culture. Now those Nigerians rambling about why Nigeria is not on the list, please tell me which one of you can go home and hang out with the locals in you own town or village? Can you eat food prepared by your own cousin? If Nigeria was the best country in Africa like some of you claim why the brain drain, all your talented professionals including yourself are permanently migrating to other countries due to insecurity, witch craft, corruption, greed, high crime rate in Nigeria. chiii!!!, wunna really try ohh??? neh nehnehneh not on the list Wattin nija get to offer on tourism??? No electricity (generator noise and pollution from fuel will give you migraines) No running water ( if you dare to go carry plenty of flagyl and bactrim) wash your hands with bottle water Food is very expensive and poorly preserved Everyone tries to scam you (including the authorities) The people are not welcoming (if you don’t speak their language, they’ll not help you) I can go on and on…….. You Nigerians don’t go to sleep with both eyes closed when you go home to visit your family- FACT * I’ll not recommend my home country Cameroon either. We have electricity, running water, good food, but poor conditions of touristic attractions, poor health care.

Iam not here to say more or less, if you are a Nigerian and you have never lift Nigerian before. Please ? is better you don’t say less of Nigeria. Am a Nigerian and I have travelled to alot of countries. I have been treated like a no body. You don’t get freedom that you get from Nigeria. Even the outsiders who lives in Nigerian have never been treated they way the treat we Nigerian in their own country. Forget what is going on now in Nigeria. Nigeria is a country where you get to explore your life itself. Which doesn’t happen I other countries. You think I’d all about killings and no light??. Is better I stay with high economy and no light Dan being treated like a problem to others. So if you are in Nigeri and have never lift there before don’t belittle your country because you see beautiful nature. Forget about the nature go and try leaving over den you will know. We Nigerian like running away from Nigeria thinking the other countries are better, the face worst than what Nigerian is facing. You won’t know because is not everything the post online. But Nigerian likes to show everything to the world and that is why we make it seem we face more. Explore other countries and see for yourself . Forget about going to another African country. Try going to other countries and see how they will make your life’s a leaving hall just because you are black. Nigeria is a home for all. Let me see who will tell me their country is better than Nigeria. Freedom is number 1. If Nigeria is so bad as you people think or see online, that means no single soul should have been left in it until now. When it comes to food ? we are game, when it comes to life we are there . When it comes to explore we are in. And you people did not add it to the list. Una get mind ooo.

Can’t take this list seriously without Zimbabwe’s inclusion. One of the most beautiful countries in Africa containing one of the world’s natural wonders Victoria Galls. How it doesn’t make this list is beyond me.

Hi Alice, please read our previous comments above about why certain countries did not make the list. Most people are VERY passionate about where they come from. If you can share more detailed information about why Zim should be on the list, it’d go a long way in our next review/update.

' src=

What’s interesting in your article is that you cite political tensions in the country from almost two decades ago. The country has moved on and I think your article must reflect sentiments on the ground. You asked for detailed information, here you go:

Zimbabwe, with attractions in almost every region, has a very developed tourism industry and is the 5th most visited country in Africa (Statista, 2019, link below). Hwange National Park, in the west of the country, has one the highest concentrations of elephants, African painted dogs and lions in the world. The Eastern Highlands, with three mountain groups (Nyanga, Bvumba and Chimanimani) is an ecoregion home to distinct grasslands, woodlands and forests and has the second highest waterfall in Africa. Lake Kariba, to the north, the world’s largest man-made lake has a large concentration of gamefish, particularly tigerfish, fish eagles patrolling its shorelines and big game on the southern Matusadona National Park. Gonarezhou National Park, to the south, has large tracts of pristine wilderness and lives up to its name which means “Place of the Elephants” with plenty more game. The most well known and Instagrammable feature of the park is the Chilijo Cliffs.

In-between and across the country, Zimbabwe boasts five World Heritage Sites: (1) Victoria Falls (of course) which can be seen all year (both wet and dry seasons) from the country’s vantage points. The town’s airport capacity, which tripled in 2016 to handle 1.7m passengers annually, makes it more accessible. The Victoria Falls Marathon has one of the most scenic routes in Africa. (2) Mana Pools National Park, one of the world’s wildest and best preserved ecological areas, is also a designated Ramsar wetland of international importance. The park is home to a remarkable concentration of elephants, buffalo, leopards, cheetahs, lions, hippopotami, African painted dogs and Nile crocodiles. (3) Great Zimbabwe, a medieval city inhabited from the 9th century to the 15th century which gave the country its name. Across an area of 7.3 sq km, these ruins are the second largest in Africa after the pyramids in Egypt. (4) Matobo National Park has over 3,000 registered San rock art sites (one the highest in the world) with Bambata Cave being a major archeological site. People have interacted with these hills for over many millennia, fostering strong local religious beliefs and an almost uninterrupted association between humans and their environment over the past 100,000 years. That association continues to this day with white rhino walking safaris, popular in the park, are very much a spiritual experience. (5) Khami, a ruined city was once the capital of the Kingdom of Butua between the 15th and 17th centuries. The site has beautifully decorated 6m high walls which bear checkerboard designs across their entire length.

I could go on and include the National Art Gallery in Harare which has remarkable Shona sculpture collections. It may come as a surprise but Pablo Picasso was most certainly influenced by Zimbabwe’s Shona stone sculptures (the gallery’s first director was a close friend of his). However, I’ll stop here and encourage you to examine Picasso’s artwork to notice the striking similarities with Shona art. Thanks.

Hi Matthew, thanks for taking the time to share concrete reasons on why Zimbabwe should be on the list of the best countries to visit in Africa. This will definitely go a long way in our review/update.

I love my country Nigeria but the problem we have is our leaders

Thanks for chiming in, Don!

' src=

Leaders are problem of every country

Fez is not a small city!! It’s the second most populated city in Morocco, after Casablanca.

Yep, you’re right!

' src=

So my sweet country Cameroon will not even near this list abi??????

You never know. Big changes could happen.???

Proudly South African here and thank you for your beautiful well researched article. I was browsing through for other best African countries to visit I have been to almost all the Southern African ones and this article was really helpful. Great work!

Hi Noxy! We are glad you found this article helpful 🙂

Inspire of Nigerias flaw, I want yall who thought it isn’t a safe place to give me Instances of any of your family members shouting save me on the phone from Nigeria to me, we’re here we live here, there’s the same insecurity here as at other countries, you want to tell me only popes and reverend fathers lives in Kenya? And nobody could ever get hurt there?, Nigeria greatness shouldn’t be suppressed just because most of yall watch too much local news, if you really wanna Diss a country? Go there first, Nigeria is heaven on earth, even God and Satan had their worst times in heaven, that’s exactly what’s going on here, your article shows alot of discrimination and BS!

“Heaven on earth?” I humbly disagree. If you took the time to read the article or the bio section of the writers, you’ll get a better perspective. And please watch your words! FYI: This is an open platform, and curse words will not be tolerated.

Hi, I found this article immensely beautiful and comprehensive. Thanks so much.

I want to urge my fellow Nigerians, that are ridiculing the author’s wise decision to exclude Nigeria from the list to be more honest with themselves.

Even we that live here want to get out. We hate the fear, the cost of living, the insecurity.

How can one be so blinded by sentiments to say Nigeria should be on the list?

I am a Nigerian, and I have lived here all my life. I can tell you categorically, Nigeria is NOT a safe place to visit.

The daily news are horrible. Not to talk about the insane rise in money rituals, kidnapping, bomblast…

Oh common, let’s call a spade a spade.

Nigeria is a GREAT country. No doubt. But our leaders have made it a hell hole for us.

The corruption, wickedness and greed has brought us to where we are today.

I’m currently serving (NYSC) in Kwara state, and I made the decision that I would not travel back home till I’m done, why?

The roads are horrible.

All my bones ached badly, and for a journey that should take 4 hours, it took us 8 good hours. It was that bad, travelling from Ilorin to Patigi.

Since I got here, I have not been able to keep up with my online business that much, because there is NO LIGHT.

How is that okay?

No light, no water.

I suffered terribly the time I got here. I am just getting used to the situation of things and all. But that doesn’t mean things are getting better. They’re getting worse.

The bloodshed is much. The internet fraud is huge. Nigeria currently isn’t the best place to visit in Africa. Except you have the resources to stick to the luxurious places, have a tight security etc, and how is that for fun. It could as well pass for a formal function.

You lose the pleasure and joy when you are so damn security conscious.

I know stories. I don’t just want to say more.

I believe we will be better soon. I believe Nigeria will rise to become one of the most sought for in the world. I do. But till then, keep awake, and try to stays safe.

PS: I’m having thoughts of leaving Nigeria to another African country. Which would you suggest? I’m looking at a place with lots of potential, good living conditions, and economy.

Hi Meshack, thanks for your feedback and personal insight on your life in Nigeria. I hope everything gets better soon.

Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, and Malawi. If you’re open to moving outside of Africa, Canada is a great place for skilled immigrants. CanadaWiz has some helpful information.

Where can Nigeria travel to and live with peace

' src=

There are so many African countries you can move to. I am a Nigerian and I can relate to the recent happenings in the country.

You can stay in Visa free countries like Ghana or Benin Republic. I would recommend Benin because I met some Nigerians there in Dantokpa market (igbos) and Fidjrosse too. However, Benin is francophone but some understand english especially when you live among the Nigerians.

Hi Magdalene, thanks for providing personal suggestions to Osayande! We appreciate when our readers help each other out.

' src=

Good talker. Hope you get a million bucks for defaming and ridiculing your own nation. Corper you say? Have you thought of a reason to make your LCDA very important and do the work? Have you made any reasonable innovation and invention in your undergraduate days? Have you submitted a paper for review in the national newspaper to show how you really care for your country? I’d rather you haven’t. When you do it, teach people to do it too. That’s how we all learn to make the nation a better place

' src=

Bros, you just said rubbish. Absolute nonsense! What are taking about? Who is defacing which country? This country has no image within and outside of it. Everything said in the post you commented on are spot on. Where is the enabling environment for anything in Nigeria. You sound like one of the privileged few who don’t even know what’s up with the majority. This country is beyond redemption, everything is wrong! Everything! And you here talking rubbish. Paper kor paper ni. A country that celebrates mediocrity?? You amaze me.

' src=

I am surprised that D.R.Congo is classified an unsafe country to visit. But I can remind people here that it is not true and that 80% of the country is peaceful and quiet. Only 20% in NE region where there is some rebels groups created by the same people refusing others to come, so that they can continuous to stealing minerals without being noticed.

' src=

Am so impressed by your article. But sadly Liberia isn’t part.

Hello Mackula, I’ve heard great things about Liberia. What’s some note-worthy information about Liberia that you can provide to our readers about why we should list it as one of the best countries to visit in Africa in the next round?

' src=

By analysis Liberia should be among the 15 best African countries to visit, despite the past security problems we had, Liberia is now a peaceful nation and a beautiful nation to visit. Let me take you to Robertsport where you have the lake Piso sharing a sandy beach with the Atlantic ocean, and not forgotten one of the nation most beautiful lake in Bomi, the blue lake and many other. I will appreciate you going back to your listing.

Loved to read the different comments about African Countries… Broadens my horizons too although I am a born and bred African myself… Proudly Namibian! I felt a lack of exposure to my beautiful and deffinitely unique country in the recomondations you made. So I would like to extend a friendly welcome to all who are interested in visiting the vast modern ànd ancient country of Namibia in future. With a small population of just over 2 million come experience space and freedom wherever you travel in this country of total contrasts and history. The Namib desert, oldest in the world, nestled right against the rich sealife of the Atlantic Ocean… excellent, well experienced safari companies to choose from to bring you to all the big 5 wildlife, rivers, tropical scenery, rock formations, historical places and modern fun and enjoyment that you crave for when on holiday. Our roads and guesthouses/farms are of the best on the continent and friendliness & politeness are our top charateristics! Allmost all who visits Namibia wants to come back and stay for good. Make a good and informed choice my fellow travellers! Ciao. Petro

Hello Pedro, wow! You’ve sold me on Namibia. Fantastic work! I agree that Namibia is a great place to experience several African cultures. According to the 2021 Global Peace Index by the Vision of Humanity organization, the best part is ranked # 10 among the safest African countries, so that’s an added benefit.

' src=

Rwanda also should be in this list

Hello Mwezi, I love Rwanda and completely agree it should be on the list. We’ve taken note of that and will compare it to the other countries on the list when we update the post.

' src=

I can see African are trying as a continent. But I don’t know why Nigeria is not among the lists…

Hello Prince, please see our previous comments. Cheers, Lydia!

' src=

Pls try adding Nigeria, she’s one of the most colorful and beautiful places in west Africa

Hi, Mide thanks for the request to add Nigeria to this list of the best countries to visit in Africa. It’s no doubt that Nigeria is a colorful and beautiful country in Africa. Per requests, we looked into potentially adding Nigeria to this list.

However, hearing about things like kidnapping, ransom, and armed robbery on the Lagos-Kaduna train – this makes you raise an eyebrow about safety as a solo tourist. Please see our previous comments about why Nigeria did not make the list.

' src=

Great little List. With so many countries it is certainly difficult to narrow it down. I think you have done a tremendous job.

Rightfully SA is often seen as the gateway to Africa and is at the top of the list. I personally think Namibia is very beautiful and a unique country in this big world and for travellers who are coming to SA it is easy to combine these 2 countries if you are spending a few weeks in Southern Africa.

Be sure to take a trip up to Vic Falls too.

' src=

What do u think that ivory coast is not also part of those top vacation country plse u need to revisits this listing.

Hello Rodrigue, I appreciate your feedback and we’ll access it to the other countries when we update the post.

' src=

oh i really love going to africa well i haven’t been to other countrie like kenya or ethiopia but i do love ghana and i had alot of fun in nigeria(benin kingdom..lagos..abuja etc.)so i was wondering why isn’t nigeria included?…my point is nigeria lacks electricity and has bad roads but is still one of the best country in africa and their culture is delightful i mean i can’t stop thinking you have something against that country…i mean why else would you not include africa number one country???

Hello Alex, I agree with you that Nigeria has a rich culture. However, I would say several other countries have a great culture like Nigeria and have the necessary amenities to have a comfortable vacation, hence why Nigeria isn’t on the list. I hope that helps!

' src=

Nigeria is full of corruption

' src=

eish the way people hate zimbabwe hahah, its in the top 10 most visited countries every year with 2million plus visitors and you dont include it in your list ,despite politics more people still visit zimbabwe annually and the only country in southern africa which receives more visitors than zimbabwe is south Africa ,anywhere its your opinion …..

Which African countries is best to go for vacation with the family of 6, age 3, 4 and 7 and two adults, and how many days is good to stay considering the fact that one will not have any help but we want to enjoy the best of other African country,

Hello Tony, that’s super exciting that you’re looking to visit Africa with your family! For a family-friendly location, I would say Botswana, Ghana, and Morocco are good locations to consider.

' src=

Hi. Somalia is africa specially hon of africa. Somalia has many things such as two Rivers, largest sea in Africa. Form and land Animals. In time of security lang tine was bad but now is more Stable 100%.

Hello Ahmed, we appreciate your comment. I’m certain Somalia’s security is getting better, however, it’s still ranked at the bottom of the list and is currently at 158 out of 163 countries in the world for global peace so it still has a long way to go.

' src=

Nigeria should be among the top three to visit in Africa And you fail to mention it among the top 15

Nigerians are warm welcome people and Nigeria has a great destinations to explore #VisitNigeria

Hi Omotosho, thanks for taking the time to leave a comment about Nigeria not making this list of the 15 best countries to visit in Africa. We do agree that Nigeria is a beautiful country with welcoming people and an amazing destination to explore. But when you hear about kidnapping and Boko-haram and the current state of security, transportation conditions… it’s obvious that traveling solo as a tourist might not be the smartest idea (outside of Lagos and Abuja). Please see our previous comments about why Nigeria did not make the list.

' src=

You guys are unbelievable , you couldn’t even add Nigeria in the top 5

' src=

Nigeria????? Nigerians are not warm welcoming people. I am a Veteran of the US Army. I live in America; needless to say every Nigerian I have met was rude, arrogant, and let’s not leave out very shunning. The only reason why passage is allowed to Modern day Africans is because of our enslaved ancestors, we as Americans come from our enslaved ancestors called “AFRICANS.” Nigerians please stop looking down on Black America; when you do that you show ignorance. To look down on Black Americans is to look down on yourself, and please stop judging Black Americans we have it hard enough. Shalom.

Hello Levarn,

I’m so sorry to hear about your experience. Hopefully, I can make it up to you! 🙂 Regardless of the country or nation, there are good people everywhere and not-so-good ones. I bet you’ve had a negative experience with specific Nigerians you’ve encountered. So here’s my challenge to you! Please send us an email with the number of Nigerians you had in your not-so-good list, and I’ll connect you with twice as many Nigerians what will make you feel like family. How about that? Are you up for the challenge?

' src=

Why is Togo not part of the list

Hi, Takpeidin please read the details about each country that made the list as one of the best countries to visit in Africa and give us a few compelling reasons why Togo should be on the list.

I’ve been reading your sh***thing replies to people who asked why Nigeria isn’t on that list, and I feel like purging rn, you’re undeniably biased and you have a thing against a country you read about it flaws online and never been there, Google is your friend, get a book, watch documentaries and broaden your knowledge about Nigeria and forget the boko haram BS, that in northern Nigeria and its an insurgency it doesn’t even say you must find your way into it, Nigeria is the best place anyone can visit cos I don’t even know where to start, I’m from the South West and I can’t imagine how surprised you are that you’re being brain washed when you come here, enjoy your boring Botswana and Ghana in peace then

I swear. It seems they forgot why is called the Giants of Africa. Abi the thought it was just a given name. You people should better come to your right senses about Nigeria oooo.

' src=

It will be nice if Nigeria would be include in the list’, but with those stupid leaders we have, that can’t happen

It’s too bad! Nigeria and Congo DR have soooooo much potential!

It will be nice if Nigeria would be included,’ but with those stupid leaders we have, that can’t happen

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Amos. If a few traveling and safety concerns could be addressed, Nigeria would undoubtedly be a hot spot for travelers and tourists.

' src=

Could you please recommend Uganda’s Unique mountain gorillas, note that Uganda is a home of half of the world’s apes (mountain gorillas). And the source of the Nile!

Thanks for the suggestion, Alex! We really appreciate your feedback.

' src=

But Victoria falls is more beautiful on the Zimbabwean side not Zambia

Ha, I completely agree Blessing! Great job rooting for Zimbabwe . It’s definitely an area we need to include when we update this post.

' src=

What about Madagascar??

Hello Noela, Madagascar is one of those countries we tend to forget since it’s not on the mainland. However, I completely agree with you! It will be a great addition to the list! We’ll be sure to do that when we update the post.

Love, Lydia

' src=

What about Benin? And for food what would rank as the countries you visited with best food in Africa?

' src=

You forget to mention the smiling coast of Africa the Gambia. Beautiful country, friendly people nice beaches Gambia is one of the safest and peaceful country in Africa

Hello Gagum,

I have heard many great things about The Gambia – the food, the beaches, and the people, plus it’s affordable. I’ve added it to our list when we visit West Africa. We’ll definitely include it in our post once we update it.

' src=

You state that Namibia is a country that “leaves plenty to be desired.” But the statement of leaving plenty (or, alternatively, much) to be desired is used to express that something is lacking; it’s insufficient. It needs work. Did you mean to say it HAS much to be desired? That would make far more sense in relation to your recitation of the variety of offerings the country brings.

Hi Brian, thanks for catching that. I’ve just updated the post. I really appreciate you taking the time to drop a comment.

' src=

Namibia is great the way it is. Do not need a lot of people coming in or thru

Your comment about Namibia; namely, “the sheer size of Namibia leaves plenty to be desired from the untamed wilderness and rich wildlife of this beautiful country,” was surely meant as a compliment but the phrase “leaving plenty (or alternatively, much) to be desired” is really an expression that something is inadequate, insufficient; lacking. It’s a soft insult to express something needs improvement rather than stated that something is flawed, but it is by no means a laudatory statement.

' src=

GREAT information! My husband and I would love to travel to Africa with our two kids (16 yr old & 10 yr old). We want to experience all of it, the culture, the safari, the beach, sightseeing, and shopping. What do you suggest?

Hello KG, thanks for reaching out! If this is your first time visiting Africa, then I’ll recommend either South Africa, Kenya, or Zanzibar for two reasons:

  • They either don’t require a visa or getting one is super easy -> use iVisa.com to get your visa.
  • Planning your trip from the US is easy. You can plan the major parts of your trip before you get there. Use Booking.com for your hotel and TripAdvisor for your activities.

Tips: I recommend having only your must-have activities planned out, so you have some flexibility when you get there.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

' src=

I am located in California US … and I am planing a family trip of 6 adult and 4 kids to Africa … never been that far from home and I was doing research on the best place to go … Africa is so big and I want us especially the kids to experience the culture … your article was very help but I’m still unsure how to plan a great and safe trip … can you tell me about Ghana … I want a safari but I also want the interact with the locals and shopping.

Hello AJ, thanks for reaching out! I’m glad you find out post helpful. I have not personally visited Ghana but my sister has so am sure I can get the information you need from her and share it with you. Ghana is great for experiencing the real African culture. However, it doesn’t have the best safari experience. East and Southern Africa have the best safari on the continent with Botswana, Kenya, South Africa, and Zimbabwe taking the lead in those regions.

So, it really depends on what you want to do. If going on a safari is on your must-do list and you want some culture, I would recommend Kenya or Botswana . You’ll be able to get both for the price of one. If you have any other questions, please feel free to respond to the comments here. We can also take the conversation via email or over the phone. Just say the word! 🙂

Try Gambia, peaceful and relaxing. Friendly people..check out on YouTube the BAG FAMILY in the Gambia or blaxit

The Gambia is great! However, keeps in mind it’s a small country, so if you plan to spend more than a week, you may run out of activities to do with the kids.

' src=

Proudly Kenyan!… we love visitors and are very hospitable. Najivunia!

Hello Najivunia, I couldn’t agree more! We got back from our East African trip a few days ago and enjoyed our stay in Kenya . You are very hospital people, and I loved the food and activities. I gained 20 lbs in 6 weeks!!! Now, I have to hit the gym, but it was well worth it.

P.S. – You’ll have to watch your back because your sister country, Tanzania , is really upping their game. But they have a ways to go. BTW, the view of Mt. Kilimanjaro is still better from Kenya 😉

' src=

great country,i would love visit kenyan in the future.

' src=

Nigeria should surely be on this list?

Hello Dr. Peter, I respectfully disagree. This is the third comment I’ve received about adding Nigeria to the list so I want to list a few reasons why Nigeria didn’t make the cut:

  • Getting a visa to Nigeria is a pain; they want you to come physically to the embassy to get a visa. For anyone living out of state, that’s time and money that get expensive. The last time we visited, we had to use an agency to get our visa and it cost us $350 each. In contrast, we applied for our visa online for Kenya! It was stress-free and we got approval in less than 48 hours and it only cost us only $50 when we applied directly to the Kenyan embassy. For a hassle-free visa experience, iVisa can help you get most visas to Africa . Also, the Nigerian embassy in D.C and New York were not operational for several months; 5 months the last year. I’m not sure what the current status is.
  • A lot of places in Nigeria do not have basic services that American or international travels will expect without paying a fortune for it. For example, lack of steady electricity, bad roads, even the US Uber app doesn’t work (as of the last time we traveled) so we had to have a friend help us order Uber using their own “local” app.
  • Lack of security is huge. I don’t feel safe traveling to Nigeria with all the insecurity. I would advise against traveling to Nigeria especially now with more unemployed youth. It was bad before but now, it’s getting worse.

So, the next time someone else says “Nigeria should be on the list,” please provide 3 reasons why it’s better than the other counties on this list. Thanks!

' src=

You are being sentimental, Uber, Bolt and Opay rides all work in Nigeria so that’s a big lie, in terms of electricity Nigeria doesn’t have constant electricity but it depends on the city you visited that’s if you actually did, Nigeria is one of the countries with the best roads in Africa and one of the most expensive roads we are y’all of roads that each Kilometer costs #6.2 billion naira that’s more than $15 million dollars per kilometer, I bet all those countries you listed above apart from Egypt and South Africa can afford the Lagos Island bridge the longest in west Africa, imagine Lagos as the smallest state in Nigeria has the fourth Largest Economy in Africa if it were to be a Country it would be richer than those countries you mentioned.. Talking of insecurity All the countries in Africa has same problem of insecurity, so why exaggerating it and pointing it to one country, non of the Countries mentioned above has better a Military than Nigeria, Nigeria has the best Land Army in the world, Nigeria is one of the best countries in Africa you don’t need to be a Nigerian for you to all this fact, to see their rich culture and huge development in Nigeria, you had a girlfriend their that broke your heart better express your anger to her rather than generalizing and saying bad things about her country..

Hi James, before I respond to your comment please share valid stats on where you got this information from: 1. “Nigeria is one of the countries with the best roads in Africa” 2. “All the countries in Africa has same problem of insecurity” 3. “Nigeria has the best Land Army in the world” 4. “you had a girlfriend their that broke your heart better express your anger to her”

' src=

Lolzz. Truth is, as a Nigerian ,living in Nigeria ( Abuja ,city center) for that matter, I don’t even feel remotely safe, and I discourage my family and friends from visiting till further notice. We need to be honest.

' src=

Getting a visa in Nigeria depends on so many things and can’t really say much about that for now. For security all countries has this same issues, incredible India has challenges with security but people still visit there. It is important you get a good tour guide and he plan all for you to make it lovely. Nigeria is still the best country you can visit in Africa…

Hmm Makanjuola, you have a point. With a “good tour guide,” I see the possibility of a tourist visiting Nigeria and feeling mildly safe. But this still doesn’t level up the playing field for Nigeria to make the cut. This is definitely a hot debate as most readers believe that their home country/motherland deserves to make the list. But being objective with the information we have, Nigeria is not one of the best countries to visit in Africa as discussed above/previous comments. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

' src=

Well I totally disagree with you on this. Firstly, you said “the Nigerian embassy in DC and New York weren’t functional last year”. Well, we all know how bad the pandemic was for the tourism industry last year. The Nigerian embassy in DC was not functional obviously due to COVID-19. Secondly,There are Places in Nigeria with basic amenities as good as places in the USA. Maybe you haven’t been to the newly built Eko Atlantic in Lagos, Nigeria. There are also places like VI and ikoyi where tourist can stay. I wouldn’t deny that we lack of electricity is a great deal in Nigeria in some parts of Nigeria, but then, there are still places where we have it in abundance. And we also have other electricity facilities to satisfy the needs and convenience of tourists. I bet you won’t go to a place as a tourist and be allowed to stay without electricity. The Transportation app Uber works so well and taxify app which is also an alternative works so well here too and are very much affordable. You also talked about security issues. The truth is;there are security issues everywhere in the world. However, the way they’re been manage differs and the location also matters. And for your information, There are states with no security issues in Nigeria. Example is lagos. Nigerian youths are also known for their hardwork and excellence. in the sense that, we do not need to be employed to be relevant. They venture into small scale and tech businesses that help them survive. If it was as bad as you stated, everyone living here would be dead by now and people from citizens of the US, Europe, etc wouldn’t be coming here to become an expatriate. My point is, Nigeria is also a competent African country for tourists to visit. Here are some beautiful places you can visit in Nigeria as a tourist??

Agbokim Waterfalls Agodi Gardens Andoni Elephant Sanctuary Aso Rock Bar Beach, Lagos Benue River Biu Plateau Bina Footprint Chad Basin Cross River National Park Emotan Statue Erin-Ijesha Waterfalls Ezeagu waterfalls Gashaka Gumti National Park Gurara Waterfalls Ibeno Beach Idanre Hill Ikogosi Warm Springs Isaac Boro Park Kainji Dam Kainji National Park Kamuku National Park Lake Chad Mambilla Plateau Mandara Mountains Millennium Park (Abuja) Mount Patti National Arts Theatre National War Museum, Umuahia National Stadium Abuja New Afrika Shrine Ngwo Pine forest Niger River Oban Hills Obudu Cattle Ranch Obudu Plateau Ogbunike Caves Okomu Forest Reserve Okomu National Park Old Oyo National Park Olumo Rock Oron Museum Osun-Osogbo Port Harcourt Tourist Beach Queen Amina Statue Sir Lugard Empire Hill Sukur Cultural Landscape Tinapa Resort Yankari National Park Zuma Rock

Hi Tosin, thanks for the open dialogue about Nigeria. Although we stand by our decision about Nigeria not making the cut for being one of the best countries to visit in Africa (re: our points above), Nigeria is a country that is rich and diverse with so much to offer. You’ve made a great argument and even took it a step further by sharing unique places tourists should visit in Nigeria. At this point, we’ll leave it up to people to read this post and your comment before deciding if they should/should not travel to Nigeria.

I totally agree with you. Nigeria should not even come close to this list. And yes,I am Nigerian. Anyone that cares about staying alive whike on vacation should please try these African countries listed. Don’t even dream of Nigeria.

I appreciate your honesty! I’m glad another Nigerian can be brutally honest to provide invaluable feedback for our readers. Thank you!

Hello Oge Chidube, I appreciate your blunt statement. However, your comment is quite exaggerated. I am also a Nigerian. I stumbled on this page, in my attempt to take a vacation. I have visited many other pages and i can say that the issue of insecurity is not peculiar to Nigeria alone; It’s a global menace. Please, let honesty be honesty. Meanwhile, I respect the opinion of africawanderlust about why Nigeria did not make “their” list. Let’s leave it up to people to make their findings beyond this page and decide. I wish everyone a safe and pleasant trip.

I really like Kenya and Tanzania, others like Morocco, Egypt, Madagascar, Ethiopia and Cape Verde look super cool too, but yes so many beautiful countries, the great lakes region looks awesome as well, it’s unfortunate that some countries have political and economic issues as I’ve known many great people from countries like Somalia, Eritrea, Sudan, and others, i think Kenya would be my 1st pick to visit

Hello Troy, thanks for your comment! I completely agree with you. We just came back from our East African trip literally 6 days ago, and Kenya was one of the countries we visited. We went hiking, snorkeling, and the usual tourist activities. It was very easy lovely.

Kenya is a great choice but if you plan to work from Kenya while you’re visiting, consider the time difference. We live on the West Coast, and it was brutal for us to work from Kenya (using PST time zone) because we had an extended trip (6 weeks). For that reason, I would recommend people go to Morocco instead if they’ll be working on their trip. The time difference will work in your favor.

Great article guys! I’m glad to see my country, Ethiopia in the list?. I’ve also always wanted to visit other countries in Africa and this article was very helpful.

Thanks, Meski. Glad you found this article helpful.

I made a promise to my 78 year old mother that I would take her to Africa before she or I died. I’m 59 & she’s 78, this will be our first time traveling to the Mother Land from New Orleans Louisiana. Your article provided me with pertinent details about each area of the continent has to offer its tourist. Due to both of our physical mobility issues I am lending more towards Ghana. With the historical slave trade documented evidence I think this would be the best choice for my family.

Hi Cheryl, I’m so glad you found this article helpful. Please keep us updated on your trip to Ghana. We’d love to hear your feedback.

' src=

Hi Lydia, I just saw your article and I love it. Weldone .Please what about Nigeria?

I’m glad you like our content, Conny. Please see my previous comment about Nigeria. Thanks!

' src=

What about Nigeria?????

Hello James, Nigeria is not one of the easiest or safest African countries so I wouldn’t recommend it to most people only if you have a trusted family member that can help you with all the quirks before and after your arrival.

' src=

You do not know anything about Nigeria obviously. Pls I strictly recommend you do a good research thoroughly, before writing any article about any country here. I’m sorry to say, but it’s a shame you’re exceedingly outdated ?

Hello Jethro, I can tell how enthusiastic a lot of folks are about Nigeria. However, here’re the facts! The 2021 Global Peace Index was just released, and Nigeria is ranked 146 out of 163 countries globally. Put differently, it’s ranked the bottom 6th of all countries in the world based on peace. So I know Nigeria has a lot of culture and great food and people, but we can’t underemphasize the safety of the people considering visiting the country. We want our readers to be informed to make an educated decision about the African country that best fits their needs.

' src=

South Africa is on another level believe me!

I couldn’t agree more, Noel!

' src=

Very cool! You guys do a great job with your selections, pictures, and information.

Do you also post on Instagram?

Thanks! James

Hello James,

We’re glad you enjoyed our post. Here’s our Instagram account . We’re still working on posting consistently. Thanks for the friendly reminder. We’ll be sure to do that in March when we’re on our trip to Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and Uganda.

Guys, I just came across your site and article. Absolutely LOVE all that you’ve shared 🙂 We’d like to visit the continent in 2021 and really can’t decide where to go to given what’s going on around the world… You article has given us a lot of excitement though 🙂

Thanks for sharing your thought! Yeah, we love traveling around the world and also experiencing other countries’ cultures. However, Africa is in its own class since there are so many things to do, so there’s always something for everyone.

If you’ll enjoy a safari, any of the Southern African countries is the way to go. I would go with Botswana since it’s safe and is ranked one of Africa’s best safari places.

If you like the beach, then Eastern Africa is where you should look. Tanzania and Kenya have great beaches; however, my first choice will be Zanzibar in Tanzania. It will take tour breath away.

If you enjoy culture, then you’re looking at West Africa. There’s a lot to learn about colonization and the slave trade, and a more exciting part of history. Ghana and the Gambia are great choices, but Ghana is the way to go!

If you like the outdoors, then you’ll enjoy North Africa. Morocco is a good first place to visit. You can do dunes bugging, which is a lot of fun, and walk around the street markets.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions.

' src=

Please note that the Picture under Egypt is for the Pyramids of Giza, not the Karnak Temple. Please fix it.

Great article though.

OMG! Thanks for catching this. Fixed now 🙂

' src=

what about algeria?

Hello Mohamed,

We haven’t personally been to Algeria yet, however, due to the current usability of the region, we wouldn’t be adding it to our list of best African countries to visit at this time. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

' src=

This is a great article. I love your website. I have a question. Which country would you recommend for someone who is visiting Africa for the first time? We are not keen on North Africa nor Wildlife. Senegal? Ethiopia? Someplace which is more cultural and where we can get the real African motherland vibe? Thank you 🙂

Hello Gopi,

If you’re visiting Africa for the first time, I recommend you visit a place that’s safe, has good transportation, and reliable internet. Most African countries are full of culture so you can’t go wrong there. If it was my first time and I don’t know a local in that country, I’ll go to Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, or Cape Town. Hope this helps! Please us know if you have any other questions.

We’re about to plan a trip to Eastern Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and Uganda) in early March so we’ll have some more updated information.

' src=

Hi what of Nigeria

Hello Enny, please see my previous comments about Nigeria. Thanks!

Don’t mind dose Nigerians claiming Rights 2 b listed dere, I luv d fact is not dere so dat Naija should sit up , we are only were known 4 just population nd business (be it music, Nollywood, trading e.t.c) nd notin more . Hello Am justice

Hello Justice, it’s nice to meet you! How can we be of help or assistance?

Tunisia should be in this list. Even in Top 5. I was there in January 2020. Have beautiful places like Tunis, carthage, el-kef, tabatka, ain dirham, sousse, hammamat. And the food is just so tasty. Not to mention the wonderful people who are so friendly and helpful.

Hello Jasem,

I completely agree with you. Tunisia is beautiful and it has very friendly people like most places in Africa since that’s the culture. We’ll be sure to include it as one of the additional places when we expand to the top 20 best African countries to visit. Keep the feedback coming.

' src=

Please what is your cost then

Hello Okafor,

Can you please expand on your question for clarity? I want to make sure I’m providing you with the most accurate information.

' src=

I absolutely loved Zimbabwe, and from there you can take a tour to Botswana for safaris near the border, best time of my life, the border also takes you to Zambia, the problem is Zimbabwe requires visas for most countries and it’s difficult to obtain, Also enjoyed Southafrica, but as you say it’s more a western city. Democratic Republic of Congo was plagued by war but original.

Africa is the best destination trip you can take, congrats on the very accurate comments you make.

Thanks for the comment, Ciervo! I’m glad you enjoyed your trip to Zimbabwe and you had a trip of a lifetime! That’s a great tip about visiting Botswana when you’re in Zimbabwe. We did the same thing from South Africa and the Botswana visa on arrival was easy, the country is clean, and they are a zero-free corruption country. We enjoyed ourselves when we visited so I highly recommend it. What’s your next African vacation destination?

Someone listed alot of places that could be tourist centers in Nigeria. Like seriously??? Aso rock?? What exactly can one do in Aso rock??? And most of the places listed are not even kept in good shape. Nigeria has lots of potential but that’s not enough to put it on this list. Our roads are in horrible states, i don’t even want to mention the daily kidnapping and killings. Oh please! Thanks to the publisher for excluding Nigeria from the list. Maybe sometime in the future, when the country becomes what it’s supposed to be.

When to Visit Africa

Africa is a vast and diverse continent with many countries, landscapes, and climates, making it an attractive destination for travelers year-round. However, the best time to visit Africa largely depends on the region you plan to explore and the experiences you seek. Read on to learn how to choose the best time to visit Africa and which cities are best for you in this respect depending on your schedule.

Here are some considerations to help you decide when to visit Africa:

1. Weather and Climate

Africa’s climate can be broadly categorized into three regions – North, South, and Equatorial Africa. Each region experiences different weather patterns, so the best time to visit varies.

    – North Africa

Countries like Morocco, Egypt, and Tunisia have a Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and mild winters. The best seasons to visit are spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) when the weather is pleasant and not too hot.

    – South Africa

The country experiences opposite seasons to North America and Europe. Summer runs from November to February, making it a great time for wildlife viewing. If you prefer milder temperatures and fewer crowds, travel during the spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) shoulder seasons.

    – Equatorial Africa

Countries along the equator, like Kenya, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, have relatively stable temperatures year-round. However, these regions often experience wet and dry seasons. The dry season (June to October) is ideal for wildlife safaris as animals gather around water sources, while the wet season (November to May) brings lush landscapes and bird migrations.

#2. Migration and Wildlife

If witnessing the Great Wildebeest Migration in East Africa is high on your bucket list, plan your visit between July and October. During this time, millions of wildebeests, zebras, and other herbivores cross the Serengeti in Tanzania and Maasai Mara in Kenya, creating one of nature’s most incredible spectacles.

#3. Festivals and Cultural Events

Africa is rich in cultural diversity, and visiting during festivals and cultural events can be a memorable experience. Most of the best cities in Africa are well known for their festivals and cultural events which make them an interesting place to visit. For instance, the Timket Festival in Ethiopia, the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music in Morocco, and the Cape Town Jazz Festival in South Africa are just a few examples of vibrant cultural celebrations you can plan your trip around.

#4. Avoiding Crowds

If you prefer to avoid the peak tourist season and enjoy more solitude, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons. These periods often offer pleasant weather and fewer crowds.

#5. Budget Considerations

Traveling during the off-peak or shoulder seasons can sometimes lead to lower prices on accommodations and flights, which can help stretch your budget further.

#6. Beach Destinations

Aim for the dry season for a beach vacation to ensure sunny and pleasant weather. Countries like Mauritius, Seychelles, and Mozambique are popular for their stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters.

Tourist watching an elephant crossing a river in the Chobe National Park in Botswana, Africa; Concept for travel safari and travel in Africa

Botswana is an excellent choice for a well-rounded, first-time safari – though it can be a pricey one © Getty Images

So you want to see a lion in the wild? Terrific. Now comes the tricky part: choosing where to go on your first safari.

Which countries offer the easiest introduction to the continent for first-time travelers? Which countries are best for wildlife?

Let us help you cut through the overwhelming options and plan your first safari to Africa for blockbuster wildlife watching – without feeling overwhelmed.

Meerkats stand to attention as humans walk by

Planning a safari in Botswana

Why botswana.

Water-based safaris, exclusivity, privacy and high-quality camps in captivating areas: Botswana is one of Africa’s premier wildlife-watching destinations. Its prolific wildlife inhabits extraordinary landscapes, including the Chobe River, the Okavango Delta  and the salt pans of Makgadikgadi .

The easiest choice for your trip,  Chobe National Park is home to the world’s largest concentration of elephants, as well as a host of easy-to-spot big cats, buffaloes, giraffes and zebras, making it perfect for first-timers. The best way to see Africa’s elephant capital is to board a boat and cruise the Chobe River’s wildlife-rich shores. From here, you can travel into the Okavango Delta, where you can splurge on a luxury safari and take a mokoro  (dugout canoe) through the wetlands, before forging on into the Makgadikgadi salt pans to mingle with meerkats.

Botswana’s appeal and ease, however, come with a (big) caveat: the cost. To avoid the pitfalls of mass tourism, most luxury lodges and camps lie in concession areas rented out by the government to enforce a high-value, low-volume responsible-tourism strategy. The best reserves sit in the swamps of the Okavango Delta, and visitors fly in on small bush planes from Maun or Kasane. Mobile safaris – group trips that take you from site to site, often involving camping along the way – are a more cost-effective alternative: you can combine time in  Moremi Game Reserve  with Chobe National Park.

Best time to visit for a safari in Botswana

The high and dry season from June to October is the best wildlife-watching time , and also when water levels are generally at their highest in the Okavango Delta, allowing you to glide along the channels in a mokoro .

Where to stay on safari in Botswana

In and around Chobe National Park, we recommend  Chobe Game Lodge , Chobe Safari Lodge  and Chobe Bakwena , with Chobe Game Lodge being the only one inside the park. For photographers, Pangolin Chobe Hotel has specialist boats with swivel seats and gimbal mounts to snap that Attenborough moment on the Chobe River.

You can combine Chobe with the Okavango Delta through scheduled group mobile safaris with Bush Ways or Letaka . If you’re after a luxury experience in an exceptionally wild, isolated area, Mombo Camp is probably the Okavango’s most exclusive and legendary lodge, with predators galore (and a pretty price tag). Mma Dinare Camp (which offers affordable road transfers), 4 Rivers Camp , Shinde Camp and Camp Moremi are well situated for spotting excellent big game. Xugana Island Lodge , Setari Camp and Mopiri Camp are wonderful for experiencing the waterways, and offer fishing and birding opportunities by boat. Mogotlho Safari Lodge is also accessible for self-drivers, and occupies a lovely position on the Khwai River near Mababe. Want a more adventurous, budget-friendly option? Try a fully catered, accommodated mokoro campout excursion that departs from Sitatunga Camp , south of Maun.

Trips to meet the cute meerkats of the Makgadikgadi salt pans can be arranged through San Camp, Jack’s Camp or Camp Kalahari, with Planet Baobab as the best budget-friendly option with self-drive access.

Budgeting and costs for a safari in Botswana

Stays at isolated camps in the Okavango Delta start at roughly $650 per person, per night and can go up to an eye-watering $4000 a night. At approximately $300, Chobe National Park lodges are more affordable – so stretch out your days here to keep costs down. For better pricing on accommodations, travel during the shoulder season (April to May and October to November). Finally, check the distance between your luxury lodge and Maun to reduce the return-ticket cost. Some camps offer road transfers or boating access between camps to minimize travel costs.

Animals crossing the Mara River during the Great Migration between Tanzania and Kenya

Planning a safari in Kenya

Kenya ’s wildlife offering is outstanding, with the Great Migration in particular at the top of many bucket lists – so it’s no surprise that safaris have been a thing in Kenya since the very concept was invented (indeed, safari translates to “journey” in Swahili). Do keep in mind, though, that this track record does make Kenya one of the busiest, most popular wildlife destinations on the continent.

A renowned annual phenomenon, the Great Migration sees millions of wildebeest and zebras cross the Mara River from the Serengeti in southern Tanzania into Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve . The country’s semi-nomadic Maasai communities and their time-honored warrior traditions are another source of fascination. Visitors can support community-powered tourism by visiting the private reserves surrounding the Mara, which are leased to different safari companies. A guided bush walk with a Maasai warrior will let you experience this culture’s deep connection with the land.

The main safari circuit couples Lake Nakuru with the Masai Mara and Amboseli (where Mt Kilimanjaro provides a staggering backdrop). Tsavo West , Tsavo East and Samburu are popular add-ons, if you have extra time. Any combination of these parks should ensure ample sightings of big cats, plenty of elephants, a few rhinos and all of the plains animals, such as buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, and all manner of gazelle and antelope species. Want even more? Extend your stay by another week and scale Mt Kenya , Africa’s second-highest peak (after Kilimanjaro).

Most travelers just pass through Nairobi , staying long enough to visit Nairobi National Park . An extraordinarily well-stocked park on the cusp of one of Africa’s largest cities and easily accessible, Kenya’s original game reserve has wildlife in abundance, from lions, leopards, and buffaloes to the endangered black rhino and around 400 species of birdlife.

Generally, Kenya is viewed as a better choice for family safaris, those on a budget and those on a tight timeline.

Best time to visit for a safari in Kenya

July to October and January to February are the best times to see the Great Migration, when a million-plus wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, cross the crocodile-infested Mara River to graze on the lush grasses of the Masai Mara. With unrestricted visitor numbers, some areas can get crowded.

Where to stay on safari in Kenya

Kenya has hundreds of excellent lodges and tented camps, standards of service from local staff are generally high, and tour operators are experts at the logistics of moving between national parks for each leg of your safari itinerary.

Cottar’s 1920s Camp has entertained guests in high style for over 100 years, while “gentle on the earth” takes on a whole new meaning at Emboo River Camp , whose team will have you floating through the grasslands of the Masai Mara in the region’s first electric game drive vehicles.

Good value but still luxurious, Ol Tukai Lodge sits within Amboseli Park, with views of Kilimanjaro from the bar; nearby Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge is a comfortable family-friendly option. In Nairobi,  Giraffe Manor  provides a memorable breakfast spread before a visit to the city’s park; all accommodations in the upmarket Karen and Langata areas are close to the main entrance.

Budgeting and costs for a safari in Kenya

Masai Mara National Reserve is the most wallet-friendly location for seeing the wildebeest migration. Despite having a shorter migration season, Kenya has more flights, more tourists, stiffer competition and a greater variety of affordable accommodations than next-door Tanzania. Expect to pay anything from $150 to $1000 per person, per night.

For a cheaper safari, book between the short and long rains (January to March), when prices are usually lower than during the peak season. Nairobi National Park charges $40 to non-residents for entry, while admission to Masai Mara is $80 for 24 hours if you stay outside the reserve, and $70 if you stay inside.

A family of five wild giraffes standing in a dry savannah landscape near Okaukuejo waterhole in Etosha National Park in Namibia, Africa.

Planning a safari in Namibia

Why namibia.

Two reasons: self-driving independence and dramatic desert scenery. While a 4WD African safari is always an ambitious undertaking, Namibia has good roads, well-equipped campsites and reasonably priced rental vehicles. This is one of the easiest Southern African countries to explore from the driver’s seat.

The classic circuit starts in Windhoek , where you’ll rent a fully equipped 4WD camper van or a decent gravel-road car. From there, you’ll head to Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert for incredible vistas, circle up to Swakopmund for coastal adventures and end at Etosha National Park , where elephants, rhinos and giraffes strut their stuff.

Etosha is Namibia’s version of South Africa’s Kruger National Park, with roads and facilities suitable for a self-driving budget safari. Each public camp overlooks a busy water hole, where game moves in and out to drink during the dry season. The camp is floodlit by night, which means you won’t need to leave once you settle in.

Best time to visit for a safari in Namibia

Etosha is well-known for its productive water holes, and peak game viewing is from June to October, when wildlife flocks to these oases dotted throughout the park. This is also a cooler time of year to climb the dramatic dunes such as  Dune 45 at Sossusvlei.

Where to stay on safari in Namibia

Arranging everything through the  Gondwana Collection is hands-down the easiest and best way to organize a self-driving safari. This group has a portfolio of accommodations in all the key tourist spots, ranging from well-serviced campsites to glamping tents and swank lodges filled with character. Favorites include the quirky Desert Grace and Namib Dune Star Camp (with its alfresco beds) near Sossusvlei, and The Delight in Swakopmund. A sister company,  Namibia2Go , offers car rentals with comprehensive insurance.

As an alternative, you can book campsites and chalets inside the parks with the government-run Namibia Wildlife Resorts . Okaukuejo Rest Camp lies inside the perimeter of Etosha and is the place to watch at the water hole.

Budgeting and costs for a safari in Namibia

At about $800, a full week’s vehicle rental is cheaper than a single night’s stay at a luxury lodge in the Okavango Delta. Due to the vast distances between destinations in Namibia, however, fuel expenses can add up fast. National parks and private campsites offer affordable camping fees, though luxury accommodations will (understandably) be more expensive. For camping, expect to pay $20 to $50 per person, per night for camping; for lodges, $100 to $300.

Visitors watch a lion walk in front of their open safari vehicle at Madikwe Game Reserve at the border with Botswana

Planning a safari in South Africa

Why south africa.

Expect bush, beach and fine wine. From iconic Kruger National Park to the picturesque landscapes of KwaZulu-Natal , South Africa offers a safari experience that caters to all levels of adventurers.

Kruger is the easiest and most rewarding safari destination for first-timers and budget travelers. You can see the Big Five (lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffaloes), as well as cheetahs, giraffes, African wild dogs and hundreds of bird species. Drive the park’s paved roads yourself if you’re on a budget, or visit private reserves like Sabi Sands or Thornybush for exclusive guided experiences, plus a better chance to see the Big Five in a short period.

Lesser-known reserves in KwaZulu-Natal are equally impressive. Hluhluwe-iMfolozi is just as accessible as Kruger from the city of Durban , and has excellent facilities for travelers on all budgets; expect to spot rhinos, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, giraffes and wildebeest. (The big cats are a little more challenging to see here.) Nearby Phinda Private Game Reserve offers stunning high-end stays – plus the possibility of a beach day or scuba diving at Sodwana Bay .

Madikwe Game Reserve in North West Province is close to the Botswana border and a four-hour drive from Johannesburg , making it popular for South Africans looking for a safari. It’s also a malaria-free option for families with young children.

Combine any of these safari parks with a flight south to Cape Town , and you’ll add fine wine, world-class restaurants and a seaside safari – visiting the  African penguins of Boulders Beach – to your itinerary.

Best time to visit for a safari in South Africa

While South Africa is a year-round destination , most visitors love the cooler, dry season between May and August. During these months, wildlife is easier to spot as vegetation is more sparse and animals gather around water holes.

Where to stay on safari in South Africa

There are plenty of affordable self-catering rest camps in Kruger National Park and Hluhluwe-iMfolozi run by SANParks , the government parks agency. Kruger’s southern zone is prime game-viewing territory, with Skukuza , Lower Sabie and Letaba rest camps all favorites. Hilltop Camp in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi has terrific views, while Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge is a superb, privately run option that supports the local community.

Plush camps and lodges in the private reserves come with highly trained guides who can take you out on foot or by vehicle. You can’t go wrong at Saseka in Thornybush, Dulini in Sabi Sands, Tanda Tula in  Timbavati , Jaci’s Safari Lodge in Madikwe or any of the &Beyond accommodations in Phinda.

Budgeting and costs for a safari in South Africa

Rates range from $100 to $200 per person, per night in government-run camps. Mid-range prices start at $300 to $700 per person, per night, with a corresponding bump in accommodation and guiding quality.

Hippos in the Seronera area of the Serengeti N P, Tanzania

Planning a safari in Tanzania

Why tanzania.

Limitless plains, the epic migration and relaxing dips in the Indian Ocean. Tanzania ’s northern safari circuit includes the amazing  Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater . Exploring these places for 10 days to two weeks is a sure way to fall in love with Africa. You should consider adding a few days on the island of Zanzibar  (officially called Unguja) to make your dream trip even more memorable.

Tanzania and Kenya share similarities, both having plentiful wildlife parks and excellent safari operators. Tanzania’s vibe, though, is generally less stressful – perhaps due to the fact that the Serengeti is nearly 10 times bigger than Kenya’s Masai Mara, offering endless horizons and greater habitat variety.

In the heart of the Serengeti, the Seronera River provides big-cat and herbivore sightings year round, making it popular with visitors. Kogatende and Lamai, on the Mara River, are ideal for observing river crossings – with fewer tourists. Private reserves such as  Grumeti allow viewings of the migration without the crowds (and for a price).

The Ngorongoro Crater is only a short drive to the east from the Serengeti. In this giant collapsed volcano (or caldera), animals like lions, elephants and black rhinos are enclosed as they prowl a complete ecosystem of pretty plains and dramatic forests. Note that such assets do draw the crowds in peak season.

Best time to visit for a safari in Tanzania

Plan a visit between January and March to witness the migration of wildebeest – and their newborns – passing through the Ngorongoro and Ndutu regions. (Get as early a start as possible to avoid day-trippers.) The best time to witness the famous wildebeest river crossings in the Serengeti is during the peak season, from July to August.

Where to stay on safari in Tanzania

Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge is an upmarket accommodation inspired by traditional Tanzanian architecture; its popular mobile-safari offering is Kiota Camp. Run entirely by women,  Dunia Camp is a luxury tented property situated in prime lion territory. Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is a great value-for-money permanent lodge conveniently located near the entrance to the Ngorongoro Crater. For an even more budget-friendly option, consider  Bougainvillea Safari Lodge . For a different kind of stay, book a stay  Gibb’s Farm , which is situated on a working coffee farm and offers campfire storytelling and other fun extras.

On the coast, Chumbe Island in Zanzibar/Unguja is a highly rated, ecofriendly property that offers sensational snorkeling in a protected marine reserve. In the historic heart of  Stone Town , the best-value stay is Zanzibar Coffee House , dating from the 19th century.

Budgeting and costs for a safari in Tanzania

Expect to pay anything from $250 to $950 per room, per night, during your stay in Tanzania. Entry fees at Serengeti National Park for foreign tourists are $70 (peak season) and $60 (low season). To visit the Ngorongoro Crater, you’ll pay $250 for a vehicle, in addition to the same entry fee. These fees are typically included in organized safari packages.

Several southern carmine bee-eaters perching on an ochre-coloured rock in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

Planning a safari in Zambia

Why zambia.

Track rhinos, witness an awe-inspiring cascade and join a walking safari to experience nature up close. Indeed,  Zambia is celebrated worldwide as the birthplace of the safari on foot, during which, under the guidance of two armed rangers, rhino tracking in nearby Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park will bring you close to these magnificent animals – only a taste of what’s to come at South Luangwa.

Livingstone , the tourist capital of Zambia, lets you gaze at another (non-living) marvel: mighty Mosi-oa-Tunya, better known as  Victoria Falls . If the 935 cu meters (33,000 cu ft) of water that pours over the falls each second is not heart-pumping enough, there are plenty of other thrilling activities to enjoy , such as white-water rafting on the Zambezi River and bungee jumping (also available on the Zimbabwe side of Victoria Falls). During July and August, you can even take a refreshing dip in the natural infinity pool at the edge of the falls.

Several small and rustic camps in the Luangwa Valley cater just to walking safaris – a thrilling alternative to traditional game drives. These camps are mainly located in South Luangwa National Park .

Best time to visit for a safari in Zambia

Peak game viewing is from June to October, and Victoria Falls is at its best on the Zambia side from March to May.

Where to stay on safari in Zambia

Flatdogs Camp in South Luangwa National Park offers family-friendly luxury. In Livingstone, Jollyboys Backpackers provides a vibey base from which to explore town. The Victoria Falls Waterfront provides a free shuttle to the main event – but if you want to stay at the falls with unlimited access, the swish Royal Livingstone Resort is top-notch; the three-star Avani Victoria Falls Resort is next door.

Green Safaris operates a great circuit of camps in Zambia if you want to combine Victoria Falls with South Luangwa. Live the Robinson Crusoe life at Sindabezi Island Lodge on the Zambezi, and then head into the bush at Shawa Luangwa Camp . You can’t go wrong with walking-safari operators Time + Tide (its  Kakuli is a classic camp that’s been open since 1950), or Robin Pope .

Budgeting and costs for a safari in Zambia

Consider getting the KAZA UniVisa , a special $50 pass that allows for unlimited crossings between Zambia and Zimbabwe, plus a one-day trip to Botswana (via the Kazungula border crossing), within 30 days. Budget $250 to $700 per person, per night for lodging.

Planning a safari in Zimbabwe

Why zimbabwe.

The adventurous choice for a first-time safari, Zimbabwe has arguably the best guides in Africa. The easiest way to experience it all? Spend three days in Victoria Falls. Since it’s one of the country’s most popular tourist towns, you’ll find plenty to see, do and eat.

The meandering rainforest walkway in Zimbabwe is where the majority of Victoria Falls viewpoints lie. This is a better option for experiencing the falls during during the dry season (May to October), when water levels on the Zambian side lessen. On some evenings and during the full moon,  Victoria Falls National Park in Zimbabwe remains open at night for dazzling stargazing.

After a day of adrenaline-fueled bungee jumping, white-water rafting, zip-lining or hovering in a helicopter above Batoka Gorge, afternoon tea at the Victoria Falls Hotel , served every day between 3pm and 6pm, offers some refined relaxation, as you share a tiered stand of pretty sandwiches and delicate pastries beside the manicured lawns. If this lies beyond your budget, enjoy a simple gin-and-tonic sundowner – or head to the Wild Horizons Lookout Café .

The wildlife around here is less prolific than nearby Chobe National Park in Botswana (which you can visit on a day trip or easily combine with Victoria Falls). Yet a boat cruise allows for spottings of hippos, crocodiles and the occasional elephant. A 45-minute flight or two-hour drive away,  Hwange National Park is where you’ll find bigger game.

Best time to visit for a safari in Zimbabwe

There is fantastic wildlife viewing during the dry months, from May to October. Victoria Falls is at its peak from March to May.

Where to stay on safari in Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls Safari Lodge sits on a ridge and overlooks a water hole frequented by buffaloes and other beasts. Nkosi Guest Lodge is a pretty, upmarket inn, while Ilala Lodge Hotel is just a 10-minute walk from Victoria Falls. The Victoria Falls Hotel, the iconic grande dame, offers perhaps the best views. Further afield, you can ensconce yourself in the bush at  Mpala Jena , about 40km (25 miles) upstream. In Hwange, The Hide , Camp Hwange  and Somalisa are all visitor favorites.

Budgeting and costs for a safari in Zimbabwe

Entry to Victoria Falls is $50. With the wide range of accommodation options, you can spend $150 to $700 per person, per night.

Incredible lighthouse picture from Maine

From CNN's Chris Lau

A long-exposure photo shows the aurora borealis over Portland, Maine, on May 10.

Among a flurry of surreal images capturing the dazzling auroras is one taken by Benjamin Williamson of a lighthouse in Portland, Maine.

"It's one of the most incredible things I've ever seen, the awe and wonder," Williamson told CNN.

He said he used a long-exposure technique to snap the shot, but did not edit it.

If you still haven't seen the aurora, hold on for another 30 minutes to an hour, according to CNN meteorologist Chad Myers.

The next wave of coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, which cause the aurora, is about to arrive, he said.

"Just wait a minute because things are going to start to ramp up here," he said, adding that the increase could arrive "anytime now." "When it comes, get outside, get ready, put your coat on."

For those who are too busy to witness the phenomenon tonight, Myers said the aurora is expected to last three nights.

Why does the aurora last for a weekend?

By CNN's Chris Lau

The northern lights can be seen from Eaton Rapids, Michigan, on May 10.

Generally, it takes just eight minutes for light to travel 93 million miles to the Earth from the sun, but astrophysicist Janna Levin said the energized particles causing the current wave of aurora travel a lot slower, causing the phenomenon to last for the weekend.

"Some of these mass ejections are trillions of kilograms," she said. "They're slower. So they're taking longer, but still hours, maybe tens of hours."

Here's how the solar storm looks in the South and on the East Coast

The aurora was visible across the East Coast and in the South Friday.

Here's how it looked in Chester, South Carolina.

Down in Florida, waves of color swam through the sky.

Up north in New Jersey, a purple-ish haze could be seen in the sky.

Will solar storms get more intense and risky in the future?

The answer is probably not in the short term, according to astrophysicist Hakeem Oluseyi.

He said scientists study what is constantly happening on the surface of the sun and have found a pattern.

“Geological data shows us that in the past the sun was way more active than it is today. It has cycles where it goes very quiet ... and you have events that show that the solar activity was much, much greater,” he told CNN. “So there's no evidence that we're going to see those big maxima this cycle."

But the astrophysicist also spoke of a caveat - the limitations of modern science.

“Even though it's predictable in the short term, we still don't quite understand what creates the magnetic fields in the sun,” he said, adding: “That's why NASA has so many satellites looking at the sun.”

A series of solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun are creating dazzling auroras across the globe .

The rare solar storm may also disrupt communications. The last time a solar storm of this magnitude reached Earth was in October 2003, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center.

Behind dazzling aurora could lie “real danger,” Bill Nye the Science Guy says

Bill Nye the Science Guy speaks to CNN on Friday, May 10.

The massive solar storm could present “a real danger,” especially with the modern world relying so much on electricity, according to Bill Nye the Science Guy , a science educator and engineer.

Scientists are warning an increase in solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun have the potential to disrupt communication on Earth into the weekend. Solar flares can affect communications and GPS almost immediately because they disrupt Earth’s ionosphere, or part of the upper atmosphere. Energetic particles released by the sun can also disrupt electronics on spacecraft and affect astronauts without proper protection within 20 minutes to several hours.

In comparison to tonight's event, Nye drew comparisons with another incident in 1859, known as the Carrington Event, when telegraph communications were severely affected.

“The other thing, everybody, that is a real danger to our technological society, different from 1859, is how much we depend on electricity and our electronics and so on,” Nye said. "None of us really in the developed world could go very long without electricity."

He noted that there are systems in place to minimize the impact, but “stuff might go wrong,” stressing that not all transformers are equipped to withstand such a solar event.

“It depends on the strength of the event and it depends on how much of our infrastructures are prepared for this the sort of thing,” he said.

Here's where clouds will block the view of the northern lights in the US

From CNN's Angela Fritz

An infrared satellite image taken around 10:30 p.m. ET.

After an incredibly stormy week, most of the Lower 48 has clear skies to see the northern lights. But there are some areas where clouds and rainy weather are spoiling the view.

A deck of clouds is blocking the sky in the Northeast, from parts of Virginia into Maine, as an area of low pressure spins off the East Coast.

In the Midwest, the aurora will be hard to see through thick clouds in parts of Wisconsin, Michigan — including the Upper Peninsula — and Illinois.

A stripe of clouds is tracking across Texas, including Dallas-Forth Worth, and into Louisiana.

And in the Southwest, patchy clouds across the the Four Corners region could make the northern lights difficult to spot.

Aurora seen at least as far south as Georgia

Barely visible to the naked eye, the aurora can be seen in Atlanta in the 10 p.m. ET hour.

It is easier to see through photographs using a long exposure. The photos below, taken by CNN's Eric Zerkel and Emily Smith, used 3- and 10-second exposures.

How to Observe the Northern Lights This Weekend

The Space Weather Prediction Center said solar activity would be high again on Saturday.

Northern Lights Glow in the Sky Amid Solar Storm

Powerful solar flare activity made the aurora borealis visible unusually far south..

[Laughing] Holy moly. I know. This — I thought it would just be over on the horizon a little — Behind us, too. Yeah. A little green on the horizon. Nothing like this. This is — This is like, ‘Oh, my god.’ Everywhere.

Keep an eye on the skies on Saturday night for what could be another dazzling display of nature — or not, depending on your location and weather conditions.

An unusual amount of solar flare activity means that the aurora borealis, or the northern lights, could continue to appear over the weekend.

The solar storm was a level 5 on Friday, which gave some star gazers a clear view of streaks of green, purple and red that arced across the skies. Those conditions are expected to continue, Mike Bettwy, the operations chief of the Space Weather Prediction Center, said on Saturday.

“It should be fairly similar to what we saw last night, maybe not as widespread but fairly close,” Mr. Bettwy said.

“Depending on how everything evolves,” he added, “tomorrow night might actually be better than tonight” for views of the aurora.

In areas with clear skies, the display on Sunday could be similar to what people witnessed on Friday.

If you’re in a place with a lot of bright lights — like a city — it’s going to be hard to see anything. And then there are other complications, like the weather.

Two weather systems on Saturday night could impair viewing of the solar display, said Bryan Jackson, a forecaster at the Weather Prediction Center.

The Northeast is likely to be overcast because of a cloud system that could stretch from the Midwest and center over Pennsylvania. Cloud coverage might also extend as far as Maine, with the potential to clear around New Hampshire.

“This event is strong enough that the Northeast United States pretty much universally has a good shot at seeing it,” Mr. Bettwy said. “It’s just a matter of making sure that the cloud cover is absent.”

A second storm system, which was predicted to produce a fair amount of rain and cloud coverage, is possible over the Southwest.

Mr. Jackson said Michigan was likely to have clear skies between waves of rain. Other regions of the country could have clear views, too.

“In Seattle, it was pretty clear last night and it looks to be pretty clear again,” Mr. Jackson said on Saturday. “Portions of the southern Rockies, portions of the southern Plains are not overcast, but not completely clear either.”

The lights were particularly brilliant over England on Friday, and images of the solar show awed onlookers in parts of Maine and Massachusetts.

A tip: If you are in a clear area, even south of where the aurora is forecast, snap a picture or record a video with your cellphone.

The sensor on the camera is more sensitive to the wavelengths produced by the aurora and may produce an image you can’t see with the naked eye.

Why is this happening?

A severe solar storm is brewing.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center on Friday issued a rare warning after a solar outburst reached Earth.

As nuclear reactions occur on the sun, it routinely expels material from its surface.

Officials said that the solar activity could potentially cause electrical outages or interfere with navigation and communication systems.

When is this happening?

The expelled material from the sun could reach Earth’s atmosphere by Friday afternoon or evening, officials said.

“What we’re expecting over the next couple of days should be more significant than what we’ve seen, certainly so far,” Mike Bettwy, the operations chief at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, said at a news conference on Friday.

What’s flaring up?

The Space Weather Prediction Center said on Friday night that we were experiencing an extreme solar storm, a level 5 , up from a level 4 earlier in the day .

The last extreme event happened in October 2003 and resulted in power failures in Sweden and damaged transformers in South Africa, the center said.

The current storm is caused by a cluster of sunspots — dark, cool regions on the solar surface. The cluster is flaring and ejecting material every six to 12 hours.

“We anticipate that we’re going to get one shock after another through the weekend,” said Brent Gordon, chief of the space weather services branch at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.
