Welcome to Taiwan

The Tourism Administration has worked hard to highlight Taiwan to the world amid increasing international competition during the current post-pandemic revival in global tourism. In 2023, Taiwan was once again ranked among the world’s top-three non-OIC tourist destinations in the Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI), and was named as a 2023 “Favorite Adventure Destination” by US-based web publisher Trazee Travel. In addition, stories from six of Taiwan’s national scenic area administration (NSAA) offices were recognized among the Top 100 at the Global Green Destination Day Conference. In March 2024, two NSAA offices received “Green Destinations Top 100 Story Awards” at the International Travel Fair Berlin (ITB).

Taiwan is a unique alpine island with a diversity of topographies, ecologies and cultures. Its people are friendly and enthusiastic. Taiwan’s island-circling railway lines and bicycle trails, as well as the national greenways traversed by its ancestral peoples, are all important tourism resources. The Tourism Administration has attracted the attention of international tourists with its "Mountains, Waters, and Fun Around the Island" campaign. In addition, it is promoting 2024 as the year of “Round-Island Fun in Taiwan” to welcome tourists from near and far to Taiwan through all four seasons.

In line with international trends, the Tourism Administration is also promoting themes such as 1) implementing “Sustainable Taiwan” in its scenic area management, 2) enhancing tourism software and hardware, 3) building and shaping the Taiwan tourism brand, and 4) developing Taiwan into a unique tourism destination.

Taiwan's natural features, culture and technical development all support inbound tourism. Visitors can experience a wide variety of traditional celebrations, religious practices and ethnic cultures. Taiwan welcomes friends from all over the world. Regardless of age or interests, an attractive itinerary awaits. Discover Taiwan and enjoy a new and interesting travel experience!

All mobile network operators in Taiwan offer tourist sims and prepaid sim cards that include data across very extensive mobile networks. Basically, no matter who you choose you will have fast internet everywhere in Taiwan.

I recommend Chungwha Telecom’s tourist sim card as it offers the best value compared to the other operators. YOu can choose from a range of 4G and 5G options for 3, 5, 7, 10, 15 or 30 day passes. The 5, 7 and 10 day passes cost the same at 500 NTD and include unlimited data. This is what I recommend to most people visiting Taiwan.

If you are visiting for longer, then you should purchase the 15 or 30 day pass for 700 NTD or 1,000 NTD respectively.

For most people the 4G passes above are perfectly fine, but if you want the fastest internet possible then there are 3, 5 and 7 day passes for 500, 600 and 800 NTD respectively that offer faster 5G internet instead.

Stores will only offer to sell tourist sims so you won’t be able to buy a local package instead, so bear in mind you’ll almost certainly need to purchase the tourist sim packages described above.

Another option to consider is the Airalo Taiwan eSim . However, the Chungwha sim cards come with unlimited data, so for the price they are a much better deal. As eSims are always better and more convenient than physical sim cards, I recommend considering this option if you are visiting Taiwan on a short trip and don’t wish to waste time visiting a store and installing a physical sim card. Otherwise, the Chungwha tourist sim is a better deal.

Taiwan Sim Card Prices

A Tourist Sim Card in Taiwan costs 500 NTD in March 2024, however, the exact price will often depend on the store you visit and the plan you choose.

Alternatively, an eSim in Taiwan will cost between $7 USD and $31.50 USD. This, again, depends on how much data you require and which eSim provider you choose.

I generally recommend this Airalo plan for most tourists visiting Taiwan which includes 5GB of data which is valid for 30 days and costs $21 USD.

In Taiwan, the main sim card providers are Chunghwa Telecom, Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET), and Taiwan Mobile. How to Get a Sim Card in Taiwan

Identify mobile providers: Chunghwa Telecom, Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET) and Taiwan Mobile are your best options in Taiwan.

Find your nearest store: Locate a store or retailer by searching on Google Maps for your nearest store or asking at your hotel reception. I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can usually be found in major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. If possible, I always recommend to to avoid airports and head in to an official store in the city.

Bring the necessary documents: It is always a good idea to carry your passport or identification documents for sim card registration purposes. We’ve found most providers will need to confirm your identity to provide a sim card and it can be a major hassle to head to a store only to have to come back again later with your passport.

Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are a good starting point, but the staff will usually be able to suggest the best option.

Pay and activate your card: Pay for the SIM card and plan, and the staff will activate it for you.

Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always search for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine.

Where to Get a Sim Card in Taiwan

At the airport.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Taiwan at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.

However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.

In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.

If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in Taiwan then you will be in luck. All major international airports in Taiwan have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.

If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.

I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as Chunghwa Telecom, Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET) and Taiwan Mobile. Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in Taiwan are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.

Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.

If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in Taiwan with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.

The first option is to buy your sim card in advance via SimOptions, which is a company that will prepare and ship a sim card directly to your door. It’s a reliable and effective service, but with the invention of eSims it’s becoming obsolete.

The better option is to purchase an eSim online. We’ve written more on that below!

Taiwan eSim

An eSim is a digital version of a traditional sim card and is most likely the future of connectivity for mobile devices. The convenience of no longer visiting a store, handing over your passport and purchasing a physical sim card is quickly making physical sim cards obsolete in favour of eSims.

We recommend Airalo’s eSim when travelling to Taiwan. The Airalo Taiwan eSim offers fast internet speeds, wide coverage and extremely competitive prices making it a far more compelling option than purchasing a physical sim card from any of the local sim card providers.

In order to get set up with an Airalo eSim , all you need to do is visit Airalo here and purchase the eSim online (the $21 USD plan is suitable for most travellers). Once you’ve purchased the sim card Airalo will email you instructions and a QR code. Following these instructions should take just a couple of minutes, then you’ll have a sim card in Taiwan without having to venture outside.

Airalo Taiwan

Our preferred eSim provider in Taiwan is Airalo . We used them, alongside a local sim card on another device, for our most recent trip to Taiwan and found the service to be equal to the local sim card but without the hassle of acquiring a sim card in a store.

Airalo’s Taiwan eSim uses the Chungwa and Taiwan Mobile networks to provide data and connect users to the internet. You can expect very good coverage and reliability with the Chungwa and Taiwan Mobile networksnetwork as they are amongst the best mobile internet operators in Taiwan.

Here are the plans and prices for Airalo’s Taiwan eSim:

1GB data valid for 7 days – Price: $7 USD 3GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $14 USD 5GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $21 USD 10GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $31.50 USD

For most travellers we recommend the 5GB data plan for $21 USD which is valid for 30 days. Some travellers may prefer a larger plan, whilst travellers visiting for just a couple of days may be fine with a smaller plan.

Holafly Taiwan

An alternative eSim provider we can recommend is Holafly.

Holafly’s eSim is a suitable option for travellers who require large amounts of data, such as digital nomads and people who work online while they travel. All of Holafly’s Taiwan eSims offer unlimited data.

Holafly’s Taiwan eSim uses the Chunghwa Telecom / Taiwan Mobilenetwork to provide data and connect users to the internet. This network will provide reliable speeds and coverage while in Taiwan

Here are the plans and prices for Holafly’s Taiwan eSim:

Unlimited data valid for 5 days – Price: $19 USD Unlimited data valid for 7 days – Price: $27 USD Unlimited data valid for 10 days – Price: $34 USD Unlimited data valid for 15 days – Price: $47 USD Unlimited data valid for 20 days – Price: $54 USD Unlimited data valid for 30 days – Price: $64 USD Unlimited data valid for 60 days – Price: $84 USD Unlimited data valid for 90 days – Price: $99 USD

What is an eSim?

An eSIM, which stands for embedded SIM, is a digital SIM card that is included within a device such as a smartphone, tablet, or smartwatch. Unlike physical SIM cards, an eSIM does not require physical insertion or removal from the device.

Rather, the eSIM is built into the device’s hardware and can be remotely activated and programmed by a mobile network operator. This enables users to switch between different mobile networks or plans without the need to physically swap SIM cards.

The use of eSIM technology offers convenience, flexibility, and ease of use, particularly for frequent travelers or individuals who frequently switch between different mobile networks or travel internationally. It eliminates the necessity of purchasing and inserting physical SIM cards, making it more convenient for managing multiple mobile connections on a single device.

To activate an eSIM, users can either scan a QR code provided by their mobile network operator or manually input the activation details. Once activated, the device can connect to the desired mobile network and enjoy voice, data, and messaging services as with a traditional SIM card.

Why Use an eSim?

There are several reasons why using an eSIM can be beneficial. One of the main benefits is convenience. With an eSIM, there is no need to physically insert or remove a SIM card when switching between mobile networks or plans. This is especially helpful for frequent travelers who may need to switch networks or use local SIM cards in different countries.

Another advantage of eSIM technology is its dual SIM functionality. This means you can have two active mobile numbers on the same device. This is useful for separating personal and work numbers or managing multiple phone lines.

Using an eSIM also saves space. Since eSIMs are embedded within the device, there is no need for a physical SIM card slot. This allows manufacturers to make devices smaller or use the extra space for other components.

With eSIMs, activation and management of mobile plans can be done remotely over the air. This eliminates the need for a physical SIM card or visiting a store to activate or switch to a new mobile plan. It offers greater flexibility and convenience for managing your mobile connectivity.

Finally, using an eSIM-compatible device ensures future-proofing. As eSIM technology becomes more popular, more mobile networks and service providers are offering support for eSIMs. By using an eSIM, you can take advantage of new services and offerings as they become available.

Overall, eSIM technology provides flexibility, convenience, and future-proofing for mobile connectivity, making it a compelling choice for many users.

eSim Supported Phones

eSIM technology is becoming increasingly popular and is supported by a growing number of smartphones and other devices. Here are some examples of eSIM-compatible phones:

Apple iPhone series (iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, etc.): Apple was one of the early adopters of eSIM technology and offers support for eSIM on various iPhone models.

Google Pixel series (Pixel 3, Pixel 4, Pixel 5, etc.): Google’s Pixel smartphones also support eSIM functionality, allowing users to activate and use eSIMs.

Samsung Galaxy series (Galaxy S22, Galaxy Note 20, etc.): Many of Samsung’s flagship devices now come with eSIM support, enabling users to utilize eSIM technology.

OnePlus devices (OnePlus 7, OnePlus 8, etc.): OnePlus has included eSIM support in some of its smartphone models, offering users the flexibility of using eSIMs.

Motorola Razr (2020): The latest iteration of the iconic Motorola Razr features eSIM compatibility, enabling users to use eSIMs for cellular connectivity.

These are just a few examples, and the list of eSIM-compatible phones continues to expand as more manufacturers embrace this technology. There’s a very strong chance your phone supports eSims so if you’re unsure we recommend looking it up on our list of eSim supported phones .

How to Use an eSim

Using an eSim is new for many travellers, however, the good news is it’s surprisingly easy to get set up – even for the technologically challenged!

Here’s a general guide on how to use an eSIM:

Check eSIM Compatibility: Ensure that your device supports eSIM functionality. Many newer smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and other devices are eSIM compatible including all iPhones produced since 2018.

Obtain an eSIM: There are multiple ways to acquire an eSIM. You can purchase an eSIM online from a provider like Airalo (which we recommend) or directly from a mobile network operator. Some devices also allow you to scan a QR code provided by your carrier to download the eSIM profile.

Activate the eSIM: Your eSim provider will send you instructions to activate the sim. This will usually involve scanning a QR code, entering an activation code, or downloading the eSIM profile directly onto your device.

Set up the eSIM: Once activated, your device will guide you through the eSIM setup process. This typically involves selecting the eSIM as your preferred mobile plan, configuring settings like data roaming, and entering any necessary authentication details.

Enjoy the Connection: Once the eSIM is set up, you can use it as you would with a physical SIM card. Make calls, send messages, browse the internet, and use data services as needed. You can also switch between eSIM profiles if you have multiple eSIMs installed on your device.

Overview

Travel Tourism Market

Sources: National Travel and Tourism Office with the U.S. Department of Commerce

The United States is the top long-haul destination for Taiwan’s outbound travelers. According to the National Travel and Tourism Office of the U.S. Department of Commerce, the United States welcomed 50,470 tourists from Taiwan in 2021. Though the pandemic depressed these inflows, travel volumes have begun to return to their pre-Covid levels over the past two years. In 2022, the U.S. welcomed 137,085 tourists from Taiwan, which was a three-fold increase over the previous year.

According to the National Travel and Tourism Office in the U.S. Department of Commerce, in 2020, 37% of Taiwanese tourists came to the United States to visit friends and relatives, 29% were taking a vacation or holiday, 21% were doing business and 7% were attending conferences and trade shows. Taiwan tourists took an average of 69 days to finalize their travel plans, and 8% booked a prepaid package. The average Taiwan visitor spent thirteen to twenty-eight nights in the United States, and they visited an average of 1.2 states.

The increasing ease of travel between the United States and Taiwan has led to strong gains for the U.S. tourism market.   Taiwan was admitted to the United States’ visa-waiver program in 2012 and joined the Global Entry program in 2017. Because of these changes, the majority of Taiwan’s tourist and business travelers can now travel to the United States without a visa.

As Taiwan’s travel market continues to mature, international travel is shifting towards Foreign Independent Travelers (FIT), which describes individuals who design their itinerary around personalized packages of special interest tours, flights, car rentals, and accommodations.  More than 80% of the visitors from Taiwan to the United States are FITs. Demand is expected to grow for niche travel experiences such as sports travel, adventure tours, health and wellness vacations, honeymoon tours, gastronomic holidays, cruise tours, and youth study travel.

Leading Sub-Sectors

In 2020, California was the most popular destination for Taiwan tourists in the United States by far, with more than half of all Taiwan tourists visiting the state, followed by Washington state and New York state.  The top American cities for Taiwan tourists are Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York City, Las Vegas, Seattle, San Jose, Chicago, Boston, San Diego, and Anaheim. New attractions in other American gateway cities could be highly successful among Taiwan tourists.

In 2020, Taiwan visitors enjoyed a diverse range of activities in the United States including shopping (88%), sightseeing (69%), fine dining (40%), visiting national parks/monuments (29%) visiting small towns/the countryside (29%), visiting art galleries/museums (15%), and visiting historical locations, cultural/ethnic heritage sites, casinos/gaming, ad etc.

The main sources of travel information for Taiwan tourists are airlines (44%), personal recommendations (41%), travel agency offices (21%), travel guides (19%), online travel agencies (19%), and corporate travel departments (8%).

Opportunities

American travel agencies can be directly represented in Taiwan by a representative office or by designating a General Sales Agent (GSA). They can also work with airlines and state tourism promotion organizations to conduct familiarization tours for Taiwanese tour guides and media personnel. Partnerships with these travel tour guides and media personnel are an efficient way to promote new American destinations, attractions, hotels, and restaurants to Taiwan tourists.

The Taiwan travel and tourism industry is increasingly digitized.  Taking advantage of this trend and Taiwan’s high internet penetration rate (93%), CS Taiwan has supported U.S. Convention and Tourism Bureaus by running eCommerce promotion initiatives, webinars and social media campaigns in Taiwan for their destinations and attractions.

The U.S. Commercial Service in Taiwan also offers other cost-effective services such as Single Company Promotion (SCP) or Gold Key Matching Service (GKS) to help American destinations or suppliers to expand their presence in Taiwan, or to find the right sales agents.

Major Air Routes to the United States and Hubs

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, there were about 800 weekly flights between Taiwan and the U.S., including 110 direct flights from Taiwan to U.S. gateway cities. Over the past two years, flight frequency from Taiwan to the United States is gradually returning to its pre-pandemic level. By the end of 2023, the number of flights between Taiwan and the U.S. is projected to return to at least 80% of its pre-COVID 19 level.  United Airlines provides daily services from Taiwan to the United States via Japan and operates daily non-stop service from Taipei’s Taoyuan Airport to San Francisco. Taiwan carrier EVA Air recently announced it will offer three flights a day between Taoyuan to Los Angeles and San Francisco. EVA Air also plans to increase its number of weekly flights from Taoyuan to Chicago from three to seven. China Airlines currently provides daily flights to San Francisco and Vancouver and operates 17 flights a week to the greater Los Angeles area.

In April 2023, the newly established Taiwan airline company, STARLUX Airlines, launched its first long-haul route from Taoyuan to Los Angeles, which will offer daily flights. The company is planning to open a route to San Francisco by the end of 2023.

The travel situation from Taiwan to the U.S. after COVID-19

In October 2022, Taiwan eased border controls and eliminated the quarantine requirement for foreign arrivals. In 2022, the cap on foreign arrivals tripled from the year before to more than 130 thousand.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection office ended quarantine and full-vaccination requirements for foreign visitors in March 2023. The National Travel and Tourism Office of the U.S. Department of Commerce estimates that the easing of these restrictions will lead to a 139% increase in inbound travelers from Taiwan to the United States.

The return of Taiwanese students for in-person programs is further spurring Taiwanese travel to the United States. While visiting friends/family studying in the United States, many Taiwanese also seek out local U.S. tours.

Despite price spikes in the U.S., on a recent survey Taiwanese travelers expressed a willingness to pay more when traveling internationally: 72 percent of the interviewees are willing to spend more than they spent on their last overseas trip; among those, 85 percent would accept a 20 percent increase, and 12 percent would accept a 21 percent to 40 percent price increase.

Establishing an Office

When establishing a subsidiary, branch, or representative office in Taiwan, there are logistical issues to consider and an array of forms and procedures to complete. A Chinese language company name is also required. It is strongly recommended that new firms consult with local attorneys and accountants to identify relevant industry issues and complete all necessary steps for establishing a new entity.
