Chicago hoods, map and breakdown of chicago gangs areas.

From the Chicago hoods of the South Side to the areas where Chicago gangs roam on the West Side to the heart of the Chicago ghetto areas of the North and East sides, this map breaks down the background and history of almost every Chicago hood and community while giving a tour through the streets of the urban sections of the city.

Chicago Hoods of the South Side

Before the rise of Chicago gangs there was only a small black presence on the city’s South Side. Originally, the South Side was a place for the city’s white population, but after urban renewal of the city’s historic black community of Bronzeville, or known locally as the Low Ends, with the placement of housing projects and the Dan Ryan (Interstate 90 / Interstate 94) thousands of residents were displaced into the South Side during the 1960s and 1970s.

The black community began to expand first into neighborhoods like Englewood and Back of the Yards, then followed by communities like Auburn Gresham, 95th Street, and Roseland and West Pullman, which both would become known as the Wild Hundreds, an area that became a hotbed for Chicago gangs.

The South Side also has a long history of Chicago gangs. In Englewood, the Gangster Disciples were created on South Green as the Supreme Gangsters. The Back of the Yards neighborhood once consisted of all-white and mixed gangs, like the Gaylords and the Renegade Saints. While in the South Side Chicago hoods along 83rd, 87th, and 95th streets the Black P. Stones have had a dominant presence since the 1970s.

Chicago Hoods of the West Side

From the Vice Lords to the Gangster Disciples, from the Four Corner Hustlers to the New Breeds and the Black Souls, the West Side might not have received the recognition from the media as the South Side, but within the streets of the Chicago ghetto there is little difference between either section, as the West Side is the birthplace of numerous Chicago gangs.

With the destruction to Chicago’s original black community of the Low Ends’ Bronzeville community, as well the black community of the Near West Side, the black population relocated into the heart of the West Side. Starting along Madison in East Garfield Park, the community would eventually make its way into North Lawndale and West Garfield Park, followed by the Austin neighborhood by the 1970s and 1980s.

Chicago gangs of the West Side date back to the 1950s and 1960s. Gangs were originally created for needed protection from other races, but would later become involved in local politics and efforts to better the community.  One of the largest gangs in the country are the Vice Lords, who originally began during the 1950s in Illinois juvenile facilities before starting their foundation in North Lawndale.

Chicago Hoods of the East Side

From State to the Lake, the saying that refers to the East Side of Chicago, meaning the boundaries of the East Side expand from State Street to Lake Michigan. There are multiple Chicago gangs on the East Side, like the Gangster Disciples, Four Corner Hustlers, Black Disciples, and various Vice Lord factions, but the most known has been the Almighty Black P. Stone Nation.

On the corner of 67th and Blackstone the Almighty Black P. Stone Nation began as the Blackstone Rangers in the Woodlawn neighborhood. With leaders Jeff Fort and Eugene Bull Hairston the movement of the ABPSN would expand throughout the Low Ends, the East Side, the South Side, as well small sections of the West Side, and even smaller cities well outside Chicagoland.  The growth of the Black P. Stones also led to spinoff gangs, like the Titanic Stones, Maniac Stones, and Mickey Cobras.

Outside of the Black P. Stones, Chicago gangs of the Gangster Disciples and Black Disciples, who started out as the Devil Disciples around 53rd and Woodlawn, hold much of a presence on the city’s East Side, especially around King Drive, Cottage Grove, and in South Shore.

Chicago Hoods of the North Side

When it comes to the North Side Chicago ghetto areas, outside of one of the country’s once most notorious housing project of Cabrini Green, much is not known about the North Side.  From Cabrini Green and Marshall Field, to the sections of the city known as the North Pole there are numerous Hispanic and black Chicago gangs and hoods on the North Side.

Today, after the demolishing of Cabrini Green, the main hood of the Near North Side is the Marshall Field apartment complex.  The section of the North Side that is known as the North Pole, from Rogers Park to the Uptown neighborhood, is a large diverse community of African Americans and Latinos who have been either displaced from or relocated from other Chicago neighborhoods and have been making their way into the far North Side since the 1970s and 1980s.

Chicago Hoods in the Latino Community

With prominent Latino Chicago gangs of the Latin Kings, Satan Disciples, Maniac Latin Disciples, Spanish Cobras, and Gangster Two Six, the Hispanic community of both Mexicans and Puerto Ricans have many similarities to the city’s black population.

The Mexican community began in the Pilsen and Back of the Yards neighborhoods, after relocating into Chicago as early as the 1910s.  Urban renewal in Pilsen and the closing of the Stockyards in the Back of the Yards neighborhood led the Latino population to expand into Little Village and Cicero by the 1960s and 1970s and continuing into areas like Gage Park by the 1980s.

Like other Chicago gangs, Mexican gangs were started due to the fight against other racist gangs as Mexicans were moving into predominantly white neighborhoods. In Pilsen, there were gangs like the Ambrose, the Bishops, the Satan Disciples, and the La Raza.  While in Little Village, the first and largest gang was the Gangster 2-6.

During the 1950s, Puerto Ricans began to arrive in the city of Chicago.  Most resided in Humboldt Park with Division Street being the heart of the neighborhood. As more and more Puerto Ricans arrived the population expanded to over 100,000 by the 1980s into neighborhoods like Logan Square, Belmont Cragin, and Hermosa.

The population increase caused problems during the 1950s and 1960s with other races of the neighborhoods. As a form of protection from white gangs, Puerto Ricans gangs were created due to the harassment they were receiving.  This eventually created the Latin Kings on Spaulding Ave., the Maniac Latin Disciples around N. Rockwell, the Spanish Cobras along Campbell Ave., and the Insane Albany Orchestra and the Imperial Gangsters in the Logan Square area.

The Insane C Notes Nation had deep ties to the Chicago Mob. A lot of original members became apart of The Outfit later in their adult lives. C Notes actually acted like some sort of enforcement branch for the mob throughout their history, they were known to put in work for the outfit

ChiWest just north of them was a feeder into Eastern European organized crime as well. Look up Jack Farmer.

ChiWest, Insane C Notes, Insane Deuces, Insane Popes, Simon City Royals, Noble Knights, Gaylords, Satan Disciples, 12th Street Players, Stoned Freaks, Insane Racine Boys, Nike Boys, Insane 22 Boys, etc. So many white gangs were formed in Chicago, it was literally the birth place of the greaser gangs & modern day gangbangin’ as we know it. The real West Side Story basically. All of these white gangs have some real rich history when it comes to what being a gangster is for real…some are extinct, some are extremely lowkey, and some are still thriving…it all depends really…but white people in Chicago dont gangbang anymore like they used too..you got little pockets of it here and there but as a whole it aint what it used 2 be

I became a Latin King from Spaulding in Chicago when I was a teenager. Then moved to central Texas where I began a different gang while keeping ties w LK both in Chicago & San Marcos, Texas. I called us La Corona. Man, was I so dumb & naive. I thought I was the shit that didn’t stink. I’m lucky I never lost my freedom or my life. It’s so easy to not see past the environment we grow up in. We think we know it all and we incorrectly assign bravery or “being down” to jackassery bullshit. All we can do is learn from it if we survive it & try to pass our wisdom to those that seek it. Much love to all of you.

Most of the white organizations in Chicago got pushed out by the Latin organizations…but a lot of them are thriving in other parts of the country especially in the prison systems cuz white organizations usually thrive more in the prisons & jails in the USA. Almighty Simon City Royals Nation are huge in Mississippi, Louisiana, & Alabama. Almighty Gaylords are huge in Indiana, Kentucky, & Ohio.

Yeah, there really isn’t any white turf-based street gangs in the United States anymore. Eventually these white organizations become extinct or transforms into prison gangs. The ASCRN in Chicago is pretty much all Latinos & they still have some turf but in Mississippi all the Royals are white & they operate more as a prison gang than a street gang down there.

Yeah, I heard some of them Royals down in Mississippi be on some renegade / insane shit. They basically said fuck the Almighty & ChiTown…some of them got exposed to false literature but I heard ChiTown eventually cleaned house in that state yk what I mean

ChiWest graffiti is showing back up on Western between Chicago and Augusta. Thought they were long gone but maybe not?

It is probably old guys who still live in the neighborhood or their kids doing the graffiti. I see Gaylord graffiti around Kilbourn Park. As far as I know they have been inactive for a few decades, but they still sometime hang together and talk about the old days.

The Imperial gangsters are also in Des plains / rosemont IL . They are across oakton from the Latin kings . Behind the Allstate arena and steak and shake . Been there for a minute and the hood is know as Lil Mexico

I’ll work on adding more of them

Dnt do it trust me it’s barely any Gaylord sets.. they are not active !

there’s some gaylord sets nothing big like shootings but they still here

Only in some areas of the city they still got a presence but yeah they ain’t as active in Chicago as they used to be..I heard they basically one of the biggest white prison gangs in Indiana..I heard some white supremacist gang called “Saxon Knights” flipped to AGLN in that state

Anybody telling you Almighty Galords are inactive is a child. They are indeed active in several areas on the north side.

They damn sure ain’t at Montrose/Austin.

Almighty Gaylords in the 21st Century still have some turf in Chicago but they’re basically a prison gang in Southern Indiana & Kentucky. They’re more active in those 2 states than they are in Chicago nowadays but they still holding it down in some parts of the NorthSide

I think It would helpful to show which hoods run which buildings. Put the 4 buildings for roc nation/ 757 in blue and put the Otv/ kimo 12 buildings in green. ???? just trying to help ???????? keep im up the good work

East Side in Chicago is NOT any neighborhood east of State st. in fact, east of state st we have the Gold Coast and Streeterville which are exclusive areas East side is located on the Southeast corner of Chicago bordering Indiana.

Hell rell – No memory Hell rell – Out There

Latin Kings were not created on Spaulding. They were founded on Leavit and Schiller in the Wicker Park Neighborhood.

Laflin and Van Buren is the fatherland. Leavitt & Schiller was the original motherland but then moved to Spaulding

South side Latin Kings tell a different story.. that they were founded in Little Village in the late 1960s. Definitely not Wicker Park.

Add KBE TRAP CITY 147Th Buffalo Ave 460 Buffalo avenue calumet city

Hysterical that you claim that the hispanic gangs were formed as protection from the White gangs.I grew up on the North Side of Chicago. The truth is that the Third World immigration push by the Democrats and Ted Kennedy in 1965 and our open borders flooded Chicago with gangs and drugs and pushed out middle class Whites who were too busy working and going to school to get involved in gangs. Stop the lies.

So there were absolutely no white gangs, no greaser gangs, Gaylords, Simon City Royals, or any others?

Royals & Gaylords still have some turf on the NorthSide but nowadays they really get active in other states (Royals = Mississippi, Gaylords = Indiana)

So you never heard of the Hamburg Athletic Club?

This comment is completely clueless. Do some actual research.

Add DTG 1700 (Duct Tape Gang) they Run from Menard to Central and Bloomingdale To North Ave. And they ViceLords

That’s MK hood for sure

Live in Wicker Park… can you really still call anywhere in West Town a gang hood? pretty much all has been gentrified out. Calling Damen and North a major IIVL hood seems like a huge stretch when as far as I can tell nothing happens there and there are million dollar homes up and down the streets.

More info on “Crown Town” the chapters inside are 51 & Campbell, 51 & Homan, 52 & Talman, 53 & Albany, 55 & Lawndale, 55 & Washenaw and 56 & Sacremento

That never happened. Stop spreading false information.

MLDs have a hood on 53rd & Kostner “5-3”. It goes from 52nd to 55th from Kolmar to Keeler. It was opened by MLDs of 55th & Talman and some north side MLDs around 2010. Their main opps are the SDs from the Hollows

Where did this “Out East” thing come from??? Been living in Chicago over 30 years, Roseland, and the Manor. Nobody ever called that “the East Side” or would dare tell someone that? It’s pretty annoying, and confusing! By this logic, everything west of state, would be “Out West” It’s not. The East Side, that i know of,is a small neighborhood where most of the street names are in an alphabet letter, going towards the Horseshoe casino. Chicago has always been categorized by North, West, and South. So stick to the basics, and stop trying to make that a thing.I don’t want people telling me I’m from “Over East” cuz I’m not. SOUTH SIDE.

u sound goofy people been calling anything by the lake by 71st n jeffrey and so on over east forever

Naw, I used to be in the 3 Bs with my family. They most definitely made the distinction they were from over east.

I’ve been told housing projects south of Palatine Rd. south side of Pauwaukee airport has SGDz. Not sure set name. Played lots of basket ball there for past tournaments.

Relax those SGDz been there way before you decided to play ball on Saturday and Sundays

The Imperial Gangsters from Franklin Park IL. also known at “The Jungle” the claim the James park as their chapter, their stretches from Belmont to Grand Ave, Cullerton st. to Mannheim.

Stone Park LKs & The Jungle IG’s were main rivals

Add The Chicago Heights latin kings been there since the 1970’s I believe. They have 4 chapters,15th & Campbell (DA HEIGHTS), also E end Ave & Main Street (MAIN ST LK’s) 22nd and Wentworth & 24th Wentworth (THE HILL). The main st & Wentworth hood stretches from 17th to 26st from E End Ave to State st. All three chapters roam that area. DA HEIGHTS LK’s hood stretches from Lincoln Highway to 16th place from Ashland to Edgewood Ave.

You forgot the Harlem latin kings from summit il. 61st/62nd & Harlem also know as (HARLEM CITY) 2 different chapters. They’ve been there since the 1950’s. 62nd & Harlem was the 5th Latin King chapter established back in the day. Their neighborhood stretches from archer (55th) to 63rd st. Harlem to archer Blvd. You also have the GD Gánster Disciples (ARGO GD’s) in summit il. Their neighborhood stretched from 63 to 64, Harlem to Archer.

They’re Folks

Pulaski to St. Louis, 60th to 65th is Chapo City GTS. SWBs are only off 66th and Hamlin.

TWst isn’t a thing, they were abolished and edgewater is mostly high rises. Trust me, people can blast lil durk, king von and wear v.roy hats ☠️

The west side is pretty accurate but for West Humboldt park the Latin Kings are non existent. Their are no kings in the Kedvale Park area, that whole section to Kostner and Grand City is full of D’s. Their are a lot of maniacs, have never seen any Kings. The Maniacs there are in alliance with the Vice lords and Foes, has nothing to do with nations but money. The Vice lords there will go at it with kings if it comes to it. In the streets alone you can see it by how connected the drug market is there, in music terms you can see it alone with the collab between ElHitta and Elvythegod.

John Binder, a local mob historian and author of "The Chicago Outfit", conducts the popular There Goes the Neighbor Hood tour. Running from early spring to late fall each year, the tour showcases local gangster history through Oak Park and River Forest with visits to 15 houses that were once occupied by major mobsters. Binder sprinkles in facts about the criminal careers of the former owners, unique features of each home, and rare information about the family's time spent there. The tour lasts approximately two hours and travels by minibus with no walking required. The tour departs from (and returns to) the Oak Park Visitor Center.

REVIEWERS CALL OUR TOURS THE "BEST FOOD TOURS" IN CHICAGO!

Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable. She even told us about other places to see and eat in Chicago. I would recommend this tour for tourists and local residents as well. We’d do it again.

chicago hood tours

My boyfriend and I went on this tour together while I visited him in Chicago for the first time and enjoyed the food, history, and getting to walk around all over. Be sure to wear tennis shoes and be hungry because you will be full when your finished.

Had a great tour. The guide was great and the food was delicious. We really enjoyed the spots, the information and the group size. Britany was fabulous. She was super attentive and fun person to spend a few hours with here.

I went on both the Wicker Park and River North tours, and as a local Chicagoan, both tours introduced me to new foods/history/culture of Chicago, and also reminded me of why I love this city. Highly recommended for both locals and tourists! Better yet, locals bring your tourist friends and have a great afternoon experiencing Chicago in a tasty and fun way!

This was a great tour! The food was delicious and diverse. Our guide, Sarah, was very informative and friendly. I would highly recommend this tour if you want to explore a neighborhood of Chicago (Wicker Park) you’ve probably never been to before.

This was a great way to explore a new city! Mike was a fantastic tour guide and was very knowledgeable about the area. The sidewalk food tour combined two of my favorite activities: walking and eating. So fun.

We took the River North tour with Jake. This was such a great way to see the city and sample a variety of food. I liked that the sit down restaurants alternated with the stand and eat places with a walk in between. I loved the pizzap and I always appreciate an opportunity to sample Rick Bayless' food!

River North tour was a good time. A great way to have a sampling of the area, it's history and food. Tour guide was informative and interactive. Give it a try.

What a fun way to explore the city. We loved the history and the taste of Wicker Park. Chicagoans take advantage of a tourist POV and discover local spots that give Chicago its rich diversity.

EXPLORE TWO OF CHICAGO'S MOST DIVERSE NEIGHBORHOODS

We thought we were just doing a food tour but it was so much more! Phyllis was fantastic in sharing the history and cultural aspects of the different neighborhoods as well as the stories of the families that owned the different restaurants. It was a fabulous deep dive into the Chicago known as the city of neighborhoods! Highly recommend this tour for locals as well!

...This tour gives you tastes of ethnic foods that are more Chicago than the tourist spots. Phyllis is knowlegeable about the neighborhood and works with food allergies or preferences so that you will have a great experience. We took our 15 y.o. grandson who loved it as much as we did.

Phyllis was our enthusiastic tour guide and led us on an incredibly informative tour along Argyle (uptown) and Andersonville. Altogether it was maybe a couple of miles (very easy walk) but so much history, culture and food (!) along the way. Thoughtful and organized; I would absolutely recommend this tour.

Such an amazing food tour!! Phyllis is very knowledgable about both food and the Uptown neighborhood...Portions were big, and I was so full by the end. I'm a vegetarian and all of the veggie options were very tasty. I will definitely be going back to these restaurants. Totally worth it!

The tour is HIGHLY recommended, both for the delicious nibbles across multiple cute locales and for the highly valuable information relayed by it's wonderful host, Phyllis. My only wish is that every neighborhood had a Phyllis to guide me around and feed my hungers for food and knowledge and discovery! Thanks Phyllis!

Having spent the past 16 years living in and around the Uptown/Andersonville area, I thought I had a handle on the diverse cuisine and culture of the neighborhood; it turns out, I didn't know the half of it...Its an absolutely wonderful way for an adventurous traveler to spend an afternoon off the beaten trail in Chicago, but equally fascinating for a local like myself!

Our experience with Phyllis and the Chicago Foodways tour could not have been better. We spent the afternoon sampling Vietnamese and Swedish delights and learning about the history of the Argyle and Andersonville neighborhoods. Can't wait to return to Chicago and take Phyllis' other tour!

Well researched, thoughtful food choices. The Saigon to Stockholm tour was an exceptional 2 1/2 hour excursion through two of the cites more obscure communities. Phyliss’s engaging story telling and exceptional food knowledge crafted a memorable experience.

Absolutely amazing food tour of really unique and historic areas of Chicago! Fantastic history and context for the equally delicious food we had. Would highly recommend this tour, especially if you're wanting a unique perspective on real Chicago life!

Critic’s Pick

Onstage in Chicago, Zach Bryan Howled, and the Crowd Found Its Voice

The singer and songwriter has become one of pop’s least expected new stars. On opening night of his arena tour, he showcased the bond with his fans that brought him there.

A man in a blue shirt with the sleeves rolled up plays an acoustic guitar and steps away from a microphone onstage to let out a yell.

By Jon Caramanica

Reporting from Chicago

The first two songs Zach Bryan played at the United Center on Tuesday night were from the more muscular end of his catalog. They landed hard and quick — Bryan was singing with a rugged howl, guitars were churning, the fiddle poked through the top like a squeal. This was opening night of The Quittin Time Tour, and the first of three sold-out shows here, and he was wasting no time pumping the audience into a frenzy.

Then he needed them to breathe — maybe he needed to breathe — and so next came “God Speed,” one of the most delicate and precise entries in Bryan’s catalog. It’s a song about surrender and, most importantly, hope, that rests entirely on his strummed acoustic guitar and determined, dusty voice. Bryan pulled his vocals back to let the words sink in, but somehow the crowd got louder and more committed, turning the song into a hymn. In a room of over 20,000 people, everyone was singing, yet somehow it was eerily quiet — the loudest hush imaginable.

Bryan, 27, is a singer whose hollers feel like hugs and whose laments land with a roar. For the past few years, his country-rock-adjacent rumbles have been inspiring a level of fevered devotion that has made him one of music’s most popular and least expected new stars. “Zach Bryan,” his second major-label album, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard album chart last year, and its lead single, “I Remember Everything,” a duet with Kacey Musgraves, reached the top of the Hot 100. Half a year later, the song remains in the Top 10.

A Bryan live show is rooted in his sandpapered voice, his modest affect and his band’s surprisingly jubilant musical arrangements. But just as crucial is the crowd shout-along. It is something slightly different than a regular singalong; the harmony it suggests veers past musical to the emotional.

A couple of years ago, Bryan’s audience was packed with young men who sang his scraped-up songs unselfconsciously back to him. It all had the eau de Springsteen — deploying the magic of seeing a tough, resilient man confess to something much more wounded and ambiguous. But while that’s still part of the appeal, his crowd has expanded. There are more women now, and loads of teenagers, too, an indication of Bryan’s reach even if he has yet to become a traditional radio presence, and even if his allegiance to country music — which he toys with, and which the crowd’s outfits suggested an affinity for — is fickle.

This show, like his albums, was uproarious but not unfocused: a two-hour tour of songs about stubbornness and mistake-making, flecked with flashes of tenderness that gleam so brightly because everything around them is scuffed beyond repair.

The brawnier songs were effective, including “Open the Gate,” “Heading South” and “Nine Ball,” during which the track’s video, starring Matthew McConaughey, played on screens near the ceiling. Bryan’s band knows how to extract antic energy from just a handful of small parts, particularly Read Connolly on lap steel and banjo, J.R. Carroll on keyboard and Lucas Ruge-Jones on fiddle and sometimes trumpet.

But Bryan is at heart a sentimentalist. He writes about the present with the patina of retelling the past, a gesture that underscores how little distance there is between something happening right now and the memory you’re left holding onto. His most effective gambit is bringing thousands of people into the dimly lit corners of his songs.

“’68 Fastback” was heart-rending: “To you I’m just salvage/I ain’t ran right in years/So drive me then gut me.” And Bryan was particularly vivid when invoking the unsteady concept of home, whether on the bracing “Oklahoma Smokeshow,” or “Tishomingo,” which opened with the disarming sigh, “I don’t think that the city moves slow enough for me.”

“Highway Boys,” which on the surface is a toast to the compatriots that make life on the road manageable, actually turned on a more gentle commandment: “If you need me, call/If you’re in love, fall.” And it’s hard to imagine a contemporary American songbook without “God Speed,” from his self-released 2019 album “DeAnn,” which marked Bryan as a singer and writer of uncommon vigor.

Even Bryan’s biggest hits were effectively small ruminations: an aching “Something in the Orange,” and “I Remember Everything,” on which Bryan was joined by Musgraves, a pair of interior singers reckoning with the certainty of a song loved by millions.

When Musgraves left the stage, Bryan quipped, “You kidding me?” This, too, is part of Bryan’s arsenal — the modesty. Throughout the show, he was constantly acknowledging his luck, and the purported (and untrue) rustiness of him and the band: “I’m so sorry if you were having a good evening and we ruined it.”

He played on a huge cross-shaped stage at the center of the arena floor — a pumped-up version of playing in the round — and spent much of his time dutifully marching from promontory to promontory to make sure each side of the room got its face time. And he played to the local crowd with a T-shirt celebrating the Chicago Bulls’ 1995-96 season in which they went 72-10, then the best regular-season record of all time.

After a show full of grand-scale renderings of small-bore apprehensions, he closed with “Quittin’ Time,” with a rambunctious banjo and the fist-pumping exhortation, “I can’t wait to head on home, so I can take my gal to dance.” And then, after a slightly awkward break, Bryan and the band returned to the stage for a 10-minute single-song encore of “Revival,” an enthusiastic celebration of misbehavior. It was boisterous and free, chatty and ecstatic; T-shirt cannons fired tight packages into the crowd.

It was sort of a repayment and a release for a night of close attention and assistance. When Bryan yelped, the crowd yelped. When he whispered, they whispered, too. Sometimes, it was unclear where the line between observation and participation really was. Near the end of “Something in the Orange,” Bryan said, “I trust you guys,” and walked away from the microphone.

The Quittin Time Tour continues in Chicago on Wednesday and Thursday, and runs through Dec. 19 in Brooklyn; zachbryan.com/tour .

Explore the World of Country Music

Zach Bryan’s country-rock-adjacent rumbles have made him one of music’s most popular new stars . On the first night of his arena tour, he showcased his bond with the fans that brought him there.

A fan asked his Oklahoma radio station to play a new Beyoncé song. The request was rejected, reigniting a debate about the exclusion of Black musicians from country music .

Jelly Roll, one of 2023’s surprise success stories in the music industry, has become known as much for emotional openness as for hit songs .

DBT is thrilled to announce The Southern Rock Opera Revisited 2024 Tour. It’s been 23 years since the release of the album that drastically changed our lives and 22 years since we performed it (more or less) straight through in near entirety. We’ll be hitting the road, Three Guitars blazing, and telling y’all a story. It’s an album we spent years writing and learning to play and then recording (in the upstairs of a uniform shop in downtown Birmingham AL). It was initially released on 9/11/2001 (and later reissued by Lost Highway in the summer of 2002).

A lot has happened in the decades since it came out, both to the band and to the world we live in. We feel that the record, while somewhat timeless, also has a current timeliness to it considering the social and political issues of today. Instead of performing it as if it’s still 2000AD, we want to make it our own, reflecting who we all are now in 2024. It’s going to be intense, but also a hell of a lot of fun and this time we’re offering a very special  Southern Rock Opera Revisited VIP Experience  that includes a soundcheck party and some special SRO Revisited limited edition items.    VIP tickets are on sale starting today!

We’ll be playing songs from the original release, plus a small handful of songs that pertain to its themes and points of view, plus a short encore set that will be different each night.  It’ll be a different and very special show, and very likely the last time we’ll ever do it so DON’T MISS IT! DBT-Southern Rock Opera Revisited 2024 Tour.

“It ain’t about the past.”

See you at the Rock Show!

On September 11, 2001, Drive-By Truckers self-released Southern Rock Opera on their own tiny Soul Dump label, pressing 5000 copies of their third studio album with a tiny budget they raised by crowdsourcing (as it’s come to be known), raising the money online from fans turned investors. They ended up selling 10,000 copies independently without any sort of distribution, mostly sold at shows during the massive tour that they booked themselves. A tour that began with 75 shows in 90 days and that stretched well into the following year.

The success of the Southern Rock Opera Tour and the album that inspired it led to Drive-By Truckers getting proper management and being picked up by High Road Touring, who have been their agents ever since. The band signed their very first record deal with Lost Highway Records, who reissued the album in the summer of 2002 as the tour stretched to the end of the year. A trajectory that saw the band moving from small dive bars and sleeping on floors, to playing bigger rooms and theaters, and touring on a bus.

Southern Rock Opera became the first of a string of albums that has seen Drive-By Truckers morph and continue to thrive for nearly a quarter of a century. The critically acclaimed band is well known for its high energy and cathartic shows, as well as for a prolific string of albums that combine astute politics, Southern storytelling, and an eclectic approach to rock ‘n’ roll that has been played at thousands of shows on three continents.

Always restless and never a band keen on repeating itself, people have asked Drive-By Truckers for years about the possibility of another Southern Rock Opera Tour to no avail. DBT co-founder Mike Cooley, never one to mince words, has long responded that it should only be done when it could be performed “on ice!” Meanwhile, Southern Rock Opera has continued to sell, eventually recouping its original record deal, and often appearing on lists of the best albums of the 2000s.

Although the band still holds onto the dream of Southern Rock Opera On Ice , it’s no coincidence that 2024 is also an election year. Another year full of some of the same contentious issues that inspired much of the original album’s content. The Southern Rock Opera Revisited 2024 Tour will see Drive-By Truckers celebrating their milestone album, not as a relic of another time and place, but as a continued conversation about where we came from, and where we are headed in this crazy time in history that we currently reside in. As Drive-By Truckers say in the album’s pivotal “The Southern Thing” – “ It ain’t about the past .”

Olivia Rodrigo is having a moment. Tuesday at the first of a sold-out two-night stand at United Center, the singer-songwriter ensured everyone in the audience shared in it.

Touring in support of her “Guts” album, the 21-year-old vocalist brought to light concerns, sentiments and circumstances that largely impact teenage girls and women of all ages. Her inspired and inspiring performance was a combination high-energy concert, scream-therapy session, communal catharsis and stay-up-til-dawn slumber party. It displayed Rodrigo’s maturation from adolescent to young adult — as well as her interest in those who look to her as a role model and peer.

Rodrigo’s ability to relate to the predominantly female crowd transcended the surface connections forged at shows by most superstars. Her repeated calls for fans to yell, sing and enjoy themselves represented a more courageous and sometimes dangerous idea: the permission to be yourself. The sound of thousands of voices shouting every lyric back at her and the look of joy on many faces were indications Rodrigo got another key point across: her apparent normalcy.

For 95 minutes, she made evident her experiences don’t differ much from those of her listeners.

Having transitioned from acting roles on Disney’s “Bizaardvark” and “High School Musical: The Musical: Series” to international pop sensation, Rodrigo ranks alongside other young female artists — Billie Eilish, SZA, Dua Lipa, Phoebe Bridgers, Megan Thee Stallion, Karol G, Taylor Swift included — as proof that in the early 2020s, girls run the world. At least when it comes to record charts, ticket sales and outsized influence.

Two albums into her career, Rodrigo counts multiple No. 1 singles, a pair of No. 1 LPs, three Grammy Awards (and 13 nominations), seven Billboard Music Awards and a Billboard Woman of the Year nod among her feats. She’s also emerged as a conscientious voice. In addition to appearing with President Joe Biden to promote vaccinations, the California native has supported causes that aid homeless kids, hospitalized patients, war victims and individuals with epidermolysis bullosa.

Rodrigo’s activism extends to her own charity, Fund 4 Good, which strives to champion women’s rights. Her outspoken advocacy of reproductive health care and sex education recently landed her management in hot water with states that outlaw abortion.

But those opposed to Rodrigo’s stance won’t mute her messages. Though the megaphone the singer wielded to help broadcast the revenge fantasy “Get Him Back!” — complete with confetti and an unspoken announcement that the deluxe version of “Guts” with bonus tracks lands this Friday — doubled as clever theater, Rodrigo’s empowering statements resonated without supplemental help.

Backed by an all-female band, the singer did a little of everything while running through the majority of her catalog. Play a grand piano and reveal deep thoughts on a sullen ballad? “Drivers License.” Get filmed from below to suggest a violation of privacy before grabbing an electric guitar, banging out chords and jamming on her knees? “Obsessed.” Strip arrangements down to an acoustic guitar framework, casually sit on the stage and transform the arena setting into the kind of close gathering witnessed by besties at a sleepover? “Happier” and “Favorite Crime.”

In the context of modern arena tours, the production adhered to a similar simplicity. Save for a sequence where Rodrigo orbitted half of the venue atop the fold of a crescent moon as stars dangled from the ceiling, the fanciest aspects related to hydraulic platforms, concealed stairs and dry ice fog. The stage, extended with two runways, was framed by a high-definition video screen that transmitted live and pre-recorded content. Basic, albeit proven and effective.

The less to distract from Rodrigo, the better. She limited herself to four outfit changes (preference: crop tops and sparkly shorts or skirts). A dance squadron with mediocre choreographic skills accompanied Rodrigo on a handful of numbers, but the singer outshined everyone with her extroverted personality and animated movements.

Skipping, hopping, crawling, twisting, jogging in place, descending to floor level to slap hands: Rodrigo matched the carbonated fizz of her most upbeat materia. To emphasize certain lines in songs, she used gestures that often disappeared as fast as they arrived. Sticking a finger in her mouth; twirling her hair; rolling her eyes; outstretching her arms; circling her tongue around her lips; mock-saluting: Rodrigo understood how nuance can accent meaning — particularly when words surface at a rapid clip.

At times, they gushed akin to water pouring from a firehose. Rodrigo sang with a balance of hushed delicacy and emotive intensity, dividing time between dramatic ballads and freeing ragers. She eschewed perfection in favor of authenticity, and risked hitting bad notes rather than relying on backing tracks. Borrowing from new-wave, coffeehouse folk and, most prevalently, pop-punk and other hook-heavy styles popular in the ‘90s — an era that notably predates her existence — the singer’s music would’ve benefited from a more capable band but didn’t try to push boundaries. Her subject matter, however, ventured places few mainstream talents explore.

Frustration, desperation, bitterness, disloyalty, envy, self-doubt, angst: Rodrigo addressed issues tied to painful coming-of-age processes with devastating insight, unsparing vulnerability and the occasional well-suited profanity. She conveyed them via female perspectives that underlined the nagging insecurities, compromised decisions and hollowed-out feelings young girls face.

For all the merit of Rodrigo’s detail-rich songs about early heartaches (the accusatory slow-build of “Deja Vu”) and uncaring exes (the synthesized drift of “Traitor,” the acerbic bombast of “Good 4 U”), her embrace of broader topics demonstrated her evolution as a person and artist. Rodrigo acknowledged as much.

Before performing the soul-probing “Teenage Dream,” she said that approximately two years ago she saw “growing up [as] the scariest, worst thing in the world.” Now, she admitted, she feels she knows herself better. Her latest work reflected that heightened awareness and spoke to complex themes that went beyond age categorizations.

The emptiness, anger and dread that arise from being exploited like a cheap product amid the noir “Vampire.” The self-flagellation that happens when you know you’ve been had and the embarrassment that ensues when you examine your behavior, chronicled in the winking “Love Is Embarrassing.” The contradictory justifications associated with rationalizing a hook-up with a former lover, sent up through the bounce of the humorous “Bad Idea Right?” Rodrigo relayed the situations and moods with confidence and empathy, operating as if she read the minds of everyone in those positions.

She went even further on the falsetto-laden “Pretty Isn’t Pretty,” tackling body-image expectations and cultural pressures advanced by social media, pharma advertisements and fashion industry with lingering sadness and loathing. But Rodrigo refused to let herself, or her followers, fall under the thumb of anyone or anything.

Enter Rodrigo as the “All-American Bitch,” a sarcastic tear-down of the double standards, ludicrous assumptions and impossible demands placed on women for centuries. As the singer belted out the probable generational anthem, she paused for everyone to think of an irritant and encouraged them to vent their grievances with a collective scream.

The essence of Rodrigo’s enabling messages registered loud and clear: We are women, hear us roar.

“Bad Idea Right?” “Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl” “Vampire” “Traitor” “Drivers License” “Teenage Dream” “Pretty Isn’t Pretty” “Love Is Embarrassing” “Making the Bed” “Logical” “Enough for You” “Lacy” “Jealousy, Jealousy” “Can’t Catch Me Now” “Happier” “Favorite Crime” “Deja Vu” “The Grudge” “Brutal” “Obsessed” “All-American Bitch”

Encore “Good 4 U” “Get Him Back!”

“Everybody up out of your seats!” demanded pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo on stage on night one of two in Chicago. “I want you to jump. I want you to scream! We’re gonna have so much fun!”

Following up on the success of her multi-platinum 2021 debut album Sour , a tour which found her performing multiple night runs in large theaters, Rodrigo seems perfectly at home on a bigger stage, making the jump to arenas in support of her latest studio album Guts .

The “Guts” world tour hit the Windy City for two sold out nights at United Center, with fans lining up six hours before showtime to check out the Guts world tour bus, parked across from the arena along Madison Street on the venue’s north side.

Featuring a carefully curated interior set to resemble the bedroom of a teenage girl in the 1990s, the special pop-up is open to all fans, offering an inclusive opportunity for those unable to secure one of this spring’s hottest concert tickets to take part in the “Guts” experience via giveaways, photo ops and exclusive customized tour merchandise.

“Hello! Welcome to the ‘Guts’ world tour!” said opening act Chappell Roan, who took the stage on night one in Chicago promptly at 7:30 PM for an energetic 40 minute set.

In front of a three-piece backing band, Roan offered up cuts from her 2023 full-length debut The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess .

Opening up with “Femininomenon,” Roan turned to her drummer with a smile. “Can you play a song with a f–ing beat?” she asked rhetorically, setting the pace.

“After Midnight” boasted a funky bassline and a disco bounce, with phones soon lighting up the arena expanse during “Casual.”

“Thank you so much!” said Roan as her set drew to completion. “Get ready for Olivia Rodrigo!” screamed the singer following a ripping guitar solo as “Pink Pony Club” closed the set.

As she forges an identity as one of pop’s most interesting new acts, Rodrigo continues to evolve, developing a refreshing socially conscious approach to both her music and concerts.

Rodrigo made headlines last week after enabling the distribution of free condoms and contraception pills at a concert in nearby St. Louis, Missouri, a state where abortion was banned (unless deemed medically necessary) in 2022, ahead of a local push for even stronger regulations.

In Chicago, non-partisan non-profit HeadCount could be found in the arena lobby registering fans to vote.

Hitting the stage at 8:30 PM local time, Rodrigo thrilled the young crowd over the course of about one hour and 40 minutes on stage.

Backed by a pair of singers, two live guitarists, a drummer, bassist and keyboard player, Rodrigo ably fronted the tight eight-piece group, stomping back and to her right before charging toward her backing vocalists as the audience shouted right along to “bad idea right?” to open the show.

Jumping in place during a guitar solo, the earliest moments of Tuesday night’s performance resembled a full on rock show, with Rodrigo’s embrace of 90s alternative rock acts like Veruca Salt and The Breeders on full display.

The “ Guts” world tour is massive, scheduled to take Rodrigo across America into early April before heading abroad. Returning to the U.S. in July, the run will ultimately wrap up over the course of four mid-August evenings at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, with The Breeders slated to open.

Kneeling down in front of the drum kit Tuesday in Chicago, Rodrigo delivered the closing lines to “ballad of a homeschooled girl,” with the capacity crowd soon bathed in red lighting during “vampire.”

Acoustic guitar drove the early moments of “traitor,” giving way to Rodrigo’s breakout hit.

Sitting down at the piano, fog started to envelop Rodrigo at center stage as she put forth “drivers license” on stage at United Center. “Chicago! Sing it with me!” she requested. The Chicago crowd didn’t need to be asked a second time, promptly drowning out Rodrigo during the last verse.

“Gee… thanks for singing, Chicago! You’re making me blush,” mused Rodrigo, clearly moved by the audience’s impassioned response. “I wrote this song a few days before I turned 19 when growing up seemed like the scariest thing,” she explained, setting up “teenage dream,” as footage of her performing as a child rolled on the massive video screen flanking the stage. “I just turned 21,” she continued. “Now, I look forward to growing up so much!”

Following work on Disney shows like Bizaardvark and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series , Sour would go on to become one of the best selling albums of 2021, with Rodrigo — who was named one of Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2022 — setting and breaking streaming records on platforms like Spotify.

The massive “Guts” stage features a pair of long runways extending onto the arena floor and into the crowd from both the left and right sides of the main stage.

Eight backing dancers joined Rodrigo as she made her way down the left ramp during “pretty isn’t pretty,” with a crescent moon soon descending from the ceiling.

Sitting down securely in the moon prop, Rodrigo ensured every seat was a front row seat, moving toward the back and upper seating levels of the massive arena to wave at fans during tracks like “logical” and “enough for you.”

Ruminating on age old topics like the perils of navigating everyday teen life and finding love, Rodrigo proved to be a relatable star, energizing the sold out Chicago crowd.

“Chicago, you guys have got some pipes on you! Thank you for the warm welcome!” she said on stage at United Center.

Backing singers sparkled during a sparse take on “Can’t Catch me Now” (from the 2023 soundtrack to The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes ) and guitarist Daisy Spencer joined Rodrigo on the runway, with the pair sitting down together as they worked up “happier” as an acoustic duo.

Rodrigo picked up an electric guitar of her own for “obsessed” and paused for an all hands scream release prior to “all-american bitch,” soon breaking the news of this weekend’s release of the brand new Guts (spilled) edition of her latest album, a deluxe set featuring one brand new song and four others making their streaming debut.

Making her way from the stage, one final costume change would mark her return as “good 4 u” opened the encore.

Rodrigo would soon head down to the arena floor, dropping a megaphone to accept flowers as she greeted fans along the guardrail, blowing kisses to the assembled mass following “get him back!”

“Thank you, Chicago!” said Rodrigo in the show’s final moments. “I love you!”
