Roughly 1.5 million people visit Alaska on a cruise ship each season, according to the Cruise Line International Association Alaska . With more than 2,500 islands, mountainsides that tickle coastal waterways, a robust seasonal whale population (as well as the opportunity to spot moose, bears, and eagles, among other wildlife), and rich local culture in truly remote communities, some only accessible by water, it’s easy to see why so many travelers decide to sail in Alaska.

Each summer, scads of ships cruise Alaska’s coastal waterways, ranging from 12-person expedition-style sailings to mega-ships with passenger numbers into the thousands. Some stick to a manageable six-day itinerary within the popular and more easily accessible southeast region, while others head out on epic three-week sailings that cross multiple time zones. Some are as rugged as the 49th state, and others are pure opulence.

That’s all to say: There is probably an Alaska sailing that will match your travel style and budget. Here are eight of the best Alaska cruises to consider.

The best time to sail in Alaska—and see natural wonders like the Hubbard Glacier—is during the summer.

Alaska cruises can cost anywhere from $500 to $7,500 per person for a five-night sailing , but total costs will depend on the size of the ship, length of the trip, and other factors like whether onshore excursions and food and beverage are included in the base rate.

Generally speaking, the larger the ship, the cheaper the initial price tag. Mega-cruises (with cruise lines such Princess, Carnival, Celebrity, Disney, and Holland America) can go for as little as $100 a night (so roughly $600 per person for a six-night sailing). These resorts at sea, however, are often not all-inclusive, so be sure to check the fine print before putting your credit card down. Passengers frequently have to pay extra (and usually at a premium) for things like specialty dining, alcoholic beverages, and off-boat activities. It’s also worth factoring in on-board activities that cost extra like the spa and gift shop.

While small-scale operators have fewer dining and entertainment options on board, they do have an edge over larger ships: better chances of seeing wildlife. The larger ships are often relegated to port towns due to their sheer size, but smaller ships can more easily navigate and visit remote areas for hiking and kayaking excursions. Because they’re not hurrying to get to a port on time, their schedules are looser than those of large-scale ships, so if a pod of orcas is spotted, they can idle and watch them a little longer. Some of the smallest boats hold between 12 and 100 passengers, and many of them are all-inclusive (or at least inclusive of almost everything except alcohol). That more intimate experience commands a higher nightly rate—anywhere between $250 and $1,500 a night.

The best time to take an Alaskan cruise is generally between May and September. The Alaska cruise season, like the 49th state’s summer , is all too brief. The vast majority of sailings, particularly those in the Inside Passage (the island-filled coastal waterway in the southeast portion of the state), fall somewhere between Memorial Day and Labor Day. That being said, there are some shoulder season departures in April, May, September, and October.

The best time to visit also depends on your tolerance for the cold and for other travelers. Those shoulder-season trips are chilly (there’s a good chance you’ll see snow in some places and will need to bundle up more), but there are significantly fewer tourists to do battle with during shore excursions. However, the peak season (July and August) is divine. The sun hardly sets, the landscapes (save for the glaciers) are verdant, and the waterways are choked with playful whales getting their fill before winter.

One subtle example of this: At the top of daily dining menus are Tlingit phrases, like Xáanaa at x á gaawú áyá, meaning “it’s dinner time.” On a larger scale, the sailings are usually the only ones to visit and get a lesson on the Glacier Bay National Park Huna Tribal House (a traditional gathering place for Tlingit peoples). And because the ships are Alaska Native–owned, they’re able to go to remote, tribally owned corners of the Inside Passage that non-Indigenous companies simply aren’t allowed to, like Hobart Bay. If you’re looking to eschew the cruise ship behemoths for something more intimate, this is it—Alaska Dream Cruises’ Kruzof Explorer holds only 12 passengers. And because it’s so small, passengers can weigh in on the daily itinerary, perhaps opting to skip a hike in favor of more time photographing the face of a glacier or watching juvenile humpback whales learn to breach. The vessel was once a Bering Sea crab fishing boat, but it’s since been turned into a comfortable expedition vessel. Meals and activities (including going for high-speed Zodiac rides, kayaking, and paddleboarding) are included.

Hurtigruten Expeditions’ Inside Passage, Bears, and Aleutian Islands

• Cost: From $10,539 per person
• Days: 18 days
• Departure port: Vancouver, Canada
• End port: Nome, Alaska

For its sophomore season in Alaska, Hurtigruten Expeditions is not holding back. In 2023, the company is offering an 19-day sailing that starts in Vancouver, Canada, before working its way past the fjords, glacier-filled straits, and Indigenous villages of the Inside Passage. Unlike most other sailings that stay within the southeast, from here, the ship hangs a hard left and chugs along to Kodiak, an island community known for humongous brown bears and prolific crab fishing. Though it’s the second-largest island in the entire United States, it’s rare that cruise ships visit, mainly because it lacks the infrastructure for big ships.

Then it’s onward to the even less visited Aleutian Islands (a chain of islands, 14 of which are volcanic, in southwestern Alaska), where guests visit the uninhabited St. Paul and St. Matthew islands and Unga Village (a ghost town), before crossing (and recrossing) the International Dateline, sailing through the Bering Strait (between the Pacific and Arctic oceans, separating the Russian Far East from Alaska), and eventually docking in Nome, the far-flung city best known as the finishing point for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

Perhaps as interesting as the itinerary is the fact that the vessel, the 528-passenger MS Roald Amundsen , is battery hybrid-powered. In addition to being a model for cruising sustainably, the MS Roald Amundsen features an observation deck, science center, three Nordic-style restaurants, an infinity pool, and hot tubs. In other words, it’s definitely a place you wouldn’t mind spending 19 days.

Lindblad Expeditions’ Exploring Alaska’s Coastal Wilderness

• Days: 8 days
• Departure port: Juneau, Alaska
• End port: Sitka, Alaska (this same cruise is also offered in reverse)

Many of the sailings to Alaska center on the state’s major ports of call, like Juneau and Sitka. There’s nothing wrong with those itineraries, but they do tend to focus more on touristy downtowns and less on the great outdoors. While this Lindblad sailing does start and end in those cities (since most cruise passengers fly in, it’s most convenient to begin the sailing in a larger port not far from a major airport before heading to more remote destinations), the days in-between are adventure packed. Multiple times a day, guests are invited to disembark for a closer look at the true wilds of Alaska. That could entail going kayaking among bobbing bits of glacial ice in Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness, or going for a Zodiac ride in Frederick Sound to view whales up close. Another option includes trekking on lesser-known forest trails and getting an explainer on tide pools along smaller islands. While Lindblad has a general idea of where the vessel will stop each day, itineraries are not set in stone and the crew is not afraid to mix it up if it means having a locale to themselves or if there’s a stellar animal encounter to enjoy—this is an expedition ship, after all.

Because Lindblad Expeditions partners with National Geographic, there’s always a professional photographer on board to help travelers best capture their trip, as well as naturalists and expert guides to put what passengers see on the voyage into a more informative context. Both the National Geographic Quest and National Geographic Venture make the sailing. Norwegian Cruise Line’s Alaska: Hubbard Glacier, Skagway & Juneau

• Days: 9 days
• Departure port: Seattle, Washington
• End port: Seattle, Washington

If we were to pick one mega-ship operator to see Alaska on, it would be Norwegian Cruise Line . If your idea of a good time includes loads of onboard amenities (like over-the-top spas, nightly theater productions, go-kart tracks, and a water park), this is the sailing for you. It’s also one of the more family-friendly lines sailing in Alaska, considering there are kids clubs and programming specifically geared at youngsters.

Over the course of nine days, this sailing on the 1,976-passenger Norwegian Sun visits seven ports, including Sitka, Ice Strait Point, Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan, and Victoria (in British Columbia), and spends a full day puttering around the otherworldly Hubbard Glacier. All in all, the sailing is affordable, and travelers can customize the land part of their itineraries to fulfill their Alaska wish list (at an added cost), by opting for excursions that include kayaking to the face of a glacier; going on a flightseeing tour to see brown bears feast on salmon; meeting sled dogs; shopping for Indigenous handicrafts; marveling at totem poles; and visiting local breweries. On board, Wi-Fi, bar drinks, and specialty dining are free, but activities like the spa cost extra.

Ponant’s Alaska and Its Fur Traders

• Cost: From $13,230 per person
• Days: 15 days
• Departure port: Nome, Alaska
• End port: Vancouver, Canada (this cruise is also offered in reverse)

Another itinerary that focuses on lesser-visited ports is French line Ponant’s 15-day sailing starting in Nome, Alaska’s erstwhile gold-rush outpost on the sparsely populated western coast. As the boat pulls out of the harbor, guests are invited to bring their binoculars to the deck to check the landscape for reindeer (or, at the very least, to see the spooky, Cold War–era telecommunications towers on a nearby hill). After a day at sea, the first stop is St. Matthew Island, in the Bering Sea, almost equidistant from mainland Alaska and Russia. Next is St. Paul Island, where volcanoes and crater lakes are on the agenda, followed by Dutch Harbor, an Aleutian Islands community known for its prodigious number of bald eagles. Unga and Geographic Harbor wrap up the western islands. Next up will be Tsaa Fjord in the captivating (and appropriately named) Icy Bay for icebergs and glaciers. Then Sitka, a former Russian colony, and Kake, a little-visited Indigenous community known for having the tallest totem pole in the world. After a few more days in the Inside Passage, the sailing culminates in Vancouver. These sailings take place on the 264-passenger L’Austral , a high-end expedition-style ship that boasts a theater, gym, spa (with hammam), panoramic lounge, and pool.

Silversea’s Vancouver to Seward

• Cost: From $4,700 per person
• Days: 7 days
• End port: Seward, Alaska

What Silversea does well is creating an onboard experience that is luxurious and one-of-a-kind but doesn’t distract from the real star of the show: Alaska.

By day, the Silver Whisper visits buzzing, historical port towns including Ketchikan, Skagway, and Valdez, where guests are invited to disembark and participate in an activity of their choosing , like leisurely bopping around the downtown area or getting spine-tinglingly close to brown bears on a flightseeing tour. Back on the vessel, after a gourmet meal and drinks, evening entertainment is viewing the deep fjords, glaciers, and abundant whales that make Alaska so magical. One day might involve kayaking in Patterson Bay followed by a brisk snorkeling session. Another could see guests hiking to a glacial lake or going for a skiff tour among icebergs. Visits to bustling port towns like Juneau and Ketchikan are balanced with days spent entirely in the wilderness of Endicott Arm and Misty fjords.

First, it’s important to understand that the costs of an Alaska cruise can vary widely depending on several factors, like your cabin category . Not to mention, there will be associated costs not tied directly to the cruise fare.

Plus, how far in advance you book the trip and the time of year you cruise can also affect the Alaska cruise price. So, you could easily spend anywhere from $2,000 a person to several times that amount depending on your choices.

When putting together your budget, be sure to know all of the associated costs of an Alaska Cruise. The most important items to budget for include:

• Cruise fare (plus taxes and fees): This is largely impacted by the itinerary, cruise line, time of year, and the type of cabin.
• Airfare/Transportation: Most cruisers will need to fly to the Pacific Northwest to board an Alaska cruise. Even if you are local to a departure port, you will still incur expenses traveling to and from the port, parking, etc.

How Much Are Cruise Fares on an Alaska Cruise?

When it comes to choosing the right cruise ship for your Alaska cruise , cost will vary by cruise line. Currently, we have seen a trend of cruise prices increasing across the board in 2023, when compared to previous years.

Mainstream cruise lines, like Carnival Cruise Line , offer Alaska cruises in 2023 starting as low as $890 a person (double occupancy) for a seven night roundtrip cruise out of Seattle. Still, on that same ship, Carnival Luminosa, the voyage jumps up to $3,000 a person for a suite.

Competitor cruise line Royal Caribbean is advertising cruise prices for the 2023 Alaska cruise season starting as low as $770 a person (double occupancy) for a similar itinerary. Yet, a suite on the ship will cost just under $2,000 a person for the same week.

Premium cruise line Celebrity Cruises’ least expensive roundtrip Alaska cruise from Seattle starts at $807 a person (double occupancy). A suite in the ship’s exclusive Retreat is going for over $4,000 a person. Although, this fare includes many upgrades, like a drink package, exclusive restaurant access, WiFi, and gratuities.

Although, the family-focused Disney Cruise Line is one of the most expensive Alaska cruises . A roundtrip cruise from Vancouver starts at $1,050 per person for a family of 4 (or $1283 per person at double occupancy). If the same family of 4 wants to sail in a concierge level cabin, the total cost is $5875 per person (or $8950 per person at double occupancy).

So, as you can see, Alaska cruise prices do vary based on the cruise line and even by cabin category on the same ship.

Keep in mind the prices above are just to give you a sense of the relative pricing. Prices are subject to change.

Comparing Alaska Cruise Costs by Cabin Category

Regardless of cruise line, most ships offer similar types of staterooms or cabins. Typical cabin categories include Inside, Outside, Balcony (Verandah), and Mini-Suites/Suites.

So, it might be better to begin your budget around the type of cabin.

Some cruisers do not care about accommodations and want to book the least expensive room. Others will want a balcony cabin to admire the views.

Similarly, some might want the upgrades of a suite. Once you know the ballpark for these room categories, you can begin investigating cruise lines.

Based on our research, Alaska cruise fares for 2023 (inclusive of taxes and fees) have the following ranges.

• Inside Cabins – $700-$1200 a person
• Ocean Views – $800-$2000 a person
• Balconies – $1100-$2800 a person
• Mini Suites/Suites – $1500-$3500+ a person

These are approximate values on reviewing several cruise lines and ships for 7-night roundtrip cruises from Seattle at double occupancy. Of course, you might find rates cheaper (or more expensive) depending on the factors above.

Many cruise lines do discount the second and third person in the room. This discount is usually around 50% off the cruise fare of the first and second passenger. Note, they will be paying full prices for taxes and fees, which are usually $200 to $400 per person.

Thus, the per person fare will be different when averaged across all of the passengers in a stateroom.

For instance, an inside cabin on a roundtrip cruise on Princess Cruises’ Royal Princess out of Seattle, WA leaving on April 30th starts at about $720 a person at double occupancy. For a family of 4, the cabin is $2484 for a total of $621 a person.

A standard balcony cabin on the same sailing is currently $1,017 a person at double occupancy. So, an increase of 30% from the inside room rate. A family of four in the same balcony cabin would be paying over $3,600 for the cabin, so an average of $900 a person.

Of course, you may stumble upon a deal or promotion, like “kids sail free” or free perks with certain bookings making one cruise line a better option.

Alaska Cruise Costs by Time of Year

By and large, the cheapest times of year to go on an Alaska cruise are the shoulder seasons. This is the beginning and the end of the cruise season. Thus, sailings during late April/May and September/early October usually have the lowest Alaska cruise prices.

The most expensive time to cruise to Alaska is the middle of the season, usually July. This is the peak time of year as there is the warmest weather and coincides with summer vacation.

For instance, if you wanted to go on the same Princess cruise above in July, a balcony cabin for two people is just over $2,000 a person. Likewise, for a family of four, the total for a balcony cabin would be $6,392 (or $1,598 per person).

So, if you have your heart set on sailing during the middle of the summer, make sure to budget accordingly.

Does an Alaska Cruise Cost More for Certain Itineraries?

When going on an Alaska cruise, travelers have the option to sail either one-way or roundtrip itineraries.

One-way cruises start in one port, usually Vancouver, and end in another destination (like Whittier, Alaska). The two most common departure ports for roundtrip cruises are Seattle, WA and Vancouver, BC.

Comparing fares, one-way trips generally have lower starting fares than roundtrip itineraries. But, there is a good chance that you will pay more for flights on one-way cruises.

For roundtrip cruises, comparing seven-day itineraries from both Seattle and Vancouver, we do not find a discernible pattern.

Essentially, the prices are very close, and vary from week to week and from cruise line to cruise line. Thus, there is no benefit to picking one departure point over the other when it comes to Alaska cruise prices.

Ultimately, when deciding on an Alaska cruise itinerary, it really comes down to picking the option with the ports you want to visit.

How Much are Shore Excursions on an Alaska Cruise?

If all of these Alaska cruise costs are making you feel a little stressed out, then the pricing of Alaska shore excursions might just put you over the edge.

On our Alaska cruises, we have done a mix of land-based walking tours, as well as helicopter rides and float plane adventures. Not to mention glacier viewing, bear watching, zip lines, whale watching, and even visiting a bald eagle preserve.

Sure, there are plenty of reasonably priced tours that give you the authentic Alaskan experience, or you can even explore some of the small Alaskan towns on your own for free.

For instance, you can book a city tour with a stop at Mendenhall Glacier for around $70 a person. But, if you want to upgrade to include a full day of sightseeing, whale watching, and a salmon bake, that will cost over $200 a person.

For the ultimate experience, you can take one of the helicopter tours to see the nearby icefields in Juneau. These start at around $450 a person. If you want to combine a helicopter tour with a dog sledding adventure, that will easily be over $600 a person.

The most popular shore excursion in Alaska is the White Pass Summit railroad in Skagway. Alone, this tour is around $140 per person for the roundtrip ride. There are also several combo tours that cost over $200. Still, you can take a walking tour of Skagway or a bus tour for between $70 and $100 per person.

During our trips, we have averaged around $150 to $200 per person, per port for our shore excursion costs. So, with 4 to 5 ports of call, cruisers can easily spend upwards of $500 to over $1,000 on excursions.

Budgeting for Airfare for an Alaska Cruise

This is obvious, but depending on where you live and your departure port, you will need to calculate in the cost of flights.

If you are taking a one-way cruise either leaving or ending in Seward, Alaska, you will need to fly to Anchorage. Let’s just say that it’s not cheap or convenient. Not to mention, the increasing costs to fly in 2023 .

Even if you are cruising round-trip from Seattle, WA or Vancouver, BC, flights are not as abundant as popular cruise ports in Florida. 

A good rule of thumb is to budget between $500 to $1000 per person for airfare for an Alaska cruise.

Although, at peak times, you could spend more than that to get to more remote departure points.

Don’t forget to factor in luggage fees and other related costs, like airport parking, and transport to and from the cruise port.

Given the time travel, many cruisers will want to consider spending at least one pre-cruise day at a hotel, and possibly even a post cruise day. For popular departure ports like Seattle, WA or Vancouver, BC, even a modest hotel during Alaska cruise season can go for $200 to $300 a night.

Hotels with more amenities, better locations, or premium brands can run upwards of $500 a night.

What are Additional Costs for an Alaska Cruise?

Except for luxury cruise lines, your fare will not include onboard gratuities . These typically run $13-$18 a person, per day, depending on your cabin category.

Also referred to as “service charges”, these additional daily costs go to your room attendant, dining staff, and other crew members who work hard to make your cruise a special vacation.

Many cruise lines now give you the option to pre-pay these charges before cruising so you can budget accordingly. If you do not get that option or chose not to pre-pay, expect $100 or so per person in general gratuities to be added to your bill at the end of the cruise.

Alcoholic Beverages

Unless you are sailing on a luxury cruise line, odds are your cruise fare does not include alcoholic beverages. Of course, you can pay a la carte. Most cruise lines price beer around $7, cocktails between $9 and $15, and a variety of wines around $9 to $15 a glass.

Or, you could opt for a drink package. Often, drink packages run between $75-$125 a day, per person, depending on the drink package and cruise line.

Each cruise line has slightly different packages and inclusions. Still, if you do like to enjoy a few cocktails while on vacation, investigating these packages could save you money in the long term.

Now, some cruise lines offer package deals that include drink packages for certain room categories. So, upgrading your room could pay for itself if you get one of these free perks.

Specialty Dining

On most ships, there are plenty of complimentary dining venues and food offerings. However, if you do want to try out some of the specialty restaurants, you could easily spend a few hundred dollars more on dining.

Many cruise lines now also offer dining packages to help reduce the costs of specialty dining. Most lines will let you buy a drink package and/or a dining package during the first few days of your sailing, so you don’t have to make that decision before boarding.

If you want to stay in touch while onboard, you will need to purchase the cruise line’s WiFi. The additional costs for internet tends to run between $15 to $25 per day, per device. Prices vary based on internet speed and number of devices.

Although, when cruising in Alaska you should check with your mobile provider. If you have coverage when docked at the ports of call, you might not need to purchase internet for the few sea days.

Souvenirs or Onboard Purchases

Like any vacation, you could rack up additional costs for things like souvenirs, meals and snacks ashore, or any other general shopping or gaming while onboard. How much to allocate for these additional purchases varies for all travel parties.

We collect ornaments and t-shirts from the destinations we visit. So, the wife and I always budget around $100-$200 for these purchases.

Alaska Cruise Tours

Sometimes, travelers to Alaska extend the entire trip with a Cruisetour. A cruisetour adds extra days to your cruise, on either the front or the back end, with a portion of your trip occurring on land. These often include scenic rail tours with overnights in nearby lodges and hotels.

These cruisetours can add several hundreds of dollars per person to the cruise fare. The only good thing is that all of your tours and transfers during the land portion will be included and arranged for you.

For instance, Princess Cruises offers a 10-day Alaska cruise tour that includes 3 days on land with a 7-day cruise. These depart from Vancouver, with one way travel Northbound to Whittier, then a 3-day land rail to Denali National Park. Or vice versa.

Comparing a few dates for the Alaska Cruisetour, the per person costs for a couple is about $1300, close to double the cost of the cheapest roundtrip cruise.

Complete Breakdown of Alaska Cruise Costs

To recap, Alaska cruise costs vary greatly depending on the cruise line you choose, the cabin type you pick, the time of year you sail, and the onboard purchases and upgrades you opt for during your cruise.

However, below are some general pricing guidelines for the principal costs of an Alaska cruise.

So, we think it is reasonable to budget anywhere between $2,000 to upwards of $5,000 a person for an Alaska cruise. Thus, it is not too crazy to think that an Alaska cruise could cost a family of 4 close to $10,000 on the cheap end, once all costs are considered.

This is especially true if you are traveling from far away to get to the departure point. Or, if you opt for an upgraded shore excursion or two while traveling.

But, cruising to Alaska is well worth the costs! It is truly an unforgettable trip.

Love the break down and appreciate you being “realistic” (when sometimes others are focused on how cheaply you can do something (i.e., not necessarily realistic))…. Anyway ….. we are booked for August on Norwegian + 7 days on land (on our own, not a cruise tour). I cannot find anywhere that I am willing to cut that is going to get this price under $15k – – – AND we used frequent flyer miles to get us to Vancouver. I will report back after our trip on how much the actual cost ended up, but we are planning on around $17k. I realize people say once you go to Alaska you will want to return – – but on the outside chance that isn’t the case, I’m not going to not do an excursion so I can save $500 on a once-in-a-lifetime trip! I would be willing to share my budget “spreadsheet” if you thought you could show us ways to save! haha! I’m not anxious to overspend, but I also do not want to miss anything!

We would like too take our 50th annv. trip in 2021 .we got married very young my wifes mother and father had passed lets say and she was only 16 yrs old I was only 18 .Buy the time we got married she was 17 and me 19. we got married and took care of younger brother and sister because social services were going too split family up , the right thing too do was too marry her and step up to keep family together , and 48 yrs later still together. This period, which extends from January to March, refers to the "tidal wave" of lower pricing across the cruising industry during this time. Some cruise lines even kick off their sales in December, so it's advisable to begin your search for discounted pricing early.

Below, we've included some of the best Alaska cruise deals available right now for sailings in 2024 and 2025. All quoted prices are per person for double occupancy and were accurate at the time of writing. Keep in mind: Each itinerary may be available on multiple dates; we've listed the date with the lowest starting price to get you the best value.

Holland America Line

Holland America's "Time of Your Life" wave season deal features up to 40% off bookings for select sailings from summer 2024 through spring 2025; the sale ends at the end of February. You can also add the premium "Have It All" bundle. This added perk features a signature drink package , specialty dining, shore excursions and Wi-Fi access. The exact pricing and benefits of the package depend on the length of the cruise. The wave season pricing also features a complimentary stateroom upgrade, reduced deposits, and free or discounted fares for kids.

7-Day Glacier Discovery Southbound

Holland America's seven-day voyage aboard Noordam includes an afternoon cruising in Hubbard Glacier and a full day of sailing through picturesque Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve. The ship also calls on the ports of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, with one additional day of scenic cruising on the Inside Passage, before disembarking in Vancouver. Plan to stay an extra day in Vancouver to explore on your own, or opt for a hop-on, hop-off sightseeing tour with Holland America (complete with luggage service and an airport transfer) before taking a flight home later that evening.

7-Day Alaska Inside Passage

This round-trip sailing on Zaandam from Vancouver highlights the Inside Passage with a day of scenic cruising, plus a limited stop in Tracy Arm Inlet for excursions, before reaching the coastal towns of Juneau and Skagway. Then, you'll enjoy another day of scenic cruising in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve, followed by a stop in Ketchikan and cruising the Inside Passage before disembarking in Vancouver .

The Tracy Arm fjord features glacier-covered mountains and the largest intact coastal temperate rainforest in the country. It is also home to abundant wildlife, including whales, harbor seals, bald eagles, bears and mountain goats. Book the Tracy Arm Fjord & Glacier Explorer excursion to see the majestic beauty of the Tracy Arm wilderness and the twin Sawyer Glaciers up close. You might even see and hear ice calving into the pristine waters. You'll cruise through Stephens Passage on your way back to meet the ship in Juneau.

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises' wave season deals feature up to 40% off cruise prices, complimentary room upgrades, $100 deposits, and free fares for third and fourth guests in the same stateroom or suite. The advertised fares on the Princess Cruises website are for the line's MedallionClass experience, which includes dining at the complimentary onboard restaurants, entertainment on the ship, fitness facilities, and the youth and teen clubs. You can add optional upgrades, such as a beverage package, specialty dining, shore excursions and Wi-Fi access, either individually or with a Princess Plus or Princess Premier package.

7-Day Voyage of the Glaciers with Glacier Bay (Northbound)

Princess' seven-day itinerary aboard Grand Princess features the lowest available fare for the line's 2024 Alaska season. The itinerary starts with a relaxing sea day, followed by stops in three ports of call in Alaska: Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway. You'll also have two days of scenic cruising in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and College Fjord before disembarking in Whittier, near Anchorage .

The southbound voyage (which is the reverse itinerary) on Grand Princess departs May 15, 2024, from Anchorage and also starts at $398 per person. Or, you can sail that southbound itinerary on Sapphire Princess on May 18, 2024, for the same price.

In 2025, you can book this itinerary on Caribbean Princess for as low as $467 per person, embarking on May 10, 2025.

7-Day Inside Passage (Roundtrip Vancouver)

This shoulder season sailing in September is available on Grand Princess. The round-trip voyage from Vancouver features two days at sea; one day of scenic cruising in Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier; and stops in the coastal towns of Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan. While on the ship, spend warmer days outdoors relaxing at The Sanctuary, an adults-only venue. You can also experience one of the line's Discovery at SEA enrichment programs on board, or book one of the affiliated excursions ashore.

This Grand Princess itinerary is also available on May 27, 2025, for as low as $547 per person.

7-Day Alaska: Hubbard Glacier & Skagway

Norwegian's sailing from Seward to Vancouver on Norwegian Jewel features two days cruising through Hubbard Glacier, where you'll be able to book the Hubbard Glacier & Wilderness Explorer excursion for an up-close look at North America's largest tidewater glacier. Afterward, the ship calls on Icy Strait Point, Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan (Ward Cove).

In Ketchikan, reserve a spot for the Alaskan Cultural & Lumberjack Show Experience, which includes an entertaining show, a chance to learn about Alaska Native culture, and a tasting of local food and wines. Alaska also offers some of the best fishing conditions in North America, so anglers may want to consider booking a private excursion to go fishing for halibut or salmon. In 2025, the seven-day Hubbard Glacier & Skagway itinerary will sail from Vancouver to Whittier. The lowest fare for this cruise starts at $529 per person aboard the Norwegian Jade on May 5, 2025.

7-Day Alaska: Glacier Bay, Skagway & Juneau

This sailing on Norwegian Jewel departs from Vancouver and includes three sea days cruising the Inside Passage, Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and Hubbard Glacier. The itinerary also calls on the ports of Ketchikan (Ward Cove), Juneau and Skagway.

The 13-mile-long Mendenhall Glacier is one of the top attractions in Juneau, and the line offers a variety of excursions to view the impressive ice sheet. For a bucket list adventure, splurge on the helicopter and dog-sledding excursion to Mendenhall Glacier from Skagway. You can also opt for another once-in-a-lifetime trip: a flightseeing tour by floatplane. 7-Night Alaska Southbound Glacier

This mid-May itinerary on Celebrity Summit is currently the line's lowest-priced Alaska cruise for the 2024 season. The one-way sailing from Seward includes a day of scenic cruising around Hubbard Glacier: one of Alaska's most beautiful natural treasures at 7 miles wide, 76 miles long and an impressive 30 stories high. The ship also calls on ports in Juneau, Skagway, Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan, with an additional full day cruising the Inside Passage, before disembarking in Vancouver.

For 2025, this same itinerary currently starts at $649 per person for the May 16 sailing on Celebrity Summit.

7-Night Alaska Northbound Glacier

The reverse itinerary of the southbound voyage above, this cruise offers similar ports of call and sea days, except you'll stop in Sitka rather than Skagway. This sailing is also on Celebrity Summit. During your time in Icy Strait Point, consider a whale watching excursion; you are guaranteed to see whales (or receive your money back) on one of the tours departing from their shores. In Sitka, take a guided hike to explore the beautiful Tongass National Forest or a tour to learn about the Tlingit culture. This outing includes a visit to local totem artists and a beer meister, as well as a sampling of regional foods at a popular restaurant.

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean's one-way sailing aboard Radiance of the Seas features scenic cruising along the Inside Passage and Hubbard Glacier, as well as stops in the ports of Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Sitka and Skagway. Consider booking a ride on the White Pass and Yukon Route while in Skagway: The historic narrow-gauge railway offers a picturesque ride through Alaska's wilderness, with views of White Pass.

The reverse itinerary, the Southbound Alaska & Hubbard Glacier voyage, is also available on Radiance of the Seas; prices start at $339 per person for the May 10, 2024, sailing. In 2025, the May 30 northbound itinerary aboard Radiance of the Seas currently begins at $680 per person.

7-Night Alaska Experience Cruise

This round-trip voyage from Seattle on Quantum of the Seas calls on Sitka, Skagway and Juneau in Alaska. It also makes a late afternoon stop in Victoria, British Columbia , where you can plan to have dinner that evening. You'll have two days at sea for relaxing or enjoying all the activities and attractions on the ship, including the RipCord by iFLY skydiving simulator, robotic bartenders and live performances with aerial entertainers. You can also take a ride on the FlowRider surf simulator, surrounded by snowcapped mountain views and calving glaciers.

In 2025, this round-trip voyage from Seattle on Quantum of the Seas starts at $840 per person for the Sept. 8 voyage.

7-Day Alaska from Seattle

This seven-day voyage on Carnival Spirit sails round-trip from Seattle and features one day to explore the ship while at sea, plus a scenic cruising day in Tracy Arm Fjord. Ports of call include Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, as well as a late evening stop in Victoria before you disembark the next day in Seattle. A shorter cruise may be an attractive option if you don't have extensive vacation time or you prefer to spend a few days ashore before or after your sailing. If kids are in tow for the adventure – and it's your first time cruising with them – you might also want fewer days at sea to test the waters (literally). Princess Cruises: 4-Day Alaska Sampler

This 2025 cruise aboard Discovery Princess includes one port of call, Ketchikan, and two days at sea between Vancouver and Seattle. This 4-Day Alaska Sampler itinerary is also offered on May 13, 2025, on Royal Princess , with a starting price of $327 per person. The reverse itinerary (Seattle to Vancouver) is offered on May 23, 2025, on Grand Princess; pricing starts at $347 per person.

Princess Cruises: 5-Day Alaska Sampler

If you want to sail with Princess for one extra day, consider booking the five-day sampler cruise sailing round-trip from Vancouver. This early season itinerary aboard Caribbean Princess calls on Sitka and Ketchikan, offering more time ashore to explore these two popular coastal towns along Alaska's Inside Passage. Guests will also have two sea days to enjoy activities and dining experiences on the ship.

How to find the best Alaska cruise deals

Book during wave season.

As previously mentioned, you can take advantage of some of the best deals of the year during wave season. Promotions offered during wave season include lower cruise fares, reduced deposits and onboard credits. You can also find special rates (or free fares) for the third and fourth guests in the same room, making this the perfect time to book a family cruise.

In addition, look for discounts on higher-level staterooms and suites, or even accommodations in exclusive areas of the ship, such as The Haven on Norwegian Cruise Line or The Retreat on Celebrity Cruises. These private spaces offer swanky extras like luxurious accommodations, all-inclusive pricing , butler service, a team of attendants and concierge service, as well as private restaurants, lounges and pools. With lower pricing, wave season may be the best time to splurge on a cruise vacation in one of these upscale enclaves.

Promotional pricing beyond wave season

If you miss booking your cruise during wave season, don't panic. Many lines offer special pricing and flash sales throughout the year and advertise lower fares for voyages during Alaska's shoulder seasons, which fall in May and September.

"You will always find the more affordable Alaska cruises toward the beginning and end of the season. This year, the Alaska cruise season begins in April and continues through October," says Chris Gray Faust, executive editor of Cruise Critic. She adds, "The challenge with shoulder season Alaska cruises is that the weather might not be the best – it can snow in Alaska in April and early May – and in the fall, the nights will be longer (although, there is a chance you might see northern lights )."

In addition to giving up the warmer summer weather (and possibly having snow), you may also miss some optimal wildlife viewing opportunities if you cruise early or late in the season. For example, the peak time for bear-watching excursions extends from mid-June to mid-August, which falls during the height of the Alaska cruise season in July and August.

If you're looking for other ways to save money on your cruise, Gray Faust advises that older ships also provide more value when you're looking for deals.

It's important to note that a few of this year's wave deals extend just until the end of February 2024, so you'll need to refer to the individual cruise line websites to see the exact dates for the special offers. You may also be able to find lower prices on some discount and aggregator sites, like Cruise Critic, Cruises.com and Priceline.

How Much to Budget for an Alaskan Cruise

A typical Alaska Cruise can cost between $600 and $5,000 per person, depending on the length of your cruise, the type of cruise you choose, and your room choice. We recommend budgeting an additional $1,000 to $1,500 per person for shore excursions to get the most out of your Alaskan cruise. You’ll also want to consider airfare, transportation, and lodging before and after your cruise in your budget.

Budgeting for Shore Excursions and Adventures

For an excellent itinerary and a vacation you will never forget, we recommend budgeting $1,000 - $1,500 for shore excursions per person for a 7-day cruise. This would get you a whale watching tour in Juneau or  Icy Strait , helicopter  dog sled tour in Juneau or Skagway , a train tour in Skagway , a float plane flightseeing tour in Ketchikan , and then a different excursion in a different port.

Of course, there’s plenty of room for flexibility. A shore excursion budget can range from low to high depending on what type of excursions you are interested in. You can buy city tours in almost every port for less $75 or spend as much as $600 for an extended helicopter dog sledding tour .

Cruising budgets can range of course by the level of activity and dining while on vacation. All of your meals will be included in your cruise, but some travelers like to get off the ship for meals to experience the local restaurant scenes which are growing in popularity. Juneau, for example. has seen massive growth in the past couple of years with an explosion of new restaurants from fine dining to eclectic food carts.

If you are active throughout the day and partaking in multiple excursions to see as much as possible, you generally will not have time to re-board the ship for lunch so you might want to count on eating lunch out if you have a busy shore excursion itinerary. This won't be an option in all ports, like Ketchikan, which generally has short port times.

If you are looking to experience some of the local restaurants you should budget $12-$30 per meal depending on the type of dining experience you are looking for.

Make sure you check the cruising package you purchased if you are interested in drinking beverages with alcohol on your cruise. Some itineraries offer worry-free all-inclusive alcohol packages which can be a great deal. If you do not opt into an all-inclusive package but plan on buying multiple drinks, you may be spending more money than the package deal.

Southeast Alaska is full of gift shops selling products from pencil erasers to shirts to jewelry. If you are planning on buying jewelry, there are plenty of options and the streets are lined with jewelry stores. Jewelry is the one product on your cruise that you can actually negotiate price on. The prices tend to start quite high, so make sure you ask for a better price.

How Much Does an Alaska Cruise Cost in 2024?

I f you're planning a cruise to Alaska this year, you may be enticed by low prices (in the hundreds) for a weeklong cruise. However, it's important to know that those fares are just the beginning of the cost for the entire trip.

Typically, the lowest advertised prices with mainstream cruise lines don't include taxes and port fees, specialty dining costs, alcoholic or nonalcoholic drinks, shore excursions , Wi-Fi access, gratuities and other expenses. On top of that, bargain fares usually refer to inside cabins with no windows. In a picturesque, bucket list destination like Alaska, you will realistically want a room with a private balcony so you can take in the spectacular scenery from the comfort of your room.

When to cruise to Alaska depends on what you're interested in seeing and doing during your vacation , but summer is typically the best time to visit The Great Land. Between mid-May and mid-July, you can experience 24 hours of daylight. This period is also an optimal time for wildlife viewing; you can see bears feasting on salmon, humpback whales and orcas, furry baby moose and thousands of nesting bald eagles. Cruise lines often reserve their lowest prices for sailings early or late in the Alaska cruising season , but it's still possible to find deals in the middle of the summer.

With all of this in mind, we've listed both the lowest interior cabin fares and the average total costs for a balcony stateroom across eight popular cruise lines for weeklong itineraries in June 2024. (Note: All fares quoted are per person, double occupancy, unless otherwise noted. Prices were accurate at the time of writing.)

Holland America Line

Holland America Line's 2024 Alaska season extends from April to September; in 2024, there are more than 60 cruise-only voyages and cruisetours (combined land and sea packages). With the exception of one 28-day journey, itineraries range from seven to 18 days.

Average starting price (per person)

This June, Holland America 's lowest-priced itinerary is the 7-Day Glacier Discovery Southbound voyage departing from Whittier, Alaska, on June 23, 2024, aboard Nieuw Amsterdam . The voyage features scenic cruising in Hubbard Glacier, Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and the Inside Passage. You'll also stop in the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, before disembarking in Vancouver, British Columbia . The starting price is $409 per person for an inside cabin, and veranda staterooms start at $2,114 per person (cruise-only fare).

Starting price (per person)

For this sailing, there is a $291 charge per person for taxes, fees and port expenses. Specialty dining, alcoholic drinks (and many nonalcoholic beverages, such as bottled water and specialty coffees), excursions, Wi-Fi access, gratuities and some other amenities cost extra.

Instead of paying for these extras individually, you can book Holland America's "Have It All" package. It covers one dinner at a specialty restaurant; one shore excursion (up to $100 per guest); a signature beverage package (for drinks up to $11 each) and a Wi-Fi package. For a limited time, you can also receive a $200 onboard credit per stateroom. A veranda stateroom plus the package starts at $2,569 per person.

If you purchase the "Have It All" package with the veranda stateroom, select the location of your cabin yourself (an additional $90), add in the port taxes and fees ($291) and include crew gratuities at $17 per guest, per day for non-suite staterooms ($119), the total cost is about $3,000 per person. You'll still need to budget for drinks that cost more than $11 each; bottles of wine with dinner; additional evenings of specialty dining; other shore excursions and miscellaneous expenses.

Princess Cruises

Princess is offering 14 unique itineraries and 68 cruisetours during the 2024 Alaska season, which runs from May to September. Itineraries range from a seven-day cruise to a 17-day escorted cruisetour.

Princess's lowest-priced cruise in June is the 7-Day Voyage of the Glaciers with Glacier Bay (Northbound) from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Anchorage (Whittier), Alaska , on Grand Princess. Embarking on June 5, 2024, the sailing includes scenic cruising in College Fjord and Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve, a day at sea and stops in the coastal towns of Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway in Alaska. Interior cabins start at $448 per person, while staterooms with a balcony start at $1,698 per person. If you select your own balcony stateroom (instead of letting the cruise line place you), the cost is $1,791 per person.

Additional fees (taxes, gratuities, etc.)

Taxes, fees and port expenses for this cruise will run you $284 per person. At the $1,791 rate, you will be in the Princess Standard fare class, which includes the ships' complimentary dining venues, entertainment and the MedallionClass experience.

You can upgrade to Princess Plus (starting at $2,211 for a balcony room) to add Wi-Fi access (one device per guest); gratuities; a beverage package (covering drinks up to $15 each); two fitness classes per cruise; two premium desserts per day; two casual dining meals and more. For additional amenities, such as Wi-Fi access for up to four devices per guest; a higher-level beverage package (for drinks up to $20 each); two specialty dining meals per guest; unlimited exercise classes and more, opt for the Princess Premier package. Balcony rooms under this category start at $2,351 per guest.

If you purchase the Princess Premier package with the balcony room, the total cost with port taxes and fees is a little more than $2,600 per person – and the pricing is nearly all-inclusive. This package may also include free cruise fare for third and fourth guests traveling in the same stateroom. You will still need to budget for shore excursions; note that over-the-top experiences like flightseeing, helicopter and dog sledding tours, and scenic rides on the historic White Pass and Yukon Route Railway can get pricey.

Total cost: From $2,635 per person

Norwegian Cruise Line offers one of the longest Alaska cruising seasons. In 2024, there are 44 scheduled cruise and cruisetour itineraries between April and October, ranging from seven to 18 days.

The June 3, 2024, sailing on Norwegian Jewel is Norwegian Cruise Line 's least expensive Alaska cruise that month, starting at $449 per person for an inside cabin. In comparison, a balcony cabin starts at $1,879 per person. The itinerary – Alaska: Hubbard Glacier & Skagway – embarks from Seward, Alaska, and includes scenic sea days cruising Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage, plus stops in the ports of Icy Strait Point, Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan (Ward Cove) in Alaska, before disembarking in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The line's ongoing "Free At Sea" deal is included in the price and features an unlimited open bar, free specialty dining (up to $180 for the first two guests in the stateroom), a discount of $50 per excursion and complimentary Wi-Fi access (a savings of up to $200).

Open bar and specialty dining gratuities in the package are approximately $175 per person. Taxes, fees and port expenses are about $302 per person. You'll also need to include the additional $20 per person, per day service charge ($140 for the seven-day voyage).

If you book the balcony stateroom at $1,879 per person, which includes the "Free At Sea" package, and add in the taxes and port fees, dining and beverage gratuities and the daily service charge for the crew, the total cost for the cruise is around $2,500 per person. Royal Caribbean International's 2024 Alaska cruise season extends from April to September; there are 50 scheduled cruise-only and land-and-sea tours. Combined pre- and post-cruise tours last up to 13 nights, and cruise-only itineraries last between six to eight nights.

For the lowest fare in June, sail from Seward, Alaska, to Vancouver, British Columbia, on a seven-night cruise aboard Radiance of the Seas on June 7, 2024. The inside cabin fare starts at $438 per person. A balcony stateroom starts at $2,877 per person (to select your own room). This voyage cruises around Alaska's Hubbard Glacier, sails the Inside Passage in Canada and stops in Juneau, Skagway, Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan in Alaska.

The guaranteed balcony price at $2,877 is for a smaller stateroom; you can select a larger cabin for a higher cost. Taxes, fees and port expenses for the cruise are $389 per person.

The total cost for the balcony stateroom, port taxes and fees, and gratuities ($18 per person, per day) for this Royal Caribbean cruise is about $3,400 per person. This price does not include extras like specialty dining, shore excursions, beverage packages or Wi-Fi access, so you will need to budget extra to cover those expenses.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line has 19 five- to nine-night itineraries for the 2024 Alaska season, which runs from May to September.

The lowest price for a seven-night Alaska cruise in June with Disney Cruise Line is the June 3, 2024, voyage on Disney Wonder . The price for an inside cabin starts at approximately $3,472 for two guests, which includes taxes, fees and port expenses. In contrast, the fare for a guaranteed veranda stateroom starts at about $6,482 for two guests (including the additional fees); at this rate, Disney will select your specific cabin.

This round-trip sailing embarks from Vancouver, British Columbia. You'll begin your journey with a day at sea, then glacier viewing at Stikine Icecap in Alaska. Guests will stop in Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan in Alaska before another sea day and disembarkation in Vancouver.

Guests staying in regular stateroom accommodations will have gratuities of about $15 per person, per night. Once you add that in, you're looking at a cost of close to $6,600 per room (based on double occupancy) – or around $3,300 per person, if you split it. This price covers the cruise fare, taxes and port fees, the complimentary dining venues, onboard entertainment and gratuities for the crew.

You will need to budget extra for port adventures, beverages, and meals at adults-only venues like the Cadillac Lounge and Italian-themed Palo. The line offers Wi-Fi packages for an additional fee, which you can select once on board. Carnival Cruise Line's 2024 Alaska season runs from April through September, and there are 16 itineraries that range from seven to 14 days.

The lowest Alaska fare in June is $814 per person for the June 4, 2024, voyage aboard Carnival Spirit . The seven-day round-trip itinerary departing from Seattle, Washington , includes one day at sea, cruising in Tracy Arm Fjord and stops in the Alaska port towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, plus Victoria, British Columbia. A guaranteed balcony room without an obstructed view starts at $1,579 per person.

Taxes, fees and port expenses for this cruise are about $313 per person. If you'd like Wi-Fi access, you can purchase the Social Wi-Fi Plan starting at approximately $15 per person, per day. The higher level Value Wi-Fi Plan costs about $20 per person, per day, while the Premium Wi-Fi Plan comes in at around $21 per person, per day.

A nonalcoholic beverage package, Bottomless Bubbles, starts at around $10 per adult and around $7 per child each day. For nonalcoholic beverages and select alcoholic drinks (up to $20 each), purchase the Cheers package. It starts at about $60 per person, per day, but you can save 10% if you purchase the package before you sail. With Cheers, you'll also receive a discount on bottles of wine (plus other perks). Gratuities cost $16 per person, per day, in a regular stateroom. Restaurants like the Mexican-inspired BlueIguana Cantina and Guy's Burger Joint are complimentary.

When you add up the price of the balcony stateroom, port taxes and fees, the Value package for Wi-Fi access, the Cheers beverage package and gratuities, you're looking at around $2,600 per person for this Carnival Cruise Line itinerary. In addition to those expenses, you'll have to budget extra funds for shore excursions, specialty dining and some other amenities.

Silversea Cruises

Silversea Cruises is offering 35 Alaska voyages between May and September 2024. The shortest itinerary is seven days and the longest itinerary is 16 days.

The lowest-priced Alaska cruise with Silversea in June is the June 27, 2024, seven-day sailing aboard Silver Muse from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Seward, Alaska. The intimate 596-guest ship will visit Ketchikan, Icy Strait Point, Skagway and Valdez in Alaska – and complete two days of scenic cruising – before disembarking in Seward.

The all-inclusive port-to-port fare starts at $4,350 per person for a Classic Veranda Suite (the most affordable suite category with a balcony). For a room with a window instead of a balcony, book a Vista Suite starting at $3,350 per person.

Silversea's all-inclusive fares include luxurious suite accommodations, Champagne upon arrival, butler service and other perks. The pricing covers port taxes and fees; complimentary gourmet dining; all beverages, including Champagne, wine, beer and premium spirits; and gratuities. You'll also receive personalized, attentive service with a nearly one-to-one crew-to-guest ratio, and at least one included shore excursion in every port. Complimentary excursions in Skagway include a ride on the White Pass Scenic Railway, a visit to a sled dog and musher's camp and the Chilkoot Trail Hike & Float Adventure. Many of the included excursions with Silversea are quite costly on other lines.

There are no additional fees with the all-inclusive fare. However, you might incur additional personal expenses if you choose to order a fancy bottle of wine with dinner or book an extreme shore excursion adventure, like flightseeing over the glaciers.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas' 22 Alaska cruises in 2024 sail between May and September and last seven to 14 nights.

The seven-night voyage on June 5, 2024, is the line's lowest-priced June sailing in Alaska, starting at $6,599 per person. Guests on Seven Seas Explorer will sail from Seward, Alaska, to Vancouver, British Columbia, with stops in Sitka, Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan in Alaska, plus two days of scenic cruising at the Inside Passage and Hubbard Glacier.

The low base fares for Alaska cruises on larger cruise lines may grab your attention, but as you click through to see what's included and make your booking, you'll find additional costs on nearly every page.
