Newbury Park, California natives, The Neighbourhood, or shortened by their fans as The NBHD, are an indie rock band from the United States.

Formed in 2011 by friends Jesse Rutherford, Jeremy Freedman, Zach Abels, Mikey Margott and Bryan Sammis, the band released two EPs, “I’m Sorry…” which contained the explosive “Sweater Weather” in 2012. Later that same year, the band released a second EP entitled “Thank You.”

By early 2013 the band released their first full-length album “I Love You” and the announcement of their performance at the Coachella music festival that year. Because of the success of their EPs, “I Love You” debuted 39th on the Billboard200 albums chart, with “Sweater Weather” reaching number one on the Billboard alternative chart by June 2013. The release of the album meant a tour; a tour that they called “The Love Collection Tour” alongside bands JMSN, Lovelife and The 1975.

Riding the success of all their successful tours and festivals, the band premiered a new song “Silver” on BBC 1 radio in December 2013, and in January released “Honest” for the Spiderman 2 soundtrack. Around the same time, they also announced the “#000000 & #FFFFFF” project (aka Black & White) to be released sometime during 2014. Despite the loss of drummer Bryan Sammis (and the consequent gain of Brandon Fried) they again set out on a world tour, “Le Tour Noir” in 2014.

The band is adamant about maintaining a certain image, having turned down television appearances that wouldn’t film in black and white. The artistic style has maintained a great importance to The Neighbourhood, and when asked about it, frontman Jesse Rutherford responds, “It’s important to stick to something. The black and white image was one defining thing for us where we were like ‘we’re gonna do that, we’re gonna keep it.”

Live reviews

Everything from my shoulders on down to my hips was squished between the different bodies that were packed around me while we waited for The Neighbourhood to take the stage on Tuesday night at the Masquerade Music Park.

The heat from everyone around me was unbearable and made it somewhat difficult to breathe. I was glad that the concert was held outside. I don’t think anyone would have been able to stand for two hours inside the Masquerade nightclub without the occasionally cool summer’s breeze wafting through the wall of bodies, cooling us down as we waited. People lucky enough to be closer to the stage were sprayed with water by the stagehands. Unfortunately, I was just outside of the water’s reach. Not only was the heat an issue, but the overcast sky threatened to rain just like the last time the Neighbourhood played Atlanta. Fortunately, Mother Nature had other plans. For some fans, the anticipation led them to start singing “Sweater Weather,” one of the band's top hits, to pass the time. Although, the singers were cut short when the lights flashed on stage and the haunting intro of “Female Robbery” blasted through the speakers. Jesse Rutherford, the band’s lead vocalist, dressed in all black and a leather jacket, despite the muggy heat, took center stage with plumes of smoke surrounding him and the band, and three LED screens on stage with black and white graphics to accompany the music. From the very beginning, Rutherford was a bouncing ball of energy. He paced the stage, waved at fans, and pined for the crowds’ reaction, which he easily got. I guess he knew that after all the waiting the fans did, he had better up the energy of the tired, hot, and sweaty crowd. Rutherford’s voice sounded deeper with a little rasp to it, giving the songs a sexier sound, except when the group performed “Lurk” and Rutherford’s voice sounded almost exactly like Justin Bieber’s. Then the band took on a more somber tone, staying with the “West Coast vibes” as Rutherford said. They performed the ironically named “West Coast,” “WDYWFM,” and “Wires” to set the mood before moving back to the high energy that the group had in the beginning of the show. Of course when “Sweater Weather” started, the crowd went wild, but the screams and excitement increased ten-fold when the twangy guitar cue for “Afraid” — which was also the last song — ripped through the crowd. Middle fingers flew up in the air as Rutherford got to the chorus and his fans chanted along with him. Later, on the drive home, my mom said that she could hear everyone singing the last song from where she was parked down the street. As the last notes echoed and the band left the stage, the crowd chanted for an encore, but were only lucky enough to get the band’s half finished water bottles and balled up set lists which were tossed out into the audience.

The Neighbourhood are a group of 5 guys from LA who have a black and white styled vision for themselves and even the fans participate in that as well. The band as well as all the fans who know of their black and white theme will dress in those colors for the show. Even the visuals during the show are black and white, they do not use colored lights, and have screens that show black and white video during their songs. Their music for those who don't know could be described as dark pop, alternative, and hip hop based. They have a tendency to have more of a hip hop styled beat with alternative guitar styles as well as a poppy melody that could be sang more in a pop way or fast like hip hop. Its an interesting style combination that works very well and is different than what you hear everyday.

The frontman Jesse Rutherford knows how to work the crowd. He moves to different parts of the stage going to the edge to be close to fans, to dancing when the mood feels right, to getting crowd interaction having everyone chant or move their hands in the air like him. The band plays a mixture of songs from their debut album, their EPs, and mixtapes, so there is a variety to for them to choose from. It's always great to hear old material, current material, and new material all in one night. The shows are high energy even though their songs while listening on CD are usually more relaxed and sort of melancholic, during live shows the fans will sing the lyrics out all together and dance and sway making it so energized and fun. Of course by the show being so great must mean the band does a great job, which is true the music is always on point and the singing is very much like what you'd hear on a recording. These men know how to put on a good show and the more the crowd is into it the more they are too. It was a blast having everyone dance and sing along the whole show, as well as it being the final stop of the US tour for their album it made it special to see them for the last time until they have new music. They are a great band made up of creative, funny, sweet guys who make their fans very happy. This was my fourth time seeing them this year and I will definitely be seeing them again. Black and white will never die.

We’d been looking forward to seeing The Neighbourhood in concert being as they’ve been our favorite band for about 7 years, but last night was hands down the worst concert experience we’ve ever had. The a couple members of staff at the Van Buren made it even more miserable. I fully intend on calling the Van Buren to complain. The fans were so disgustingly rude and selfish with absolutely no regard for decency. We’ve never experienced anything like it and we go to more concert last than anyone else we know personally. We always buy 4 tickets and buy lots of merch. We’re very supportive fans. We were uncomfortably crammed by some truly awful, rude, insensitive people. We have our usual complaints about the Van Buren, when it comes to lighting, sound and design, but our feeling is that the best thing about this venue is that its size has brought in some bands that might not have come to Phoenix otherwise. I hope when The Neighbourhood returns to Phoenix they play Comerica. As far as the band, who we absolutely adore, they were incredible and Jesse Rutherford is even more beautiful in person. That being said, we were disappointed in many of their choices for the set list. We did not enjoy either of the two opening bands either. All in all it was a pretty terrible night and it’ll take us a while to get over our disappointment. We went home and cried...The fans were that bad...Like really, really bad.

How do I even begin to describe The Neighbourhood concert? For starters, The Neighbourhood is by far the best band I've seen live and this was the second time I saw them. Jesse carries so much energy with him while performing on stage. The only thing I wasn't too happy about was the turn out of the crowd. As they said they did book a "hilariou$ly over$ized" venue but come on,who in their right mind wouldn't want to see such a talented and energetic band? I think they're very underrated and they deserve a lot more attention than they receive. Regardless of the turnout, The Neighbourhood made it their best efforts to wow the crowd that they had in front of them and I assure you that's exactly what they did. The crowd, while it was a small one, was so engaged in the concert and clearly no one was dissappointed. The setlist that they put together couldn't have been anymore perfect and it was exciting to hear new songs that haven't been previously released yet. Although the first Neighbourhood concert I attended I was able to meet Jesse and Zach, I liked this one a lot better because I was so much closer and could feel the energy and enjoy the concert more. Their music is so unique that it's hard not to instantly fall in love with them.To anyone who hasn't seen or even heard of The Neighbourhood I highly recommend you check them out. You won't be dissappointed.

The Neighbourhood was the first band I saw perform at Lollapalooza last year. It was super hot, and the crowd was excited with anticipation for the festival to kick off. So I was quite surprised when the band came out in all black. The lead singer had on a black hoodie sporting the band's logo (which he eventually took off). They started off really well, getting the crowd moving to the beat. Looking around, I noticed that there were a lot of younger people who came to watch The Neighbourhood. They sounded really good live, and they looked at ease up on the stage. The vibe of the concert was pretty relaxed and chilled. As the concert continued, more people started joining the crowd. What I like about The Neighbourhood is their eery sound that grabs the listener's attention. They really brought out that sound, and the band sounded just like the audio recordings. One unfortunate thing that could have been planned better is the order of songs on the set list. They played their most famous song, "Sweater Weather" in the middle of the concert. So, thinking that the concert was over after the single, several people left to go to another show. Despite that hiccup, The Neighbourhood really showed us what a talented, young band they are, and I'm glad I got to see them.

My name is Sabrina and you will definitely be hearing from me a lot in the next few months to years (trying to make that sound a lot less stalker-y as it does). I've been listening to your music since 2012 and I instantly felt a connection. The way you write and sing about real feelings that a lot of current "hit" artists sugar coat speaks volumes to me, and a lot of your fans, something I'm sure you already know.

I've never been to a concert before and the fact that the first was on #THEFLOOD2015 tour, I will definitely be cherishing forever. I saw you guys in Pittsburgh and sang along to virtually every song. I will be completely honest and say that I was a little skeptical of how the live performance would be and how it would vary in comparison to the record, but I was incredibly pleased. I was definitely shaken to the core by how the live music made me feel, a feeling that I can definitely say that I'm addicted to. I just want to thank you for that experience as well as telling you that I appreciate every single word you write and that I often find myself analyzing your lyrics during the hardest times. You guys definitely have my support 100% of the way.

The Neighbourhood was absolutely outstanding. Despite being in section C, Jesse made me feel like I was in the first row. Not once were people sitting down throughout the entire setlist. With the neighborhood having a darker image than most indie artists out there, you would expect the band to be a bit more secluded and reserved onstage. However, this ended up being the exact opposite. Jesse can work a crowd extremely well and is very charismatic. He interacted with the crowd throughout the concert. He has such a nice sense of humor. The lighting and graphics were really cool too and really made the entire show. They were more important to the concert than one would think. The overall quality of the show was an A+. The neighborhood was amazing live. In fact, they were much better live than in the studio. I showed up to the concert expecting to have a good time and ended up getting so much more than that. There's a sense of unity one feels after spending hours listening to live music you love with people who have the same taste in music as you. Without a doubt I would see them live again.

There is honestly no better place to see The Neighbourhood than in Los Angeles. The California natives' El tour blanco was one of the most amazing shows I have ever seen in my life. Their energy never dies on stage, not even for the second they were told they had to cut the show a song short due to noise permits. They came back out and finished with the perfect attitude and performance. The music is impeccable if not better than the recordings of each of their songs and the graphics on the screen behind them match the vibe of the whole show as well. They can own an entire Victoria's Secret store with the amount of bras being thrown at them from the insane pit and their laid back attitude was shown when Jesse grabbed someone's phone from the pit and took some selfies making the entire crowd feel comfortable to be in their presence and ambitious to hear the music. Definitely a concert I didn't want to end.

I saw Imagine Dragons last autumn on their Night Visions Tour with NEIGHBOURHOOD and The Envy Corps. Before the concert, I listened to their album, I Love You. and I loved all of the songs. They were meaningful and were unlike any that I had heard previously. I was so intrigued by Jesse Rutherford's voice and I didn't know what to expect when seeing them live. I was not disappointed. They were AMAZING! Sweater Weather had just been debuted on the radio, so it was already a fan favorite. The song was performed better than expected and the performance itself was lively and full of energy. There was never a dull moment or any slip-ups during the entire set. This is one show that you would definitely want to see, especially if you are a fan of The NEIGHBOURHOOD or just an Indie/Alternative music fan. The NEIGHBOURHOOD is one of my favorite bands of all time, and soon may be yours too.

I put the following review on the “Bands in Town” app as well....

I’ve been to multiple concerts covering various genres over the years. So I’m not saying what I’m about to say without past experience. I am a concert junkie. I consider The Neighbourhood to be my favorite band so it hurts me more than I can express to only rate them two stars. Now I understand this was a music festival, not a solo The Neighbourhood concert, but their performance was incredibly underwhelming. Not only did they only perform about 7 songs, Jesse was-he wasn’t present with us! Me and other crowd members started to question if he was on something or just high. And...even if not, his overall performance was very dull. He sang off from the music on more than one occasion and only addressed the crowd once. Just very disappointed...I’m sorry nbhd, I still love you guys.

Anne Frank Walking Tour

Follow in the footsteps of the young Anne Frank as she lived and played in an Amsterdam neighbourhood. Learn all about her family and hardships, as well as little known details about life in Amsterdam during wartime.

Join local guide, Jeroen, and get to know the neighbourhood where Anne Frank and her family lived.

Follow in Anne’s footsteps as she walked to everyday places in her life   and see the locations that played a part in her childhood.

Also, hear stories of what Amsterdam was like during World War II, told by an experienced guide who grew up in the same neighbourhood.

This tour is available in English and Dutch, each day.

Join our walking tour and learn more about the tough lives of Anne Frank and her family.

In preparing to make my first visit to Amsterdam (from the United States), this walking tour was one of the most anticipated activities I was looking forward to. I have been an Anne Frank fan since I was a kid, and the opportunity to see locations that were important to the individuals involved in the story of the Secret Annex was overwhelming. From seeing Margot and Anne’s schools, to the bookstore where the famous diary originated, to the pre-hiding residences of the van Pels and Frank families…every few steps brought our tour to a spot with an incredible story. Not only were the sites we visited incredibly fascinating (and moving), but our tour guide, Jeroen was better than I could have ever hoped. Not only was he incredibly knowledgeable about the lives of the individuals, but he illustrated the history of the area during World War II. He is a gifted storyteller, but he also makes the tour feel very personal; his tours have the feeling of a casual conversation. He is incredibly warm and welcoming as well as passionate about the topic. If you are only slightly familiar with the Frank family’s story, you will still enjoy this tour. But if you are a huge Anne Frank admirer like me, you simply MUST take this tour with Jeroen. You will NOT be disappointed. The next time I find myself back in Amsterdam, you can bet I’ll be signing up to do it again. - Ryan Cooper, St. Louis, Missouri, USA

My sister and I loved the Anne Frank walking tour yesterday (July 5, 2022) with Jeroen. Jeroen was so knowledgeable and my sister and I learnt so much. It was emotional to see where Anne grew up, and went about her life/school, and what should have been a normal childhood. It made the book diaries come alive in our imagination, you really felt close to her. And to see where her dad purchased her diary from was just incredible. I would highly recommend this tour, it’s in the open air, no queuing, it’s fascinating and it’s so real. We loved it!!! 10/10 Ms. K.A. Smith, Amsterdam (UK)

Thank you for the interesting Anne Frank Tour we were lucky to be part of a few weeks ago. We fully enjoyed the great insights our guide Jeroen Van Nes shared with us through a mix of historic anecdotes, personal memories and general information about Amsterdam. It certainly was a very insightful way to explore this amazing city! -Lorenz & Georgette Schmid, Switzerland (CH)

We took the Anne Frank Walking Tour with Jeroen and enjoyed it very much. His knowledge of the historical facts of the subject and the area, made the tour very interesting. We would not hesitate in recommending him as a tour guide to any future travelers and we would look you up again if we ever came to Amsterdam again. You met our expectations of this tour and more. Thank you, -Lorraine and Walter Kapko

Mr. van Nes’ tour was a highlight of our trip to Amsterdam. He is the perfect companion to a visit to the Anne Frank House. I have always wanted to see the places mentioned in her diary. I could not find such a reasonable tour until I stumbled on to his website. His communication was great and he met us at the tram stop. The 1.5 hour tour was very informative and much easier than trying to find those places on our own. I highly recommend it! -Christin Whitehead

My son (11) and I booked the walking tour with Mr van Nes on our short trip to Amsterdam. We wanted to get some insight into Anne Frank’s life before she and her family went into hiding. My son had learned about WWll at school and was eager to learn about the Dutch perspective as well. We were not disappointed. Mr van Nes is a very friendly man with lots of knowledge about WWll, the Jewish community in Amsterdam and Anne Frank in particular. You could tell that this was a subject close to his heart and he answered all our questions patiently and elaborately. He also showed us old pictures of places we visited with him which made a great impression on my son. The tour was interesting throughout and my son said that he learned a lot afterwards. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone interested in Anne Frank’s life in Amsterdam and it is also a beautiful walk through this impressive city away from the tourist crowds. -Ms. Stefanie Gaisser

Thank you ever so much for your excellent Anne Frank Walking Tour. We thoroughly enjoyed it. You have so much to offer because you grew up in the area and you explain all the fine details in good English as well. You also showed us some amazing photographs and pictures and literature you carry on you as a file. It was very fulfilling indeed. Keep up the good work. Kind regards. - Dr. and Mrs. Govender. Cape Town, South Africa.

J.H., Amsterdam (Rivierenbuurt)

We highly recommend this tour. When you’re in a different city taking a tour there’s many things you look for and Jeroen van Nes certainly fulfilled everything and more we expected of a Tour Guide. We truly enjoyed the tour he gave us and he was extremely knowledgeable of the area not only giving us a lot of facts but willing to answer many of our questions along the way and truly knew much of the life of Anne Frank and carried with him a book of many fascinating pictures. The tour was not only informative but fun and if you have time restraints, he can adjust the length of the tour for you. We highly recommend this Anne Frank Walking Tour of Jeroen van Nes Mary & Jack Viadero of Boca Raton Florida

Dear Jeroen, Thank you so much for the excellent tour on Sunday (October 16, 2022), for me and my mom Denise. We absolutely loved it, you are a fantastic guide and brought Anne Frank's story alive for us. I've just left a review on Trip Advisor, and we have shared your details with our friend Meg C., who is visiting Amsterdam in a few month's time with her family. Thank you again for a superb experience.

Thank you so much! Here's my review…(participated in the AFWT July 18, 2023) We had a wonderful tour with Jeroen. He has such a depth of knowledge and personal experience growing up in the neighborhood. He's so personable and a pleasure to spend time with! There were so many landmarks we would have completely missed on our own - connecting it all and seeing it in person drove home the reality, and tragedy, of Anne Frank's life during WWII. I completely recommend the tour for other's looking for more than simply visiting the Anne Frank house. - Stephanie B., San Francisco USA

Jeroen was an excellent guide and gave us a terrific tour of Anne Franks’s neighborhood growing up. He met us at the meeting point in a timely manner and took us around to all the sites related to her upbringing. Jeroen was knowledgeable, professional, courteous and engaging - I would strongly recommend this walking tour! Eric R., Florida USA (tour done August 19, 2023)

Dear Jeroen, Thank you for the excellent Anne Frank walking tour today! (April 3, 2024) You provided a great depth of knowledge of the life and times of not only Anne Frank, but her family, friends and community. For us, completely new to the subject, it gave us a great insight into the history of Amsterdam. You were also a friendly and attentive host which made the experience even more special! Thank you! Martin and Donna Uglow (United Kingdom)

“We very much enjoyed our time with Jeroen. He is an authentic source of information about this area. History came alive for us and we learned details that we would have missed if we were not on this guided tour.” Patty, USA (April 21,2024)

The Neighbourhood Releases Album and New Tour Dates

the neighbourhood tour netherlands

LA band The Neighbourhood’s new album is now available for purchase.

The release of their second album Wipe Out also marks their release of new single of the same name. The self-titled track embodies the soft romantic nature of the whole album. To further that atmosphere the album was recorded at the beach and includes sounds of  the ocean throughout the album.

The new album has already garnered some attention from media sources. Stereogum said Wipe Out “… So deftly does it navigate the seams between genres and the dark back alleys of the soul.”

The Neighbourhood has also recently released a new music video for their song “R.I.P. 2 My Youth.” The song and video explore the themes of the loss of innocence and death. Most of the imagery is very dark, sometimes set inside an open coffin with a single light shining down on singer Jesse Rutherford.

Several new tour dates have also been added to their U.S. and European tour. Tickets are available for the new dates on the band’s site .

The Coolest Neighbourhoods in Amsterdam, the Netherlands

Gaurav Jain

Amsterdam has a lot more to offer than the Red Light District ‘s X-rated windows and smoky coffee shops. From its food scene to its raft of museums, boutiques and bustling outdoor markets, this is a cosmopolitan city with a village feel, thanks to its 17th-century Unesco-protected waterways and striking canal houses. To truly get to know the Dutch capital, take the time to explore some of its different neighbourhoods – from bustling De Wallen to uber-cool De Pijp, these are the best neighbourhoods to visit in Amsterdam. Did you know you can now travel with Culture Trip? Book now and join one of our premium small-group tours to discover the world like never before.

Architectural Landmark

For a long time, De Pijp, like most of Central Amsterdam’s outlying neighbourhoods, housed the city’s working class. It was mainly constructed in the 19th century to fulfil increased demand for housing. Vestiges of this fascinating urban history are still visible throughout De Pijp and the neighbourhood is known for its narrow townhouses, originally built to accommodate low-income families. The whole neighbourhood revolves around Amsterdam’s most famous market, Albert Cuyp Markt , which attracts hundreds of visitors every day. De Pijp is also home to many excellent cafes and restaurants, and is well known by locals for its amazing brunch restaurants , such as Little Collins, Bakers & Roasters and the Scandinavian Embassy.

2. De Wallen (Red-Light District)

Although De Wallen often gets a bad rap because of its connection with prostitution and drug tourism, it is actually the oldest neighbourhood in Amsterdam, and has been an important cultural centre for over 600 years. Several buildings in De Wallen attest to this long history, such as De Oude Kerk – the oldest building in Amsterdam – and a perfectly preserved clandestine Catholic church, Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder, located inside the attic of a 16th-century townhouse . Many cultural organisations have moved into De Wallen in recent years. Red Light Radio, for example, broadcasts shows from inside a set of former prostitution windows. Elsewhere in De Wallen, visitors can sample delicious beers at a socially conscious brewery called Brouwerij de Prael.

3. Nieuwmarkt en Lastage

Nieuwmarkt en Lastage trails southwards from Centraal station towards the River Amstel and contains several diverse areas. The northern side revolves around a large, former industrial harbour called Oosterdok, which has developed into one of the most architecturally innovative parts of the city, while its skyline features many impressive, modern buildings, such as the NEMO Science Museum and Amsterdam’s towering central library. Many other cultural hotspots reside beneath these structures, including Mediamatic , an eco-conscious creative initiative. Then there’s the southern inland section of Nieuwmarkt en Lastage, which houses an impressive number of historical sites, such as the Rembrandt House Museum; the first Protestant church in Amsterdam, Zuiderkerk ; and several sites associated with the city’s Jewish Quarter . Two regular markets also take place here, namely Waterloopleinmarkt, which centres on second-hand goods, and Nieuwmarkt, which features a wide selection of food stalls.

4. Buiksloterham (Amsterdam-Noord)

Amsterdam’s northern shoreline has undergone rapid development over the last few decades, turning the former industrial district into a new cultural centre. At the core of these changes are two architecturally stunning buildings located in Buiksloterham – the EYE Film Insititute and A’DAM Toren. Together they contain a wide range of cultural buildings, including cinemas, a film museum, several restaurants and a subterranean nightclub . Heading west, visitors can explore Northern Amsterdam’s rustic industrial landscape at NDSM Wharf , an area renowned for its excellent nightlife, street art and impressive cultural calendar. Although Buiksloterham may appear further afield than other neighbourhoods, a ferry service from Centraal station regularly travels to two ports along its coastline.

5. Westerpark

Westerpark, named after the largest park in the neighbourhood, is among the greenest parts of Amsterdam. Besides its wonderful recreation grounds, Westerpark also has an impressive concentration of Amsterdamse School architecture – a style of early 20th-century urban design characterised by red-brick facades and graceful, flowing arches. Elsewhere in Westerpark, visitors can roam through a former gas plant, Westergasfabriek, which has been converted into an enormous, multifunctional cultural centre.

6. Oud-West

7. oud-zuid.

A trip to Amsterdam isn’t complete without a jaunt into Oud-Zuid and its museum quarter. The neighbourhood boasts the Rijksmuseum , which holds Dutch and European art and artefacts from the Middle Ages to the present day. A short walk away is the Van Gogh Museum, the Moco Museum – home to works by Dalí and Banksy – and the Stedelijk, with its large collection of international modern art and design. On Saturday morning, head to zuiderMRKT, a small outdoor food market bursting with selections of cheese, made-to-order crêpes and fresh fruit and vegetables. At night, head to traditional Italian restaurant Le 4 Stagioni for its glorious pasta and pizza selection, before sauntering along to the corner of Cornelis Schuytstraat and Willemsparkweg to grab a drink at one of its brasseries.

Amsterdam Oost is one of the most diverse cultural hotspots in the Dutch capital. Kick your day off with a caffeine hit at Coffee Bru or Bar Bukowski, two of the neighbourhood’s best coffee shops, before visiting Tropenmuseum, one of Amsterdam’s largest museums, where artefacts and art celebrate cultural diversity. The Hermitage Museum is also worth a trip, thanks to the top examples of 17th-century Dutch art on display. If the sun is out, grab some picnic supplies from Gallizia Deli on the bustling Javastraat and hit Oosterpark, the first public park in Amsterdam.

Hop on a 20-minute train from Amsterdam Centraal station to reach the charming medieval city of Haarlem. Here, you’ll find a spread of museums, historical sites, quirky boutiques and cosy restaurants all within walking distance. Make your way to the Cathedral of St Bavo, the second-largest church in Holland, which is worth a visit for its zany neogothic architecture. Another Instagrammable landmark is De Adriaan windmill, a wooden towered mill originally built in 1778; wind your way to the top floor for spectacular views over the old town. For more great vistas, hit De Dakkas, a trendy roof terrace restaurant inside a huge greenhouse.

10. De Plantage

Get your nature fix with a trip to Amsterdam’s often overlooked De Plantage district. This leafy neighbourhood – dubbed the Cultural Garden of Amsterdam – is home to Artis Zoo and Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world, dating back to 1638. Meanwhile, culture comes in the form of the Royal Theatre Carré, the Dutch National Opera and Ballet and the Rembrandt House Museum, which allows you to visit the house where the painter lived and worked. If you love a good bargain, head to Waterlooplein flea market (open six days a week), which has 300 stalls selling everything from vinyl records to vintage clothes.

11. Amsterdam Centrum

You’re spoiled for choice in Amsterdam’s vibrant city centre when it comes to cute stores, hipster coffee shops, top-rated restaurants and Instagrammable streets. Come nightfall, this district comes alive. After taking an evening stroll and grabbing a bite to eat, roll into bed at one of the neighbourhood’s many hotels , such as the Hoxton and W Amsterdam.

12. 9 Streets

This area, Negen Straatjes in Dutch, is one of Amsterdam’s most photogenic micro-neighbourhoods, with cute thoroughfares straddling some of the city’s grandest canals. Spend the day shopping at stores such as Scotch & Soda and Dr Martens, before heading to one of the neighbourhood’s many eateries. Restaurant ‘t Zwaantje, which dates back to 1973, is known for its Wienerschnitzel, mussels and hot apple pie; Bar Brasserie OCCO is loved for its caviar and oysters, and Chocolaterie Pompadour and Urban Cacao are must-visits for sweet treats.

13. Nieuw-West

After World-War II, Amsterdam’s western neighbourhoods began to encroach upon several villages outside the city’s former limits. Eventually, these smaller settlements became part of Amsterdam proper and are today known as the Nieuw-West. This sprawling nieghbourhood is centred around an enormous lake called Sloterpas and its surrounding green belt. Recently, many cultural initiatives have set up shop in Nieuw-West, such as Radion or the Appel Arts Centre, and the neighbourhood is becoming an increasingly popular visitor destination.

14. Zuidoost

Geographically speaking, Zuidoost doesn’t actually border any other bourough in Amsterdam, meaning that the area is considered an exclave of the city. To many Amsterdammers, Zuid-Oost is synonymous with Bijlmer, a massive, modern neighbourhood that was built according to Le Corbusier’s architectural principles, and contains several impressive high-rise apartment blocks. Several important buildings are located inside Zuidoost, including Ajax FC’s home ground, Amsterdam ArenA , and the largest concert venue in the Netherlands, the Ziggo Dome.

The Best Areas to Stay in Amsterdam

15. weesperzijde.

This small neighbourhood in Amsterdam-Oost runs down the eastern side of the River Amstel and looks onto de Pijp. Its main thoroughfare, Wibautstraat, is named after a famous city planner and was once seen as one of the ugliest streets in Amsterdam. However, during the late 20th century, the area was altered by several urban development projects and is now among the trendiest parts of Amsterdam, partly due to the presence of Volkshotel – a stylish boutique hotel that features a restaurant , ateliers, and a rooftop nightclub. Though it is easy enough to spend entire weekends chilling out inside this all-in-one boutique hotel, there are many other hangouts spread around Weesperzijde.

16. Overhoeks

Although Amsterdam-Noord might seem far off, the area is actually only a few minutes away from the inner city and is accessible via a speedy ferry that leaves from Centraal Station . Overhoeks is the most southernly part of Amsterdam-Noord and is immediately recognisable due to its monumental skyline, which is framed by EYE Film Institute and A’DAM Tower . A design hotel is actually contained within this second building, alongside a subterranean nightclub and several high-end restaurants. Other nearby highlights include a wine bar-cum-cinema called FC Hyena , which screens the latest arthouse releases and is the only bar in Amsterdam with an indoor skateboarding halfpipe .

17. De Jordaan

This charming, residential neighbourhood in western Amsterdam is renowned for its welcoming atmosphere, photogenic townhouses , and impressive culinary sector. Despite being part of Amsterdam-Centrum, de Jordaan moves at a more relaxed pace than the rest of the inner city, making it perfect for quiet, urban getaways. Its central location also means that visitors based in de Jordaan can easily access many of the city’s main sites such as the Anne Frank House, Dam Square , and the canal belt by foot. Many of the neighbourhood’s hotels are located inside renovated canal houses. For instance, there’s Linden Hotel on Lindengraght, which overlooks two parallel canals, or Mr. Jordaan Hotel, which is housed within a spacious, 19th-century building.

Prettiest Places to Cycle

Ijburg is an architecturally stunning neighborhood on the eastern borders of Amsterdam. The area is actually built upon completely artificial ground, reclaimed from the sea in order to address Amsterdam’s housing crisis. This premeditated approach to urban planning means that Ijburg has a unique civic layout, and its streets are arranged around a grid system – a design which is almost unheard of inside the Netherlands. Ijburg has an impressive quota of modern architecture, and most of the neighborhood’s residential buildings recall Dutch neoplasticism . A magnificent bridge called Nesciobrug connects Ijburg with Amsterdam-Oost , which can be mounted by cyclists.

19. Oosterdok

20. amsterdamse bos.

Forest, Park

21. NDSM-werf

Bistro, American

After the Ij, the Amstel is the largest body of water in Amsterdam, and its banks are lined with a long list of historical buildings. The river begins in central Amsterdam and then flows southwards towards a small, rustic village called Ouder Kerk aan de Amstel . Inside Amsterdam, the Amstel runs past several important landmarks including the Jewish Quarter , Hermitage Museum , and Magere Brug, each of which is exceptionally photogenic. After around five kilometers, this picturesque route turns into a large park called Amstelpark , which features several beautiful flower gardens and a petting zoo, and then continues onwards beyond Amsterdam’s borders.

A Guide to Amsterdam Noord, The City’s Coolest Neighbourhood

  • Last Updated February 27, 2023
  • Netherlands , Europe

“A decade ago, you probably wouldn’t have wanted to hang around in this part of town.”

Our tour guide gestures all around him. It’s fairly hard to parse this part of Amsterdam with the neighbourhood that he’s describing, one that is downtrodden and dilapidated, plagued by crime, drugs and a multitude of social issues. I watch as scores of cheerful tourists hop off the ferry at Buiksloterveer and make their way over the IJpromenade to the artfully modern Amsterdam EYE museum or pose for joyous, cheesy photographs beside the Iamsterdam sign. Nearby, people sit for their morning coffee and brunch on the balcony of Tolhuistuin, overlooking the IJ towards Amsterdam central on the opposite bank. Amsterdam Noord has certainly changed in the last decade.

We’re stood outside  ClinkNOORD , where I am spending the next few days, on one of the regular walking tours of the Amsterdam Noord neighbourhood that is organised by the hostel. Opening in 2015, our guide gives Clink some of the credit for Noord’s regeneration. “Obviously, with tourists comes money, which means new bars, restaurants and tourist attractions, a lot of them catering to the youthful customers that a hostel brings.”

Clink occupies the imposing 1920’s brick structure that was once the laboratory of the Shell corporation. It has been stylishly refurbished to create space for hundreds of guests, incorporating many of the buildings original design features to create bustling common areas, a relaxing atrium, and the vibrant, lively ZincBAR where the hostel puts on regular live music, DJs, performances and social events.

the neighbourhood tour netherlands

Shell’s laboratory isn’t the only building that used to belong to the corporation to have been given a new lease of life in Noord’s regeneration. Just across a footbridge, over the canal from the hostel’s entrance, is Tolhuistuin, the former Shell employee canteen that has been transformed into a cafe, restaurant, event space, and cultural centre, hosting frequent art shows and gigs. Behind the venue, the empty land has been converted into a community park and garden, while at the front, dozens of people sit on the canteen’s upstairs balcony, sipping beers and cocktails with a view of Amsterdam’s Central Station on the other side of the IJ.

Next door to Clink, the 22-storey A’DAM Toren, opened in 1971 as home to Royal Dutch Shell, has had a multi-million euro refit and now boasts a rooftop observation deck, a swish boutique hotel, a nightclub and a selection of top-notch bars and eateries.

Separated from the rest of the city by the IJ river, Noord can feel a world away from the crooked, gabled buildings and ring of beautiful canals that define Amsterdam’s city centre. It’s an area filled with industrial warehouses and residential buildings owing to its maritime heritage that dates back to the 1600s. However, when shipbuilding and industry declined in the late part of the 20th century and much of Noord was left in a state of disrepair. Abandoned and tumbledown, Noord began to attract squatters and artists in the 1990s with the hipsters and creative industry soon following.

the neighbourhood tour netherlands

Now, decades later, Noord has been transformed into Amsterdam’s edgiest and coolest neighbourhood. It’s a place that is constantly evolving and where there’s always a new hotspot drawing in crowds from all over the city. No place epitomises this as much as NDSM, a former wharf and hub of the shipbuilding hub that has undergone a rapid transformation. We take the five-minute ferry back to Amsterdam Centraal Station and then hop another one over to NDSM. As soon as we hit land, it’s visible just how rapid the pace of change is here. Construction is going on all around us.

the neighbourhood tour netherlands

Originally settled by squatters, some of whom still reside here in an ‘artists village’ that is in the process of being moved to the far end of the wharf to make space for new buildings, although the artists that live here will be given land and a market in which to sell their art, it wasn’t long before hipsters and creatives moved in to utilise the cheap, abandoned buildings. Inside one NDSM hangar, you’ll find Kunststad (Art City), with studios for 200 artists and designers. Elsewhere, old office buildings have been converted into cafes and restaurants while even abandoned trams and old shipping containers have been modified to create venues – like Pllek, a restaurant with its own man-made beach that regularly hosts events on its outdoor terrace such as gigs, DJs and film nights – and in one case, a huge stack of them has been made into low-cost housing.

the neighbourhood tour netherlands

Throughout all the change and construction, the area’s artistic past remains. There is no better place in Amsterdam to see street art (the huge Anne Frank mural by Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra being the most notable) and while the small one-story building in the middle of NDSM with a large, illuminated ‘SEXYLAND’ sign perched on its roof may seem like it is more at home in the city’s Red Light District, it is actually a community-owned art and event space. Sexyland is a members’ club that has 365 co-owners, each of whom puts on an annual event, a different one on every day of the year. This can range from art shows to ping-pong, swing dancing to club nights at a weekend. The public can attend any of the activities by buying a month-long membership.

the neighbourhood tour netherlands

As we walk around, we watch workers constructing marquees and stages for the DGTL Amsterdam festival. Our guide explains that, because of Amsterdammer’s love of Techno, partying and lax attitude to drugs, the city hosts around 300 dance music festivals per year, which is pretty impressive for a city with a population of 800,000. The wide-open spaces of NDSM make it the perfect venue for these kinds of events and as we stand on an empty expanse of the wharf, looking back to Amsterdam over the IJ our guide explains “This view is one of my favourites that the city has to offer. It brings back memories for most Amsterdammers of a misspent youth, recovering here at sunrise after an all-night party, or having the time of their lives dancing at a festival.”

posing against an orange wall in NDSMs art spaces, amsterdam

The bohemian vibes of Noord continue as you head further east to the residential side of the neighbourhood. What was once, and still is to an extent, a working-class neighbourhood for shipbuilders, sailors and dockers is a pleasure to stroll around as it is much quieter and more peaceful than Amsterdam proper. Just a 10-minute walk from Clink, I manage to stumble upon Cafe de Cuevel, a former shipyard that is now home to a thriving community of entrepreneurs and artists. The aim of the owners is to revamp the contaminated land to create green working spaces for the neighbourhood’s creative businesses. The green, sustainable kitchen of Café de Ceuvel, built from salvaged maritime materials, is dedicated to clean technology and use of solar power and heat exchangers, as well as reuse its kitchen and toilet waste through treatment, composting and filtration. As well as providing delicious food, de Ceuvel also has an extensive programme of events such as recycling workshops, litter picking, pop-up shops, film screenings and parties.

Headings further still into Noord’s residential area, I find a group of industrial units that have been converted into a host of cool venues, sort of like a mini NDSM. Oedipus Brewing Co was the first to set up shop here and have gone on to produce some of the best craft beer that Amsterdam has to offer. Their converted warehouse taproom is one of the finest I’ve visited; spacious and brightly coloured with a suntrap terrace in the car park outside that quickly fills when the sun is shining. It isn’t the only brewery making waves in Noord though. Nearby, the smaller Walhalla brewery and taproom set up by local homebrewer Aart van Bergen, is one of the newest breweries to pop up in  Amsterdam’s prolific beer scene . Another fantastic spot is SkateCafe, which opened its doors in 2017, featuring a mini skate ramp as well as a bar and dining area.

the neighbourhood tour netherlands

Feeling a little tipsy from my visits to Walhalla and Oedipus, I stumble back towards ClinkNOORD for the evening, stopping for a rest on the steps of the space-age looking Amsterdam EYE museum. The sun is just starting to set over the IJ and throngs of tourists are milling around the Iamsterdam on the waterfront or stopping for sundowner cocktails on the balcony of Tolhuistuin. Amsterdam Noord seems to be thriving. While it’s true that just a decade ago I may not have wanted to hang out here, right now, its the best place to be in Amsterdam.

Where to Stay in Amsterdam Noord

Set within an old 1920’s laboratory on the bank of the IJ River Clink Noord manages to straddle the line between a designer hostel and huge backpacker hub fairly effortlessly. As with much of Noord, creativity is the theme and there is gallery space, a cafe, a bar, as well as programmes for visiting artists, bands and writers (paint, play or write and stay for free) which means guests are often treated to a free gig or exhibition.

Unlike in many sterile mega hostels, ClinkNoord buts on a huge number of events that encourage a social atmosphere; There are daily walking tours, yoga and meditation sessions in the beautiful, astroturfed atrium, Dutch beer tasting sessions in the psychedelically decorated, glow in the dark Zinc Bar, as well as meet-ups for solo travellers.

On a practical side, the hostel offers minimalist-industrial style dorms that range from 4 – 16 beds in mixed and female-only varieties as well as private, double rooms with their own en-suite bathrooms.

Where to Eat and Drink in Amsterdam Noord

Café de ceuvel.

This Bohemian, eco-conscious, waterfront cafe is built on the site of a former shipyard from salvaged material, such as 80-year-old bollards from the port of Amsterdam and a lifeguard pavilion from Scheeveningen. The larger De Ceuval organisation that oversees the area aims to revamp the contaminated land to create green working spaces for the neighbourhood’s creative businesses. The green, sustainable kitchen of Café de Ceuvel serves local beers and delicious vegetarian food where many of the ingredients on the menu are grown in the on-site aquaponics greenhouse. Other examples of their dedication to clean technology are their use of solar power, heat exchangers, and reuse of its kitchen and toilet waste through treatment, composting and filtration. They hope to inspire everyone around them to go green. As well as providing delicious food, de Ceuvel also has an extensive programme of events such as recycling workshops, litter picking, pop-up shops, film screenings and parties, making it the perfect hangout in Amsterdam Noord.

Oedipus Brewing

Founded by four local friends with a passion for all things beer, Oedipus has managed to really shake up the Amsterdam beer scene since launching in 2010 and has gone on to become, in my beer-loving opinion, the city’s best brewery. As well as brewing the usual IPAs and sours, Oedipus has won over legions of craft beer fans thanks to serving to strange creations such as Thai Thai (a sweet, spicy beer tripel brewed using Thai ingredients) and Mannenliefde (lemongrass and Szechuan pepper Saison). Even if you aren’t a huge fan of beer, their bright and colourful taproom is worth a visit in itself. Hidden away in an industrial unit about 15-minute’s walk from Buiksloterveer ferry terminal, Oedipus’ headquarters is the perfect hangout, with plenty of outdoor seating and a kitchen throwing out juicy burgers from ‘The Beef Chief’.

Oedipus brewing Amsterdam Noord

Green Canteen

If you’re having a drink in Oedipus, it’s worth popping across the road to Green Canteen. The eatery is small and intimate with limited seating but their menu of hummus, falafel and middle eastern fare is a good alternative to the burgers served in the nearby brewery’s on-site kitchen. They’re also leading the way in eco-friendly cuisine: Not only is the veg seasonal, but it is also mostly stuff that suppliers have written off as surplus.

Set up by Aart van Bergen, a local homebrewer that has since made his passion into a business, Walhalla is one of the newest breweries to pop up in Amsterdam’s prolific beer scene. Drawing inspiration from all manner of ancient religions and mythologies, they have such divine offerings as Loki, a stunning golden IPA, and Osiris, a Belgian Saison. Their brewery taproom, a cosy little spot hidden away in the eastern side of Noord, is open Friday to Sunday.

the neighbourhood tour netherlands

Located in an old, corrugated iron hangar near to Stichting Skatepark on the corner of a small, artificial peninsula in Amsterdam-Noord, Hanger has an impressive, industrial-chic dining room and terrace that overlooks Amsterdam’s southern harbour. With an interior designed by styling expert Stella Willing, you will find an unusual combination of rusting metal sheets, vintage chandeliers and mirrored walls, all with a slightly tropical flair. Apparently, they like to describe their design as ‘a beautiful mess’. The food is a little more expensive than most other places listed, but it may be worth stopping by for a cocktail or two.

Tolhuistuin

Originally housing the Shell worker’s canteen between 1941 and 2011 when the company occupied the entire Overhoeks area, the Tolhuistuin is now a restaurant, bar and event space. There are gigs and concerts taking place most evenings and the upstairs is home to a huge cafe with a balcony that is perfect for sunset cocktails while looking over the IJ towards central Amsterdam.

the neighbourhood tour netherlands

Sitting right on the banks of the River IJ in NDSM, it’s possible that Pllek is one of the best-located drinking spots in Amsterdam. It may just look like a stack of shipping containers piled haphazardly on the edge of the shipyard because that is essentially what it is, but step inside and you’ll find an airy, industrial-chic interior with furniture made from salvaged shipping and maritime junk. Step out through its glass facade and you’ll find yourself on a man-made beach, complete with sun loungers and picnic benches, giving you the impression that you’re on the Costa Del Amsterdam. As well as serving food from morning until late, Pllek regularly hosts events on its outdoor terrace such as gigs, DJs and film nights. Even if you don’t plan on seeing much else in Amsterdam Noord, it is worth coming here to hang out on a sunny day, although the beach can get pretty full once summer hits.

Noorderlicht

One of Amsterdam’s more unusual cafes, even by NDSM standards, Noorderlicht (which translates into English as ‘the Northern Lights’) is essentially a huge greenhouse filled with colourful, mismatched thrift store furniture. They have a good selection of local beers and a range of vegan and vegetarian dishes, although the menu is pretty omnivorous. Upstairs you will find a cool hangout space with pool tables but the real attraction of Noorderlicht is its waterfront terrace. Noorderlicht also occasionally hosts live music on weekend evenings.

Things to See & Do in Amsterdam Noord

Eye film museum.

The modernist design of the EYE Film Museum looks like an angular, futuristic spaceship that has landed on the banks of the IJ. Originally opening in 2012 directly across the water from Amsterdam Centraal, the iconic white structure is an attraction in itself, but step inside and you’ll find that it contains 4 cinemas, a permanent, interactive film museum on the bottom floor and a space for rotating exhibitions. As well as new releases, the museum’s archive has more than 37,000 titles, When I was there, the space was taken up a fascinating exhibition on film’s depictions of conflict zones titled A Tale of Hidden Histories (featuring work by Broomberg & Chanarin, Omer Fast, Chia-Wei Hsu, and Meiro Koizumi). The EYE’s restaurant and cafe are built on a stepped terrace with enormous floor-to-ceiling windows that offer one of the best views in the entire city.

the neighbourhood tour netherlands

NDSM Wharf is a fairly odd place. Arriving by ferry from Amsterdam Centraal, the first thing that you will probably notice is an abandoned submarine bobbing just off the shore, a Botel (that’s right, it’s a boat hotel) and a bunch of graffiti-covered, once abandoned all trams that are now people’s homes. Trams aren’t the only unusual accommodation in NDSM, there is also a crane that has been converted into the ultra-luxury three-room Faralda Hotel for anyone that loves heights and has money to burn, as well as student accommodation made from stacks of shipping containers. In fact, lots of things in NDSM are made from old shipping containers, including the bars and restaurants.

Dig a little deeper though and you will find some real gems in this once desolate, former industrial hub. Of all the areas in Amsterdam, this is possibly the most creative. You will find the city’s best street art dotted around the area (the world’s biggest street art gallery/museum is currently being built here) and inside one NDSM hangar, you’ll find Kunststad (Art City), with studios for 200 artists and designers. Festivals are regularly held in the huge outdoor spaces and many of the bars, such as Pllek and Noorderlicht host outdoor DJs and live music in summer.

A’DAM Lookout

Once the home of Royal Dutch Shell, the 22-storey A’DAM Tower has been restored and refurbished in recent years and now hosts restaurants, hotels, nightclubs and office space. Moon, on the 19th floor, serves up locally-sourced, seasonal food as it rotates to give a 360-degree view of the city. However, if you want to get even higher, the 13th-floor observation deck (€13 entry) includes Europe’s highest swing. Anyone that is feeling brave can strap themselves in, positioned at a terrifying height of nearly 100 metres above the ground, and swing over the edge of the building.

Nieuwendammerdijk

Although the industrial landscape of Amsterdam Noord may be a far cry from the pretty, gabled houses and canals of central Amsterdam, it does have Nieuwendammerdijk, a beautiful, long and narrow street of historic wooden Dutch houses, some dating back to the 1500s. The area was originally constructed when a new dyke and dam (hence Nieuwendam) were built on the site and fishermen, ferrymen, traders and shipbuilders decided to build their houses, warehouses and wharfs here.

Once a month, two of the huge, cavernous industrial buildings at NDSM Wharf hosts Europe’s biggest flea market. There are around 750 stalls selling second-hand clothes, shoes, antiquities, jewellery, books, and even furniture. Unfortunately, I was in the city at the wrong time of the month to see the market for myself, but I’ve heard that it’s perfect for bargain hunters. Entry costs €5 per person.

Noorderpark

Amsterdam is filled with a whole bunch of fantastic parks and green spaces, the most famous being the enormous Vondelpark near the city centre. It seems that the Dutch know how to do parks right, and whenever the sun comes out, you’ll find Amsterdammers heading straight there to catch some rays. Amsterdam Noord even has its own fantastic open space in Noorderpark. It was created by combining the area formerly taken up by two different parks (the Florapark and Volewijkspark) to form a green oasis as large as the Vondelpark. The park also hosts a number of events such as concerts and festivals.

How to Get to Amsterdam Noord

Free ferries run 24 hours a day every 10 minutes or so from behind Amsterdam Centraal station. For A’DAM Toren, Eye Film Institute, and Clink Noord, take the Buiksloterweg ferry (five-minute crossing). For NDSM, take the NDSM ferry (15-minutes).

This post is created in collaboration with Clink Hostels. I received a complimentary stay at ClinkNOORD, however, all views expressed are my own.

Through authentic Holland (port-to-port cruise)

We had a wonderful time on this enjoyable cruise in The Netherlands. The itinerary was perfect for our family. The ship's crew were all fantastic: efficient, friendly, welcoming and helpful. And even the weather cooperated. My only (minor) concern was that the information about where and when we could board the ship was not particularly clear, especially as we were traveling independently i.e. we were not met on arrival and escorted to the boat). Fortunately, the public transportation systems in Netherlands are so efficient that this was not a big problem.

King’s Day 2024

My King's Day experience with Yes-Trips in Amsterdam was absolutely incredible! From start to finish, the entire celebration was flawlessly organized, making it one of the most memorable experiences of my life. The atmosphere in Amsterdam on King's Day is electric, and Yes-Trips truly knows how to maximize the fun. Whether you opt for their full package with ESN associations, the budget-friendly campsite accommodation, or the exclusive cruise party, you're guaranteed to have a blast. I went for the full package and was blown away by the seamless transportation, comfortable accommodation, and expert guides who made sure we didn't miss a beat. The highlight for me was definitely the cruise party along Amsterdam's main canal. Dancing to great music while cruising past the city's iconic landmarks was an experience I'll never forget. Plus, the vibrant orange sea of people in the streets added to the festive atmosphere, making it a celebration unlike any other. Overall, I can't recommend Yes-Trips enough for anyone looking to experience King's Day in Amsterdam. Their attention to detail, friendly staff, and dedication to ensuring everyone has a fantastic time truly sets them apart. If you're thinking about joining the celebration next year, don't hesitate to book with Yes-Trips – you won't regret it!

Holland & Belgium Tulip River Cruise (Amsterdam - Brussels - Amsterdam)

The tour was an absolute dream. The itinerary was perfect and the ports were great. What made it extra enjoyable was the crew upon the MS Cruisivista. Especially Jessica, our cruise director. Already looking at other river cruises we can go on next year and bringing my mom. Thank you!

Tulip Time Cruise 2024 Tour

Tulip Time Cruise 2024

The crew, ship and meals were all very good. There was an issue with the wording of one of the tours that I paid an additional amount for and I will take it up with Avalon. Also with the room description I paid extra for the wall to wall windows. It was useless to have done that. Most of the time we were right next to another boat, or to a wall and there was no way we would even keep the curtains opened.

What people love about Fully Guided Tours in Netherlands

We enjoyed the nature and flowers and canals. The accommodation was good and the Fletcher hotels very peaceful in the country.
The tour of Holland was wonderful. Our tour director was great. Our driver was great. The weather was not so good. I think the heavy mist and rain made me ill. It was impossible to find any cold medicine in our busy schedule. Fortunately I brought some headache medicine with me just in case I needed it. I did not want to miss any of the scheduled visits but I was anxious to get home to deal with the symptoms.

"Understated beauty is an accurate way to describe Netherlands. A land of vividly colourful countryside, picturesque villages, and cities bursting with canals and rich with striking architecture"

John, Travel Director

Come face-to-face with Rembrandt's masterpieces

Come face to face with Rembrandt’s iconic pieces and immerse into the mind and soul of a true artistic genius. The Het Rembrandthuis Museum is the place where the Dutch multidisciplinary artist worked for many years, offering treasures that honor the depths of his talents.

Visit The Royal Palace in Amsterdam

The Royal Palace is an Amsterdam must do thanks to its opulent 17th century architecture. Admire the yellow stone exterior before moving inside where you can float across marble floors and glance up at the extravagance of the ceiling and chandeliers. Found on the west side of Dam Square opposite the war memorial, it is close to numerous other Amsterdam attractions.

Walk through the edgy port city of Rotterdam

Journey across the country and find the port city of Rotterdam. Gaze upon vintage ships at the Maritime museum and collect local trinkets from a variety of different retail stores, all while being surrounded by over 160 different nationalities and languages. Bold architecture and an idyllic waterfront location make this a city worth savoring.

Stroll through an enchanting wonderland of tulips

Find the endlessly beautiful fields of tulips in Keukenhof, a mere 40-minute drive from the Dutch capital. You will feel an immense appreciation for nature’s beauty walking through the colorful gardens, alive with petals during the months of spring. Take time to sit and take in the vision and scents, either beside a lake or near a windmill.

Gain insights into the tradition of diamond cutting

Find Europe’s oldest and most renowned diamond cutting in the Netherlands. Visit one of Amsterdam’s many factories and marvel at the art of cutting these sparkly rocks first hand. Coming to the country in the late 16th century, diamond cutting has become a long-standing tradition and part of the Netherland’s cultural fabric.

Our top 5 things to do in Netherlands

From the capital’s majestic Royal Palace to the wonderland of tulip fields found in Keukenhof, these are just some of the experiences we’ll share with you when you visit the Netherlands with Trafalgar.

The Rijkmuseum contains over 8,000 masterful pieces of art, many crafted by famous Dutch masters like Rembrandt, Vermeer and Hals. Treat yourself to a day of learning and inspiration and quickly realize why this is the most visited museum in the Netherlands.

Van Gogh Museum

Admire the expressive works of the Vincent Van Gogh Museum and honour one of the most prominent artistic figures of all time. Known for his erratic personal life and huge body of work, have an encounter with the Dutch artist in his homeland within the walls of his contemporary Amsterdam museum.

Anne Frank House

Journey to the soul-stirring home of Anne Frank whose diary uncovered the dark realities of Nazi occupation of WWII to millions of readers across the globe. Well preserved from its original state, you will feel an unnerving connection to this country’s heritage as you walk from room to room.

Best museums in the Netherlands

Fill your mind with intrigue and discover why this country has been home to some of the most brilliant artists in European history. These are just a few of the museums Trafalgar will guide you through, peeling back the layers of culture in The Netherlands.

Bitterballen

A treasured snack found in many cafés, the bitterballen is a deep fried bread ball filled with delicious meat and roux, cooked in rich beef stock with onion, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Dip in creamy mustard or enjoy on its own, either way, it’s addictive.

Stroopwafel

Be mesmerized by the Netherlands beloved waffle meets cookie treat of Stroopwafel. With a thin dough and sticky thick caramel filling, pair this fluffy treat with a warm coffee and a cool day, picked up from a street vendor offering various irresistible toppings.

When the indulgence gets too much, reach for stamppot, a traditional Dutch classic of creamy potatoes usually mashed with carrots, turnip greens, spinach, onions, and kale. Try it topped with smoked sausage like rookworst if you’re still feeling indulgent.

Best food in the Netherlands

The Netherland tempts the tastebuds with caramel filled waffles, deep-fried bread balls and extravagant fries, with an occasional pause for hearty nutrition in dishes like Stamppot. Uncover many culinary delights when you travel through the Netherlands with Trafalgar.

Tour the World’s Most Unusual Neighborhood Design

By Tim Nelson

aerial view of homes

As you wind your way through The Netherlands’ extensive network of canals, you’ll float by a whole lot of noteworthy buildings spanning from exemplars of low-country Renaissance style to architectural manifestations of modernism and the early 20th century’s De Stijl movement. Yet, for all the diversity that is Dutch design, few examples of it have inspired curiosity quite like an odd collection of concrete orbs found in one neighborhood of s-Hertogenbosch (colloquially known as Den Bosch). Though the buildings in the area may look like golf balls when viewed from the air, these Bolwoningen (“bulb houses”) are functional—albeit cramped—homes.

aerial view of homes

Aerial view of the Bolwoningen nearby more traditional homes

Far from some self-made sculptural oddity, the fifty Bolwoningen one willl find along a canal just south of the Meuse River actually represent a past vision for the future of affordable housing. The brainchild of Dries Kreijkamp, the Bolwoningen draw on his experience in both industrial design and sculpture in concert with his fascination of spheres.

view of home

The structures look more like extraterrestrial structures than housing.

But it wasn’t the novelty structure that convinced the Dutch government to support the project as part of its foray into experimental housing solutions from 1968 into the 1980s. Rather, the simple, sustainable nature of the lightweight, prefabricated homes meant they could be erected in as little as one day. By 1984, a mini-neighborhood of Kreijkamp’s Bolwingen had sprung up, standing out in stark contrast from the more traditional residences just across the street.

two people in a room

Inside, the Bolwoningen shows a small space with a surprising amount of natural light.

Though certainly eye-catching from the exterior, the reality of life inside one of these spheres made from cement and reinforced fiberglass may explain why the Bolwoningen have remained a curiosity rather than the new standard in prefabricated living. A cylindrical base serves as a combination entryway, storage, and utility area, leading upward to the sphere, which measures roughly 18 feet in diameter. The living quarters, which can accommodate up to two people, are subdivided into three small sections. A living and kitchen area sits at the top, with a separate bathroom and bedroom below. Pivoting circular windows across the sphere provide ample natural light and airflow to counteract the stuffiness of the close quarters.

woman inside room guitar

The living space of the sphere measures approximately 18 feet in diameter.

The Bolwoningen have remained rooted in place for nearly 40 years, but Kreijkamp’s vision was for these lightweight structures to be endlessly rearrangeable and transportable, possibly even floating above water. With Kreijkamp’s passing in 2014, however, they seem fated to stay put. Now, they function less as a model for living than an architectural relic and cultural curiosity.

Nevertheless, there’s something to be learned from the Bolwoningen. The need for simple, sustainable dwellings is certainly more apparent now than it was in the early ’80s. Even if aspects of Kreijkamp’s vision for housing leaves something to be desired, there remains much that forward-leaning architects can learn from his vision.
