Ben Stokes bowls during day two of the fifth Test
Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill both struck hundreds and combined in a burgeoning 160-run stand for the unbroken second wicket to put India firmly in the lead on day two of the fifth and final Test against England on Friday.
India, who hold an unassailable 3-1 lead in the series, have been in the ascendancy since bowling out England for 218 at the picturesque Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium.
Home captain Rohit got a life on 68 when Zak Crawley missed a sharp catch at backward short leg but that was as close as England came to a breakthrough before lunch.
India were 264-1 at the break with Rohit on 102, his second hundred of the series that included three sixes. Gill was the more aggressive of the pair, smacking five sixes in his stellar 101 not out.

India tour of Australia 2024-25 schedule leaked
India are all set to lock horns with Australia in the five-match Test series, later this month. As per the reports in ‘The Sydney Morning Herald, it is learned that the series between the two heavyweight teams will get underway in November this year.
The reports claimed that Optus Stadium in Perth will be hosting the first game of the series between the teams. It is learned that Cricket Australia’s decision to give the first game to Perth came considering the city’s rich cricketing history over the years.
Apart from this, the reason for giving Perth the first game of the series is the disappointment expressed by the Western Australia Cricket Association (WACA) over not being allocated a Test match in the 2020-21 series between these nations, which was one of the best in the history.
It is learned that after the opening Test in Perth, the focus will be moving to Adelaide, which will be hosting the second game of the series. The second match of the series between India and Australia will be a day-night affair and it will be the first time two teams will play a pink ball Test since 2021.
The third game of the series between India and Australia is likely to take place at the Gabba in Brisbane. The game is expected to be a cracker because of what happened last time when the two teams crossed swords with each other at the venue and saw the visitors winning the game and etching history.
The action then moves to Melbourne, which will be hosting the boxing day Test between the teams. The match will be played on 26th December before the series will conclude in Sydney with the New Year’s Test. Both Melbourne and Sydney have been hosting Boxing Day and New Year’s Tests as per customs of the Australian cricket calendar.
The series between the two teams will also be part of the ICC World Test Championship. Both India and Australia played in the final of the tournament last year and it saw the Pat Cummins-led side lifting the elusive Trophy by dominating India in England .
Cricket Australia is yet to finalize the schedule for the India series
The reports also claimed that Cricket Australia is yet to finalise the schedule for the series but the above-mentioned itinerary is likely to be followed. It will be the most anticipated series because of the history of how both teams have fared against each other.
During the last two tours to Australia, India have been extremely dominant as they have won both series. During the 2018-19 series, they registered their first-ever series win on the Australian soil. The team achieved the feat under the leadership of Virat Kohli.
In the next tour in 2021-22, India was nothing short of exceptional. Despite being battered and bruised, they under the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane won the series with the second-string team. They would be hoping to achieve the feat a third time on trot.

Heather Knight gives England 1-0 lead
A swashbuckling half-century from Heather Knight was instrumental in England taking a 1-0 lead in the T20I series against New Zealand. While Tammy Beaumont fell early for 15, Sophia Dunkley set herself up for a long haul at the crease after smashing six boundaries. However, she fell for 32 by the end of the eighth over, forcing England to rebuild. Knight then joined forces with Maia Bouchier to revive the innings as the duo ended up adding 91 for the third wicket. While Bouchier couldn't accelerate as much as she would have liked, Knight was fluent in her stay at the crease as she hammered 63 before departing in the penultimate over as England finished with a strong 160 on the board.
In reply, New Zealand were handed a blow very early in the game as 19-year-old Isabella Gaze fell in the first over for a duck. Georgia Plimmer and Suzie Bates then added 60 for the second wicket but they allowed the required rate to climb up. Maddy Green's 14-ball 8 added to their woes as the onus was now on Bates to help the hosts get closer to the target. While she did hit a fifty, needing 71 from the final five overs proved to be too much for New Zealand as they fell well short of the target by 27 runs.
Brief scores: England Women 160/4 in 20 overs (Heather Knight 63, Maia Bouchier 43*; Jess Kerr 1/26) beat New Zealand Women 133/5 in 20 overs (Suzie Bates 65; Lauren Bell 2/29) by 27 runs
