While I love solo travel as much as the next person — and think Europe is one of the best places to backpack around — the continent is also a huge destination for tour groups.

When you think of group tours , you may imagine a horde of camera-clicking tourists wearing socks and sandals swarming off a massive bus, taking lots of pictures, and then moving on to the next site.

In the past, that image was pretty accurate.

But now? Not so much.

These days, the best tours have evolved and are much more nuanced and diverse, catering to all different age groups and travel styles. From hop-on, hop-off tours and river cruises to big bus and backpacker tours and everything in between, there’s a wide variety of tour options now.

No matter what kind of experience you’re looking for (or your budget), you’ll be able to find awesome and insightful tours to help you make the most out of your next trip to Europe.

I’ve taken tours offered by dozens of companies on the continent. Some were good, some bad, some great.

If you’re thinking of taking a tour around Europe — whether because it saves you time or money — here is a list of the best companies:

THE BEST DAY TOURS IN EUROPE

Pretty much every major city in Europe has a free walking tour. They are a fun, insightful way to orient yourself and learn about the history of a city. Plus, you’ll have access to a local expert who can answer any and all questions you have about the destination!

New Europe is one of the largest and best tour companies out there. Its guides are knowledgeable, and its tours cover all the major tourist sites. They also offer specialized tours, like food tours, day trips, and tours to specific historical sites (such as Edinburgh Castle or the Sachsenhausen concentration camp). You can find them pretty much everywhere in Europe. Just remember to tip your guides at the end!

Most tours will last around 3 hours. For their paid tours, prices start around 15 EUR per person and go up from there, depending on the duration of the tour.

Free Tours By Foot

Another free option is Free Tours By Foot . Like New Europe, they have qualified guides and a wide variety of themed tours in over 30 destinations across the continent. Chances are you’ll be able to find a tour with them (or with a company affiliated with them) in every major city around the continent. Tours usually last around 3 hours, so make sure you wear comfortable shoes. Since they offer free tours, make sure you tip your guide at the end.

They also have partnerships with other tour companies so you can find more specialized options here as well. For example, they have a great beer tour of Paris (as well as a macaroon tour if that’s more your style). Those tours aren’t free (they cost around 60 EUR per person) but they are a great way to get a specialized insight (as well as to try some amazing French beer and desserts!).

If you’re looking for something a little more in-depth, my favorite walking tour company in Europe is Take Walks , which can be found in London , Athens , and various cities in Spain and Italy .

What makes these food, art, and history tours so special is that they get access to places others don’t, like the Louvre after hours, secret spots in the Vatican or Versailles, etc. The guides are incredibly well informed, so you’ll learn a ton of information. If you’re looking for a paid walking tour company, Walks is the best.

Their tours are usually around 3 hours, though they also have a few full-day options as well. Expect to pay at least 60-90 EUR per person. Be sure to book in advance as well, as many of their best tours (like their Sistine Chapel early entrance tour) sell out fast!

For foodies, my go-to tour company around Europe is Devour . They run delicious food tours in Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, Ireland, the Netherlands, and the UK. From wine tours to dessert tours to filling hours-long food tours, takes you to local joints that the tourists don’t know about. Their guides are passionate and knowledgeable so you’ll not only feast on delicious eats but you’ll learn a ton about the food and culture too!

Most tours last 1.5-3.5 hours and generally cost around 50-110 EUR per person.

Europe travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do you need a visa to travel to Europe?

Whether or not you need a visa to travel to European countries largely depends on the nationality on your passport and whether the country you're traveling to is part of the Schengen Agreement.

This agreement sees 26 European countries offer visa-free travel to nationals from 60 other countries including Australia, the United States, Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom. 

To determine whether the country you're traveling to requires a visa, head to the   Schengen Visa's information website.  

What is the internet access like in Europe?

You can easily access the internet in most countries in Europe, generally in capital cities and other major towns. Internet access may be limited in regional locations such as national parks or remote villages in some countries. 

Can I use my cell phone in Europe?

You shouldn't have a problem using your cell phone while traveling throughout Europe, however, your international data roaming will need to be activated in order to connect to the internet or send messages (unless you connect to the local wi-fi). 

What are the toilets like in Europe?

Modern, flushable toilets are the standard in the majority of European countries. 

Can I drink the water in Europe?

Tap water in most European countries is considered safe to drink unless it is otherwise marked. 

When should I book a tour in Europe?

There is no 'best time' to travel around Europe as most countries offer plenty to do in every season of the year.

T he most popular time to travel to countries like Greece, Italy, and Croatia is during the summer months (June, July, and August) so you can make the most of each country's respective beaches and warm weather.

C ountries such as Iceland, Norway, and Sweden are known for their snowy landscapes and northern lights sightings during Winter (December, January, and February).

How much does a Europe tour cost?

A tour in Europe can vary depending on the countries you want to visit, the style of tour, and how long you want to go for but you can expect to pay anywhere between USD$1,000 to USD$5,000, with most tours around USD$2,500. 

Is tipping common in Europe?

Tipping isn't as prevalent in Europe as it is in some other countries and definitely isn't expected, but if you like the quality of service you've been given at hotels, restaurants etc then a tip is always appreciated. 

Are credit cards widely accepted in Europe?

While credit cards are accepted in all European countries (especially in capital cities and other larger cities), smaller cafes or local run businesses may not have EFTPOS machines so it's always best to carry around a little cash to cover these expenses. 

What is ATM access like in Europe?

You should have no problem finding ATMs in most European cities. 

What currency will I need on a Europe tour?

The official currency of Europe is the Euro (€), however, only 19 of the 28 countries in the European Union use this. Countries that still use their own currency include Norway, Switzerland, Belarus, Croatia, Denmark, and Sweden. 

Is Europe safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Europe is considered a reasonably safe continent for LGBTQIA+ travelers with plenty of countries openly accepting, welcoming, and embracing the community.

This is evident in large capital cities such as Paris, Berlin, Madrid, and Vienna.

Some countries still hold traditional religious beliefs such as Belarus and Poland so a degree of caution should be taken when travelling around cities and remote regions in those countries.

Will I need a socket adapter for Europe?

If you plan on traveling to multiple countries throughout Europe then purchasing an all-in-one, worldwide adapter is the safest way to go.

I f you don't want to do that, your safest bet is to buy an adapter that uses C or E/F-type plugs as most European countries recognize this. 

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

The tours are usually quite active but the company are moving away from their traditional 18 to 39 age range.

Whoever’s on the tour with you, you know they’ll be up for a laugh and keen on authentic experiences – just like you! We love the ‘London to the Mediterranean on a Shoestring’ and ‘Discover Moorish Spain’ tours, but these are just a couple on a long list.

If you’re bored of going to cities, traipsing around museums and then never finding the best nightlife, then a Contiki tour is perfect for you. It specialises in providing lifelong travel memories for people between the ages of 18 and 35 – young, adventurous people who want to have a lot of fun while exploring new places.

It’s all about spontaneity on a Contiki trip, not lengthy itineraries planned down to the last second. You might have already guessed this from the name, but Intrepid Tours is definitely one of the best European tour companies if you’re looking for fearless adventuring (in a supported context, of course!). Its brand is all about ‘real-life experiences, so expect big detours from the beaten track!

As most tours have a maximum of 10 participants, you’ve got a lot more chance to get close to the local culture and way of life than you would with massive groups in coaches. You’ll use public transport and stay at independently run accommodation, all with plenty of free time. Be warned: if you like things to be super-planned, steer clear!

There are no official age limitations although the average travellers are aged between 18 and 45. Group tours. They usually conjure images of busloads of tourists descending on a destination with cameras dangling from their necks and fanny packs snug around their waists. There’s also a perception that they offer cookie-cutter experiences (at inflated prices) and should be entirely ignored by intrepid independent travelers — especially in Europe .

That couldn’t be further from the truth.

Today’s tour companies often feature small groups, highlight authentic and unique experiences, are mindful to leave a positive impact on the communities they visit, and use local guides to give you insider insights. In short, they are nothing like the generic excursions of yesteryear.

While I’m an avid solo traveler, I actually love group tours.  

My first international trip was on an organized tour, long before I knew anything about long-term travel. It was a great way to get my feet wet and was just what I needed to get me hooked on travel by giving me the confidence to branch out on my own. 

But even for more experienced travelers, group tours have a lot to offer: you meet people, learn from an informed expert guide, and go to places you normally wouldn’t be able to.

These days, the best tour companies in Europe have something for everyone — no matter what kind of experience you’re looking for (and what kind of budget you have).

But with so many options, picking the right tour can be overwhelming. In this post, I’ll break down what to consider before you book one so that you can save time, save money, and find the best tour for your next visit!

How to Pick a Tour Company In Europe

1. think about what you’re looking for.

Before you start your search, take a moment to figure out where you’d like to go, what you want to do, and how much you’re willing to spend. These parameters will help you narrow down your search and more easily identify the companies that meet your needs.

Are you interested in an active vacation? Maybe a cycling holiday through the Balkans appeals to you. 

Avid foodie and wine connoisseur? A weeklong excursion through France may be just perfect. History buff? Book behind-the-scenes walking tours that provide insider access to historic sights.

The possibilities are endless, so spend some time reflecting on what you want to do and how much you want to spend, as there are tours for every budget.

2.  Look at Group Size and Intended Audience

Group size and composition will have a major impact on your trip. I suggest looking for tours with 15 participants or fewer. These can sometimes be more expensive, but you’ll have a more intimate and in-depth experience with better access to your guide. 

Another things to consider is the tour’s intended audience, as this will determine who you’ll be surrounded by for the duration. While this is less important for day outings or cooking classes, if you’re going on a multiday tour, you’ll be spending a good deal of time with other people, which will have a significant impact on your experience. 

For example, if you’re a quiet luxury traveler and the tour ends up being filled with budget backpackers looking to party the week away, you might not enjoy your trip. 

The audience for the tour may be self-explanatory by looking at the website (be sure to scan the FAQ), but if you’re not sure, don’t be afraid to email and ask.

3. Review the Itinerary and Pace

One of the benefits of taking a tour is that you usually get to pack more into the time frame than you might as a solo traveler. After all, that’s part of the benefit of going on a group tour — you don’t have to do any of the planning or figure out transportation. You may well also get access to sites that you wouldn’t on your own.

But while you want to get your money’s worth, you also don’t want to be shuttled from one activity to another without time to take photos and enjoy the experience. While you naturally want to see a lot on your trip, look for tours that prioritize quality over quantity. 

For day trips, make sure you know exactly how much time is spent in transit and how much is spent at the actual sights you’ll be visiting.

For multiday trips, down time is important, not only so you can rest, recharge, and soak up the destination, but so you can do any activities or see any sights that are important to you but aren’t included. So I’d suggest picking a tour that does just a couple of big activities per day. 

If the tour goes to multiple destinations, make sure that you have at least a couple of days in each city, especially if you’re traveling significant distances to get to each one. You don’t want to spend most of your time in transit.

4. Determine What’s Included

In addition to the up-front cost of the tour, you’ll want to find out what’s actually included so that you can budget for additional expenses. Being constantly surprised by unexpected costs while traveling will dampen your enjoyment of the trip.

Find out the following: 

• Is airfare included? (It’s usually not.)
• Is pickup from your hotel or the airport included? 
• Are any meals included or just some? What about drinks? 
• If there are optional activities, do they cost extra?
• Do you have to pay a single supplement if you’re traveling alone? 

Read over the information provided to see exactly what is covered and what isn’t, so you can budget accordingly. Most reputable companies make this very clear. Many also include estimated budgets for additional expected expenses (such as how much a local meal costs, so you can get a better idea of what to budget for food). 

5. Learn About the Company’s Commitment to Responsible Travel

The pandemic’s abrupt halt of global travel illuminated just how dependent many destinations are on tourism, as well as the detrimental effects that it can have when left unchecked.

One of the benefits of choosing a group tour is that, with a responsible company, the sustainability legwork has been done for you. 

Here are some questions to ask when evaluating tour companies: 

• Do they hire local guides?
• Do they avoid unethical activities (like getting up close to or interacting with wild animals)?
• How do they support and give back to the community?
• Do they prioritize environmentally friendly accommodations? 
• What are the company’s overall sustainability policies? 

Responsible, sustainable travel is the future , so let’s all be a part of it by prioritizing companies that include these practices by default. 

6. Read Some Reviews 

Once you’ve found some tour companies that you’re interested in, it’s time to peruse some online reviews to see how the company holds up to its promises. 

TripAdvisor and TrustPilot are both good places to start. From there, ask around in any travel groups you’re a part of, whether that’s offline through personal connections or online communities like Facebook groups and The Nomadic Network .

Just remember to take reviews with a grain of salt and try to read between the lines (sometimes people complain about things that were clearly out of the company’s control). Also, people are more likely to take to the internet and complain if something went wrong rather than if everything went right.  

Additionally, if you read travel blogs for reviews, make sure the person actually paid for the tour themselves. While there is nothing wrote with people getting free trips, if someone was paid (or were given the tour free), their perspective might be biased. So keep that in mind when researching. 

7. Check the Fine Print and Book Your Trip!

Once you find a tour, don’t wait — book it before it sells out! If you’re going on a small-group tour, then there are by nature a limited number of spots available. 

But before you hit the “book” button, take a moment to read the fine print, check the cancelation policies, and do your due diligence. Read over the tour company’s FAQ, and if you have unanswered questions, send them a quick email.

Some policies to look out for:

• Payments: Is there a deposit, and is it refundable? Is there a payment plan, or do you need to pay the entire cost up front?  
• Cancelations: Are full or partial refunds available? Is there a cutoff date after which you cannot be refunded? 
• COVID-19: Are participants required to be vaccinated or tested beforehand? What if you or someone else falls ill on the trip?  
• Insurance: Are you required to take out travel insurance for the trip? (Even if you’re not, I highly recommend that you do .)

My Recommended Tour Companies

Over the past 14 years of traveling Europe, I’ve tried countless tours, from short free walking tours to multiday excursions. Here’s my list of the best tour companies in Europe to help you get started:

• New Europe – New Europe runs daily walking tours in many major European cities, from Amsterdam to Valencia. They’re great for getting a quick introduction to a place on your first day in a new city. While they are technically free, don’t forget to tip your guide at the end! 
• Take Walks – I’m a history nerd, so I love walking tours that dig beneath the surface. Whenever I want a behind-the-scenes look at a destination, I go with Take Walks. It uses expert local guides, so I always learn a ton. I can’t recommend them enough!
• Devour – As a devout foodie, I love eating my way around a new destination. With offerings in major culinary destinations like Spain, Italy, France, and Portugal, Devour is my go-to company for foods and cooking classes. You’ll learn about the history and culture behind each dish while you dig in — the best of both worlds! 
• Get Your Guide – This is not a tour company per se but rather an online marketplace that lists all kinds of day trips, tours, and multiday excursions offered by different providers (though it is starting to launch its own offerings). It’s a good place to start if you’re looking for ideas and inspiration.
• Intrepid – This is my go-to multiday tour company. Intrepid’s options are fun and educational, but the company is also a leader in sustainable and responsible travel so you know that you’re having a positive impact by booking one of its tours. I’ve been on a few in various parts of the world and always have an amazing experience.

What to Pack for a Tour in Europe

Packing for a tour in Europe will vary greatly depending on where you’re going, the season in which you’re traveling, and what you’ll be doing. 

That said, I always recommend a minimalist packing style, especially in Europe, where you can readily find everything you need should you forget something. You really don’t need a lot when you travel, and you never need as much as you think. 

I almost always fly carry-on only, which prevents my luggage from getting lost and makes getting between destinations much, much easier. I usually travel with a 40L backpack and a day bag and encourage you to do the same.

Here are a few things I recommend that taking with you no matter the tour you plan on taking: 

• Backpack : Europe is filled with cobblestone streets made for picturesque strolls — not suitcase wheels. You’ll thank yourself by opting for a backpack (my favorite is the REI Flash 45 ). 
• Smaller day bag : Bring something that you can put your daily essentials in while exploring. 
• Power adapters/converters : Unless you’re coming from elsewhere in Europe, you’ll need these. Bring a few.
• Toiletries : Bring the basics (toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, deodorant, shampoo, etc.) and a quick-drying towel (they take up less space than regular bulky towels). 
• Clothing : Remember that you can do laundry while on the road, so even if your tour is longer, pack clothing for 7-9 days and then wash them when needed. In addition to your daily outfits, bring one nicer one (for an evening out at a classy restaurant or performance) and extra socks (how do those things always disappear?!).
• Water bottle : The tap water is potable in most of Europe, so you can usually fill up in hotels or restaurants to stay hydrated and reduce your reliance on single-use plastic. I carry a LifeStraw bottle , because it comes with a built-in filter, so the water I put in it is drinkable no matter what.
• Kindle/book/journal : If you’re on a multiday tour, chances are that you’ll be spending some time on the road. While you’ll often spend this time chatting with other group members, sometimes you might need some time to disconnect! 

The list above is what works for me, but be sure to tailor it to suit your own needs!

I love solo travel — but I also love group tours. They give you access to expert guides and behind-the-scenes experiences you could not otherwise have had and connect you with a group of potential new friends that share your love of travel (I still keep in touch with some of my fellow trip-goers to this day).

Our guide Marty was simply the best as was our driver Kris who made traveling throughout Eastern Europe easy! Hotels were spotlessly clean - basic but we were quite comfortable and happy. Amazing group of fellow travelers - we had loads of fun. We would do another tour with Marty and Kris anytime. I did a 17 day tour last year of Eastern Europe which started and ended in Vienna. I found our tour director Justine very informative, helpful and went the extra mile to make sure we were looked after. The local guides were knowledgeable and passionate about their cities. The optionals were great enhancers to the tour. Hotels were four stars and above. We were provided with currency charts, basic sayings for each country. I had a blast !

Our tour director was Brian Ridley-He was amazing-such a wealth of knowledge,very friendly,flexible and accomodative.Made the tour even more pleasant because of that. We did the tour in September Started 16th September 2017 and finished on the 30th.Budapest to Vienna. Started off with a celebration dinner at the popular Gundel restaurant in Budapest,which was excellent.

Dubrovnik to Vienna; Gems of the Balkans & Central Europe

This was a great tour, we were able to see a lot of places in the 7 days. Sokol the Tour guide was fantastic, he made the tour great. The meals and hotels included were all excellent. It was great value for money. We had a very good experience and loved it.

Eastern Road (End Berlin, 13 Days) (12 destinations)

This was a great tour made wonderful by our tour guide Zdenka. She knew these countries so well, she wanted us to see everything possible and she made it happen! Our bus driver, Gaspy, kept us safe and on time. Would recommend this tour, you learn so much and the countries visited were so beautiful and welcoming. This is the first time that Globus gave us a couple small, quirky new hotels that were not comfortable. Please Globus stick to regular hotels that have great staff. if the hotels are far from city center please give us transportation there and back on our afternoons off whenever possible.

Saw so much in a short time! Ten countries in 15 days! Had a very busy schedule to accomplish all we did, but it was worth it. The activities were varied, with great optional excursions offered.
