Two things from the team site today: Tuesday’s roster moves were options to Omaha for outfielder Tyler Gentry and RHP John McMillon .

Anne Rogers took advantage of the rare opportunity to dig into Spring Training Statcast date on Cole Ragans’s game :

The max 99.5 mph velocity from Cole Ragans was more of the same from the Royals starter looking to build on his breakout second half in 2023. Ragans averaged 97.3 mph on his heater Tuesday, and that was actually down slightly from the triple digits we’ve seen in the past. Things didn’t go as smoothly for Ragans in the beginning of his outing as the Rockies tagged him for four runs on six hits with a walk and two strikeouts. But the way he finished his outing is what he’d like to build on, when he worked a quick and clean third inning and needed four pitches to get two outs in the fourth before Chris Stratton took over. “The mechanics in the first inning especially felt a little off,” Ragans said. “Kind of came out of my hip. And then I changed some things with my hands that kept me a little more stacked. But I felt good. I got ahead of guys. It was more so just the putting away of guys.”

Preston Farr at Farm to Fountains classified Tyler Gentry’s option to Omaha as “an expected demotion with another chance to prove himself:”

For Gentry, it’ll be yet another chance to prove himself. In 2023, he took the trip to Omaha to start his season and stayed there all year. In the first half for the Storm Chasers, Gentry slashed a pedestrian .231/.336/.383 with an 11.7% walk rate. Then, after the All-Star Break, he took off. From July 14 through the end of 2023, Gentry slashed .289/.422/.483 with a .194 ISO and a 17.9% walk rate. If he can start 2024 anywhere near that level of production, the latest stop in Omaha will prove to be a more temporary one. For the Royals, the outfield is stocked full but lacking experience. Former Top-100 prospect, MJ Melendez, seems like the highest upside option after he saw an impressive turnaround over last season’s second-half. He’ll join Velázquez and Renfroe in the mix as the presumptive starters for Opening Day. Beyond those three, Kyle Isbel looks to have the Opening Day center field spot locked down. With Gentry now optioned, the final outfield spot on the 26-man roster looks to be a battle between Drew Waters and Dairon Blanco.

Kevin O’Brien at Royals Reporter makes an updated prediction of the Opening Day pitching staff . David Lesky did the same at Inside the Crown.

An endorsement from Jake Eisenberg for taking an afternoon nap while listening to him on the radio:

A day game Old Man Nap is a luxurious way to spend an afternoon.

It seemed like Dylan Cease would remain with the White Sox for at least the start of the season, but the Rangers and injury-plagued Yankees are reportedly still inquiring.

Darryl Strawberry got a heart attack for his 62nd birthday, and is recovering .

Yesterday was a quirky baseball anniversary:

Where will QB Justin Fields end up ?

At Defector, Stefan Fatsis (who has written a book about Scrabble players ) wrote about the Patrick Mahomes of Scrabble, Nigel Richards :

Nigel—one name, like Serena or Michelangelo—went viral in 2015 after winning the French world championship even though he didn’t speak French. He inhaled some large chunk of the 386,000 words on the Francophone list, and did it in a mind-boggling nine weeks. That same year, he won a tournament in Bangalore, India, with a 30-3 record. In one of those games, Nigel extended ZAP to ZAPATEADOS (the plural of a Latin American dance). In another, he threaded ASAFETIDA (a resin used in Indian cooking) through the F and the D. Those words likely had never been played in Scrabble before, and likely won’t be again.

Is TikTok going to release a dedicated photo app ?

Speaking of social media, here’s a piece at Cosmopolitan about the real-life implications for the kids who grew up on mommy vloggers .

I can personally and professionally vouch for this kind of drain clog remover thingamabob . For basic hair clogs in bathroom sinks and tubs, it’s such a good first thing to try, and won’t damage your pipes like Drano. Super low-risk, with high reward potential. You can also re-use them a bunch of times, even though they’re marketed as a disposable product.

Today’s OT question: have you ever had a scare that turned out absolutely fine? Could be health, climate, or anything. How did the see-saw of emotions about it affect you?

Ghana Tours & Travel Guide

Ghana Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Located in the heart of West Africa, Ghana isn't as rich in wildlife as is East Africa or southern Africa, but it provides plenty of opportunities for cultural exploration and ecotourism.

The first country in sub-Saharan Africa to regain its independence from colonial rule, Ghana is a stable democracy with friendly people, historic sites, thriving market towns, sandy beaches, and some wildlife viewing opportunities as well. It's an indispensable stop on any West Africa tour.

Top Stops on a tour of Ghana

Most tours of Ghana will stop in these three major cities:

Accra  is  Ghana’s capital,  which is known for being large and chaotic, but also extremely lively and colorful. The streets are crowded with the bustling humdrum of daily commuters, but also musicians, acrobats, and small shop owners selling their goods.

Some of the main attractions in this city include the  National Museum , which has one the best collections of African art on the planet, the Black Star independence arch, and the Osu Palace.

Elmina is Ghana’s city on the sea -- its architecture a mix of colonial and modern, and its shoe lined with hundreds of  colorful fishing vessels , called pirogues. Despite Elmina’s bright appearance and lively, thriving fish market today, the city did not always look this way.

One of the must-see attractions in Elmina is the Elmina Castle, a UNESCO heritage site, and the first slave holding station in West Africa. As there are no signs in the Castle, it is best seen and experienced on a guided tour, where you can truly understand the significance of the place.

Kumasi, the  ancient capital of the Ashanti Empire , is an important stop on any trip to Ghana. Known was the heart of the Ashanti culture, Kumasi is a great place to see and purchase genuine Ashanti crafts, in no small part because of it boasts the massive  Kejetia market , the largest market in all of West Africa.

When you need to take a breath of air outside of the city, take a drive to visit to Lake Bosomtwe - a lake inside of an ancient crater - which is just outside of the bounds of Kumasi.

The Ashanti Kingdom

Prior to colonialism, the Ashanti Kingdom was a West African state that existed where modern day Ghana currently lies. The state was composed of smaller chiefdoms, and the language spoken was Akan.

The state was formed at the same that Europeans began to visit West Africa, and the Ashanti became an important trading partner of the Portuguese. This allowed them to amass considerable wealth.  Gold  was the kingdom’s primary export in the 1700s, though by the early 1800s, this became slaves.

The Ashanti begant to trade captives for luxury items and firearms, and this led to chaos within the state. Eventually, this weakened the Ashanti empire, and Great Britain was able to annex it.

Today, the Ashanti are a  distinct ethnic group  with a known diaspora in the Caribbean, particularly in Jamaica (resulting from the slave trade). As a result, many African Americans and Afro-Caribbean tourists choose to visit Ghana to better connect with their origins and their past. One popular stop on these forms of tours is Elmina Castle, the first trade port in Sub Saharan Africa.

Despite their troubled political past, the Ashanti people have a  rich and vibrant culture , and this also takes center stage on many tour packages to Ghana. This can be explored formally, for example, on a visit to Ghana’s National Museum, or on your guided tour as you guide explains the fascinating Ashanti religion.

Often called the “Gateway to Africa,” Ghana is known for its  traditional craft making , in particular: its textile, brass work, wood carvings and beads. If you travel to the Eastern region of the country, make sure you have the chance to visit one of the country’s infamous mud-and-stick mosques, and hear a song played on the Gyil, the Ghanaian version of a xylophone.

5 Top Beaches in Ghana

Africa travel doesn’t always scream beach getaway, with the majority of travel focused on safaris, wildlife, and the mysterious archaeological sites of Egypt. However, there are several tucked away places along Africa’s coasts with some of the most beautiful beaches in the world: Madagascar, the Seychelles, Cape Town, and of course Ghana.

When you travel to Ghana on a tour, the beach scene is sure to be a stop on your itinerary. A large portion of beaches in Ghana are in close proximity to Accra. Here are some of the top:

1. Bojo Beach - This small beach is attractive for how secluded and quiet it is. Only accessible via canoe over the Densu River, Bojo is great for people who want to get a way for a bit and enjoy a truly relaxing beach getaway.

2. Kokrobite - For some the heavy tourist scene at Kokrobite might be a bit too much, but travelers flock here for the classic rastafarian and reggae culture. If you enjoy a party atmosphere and meeting people from around the world with similar interests, this is the perfect beach for you.

3. Labadi Beach - One of the more touristy beaches in Ghana, Labadi beach can be a bit crowded, but the crowds come for the many activities, food options, entertainment and beautiful ocean views. If you can put up with the less “authentic” feel, Labadi beach is great for a lively beach day or afternoon.

4. Ada Beach - At the estuary of the Volta River, east of Accra, you find Ada beach. With the thatch roof tables and several activities this is a great destination for families seeking a non-touristy beach that still offers nice amenities. The beach is still large enough that the crowds aren’t overbearing. At Ada beach you can go water skiing, yachting, fishing, and even observe endangered marine turtles.

5. Fete - Despite being the closest beach to Accra that is suitable for surfing, Fete beach is far less touristy than some of Ghana’s other beach destinations. Though this may change as travelers begin to discover the historic Fort of Good Hope and explore the local fishing village of Senya Beraku.

Is Ghana Safe?

Today, Ghana is a stable democratic country, though it’s modern history has not been without internal strife. In both the rural areas and cities, travelers are advised not to display items of value.  Pickpocketing  is the most common offense, and women especially should remain aware of their surroundings as purse snatching is also commonplace.

The people in Ghana are very receptive and welcome to tourists. White travelers may notice a heavier insistence on providing papers and identification around the borders, and may also get some curious attention is the less touristy areas.

Sometimes tourists wonder whether or not  public transportation  is a safe choice. Transportation in Ghana can be unreliable which is one reason going on a tour is advisable, though it is not necessarily unsafe.

Some general tips are to avoid traveling at night, especially by public transport, and be particularly aware of your surroundings in tourist areas, or establishments frequented by expats -- these places are occasionally targeted for pickpocketing or robbery.

Lohanu Ukulele Review (2022 Edition)

In this review, I’ll be taking a look at Lohanu’s three top models: the LU-T tenor, LU-C concert, and LU-S soprano.

Lohanu makes some of the best-selling, best-rated ukuleles on Amazon, but do they live up to the hype?

A few quick notes:

  • This review is based on my impressions of the tenor-sized LU-T, but most of the information should apply to the smaller LU-C (concert) and LU-S (soprano) sizes
  • I purchased a new LU-T for this review on Amazon using my own funds. The ukulele in the pictures is the actual instrument I received
  • This review is part of a series on Amazon’s top-selling ukuleles

Lohanu Ukulele Review Summary

Lohanu ukulele review full body image

My tenor-sized Lohanu LU-T is a nicely built ukulele that plays well and sounds great. After spending some time the uke, I feel it’s a very good value and for the most part deserves its place as one of the top-ranked ukes for sale on Amazon.

Based on my hands-on impressions and the reviews of other customers, I think most players would be satisfied with a Lohanu. The good quality and low price point make it ideal for beginners who want a nice starter uke or seasoned players in search of a good backup or travel instrument.

What I Like

  • Fit and finish are great
  • Playability is good right out of the box
  • Sounds nice
  • Lifetime warranty and responsive, Canada-based customer service

Potential Drawbacks

  • Gig bag is just OK
  • Included plastic picks are pointless

Build Quality

The LU-T’s construction is tight and clean. Fit, finish, and attention to detail are shockingly good considering the price of the uke. The uke’s light satin finish is evenly applied, and looks/feels great. I couldn’t find any glaring issues.

Lohanu ukulele rosette closeup

The quality of my Lohanu is much, much better than many of the super-cheap ukes I’ve tried over the years. It’s incredible what a difference an extra $50 can make!

My only minor gripe is that a couple of my tuning machines had “tight” spots where I could feel a bit of resistance as I tuned up the uke. Not a dealbreaker by any means, but still worth mentioning.

Lohanu ukulele back - angled

Some touches and features that jumped out at me:

  • Braceless arched back provides structural support while improving tone
  • The top, back, and neck are all bound , meaning they have a decorative white strip of material (probably plastic) running along the edges. This little feature gives the uke a bit more of a refined look and is something you don’t always see on ukes in this price range
  • Nut and saddle appear to be made out of TUSQ , a composite material that simulates bone. TUSQ is harder and denser than the cheap plastic pieces used on many budget ukes, and it transfers more of the string’s vibrational energy into the body of the uke for a better tone.
  • I liked the laser-engraved headstock logo and simple rosette. I also thought it was neat how the “label” inside the soundhole is actually a laser-engraved piece of wood.
  • Strap buttons come pre-installed. Many players don’t use a strap so this isn’t a huge deal, but if you ever decide to use a strap it’s nice to have strap buttons already in place.

Lohanu ukulele heel - closeup

Lohanu has a great customer service track record, so if you receive a ukulele with an issue just contact them and see what they can do. In the age of Amazon, smart companies will do everything they can to avoid those negative reviews!

I really like the sound of my Lohanu. It’s warm, sweet, and harp-like. I attribute this to its light, tight construction and minimal finish.

Lohanu ukulele bridge

While it doesn’t have the rich, resonant voice of a $1,000+ solid koa ukulele, it’s not reasonable to expect that from a beginner ukulele. Considering the price, I have no complaints about how the LU-T sounds.

If you want to learn more about uke sizes, I’ve written a whole article on the subject .

Playability

My Lohanu was comfortable to play right out of the box. The action (string height) was at a nice middle-of-the-road height, so it was easy to play without any fret buzz.

Frets were smooth and even. Notes rang out cleanly up and down the neck.

Lohanu headstock - front and back

At some point I’ll probably lower the action slightly at the nut by deepening the slots a bit, but that’s just a personal preference.

Lohanu ukulele gig bag - full

All Lohanu ukuleles include a padded gig bag with a pocket and a single shoulder strap.

The bag is well made but has minimal padding. It’s certainly better than the wimpy fabric covers included with many cheaper ukes, but if you expect to do any major traveling you might want to invest in a heavy-duty bag or hard case ).

Lohanu ukulele gig bag - closeup

Accessories & Extras

Lohanu’s ukuleles all come with a handful of accessories, including a strap, extra strings, a tuner, and some picks.

  • The strap is simple but well made. As I said before, many uke players don’t use a strap, but it’s still nice to have the option.
  • The extra set of Aquila Nylgut strings is a nice add-on because at some point you’ll need to change strings. I also think Aquilas are some of the best strings you can get. My one complaint is that the strings aren’t marked with tags or color coding, which might make things a little harder when it comes time to install them.
  • The digital clip-on tuner is easy to use and works well. A battery is included.
  • The plastic picks are a little silly since almost nobody uses this kind of pick on a ukulele. A felt pick would have made more sense, but most people just use their fingers (which is what I suggest doing).

Customer Service & Lifetime Warranty

As I mentioned earlier, Lohanu has an excellent record when it comes to customer service. The Canadian-based company seems legitimately committed to making every customer happy, especially in situations where a ukulele is shipped with problems or defects.

All Lohanu ukuleles have a lifetime warranty against issues related to craftsmanship and materials. There isn’t a whole lot that can go wrong with a basic uke in this price range, but it’s nice to know you’re protected if something were to happen down the road.

Just a note, working with two ingredient chocolate isn't easy. For those of y'all complaining about how hard it is to mix the drinks.... just imagine how hard it is to make the drink. If you do get a drink (you should) be sure to shake the glass vigorously and ensure everything at the bottom is fully incorporated before enjoying. The lady who helped me was super nice and helpful. The one from New York, sorry not sure if I ever caught her name. She walked me through a flight and let me taste a few others. The KANAHIKU was definitely my favorite. it was super flavorful... hard for me to place the tasting notes but I wouldn't wanna spoil it anyways. Wish I could buy more but I'm not rolling in money... plus I have so much chocolate at home already. Cardamom milk was a pretty nice bar as well. I ended up getting the chocolate thai tea and man that was delish. There's a parking lot that's $1 per hour for the first 3 hours i think. definitely come visit when you can. also they do tours though they're a bit on the pricier side. should definitely do one of those.

Outstanding custom made candy and drinks, all local. Chocolate drinks, truffles, spices, all using cacao. Very expensive but absolutely delicious. It's a tiny store with only three little seats but it's very fun to come in and look at everything and then of course buy chocolate.

A small little shop inside Salt Kakaako offer local chocolate, the girl who works there is very friendly and explained to us about their chocolate. They offer free samples and you can try a lot of them. The chocolate is not cheap (like $18 a pack) but they are good quality and if we can support local business, why not? If you are chocolate lover, you should come and check this out.

Holy cow. You gotta check this place out. One of the best chocolates I've tasted. Also if you're looking to buy souvenirs, why not support a local small business where from bean to chocolate are all from O'ahu!? That's a no brainer for me. I already bought a few to bring to friends and family. They offered free sampling as well. No need to book. Just walk in. The lady was very nice and knew what she's talking about. If you're a true chocolate connoisseur who likes pure chocolate (without all the fancy flavors and gimmicks so you can really taste the chocolate), you'll love their kanahiku 70% (all from oahu) and big island 60 and 70%. They also have some creative flavors more for the milk chocolates if that's what you like too. Also they have a few drinks on their menu! True gem!

lohana tours reviews

i wanted to like what I wanted more than I did. I didn't get the chocolate bars because once you have chocolate with nuts, rice crisps, etc. you've experienced that. But they had the drinks and they seemed good. But upon opening them, one was way too sweet and the other one had cream or something at the top. It was hard to mix into cold chocolate. So I mixed the chocolates with my hotel room coffee and that was fine. I just wish that there was less sweetness and more flavors in their drinking chocolates. I'm not saying that they were horrible, it's just that I like the flavor of chocolate and that includes the bitter notes for me. And the sweetness overpowered it. Now, the person working there was nice-ish. She didn't offer me a sample and was pretty chatty with someone at the tasting window. I wish they would have sampled the drinks. There's a place out here that does that, and I've bought many chocolate drink mixes from them as a result. But, I'm glad that I went by and tried what they had.

Chocolate heaven for me.

Chocolate heaven for me.

A great place for chocolate lovers seeking authentic, Hawaii-made bars. We did the tour and it was very thorough and worthwhile, especially if you are interested in how chocolate is made, and how this particular shop makes their own chocolate in-house. Note: this chocolate is very high-end so it's truly for chocolate aficionados. (The tour is best appreciated by adults and maybe older children).

Photo of Joy F.

First class chocolate. Delicious, local and could be pricey but worth it. Was great to be offered a sample and everything I tried was decadent. I ended up with just a bar with the Kona coffee and I treat myself with a bite each day. Awesome location at one of my favorite places when we visit Kakaako within SALT.

lohana tours reviews

Good chocolate in SALT! All their bars are pretty pricey and I don't usually buy them on a whim, but the drinks are a delicious sweet treat. They come in very nice reusable glass bottles and my personal favorite is the chocolate chai one. The surrounding area has lots of tables to sit and enjoy your drink at, and SALT has a large parking garage where lonohana can validate tickets for.

I'm so happy I found this place! It's located at SALT Kaka'ako. They were giving free samples of their chocolate bar. We tried the the hibiscus one and I forgot the name of the other one but they were so delicious. I LOVE chocolates, maybe LOVE is even an understatement. The chocolates we tried weren't extremely sweet unlike the ones you'd find at a regular store. And they are also local made. They are a bit pricy, though. It was a hot day so we decided to try their drinks. We got the Chocolate Thai Iced Tea, not overly sweet and the hints of jasmine tea subtly hits you at the end. I didn't think I'd like it because I'm not in to flowery drinks but this one isn't overpowering. Definitely a must try! When I go back, I'll give the deep chocolate chai! I initially wanted that but the black tea will keep me awake, caffeine after 10am keeps me up! lol

Picked up some lovely gifts here. Gorgeous chocolate- also love the mold that produces a map of the islands on the bar. Such an elegant touch. not cheap- but well worth the price. They are also generous with samples. My friends loved their gifts. It's walking distance from the port- medium walk.

At the Kennedy Center, a fiery Rotterdam Philharmonic closes its tour

The young israeli conductor lahav shani led the dutch orchestra in a program that featured russian pianist daniil trifonov.

lohana tours reviews

There was enough excitement — and mystery — surrounding the appearance of Lahav Shani, chief conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic, that the audience burst into applause when a well-dressed gentleman strolled onstage to move a chair. (Granted, this was probably overdue; he really moved that chair.)

Shani, 35, striking and smiling, emerged shortly thereafter, inspiring thunderous corrective applause. Since 2018, the pianist and conductor has served as the youngest chief conductor in the history of the Rotterdam Philharmonic, 91 of whom were in town for the final date on a six-concert tour. Last year, it was announced that the Israeli conductor will take over as music director of the Munich Philharmonic starting in the 2026-2027 season.

At 26, Shani led the Vienna Philharmonic as an emergency substitute for Franz Welser-Möst in what amounted to a breakthrough performance , praised in Die Presse for his unflustered demeanor and lively music, “mit Gedankenfundament” (i.e., with a foundation of thought).

It’s a sharp appraisal of a first encounter with Shani, an energetic multitasker whose arresting physicality from the podium is both reserved and explosive: He balls up, he bursts out. The superheroic might he displays onstage is ever-tempered by its trusty sidekick, thoughtful modesty; it’s an instantly likable dynamic — whether he’s conducting the orchestra or spinning around to whip up the audience’s patchy applause between movements.

Monday’s program, presented by Washington Performing Arts, reflected the Rotterdam’s institutional profile as one of history’s most esteemed Dutch orchestras (founded in 1918), as well as its unofficial standing as the feisty younger cousin of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam (1888).

In Arvo Pärt’s 2013 “Swansong,” we heard the orchestra’s rich sonority. In Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 9 in E-flat Major (the “Jeunehomme,” or the “Jenamy,” depending on who you ask), we heard its deep absorption and understanding of classic repertoire. In a suite of 10 selections from Prokofiev’s “Romeo and Juliet,” we heard its flair for drama. In each piece, we were treated to a magnificent orchestra.

Inspired by words taken from a sermon delivered by the 19th-century cardinal John Henry Newman (“a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace at the last”), Pärt’s “ Swansong ” is an effective capture of the composer’s mix of the modern and the monastic.

The first thing I noticed — as oboe, harp and bassoon bloomed over subtly percolating pizzicato triplets — was the arrangement of the orchestra: the basses and cellos stage right and tucked in, the percussionists parted to opposite ends of the stage, the strings split into a deep stereo field. Such minor tweaks have a big impact in a boxy hall like the Kennedy Center, and the effect Monday was to allow the orchestra’s many talents to truly pop. More so than usual, I found myself tracking the sound around the stage like a tennis ball.

It was a beautiful take on the Pärt, Shani fortifying the composer’s sturdy structures while honoring his fondness for lightness — the soft fall of daylight through the stained glass of an old cathedral.

The Style section

Having heard Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov play works by only countrymen, including Rachmaninoff , Shostakovich and Prokofiev , I’d come to understand him as a hard player. I once described him as “ingot-fingered” in my notebook, but the phrase never made it out. But his weighty playing was notable only for his unlikely delicacy and fleetness, dispatched when needed with athletic ease.

On Monday, this ease characterized the guest soloist’s gentle mastery of Concerto No. 9, from his teasing emergence in the first movement, “Allegro,” to the rushing, cascading cadenzas of the closing “Rondo,” everything pulled off with a blend of authority, reverence and energetic musicianship. The orchestra made a fabulous partner to Trifonov, their buoyant rapport flush with a nearly flirtatious intimacy.

I loved those moments in the first movement when the strings seemed to catch their breath and/or clutch their pearls. I was frequently moved by Shani’s expressive dynamic liberties, the animation he allowed into the sound. And I was charmed by Trifonov’s sensitivity — like the fading repetition of a melody in the “Andantino,” the way you might recite someone’s name to remember it. This was a softer, more human Trifonov than I’d ever heard, and the musicians of Rotterdam met him where they needed to. (You could say they went Dutch.)

Following long and loud applause, Trifonov returned to the stage for a little more Mozart, the “Adagio” movement of his Sonata in F Major (K. 332) — played with a soft touch and slight pep.

Sharp. Witty. Thoughtful. Sign up for the Style Memo newsletter.

Shani closed the program with 10 selections from Prokofiev’s “Romeo and Juliet,” a showcase of individual talents in the orchestra: There was especially beautiful solo work by concertmaster Marieke Blankestijn, clarinetist Bruno Bonansea, saxophonist Femke Ijlstra, and flutists Juliette Hurel and Joséphine Olech — as well as Shani’s ability to create dramatic punch in the moment, and craft an inviting narrative arc (however incomplete) over time.

By the death of Tybalt and the lovers’ tomb-side reunion, Shani had worked the suite into an appropriately torrid affair, the orchestra delivering thick gales of strings and blasts of brass of sometimes shocking force as the tragedy plodded toward disaster.

A bounding, buoyant full-orchestra encore of Prokofiev’s “March,” Op. 99 ended the evening on a happy note — its warm reception an assurance that the next time Shani comes to town, he won’t be mistaken for anyone else.

TaylorMade Spider Tour putters: Full reviews, club specs and more

Slide 1

The return of Spider Tour will no doubt get gearheads talking. As one of the most successful putter franchises ever produced, it’s easy to assume TaylorMade is simply running it back with a tried and true design. Yes, the original Spider Tour shape is making a comeback, but there’s more to the updated offering than a fresh paint job.

With TaylorMade’s True Path alignment system featured prominently on all  five  heads, designers set out to create distinctive shapes and weight setups for all swing types.

It begins with the OG:  Spider Tour . Built around the iconic shape, the head has a center of gravity (CG) location of 35mm from the face, 5,700 MOI — roughly 700 MOI than the previous version — and 29 degrees of toe hang on a small slant hosel. In addition to standard lengths, Spider Tour also comes in a 38-inch counterbalance model with a 17-inch SuperStroke 3.0 grip.

Made popular by Rory McIlroy,  Spider Tour X  was originally made to get blade users into a mallet. The compact shape offers a blade-like feel with TSS weights that are placed forward for more rotation during the stroke. A CG placement of 33mm from the face is 2mm closer than Spider Tour. This model also has MOI of 5,000 and 30 degrees of toe hang on the small slant hosel.

Spider Tour Z  is a new addition to the lineup and features a perimeter that sits low to the ground to help frame the golf ball for easy alignment. The TSS weights are located well forward to encourage more face rotation and a blade-like feel. It has a CG location of 29mm from the face, 5,050 MOI and 29 degrees of toe hang with a small slant hosel.

lohana tours reviews

TaylorMade Spider Tour Putters

With  Spider Tour V , designers removed the wings to give it a “streamlined look” at address. With the smallest head in the lineup, golfers can expect an abundance of face rotation through impact. Spider Tour V has a CG location of 27mm from the face, MOI of 4,900 and 32 degrees of toe hang with a small slant hosel.

While the  Spider Tour S  (available Spring of 2024) has an identical Spider Tour shape, it’s actually slightly larger than the original. By comparison, the Spider Tour S head is 3mm longer and 8mm wider. It’s also constructed at a heavier head weight and only offered in 35- and 38-inch lengths with a counterbalance grip. Spider Tour S has a CG location of 38mm from the face, 6,063 MOI and is face-balanced.

Take a peek at the face and you’ll find something familiar — with a twist. The molded Pure Roll insert, made from a combination of Surlyn and Aluminum, has been a staple since it was first introduced on the original Spider X.

The Surlyn delivers a soft feel at impact, but with the grooves angled 45 degrees downward, it is able to impart a consistent end-over-end roll at impact.

But here’s where the insert starts to deviate from the original recipe. Situated directly behind the molded Surlyn is a piece of Hybrar that was most recently used on the Stealth and Stealth HD irons to dampen vibrations — particularly on mishits — at impact.

The end result is an improved sound and feel across the entire face.

The lightweight steel wireframe construction allowed engineers to open up the playbook and move the TSS (TaylorMade Swingweight System) weights around to dial in the center of gravity location for each head and putting style.

For example, the weights are situated in the back wings on Spider Tour to increase stability; with Spider X, the weight was positioned further forward — just behind the face — for more face rotation.

The TSS weights also serve another valuable purpose by optimizing performance at each putter length with specified masses.

How to buy tickets for Phish Sphere and concert tour

Original standard Phish Sphere tickets are completely sold out through the band's website. They're also sold out through Ticketmaster (with the exception of a few pricey spots on April 21). However, tickets to the Sphere performances (including a 4-day pass) are still available through resale vendors like StubHub and Vivid Seats .

Tickets to the summer tour were announced at the end of February, which prompted a ticket request period that is still open on Phish's website . The ticket request period closes on March 11, and tickets go on sale to the general public starting March 15. Some resale tickets are available on StubHub and Vivid Seats now, and more will most likely be available on those sites after the general public sale starts.

How much are Phish tickets?

Tickets to see Phish at the Sphere are relatively expensive compared to other Phish concert prices, but you'll find cheaper tickets on the band's last day at the Sphere compared to their first three performances. On StubHub , the cheapest tickets to Phish's Sphere dates start at $296 (April 21). Vivid Seats offers similar prices, with tickets starting at $283 for the same date.

The cheapest possible standard original tickets for the summer tour that are sold through Phish's website right now are the GA Lawn tickets in Mansfield, MA (July 19-21) and Bethel, NY (August 9-11), which cost $62.30 each after fees. But by signing up through the ticket request forum, you are requesting the best possible seats, which could cost up to $119.45 in Massachusetts and $109.15 in New York.

Prices on resale websites are relatively comparable for the summer tour. On StubHub, the least expensive ticket prices start at $69 in Noblesville, IN, on August 2 and 3. Vivid Seats offers similar rates, with tickets going for $67 on the same dates. Some of the multi-day ticket packages offered on resale sites are a bit steep at the moment, but there should be more variety in prices once the general sale opens up later this month.

As of right now, Phish hasn't announced any international tour dates. Since reuniting, the band rarely performs outside the United States after their nationwide tours. But they have performed limited international engagements in the past, including in Mexico, so there's always a possibility of announcing additional dates outside of the U.S.

For Joe Biden, What Seems Like Age Might Instead Be Style

In this respect, the president has something in common with Beethoven, Wagner and Martin Scorsese.

  • Share full article

This photo illustration shows Joe Biden as a young politician in a suit and tie, his right hand on a microphone. Telescoping outward from his left eye are a series of overlaid squares of increasing size, each showing a fragment of his face over time. The final square is a color fragment from a recent photo of his face.

By A.O. Scott

Joe Biden, you might have heard, is old. I’m sure you have thoughts about that: about his mental agility and physical stamina, about his chances for surviving a second term that is scheduled to end two months after his 86th birthday. But presidential age isn’t only a medical or actuarial matter. It has a symbolic weight, a range of cultural meanings that have so far been overlooked.

Biden is 81. Donald Trump is 77. Biden’s age has become an issue in a way that Trump’s has not, because we are being asked, as citizen-critics, to judge the president’s late style. This is what we saw at the State of the Union on Thursday night.

In criticism, to speak of a late style is to highlight the way certain artists, at the end of their careers, enter a new and distinctive phase of creativity. Sometimes they produce a succession of masterpieces that both fulfill and transcend the promise of the earlier work: Richard Wagner’s final run of operas; the three major novels Henry James published at the start of the 20th century; the movies Martin Scorsese is making now . In other cases, an older artist will revisit familiar themes with a new sense of playfulness and freedom, like Henri Matisse making cutouts , Shakespeare bending the rules of genre in “The Winter’s Tale” and “The Tempest” or Bob Dylan reshuffling the pages of his own songbook.

And then there are those artists who swerve in a more radical, dissonant direction. “The maturity of the late works,” the German theorist Theodor Adorno wrote of Ludwig van Beethoven, “does not resemble the kind one finds in fruit. They are, for the most part, not round, but furrowed, even ravaged.” Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis and last string quartets often unsettle listeners with their dissonances and their unexpected harmonies.

The literary critic Edward W. Said, who wrote the book “ On Late Style ,” suggested that late work like this “has the power to render disenchantment and pleasure without resolving the contradiction between them.” Clint Eastwood’s recent films (notably “ The 15:17 to Paris ,” “ The Mule ” and “ Cry Macho ”), at once the corniest and the most avant-garde movies in his canon, fit this description. So do Philip Roth’s bitter, incandescent final books (“ Exit Ghost ,” “ Indignation ” and “ Nemesis ,”), which distill the prodigious inventiveness of his great middle-period novels into austere, jagged, sometimes bluntly funny meditations on sex, death and disgrace.

What does any of this have to do with Joe Biden? Politics is not art. But it is a craft, a vocation, and not many people have practiced it as long or as devotedly as Biden. In a profile this month in The New Yorker , Evan Osnos notes that “for decades, there was a lightness about Joe Biden — a springy, mischievous energy” that is no longer in evidence. “For better and worse,” Osnos writes, “he is a more solemn figure now.”

The word “figure” is well chosen; the Biden the public thinks it knows has always been, like every other politician on the national stage, a construct, a character, a persona. That “lightness” — as well as the tendencies toward verbosity, sentimentality and handsiness that were part of Biden’s brand as senator and vice president — was a matter of style. Which isn’t to say it was inauthentic. Quite the opposite; a politician’s style, like a writer’s or an actor’s, expresses a true self as it is filtered through the discipline of performance.

Trump’s style hasn’t changed. He is manifestly the same figure he has been at least since he entered electoral politics in 2015. That may be one reason that his age seems less relevant to voters.

But Biden, during his term in office and especially in the early stages of what will be his last campaign, seems different. In Osnos’s account, the “mercurial mix of confidence and insecurity” that defined his earlier persona has given way to a “confidence that borders on serenity.”

It’s not a complete break with the past. The nine-minute journey from the door of the House chamber to the podium on Thursday night, during which the president schmoozed, kissed, mugged and took selfies, was what you might call vintage Biden, as was the self-deprecating joke that kicked off the speech.

But Americans who remember Barack Obama’s salty, smiling sidekick or the shoulder-grabbing senator from Delaware might find the solemnity and the blunt combativeness of the 46th president disconcerting. The cadence and timbre of his voice are choppier and gruffer than before, his gestures more measured, his bearing stiffer.

Thursday night’s speech echoed some often-heard themes, and hewed in its long middle section to some of the chief requirements of the genre: the listing of accomplishments, the policy promises, the shout-outs to ordinary citizens in the room. What was startling, though, was the abruptness of the tonal shifts — the quick swivels from indignation to humor, from data points to grandiloquence — and the loose, energetic way Biden handled them.

Style in politics isn’t just stagecraft and character work: It’s the politician’s way of expressing an idea, presenting an argument, embodying a set of principles and beliefs and communicating them to the public.

For most of Biden’s public career, he was a creature of the status quo and, at the same time, a proponent of abstract ideals of progress, novelty and change. In other words, he was a typical politician, perhaps the typical Democratic politician of his era. His style represented a kind of exaggerated normalcy, like Top 40 AM radio or a prime-time sitcom.

First elected to the Senate in 1972, he was part of both the school desegregation backlash and the post-Watergate reformist wave. In the late 1980s, when he started running for president, he sounded at some times like a New Democrat, tacking toward a centrist, technocratic future against the orthodoxies of the past, at others like a preacher of the old-time New Deal religion.

He was a shrewd legislator who could be clumsy and undisciplined in public, generally well liked but not always taken seriously. By 2008, his long institutional experience, his establishment credentials and his gregarious temperament made him something of an ideal vice-presidential foil for the young, cerebral Obama. In the White House, Biden served as wise man and wiseguy, contributing gravitas or comic relief as the occasion warranted.

Until the 2016 election, the vice presidency looked as if it would be the last chapter in Biden’s electoral career — as late as he would get. But then the status quo that had defined him collapsed. Top 40 AM radio is a thing of the past. Network sitcoms are not what they used to be. American politics isn’t either. In 2020, Biden ran as an agent not of change but of restoration, a man who, by virtue of his familiar face and long track record, could be counted on to bring the country back to normal after the shocks of the Trump presidency, the Covid pandemic and the racial unrest that followed the murder of George Floyd.

That didn’t happen. Biden’s late style reflects his recognition of a rupture that he finds at once undeniable and intolerable.

Said wrote that “lateness is being at the end, fully conscious, full of memory and also very (even preternaturally) aware of the present.” This is where Biden, in his final campaign, finds himself now. He insisted to his listeners, both in the room and beyond it, that “history is watching,” a phrase that summons past, present and future into a single volatile moment.

At least since Lincoln, the language of American politics — Biden’s vernacular for more than half a century — has been both nostalgic and progressive, pointing backward to a lost golden age and forward to an ever more perfect union. The most successful politicians — Reagan, Obama — have managed to bind a mythic past and an idealized future into a single prophetic story.

Biden, in his early, unsuccessful presidential campaigns, attempted to articulate a version of that story, conjuring folksy images of middle-class, midcentury Americans and vague, rosy visions of an America whose best days were yet to come. He wasn’t especially convincing.

When he revisits those tropes now it is with a sense of their fragility. He uses them to frame the argument that American liberal democracy finds itself in mortal danger. The sturdy old rhetoric of striving families and the long struggle for justice is itself imperiled, and is part of what late Biden is trying to rescue. If this election is about the survival of democracy, he has cast himself not as its savior but — for the last time — as its most plausible representative.

Our Coverage of the State of the Union

In a raucous state of the union address, president biden sought to reassure americans that at 81, he is ready for a second term..

Biden’s Performance: The president was feisty   and displayed a newly found solemnity and blunt combativeness . Republicans jeered  from their seats. And Democrats enthusiastically cheered their presidential nominee, even as a few aired their grievances about the war in Gaza .

A Contrast With Trump: In his speech, Biden launched a series of fiery attacks  against former President Donald Trump, a competitor whom he did not mention by name but made clear was a dire threat to American democracy  and to  stability in the world .

Middle East Crisis: During the State of the Union, the president announced the construction of a port to deliver aid to Gaza. That decision, as well as the  authorization of aid airdrops  on the territory, raised uncomfortable questions  about America’s role in the war.

Seeking a Tricky Balance: As he spoke to Congress, Biden tried to demonstrate that he could be tough on the border without demonizing immigrants .

A Rare Mention: Biden briefly referenced a topic  that he has often been reluctant to embrace: marijuana. His words could signal a move toward promoting the efforts he has made to liberalize cannabis policy.

Style Choices: Democratic women in suffragist white , Marjorie Taylor Greene in MAGA red. The sartorial statement-making on the congressional floor was clear .
