Containing music originally from our long out-of-print 2012 Original Series Box Set, these exciting volumes utilize the same restored master as that acclaimed release, but feature new packaging by Dan Goldwasser, along with brand new, exclusive liner notes by film music writer and Trek historian, Jeff Bond. This groundbreaking, iconic music, from one of television’s most acclaimed and beloved series, is now again available for fans everywhere!

Vol 3 of the 1701 Collection focuses on the Trek TOS music of renowned composer Fred Steiner, with the “Star Trek Theme” by Alexander Courage, and contains original music from the classic episodes WHO MOURNS FOR ADONAIS?, MIRROR, MIRROR, BY ANY OTHER NAME, THE OMEGA GLORY, ELAAN OF TROYIUS, and SPOCK’S BRAIN, along with SECOND AND THIRD SEASON LIBRARY CUES, MAIN and END TITLE VARIATIONS and more. Produced by Lukas Kendall, Neil S. Bulk and Jeff Bond, restored by Chris Malone and mastered by Doug Schwartz, this limited edition 2-CD release of 1701 units, as well as forthcoming volumes of this series, illustrate how the original Trek series scores not only teem with action, adventure and drama, but how they are infused with deep emotion and the greatness of the human spirit. Such characteristics have kept these richly orchestrated tracks vital and relevant decades beyond their original recording.

Just seven months after launch, the hugely ironically named Star Trek: Infinite has proved it is anything but, as a developer blog on the Paradox site has recently announced that it will be receiving no further updates.

To put that into perspective the grand strategy game set in the Star Trek universe is still being sold for $30 on Steam despite its “overwhelmingly negative” recent reviews rating with many stating views along the lines of:

“Abandonware. Paradox should be embarrassed and issue refunds to all customers. This is a failure from top to bottom. It does not satisfy anyone. This game is not for anyone.”

“It seems like this game will go nowhere it’s just a cash grab avoid this game at all costs. There has not been a single update since I bought this game.“

“This game is an unfinished mess and seems to be largely abandoned by the devs. Could have been decent, if effort had been put into it. Unfortunately, it seems like they took their money and ran. I’d recommend you stay away. Buying this unfinished, mess of a game will only buy you disappointment and regret.”

Live long and prosper? Maybe not

The post reads , “Today, we bring news regarding the future of Star Trek: Infinite, a journey we’ve embarked on together with a lot of excitement.

Sadly, we must inform you that Star Trek: Infinite will not receive further updates.

Together, we’ve explored distant worlds, faced formidable adversaries, and created a community bound by a shared love for the Star Trek universe.”

Once again, the game launched on 12th October last year. The last update posted to Steam just two months after launch reads, “We are now in discussions on what our future roadmap looks like, what the game needs, and what type of resources we need to hit those goals. We are still in the early stages of this discussion however and don’t have any information to release at this time.”

It seems those discussions took a turn for the worse and now leave a bitter taste in the mouths of fans of one of the most popular sci-fi franchises of all time.

Requests for refunds can be found on the Paradox forums but many players on Steam would be long since out of the refund window and one post explains, “I submitted a refund request to Steam today, noting that development was canceled. I had less than 8 hours of playtime.

Request denied.”

Sometimes the games industry really is its own worst enemy.

Star Trek's Barbara Baldavin Dies at 85

Star Trek actor Barbara Baldavin, also known for starring in Medical Center, has passed away.

Star Trek: The Original Series actor Barbara Baldavin has passed away.

Per The Hollywood Reporter , Barbara Baldavin died on Sunday at her Manhattan Beach home due to congestive heart failure. Her passing was confirmed by her son, Marc D'Agosta. Baldavin was 85 years old.

Baldavin was known for playing two characters in Star Trek: The Original Series . In the first season, she appeared in two episodes in 1966 as phaser control officer Angela Martine. She played a significant role in the story with her first episode, which saw Starfleet come under attack during Angela's wedding to Robert Tomlinson (Stephen Mines) with Captain Kirk (William Shatner) presiding. Baldavin would later appear in the series finale of Star Trek as communications officer Lieutenant Lisa. The episode aired in 1969.

It was also through Star Trek that Baldavin met her husband, Joseph D'Agosta, who was a casting director for the series. Baldavin would later become forever associated with the franchise with dedicated fans, as Star Trek: The Original Series remains beloved. The show had only aired for three seasons before it was controversially canceled, though it would later be resurrected as a massive franchise that's ongoing to this day.

After Star Trek , Baldavin would spend six years playing Nurse Holmby on the 70s TV series Medical Center . That followed a guest appearance as a different character in the show's first season. In later years, Baldavin would make guest appearances on many other television shows, which included roles in programs like Adam-12 , Columbo , McMillan & Wife , Baretta , Charlie's Angels , Fantasy Island , Barnaby Jones , Quincy M.E. , Vega$ , Mannix , and Skeeter .

Baldavin had also worked as a casting director on a variety of television shows, such as Strike Force , Trapper John M.D. , Dynasty , Finder of Lost Loves , and Matt Houston . She also worked as a casting director for the movies Satan's Princess and Fallen Arches .

Baldavin hailed from Quincy, Massachusetts. She attended El Camino College and studied acting at the Lee Strasberg Institute. Born on Oct. 18, 1938, Baldavin happened to share a birthdate with Gilligan's Island star Dawn Wells. The two would later become good friends when Baldavin worked as an instructor for Wells' Film Actor's Boot Camp. Wells, who played the role of Mary Ann Summers in Gilligan's Island , passed away at the age of 82 in 2020.

Baldavin's survivors include her sons, Marc and Joseph, as well as her grandchildren, Casandra and Justine.

Discovery’s new captain is “tough to like but hard not to love”, says star trek director.

Star Trek: Discovery director Doug Aarniokoski: predicts fans will warm up to Captain Rayner just as they did to Captain Shaw in Star Trek: Picard.

• Captain Rayner in Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 may be abrasive at first, but fans will grow to love his driven and determined character.
• Director Doug Aarniokoski predicts that Rayner has the potential to become a beloved breakout character, similar to Captain Liam Shaw from Star Trek: Picard.
• Despite being rough around the edges, Captain Rayner is compared to Quint from Jaws - fans may not like him at first, but will root for him in the end.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5's new series regular, Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie), is a character fans may not like at first but they will grow to love, predicts director Doug Aarniokoski. Rayner was introduced in Star Trek: Discovery season 5's premiere, "Red Directive," as the Captain of the USS Antares. In Discovery season 5, episode 2, "Under the Twin Moons," directed by Aarniokoski, the abrasive Rayner is demoted for insubordination, but Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) offers Rayner a lifeline as her new First Officer aboard the USS Discovery .

Doug Aarniokoski was a guest on The 7th Rule podcast with Cirroc Lofton and Ryan T. Husk to discuss directing Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 2 . When Lofton insightfully compared Captain Rayner to Captain Liam Shaw (Todd Stashwick) from Star Trek: Picard season 3 , who fans disliked at first but became a beloved breakout character, Aarniokoski agreed that Rayner has the same potential. Doug Aarniokoski: He's amazing. [He's] new to the ship. New to the crew. New to the cast. Season 5, there's a lot of history backing into that. And it's so interesting that you saw a Shaw, if you will. I mean, look, Shaw is Quint. Quint in Jaws. You hate that guy. You hate Quint when he comes on the ship, and he's like, 'Let's catch that shark.'

Cirroc Lofton: Then you start easing onto him. You start liking him.

Doug Aarniokoski: You start going, ‘I understand who this guy is.’ This guy’s just driven. He’s got a directive. He’s got a target. He knows what he’s firing at. He knows what he’s doing. He’s got the experience. You may not like that he’s rough around the edges, but at the end of the day, he’s trying to catch the shark. He’s trying to catch the shark. And I think that Shaw had that in Picard, and I think you’re gonna see in Discovery, a character that is tough to like, but eventually you’ll see is hard not to love.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 may catch lightning in a bottle with Captain Rayner the way Star Trek: Picard season 3 did with Captain Liam Shaw. Thanks to clever writing by Picard showrunner Terry Matalas and his writers' room, and the gruff charisma of Todd Stashwick, Liam Shaw went from a character fans loathed to someone audiences are now demanding to see brought back to life. Shaw stole scenes from Patrick Stewart's Admiral Jean-Luc Picard and Jonathan Frakes' Captain Will Riker, and Liam's monologue confessing his backstory as a survivor of the Battle of Wolf 359 was one of Star Trek: Picard season 3's most riveting moments .

Rayner may end Star Trek: Discovery season 5 as one of the show's most popular characters.

Callum Keith Rennie's Captain Rayner has a different arc on Star Trek: Discovery , one seemingly of redemption and possible integration into the close-knit family of the USS Discovery. Like Shaw in Picard , Rayner enters Discovery immediately at odds with Captain Burnham and her methods. Shaw never became a subordinate to Picard the way Rayner does to Burnham, but the pointy-eared Kellerun brings a similarly challenging dynamic and intriguing friction to Discovery's captain and crew. Commander Rayner, as he is now ranked, is someone to keep an eye on, and Rayner may end Star Trek: Discovery season 5 as one of the show's most popular characters if Rayner is indeed like Captain Liam Shaw.

This new solid-state battery cell claims to set industry records, could offer over 1,300 mile range

A solid-state battery developer in China has unveiled a new cell that could help change the game for electric mobility. Tailan New Energy’s vehicle-grade all-solid-state lithium batteries offer energy density twice that of other cells in the segment, empowering the Chinese battery maker to hail the cells as a record-setter in the industry.

Tailan New Energy, aka Talent New Energy, is a private solid-state battery developer founded in Beijing, China, in 2018, where it remains headquartered in its research.

Per its website, it was “co-founded by lithium battery R&D experts and a senior domestic industrialization team, focusing on the technological development and industrialization of new solid-state lithium batteries and key lithium battery materials.”

The early culmination of those efforts has brought on plenty of accolades, including awards as a top five energy company in the electric mobility segment and a spot on China’s list of 100 future unicorns in 2023.

Given Tailan New Energy’s recently revealed specs for its latest solid-state battery prototype cell, it’s easy to see what all the hype is about.

Tailan unveils 120 Ah solid-state battery cell

Per a press release from the battery developer posted to WeChat this week, it has achieved several technological breakthroughs in all-solid-state lithium batteries, enabling a new prototype cell that offers ultra-high energy density that could very soon power passenger EVs longer distances on a single charge.

We don't need cars with 1300 miles of range, we need lighter EVs that have better efficiency that can do 300-400 miles. Making the battery 2/3 to 3/4 lighter and hopefully cheaper would be a significant boon to the EV auto industry. Imagine having a EV that weighs less than an ICE equivalent for similar range per charge/tank. Imagine being able to do an EV conversion on that classic car you love and still get decent range without having a trunk full of batteries.

According to Tailan, those breakthroughs pertain specifically to ultra-thin and dense composite oxide solid electrolytes, high-capacity advanced positive and negative electrode materials, and an integrated molding process that culminates into an impressive 120 Ah solid-state lithium metal cell. Based on its specs, Tailan New Energy states its solid-state battery cell sets industry records in both energy density and storage capacity.

In what Talian is calling a “world’s first,” the prototype cells house an energy density of 720 Wh/kg – more than double other cells currently being integrated into passenger EVs in China, like WeLion’s batteries for NIO , for example. Those 360 Wh/kg WeLion cells are expected to propel NIO EVs over 1,000km (620 miles) on a single charge later this year, so the potential of Talian New Energy’s technology to double that density in a similarly sized architectural footprint could reshape the mobility landscape.

Breaking down its new prototype cell, the battery developer shared its potentially record-setting numbers stem from high-gram capacity, lithium-rich manganese-based material in the positive electrode, an ultra-wide and thin lithium composite in the negative electrode enabling high cycle stability, and a proprietary high-performance oxide composite solid-state electrolyte, which it says addresses the solid-solid interface impedance problem plaguing current solid-state lithium cells. Tailan New Energy improves the migration ability of charged particles inside the cathode by building an efficient ion and electron transmission network, and uses self-developed interface flexible layer materials to effectively reduce the interface impedance while also improving the interface stability, achieving It has comprehensively improved the comprehensive performance of the battery and is expected to fundamentally solve the problems of battery life and safety anxiety of traditional lithium-ion batteries.

Tailan did not mention any specific plans for passenger vehicle integration yet, but did state its latest generation of all-solid-state battery cells are vehicle grade. If the company is able to scale this technology large enough for consumer vehicles while keeping prices down, it could easily double the range of the farthest-driving EVs on the road today.
