William Morris was at the forefront of the Arts & Crafts movement and London was home to him and many of the other artists of the movement. Their legacy can be seen in their homes that have been preserved, the artwork they left behind and the people they influenced. Join experts Professor Anne Anderson and Dr Scott Anderson on this exploration of William Morris’ London through visits to Emery Walker’s house, the William Morris Society and Lord Leighton’s Studio home, as well as walking tours and museum visits.

How many passengers in your party?

Day 1: Arrive independently at the Crowne Plaza Ealing Hotel from 15:00. This evening there will be a welcome reception, dinner with wine and talk by your expert host Professor Anne Anderson ‘William Morris: Life and Art.’

Day 2: Emery Walker’s House, the William Morris Society and Lord Leighton Studio House This morning you will explore the wonderfully preserved home of renowned Arts & Crafts typographer and printer Sir Emery Walker as well as the William Morris Society which is housed in the Coach House of Kelmscott House. Due to the size and fragility of both buildings the group will be split into smaller groups, rotating between the two properties and a walking tour of the area with Professor Anne Anderson and Dr Scott Anderson. Emery Walker’s House is one of the most authentic Arts & Craft homes in Britain including Morris & Co. wallpapers and hangings, ceramics by William de Morgan and Alfred and Louise Powell and Philip Webb furniture. The house is a true treat to explore. At the William Morris Society there will be an introduction to the property, William Morris and his life in London. This will be followed by time to explore their collections. After lunch (included) visit Frederic, Lord Leighton’s purpose-built studio house, one of the 19 th century’s most remarkable buildings. Explore this beautiful building and its collections with your expert host Professor Anne Anderson. Afterwards there will be a short walking tour of Melbury Road which was home to other prominent artists and their studios in the Victorian era. Return to the hotel for dinner and a talk by Professor Anne Anderson ‘Morris & Co. Decorating the House Beautiful’.

Day 3: Bedford Park, Victoria & Albert Museum, Holy Trinity Church The day will start with a walking tour of Bedford Park in West London which was created by Jonathan Thomas Carr, who was inspired to create an ideal suburb for the artistically inclined middle classes. He was also influenced by men such as John Ruskin and William Morris who lived in Hammersmith. Explore the area and hear about its history with Professor Anne & Dr Scott Anderson. From here travel into central London to explore the Arts & Crafts galleries of the Victoria and Albert Museum. There will be free time to get lunch (at your own expense) while there. In the afternoon head into the heart of Chelsea and visit the Holy Trinity Church in Sloane Square, dubbed the Cathedral of the Arts & Crafts Movement by Poet Sir John Betjeman. Within the church is the great east window, one of largest windows created by Morris & Co. From here walk along Sloane Street and around Cadogan Square hearing about those who lived in the area and contributed to the Arts & Crafts movement. Return to the hotel approx. 17.30.

Your Lecturer

Prof. Anne Anderson is a recognised authority on the Arts & Crafts movement and is Hon Research Fellow, Exeter University and the Huntington. A writer and broadcaster Anne was a senior lecturer on the Fine Arts Valuation degree courses at Southampton Solent University specialising in the Aesthetic Movement, Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau. Some of her academic papers have appeared in the Journal of the William Morris Society, Journal of the Pre-Raphaelite Society and many others. Her recent projects include reconstructing the original interiors of Lord Leighton’s studio-home and her television credits include BBC’s Flog It!

Dr Scott Anderson MA, PhD, FNAVA, ASFAV (Associate of the Society of Fine Art Auctioneers) Scott is a University Senior Lecturer in the History of Art and Design and is an Honorary Fellow of the National Association of Valuers and Auctioneers. He is a specialist in Victorian and Edwardian art, architecture and antiques and is a consultant expert for the BBC2 ' Flog It!'  programme. Scott is an Accredited Lecturer of The Arts Society and has lectured extensively to various societies, special interest groups and educational groups throughout Britain. He has extensive tour guiding experience in Britain, European locations such as Paris, Berlin, Vienna and New York. 

Please note that all our UK tours start and finish at the relevant hotel.  

You can normally check in from 3pm onwards but hotels will always be happy to store your luggage if you arrive earlier in the day.

Tour manager was very good. Tour Guide was OK .The Itinerary incorrectly stated we were going to Kelmscott Manor (this was incorrect , it should have read Kelmscott House). When several of us pointed this out to Scott he said he was not surprised, the itineraries are often wrong!

The highlight was the Emery Walker House. We had very good weather but what if it had been raining? Walking along the Thames Path near Emery Walker House and the Morris Society, round Bedford Park and Cadogan Square in the rain would have been very miserable. What was your back up plan? Personally I thought that there was too much time looking at the exteriors of buildings. Fine doing some to give the impression of the properties being built at the time and into which Morris was selling his wares. The walk round Cadogan Square could have been cancelled to allow more time at the V&A. I don’t think it added to the the day finishing with the hideous 52 Cadogan Square. By which time I had lost interest after being bombarded with name after name of William Morris contemporaries. In view of London traffic, I was pleased to finish the tour in Sloane Square and not back at the hotel.

Kudos to Scott for his brilliant leading of a new tour! Whilst Scott was imparting content, Steve used his unflappable demeanor to make sure everyone was included, participating, and not lost. A great whirlwind tour to parts of London I had never before seen!

Day 1 was excellent; Emery Walker's house has long been on my 'must visit' list and I now understand the difference between Kelmscott House and the William Morris Society HQ. The JH Dearle exhibition was also a treat. I've been to Leighton House many times and it's a favourite but perhaps didn't need to re-visit again - ditto the Green Dining Room at the V&A. However, with the exception of the fabulous WM window at Holy Trinity Church, I found Scott's architectural wanderings a tad self indulgent on Day 2. Perhaps this tour should be remodelled as covering the aesthetic movement in Victorian Art which would have given me a clearer overview of its itinerary, in advance.
