A story that's been brewing for some time. Immortalised in the name of one of our famous ales, 1845 is a year that will forever be Fuller's. It was then that the partnership papers of Fuller, Smith & Turner were officially signed, marking the start of something special for London's brewery scene.

griffin brewery tour

BREWED SINCE 1845

Our heritage.

The Fuller's Griffin Brewery is a special place. Not just to us, but to anyone who has ever enjoyed a pint of Pride. It's where the magic happens, where the malt meets the hops.

Our Beginnings

Our Beginnings

Beer has been made in this part of the capital for more than 350 years, dating back to the era of Oliver Cromwell. Back then, it was quite common for large households to brew their own beer. In the late 1600s, one such private brewhouse was in the gardens of Bedford House on Chiswick Mall. Another, a far humbler concern, was operating nearby at the cottage of Thomas Urlin.

When Urlin died, the property passed to his widow and son-in-law, a gentleman named Thomas Mawson, who stepped in to take up the reigns as manager. It was he who laid the foundations for a major brewing enterprise – buying The George public house and two adjoining cottages for £70, then later snapping up the brewhouse on Bedford House too.

The Griffin is born

The Griffin is born

The next notable owners of the brewery were John Thompson and David Roberts, whose six-year partnership suffered due to a series of legal wranglings. The duo predictably parted company in 1786 when Roberts left to join the Royal Household and Thompson soldiered on alone.

Eventually, the brewery passed to his sons, Douglas and Henry. It was under their stewardship in 1816 that the brewery first acquired the Griffin name and emblem. The Griffin had previously been the symbol of Meux and Reid's Brewery in the aptly-named Liquorpond Street, but when that business collapsed, the Thompson brothers moved swiftly to snaffle the name.

The adoption of the Griffin is a decision that's certainly stood the test of time, but other decisions by the pair were far less successful. Double dealings pertaining to mortgages led the brothers – and the brewery – to the brink of ruin. They needed investment, and fast

Fuller, Smith and Turner

Fuller, Smith and Turner

The Thompson brothers invited Philip Wood, brother of London's Lord Mayor, into the partnership, but Wood knew his money alone couldn't save the brewery. He too looked elsewhere for help. It came from one John Fuller.

Fuller was a wealthy country gentleman and he jumped at the chance to come aboard, investing primarily on behalf of his son. He soon bought one of the Thompsons out and, within a couple of years, found himself the majority shareholder at the brewery.

In 1839, John Fuller died and passed control to his son, John Bird Fuller. The younger Fuller moved quickly to make his mark, and by 1845 he'd severed ties with the Thompsons to take the reins by himself.

He sought investment and expertise from third parties though, and John Smith – already helping to run a successful brewery elsewhere – was invited aboard. He invested on behalf of his son, Henry Smith, and his son-in-law, John Turner.

So it was that Fuller, Smith & Turner came into being

setting the standard

setting the standard

Following incorporation, a wave of acclaimed ales came out of the brewery. Chiswick Bitter arrived on the scene in 1930. Into the '50s, London Pride took centre stage. Then, in 1971, ESB was launched. In 1997 our first Vinatge Ale was launched using the finest ingredients available which has continued to be our philosophy to this day

Awards started flowing as freely as the beer and we soon became the first brewery to win the CAMRA Champion Beer of Britain award with three separate brews.

The story continues

The story continues

That's far from the end of the story though, as we continue to invest and to innovate, building on our history and heritage to set new benchmarks for brewing and retailing as part of Asahi UK Ltd.

We have a great amount of Pride in our rich history – but there's plenty in our future too.

Fullers brewery

A very good day out very interesting

History of London beer starts here

Excellent tour guide delivering helpful information in a concise & friendly manner. Whilst the tasting is of course great the best thing is the buildings themselves, steeped in brewing history.

Michael Beasley

A great day out

I have always been a staunch drinker of fullers beer but did not realise how complicated it was to produce it . The tour of the Brewery was excellent

A lovely time at Fullers brewery

Good experience, an hour of talking about beer and 45 minutes of drinking free beer. What’s not to like!

Fantastic slice of history

Symone was an excellent guide, sharing her love of the building, its people and its history. Would recommend to anyone, not just beer lovers!

Very enjoyable trip.

As a London Pride drinker for most of my life it was really interesting to finally visit the brewery and find out how it is made. The sampling at the end was fantastic.

Fuller's tour

We had a great couple of hours being shown around the brewery by a very informative guide (John). Then to the best bit the tastings which was really good and not limited in any way.

Excellent brewery tour, full of history and beer

I've done loads of brewery tours, but this is one of the most interesting I've ever had the pleasure of completing. Our guide (John E) was excellent - incredibly knowledgeable, and tolerant of our constant questions! The brewing process is always interesting, but what set this tour apart for me was the history of the brewery, and the old hardware that is still visible to look at. Plus, the tasting at the end was delicious!

I went with my sons and son in law, on the tour. It was excellent. Really informative, with details of the brewery's history, methods, raw materials, etc. The tour guide was the head guide and really enthusiastic, with an encyclopedic knowledge of brewing and the brewery. Finally, at the end, we got to samlle their beers. Fabulous.

This is the second time I have been on this tour,as the guides are excellent. Out of all the brewery tours I have been on Fullers is the best.

A great tour and informative tasting

We had a wonderful tour with John E as our guide! He was incredibly knowledgeable and then guided us through a tasting of a few cask and keg beers.

Chris Strange

Great tour of Fullers famous Griffin Brewery

The tour was very well organised, professionally managed and informative. We were taken round the brewery following the whole brewing process from beginning to the end, the kegging and bottling. We even saw some of the old brewing equipment from 150 years ago! The two guides were friendly and knowledgable. At the end of the tour we had a tasting of the different Fullers beers and styles and following that we went to the shop and bar for a refreshing o pint! I would certainly recommend.

Pamela Byrne

Wonderful and informative tour

We went on the fullers tour and were very pleased with the whole experience. Booking was easy and we were greeted by Jason to get our pass and high vis jacket in an incredibly friendly manner. Lisa was our tour guide and we couldn't have asked for more. She was friendly, knowledgeable and humorous. The tastings at the end were great fun and I've come away with a new love of ale. Definitely recommend this tour.

Max hebington

Excellent afternoon!

A very interesting and informative afternoon, a must for those who love beer and the history and process of making it. Experienced and knowledgeable tour guide.

Great guide

Dave the tour guide was very good.

Griffin Brewery Tour

Excellent tour of historic brewery with so many fascinating facts. Learnt so much thanks to tour guide Lisa. Great time tasting all the beers and ciders at the end too

Great tour :)

Great informative tour and our tour guide Symone was brilliant :)

Informative and great tour, tasting was yummy and a fun couple of hours.

Peter Burling

Our guide (Jason), was very informative and certainly knows his stuff. Fullers brewery is a good mixture of old equipment mixed with the new equipment as you walk around the site. Much more interesting than we thought it would be.

Barry Griggs

Fun at Fullers

Tour was given by a very knowledgeable lady called Sue. She gave us a full history of Fuller Smith and Turner and a comprehensive overview of the brewing process. At the end we had as many samples as we could manage in the allotted time. It was an excellent way to spend a morning.

Great Tour & Tasting

Had a fab 2 hours at the Griffin Brewey, making use of a voucher from work for my 50th birthday last year. The tour was educational and interesting, our guide Colin was engaging, knowledgeable, humorous (at time!) and the beer tasting after was fantastic. Plus you get 10% off in the shop afterwards where the bottled beers are already very competitively priced.

Symone made our day!

Fantastic tour, great tastings, and brilliant guide!

We had a lovely time and our guide (Lisa) was phenomenal. Highly recommended!

Our Fullers Tour

Really enjoyed our tour, tour guide Sue was brilliant. A local Chiswick woman with a clear passion for the brewery and its beers. We went around the old parts of the brewery and the new parts and Sue explained the history and the brewing processes. We were a group of about 12. After about an hour and a half we spent the next and final half hour/45 mins in a bar area in their vaults where Sue poured out whatever beer samples we fancied trying and told us more about each one. Great stuff!

Fuller’s Brewery Tour

Excellent day out. Very informative and got to sample several different beers at the end of the tour

Was great to see the workings of the brewery!

Excellent Fuller's Brewery Tour

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed this tour. You don't have to be a beer lover to appreciate the history of Fuller's and their influence over time in the local community. All staff and our guide extremely friendly, and very generous with tasting session at the end.

Brewery Tour

Excellent tour. Friendly and accommodating staff. Symone our guide was great.

Sandra Graham

Fullers Brewey

Experience was extended from last year due to COVID, first time in London, had a brilliant time, was a present for my husband, would highly recommend, tour guide was John he made the tour very informative, funny, two hours went by so quick as so interesting had a lovely day out

Good site tour

A very interesting tour, but sadly the beer tasting session was limited to half an hour which wasn’t really long enough to sample enough of the beers on offer.

Great experience, worth the money

Really enjoyed the tour, John our guide was very knowledgeable. Tasting at end was we’ll received. Would have like to things in action, but that’s because we went at the weekend, so may have to return in the week at some point. Also the tour would have been even better if there were some bar snacks available to eat after the tour. Others wise great day!!

Great and interesting tour and great beer

Birthday treat goes down a storm

My experience was a seventy birthday treat for my husband. I arranged through virgin experience days for him to the a tour at the fuller's brewery. He had a great time especially with the tastings of different beers afterwards. He said the tour was informative too so not just about drinking the beer then!!! The staff were great and very knowledgeable l. I would recommend this experience especially if you have a hard to please husband like mine!!

Keith Jeffcoat

On the tour of what I expected to be a working brewery it was clear that nothing was going on in terms of how the ale is made , I think I should have been told that Fridays were very quiet due to the market which is what we were told , when we were leaving the receptionist told us that another reason it was quiet was because a lot of the staff were out celebrating someone’s birthday drinking ! I would like to be given the experience again but when it’s actually a working brewery

I've done brewery tours in the US, Ireland, and England and the Fullers tour is really good. The guide we had (Lisa) was knowledgeable, had been with the company a long time, and had a great personality for the tour. She was alternately friendly, funny, and informative. The tour was organised around the four main ingredients of beer (barley, water, hops, and yeast) and it showed the old way and new way of brewing at each stage. Often you see an old copper and brick version and then you see the new, computerised and stainless steel version. Lots of the photo opportunities are in pretty poor light. If you bring a camera, be sure to be ready for dim indoor lighting. On the up side, you see a real working brewery doing its thing. You really do sometimes step out of the way so someone can walk by and keep doing his job. On the down side, this means they generally only do tours during business hours. Skive off work one afternoon, though. It's worth it. Parking near the brewery is limited, so be sure to allow yourself some time to find a spot. There's ample pay-and-display parking, but it's a lot of twisty turny streets in there. I'm not sure how easy it is to get to this on public transport. We drove. That's a shame, because somebody's not getting the full experience. The tastings at the end were generous and we got to sample lots of different beers. I had only really had the London Pride and Honeydew before the tour. I'll be watching for the Jack Frost Christmas ale and Chiswick Ale now.

Some of the memorabilia and historical items you see on the tour.

Have I died and gone to heaven ? - I was invited to go around the Fullers brewery on a tour and sample some of the beers afterwards. Apart from feeling a bit iffy about a guided tour (not my kind if thing) - free beers were on offer so how could I refuse !! Fullers are one of the most successful breweries in London and offer guided tours around their brewery to show you how they produce there beers and offers an insight into the history of this old site and brew house. Obviously the climax of the tour is visiting the bar in the cellar and getting stuck into the IPA and other Fullers favourites. Tours are Monday to Friday throughout the day and are in groups of at least four but up to 15. An interesting and educational visit that was very informative and I enjoyed it very much. The tasting was obviously the icing on the cake and you can also get a lunch in the Fullers pub next door.

griffin brewery tour

The Griffin Brewery tour is one of the best I've ever been on. The guides are incredibly knowledgeable and love their beer. It's unique from your typical brewery tour, because this beer is Cask conditioned. The beer is a bit different from the ordinary beer you'd expect. That being said, it is delicious. After the tour, you sample each of the beers on tap, then pour your own full pint that you find most appealing. You may also sample Vintage ales from years passed. You will leave feeling pretty good, and happy with your new found knowledge of beer!

Photo of Adam P.

Griffin Brewery provides the best brewery tour I've ever been on. The history at Fuller's makes breweries in the States look adolescent. Our guide was a brewery retiree who knew his facts and made the tour informative and a lot of fun. The tasting in their cellar finished off a great tour. I'm now a big fan of cask ales and I'm glad I was able to find London Pride, London Porter and 1845 at my local Total Wine store.

Photo of Aubrey R.

One of the best brewery tours I've ever done - well worth the £12 per person! An hourong tour, very informative, was followed by an all-you-can-drink tasting in a really neat museum area... And the tastings come in half pint size! The restaurant (Mawson's) was also excellent. Definitely recommended if you're a beer lover!

Fuller's Brewery Tour

If you’ve been following us for a while, you’ll know we are big fans of beer. We have visited breweries all over the place. Some of our favourites have been in Ludlow , Santorini , and Brussels . But wherever we go, we usually find some tour or tasting to get involved with.

fuller's brewery tour

And it just so happens London has a large brewery in Chiswick, right beside the River Thames. We visited Fuller’s Brewery with The London Pass , and it had been a long time coming since the brewery cancelled two previous visits. But we made it in the end. So, how was it? Great, actually! The brewery delivered some information we’d not heard before on a tour, plus the Griffin Brewery is home to something rather special, which has nothing to do with beer, but rather a wisteria plant.

20230805 Fullers Brewery Tour 010

The Fuller’s Brewery and the Griffin Brewery are the same place but are sometimes referred to by these two names, but its proper name is Fuller’s Griffin Brewery. So what’s a Griffin got to do with any of it? Because back in the day, the Griffin was the symbol of Meux and Reid’s Brewery in Liquorpond Street, and when that brewery collapsed, the name and emblem were adopted by the Thompson brothers, who owned the brewery at the time.

Fuller’s Brewery Tour

The Fuller’s Brewery tour takes you around the Griffin Brewery and lasts roughly 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours. It starts and ends in the shop, but we’ll come back to that later.

Once you’re signed in and have your high-vis vest issued, you get a health and safety brief. After all, safety is the number one priority, remember!

20230805 Fullers Brewery Tour 012

Once you’ve had your H&S brief, you are led out into the yard, where you get eyes on something you might not expect to see in a brewery – a wisteria plant. But what’s special about this particular one is that it is officially the oldest wisteria plant in England, dating back to 1816. It was one of two saplings brought from China. The other went to Kew Gardens but died. If you want to see it in bloom, visit the brewery between April and June.

20230805 Fullers Brewery Tour 001 1

After admiring this beast of a plant (it covers the side of the building!), you head into the Griffin Brewery, where you are introduced to the brewery’s history, the brewing process, and some of the old brewing kit used back in the day when the brewery, as it is known today, started.

20230805 Fullers Brewery Tour 005

It’s great that Fuller’s has kept hold of its heritage and developed its modern brewing techniques around the old stuff instead of ripping it all out. The tour is more comprehensive than the others we have been, too. It takes you on a longer journey, from the roots of the brewery, right through to the packaging robots and loading bay, plus there is talk about how Fuller’s tries to reduce its waste, such as sending the spent yeast off to be made into such things as Marmite.

Hock Cellar

Once the tour around the Griffin Brewery is complete, you will step into Hock Cellar. Undoubtedly, this is the best bit of the tour because it’s where the good bit happens – the beer tasting. The tasting offered something unique to any other brewery tour or beer tasting we’ve ever done. This is because you get whatever time is left to drink as much beer as you want.

20230805 Fullers Brewery Tour 016

We had 35 minutes left after the main tour, which left 35 minutes to try as many beers on offer as we wanted, which was quite a few. There are beers on tap, plus a few bottled ones, from the Fuller’s range, plus a few from their sister breweries, including the odd cider.

20230805 Fullers Brewery Tour 019

There’s also a bit of a museum in Hock Cellar, too. You’ll find some old artefacts from Fuller’s history in there, including the impressive beer dispensing machine from the days when they used to give beer to their staff to be drunk on-site.

20230805 Fullers Brewery Tour 020

Once you’re done in Hock Cellar, you’ll be taken back to the shop where your tour ends. Inside the shop, you will find a bar where you can get another drink or wander around to pick up a souvenir or buy some beer to take away.

20230805 Fullers Brewery Tour 030

Surprisingly, the beer is good value if you are buying one of the cases to take away. And it’s also worth noting – you can visit the shop without being on the Griffin Brewery tour.
