Karnala Fort Trek

Karnala fort trek is a hill fort hike in Raigad district about 10 km from Panvel city. It is also called the Funnel hill because of it’s pinnacle. It is now a protected place lying within the Karnala Bird Sanctuary. In the past it was a fort of strategic importance as it served as a watchtower and overlooked the Bor pass which connected the Konkan coast to the interior of Maharashtra (Deccan Plateau) and was the main trade route between these areas.

The fort is thought to be constructed before 1400, under the Devagiri Yadavs(1248ā€“1318) and the Tughlaq rulers (1318ā€“1347).Ā  Karnala was the capital of the Northern Konkan districts of their respective empires. It later fell under the command of the Gujarat Sultanate but in 1540 was taken over by Nizam Shah of Ahmednagar. The Gujarat sultans then requested the help of the Dom Francisco de Menenzes the commanding officer of the Portuguese at Bassien (modern day Vasai) to win it back. He ordered 500 of his soldiers to Karnala fort and they were able to capture it. The fort was left in charge of the Gujarat Sultanate but with Portuguese garrisons.

The Gujarat sultans fled to Vasai, surrendering the fort to the Portuguese. The loss of Karnala enraged Nizam Shah, who sent 5,000 men to reclaim the fort and the surrounding countryside. The attempt was unsuccessful, and the Portuguese continued to hold the fort. Deciding that the forts of Sangli and Karnala were of little strategic value, however, the Portuguese viceroy agreed to return them to Nizam Shah for an annual payment of Rs. 17,500 (or 5,000 gold Pardoas).

Shivaji Maharaj conquered it from the Portuguese in 1670 by building breastworks as he advanced. After his death in 1680 it was taken over by Aurangzeb. After this the Mughals occupied it for some time after which it in 1740 with the rise of the Peshwas of Pune it went to them. It remained under the command of killedar (garrison commander) Anantrao until a colonel Prother won the fort and established the rule of the British East India Company there in 1818.

The ruins of the fort are a popular destination for hiking and tourism. There are two ways to go up, one from the left of the restaurant inside the Karnala Bird Sanctuary and the other on the right. The left one is usually preferred and is an easy route up. The trekĀ  from this route is about 1 hour from the bottom to the base of the pinnacle. There are 5 resting places on the pathway made by forest department. There are safety railings near the steps at the base of the pinnacle. It is not advisable to cook food at the base of the pinnacle, as the smell of smoke irritates the Honey Bees. The water from the southernmost rock cut water cistern is potable. First aid is available at the forest guest house.

The route from the right is a challenging one and full of scree. One should not attempt it unless they are experienced or have a local guide.

Trekking during the monsoon is really an exhilarating experience.

On treks, first preference for food is ghar ka khana, fruits, dry fruits, lemon juice & lots of water over biscuits, breads and carbonated drinks. Also I do carry 1ā‚¹ chocolates for quick energy boosts. My normal attire includes full sleeved clothes , cap & proper trek shoes ( No flip-flops) Good goggles i.e anti-glares are must for summer treks. I also carry safety gadgets like fire starter, waterproof torch, whistle, first-aid just in case.

Karnala Trek Blog: TheFreeBird’s story

The entrance of Karnala makes me think that this is some kind of a Jurassic Park šŸ™‚

karnala fort trek difficulty level

This tar road will take you to the main Sanctuary where many birds have been kept in cages. Earlier there used to be different kinds of birds here but now only few are kept for public viewing. On enquiring with the officials they said that most of the birds have been released in the wild on government orders & only few injured ones are kept for rehabilitation. Lies i say šŸ˜‰

karnala fort trek difficulty level

Spotting a peacock dancing got me excited. There are few more houses here for officials & a canteen as well. From here onwards starts a trail to the Karnala fort trek. The start is a bit inclined and we need to walk the muddy stairs for abour 20 minutes to reach the Rest Point 2 ( Also called Nagesh Point) . In between there is also a rest point 1 build by the authorities as well. Lekin itne me thakk ke nahi chalega .

karnala trek begins

On weekends there is a mad rush at Karnala & you will only spot humans everywhere . I prefer weekdays to be one with nature. From the Rest point 2 , the trek becomes a normal walk till the base of the fort which is about 1 km away. I stayed silent and spotted many birds singing melodiously. Since it was a weekday the entire fort was empty. I spotted a peahen, parrots , monkeys ,mongoose, vanar ( big monkey) , many crabs and few birds with unusual colours & sounds which i could not identify.

karnala fort trek difficulty level

I had now reached Roots point ( i named it so). This was once a normal route but lot of soil erosion over years has exposed all the roots. Here I spotted a mongoose looking at me. He might have been wondering how come this human is here on a weekday . Surprise. And it ran away into the bushes.

Monkeys at Karnala fort

I spotted few monkeys staring at me from far. The trick is not to look at the monkeys at all. Just look down and walk . If you try to show aggression , remember you are in their home and they will be aggressive as well. Just stay cool and walk. If you are having any girls / ladies in your group tell them not to shout out of fear, Also if they have any bags make sure to carry it off them.

Forts visible from Karnala fort

On some monsoon days when there are no clouds forts like Manikgad , Irshalgad , Kalavantin , Songiri , Matheran , Sondai , Prabalgad and sometimes even Rajmachi , Bhimashankar, Padargad & Kothaligad are visible . However today only clouds. Badal important hai boss . The entire region was under a cloud siege.

karnala fort trek difficulty level

Walking further i saw the first glimpse of Karnala fort emerging majestically through the clouds.

karnala fort trek difficulty level

As we near the actual fort we first reach a Bhawani Temple at its base which is almost half way to the top, i sat down and had some snacks. The actual Karnala fort begins from this area wherein you enter the fort through remains of fortifications

karnala fort trek difficulty level

Moving ahead is a maze of stairs with pole railing fence to safeguard the slippery edges. I reached here just in time before the clouds wreathed the entire fort. Look at this beauty

karnala fort engulfed by clouds

The stairs to this main entrance are exposed and not in good shape. It would be nice to pass through these stairs as quickly as possile.

When there is no crowd this is indeed a gateway to heaven, the view from this gate is very beautiful. Have a look at the video below. Make sure to follow me on Instagram for some offbeat nature trails

View from Karnala fort main entrance door

As you see in the above pic the view from the entrance is beautiful throughout the year. As I continued ahead the main gate is near by. This gate has been newly installed by some fort lovers. Nice !!!

karnala fort trek difficulty level

By now it was getting late for me as the clouds had decided to end the daylight. Hence i rushed through the remaining part of the fort as quickly as possible. However the clouds & wind at the top made for a superb combination. I wanted to stay there and take in as much of this fresh air & the scenic view had to offer. When i returned here in winter the picture was very clear & equally welcoming

karnala fort trek difficulty level

In the above photo you will see the Pandu tower which is a huge basalt rock which was used for keeping an eye on the enemy movements in the areas near by the Bor Ghar which connect Deccan & konkan plateau. Its not possible to climb it in monsoon. However it can be climbed in summer with proper technical mountaineering skills. Besides the tower is a armoury room which is in dilapidated condition. 5 years back i had seen the walls of that armoury to be higher, but with time it has got smaller in height. If you go in you will see a lot of fallen stones from the walls. If proper care is not taken at proper time these historical monuments will be lost forever.

Walls of karnala fort

At the base of this grand tower are atleast 10 water tanks ( may be even more) . These have been the source of drinking water for centuries. Now most of them lie in disregards and as a canvas for some idiots to write their names on. I dont know why people deface such monuments. What they achieve by writing names is beyond my grasp. Be a hero & prevent someone from doing this idiocy

Sonki flowering in September- October makes the fort come alive. The mighty rock tower has been attacked by clouds & rain for thousands of years still holds strong after centuries . When i came back in winter this view presents itself in a different way as you will see below.

karnala fort trek difficulty level

The lower part of Karnala was looking terrific with all the green and yellow decoration. Monsoon has its own flavour with the clouds & greenery and winter has its own branding with beautiful sunsets.

I will prepare a full length YouTube video for this trek. However for the time being here is short video of Karnala trek. Make sure to subscribe to my channel or I will hide your trek shoes šŸ˜ Youtube Short: https://youtube.com/shorts/iaDV85TYlcY

I sat here at the top for some time enjoying the nature. It was time to leave. I was completely drenched and would have loved a chai or cup of hot coffee. Say no more.

karnala fort trek difficulty level

In winter I had lots of time to enjoy the sunsets & the beautiful lights of dusk. Since I was not drenched as in monsoon I just sat here for an hour to enjoy the orange hues

Sunset from Karnala fort trek

In winter I had lots of time to enjoy the sunsets & the beautiful lights of dusk. Since I was not drenched as in monsoon I just sat here for an hour to enjoy the orange hues & finally unwillingly left after the cold became unbearable.

Reached my bike & rushed home.

Wow. Karnala pics looks really good. Those yellow flowers look lovely

Thanks a lot. Sonki bloom in monsoon adds to the beauty

Is the fort accessible now, since I saw a news that fort is closed due to some cracks

Yes Aditi, when I visited last Friday the route was closed after the temple. It might be fixed after monsoon i guess

Great article! Excellent insights! Thank you! Do you think trekking up to the fort in April is doable and worth it? Would love to hear your thoughts

Thanks man. The entrance of fort at first gate is blocked for rework. Not sure on when the work will be completed… If it does get completed…then u can see the entire fort…however in April it would be very hot & not necessarily a good trek time…if u still want to do it in April starting the trek very early is the only option

The Complete Guide to Karnala Fort Trek

The Karnala Fort trekĀ begins at the entrance of the bird sanctuary on a well-defined road and winds through the forest. Eventually, it leads to an uphill track under thick vegetation. There are multiple routes inside the sanctuary that lead to the main trail up to the mountain and offer a variety of fauna, both in the enclosure and in the wilderness. The trek to the top is a little challenging but thoroughly enjoyable and the fort provides a comfortable perch to rest and have lunch. After a final walk up to the bastion, one is presented with a splendid 360-degree view of the surrounding Raigad district. A 125 ft high basalt pillar sticks out like a thumb at the centre of the peak. It is clearly visible from far away on all sides.Ā

Short Itinerary

A beautiful fort in maharashtra that makes for a pleasant one-day trek.

  • Karnala is a quaint fort overlooking a sprawling bird sanctuary. Situated along the Mumbai-Goa highway, it is at a distance of about 10 km from the city of Panvel.
  • It is an absolute beginnerā€™s trek amidst the natural flora and fauna of the enclosed sanctuary.
  • The relative ease of this trail also provides an excellent opportunity for parents to introduce their children to trekking and nature.

Detailed Itinerary

Karnala Fort Trek

En route sanctuary

There are essentially two routes that wind through the forest and lead to the trail up the mountain. The main route is a well-defined motorable road and goes straight through the center of the forest. The alternate route is a crude track that encircles the sanctuary before rejoining the main road.

Karnala Fort Trek

Signboard with trek map

Main route:

The main route, sweeping through the heart of the sanctuary, provides a rich experience of the flora and fauna of the forest. The main road comes to an end at the base of the mountain, where there is a big enclosure containing a variety of birds and final signs of human settlement. There are a couple of houses for the forest officials, a canteen to cater to the tourist population and a relaxing area offering a glimpse of the pinnacle of the fort.

Karnala Fort Trek

Final settlements at the base

A signboard on the left side of the road indicates the direction to the Karnala fort. The trail uphill is full of scree and gets steep gradually. The gradient alternates between loose soil patches and muddy scree. There are multiple signboards en route and even sheds in some places that offer respite from the sun. There are several forks on the trail and it is advisable to keep left.

Karnala Fort Trek

Uphill trail through the dense forest

The pinnacle of the Karnala fort lies to the extreme right of the sanctuary and constantly remains in view as one is climbing uphill. The track uphill comes to an abrupt end as one reaches towards the top of the mountain. It sharply breaks ways, right and left. The summit lies to the right and a small uphill walk of nearly 15 minutes will get one to the base of the fort.

Karnala Fort Trek

The pinnacle to the extreme right of the mountain

The trail flattens out and ends at a small temple near the base of the fort. A flight of steps can be seen from here leading to a stone frame that forms the main door of the fort. The tall basalt pillar lies in the centre overlooking the bastion on the other side of the fort.

Karnala Fort Trek

Flight of stairs leading to the entrance of the fort

The fort looks formidable from the outside, but inside, most of it is in ruins. Barring a few stone door frames and staircases, the fort is just a shadow of its former self. A pathway along the left-hand side of the pillar leads to the back of the fort that has a bastion and a rampart at the edge of the mountain.

Karnala Fort Trek

Rear view of the fort

The base of the thumb-like structure forms a small plateau and offers a wide area where one can rest and have snacks/lunch. There are a couple of rock-cut tanks that hold water but they might not be potable. One is advised to carry water along with them on the trek. Also, watch out for monkeys that are ever ready to snatch a bite of your meal.

Karnala Fort Trek

Trail leading to the edge of the mountain and the rampart

One has to retrace the same path while descending and the way down takes no more than 90 minutes. The descent is short and the cool air under the thick forest cover hardly causes any exhaustion. There is a canteen at the base, where one can get their bottles refilled and sip some hot tea/coffee. Local transportation can be hired from outside the sanctuary gate to get back to Panvel city.

How to Get Fit for the Trek

Cardiovascular endurance

The secret to ascending any trail lies in building your cardiovascular endurance. You can begin by jogging every day. Ideally, you should be able to jog 4 km in 20 minutes before the start of the trek. It takes time to be able to cover this distance in the given time. Start slow and increase your pace every day. Swimming, cycling and stair climbing without too many breaks in between can help too. Strength This is another area you should work on. You will need to build strength in your muscles and in your core body. You can do some squats to strengthen your leg muscles. Do around 3 sets of squats, with 8 squats in each set. Apart from this, you can add planks and crunches to your workout.

Flexibility

Another aspect that will help you trek comfortably is flexibility. For this, you can do some stretching exercises - stretch your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors, lower back muscles and shoulders regularly. Carrying a backpack, however light, can become a strain after a while. These exercises will help you to be in good shape before the trek.

Working out indoors

If you can't go out and jog because of time and space constraints, here's a video you can use to work out indoors.

What to Pack for the Trek

The Karnala Fort is just a one-day trek. You will only need the following things.

  • Small 20L backpack
  • TwoĀ litre water bottle
  • A jacket or poncho in case of rain

Moderately difficult trek. But a short one.

Moderately difficult trek. Trail is clean and litter free. Remember to carry enough water and snacks as there are no vendors after the first 200 m. The canteen run by ladies, right after you enter the bird sanctuary gate is highly recommended - esp the poha and vada pav. No washrooms on the way either. So make the most of the washroom available right at the entrance. Wear excellent shoes. It's quite warm throughout the year, with little tree cover on the way. So no need to carry jackets, even in winter. The final leg, at the fort itself, does seem daunting. But it's worth it. Find a spot and sit down for a few moments of calm, eating your snacks and clicking some gorgeous pics

we thought to visit this fort to bring in the new year but say a huge crowd without any covid safety protocols - so left

very crowded and not at all safe. no precuations were taken and hence we decided to leave the place. authorities should monitor these tourist places more strictly

On our first trip after Covid, on the way to Alibag we stopped by the Karnala bird sanctuary. We expected it to be shut due to Covid, but it wasnā€™t. The bird sanctuary has a lot of different trekking routes that go through the park. We didnā€™t spot any birds as such except the occasional chirping sounds and a few cages with parrots, peacock, kite, etc The Karnala fort trek as the name suggests leads up to Karnala fort. I would grade the difficulty level as moderate as it is a steep climb up over the hill. It is about 2.5-3km one way and takes about 1 1/2 -2hrs to reach the top. Make sure you carry enough water with you.The path takes you amidst nature and the views from the top are refreshing. The fort was ruled by the British, Marathas and the Mughals at various times. There is a canteen at the base in the sanctuary which provides decent Maharashtrian snacks and lunch. You can ask them to prepare some lemonade for your hike... trust me you will need it!

It has the same main entrance from the Karnala Bird Sanctuary and is closed due to Covid. We drove as no information was available online. Tip: The exit to the Karnala Fort is a side exit on the left, there is no signage so put on Maps and then take the exit. We overshot and had to reverse.

On a weekend, just take a rickshaw and enjoy the beauty of traveling on the old Mumbai Goa Road to this place.

Karnala Fort, Panvel Overview

Karnala fort also known as the Funnel Hill is a hill fort in Raigad district, about 10 kmĀ from Panvel city and 65 kmĀ from Mumbai. The fort is a protected property which is situated within the Karnala Bird Sanctuary and offers a great opportunity to enjoy a refreshing, easy trek. Karnala fort consists of two forts out of which one is at a higher level and other is at a lower level.

The trek to the top of the fort takes at least 2 hours if you are in good health, and a little lesser while walking back down. The route is quite easy and not very steep, although it gets very slippery during the monsoon. For more adventurous trekkers, there is a short-cut to the top of the fort as well which reduces the time by about half an hour; however, this route is very steep and should only be attempted if you are comfortable with trekking. We would advise you to carry at least 2 litres of water per person on the trek and make sure you are wearing appropriate shoes. In the middle of the higher level is a 125 feet tall basalt pillar which is famous as Pandu's tower. This pillar served as a watchtower when the fort was occupied, however now it is in a ruined state. There is a water reservoir here which supplies fresh water all year long. From the top of the fort, Prabalgad and Rajmachi forts can be seen on the northern side. The fort has two inscriptions one in Marathi and the other in Persian. The Marathi inscription which has no date is seen on the lower gate on the inner side, and its words are indecipherable. The Persian writing on the upper gate reads Syed Nuruddin Muhammad Khan, Hijri, and is probably from the Mughal era. The Fort has a recorded history of having passed through the hands of Muslim, Portuguese and Maratha rulers.

An easy hike to Karnala Fort

Karnala Fort view while ascending

Karnala fort also known as Funnel Hill, located near Panvel, is an easy family trek every Mumbaikar must make time for. This hill fort was of strategic importance to keep a watchful eye on Bor pass which connects Konkan and Deccan plateau.

Distance: 5.38 km (total)

Elevation Gain: 439m (1440 ft)

Difficulty: Easy

Base Village: Karnala Bird Sanctuary

Time Taken: Leisurely Ascend: 1hr 20 min

                      Descend: 45 min

How to get there?

Karnala Bird Sanctuary is located on NH-66, Mumbai Goa Highway and can be easily reached by a private vehicle that can be parked outside the main gate. Panvel is the nearest railway station and one can find share rickshaws to reach the base as well.

When is the right time to do this trek?

October to early April is the most apt time to do this hike, though monsoon season too has its own appeal.

karnala fort trek difficulty level

There are two trails and one is more frequented by birders. The other is a more established trail that climbs gradually.

A road from the ticket booth leads to a restaurant that offers refreshments and clean service stalls. Towards left is the preferred trail. It is a sensory experience climbing through woods with symphony of various birds in the sanctuary. Trees with gnarly looking branches and roots that run across the forest floor is a treat for every nature lover and was my favorite feature of this hike.

It is advisable to carry water along as I didnā€™t come across any streams in early December to refill. As you continue to ascent, the pinnacle of the fort makes a sudden appearance through the thick forest canopy. Further ahead is a T junction and trail heading towards right leads to the fort. Continue on this uphill ridge walk to reach the base of the fort.

Karnal fort summit

The fort is structured at two levels. The first level boasts of still standing fort walls with an entrance that can be reached by climbing stairs with supportive railing. The second level is a few stairs away from a fairly new beautiful wooden door set in fort walls.

Finally, you are right there looking in the eye of this 125 ft high basalt pillar, a thumb like eroded rock, also known as Pandu tower. This fort can be easily identified from afar with this feature sticking out at summit. It was used as a watch tower in the past.

Remains on Karnala fort

Couple of rock cut pillared cisterns are located below the tower and a couple of them on the right side overlooking the highway. Take the trail on left hand side of the pillar to reach the other end of the fort. Two beautiful lions can be seen carved on either side of the door at the rare that leads to the rampart. This is a perfect place to rest and recuperate before beginning the descent.

What other treks in the area should I consider too?

Forts near Panvel, namely Prabalgad, Kalavantin Durg, Manikgad , Irshalgad and Sankshi are hikes of moderate difficulty that an experienced hiker can consider.

About Karnala Fort

Karnala fort (also called Funnel Hill is a hill fort in Raigad district about 10 km from Panvel city. Currently it is a protected place lying within the Karnala Bird Sanctuary. It was a fort of strategic importance as it overlooked the Bor pass which connected the Konkan coast to the interior of Maharashtra (Deccan Plateau) and was the main trade route between these areas.

Karnala fort actually consists of two forts one at a higher level and other lower. At the centre of the higher level is a 125 feet high basalt pillar. It is also called Pandu’s tower. This structure was used as watchtower when the fort was occupied however now it is in a ruined condition. The presence of bee hives also makes it difficult to climb and have resulted in at least one casualty in recent times. There is a water cistern which provides fresh water all year long. From the top the forts of Prabalgad, Manikgad, Haji Malang, Chanderi fort, Matheran, Sankshi fort, Dronagiri fort, and Rajmachi are clearly visible.

Major Attractions:

  • Karnala Bird Sanctuary to get a glimpse of bird reserve
