Memorial Day may mark the unofficial beginning of summer in the U.S., but it’s the days ahead of it that kick off big airport crowds.

The holiday symbolizes the beginning of the summer vacation season for many Americans. But it’s hardly a vacation for airport employees, who typically get pummeled with the largest crowds of the year to date.

Some days around the long weekend are significantly busier than others, and if you can afford to be flexible when flying Memorial Day weekend, you’ll save money and avoid chaos.

The best and worst days to fly Memorial Day weekend

NerdWallet analyzed the past three years of Transportation Security Administration checkpoint data for the six days before and six days after Memorial Day, which shows how many passengers were screened at TSA checkpoints.

For every year analyzed, the Friday before Memorial Day was the most-crowded day to travel before the holiday, which is observed on the last Monday of May. As far as post-holiday, the Sunday after has attracted the largest crowds over the past two years.

Based on the average number of passengers that flew each day of the past three years, here are the most- to least-crowded days for the 13 days surrounding Memorial Day (including the holiday), ranked:

Friday before.

Sunday after Memorial Day (most crowded).

Thursday before.

Memorial Day (Monday).

Friday after.

Thursday after.

Wednesday before.

Tuesday after.

Sunday before.

Saturday after.

Wednesday after.

Saturday before.

Tuesday before (least crowded).

When broken out by pre- and post-Memorial Day travel, here are the three least-crowded days to travel ranked from least to most crowded. These are likely the best days to fly around Memorial Day weekend.

Pre-holiday:

Tuesday before.

Post-holiday:

Why flying the Friday of Memorial Day weekend isn’t ideal

While the Friday before Memorial Day is always a big travel day, it was even bigger before the pandemic. For example, in 2019, the Friday before Memorial Day was the third-busiest day at U.S. airports for the entire year, losing only to the Sunday after Thanksgiving and the Sunday of Fourth of July weekend.

In 2023, the Friday before Memorial Day ranked among the top 20 busiest airport days of the year. It was also the busiest day of 2023 up until that point in the year.

Given that, check-in and security lines will likely be longer this year.

The smarter, cheaper Memorial Day weekend itinerary

If you work a standard Monday-Friday workweek and have the holiday off, then leaving Friday after work and returning the Sunday after Memorial Day might make sense. This minimizes the number of vacation days you take, and you’d get eight full days of vacation.

But if you follow the classic Friday-Monday weekend travel itinerary, then you’ll pay — in terms of literal price and airport crowds. Deviate from that schedule to find lighter crowds and perhaps better Memorial Day flight deals, too. Try these travel days instead:

Travel on Saturday: Rather than rushing out from work Friday afternoon, take that evening to pack, spend Friday night in your own bed and take an early flight out Saturday. Morning flights are often more reliable than evening flights.

Fly home the Wednesday after: A lot of people opt for traveling on Memorial Day itself, and many people fly the day after. But relatively few people extend their trip one more day and fly Wednesday.

If you do, you’ll avoid the worst of the airport crowds. You increase your chances of saving money on airfare . Plus, you’ll be home in time for a delightful two-day workweek — which might be just enough time to wrap up lingering tasks without getting fresh projects dumped on your desk.

Fly home the Saturday after: You can still have a weeklong vacation and avoid Sunday’s crowds by flying home the Saturday after Memorial Day.

Then you’ll have a full day at home to knock out laundry and meal prep before the next workweek starts. After all, sometimes the most relaxing way to end a trip is taking a vacation from that vacation.

Consider travel insurance

If you are forking out the big dollars to travel this Memorial Day, consider booking your trip with a card that has travel insurance or purchasing a supplementary policy from a third-party insurance provider, like Allianz or World Nomads .

Travel insurance can help you get money back for canceled or interrupted trips. It can also fund expenses like additional clothing if your luggage gets lost or an extra hotel room if you need to stay overnight due to a flight delay.

Read the policy, though, as many plans come to your rescue only if you experience a covered reason.

A record number of Americans may fly this summer. Here's everything you need to know

Travelers line up to check in for United Airlines flights at San Francisco International Airport on July 1, 2022 in San Francisco, Calif. This summer is expected to be a record for air travel.

Memorial Day weekend is upon us, kicking off the busy summer vacation season, and airlines are forecasting that this could be their busiest summer ever. Industry projections indicate that despite relatively high airfares, U.S. airlines could carry a record number of passengers this summer, even though they're still operating fewer flights than before the pandemic.

The coming months are likely to be a "stress test" for a national aviation system plagued by recent staffing shortages, antiquated technology, air traffic control problems, scheduling issues and labor disputes.

After widespread flight delays and cancellations last year, consumer advocates and some within the travel industry worry air travelers could face similar disruptions that will mess up their summer travel plans again.

If you're among those hoping to jet off to somewhere fun this summer, here's what you can expect.

Long lines and packed planes starting this weekend

"This summer's travel demand will be as strong as we've seen since before the pandemic and potentially the strongest ever," says Geoff Freeman, president and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association, which represents airlines, hotels and other travel-related businesses.

The crush of travelers starts Memorial Day weekend, with AAA forecasting that about 3.4 million Americans will be flying this Thursday through Monday.

Including the numbers of commercial airline flights and those on smaller general aviation aircraft, there will be more than 313,000 flights over the seven-day holiday period from May 24 to May 30, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. While that is just below pre-pandemic 2019 levels, the airlines may actually be flying more people by using bigger planes than they normally would on many routes.

The FAA projects that this Thursday will be the busiest day of the Memorial Day weekend, with more than 51,000 flights forecast.

Among the commercial airlines, United is predicting this Memorial Day weekend will be its busiest in more than a decade. Delta expects a whopping 17% increase in passengers from last year.

Lack of air traffic controllers is industry's biggest issue, United Airlines CEO says

"The airports are packed," says Steve Solomon, chief commercial officer of the Airlines Reporting Corp., which processes and tracks airline ticket sales. "So travelers should prepare to get to the airport early, allow adequate time to get through security screening, through the TSA, and expect to see a lot of people on really full planes."

Solomon says Europe is especially popular this summer, with huge increases in the number of airline tickets purchased for the top ten destinations across the Atlantic, even though prices are up significantly.

"Summer 2022 was pretty rocky"

If last summer is any indication, air travelers might be in for some turbulence before they get off the ground this summer.

"Things were very bad for air travelers last year. They were as bad as they've been in 25 years or more," says Andre Delattre, national program director for PIRG, the Public Interest Research Group. The consumer advocacy group analyzed airline passenger complaints filed with the U.S. Department of Transportation.

"There were five times more complaints in 2022 compared to 2019 before the pandemic, even though fewer people were flying," he says.

Airlines delayed and canceled a staggering number of flights last year — more than 210,000 were canceled, according to the flight tracking firm FlightAware. "Other than the early months of the pandemic, that's more canceled flights than any year since 2001, when, of course, 9/11 disrupted air travel," Delattre says.

A recent Government Accountability Office investigation found that the sharp increase in airline flight disruptions in recent years was largely caused by factors within the airlines' control, including maintenance issues, technology glitches and staffing problems.

The latest workers calling for a better quality of life: airline pilots

The latest workers calling for a better quality of life: airline pilots

Even though taxpayers shelled out $50 billion to keep airlines in business and pilots, flight attendants and other employees on the payrolls during the pandemic, airlines offered early retirements and other incentives for workers, including experienced flight crews and ground crews, to leave.

Then air travel demand returned much more quickly than airlines expected. Many tried to cash in with aggressive scheduling, but the staff was stretched too thin to meet that demand, especially during severe weather, which led flight crews to time out without fresh crew members to replace them. With planes and flight crews out of place and too few replacements available, it would take some airlines a week or more to get caught up from one series of thunderstorms.

Add to that a new pilot training backlog, and shortages of mechanics, maintenance workers, gate agents and customer service staff, along with technology glitches and outdated scheduling software at some airlines, and it all cascaded into several periods over the last year in which hundreds of thousands of would be travelers were stranded, the worst of which was over the Christmas holiday, when Southwest alone had to cancel 17,000 flights .

Airlines say they're better prepared now

American and its rival airlines all say they're much better prepared for this summer than last. They've all gone on a hiring spree, with passenger airlines adding nearly 4,500 employees just in March alone.

The industry now employs more than 486,000 workers in the U.S., nearly 10% more than they had before the pandemic .

Most airlines handled the recent surge in spring break travelers relatively well, and the cancellation rate so far this year is down significantly from last year. According to the federal Bureau of Transportation Statistics , airlines canceled 1.7% of flights over the first three months of this year, far lower than the 2.7% flight cancellation rate for all of last year, and 4.1% for the first quarter of 2022.

"We are as prepared as we can possibly be," says Nick Calio, president and CEO of Airlines for America, the lobbying group representing the nation's biggest air carriers. "We've got a lot more employees. We have reduced our schedules and adjusted how we're flying," in an effort to minimize flight disruptions.

But many industry experts warn travelers to be prepared for significant flight delays and cancellations anyway, caused by things outside of the airlines' control.

The FAA's air traffic control issues

An American Airlines Airbus A319 airplane takes off past the air traffic control tower at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Arlington, Va., in January.

While the Biden administration is turning up the heat on the airlines to fulfill their obligations to passengers, the airlines are growing frustrated with the federal government's own aviation shortcomings.

The FAA warns that a significant shortage of air traffic controllers overseeing the very congested New York area airspace could increase flight delays into and out of Newark, LaGuardia and JFK airports by 45% this summer.

In addition, the chronically underfunded FAA is also struggling to replace outdated technology. The failure of a pilot notification system in January led the FAA to briefly halt all flight departures nationwide, causing thousands of flight delays and cancellations that day.

Meanwhile, Customs and Border Protection staffing shortages in many airports has led to hourslong waits for international travelers returning to the U.S. to get through customs.

Geoff Freeman of U.S. Travel puts the blame for many of these problems not on the airlines, but on Congress and the federal government.

"These problems have come out of years and years of underinvestment," Freeman says. "If the government doesn't act now, the headaches won't just happen during peak travel season and holidays, it will become our daily reality."

A man pushes his bags at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on May 27, 2021 in Los Angeles as people travel for Memorial Day weekend. The Department of Transportation has a website to assist travelers with knowing their rights.

Airline passengers who run into problems from flight disruptions to lost luggage this summer can find out more about their rights and the airlines' responsibilities at the Department of Transportation's Office of Aviation Consumer Protection . The site also links to a dashboard listing which airlines are willing to pay for meals, ground transportation, hotels and other expenses incurred because of significant delays and cancellations that are the airline's fault. It also link to a site where consumers can file complaints.

Experts recommend booking flights earlier in the day as storms tend to develop later in the afternoon and evening. It's also a good idea to check the weather forecast for your destination and any cities where you have a layover. The FAA has a site showing where severe weather may cause problems for air travelers each day.

Use the airline's app to track not just whether your flight is on time, but where the plane is coming from and if there are delays there. Book nonstop flights, if possible, so you don't get stranded on a layover.

Travelers who are checking luggage should also be sure to pack an extra change of clothes or two and medications and other necessities in their carry-on bag, in case there's a significant delay or cancellation after you've checked in.

The bottom line for those of us flying this summer is to plan ahead, prepare for the worst — and hope for the best.

Memorial Day Weekend—the unofficial kickoff to summer travel—is nearly upon us. And this year, more Americans are planning to travel than in recent memory: Travel organization AAA says the holiday is “expected to be the third busiest Memorial Day weekend since 2000.”

Over the holiday travel period, from Thursday, May 25 through Monday, May 29, nearly 3.4 million people are expected to board planes, according to AAA’s data. That’s 11 percent higher than in 2022. “This summer travel season could be one for the record books, especially at airports,” Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, said in a statement . The group predicts that airports will be the busiest they’ve been over Memorial Day Weekend since 2005.

With so many people traveling, several destinations have risen to the top as most popular for the holiday, and metasearch site Skyscanner gathered the top nine destinations in the US , as well as five international destinations where Americans plan to wile away the long weekend.

Here’s where American tourists are planning on traveling over Memorial Day Weekend 2023—plus how to still get a deal on airfare if you haven’t booked yet.

Top domestic destinations

For the top domestic destinations, there was a 40 percent increase in airfare this year, according to AAA’s booking data. Unsurprisingly, warm-weather locales are trending for the holiday weekend, as well as a few major cities. Florida will be the most popular state with travelers, with three cities appearing in the top nine rankings.

The nine most popular US destinations for Memorial Weekend, according to Skyscanner, are:

  • Las Vegas, Nevada

  • London, England
  • Paris, France
  • Rome, Italy
  • Tokyo, Japan
  • Cancun, Mexico

42.3 Million Americans Expected to Travel for Memorial Day Weekend

Air travel set to surpass pre-pandemic numbers as demand for flights soars.

memorial weekend air travel

WASHINGTON, DC (May 15, 2023) AAA projects 42.3 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home this Memorial Day weekend*, a 7% increase over 2022. This year, 2.7 million more people will travel for the unofficial start of summer compared to last year, a sign of what’s to come in the months ahead.

“This is expected to be the third busiest Memorial Day weekend since 2000, when AAA started tracking holiday travel,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “More Americans are planning trips and booking them earlier, despite inflation. This summer travel season could be one for the record books, especially at airports.”

Nearly 3.4 million travelers are expected to fly to their destinations this Memorial Day, that’s an increase of 11% over last year. Air travel over the holiday weekend is projected to exceed pre-pandemic levels, with 170,000 more passengers – or 5.4% more – than in 2019. Despite high ticket prices, demand for flights is skyrocketing. This Memorial Day weekend could be the busiest at airports since 2005.

Memorial Day road trips are up 6% over last year. 37.1 million Americans will drive to their destinations, an increase of more than 2 million. Gas prices are lower this holiday compared to last year, when the national average was more than $4 a gallon. Despite the lower prices at the pump, car travel this holiday will be shy of pre-pandemic numbers by about 500,000 travelers.

More people this holiday are taking other modes of transportation, like buses and trains. These travelers are expected to total 1.85 million, an increase of 20.6% over 2022.

Best/Worst Times to Travel and Peak Congestion by Metro

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, expects Friday, May 26 to be the busiest day on the roads during the long Memorial Day weekend. The best times to travel by car are in the morning or evening after 6 p.m. The lightest traffic days will be Saturday and Sunday . Major metro areas like Boston, New York, Seattle, and Tampa will likely see travel times double compared to normal.

“With lower fuel prices and more travelers on the road compared to last year, drivers should expect long delays this holiday weekend, especially in and around major metros as commuters mix with Memorial Day travelers,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX. “Knowing when and where congestion will build can help drivers avoid the stress of sitting in traffic. Our advice is to avoid driving during peak hours or use alternative routes.”

Top Destinations

AAA booking data for the Memorial Day weekend shows tourist hotspots like Orlando, New York City, and Las Vegas are top domestic destinations. Cruise port cities in Florida and Alaska, as well as Seattle, are high on the list given the 50% increase in domestic cruise bookings compared to last year. Other popular U.S. cities this Memorial Day include Denver, Boston, Anaheim, and Canton, Ohio – home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

“We are seeing a demand for iconic cities, international vacation packages, and cruises with included amenities that provide more value for the price,” Twidale added.

Travelers are paying more for Memorial Day trips this year, in large part due to the rising cost of airline tickets. AAA booking data shows a 40% increase in airfare to this year’s Top Destinations. But that’s not stopping travelers from booking flights abroad. International travel is surging with bookings 250% higher this holiday weekend compared to 2022. European cities are the most popular, including Rome, Paris, Dublin, London, Barcelona, and Athens. International car rentals are up more than 80% over 2022. AAA reports strong sales for International Driving Permits this year, almost double what they were last year. The passport courier service RushMyPassport is also seeing an unprecedented number of applications for expedited passport and visa services this year.

Holiday Forecast Methodology

Travel Forecast

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from S&P Global Market Intelligence’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and S&P Global Market Intelligence have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior —all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of April 17, 2023.

Memorial Day Weekend 2023 Is Expected to Break Travel Records — Here's When to Leave to Avoid Traffic

AAA Travel expects the holiday weekend to be one of the busiest since 2000.

memorial weekend air travel

More than 42 million Americans are expected to travel for Memorial Day this year, marking a notable increase from last year and one of the busiest Memorial Day holiday weekends on record.

In total, 42.3 million Americans are expected to travel 50 miles or more from their homes over the Memorial Day holiday weekend (known as the unofficial start of summer) from Thursday, May 25, to Monday, May 29, according to AAA . That represents a 7 percent increase — or 2.7 million more people — compared to the same time period in 2022.

The jump is being seen across the board from air travel to road trips , trains , buses, and more.

“This is expected to be the third busiest Memorial Day weekend since 2000, when AAA started tracking holiday travel,” Paula Twidale, the senior vice president of AAA Travel, said in a statement. “More Americans are planning trips and booking them earlier, despite inflation. This summer travel season could be one for the record books, especially at airports.”

For those hitting the road, more than 37 million Americans will hit the road and road trips will see a 6 percent increase compared to 2022. That’s spurred by lower prices at the pump with a gallon averaging about $3.54 nationally, according to AAA . Last year, the average was more than $4 per gallon over the holiday weekend.

Travelers who are driving and want to beat traffic should avoid heading out on Friday, May 26, which is expected to be the busiest day on the roads. The least crowded driving days will be Saturday and Sunday while the best times to drive are in the mornings or after 6 p.m.

When it comes to air travel, nearly 3.4 million travelers are expected to fly for the holiday weekend, an 11 percent increase compared to last year and a 5.4 percent increase compared to pre-pandemic in 2019. In fact, the Memorial Day weekend could be the busiest for airports since 2005, according to the report.

That’s on par with a recent report from Hopper that showed international airfare is expected to reach a 5-year high this summer with the increase attributed to a combination of lower supply, high fuel costs, and high demand. And just last month, Delta reported its international flights were already 75 percent booked for the summer.

Other modes of transportation are also seeing a bump with 1.85 million people expected to take a bus or train, a 20.6 percent increase compared to 2022. And domestic cruise bookings are up a whopping 50 percent compared to last year (with port cities in Florida, Alaska, and Seattle in high demand for summer).

“We are seeing a demand for iconic cities, international vacation packages, and cruises with included amenities that provide more value for the price,” Twidale said.

Memorial Day weekend travel may be busier than last year. Here's how to avoid stress

memorial weekend air travel

If you’re planning to take a trip for Memorial Day weekend, you may want to brace yourself for busy airports and roads.

AAA expects 42.3 million Americans to travel 50 miles ‒ or more – from their homes over the holiday weekend, the membership organization said Monday. That number is up 7% from 2022.

“This is expected to be the third busiest Memorial Day weekend since 2000, when AAA started tracking holiday travel,” Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, said in a  news release . “More Americans are planning trips and booking them earlier, despite inflation. This summer travel season could be one for the record books, especially at airports.”

AAA’s forecast defines the Memorial Day travel period as May 25-29.

What can travelers expect during Memorial Day weekend?

The organization predicts that more travelers will fly to their destinations this year, with close to 3.4 million traveling by air. That number is up 11% from last year. “This Memorial Day weekend could be the busiest at airports since 2005,” AAA said in the release.

The holiday is also expected to see 170,000 more flyers than in 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the organization.

Road trips are up as well, with 37.1 million U.S. travelers expected to get to their destinations by car, a 6% increase from 2022.

“Gas prices are lower this holiday compared to last year, when the national average was more than $4 a gallon,” AAA said. “Despite the lower prices at the pump, car travel this holiday will be shy of pre-pandemic numbers by about 500,000 travelers.”

A predicted total of 1.85 million travelers will take other types of transportation, such as trains and buses, up nearly 21% from last year.

What are the best times to drive for Memorial Day?

INRIX, which works with AAA on holiday travel projections, expects roads will be busiest on Friday, May 26.

The best times to travel by car on Thursday, May 25, and Friday are before 1 p.m. and noon, respectively, while the worst times are between 3 and 6 p.m, according to the transportation data and insights provider.

Traffic is likely to be lightest on Saturday, May 27, and Sunday, May 28, with minimal impacts.

The best time to travel by car on Monday, May 29, is before 10 a.m., while the worst time is between noon and 3 p.m.

Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, said drivers can expect significant delays, particularly in and around major metropolitan areas, as travelers and commuters mix.

“Knowing when and where congestion will build can help drivers avoid the stress of sitting in traffic,” he said in the release. “Our advice is to avoid driving during peak hours or use alternative routes.”

Cape May, New Jersey

People bike and walk in front of traditional villas in Cape May, New Jersey, on a sunny summer day.

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of tourist season in Cape May , and it's no surprise why. A quintessential summertime escape for many Americans, this historic seaside town boasts pleasant temperatures in the 70s come late spring. Cape May also played a significant role in military defense during World War II. Just keep in mind that traffic jams are common – especially during the busy season – so be sure to plan your drive accordingly.

Travelers will enjoy stretching out along Cape May's beaches, strolling through the Washington Street Mall and admiring well-preserved Victorian architecture adjacent to the shoreline. You can also visit Emlen Physick Estate – the town's only Victorian-era house museum – or see historic war planes at the Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum.

Where to stay: You won't find chain hotels in Cape May, but you can stay at a darling bed-and-breakfast, a boutique hotel like The Virginia Hotel & Cottages or a rental cottage.

New York City

Aerial of the Central Park in New York with golf fields and tall skyscrapers surrounding the park.

New York City is the perfect place for a last-minute, long-weekend trip – especially if you're car-free. Pack your walking shoes and plan to visit one world-class site after another on foot or by subway. Must-see attractions include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, St. Patrick's Cathedral and – of course – Times Square. May is also one of New York's most pleasant times of year (if you don't mind a chance of rain). Expect daytime highs in the upper 60s, perfect for a stroll through Central Park or along the High Line.

Special Memorial Day events include the Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade and Fleet Week, when civilians can tour naval ships and meet members of the U.S. Navy, the Marine Corps and the U.S. Coast Guard. New York City beaches also open to the public on this weekend. When it's time to dine, you'll find an endless list of establishments, from historic bagel shops to under-the-radar delis to Michelin-starred restaurants.

Where to stay: You can find all kinds of lodging options in New York – just be sure to book early, as rates can get expensive. One top option is The Beekman, A Thompson Hotel in Manhattan.

Annapolis, Maryland

Main Street in downtown Annapolis, Maryland, in the evening.

Travelers looking to pay tribute to military men and women this Memorial Day can do so in the waterfront city of Annapolis . Get outside to watch the Memorial Day Parade down Main Street, or stroll through the rest of Annapolis' historic downtown, where you're bound to see rows of American flags.

If you're looking for a bit more space to stretch out, head to Quiet Waters Park. Spanning 340 acres, the park is ideal for biking, kayaking, picnicking or simply admiring panoramic views of the South River in late May's pleasant temperatures (high 70s to 80s). Bicycle and boat rentals are available on-site and nearby. When hunger strikes, head to Boatyard Bar & Grill or Carrol's Creek Cafe for delicious seafood.

Where to stay: Accommodation options in Annapolis range from modern outposts like Graduate Annapolis to picturesque bed-and-breakfasts to vacation rentals downtown or near the water.

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Winter sunrise in Dewey Beach, Delaware.

Ring in the start of summer on the shores of Rehoboth Beach . Calm waters and temperatures in the mid-70s to low 80s make this Delaware beach town a great kid-friendly option, and travelers of all ages will enjoy walking down the mile-long boardwalk filled with restaurants and shops.

When you're not sunbathing on the sand or relaxing on the balcony of your vacation rental or hotel room, head to Cape Henlopen State Park to fish, hike and bird-watch. The Funland amusement park is another staple in the area that opens for the season in May, and some shopping at Tanger Outlets is a must when you need a break from outdoor activities.

Where to stay: The Avenue Inn and Spa , located a block from the beach and boardwalk, is a top lodging option in Rehoboth Beach.

Washington, D.C.

The White House and Lafayette Square in Washington, D.C.

When it comes to celebrating the true reason behind Memorial Day, nowhere is quite as patriotic as Washington, D.C. Honor military personnel with a visit to Arlington National Cemetery, where more than 400,000 fallen soldiers and veterans (plus their family members) are buried. On the National Mall, wander along the long granite wall of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to read the names of more than 58,000 Americans who died during the Vietnam War. Then, head to the World War II Memorial to pay tribute to those who perished on the battlefields. Average May temperatures in the nation's capital tend to sit in the mid-70s to mid-80s.

Where to stay: After a long day of exploring, head back to a luxury hotel – a great option is The Hay-Adams – or more budget-friendly Airbnb.

Austin, Texas

Aerial of river and greenery with Austin skyline in the background.

Visit the Lone Star State for an authentic Memorial Day weekend experience, complete with mouthwatering Texas barbecue, temperatures in the 80s and 90s, and plenty of time spent enjoying the great outdoors. Austin offers something for everyone, from kayaking in Zilker Metropolitan Park (rental boats are available on-site) to learning about the state's history at the Texas Capitol in central Austin. The Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail at Lady Bird Lake is another beloved natural area where travelers and locals alike can explore quiet trails and picnic along the edge of the water.

Where to stay: Bed down at a hotel like The Driskill , an Airbnb or even a campsite in nearby Texas Hill Country.

Charleston, South Carolina

The Waterfront Park Pineapple Fountain in Charleston, South Carolina, at sunset.

Cobblestone streets, centuries-old oak trees and historic architecture make Charleston a charming getaway year-round. But visiting during Memorial Day weekend means you'll see the city at its best (albeit usually its busiest) before the oppressive summer heat sets in. Average May temperatures sit in the 70s and 80s, rain is minimal, and colorful gardens are in full bloom.

Learn about the history of the city as you cruise through the Charleston Harbor on a boat tour , or admire the flora and fauna of Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. If your holiday weekend experience won't be complete without a beach trip, head to nearby Folly Beach (a little more than 10 miles south of the city) or Sullivan's Island (less than 10 miles southeast) for a day.

Where to stay: Retire for the evening at a luxurious hotel , such as The Spectator Hotel, or stay in one of many quaint vacation rentals to save some cash.

Big Bear Lake, California

Reflections in the waters of Big Bear Lake at Boulder Bay, California, with vacations houses and mountain ridges in the background.

By late May, travelers can typically bid farewell to snowfall in Big Bear Lake and say hello to pleasant temperatures in the low 70s. Located in the San Bernardino National Forest in Southern California, about 80 miles northwest of Palm Springs, laid-back Big Bear Lake separates itself from typical long-weekend beach destinations with its endless outdoor activities, including fishing, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking and paddleboarding. Canoes, kayaks and other equipment rentals are available from a bevy of local sports shops dispersed throughout Big Bear Lake. Although there are a few small swimming beaches on the lake, including Meadow Park, keep in mind that the water is fairly chilly year-round.

Where to stay: When it comes to lodging, take your pick from multiple resorts, inns, vacation homes, cabins and lodges. One top option downtown is Sierra Blue Hotel & Swim Club. If you plan to travel with your pet , Big Bear Lakefront Cabins offers pet-friendly cabins with amenities like hot tubs and swimming pools overlooking the lake or lush mountains.

Colorado flags hanging in Larimer Square, Denver.

Celebrate Memorial Day weekend in Denver to enjoy the city's 70-degree weather, as long as you're willing to put up with a little rain (May is typically the city's wettest month, seeing about 2 inches of rainfall on average). Travelers can wander through the Denver Botanic Gardens or explore Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre, a naturally formed outdoor venue with on-site hiking trails. If you're looking for a great place to bring kids, head to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, which boasts exhibits about animals, mummies and outer space, all in one venue.

Where to stay: As far as lodging goes, vacationers will have their pick of swanky options such as The Oxford Hotel and airy rental lofts in the heart of downtown.

Tips on Trips and Expert Picks

Travel tips, vacation ideas and more to make your next vacation stellar.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Moulton Barn in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming.

Though temperatures are typically still creeping their way into the mid-60s come Memorial Day, visiting Jackson Hole during this shoulder season promises exceptional wildlife-viewing opportunities (think: eagles, bison and moose), cheaper hotel rates and fewer crowds to contend with. Spring also signals the reopening of many park roadways in the nearby Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks, as well as the start of whitewater rafting season. Granite Hot Springs Pool reopens for the summer season in late May, so travelers can plan on taking a dip in the steamy 93-degree thermal pool after a fun day of hiking and exploring.

Where to stay: Opt for a rustic cabin to fully embrace Jackson Hole's changing seasons in the wilderness, or pump up the opulence with a stay at a luxury resort such as Rustic Inn Creekside Resort & Spa at Jackson Hole .

Aerial of the Las Vegas Strip at twilight.

Kick off the unofficial start of summer with a trip to Sin City. For an adults-only getaway, travelers can hit the slots, party the night away at a high-energy nightclub or live music venue, and enjoy a few cocktails under the sun at one of Las Vegas ' rowdy pool parties. Late May temperatures typically feature highs in the 90s and lows in the 60s.

Beyond walking around the Strip, popular things to do include visiting the Sphere (a unique new attraction opened in 2023) and taking day trips to more family-friendly outdoor destinations, such as the Grand Canyon , the Hoover Dam and Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. You can also consider a Las Vegas tour ; fun options range from open-top nighttime bus tours around the city to scenic helicopter rides to food tours sampling a variety of treats.

Where to stay: You can't go wrong with any of the city's iconic resorts or themed hotels if you're looking for the full Vegas experience. Still, some properties, such as the Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas , offer a little more tranquility than others.

Palm Springs, California

Brightly colored flowers along the water at a golf course in Palm Springs, California.

Trendy, colorful Palm Springs is an ideal spot for a Memorial Day weekend getaway. Springtime brings picturesque blooms of wildflowers, poppies and lilies, and visitors can enjoy popular attractions like the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway or The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens. You'll also have plenty of time for a round at the golf course, boutique shopping in the El Paseo Shopping District, and mouthwatering meals and cocktails at top-notch eateries .

To honor fallen soldiers over the holiday weekend, head to the Palm Springs Air Museum for its annual Memorial Day Flower Drop. At this event, a vintage warbird plane drops more than 3,000 carnations to the crowds below. While you might avoid Palm Springs ' roasting summer temperatures above 100 degrees, you should still expect May highs in the 90s – so plan accordingly for a hike through Joshua Tree National Park or other outdoor activities.

Where to stay: Most of the city's eclectic hotels, inns and bungalows offer on-site pools to cool off in – and the highly rated Holiday House Palm Springs is no exception.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Colorful, historical buildings on the coast of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico.

If you'd like to sink your toes in the sand, head to Condado Beach or Ocean Park Beach to bask in May's 80-degree temps.

You'll also have your pick of historic sites to peruse as well: Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal are two acclaimed forts that feature dungeons, tunnels and original cannons. When night falls, San Juan comes alive with pulsing nightclubs, bars and dance venues. A bonus: Americans do not need a passport to travel to Puerto Rico.

Where to stay: Lodging options here include a variety of hotels located either on or near the ocean, such as Condado Vanderbilt Hotel . You'll also find an array of modern, well-equipped vacation rentals with pools, city views and other amenities.

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

Aerial of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Head to St. Thomas for the feel of an international vacation with the ease of domestic travel (Americans don't need a passport to visit this U.S. territory). Though it's not the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands , St. Thomas is arguably the most popular of the three main islands. Since the major tourist season is from December to March, you may find discounted hotel rates and fewer crowds in May without sacrificing enjoyable temperatures in the 70s and 80s.

Traveler-favorite activities include swimming and snorkeling at Magens Bay and Coki Beach, plus shopping and strolling along duty-free Main Street. For panoramic views of nearby islands – including Puerto Rico, on a clear day – take a tram ride up to Paradise Point with your camera or smartphone in hand.

Where to stay: Marriott's Frenchman's Cove is a top lodging option in St. Thomas, complete with an infinity-edge pool and a waterslide.

Ocho Rios, Jamaica

With 42.3 million Americans hitting the road, Memorial Day travel will surpass 2019 demand

Becky Blaine

If you think Memorial Day weekend might be a busy one for travel, you'd be right. Before you pack a suitcase and hop in the car or take to the sky, here's what to expect by the numbers.

Busy weekend in the sky

Demand for flights on Memorial Day weekend is up nearly 10% compared to last year, according to recently released Expedia flight data. Top domestic destinations are New York, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. International flight sticker shock is real, especially when searching for cities like Rome and London.

According to AAA , air travel will exceed pre-pandemic levels for the same time frame. Nearly 3.4 million travelers are expected to fly to their destination this Memorial Day weekend, an increase of 11% over last year.

Meanwhile, airports are still understaffed , so the increase in passengers could mean longer lines at security checkpoints and even some challenges when it comes to getting the food you want in the terminals or even spots in the lounges.

On the plus side, the Transportation Security Administration has just rolled out new facial recognition software at select airports in the U.S., though it's yet to be seen if it will speed up the wait times.

memorial weekend air travel

"This is expected to be the third busiest Memorial Day weekend since 2000, when AAA started tracking holiday travel," Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, said. "More Americans are planning trips and booking them earlier, despite inflation. This summer travel season could be one for the record books, especially at airports."

More travelers are hitting the road

If you plan to drive this holiday weekend, prepare to share the road with 37.1 million other Americans with the same idea. AAA reports road trips are up 6% over last year — an increase of more than 2 million.

Likely not surprisingly, Friday, May 26, is expected to be the busiest day on the roads during the long weekend, according to the transportation analysts at Inrix.

If you do need to hit the road that day, the recommendation is to do so early in the morning or after 6 p.m. to avoid the most congested times. Major metro areas like Boston, New York, Seattle and Tampa are projected to have some of the nation's worst traffic, with travel times doubling compared to normal.

If you want to avoid that rush, Saturday and Sunday of the long weekend are also expected to have the lightest amount of road traffic.

Although it will be busy, there's good news for those opting for a road trip — average gas prices are down more than a dollar per gallon compared to last year. According to AAA , the current regular gas price average is $3.53 per gallon, while a year ago, it was $4.56.

We are also seeing luxury hotel pricing in the U.S. is easing somewhat , though that may not play out specifically for this particular in-demand weekend.

Travel tips from TPG

You can't control that tens of millions will travel out of town this weekend, but there's a lot within your control to make your trip a success. Here are some curated travel tips from the TPG team of travel experts.

  • Pack your patience and arrive early in case there are lines for checking bags or going through security.
  • Get TSA PreCheck or Clear to expedite your security screening. If you have both, you can choose the shorter line or use one that layers in both.
  • Travel with only a carry-on . It will save you money on baggage fees if you don't carry a cobranded airline credit card or hold elite status. You also won't have to worry about losing your luggage or facing challenges in the case of irregular flight operations.
  • Can't carry on? Use a tracking device for your bag , like an Apple AirTag, so you know where it is even if the airline doesn't. It has saved many bags for TPG writers and readers.
  • Consider taking the train instead of flying or driving. Fares might be better, it's more scenic, less hassle than the airport, and there's a better baggage allowance.
  • Take the first flight of the day . Usually, this means your plane has arrived the night before, so there's less chance of delays. Flying nonstop is also a great way to try and avoid any unexpected layovers.
  • Have a backup plan. Using points and miles to secure a backup flight if your original plan goes sideways might save your vacation if your travel plans are really tight. Just be sure to cancel before departure to get your miles redeposited in your account.
  • Use a credit card that carries travel protections like trip interruption and cancellation insurance. Even if you are traveling on an award ticket, if you pay the taxes on the ticket with one of these cards, you are covered.

Memorial Day weekend marks the start of busiest travel season; are we in for another chaotic summer?

Last Memorial Day weekend was the inaugural mess in a summer of air travel chaos. With significantly more Americans expected to head to airports this holiday weekend, the strained system is facing its first big seasonal crush. Are travelers in for another hellacious summer?

Some experts anticipate a smoother season for air travelers.

"I'm cautiously optimistic that we won't see a repeat of the flight disruption fiasco that kicked off summer 2022," said Scott Keyes, founder of travel site Going, formerly Scott's Cheap Flights.

Keyes puts his optimism down to "preventive measures" airlines are taking: Publishing more realistic schedules, building in buffers to limit cascading disruptions, trimming flights out New York's three busy airports and flying larger planes to still meet high demand.

The number of air travelers over the holiday weekend is expected to be up by 11% over last year, according to AAA's forecast, and up more than 5% over 2019 pre-pandemic volume.

Remember what pre-pandemic summer travel looked like?

"Summer has always been a period of discontent," said airline industry analyst Bob Mann, founder of R.W. Mann & Company, who noted that's been the case for him whether he was an airline executive or a passenger. It's a period of peak demand and resource-limited supply, he said.

One of biggest limitations right now: air traffic control staffing. The Federal Aviation Administration is about 3,000 controllers short of ideal staffing levels.

That might result in trouble for passengers.

"Full flights, hot cabins, everyone sharing an armrest, fewer flights than 2019 and even fewer flights in the Northeast due to FAA constraints mean limited options to re-accommodate passengers from delayed and canceled flights, meaning more passenger trip interruptions and disruptions," Mann said.

The Northeast isn't the only trouble spot. Recent CNN reporting revealed the extent and impact of understaffing at a key facility in Jacksonville, Florida, that handles airplane traffic into Florida and the Caribbean.

"Right now, about two out of every 10 ATC positions in the US are unfilled," said Kathleen Bangs, a former airline pilot and spokesperson for flight tracking site FlightAware. "You really need some of your most experienced controllers to man the busiest airspace."

And pilots are fed up - they're negotiating for more pay and threatening strikes.

Yet airlines and regulators have taken steps to ease pressure points, plus unruliness among passengers is trending downward. Add a lot of luck with the weather, and perhaps there's a better summer ahead.

Preemptive measures

First, the favorable tea leaves:

The FAA has rearranged East Coast flight routes to mitigate expected delays because of air traffic controller shortages, and airlines have trimmed their schedules at New York airports to account for the shortages. The FAA has also adopted new guidelines for commercial space launches that could otherwise add pressure to already-strained airspace in places such as Florida.

Bureau of Transportation Statistics data says that airlines have about 48,000 more employees than they did at this time last year, a sign that the staffing ramp up from massive cutbacks brought on by the pandemic is finally gaining steam.

"The combination of more trained employees on the job and less flights overall has helped avoid any airline meltdowns so far for 2023," said Bangs.

Mike Boyd, president of aviation forecasting and consulting firm Boyd Group International, doesn't foresee much trouble with airline operations this summer.

"I think it's going to be kind of a non-event. I really do. I don't think it's going to be anything for consumers really to worry about," Boyd said.

Air traffic control could be a different story.

Air traffic controllers are key

The FAA has warned that a controller shortage will affect travel this summer, particularly for New York's three major airports. And on Sunday and Monday, a controller shortage led to flight disruptions at Denver International Airport.

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby cited the shortage of air traffic controllers as his top concern heading into summer.

"This is the issue that limits the operations around the country. It's by far the biggest issue," Kirby told CNN's Poppy Harlow on CNN This Morning.

Controller shortages caused thousands of flight disruptions last summer. But many thousands more - the majority of disruptions - were caused by the airlines' operational challenges, which ranged from staff shortages to bad weather.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg spoke to the controller understaffing issue at a news conference on Tuesday. "It's a concern, and it's part of what motivates us right now to be putting so much emphasis on the recruiting, the hiring and the training," he said.

Buttigieg said that while the FAA works to remedy its issues, airlines have accounted for more of the delays, and they need to address their problems, too. He also noted that many have hired more employees in the past year.

"These airlines can be perfectly profitable while treating passengers better," he said.

The industry group representing airlines said it is "very concerned" about air traffic control staffing but is focused on completing flights.

"There's really not a lot of room for the blame game and finger-pointing," Airlines for America CEO Nick Calio told CNN. "There's a lot of reasons for cancellations. ... What if a staffing shortage at an air traffic control center causes a delay and the delay cascades? Who's responsible? So, you know our responsibility - everyone's responsibility - is to the passengers and the cargo."

While Boyd predicts relatively smooth operations for airlines, he called FAA staffing "another issue" and referred to the disruption this week in Denver.

"That might be a new dynamic. If that's the case, we might have some meltdowns, but it won't be airline-driven, it'll be FAA-driven," Boyd said.

And, of course, there's the weather factor.

"Summer always features lines of thunderstorms moving across the national airspace, disrupting air traffic, and this summer may include more of the even higher energy weather we increasingly see daily," Mann said.

Tips for smoother flights

Clearly, a lot of factors are outside a traveler's control. But with AAA expecting 3.4 million people to fly over the holiday period, every bit of preparation counts. The FAA is forecasting more than 51,000 flights on Thursday, which is expected to be the busiest day for flights. Federal officials anticipate the peak number of passengers on Friday.

Here's what you can do to prepare:

Fly direct and early in the day - on the first flight, if possible.

The weather is generally better in the morning, Keyes said, and your aircraft should be parked overnight so you won't be waiting on a plane. And you won't have risk missed connections flying direct.

If you have a connecting flight, Bangs says to make sure the time between connections is sufficient considering the distance between terminals, whether you're traveling with children and how quickly you can navigate a busy terminal with carry-on bags.

Check the big-picture weather. Bangs suggests reviewing the National Weather Service site in the days leading up to your flight for a broad overview of systems that could affect your plans. And download your airline's app for easy flight updates.

Know your rights. The Department of Transportation has created an online dashboard outlining what carriers will provide in various scenarios.

"If an airline cancels or significantly changes your flight - regardless of the reason why, even if due to bad weather - under federal law, you're entitled to a full cash refund if you no longer wish to travel," said Keyes.

Have a backup plan, even if it's a last resort.

"If you're on one of these carriers that only flies like three days a week to a destination, man, when they cancel, you better have a backup plan because airplanes do break, and if the next flight is next Tuesday and it's full, you've got a problem," Boyd said.

Bangs said that means having a plan for either continuing your trip or getting home.

"Anything ranging from enough balance on a credit card to purchase another ticket if necessary (while you sort things out later with the offending carrier) to trading in frequent flyer miles for a last-minute ticket if stranded," she said.

Here are more tips for navigating flight disruptions. Fingers crossed for smooth travels.

Memorial Day holiday US air passenger travel tops 2019 levels

A ir travel over the Memorial Day holiday weekend in the U.S. surged past pre-pandemic levels, according to recent figures from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

Nearly 9.8 million people were screened by TSA officers at airports nationwide from Friday through Monday, the TSA tweeted.

That's 300,000 more individuals compared with the same holiday weekend in 2019.

LYFT ROLLS OUT FEATURE TO MAKE AIRPORT PICKUPS FASTER

On Friday alone, about 2.74 million people passed through security checkpoints, up from the TSA's earlier projection of 2.6 million and the "highest post pandemic single day record," according to the TSA.

The figures aren't entirely surprising, as several industry experts signaled that demand will continue to surge this summer as people prioritize travel despite the uncertain economy.

AAA projected earlier this month that more than 42 million people would hit the road over the holiday weekend, signaling "what’s to come in the months ahead."

AIRBNB SHARES SINK ON OUTLOOK EVEN AFTER GROWTH JUMPS ON INCREASED BOOKINGS

More than 2 million people are already being screened daily, a significant uptick from last year, according to the TSA.

During the first quarter of 2023, officers screened more than 191 million passengers at security checkpoints nationwide, up 20.4% from the same period a year ago, according to the TSA.

Given the continued demand, airline industry officials say carriers have fixed problems that contributed to a surge in flight cancellations and delays last summer, when 52,000 flights were canceled from June through August.

Airlines have hired about 30,000 workers since then, including thousands of pilots, and they are using bigger planes to reduce flights but not the number of seats.

How to spend a perfect weekend in Moscow

Feb 11, 2020 • 5 min read

memorial weekend air travel

Moscow enjoyed the status of capital for most of Russia’s history, except for a relatively brief period (about two hundred years), when the Tsar and the government relocated to St Petersburg . But the Bolsheviks moved the capital back to Moscow in 1918, and today it’s an extremely diverse city. It can easily take a couple of weeks to see all of its sights, but if you've only got a weekend to explore, here's how to have two perfect days in Moscow.

Exterior of St Basil's Cathedral at Red Square on a sunny autumn morning.

Start your weekend in Moscow by acquainting yourself with top-notch Russian cuisine at Grand Cafe Dr Zhivago . Located on the first floor of the historical hotel National and overlooking the Kremlin, it’s definitely one of the best breakfast spots in the city. Try millet porridge with crawfish, pearl barley porridge with oxtail or traditional cottage cheese with raisins and candied fruit.

Set aside at least half a day for Russian capital’s major attractions: the Red Square and the Kremlin . To reach the Kremlin, cross the street from Dr Zhivago and walk through the Alexander Garden to the main entrance at the Kutafya Tower . Check out all the cathedrals, including Archangel cathedral with all the tsars’ tombs and Uspensky cathedral with medieval icons. Pause to look at the famous Tsar Bell and climb Ivan the Great Bell Tower to enjoy some great views.

Zaryadye - a landscape and architectural park. Many people stroll over concrete walkways surrounding a rounded building in parkland.

Exit and walk to the Red Square through the Alexander Garden, where, if lucky, you can see the change of guard. If you’re feeling hungry, stop by the food court at Okhotny Ryad shopping complex to pick up a snack.

The Red square is dominated by four buildings of equal historical importance: the Kremlin's most famous Spasskaya (Saviour) Tower , with a clock and fourteen bells that chime national anthem four times a day (6am, noon, 6pm, midnight), St Basil's Cathedral , Moscow's best-known symbol with its multi-colored domes, Lenin’s Mausoleum , the resting place of the leader of the 1917 October revolution, and GUM , Moscow's oldest department store, topped with a glass roof, designed by one of Russia's most celebrated architects, Vladimir Shukhov.

A guide to shopping in Moscow

Right behind the St Basil’s it is the relatively new Zaryadye Park , designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, famous for its work on the High Line in New York City. Zaryadye showcases flora from all the climate zones of Russia, which is the largest country in the world. The floating bridge at the edge of the park is one of the biggest selfie magnets in Moscow, providing spectacular views of the river and the city skyline as the background.

Another Zaryadye attraction is a glass pavilion that hosts restaurant Voskhod  (Sunrise) – a perfect spot for your lunch or early dinner. Voskhod focuses on dishes from all fifteen former Soviet Union republics and its inside looks like a Soviet-made spaceship with great views of the Moscow river. Try Azeri home-made pasta or trout from Lake Sevan in Armenia.

After all that walking and exploring you need some quality downtime and what better way to spend it than relaxing for a couple of hours at the famous Sanduny  traditional Russian hot bath. Make sure to get a massage with birch sticks!

You might still have time to go to Winzavod Center – a creative cluster with galleries housed at a former wine factory. Galleries like XL , pop/off/art and Ovcharenko always have something on, most likely a cutting-edge Russian contemporary art exhibition. Finish the evening hanging out at one of the best Moscow bars – try socialites’ paradise Noor Electro , co-joined with one of Moscow’s avant-garde theatres or Powerhouse Moscow , located in a 19th-century mansion, which is famous for live indie and jazz band performances. Both serve great food, too.

Young people sit on a bench looking at a large painting on the wall. It's by Russian artist Alexander Ivanov, called 'The appearance of Christ to the People' and is displayed in the Tretyakov gallery

Power up for a busy day ahead at one of Moscow’s trendiest coffee/breakfast spots,   Nude . Located in the upscale, well-heeled neighborhood of Patriarch’s Ponds, Nude offers a wide range of breakfast dishes, including scrambled eggs, toast, porridge and banana bread. Book ahead as it might be busy on a weekend morning.

After checking out the Patriarch's Ponds, which features prominently in Mikhail Bulgakov’s perennial novel The Master and Margarita , devote the rest of the morning and early afternoon to exploring Moscow’s best museums. Depending on your tastes, pick one of the following: Tretyakov Gallery for traditional Russian art, from medieval icons to the early 20th century;  New Tretyakov for 20th century and contemporary art as well as great temporary exhibitions;  Pushkin Museum for one of the greatest collections of Impressionist and post-Impressionist art in the world; and the Garage Museum for some eye-opening modern-art exhibitions.

A blurred train travelling at speed through a station with a tiled wall and a station guide.

Whichever museum or gallery you choose, be sure to go to LavkaLavka for lunch, certainly one of the best places to try new Russian cuisine, which is a contemporary reading of centuries-old recipes. It’s one of the few places to try polugar , which is, allegedly, what Russians called vodka in the 19th century.

When you talk about Russian culture, literary giants usually pop into mind: the likes of Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky and Anton Chekhov. There are plenty of literary museums in Moscow, but if you had to pick one, visit Tolstoy Estate Museum , located just opposite the headquarters of Yandex, the Russian equivalent of Google. Every little detail has been restored just the way it looked when Tolstoy lived here in the 1880s–90s.

Leave some time for exploring the Moscow Metro : every station is an architectural masterpiece in its own right. Our favorites include Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya and Kievskaya. Later, unwind at one of dozens of Moscow’s craft beer places . Try  Jawsspot , named after one of the leading breweries in Russia, Jaws from the Urals region, which also serves decent pizza and salads.

Engine cover falls off Boeing plane, hits wing flap; Southwest flight returns to Denver airport

memorial weekend air travel

A Southwest Airlines plane heading to Houston turned back to Denver International Airport on Sunday morning after an engine covering fell off the Boeing plane and hit the plane's wing flap, officials said.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the Boeing 737-800 plane returned to Denver safely around 8:15 a.m. local time and was towed to the gate.

The agency said it would investigate the incident. The plane's crew reported that engine cowling fell off during takeoff and struck the wing flap, the FAA said.

In a statement to USA TODAY, Southwest said passengers arrived in Houston on another aircraft, about three hours behind schedule.

"We apologized to those Customers for the inconvenience of their delay and our Maintenance teams are reviewing the aircraft. We place our highest priority on ultimate Safety for our Customers and Employees," the airline said in a statement.

According to data from FlightAware.com , the initial flight had taken off around 7:40 a.m. and was expected to land around 10:10 a.m.

Latest plane emergency landing

CBS News reported that the incident could be heard on air traffic control recordings.

"Let's go ahead and declare an emergency for Southwest 3695, and we'd like an immediate return," an air traffic control official could be heard saying on the recording, the outlet reported. "We've got a piece of the engine cowling hanging off apparently."

This is the latest in a string of recent incidents, where a plane has had to make an emergency landing due to mechanical issues. Late Thursday, a Southwest Airlines flight, a Boeing 737 plane, was preparing to depart to Las Vegas from Lubbock, Texas but returned to the gate before takeoff for a reported engine fire.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

U.S. issues travel warning for Israel with Iran attack believed to be imminent and fear Gaza war could spread

By Debora Patta , Tucker Reals

Updated on: April 13, 2024 / 5:25 PM EDT / CBS News

Update: Iran launched drone attacks against Israel on Saturday. Read CBS News'  latest coverage here .

Tel Aviv  — Israel is bracing for a worst-case scenario that U.S. officials believe could materialize within just hours — the possibility of a direct attack on Israeli soil by Iran in retaliation for a strike almost two weeks ago that killed seven Iranian military officers. Iran has vowed to take revenge for Israel killing its commanders, who were hit by an April 1 strike on the Iranian embassy in Syria's capital.

Two U.S. officials told CBS News that a major Iranian attack against Israel was expected as soon as Friday, possibly to include more than 100 drones and dozens of missiles aimed at military targets inside the country. Sources have told CBS News the retaliation could include attacks carried out both by Iranian forces, and proxy groups around the region that it has been funneling additional arms to for weeks.

The officials said it would be challenging for the Israelis to defend against an attack of that magnitude, and while they held out the possibility that the Iranians could opt for a smaller-scale attack to avoid a dramatic escalation, their retaliation was believed to be imminent.

Asked Friday how imminent he believes an attack is, President Biden responded, "I don't want to get into secure information, but my expectation is sooner than later." The president urged Iran not to move forward, saying his message to Tehran was: "Don't."

Tehran has not indicated publicly how or when it will return fire, so it's unclear how far Iran's leaders will go. If they decide to carry out a direct attack on Israel, there's fear it could blow Israel's ongoing war against Iranian ally Hamas up into a much wider regional conflict.

With the Iranian retaliation expected at any time, the U.S. State Department on Thursday warned Americans in Israel not to travel outside major cities, which are better protected from incoming rocket fire by the country's Iron Dome missile defense system. The latest guidance noted that travel by U.S. government employees in Israel could be further restricted with little notice as things develop in the tinderbox region.

"Whoever harms us, we will harm them," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Thursday as he visited troops at an Israel Defense Forces airbase. "We are prepared … both defensively and offensively."

Iran-Burning Flags Of The U.S. And Israel

On Saturday, all U.S. embassies in the Middle East were put on high alert and required to hold emergency action committee meetings. Diplomats in Lebanon and Israel were specifically told not to travel to certain areas within those countries.

Sima Shine, a security expert and former official with Israel's national intelligence agency Mossad, told CBS News it was a dangerous moment for the region, and the "most worried" she has been. She said anxiety over an all-out war was likely just as high "on both sides, in Israel and in Iran."

If Iran does choose to strike Israel directly, it could involve a complex missile and drone attack similar to the one Iranian forces launched against a Saudi oil facility in 2019 .

"They will try to do it on the military or some military asset," Shine predicted. "But the question will be the damage. If there would be many injured people, killed or injured … I think it has the potential for a huge escalation."

Iran- International Jerusalem Day Rally In Tehran

Shine stressed, however, that she still believes neither side actually wants a regional conflict.

U.S. "really trying to avoid war"

The U.S. sent a senior general to Israel this week to coordinate with the close American ally on any response it might make to an Iranian attack. Speaking Friday on "CBS Mornings," America's top military officer said, "we're really trying to avoid war."

"This is part of the dialogue that I have with my counterparts within the region, to include the Israeli chief of defense, who I talked to yesterday," said Joint Chiefs chairman Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr., adding that the U.S. military was "doing things not only to prevent a war, but at the same time, one of my primary things is to make sure all the forces in the region are protected."

"My role, as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, is to plan and prepare," Brown said. "That's one thing we do very well."

Brown's Israeli counterpart, Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, "completed a comprehensive situational assessment on the readiness of the IDF for all scenarios," Israel's military said Friday.

"The IDF is very strongly prepared, both offensively and defensively, against any threat," Halevi was quoted as saying in the statement. "The IDF continues to monitor closely what is happening in Iran and different arenas, constantly preparing to deal with existing and potential threats in coordination with the United States Armed Forces."

The IDF said the visiting U.S. general, Central Command chief Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, was taking part in the IDF's situational assessment.

The dilemma for Iran, said Israeli expert Shine, is to figure out how to deliver its promised response to Israel's attack in Syria, but in a way that does not lead to further escalation. Likewise, Shine said Israel could choose to show restraint when it responds to whatever Iran eventually does.

If either side gets the balance wrong, the consequences for the region, and even the world, could be dire.
