Upcoming Star Trek TV Shows: What's Ahead For The Sci-Fi Franchise

Here's what's ahead for Star Trek.

Michael Burnham on Star Trek: Discovery

It’s a golden era for Star Trek tv shows, as the franchise is churning out more content than ever before. Fans with a Paramount+ subscription can stream a plethora of old and new content from one of the greatest sci-fi franchises of all time.

There’s a ton of new Star Trek content coming in the future, including the debut of a new show as well as the return of all the ones fans already know well. For those who need a breakdown of what all to expect, look no further because here’s where and when all the new Trek will arrive in 2023 and beyond. There’s even some information on planned shows that aren’t quite ready yet, but hopefully, we’ll see them soon enough.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 - Finished April 20th, 2023

The final season of Star Trek: Picard has concluded, and the fans already want more. There have been calls for a spinoff titled Star Trek: Legacy , and for the franchise to bring back showrunner Terry Matalas to run it. Who knows if it'll happen, but one thing I do know is people will be talking about the success of Picard Season 3 and how it brought back together The Next Generation crew for a long time.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 - Ended August 10th, 2023

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is back for another season on Paramount+. Season 2 promised to raise the bar after its acclaimed Season 1, and so far, it’s lived up to the hype. In addition to major changes to canon and some unexpected romance , we were treated to an amazing   crossover with Lower Decks . It’s not all fun and games, though, as a rescue mission from the Gorn put a lot of lives at risk . We did see Montgomery Scott come aboard the Enterprise though, so hopefully he'll stick around in Season 3.

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 - Coming In 2024

Paramount+ originally renewed Star Trek: Prodigy for Season 2, but announced later that it had been canceled alongside other shows on the platform. While the news was a bummer to many and encouraged responses from stars like Kate Mulgrew , there is a silver lining. After some talk with other companies, Paramount managed to negotiate a deal where the series will transition over to Netflix , and Season 2 will release over there. At this time, it's unknown whether or not this will lead to more seasons of Prodigy , but fans are thankful they'll at least get to see the season that was being worked on coming up in 2024.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 - Premiering On April 4th 2024

Captain Michael Burnham and the crew are back, and based on what we've seen and heard about Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 so far, some changes are on the way. Season 5 will see the crew race against others in an attempt to secure an ancient power, and will apparently have a tonal shift that will skew more toward action and adventure. We also learned that this coming season will be the final adventure , as Paramount+ decided to end the series after this coming season. The final season will kick off in April and, fingers crossed, leave an avenue open for more stories with these characters in the 32nd century.

Section 31 Movie - Production Underway

Section 31 was one of the first Star Trek spinoffs announced after Discovery , and yet it took the longest to get off the ground. The series was supposed to Michelle Yeoh ’s Phillipa Georgiou and her efforts in the secret ops Starfleet faction that does the jobs that others in the organization would rather not know about. Other former Discovery stars, like Shazad Latif, were involved at one point, but some believed the odds of it happening aren't great after Michelle Yeoh's Oscar win .

It turns out Yeoh was interested in making it happen, and Paramount+ decided to alter the idea to a movie . Fans are excited about the project all the same, and ready to see Michelle Yeoh back in her role. Production on the film is officially underway, and it's looking like a premiere sometime in late 2024 to 2025 is likely.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3- Production Underway

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds filmed Season 1 and 2 right after one another, and apparently Paramount+ was so high on the series it decided to go ahead and green light Season 3 soon after. The series was in production for a while but paused during the WGA Writers’ Strike . Production resumed and is happening alongside Star Trek: Section 31, but it's still looking like we won't see the new season until at least 2025.

Starfleet Academy - Production Starting In 2024

Alex Kurtzman revealed not long ago that Star Trek is actively working on another new live-action series , and it’s going to be set at Starfleet Academy. Of course, we don’t know exactly what era this series is set to take place during or who is going to star in it yet. We don’t really know much of anything, though it’s worth noting that Star Trek: Discovery did write off its character Tilly when she took an offer at Starfleet Academy. The episode where that happened seemed like it could be a backdoor pilot for the show, but again, we have no idea. We do know that the writer's room is underway, but details are scant beyond that.

As shown above, there’s still a ton of Star Trek on the way in 2024, and beyond. The only way to watch these shows is with a Paramount+ subscription , which is totally worth picking up with the increasing amount of shows and movies available to watch.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Release Date

Premiere date prediction: Late 2022, Early 2023

We don’t yet have a release date for the third season of Patrick Stewart’s Star Trek , but it is currently in production (or, you know, hopefully ), so the wait between Season 2 and 3 will likely much shorter than the one between Season 1 and 2.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Announced

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Announced

You know a media company has a lot of faith in a new series when it gets a Season 2 renewal before it’s even premiered. This is the case with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , which hopefully means Paramount has liked what it has seen of its first season.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 Announced

Star Trek: Lower Decks will be back for a Season 4! The fourth season will consist of 10 episodes, and does not yet have a release date.

Star Trek Release Dates: When to Expect All the New and Returning Shows

James Whitbrook Avatar

Currently Airing: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2

The Enterprise is back after a successful first season , and this time Captain Kirk will be along for the ride with another appearance by Paul Wesley after his surprise finale role in season one. Not much else is known about the season so far, other than one episode will see the show crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks in a live-action/animated hybrid directed by The Next Generation ’s Jonathan Frakes. The show has also been renewed for a third season .

Season two recaps:

  • “ The Broken Circle ”
  • “ Ad Astra per Aspera ”
  • “ Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow ”
  • “ Among the Lotus Eaters ”
  • “ Charades ”

Upcoming: Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4

star trek show release dates

The third season of the animated series following the misfit crew of the USS Cerritos —and in particular its cadre of ensigns, Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Boimler (Jack Quaid), Tendi (Noël Wells), and Rutherford (Eugene Cordero)—once again followed our heroic ensigns and the remaining bridge officers aboard the Cerritos. Season four will be arriving in late summer . The show has also been renewed for a fifth season .

Upcoming: Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

star trek show release dates

Expected in early 2024 , Discovery ’s fifth season will be 10 episodes long, down from the 13 of prior seasons. In the wake of season four‘s climax earlier this year , Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) led her crew in a desperate attempt to save the galaxy from a mysterious anomaly created by an extra-galactic race, ensuring peace and stability for the Federation once more… for now. As her romantic partner Book (David Ajala) pays time for his own role in a campaign to surreptitiously destroy that anomaly, we’re not sure what awaits Burnham and Discovery ’s crew just yet, but given this show, we’re sure it’ll be very, very dramatic.

In Flux: Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2

star trek show release dates

The animated series aimed at younger Trek fans (and Janeway fans!) and kids at heart can be found on both Nickelodeon and Paramount+. The first season was divided into two parts, with part two wrapping up at the end of 2022; after Paramount+ announced it would not move forward with the show’s already greenlit season two , it was removed from the service . ( A home release of the complete first season is still possible ; the first 10 episodes are still available for purchase.) Fans are still waiting to hear if Prodigy season two will surface on a different outlet .

Upcoming: Starfleet Academy

It’s really happening! After a long tease, filming on this series will begin in 2024. Here’s the official announcement from co-showrunners and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau:

“Admission is now open to Starfleet Academy! Explore the galaxy! Captain your destiny! For the first time in over a century, our campus will be re-opened to admit individuals a minimum of 16 Earth years (or species equivalent) who dream of exceeding their physical, mental and spiritual limits, who value friendship, camaraderie, honor and devotion to a cause greater than themselves. The coursework will be rigorous, the instructors among the brightest lights in their respective fields, and those accepted will live and study side-by-side with the most diverse population of students ever admitted. Today we encourage all who share our dreams, goals and values to join a new generation of visionary cadets as they take their first steps toward creating a bright future for us all. Apply today!   Ex Astris, Scientia!”

Upcoming (movie): Star Trek: Section 31

star trek show release dates

Announced as a TV series back in 2019 as a spinoff for fan-favourite Discovery guest star Michelle Yeoh, this plunge into the seediest side of Starfleet—the shadowy spy organisation Section 31 first introduced in Deep Space Nine— is now planned as a Paramount+ film .

Newly minted Oscar winner Yeoh will return as former emperor of the Mirror Universe’s Terran Empire, Phillipa Georgiou, now turned into a kinder, but still kickass person by her time with Michael Burnham. “I’m beyond thrilled to return to my Star Trek family and to the role I’ve loved for so long,” Yeoh said in a statement. “ Section 31 has been near and dear to my heart since I began the journey of playing Philippa all the way back when this new golden age of Star Trek launched. To see her finally get her moment is a dream come true in a year that’s shown me the incredible power of never giving up on your dreams. We can’t wait to share what’s in store for you, and until then: live long and prosper (unless Emperor Georgiou decrees otherwise)!”

Written by Craig Sweeny and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, Star Trek: Section 31 will start production later this year, and eventually come to Paramount+.

Trekkies have a lot to be thankful for this year as the Star Trek franchise we all know and love shows no signs of slowing down!

As of now, there are four series in production within the entire franchise. Before streaming took over in the mid 2010s, there were only five broadcast series on air including The Original Series ,  The Next Generation ,  Deep Space Nine ,  Voyager , and  Enterprise . Now, with so many additions, both animated and live-action, it seems almost impossible to keep track of what to watch next, but you’ve come to the right place.

If you’ve been wondering when and where you can watch the current and upcoming seasons of Star Trek series and learn what anticipated films are set to be made, read on to find out!

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

The most recently released live-action series in the franchise received positive reviews and has already been ordered for a third season ahead of its second season release. Strange New Worlds is set a decade before the events of the original series in the 23rd century and offers up a contemporary take on the original series’ episodic storytelling and 1960s design choices.

The main cast includes Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun, Bruce Horak, and Rebecca Romijn as Number One. The second season will premiere on Paramount+ on June 15 .

Star Trek: Lower Decks

The adult animated series takes place in the late 24th century in the Star Trek universe, in which Earth is part of the multi-species United Federation of Planets and focuses on Starfleet’s least important starships, the USS Cerritos.

The main cast includes Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells, Eugene Cordero, Dawnn Lewis, and Jerry O’Connell. Even though the fourth season has yet to premiere, a fifth season was ordered in March 2023 and is already in development. Season 4 is scheduled to premiere on the streaming service Paramount+ in Summer 2023  with a 10-episode run.

Star Trek: Prodigy

Another wildly popular animated series in the franchise, Nickelodeon’s P rodigy is returning for a second season. The main cast includes Brett Gray, Ella Purnell, Jason Mantzoukas, Angus Imrie, Dee Bradley Baker, and Kate Mulgrew.

The series, which was met with positive reviews from critics and even received a Children’s and Family Emmy Award, has been airing since 2021. While an exact release date has not yet been set, season 2 will arrive this upcoming winter on Nickelodeon and Paramount+.

Star Trek: Discovery

The live-action series begins around ten years before the events of The Original Series which aired in the mid to late ’60s. The main cast includes Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Shazad Latif, Anthony Rapp, and Mary Wiseman. A final 10-episode fifth season was ordered in January 2022 and is expected to premiere on the streaming service Paramount+ in early 2024.

Star Trek 4

The long-awaited sequel to the 2016 film Star Trek Beyond was originally supposed to be released in December 2023 but has since been pushed back. It is unclear when the film will be released in theaters.

Star Trek: Section 31

This movie is based on the novels that explore the operations of the clandestine organization known as Section 31 and expected to be released on streaming platform Paramount+. The film stars Michelle Yeoh who first appeared in Star Trek: Discovery as Captain Philippa Georgiou. Yeoh returns as an alternate universe version of her character who is now named Emperor Philippa Georgiou. She’ll be the central character in this movie. It is yet to be announced when filming will start but keep your eyes peeled for a date soon!

That being said, the amount of Star Trek out in the world can make it tough to know exactly how to watch everything it offers in either chronological or release order so you don’t miss a thing. To help make things easier for you, we’ve created this guide to break down everything you need to know about engaging with this Star Trek journey.

It used to be a bit trickier to track down all the Star Trek shows and movies you’d need to watch to catch up, but Paramount+ has made it a whole lot easier as it has become the home of nearly all the past, present and future Star Trek entries.

So, without further ado, come with us into the final frontier and learn how you can become all caught up with the adventures of Kirk, Picard, Janeway, Sisko, Spock, Pike, Archer, Burnham, and all the others that have made Star Trek so special over the past 56 years.

And, in case you're worried, everything below is a mostly spoiler-free chronological timeline that will not ruin any of any major plot points of anything further on in the timeline. So, you can use this guide as a handy way to catch up without ruining much of the surprise of what’s to come on your adventure! If you’d prefer to watch everything Star Trek as it was released, you’ll find that list below as well!

How to Watch Star Trek in Chronological Order

  • How to Watch Star Trek by Release Order

1. Star Trek: Enterprise (2151-2155)

Star Trek: Enterprise is the earliest entry on our list as it takes place a hundred years before the adventures of Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the crew of Star Trek: The Original Series. The show aired from 2001 to 2005 and starred Scott Bakula as Jonathan Archer, the captain of the Enterprise NX-01. This version of the Enterprise was actually Earth’s first starship that was able to reach warp five.

While the show had its ups and downs, it included a fascinating look at a crew without some of the advanced tech we see in other Star Trek shows, the first contact with various alien species we know and love from the Star Trek universe, and more.

2. Star Trek: Discovery: Seasons 1 and 2 (2256-2258)

star trek show release dates

This is where things get a little bit tricky, as the first two seasons of Star Trek: Discovery take place before Star Trek: The Original Series but Seasons 3 and 4 take us boldly to a place we’ve not gone before. We won’t spoil why that’s the case here, but it’s important to note if you want to watch Star Trek in order, you’ll have to do a bit of jumping around from series to movie to series.

As for what Star Trek: Discovery is, it's set the decade before the original and stars Sonequa Martin-Green’s Michael Burnham, a Starfleet Commander who accidentally helps start a war between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire. She gets court-martialed and stripped of her rank following these events and is reassigned to the U.S.S Discovery.

3. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2259-TBD)

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds also begins before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series and is set up by Star Trek: Discovery as its captain, Anson Mount’s Christopher Pike, makes an appearance in its second season. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because Pike first appeared in the original failed pilot episode “The Cage” of Star Trek: The Original Series and would later become James T. Kirk’s predecessor after the original actor, Jefferey Hunter, backed out of the show.

Fast forward all these years later and now we get to learn more about the story of Christopher Pike and many other familiar faces from The Original Series alongside new characters. It’s made even more special as the ship the crew uses is the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, the very same that would soon call Kirk its captain.

4. Star Trek: The Original Series (2265-2269)

star trek show release dates

The fourth Star Trek series or movie you should watch in the order is the one that started it all - Star Trek: The Original Series . Created by Gene Roddenberry, this first Star Trek entry would kick off a chain reaction that would end up creating one of the most beloved IPs of all time. However, it almost never made it to that legendary status as its low ratings led to a cancellation order after just three seasons that aired from 1966 to 1969. Luckily, it found great popularity after that and built the foundation for all the Star Trek stories we have today.

Star Trek: The Original Series starred William Shatner as James T. Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as Spock, but the rest of the crew would go on to become nearly as iconic as they were. As for what the show was about? Well, we think Kirk said it best during each episode’s opening credits;

“Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise . Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.”

5. Star Trek: The Animated Series (2269-2270)

While Star Trek: The Original Series may have been canceled after just three seasons, its popularity only grew, especially with the help of syndication. Following this welcome development, Gene Roddenberry decided he wanted to continue the adventures of the crew of the Enterprise NCC-1701 in animated form, and he brought back many of the original characters and the actors behind them for another go.

Star Trek: The Animated Series lasted for two seasons from 1973 to 1974 and told even more stories of the Enterprise and its adventures throughout the Milky Way galaxy.

6. Star Trek: The Motion Picture (2270s)

star trek show release dates

The first Star Trek film was a very big deal as it brought back the crew of Star Trek: The Original Series after the show was canceled in 1969 after just three seasons. However, even it had a rough road to theaters as Roddenberry initially failed to convince Paramount Pictures it was worth it in 1975. Luckily, the success of Close Encounters of the Third Kind and other factors helped finally convince those in power to make the movie and abandon the plans for a new television series called Star Trek: Phase II, which also would have continued the original story.

In Star Trek: The Motion Picture, James T. Kirk was now an Admiral in Starfleet, and certain events involving a mysterious alien cloud of energy called V’Ger cause him to retake control of a refitted version of the U.S.S. Enterprise with many familiar faces in tow.

7. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (2285)

Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry had a sequel to Star Trek: The Motion Picture written, but Paramount turned it down after the reception to that first film was not what the studio had hoped for. In turn, Paramount removed him from the production and brought in Harve Bennett and Jack B. Sowards to write the script and Nicholas Meyer to direct the film.

The studio’s decision proved to be a successful one as Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is considered by many, including IGN, to be the best Star Trek film. As for the story, it followed the battle between Admiral James T. Kirk and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise vs. Ricardo Montalban’ Khan Noonien Singh. Khan is a genetically engineered superhuman and he and his people were exiled by Kirk on a remote planet in the episode ‘Space Seed’ from the original series. In this second film, after being stranded for 15 years, Khan wants revenge.

8. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (2285)

star trek show release dates

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock continues the story that began in Wrath of Khan and deals with the aftermath of Spock’s death. While many on the U.S.S. Enterprise thought that was the end for their science officer, Kirk learns that Spock’s spirit/katra is actually living inside the mind of DeForest Kelley’s Dr. McCoy, who has been acting strange ever since the death of his friend. What follows is an adventure that includes a stolen U.S.S. Enterprise, a visit from Spock’s father Sarek, a run-in with Klingons, and so much more.

9. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (2286 and 1986)

While it is undoubtedly great that Kirk and his crew saved Spock, it apparently wasn’t great enough to avoid the consequences that follow stealing and then losing the Enterprise. On their way to answer for their charges, the former crew of the Enterprise discover a threat to Earth that, without spoiling anything, causes them to go back in time to save everything they love. The Voyage Home is a big departure from the previous films as, instead of space, we spend most of our time in 1986’s San Francisco.

10. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (2287)

star trek show release dates

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier once again brings back our favorite heroes from Star Trek: The Original Series, but it’s often regarded as one of the weakest films starring Kirk, Spock, McCoy, etc. In this adventure, our crew’s shore leave gets interrupted as they are tasked with going up against the Vulcan Sybok, who himself is on the hunt for God in the middle of the galaxy.

11. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (2293)

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country is the final movie starring the entire cast of Star Trek: The Original Series, and it puts the Klingons front and center. After a mining catastrophe destroys the Klingon moon of Praxis and threatens the Klingon’s homeworld, Klingon Chancellor Gorkon is forced to abandon his species' love of war in an effort to seek peace with the Federation. What follows is an adventure that calls back to the fall of the Soviet Union and the Berlin Wall and serves as a wonderful send-off to characters we’ve come to know and love since 1966, even though some will thankfully appear in future installments.

12. Star Trek: The Next Generation (2364-2370)

star trek show release dates

After you make it through all six of the Star Trek: The Original Series movies, it’s time to start what many consider the best Star Trek series of all time - Star Trek: The Next Generation . The series, which starred Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, ran from 1987 through 1994 with 178 episodes over seven seasons.

There are so many iconic characters and moments in The Next Generation, including William Riker, Data, Worf, Geordi La Forge, Deanna Troi, and Dr. Beverly Crusher, and many of these beloved faces would return for Star Trek: Picard, which served as a continuation of this story.

While we are once again on the U.S.S. Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation, this story takes place a century after the events of Star Trek: The Original Series. However, there may just be a few familiar faces that pop up from time to time.

13. Star Trek Generations (2293)

While Star Trek Generations is the first film featuring the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew, it also features a team-up that many had dreamed of for years and years between Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Captain James T. Kirk.

Our heroes are facing off against an El-Aurian named Dr. Tolian Soran, who will do whatever is necessary to return to an extra-dimensional realm known as the Nexus. Without spoiling anything, these events lead to a meeting with these two legendary captains and a heartfelt-at-times send-off to The Original Series, even though not every character returned that we wished could have.

14. Star Trek: First Contact (2373)

star trek show release dates

Star Trek: First Contact was not only the second film featuring the crew from Star Trek: The Next Generation, but it also served as the motion picture directorial debut for William Riker actor Jonathan Frakes. In this film, the terrifying Borg take center stage and force our heroes to travel back in time to stop them from conquering Earth and assimilating the entire human race.

This movie picks up on the continuing trauma caused by Jean-Luc Picard getting assimilated in the series and becoming Locutus of Borg, and we are also treated to the first warp flight in Star Trek’s history, a shout-out to Deep Space Nine, and more.

15. Star Trek: Insurrection (2375)

Star Trek: Insurrection, which unfortunately ranked last on our list of the best Star Trek movies, is the third film starring the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew and followed a story involving an alien race that lives on a planet with more-or-less makes them invincible due to its rejuvenating properties. This alien race, known as the Ba’Ku, are being threatened by not only another alien race called the Son’a, but also the Federation. Captain Jean-Luc Picard and his crew disobey Federation orders in hopes to save the peaceful Ba’Ku, and while it sounds like an interesting premise, many said it felt too much like an extended episode of the series instead of a big blockbuster film.

16. Star Trek: Nemesis (2379)

star trek show release dates

The final Star Trek: The Next Generation movie is Star Trek: Nemesis , and it also isn’t looked at as one of the best. There are bright parts in the film, including Tom Hardy’s Shinzon who is first thought to be a Romulan praetor before it’s revealed he is a clone of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, but it also features a lot of retreaded ground. There are some great moments between our favorite TNG characters, but it’s not quite the goodbye many had hoped for. Luckily, this won’t be the last we’ll see of them.

17. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (2369-2375)

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is the fourth Star Trek series and it ran from 1993 to 1999 with 176 episodes over seven seasons. Deep Space Nine was also the first Star Trek series to be created without the direct involvement of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, but instead with Rick Berman and Michael Piller. Furthermore, it was the first series to begin when another Star Trek Series - The Next Generation - was still on the air.

The connections between The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine don’t end there, as there were a ton of callbacks to TNG in Deep Space Nine, and characters like Worf and Miles O’Brien played a big part in the series. Other TNG characters popped up from time to time, including Captain Jean-Luc Picard, and certain Deep Space Nine characters also showed their faces in TNG.

Deep Space Nine was a big departure from the Star Trek series that came before, as it not only took place mostly on a space station - the titular Deep Space Nine - but it was the first to star an African American as its central character in Avery Brooks’ Captain Benjamin Sisko.

Deep Space Nine was located in a very interesting part of the Milky Way Galaxy as it was right next to a wormhole, and the series was also filled with conflict between the Cardassians and Bajorans, the war between the Federation and the Dominion, and much more.

18. Star Trek: Voyager (2371-2378)

star trek show release dates

Star Trek: Voyager is the fifth Star Trek series and it ran from 1995 to 2001 with 172 episodes over seven seasons. Star Trek: Voyager begins its journey at Deep Space Nine, and then it follows the tale of Kate Mulgrew’s Captain Kathryn Janeway (the first female leading character in Star Trek history!) and her crew getting lost and stranded in the faraway Delta Quadrant.

The episodes and adventures that follow all see the team fighting for one goal: getting home. Being so far away from the Alpha Quadrant we were so used to letting Star Trek be very creative in its storytelling and give us situations and alien races we’d never encountered before.

That doesn’t mean it was all unfamiliar, however, as the Borg became a huge threat in the later seasons. It’s a good thing too, as that led to the introduction of Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine, a character who would continue on to appear in Star Trek: Picard and become a fan favorite.

19. Star Trek: Lower Decks (2380-TBD)

Star Trek: Lower Decks debuted in 2020 and was the first animated series to make it to air since 1973’s Star Trek: The Animated Series. Alongside having that feather in its cap, it also sets itself apart by choosing to focus more on the lower lever crew instead of the captain and senior staff.

This leads to many fun adventures that may not be as high stakes as the other stories, but are no less entertaining. There have already been three seasons of Star Trek: Lower Decks, and the fourth season is set to arrive later this summer.

The series is also worth a watch as it is having a crossover with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds that will mix the worlds of live-action and animation.

20. Star Trek: Prodigy (2383-TBD)

Star Trek: Prodigy was the first fully 3D animated Star Trek series ever and told a story that began five years after the U.S.S. Voyager found its way back home to Earth. In this series, which was aimed for kids, a group of young aliens find an abandoned Starfleet ship called the U.S.S. Protostar and attempt to make it to Starfleet and the Alpha Quadrant from the Delta Quadrant.

Voyager fans will be delighted to know that Kate Mulgrew returns as Kathryn Janeway in this animated series, but not only as herself. She is also an Emergency Training Holographic Advisor that was based on the likeness of the former captain of the U.S.S. Voyager.

The second season of Star Trek: Prodigy was set to arrive later this year, but it was not only canceled in June, but also removed from Paramount+. There is still hope this show may find a second life on another streaming service or network.

21. Star Trek: Picard (2399-2402)

star trek show release dates

Star Trek: Picard is the… well… next generation of Star Trek: The Next Generation as it brings back not only Partick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard, but also many of his former crew members from the beloved series. The story is set 20 years after the events of Star Trek Nemesis and we find Picard retired from Starfleet and living at his family’s vineyard in France.

Without spoiling anything, certain events get one of our favorite captains back to work and take him on an adventure through space and time over three seasons and 30 episodes.

The show had its ups and downs, but the third season, in our opinion, stuck the landing and gave us an “emotional, exciting, and ultimately fun journey for Jean-Luc and his family - both old and new - that gives the character the send-off that he has long deserved.”

22. Star Trek: Discovery: Seasons 3 and 4 (3188-TBD)

While Star Trek: Discovery begins around 10 years before Star Trek: The Original Series, the show jumps more than 900 years into the future into the 32nd Century following the events of the second season. The Federation is not in great shape and Captain Michael Burnham and her crew work to bring it back to what it once was.

Star Trek: Discovery is set to end after the upcoming fifth season, which will debut on Paramount+ in 2024.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds | Season 2 Official Trailer | Paramount+

The Enterprise is back after a successful first season , and this time Captain Kirk will be along for the ride with another appearance by Paul Wesley after his surprise finale role in season one. Not much else is known about the season so far, other than one episode will see the show crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks in a live-action/animated hybrid directed by The Next Generation ’s Jonathan Frakes. The show has also been renewed for a third season .

Season two recaps:

“ The Broken Circle ”

“ Ad Astra per Aspera ”

“ Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow ”

“ Among the Lotus Eaters ”

“ Charades ”

Upcoming: Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4

The third season of the animated series following the misfit crew of the USS Cerritos —and in particular its cadre of ensigns, Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Boimler (Jack Quaid), Tendi (Noël Wells), and Rutherford (Eugene Cordero)—once again followed our heroic ensigns and the remaining bridge officers aboard the Cerritos. Season four will be arriving in late summer . The show has also been renewed for a fifth season .

Upcoming: Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

Expected in early 2024 , Discovery ’s fifth season will be 10 episodes long, down from the 13 of prior seasons. In the wake of season four‘s climax earlier this year , Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) led her crew in a desperate attempt to save the galaxy from a mysterious anomaly created by an extra-galactic race, ensuring peace and stability for the Federation once more... for now.

Announced as a TV series back in 2019 as a spinoff for fan-favorite Discovery guest star Michelle Yeoh, this plunge into the seediest side of Starfleet—the shadowy spy organization Section 31 first introduced in Deep Space Nine— is now planned as a Paramount+ film .

The franchise tag deadline has come and gone, and Jori sees some clear winners and losers. Fitz and Jori point out Chris Jones and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as winners, while the Denver Broncos and Russell Wilson, the New York Giants and the free agent running backs are losers. Later, Fitz and Jori put quarterback-needy teams under the spotlight as they determine their level of trust in the franchises to execute their quarterback plan this offseason. They discuss the Las Vegas Raiders, Chicago Bears, Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos, Minnesota Vikings, Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants and Tennessee Titans.

Toyota wants hydrogen to succeed so bad it’s practically paying people to buy the Mirai

If you hurry, you can get $40,000 off a 2023 Toyota Mirai Limited, a fuel-cell vehicle that retails for $66,000. When you factor in the $15,000 in free hydrogen over six years and the available 0% interest loan, the new car would run you just $11,000. You buy the fuel cell, Toyota pays for the rest of the car.

'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Release Date Confirmed, More Trek Coming Soon

Paramount Plus announces new details for Trek shows Picard, Discovery, Lower Decks and Prodigy.

star trek show release dates

Captain Pike beamed into Star Trek: Discovery, and takes the helm of new show Strange New Worlds in May.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds boards the USS Enterprise on Thursday May 5, as streaming service Paramount Plus confirms release dates and further seasons for Trek series Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy and Discovery.

Although there are now five Trek TV shows in production, Strange New Worlds will be the first set aboard the iconic starship since Star Trek: Enterprise ended in 2005. Before the new show even starts this summer, it's been confirmed for a second series.

Strange New Worlds stars a crew first seen as guest stars in Discovery, including Anson Mount as Capt. Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romijn as first officer Number One and Ethan Peck as a young Mr. Spock.

Discovery was the first show to revive  Star Trek  for the streaming age, debuting on Paramount Plus when it was launched under the name CBS All Access. The series has now been renewed for a fifth season, ahead of the debut of new season 4 episodes on Thursday, Feb. 10.

Season 2 of Star Trek: Picard will premiere on Thursday, March 3. A third season is in production, although it was recently shut down when a large number of crew members tested positive for COVID.

There are also two animated Trek shows on at the moment. Irreverent animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks will return in summer 2022 with a 10-episode third season, and has been also been renewed for a fourth season. Star Trek: Prodigy, aimed at younger fans, is dropping new episodes every Thursday, with a further 10-episode second half of season 1 to be available later this year.

Star Trek: Discover the next generation of new and upcoming TV shows and movies set on the final frontier

If you're a Star Trek fan, you have a lot to look forward to on the TV and movie horizons

For close to 60 years, space has remained the final frontier for millions of Star Trek fans, tuning in on television, turning up in movie theaters, and now signing in for streaming to keep up with the latest adventures in the 23rd century and beyond. From the original Enterprise backwards and forwards through time and space, Star Trek has continued to explore the universe and the human condition, showing us both the best and worst parts of ourselves in the process.

Whether it’s William Shatner’s James T. Kirk, Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard, Avery Brooks’ Benjamin Sisko, or any of the subsequent commanders and captains of the many starships of Starfleet, generations of viewers have found themselves in good hands when it comes to navigating the outer limits of reality on a regular basis… and, these days, there are more opportunities than ever to transport into space for a trek of your own.

Even with 2023’s final season of Picard, there are no fewer than four ongoing Star Trek series right now — with even more on the way, and the return of the franchise to the big screen, with multiple movies in the works. There’s so much happening, in fact, that it’s easy to lose track… which is why you should keep reading and find out what to expect from Star Trek across the next few years. (Spoilers: the final frontier is getting a lot bigger.)

Upcoming Star Trek movies and TV show schedule

There’s no shortage of Star Trek in the pipeline for the next few years, but no official dates have been announced by CBS or Paramount for anything outside of Star Trek: Discovery season five coming in April. That doesn’t mean that we have no idea when some projects should be dropping, based on how far along they are in terms of production, or simply teases given by those involved.

Here’s a quick rundown of the projects that have been announced from Star Trek that exist on some form of schedule, however vague. (There are many unscheduled projects, which we’ll get to at warp speed, don’t worry.)

Scheduled Upcoming Star Trek TV Shows

Star trek: discovery, season five.

Star Trek

The series that re-launched the franchise in 2017 will be concluding with its upcoming fifth season, although that wasn’t the original plan during production , as it turns out. How will things end up for Michael Burnham, Sara, and the rest of the crew of the time traveling Starfleet flagship? We’ve only got a few months to wait before we’ll find out — the fifth and final season is scheduled for arrival in April 2024, although the exact date for the debut of the season remains unknown for now.

Release Date: April 2024

Platform: Paramount+

Star Trek: Prodigy, season two

Star Trek

While Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 was originally announced to debut on Paramount+ in the winter of 2023, Paramount+ has nixed those plans — but the show was picked up by Netflix, with new episodes already announced for some point in 2024. (The first season was added to the platform in December 2023.)

Release Date: TBD 2024

Platform: Netflix

Star Trek: Lower Decks, season five

Star Trek

A fifth season for the animated comedy set in the period between Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Picard was announced in April 2023, but no premiere date is known. Judging by the period between order and broadcast for the fourth season, however, it’s relatively safe to assume that a new season might be ready by the end of 2024, unless the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes of 2023 threw everything entirely off schedule.

Release Date: TBD 2024?

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, season three

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 art

As if the second season cliffhanger wasn't enough of a clue that the popular spin-off of Discovery - which is also a prequel to the original Star Trek series from the 1960s - would return, the show's third season renewal was announced back in April 2023 . But after a second season that included a half-animated crossover episode and a musical, how can they top what they've already achieved? No premiere date for the third season has been announced, but production is expected to run into summer 2024, meaning that we might have to wait until 2025 before seeing new episodes.

Release Date: TBD 2025?

Movies & TV Shows with No Approximate Schedule Yet

Star trek: section 31.

Star Trek: Section 31

Even before the character of Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) left the Discovery narrative, rumors of a Section 31 spinoff starring the Oscar Award-winning actress have swirled. In mid-April 2023, it was officially announced that a Star Trek: Section 31 “special movie event” starring Yeoh had been greenlit by Paramount+ .

Yeoh, who originated the idea for a Section 31 spinoff herself, will serve as executive producer with Alex Kurtzman. Additional details from the announcement include the fact that Section 31 will be written by Craig Sweeny and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi (director of many episodes of Discovery ). However, it remains to be seen what other familiar Trek characters may appear in the show, if any.

Release Date: TBD

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

Star Trek

In late March 2023, it was announced that Starfleet Academy season 1 had been ordered. Very few details have been revealed about the series, including confirmation that it will be live-action. However, the fact that the announcement refers to it being “the first time in over a century” that individuals will be admitted to the Academy implies the series will be set around the same time period as Discovery seasons 3, 4 and 5 : the 31st century.

However, we do know some of those behind the scenes who will be involved with Starfleet Academy. Serving as showrunners and executive producers will be Kurtzman and Noga Landau. Furthermore, in a Tweet sent shortly after the series order was announced, Lower Decks star Tawny Newsome revealed that she has joined the show’s writers room.

Star Trek 4

Star Trek Beyond

In April 2021, a new Star Trek movie was announced for release on June 9, 2023. It was subsequently revealed to be a fourth movie in the Kelvin Timeline. WandaVision alum Matt Shakman was attached to the project before he accepted the directorial role for the upcoming Fantastic Four MCU adaptation; he subsequently left the project, which placed it in turnaround. Long believed to be quietly dead, sources inside Paramount have recently said that it’s still active and in development.

Platform: Theatrical

Untitled Star Trek prequel

Having wowed fans with his work on Lucasfilm’s Andor series, director Toby Haynes is reportedly developing a new Star Trek movie set decades before J.J. Abrams’ 2009 reboot of the franchise , with writer Seth Grahame-Smith onboard to write. Little is known about the project beyond the fact that it would be a prequel set in the Kelvin Timeline, raising the question of just how much Nero’s interruption of the timeline actually impacted things… and whether said interruption went back in time, as well as forward.

Untitled Picard movie

Picard

The open question over what, if anything, Paramount would do to follow up on the success of the third and final season of Picard might have an answer. While Picard showrunner Terry Malalas had teased a new series called Legacy — see below — Patrick Stewart revealed in a recent interview that he’s heard of a movie script written specifically for Picard, although he hadn’t read it and couldn’t give any further details. Will this feature more of the reunited TNG cast, or is it something entirely different? And is it meant as a Paramount+ project a la Section 31, or a theatrical release? Time will tell…

Platform: TBD

Potentially Abandoned Projects

Quentin tarantino’s trek.

At one point, legendary director Quentin Tarantino was talking about directing an R-rated movie set in the Star Trek universe, with another writer working from an idea he had that was reportedly a time travel movie that would take inspiration from the original series episode ‘A Piece of the Action.’ Things progressed to a small degree with writer Mark L. Smith before Tarantino decided that he didn’t want to direct it, but the screenplay exists and Tarantino has said that he’d be willing to offer notes for any new director . We can but hope this oddity one day happens.

Star Trek: Legacy

One unannounced project remains at the forefront of Trekkie agendas everywhere: the proposed Picard semi-sequel, Star Trek: Legacy. The title was revealed by Picard season 3 showrunner Terry Matalas on Twitter in March 2023, while Picard’s wildly popular third season was being released. Matalas stated the proposed series would be set in the 25th century, following up on storylines and characters from “the Last Generation and the Next.”

While the series has yet to be officially commented upon by Paramount or CBS, fans have signed online petitions in support of the idea, and at least one Trek executive seems in favor; In interviews in support of Strange New Worlds season 2, Akiva Goldsman voiced his continued advocacy for a continuation of the vision Matalas has for the Franchise. “Let me put it this way,” Goldsman said during an interview with CinemaBlend. “I signed the petition too.”

It’s unclear whether or not the Picard movie project mentioned above is a variation on the Legacy idea, or an entirely separate project.

While there be a Star Trek 4 with Chris Pine?

A fourth Star Trek movie set in the Kelvin Timeline — the alternate timeline created with J.J. Abrams’ 2009 reboot of the franchise, featuring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Karl Urban as Kirk, Spock, and Bones, respectively — is in development, although it’s unclear at what stage at time of writing. It’s certainly stalled more than once with announced directors leaving the project, but both the studio and the stars have expressed their continued interest in making it happen, so… we’ll see.

What is the most current Star Trek?

The last new Star Trek to debut was the fourth season of the animated Star Trek: Lower Decks series on Paramount+. The last live-action Star Trek to arrive was the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, also on Paramount+.

What’s the next Star Trek series?

Unless the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy makes a surprise drop on Netflix in the next couple of months, the next anticipated Star Trek series will be the fifth season of Star Trek: Discovery, on Paramount+. The question of what the next Star Trek movie will be is somewhat open; logic would dictate that it would be the Section 31 movie on Paramount+, and we all know that Star Trek fans would rather pay attention to logic than anything else, right…?

Biggest star trek happenings in 2024: returning shows, movie updates & more.

Star Trek has a big 2024 planned with three TV series, a new Star Trek movie, podcasts, and numerous conventions to celebrate the franchise.

  • Star Trek fans have a lot to look forward to in 2024, with virtual and in-person conventions, Star Trek Day, podcasts, and new series announcements.
  • Despite uncertainties, the production of Star Trek: Section 31 and Lower Decks Season 5 are progressing smoothly.
  • The final season of Star Trek: Discovery is set to premiere in April 2024, marking the end of Captain Burnham's voyages.

Star Trek has a big 2024 on tap, and here are 8 things to look forward to from the final frontier this year. Although the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes halted Hollywood production and the ability of talent and creatives to promote their work for much of 2023, Star Trek had a phenomenal year. Star Trek: Picard season 3, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, and Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 released a cumulative 30 episodes, were highly acclaimed as some of the most innovative Star Trek in years, and many episodes charted in the Nielsen streaming Top 10. All in all, 2023 was a great year to be a Star Trek fan.

Significant questions loom over Star Trek in 2024, however. Paramount may be up for sale, which would certainly impact Star Trek on Paramount+'s various series and projects. There remains no new Star Trek theatrical movie in development, going on 8 years since Star Trek Beyond hit theaters in the summer of 2016. And there is no indication that Paramount+ will greenlight Star Trek: Picard 's proposed spinoff, Star Trek: Legacy , in spite of the same type of dedicated fan campaign that helped Star Trek: Prodigy jump to Netflix after it was canceled by Paramount+. The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes also delayed production of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, which likely won't premiere until 2025. Still, Star Trek has a massive 2024 planned , and here are 8 things for fans to be excited about.

10 Things We Want From Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3

8 star trek has amazing podcasts, the 7th rule, the shuttlepod show, inglorious treksperts, the delta flyers, and more.

Star Trek has podcasts to satisfy every type of fan , and they're available to watch on YouTube or stream wherever you get your podcasts. Walter Koenig joins The 7th Rule with Cirroc Lofton and Ryan T. Husk to discuss his episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series. The Delta Flyers: Through The Wormhole added Terry Farrell and Armin Shimerman, who join Star Trek: Voyager 's Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill to review episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nin e. Inglorious Treksperts hosts Mark A. Altman and Daren Dochterman continue their unrivaled expertise of classic Star Trek with podcasts and live panel shows. Sadly, The Shuttlepod Show 's co-host Dominic Keating has left the podcast, but hosts and producers Connor Trinneer, Erica LaRose, and Mark J. Cartier will continue to dive deep into the lives and careers of their illustrious Star Trek guests. Star Trek fans have a wealth of podcasts to enjoy in 2024, with new episodes weekly.

Walter Koenig Interview: Star Trek The Original Series & The 7th Rule Podcast

7 star trek virtual & in-person conventions, trektalks, virtual trek con 5, the llapy awards, stlv, and more.

Star Trek has a connection to its fans unlike any other in entertainment, and thanks to the various Star Trek conventions, both virtual and in-person, Star Trek fans have the privilege and ability to meet and hear from their favorite talent and creatives. Star Trek essentially pioneered the fan convention and 2024 kicks off with two huge virtual events: TrekTalks 3 , hosted by John Billingsley of Star Trek: Enterprise and Bonnie Gordon of Star Trek: Prodigy, streams live on YouTube on January 13th with a full day of panels featuring over 30 Star Trek guests, all to benefit the Hollywood Food Coalition. TrekTalks 3 will also feature a can't-miss Star Trek: Picard season 3 panel.

Virtual Trek Con 5 , from Cirroc Lofton of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , Ryan T. Husk, and The 7th Rule podcast, streams on YouTube from February 15-19 with 4 days of Star Trek panels with numerous special guests. VTC5 is capped off by the 3rd annual LLAPy Awards , the only Star Trek awards show voted on by fans , which streams live on YouTube on Sunday, February 19. For in-person Star Trek cons, two of the biggest are Creation Entertainments ST:SF in San Francisco in March and STLV: Trek to Vegas in Las Vegas in August, both featuring dozens of Star Trek talent. And, with no strikes this year, Star Trek on Paramount+ will no doubt return once again with huge panels at San Diego Comic-Con in July and New York Comic-Con in October.

6 Star Trek Day 2024

Star trek celebrates the franchise in person again.

2023 sadly saw Paramount+'s annual in-person Star Trek Day event canceled because of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Since 2021, Star Trek Day has been a celebration of the franchise bringing together talent and creatives from Star Trek on Paramount+'s series and Star Trek 's legacy shows and films. Held at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles and streamed on Paramount+ and Star Trek 's social channels, Star Trek Day is expected to return in September 2024, with a likely agenda of honoring the departing Star Trek: Discovery and looking ahead to Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 and more.

Screen Rant was on the red carpet for Star Trek Day 2022 .

5 Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Announcements

Expect information about the newest star trek series.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy was announced by Paramount+ in April 2023, and nothing more is known about the newest upcoming Star Trek series besides the fact that Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau ( Nancy Drew ) are the showrunners, and the writers' room includes Tawny Newsome of Star Trek: Lower Decks . 2024 should finally see more information about Starfleet Academy, which will hopefully announce the actors/characters of the show, and perhaps even confirm that Starfleet Academy is set after Star Trek: Discovery season 5 , as expected.

4 Star Trek: Section 31

Star trek's first made-for-streaming movie..

Announced in April 2023, Star Trek: Section 31 finally begins production from January to March in Toronto for a possible release in late 2024. Section 31 stars Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh , who reprises her Star Trek: Discovery anti-hero, Emperor Michelle Georgiou, and Yeoh used her clout from her Best Actress Oscar to ensure Section 31 is made. Star Trek: Section 31 is directed by Olutande Osunsanmi and written by Craig Sweeny, but nothing else is known about the first Star Trek movie made exclusively to stream on Paramount+ . Section 31 's potential success could lead to the plan for a new Star Trek streaming movie every 2 years to come to fruition. Even if Star Trek: Section 31 doesn't premiere in 2024, fans should at least finally learn what other characters are in the movie and what era of Star Trek Section 31 is set in.

3 Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5

Premieres in 2024 on paramount+..

Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 may have been the animated comedy's best season yet, and hopes are high that Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 will top it. The SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes didn't affect the production of the animated series, and Star Trek: Lower Decks was able to complete its scripts, with 10 new episodes in production for the show's traditional late summer/early fall release date on Paramount+. Little is known about the stories planned for Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 and the newly-minuted junior Lieutenants of the USS Cerritos, except that there will be more exploration of the Orion culture through the eyes of former Lt. D'Vana Tendi (Noel Wells). And while there are fears that season 5 could be the last for Star Trek: Lower Decks, hopefully, the 2023 crossover with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds created more fans of Lower Decks, and creator Mike McMahan's hilarious animated show can continue for years to come.

2 Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 - The Final Season

Premieres april 2024 on paramount+..

The only live-action Star Trek series on Paramount+'s 2024 schedule, Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is the final season marking the end of the voyages of Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery. It was Star Trek: Discovery' s success on CBS All-Access, which became Paramount+, that led to Star Trek 's current TV renaissance. Although Discovery season 5 was not originally planned as the final season, following Paramount+ canceling the series in March 2023, reshoots were completed to turn Discovery 's season 5 finale into a proper ending for the entire series . Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is also a shift in tone to an Indiana Jones -like intergalactic treasure hunt adventure, according to Jonathan Frakes, who directs the penultimate episode of Discovery . Premiering in April 2024, Star Trek: Discovery will be the Star Trek event on Paramount+.

8 Star Trek: Discovery Things To Know Before Season 5

1 star trek: prodigy season 2, premieres in 2024 on netflix.

With a huge global audience discovering the all-ages animated series on Netflix, Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 is possibly the most anticipated Star Trek event of 2024 . Netflix premiered Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 on Christmas Day, priming viewers new and old for 20 all-new Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 episodes from creators and showrunners Kevin and Dan Hageman and their team. Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 promises to go even bigger than season 1's high stakes, taking Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and the young ragtag former crew of the USS Protostar into an alternate 25th-century future and beyond. Star Trek: Prodigy season 2's massive scope will reportedly touch upon the entire Star Trek franchise, and the already-announced new castmember The Doctor (Robert Picardo) as well as the new USS Voyager-A are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the surprises, fun, and adventure Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 has in store.

Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Lower Decks are streaming on Paramount+. Star Trek: Prodigy is streaming on Netflix.

From low-budget romps to high-energy blockbuster films,  Star Trek  has become one of the most influential sci-fi franchises of all time. While  Trek  has decades worth of TV, film, and animated iterations that might rival  Star Wars , it also has its own unique legacy and long-time, passionate cult following (and merch ).

With the release of  Star Trek : Discovery in 2017, the Trek television universe has become one of the highlights of original programming on  Paramount+ . Unlike Kevin Feige ‘s aggressive rollout of new shows for Phase Four of the  Marvel Cinematic Universe on Disney+,  Paramount+  has done particularly well with releasing short series over the past few years for this newest wave of  Star Trek . Helmed by Alex Kurtzman, series like  Star Trek: Lower Decks  and  Picard  have pushed the boundaries of what can be done with the universe’s canon in their first seasons so far.

'Star Trek III: The Search for Spock' Gets 40th Anniversary Steelbook This Spring

Join the search this May.

The Big Picture

  • Celebrate Star Trek III' s 40th anniversary with a new Steelbook edition featuring original teaser poster artwork and a 4K restoration.
  • Join the original Star Trek cast on a mission to resurrect Spock in this iconic third installment directed by Leonard Nimoy.
  • Preorder the exclusive Walmart edition for a poster and booklet, and stay tuned for more special features to be revealed.

With its 40th anniversary around the corner, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock is coming to stores in a new Steelbook edition. TrekCore.com reports that several online retailers are now offering preorders for the Steelbook edition of the film, which will be available later this year. The new case features the artwork of a spectral Spock that decorated the film's original teaser posters, while the interior artwork features the film's most shocking moment; the destruction of the original USS Enterprise . The disc inside will feature a 4K restoration of the original film; additional special features have yet to be revealed. Walmart is also offering an exclusive edition of the film that will come with a poster of the film's key art and an exclusive booklet.

First released in the summer of 1984, The Search for Spock was the third film to reunite the original Star Trek cast, including William Shatner , Leonard Nimoy , DeForest Kelley , Nichelle Nichols , George Takei , James Doohan , and Walter Koenig . It was Nimoy's directorial debut, and forms a loose trilogy with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home .

What Happens in 'The Search for Spock'?

Following Spock's seeming self-sacrifice at the end of Wrath of Khan , his body was laid to rest on the Genesis Planet, a world in the process of being terraformed by advanced technology. However, before dying, Spock placed his psychic essence inside Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy (Kelley), and it needs to be reunited with its body. Unfortunately, the Genesis Planet has been declared off-limits by the Federation, so Captain James T. Kirk (Shatner) and his crew have to steal the Enterprise to get there. Kirk's son, David Marcus ( Merritt Butrick ) and his Vulcan ally, Saavik ( Robin Curtis , replacing Wrath of Khan 's Kirstie Alley ) are already on Genesis with a research team, and find themselves in deadly danger when rogue Klingon warlord Kruge ( Christopher Lloyd ) seeks the power of Genesis for himself. To resurrect his lost friend, Kirk may have to sacrifice everything he holds dear...

The Search for Spock was a success for Paramount, although with a gross of $87 million USD on a $16 million budget, it grossed less than Wrath of Khan or Voyage Home . Although reviews at the time were mixed, it has subsequently become viewed as an exception to the "rule" that odd-numbered Star Trek movies are disappointing, while even-numbered ones are good.

The Star Trek III: The Search for Spock Steelbook is available for preorder now at a variety of online retailers , and will be released on May 28. Check out the artwork below and stay tuned to Collider for future updates. In the meantime, you can stream Star Trek III: The Search for Spock on Max in the U.S.

What To Look Forward To From Star Trek In 2024

star trek show release dates

| January 4, 2024 | By: Anthony Pascale 112 comments so far

2024 has arrived and it will be another interesting year for Star Trek. We know some of what is to come, but due to a number of factors, much of what fans can expect in this new year is up in the air. The following breaks down what we know, think we know, and want to know about Star Trek in 2024.

Discovery season 5

When it comes to Star Trek on TV, the only thing with an official time set for this year is the fifth season of Star Trek: Discovery . Paramount+ will premiere the 10-episode season in April, although they have not yet given a specific date. Last year, after the season was produced, Paramount decided to make it the final season of the series but gave the team a chance to write and shoot a new ending, turning the season finale into a series finale, which showrunner Michelle Paradise says is “satisfying.” Season 5 of the show will bring a new shift to a more “fun” tone, with more episodic adventures built into the season arc about “uncovering a mystery.”

Prodigy season 2

The first season of the animated Trek series focused on younger audiences was removed from Paramount+ last summer, then landed on Netflix on Christmas Day last month. Work on the second season of Prodigy continued while Paramount searched for a new home for the show, with that work also wrapping up in December. Netflix has announced season 2 will arrive in 2024, but they have not yet set a specific date or announced if or how they would split up the 20 episodes. The second season will see two main storylines as Gwyn heads off to her homeworld to try to stop the coming conflict with Starfleet and the rest of the kids join Admiral Janeway on the brand new USS-Voyager-A on the hunt to find Chakotay, trapped on that same homeworld in the future. Star Trek: Voyager ‘s Robert Picardo joins the show in season 2 as The Doctor hologram and minder of Dal, Zero, and Rok-Tahk.

Lower Decks season 5

There has been a new season of the adult animated comedy  Lower Decks  released each summer for the last four years, and that pattern should continue this year. Work on the fifth season is ongoing; however, voice recording was paused during the SAG-AFTRA strike, which could have an impact on when the new season arrives, possibly pushing it to later in the year. Paramount has not confirmed any release timing, but at NYCC last October, showrunner Mike McMahan spoke about season 5 coming this year. The executive producer has also revealed season 5 will feature more of T’Lyn, more homeworld visits, and possibly a connection to Star Trek: Enterprise .

Strange New Worlds season 3?

Beyond those 3 shows, things start getting a bit less certain when it comes to Trek on TV in 2024. The third season of  Strange New Worlds  began production in early December, delayed by seven months due to WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Production is set to wrap up in May. The show has been a hit with fans and critics so Paramount could be motivated to get at least part of the season onto the platform this year, but that would require spending less time on post-production than in previous seasons. Splitting the season into two parts could make that more doable, but for now, there are no indications on release timing. Season 3 promises to continue the trend of experimenting with different genres on the episodic series, along with the return of the Gorn as a series villain and Martin Quinn as Scotty.

Section 31 TV movie?

Another project that got delayed by the strikes was the  Star Trek: Section 31  streaming movie event starring Michelle Yeoh, reprising her role as Emperor (and Section 31 operative) Georgiou from Star Trek: Discovery . Originally set to start filming in the fall, that project begins production at the end of this month and wraps up in March. Even before the strikes, Paramount had not set a release date for this project. Like Strange New Worlds, post-production could possibly be fast-tracked for this project to debut by the end of the year. Beyond the involvement of Yeoh, there have been no casting announcements, and not much is known beyond the official synopsis: “Emperor Philippa Georgiou, joins a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets and faces the sins of her past.”

Khan podcast?

On Star Trek Day 2022, Paramount announced Star Trek: Ceti Alpha V , a scripted podcast from Star Trek II director Nicholas Meyer telling the story of Khan Noonien Singh’s exile on the titular planet. No release date was set and not much has been heard about the project, which began as a 3-part TV mini-series before being re envisioned as an audio drama. Late last year, Meyer said work on the project was still ongoing but had been delayed due to the strikes. Assuming Paramount is still interested (which could be a big assumption) and it went into production in early 2024, it’s possible fans could be listening before the end of the year.

More from expanded universe

While much of the activity around Star Trek these days is on TV, there is more in the expanded universe of the show. Unfortunately, unlike 2023, there is no indication yet of any new gaming releases. We are expecting an uptick in official Star Trek fiction: Next month will see The Mission and Other Stories short story collection from the Explorer magazine, and three novels are coming by the summer—David Mack’s Seven-focused Star Trek: Picard: Firewall in February, Dayton Ward’s Ds9/TNG tie-in Pliable Truths in May, and Greg Cox’s TOS movie era Lost to Eternity in July. We should expect more Trek fiction later in 2024, but no new titles have yet been announced. IDW’s prolific release of Star Trek comics continues into 2024 with the Picard’s Academy series, the ongoing Star Trek and Defiant series, and more. They are also launching a new Sons of Star Trek miniseries in February and have a fun Lower Decks: Warp Your Own Way interactive graphic novel set for the fall.

Mixed bag of merch

When it comes to Star Trek merchandise, there are a few highlights to look forward to. One of the big ones is the return of die-cast starship models now that Fanhome has picked up the former Eaglemoss license and plans to begin the release of a new collection later in the year. Master Replicas has teased the release of a plush for one of the breakout stars of 2023: Moopsy, the adorable bone-drinking monster from Lower Decks .  EXO-6 keeps on releasing new high-end 1:6 figures, including an upcoming line for Strange New Worlds starting with Pike and Spock . They have also teamed with Mondo for Lower Decks statues coming in April.

Voyager documentary

It looks like 2024 will finally see the release of  To The Journey – Looking back at Star Trek: Voyager , the documentary from the same team behind the DS9 doc What We Left Behind . After a record-breaking crowdfunding campaign, the doc team was able to record dozens of new interviews. 455 Films is planning on holding backer screenings in late summer with the general release of the doc in the late summer or early fall.

A convention in San Francisco

Creation Entertainment has announced their first “Trek Tour” convention (titled ST-SF) will take place on March 8-10 in Burlingame, CA (outside of San Francisco). They have already lined up a number of big Star Trek celebs including Brent Spiner, Jeri Ryan, and Tawny Newsome, along with behind-the-scenes luminaries like Picard showrunner Terry Matalas. Creation, who runs the big annual summer convention “STLV” convention in Las Vegas, used to hold several regional Trek cons around the USA ; if things go well in San Francisco, we could see more cities added to their schedule for later 2024 and into 2025.

Star Trek movie news

Since the release of Star Trek Beyond in 2016, there has been a steady stream of attempts to put together a new Trek feature film at Paramount Pictures. After the strikes wrapped up, Paramount was reportedly set to get the latest attempt at another Kelvin movie back into pre-production. That project has been delayed multiple times due to scheduling and conflicts over a script, and director Matt Shakman exited the project in 2022. With the 60th anniversary of the franchise coming in just two years, the studio could be expected to finally make a decision about how it wants to move forward. It’s possible another Kelvin movie moves forward, or perhaps the studio will decide it’s time for something new. Either way, don’t expect anything in theaters before 2025 at the earliest (and probably not even then).

Academy show going into production

Last year, Paramount+ announced plans for a YA-focused live-action series called Star Trek: Starfleet Academy . A writers room had been assembled (which includes Lower Decks star Tawny Newsome) before the WGA strike began in May, and they restarted work in October. Originally the show was going to start production early in 2024, but that has likely moved to later in the year. Fans shouldn’t expect to see the show on Paramount+ until 2025, or possibly even later.

New TV project announcement?

Since the launch of Star Trek: Discovery in 2017, most years have seen the announcement of some new Star Trek TV project. Paramount may be cutting back on spending but Star Trek shows have been some of the few successes for their streaming service. At New York Comic Con last October, executive producer Alex Kurtzman said “There’s no shortage of support from Paramount Plus for the Star Trek Universe.” He also teased that there “a bunch of new things now in the works” in addition to what has already been mentioned above. Many fans are hoping to see a spinoff from Star Trek: Picard which would star Jeri Ryan and more from the season 3 cast along with other legacy Trek stars in what showrunner Terry Matalas has described as “Star Trek: Legacy.” And Section 31 is reportedly just the first of a planned series of Star Trek TV movies. Don’t be surprised if something new gets announced this year, possibly at Comic-Con or Star Trek Day 2024.

Paramount Global merger/takeover/corporate changes

Hanging over everything to do with Star Trek is the current state of Paramount Global, owner of the franchise and producer and licensor of everything Star Trek. While the company remains profitable, it picked up a lot of debt in recent years as it spent money trying to compete with its bigger rivals in streaming, which includes spending on several Star Trek original series. With Wall Street now focusing on profits, the company has been cutting costs.  This has already impacted Star Trek with Discovery wrapping up and Prodigy being licensed to Netflix. The company is expected to cut even more costs in 2024, which could impact the future of the franchise as well. This year could also see bigger changes for the company, including a potential merger with another media company like Comcast or Warner Bros. Discovery (and early talks are already underway). There have also been talks about control being sold ahead of a split-up of corporate assets and a potential shutdown of Paramount+. While any big corporate moves could have a huge impact on the franchise, it likely won’t affect what gets released in 2024. However, we should expect news on corporate plans this year, which could result in big changes for the company (and Star Trek) in 2025.

Sanctuary districts.

The unification of Ireland.

Good luck getting the Federal Employment Act reinstated!

The unification if Ireland isn’t happening for a long time, I think Ireland has many more issues to be concerned about at the moment, like stabbing of your citizens and the built up resentment that exists in a very sizable percentage of the population.

But this isn’t really the place to put out political wants.

But it is the place to put callbacks to references made in Star Trek series about events taking place in 2024.

There was a TNG episode, “The High Ground,” that referenced the unification of Ireland in 2024. Like PATRIOT GAMES, it aired well before the Good Friday Accords. Had it aired even two years later, I imagine they would have referenced the ANC instead.

If only America was so lucky to have stabbings as the primary public violent act to worry about.

With you there.

??? With me getting stabbed?

You know damned well that’s not what he said.

Dude I’m not honestly understanding what he meant? Can you please explain? Thank you

He agrees that it would be nice if public stabbings were the worst form of violence that Americans had to worry about.

Ah, thanks. I plead being dense — it seems so obvious now, but in the context of some exchanges he and I have had recently I did not note the obvious. My apologies!

I think it is exactly the place to put out ‘political wants’, especially if it is referenced in any trek. Ireland should never have been partitioned in the first place, and the occupation of Ireland is very akin to Cardassia’s occupation of Bajor. Also when Spock made efforts for Vulcan/Romulan peace, as an Irishman growing up during the ‘troubles’, it always gave me hope that my homeland would be reunited. That’s why we love trek, we all see ourselves represented in some way shape or form, across many issues and causes

But in poll after poll only about 30% of the citizens of Northern Island want to unite.

People should have the right to democratically determine the make-up of their own countries without well-meaning, but historically arbitrary ideas being forced on them.

Recent polls have it more 46% for both sides with an ever increasing third way gaining momentum esp in unionist areas. Also brexit has had a massive impact accelerating reunification dramatically. Once a border poll is called, if it fails, it must be called every 7 years according to the Good Friday agreement, so id say that, with the demographics, give reunification a massive chance,

November 2023, ARINS/The Irish Times, 30% for, 51% against

And if we go with that poll, unionists dropped 6% whilst nationalists increased 3% in a year. That’s a 9% turnaround (using your quoted poll). With demographics, that will only accelerate a reduction in unionist and increase pro unification. So I’ll be generous and say that in 4 years from now the majority will be in favour of unification. So Data might only be only 4-10 years out in our timeline

But it won’t be four years, there is little chance of a border referendum in the next ten years being successful, even twenty. The Taoiseach has said as much. And any reunification needs to be done on both sides of the border as you know. And with the huge influxes of immigration changing the ethnic makeup of the republic I wouldn’t be sure if that “don’t know/not sure” won’t get a whole lot larger.

I was taken aback the last time I visited Dublin and Galway how quickly the country is changing.

I agree Jimmy chou, having the numbers and getting a border poll are two different things. The island as a whole needs immigration, as there will be a population deficit of 1.8m in next 10 years which will hit pensions on both sides of the border. Whatever the outcomes the next ten to fifteen years will be fascinating. Was in both Galway, Belfast and Dublin last year, and all three have chanced in different ways

Dude, I don’t really have a dog in the hunt here, so I hope it goes your way at some point given you are so enthusiastic about it.

i think WBD only wants to buy CBS. so maybe Paramount sells off CBS only and adds shareholders from Skydance then stops Paramount Plus and allows MAX, Netflix or Prime to be the distributors of all their original content, ie ST shows.

not thrilled about ST Academy mostly cause its in the DSC era. still holding out hope that once DSC is done we get an announcement ST Legacy is greenlit or after Section 31 airs we get the announcement of a ST TNG / ST Legacy tv movie is coming. they could bring in the Kelvin verse crew and reboot TNG in the kelvin verse with a new series of movies or tv show.

i think WBD only wants to buy CBS

Where did you hear this?

I like Prodigy and the animation is generally great, except when it comes to human characters. The uncanny valley is too much. Case in point, the picture of Robert Picardo’s character above. It’s kinda creepy.

I kind of feel the opposite way. What I really don’t like are cartoons where the proportions of the bodies are all out of wack. For example, in LDS, which is labeled as canon, we are forced to accept that these characters in Star Trek have much thinner necks than similar characters on other Star Trek series. And then when we see Shax, we have to accept that he’s about six times as massive as the other characters — so that character weighs about a 1000 pounds. All this takes me out of the show to some extent by ‘screaming’: ” this is just a cartoon!”

I read some time ago that Pixar admitted they had the ability to make extremely realistic human characters with their CG. But in all their tests with it they found it was so good it ended up being creepy. Which is why they stick to some slightly exaggerated elements when it comes to human characters.

I’m most excited for the return of Prodigy. It’s my favorite of the show shows, with how it manages to feel so fresh, while feeling very true to what I love about Star Trek. I was devastated when it was initially cancelled on Paramount+, so it will be that much sweeter when I get to watch it on Netflix. And everything we’ve heard in interviews and Tweets by the writers has me even more hyped.

But I honestly enjoy all the shows in their own way (yes, including Discovery), so I’m glad we’ll be back in full swing this year after the strikes, even if SNW doesn’t make it out this year. And hopefully we’ll start to get more updates on future project, like previews for Starfleet Academy or Section 31, or whole new announcements.

I hope to see The Original Series return. If not weekly, then five or more movie streaming events per year. The Human Adventure is Just Beginning…

I trust you mean a recast TOS…..

Yes. Hope it happens somehow.

Well it kinda already is, right? We have Spock, Uhura, Chapel, Kirk, and now Scotty on SNW. I can only imagine if this show continues to grow we will see more of a recasted TOS crew under Pike till the series finale (?I assume) when Kirk takes command.

It feels like we’ll get there eventually. Strange New Worlds could basically “wrap around” TOS eventually.

Yes that’s what I was thinking too

Guys, agreed!

Actually, I predicted this two years ago here and nearly everyone thought I was nuts.

Wasn’t that the point of the Kelvin movies? Maybe it will happen but I have zero interest in yet another reboot personally but that’s just me. But sure I think everything is on the table at this point, at least for now.

I am hoping for upcoming seasons of the existing Star Trek shows and the following new Star Trek shows. First the talked about Star Trek Legacy in addition to what Paramount has already planned and I have a few of my own ideas. Starting with Star Trek Titan, Star Trek SCE, Star Trek DTI, Star Trek new frontier, Star Trek Prometheus, Star Trek IK scorch kid, click on defense force had the following Star Trek movies,; Star Trek resistance, Star Trek before dishonor, Star Trek destiny gods of night, mirror mortals and lost souls. In addition I’d like to see some Star Trek deep space nine and voyager movies either in theaters or as TV movies. Another Star Trek series I’d like to see that has not been in book form or movie or television show is lissette like three massacre which would be good as a TV movie or Full length TV show entitled Star Trek border wars.

If you’re not sure what some of these acronyms are SCE is short for corpse of engineers and DTI is short for department of temporal investigations.

RE: Trek theatrical feature. Expecting something before 2025 would mean 2024. If something were greenlit today , we’re looking at 2027. Maybe fall 2026. Of course, if Section 31 gets a limited theatrical release, I suppose that could count early next year…..at this rate I’ll be happy to see one more outing on the big screen before I die.

So happy for you, man! :-)

A reasonable guess is Paramount will be aiming for summer or winter 2026 – the 60th anniversary.

Even if they are against another 150m theatrical I think they’ll risk it for the anniversary

And the only possible crew they’d go for is the kelvin cast (now the correct age for a TMP/WOK ‘legacy sequel’). otherwise its risk a new cast? (doubtful), TNG (nope), SNW/Disco (nope and nope)

To be honest, I really don’t think Paramount is all that concerned about the 60th anniversary. It’s not really a celebratory anniversary like something like the 50th of something is. Now that was a very special anniversary and we saw how well they treated that and what ultimately happened with Beyond.

And the truth is, outside of that one, the last time they really pushed to get a movie in theaters for a special birthday was the 30th anniversary and First Contact. Nemesis came out a year after the 35th anniversary and after that did so poorly no one even tried to put out for its 40th. A lot of fans thought Paramount would push to get the second Kelvin movie out in 2011 in time for the 45th anniversary to market the movie and anniversary more but no such luck. STID didn’t happen for another two years after that.

Don’t get me wrong, they may try to get a movie out by then, but I’m guessing it’s not going to be in any high demand if they still don’t have enough resources or backing to make it happen. I mean the 55th anniversary passed without anything as well so there is no guarantee this will be any different and how many movies were already announced by then?

And the clock is, once again, ticking.

None of the minor anniversaries 45,55 warrant much thought from even most die hard trekkies. But 60 is kind of a big deal (as seen with recent Dr Who)

As you say there wasn’t too much effort put into the biggie 50 (not as much as the other big ones 25/30). but obviously all that was around then was the Kelvin movie franchise (plus there was the celebration event, magazines etc) it could’ve been a bigger deal (for fans and probably general audiences) had it been the Orci/Shatner movie instead of Guardians of the Gold Key .. In comparison Dr Who had an incredible 50th episode (and more) and Bond had the iconic Skyfall

But now there’s multiple shows like the 90s so it should be more like the 25/30 with celebratory episodes and hopefully a movie (unless they planning to do the s31 movie for then and make it abit of a celebratory thing with Michelle Yeoh encountering events from Trek history Trials&Tribulations style and abit EEAAO)

“ But now there’s multiple shows like the 90s so it should be more like the 25/30 with celebratory episodes and hopefully a movie. ”

I can see them doing something with some of the TV shows like with SNW or Lower Decks assuming those shows are still around for example. But I really have zero faith they are that motivated to invest in a movie, especially considering how much of a bust the 50th anniversary ended up being. That’s the weird irony why we haven’t had a movie since because clearly Paramount doesn’t have any real faith in another movie.

Yeah Bond also had a movie out for the 50th, there was no real effort to get another out for the 60th either. They could’ve held the last movie back another year to coincide with that anniversary date…they didn’t. Yeah Dr. Who had a big anniversary, once again, for it’s 50th. I had no idea they did something for it’s 60th anniversary (never seen the show), but it’s a TV production, so it’s different anyway.

As I said, they may try and yes it would just be good to make a movie since it will be a decade since Beyond opened. But considering it’s 2024 now and just a few months ago Pine has said he has heard nothing, again, and the last director bailed nearly a year and a half ago, they are not exactly jumping on the ball to get things moving.

But we’ll see.

For Dr Who 60th they brought back David Tennant for 3 full length specials.

With Bond they couldnt hold it back any longer as it was supposed to come out end of 2019, had it done and they’d been no pandemic then maybe Eon would’ve started work on Bond 26 and made sure to get it out for 2023

With Patrick Stewart saying he’s about to get a movie script maybe thats a hint what they planning for 2026? (stream movie? featuring him and whoever else? maybe he’s talking about s31? or something else like a anniversary movie ..)

Maybe that’s what they are trying to do and make a TNG streaming movie for the 60th anniversary. Totally down for that.

That would make more sense and a lot cheaper than more JJ verse stuff no one is going to care about but other Trekkies and would probably bomb again unless they make it super cheap.

I guess I should make it clear I’m not saying I don’t think they won’t celebrate the 60th at all, I just mean I don’t think they will do it by putting out a $100+ million movie, that’s all. I mean, maybe, but at the moment, there is just no movement for a movie that would need to open in the next 2 and a half years to meet the anniversary. I guess they can stretch it to December which ironically when the last movie was suppose to come out in 2023. But I don’t think it’s a priority at all, especially if it’s not going to drive real profits.

I just feel if they do anything for it, it will be TV based. I did mention they celebrated the 55th anniversary with the live event on Star Trek day so I can see them doing something like that again. But with the word about the possible TNG movie, yes maybe that is a possibility as well although I have my doubts on that too.

TBH I think they should be. All of the “0” anniversaries should be celebrated IMHO. ESP after they epically messed up the 50th.

I agree, but how ‘big’ that celebration is will probably depend on the year and obviously how healthy the franchise is in general. The 30th was really the last time they celebrated in a big way with First Contact, a TV special and several shows directly making special episodes for it.

Now I will say they did make the 55th anniversary feel pretty special with the Star Trek day event, but that was obviously just to promote all the old and new shows on P+. But it honestly felt like the most special since the 30th IMO.

Well with Yeoh’s recent success I could see them doing a limited theatrical run for sure.

The new Rey Star Wars movie is supposed to start shooting in April, in three months, and that’s still not coming out until 2026. The way things have been going at Paramount, I would be shocked if they even announce a movie this year at all. And we all know how much their announcements is worth.

I do suspect the Section 31 movie may get a small release of some kind, so yeah that would count I guess.

I would love to see a more political show about how humanity evolved after world war 3 and first contact. How it has transformed from a fragmented world into a more or less united world, how it has achieved great milestones such as overcoming hunger, currency and hatred. A show that gives our time what Star Trek is all about: hope. And Aaron Sorkin has to be the showrunner – because he’s the perfect match for it.

Reading the tea leaves here:

Don’t expect Starfleet Academy or any new series start to be announced until the merger thing either gets done or is killed.

I dunno. Those things can take years. Not specifically speaking of Trek here but Paramount can’t afford to put everything on hold til then.

Yeah, I’m sure we’ll play the “what’s on the chopping block” game if and when it happens, but in the meantime the show will go on.

Yeah unfortunately “what’s on the chopping block” seems to be a new trend in Hollywood started by Zaslav at WBD and it’s catching on faster than a virus and just as insidious. But it’s not going to stop them from making new stuff cause frankly they can’t.

IIRC Academy isn’t scheduled to even begin production until mid-2024, and there’s only a writers room at the moment. I think the issue that could potentially cause tax implications for the merger expires in April. If the WBD/P+ merger happens they may delay it until after that passes, but fingers crossed it doesn’t delay Academy . I do agree though any actual “new” Trek project announcement will not happen until merger is completed or killed.

And here something more ambitious: For the first time, Star Trek has the opportunity to have a global, simultaneous launch. That’s why it’s time for the first interactive, time-synchronous Star Trek show. You can see the bridge, “Which course Captain?”, and then the community has the opportunity via app to decide where to go. To Planet xy? Takes 10 days…And during these ten days we see individual short videos from the crew , maybe live streams, an evening chat in the bar. Fans can communicate via chat. Of course, the individual nodes have to be pre-produced and are only played in an indefinite order. But the connection between the nodes, these are interactive – that’s where the magic happens.

I think I would normally be tied for the excitement over Prodigy and SNW but with the near miss cancellation we got on PRO I am looking forward to that more. Bring them on!

No making-of books, no surprise there as it is going to take Ronan farrow to dig out the facts about dsc birth pangs.

I bet in the next 5 years we will get 1 or 2 behind-the-scenes books about Discovery’s production. Just seems like an unmissable opportunity for someone.

I think it is going to be a matter of access, and things are still screwed down pretty tightly there.

Looking forward to season five of Lower Decks.

Steward is talking about getting a Trek script this week. He might be the next movie following Section 31.

Denethor of Gondor?

yeah, typos are a thing that happen on the internet. It’s exciting stuff.

Anyhoo, Stewart was talking about Star Trek and talked about getting a new script this week. I imagine Trekmovie will have an article about it shortly.

Seriously, thanks for that info. I like to joke when a typo gives me a sf/fantasy reference to make, so it’s just all in good fun!

Ohh Thanks for the heads up. Do you know where he talked about it so I can go check it out?

Apparently on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast.

A few entertainment sites l’m apparently not supposed to name check here picked it up. Patrick’s a bit rambly but when he talks about getting a new script he does appear to be talking about Star Trek, near as I can tell.

Ahh ok cool thanks

Wow…interesting!

Maybe a Legacy/TNG movie is in the works? I would certainly be up for it if true.

My hope is a Captain Worf Movie and the classified last mission of the Enterprise-E.

Legacy characters.

Legacy characters gave us Strange New Worlds.

New characters gave us Discovery.

I think Emily has installed a special bot that automatically posts when ‘legacy’ and ‘characters’ are repeated in a message. That would save her a lot of time.

There is a difference with Legacy Characters if they are being recast/reimangined with actors in their prime versus bringing in 70’s/80’s actors to play the same role… there is much more of a “legacy thing” when you go the geriatric-sentimentality route.

Fully agreed! But to be fair it was Discovery that brought back Pike and Spock to make SNW.

And I don’t care how many legacy characters show up. As long as they fit the story bring back as many as they can. And I would have Pike and Picard 100 times over Cry Baby Burnham. 🙄

Bad writing, bad casting and bad show-running gave us Discovery. not ‘new characters’.

I’m honestly only interested in Prodigy and Lower Decks. Depending on the era, I might watch S31. Michelle Yeoh is one of my favorite actresses snd she’s amazing to watch. Pass on SNW S3. S2 killed any chance of me coming back to the show. And pass on SFA. Not interested. I’m out.

I would like to see DS9 Remastered for Bluray.

I’ve said for ages the instant DS9 is remastered in HD I’m buying the Bluray.

Unfortunately since there seems to be no effort to do that I’m forced to conclude I’m in an extreme minority.

ML31, if it was worth it for Babylon 5 then surely there’s a business case for Ds9 and voyager.

If SFA is in the 32nd century, which I suspect it will be, it will probably end up being a pass for me too. Unless somehow Discovery season 5 changes my mind somehow.

DS9 In HD! That’s all I want, that’s all I care about. Please. God. Make it so

Amen to that.

Release the best Voyager and DS9 two partners as Netflix or Paramount plus exclusive movies of the week.

I might be wildly off the mark, but years ago when TNG and later ENT were remastered to Blu-Ray it occurred to me that keeping those shows on Netflix for casual viewing would hurt Blu-Ray sales. I don’t know if that was entirely the cause; in 2012 Star Trek was still airing daily on various cable channels. Perhaps if CBS/Paramount were to license DS9 back to Netflix (or Hulu/Disney) they could ask for 1/2 the cost to remaster the remaining two legacy series.

Well sounds like we’ll have a busy year! Maybe the last busy year? Guess we’ll see.

But what I’m most excited for from my most to least anticipated:

A. Prodigy season 2. Without a doubt. I think whenever this starts it’s going to get HUGE fanfare now. :Can’t wait to see Voyager A in all her greatness.

B. Lower Decks season 5. Cerritos Strong!

C. Strange New Worlds season 3. Great cliffhanger and can’t wait to see how they resolve it.

D. To The Journey. I almost forgot this was coming out lol. It’s been getting WWLB type of delays. But as a huge Voyager fan, very, very excited!

E. Section 31. Actually looking forward to this now.

F. Discovery season 5. Maybe the next trailer will get me more pumped, but yeah.

G. Ceti Alpha V podcast. I keep forgetting this is a thing as well lol. Not exactly losing sleep over it, but very curious about it.

But wow, four shows, a streaming movie, documentary and a podcast. Sounds like fun!

In all honestly I completely forgot what the SNW cliffhanger was.

Even though I do find that show sub par at best and pretty forgettable it’s not necessarily a knock on the show. It’s more a knock on these short seasons that have such amazingly long turn around time between their seasons. Out of sight out of mind for most of them. There were shows I’ve like a lot that had breaks so very long I forgot where they left off. Hell on Wheels comes to mind.

Yeah it is crazy how long these turn around take. And of course everything has taken even longer the last few years thanks to the pandemic and now the strikes. I do miss the days when a season ended around May or June and the next season started in September. Man we were so spoiled lol. As someone once said, those were the days! ;)

Your list is mostly the same as mine except I would reverse F. And G.

Me too my friend…me too!

Is that Khan thing canon though? I wonder will incorporate the Khan changes from SNW? Don’t care either way just curious.

I’m most looking forward to Discovery S5, the S31 film and Prodigy. Discovery has been some of the best Trek since DS9 and i loved Michelle Yeoh in Discovery. Prodigy as been a really good show and i can’t wait to see Starfleet Academy too.

I also am looking forward to LDS S5 but i don’t enjoy the show as much as i did in S1-2 as i feel the humor has changed and not for the better.

Same with SNW i enjoy the show but for me the show isn’t as good as DS9/Discovery or the other shows old and new. It’s my least favorite Trek show but i do hope the show improves in S3.

I do appreciate that the writers ‘write’ SNW as a Hybrid show of TOS & Discovery but i feel they haven’t yet found the correct mix/style of writing that would make the show reach the high bar of quality writing that DS9/Discovery have set for Star Trek.

As for a Star Trek Legacy show I’m always interested in a new Trek show i just hope that if Matalas is the show runner for it that he doesn’t follow up on the writing style of Picard S3.

Don’t get me wrong i enjoyed Picard S3 especially with seeing the TNG crew together again and also seeing the Enterprise D again along with her getting a better ending than the one in Generations.

But i felt the writing in Picard S3 was weak and the amount of plot holes was staggering along side the huge amount of nostalgia that was used as a crouch (imo) to prop up the weak storytelling. So i hope Legacy doesn’t follow that and they decide to go boldly in a new direction.

They shouldn’t make any movie that isn’t based on this idea. https://fanon.fandom.com/wiki/Star_Trek:Monsters_Unleashed

Here’s an incomplete novelization: https://docs.google.com/document/d/16krcg5OldSjp83aW5fktq-91sbkTOhVoYErHEbiojrw/edit

I need to know if Data still got physical super strength as he use to have or if he only got human physical strength now.. So I would look forward to get that question answered in what form ever (tv episode, movie, …)

Title: “What To Look Forward To From Star Trek In 2024” Subtitle: “Star Trek movie news” Contents: lol no

What to look forward to this year? It’s which company will merge with Paramount due to their financial woes.

I’ve been watching the Picard Season 3 Blu Ray with commentary. Terry Matalas states over and over again in those commentaries how he is still hoping for Star Trek Legacy to be green-lit. I think it is very possible and should be announced this year.

That is my number one wish for Star Trek by far. Other than Legacy, I am looking forward to the new seasons of Lower Decks and Prodigy. SNW probably will not come out until 2025 since Paramount does not have anything else ready to go yet.

The good news is that I can save money and cancel my P+ subscription for most of the year.

Why so desperate for Legacy? Is it the promise of Legacy characters in a show called Legacy? No one does legacy characters (and nothing else) like Terry Matalas that’s for sure.

Or are you that desperate to see more of Sidney LaForge and Raffi.

I want a series called “Star Trek: Legacy” on that Enterprise-G with Captain 7 of 9, “Crash” La Forge at the helm, Jack Crusher doing…something, and maybe an Admiral Riker giving missions. We would see the other TNG characters from time-to-time, but it would basically be a continuation of the TNG universe.

So you want the safety of nostalgia, fan service, and legacy characters so you can subconsciously remember a time when Star Trek was better. Got it.

I mean, I also like Matalas’ writing. If he is in charge and I have faith it will be good. Do stories similar to TNG, like how SNW is doing stories similar to TOS. I hope we can get a space station show again someday like DS9.

I am all for different, but so far no good. Disco ain’t it.

I still have faith (of the heart) we will get a Legacy show, but it’s probably years away at this point and how things work out with Paramount in the next few years. They obviously don’t have the capital to make that show right now and exactly why I’m not holding my breath on a theatrical movie anytime soon either.

Really excited for LDS and PRO as well! :)

Only two things pique my interest.

The con in Burlingame. It’s been quite some time since I’ve been to one and I think I might want to check it out since it is so local for me.

The 2nd season of Prodigy. I liked the first half of the first season but the quality of the 2nd half dropped some. So I’m hoping it can recapture the elements that made the first season decent.

But if news comes at some point in 2024 that Paramount has cut all ties with Secret Hideout that would be the best news ever.

So, speaking of a possible merger of Paramount with WBD…

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest’s Anniversary edition issue has a special cover this year featuring William Shatner (NOT James T Kirk) along side Superman and Batman!

Bring on Prodigy, Lower Decks, To the Journey and Strange New Worlds!

The rest, yeah OK, but those are what I’m most excited for!

To be honest, my #1 thing I’m looking forward to expect from the Star Trek multiverse is season two of Prodigy on Netflix.

There have been so many delays with To The Journey , I forgot about it. What We Left Behind was a magical experience in the theater, and again on Blu-Ray, so I can’t wait to see how TTJ plays out.

In the immediate future I am most excited about the final season of Discovery. This season sounds exciting, and I do hope the finale was reworked in a satisfying way to conclude the series.

Prodigy S2 I am very excited about. Just like Lower Decks , I was not expecting to like this series. The animation is top-notch, the writing/storytelling compelling, and the characters likeable. My guess is that Netflix will separate the remaining twenty episodes into two parts: Season 2, Part 1 and Season 2, Part 2, just like P+ did.

The third season of Lower Decks is the season that clinched my love for the show, and the fourth season put that love over the top. Everything I’ve heard about the upcoming fifth season excites me. I don’t think we’ll get a summer release, most likely late September/early October.

Strange New Worlds is now going to be the live-action flagship series once Discovery concludes. Realistically, they COULD finish post production on the first half of Season 3, and stream those five episodes in November/December. This has been done more than once with DSC, but that was when DSC had at least 13 episodes per season to play with. Personally, I would love that but I don’t see it happening. Most likely they will wait until all ten episodes are completely finished with post, and begin streaming in February 2025 (just so there is at least one full season live-action Trek to stream that year).

To me, it seems more realistic P+ will expedite post-production of the Section 31 film so that it’s ready for the 2024 holiday season. Even if they give a two/three week limited-theatrical run in November, it should be ready to stream in December.

As time goes by I find myself more excited about Academy . I know it’s being billed as a YA series, and that has turned a lot of folks off, but I really don’t think we’re going to get some CW-esque drama. IIRC the only thing set up right now is the writer’s room; actual production wasn’t scheduled to begin until mid-2024. So fingers crossed we see the first season in late 2025.

As for Legacy , like many fans it’s something I want, but I do think any announcement of any non-confirmed series or films will not come until we know the outcome of the merger.

That description of Disco as a having a more “fun” tone as they “uncover a mystery” makes me want to throw up. It sounds like corporate committee “peak TV” mystery box season-long snooze fests of terrible television. In some ways that’s exactly what Disco is – it’s all the worst tropes of streaming media, dialed up to 11. Oversized stakes, oversized emotions, oversized speeches. It whiplashes from one tone to the next, it’s so wildly inconsistent in its writing and style, it’s really a hot mess. This final attempt at mass appeal by making it “more fun” and “episodic” like SNW, with the obligatory season-long mystery arc about the fate of the multiverse, is so tired, so uninspired. I hope 2024, is the end of this really mixed bag era of Trek, and the creatives in charge regroup for the back half of the 20s with better stories. I want to enjoy Star Trek again, which, barring Picard S3, I really haven’t.

Also releasing this Khan project as an audio drama makes me wonder – is this going to be canon? It almost sounds like they’re releasing a podcast, which sounds like it could exist in the same class of canon as the novels. I think that’s one of the most interesting things in the works, but I’m interested to see what the fans have to say about all of it.

As an ex-employee of Quark’s Bar I certainly would like to see more ST projects especially when they are related to DS9.

Why has “To the journey” been delayed so many times, does anyone know? They stopped updating the campaign page ages ago, and their own website never got any updates to begin with! They also have/had a Facebook group I believe, but I’ve never seen it, so I have no idea if they used even that to tell people about the project’s status?

Anyhoo. I’d also like to hear news about any upcoming games. Resurgence was fun, and I think there’s a boardgame or something coming out, but there’s still so much potential left untapped…

I am so disappointed we didn’t get to see Seven actually on the Bridge of the Enterprise D… I get why they wanted it to just be the original cast, but she could have joined them halfway through the finale.

The idea of seeing her at a science station or even helming the ship would have been amazing.

Star Trek: The Next Generation - All Good Things

Arguably, the most faithful way of watching Star Trek is in the order each series was made, allowing you to follow the franchise from its inception and explore its universe as the original fans did decades ago.

It makes sense to do it this way as while the shows do jump around in terms of time period, they still find ways to build on what came before in order of release.

In that sense, you're likely to get a slightly more complete picture of Star Trek by watching in this order, instead of piecing the shows together in a chronological timeline.

Star Trek release order (films listed in italics )

  • Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS)
  • Star Trek: The Animated Series (TAS)
  • The first six Star Trek films (The Motion Picture up to Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)
  • Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG)
  • Star Trek: Generations
  • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (DS9)
  • Star Trek: Voyager (VOY)
  • Star Trek films 8-10 (First Contact, Insurrection, Nemesis)
  • Star Trek: Enterprise (ENT)
  • Star Trek (2009), Star Trek Into Darkness, Star Trek Beyond
  • Star Trek: Discovery (DSC)
  • Star Trek: Short Treks*
  • Star Trek: Picard (PIC)
  • Star Trek: Lower Decks (LOW)
  • Star Trek: Prodigy (PRO)
  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (SNW)
  • Untitled Toby Haynes Star Trek prequel film

* Star Trek: Short Treks premiered after Discovery, hence the listing here. However, Short Treks season 2 sets up some plot threads picked up in Discovery season 2 and beyond, so it's best to alternate between them if you can.

Some people who watch in this order choose to skip over the first three steps and begin with Star Trek: The Next Generation. There is a belief among certain Trekkies that TNG has aged better than The Original Series, making it an easier entry point for newcomers to the franchise.

It would be worth watching the first few episodes of TOS to see what you think of it, but if William Shatner's Captain Kirk doesn't quite cut it for you, feel free to move on to the dulcet tones of Patrick Stewart's Jean-Luc Picard. The two shows have relatively few connections, so you don't need to worry about feeling lost (although they do eventually cross over in a major way in the Star Trek: Generations movie).

How to watch Star Trek in chronological order

Star Trek: Discovery

As previously stated, the various shows in the Star Trek universe take place at different points in a sprawling timeline, so an alternative method is to watch in chronological order.

This comes with pros and cons: on the one hand, it allows you to begin with a modern show, which may be preferable to some people. But on the other hand, some of the references contained in more recent episodes may not land with you in the way they were intended.

Star Trek chronological order (films listed in italics )

  • Star Trek: Enterprise (Year: 2151-2161)
  • Short Trek: The Girl Who Made the Stars (Year: 2230s)
  • Short Trek: The Brightest Star (Year: 2239)
  • Star Trek: The Cage – The Original Series one-off pilot episode (Year: 2254)
  • Short Trek: The Escape Artist (Year: 2250s)
  • Short Trek: Q&A (Year: 2253)
  • Star Trek: Discovery season 1 (Year: 2256)
  • Short Trek: Runaway (Year: 2257)
  • Star Trek: Discovery season 2 (Year: 2258)
  • Short Trek: The Trouble with Edward (Year: 2250s)
  • Short Trek: Ask Not (Year: 2250s)
  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (Year: 2259)
  • Star Trek: The Original Series (Year: 2265-2269)
  • Short Trek: Ephraim and Dot (Year: 2267-2285)
  • Star Trek: The Animated Series (Year: 2269-2270)
  • The first six Star Trek films (Year: 2273-2293)
  • Star Trek: The Next Generation (Year: 2364-2370)
  • Star Trek films 7-10: Generations up to Nemesis (Year: 2293-2379)
  • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (Year: 2369-2375)
  • Star Trek: Voyager (Year: 2371-2378)
  • Star Trek: Lower Decks (2380)
  • Star Trek: Prodigy (Year: 2383)
  • Short Trek: Children of Mars (Year: 2385)
  • Star Trek: Picard seasons 1-3 (Year: 2399-2402)
  • Star Trek: Discovery seasons 3-4 (32nd Century)
  • Short Trek: Calypso (far future, year unknown)

Note – Star Trek: Short Treks was a two-season anthology series, which visits various periods on the franchise timeline. Anything listed as a Short Trek is a single episode of this show (with a runtime between 8 and 18 minutes).

It's not currently confirmed where precisely Toby Haynes' film will sit in the chronology but we do know it'll be a prequel film, taking place "decades" before Star Trek (2009).

For those wondering, the recent trilogy of Star Trek movies directed by JJ Abrams and Justin Lin – Star Trek, Into Darkness and Beyond – are set in an alternate universe, meaning they do not connect to a chronological order of the series.

They do, however, contain references to The Original Series – most notably the return of Leonard Nimoy as Spock – but can be watched at any point as standalone stories.

What are all the new Star Trek shows and films coming in 2024?

S tar Trek has had an up-and-down 2023, with a lot of new content coming out over the last 12 months and a lot of it getting canceled due to mismanagement by Paramount+ and lower than hoped for viewing figures. Star Trek's Prodigy, Discovery, and Picard were all canceled this season, with Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks the only remaining shows on Paramount+ that have a shelf life ahead of them.

Prodigy got picked up on Netflix, thankfully, and will at least get to see its second season debut before it gets canceled again, should it get canceled again that is. It may get renewed for all we know. Yet, despite the whiplash that was 2023, time keeps marching and we are now once again looking to the future of what fans can expect in 2024. While the writer's and actor's strikes did slow things down, and the lack of shows will limit things, we do have some new content coming our way.

April 2024 - Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

An exact date isn't known just yet, but we do know that the final season of Star Trek: Discovery will take place sometime in April, which is about four months away as of press-time. The show will bring to an end arguably the most controversial and least embraced Star Trek series of all time.

Sometime in 2024 - Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2

The debut of season two was supposed to be in October of 2023, but the cancelation of the show on Paramount+ hindered those plans. That said, the season was likely to be split up into two parts, and if Netflix intends on doing the same thing, splitting it up over two parts, then the first part of Prodigy could debut any time over the next few months, as the first part of the season was nearly finished upon cancelation.

Maybe late 2024 - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3

This one isn't expected, but it's possible. The show is currently under production and will be filming the next season through June. Assuming they're editing and such while they're filming, it's possible the show is ready to go by the final quarter of 2024, sometime around October or November if we're optimistic about the turnaround.

What's not coming yet or hasn't been announced

While it's possible that Star Trek: Lower Decks will debut its next season later in 2024, it's not as likely as the strikes really cut into the production schedule for a lot of shows. Not to mention it's not even clear if the fifth season of Lower Decks will happen with all the turmoil going on at Paramount at the moment. They could meet a similar fate that befell Prodigy.

Section 31 is set to start filming at the end of January 2024, and it's likely it'll be a year before we see the film (if ever with how Paramount is). So the first quarter of 2025 seems most likely. The Starfleet show isn't likely at all, as we have nothing for the show yet, and it'll take likely a year to get casting, writing, filming, editing and the like done.

What are all the new Star Trek shows and films coming in 2024?

Netflix Saves Beloved 'Star Trek' Show From Cancellation

New episodes of 'Star Trek: Prodigy' are in the works for Netflix after the show's heartbreaking cancellation at Paramount+.

By Michael Hein - March 4, 2024 05:38 pm EST

Netflix rescued Star Trek: Prodigy from obscurity when it was removed from Paramount +, and now it is even producing new episodes. Sci-fi fans were devastated when Paramount+ not only canceled the series, but removed it from the catalog last summer. The series is now streaming on Netflix and according to a report by The Wrap , 20 new episodes are in production and will premiere later this year.

Star Trek: Prodigy premiered in October of 2021, targeting a younger audience for the first time in the franchise's history. There were 20 episodes in the first season, and reports that a second season was already in the works when Paramount+ announced the cancellation in the summer of 2023. Thankfully, Netflix licensed the show meaning fans could continue to stream it, but the fate of that second season was uncertain until showrunners Alex Kurtzman, Dan Hageman and Kevin Hageman announced the plans to release it on Netflix.

"Thank you to our incredible Star Trek: Prodigy fans, who championed not just a show, but a community that's always been connected by the belief that we build a better future together," they said. "We set out to inspire you, but you inspired us. The team is still hard at work on the second season, and we can't wait to share it with the amazing fans around the world."

"I've always held that the Star Trek fan base is among the strongest and most intelligent in the world. They have shown their collective passion, and we're happy to be able to celebrate Prodigy once again," added actress Kate Mulgrew, the voice of Admiral Janeway. Prodigy's removal was a part of Paramount+'s integration with Showtime, giving the company the option to shop some shows around to other distributors. Other shows in that package such as Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies have not resurfaced yet.

Prodigy begins in the year 2383 – five years after the conclusion of Star Trek: Voyager. It is about a motley crew of young aliens who discover an abandoned Starfleet ship called the USS Protostar on an alien world. They take control of the ship and learn to fly it as a crew, and eventually find themselves entrusted with responsibility by Starfleet. The show has many references to the other series in the Star Trek franchise, giving young fans an easy entry point into this vast fictional world.

Right now, the first 20 episodes of  Star Trek: Prodigy are available to stream on Netflix. The show is also available to rent or purchase on digital stores like Amazon's Prime Video. There are another 20 episodes expected later this year.
