Dog-Friendly Travel Guide for New Hampshire | Raymond Area and Manchester New Hampshire Things to Do with a Dog
Pet-friendly cabins in new hampshire and dog-friendly travel guide.
Disclaimer: This is a sponsored post . However, I will always offer my readers an unbiased and honest account of my experiences. Your trust is very appreciated, and never taken for granted. ~Tonya, Dexter and Angel Nutter
Dexter the Dog and I have been working on visiting all the New England states in 2019. Next up on our dog-friendly road trip was New Hampshire! Visiting New Hampshire with Dexter has been on my dog bucket list for a few years. I’m happy to say that our trip to Raymond, New Hampshire did not disappoint.
I love traveling with Dexter’s BFF, Levi, but this trip we invited my parents. I thought it would be a great way to spend some quality time with the family.
This road trip from Ohio to New Hampshire would be about thirteen hours, plus all of our pit stops. We decided to break up the drive into two days, allowing us to take a more leisurely drive to our New Hampshire destination.

New Hampshire Dog-Friendly Cottages and Cabins
We arrived at Pine Acres Campground in Raymond, New Hampshire. Pine Acres is a summer-focused campground, but we arrived to enjoy the last weekend they were open in the fall. Dexter loves the autumn weather, and visiting New Hampshire during peak fall colors was a must-do.
Our dog-friendly rustic cabin can be booked through RvontheGo.com . We checked in at the main office and store. The staff was very welcoming and extremely helpful explaining where our dog-friendly cabin was located within the large campground.
Our pet-friendly rustic cabin was the perfect size and situated just across the campground road from a lovely lake. The bedroom has a double bed, closet, and a large dresser with mirror. The living room contained a bunk bed and a sleeper sofa. There is a full kitchen, kitchen table, and a full bath. Our cabin has a large deck with a picnic table. Next to the cabin is also a fire pit. All this goodness was surrounded by large trees in peak colors of gold and crimson. Perfection.
The family was pretty tired from our road trip, so we headed to our sleeping quarters for the night. In the morning, I awoke to some stunning fall foliage along the Lamprey River, which was just across the campground road. It was going to be a great day for a dog-friendly day trip to Manchester, New Hampshire. But first, my stepdad cooked up a great breakfast.
Dog-Friendly Activities and Attractions in Manchester, New Hampshire
Manchester, New Hampshire was just about twenty minutes west of Pine Acres, so we headed out after breakfast. Our first stop was at the Weston Observatory . Weston Observatory was built in 1896 in honor of James Adams Weston, a former mayor of Manchester and governor of New Hampshire. This dog-friendly attraction allows you and your dog to climb eighty-five steps to the top of the Weston Observatory. When you and your dog reach the top, a member of the Manchester Historic Association will answer any questions regarding the tower and history of Manchester, NH. Included in the cost of admission is a walking tour of the surrounding area.
Given that Dexter has limited mobility , he stayed below with my mom, while my stepdad and I climbed the sixty-six foot tower. Once we reached the top, we were greeted not only by our tour guide, but with a stunning view of Manchester.
Manchester, New Hampshire Dog-Friendly Parks
After our fun tour of the Weston Observatory, we headed to Livingston Park . This park was hopping with activity. There were lots of families, dogs, and birds. We took the walking trail that circled Dorr’s Pond. People were even fishing in the pond and, in the winter months, it’s open for ice skating. For the human visitors, they offer a newly constructed swimming pool, baseball diamond, playground, soccer field, and a full athletic complex. It was pretty massive.
Dog-Friendly Restaurants in Manchester, New Hampshire
By this time, our tummies were yelling at us for a fill-up. We headed to downtown Manchester to The Gyro Spot . The Gyro Spot in Manchester has outside tables that are dog-friendly. This place was bustling with customers, and the restaurant smelled so good.
The Gyro Spot is a family restaurant that serves up traditional Greek street food with a modern twist. Don’t let the upbeat, casual atmosphere fool you. The food is out of this world. The kitchen staff was extremely kind in helping me choose my chicken gyro. They serve traditional pork gyros as well as beef/lamb, chicken, and veggie.
The three of us each ordered a different gyro: chicken, pork, and beef/lamb. The traditional pork gyro was filled with rotisserie pork, tzatziki sauce, onions, tomatoes, parsley, and hand-cut fries, wrapped in a grilled pita. The beef/lamb gyro had rotisserie lamb and beef, tzatziki sauce, onions, tomatoes, parsley, and hand-cut fries, wrapped in a grilled pita. My chicken gyro had rotisserie chicken, with their signature “G-Sauce,” onions, tomatoes, parsley, and hand-cut fries, wrapped in a grilled pita. For dessert, a fresh order of loukoumades topped it off. These warm fried dough balls were sprinkled with honey and powdered cinnamon. Yes, it was as good as it sounds.
After lunch, we headed back to our rustic cabin at Pine Acres campground . It was time to just chill and relax at the campground. One of the nice things about renting a cabin is that the family can unwind in our own space. After dinner, it didn’t take long before all of us went to bed.
Raymond, New Hampshire Pet-Friendly Cabins and Cottages
For our last day in New Hampshire, we decided to enjoy all that Pine Acres campground had to offer. Pine Acres is considered one of the premier wilderness playgrounds in all of New England. This pet-friendly New Hampshire campground features a wide variety of amenities all situated among beautiful trees and along the Lamprey River. Pine Acres even won Woodall’s highest rated 5E for recreation!
This summer-focused campground’s amenities include: A pet-friendly campground, lake swimming with 600 ft. sandy beach, lake and river fishing, daily and weekly organized recreational activities, fully stocked general store, teen recreation hall, adult recreation hall, sand volleyball, two playgrounds, full basketball court, softball field, snack shack, cabin rentals, 24-hour laundromat, horseshoe pits, wooded or waterfront sites, full hookup sites, water and electric-only sites, tent sites, seasonal sites, propane, and three dumping stations.
It’s no wonder Pine Acres is a happening dog-friendly campground in New Hampshire. And it was a very active area. Families were buzzing around having a good time. I definitely would consider this campground active vs. being a quiet retreat, ideal for families of all ages.
We enjoyed a day of walking around the campground and talking to our neighbors. Ed even tossed a line in the Lamprey River. I’m sad to say, nothing was biting, but he still had fun fly fishing in New Hampshire.
My mom and Ed stoked up a good campfire, while I headed to the general store to pick up some marshmallow sticks. Ed cooked up a mouthwatering beef roast on the campfire. I must say, he is quite the grillmaster.
After dinner, we toasted marshmallows and made some delicious campfire treats. It was the ideal way to end our stay in New Hampshire.
If you are looking for a fun, dog-friendly New Hampshire trip, I highly recommend staying at Pine Acres Campground . You can book on RvontheGo.com . With more than forty summer-focused campgrounds across the country, your family is bound to find the perfect getaway.

New Hampshire officials advise eclipse viewers to travel on state highways
See more Globe coverage of the 2024 total solar eclipse.
New Hampshire officials are advising those visiting Coos County next month to view the solar eclipse to travel on state highways and avoid local roads, the New Hampshire Department of Transportation said Monday.
The path of totality of the April 8 eclipse will enter the United States over Texas and head northeast into Maine before leaving the country into Canada, the Globe reported . Southern New England residents will catch a glimpse of a partial eclipse, but the most impressive views will miss the region.
Even so, the event is expected to generate significant traffic made up of people traveling to and from eclipse venues to roads throughout the state, the Department of Transportation said in a statement.
Some secondary highways and local roads are not designed to handle large volumes of traffic, and springtime in the North Country “can bring frost heaves and very soft shoulders,” officials said.
Travelers should also be “prepared for slow travel heading south after the eclipse on Monday evening,” the statement said.
“Traffic generated by the solar eclipse will impact roads throughout New Hampshire,” the statement said. “Please obey all officers assisting with traffic control as well as all signs and traffic control devices.”
Travel information will be posted to the Department of Transportation’s social media accounts, the statement said. Drivers can also visit newengland511.org for real-time traffic information for Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.
Anyone who has questions can email the state’s Joint Information Center at [email protected] or call 603-223-6169. Those seeking event information can visit NHSolarEclipse.com.

NH issues travel advisory for visitors seeing total solar eclipse

New Hampshire officials have a message to drivers going through the Granite State during the April 8 total solar eclipse: stay on the road.
The New Hampshire Department of Transportation, local officials, New Hampshire State Police and New Hampshire Homeland Security and Emergency Management urged all visitors to Coos County to use state highways to reach eclipse-viewing venues and for their return trips home, according to a statement on March 25.
On April 8, a total solar eclipse will be visible from North America as it makes its path from Texas all the way northeast to Maine. This path of totality indicates when and where the 31.6 million people living along that path are expected to see the eclipse happening, weather pending, according to NBC News.
NASA released a map detailing the trajectory of the 2024 total solar eclipse, with a clear view of the eclipse along the path starting in Mexico and moving across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine before exiting over the North Atlantic.
All of Coos County will be within the eclipse’s path of totality, where the sun will be completely blotted out by Earth’s moon, according to Seacoastonline . Local officials anticipate crowds as big as 50,000 during a period when the region usually sees a dip in tourism between snowmobile season and ATV season.

“Some secondary highways and local roads were not designed to handle large volumes of traffic, and springtime in the north country can bring frost heaves and very soft shoulders,” NHDOT said in its statement. “Traffic generated by the solar eclipse will impact roads throughout New Hampshire. Please obey all officers assisting with traffic control as well as all signs and traffic control devices. Be prepared for slow travel heading south after the eclipse on Monday evening.”
On the state’s tourism website , officials said there are limited roads leading in and out of the northern part of the state, so visitors should avoid any unnecessary travel on April 8.
“Do not plan to pull over on the side of the roadways to view the eclipse,” officials said, echoing NHDOT. “Doing so can put you at risk of getting stuck in mud or snow, and tow trucks will face major delays in getting to you.”
Vermont and Maine officials have shared similar warnings to visitors who intend to see the eclipse. Vermont State Parks urged drivers that if parking lots at viewing venues are full to not “park on the grass or in other areas of the park as resource damage is likely due to soft ground conditions.”
Along with planning ahead, Maine’s tourism website told visitors to be wary of unpredictable weather.
The northern end of New Hampshire will be the second New England state to see the eclipse, at 3:27 p.m., according to an interactive map from NASA . In the preceding minute, the eclipse should be seen next door in Burlington, Vermont, and Maine will be last to see the eclipse’s totality at 3:32 p.m.
Parts of North America should start to see the eclipse at around 11:07 a.m. PST (2:07 p.m. EST) off of Mexico’s coast near Mazatlan, according to NASA. Then at around 12:19 p.m. CST, the total solar eclipse will blot out the sun above Torreón in the state of Coahuila. It’s at this point that the duration of totality should last its longest, at 4 minutes and 28 seconds, according to the space agency.
By 3:40 p.m., Newfoundland will be the last stretch of North America to have a direct view of the eclipse on the path of totality before the path spills out towards the Atlantic Ocean. NASA projects that the eclipse will no longer be visible in North America at 3:55 p.m.
Official NH travel information will be posted to the NHDOT Facebook and Twitter social media pages, and motorists are encouraged to visit newengland511.org for real-time traffic information for Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.

Pet DNA company sends back dog breed results from human sample a second time
By Christina Hager
Updated on: March 13, 2024 / 9:25 AM EDT / CBS Boston
BOSTON - Have you ever wondered how accurate those pet DNA tests are? The WBZ I-Team put dog breed tests to the test, and it wasn't the first time some very surprising results came back.
"I personally do have concerns about the fact that, from a consumer standpoint, you don't always know what you're getting when you work with those companies," said Elinor Karlsson, who's a geneticist with the Broad Institute and UMass Chan Medical School. "There's not a lot of rules in this space."
Karlsson runs a lab called Darwin's Ark , digging into pet DNA science. It's an industry on track to be worth $723 million by 2030, according to Zion Market Research.
Last year, the I-Team checked up on commercial DNA testing companies, sending a sample from New Hampshire pet owner Michelle Leininger's human cheek to a company called DNA My Dog. The results showed she was part bulldog. Leininger joked, "some people would agree with that at times, but no, no," she said.
Back then, the company's service director Jessica Barnett responded. "The results provided would not be possible on a human sample."
Dog DNA test results from human sample
That prompted the I-Team to check a second time. Reporter Christina Hager swabbed her own cheek and sent samples to three different companies.
Orivet reported the sample "...failed to provide the data necessary to perform the breed ID analysis."
Wisdom Panel sent a message saying the sample "...didn't provide...enough DNA to produce a reliable result."
But for a second time, the results from DNA My Dog linked dog breeds to a human sample. The company reported back that Hager was 40% Alaskan Malamute, 35% Shar-Pei, and 25% Labrador.
DNA My Dog gives each sample a unique ID# to track samples and keep them straight. We contacted the Toronto-based company again. This time, despite repeated attempts, DNA My Dog did not respond.
Importance of pet genetics
Karlsson hopes it doesn't hurt people's interest in pet genetics. She said the science does have important value when it's done right. "We might be able to figure out which dogs are at risk of getting cancer, and screen them more often and be able to diagnose it earlier," Karlsson said. "We might be able to develop new treatments for that cancer."
She said pet owners should know the field of research has a long way to go. That's why she hopes more will donate DNA to her academic lab, Darwin's Ark .
The bigger the database, which she's making public and anonymous, she says the closer the science comes to unlocking the mysteries under all that fur.
Christina Hager is an Emmy Award-winning investigative reporter with the I-Team at WBZ-TV News. She has spent more than two decades covering major breaking news events across the country, including extensive daily coverage of the coronavirus pandemic.
