Tours To You

Your home for information about the touring broadway productions in north america, “parade” announces north american tour to launch in 2025.

theatre tour announcement

The producers of the acclaimed Broadway revival of  Parade , winner of the 2023 Tony Award ®   for Best Revival of a Musical and Grammy Award ®  nominee for Best Musical Theater Album, announced today that a North American Tour will launch in January 2025.

The production will run technical rehearsals and have its first public performances at Proctors Theatre in Schenectady, followed by its official tour premiere at Hennepin Theatre Trust’s historic Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis. Additional tour stops, casting and on-sale dates will be announced later.

In a joint statement, the producers of  Parade  said, “When  Jason Robert Brown ’s and  Alfred Uhry ’s masterpiece played its record-breaking and sold-out runs at New York City Center and on Broadway, it was heralded by critics for its stellar performances, magnificent score, impassioned direction, and of course, its timeliness. We are honored that we can bring  Parade  to audiences across North America so that they too can experience this once in a lifetime production in this moment in history.”

“It’s with immense pride for Hennepin Theatre Trust to launch the North American Tour of  Parade ,” says  Todd Duesing , Hennepin Theatre Trust president and CEO. “We’re honored that Minneapolis has been chosen as the official premiere city to tell this important story of the enduring power of human resilience and redemption. It’s a testament to our city’s cultural significance and artistic appreciation where diverse audiences come together to experience the magic of Broadway.”

Parade  is directed by Tony Award ®  winner  Michael Arden , with book by two-time Tony Award ®  winner, Pulitzer Prize winner, and Academy Award ®   winner  Alfred Uhry , music and lyrics by three-time Tony Award ®   winner  Jason Robert Brown , and co-conceived by 21-time Tony Award-winning legend  Harold Prince .

The production has received overwhelming acclaim since its debut. The  New York Times  said, “this revival, filled with deft flourishes by director Michael Arden, recalls an era of big casts, big stories, and big talent – a time when musicals actually felt like events.”  Entertainment Weekly  called  Parade  “the most gorgeous production on Broadway.”   Deadline  proclaimed that  Parade  is “a work of art! As commanding as any musical revival to hit Broadway in years.”  Time Out New York  stated that “Parade will echo for a long time to come. See it before the parade passes by.”

Leo and Lucille Frank are a newlywed Jewish couple struggling to make a life in the old red hills of Georgia. When Leo is accused of an unspeakable crime, it propels them into an unimaginable test of faith, humanity, justice, and devotion. Riveting and gloriously hopeful,  Parade  reminds us that to love, we must truly see one another.

Parade  played its final performance of its strictly limited Broadway engagement on Sunday, August 6, 2023. This production first premiered at New York City Center where it was instantly sold out, playing November 1-6, 2022.

The Grammy Award-nominated  Parade (2023 Broadway Cast Recording) , is available on all digital platforms.  Parade.lnk.to/BroadwayCastRecording

Theater Tour Announcement: YEMANDJA (Angélique Kidjo)

Post image for Theater Tour Announcement: YEMANDJA (Angélique Kidjo)

YEMANDJA , ANGÉLIQUE KIDJO’S FIRST FORAY INTO THEATER

After the world premiere at MASS MoCA this week, the co-commissioned Los Angeles premiere of Yemandja will take place at The Broad Stage in Santa Monica April 14, 15, and 16 at 7:30pm before the new work continues on tour  to  Cal Performances  at UC Berkeley on April 23 . Inspired by her ancestors, her family, and Africa’s resilience, Kidjo conjures up a timely theatrical work that is at both a family drama and historical thriller, redolent of Greek tragedy and infused with themes of love, betrayal, honor, free will, and the horror and injustice of slavery.

Yemandja features Global pop star and four-time GRAMMY award winner Angélique Kidjo, who plays the Yoruba orisha Yemandja, a cast of nine Broadway performers and an eclectic musical ensemble including African percussion, electric bass, guitars, and keyboards. Yemandja is a full theatrical work of magical realism that illuminates what happens when people are robbed of their culture.

The story is set in 19th century Dahomey, the West African kingdom that once occupied the territory that is now Benin; the slave trade is in full swing. In the port city of Ouidah, where the world of the gods is close to that of men, Yemandja—deity of water and fertility—has given her protégée Omolola a secret gift: the power of song to change the course of history. But there is one caveat: the power only works if your heart is pure. As DeSalta, a Brazilian slave trader who has struck a deal  with King Akaba and controls the city, kills or enslaves those around Omolola, she struggles to access her song, her desire for revenge threatening to surpass her will to be a positive force.

“This has been in me since I was a kid,” said Angélique Kidjo to Sharon Smullen in the Berkshire Eagle . “I heard the word “slave” when I was 9-years-old, and wanted to understand more. And to find a way to build bridges, not pointing fingers at each other, [but] working together to move forward. It’s important for me, I believe that when we work [with family] we create more sustainable, radical beauty. I want people to feel uplifted by the beauty of the story and see the possibilities that they have. People have power, but they don’t use it.”

Last year, Kidjo was honored as one of the BBC’s 100 most inspiring and influential women from around the world and named one of  Time  magazine’s “100 Most Influential People of 2021.”  Read the  Times  tribute by Alicia Keys here. Yemandja  is conceived by Angélique Kidjo, Jean Hebrail & Naïma Hebrail Kidjo, with book & lyrics by Naïma Hebrail Kidjo, and music by Angélique Kidjo & Jean Hebrail.  Hebrail is Kidjo’s husband of 35 years; they met when Kidjo left the then-repressive Benin for France. The text and lyrics are by their daughter, actor-writer Naïma Hebrail Kidjo. When Naïma was in college and studying Greek mythology, Kidjo was struck of the similarly of those stories with the orishas – she then spent a past decade developing Yemandja .

Sting to kick off intimate theater tour with pair of Fillmore Detroit shows in September

theatre tour announcement

Sting will play his most up-close-and-personal Detroit concerts in years when he launches his latest tour in the Motor City.

The ex-Police front man’s Sting 3.0 Tour will kick off at the Fillmore Detroit with shows on Sept. 17 and 18. The two-month tour of North American theaters will wrap up at L.A.’s Wiltern on Nov. 12-13.

Tickets for Sting’s Fillmore Detroit dates will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday. A presale for Sting fan club members activated today, and Citi cardholders will have access to presale tickets from 10 a.m. Tuesday through 5 p.m. Thursday.

Sting’s shows at the 2,000-capacity Fillmore will be his most intimate here since a 1999 gig at the same venue, then the State Theatre.

A Live Nation tour announcement says the upcoming tour, which teams the bassist-singer with guitarist Dominic Miller and drummer Chris Maas, will feature songs from across Sting’s “vast catalog through the urgent lens of a tight three-piece combo.”

It’ll be his first Detroit show in eight years. (Sting was scheduled to bring his stage musical “The Last Ship” to the Detroit Opera House in April 2020, but that run was canceled during the early days of the pandemic shutdown.)

Adrian Belew (L) and Steve Vai are teaming up for the King Crimson 'BEAT' Tour.

In the late ’60s, King Crimson was one of the most influential prog-rock groups in the world.

After disbanding in 1974, guitarist Robert Fripp reformed the band in 1981 with new members Adrian Belew , Bill Bruford, and Tony Levin. The quartet took their sound in a wholly new direction with their three African, post-punk, and minimalist albums “Discipline,” “Beat” and “Three of a Perfect Pair.”

Now, more than 40 years later, King Crimson sans Fripp and Bruford will take that trio of records on the road for their 2024 ‘BEAT Tour’ with guitar virtuoso Steve Vai and Tool drummer Danny Carey.

Along the way, the legendary outfit will stop into New York City’s Beacon Theatre on Oct. 5, Red Bank, NJ’s Hackensack Meridian Theatre on Oct. 9, Rochester’s Kodak Center on Oct. 19 and Albany’s The Egg on Oct. 21.

While Fripp isn’t part of the tour, he did give the upcoming jaunt its blessing.

“This is the project that Adrian Belew called me about last autumn, a project which I support and fully encourage, and discussed with Steve Vai recently at McCabes in Santa Monica. Even, I suggested the name,” the 77-year-old shared on Facebook .

For fans who want to see the daring rockers live, tickets are available for all concerts as soon as today.

Although inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Friday, April 5, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before tickets are officially on sale.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

THE WIZ October 3 – 22, 2023 WizMusical.com This groundbreaking twist on The Wizard of Oz changed the face of Broadway—from its iconic score packed with soul, gospel, rock, and finger-snapping '70s funk to its stirring tale of Dorothy’s journey to find her place in a contemporary world. Audiences get to enjoy the epic grooves of such beloved, timeless hits as “Ease on Down the Road,” which became the show’s break-out single, and the bona fide classic “Home” in this spectacular revival. Featuring a book by William F. Brown and a Tony Award-winning score by Charlie Smalls (and others), director Schele Williams ( The Notebook , revival of Disney’s Aida ), choreographer JaQuel Knight (Beyonce’s “Single Ladies”), Amber Ruffin (additional material), and Joseph Joubert (music supervision, orchestrations, & music arrangements) conjure up an Oz unlike anything ever seen before.  The Wiz design team will include scenic design by Academy Award-winning Hannah Beachler ( Black Panther , Beyonce’s "Black is King" and "Lemonade"), costume design by Emmy Award-winning and two-time Academy Award-nominated Sharen Davis ( Ray, Dreamgirls ), lighting design by Barrymore Award-winning Ryan J. O’Gara ( Thoughts of a Colored Man ) and wig design by Academy Award-winning Mia Neal ( Ma Rainey's Black Bottom ). A dynamite infusion of ballet, jazz, and modern pop brings a whole new groove to easing on down the road. As Bobbie searches for answers, she discovers why being single, being married, and being alive in the 21st-century could drive a person crazy.  Company features Sondheim’s award-winning songs "You Could Drive a Person Crazy," "The Ladies Who Lunch," "Side by Side by Side" and the iconic "Being Alive." Last month, The Rolling Stones released  “Hackney Diamonds,”  their first album of original material in 18 years.

Tuesday, the legendary English band announced they’re taking it on the road.

BEAT, Featuring Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, Danny Carey and Steve Vai, to Honor King Crimson with 2024 North American Tour

BEAT, Featuring Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, Danny Carey and Steve Vai, to Honor King Crimson with 2024 North American Tour

Prog-rockers rejoice: The music of King Crimson will grace the stage again. This fall, an all-star quartet of Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, Danny Carey and Steve Vai will unite as BEAT, a new act celebrating the second act of the progressive pioneers through a sprawling tour across North America. From a Sept. 12 departure from San Jose, Calif., to a Nov. 8 finale in Las Vegas, the supergroup will present 42 performances of mind-bending rock, presenting selections from King Crimson’s revered ‘80s trio of Discipline , Beat and Three of a Perfect Pair .

With two of the group’s former members and a blessing from Robert Fripp, this tour guarantees the most authentic live experience of King Crimson’s second iteration since its heyday four decades ago. Belew and Levin, who respectively contributed guitar and bass to the band, find well-suited support in Tool drummer Danny Carey and Steve Vai, the guitarist best known for foundational work with Whitesnake and Frank Zappa. On this exciting outing, founder Fripp shared to Facebook , “This is the project that Adrian Belew called me about last Autumn, a project which I support and fully encourage, and discussed with Steve Vai recently at McCabes in Santa Monica… Even, I suggested the name.”

BEAT will take off from San Jose, Calif.’s San Jose Civic on Sept. 12, beginning a five-stop run along the California coast from that will continue through Phoenix to three nights in the Lone Star State from Sept. 20-22. Next, the group will head to the Southeast, appearing at Atlanta’s The Eastern on Sept. 24 before a 13-show scattershot sprint up the East Coast, including engagements at Orlando, Fla.’s Hard Rock Live on Sept. 27, Washington’s Warner Theatre on Oct. 4, New York’s Beacon Theatre on Oct. 5 and Boston’s Shubert Theatre on Oct. 11, concluding with an Oct. 12 performance at Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom in Hampton Beach, N.H.

The quartet will then cross the Northern border for four presentations from Oct. 14-18, following its final Canadian show at Toronto, Ontario’s Massey Hall with four shows in the Mid-Atlantic from Oct. 19-23. After eight Midwest sets, bisected by an Oct. 28 staging at Nashville, Tenn.’s historic Ryman Auditorium, BEAT will wrap its celebratory run in the Mountain West, taking the stage at Denver’s Paramount Theatre on Nov. 6 before a final show at Las Vegas’ The Theater at Virgin Hotels on Nov. 8.

“The 1981 through 1984 King Crimson created a music all its own,” Belew shared in a release from the group. “Timeless. Beautiful. Complex. Fierce. For the fans who lived through it then, and the ones who never got to witness it, our aim is to bring it to life again. A monumental task but we’re going for it! There are not enough exclamation points to express my excitement!”

Pre-sale tickets for BEAT’s 2024 tour are available now with code BEATTOUR. General on-sale begins this Friday, April 5, at 10 a.m. local time. Read on for the complete list of tour dates.

Former King Crimson Members Form Beat, Announce 2024 Tour

P rog-rock band King Crimson may have disbanded decades ago, but that hasn’t stopped a few former members from forming their own supergroup. Adrian Belew (former King Crimson guitarist and vocalist) and Tony Levin (former King Crimson bassist) have formed a new group called Beat with Tool drummer Danny Carey and famed guitarist Steve Vai. The band’s namesake comes from King Crimson’s 1982 album Beat . And yes, if you’re wondering, KC frontman Robert Fripp has given his full endorsement for the project.

Less than a month after forming, the band has just announced a North American tour that’s set to kick off in September. The supergroup will perform across the US and Canada well into November. No supporting acts have been announced.

The Beat 2024 Tour will start on September 12 in San Jose, California at San Jose Civic. The tour will end on November 8 in Las Vegas, Nevada at The Theater at Virgin Hotels.

The main ticketing platform for the Beat 2024 Tour is going to be Ticketmaster , and there are a ton of different presale events going on right now. If you want in on the artist presale specifically, use the code “BEATTOUR”.

General on-sale kicks off on April 5 at 10:00 am local. If the presale event sells out your tour date of choice, give Stubhub a try. It’s a great platform for finding after-sale tickets, and your purchase will be guaranteed by the FanProtect Program. No scams here!

Your Theatre Play Press Release Should Include the Following Information

Are you dreaming of having your theatre or cast featured on the covers of magazines in your city? Do you want to see your theatre play invitation showcased on high authority media sites like ArtForum, Juxtapoz, LensCulture, or ArtNews? Are you hoping for a packed theatre hall on the day of your premiere?

Well, here’s the bold truth: Press release marketing is the secret sauce you need to increase your authority in the industry and grow your audience in the theatre halls

And you may have a lot to share about the play, the cast, the theme, or the director, but it’s important to stay focused on the most important points when writing your press release.

The goal is to create a captivating news announcement that attracts more viewers to your event. Anything else you want to share can be posted on a designated page for the theatre play, which you can link to in your press release.

So, make sure your theatre press release contains the 9 components below:

  • Catchy headline: Your headline should grab the reader’s attention and make them want to learn more about your event . Use action words and be creative .
  • Details about the play: Make sure to include the name of the play, the location, and the genre or theme. You may also want to share interesting facts about the sets, costumes, makeup, or special effects.
  • Quote from involved parties: Adding a quote from the director, actors, or theater manager can give your press release more personality and authenticity.
  • Relevant image: Consider adding an image of the company logo, cast, or actors to your press release. This can make your release more visually appealing and draw the reader’s eye.
  • Company website URL: Make sure to include a link to your company website where readers can learn more about your event and purchase tickets.
  • Release date: Indicate the date when the press release is being issued.
  • Dateline: Include the city and state where the press release is being issued.
  • Boilerplate: Include a short paragraph about your company, its mission, and its previous successes.
  • Contact information: Provide contact information for a person at your company who can answer questions about the event, including their name, company address, and phone number.

With these key elements, you can craft a press release that not only shares important details about your theatre play, but also entices readers to attend. Remember, the stage, the camera, the sound booth, and great media coverage can make all the difference in bringing your event to life.

– SAMPLE THEATRE PLAY PRESS RELEASE –

As a theatre company, you want your press release to be successful and get the attention it deserves. One way to achieve this is to learn from a successful press release example. A well-crafted press release not only informs but also engages readers and creates a story around your production. Here’s an example of a successful press release that effectively communicates the message of a theatre production:

Community Ensemble Zen Presents Midsummer Night’s Dream: A Modern Twist on a Timeless Classic San Francisco, CA – Oasis Theatre Center is proud to announce the return of Midsummer Night’s Dream, directed by Victoria Johnson, from September 15th to October 21st. This family-friendly production, presented by Community Ensemble Zen, features a cast of professional actors, including San Francisco veterans Daniel Parker, Sue Clark, and Greg Carol. After the success of the record-breaking inaugural production in 2019, which brought Shakespeare’s timeless story beyond the stage and into the aisles and lobbies, Victoria Johnson’s modern interpretation of Midsummer Night’s Dream promises to be even more immersive and captivating. Johnson’s reading of the Shakespearean magical story is combined with modern tunes, new dance choreography, and enhanced special effects, making this a must-see show for both theater enthusiasts and newcomers alike. The music has been specifically recorded for the play, helping to create an unforgettable experience that will transport the audience to another world. “The Community Ensemble Zen has worked tirelessly to bring this show to life, and we’re thrilled to share it with the San Francisco community once again,” says Victoria Johnson, director of the play. “Together, we will not only ponder over our most cherished dreams but will unleash our potential to realize them.” The Oasis Theatre Center, located at 54 Lombard Street, will host the show. Single tickets range from $50-$70 and are available for purchase online at http://www.oasis.com/midsummer or in person at the Oasis Theatre Ticket office. Midsummer Night’s Dream is not only a magical journey into Shakespeare’s world but also a celebration of summer performances and gatherings, making it an excellent choice for families and friends looking for a fun and unique experience. Don’t miss this limited engagement of Midsummer Night’s Dream. For more information, visit http://www.oasis.com/midsummer or call the Oasis Theatre at +1-880-706-6051. Contact: Name: Victoria Johnson Organization: Oasis Theatre Address: Buena Vista & Haight Street, San Francisco, CA 94117 Phone: +1-880-706-6051 Email: [email protected]

By examining this example, you’ll notice that it doesn’t necessarily focus on a protagonist or antagonist, or a particular conflict that needs to be resolved. Still, it manages to create a story that captivates readers and generates interest in the production.

With this in mind, you can learn how to write a compelling press release that captures your reader’s attention and gets real results. Follow our guide on how to write a successful press release for your theatre production to increase media attention and attract more viewers.

– THEATRE PLAY PRESS RELEASE TEMPLATE –

Crafting an effective press release is critical for the success of your theatre play production. That’s why we’ve built a template for you that includes all the necessary elements you can customize to match your style and tone. This template will help you to get started quickly and efficiently to ensure your message gets the attention it deserves.

Best Practices for Writing Your Theatre Press Release

The theater is a place where people come to witness the truth about life and the social situation, as famously said by Stella Adler. In today’s world, with endless options for entertainment, it’s crucial to communicate the unique experience that your theatrical event will offer to the audience through a well-crafted press release.

When writing your press release, make sure to tap into the emotions of your readers and highlight the magical experience they will have by attending your play. Build excitement by painting a vivid picture of what they can expect to see, hear, and feel during your performance. Will they be moved, uplifted, or inspired? Will they gain a new perspective on the world or human nature?

theatre tour announcement

Take into account the audience’s perspective and consider the last time they attended a play or visited a cinema. Emphasize the value of this experience and what makes it special. A well-crafted press release can capture their attention and create a sense of anticipation that encourages them to spread the word about your upcoming event.

By generating positive media attention and creating a buzz around your production, you increase the likelihood of attracting a diverse and engaged audience. Ultimately, a successful press release campaign can help you build a loyal fanbase and strengthen your reputation within the theater community. So, make sure to craft your press release with care and attention to detail, highlighting the unique experience that your theatrical event will offer.

Shea’s Performing Arts Center (Shea's PAC) is a campus of three theaters in downtown Buffalo comprised of Shea’s Smith Theatre, Shea’s 710 Theatre, and the historic crown jewel, Shea’s Buffalo Theatre. These venues boast varying styles of performing arts, but all are sure to please the audiences that attend. From touring Broadway to International collaborations and local rentals, Shea's PAC helps enrich the Buffalo Theatre District and supports Main Street's downtown business renaissance.

Shea’s Buffalo Theatre, the historic crown jewel of Shea's PAC, opened in 1926 under the moniker of “The Wonder Theatre”. Originally serving as a movie house under Paramount Pictures with “an acre of seats”, it would later stage vaudeville shows and play host to the likes of the Marx Brothers, Frank Sinatra, George Burns, Bob Hope and more.

Once Laube’s Old Spain, now a 237 seat “black box” theatre, Shea’s Smith Theatre has played host to Off-Broadway productions, comedy, and collaborative productions with local theatre companies since 2000. Somewhat of a chameleon space, it also offers ample room for events and special occasions with the adjoining Shea's Bistro & Bar.

Shea’s 710 Theatre is the latest space to be added to the Shea's PAC campus. Housing 625 seats and offering Broadway productions and plays produced by local and international theatre companies, it is considered a “thrust stage”, where the stage projects into the auditorium and audiences can sit on three sides.

Enhance your theatre experience at Shea’s with the ultimate welcome message in Shea’s Main Street Marquee! You choose the performance (limit of five per season, per household) and it will be on rotation for two hours before and an hour after the show! A once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity that you can share with family and friends, use on social media, or turn into a holiday card! The possibilities are endless.

L.A.’s Mark Taper Forum will reopen, but does Center Theatre Group have a sustainable path forward?

Four women stand outside the Mark Taper Forum, lighted up at twilight.

CTG Artistic Director Snehal Desai and Managing Director Meghan Pressman lay out a tentative road map for recovery, including the reopening of one of the city’s most important stages.

From the outside, the Center Theatre Group headquarters, a nondescript building across the street from the Music Center, is spectacularly unimpressive, the kind of place your mind wouldn’t even register as existing. But inside, the buzz of puzzle-solving energy might make you think you’ve stumbled onto the set of “Oppenheimer.”

CTG Managing Director and Chief Executive Meghan Pressman and Artistic Director Snehal Desai aren’t cracking nuclear codes. But they are working out a theatrical Rubik’s Cube that is harder than ever to solve.

An announcement is coming in the next few weeks about the new CTG season, and the big news is that the Mark Taper Forum , which suspended programming last summer amid a spiraling budget crisis, will be back in business (likely by next winter and possibly as early as the fall). The exact timeline and number of productions are still being worked out, but the idea is to consolidate offerings under one CTG banner rather than spotlight separate seasons at each of CTG’s three theaters.

This strategy is a sign of constriction, but it’s also an indication that old habits and expectations have to give way to stringent new realities.

Gordon Davidson , the founding artistic director of Center Theatre Group, built Los Angeles’ flagship theater organization in a vastly different era. The three venues — the Mark Taper Forum and the Ahmanson Theatre at the Music Center in downtown Los Angeles and the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City — each with its distinctive profile and following, don’t easily cohere in the best of times, and this period is one of the most difficult in the company’s history.

The Ahmanson in recent decades has dedicated itself to Broadway touring productions, with an emphasis on musicals. The Taper, the place where Tony Kushner’s “Angels in America” had its two-part world premiere, has long been the city’s most coveted stage for public-minded drama. And the Douglas, the smallest of the three venues and the one with the shortest history, is the Westside outpost that’s most hospitable to theatrical risk-taking.

As the money-making operation, the Ahmanson helped make possible the artistic ambitions of its less practical brethren. But those days were waning even before COVID-19 wreaked unfathomable havoc on performing arts institutions.

The post-pandemic picture is improving but from such a low that no one can feel confident about moving forward. Theater attendance hasn’t yet rebounded to pre-pandemic levels, production and administrative costs have skyrocketed with inflation, and donor fatigue has turned to exhaustion.

Nonprofit theaters nationwide are contending with this perfect storm. But CTG has an additional set of challenges that stem from its disparate three-part structure.

The Ahmanson can no longer be counted on as the cash cow, as the subscription model has become less reliable and competition for Broadway tours has grown more intense. Shows that might once have been expected to play at the Music Center are booked into the Hollywood Pantages or the Dolby instead. When CTG signs on as producer to improve its competitive standing, as it did for the wilted revival of “The Secret Garden,” it exposes the entire company to seismic financial shock when the show turns out to be a flop.

Playgoing has suffered acutely since theaters have reopened. Serious drama without a celebrity draw is an extremely tough sell in this era of entertainment-on-demand and social media hypnosis. For a large playhouse like the Taper with punishing built-in costs and an audience that has grown understandably fickle after seasons of muddled vision and earnest mediocrity, the producing picture can seem like a fast track to insolvency.

Finally, the Douglas is facing a temporary closure of its own. An impending construction project of a neighboring property will force the theater to halt operations for a few months next year, making programming extremely difficult to plan, as anyone who has dealt with the shifting calendar of a renovation project knows all too well.

A man and a woman pose in an empty theater.

No wonder Pressman and Desai have the air of emergency aid workers who have settled into the long daily haul of rebuilding after the initial phase of catastrophe. When I met with them last June, after CTG announced that it was pausing programming at the Taper, the interview was tense and at times chaotic and contradictory.

Newly appointed Desai , treated to a baptism by fire, hadn’t even signed his contract at that point. Pressman, furiously working to keep the lights on, deflected questions about artistic decision-making and financial management that harked back to leadership issues predating the pandemic fallout.

Nine months later, they presented a calmer front. The mood of the interview was sober. Progress has been made on the $8-million projected budget gap that prompted CTG to postpone the premiere of Larissa FastHorse’s play “Fake It Until You Make It” and suspend plans for the 2023-24 season at the Taper. But this is no time for phony exuberance.

It seemed almost impertinent to ask whether they believed a sustainable path for CTG was feasible in this uncertain environment, but the question needed to be asked. Pressman answered in the affirmative, but before she did there was a pause as lengthy as any in a Harold Pinter play.

“I think it’s feasible, otherwise I wouldn’t want to ask for people’s money right now,” Pressman eventually replied with quiet conviction. “I believe in the art we’re doing. I think [a sustainable path] is feasible, but I just don’t know exactly what that’s going to look like.”

A battle plan, however, is being refined. The Taper hasn’t been dormant in this period of hiatus. Experiments in the form of special events, community gatherings and legacy celebrations have been tried. The most high-profile of these offerings, comedian Alex Edelman’s solo show “Just for Us,” was such a big hit that it has already had two return engagements.

A casually dressed man onstage under a lighted arch

“We’re introducing shorter and more nimble programming models,” Pressman said. “We’ve been exploring different ways of engaging the community. I think those are all elements of a future sustainable Center Theatre Group, but we just don’t know how it will all settle.”

“I think the value of what we do is clear,” Desai said. “I just think it’s going to look very different.”

“And yet it’s got to feel the same,” Pressman interjected. “We have these venues that have this promise of high production value, of great American theater, the next best new play — all of that is still part of the DNA.”

Outstanding work, Desai agreed, has to be the raison d’etre of their collective efforts. He’s drawn to theater that is “timely, relevant and urgent,” even when offering a much-needed escape. Laughter and pleasure, he acknowledged, must be part of the equation. Theatergoers shall not live by moral instruction alone. But the nub of the issue for him is “how” they produce this art, the range of artists they’re inviting in, the openness to new forms and collaborative modalities.

“When we announce the season, you’ll see what the priorities are,” he said. His list, which he reeled off the top of his head, includes centering L.A. artists, adjusting the balance of how much CTG is producing versus presenting, expanding co-productions and making the Taper not just a writer’s theater but a director’s theater as well. His first season, he said, will give audiences a good indication of the direction he wants to head in.

Building the audience for the Desai era is not going to happen overnight. “It will take three to five years to establish,” he said. “That’s what I learned at East West Players . That’s how long [Pasadena Playhouse producing artistic director] Danny Feldman told me it took him.”

Pressman added, “That’s what it takes to teach them your taste. You have to give them like one element at a time. If you want to change up two or three elements in the way that you produce or the vocabulary you teach the audience, you can’t do it all at once. They’ll freak out.”

A winter production at the Taper is more or less set, but whether there will be a fall offering is still a question. When I inquired what it would take to open the Taper before next year, Desai asked if I could write a check for $3 million. He was joking, but fundraising is a crucial piece of this fraught puzzle.

CTG’s multimillion-dollar budget gap is smaller but not zero. “This is a multiyear effort,” Pressman said. “And this is still the recovery story.”

How much would CTG need to be whole? “We are in active fundraising mode for our next season and are just a couple of million dollars shy of our goal,” Pressman said. “What we’re building toward is long-term sustainability, which will mean a change in how we operate and an increase in support.”

A bed on a stage in an empty theater

“This is a marathon, and I would say we’re coming upon a big relay point,” Desai said. “As we announce next season, we want folks to be there and support us, especially those who said they were so bummed out about the Taper. I hope they’re the ones that right away reach out to us and subscribe. We hope there’s something for everybody at CTG — that is our goal each season.”

“Our partnership has been really fulfilling,” Pressman said of her working relationship with Desai. “And you know this is hard work. We feel a lot of trust and belief and understanding in each other’s vision and strategy. And that is part of the strong base we’ve been building to be able to do these difficult things with a great senior team and with great support from the community. We’re right around the corner from a really big announcement, and a lot of deep thought and planning went into it.”

And is the board of directors doing everything it can? “Our board is perfect!” Pressman replied, theatrically enunciating the words into my digital recorder.

Desai echoed this diplomatic sentiment in his own remarks: “We’ve been internally having conversations about what we need and board members have been the first folks to step up. They have been great stewards.”

What about boards in general? I asked, looking for candor on a subject that has been something of an obstacle for nonprofit theaters struggling to evolve institutionally and culturally. But the last thing any leader wants to do is alienate those who hold the power of rescue in this make-or-break moment.

March 20, 2024

A strong advocate of CTG’s “significant civic role,” Desai wants the Taper to once again be a forum for public dialogue. But he knows he can’t do it alone.

“We were just in London,” he said. “And they were telling us that theater in London is back. The numbers are higher than they were pre-pandemic. But they don’t have to compete with the 405, right? It’s also cold and rainy there. We just have a different ecosystem. I do hope we live in a city where the theater can be central.”

If I could write that check for $3 million that Desai was ostensibly kidding about, I would. Not because success is guaranteed. But because CTG leadership is rigorously grappling with its fate, testing new possibilities and committing itself to moving forward with as much integrity as fiscally possible.

And because I don’t want to live in a city that turns its back on those cultural pillars that took generations to build.

It was built to be the permanent home of the annual Academy Awards show, located, as it is, right across the street from the hotel (the Hollywood Roosevelt ) where the very first Oscar Night took place, and a stone's throw from the fabulous footprints at Grauman's Chinese Theatre .

After years of roaming from one location to another (the Shrine , the Music Center , even Grauman's itself), the Oscars have finally come home to Hollywood to stay.

And it is a dazzling home, with three balcony levels and twenty opera boxes to lend a somewhat European flourish to the surroundings.

Built at a cost of $94 million, this 136,000 square foot theatre, with 3,400 seats, was custom-designed for the special needs of Oscar Night and other live TV broadcasts.

The theatre is set back from the Boulevard, so that when the stars arrive in their limos on Oscar night, they walk north through the towering entrance portal, up "Awards Walk" (past backlit glass panels etched with the titles of previous Best Pictures), and up stairs into the theatre's four-story lobby, where they will find 26 giant-size photographic images (on clear plexiglass) of Oscar winners such as Brando, Grace Kelly, Jack Nicholson and Julia Roberts.

theatre tour announcement

The theatre is sponsored by the Kodak Company, which paid a record $75 million to have its name emblazoned on the new auditorium. That's certainly appropriate. Kodak has a Hollywood history of its own: the company has won eight Academy Awards over the years, and for 80 straight years (as of 2008), every single Oscar-winning movie has been produced on Kodak film.

Even though the theatre was custom-designed for Oscar Night, the Motion Picture Academy doesn't own the theatre, they simply rent the facility for the Big Event.

So the challenge was what to do with the theatre for the rest of the year, between Oscar Nights.

Their first non-Oscar bookings were for the American Ballet Theatre's "The Nutcracker" (for the 2001 Christmas season), followed by the Broadway hit musical "The Full Monty".

L ooking Forward, Looking Back

This season's theme considers how we contend with the historical, artistic, and socio-political past while striving to make sense of our present. Our season asks,

  • What legacies do we inherit? Which legacies do we leave behind?
  • How does comedy highlight drama?
  • Is it possible to amend racial, gendered, and inequitable legacies of the past through present and future efforts?
  • How does the past distort our understanding of the present and vice versa?

The year's season engages the Jesuit transcendental values of Beauty (Narrative) and Goodness (Ethics) as a critical lens to examine time (linear and non-linear forms), history (the stories we tell others/ the stories we tell ourselves), and destiny.

With the goal of making the Arts more accessible, and in keeping with the University's Jesuit mission and values, SCU launched a pilot program for the 2023-24 academic year that gives SCU students free admission to all performances of the Departments of Theatre and Dance, and Music.  Look for the symbols on the SCU•Presents website.

Jennifer Lopez is now touting her tour as a greatest hits show after canceling seven dates and struggling to sell tickets.

The name of the trek has changed from “This Is Me…Now” to “This Is Me…Live | The Greatest Hits,” according to Variety .

“The latest rebrand suggests a pivot from a tour focusing on the new album’s songs to one spanning her discography, a move that may entice listeners who didn’t connect with her latest material,” the outlet reported Tuesday.

Jennifer Lopez performing in 2014.

A source told Page Six that the tour will “convey the Jennifer Lopez live experience” and was not created solely for the music from her latest album. It is, however, a “celebration which includes the new album.”

The “Jenny From the Block” singer, 54, originally announced the tour in February to concur with her “This Is Me…Now” album and accompanying films.

However, Lopez quietly canceled scheduled shows in Nashville, Raleigh, NC, Atlanta, Tampa, Fla., and New Orleans last month.
