Not so remote after all: Record numbers of tourists are flocking to this tropical country
With over 1,000 coral islands, the world’s only underwater restaurant and idyllic beaches that inspire desktop backgrounds, the Maldives has many reasons to attract tourists. And they, indeed, make the trek. Last year, a record number of tourists visited the Indian Ocean country.
With over 1,000 resorts, the Maldives experienced a 12% increase in tourist arrivals last year compared to 2022 – the most ever for the atoll nation – totaling over 1.88 million tourists . In 2022, the island nation saw 1.67 million arrivals.
The most arrivals came from India, Russia, China, the United Kingdom and Germany, according to data from the Ministry of Tourism.
For the island nation, tourism is more than just welcoming new visitors. Tourism is the Maldives’ strongest economic driver, making up 58.3% of its total economy in 2022, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council. Over 70% of jobs in the Maldives are in the tourism industry.
The warm-weather country targeted 1.8 million tourists for 2023 and hit that number on Dec. 20, according to a press release by the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation. The country even celebrated with a special ceremony for the Dutch tourist who was the 1.8 millionth visitor.

“We are immensely proud of this achievement and remain committed to reaching the targets set for our tourism industry for next year as well,” said Fathmath Thaufeeq, CEO and Managing Director of MMPRC, in a statement in December. “Every visitor who arrives in the Maldives has their breath taken away by the natural beauty of our nation, the warm hospitality of our people, and the unmatched variety of places to stay and things to do.”
The Maldives aims to have even more tourists arrive this year, and its January arrival numbers are already surpassing the past two years. As of Jan. 3, 17,441 travelers entered the country’s borders, compared to 17,346 in 2023 and 15,618 in 2022.

Indians dominated Maldives' tourist arrival figures in 2023, data shows
The largest number of tourists who visited the maldives after india were from russia and china..
Indian tourists were the highest among visitors to the Maldives till December 2023, data from the country's tourism ministry showed. According to the Maldives tourism ministry, a total of 17, 57,939 tourists arrived in the island nation till December 13, an increase of 12.6 per cent compared to the 1.5 million arrivals recorded in 2022.
The largest number of tourists who visited the Maldives were from India (2,09,198) , followed by Russia (2,09,146) and China (1,87,118).
About 1,55,730, tourists visited Maldives from the United Kingdom, 1,35,090, from Germany, 1,18,412 from Italy, 74,575 from the United States, 49,199 from France, 40,462 from Spain, and 37,260 from Switzerland.
Aviation data has also indicated that Maldives remained a popular choice for Indians as a tourism destination for a few years.
In the October-December quarter of 2018 when the first phase of expansion to Maldives began, 51,000 passengers travelled between India and Maldives on direct flights. These went up to 60,000 passengers in the same quarter in 2019. This translates to nearly 700 passengers a day each way between India and Maldives!
Even as Covid-19 played spoilsport, the October to December quarter of 2020 saw 32,000 passengers each way. Come 2021, the numbers broke all records as India was past the deadly second wave and Maldives had started welcoming tourists with restrictions while most of the world was still out of bounds.
A bumper 1.15 lakh passengers flew to Maldives from India in the fourth quarter of 2021, which averages at 1250 passengers per day, on direct flights. This dropped in 2022 as the world opened up and Indians flew to destinations all across.
However, earlier this week, anti-India comments by some Maldivians, including one minister, on X have prompted several Indian celebrities and social media influencers to call for a boycott of the Maldives and its tourist spots.
The ongoing tussle involving barbs, trolls, etc. traces its origin to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Lakshadweep, which spurred interest in the Indian island among travel enthusiasts.
During his visit, Modi inaugurated several development projects and also explored Lakshadweep's beautiful beaches. Pictures of Modi while snorkelling in the sea went viral on social media and were top trending on X.

Maldives welcomes 1.7 million tourists in 2023
Wednesday, December 6, 2023 Favorite
In a remarkable achievement for the Maldives, the tropical paradise has welcomed over 1.7 million tourist arrivals in 2023, according to statistics released by the Maldives Tourism Ministry.
The latest figures, as of Sunday, showcase a significant surge, marking a 12.9 percent increase compared to the same duration last year, where arrivals stood at 1,508,307.
The Maldives continues to attract visitors at an impressive pace, currently witnessing an average of 5,099 daily tourist arrivals. This surge in tourism is a testament to the nation’s enduring appeal as a premier travel destination, renowned for its pristine beaches, turquoise waters, and luxurious resorts.
Leading the list of top source markets is Russia, contributing 11.3 percent of the market share with 193,269 arrivals. India closely follows with 185,987 arrivals, constituting 10.9 percent, while China secures the third position with 176,803 arrivals, making up 10.4 percent of the market. The diverse mix of source markets highlights the global allure of the Maldives as a sought-after destination for travelers worldwide.
The top ten source markets also include the UK, Germany, Italy, the US, France, Spain, and Switzerland, reflecting the diverse international appeal of the Maldives. These statistics underscore the country’s ability to attract tourists from various regions, contributing to its status as a global tourism hotspot.
The Maldives, recently honored as the World’s Leading Destination for the fourth consecutive year at the 2023 World Travel Awards, had initially set a target of 1.8 million tourist arrivals for the year. Later, the target was revised to an ambitious 1.9 million, a figure that would mark a historic milestone in the country’s tourism history.
With 63,644 operational beds across 1,261 registered tourist establishments, the Maldives continues to invest in its tourism infrastructure to ensure a world-class experience for visitors. The tourism sector, a vital contributor to the nation’s economy, plays a pivotal role in shaping the Maldives as a premier destination in the global travel landscape.
As the Maldives celebrates this tourism milestone, it reaffirms its standing as a destination of choice, offering unparalleled natural beauty, luxury, and hospitality to visitors from around the world.

Tourist arrivals in the Maldives reach 809,603 by mid-2022
July 4, 2022 | News | IMTM
Male’, Maldives, 4th July 2022 – The Maldives welcomed 809,603 tourists by 29th June 2022, halfway to its target of 1.6 million for this year.
The Ministry of Tourism initially set their target for 2022 at 2 million tourist arrivals, in December 2021. However, considering the changing geopolitical climate and global affairs, the Minister of Tourism shared that welcoming 1.6 million tourists by the end of 2022 would still be considered a remarkable achievement. This comment takes into light the loss of the China market and the impact of the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the Maldives’ tourism industry.
Similar to May, the top tourist markets for the Maldives remain the same with India leading with 14.8% market share. The UK falls into second place with 11.9%, followed by Russia (10%), Germany (8.4%) and Italy (6%). This shows a significant difference between the top 5 markets for the country in 2019. Back then, the leading markets were China, India, Germany, Italy and the UK, in that order. However, the China market has now fallen into 46th position.
Compared to June 2019, there is a 1.3% decrease in tourist arrivals in June this year. June 2019 recorded 108,709 tourists whereas June 2022 saw 107,281 tourist arrivals. This is a short fall compared to the sharp increase of 21.8% in arrivals last month. Yet, considering all monthly statistics comparing 2019 and 2022, tourism in the last month has done considerably well.

Maldives achieves highest ever tourist arrivals with over 1.8 million tourists in 2023.
Maldives has welcomed its 1.8 millionth tourist of the year – meeting its initial tourist arrival target for the year.
Hailing from Netherlands, Stefan Mathijs arrived in Maldives with his partner and children on Wednesday evening.
He was welcomed upon arrival at the Velana International Airport by Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal and Maldives Marketing and PR Corporation’s Managing Director Fathimath Thaufeeq, along with other top officials.
Maldives, which was recently crowned the World’s Leading Destination for the fourth year running at the 2023 World Travel Awards, had initially targeted 1.8 tourist arrivals for this year, but later revised the figure to 1.9 million – which will be the highest number of tourists recorded in the country’s history.
Speaking to press, Tourism Minister Faisal said he expects Maldives to achieve its latest target of 1.9 tourist arrivals.
He said the country is currently seeing an average of 5,000 tourist arrivals each day.
“This number undergoes changes each day. Therefore, its probably best not to say a direct figure,” he said.
He said that the development of the VIA is the administration’s biggest priority in terms of tourism development.
“It is one of President Dr. Muizzu’s key pledges to fishing the project within 8-9 months,” he said.
Stefan told reporters that he hadn’t expected to be honored as Maldives’ 1.8 millionth tourist of the year.
He said he came on vacation with his family, and looks forward to enjoy time in the water under the sun.
“Next, we are heading to Sri Lanka. We will return to Maldives again for five days and then return home,” he said.
