Chobe Forest Reserve, Botswana
Located in the Chobe Forest Reserve in Western Botswana, the private Ngoma Safari Lodge is located on the edge of a plateau, offering endless views over the seasonal Chobe flood plain. It also bears witness to magnificent sunsets – the ultimate way to celebrate the end of another perfect African day.
Easily accessible, yet completely private
Ngoma Safari Lodge is tucked away in the Chobe Forest Reserve on the western side of the transit route that runs between Kasane and the Ngoma border post with Namibia. We are far removed from the busy Kasane town where many large hotels and lodges are found, giving us an authentic feeling of intimacy and privacy.
Take to the waters on a river cruise
The expansive Chobe River can be explored in the comfort of a river cruise boat. This full-day safari is a wonderful way in which to absorb and appreciate the scale and splendour of this all-important water system and the many magnificent life forms it supports.
Big game and big herds
Lion, leopard, buffalo and elephant are very often seen, while hippo, crocodile, giraffe, sable and roan antelope also call the Chobe Forest Reserve home. The flood plain also attracts large migratory herds of zebra that follow a 300-mile round trip between the Angola basin and Chobe, making it the longest terrestrial migration route in Africa.
Unassuming and contemporary in design
Ngoma Safari Lodge is sensitively designed to celebrate its pristine location and views while blending into its natural surroundings. The thatch-roofed lodge is finished in volcanic rock that naturally occurs in the Chobe Forest Reserve and its suites nestle in bushwillow thickets and Zambezi Teak trees.

This was a dream stay at the lodge. The staff is amazing. Especially Zita who took very good care is us for drinks and food. Nothing was overlooked. Joe was an amazing guide. He would always try to position the jeep so the lighting was just right for our pictures.
Such a perfect setting for this magnificent trip. Attentive, wonderful staff, great accommodations, knowledgeable, fun safari guides! And we were lucky enough to get a bonus day when a flight was rescheduled! Everything was perfect!

Ngoma Safari Lodge
Lodge style Valley romance
Perfect service, panoramic views
Located within the Chobe Forest Reserve, bordering the Chobe National Park, Ngoma Safari Lodge commands stunning vistas over the Chobe River and Caprivi floodplain from its elevated perch on the rocky escarpment. River cruises, game drives, game walks and picnics in the bush are offered, of course, if you wish to explore the Chobe River and its surroundings. But some days you might feel like staying in bed, where an African nature documentary is in full panorama from your own private deck. Nestle yourself in the soft sheets with a fresh coffee and just watch. Can you think of any better start of your day? And not only the views are of excellent quality; with a highly trained staff, you will feel pampered during your entire stay. If you are questioning if a meal can be outstanding in the middle of the bush, the answer is a loud ‘yes!’ at Ngoma Safari Lodge. Brunch buffets, lunch, meals around an open fire, private dinners for lovebirds; the staff all prepares them with passion and commitment. At Ngoma Safari Lodge you experience the right balance between real Africa, and luxury – the perfect ingredients for an unforgettable stay.
Eight comfortable suites have distant river views and are constructed of brick and thatch. Each suite has an open-plan bathroom, with an enormous bathtub, inviting you to kick back after an active safari day. Or, unwind under the stars on your private deck with outdoor plunge pool and outdoor shower. Everywhere in your suite you find cosy nooks from which to appreciate the ambiance. Two of the rooms feature extra beds making them suitable for families. Built adjacent to a magnificent Baobab tree – the tree with a beautiful trunk and wide crown - the appealing central areas have an ethnic flavour, with the bar, sitting area and outdoor zones boasting magnificent views. Ngoma’s thatched buildings are all made from natural materials and blend seamlessly with their surroundings. Local fabrics, building materials and handmade artefacts provide a local touch. Fully immerse yourself when you nestle in on the deck with a cold drink and take in the unsurpassed views over the legendary Chobe River. See elephants, towering giraffes, zebra and buffalo grazing on the floodplain – all in the valley right in front of you.
Activities at Ngoma Safari Lodge
The guides – knowledgeable and fearless - leave no stone unturned. Born and raised in the area, they all have a zeal for wildlife, radiating through the safari activities. Explore the bush with them and let their cheerfulness take over. So, what are your options after waking up with a light breakfast and bird-song orchestra? At Ngoma Lodge you can explore the park in many ways: exciting morning game drives, night drives in the Forest Reserve concession, cultural interactions with surrounding villages, or a full day drive with picnic in the bush or a river cruise (the perfect way to spy on hippos and crocodiles). In between all these activities, unwind after brunch or lunch on sundecks, keeping an eye out for the large herds of elephant and buffalo for which Chobe is world-renowned. Top it off with excellent food - the gourmet burger is especially unforgettable - accompanied by African wines and, of course, great service. High end? Yes, but the intimate, warm staff and authentic feel make this lodge a true Chobe paradise - one that you will leave with a deep Botswana connection in your heart.

We travelled with Falcon Safaris in Zimbabwe and Botswana for 16 days. Falcon designed a wonderful trip with private guide to the most interesting sites in both countries. The organization of the whole trip was excellent, flights within the country, accommodation and activites. The guides were very knowledgable and told us a lot about the countries, their history, people, economy and much more.
Dr. Renate Vorwerk
Our Consultant Vimbai was very helpful and accommodating. We stayed at the Elephant hills hotel which was nothing short of amazing. Our activities included a helicopter flight, dinner cruise as well as a morning game drive. All the activities were absolutely amazing.
Our trip consisted of accommodation and tours in Victoria Falls, transfers to Botswana, accommodation and photography safaris there, then transfers back to Zimbabwe. Transfers, accommodation again in Vic Falls. My communication was with Ludwick who was amazing. He went way above and beyond normal service to make me feel confident in the organisation of our trip
David McCann
We worked with Gertrude to schedule and organize everything and she did an excellent job. I asked a lot of questions via e-mail and she answered everyone in a timely helpful manner. Our guide at Victoria Falls was also great. He met us at the airport, provided a thoughtful tour of the Falls and got us to our next guide in Botswana.
Falcon safaris have given my the correct advice with excellent service. The only suggestion will be to work closer with the lodges to confirm bookings as soon as possible. We have booked and pay our deposit a year in advance. We have only receive our final convermation from Chobe Safari lodge a week before departure.
I thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon with the elephants. I rode an 8 year old female, her name is not in my head, and it was magical. She loved her treats at the end of the ride and her trainer was a lovely man. We talked the whole hour and he taught me so much about these magical creatures.
Gertrude was always very prompt in replying during the planning process and very helpful with visa information. This trip to Africa was our first and we started with Kenya and a 10 day safari. We wanted to experience water camps and lodges as well so worked with Falcon to make that happen.
myself and my 13yr old daughter used Falcon Safaris for all our outings as well as airport transfers. Canoeing, Devils Pool visit and Elephant back ride. They were all fantastic especially Vimbai and Edna. We had an amazing time and nothing was too much trouble to sort out for us.

Ngoma Safari Lodge
About Ngoma Safari Lodge
Small, smart and relaxed yet stylish, Ngoma Safari Lodge is arguably the epitome of contemporary safari chic.
From its vantage point lining the edge of the escarpment, the lodge looks across the Chobe River towards Namibia, the floodplains liberally dotted in the drier months with thirsty zebra, elephant, buffalo and more. Those elephant have even been known to check out the private plunge pools of the lodge’s chalets – though normally you’ll have exclusive use of yours! This, and almost every feature of Ngoma, shares the panorama, from the patio and outdoor shower of each split-level chalet to the huge glazed windows within, along to the open-sided bar, lounge and dining areas that are terraced down the hillside, culminating in a series of wooden decks and a cooling pool. Food is taken seriously here, too, with innovative dishes rubbing shoulders with old favourites, while individual tables and flexible timings add a further layer of intimacy. The lodge’s location in the Chobe Forest Reserve allows for night drives and walks, which are not possible within the national park, though drives into the park and cruises along the river – some from a private jetty – are among the options for a complete yet personal safari.

When to go to Chobe National Park
Our month by month guide: What it's like to visit Ngoma Safari Lodge in Chobe National Park
Botswana in January
January is at the peak of Botswana’s rainy season. These rains are often in the evening and are short but heavy, with occasional thunderstorms. Temperatures will still be high but cooler than October–December. Animals are generally dispersed, and not easy to spot, with the best game viewing found in the north of Chief’s Island and on the eastern and southern sides of the Okavango Delta . January is also one of the best months to see the zebra and wildebeest migration in the Makgadikgadi salt pans and at Nxai Pan . Migratory birds abound throughout northern Botswana, along with a large number of breeding flamingos in the flooded salt pans. Rates are generally relatively low, making this a good time to visit on a budget.
- Temperatures are still warm, with occasional thunderstorms
- The bush feels alive; birdlife is at its most spectacular
- Big game is dispersed
- Zebra & wildebeest migration at its height
- Availability in lodges and camps is often very good
A good time to visit, with pros & cons
Weather in January
Botswana in February
The weather in February is very similar to January, with heavy rain most days – often towards evening – and temperatures on the high side, albeit cooling off from the rains and surface water. Across northern Botswana, the landscape feels green and alive; insects and smaller animals are more easily seen, and many birds and animals are raising their young. However, the rains have created pools and waterholes in the bush and thicker vegetation and tall grass makes it trickier to spot larger animals. Further south, the game viewing is beginning to pick up in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Visitor numbers remain low, with attendant rates and availability in camps and lodges.
- Temperatures still warm with occasional thunderstorms
- Many animals with young; birdlife at its most spectacular
- Game viewing picking up in the Central Kalahari
- Visitor numbers are low, so camp availability can be very good
This is not a great time to visit
Weather in February
Botswana in March
March usually sees Botswana’s main rains starting to tail off. Many days will be clear, with a strong sun raising temperatures. On some days clouds will build, and the late-afternoon may see a short thunderstorm. Across the country, the landscape is green and alive. Many birds and animals are finishing raising their young. Much of the migration is now moving north towards the Savute area or Chobe National Park, though thick vegetation still makes it trickier to spot even larger animals. March is one of the best times to be in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, where many of the pans fill up and animals come to drink, closely followed by predators. With few visitors in most areas, rates may still be relatively low.
- Variable weather: rains tailing off but still hot
- Occasional small thunderstorms
- Many animals finish raising their young; birdlife still spectacular
- The best time to visit the Central Kalahari Game Reserve
- Few tourists visit during March, so rates often low
Weather in March
Botswana in April
During April the rains have usually stopped, though there may be still be the odd late downpour. This results in clear skies and a lovely green, lush landscape. Night-time temperatures usually start to drop during April with this being most noticeable in the Central Kalahari and the Makgadikgadi areas. The Central Kalahari is really coming into its own at this point and from April through to May/June the Savute region is a particular favourite of ours, with good predator/prey interaction. In much of northern Botswana, the camps are coming into their “shoulder” season, so rates are on the rise but still relatively low.
- Evening temperatures cooling with just the odd shower
- Northern Botswana is green and lush
- Many animals still with young; good predator/prey interaction
- Central Kalahari and Savute the best places for wildlife
- A popular shoulder season time to book. Rates relatively low
Weather in April
Botswana in May
May is a very popular month to visit Botswana, often the last month of the “shoulder” season before camp rates hit their peak. While there is very little chance of rain, the annual floods from Angola are starting to make their way through the northern part of the Delta, and will eventually reach the majority of the Okavango late June. With cooler temperatures morning and evening, predator activity tends to be higher, although tall grasses can still obstruct game viewing. With cool crisp evenings, and the game viewing really picking up, this is the favourite time to visit for many of our team – and camp bookings throughout Botswana are snapped up quickly.
- Cool mornings and evenings with little chance of rain
- Game viewing is beginning to pick up
- Predator activity increasing, though grasses still quite high
- Last month of “shoulder” season for most camps
- Availability goes quickly throughout Botswana
A very good time to visit
Weather in May
Botswana in June
June is the real start of the dry season. Temperatures are still cool in the morning and evenings with night-time temperatures sometimes reaching freezing, rising to 25–30 degrees Celsius during the day, with blue skies. Along with this comes a certain clarity to the air, favourable for serious photographers. Surface water and waterholes begin to dry up during this period and many animals begin to congregate around the remaining areas with water. Visibility is improving as the grass is beginning to die back, and game viewing is very good everywhere, with particular improvement in the Kwando–Linyanti areas. Not surprisingly, camp availability is becoming scarce and rates are high.
- Warm, comfortable days; cold nights, morning & evenings
- Air clarity favours serious photographers
- Wildlife is gravitating to waterholes, making game-viewing productive
- Grasses beginning to die back
- Most camps are into peak season, with rates correspondingly high
Fantastic: the very best time to visit
Weather in June
Botswana in July
Evenings and mornings are still cool in July, and this combined with great game viewing makes it one of the most popular times to visit Botswana. Vegetation is really thinning out now making game easier to spot, with the few remaining waterholes attracting lots of wildlife. The north-eastern side of Chobe National Park, along the Chobe River, is also very rewarding, although this area can become very busy. Game viewing is extremely good in the Khwai areas, too, but again, this is a public area and – unlike in the private concessions of the Delta – vehicle numbers can be high. Camps are now very much into the peak season, and tend to be full.
- Comfortable days; cold nights, morning & evenings
- Game viewing very good as vegetation dies back and waterholes dry out
- Chobe Riverfront and Khwai areas become very busy
- Private concessions helps to avoid potentially high vehicle numbers
- Now very much into peak season
Weather in July
Botswana in August
August is a popular time to visit Botswana, coinciding with the European summer holidays, and camp availability is difficult. Temperatures are generally cool at night, and comfortable during the day, although towards the end of the month they can rise above 35 degrees Celsius (albeit with low humidity). Cloudless skies bring spectacular star-gazing. Wildlife has congregated around the few remaining water sources, and much of the vegetation has now died back, so wildlife viewing tends to be varied and rewarding, particularly in the Okavango Delta. Depending on the rains in Angola this can also be one of the best times to see the delta floods at their peak.
- Dry, warm days, with mainly cool nights
- Cloudless skies with spectacular stars at night
- A fantastic time for wildlife watching, particularly in the Okavango
- Traditionally one of the best times to see the Delta in full flood
- Peak season: so high rates and many lodges full
Weather in August
Botswana in September
September is another favourite month for some of our team members. Daytime temperatures are getting warmer, but nights remain cool. With the drier conditions, most of the greenery has faded from the landscape, and dust or even smoke create hazy conditions that aren’t great for photographers – though this does result in fantastic sunsets. This is another extremely good month for game viewing, with large numbers of elephant and buffalo congregating in the Chobe region and migrant birds begin to return to Botswana. Rates remain high – and availability correspondingly low.
- Warmer days and cool nights
- One of the best months for wildlife viewing
- Large congregations of elephant & buffalo in the Chobe region
- Hazy conditions less good for photographers, but brilliant sunsets
- High season rates; many lodges & camps are full
Weather in September
Botswana in October
October is the one of the hottest months of the year, and usually one of the driest. Towards the end of the month the chances of rain can increase, and along with this can come greater humidity. The air is usually dry and hazy, making photography more challenging, but the lack of water and vegetation result in very good big-game viewing. Water levels are now much lower, so water-based activities such as boating, mokoro trips and fishing cease in many of the camps which are not on major tributaries.
- Hot temperatures, with the chance of rain towards the end of the month
- Great big-game viewing
- Less opportunity for water activities in camps as floods recede
- Hazy air not great for photographers
- Final month of the peak season in camps
Weather in October
Botswana in November
November usually marks the end of the dry season in Botswana, when increasing temperatures drive a rise in humidity, sometimes culminating in the first rains. These are often short but very heavy showers in the late afternoon or during the night, and can be spectacular. The rains lower the temperatures slightly but bring a flush of green back into the dry landscapes. As waterholes in surrounding areas fill, wildlife will gradually begin to disperse as it is not restricted by the availability of water. November is a great time for birdwatching, with the arrival of many migrant birds. The first couple of weeks are very popular with travellers looking for great game viewing at lower rates as Botswana enters the “shoulder” season.
- Hot in the middle of the day; sometimes humid
- Heavy showers increasingly likely as the month progresses
- Wildlife watching still good, but less reliable once it rains
- Migrant birds start to arrive
- “Shoulder” season brings mid-range rates in camps
Weather in November
Botswana in December
The rains in Botswana have now started, bringing some respite to the high temperatures. Game viewing becomes harder as wildlife is more dispersed but great sightings can still be had in the right areas such as Khwai and the Kwara and Mombo concessions. Areas such as the Makgadikgadi Pans change completely with the salt pans becoming covered in a shallow layer of water attracting large numbers of breeding flamingos. Low-season rates at many camps are a draw.
- Temperatures starting to fall from the highs of October/November
- Very high chance of rain, usually large heavy storms for short periods
- Flamingos return to breed at the Makgadikgadi Pans
- Wildlife more dispersed, so game viewing more challenging
- Typically low-season rates in the camps

Excursions from Ngoma Safari Lodge
Optional extra day-trips and excursions possible whilst you're staying at Ngoma Safari Lodge. Talk to us: these are usually best arranged before you go.
Helicopter Flight - Botswana
Various: from 30 minutes to half a day.
Low-flying, agile and offering superb views, helicopters are an ideal way to move around the Okavango Delta. You can use them instead of fixed-wing inter-lodge transfers or as an addition to other wildlife watching activities, and of course, helicopters can hover to allow that perfect pic, whereas fixed-wings can’t.

Inside Noka Camp, South Africa's futuristic safari lodge
T he sound of free-flowing water can sometimes give the illusion of being closer than it is. At Noka Camp, I searched for the source of this burble only to discover that I’d wandered to the edge of a clifftop and was staring down at the Palala River below as it crashed against the rocks of the Lapalala reserve. It was only when my gaze shifted back to where I’d come from that I realised that the five sandy-coloured tents that were my temporary home barely seemed to touch the rugged ground.
Low-impact tourism, conservation and human development are at the heart of Lepogo Lodges, which runs Noka Camp, just three hours’ drive north of Johannesburg in the Waterberg region. The lodge has been constructed to leave as little footprint as possible, and it is one of few camps to plough 100% of all profit back into protecting the reserve and empowering the communities around it. Sustainability is key to this ethos. It is completely off-grid, so it has to generate its electricity from a 250m-long solar walkway connecting each villa, plus it is also free of single-use plastic and guests can choose from various programmes to offset their carbon footprint.
With fewer humans per square kilometre than any of the ‘Big Five’ wildlife tourism destinations in Southern Africa, nature did most of the talking in Lapalala’s 48,000 hectares of wilderness. The grunts from prankish baboons and the cheery calls of crested francolins made for a comforting soundtrack to the night’s slumber before a knock on the door arrived to prepare me for the dawn game drive. The biting cold jolted me awake; the wildlife took care of the rest.
A pack of lions, shining in the golden hour, passed inches from our vehicle and, once the stars aligned, other members of the magnificent seven – leopard, elephant, rhinoceros, Cape buffalo, cheetah, wild dog – followed. But while the big game is the draw here, there are other activities to calm the adrenaline, such as a leisurely fishing trip along the Palala or a short trek to see Bushman cave paintings and Iron Age sites dating back millennia.
One of the highlights was having post-safari sundowners, which showcased the reserve, its expanse and the changing hues as the sun burns the African sky. Then, having dragged my weary self back to the lodge – replete with unforgettable experiences – a toasty firepit awaited me alongside a three-course meal prepared from vegetables grown just outside the reserve. Finally, there was only one thing left to do: I lay on the sky bed in my room and drifted away under the star-studded heavens to the soothing melody of the Palala’s waters.
Booking information: Nightly rates start from £851 per person on an all-inclusive basis; book at lepogolodges.com
