A daily listing of changes or closures can be found at the main entrance of both parks. Please check upon arrival.

The Zoo's Animals in Action Experience and Inside Look Tours get you VERY close to exotic wildlife. The Zoo's Wildlife Presentations give guests an opportunity to learn about our wildlife ambassadors from expert wildlife care specialists, and find out about San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance's conservation work around the world. Additionally, Wildlife Care Specialist Talks at the Zoo provide guests with insights about wildlife and their habitats.

At the Safari Park , our Journey Into the Wild presentation (daily at 2 p.m.) is how you can join wildlife care specialists at Benbough Amphitheater as they introduce you to wildlife ambassadors representing San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance’s worldwide conservation work. Learn about amazing wildlife—from South America's Amazon and right here in our own backyard, in the Southwest of the United States!

Most of our Safaris at the Safari Park and other Special Experiences at both parks are uniquely designed to get you closer to wildlife!

There really isn't any special time that more wildlife are in view, although many of our animals are early risers and may be a bit more active in the morning. In our concern for the many endangered species that we house at our facilities, we have built habitats that mimic natural environments. Like natural environments, these areas give the animals plenty of room to hide. We have found the ability to hide is important to the well-being of many species.

Wildlife may be taken off public view for a variety of reasons including environmental conditions, health issues, and behavioral concerns. In addition, many of our habitats are designed to allow animals to remove themselves from visitor view at any time. For these reasons, it is not always possible to predict or note these exceptions before the fact. Refunds or exchanges are not possible in cases of inclement weather or habitat closure.  A daily listing of changes or closures can be found at the main entrance of both parks. Please check upon arrival.

No. Pets, comfort animals, and emotional support animals are not permitted at the Zoo or Safari Park. Because we house significant populations of rare and endangered species, both the Zoo and the Safari Park are considered to be quarantined facilities. State and federal regulations for such facilities do not allow for the access of pets, comfort animals, or emotional support animals accompanying guests to these facilities.

We do not offer kennel service at either park.  Contact Us so we may provide a list of local kennels.

Our facilities are open every day of the year, including ALL holidays, rain or shine!

Depending on the extent of rain, some animals (primates, specifically) may choose to go into their off-view areas, although many animals seem unaffected by rain. Animals may be taken off public view for a variety of reasons, including environmental conditions, health issues, and behavioral concerns. In addition, many of our habitats are designed to allow animals to remove themselves from visitor view at any time.  For these reasons, it is not always possible to predict or note these exceptions before the fact.

While we work hard to provide an exceptional guest experience, occasionally habitats, tours, restaurants, transportation, entertainment, or services change or close without notice and without liability due to refurbishing, capacity, weather or special events. A daily listing of changes or closures can be found at the main entrance of both parks. Please check upon arrival.

No. The Safari Park is and always has been a walk-through sanctuary in which members and guests can purchase optional guided Safari tours to enhance their visits and get closer to animals. Please see our Safari Tours tab on the Park's home page for more information about these exciting tours and programs!

Occasionally, nostalgic visitors confuse the Safari Park with an unaffiliated, drive-through animal attraction bearing a similar name that was once located 77 miles north of the Safari Park in the Irvine/Laguna Hills area. That attraction operated from 1970 to 1984. The site was then repurposed and spent 25 years as a water park before becoming what is now a community of upscale apartment homes.

Hours vary throughout the year.

  • For current San Diego Zoo hours, click here .
  • For San Diego Zoo Safari Park hours, click here .

The Zoo and Safari Park are approximately 35 miles apart from each other. The drive time between the two parks is about 45 minutes to one hour, depending on traffic and other factors. The Zoo is located in Balboa Park, just north of downtown San Diego, at 2920 Zoo Drive, San Diego, CA 92108. The Safari Park is located at 15500 San Pasqual Valley Road, Escondido, California 92027.

  • View the San Diego Zoo & Safari Park in a larger map.
  • Further directions for the San Diego Zoo can be found here.
  • Directions for the Safari Park are here.

San Diego Zoo: The quickest way to the Zoo from the San Diego International Airport is by taxi or ride share, an 11-minute, 5-mile ride. Amtrak railway service (800-872-7245) travels up and down the coast between Los Angeles and downtown San Diego.  The #7 bus stops at the Zoo. Information about public bus transportation can be found on the web at www.sdcommute.com or by calling 619-233-3004. Useful information can be obtained from the San Diego Visitor Center, 619-236-1242.

Safari Park: Amtrak railway service (800-872-7245) travels up and down the coast between Los Angeles and downtown San Diego, stopping in Oceanside. From Oceanside, a light rail service called the Sprinter travels to Escondido, approximately 22 miles. Once you arrive at the downtown Escondido Transit Center via the Sprinter, the quickest way to the Safari Park is by taxi or ride share, an 11-minute, 7-mile ride. You can find more information about the Sprinter on the web or by calling 760-967-2001.

There is one public bus that stops at the Safari Park; however, depending upon your departure point, connecting schedules may mean a travel time of approximately 25 minutes from the Escondido Transit Center and up to 3 hours each way from San Diego. Bus service is very limited on weekends and holidays. Information about public bus transportation can be found on the web at www.sdcommute.com or by calling 619-233-3004. Overall, the easiest way to reach the Safari Park is by car. Useful transportation information can be obtained from the Escondido Visitor Center, (760) 839-4777.

It's possible, but we don't recommend it.  We recommend spending a minimum of four to six hours to see some of the Zoo and a minimum of four to six hours at each park to experience the San Diego Zoo and the Safari Park.

Since there is so much to see and experience at our parks, and to get the most from an unhurried visit, we recommend planning a multi-day visit. Because each park requires a separate admission ticket, there are several multi-day ticket options that allow you to enjoy both parks at a relaxed pace!

Yes!  For same-day re-entry, guests should have their hands stamped at the exit, and re-enter through the main turnstiles, showing their tickets and hand stamps.

Members may show their membership cards and ID to re-enter.

Children 15 years old and younger must be accompanied by an adult age 18+ with a valid form of entry.

Smoking (including e-cigarettes) is not permitted anywhere on Zoo or Safari Park grounds or parking lots. Zoo guests should know smoking is not permitted in Balboa Park. Guests who wish to smoke are welcome to have their hands stamped for same-day re-entry when leaving our grounds to smoke.  Please keep your ticket! Safari Park guests should keep their parking receipts to avoid having to pay twice for same-day parking when leaving the parking lot for and returning from smoke breaks.

We recognize the seriousness of food allergies and although we would like to accommodate all guest requirements, as a not-for-profit organization we are unable to do so. Our kitchens are not equipped to prepare food separately for guests who are sensitive to certain ingredients.  Each restaurant can provide an ingredient list for the items available for purchase; however, we cannot assure that other ingredients may not be in the preparation environment. Guests are welcome to bring personal food items into our parks.  Large food storage containers such as coolers are not permitted on grounds and no facilities are available for food storage.

Yes! Guests are welcome to bring their own single-person food supply, in small containers, into our parks. No facilities are available for food storage other than lockers. Yes. We are honored to welcome guests to our two world-renowned wildlife sanctuaries—the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park—and we strive to ensure that every guest’s visit is special. Therefore, we ask our guests to respect our wildlife, our valued team members, our volunteers, and each other.

Guest behavior that is unlawful, disruptive, offensive, or objectionable could be cause for either the Zoo or Safari Park to refuse admission and/or remove the offender from our premises. If serious enough, local law enforcement and legal action may follow. Thank you in advance for respecting each other, our team members, our volunteers, and the wildlife in our care during your visit.

Getting Involved

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance is a not-for-profit organization that works to conserve endangered species through management plans for our collections and for individual species. We are unable to accept animal or plant donations, because to do so would mean that we would have less room for the species with which we are currently working.

All potential products for every area have to go through San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance's Purchasing Department. Due to the large number of requests we receive, we ask that all inquiries to our buyers’ office be made in writing. You may send a cover letter along with a prospectus or a catalog to: Purchasing Department, San Diego Zoo, P.O. Box 120551, San Diego, CA 92112. Please understand that due to the large volume of inquiries received, this office cannot personally respond to each request.  A representative of this office will respond if an inquiry shows promise.

The San Diego Zoo’s policies require that all media requests be screened by our Public Relations office. Media are asked to contact 619-685-3291 or email [email protected] for assistance.

As you can imagine, we receive hundreds of emails each week from guests requesting an interview with our wildlife care specialists. We are unable to accommodate all such requests as this would take our wildlife care staff away from their primary responsibilities to the animals in their care. Information about animal species may be found on our San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance Animals & Plants website .

The Zoo is located adjacent to downtown’s Balboa Park. San Diego Zoo 2920 Zoo Drive San Diego CA 92101 619-231-1515

  • Further directions for the San Diego Zoo can be found here.

We're happy to match speakers with interested groups when possible. As a not-for-profit we charge a speaker fee which helps off-set our costs and funds our mission. Fee covers speaker up to one hour and does not include a wildlife presentation or filming/recording fees. If your group is interested, please complete this form CLICK HERE and we will contact you.

A "pending hold" is a banking industry practice of authorizing electronic transactions made with a debit or credit card and holding this balance as unavailable either until the merchant clears the transaction (also called "settlement") or the hold "drops off."

More than one hold can appear on the account when a guest inadvertently charges a card multiple times during the same transaction (usually by repeatedly clicking on "Submit Order"). Basically, each time a debit or credit card number is submitted, it is transmitted as an electronic inquiry to determine if funds are available to cover the potential transaction. The bank automatically places a hold on the amount(s) and retains the funds until the merchant clears or "settles" the transaction, usually at the close of business each day. The issuing bank still has your money (which is why it is "pending"), and these holds usually drop off after one to three business days, depending on the issuing bank's policy.

Whenever possible, no earlier than 24 hours after the initial transaction and at the issuing bank's request on letterhead, we are happy to assist in resolving "pending hold" issues. It's important to note that while a request to release a hold can be made, not all banks will honor one. And even if they do, the release of funds may not be instant. Ultimately, merchants (such as the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park) do not have the ability to release an authorization hold; the only entity that can do so is the issuing card's bank.

If a refund is approved, it may take up to 1–2 weeks to receive your refund, depending upon your bank's refund processing timeline.

Baby giraffe will be raised by San Diego Zoo, not mom

Days after bumpily arriving into the world at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, a giraffe calf that had difficulty nursing is now being raised by the zoo.

For the next six months or so, zoo staff will bottle-feed the male calf with formula devised especially for baby giraffes. The zoo has previously hand-raised baby giraffes, so their needs are known, said veterinarian Lauren Howard, associate director of veterinary services at the Safari Park.

When ready, the calf will be placed with a giraffe herd. That may be back at the Safari Park near Escondido, the zoo’s San Diego location, or at another zoo, Howard said.

The as-yet-unnamed calf was born in the open field Jan. 27, in an apparently normal birth. Video indicates that an adult male may have inadvertently knocked the calf to the ground. Whether this fall damaged the calf is unknown, Howard said, but he eventually got the knack of standing and walking.

Zoo keepers soon noticed he was spending little time nursing, Howard said. And because the keepers spend the most time observing the giraffes, the veterinary staff took their concerns seriously and sprang into action. It’s an example of how keepers and vets work as a team.

“The keepers out in the field are highly skilled and have seen a lot of babies born,” Howard said. “So I actually rely on them to tell me what’s normal, like how often does a giraffe nurse, then, when he’s nursing — how long is that nursing bout?”

”We’ve gotten really good at capturing videos and photos and sharing that back and forth between the vets and the keepers. And when there’s a flag raised of any kind, then the veterinarians go out and look at the animal.”

So early Tuesday morning, when the veterinarians meet daily with keepers, they decided to give the calf a quick exam in the field. This was accomplished by briefly distracting the mother.

Results were normal, except for a slightly elevated white blood cell count.

After the exam, keepers reported that the calf was still behaving oddly. The mother, Acacia, appeared to be losing interest in her baby.

“He was doing this weird, head-toss, cough-sneeze thing,” Howard said.

Since sick newborn giraffes can go downhill quickly, the plan was to bring him in Wednesday morning to the Safari Park’s Paul Harter Veterinary Medical Center for a comprehensive exam.

However, on Tuesday evening, more bad news came in. Letting him stay out in the cold even one night seemed too risky.

“The supervisor got in touch with me to say they’ve been watching him all afternoon and haven’t seen him nurse,” Howard said. “He seems a bit more lethargic and lying down. We think we need to pull him tonight.”

So that evening, the calf was taken by trailer to the veterinary center for a more detailed exam. The mother didn’t appear to show too much concern about the removal, another sign she had lost interest, Howard said.

It’s easy to misinterpret animal actions through the lens of our human emotions, Howard said. But the general feeling among veterinarians is that when a mother stops being attentive to a baby, it’s because she senses something is wrong with it.

Images from a recently acquired CT scanner designed for horses revealed inflammation in the calf’s nose and throat, Howard said. The inflammation could have been caused by injury, or by an infection. Whatever the cause, it could account for the nursing problems.

The calf was given antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs and kept warm. He accepted bottle feedings with giraffe formula. But while his condition improved, the overnight stay broke the maternal bond, Howard said. Giraffe mothers don’t tolerate more than a brief separation from their babies.

So the calf has a human-centric future for the time being, Howard said. When he gets strong enough, he will be cautiously introduced to other giraffes, so he can eventually be placed back with others of his kind.

The diagnosis would have been impossible until recently; the zoo only obtained the CT scanner about a year and a half ago, Howard said. An ordinary X-ray wouldn’t have revealed the inflammation.

One-month-old Giraffe Calf, Born Septic, Receives Dedicated Nursing at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park

The future of Baridi, a giraffe calf, looks promising today, after animal care staff at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park labored day and night nursing him back to health. The newest member of the herd was born last month, to the joy of zoo employees and guests—but that joy turned to concern after Baridi was discovered to be extremely ill, with a severe infection that made it impossible for him to stand. Baridi was quickly admitted to the Paul Harter Veterinary Medical Center at the Safari Park, where he received IV fluids and around-the-clock specialized care until he was able to move around on his own. Animal care staff said the challenge of nursing Baridi was a fulfilling experience.

“Taking care of Baridi has been a very rewarding experience for all of us keepers,” said Lissa McCaffree, lead keeper in the Animal Care Center nursery at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “He’s been a pleasure to work with. He has a great personality, and we looked forward to feeding him every day.”

Nursery staff members said Baridi will soon be strong enough to join the herd’s other four young giraffes—Congo, Siri, Yamikani and Kafele—in the East Africa exhibit, where they are often seen together in a crèche, or nursery group. It is typical for young giraffes to stay together in a herd while their moms forage. The Safari Park’s giraffe breeding program has produced more than 164 giraffe calves since the Park opened in 1972.

Giraffes, sometimes called the watchtowers of the savanna, are disappearing, largely as they live: silently. In many African countries, giraffe populations are slowly decreasing because of poaching, habitat loss and overgrazing of resources by livestock. In the past 15 years, overall numbers have declined so much that two giraffe subspecies—the West African or Nigerian giraffe and the Rothschild’s giraffe—are now endangered.

San Diego Zoo Global has partnered with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, as well as other conservation organizations, to help conserve giraffes in East Africa. This year, a team of scientists from the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research has been developing a conservation project with Kenyan pastoralists, to find ways to collaborate and protect giraffes in the savanna, including creating a fenced sanctuary for the giraffes.

Bringing species back from the brink of extinction is the goal of San Diego Zoo Global. As a leader in conservation, the work of San Diego Zoo Global includes on-site wildlife conservation efforts (representing both plants and animals) at the San Diego Zoo, San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research, as well as international field programs on six continents. The work of these entities is inspiring children through the San Diego Zoo Kids network, reaching out through the Internet and in children’s hospitals nationwide. The work of San Diego Zoo Global is made possible by the San Diego Zoo Global Wildlife Conservancy and is supported in part by the Foundation of San Diego Zoo Global.

NEWS RELEASE

Second Endangered Przewalski’s Horse Foal Born as a Result of Cloning

Birth Offers Further Hope for Use of Cloning as a Viable Tool for Conservation

SAN DIEGO (April 19, 2023)   –  Scientists are elated with the recent birth of the world’s second successfully cloned Przewalski’s horse, supporting the concept that cloning can be used as a viable tool for genetic rescue and contribute to new options for fostering resilience and genetic sustainability of endangered species . The foal, born Feb. 17, 2023 to a domestic surrogate mare, is a clone of a male Przewalski’s horse stallion whose living cell line was cryopreserved over 40 years ago in the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance Biodiversity Bank’s Frozen Zoo ® .

The world’s first cloned Przewalski’s horse, Kurt, is the genetic twin of the new foal, as he was born in August 2020 from the same stallion’s living cell line . The birth of the second Przewalski’s horse clone, still to be named, and the 2020 birth of Kurt, are a result of a partnership between nonprofit Revive & Restore, the animal cloning company ViaGen Pets & Equine, and San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, to bring back genetic diversity to the endangered Przewalski’s horse species.

“The most transformative moments in conservation happen when the brightest minds collaborate and discover new possibilities for wildlife,” said Paul A. Baribault, president and chief executive officer, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. “Our work to rescue endangered species is possible because we’ve come together as an alliance of conservationists, whose goal is to help create a world where all life thrives. We are inspired by this incredible achievement and the impact it will have on Przewalski’s horses worldwide.”

Until the recent birth of this Przewalski’s horse foal, cloning had only successfully produced a single individual of any endangered species. This foal’s birth provides evidence that cloning is an increasingly viable means for species conservation and that the objectives of using cloning for population management can be more fully assured.

“This is a big deal for conservation,” said Ryan Phelan, co-founder and executive director of Revive & Restore. “Cloning as a tool for genetic rescue has been underutilized. Here, we have increasing evidence that cloning is a viable strategy to revive lost genetic diversity in endangered species.”

“Having two stallions of a genetically valuable line is a huge boost for the conservation of the species,” explained Ben Novak, lead scientist at Revive & Restore. “It means twice the potential to revive genetic diversity in this species.”

Formerly extinct in the wild, the Przewalski’s horse has survived for the past 40 years almost entirely in zoos around the world, and nearly all of the surviving horses are related to just 12 Przewalski’s horses born in native habitats. Ongoing reintroductions of Przewalski’s horses into their native habitats have established several herds in grasslands in China and Mongolia. To maintain genetic variation, however, scientists believe more work needs to be done to ensure the species’ future survival. Advanced reproductive technologies are relatively standard for domestic horses and cattle. However, there have been few attempts to work with endangered species.

“He has been a healthy, amazing foal from birth,” said Blake Russell, president of ViaGen Pets & Equine, describing the new Przewalski’s horse foal. “He was up and nursing within a few minutes, and only slows down for his regular naps. We are thrilled to be a part of this effort, and look forward to more milestones ahead.”

The new foal will eventually be moved from his birthplace at ViaGen Pets & Equine’s cloning facility in Texas to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Kurt was moved from ViaGen Pets & Equine’s facility to the Safari Park in March 2021.

Przewalski’s horses normally live in groups, where a youngster secures their place in the herd from their mother. Because the foal and Kurt were not born into a herd, San Diego Zoo Safari Park wildlife care experts are working to ensure that Kurt, and eventually the new foal, gain the unique behavioral language they will need to interact and thrive among the larger herd of Przewalski’s horses at the Safari Park. Kurt is currently l earning the language of being a wild horse from his companion, Holly, a young female of his own species. The plan is for Kurt and the new foal to become breeding stallions when they reach maturity at about 3 to 4 years of age.

“Over the more than 100-year history of human management of Przewalski’s horses and their extinction in the wild, there have been multiple genetic bottlenecks that have diminished the gene pool of the species, including in its reintroduction into the wild,” said Oliver Ryder, Ph.D., Kleberg Endowed Director of Conservation Genetics , San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. “It is an enormously hopeful, unprecedented step for the Frozen Zoo to have the capacity to restore genetic diversity and resiliency in the ongoing efforts to conserve the Przewalski’s horse.”

The Sausalito, California nonprofit was formed in 2012 with the idea that 21st century biotechnology can and should be used to enhance genetic diversity, build disease resistance, facilitate adaptation and more. San Diego Safari Park Discount Tickets Comparison Chart

Is it better to buy san diego safari park tickets at the gate or online.

Buying Safari Park tickets online is cheaper, faster, and safer. Safari Park encourages you to purchase your Safari Park tickets online and in advance. But it is not required.

Buying your passes on the internet costs less. If you purchase in advance through the San Diego Zoo Global website you’ll save $2. Get my promo code from local aRes Travel to save 10% off the $71 gate price.

Buying online reserves a spot for you and your group. This is especially important on busy weekends and holidays. You don’t want to drive 30 miles to Escondido from downtown San Diego only to be turned away because they’ve reached their guest headcount limit for the day.

You’ll also avoid the sales ticket window lines if you buy online. With a mobile ticket, you’ll go straight to the gate. Wouldn’t you rather get right to seeing exotic animals rather than being one of the herd waiting in line for a ticket?

NOTE: San Diego Zoo Global charges a $1 convenience fee for online purchases.

Online Ticket Discounts are Becoming Harder to Find

Due to increasing costs due to economic inflation, San Diego Safari Park has asked websites to stop publishing some of our best discounts. You can understand their position. They’re a non-profit and feeding the animals has got to come first. You’re not the only one hurting from the high price of energy and groceries.

Fortunately, my favorite authorized ticket source, aRes, has gone the extra mile for SanDiegoing readers and carved out the best possible deal for you under the circumstances. Click on the koala below for details.

  • FREE for toddlers and infants under 3 years old with a paid adult

Parking is not free at this attraction. It costs $20 per normal-sized passenger vehicle.  If you’re driving an RV the fee is $38. Call 619-718-3000 to see if they’ve restarted preferred parking.

A San Diego Safari Park ticket one-day pass includes:

  • Animal Exhibits
  • All Gardens

  • Cheetah Run
  • Frequent Flyers Bird Show
  • Tiger Keeper Talk

NOTE : Please call 619-718-3000 to find out which (if any) of these activities have been canceled due to county COVID-19 restrictions. Read this section on another page of my site which details what’s included in San Diego Zoo Safari Park tickets .

Also, visit my page on the best places to eat at Safari Park . In addition to details on all their restaurants, I’ve included tips on how to save a few bucks while eating well there.

When Are San Diego Zoo Safari Park Free Admission Days?

The best-discounted deal at San Diego Zoo is free entry, right? Here’s the scat on all of the free days at San Diego Zoo.

How Kids Free in October at the Safari Park Works

Kids get San Diego Zoo Safari Park tickets free in October. Children under the age of 12 can get in free. There are some limits:

  • They must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
  • Only 5 children are permitted per adult.

Your cheapest option is to buy a discounted adult ticket that allows you to bring in children for free.

Unfortunately your Southern California CityPASS , and Go San Diego passes are not eligible for special events like this. AAA discounts won’t work either because they cannot be combined with any other discount offers.

You’re going to have to purchase a separate adult ticket. But you don’t have to pay full price. Click HERE for a discount code that will work on adult tickets during Kids Free in October.

Discover more kid fun for less! Check out my page where I uncover all the  discount ticket deals at Sesame Place San Diego  for you.

Seniors Get in Free During February at San Diego Safari Park

1-Day Passes are free for everyone over 65 all of February. This deal is only available at the entrance. Present a valid photo ID with a birthdate showing that you’re over 65 at a Safari Park ticket window. Only one ticket per senior. You still have to pay for parking.

Which San Diego Zoo Annual Membership Is the Cheapest?

San Diego Zoo Annual Memberships include unlimited Safari Park entrance privileges. If you love animals and walking in beautiful surroundings this is one of the best ways to get cheap tickets for the San Diego Safari Park. You can save up to 99.6% off the standard 1-Day Pass price if you visit the zoo daily for a year with the Resident Adult Premium membership. The cost is 29 cents per daily visit.  But what if you don’t want to come every day?

If you want to visit often on weekends, buy the San Diego Resident Premium Adult membership ($109). If you plan to see the animals during the week, purchase the San Diego Resident Adult Membership ($95). This membership level has all weekends and major holidays blacked out, that’s 123 days. Yes, I counted them all on their blackout date calendar. You can find the current year’s blackout dates calendar in the membership sections  HERE .

You’ll find a chart with the least expensive San Diego Zoo membership options and their restrictions below:

Annual adult membership plans cost from $99 to $10,000 per year. Here’s the San Diego Zoo annual membership page so that you can check them all out for yourself.

Bob and I are  Wildlife Protector Premium  members. At this level, we get free parking and unlimited entries to both the Safari Park and the San Diego Zoo. We usually visit Safari Park on Saturdays. Our favorites are Tiger Trail , Elephant Valley, Africa Tram, and eating lunch while watching herds of antelope and rhinos from a bench above Kijamii Overlook. If it’s a special occasion, we’ll dine at The Watering Hole restaurant.

Free Guest Admission coupons are one of the major perks of most San Diego Zoo annual memberships. Each of these printed tickets is like a 1-Day Pass – good for a one-time visit for one person. Guests can use these without a member being present.

How to Get and Use Free Guest Passes for Safari Park

You can visit San Diego Safari Park for free if you’ve got Complimentary Guest Passes. But the only way to get them is if you know a member who is willing to give them to you.

You do NOT have to be with a member to enter the park using a San Diego Zoo Guest Pass.

Longtime members are more likely to have unused Guest Passes. Chances are that they’ve taken their visiting family and friends to the zoo and Safari Park many times. Members love sharing their passion for animals and they feel bad about letting their passes expire without being used. So asking them doesn’t cost you anything and may make them feel better.

Buying Guest Passes online is risky . San Diego Zoo Global says that the resale of guest coupons is fraud and a violation of the seller’s annual membership agreement. They’re just printed tickets with a barcode. Anyone with a scanner and a printer can fake them. And you will not know that you’ve paid for a fake until you try to present it at the gate. You may be turned away because the scanner says that code has been used.

How to Get 50% Off Discount Admission Coupons for Safari Park

This half-off San Diego Zoo Safari Park admission deal is legit. But they are also only available from someone who has an annual membership.

But these discounted tickets are MUCH easier to find than the free Guest Passes. Most of the annual membership options include 2 of these per year. Once again, ask the zoo members in your network if they have any unused coupons.

And just like the Guest Passes, buying these discount admission coupons online is not recommended.

Are Safari Park Shoppers Passes Worth It?

A Safari Park Shoppers’ Pass is another free way to enter the park. Actually, it’s a 1-Day Pass that will be refunded if you meet certain conditions.  Those conditions are:

  • You’ve purchased a 1-Day Pass at the standard rate
  • You’ve returned to the ticket sales window at the entrance within 45 minutes

Start back to the gate when you’ve shopped for 35 minutes because there may be people waiting in line at the ticket booth.

Are There Group Discounts at San Diego Zoo Safari Park?

You get 10% Off 1-Day Passes for groups of 15 or more paying visitors at Safari Park San Diego. This is a wonderful way for large families to get together while maintaining social distancing.  Of course it’s also ideal for businesses and social group outings.

15% off the 1-Day Pass for groups of 100 or more. Call 619-718-3000 (Reservation Sales Department) well in advance of your trip. They will make sure that your group numbers will be counted in that day’s total. Also, they have meal vouchers for many of the eateries inside Safari Park for an extra fee. This can save your group members some money off of buying entrees à la carte.

What is the San Diego Zoo Tickets Senior Discount?

You can get 15% off a 1-Day Pass for guests over 65 at the gate . You must present a valid photo ID at a zoo ticket sales window to get this discount. They do not offer this deal online or by phone.

Save More Than 10% With Authorized Ticket Seller Deals

San Diego Zoo Global (SDZG) works with a limited group of vendors who have the right to legally sell Safari Park tickets. They are tied into the Safari Park reservation system. They have to maintain strict standards of customer service and abide by the rules set by SDGZ.

These rules include maintaining their agreed-upon ticket parity so that the non-profit zoological organization can maintain its funding for conservation projects.

SanDiegoing Ticket Deals From aRes Travel

aRes Travel and San Diego Zoo Global have been partners since 1993. The Zoo and Safari Park online reservation system was developed and is being maintained and updated by aRes. All of the other authorized ticket sellers use that system to sell tickets according to SDZG’s standards.

Here’s why I recommend aRes:

  • Many thousands of San Diego visitors have saved money with their worry-free discounted Safari Park passes and tickets
  • 100% authentic tickets Guaranteed. All passes come directly from the Safari Park, Zoo, and other attractions like SeaWorld San Diego, LEGOLAND, Disneyland, and many attractions in southern California
  • They’re always cheaper than Safari Park gate prices (call for their unpublished rates at 800-719-8961 .)
  • Fast, automated delivery via email to your inbox
  • Never wait in line at a ticket sales booth. Go straight to the gate entry turnstiles.
  • Save up to 30% on tickets/lodging for multiple theme parks and 100’s of hotels
  • They’re a local San Diego company . They’ve got longtime relationships with hotel managers, attraction companies, and tour groups so they can put together great deals for us
  • Their CEO is a nice guy . I dropped by their office one day and he spent at least 40 minutes answering my questions. At the time, no one was reading my blog but me, my husband, and sometimes my Mom. It was a gracious gesture.

One thing to note is that aRes charges a $2 online convenience fee ($1 + the SDZG’s $1 online fee) for Safari Park tickets. But that doesn’t bother me too much.  Because… you can actually TALK to them if you need help by calling 800-719-8961 . How rare is that? Google them to check out their great online reviews.

Costco San Diego Safari Park Tickets

If you search the internet you’ll see many references to super-cheap San Diego Zoo and Safari Park tickets sold at Costco. There’s just one problem, all of those posts are old and the offers are expired.

I spent hours scouring online forums, coupon code sites and large travel websites and the most recent  example of a Costco zoo ticket deal is from 2010. And in that comment thread they didn’t even give the price for the 1-Day Pass.

I suspect that the killer Safari Park Costco deals will not be coming back. In the last couple of years San Diego Zoo Global, the Safari Park’s parent organization, has instituted a policy of price parity among authorized ticket sellers. SDZG doesn’t want other companies significantly undercutting their own gate prices.

They’re not just being greedy. It’s for a good cause. Their mission is to end extinction and promote conservation awareness worldwide. And they aren’t subsidized or run by their local city like many other zoos. The San Diego Zoo and Safari Park are mostly self-funded through ticket sales to people like you.

Go ahead and check Costco’s Ticket Savings page to see if they’ve got Safari Park passes. But if you don’t find any, don’t be surprised.

Costco San Diego Zoo Safari Park Ticket Bundles – There’s still a PDF for the Go San Diego Card discounts on the Costco website, but it’s an orphan. The Go San Diego Card is not on their ticket page, just links to a few restaurants. If you want to buy the Go San Diego Card click the link to go to aRes, our local San Diego authorized ticket source.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park Tickets On Groupon

Up to 70% off a 1-Day Adult Pass – This is misleading clickbait. Groupon’s last significant discount offer was in September 2020. If you go to their website you’ll get the standard 3% off deal that you’d get directly from Safari Park. Granted, 3% off is technically “up to 70% off”, but the wording is sneaky.

To get a better deal anytime, anywhere, buy your tickets from my travel partner aRes Travel of San Diego. Use this Safari Park Discount Ticket Form to get a discount code and the link where you can use it to buy your cheap tickets. Or, call 800-719-8961 and ask aRes for the unpublished San Diego Safari Park discount instead.

San Diego Safari Park AAA Discount

10% off a 1-Day Pass – You can only get this deal at the gate and if you’re a AAA member.  It’s good for you and 5 more in your group.

Present your AAA membership card and a valid ID at the ticket sales booth and purchase a 1-Day Pass for your ten percent discount. You cannot get this offer online or if you buy your ticket on the phone.

You can’t combine a AAA discount with any other coupons or offers. So you can’t use it during Kids Free in October or the Seniors Free in February events. But you CAN call 800-719-8961 ahead of time. Save yourself a bit of cash. Load the ticket onto your mobile device (or print it). Skip the ticket window line!

Active US firefighters with a valid ID can get a free 1-Day Pass for the San Diego Safari Park during September “Firefighters Appreciation Month” . Safari Park is located in the rural San Pasqual Valley and has sometimes been threatened by wildfires. So everyone who loves the animals here is VERY appreciative of the firefighters efforts to keep it safe.

To get free entry under this program you must present your active firefighter ID with a photo. It doesn’t matter if it’s a department ID or a Union ID. This complimentary ticket is not available by phone or online.

Firefighters’ Family Discount

10% off 1-Day Passes for Family & Friends of Firefighters.

During September, San Diego Safari Park offers 10% off each admission for up to 6 people accompanying an active duty US firefighter who has a valid department or union photo ID.

Do AZA Members Get a Discount at San Diego Safari Park?

There is no American Zoological Association (AZA) member discount at Safari Park . San Diego Zoo Global is a member of AZA, but unlike most zoos in the United States, it is self-funding and cannot afford to offer reciprocal AZA benefits and fulfill their primary mission which is to end extinction.

San Diego Zoo and Safari Park are both self-funded by your entry fees, food and concession sales, and extra add-on experiences like tour safaris. Most of the zoos in the AZA discount ticket program receive the majority of their budget from municipal coffers.

How to Avoid Safari Park Online Ticket Scams

Cartoon of hacker at desk selling fake San Diego Safari Park tickets

1) If the price for San Diego Safari Park tickets sounds too good to be true, you’re probably right. That’s the first rule to avoid being the victim of any online swindle. Pay attention to your little voice which says, “So what’s in it for them?” Sometimes it’s not just money, but your identity that’s at stake.

2) The Craigslist About Scams page says that most online fraud can be avoided if you insist on meeting face-to-face with the person selling the tickets.

3) Guard your identity online by using payment systems like Apple Pay, Google Wallet or Payoneer. If you are asked to make payment via PayPal, add on the Buyer Protection fee. It’s inexpensive, only 3.1% + $0.30 per transaction. Otherwise you are not shielded from having someone take off with your money without giving you a valid ticket in return.

Reselling of San Diego Safari Park Tickets is Prohibited

Photo of San Diego Safari Park Guest Pass with text prohibiting resale.

The sale or transfer of guest coupons, complimentary tickets, or unused memberships is a violation of the legal terms of the San Diego Zoo Global annual membership agreement. Words to that effect can be found on all Safari Park tickets.

Buying tickets from someone who is not an authorized ticket seller is a chancy proposition. Someone could have purchased a ticket online and printed more than one copy at home. There’s no way for you to tell if that ticket is good until it gets scanned at the gate.

I understand that sometimes vacations are canceled due to illness or emergencies. But it doesn’t happen very often. Keep in mind that there’s a good chance that an amazing deal on Safari Park passes is a scam.

Never purchase an unused membership to San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Annual pass holders must show a valid photo ID with their Zoo membership card at the gate. You’re out of luck unless your name is the same as the one on the card.

Don’t Buy Safari Park Tickets on Craigslist

Buying cheap San Diego Zoo Safari Park tickets on Craigslist is a gamble with the odds against you. None of the authorized ticket sellers list their inventory on Craigslist. And although you may find the occasional person who had to cancel a trip posting their unused tickets it is rare.

Before you put money down on cheap Safari Park tickets posted on Craigslist read Craigslist’s Avoiding Scams page . PLEASE.

Some people have had success if the Craigslist post says “pay after entry”. That usually means that the person selling the entry pass is a member who is selling their guest passes. The zoo member brings you in through the gate as their guest and you pay them the agreed amount after you’re inside.

This activity is prohibited by the members’ agreement with San Diego Zoo Global. Thus it’s morally questionable. It’s up to you whether you feel right about not doing the right thing to support endangered species.

eBay – That incredible Safari Park ticket deal on eBay could be real or could be a steal (with you being the victim). Before you try to purchase them, read the eBay  how to recognize scams section.

Reddit –  I’ve read about a few meetings for transfers of San Diego Zoo or Safari Park tickets arranged in these forums. The ones that were successful were of the “pay after entry” type.

Closing Thoughts on Buying San Diego Safari Park Discount Tickets

EVERYONE can save some money on admission to San Diego Safari Park. There’s no reason to pay the gate price. And I hope that I’ve proved that to you in this article. Between the SanDiegoing readers unpublished discount that you can get by calling 800-719-8961 and my discount tickets chart I’m hoping that you’ve found a San Diego Safari Park discount ticket deal that will work for you.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park welcomes okapi calf to the herd

The as-yet-unnamed calf will be able to be viewed by safari park visitors daily starting in april in the safari park's african woods area, by eric s. page • published april 8, 2024 • updated on april 9, 2024 at 4:25 pm.

The number of okapis at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park increased by one recently with the birth of a male calf of the unique species nicknamed the "forest giraffe," it was announced Monday.

The as-yet-unnamed calf, which was born on Feb. 18, will be able to be viewed by safari park visitors daily starting in April in the safari park's African Woods area.

The calf was the first born to Mahameli (“Meli,” mother) and Mpangi (Mm-pong-ee, father). Zookeepers say the young buck nurses several times a day and "likes to run circles around his mom and even playfully kick her once in a while," the safari park said in a news release sent out on Monday. "He also started taste-testing the [vegetation in his habitat], following Meli’s lead."

The safari park and zoo now share a total of eight okapi between them: There are four males (Nanoki, Mpangi, Upepo and the calf) and one female (Mahameli) up at the safari park, while the zoo has Zuri & Toby, both males, and a single female (Subira).

A reclusive species rarely seen in the wild, Okapi are native to central Africa and were discovered by Europeans in 1901. Although often confused with a zebra due to the black and white striped patterns on its front and hind legs, the okapi is actually the closest living relative to the giraffe.

Various causes, including habitat destructing and hunting, threaten the wild okapi in its native Central Africa, but, fortunately, "one-fifth of the okapi habitat within Africa’s Ituri Forest was designated as a wildlife reserve [in 1992,]" the news release also stated. "And since okapis are an 'umbrella species,' by aiding in their conservation, we also contribute to the protection of other wildlife that coexist in their African habitat."

250th California Condor Chick Hatches At San Diego Zoo Safari Park

S AN DIEGO, CA — The 250th California condor has hatched at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, marking a major milestone for the critically endangered species.

The chick's parents are Mexwe and Xol-Xol — the first California condor brought into human care under the California Condor Recovery Program in 1982.

More than 40 years since the California condor population dropped to a low of just 22 birds, this milestone is a significant success, according to officials with the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, a nonprofit conservation organization that operates the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park.

"Reaching this milestone feels incredible," said Nora Willis, senior wildlife care specialist for San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. "Seeing the success that the San Diego Zoo Safari Park has had — and the success of the California Condor Recovery Program as a whole — is really inspiring. There's still a long way to go, but being part of this and helping the species recover is life changing."

Before hatching, the egg was placed in an incubator to be closely monitored. Due to a suspected malposition, the egg was taken to Paul Harter Veterinary Medical Center at the Safari Park for imaging. After examining the results, the team determined the chick's position was not of concern. The chick successfully pipped and was returned to its parents for hatching.

The pair's nest was equipped with infrared cameras, allowing the team to monitor the hatching process. The chick, whose sex is not yet determined, hatched in the early morning hours of March 16 with help from its parents. It was named Emaay, pronounced "eh-my," a Kumeyaay word for "sky." Xol-Xol's name means "one of the sky people" in Chumash.

Xol-Xol, the chick's father, is one of the last 22 condors remaining in 1982. Xol-Xol was 3 months old when he was rescued from the Sespe Condor Sanctuary after being neglected by his parents, who were still rearing a chick from the previous year.

Xol-Xol, pronounced "hole-hole," made his home at the Safari Park as the first California condor brought into human care under the California Condor Recovery Program. Xol-Xol has fathered 41 chicks since 1993, and many of those chicks have been reintroduced into their native habitat, according to the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. Emaay is expected to join the native population in 2025.

In 1982, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance was given permission to begin the first zoological propagation program for California condors. Today, there are more than 560 living California condors, with over half free flying.
