Let's face it: When you’re about to embark on a six-plus-hour intercontinental flight and your body is buzzing with anxiety at the thought of potential delays, missed connections, and lost luggage, piecing together a stylish outfit is probably the least of your concerns. Factor in the near-impossible feat of sleeping upright on a plane and tolerating snoring seat mates, and it feels necessary to prioritize comfort on long-haul flights.

While matching sweatsuits are one (beloved) way to go, there are plenty of options in the way of loungewear these days. Pieces made of finely woven knits that feel as soft as a cloud, compression fabrics that prevent swelling, and buttery cashmere travel blankets that you can cocoon yourself in are among the ones we recommend for overnight or otherwise lengthy flights. But don't overlook the brand's tops: Pieces like this oversized cropped crew and the cotton half-zip shown below are made with soft, breathable fabrics that'll keep you feeling good from plane to car to hotel.

Huckberry serves up menswear basics made for the active traveler, including soft yoga joggers and water-resistant workwear-inspired pants that will take you from the plane to a bike ride or beachside stretch session with ease. I admit, the clothing is some of the softest I've ever worn, which certainly sets itself apart from more traditional activewear brands like Nike or Adidas. Try Vuori's joggers, shorts, and super-soft tees for an outfit that feels like pajamas, but looks respectable enough for the airport lounge .

Outdoor Voices

When warm weather is in the forecast, the exercise dress comes back out. Often designed with shorts underneath and a built-in bra, the practical, sweat-wicking one-pieces are a great multi-purpose vacation outfit: Wear one on the plane with a jean jacket layered on top, then break it out again for a pickleball game or afternoon walking around to see the sights. Cozy Earth's bamboo joggers received the media mogul's official seal of approval in 2020, by way of her Favorite Things list, and after trying them on ourselves, we understand why. The mix of premium viscose from bamboo, acrylic, and Spandex produces a super smooth, cool-to-the-touch fabric that'll make you feel like you're wrapped in your favorite set of sheets. The brand's Stretch-Knit Bamboo Lounge tee and Ultra-Soft Bamboo hoodie are among other bestsellers.

Any physician will tell you that sitting in the same position for long periods of time is bad for you: It limits blood circulation, causes swelling, and increases the risk for blood clots. Movement around the cabin helps keep your blood moving, as does wearing the right garments. Spun from the finest goat hair, Naadam’s 100 percent Mongolian cashmere basics are so ridiculously soft, it feels like a luxurious blanket that you can wear out in public—and on transcontinental flights. The built-in perks of cashmere include high breathability, and anti-wrinkle and odor-blocking benefits. The brand's tailored sweaters and hoodies will keep you comfy without looking unkempt.

Former Traveler editor Noah Kaufman calls Ibex's clothing “some of the nicest, most comfortable stuff I've ever put on.” Made of Ibex's signature Merino wool fabric, the clothes are built to curb odor, and the fabric is naturally thermoregulating—meaning you can wear pieces year-round—and smooth against skin (no itchiness here). If there's a brand that can get us to wear "real clothes" on a plane, it's Universal Standard. You can be as wonderfully stylish elsewhere and cute as you desire with makeup but when it comes to the legs, focus purely on comfort and nothing more.

2. T-shirts

T-shirts can be boring and formulaic but if you still want to look stylish, choose one with a brand, catchphrase, logo, or something with meaning to you. A t-shirt is one of those comfortable travel clothes that will always fit and certainly won’t look out of place in any travel outfit. A t-shirt’s also doesn’t mean any sort of dishevelled look. You can still look fashionable, emerging from your travel vehicle at the destination of your desires.

A scarf is something to hold onto for when you need it. Sometimes the climate or weather you expect isn’t what you receive. When you have to wait for something in the cold or get rid of a chill, a scarf retains heat and prevents it from escaping.

A big scarf is something to keep in a suitcase or packed in. It’s like having a stylish blanket for around your neck. It doesn’t look like it makes much of a difference yet when it comes time to throw it on, even if it’s slightly oversized, you will absolutely love the way it keeps the heat in.

4. Cardigan

A jacket or cardigan’s neutral and warm albeit can feel a little bulky. Being on the road in a jacket suits some, as long as you don’t have anything poking you in the side. With a cardigan, there’s options on how you can build your outfit around it.

If travelling is all about being able to sit in without discomfort, things like a cardigan can feel warm and provide some delight. Needless to say, if you’re traveling in winter in Canada or the northern United States, you better pack a cardigan or jacket!

Hoodies are one of the most comfortable travel clothes that you can wear. A hoodie will keep you warm and comfortable, no matter the weather. On top of that, a lot of custom hoodies have compartments or pockets to keep things in. A hoodie, even on a hot summer trip, is always something you want to have packed. It’ll keep you comfortable and protected against snow, rain, and cold.

6. Fitted pants

Fitted pants work better than sweatpants and appear more stylish albeit are more expensive. Fitted pants with some stretch are as comfortable as any pant can get without sacrificing an attractive appearance. Look for high quality stretch-denim in particular. If you’re heading somewhere you intend to potentially enjoy a jog, take up the trails, or hit the gym, these can also be an excellent pant to pack.

7. A ‘go bag’

A go bag has all your essentials. What’s most important to you goes into that bag. If luggage is lost or if your car breaks down and you need to hit the road on foot, your ‘go back’ is already packed and you can carry on without having completely spoiled your trip. Stay away from bags with studs or chains, or that are too heavy. Always travel light and easy.

8. Comfortable shoes

Do not make the mistake of choosing style over comfort on choice of footwear. This is exactly a situation where comfort matters way, way more than style. Your feet will ache if you choose otherwise. Find yourself a solid pair of shoes that are worn in and that, let’s say if your vehicle breaks down, you don’t mind walking to the gas station in. Not to jinx your travel but things do happen and if you’re not equipped with proper footwear, you could be stuck in the middle of nowhere without a whole lot to do.

9. Comfortable clothes in dark colours

Dark, neutral colours are a popular choice for comfortable travel clothes because they don’t show dirt or uncleanliness. They also allow you to blend in among crowds and doesn’t necessarily draw attention to you, at a time when you may look exhausted or be not so much in the mood to maintain politeness.

If you spill, rub up against something, or get dirty, black covers it all. Save brighter, happier colors for once you’ve arrived at your destination. Until then, or if you’re particularly worried about the appearance of dirt, stick with darker tones.

Probably the most versatile of all the pants we’ve reviewed, the Bluffworks Ponte pants can be worn in almost any situation. They are the closest to stretch pants – reminiscent of yoga pants, but thicker – and definitely the most comfortable to wear. As Bluffworks puts it, they are “Athleisure meets business casual”.

Pull them on like leggings – no zipper or clasp – and The material is a tightly woven double-knit fabric that’s soft and naturally wrinkle resistant – perfect for long flights. They also have anti-mocrobial properties so you can wear them more than once between washes – perfect for a long weekend getaway. You can wear them out walking around during the day and dress them up with a nice shirt – perhaps the  Bluffworks Azores blouse  – for a classy dinner date.

I’m a sucker for a good pair of jeans, and I’ve definitely found that at Mott & Bow . I actually have a few pairs of these jeans, both in the boyfriend fit, which is a modern slim fit with a mid-rise that’s not baggy like some boyfriend fit jeans are. Pair them with Mott & Bow t-shirts for the perfect pairing.

They are a nice medium weight demin that’s soft and flexible, so they don’t feel like they’re painted on and won’t allow for easy movement. They do have some elasticity to make them moveable, but they don’t get baggy with repeated wear, which is great because I often take only 2 pairs of pants for a 7-day trip.

I also really like that the sizing is really accurate. Unless you’re between sizes, you can definitely order your regular size and not worry about them fitting. Both pairs I own fit me exactly the same.

The jeans can be machine washed in cold water, inside out. You can tumble dry them or hang dry, which is what I do when I’m traveling. I do go quite a few wears between washes usually. They don’t need to be washed with every wear.

They come in mid-rise and high-rise skinny, slim boyfriend, and mom jeans. Colors are Dark Blue, Medium Dark Blue, and Medium Blue, Medium Light Blue, and Light Blue.

PrAna Womens Halle Pants

These pants are made with 97% Nylon and 3% Spandex. The four-way stretch design with reinforced knees makes them really comfortable to move around in, so they’re great for all types of travel situations. I find them to be fairly wrinkle-free and quick to dry.

There are two pockets in the back with flaps sealed with silver buttons, plus a secret hidden pocket on the top right leg, which you can see fairly well. The front closure consists of a zipper and two silver buttons.  Aside from being really durable, breathable and water resistant, the Halle travel pants also have a roll-up feature, so you can easily turn them into shorts. They come in three different lengths and it’s important to get the one that fits you right.

Aviator Women’s Travel Jeans

Aviator travel jeans and even better than wearing your most comfortable pair of leggings. They fit like skinny jeans, and have all the great features, like zippered and hidden pockets, but they feel like leggings. The features of these jeans are what led them to be called the “best travel jeans in the world” by USAToday.

They have six internal pockets – one pocket in the back is zippered for added protection, and one pocket is large enough to fit a cell phone. They are made from a material that is breathable and cool. I was recommended not to put them in the dryer to extend their life, but it’s not a problem because they dry very quickly.

Shape recovery is great – I’ve worn them for three full days in a row and haven’t had an issue with them stretching out. I own a few pairs. I have the Skinny in Dark Indigo and the Slim Straight in Jet Black.  I have to say my favorites are the Slim Straight. They fit well. The material is amazingly soft and luxurious. They are a dream to wear.

Women's Travel Skirt

One of my favorite skorts for traveling is from Jack Wolfskin. It comes in dark blue and dessert green. The waist is a comfortable elastic with drawstring. The inner short is a lightweight mesh that is silky.

The skirt is a light, soft textured fabric, with active moisture management and odor inhibiting properties. The material also has a UPF 40+ sun protection built in. If you’re a light packer, you can be confident that this skirt will suit many occasion and it doesn’t wrinkle easily. There are two regular pockets. This is the most comfortable skirt (skort) I own. I love the built-in shorts. 

Women's Travel Shirts

Mott & bow tees.

I’m a little bit addicted to these Mott & Bow t-shirts. They are super soft and very lightweight, plus just the right length. I can easily pack 5 of these shirts in a very small space, leaving room for other essentials like another pair of shoes. They come in a whole bunch of different colors, so you can really mix and match.

If you buy them in a 3-pack, you save about 10%, and in a 6-pack you save about 17%. Definitely worth it, especially since each pack has all different colors. They also come in short or long-sleeves.

Pair them with the Mott & Bow jeans featured above and you have a really great wardrobe for travel that’s simple to pack and really comfortable.

Unbound Merino Wool T-Shirt

I’ve really been loving this Unbound Merino wool t-shirt. The 100% Merino wool is what makes it unique from other t-shirts. The material is a little more robust and soft than cotton shirts and it has these amazing properties that help it wick away sweat and keep the shirt smelling fresh longer, so you don’t have to wash it as often. That’s great for light packers like me. I can wear it 3-4 times before washing it.

You can buy it in 6 different colors, from XS to XL. It pairs really well with their leggings , pants , and shorts . I would definitely recommend buying them in a bundle of 3 or 5 . It’s a good deal and you’re going to want more than one.

Threshold T-Shirt – Bluffworks

This is one of the best t-shirts I’ve worn in a long time. It’s perfect for travel because it’s moisture-wicking and odor-resistant, and it dries fast in case you need to wash it in the sink on a long trip. But where other travel t-shirts fail to look stylish and “non-technical”, this one excels.

The fit and cut are very flattering and it comes in great colors, like ice blue and dark crimson, as well as black, white and grey. There’s a V-neck and round-neck version . I love that the material is super soft.

I have the Ice Blue color, which matches well with just about everything. It’s a thick enough material to not be see-through.  I also think it’s the perfect length, with ample stretch.

Bluffworks also has a long-sleeved t-shirt with a similar style and the same soft fabric.

Azores Blouse – Bluffworks

Whenever a piece of clothing can do double duty, I’m happy. The Azores blouse from Bluffworks is perfect for travel because of its wrinkle resisting, odor controlling fabric that’s both breathable and lightweight.

But it looks like a nice silk blouse you’d wear to the office. You can easily wear this shirt on a hike or to a nice restaurant for dinner. There are three features to this shirt that I think makes it stand out from similar shirts.

• The material has a good amount of stretch, so it feels so much more comfortable than a silk blouse.
• The cuffs also have a lot of stretch, so you can pull up the sleeves and they’ll stay put, rather than constantly falling down.
• There’s a tiny hidden snap at the top to keep the shirt from gaping open at the chest.

The shirt comes in three colors currently – white sand, pale rose and inky navy. I have the pale rose color, which is actually a very nice light shade of pink. It’s so easy to dress up and down to suit the occasion and it’s so lightweight that it takes up nearly no space in my travel backpack . Another clear win for women’s travel clothing.

Womens Travel Dresses

Scottevest daisy dress.

I love this Daisy Dress . It’s got more pockets than you’ll know what to do with. It comes in three colors: black, navy, and plum. I have the navy. I love it so much because it’s stylish, comfortable and functional, which is a lot to ask of a travel dress. I haven’t found another that I like as much as this one.

I can wear it for all occasions – just casually while walking around during the day, or dressed up for dinner, or to a show or play. It’s an all-around great dress. Like I mentioned earlier it has 8 pockets, some with zippers (like the one in the back), where I can stash a few things to keep my hands free.

The material is super soft and breathable, with 65% bamboo to help regulate body temperature to keeping you cool and comfortable. I’ve found that it doesn’t wrinkle easily and it’s really easy to care for.

Other items I really like from SCOTTeVEST are the Fireside Fleece Vest and the Suzie QZip Sport – a high performance fabric pullover.

Aries Wrap Dress – Bluffworks

The Aries Wrap Dress is so lightweight and airy, it’s perfect for a nice spring or summer day walking around the city, going wine tasting , or visiting the farmer’s market. It’s such a nice fit, with the wrap covering side to side and the belt able to be tied in the front or back.

Here’s a really cool perk of this dress for travelers – there’s a hidden credit card pocket in the neckline and another in the waist that’s actually big enough to hold your phone!

As Bluffworks suggests, it pairs equally well with a jean jacket and sneakers or a blazer and heels, so you can wear it whenever, where ever. I love that kind of versatility for travel dresses.

Mountain Warehouse Santorini Wrap Dress

One of the most important things to look at in a travel dress is the material. For it to be really versatile, it needs to be a breathable, flexible material that preferably has wicking properties. This Mountain Warehouse Santorini Wrap Dress delivers on material, plus it’s eco-friendly.

It combines the comfort of cotton with moisture properties and a quick drying fabric, too. Another thing I like about this dress is the UV protection. It’s proven to protect up to UPF 50.

The fit is nice and comfortable, and it looks great for any occasion – whether you’re just walking around the city or going out to dinner. You can dress it up with a scarf and heels, or keep it casual with sandals.

The dress comes in 4 different colors with patterns in sizes 6-28. I have this wrap dress and one of their Orchid Patterned dresses and I take them on every trip I go on. They’re lightweight and easy to pack. 

Aviator Chambray Dress

I don’t often wear jean dresses, but I wanted to try this Aviator Chambray dress because it looked really comfortable. I wasn’t wrong. It’s a great cut that fits really well and is pretty comfortable, even with the sleeves rolled up.

It’s a little more bulky than I usually will pack for a trip, but it can do double duty as a jacket over pants, or a beach cover up. It has two side seam pockets with zippers, a tie belt, and a breast pocket for convenience. I’d recommend ordering your regular size. Aviator also recommends you could order size smaller if you like a more fitted look.

Women's Travel Capris

Fly free women’s breeze cropped pant.

There are so many things to like about these cropped pants. They are super lightweight and breezy, so they can hold up to really hot sticky weather in Europe in the summer. They also have a 50+ UPF rating, which is a huge added bonus.

The quick-dry fabric is great for light packers who don’t mind doing some sink laundry. They don’t come out wrinkly and they’re dry overnight.

I also like the wide elastic waistband. It’s stretchy enough not to feel like it’s cutting into your circulation when you’re sitting for long periods of time on a flight and it has a drawstring, to tighten, if you want. They’re really quite comfortable and versatile – great for just walking around or even for hiking.

They come in a bunch of nice neutral colors too, so they can be paired easily. I would recommend sizing up, as I found the calf of my usual mediums were a bit tight.

Anytime Outdoor Capri Pants – Columbia

Columbia’s Anytime Outdoor line is great for travelers. I really like these capris, but I also really like their pants. The material is very soft and lightweight. It’s got a bit of stretch so it’s easy to move around, but they don’t lose their shape.

They are probably the most comfortable pair of capris I have. I would wear them every day if I could.

The drawstring isn’t really necessary as long as you get the right size, so I’ve removed it. It felt like it was always in the way. None of the pockets have zippers, but the back pocket does have a Velcro closure.

Another drawback is that the material does pill quickly once you start wearing them – mostly in the crotch. It doesn’t make them any less comfortable, but it would be nice if that wasn’t an issue.

Lightweight Travel Jacket

A vest has great functionality for fall and winter, when you’re not quite chilled enough for a full jacket, but you’re looking to keep your core warm. This Fireside Fleece Vest is a great investment as a travel jacket, because it’s got both form and function. There are no less than 15 strategically placed pockets in this vest.

I have the charcoal color which I feel goes with just about everything I own. I wear it over a long-sleeved shirt most of the time. It’s a bit heavy (with all those pockets!), but it’s well fitted and sleek, so no one’s going to notice that you have a bunch of stuff tucked away – keys, cell phone, wallet, chapstick, sunglasses, even a tablet! There’s a place for it all.

The vest is also very soft and warm. The fleece is quite cozy. It’s 100% polyester fleece and it’s machine washable.

Fly Free Bamboo Lightweight Hoodie II

This lightweight hoodie is great for cool nights. It’s a thin t-shirt material, so it’s not providing a lot of warmth, but just enough protection from a breeze on a cool summer night. It has a UPF 20+ rating so it’s great to cover up with in the sun. The crossover hood covers your neck well, and there are thumbholes in the sleeves.

I’ve paired this with Free Fly’s Cropped Pant. They are both very lightweight and breezy and perfect for a walk on the beach in the sun, or for wearing out on the water. It’ll keep you cool and covered.

It comes in 9 different colors (as of writing) and a large range of sizes. If you buy your usual size, you’ll likely find that it’s a bit loose, but it does shrink a little when washed. I don’t recommend tumble drying it.

Arc’teryx Atom Hoodie

The Arc’teryx Atom Hoodie is one of the best lightweight travel jackets I’ve owned. It really lives up to its name in that it’s super light and can easily be stuffed into a backpack while traveling. Just because it’s light doesn’t mean it’s not warm. It has a thin layer of internal insulation, topped with a super soft outer layer that is water resistant and protects against wind.

The hood is treated with a water repellent and it’s insulated, so you can trust it will hold up in all conditions. Really, it’s perfect for mild conditions where you just need a light layer to keep warm, but you don’t want to carry around a bulky fleece or jacket.

What to Wear on a Plane, According to a Flight Attendant

The best way to dress for a flight

Figuring out what to wear on a plane can be as challenging as deciding what to pack. In fact, what you're wearing is one of the first things flight attendants notice about you as you're boarding. So how can you be comfortable both on the plane and when you arrive at your destination, all without sacrificing style? We went right to the source—a flight attendant—to find out the best rules to follow when you fly , including things flight attendants wouldn't do on an airplane (like wearing stilettos).

"Remember, you are sitting in a piece of machinery with confined spaces, sharp objects and strangers," says Amy Caris, a flight attendant and the director of In-Flight at JSX, a "hop on" jet service. "Don't wear your best outfit, but wear something that is comfortable and can slightly stretch. Comfort can be stylish!"

Stretchy pants

Space is already at a premium on a plane, so you don't want to add anything that will make you feel even more confined. This is not the time for skintight jeans (although you may want to carry a jean jacket). "As a passenger, I always wear ponte knit pants, which offer stretch and are stylish," says Caris. "You can even find jeans that have stretch to them."

Breathable tops

When choosing what to wear on a plane, look for stylish tops made with natural fabrics, such as cotton, silk, wool or linen, which will allow air and moisture to pass through. Moisture-wicking man-made fabrics are an equally savvy option. "I avoid wearing synthetic polyester or rayon materials, as they retain body odor more quickly," says Caris. "I like breathable tops that are just loose enough to keep my shape but are comfortable for sitting."

Compression socks

Sitting for a long time can restrict blood flow and make your legs swell. Compression socks are designed to help combat leg and foot soreness as well as prevent deep-vein thrombosis (DVT), or blood clots in the legs. Thankfully, they are so much more fashionable than in the past. "Put them on before boarding," Caris suggests, "because it can be a challenge to get them on in a confined space."

Airplane dressing is all about layering. You never know if it's going to be too hot or too cold when deciding what to wear on a plane, so a light cardigan is always a great choice. Caris suggests wearing your layers to avoid filling your carry-on bag space.

Stretchy dresses

You don't have to trade in dresses for pants just because you're flying. "I don't recommend wearing skirts and dresses that are restrictive, but some knit dresses can be long, stretchy and easy to travel in," says Caris. The best ones will keep you covered and comfy.

Comfy shoes

Flight attendants agree that the best shoes to wear on a plane are flats, although Caris points out that if you do prefer to wear heels, block heels are the most stable. Closed-toe shoes are best to protect your feet, as Caris learned the hard way. "I've broken my own rule and worn sandals before," she admits. "As I was standing in the aisle waiting to get to my seat, the person in front of me backed up onto my foot and bent my nail back. Ouch. It was a good reminder as to why I should stick to my rules of flying!"

Wraps or shawls

A thick or lightweight cashmere or wool shawl not only adds flair to your outfit but does double-duty on the plane as a blanket, pillow or extra layer, without taking up too much space in your carry-on bag . Just remember not to cover your seat belt with the wrap. "This way, [flight attendants] won't need to wake you up if they're required to conduct a compliance check during the flight," says Caris.

Wrinkle-free business attire

If you're traveling for business, you can save time and reduce stress about what to wear on the plane by dressing in your work outfit before you get on the flight. "It's easy now to find business-looking yoga or stretchy pants and blazers for both men and women," says Caris. "If you have to head straight to the office or a meeting after your flight, it's not ideal to change in the lavatory or an airport bathroom stall. And it's one less thing to worry about, especially if the flight gets delayed."

Loose loungewear

If you're flying overnight, it's important to be able to get a few hours of sleep. But that doesn't mean you should put on the same pajamas you would wear at home. Opt for loungewear , which looks as appropriate in public as it does in bed. "A nice pair of modal cotton sweats or a harem pant is acceptable," says Caris. "Just make sure there are no holes in them!"

To get comfortable and fall asleep, you'll want to take off your shoes—but flight attendants warn against going to the lavatory without something on your feet. Although socks do provide a barrier between you and a dirty floor, they won't protect you from wet spots—and you don't want to spend hours with wet socks on your feet. A pair of slippers , preferably with a rubber sole, will do the trick and will come in handy in a hotel room, as well.

What not to wear on a plane

Knowing what not to wear on a plane can be as important as knowing what to wear. Here are the items flight attendants suggest you leave home or save to wear post-flight:

Jewelry or bulky accessories

Metal will slow you down at security—it's one of the things more likely to get you flagged by the TSA . Jewelry that can be hard to remove will also slow you down in the TSA line. Any jewelry shaped like a potential weapon also raises red flags and may be uncomfortable when you're trying to lean back and get some shut-eye. Be careful with earrings too; they can easily fall off and get lost while you're putting on or taking off headphones to watch a movie. "You don't want to wear hoops that can get caught and pull on your ear lobe," says Caris. Also avoid wearing your skyscraper heels on an airplane. The nails in high heels can trigger the TSA's metal detectors to go off, as can shoes that sport large metal adornments or studs.

Anything tight

Tight waistbands, skirts, blouses and shirts are all no-no's while traveling, for the simple reason that our bodies naturally swell when we fly. Restrictive clothing does not pair well with bloating, also common on airplanes. You want to be able to move comfortably, encouraging healthy blood circulation and avoiding deep vein thrombosis. Avoid cramping by doing exercises in your seat and taking a walk to the lavatory, whenever possible.

An uncomfortable bra

One of the top items to avoid wearing while flying is an uncomfortable bra. A bra that digs into your shoulders and chest will only become more constraining in the air.

Skimpy clothing

You know the drill: You're so excited about that beach vacation that you throw on a tank and lightweight shorts only to find yourself freezing in the air-conditioned plane cabin. Plus, Caris points out, you don't want your skin sticking to the seat when it's warm. Another concern with revealing outerwear: It can be offensive in certain countries and cultures. Also, in case of fire or evacuation, it's better to be completely covered.

With the rise of fragrance sensitivities, what you find intoxicating can be torture for others. The shared air can exacerbate the unpleasant exposure for people who are sensitive, possibly triggering allergies or asthma. Be respectful of passengers around you by saving the scent for after you deplane.

High heels, flip-flops and slides

Make sure you choose the right pair of shoes for flying. High heels can slow you down and even puncture the slide in case of an evacuation. Flip-flops and slides can fly off your feet in case of emergency; you'll also find they make life difficult if you have to sprint through the airport to make your flight.

Fabrics that are flammable

To be on the safe side, steer clear of extremely flammable synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon, especially to help avoid the plane crash fatalities that occur in post-crash fires. Those fabrics are not ideal travel companions anyway, because they don't allow air to circulate.

Bulky jackets

Avoid oversized coats when you fly. They're cumbersome and can make economy class feel claustrophobic. Plus, they're tough to squeeze into your carry-on or the overhead bin.

Your last-minute guide to Monday's total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , offering millions a rare opportunity to see afternoon skies temporarily darken as the moon blocks the face of the sun.

Tune into NBC News NOW as Lester Holt hosts a two-hour special at 2 p.m. ET Monday from Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The eclipse's path fortuitously cuts across Mexico, 15 U.S. states and a small part of eastern Canada. In all other states in the continental U.S., viewers will be treated to a partial solar eclipse, with the moon appearing to take a bite out of the sun and obscuring part of its light.

Here’s everything you need to know about the rare celestial event.

What is a solar eclipse?

Solar eclipses occur when the sun, moon and Earth align. The moon passes between Earth and sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light and casting a shadow on Earth.

A total solar eclipse is when the moon fully obscures the sun, whereas a partial solar eclipse means it blocks just a portion of the sun’s face.

Solar eclipses occur only with the new moon. Because the moon’s orbit around Earth is tilted, the three bodies don’t always line up in a way that creates an eclipse.

“Imagine if the moon’s orbit were in the plane of Earth’s orbit around the sun — if that were the case, then every new moon, you’d have a total solar eclipse and every full moon, you’d have a lunar eclipse,” Neil DeGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, told NBC News. “So, because things don’t always align, it lends to the rarity of the event and the specialness of the event.”

Where and when will the eclipse be visible?

This year’s eclipse will follow a slightly wider path over more populated areas of the continental U.S. than other total solar eclipses have in the recent past.

NASA estimates that 31.6 million people live within what’s known as the path of totality, where the total solar eclipse will be visible. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path, according to the agency.

The path travels through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Tiny parts of Michigan and Tennessee will also be able to witness totality if conditions are clear.

After the eclipse crosses into Canada, it will pass over southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

Those outside the path of totality can still take part in the astronomical event by viewing a partial solar eclipse — visible throughout all 48 states of the contiguous U.S. — or a NASA livestream.

The timing, including how long totality lasts, depends on the location, but some spots will see the moon fully cover the sun for up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds.

Below is a list of timings for some cities along the path of totality, as  provided by NASA . A number of other resources, including NationalEclipse.com  and  TimeandDate.com , can also help people plan.

• Dallas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:23 p.m. CT and totality at 1:40 p.m.
• Little Rock, Arkansas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:33 p.m. CT and totality at 1:51 p.m.
• Cleveland: Partial eclipse begins at 1:59 p.m. ET and totality at 3:13 p.m.
• Buffalo, New York: Partial eclipse begins at 2:04 p.m. ET and totality at 3:18 p.m.
• Lancaster, New Hampshire: Partial eclipse begins at 2:16 p.m. ET and totality at 3:27 p.m.

How to safely view a solar eclipse

It is never safe to gaze directly at the sun, even when it is partly or mostly covered by the moon. Special eclipse glasses or  pinhole projectors  are required to safely view solar eclipses and prevent eye damage. Failing to take the proper precautions can result in severe eye injury,  according to NASA .

Eclipse glasses are thousands of times darker than normal sunglasses and specially made to enable wearers to look at the sun during these kinds of celestial events.

Sky-watchers should also never view any part of the sun through binoculars, telescopes or camera lenses unless they have specific solar filters attached. Eclipse glasses should not be used with these devices, as they will not provide adequate protection.

However, during the few minutes of totality, when the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to look with the naked eye.

Beware of fake eclipse glasses. On legitimate pairs, the lenses should have a silver appearance on the front and be black on the inside. The manufacturer’s name and address should be clearly labeled, and they should not be torn or punctured. Check, as well, for the ISO logo and the code “IS 12312-2” printed on the inside.

If you don’t have eclipse glasses, you can make a homemade pinhole projector, which lets sunlight in through a small hole, focuses it and projects it onto a piece of paper, wall or other surface to create an image of the sun that is safe to look at. 

All you need is two pieces of white cardboard or plain white paper, aluminum foil and a pin or thumbtack. Cut a 1- to 2-inch square or rectangle out of the center of a piece of white paper or cardboard. Tape aluminum foil over that cut-out shape, then use a pin or thumbtack to poke a tiny hole in the foil.

During the eclipse, place a second piece of white paper or cardboard on the ground as a screen and hold the projector with the foil facing up and your back to the sun. Adjusting how far you hold the projector from the second piece of paper will alter the size of the image on the makeshift screen.

What to look for while viewing the total solar eclipse

For people along the path of totality, there are some fun milestones to keep track of as the total solar eclipse unfolds.

As the eclipse progresses and the sun gets thinner in the sky, it will start to get eerily dark, according to Tyson.

When the last beams of sunlight are about to become obscured, look out for the “diamond ring effect”: The sun’s atmosphere will appear as an illuminated halo, and the last light still visible will look like the diamond of a giant ring.

As the sunlight decreases even further, an effect known as Baily’s beads will be created by the moon’s rugged terrain. Tiny “beads” of light will be visible for only a few seconds around the dark moon, as the last bits of sunlight peer through the moon’s mountains and valleys.

When the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to remove eclipse glasses and look at the total solar eclipse with the naked eye.

Some lucky sky-watchers may even catch a glimpse of a comet .

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks — nicknamed the “ devil comet ” because an eruption last year left it with two distinct trails of gas and ice in the shape of devil horns — is currently visible from the Northern Hemisphere as it swings through the inner solar system.

The comet can be seen in the early evenings by gazing toward the west-northwest horizon. During the eclipse, when skies darken during totality, it may be possible to see the comet near Jupiter, but its visibility will depend on whether it’s in the middle of an outburst and thus brighter than normal.

Most likely, all eyes will be on the alignment of the moon and sun.

“Most people won’t even notice,” Tyson said. “But if you know to look, it’s there.”

When is the next solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse will be in 2026, but it will mostly pass over the Arctic Ocean, with some visibility in Greenland, Iceland, Portugal and northern Spain. In 2027, a total solar eclipse will be visible in Spain and a swath of northern Africa.

The next total solar eclipse visible from North America will be in 2033, but only over Alaska. Then in 2044, a total solar eclipse will cross Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, parts of Canada and Greenland.

The next total solar eclipse to cross the continental U.S. coast-to-coast in will occur in 2045. The path of totality for that eclipse will cut through California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.
