The 31 Best Gifts for Frequent Travelers

A selection of our favorite gifts for travelers, including Aesop travel cosmetics, a book on national parks, an eye mask, and more.

By Samantha Schoech and Dorie Chevlen

Give the globe-trotter in your life a gift that will appeal to their sense of worldly wonder. These items will make flights, long lines at customs, and hotel stays feel less arduous and more comfortable. You could also give your favorite traveler special mementos and experiences to celebrate past trips and anticipate future expeditions. Whatever type of traveler you’re shopping for, there should be something here to suit their wanderlust.

Luggage helper

A person pulling a suitcase on wheels that has the Cincha Travel Belt bag attached to the handle.

Cincha Travel Belt

This wide nylon strap has a sturdy buckle to keep your shoulder bag, backpack, or carry-on firmly attached to your roller bag, for smoother trips through the airport.

Buying Options

Anyone who travels has surely precariously perched their carry-on atop their rolling suitcase, only to have it topple, swivel, or lurch. Solve that annoyance with the Cincha Travel Belt , a useful (if unglamorous) offering. The concept is simple: This adjustable nylon strap cinches a smaller bag to the telescopic handles of a suitcase, thereby freeing up a hand, shoulder, or back. Yes, your traveling friend could use a bungee or even a rope for that purpose, but this item has a few touches that make it worth the upgrade: The sturdy metal buckle releases like butter, and a hidden elastic loop keeps the belt attached, even when it’s unclasped. Yes, this is a practical gift, but for the right traveler, it will be a real gem.

The Penkou Portable Neck Fan in front of a blue background.

Penkou Portable Neck Fan

This fan’s battery lasts all day, and several accidental drops haven’t killed it. Also, it fits comfortably around the neck without being heavy, loud, or excessively gusty.

You save $4 (13%)

This past summer, heat records broke across the globe, and many travelers reported they found it difficult to stay cool and comfortable on the go. New York City’s own heat wave prompted associate staff writer Thom Dunn to explore the world of wearable neck fans , including the Penkou Portable Neck Fan . And the Penkou model, with a ring of 72 air slots that softly blow air up toward the head (but not directly into the face), was his pick. It weighs only about half a pound, and due to its smooth plastic design, it’s barely noticeable against the neck and shoulders. There’s one large button on the front right, making it easy to cycle through the fan speeds. The rechargeable battery lasts up to 16 hours, and the fan is compact enough to slip into a carry-on.

Handy sanitizer

A person's hands refilling a bottle of Noshinku Hand Sanitizer with a Noshinku refill pouch.

Noshinku Hand Sanitizer

This flat, pocket-friendly hand sanitizer comes in sophisticated scents like vetiver, eucalyptus, and bergamot. And it’s refillable.

Traveling requires a lot of surface touching: airplanes, subways, taxis. If the pandemic taught us anything, it was that we should clean our hands as often as possible. The lovely-smelling Noshinku Hand Sanitizer is an FDA-compliant germ-killer that also contains stuff like jojoba, rosehip, argan oil, and aloe, to keep skin from drying out. Each canister is about the size of a credit card, though not quite as slim. So it can be slipped into a back pocket or a purse pocket. The best part is the canister is refillable , so your recipient can continue to use it for a long time.

Reading light

Our pick for best reading light overall, the Glocusent Bookmark Style Reading Light, shown clipped onto a book that is open to a page in the middle.

Glocusent Bookmark Style Reading Light

This chic, compact device offers five light settings, and the power indicator makes it easy to tell when to charge it.

Whether your favorite traveler is reading on a plane, train, or bed, or they’re just rifling through their suitcase, they will surely appreciate some extra light. The tiny Glocusent Bookmark Style Reading Light is our pick because it’s so lightweight and easy to carry. It twists and adjusts, so the light covers a full page, and it has simple buttons, for changing the brightness and temperature of the lighting. This lamp is so small it can clip to a paperback without weighing it down, and it fits in a pocket.

Trip planner

A spread of two pages about Alta Badia in Italy, taken from Lonely Planet’s Where to Go When travel book.

Lonely Planet’s Where to Go When

This visual travel guide suggests events and destinations for every month of the year. It’s as much an inspiration as it is a planner.

Graphically exuberant and endlessly inspiring, Lonely Planet’s Where to Go When is arranged by month, so travelers can figure out where to head on any given day. Miami’s Art Deco Weekend is in January. Consider Botswana’s Okavango floods (the best time for dugout canoe safaris) in June. This book further categorizes potential trips by budget, family-friendliness, and “expensive but worth it” (a July road trip along the Westfjords of Iceland, for example). Even if the recipient is more of an armchair traveler than a frequent globe-trotter, this book is sure to kick their wanderlust into full gear.

Luggage tracker

Apple AirTags next to each other.

Apple AirTag

AirTags leverage Apple’s huge network of devices to track down a lost suitcase, and they’re impressively accurate at pinpointing an item’s precise location.

Whether it was misrouted by the airline or left behind in a station waiting room, a lost suitcase can really dampen a trip. The Apple AirTag —our favorite Bluetooth tracker —does not work with non-Apple products. But if your beloved traveler owns an iPhone, AirTags are better than their competitors in just about every way—from ease of setup to location accuracy. They track belongings almost in real time. And if an airline does lose your favorite traveler’s suitcase, they will have an accurate map to point to when trying to locate it. Wirecutter staffers have also had success with slipping AirTags into the pockets of their restless kids.

Arrive refreshed

The Peace Out Puffy Eyes box next to the patches.

Peace Out Puffy Eyes

Each box contains six pairs of under-eye patches, which are infused with caffeine and hyaluronic acid to depuff tired, travel-weary eyes.

Nobody looks—or feels—as fresh as a daisy after a flight. But the Peace Out Puffy Eyes cooling under-eye patches—a longtime favorite of supervising editor Hannah Morrill—can help with both. Each box contains six pairs of crescent-shaped patches, made of a gelatinous (but not icky) biocellulose gel. The cooling effect is certainly pleasant enough. But the ingredients (caffeine, for a temporary tightening effect, and hydrators glycerin, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid) are what really do the trick for travel-worn eyes.

Safe drinking water

A person refilling a lifestraw water bottle with water from an outdoor faucet.

LifeStraw Go Series

This water bottle’s microfilter straw protects against all sorts of contaminants—from microplastics to E. coli. And it makes everyday tap water taste better.

To turn non-potable water into fresh, clean drinking water, staff writer Samantha Schoech swears by the LifeStraw Go Series water bottle (she recently sent her son off to Central America with one). Its replaceable filter removes 99.9% of contaminants and protects against common waterborne pathogens. This bottle is a little pricey, but it eliminates the need for single-use plastic bottles. And each filter cleans 1,000 gallons, which translates to roughly five years of daily use. (To learn a little more, see our article on the LifeStraw Max Water Filter .)

Plane entertainment

ultimate travel gifts

Nanoblock Birds Rosella Collection Series Building Kit

Flat bags packed with tiny building blocks keep bored hands and minds occupied on long treks. The resulting builds are about the size of a fist.

A person can only watch so many in-flight movies. On long hauls, we find these Nanoblock mini building sets to be just the ticket for restless hands and minds. They’re engaging but not mentally taxing, and the sets (ranging from about 100 to 200 pieces) are small enough to lay out on a tray table and later carry home in luggage. Finished pieces—from musical instruments to cats to pizzas—are only about 3 inches tall.

Power on the go

A Zendure SuperMini 20W.

Zendure SuperMini 20W

This is the smallest and lightest power bank we’ve tested. It has USB-C PD and USB-A ports, and it comes in several colors. It also has rounded edges, so it’s easy to slip into a pocket.

At some point, your constantly on-the-go pal will require some extra juice, and a portable charger will ensure they have it when they need it most. We like this power pack , which also happens to be the smallest model we tested. But there’s more to love than just its pocket size. The Zendure SuperMini 20W ’s USB-C Power Delivery (PD) port can charge most handheld devices (and recharge the power bank itself) at top speed, and the USB-A port can handle any older, non-USB-C devices. In other words, this thing is fast and versatile.

An unmissable luggage tag

An Ovener Silicone Luggage Tag.

Ovener Silicone Luggage Tag

This brightly colored silicone tag displays the owner’s name but keeps other personal information out of sight.

There are a few features that make the Ovener Silicone Luggage Tag superior to pricier models in our testing . For starters, due to its sturdy, silicone-and-metal cable construction, it can withstand crowded overhead bins and rough tarmac treatment. Then there’s the issue of privacy: Although the owner’s name is always fully visible, address details are revealed only after you unscrew and remove the metal cable. Also an upside: This tag comes in a range of eye-catching colors. So it can help someone spot an otherwise-nondescript suitcase on a fast-moving carousel.

Premier toiletry transport

A State Bags Bensen Dopp Kit in blue, green, and yellow color block.

State Bags Bensen Toiletry Kit

This bag includes a detachable pouch and other organizational options, so packing is easier for both long and short trips.

For all manner of travelers, the State Bags Bensen Toiletry Kit is the most versatile one we tested . If your traveling pal takes longer trips and often checks their luggage, this bag folds up to stash larger items, like full shampoo bottles or contact solution; the hook hangs smoothly from a towel bar, for easy access. Our favorite feature for light packers: a removable translucent plastic pouch that holds up to four 2.7-ounce travel bottles (ideal for carry-on security checks). Available in a dozen prints and patterns, the bag also looks great and feels like a fancy, will-last-a-lifetime gift at a relatively modest price.

Small servings

ultimate travel gifts

Cadence Capsules

These leakproof plastic travel containers hold half an ounce of solids, liquids, or capsules; magnetized sides keep them compact and easy to locate.

If your favorite excursionist wouldn’t dream of using hotel shampoo or missing a day of their skin-care regimen, a set of Cadence Capsules will serve as an anxiety-abating treat. (Less-particular travelers will appreciate our favorite simple toiletry bottles .) All six hexagonal cases are leakproof and magnetic on every side, and they can be filled with about a half-ounce of whatever the traveler’s heart desires—from serum and dry shampoo to omega-3 capsules and CBD gummies. The well inside each capsule has rounded corners, so the recipient can scrape out every last daub of their precious potions. Each vessel can be customized with a “tile” or label. But unless you know your recipient very well, we suggest giving a gift card , which will allow them to choose their own colors and tiles.

Organized packing

The Eagle Creek Pack-It Reveal Cube Set.

Eagle Creek Pack-It Reveal Cube Set

Simple and solidly constructed, these packing cubes maximize luggage space and keep everything organized.

Even for the most enthusiastic traveler, packing remains an uphill battle. The Eagle Creek Pack-It Reveal Cube Set (one of our favorites ) can make the task infinitely less arduous, and some of our testers found that this set made packing borderline pleasant. The three cubes are made of sturdy polyester, so they stay upright when empty, and the mesh windows let travelers easily scope the contents. With a clamshell design, these cubes fully open on three sides, so deeply stashed items are easily accessible. Another welcome note in the age of lost luggage: Pouches can help your favorite traveler compress stuff into a single carry-on.

Safety socks

Two pairs of Sockwell's Lifestyle Firm Compression Socks.

SockWell Men’s Lifestyle Firm Compression Socks

These compression socks offer the perfect combination of function and price. They are made of a merino wool blend, which is typical of more-expensive options.

ultimate travel gifts

SockWell Women’s Lifestyle Firm Compression Socks

For a true frequent flier, wearing a great pair of compression socks is both a safety and a comfort measure. Long flights can cause deep vein thrombosis and gravitational oedema (the technical term for swelling caused by sitting around too long); compression socks facilitate circulation and reduce the instances of both. SockWell Lifestyle Firm Compression Socks (available in both men’s and women’s sizes) are comfortably snug, and they’re made of a luxe, merino wool blend that hugs without constricting. The socks are cozy on a nippy flight, and they come in a handful of prints and colors that aren’t as institutional-looking as those of other compression socks we tried.

A hands-free journey

A person is standing outside, wearing the Dagne Dover Ace Fanny Pack in sage green.

Dagne Dover Ace Fanny Pack

This neoprene pack blends style and function, fitting everything from a large wallet to a makeup kit—with room to spare.

For those who like to explore new places but don’t want to carry a purse, a modern, cool fanny pack is just the right accessory. Of the 22 we tested, the Dagne Dover Ace Fanny Pack offers the best marriage of handsome looks (eight suave colors!) and plenty of storage space—it can readily hold a smartphone, a passport, a wallet, and hand sanitizer, and there are extra pockets for a transit card and some change. Wide straps make this bag comfortable to carry, and the neoprene material (think wetsuit) will keep gear dry if the weather shifts unexpectedly.

A cozy cardigan

A person wears the White + Warren Essential Cashmere Trapeze Cardigan in a blush color.

White+Warren Essential Cashmere Trapeze Cardigan

This simple, luxurious, and flattering open-front cardigan will add a layer of warmth and elegance to a trip abroad.

There is nothing worse than boarding a flight and realizing you miscalculated just how chilly airplane AC can be. One of our favorite cashmere sweaters , the White+Warren Essential Cashmere Trapeze Cardigan is a simple and luxurious piece that will keep a traveler cozy both in transit and once they’ve reached their destination. This sweater is lightweight but soft enough to nap in (it can double as a blanket, thanks to its drapey shape), and it looks polished when layered over a tee or under a jacket. Available in six muted tones, the cardigan has an airy construction, so it can fold down smaller than expected for easy packing.

Colorful little notebooks

The Pantone 10 Notebooks set, which is a box with 10 brightly colored notebooks in it.

Pantone 10 Notebooks

Each brightly colored, pocket-size notebook has 48 grid-dot pages.

May be out of stock

Not all travel journals need to be works of art, layered with watercolor and ink. The Pantone 10 Notebooks set includes 10 brightly colored, 4-by-5½-inch soft-cover notebooks that are perfect for jotting down ideas, an itinerary, or travel memories. Each notebook slips nicely into a tote or a pocket and has 48 grid-dot pages of decent-quality paper. Send your traveler out into the world with a couple of these and a good pen , and see what they return with.

Armchair travel to Japan

A family gathered around a table, playing Tokaido, the board game.

Set in Edo-era Japan, this game revels in the simple pleasures of traveling—in this case, from the city of Kyoto to Edo (what is now Tokyo).

Players journey along the Tokaido road with other travelers, stopping at hot springs, stores, temples, and inns (and collecting souvenirs and eating delicious meals as they go). The ultimate goal is to be the “best traveler,” or to have the richest experience by seeing, eating, or doing the most during your trip. The game itself is beautifully designed and simple to play; it’s not deeply competitive, though there is some strategy involved in attempting to win. The pleasure of playing Tokaido comes from relaxing and accepting the pace of the board, and letting the game reveal surprising discoveries—much like travel itself.

A window out into the world

A view into a window with flowers and a house. Words in the middle read: Open a new window somewhere in the world.

With each click in this free app, a view opens from a real window somewhere in the world, complete with sounds of birds, traffic, or blessed silence.

Sometimes the best gift is to remind someone that the world is both larger and more accessible than they realize. WindowSwap offers a strangely compelling experience, allowing someone to take a break to stare out a window in cities like Copenhagen, Prague, and Manila. Some of the window scenes are tranquil, others are not, but all suggest there’s an infinite number of new things to see, wherever you are. The app is free, but for $5 a month, your armchair traveler will be able to look out all of the windows ever uploaded, create unlimited bookmarks and playlists, and even access a back button so they can spend a little more time gazing out a favorite window.

Noise-cancelling bliss

A pair of Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700.

Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700

These over-ear headphones are traveler-friendly, thanks to their noise-cancellation feature and lightweight, comfortable design.

A traveler can’t turn down the volume of an airplane’s engine, but the right pair of noise-cancelling headphones can. Such headphones are designed to reduce low-pitched droning sounds—in other words, exactly the kind of noise encountered in an airplane. After reviewing travel gear for more than six years, we think the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 are the best to help travelers relax and block too-loud plane noise.

An eye mask and a travel pillow for catching z’s

A Travelrest Nest Ultimate Memory Foam Travel Pillow.

Nidra Deep Rest Eye Mask

This lightweight, contoured mask comfortably fits a wide variety of face shapes and blocks light well. It’s best when you’re sitting upright or sleeping on your back.

ultimate travel gifts

Travelrest Nest Ultimate Memory Foam Travel Pillow

This compressible pillow has tall, memory-foam walls, and it offers more support than any other pillow we tested.

It’s perhaps an indictment of air travel in general that many travel items are designed to mitigate the environment, whether it’s the noise, the light, or even the cramped seats of an airplane. The Nidra Deep Rest Eye Mask , a Wirecutter favorite , features contoured eyecups that rest around the eye sockets, instead of directly on the eyelids. By combining this mask with noise-cancelling headphones and a pillow, a traveler will be about as close to a sense of privacy as one can find on an airliner. For a headrest, we like the Travelrest Nest Ultimate Memory Foam Travel Pillow . It’s simple to wear, doesn’t interfere too much with headphones, and provides support even when the wearer is sitting upright.

Tiny white noise machine

A person's hand holding the Yogasleep Travel Mini Sound Machine.

Yogasleep Travel Mini Sound Machine

This sound machine is about as small as the palm of a hand and weighs less than 5 ounces. And it features a USB-rechargeable battery.

There’s no guarantee that your beloved traveler’s hotel or Airbnb will be as quiet as it promises to be. A small, portable sound machine may create enough white noise to drown out sleep-disturbing intrusions. The Yogasleep Travel Mini Sound Machine is from the same company that makes the classic Yogasleep Dohm , which we recommend . The Travel Mini has six sound options, including white noise, brown noise, and three nature-inspired sounds. It also acts as a gentle night-light, with three dimmable options. What’s better than the gift of a good night’s sleep?

A game about the birth (and death) of words

ultimate travel gifts

Those who enjoy language immersion (and disorientation) will appreciate this card game, which has players generate a unique dialect.

Part of the experience of traveling to another country is feeling lost in its language, and Dialect can help fill the gap. This game involves the birth (and eventual death) of a language and the culture that created it. At its heart, Dialect—which requires almost no setup but plenty of imagination—is as much a discussion of what language is and why it exists as it is a game. It’s also good for last-minute shoppers: Order the standard physical edition, and you’ll get a digital copy, too (online access is emailed immediately, so your loved one can start figuring out how the game is played).

Global foods sampler

ultimate travel gifts

Tapas for Two Gift Box

This gift box for two takes you on a Spanish food journey, including favorites such as jamón serrania and chorizo.

Our kitchen team is wild about the Despaña Tapas for Two Gift Box , which offers a seemingly bottomless assortment from a famed Spanish food importer. (The box is among the other great options in our favorite gift baskets guide .) Staffers were particularly smitten with the anchovy-stuffed olives, trio of Spanish cured pork, and delectable Cabo de Peñas tinned sardines. The cornucopia of savory treasures comes in a brown paper box tied with a red ribbon, and there’s an option to add a card. In short, this box offers all of the interesting stuff your favorite traveler would grab off the shelves from a small grocery store en España.

Travel posters with classic appeal

ultimate travel gifts

Anderson Design Group World Travel Posters

These archive-quality, vintage-inspired prints depict destinations worldwide, and they come in a variety of sizes.

Years ago, senior staff writer Kit Dillon’s father went to Cuba and saw a clay statuette of Fidel Castro for sale. Kit said that when the vendor told his father the price, he said, “Castro no vale tanto” (translation: Castro isn’t worth that much). That may seem risky for an American to say while traveling alone in Cuba, but the statuette is here now looking at Kit, so somebody appreciated the joke. Ever since, Kit said when he finds a small token of Cuba—like this art print —he sends it to his father to remind him to take the trip again one day, only this time with Kit. For its World Travel Poster series , the Anderson Design Group created nostalgic images that hearken back to another era of travel—and they make an excellent promissory note for a trip to come. The collection currently encompasses every country in Asia, Europe, Africa, and Central, South, and North America, and it will eventually include every country in the world. The prints come in six sizes, and the images are available on canvas or metal.

Watercolors and travel journaling for the DIYer

ultimate travel gifts

Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolor Paint Set

This 14-pan watercolor set renders plein air painting possible, thanks to a slide-out palette, a water dish, and a quality brush.

Any traveler who’s interested in creating their own travel journal needs the right materials. The Leuchtturm1917 Notebook features thick, ink-proof paper, which works very well with pen and pencil. And as long as the artist isn’t too heavy-handed, it can also accommodate some light watercolor washes without warping. Your loved one can brighten their works with the Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolor Paint Set . This small, travel-friendly set of high-quality watercolors comes with everything a painter needs to get started (except the paper).

Cutlery to go

The Hydro Flask Flatware Set, displayed next to a plat on a dinner table setting.

Hydro Flask Flatware Set

This three-piece stainless flatware set helps climate-conscious travelers avoid single-use plastics, and it comes with a Velcro carrying case.

Airport food has come a long way. What hasn’t progressed: the flimsy and environmentally deplorable single-use plastic utensils you have to eat it with. Portable cutlery will give your recipient a dignified way to dine on the go. Wirecutter editor Ria Misra recommends the sturdy stainless Hydro Flask Flatware Set , which comes with a full-size fork, a knife that’s strong enough to butter a muffin (but that won’t alarm the TSA), and a spoon that’s perfect for ladling soup. This set also comes with its own carrying case, so it won’t get lost (or separated) in the dark recesses of your carry-on.

A pretty passport cover

Two hands hold a bright green Tusk Siam Passport Cover.

Tusk Siam Passport Cover

This elegant goatskin passport cover comes in 11 zippy color combos, and it won’t fade or scuff, even after years of traveling.

A bright passport cover will make it easy for your traveling pal to quickly locate their passport in a bag at the airport (or at home, when it’s shoved in the back of a drawer). Supervising editor Hannah Morrill loves the Tusk Siam Passport Cover , which is made from supple goatskin leather and comes in nine cheery color combinations. (Some other versions we’ve tried have a translucent pouch; in theory, this sounds ideal for flashing the relevant page at customs, but in practice, the cover ends up smudgy and embedded with crumbs.) Hannah reports that even after years of use, the slim folio looks clean and crisp. Plus, there are two inner card slots, which are excellent for stashing any stray forms you’re asked to hang onto at the airport or on the plane.

We love finding gifts that are unusual, thoughtful, and well vetted. See even more gift ideas we recommend .

Travel + Leisure / Tyler Roeland

The calendar has officially flipped to November, marking not only a new month, but also the release of one of the most highly anticipated holiday gift guides of the year: Oprah’s Favorite Things 2023 . The ever-popular list is chock-full of Oprah Winfrey-approved gear from cozy travel apparel to supportive shoes, and this year’s selection is no exception. Just in time for your holiday shopping, the media maven has outlined a detailed collection of products that are guaranteed to appeal to everyone — including from popular brands like Spanx , Beats , and Telfar — and you can shop the entirety of the list at Amazon.

Broken into eight, easy-to-navigate categories, Winfrey’s list includes a thoughtful array of products which are sure to make shopping for holiday gifts easier than ever, even if you’re doing your browsing on a budget. So, to make things even more seamless, we’ve rounded up the 12 best travel essentials that made it onto Oprah’s Favorite Things list for 2023. Whether you’re searching for the perfect pair of wide-leg pants or a spacious underseat carry-on suitcase to hold your gear while you’re on-the-go, your search is over.

Take Off Luggage Personal Item

If you’ve been on the fence about snagging a new piece of luggage ahead ofl the holiday deals around the corner, take Oprah’s Favorite Things list as a sign that this personal item is exactly what you’ve been looking for. Winfrey notes that this suitcase is a “brilliant below-the-seat bag” seeing as you can pop off the wheels to transform it from a rolling carry-on to an underseat personal item easily. She even notes that it’s ideal for people “traveling on a budget” if you’re looking to avoid “putting luggage in the overhead bin.” And even better yet, it’s currently on sale for just $96.

Spanx AirEssentials 1/2 Zip

A cozy loungewear outfit is the only thing you’ll want to travel in during the colder months, and Oprah swears by this flattering Spanx zip-up (which even boasts a matching pair of pants ) as her go-to outfit. In fact, she raved that she “got this set last year,” and “wore it on a photo shoot for O Quarterly and never looked back.” Winfrey added that the top is made with the “most comfortable fabric,” and now even comes in “new, sophisticated colors.”

Beats Studio Pro Headphones

Over-ear headphones have made a major comeback in the last year — and even Oprah herself has taken notice. If you’re looking to skip the trial and error and snag the “best of the best” as touted by Winfrey , these comfy Studio Pro headphones are the best choice, whether you’re shopping for yourself or a loved one this season. In fact, now is the best time to shop as they’re on sale for a whopping 43 percent off at Amazon.

Telfar Medium Shopping Bag

If you’ve joined the impressive waitlist that Telfar bags have amassed this past year, you’ll be happy to find that the iconic shopping bag is now available at Amazon in a stunning purple shade, as approved by Oprah. Not only is it stylish enough to function as a tote during your travels, but Winfrey even notes that it’s “big enough to hold a laptop,” making it the ideal personal item for fashion-forward adventurers. In fact, Oprah went as far as to dub it the “It Bag” of the year — sold!

Tory Burch Classic Rain Loafers

It’s no small task to remain stylish during rainy days, and these sleek Tory Burch loafers are the perfect solution for taking on a vacation that may be riddled with inclement weather. Pair these simple rubber loafers with your favorite travel outfit and you’ve instantly created a fashionable and sensible travel look. Plus, according to Oprah they’re “just right for days of running errands,” and a convenient pull-on design is great for hurrying through the airport without dealing with laces.

Saysh The Felix Runner

While you can’t go wrong with pull-on shoes, sometimes it is paramount to have a reliable pair of lace-up sneakers at the ready while you’re on vacation, and Oprah has selected these Saysh women’s running shoes as her top choice this year — and they’re currently on sale for 20 percent off. Designed by Olympian Allyson Felix, “the most decorated track-and-field star ever,” according to Winfrey , these shoes boast a “super-plush insole” that will keep you comfortable and supported all day long.

32 Degrees Women’s Lightweight Shirt Jacket

Packable layers are must-haves for cold-weather travel, and Oprah has dubbed this shacket “just the thing for anyone who enjoys the great outdoors.” Not only can it function as a cozy top for staying warm during long-haul flights, but it’s also the perfect jacket for sightseeing, shopping, and really anything else you may have on the agenda before we hit full-on winter coat season. Better yet, it’s just $33 at Amazon.

Mali + Lili Lola Beauty Bag Duo

On the hunt for a versatile pouch to store your makeup and other essentials while you’re on the go? Well, Oprah notes that this “vegan leather set is ideal for travel,” as the “smaller pouch is perfect for makeup and a larger one for accessories.” But every good traveler knows that versatility is the name of the game, and Oprah shares that “savvy folks” cinch up the larger pouch, “transforming it into a going-out bag.” The duo is even available in 10 stunning colors, making it a thoughtful gift for your most stylish loved ones.

Lunya Organic Pima Wide-leg Pant

You should never have to sacrifice style for comfort and vice versa, which is exactly why these effortless cotton pants landed on Oprah’s favorites list this year: they offer the best of both worlds. In fact, Winfrey raved that “thanks to a full-skirt look, these loungy pants with pockets can be dressed way up.” It should come as no surprise that these pants are an excellent choice for travel as they can be styled in a variety of different ways, effectively limiting the number of items you’ll need to bring for your trip — and they’re now on sale for 20 percent off at Amazon.

Rebecca Allen The All Weather Boots

When the streets become slippery during the colder months thanks to snow and ice, the cozy flannel-lined All Weather boots keep you safe and secure, all while maintaining your personal style. Oprah admitted that she loves these boots “to go with jumpsuits, long skirts, [and] dresses,” but even added that they make excellent “gifts for friends.” A simple pull-on design makes these winter boots travel-friendly and great for airport wear, and they come in three sleek shades that are sure to match nearly anything you might have packed for your next vacation.

Sterling Forever The Perfect O-ccasion Earring Case

Tangled jewelry and missing earrings are about to become a thing of the past thanks to this simple Sterling Forever travel box that provides ample space for your necklaces, rings, and more while you’re jetsetting. Oprah even notes that “this isn’t so much a travel case as it is a treasure chest,” as the box comes stocked with “five earrings styles” that Winfrey herself selected for shoppers, alongside “room for your other essential pieces.”

Top It Off Sherry Gloves

Keeping your hands warm and insulated against the cold is key to your comfort while traveling during the winter, and these adorable gloves are the best way to do it without downgrading your outfit. Oprah calls them a “cheerful stocking stuffer,” while noting that the “index fingertip works for touchscreens,” which is endlessly functional when you don’t want to expose your skin to the elements in the name of sending a text or checking directions. And as an added bonus, they’re even on sale for just $20 right now.

Looking for the best gifts for travelers? Look no further! This curated list of unique travel gift ideas is all you’re going to need. Holiday shopping: complete.

85 Best Gifts for Travelers: Unique Travel Gift Ideas for 2024

As a gift-giver, shopping for gifts for travelers can feel like fun. But those of us on the receiving end of these traveling gifts know that some travel gift ideas are better than others.

Of course, that’s true of all gifts, but we travelers, in particular, need functionality and convenience above all else.

A lot of gift guides for travelers out there include some questionable items, but I’ve spent the past few years compiling and updating this guide to make it the most comprehensive list of travel gear and present ideas that people would actually want under their Christmas tree.

Every item in this guide is useful, practical, long-lasting and many even eco-friendly. If you’re out of travel gift ideas, you should be able to find exactly what you’re looking for here.

Here are the best travel gifts, suitable for anyone who loves to travel in your life.

Unique Travel Gifts

How do you shop for the traveler who has it all? These unique travel gifts really stand out; there’s something here for even the most high maintenance jet-setter.

Vessi Travel Shoes

Vessi Travel Shoes

First up: travel shoes ! When I shop for travel shoes, I look for something that is weatherproof and supportive without compromising on style. Normally these categories are mutually exclusive, but fortunately, Vessi has come in with these amazing kicks that are vegan, waterproof and super comfortable.

These light, sporty shoes come with different designs for city life, everyday and active wear, and they’re suitable for “peak to street” wear. Unlike other waterproof shoes, the Vessi travel shoes have a patented fabric weave that keeps them waterproof for life, which is perfect for impromptu storms or adventures.

Not convinced? Read my full Vessi Shoes review . I’m a long time fan.

GRAYL GEOPRESS Filtered Water Bottle

Grayl Geopress Purifier

One of my favorite places in the world to hike is the mountains of southern New Zealand. I also love being able to drink from the ice-cold streams that snake through the valleys and forests thanks to the  GRAYL GEOPRESS filtered water bottle .

Forget the iodine tablets and the extra water bottles, this filtered bottle gives you access to clean, natural water with every sip. It removes pathogens like viruses and bacteria, and it filters out everything from heavy metals to pesticides. This is a great gift for the traveler in your life who’s eco-conscious and don’t like getting sick on the trail. I think it’s safe to say: That is most of us. Packing a Grayl Geopress is one of my favorite travel tips.

Peak Design Travel Bag

Peak Design Travel Backpack

Every backpacker knows the airline luggage struggle. You need  a carry-on backpack  with the storage capacity of a suitcase, but a comfortable go-anywhere backpack carry design.

The only item you see everywhere, however, is the clickety-clack wheelie bags that would be hopeless on a hiking trail. Fear not,  the 45L Peak Design Travel Bag  is my favorite carry-on backpack to date.

Designed to be taken from the airplane cabin to the trail, this weatherproof wünderbag is the perfect present for anyone who needs to carry a new backpack.

It’s definitely not the cheapest option on this list—this is a  nice  gift—but I personally love it and I’m sure they will, too!

For more info on this travel bag, check out my full  Peak Design review .

Kindle Paperwhite

Kindle Paperwhite

Alright, I know what you’re thinking. You can’t possibly read from a screen because nothing will ever beat paper (except scissors).

Folks, I’ve been there. I am a voracious reader, but on my first trip, I realized that I had to do something about all the travel books I had accumulated because my back was killing me from lugging them around.

After moaning to a family member about this, they gifted me a Kindle Paperwhite…and I haven’t looked back. With its natural paper interface, it re nothing like a smartphone screen. If you love to read, a whole library of travel books can be made available in a device that weighs less than most paperbacks, plus it comes with a ton of accessories. This is one of my favorite gifts for the person who loves their literature.

Tile Pro Bluetooth Tracking Device

a hand holding a Tile Bluetooth Tracker next to a set of keys

Hands up if you’ve lost your keys, wallet or phone on holiday. We all know that sinking feeling of your things not being there when you need them, and not remembering where you left them. But thanks to  Tile , you can find your accessories quickly and easily via Bluetooth.

You simply attach a receiver to your valuables, then if you misplace it, you can make them ring via Bluetooth. These are also trackable online if you lose them out of Bluetooth range or if they are stolen. Keep track of those elusive keys and walkabout wallets, and thwart petty thievery. Pretty neat, huh?

REI Gift Card

REI Gift Card

Are you looking for gifts for travel friends but have no idea what they like? Give them a choice with a  REI Gift Card . Their online store stocks an amazing range of gifts for travelers from high-quality tents to yoga mats to wool accessories, so they are sure to find something they will like.

Take the guesswork out of shopping and let your friends pick out the products they want the most! You can’t go wrong with a gift card, and it’s easy enough to add to your shopping list.

JBL Flip 6 Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker

JBL Flip 4 Waterproof Bluetooth Speakers

In my opinion, one of the all-time best gifts for travel is a Bluetooth speaker—or as I refer to them, Instant Party Machines. If you’re out on the beach and need some fun beats to get the mood going, you can connect your phone and get a soundtrack going. The sound quality is surprisingly good!

If your playlist runs out of steam, there’s no AUX cord to worry about, just connect someone else’s phone and you’re back on. Plus,  this particular speaker from JBL  comes in a bunch of colors and is sturdy and water-resistant so it can handle a drink being spilled on it.

I’ve traveled with the JBL Flip in nearly every country I’ve visited from Colombia to Laos, so join the party.

Rosetta Stone

Rosetta Stone

Just to be clear, I’m not telling you to buy the Egyptian artifact held at the British Museum (though if you get the chance, you should definitely see it).

Rather,  Rosetta Stone  is a language learning tool that is easy for everyone to use.

No, it’s not a piece of tangible travel gear, but it will be something that your loved one will appreciate on his/her next adventure.

This is a perfect travel product idea because it teaches everyday foreign language skills that you can use quickly and easily, instead of getting bogged down in excessive vocabulary and grammar.

With a wide range of language options, Rosetta Stone is a great way to prepare yourself for a new country and make yourself some new friends. That’s why it’s one of the coolest gifts—it’s the kind that keeps on giving.

Coalatree Kachula Blanket

navy kachula

From camping trips to music festivals, the Coalatree Kachula Blanket is a must-have for the holiday season. But, this multi-functional product is more than just a water-resistant blanket for picnics. Not only can it be used as a light sleeping bag, but it can also transform into a hooded poncho or travel pillow.

And if you want to share with others, the module system can snap together with another blanket set to make one giant, super-blanket! It’s one of the coolest accessories you can have for traveling.

Considered the swiss-army knife of blankets, I absolutely love the Kachula Blanket for its versatility.

Peak Design Tech Pouch

This is a personal favorite. As a person who hoards charging cables, stationery, SD Cards and other tech bits because “you never know…” It’s amazing to have somewhere organized to carry them all.

This handy little pouch  is basically a toiletry bag for electronics. It holds all your electronics in a maximum-storage/minimum-space design that will fit perfectly in your luggage.

This easily makes it ideal for travelers trying to save space. Plus, if you go to the Peak Design store and order this Tech Pouch with the backpack from earlier, you save 10 percent.

Jaybird X4 Wireless Headphones

Jaybird X3 Bluetooth Headphones

Meet the next generation of headphones designed for active listeners.  The Jaybird X4 ‘s are custom designed to stay on while you exercise so you never again have to scrabble in the bush on a trail trying to find your other earpiece.

Matched with a high-quality sound production system for a flawless listening experience and an eight-hour battery life, this tops our list of best gifts for travelers who like to stay active on the road—or just listen to tunes while hustling through the airport. Wireless headphones might be all the rage, but these are just as comfortable.

Anker PowerCore Portable Battery Bank

Anker PowerCore Portable Battery Bank

Finding outlets in an airport can be notoriously difficult. Sometimes looking for a place to plug in my phone can feel like going for a treasure hunt. And then when I find one it’s either broken, or there are seven people waiting in line to get a charge.

Give the gift of convenience with this Anker PowerCore battery bank. If you’re getting a gift for a frequent traveler, they’ll love the ability to top off their phone battery without hunting around the airport. It’s compact, lightweight, and actually offers pretty impressive charging capacity for its size.

It will also give them some great peace of mind knowing that they will never get stranded with a dead phone when they need it.

Deckers Lab X-Scape Shoes

Deckers X Lab X-Scape Shoes

Deckers Lab X-Scape Shoes  are the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn. They’ve been dubbed the home workout sneaker of the year, with excellent midsole cushioning for extra support. They also regulate foot temperature.

Whether you’re doing sumo squats or shuffling around the apartment making coffee, these shoes just work. There’s lots of styles and colors to choose from as well, including for both men and women.

Stigma Hemp

Stigma Hemp

Travel is exciting, but it can also be nerve-wracking. If you know a traveler who gets extremely anxious before boarding a flight, or even embarking on a solo trip, CBD oil (like the organic offerings from Stigma Hemp ) can be a huge help. Its calming properties help reduce anxiety and fear, and it’s one of the things I most recommend for dealing with travel anxiety in particular.

It also comes in a number of forms, from organic oil to gel capsules to chewable gummies.

Just a note: Do your research before traveling with CBD oil. Although it’s legal in the United States, that doesn’t mean it’s legal everywhere.

It pulls your travel photos together with a stylish, classic look. Its high-quality craftsmanship will furthermore hold your treasured memories safely without falling apart. For frequent travelers, it’s a must. Sometimes the best gifts for travelers are the ones that make memorable keepsakes.

“Keep Calm and Travel On” T-Shirt

Keep Calm and Travel On T-Shirt

We’ve all been there: Plans have gone out the window, it’s pouring with rain, you can’t find where you’re supposed to be going and you’re starting to panic. In times like these, it’s always good to have a reminder that it’s all going to be OK.

That’s just where  this perfect shirt  comes in: Look in the mirror, look at the shirt and remember to keep your chin up. After all, what could be better than traveling?

The Silken Pure sleep mask also promotes healthy, wrinkle-free skin thanks to the material’s anti-aging and anti-sleep wrinkle properties. The masks are designed to help you fall asleep and stay asleep, and you’ll wake up looking as good as you feel. If you know someone that has trouble sleeping on flights, this gift is a godsend.

The masks also come in a variety of colors, including blue, pink, gold, and black.

Nabee Compression Socks

Nabee Compression Socks

Compression socks are specially designed to apply pressure to your lower legs, thus improving blood flow and reducing swelling. For some people, this is vital for air travel, where the risk of blood clotting is higher.

Nabee’s compression socks are considered the world’s best, and they’re made to last for years. Their non-binding, non-slip design keeps the sock firmly in place, and the extra Achilles heel padding prevents Achilles heel irritation. There’s also extra arch support, and the fabric is super breathable.

Nabee’s compression socks also come in tons of different funky patterns and colors to keep things interesting. Stripes, polka dots, hearts, and bright colors are just some of the options!

Speakeasy Hidden Pocket Travel Scarf

Speakeasy Hidden Pocket Travel Scarf

Here’s a gift for frequent travelers: a stylish scarf with a secret, hidden pocket to store any valuables, such as passports, money, or credit cards. All the scarves are handmade in the United States, and they come with self-locking zippers to keep belongings tightly sealed inside.

The Speakeasy Hidden Pocket Travel Scarf is ideal for anyone who loves to travel hands-free, especially to festivals and sporting events. Certain designs are limited and sell out quickly, but there are lots of patterns and colors to choose from (including lighter scarves for warm temperatures).

Pro tip: the pockets are big enough to conceal an entire flask. Just sayin’.

Ouai Anti Frizz Hair Sheets

OUAI Anti-Frizz Hair Sheets

These handy little Ouai Anti Frizz Hair Sheets are easy to use: all you have to do is swipe the sheet from root to ends to tame static and wild frizz. It’s good for most hair types, including straight, wavy, curly, and coiled.

The sheets are small enough to stick in a purse or small bag, making them the ultimate travel hack for freshening up while on the road. They leave hair shiny and smooth, making for a quick fix after a long flight or a busy day of travel. They also come with a slight fragrance of Rue St. Honoré—a French-inspired scent with violet and gardenia.

Serene House Travel Size Essential Oil Diffuser

Serene House

The Serene House Travel Size Essential Oil Diffuser is aromatherapy that your loved one can take with them while at their travel home away from home! Whether it’s travel for business or pleasure, having this diffuser promotes peace and relaxation, making any apartment or hotel room feel much comfier. And it’s tiny enough to fit in a small bag.

You can also make a purchase with some SERENE HOUSE 100% Natural Essential Oil—just a few drops help promote well-being and self-care. They come in a number of scents, including eucalyptus and lemongrass.

Cirrus No. 2 Travel Steamer

steamery-cirrus-2

For the business traveler (or appearance-conscientious traveler), the Cirrus No. 2 Travel Steamer is a must. This lightweight steamer is a gentle and effective way to keep clothes wrinkle-free and fresh in between washes. It’s incredibly easy to use, and it’s incredibly compact. It fits in any luggage and doesn’t take up much space.

This steamer also works on most fabrics, including delicate cashmere garments and silk. The steam is a lot gentler on clothes than a typical iron, and it won’t burn or crush delicate fabrics. It also has a minimalistic style and comes in three different colors.

Mejuri Travel Jewelry Case

Mejuri Travel Case

The Mejuri Travel Case is small but mighty; you’ll be amazed by how much this jewelry case can carry! It’s ideal for carry-on travel, and is about the size of a wallet, but it has a section to hold rings and earrings (with six earring holes) as well as hooks for hanging necklaces. This keeps all valuables separate without worrying about things getting tangled.

This is a popular item and it sells out a LOT. Its exterior is made up of handcrafted leather, and its lining is made of suede. The design is sleek and stylish, and since it’s portable, your loved one can keep their valuable jewelry close to them at all times.

Gifts for Travel Photography

It’s true that photographers can never have too much gear. These gifts for travel photography will make your loved one very, very happy! For more ideas, check out The Best Travel Photography Equipment.

GoPro HERO 9 Black (with Shorty Add-On)

GoPro Hero 9

Everyone needs a way to show the world the crazy stuff they’ve been up to. With the  GoPro HERO 9 , you can capture it all with a high-resolution, waterproof camera that will survive the toughest adventures. Also, the photo and video quality is fantastic for the GoPro 9’s compact size.

Plus, with the new Shorty accessory set, you can add a handy handle that can turn into a mini tripod for that perfect photo. The best gifts for travelers are the kinds that capture every moment.

WANDRD Duo Daypack

WANDRD Duo Daypack

Made specifically for photographers on the go, the sleek WANDRD Duo Daypack is an innovative bag to hold all your photography gear and equipment. It’s one of my favorite gifts for travelers who love taking photos on their trips.

Fishing for small items floating around your bag is not just a hassle – it’s annoying. But this module backpack unfolds so you can have full access to whatever you’re looking for, whenever you need it.

In fact, every item has its own pouch, compartment, and organizer. The pop-up camera cube protects your camera body while the padded expansion pockets can easily fit up to four lenses. There’s also a padded laptop sleeve, tripod compartment, and hidden passport and cash zippers.

If you’re looking for something a little larger, the WANDRD PRVKE is a great choice, too.

Boundary Supply X-Pac Prima System

Boundary Supply X-Pac Prima System

The Boundary Supply X-Pac Prima Backpack  is one of the most versatile camera bag sets out there. It comes with the Verge Case and Fieldspace to provide unbeatable organization, and its adaptable modular features provide extra storage.

You can attach and remove various components for the ultimate organization! This bag is definitely too heavy-duty for photographers just starting out, but if you travel with lots of equipment, this one comes highly recommended. Check out my full Boundary Supply Prima System review .

Moment Smartphone Lenses

moment lenses for your smartphone

Take your travel photography to the next level with these  mountable lenses from Moment  for your smartphone. Compatible with almost any device, you can get a single photo lens for enhanced mobile travel photography, or a whole kit of different sizes if you want to get serious about your travel photos.

These lenses will enhance the quality of your photo without the expense of purchasing an expensive camera.

This is the best gift for travelers who want to capture a special memory without having to haul around a chunky DSLR camera.

BZE Bluetooth Selfie Stick

BZE Bluetooth Selfie Stick

It’s a fact: handheld selfies make your face look weird. Get yourself a better photo with a selfie stick. The distance will put your face in better proportion, plus it gives you more space to get your friends into the shot.

Our best recommendation is this extendable model that can also be used as a tripod. Take it from me, the one time I wish I had a selfie stick was in Vietnam: wearing a triangular Non La hat makes it very hard to take a photo. The best travel gifts are ones you can share with friends, after all.

KUVRD Universal Lens Cap

KUVRD Universal Lens Cap

Any photographer knows that an expensive camera lens should be protected at all costs. Well, with the KUVRD Universal Lens Cap , you won’t ever have to worry about losing your lens cap again.

Made from stretchy rubber, it creates an air-tight seal to protect your camera lens from dust, sand, and dirt. That means no more smudges or scratches on each photo! And because it fits most DSLR and camera lenses, it’s the only camera lens cap you’ll ever need.

Matador Camera Base Layer

Matador Camera Base Layer

For the photographer in your life, the Matador Camera Base Layer is a super lightweight solution for protecting mirrorless and DSLR cameras from all the elements, without all the bulk of a standard camera bag.

This Camera Base Layer comes with a roll-top design so that it’ll fit all camera shapes and sizes. It can also be used with a neck strap, or clipped to a belt or backpack—but it’s easy to detach quickly in case the perfect shot comes up. There’s also a rainfly to keep everything dry, and extra padding to prevent any bumps and bruises.

Peak Design Travel Tripod

Peak Design Travel Tripod

Photographers know that dragging around a traditional tripod on their travels is just impractical and a waste of space. That’s why Peak Design spent four years designing the perfect travel tripod for any trip. No more bulk or extra weight!

Height and stability doesn’t get compromised with this tripod either. The Peak Design Travel Tripod sacrifices nothing and still packs down into the size of a water bottle. It’s easy to set up and pack away, and it’s covered under Peak Design’s incredible lifetime guarantee. This thing can take a real beating, and it’ll still last forever.

Moment Fanny Sling

Moment Fanny Sling

Who says fanny packs aren’t cool? The Moment Fanny Sling is the most comfortable fanny pack out there, and it’s versatile enough for travelers to take it from the city to the mountain trail. It’s incredibly customizable, with seven different adjustment points to suit anyone’s height and waist size.

Although the Moment Sling Pack is a pretty standard size for a fanny pack it can also expand up to four inches to fit a 35mm camera. It uses canvas and ripstop to keep everything dry inside, but the material doesn’t get too sweaty either. The icing on the cake: it’s covered under a lifetime warranty.

Give the Gift of Travel Books

Take it from me—literary lovers can never have too much reading material. Give the gift of travel books!

10 Years a Nomad

10 Years a Nomad

10 Years a Nomad is more than your typical travel read. Written by Matt Kepnes (founder of Nomadic Matt), this book dives head-first into what it means to be a world traveler and budget backpacker. From hilarious stories about staying in hostels to life-changing advice on traveling long-term, this is the ultimate travel read for anyone with wanderlust.

On the Road

On the Road

If you’re looking for a classic read, then I recommend On the Road , by Jack Kerouac. Based on the adventures of Kerouac’s own road trip across the US, this novel is one of those timeless gifts (especially for road trippers). The engaging narrative and stories of personal exploration make it one of the best gifts for travelers who love to read.

To Shake the Sleeping Self

To Shake the Sleeping Self

A 2018 New York Times Best Seller, To Shake the Sleeping Selfby Jedadiah Jenkins will easily become your new favorite travel book. After quitting his job, Jenkins documents his journey as he sets out on a sixteen months soul-searching cycling trip from Oregon to Patagonia. This autobiography weaves together issues of travel, self-discovery, and sexuality as Jenkins tries to find himself on this road.

We’ve all got one AWOL friend who’s off gallivanting around the world. And, if you can’t think of that friend, it’s probably because you are that friend. So whether you’re shopping for gifts for others or yourself, rest assured that this list of best gifts for travelers has you covered.

November 8, 2020

Unique Travel Gifts $50 and Under

You definitely don’t have to break the bank to find good travel gifts! So many of my favorites are under $50 and would make great travel stocking stuffers, or nice going-away gifts for friends going travelling. I tried to include a good mix of fun travel gifts and practical travel gifts in this list.

I own and use many of these already, and most of the others are sitting in my various carts for future trips. Real-Life Traveler Approved™.

Enjoy the Wood Wooden World Travel Maps & City Maps, $50+!

Unique Travel Gifts Enjoy the Wood Wooden Travel Maps

My TOP unique travel gift idea this year!! It’s one of the best ways I’ve found to commemorate my travels and keep all my travel memories alive 🙂 These handmade wooden world travel maps can be customised with flag pushpins for all the places you or your loved one have visited. They make an incredible accent piece for any home.

I am also stoked on this brand because of their focus on sustainability and their small-scale manufacturing. Most importantly – they’re based in Ukraine. Their manufacturing centre was completely destroyed and they’re currently trying to offload their existing inventory and rebuild. Every purchase helps them do so. The maps are extremely high quality and just a really lovely, thoughtful travel gift. I’m obsessed and couldn’t recommend these more highly as a gift for people who like to travel.

Click here to check out all the Enjoy the Wood wooden travel maps , or make a donation through their site to support Ukraine. Use code JALEH10 for 10% off 🙂

There’s something here for everyone.

Chromecast, $35

If you want bang for your buck, this is the option for what to gift someone who loves travelling. Most hotel rooms and even some in homestays/hostels have TVs, but they can be pretty much worthless in certain countries. I have watched more hours of TV in languages I don’t speak than I could count lol. Chromecast solves that problem, allowing you to stream Netflix/anything from your browser directly to your TV. It’s a LIFESAVER.

Check out reviews and click here to purchase!

Airplane Pendant Necklace, $49.99

ultimate travel gifts

The PERFECT travel gift for her this year — this gorgeous pendant necklace features a plane and a globe, in classic sterling silver dotted with cubic zirconia. Cute, stylish, and tarnish-free, it’s one of the most unique and functional gifts for the traveling woman! This is probably one of my favorite pieces on this travel gift guide – it’s SO cute in person, too.

Check out reviews and purchase here!

Vaccine Card Holder

Is this a little sad? Yes, lol. But in current times, will it come UNBELIEVABLY IN HANDY for your favorite traveler? Yes, lol. This is a super basic, durable, clear plastic card holder to protect your card – literally one of THE best 2021 travel gift ideas. My card is not encased in one of these bad boys, and only 3 months and 5 countries later it is completely BATTERED. I would definitely recommend this as a travel stocking stuffer this year or including it as one of your travel gift basket ideas!

Click here to view prices and purchase a vaccine card holder.

Margarita Travel Kit!

ultimate travel gifts

For anyone (me, lol) who loves getting a little tipsy during their flights but craves a PROPER cocktail, this is a BRILLIANT affordable travel gift idea!! The kit comes sans tequila but contains everything else your fave traveler (or you) needs to make a marg in-flight. And it’s TSA-approved. Yes. YESSS!! Seriously such a fun travel gift. I’m picking these up for my friends this year.

Airbnb Gift Card, $50

If nothing else, give the gift of free travel! There’s a whole world of unbelievable Airbnbs out there. And I don’t know any traveler who wouldn’t jump at a few nights of free accommodation in a cosy house or laid-back beach bungalow.

Please note Airbnb gift cards are currently redeemable to USA ACCOUNT HOLDERS ONLY.

Check out here to purchase an Airbnb gift card!

  Stainless Steel Water Bottle, $21.95

A stainless steel bottle is great for travelers and the environment – win-win. This is a GREAT practical travel gift that most people never get around to buying for themselves. This one has tons of color & size options and it’s top-rated.

  Packing Cubes, $21.63

These are an organizational godsend and probably my favorite travel item I own. They make packing an absolute breeze because they compress to save space and help organize your items. They’re an absolute game-changer. Buy these as gifts for someone going travelling and I guarantee they will use them on every single trip.

  Clip-On Phone Camera Lens, $28.99

Another great gift for travel photographers! This clip-on lens attaches to the phone to allow a wider frame and higher quality shots – and it’s compatible with iPhone, Samsung, and Google phones. The macro lens also allows for close-up detail shots. These are SO much fun to shoot with and make a really fun travel gift.

  Travel Adapter, $9.99

Boring, yes, but necessary. A good travel adapter will always be appreciated, and most travelers just opt for the cheapest version when shopping for themselves. Pick up a compact but multi-functional one with extra USB ports to charge devices, and you’ll get some SERIOUS brownie points.

Portable Phone Charger

This is another must-have that will get a ton of use. There’s nothing worse than your phone running out of juice in middle-of-nowhere, Uzbekistan (I can tell you from experience). Go for a slim, lightweight version to make sure your favorite traveler can always keep it on-hand, just in case!

  Memory Foam Neck Pillow

This is the single best travel gift I could recommend if you’re looking for value. If you know any travelers who don’t have a neck pillow, get them one. Immediately . It will change their life and make flights so much more comfortable & restful. I’ve been using this wraparound pillow for 2+ years and refuse to travel without it, but the one pictured is better-rated and offers a bit more support.

  Foot Hammock

If you know someone who struggles to sleep on flights, get them a foot hammock!! They hang off the tray table and allow you to elevate your feet, creating a much more comfortable resting position. I MacGyver myself a hammock with a sweatshirt or blanket, but would definitely appreciate a legit version. Elevating my feet has completely cured my plane insomnia and saved my life on long flights.

  Travel Towel

A lightweight, quick-drying travel towel is a godsend for any long-term traveler. This is one of those things people often don’t realize they need until they’ve already left.

Pushpin World Map / Scratch Off World Map

My mom got me the scratch off version for Christmas last year and it was one of my best travel themed gifts! It’s so satisfying scratching off new countries, and it makes a cute conversation piece in my room. One of my best friends has the pushpin version which I love too. These are definitely awesome gifts for any avid traveler.

  Collapsible Mug

Perfect gifts for environmentally conscious travelers. I use mine for everything, from coffees to hostel water refills. It’s super compact and lightweight and fits easily in my bag, it’s cute af, and I love that I’m not contributing to creating plastic waste (especially in developing countries where that plastic is likely going to end up in the ocean).

Around the World Spice Set

ultimate travel gifts

This is the perfect gift for world travelers – especially in 2020, where lots of us are stuck at home unexpectedly and unable to travel 🙁 You can gift a little taste of feeling abroad with a round-the-world spice set featuring blends from Morocco, Jamaica, and Thailand, among others! It’s a super unique travel gift idea and one I’d love to get myself.

Waterproof Phone Case

Pretty much every traveler I know has destroyed their phone at least once due to an accident, flood, or falling into a lake (last example being me). Save your traveler friends the hassle and gift them a STURDY waterproof phone case to protect their electronics, so that they too don’t end up abroad with a fried phone. Again, a great practical travel gift that a lot of people won’t bother picking up for themselves, but will literally KISS you for gifting them when they get home.

Extension Cable, $15.19

Another “boring” but unbelievably useful travel gift. For some reason, many countries like to put their power ports in completely incomprehensible positions – and it is NOT A VIBE. I never thought to bring one but would have KILLED for one the past 8 months in Vietnam as I’ve navigated housing with the literal dumbest wiring imaginable. Your traveler might go “wtf” when they open this one, but I PROMISE they will use it on one of their trips and bless you for saving them from a really common inconvenience.

This one also has USB ports and is super compact for travel. I just bought one and am looking forward to trying it out on my next trip!

Unique Travel Gift Ideas Under $200

If you’re looking for super useful travel gift ideas for the travelers in your life, here are some solid mid-range options.

KnackPack Medium, $195

Practical Travel Gifts KnackPack

I cannot & will not stop raving about this backpack lol. The KnackPack is a first-of-its kind multifunctional luggage and is by FAR the best travel backpack I’ve ever used. It’s an AMAZING practical travel gift idea. It has a ton of unique and thoughtful features for travelers looking for something sleek and functional. My medium pack is TSA-approved as a carry on but fits literally an INSANE amount of stuff in it.

Amongst other features, it packs like a suitcase, and has a ton of additional pockets, making storage super easy. It also has a side water bottle pocket, comfy padding on the back, and a trolley sleeve for easy stacking on my roller bag. I genuinely cannot recommend this bag more highly.  They’ve thought of EVERYTHING and I truly couldn’t recommend this more highly as a unique travel gift this year!! It’s a game-changer.

Click here to check out color options and reviews for the Medium KnackPack , or here to check out their full range of sizes .

  Kindle Paperwhite E-Reader, $129.99

Books and travel are… not compatible. When you’ve got limited space in your bag, it’s really not practical to lug around more than a book or two (if that). And that SUCKS if you love to read. If you know a bookworm who loves to travel, get them an e-reader and they will love you forever. Curling up in bed or passing a long train ride with all your favorite books at your fingertips… that’s priceless. I would love  to get one of these… are you reading this, Mom? 😉

Check out reviews and prices here!

SplayTray, $55

Useful Travel Gifts Ideas Splaytray

This nifty invention by a friend of mine is a patented-design carry bag that expands out into a fullsize tray. It’s SO HANDY. The sides are magnetised so once you want access to all your makeup, art supplies, etc at once, you just pop the sides and everything is laid out – no more rummaging through your bag for what you’re looking for. It comes in small/medium versions and a ton of different color options!!!

  Nanopresso Machine, $64.90

For the caffeine-addicted traveler. I had no idea a “nanopresso” was a thing until recently, but it looks AMAZING. Basically it’s a teeny-tiny portable machine that brews coffee! Just add coffee grounds and water. I was a bit skeptical of the functionality, but the reviews are actually solid – so this one is a safe bet for coffee lovers! Grab the NS adapter to make it Nespresso-pod compatible!

  Fujifilm InstaX Polaroid Camera, $72

Especially in the age of ultra-curated social media, there’s something really special about real  snapshots. Your fave traveler will have a blast snapping pics with one of these, and they’ll come home with a stack of absolutely priceless photos. My favorite travel photos are consistently the grainy, garbage quality late-night snaps on friends’ Polaroids – those are always the real moments, and the ones I most want to remember!

Check out reviews, colors, and prices here!

Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker

There’s something about speakers that makes everything more fun – whether you’re laying on a beach in Thailand, enjoying a beer in Germany, or hiking in Switzerland. This one is waterproof, compact, and the sound quality is amazing! My flatmates have this exact model and it’s survived countless trips to Bondi Beach.

 Mobile Wifi Hotspot

For anyone who lives online, a mobile hotspot is a must have travel gift! This little contraption creates a mobile wifi network, so your favorite traveler can stay connected, even in the middle of nowhere. This is great for people who travel frequently because I guarantee they are sick of weak wi-fi and dropped connection.

Priority Pass Membership, currently 40% off at just $55 (normally $99!)

Unique Travel Gifts for Friends Going Travelling

Priority Pass is an exclusive service that grants members discounted access to hundreds of airport lounges around the world. Especially between long-haul international flights, it makes a huge difference to be able to relax, take a shower, and squeeze in a (complimentary!) gin & tonic. Whoever you pick this one up for will LOVE you.

Check out pricing and membership tiers here!

Unique & Useful Travel Gift Ideas $200 and Over AKA Presents For People You REALLY Love

Kidding, I know you can’t put a price tag on love 😉 But if you’ve got a bit higher budget, here are some mid-range to luxury travel gift ideas that your giftee would DIE to have, but probably won’t splurge on themselves.

Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones, $199.99 (on sale from $299.99!!))

An absolute game-changer on flights, and probably one of the greatest investment items for a frequent traveler. You don’t realize how loud and disruptive airplane or outside noise can be until you can switch it off with the flick of a button. It makes a huge difference in sleep and comfort to upgrade from regular headphones. This Bose pair is one of the highest-rated noise cancelling headphones on the market, and my personal fave.

GoPro Hero 8, $299.99 (on sale from $349.99!!)

For any adventurers, a GoPro is a must have travel gift!! This bad boy can handle any weather condition and the picture quality is amazing considering how compact it is. It’s so fun to shoot with one and I’ve always come out with some gorgeous, in-the-moment adventure snaps. Don’t forget to pick up a GoPro dome to take some seriously cool half-underwater photos!

DJI Mini Drone, $399.99

DJI drones are some of the highest-rated on the market. They create spectacular aerial shots and are one of the best gifts for travel photographers. This is a definite investment but seriously opens up a whole new world of possibility for photos! I personally would kill for a drone, especially as a solo traveler who often struggles to take pics unassisted.

Chic Luggage Set, $325

Who wouldn’t love some sleek new luggage? My personal favorite brand Calpak makes beautiful luggage sets in a wide variety of colors and patterns. The rose-gold (pictured) is the most popular, but I own the white marble set , and have my eye on the rainbow gradient . They’re super lightweight but very sturdy and well-made.

Shay Mitchell’s Beis line is also EXTREMELY well-rated and very sleek. Revolve currently stocks a ton of luggage options including a 29” roller linked here , or a 21” roller linked here (both come in black and beige!).

Panasonic Lumix Mirrorless Camera, $479.99

If you know anyone who loves photography and travel, get them a mirrorless camera. An iPhone simply doesn’t do incredible destinations justice, but a DSLR is way too bulky to be practical for travel (I hate lugging mine around everywhere). A mirrorless camera gives you all the quality of a DSLR without the heft – it’s the perfect travel camera. I’ll be swapping out my Canon 6D for the Panasonic as soon as I can afford it!

FitBit Versa 3 Smartwatch & Activity Tracker, $229.95

Traveling does a number on your body, and it’s really hard to stay in shape (especially when you love trying new foods). Any long-term traveler would love a tracker to help monitor their activity and stay on top of their health while abroad. This was my personal most-wanted item this year, and I’m confident I’ll get a ton of use out of it on future travels.

Gift an Experience

If all else fails, and you don’t want to burden your traveler with more Stuff – give them a gift they’ll never forget! Like a Harry Potter studio tour in London . Or a hot air balloon ride over Sydney’s Hunter Valley wine country. Or a romantic dinner cruise through the San Francisco Bay .

Or… just grab them a gift card and let them choose their dream experience .

Unique Travel Gifts for Her

Silk sleep mask.

Trying to sleep on a flight or in an unfamiliar environment (like a night train) can be absolutely miserable – a sleep mask will help to get some shut-eye. I have this pink silk version and it’s so  cute and super soft.

Shampoo & Conditioner Bars

The number of times my shampoo/conditioner have leaked into my bag and destroyed some important possession are like… endless. And continually lugging around/purchasing new (sh*tty) hair products is both impractical, and bad for your hair. Solution? Gift travelers shampoo/conditioner bars (and bar soap!), which travel easy and leak-proof, while keeping hair sleek and moisturised even in the most remote destinations.

Cute Leather Luggage Tags

Especially if someone has indistinct luggage (like a basic black case), these will help avoid any mix-ups at the airport. And in case the bag gets lost, airport staff will easily be able to identify it. Plus they’re cute. My ex’s family got me these one year and I LOVE them – I use them every time I fly!

Personalized Leather Passport Holder

Your passport is the most important thing you take with you on your travels! And especially with frequent trips, they can get pretty banged up – mine is literally falling apart. If you know someone whose passport looks a little worse for the wear, get them a passport holder. They look nice and they’re a super functional travel gift.

Also, Socks

I know it’s a running joke that you know you’re old once you get excited about socks for Christmas, but like, I would really love some socks lol. Whatever you decide to buy this year, just chuck some socks in the package too.

If you or someone you love needs socks too, here’s a link . You can never have enough socks, guys.

ANYWAY, I hope this helped you sort out your last-minute Christmas shopping this year!! Hope you guys have a lovely holiday season, and please let me know if you ended up buying any of these gifts for world travelers in your life. I’d love to hear about it!

Virgin Atlantic Queen Of The Skies navy sweatshirt - travel gifts

What might look like just another graphic jumper to the untrained eye, will in fact make a particularly thoughtful – and much-valued – gift for the travel lover in your life. Not only will it keep them cosy and stylish on their next flight, but it also has a deeper meaning, featuring artwork from Virgin Atlantic's A330 neo aircraft Queen of the Skies as well as the registration G-VEII on the sleeve in tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth.

It's also unisex, made from organic cotton, comes in a range of sizes, and is designed to have a modern, boxy fit for ultimate comfort. A new in-flight essential.

Oliver Bonas Pink Heatless Hair Curling Set - travel gifts

No matter how perfectly preened you are when getting on a flight, stepping off the plane looking dishevelled and slightly worse for wear is an unfortunate side effect of even the shortest-haul journey. For the beauty-conscious traveller, therefore, this heatless hair curling set is a total game changer.

Oliver Bonas' nifty kit comes with a curling ribbon, claw clip and scrunchies that can be easily packed into a carry-on and put into place mid-flight to create salon-worthy waves, ready for a stylish arrival. This is also a great gift for those who don't want to lug their styling tools halfway across the world, or for the time-poor who want to make the most of their time on board.

Christmas gift guide to Moscow surroundings

ultimate travel gifts

Visitors from America and Western Europe might be surprised to discover that Russia celebrates Christmas on January 7th. That’s because the Russian Orthodox Church follows the Julian calendar. After the end of the Soviet Union, some Russians have begun celebrating Christmas on December 25 in accordance with the Gregorian calendar. But many Russians still observe the tradition of fasting on January 6th, breaking the fast with a large feast on Christmas Eve after the first star has appeared in the sky.

During the Soviet era, Christmas and religious traditions were banned in Russia. Santa Claus was replaced by Ded Moroz, or, Grandfather Frost, an old man with a long white beard who would bring gifts to children on New Year’s instead of Christmas. According to Russian tradition, Ded Moroz is accompanied by his granddaughter, Snegurochka, the Snowmaiden, who helps him on his journey to give presents to children.

Although the tradition of having a Christmas tree, known as a yolka in Russian, was also banned during Soviet times, Russians got around this by having New Year’s trees from which they hung homemade decorations. Today, the restrictions of the Soviet Union have faded into history, and during the Christmas season visitors to Russia can even purchase Christmas ornaments in the shape of matryoshka dolls, or religious icons that depict nativity scenes.

Heading counterclockwise around the Golden Ring this holiday season, northeast of Moscow, your first stop will most likely be the city of Vladimir, home to some of Russia’s most striking churches and cathedrals. The Vladimir region is known for its fine crystal. Stop by the Crystal, Lacquer Miniatures, and Embroidery Museum ( 2 Bolshaya Moskovskaya ) for an overview of traditional crafts before visiting the gift shop in the museum to browse the crystal selection. Vladimir Chic ( 2 Dvoryanskaya ) also sells local glass and crystal work.

Typical souvenirs are also for sale in Vladimir’s old town, especially by the Golden Gate, a triumphal arch and defensive tower that is one of the last-remaining parts of the wall that once surrounded ancient Vladimir and a sure stop on any tour of the Golden Ring.

Just 63 kilometers from Vladimir lays the nearby city of Gus-Khrustalny , the ‘Crystal Goose,’ also home to a rich glass and crystal making tradition. You can visit the glassmaking factory in Gus-Khrustalny and buy gifts ranging from plates and vases to decanters, or visit the outlet store back in Moscow ( 4 Ilyinka ) just east of the Kremlin.

North of Vladimir, you’ll arrive in Suzdal, one of the Golden Ring route’s more tranquil towns. Suzdal boasts a number of small bazaars and stands outside the main tourist sites where visitors can purchase local honey mead, called medovukha, along with traditional crafts, like a pair valenki, or Russian woolen boots, which make an ideal Christmas gift for friends and family back home. The shopping stands outside Suzdal’s Museum of Wooden Architecture and Peasant Life ( Ul. Pushkarskaya ) are also highly recommended. Market Square ( Torgovaya Pl ) houses a number of shops where visitors can search for arts and crafts.

Following the Golden Ring north of Suzdal, many tours will stop in the city of Kostroma, a former trading outpost on the immense Volga River. One of the city’s highlights is the Museum of Linen and Birchbark ( 38 Tereshkova ), where visitors can view exhibits on traditional Russian crafts woven from flax and bark. A gift shop in the basement sells tablecloths, napkins, baskets, linen dolls, and traditional clothing typical of the region.

South from Kostroma, stop in the city of Rostov-Veliky for enamel jewelry, a craft which allows artists to produce small paintings on metal that are then fired to produce a thin glaze over the image. Rostov became famous for its tradition of enamel work. Today, visitors can purchase rings, earrings, bracelets, brooches, and jewelry boxes in the gift shop of the Rostov Enamel factory ( 3 Borisoglebskoye Highway ).

While you’re in Rostov, visit the House of Crafts ( 16 Vtoraya Tolstovskaya Naberezhnaya ) for local pottery and the Souvenirs shop ( 5 Ul. Kamennyi Most ) for ushanka hats—Russian fur caps with earflaps—paintings, and samovars for tea lovers.

The last two stops on a tour of the Golden Ring are the cities of Pereslavl-Zalesskiy and Sergiev Posad. Pereslavl is most famous for its embroidery work, available at the Art Salon ( 12 Ul. Sovetskaya ) along with souvenirs made of wood and stone. Nearby Sergiev Posad is considered the place where Russia’s matryoshka dolls were first invented, and was the chief production center of the dolls before Soviet times. Visit the city’s Toy Museum ( 123 Pr. Krasny Armii ) to get a better sense of the birthplace of one of Russia’s most recognizable toys, then head over to the market alongside the Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius—one of the city’s most important sites—to load up on matryoshka dolls, painted eggs, and icons before going home.

If you’ll be in the Golden Ring during New Years, the city of Vladimir hosts an impressive Christmas fair, with an iceskating rink and performances by local artists, in the main square ( Sobornaya Pl ). In most other Golden Ring cities you’ll find similar events in the center square as Christmas nears.

Most shops and markets in the Golden Ring are open year round. If you’re coming to Russia for a short period of time, whether in winter or summer, consider a trip to this stunning part of the country, and bring an extra bag if you plan to go shopping for Christmas gifts.

Financial disclosures show that state lawmakers were showered with more than $330,000 in gifts, plus more than $1.1 million in travel sponsored by interest groups. That total last year is 28% higher than in 2022.

Lea esta historia en Español

Last June, more than half of California’s lawmakers — Republicans and Democrats alike, with no particular ideological preference — attended a celebratory gala for new Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas. They left with a gift: A personally engraved box worth $85.94.

These gifts are documented in financial disclosures that elected officials in California have to file every March for the previous calendar year. The reports, officially called Form 700, provide insight into gifts, sponsored travel, plus any property they own and stocks they hold.

As part of the new Digital Democracy initiative, CalMatters has extracted the information from these reports into a series of spreadsheets that are accessible to the public and has analyzed them to give a glimpse into potential financial conflicts of interest.

How much were gifts worth?

First, the rules: If you take a legislator out to dinner and the bill is at least $50, they have to report it. And if you give them something that puts them over the $590 annual gift limit, they have to give it back.

In 2023, gifts worth a total of more than $330,000 were given to legislators, according to the reports. That total is more than double the $163,000 worth of gifts reported in 2022.

All but one of the 120 lawmakers received a gift. The outlier: Sen. Dave Cortese , a Campbell Democrat, who hasn’t reported taking a gift for at least the last three years.

Democratic Assemblymember Avelino Valencia from Anaheim reported accepting, and then reimbursing, just more than $2,300 in gifts and $1,100 in sponsored travel. “Not accepting gifts or reimbursing for the cost of gifts has been a policy of mine since serving on the Anaheim City Council,” he said in an email. “It dismisses perceived narratives that do not align with my values as a public servant.”

An analysis of the gift givers reflects who controls the Legislature — Democrats. Nearly 20% came from party leaders, a total of $24,000, almost all for food and drinks at policy retreats. The value of all the gifts Democrats reported receiving is more than five times reported by Republicans, who hold 26 of the 120 seats.

The “Speaker 2023 Inaugural Fund” run by Rivas gave $22,000 worth of stuff at that big reception, including those engraved boxes. The fund accepted donations of at least $25,000 each from labor unions, including those representing nurses, prison guards and teachers. Businesses, such as Kaiser and PG&E, cut checks for $50,000 each.

Anthony Rendon , Rivas’ predecessor as Assembly speaker, ranked third on the list of top gift givers, doling out $16,000 worth of food and jackets to 19 lawmakers.

Wining and dining comprised more than a quarter of all gifts last year; at least $85,000 was spent picking up the tab for more than 100 legislators on more than 750 occasions. (Legislators get paid $128,215 a year, plus $214 a day for expenses when they’re in session, and leaders get more.)

But not all the gifts were from interest or advocacy groups, and some even show the human connection between legislators.

Assemblymember Corey Jackson , Democrat from Moreno Valley, gave 16 of his female coworkers flowers for their birthdays, at a total cost of about $1,000. They were bipartisan bouquets; three went to Republicans in the Assembly.

Assemblymember Lori Wilson , a Democrat from Suisun City who underwent treatment for breast cancer last year , received flowers from Jackson and from 14 other individuals and groups, worth about $1,400 in total.

Free travel for legislators

Fancy dinners and receptions are nice, but the annual gift limit keeps the total relatively low. That isn’t the case with sponsored travel, which is effectively unlimited.

Special interest groups and nonprofits flew lawmakers to Argentina, Canada, France and elsewhere around the globe. In 2023, more than 100 groups spent about $1.1 million on sponsored trips, compared to 85 groups and $950,000 in travel in 2022.

While 105 legislators reported taking at least one trip last year, three accepted more than $30,000 worth.

Sen. Nancy Skinner , an Oakland Democrat, reported her four trips were worth $38,000, the most of any legislator. The trips are valuable for getting ideas about what works well, including countries with similar infrastructure, she said.

“We did intensive learning about France’s high speed rail, which is of course much harder to learn about in the U.S. since, where do we have examples of electric high-speed rail?” she said.

Skinner also said she doesn’t accept every invitation for a trip, only those on her key interests: energy, the environment, housing and public safety.

Assemblymember Mike Gipson , a Gardena Democrat, reported trips with the second highest value — 10 journeys worth more than $31,000. Assemblymember Mike Fong , a Democrat from Monterey Park, accepted 15 trips that were worth more than $30,600.

Assemblymember Blanca Pacheco , Democrat from Downey, was the most frequent traveler. She reported taking 18 trips last year, but they were valued at only $27,150.

Even if the trips lead to policy or ideas for legislators, when nonprofits invite legislators and their representatives attend as well, it creates at least the appearance of a potential conflict of interest, said Carmen Balbar, executive director of Consumer Watchdog.

“If you have somebody’s ear, you have a chance to influence them. And most constituents of every lawmaker isn’t going to be able to sponsor a trip for their representative,” she said.

More transparency could help reassure Californians that their legislators are working in the public interest, she said: “Maybe, when we pull back the curtain and have an idea of who was there and what their interests might be, we’ll be able to better parse if they’re lobbying or not.”

Nancy Skinner

Democrat, State Senate, District 9 (Oakland)

Benjamin Allen

Democrat, State Senate, District 24 (El Segundo)

This session, Sen. Ben Allen , an El Segundo Democrat, is pushing a bill to increase disclosure of these trips .

As CalMatters reported last year , a 2015 law intended to require more transparency by organizations that sponsor legislative travel has had little impact. It requires annual reports by these groups listing any donors who gave more than $1,000 and also accompanied elected officials on any portion of a trip — but only if the travel expenses totaled more than $10,000, or at least $5,000 to a single official and if the spending accounts for at least one-third of the nonprofit’s total expenses.

Allen’s bill would delete that second requirement about expenses and also require disclosure from any person who organizes trips, whether it’s a nonprofit or a business. He said Monday that he authored the measure largely in response to the CalMatters story.

“If you're a massive organization that is spending money on a gazillion other things, does that make the disclosure of your trips any less meaningful or impactful and important?” he asked. “Disclosure helps the press and the public and other folks that are trying to engage in the political process to better understand the system that's in place to influence legislators.”

Allen, himself, went on 6 trips valued at $13,960 last year, plus $40,000 worth in 2022.

How free trips for California legislators lead to bills

How free trips for California legislators lead to bills

Just as in 2022, the largest sponsor of trips last year was the California Foundation on the Environment and the Economy , and it wasn’t close. The group spent about $375,000 — nearly one-third of the total for all trip sponsors — to take legislators on “study tours,” where legislators and some foundation board members meet with foreign business and government leaders to learn about policy.

The San Francisco-based nonprofit has organized these tours for decades, funded and attended by representatives of companies and interest groups with business before the state. The foundation’s board is made up of organizations that don’t usually agree on issues, such as the Western States Petroleum Association and the Environmental Defense Fund, or municipal water providers and irrigation districts that mostly serve agricultural interests.

In an email to CalMatters last year, Jay Hansen, president and CEO of the foundation, said the purpose of the trips is not to advocate on behalf of its board members’ interests but to help lawmakers “better understand complex issues, witness best practices, and contemplate policy implications.”

At the same time, the foundation has said the trips have led to bills . Legislators who have gone on these trips told CalMatters last year that they are useful.

In 2023 the nonprofit sponsored eight trips, three abroad, including last March to Denmark, where nine legislators looked at offshore wind and other low carbon energy sources. Some foundation events are closer to home: In February 2023, 18 legislators went to Napa for an energy policy conference, and in June, seven lawmakers also went to Napa for a transportation policy retreat and stayed at the ritzy Silverado Hotel.

The pace of travel picked up in the second half of 2023, though, with a trip nearly every month. That’s expected: The fall of odd numbered years is called the “interim study recess” by the state Senate because there aren’t legislative elections, giving lawmakers time to learn about policy.

Last fall, the foundation took legislators to British Columbia to learn about recycling , to Lake Tahoe to talk about technology and to Southern California in September to observe more low carbon energy projects. Legislators toured high-speed rail in France in October and closed out the year at a water conference at the Ritz-Carlton in Laguna Niguel.

The next largest funder of legislator travel in 2023 was the California YIMBY Education Fund, which spent $72,500 to take five legislators to London and Paris for a week to learn about transit, housing, and land use policies.

It was the first year the pro-housing group sponsored legislative travel, with a goal to “open up conversations with legislators,” said Matthew Lewis, the organization’s director of communications.

While the group might organize another trip, it prioritizes policymaking in Sacramento. “If we ever found ourselves in a budget crunch, we wouldn’t be doing this because our mission is to pass pro-housing policy in California,” Lewis said.

Some legislators reported trips that were sponsored by multiple organizations. One example: The Bay Area Caucus Policy Retreat, a January 2023 event in Sausalito that involved as many as seven groups: the Asian Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus, California State Association of Electrical Workers, California Teachers Association, San Manuel Mission Band of Indians, United Food and Commercial Workers and PG&E. They reported spending more than $8,400 for eight legislators to attend.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
