Best Minimalistic Wrap

Loft travel wrap, what to look for in a travel wrap.

Travel wraps are essentially extra-large scarves, and size is one of the greatest considerations you'll have when choosing a travel wrap. A good size is about 70 inches long and 30 inches wide, so it can stretch over most of your body.

You'll also want to pay attention to material. There are several fabrics that will be both cozy and warm without feeling too bulky, making them ideal for travel wraps. We've outlined a few of the most popular options below.

  • Cashmere:  Derived from Kashmir goats , these soft fibers are washed and then spun into yarn to create plush wraps. Loved for its soft warmth, ability to wick moisture and breathability, cashmere is guaranteed to keep you cozy on a long travel day. It does require a higher upkeep, however, as it's recommended to be dry cleaned or hand-washed due to its fine nature. We also suggest looking for manufacturers who  practice more animal-friendly shearing techniques .
  • Wool:  Made  primarily from sheep's fur , wool is known to be some of the warmest fabric around. (Read: When that airplane air conditioner hits, a wool wrap will keep you nice and toasty.) It's hypoallergenic, making it a great choice for those with sensitivities, and it's mildew- and mold-resistant (wool can reportedly soak up to  as much as 30 percent  of its weight in water), meaning even if you spill a bit of liquid on it, it won't get super gross in your suitcase. You shouldn't put your wool in the dryer to avoid shrinking.
  • Polyester:  A synthetic fiber  made from a type of plastic , this ultra-durable material is moisture-wicking and ultra weather-resistant. It's also highly wrinkle-resistant, so it won't look like junk no matter how badly you smush it up under you in the back of the car.
  • Acrylic : Acrylic is a  synthetic alternative  to wool that is just as snuggly and dependable. It's highly resistant to UV fading, which means the dye will stay vibrant for longer, though it's not the most eco-friendly option around. Acrylic fibers also tend to stretch with heat, so never wash your scarf in hot water.
  • Cotton:  Classic and easy, cotton is a staple for its durability, breathability and light breeziness. It's also another great option  if you have allergies  to any other fabrics.
  • Silk:  If you want to add a but of luxe to your ensemble, silk is not only beautiful, but is a  natural protein fiber  obtained from the mulberry silkworm that's extremely strong and helps to regulate your temperature. It's lightweight, breathable and dries quickly, and it will feel nice against your skin, which can improve relaxation and sleep for some—perfect for any long journey ahead.
  • Microfiber :  Made from synthetic fibers , such as polyamide (a nylon byproduct) and polyester, this elastic fabric will be super soft, since it has very small thread diameters. Beyond that, it's long-lasting and super lightweight, which is ideal if you're strictly a  carry-on  only person. The one downside? These fibers easily attract dirt and grime like a magnet.

How to Style a Travel Wrap

The best part of a travel wrap is its versatility. Since it can be worn in so many ways, you can literally style it with just about anything. Going poncho-style? Try it over a loose top or blouse and let it serve as your top layer. (Pro tip: Wear it with shawl pins or shawl buckle clasp so it won’t fall down.) If you're throwing it on as a  scarf , a bulkier sweater and jeans will be fine, since it will sit neatly on top. When worn as a blanket, you can throw it over anything from a suit dress to a pair of  sweats .

We’ve rounded up the best travel wraps you can buy based on material, shape and overall coziness below.

TripSavvy / Marcus Millan

A great pair of travel pants is a lot like a great friend: supportive without being restrictive and ready for any occasion. Look for breathable, moisture-wicking materials that won’t wrinkle in your suitcase or after hours on the airplane. A relaxed fit (or plenty of stretch if you opt for form-fitting leggings) is essential for freedom of movement on your adventures, while the ability to transition from day to evening wear with the right accessories is a major plus that cuts down on packing requirements.

Finding pants that meet all these criteria can seem difficult, which is why our team of travel experts took on the task of testing 40 of the most popular options currently on the market. We wore each pair in multiple scenarios from air travel to gym workouts for two weeks, then scored them for fit, comfort, quality, durability, design, and value to choose our favorites. Our overall winner was the Stretch High-Rise Jogger from Lululemon, with its super soft material; loose, breathable fit; and useful pockets. Here are all the travel pants we loved.

Final Verdict

How we tested.

  • What to Look for in Travel Pants

Why Trust TripSavvy

Best overall, lululemon high-rise jogger.

  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5
  • Design 4.5 /5

Incredibly soft

Breathable and moisture-wicking

Versatile drawstring waistband

Some may prefer a slimmer cut

The Lululemon Stretch High-Rise Jogger may well be the perfect travel pant, with a classic, loose-fitting silhouette that we found supremely comfortable. Although they’re meant to be full-length, the tapered ankle means they look good even if they come up a little shorter on tall women, while the Luxtreme fabric’s combination of softness and stretchiness offers a slightly more elevated aesthetic than one might expect from a pair of joggers. Designed for breathability, the moisture-wicking fabric also handles temperature changes well (as proved when we tested them on a journey from chilly San Francisco to balmy Hawaii).

We loved the butter-soft waistband and the fact that while stretchy, these joggers also have a drawstring that you can cinch for a more tailored fit. The drawstring can be worn visibly or hidden inside for a more streamlined look. We also appreciated the extra-deep pockets, which held our phone securely even when sitting down. The pants also boast a hidden zipper pocket and card sleeve. Best of all, after multiple plane and car journeys (and three washes) the pants looked and felt brand new. Color choices are mostly muted and include kelly green, utility blue, and black.

Sizes: 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 | Materials: Nylon, Lycra, elastane, polyester

Best Lightweight

Outdoor voices relay wide leg pant.

Public Lands

Easy-on elasticated waistband

Great freedom of movement

Generous pockets

Sizing is not particularly accurate

The mid-rise Relay Wide Leg Pants from Outdoor Voices score sustainability points with their recycled polyester and spandex construction. We also found the combination to be incredibly comfortable, even on a journey from New York City to Florida that involved several different modes of transport and a significant temperature change. The pants are breathable and lightweight without feeling cheap, with a decent amount of stretch. We loved the branded, elasticated waistband—no more struggling with zippers, buttons, or drawstrings while rushing for a flight.

The elasticity also gave us full freedom of movement while performing squats as part of our testing process. As a result, we feel the pants would be ideal for everything from all-day walking tours to hiking, biking, and working out on vacation. Spacious pockets are another highlight, although we noticed that anything weighty did tend to pull the pants down a bit. They come in black, oceanic (blue), and gravel (beige). We recommend sizing down for the best fit.

Sizes: XXS, XS, S, M, L, XL | Materials: Recycled polyester, spandex

Best for Work

Quince 100 percent european linen pants.

  • Design 5 /5

Flattering, supportive shape

Wrinkle-resistant material

Elasticated for pull-on convenience

Multiple inseam lengths available in select colors only

Pockets are purely decorative

If you’re looking for pants that you can wear straight to a meeting after arriving at the airport, look no further than the Quince Ultra-Stretch Ponte Straight Leg Pants. They offer all the convenience of traditional travel pants, with an elasticated waistband for easy on and off and four-way-stretch fabric for complete freedom of movement. But, with their straight cut and thoughtful detailing (think belt loops and faux pockets on the front and back), they are also elegant enough for the boardroom.

We love that these pants are wrinkle-resistant, so you don’t need to waste time looking for an iron in your hotel room. And finding the right size is easy with three inseam lengths to choose from. Our tester wears an XL and has a pear-shaped body type. She loved the pants’ fit, finding them comfortable yet supportive with good tummy control (without feeling like shapewear). The only downside? We wish there were even more sizes to choose from and that all inseam lengths were available in every colorway.

Sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL; 28-inch, 30-inch, 32-inch inseam | Materials: Rayon, nylon, spandex

Liverpool The Gia Glider Ankle Skinny Jean

Available in regular and tall lengths

Can be dressed up or down

Functioning pockets

Fit loosens slightly in between washes

Sometimes you have to pack light and one way to do that is to opt for pants that you can dress up or down for any occasion—like the Liverpool Los Angeles The Gia Gliders. Thicker and more supportive than leggings yet stretchier, softer, and more comfortable than regular jeans, these mid-rise jeggings come in two lengths and can be pulled on in seconds. We found them amazingly comfortable, even after full days in the office, running errands, or traveling across the city.

A faux zipper, a working button, and belt loops add style points. And, although the front pockets are too small to be very useful, we really appreciated the functionality of the full-size back pockets. We found that the pants offered a great range of movement (although we wouldn’t necessarily recommend them for your next yoga session!), and loved that they were thick enough never to have to worry about see-through areas. We did find that they bagged slightly after a few days’ wear, but also that they returned to their original shape after washing.

Sizes: 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16; regular, tall | Materials: Cotton, rayon, modal

Best With Pockets

Wayre jetsetter trouser.

Inclusive sizing

Incredibly versatile

Sustainable and ethically made

Not ideal for colder weather

If you prioritize pockets when looking for the perfect pair of pants, you’ll love the Wayre Jetsetter Trousers. They offer six functional pockets: four on the sides and back, each large enough for a phone or wallet; a card pocket; and a pickpocket-proof zippered pocket capable of accommodating a passport, cash, or keys. We also love the broad range of sizes offered, including standard and tall lengths. We loved the fit, finding them true to size with a waistband that wasn’t too tight or loose, but just right.

The style is wide-legged, with a cropped length and high-rise waist. They’re flexible enough to be comfy on the plane or when exploring your destination, but also smart enough to dress up come evening. We feel this versatility helps to justify the pants’ admittedly high price tag. They are made of durable Aire-Flex fabric, which is breathable, spill- and odor-proof, wrinkle-proof, and rated for UPF 30+ sun protection. It’s also bluesign-certified for sustainability points, and available in six gorgeous colors from bronze to rose water.

Sizes: 00, 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24 | Materials: Aire-Flex (rPET)

TripSavvy / Julia Sayers

Most Comfortable

Vuori performance jogger.

  • Design 4 /5

Unbelievably soft fabric

Completely unrestricted movement

Can be tumble dried

Pockets aren’t particularly functional

Cropped style may not suit all tastes

Vuori Performance Joggers are made from DreamKnit fabric: a recycled polyester and elastane blend that’s impossibly soft and comfortable on long travel days. The pants are also breathable and moisture-wicking, with four-way stretch for full freedom of movement. The fit is slim yet relaxed, with a mid-rise waist and a tapered, cropped leg. We liked the adjustability of the drawstring waist and the fact that the fit remained consistent on every wear. Some of us that are tall weren't a big fan of the cropped style, though.

The joggers have two side pockets, which are deep enough to hold your phone or wallet. However, we found that anything bulky looked a little odd due to the pants’ slightly clingy style. Nevertheless, we believe the durable, quality fabric makes them well worth their high-end price tag and appreciated that unlike many of the pants on this list, ythese ones can be tumble dried without shrinking, stretching, or pilling. Colors range from black camo and navy to a dusky pink marsala heather.

Sizes: XXS, XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL | Materials: Recycled polyester, elastane

Best Leggings

Abercrombie & fitch ypb studiosoft legging.

Abercrombie & Fitch

  • Quality 4.5 /5

Flattering, sculpting design

No movement, even during high-impact activities

Relatively affordable

Lighter colors may show sweat when working out

The Abercrombie YPB StudioSoft 7/8 Length Leggings are made from a super soft, stretchy, and supportive nylon and elastane blend. We loved that they were like a second skin without making us feel like a stuffed sausage. The double-layer waistband compresses without being uncomfortable for a smoothing effect, while an ultra high-rise cut and sculpting, V-shaped back seaming help flatter your figure, whatever your body type. We felt that the leggings were pretty breathable, although some sweat did show through on the light color we tested.

One highlight for us was that the leggings stayed firmly in place with no sagging, looseness, or riding up no matter what we wore them for—including a high-impact gym workout. With completely unimpeded movement, we could see them performing well in any travel scenario, from sightseeing to adventure tours. There’s even a hidden interior waistband pocket for cards or keys. The leggings are the most affordable on this list and come in three inseam lengths (short, regular, and long) and four colors (lilac, oat, onyx, and mineral blue).

Sizes: XXS, XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL; short, regular, long | Materials: Nylon, elastane

TripSavvy / Sophia Devito

Quince Ponte Straight Leg Pant

  • Durability 4.5 /5

Naturally heat regulating

Retain quality after multiple washes

Ethically sourced and produced

Unstructured fit loosens throughout the day

These beautiful linen pants from Quince are ethically woven from 100 percent European flax, making them naturally hypoallergenic, breathable, and heat regulating. We found them so light and comfortable, it was easy to forget we were wearing pants at all. After trying them on, we would describe them as “just easy,” from putting them on to accessorizing them for different occasions. The linen is also very high quality, with no changes to its look or feel after several washes and enough thickness not to have to worry about visible underwear.

The fit is true to size, with a streamlined, straight-leg aesthetic that we feel is very versatile. The cropped legs hit just above the ankle, making them practical for navigating less-than-pristine airport bathrooms and cute when paired with sneakers, sandals, and flip-flops. If we could make one change? We’d add a drawstring to the elasticated waist to counteract the fact that it does stretch a little with extended wear. Finally, the pants have three functioning pockets and come in nine attractive colors.

Sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL | Materials: European flax linen

TripSavvy / Jackie Napalan

Our overall favorite travel pants were the Stretch High-Rise Joggers from Lululemon, which we loved for their butter-soft comfort, stretch, and stylish appearance. For something a little more formal, choose Quince’s elegant yet eminently practical Ultra-Stretch Ponte Straight Leg Pants .

Each pair of pants considered for this article went through the same real-life testing process. First, we unboxed and visually inspected the pants to gain an overall impression of material and construction quality. We tested the design and function of features, including pockets, zippers, buttons, and drawstrings; then put the pants on to perform a series of squats. This gave us an idea of their fit, breathability, and stretch.

Then, we wore each pair for at least four six-hour periods over two weeks. We wore them for traveling and everyday activities, including going to work, attending social events, and running errands. Finally, we washed the pants at least once according to the manufacturer’s care guidelines to see how well they held up. Each pair was scored from one to five for fit, comfort, quality, durability, design, and value, with overall scores informing our category winners.

What to Look For in Women's Travel Pants

Comfort and flexibility are key when it comes to travel pants, which is why many of our favorites are made from technical blends featuring materials like nylon, elastane, spandex, polyester, and Lycra. These blends are typically breathable and moisture-wicking, too, making them easily able to handle temperature changes and great for active vacation pursuits such as hiking or sightseeing tours. Natural materials like cotton and linen are also comfy and breathable, although you’ll have to pack carefully to avoid too many wrinkles.

The travel pants that we tested for this article ranged in price from $22 to $228, but the most affordable pair that scored highly enough to be featured cost $70. This is a good illustration of the old adage, “you get what you pay for,” and if you want a pair of pants that tick all the boxes for comfort, versatility, and durability, then you should expect to pay somewhere around the $100 mark. Although this may seem expensive, consider that you’ll be able to wear the right pair of travel pants over and over again on your trip and hopefully for many years to come.

Above all, travel pants should be comfortable. You want full freedom of movement so you can run for that bus, take on that hiking trail, or dance the night away at that sidewalk taverna. You also want to be able to sit comfortably for several hours while traveling without experiencing any uncomfortable pinching or compression. This either means choosing pants with a relaxed fit, or, if you prefer form-fitting leggings, opting for ones with super soft material, plenty of stretch, and a waistband that stays firmly in place without being too tight.

Style is very personal and there’s no right or wrong when it comes to travel pants (or any other clothing). Whatever style you go for, though, we recommend choosing one with plenty of versatility. That means pants that you can dress up with heels and a blazer for a night out or formal business meeting, for example, or pair with sneakers and a T-shirt for more casual adventures during the day. This way, you’ll cut down on the number of different pants you need to take and save extra space in your suitcase for other items.

Although pockets aren’t necessarily essential if you’re the kind of person who always travels with a purse or backpack, they can be a very handy addition to your travel pants. After all, how much easier is it to whip your passport out of your pocket at security than having to rummage through your purse for the 99th time? Look for pockets that are deep enough to hold your valuables securely, even when you’re sitting down. The smartest travel pants may even have a zippered pocket or a hidden pocket in the waistband to dissuade pickpockets.

Whether for women or for men , the best pair of travel pants is the one you feel most comfortable in. Generally speaking, opt for soft, stretchy fabrics or pants with a relaxed fit that won’t feel too restrictive after hours in one position on the airplane. Pockets are ideal for keeping essentials like your wallet, phone, or passport handy, while breathable, sweat-wicking materials are great if you’re headed somewhere warm. Finally, choosing pants that you can wear for different scenarios (from daytime sightseeing or hiking to dining out in the evening) will help you pack smarter and lighter.

When it comes to the kind of casual pants listed in this article (leggings, joggers, lightweight travel pants), the best way to pack for wrinkle-free results is to fold the pants in half vertically, then roll them up tightly starting from the waistband. Bonus: This is also a great space saver, giving you more room in your suitcase for other clothes or souvenirs you pick up along the way.

Some may argue that traveling by plane is an occasion to dress up, but for most of us at Traveler, comfort is the main priority when planning a transit day ensemble: You want something loose enough that you won't need to readjust (or worse, unbutton) a few hours into a flight or road trip, but put-together enough to feel that you've made a switch out of pajamas and into a true outfit. Luckily, there is no shortage of loungewear sets these days.

Read on for 35 of the best loungewear sets to add to your travel wardrobe , many of which are sitting in our editors' dresser drawers. From upscale sweatsuits to cozy cashmere knits, they'll keep you comfy whether you're sitting on a plane, train, or in the passenger seat, and will get a re-wear on lazy vacation days when the only item on your to-do list is lounging around the Airbnb .

Is there anything easier than throwing on a jumpsuit? Spanx AirEssentials jumpsuit is one of the brand's bestsellers—and it's just been restocked in more colors. We love the drawstring tie at the waist that gives the jumpsuit a more fitted and flattering look.

Traveler 's commerce producer, Paris Wilson , swears by Roots' loungewear. “I've been raving about Roots for years. It's hard to find a brand that doesn't skimp on quality,” she says. The Luxe Crew and Pintuck pant are made from a cotton and cashmere blend. While the material gives it a more chic look, the fit of the set is more relaxed and loose. This can easily be dressed up or down, and would look great with a sleek pair of white sneakers .

The loose fit of the Ramona sweatshirt compliments the brand's drawstring waist Jane shorts. The rouched terry fabric on the inside of each garment keeps you warm and cozy without overheating. As warmer days approach, the yellow dip-dye design is a must-have for your spring and summer wardrobe .

This set is made for cold weather. The thick fabric will keep you warm and toasty whether you’re hanging inside with friends or out sightseeing. The top has a dropped shoulder sleeve that looks more oversized while the pants feature a wide-leg with a drawstring waist.. The set comes in 10 solid colors that are easy to pair with a slip-on sneaker or Ugg boots .

The soft ribbed knit of the Muse hoodie and sweatpant offers a lot of dimension to the duo. The set is lightweight enough that it can be worn over workout clothes without any bulkiness. The high-waisted joggers pair well with the cropped hoodie and offer a more chic silhouette.

You’ll be comfortable from head to toe with this ultra-soft pullover and pant set. The pants have a classic ‘70s wide-leg silhouette accompanied by an elastic waistband, while the pullover has a polo-inspired collar and a slightly cropped hem. There's something to be said for a zip-up sweatshirt, even if they've largely been replaced by pullovers of late. For one, if your temperature flips from chilly to warm, you can regulate without bothering your seatmate while trying to take off your hoodie. We're a fan of the sweatpants, too: the deep pockets, cuffed ankles, and cashmere fabric are all plusses.

Awarded one of Oprah's Favorite Things in 2020, I was eager to put on Cozy Earth's ultra-soft joggers, and am happy to report they lived up to the hype. Made of a mix of premium viscose from bamboo, acrylic, and spandex, they're smooth and cool to the touch, and have a loose but not baggy fit. I've worn them a ton on WFH days, and would happily fly in them. Snag a matching pullover if you like the matching set look.

San Francisco–based Quince launched a maternity collection, which includes a nursing-friendly long sleeve and lounge joggers with an adjustable drawstring waistband. All of the collection's pieces are made with renewable materials like Tencel lyocell, a biodegradable fiber made from wood pulp; mulberry silk, a hypoallergenic and thermoregulating fabric; the company's SuperSoft fabric, a blend of recycled polyester and tencel; and sustainably- and humanely-sourced Mongolian cashmere.

Outdoor Voices’ All Day hoodie and sweatpants set really is made to wear from dusk to dawn. It aims to be the softest pair of sweats you will ever wear, and stacks up, with a CloudKnit fabric that feels as cozy as your most worn-in pair of pajamas. The sweatpants are high-rise and more fitted toward the bottom to give the most flattering look possible, too. The pieces can be bought individually and come in six different colors, from neutral charcoal to a rich Kalamata purple.

While former Traveler editor Jessica Puckett's favorite cashmere set has since sold out, Cuyana's Pima outfit is another great option for plane travel and lounging, particularly in warmer environments, as the material is soft, smooth, and breathable.

Former Traveler editor Corina Quinn turned us on to Vuori's DreamKnit Collection hoodie and jogger set. “The DreamKnit feels like a cloud—it's so soft and cozy, yet lightweight, so you don't get too hot or too cool in them,” she says. “On top of that, because there are a few different models of jogger pants and tops, my friends and I have all found a model that's flattering for us.” For a pair of sweats that make you feel like you’re wearing a real outfit without actually doing so, Vuori’s unbelievably soft, stretchy sets are an easy pick.

Friend + Folk is a size- and gender-inclusive brand that prioritizes a limited carbon footprint, and puts it into practice by way of free carbon neutral shipping, recyclable and plastic-free packaging, limited batch-production, and more. The Joon joggers are a favorite—the fit is roomy and comfortable yet still tailored, and the zippered pockets are ideal for stashing AirPods, lip balm, and other odds and ends without worrying they'll fall out as you dash through the airport. Pair them with the Perry pullover and you've got a new airport uniform.

Lululemon may be best known for its leggings and workout wear, but don't skip over the brand's loungewear. This set is made out of a smooth Softstreme material that is stretchy and feels smooth against your skin. It's a great loungewear set to wear if you run hot.

We love this Madewell number, made of a fleece-like Superbrushed terry fabric. Wide legs and a loose fit make it just the kind of thing we want to wear on long travel days, and the patch pockets are much appreciated. Since it does have tank top-style straps, bring a cardigan or other added layer for the plane.

cotton on travel

Some loungewear is better suited for inside wear, like this cozy ribbed shorts set. Wear the pullover, with its bell sleeves and slit in the back, over leggings for long-haul flights. The stretchy shorts have a fairly short inseam, so they'll likely be more comfortable as a sleeping short or loungewear piece to change into when you arrive at your hotel or rental house.

Image may contain: Clothing, Suit, Overcoat, Apparel, Coat, Human, and Person

This two-piece set might be the closest thing to sleepwear on this list, and yet is still cute enough to feel confident while wearing through the airport. It comes in a dozen colors, from basic heather gray to bold indigo blue, and pairs slouchy, relaxed fit pants with a scoop-neck button-up henley.

Image may contain: Clothing, Sleeve, Apparel, Long Sleeve, Human, Person, Standing, and Pants

Sure, all sweatpants are designed to be comfortable, but the cotton, modal, and spandex fabric Knix uses takes things up a notch. The smooth, cooling, and slightly stretchy fabric feels fantastic against skin and looks a bit more put-together than typical sweatpant material.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Dress, Human, Person, and Pants

Most loungewear tends to follow the same cut, so we appreciate Monos, a luggage brand , shaking things up when delving into clothing. This set is as soft as any sweatpants out there, with a mid-length wide-leg pant and a short sleeve V-neck tee that's just slightly cropped.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, and Pants

Anything labeled Signaturesoft nails both the rest day and flying-comfortably mood we're going for. The top and bottom have a streamlined shape and the sweatpants are tapered at the ankle. Both pieces are made of a comfortable rayon, acrylic, and spandex mix, so you’ll feel cozy while still looking put together. The sweatshirt and sweatpants can be purchased individually and come in nearly a dozen colors should you want to mix and match, and the sweatshirt passes the video-conferencing-chic test, in that it looks more like a standard sweater than workout wear.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Pajamas, Human, and Person

Not a hoodie person? You might like this cowl-neck top, which comes with cropped pants, both made of a super soft jersey and spandex fabric. Shop the set in gray, sky blue, strawberry, or buttercream, and wear it on your next overnight flight to feel like you're in pajamas.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Footwear, Shoe, Human, Person, Suit, Coat, Overcoat, Sleeve, and Long Sleeve

You may never want to put on pajamas again after wearing Softwear's Lounge Set. The fabric is buttery soft inside and out. Both the pullover and joggers are tailored and fitted with a clean silhouette—the top could pass for a normal sweater—while still being ultra soft. Plus, it’s long-lasting: The sustainable fabric is pilling-resistant and made to keep its shape after every wear.

Made for pregnant or nursing moms, this Everly Grey set is designed to fit a baby bump and make nursing easier with side openings on the top. Made of stretchy fabric with cuffed ankles and wrists and pockets on the hips, it's a loose, ever-so-slightly tailored look you'll wear again and again. Order it in one of four neutral colors: black, charcoal, oyster pink, or denim blue.

Best Travel Sheets Comparison Chart

What’s the difference between a mummy and regular sleeping bag liner.

The only difference between a mummy and a regular sleeping bag liner is the shape . The shapes are based on different types of sleeping bags, since a sleeping bag liner is originally meant to be used inside it.

If you plan to use your sleeping bag liner as travel sheets, then the shape doesn’t make a whole lot of difference.

Who Should Travel with a Travel Sleep Sheet?

Travel sleep sheets are good for any type of traveler. But if you’re traveling on a budget or are headed out on a long-term trek — backpack-only — then a sleeping bag liner is a good idea. They’re also for you if you just need a little extra warmth!

Perhaps a travel sleep sheet is most important for those of us who are germaphobes or are sleeping at more highly trafficked but likely lower maintained venues, such as hostels.

Who Should NOT Use Sleeping Bag Liners?

We would not suggest sleeping sacks for adults who are claustrophobic, as you might feel uncomfortable when you have your travel sleep sack fully sealed.

Likewise, if you’re tall, you might not be comfortable in a sleeping bag liner ó check out our taller suggestions like the Yala Dreamsacks Silk Travel Liner that is 7 feet 9 inches long.

You are also less likely to need travel sheets if you’re staying at a hotel or resort, unless you’re a germaphobe or simply looking for more protection.

Should You Make Your Own Travel Sheets?

While there are options to DIY and make your own travel sheet, I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re using silk fabric . Cotton is heavy and bulky, which you don’t want in a sleeping bag liner if you’re trying to pack light.

I traveled with a cotton travel sheet on my RTW trip , and it was three times the size of other travelers sheets, which were silk or microfiber! I bought my sheet at the time because it was the cheapest, but for a little more cash, I could have packed lighter and saved space (which is especially important on a long-term trip).

What’s the Best Fabric to Choose?

When it comes to picking out the best sleeping bag liner for you, we highly recommend avoiding cotton whenever possible because of its bulk and weight.

Microfibre blends are the most cost-effective, easy to wash, and lightweight to carry. I travel with one similar to this travel sheet and highly recommend it.

If you’re able to dish out a few extra dollars, then silk sleeping bag liners are the best sleeping bag liner choice. They are incredibly lightweight and tiny, making them easy to pack. Plus they’re breathable and adapt to the weather to keep you from being too hot or cold.

What’s my Recommended Sleeping Bag Liner?

We believe that all of the sleeping bag liners we’ve provided in the above list are exceptional choices for different travelers. But if you’re curious, my lightweight microfiber blend sleep sheet was purchased in the Lake District in England. It is most similar to this travel sheet .

I like to be able to put my feet out of the sheet. Do any of these allow for 2 way zipping?

Alex

Hi Judy, thank you for your question! We’ll share your question here so the author of the article can reply!

Jenny

Whats microfiber feel like? Texture sensitive

alex

It’s very soft, in my opinion. Not like a fleece but not like a silk.

Lynette

The problem with silk is it doesn’t stretch, so the bag tends to rip along the seams after a while. It would help if it was a stretch silk like they use for clothing but I haven’t seen one.

Travel Fashion Girl

Stretch Silk would be a great option. Alternatively try the Microfiber Blends mentioned in the article 🙂

Pants are probably the top choice for what to wear when traveling, over shorts and skirts. However, not all pants are created equal.

Pants can come with a variety of problems: waistbands digging into your skin, fabric wrinkling, or not being able to wear them with any other outfits. You may find yourself wishing you could just wear sweatpants and call it a day. However, sweatpants don’t exactly have a reputation of being stylish, so,  if you want to travel and still have a little style, we’ve got you covered.

There are four key elements that go into the best travel pants: comfort, fabric, style, and versatility. These options for men and women tick all the boxes, so you know you’re making a good investment. Below you’ll find categories for athleisure, activewear, and business casual, as well as many styles including plus-size options.

FAQ About Travel Pants

What are the best travel pants for long flights.

As most things, it depends on your circumstances. If you are just traveling for leisure, a basic legging will do the trick for women, and you can’t go wrong with the Women’s UA Motion Ankle Leggings . They are a typical legging, with a pocket to keep anything you want handy while traveling, they allow for movement, and are super breathable, making them perfect for any trip you take. For men, the Public Rec All Day Everyday pants are our pick. More stylish than sweatpants, but just as comfortable, you’ll be a happy traveler when you wear these! As far as something dressier goes, for guys we pick the Prana Brion Pant II . They are super comfortable with 5 convenient pockets, and can easily be dressed up when you need them to be. For Women, our top choice is the Cotidie Harriet Trousers they are insanely comfortable, yet super stylish.

What are the most comfortable travel pants?

This depends on your personal preference, but typically, the simpler, and the more stretch, the more comfortable they are going to be. Alo’s ⅞ High-Waist Airlift leggings are a basic legging, but are soft, stretchy, and are probably the closest you will come to wearing pajamas while you travel. Again, for men the Public Rec All Day Everyday are going to give you the most comfort while on the road.

Should I wear shorts or pants on a plane?

It’s really a personal choice—but just keep in mind that it can get chilly on airplanes. You also may want to consider  your bare legs hitting up against the seat at the airport and on the plane, if you aren’t going to be able to shower shortly after you land, you may want to consider pants so you don’t have to worry about germs.

What material is best for travel?

Again, this can boil down to personal preference, however, a lightweight, breathable, stretchy material is going to be best. Typically stretchier material won’t wrinkle, which is an added bonus on top of comfort.

There are a lot of gripes to be had with flying, but perhaps the biggest one of all is the blasting AC on the plane. It is easily the least enjoyable part about air travel. Cool air during the cold season? No thank you. However, what you can do to make the experience at least a bit more enjoyable is packing a travel wrap.

Ahead, the best travel wraps for all your jet-setting adventures.

Enveloping your body in J.Crew's cashmere wrap is equivalent to warm and cuddly hug. It's bigger than most options, too, which makes it particularly great for 7+ hour flights and frigid days.

Material: 100% Cashmere

Dimensions: 79"L x 33"W

This cotton travel wrap is ridiculously breathable, irresistibly soft, and can be worn in a number of stylish ways. It's also easy to wash, which is always a big plus.

Material: 100% Organic Cotton

Dimensions: 78" x 28"

White + Warren's cult-favorite travel wrap tops our list because it's made of an ultra-soft (but never itchy!) cashmere that is also delightfully lightweight.

T&C 's executive travel editor Klara Glowczewska, who has been flying with hers for more than a decade , says: "I sleep under it on airplanes. Its softness and warmth transform even an economy class flight into a nearly pleasurable experience. I also swaddle myself in it on overly-air-conditioned buses, trains, cars (traveling or at home). I wrap it around myself in too-cold restaurants and movie theaters (or did, back when we frequented those)."

Material: 100% Cashmere in 7 gauge knit; 2-ply

Dimensions: 81"L x 36"W

If you're looking for a more affordable cashmere pick, Quince's travel wrap is extremely soft and perfectly airy for the warmer months.

Materials: 60% Cashmere, 40% Silk

Dimensions: 28"W x 78"L

Perfectly oversized and sumptuously soft, this is a travel wrap you'll never want to leave the house without. Plus, it comes in a rainbow of colors that you'll want one of each.

Dimensions: 36"W x 74"L

Mersea takes your traditional travel wrap and upgrades it with a curved neckline that perfectly drapes around your body and hand-finished fringe edges for a stylishly boho touch. It's also available in a slew of stunning colors, all of which that come packaged in a matching bag for easy storage.

Material: 100% Acrylic

Dimensions: 51"W x 62"L

Whether you wear it on a flight, layer it over an outfit on cooler evenings, or wrap it around your body during the winter, this toasty travel shawl is guaranteed to be in heavy rotation for seasons to come.

Material: 100% Pure Cashmere in 7-gauge knit

Dimensions: 84"L x 36"W

Why decide on one travel wrap when you can get a two-in-one deal? With this reversible option, you get the best of both worlds.

Material: 100% Wool

This soft-to-the-touch wrap will serve you well long after your flight. Layer it over an outfit or wear it as a cape for your dinner plans—you'll look effortlessly chic either way.

Looking for an option with sleeves? This Athleta option has more than 12,000 reviews with an almost 5-star rating. Shoppers love it for its super-soft material, the fact that it has pockets, and the thumbhole hold sleeves for extra warmth. As one writes: "Very cozy. Easy to slip on. Great for long plane rides!"

The beauty of travel pants is that they can go just about anywhere. Often made from stretchy material but designed to look like classic pants, you can wear them from the plane to the taxi to dinner and beyond. Over a period of six months, we tested 32 pairs of men’s travel pants for fit comfort, quality, durability, design, and value, and found the 17 you should consider when looking for that perfect fit.

We wore each pair of pants during daily commutes and international travel, taking them everywhere from the plane, train, and bus to the office, dinner, and beyond. They were spun through washers, flipped through dryers, and stuck in line at the grocery store. We selected options for every occasion and budget.

In the end, our top picks are comfortable, durable, and work in just about any environment. They also fit a wide variety of body types.

Best Overall

Lululemon abc classic-fit pant warpstreme.

  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5

These are extremely comfortable and breathable, and are versatile enough to wear on a variety of occasions.

These are classic fit pants, so if you’re looking for something with a slimmer profile, you may prefer something else.

The Lululemon ABC Classic-fit Pant Warpstreme checks all the boxes for the optimal men’s travel pants. We gave it a five out of five in every single category, so these pants really could not have done much better. Whether you’re looking for comfort, quality, durability, design, or value, these pants fit the bill. Their comfortable build means you can stretch your legs when sprinting to catch the bus, and they’ll get you through long, 16-hour travel days with ease. After weekly wear for commuting over a five-month period, they still look good as new with no signs of shrinkage or fading.

The pants come in a classic style with five pockets deep enough to fit the biggest phones and thickest wallets. They can be worn in almost any setting, including for workouts, work, travel, nights at home, brunch, and dinner dates. On top of that, they don’t stretch or shrink after multiple runs through the wash and the material doesn’t pill.

All in all, the Lululemon ABC Classic-fit Pant Warpstremes are the travel pants to beat. While the price is a bit higher than others on the list, we wouldn’t be surprised if you headed back to the store and picked up a few more pairs in different colors. Luckily, there are 16 options to choose from.

Best Everyday

Everlane the performance traveler chino.

These pants are stylish and offer a bit of stretch for a more comfortable fit.

The jogger bottom may wrinkle and start to look a little less neat after a few wears.

The Everlane The Performance Traveler Chinos might seem a bit tight at first, but after giving them a couple wears and washes throughout five months of tests, we found them to have a perfect fit. They’re known for being super comfortable, even while walking through terminals or spending hours waiting for a flight.

Everlane uses high-quality material for their pants, so the stretch waistband and jogger cut around the ankles won’t fall apart after a couple washes. We don’t recommend throwing them in the dryer, but if they somehow end up there, just give the pants a wear and they should stretch out after a couple minutes.

When it comes to design, the jogger cut gives them a different feel than some of the other pants on this list. The pockets are also deep, while the side zipper pocket allows for additional security. Even with the zip pockets, these are pants you could wear at the office or out with a white T-shirt in summer.

Best for Work

Mack weldon radius flex jogger.

Mack Weldon

  • Comfort 4.5 /5

They're sophisticated and can be subbed in for formal occasions.

These pants are not adjustable and the button in front has a slide-to-lock system.

The Mack Weldon Radius Pant manages to be comfortable and breathable, while also bringing a touch of sophistication to your wardrobe. The material is not as thin as other travel pants, which helps the fit stay true through multiple wears. While we didn't find them to be as comfortable as other pairs on this list, we didn't struggle when wearing them throughout an entire day.

The pants come in a classic four-pocket style — two in front, two in back. We noted the high-quality feel of the pants and think they’d be a good fit for formal events. They can be dressed up easily and look like a nicer pair of chinos, and they come with tiny extra compartments for smaller items like coins or Airpods. Additionally, the fabric wicks moisture and is lightweight without being too thin. Better yet, the fabric is not impacted by washing or drying and there’s no pilling, either.

Best Durable

Alo day and night pant.

These pants balance breathability with durability and offer a perfect fit.

Not everyone loves a jogger style, and they run a bit long.

Unlike some of the other travel pants out there, the Alo Day and Night Pant is not adjustable nor is the waist elastic, which gives it a bit of a dressier look. Still, these pants’ durability impressed us overall. They are stretchy and made from high-quality fabric that’s light and breathable for ultimate comfort. Over our five-month test, we loved their versatility and quality design.

Their dressier look means you can wear them to meetings or on long travel days and they’ll remain wrinkle-free. They’re breathability makes them perfect for a warm summer day, while their durability means you can even throw the pants in the drier if need be. They come in a classic, four-pocket style and your phone can fit in the back pockets without falling out. While these pants are on the pricey end, we feel it’s warranted for a pair of this quality.

The Details: 28 to 38, regular and long

Best for Tall Guys

L.l.bean men's venture stretch five-pocket pants.

The pants fit perfectly and provide total range of motion without looking frumpy or baggy.

These offer a more casual look so they may not work for formal occasions.

When you’re tall, it can be a challenge to find a comfortable pair of pants. L.L.Bean, however, seems to have solved the problem with their Men's Venture Stretch Five-pocket Pants. These pants are breathable and light, and aren’t super stretchy. They have a trim fit and look more like slightly relaxed slacks than joggers.

Offering a wide range of motion, we felt these seemed more athletic compared to dress pants, but we noted that they aren't casual-looking like men's sweatpants or shorts. The pants are a step above casual, making them versatile enough to work in a variety of settings. The material is comfortable and pockets are deep enough to fit your phone, wallet, and keys and still looks new after five months of wearing.

While we wouldn’t consider the pants to be luxury, they certainly are not “fast fashion,” either, so you can feel good about buying them in multiple colors.

The Details: 30- to 44-inch waist, 29- to 34-inch inseam | 96 percent nylon, 4 percent spandex

Best Splurge

Livsn ecotrek trail pants.

These pants are high quality and well worth the splurge.

These pants tend to run small, so consider sizing up.

We all deserve to indulge ourselves every once in a while, and if you’re considering splurging on a pair of travel pants, look no further than Livsn’s Ecotrek Trail Pants. The material sits in that perfect space between thick and thin and feels very high quality, making them perfect for all seasons. These splurge-worthy pants will last a long time, and won’t wear easily over time or in the wash.

There’s a bit of stretch to the fabric so we were comfortable wearing them for light workouts as well as commuting to work and dining out after. In total, the pants have six pockets: two in the front and two sets of two in the back. The back pockets all have zipper closures so your belongings remain secure.

The Details: 29- to 40-inch waist, 30-, 32-, and 34-inch inseam | 70 percent recycled nylon, 25 percent nylon, 5 percent spandex

Most Comfortable

Lululemon city sweat jogger.

  • Design 4.5 /5

These are the softest pants we have ever worn.

They are expensive for joggers.

Lululemon managed to make it on our list of the best men’s travel pants twice, and if you get the opportunity to try these on, you’ll know exactly why. Frankly, these are some of the most comfortable pants we’ve ever worn. They have a drawstring for a perfect fit, the tapered leg is slimming, and they find the perfect balance between a relaxed and put-together look. After five months of use on planes, trains, and during daily commutes, we found these to be incredibly comfortable.

These are high-quality pants as well (typical for Lululemon as a brand), and have an almost satin-like texture. Even after several washes, the pants retained their form and fit perfectly. They have four pockets, including two zippered back pockets.

The Details: 26 to 50 | 52 percent polyester, 42 percent cotton, 6 percent Lycra® elastane

Best Joggers

Vuori sunday performance jogger.

The fit is perfect and they’re comfortable enough to wear all day long.

They're too casual for formal occasions.

The Vuori Sunday Performance Joggers have an adjustable waist made of stretchy elastic, a snug overall fit, and breathable fabric — basically, they’re the kind of pants you’ll never want to take off. Luckily, they’re stylish and comfortable enough to be versatile for most occasions.

The drawstring adds adjustability, while the tapered legs with fitted cuffs give wearers a slimming look. We loved that the pants felt lightweight without being too thin, and they retained their shape and feel even after many wears and washes. There are two front pockets and two zippered back pockets, along with an additional zippered pocket on the upper thigh. You can wear the pants while hiking, traveling, or running errands, though we might not take them to the office or out to dinner. After five months of use, they still look good as new and the versatility and comfort of these joggers will have you coming back for a second purchase.

The Details: XS to XXL | 88 percent polyester, 12 percent elastane

Vuori Ponto Performance Jogger

They’re soft, stretchy, and incredibly comfortable.

They run small so you’ll want to size up for a baggier fit.

A soft pair of joggers will quickly make their way into your everyday wardrobe, and there’s no softer travel pant than the Vuori Ponto Performance joggers. The extremely stretchy material is soft and comfortable, lending itself well to lounging around the hotel room or taking a long flight.

Made of high-quality material, these pants are incredibly breathable and are some of the comfiest pants we've ever worn. Despite running on the tight side, we didn't find them restricting and they maintained their comfort and softness throughout a long day of wearing. The pants also have a variety of well-thought-out details, like the inverted zipper on the pockets with a spring loaded pull and metal aglets on the drawstring. The pants have two zippered side pockets that will fit a phone or wallet comfortably, making them a great choice for the gym as well.

The Details: XS to XXL | 89 percent recycled polyester, 11 percent elastane

Best Casual

Vuori transit jogger.

They are comfortable and can be worn in a variety of different settings.

The pants run a bit short and snug.

Finding casual pants that can be worn around town, on the road, and even on the soccer field makes life a touch more comfortable. The Vuori Transit Jogger is just that pant. They are neither too tight, nor too baggy, and the drawstring combined with the elastic waist makes it possible to wear them while playing sports. They breathe well and can be worn whether the temperature is hot or cold, and they allow for a full range of motion. There are two spacious front pockets that have enough space for a wallet or cell phone as well as two back pockets.

Made from good quality material, we loved that these pants are comfortable for days spent at the computer as well as long trips on the bus or in the car. Throw them in the washer and dryer without needing to worry about wearing them out.

The Details: XS to XXL

Best Stylish

Vuori meta jogger.

After five months of use while traveling, they still look new and never wrinkled — even when stuffed into packing cubes.

We wish they were softer on the inside.

With a tapered silhouette and flattering fit, the Vuori Meta Jogger is an extremely stylish pair of travel pants. These pants have a particularly clean look to them, even with the drawstring waistband, which is impressive. We found them to be comfortable without looking unkempt, breathable, and light. Somehow, they managed to give off a stylish, dressy appearance without truly being dressy. A lot of this comes down to the cut, which is a bit more formal than your typical joggers.

The pockets are big and the rear pockets have zippers, which is great for travel. They’re made from high-quality fabric that is slick and light, and feel like a more fashionable choice than a typical pair of lounge pants. They don’t stretch or change in the wash, which speaks to their overall quality.

The Details: XS to XXL | 100 percent polyester

Icebreaker Merino Men's Shifter Jogger Lounge Pants

  • Design 4 /5

They’re super lightweight, yet they keep your legs warm, even on windy days.

They run on the slimmer side, so those looking for something baggier will want to search elsewhere.

A good pair of wool pants will automatically be some of the most comfortable in your closet — and the Icebreaker Merino Shifter Wool Jogger Lounge Pants are the wool pants you can wear almost anywhere. The slim fit adds a bit of style, while the adjustable waist and drawstring ensures they're the perfect fit. We loved that the lightweight merino wool was exceptionally soft and felt like it floating around our legs.

While the wool is on the thinner side, its high quality, so the pants hold up over time and after several trips through the washing machine. The material feels silky smooth and it's surprisingly durable. The two front pockets are deep and stitched all the way around, so they don’t flop about. Additionally, these pants are extremely versatile and can be worn in a variety of situations.

The Details: S to XXL | 88 percent wool, 9 percent nylon, 3 percent elastane

Best for Hiking

Coalatree trailhead pant.

  • Comfort 3.5 /5

The drawstrings on each pant cuff allow you to shorten them in warmer weather.

Sizing can be a bit tricky, so make sure to read the sizing guides before making your purchase.

If you can bring your travel pants into the great outdoors, that feature alone may be worth the purchase. And if we’re choosing any particular pair to take hiking, it’s going to be the Coalatree Trailhead Pant. They’re extremely versatile and even have drawstrings on the pant legs so you can shorten them if you’re getting warm during a long hike.

The pants are well structured, so we didn't have to worry about them stretching out after each wear or trip through the laundry. They’re comfortable, breathable, and the fabric is high-quality and soft on the inside. We also loved that the stretchiness is perfect for climbing over a log or squatting down to pick something up. The pants are durable and repel water making them as good for hikes as they are for yard work or trips around town.

The Details: XS to XXL

Other Men's Travel Pants We Liked

Several other pairs of men’s travel pants we tested didn’t quite make our list of the very best, but still deserve an honorable mention.

Outdoor Voices Men's Rectrek Pants : Extremely comfortable and made of high-quality material, these pants are great for sitting for extended periods of time. However, the rear and legs are tighter than suggested on the website.

DU/ER No Sweat Jogger : These stylish joggers are comfortable, stretchy, and made of quality material. However, when we stuck them in the washer, they shrank a bit.

Lolë Wander Pants: These pants are lightweight and super comfortable, making them a great pair for travel and casual errands. They’re well made and will maintain their shape through multiple wears. However, they got a bit sticky during sweaty workouts, so they’re not made for true athletic endeavors.

HOKA Clifton 8 Road-Running Shoes: Complete your 'fit with our favorite men's travel shoes . These are super supportive and feature plenty of cushioning to keep you comfortable on your feet whether you're training for a marathon or exploring a new city on foot.

Eddie Bauer Men's CirrusLite Down Jacket: This jacket is a great layer to keep you warm on a chilly evening and lightweight enough to not overheat you when temperatures rise. It also came out on top in our best men's packable jackets tests.

AO Long Sleeve Curve-Hem Tee: If you're looking for the best travel clothes for men, you can't go wrong with this classic and stylish long-sleeve tee. Just be sure to size-up for the perfect fit.

Our Testing Process

Over a period of five months, we tested 32 products for fit, comfort, quality, durability, design, and value. We examined the travel pants’ material and overall construction, taking note of how the fabric feels to the touch, whether it’s stretchy or not, and the quality and durability of the seams. To test comfort and flexibility, testers did three squats in the pants to see how they held up.

Over a two-week period, testers wore the pants for at least six hours per day and during everyday activities, including working at the office, going out to dinner, running errands, and even exercising. After the first week of wear, they washed the pants according to the manufacturer’s instructions and checked how the pants changed afterward.

Tips for Buying Men's Travel Pants

Find the right balance between comfort and style.

Choosing a stylish pair of men’s travel pants doesn’t mean you should sacrifice comfort. One of the best and most important traits of these types of pants is how enjoyable they are to wear. Luckily, there are plenty of top brands making high-quality, stylish pairs. If you plan on wearing your pants everywhere, make sure they look and feel good.

Consider versatility

Some travel pants, such as men's sweatpants or joggers, are great for getting around town, running errands, and even for the gym or a run. However, that same pair might not be appropriate for the office or dinner in town. Before choosing a pair of travel pants that’s right for you, consider the various occasions where you’ll want to wear them and make sure the ones you choose line up with those goals.

Pay attention to the materials

When it comes to clothing, materials play a huge role in comfort and function. Whether it’s due to personal taste when it comes to fabric, or how you expect the clothing to hold up over time, the materials used to create the garment impact both how often you’ll be willing to wear it and how long it’ll last.

If your travel pants are stretchy, you should roll them rather than fold them so they won't wrinkle and you’ll save space. First, lay your pants on a flat surface, such as a bed or kitchen table. Next, fold them in half from the waist. Then, take one pant leg and fold it in a 90 degree angle outwards at the knee. Grab your pants at the waistline and roll downwards by the waistband. Once done rolling, pull the left out pant leg over the top of the roll, so that the rest of the pants are encapsulated inside. Make sure to button any buttons before rolling up your pants, too.

We always suggest following the care instructions on the tag when washing any pair of pants (or any other garment, really), to avoid damage or shrinkage. When in doubt, either hand wash or run it in the machine on a cold, gentle cycle and hang to dry, which should be safe for most clothing.

Best travel towel: we’re in love with turkish towels for travel.

Putting those normal bath towels you use at home on your packing lists is a big no-no.

Being big, bulky, and slow to dry makes them terrible for travel. The last thing you want to do is have to pack up a wet towel into your luggage. On arrival, there’s bound to be a musty stench to deal with. Yuck.

To combat this problem, we’ve typically recommended the pack towel , but that option also has its downsides. Most are barely big enough to wrap around your body, some tend to pick up a musty scent after so many uses, and the feeling of the shammy-like material on your skin isn’t always smooth.

But, we thought this was the best option, the best travel towel, until…

We discovered Turkish bath towels.

Use code HPL20 at checkout.

Why the Best Travel Towel is a Turkish Towel

Are Turkish towels good for travel? You better believe it! While there are still times when that tiny microfiber pack towel serves a purpose, the HPL team generally ALWAYS recommends a Turkish towel when traveling.

But if you’ve never heard of them before, you’re probably wondering what the heck they even are!

Knotty Turkish travel towels side by side

What are Turkish Towels?

Fellow traveler Camille already told us that Turkish towels are her one little thing she can’t travel without , and I have to be honest, I became an instant convert after Knotty (an Australian brand) sent me a few to try out for myself back in 2015.

Known as peshtemals, Turkish towels were originally designed for use in public bath houses . In recent years, they’ve grown in popularity as beach/pool towels, travel towels, and even as gym towels (I take mine to the gym!) thanks to their large size, high absorbency level, and quick-drying nature.

But most of all, we love their ability to be packed down quite small – almost just as small as those teeny tiny pack towels you get at the travel gear shops!

Benefits for Travel

So let’s take a look at why Turkish bath towels are perfect for travel:

Knotty Turkish towel comparison to a pack towel.

They’re thin . Even though they are cotton (which is not typically on our quick-dry clothing and travel gear list), they dry fairly quickly.

They actually cover you up . The size is not even comparable to pack towels, but since the material is thin, they still pack up small.

They’re soft on your skin . Unlike the sticky feeling of other pack towels, like my old faithful from Kathmandu , Turkish towels pat down more like a normal towel given the fluffy thread of Turkish cotton.

Absorbency is high . All thanks to Turkish cotton.

Brooke hanging a Knotty towel. They're really big!

The Turkish Towel vs the Travel Towel

I received my first Turkish towels from Knotty here in Australia. The extra large size of their Turkish towels (100cm x 180cm / 39in x 71in) puts my old, large microfiber towel from Kathmandu to shame (it comes in at a measly 50cm x 96cm / 20in x 38in).

Knotty's Turkish towel vs my Kathmandu pack towel.

However, the only place where the pack towel still has the Turkish travel towel beat is in weight .

My faithful pack towel weighs a mere 125g, or 150g (5.3 oz) with the zipper pouch, while my giant Knotty’s towel comes in at 272g (9.6 oz).

Sure it’s only 122g more, but for those who see the benefits of packing ultra-light , you will want to make sure you have chosen a towel that can double as a scarf, or even work as a blanket on a plane.

My Knotty’s towels make for bulky scarves, but there are thinner and slightly smaller Turkish towels on the market if you’re willing to put in the time looking.

Many Uses of Turkish Towels While Traveling

turkish towels from etsy

Now let’s have a look at all the different uses of a Turkish towel. (Note: You can imagine these being just as useful in your daily life!)

  • Bath Towel – And they can actually wrap around you for optimal post-shower cover-up.
  • Travel Beach Towel – Because they’re big and absorbent.
  • Sarong – A sarong also serves many of these travel purposes , but the typical sarong lacks the absorbency of Turkish cotton.
  • Blanket – For planes, trains and other situations where you might need a nap .
  • Picnic blanket – Impromptu lunch dates in a foreign park are better with a big spread.
  • Tie into a beach bag – No need to pack an extra bag. You can tie a couple of knots and the towel is now a bag.
  • Privacy screen in hostels – Hang it from the upper bunk, or create a changing area in a part of the room. Or, use a privacy screen when needing to use the toilet outdoors .
  • Scarf – Yep, you can wear it when you’re chilly.
  • Baby Blanket – I can’t tell you how to do it, but apparently you can swaddle that little one in a Turkish towel.

How to Wear a Turkish Towel

The benefit that Turkish towels have over other travel towels is their multiple functions beyond drying off. Like a sarong , you can wear a Turkish towel many ways, making it both a clothing item and a towel. Here are just a few of the ways you can wear a Turkish towel on the road and at home.

how to wear turkish towels

1. Scarf – Because of the size, it makes for a large scarf, so you may have to loop it around a few times. There are so many ways to tie a scarf, so do some research on Pinterest. I did the simple wrap around, but you could also do the knot or loop. Be warned that because of the rectangular shape, you may have some extra fabric that makes certain scarf styles look a bit silly.

2. Blanket scarf or shawl – Wrap around your shoulders to keep you from getting chilly on a night out or, if you’re more ambitious, treat it like a blanket scarf. I laid the towel on my shoulders like I was going to wear it as a shawl, but once the ends reached my armpits, I tied a knot behind my back. Use these styles to cover your shoulders when entering a conservative site like a church or temple.

3. Bag – You may have to play around with it before you get it right, as I did. Tie edges of the middle together length-wise (hot dog style) before tying the longer ends together (hamburger style). I don’t recommend wearing your scarf as a bag if you’re carrying important things like your camera and passport, as it might slip out or hands might grab it, but is fine for going to and from the beach.

4. Sarong/dress – While almost as versatile as a sarong, a Turkish towel is thicker than the materials used on sarongs. Therefore, it may not be as flexible for tying. But I did manage to turn my towel into a dress. I wrapped both ends around me and crossed over to tie around my neck. It’s a bit short, so I wouldn’t wear it out much beyond a quick lunch or beach day. But you can even belt it to make it more flattering or pair with leggings for additional modesty.

5. Skirt – To use as a cover up, simply tie in a big knot at your hip and leave the slit. But I chose to turn my Turkish towel into a skirt I could potentially wear out as an additional clothing item. I took one end to my waist and then wrapped the other end on top of it, tucking it into the top when I reached the end. I then folded over the top for extra security. This is also great to carry in your bag if you need to quickly cover your legs to visit a temple or other holy site.

6. Head covering – Another essential style is the head covering, which you may need when traveling to certain countries. You’ll be required to cover your hair when visiting temples and mosques so it’s nice to be able to throw the Turkish towel into your bag and keep from being denied entry or forced to wear the full body robes they often rent. I took the middle and placed it over my head and wrapped each end around my shoulders.

Where to Buy Turkish Towels

  • Etsy – Buy handmade Turkish towels from around the world on Etsy to support local shops. Here you’ll find even more options in terms of patterns, sizes and colors. There’s also more of a range in prices as well, starting under $10 USD and going up from there.
  • Amazon – Amazon sells just about everything you could possibly need, including Turkish towels. Prime members get free shipping on many of these towels and you can also purchase in bulk for more savings.

Aaah, this is AMAZING! The size comparison really drives it home when it’s hung up next to the PackTowel. The price is high, but they seem like investment pieces. Thanks for giving us a look at the Turkish towels, Brooke! Oh and p.s., summer is just beginning here in the U.S. (it’s 82 in St. Louis right now!) so seeing you in pants and scarf made me do a double-take!

Haha I know, I feel like I should retake photos wearing different clothes! 😉

I note that the Turkish travel towels are twice as large as your pack towel. That means that a Turkish towel the same size as your pack towel would be lighter. I estimate that the Junior size comes in at around 90g (more or less).

May 18, 2015 at 7:21 pm

Yeah I could easily do with a smaller Turkish towel, and one that is still able to wrap around my body would be the same or less in weight.

Hi there, how quickly do these dry? Do they dry as quickly as Pack Towls? Worried about using this for backpacking and it not being as quick to dry as the alternative, thanks!

May 24, 2015 at 5:58 pm

Hi there! I did a side-by-side test the other day and the Turkish towel actually dried a little faster than my pack towel! I soaked them both in the sink, wrung them out, and then hung them on a rack in the living room (to get that feel of them being indoors, in a hostel room to dry). I did this mid-day, and they were both dry by the evening, but the Turkish towel made it there faster.

These are quite pricey compared to the ones being sold by Calaca on Amazon. I got one similar to the knotty originals for around $15 US. It says it’s 100% cotton and came very nicely packaged with a real glass Turkish eye!

I can’t help but laugh at how relevant some of these posts are now that I’m BACK from my move to Costa Rica.

Honestly, this is the thing I was most glad I packed, and I nearly didn’t pack it! I bought it a few years ago because I thought it was beautiful, but it ended up being my most useful travel item.

I had my backpacker towel that was nice, but I honestly ended up preferring and using my turkish towel twice as much, simply because a) it dried me off quicker/more comfortably, b) was larger (I’m 5’11. This is always an issue for me and towels.), c) if left in the sun, it was dry in less than an hour, and d) it doubled as a blanket for me. In a lot of hostels, they only gave me a top sheet, and while it may be warm during the day, in many locations, it got pretty cool at night, so I was glad to have something to snuggle under that was breathable, but still warm.

I’m still glad I had both – especially my last 6 weeks which I just spent on the beach every day; it was nice to have my turkish towel for beach time and my pack towel for shower time. If I had just stayed in the mountains the whole time, however, I would be happy with just my pretty blue striped towel (just like the one in your photo!).

I found a couple of turkish towels at Costco online – 2 for about $45. Not so many color choices (all white with different color borders). I fell in love with them and have been using them as my every day towels at home. I like that they wrap around me and dry quickly. I always take my own towel when traveling anyway, usually a microfiber XXL travel towel that I got from Rick Steves, but I’ll be taking my turkish towel on my next trip this summer. I plan to pack it flat in a one gallon zip bag with the air squeezed out, I admit I was skeptical at first about how they would dry me off but I think they actually work better than my microfiber towel. They are definitely more absorbent than a sarong. I’m a fairly light packer and am willing to take the few extra ounces this towel may cost me.

You can buy these MUCH cheaper directly from Turkish vendors on ebay! I also bought a big one at the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul for about 10 $, it’s great.

I bought three of these Turkish towels on Amazon. Tried them out on my last holiday and they are definitely a thumbs up from me. I found them lightweight great for the beach and wrap around you better than towel. We even took one out with us when we went out one evening to put round our legs whilst sitting in an outdoor bar.

I love these towels!! I am leaving for Italy next week and already have one in my carry-on pack. I plan to use it for a blanket on the plane, a shawl/scarf when visiting places where I need to cover my shoulders, a picnic blanket in Tuscany, and an actual towel in Assisi when I relax by the pool! I got my in Los Angeles from The Folding Room, an on-line store. Love these things!! The only hard part is to choose a color!

This is awesome! I’m heading to London and Amsterdam next month and I’ve been there before but this will be my first time staying in a hostel and I just ordered one of these towels. They sound fabulous – Thanks!

I missed this post from your blog, but I was looking at the 99 gifts for women travellers and I saw the knotty which then brought me here. I went on to the knotty website and bought one. It will be perfect for camping and going on longer trips. Thanks for the 15% off code. ?

Love these!! I’m from Canada and would love to know if there’s a place in Canada I could get one. They are expensive on amazon for Canada shipping.

Hi Jeanine- If you search for Turkish Towels on Amazon.ca, I see some. Not sure of the shipping costs.

I purchased three for £20 off Amazon in May last year to take when we went to Austria for a three week road trip. We were staying in rented apartments, so most places provided linens, but our last place was a hostel with really tiny towels, so these came in handy! They also worked great to put on the floor in the bathroom under our hung up sink washed clothing so we didn’t drip water all over the floor. Love the Turkish towels!

Thanks for the tip! We just purchased a couple Bali towels after reading your post to travel with to the Dominican Republic this spring. <3
